Bid to save city cancer centre

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across the community are being asked to help prevent a valuable cancer centre from closure.

CancerWise is an independent cancer support charity based in Basin Road, Chichester.

Despite having supported people

suffering from cancer and their families for the last 24 years, it has run into financial difficulty and could shut by the end of the year.

Now, staff are pleading with the community to support the charity to enable it to continue running.

Centre manager Lisa Joy said: "We commenced the year with cash reserves lower than in previous years.

"We had expected that our many

summer fundraising events would enable CancerWise to build up our reserves and secure a solid base to take us into 2018.

"Sadly, despite all the hard work of everyone involved, this has not proved to be the case.

"Our reserves are now at a critical level and unless we can gain enough support to build our reserves we will be forced to close our doors within the next couple of

Last week, West Sussex County Council followed in Chichester District Council's footsteps and agreed that the best way forward to resolve the ongoing congestion on the A27 is to bid for funding from the next Road Investment Strategy programme, which will run between 2020 and 2025.

Supported by Gillian Keegan MP, the councils have come together with local communities to shape the future plans for the A27 in Chichester.

As a result they will call upon Highways England to find the right scheme for the area and pursue future investment in the road rather than take any of the current options proposed.

A series of community workshops, called ‘Build a Better A27’, have been held by West Sussex County Council with the district council to find a way forward on the road scheme following its cancellation earlier this year.

New appointments announced

by Bishop at city's cathedral THE Dean of Westminster and an Oxford Associate Professor have been appointed as Honorary Canons of Chichester Cathedral.

THe appointments were confirmed by the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner.

THe ancient Wiccamical Prebends, to which John Hall and Jennifer Strawbridge have been appointed, are designated as theological canonries and lectureships.

Dr Warner said: “THis enables us to invite people who are eminent in their field of teaching and theological reflection to enrich our life. By becoming part of the household of faith here in Sussex, we believe that

they will encourage us to grow in wisdom and faith.”

THe Dean of Westminster, THe Very Revd Dr John Hall, will take the Stall of the Prebendary of Bursalis and Mansfield College Associate Professor, THe Revd Dr Jennifer Strawbridge, will take the stall of the Prebendary of Bargham.

Dr Hall said: "I am grateful to the Bishop of Chichester and delighted at the prospect of a formal association with Chichester Cathedral and Diocese, alongside my role at Westminster Abbey."

Bosham ladies host 10th and final coffee morning

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A COFFEE morning which has been held annually for 10 years has raised over £40,000 for charity.

Two friends from Bosham held the 10th Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday to raise money for the cancer charity.

THe women have been hosting the events since they were both diagnosed with breast cancer just three weeks apart.

With £36,000 already raised in the previous nine years, the women decided to end the 10th year with hopes of hitting the £40,000 mark.

THe events were more than just coffee mornings with visitors describing them as comparable to summer fetes.

THe women, together with an army of 45 volunteers, set up gazebos housing everything from cakes, breads and pastries, clothes and shoes, homemade jewellery, bacon butties, a tombola, games, a silent auction, homemade sewn and stitched goods and produce donated by local farmers.

Co-organiser Jan Davenport, 67, made bread and baked goods for the sale which she started making in March.

She said: "Julia and I went through our journey together. We decided to do a coffee morning and then through word

of mouth it got bigger and bigger each year.

"I've been baking lots of goods to sell today and had to store them all in the freezer for the past few months.

"We have an amazing team of friends and family who all help. It runs like clockwork. We are so lucky."

Julia Baker, who hosts the events in her garden and field, said she and Jan used Macmillan services when they were diagnosed and they were extremely supportive.

"We feel like we've given 10 years now and raised so much money and we're all pensioners now.

"We have a committee of 14 and we also have 45 helpers which is why we have so much here."

Emma Heley, Macmillan fundraising manager for the South East, attended the event to present Jan and Julia with a certificate and flowers.

She said: "I wanted to be here at the event to thank them for their hard work.

On behalf of Macmillan I wanted to thank them for putting these events on to help people with cancer.

"Twenty eight people in Sussex have a cancer diagnosis every day and the money raised at these events is vital.

"THe money could be used for things such as nine months' funding for a Macmillan nurse or funding small grants

for people in Sussex."

Friend and local resident Ros Ticehurst said: "I've been coming for all 10 years now.

"THey have put a lot of effort in to these events and we all like to come down and support it.

"It's such a lovely venue and environment. THey are lucky to have all this space.

"It's a great charity to support and is close to everyone's heart. It is a shame it's the last year."

THree sisters, Sue Edden, Linda Banting and Rachel Gick, have been helpers at

the event for the past four years.

THe siblings team all make handmade home furnishings including doorstops, aprons and cushions, among many other items.

Sue said: "We have been sewing throughout the year. We are very lucky because we get the fabric donated to us so we can sell our items much cheaper.

"I can understand why Jan and Julia are giving up as they put so much work in to it, but it is a shame as it's a great event."

THe final figure raised on the day was £6,888 which brings the total to an outstanding £42,888.

NEW railings are being installed in Priory Park.

THe railings will replace an old wooden fence which had deteriorated and was in a bad condition.

THe idea for railings was raised several years ago by the Friends of Priory Park, a voluntary group set up to promote, conserve and protect the park.

THe work is being funded by money from developer contributions known as Section 106. Historic England has also been involved in the planning stages of the project.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for contract services at Chichester District Council, said: “THis project has been in the pipeline for a while and once finished, will really enhance the park.

"As well as improving park security, the railings will also be aesthetically pleasing and fit in with the surroundings.

“Although some hard pruning has been carried out to allow the work to take place, the gaps in the vegetation will disappear over the coming seasons, aided by some extra plants.

“We estimate that work will take a couple of weeks but members of the public will still have access to the park. Where installation work is taking place, our contractors will fence off a section of path at a time and put signs up to inform people."

School place applications PARENTS can now apply for a school place for children due to start primary or infant school or transfer to a junior school next September.

Applications are open and they close on Monday, January 15.

If your child was born between September 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014, they will be eligible to start school next September.

Fears charity may be forced to close

Centre manager Lisa Joy said: "A cancer diagnosis can have a huge impact on patients, families, and caregivers.

"Feelings of depression, anxiety, and fear are very common and are normal responses to this life-changing experience. Family members and caregivers often have these feelings, too.

"THey may be afraid of losing their loved one and feel angry because someone they love has cancer. CancerWise supports them throughout this traumatic time.

"We welcome over 250 people through our doors each month, with numbers growing and increasing referrals coming from Macmillan and other health services. Without CancerWise there is nowhere locally to access the help so desperately needed by many.

"THe services we provide are clientcentred and tailored to individual client needs, supporting them long after treatment has stopped."

THe charity has launched an appeal.

Comic Con proves a success as hundreds turn up to event COMIC fans were in their element at the weekend as the first ever Comic Con was held in Chichester.

Held at Chichester College, it brought together professional comic book guests, local artists, writers, comic publishers, cosplayers, gamers and retailers, with a common interest in comics and pop culture.

Organiser Simon Birks said: "2017 was the inaugural year, and the turnout was fantastic. Over 600 people came to experience it and everyone I spoke to said they'd had a fantastic time."

THere was also a cosplay competition, where judges awarded prizes to the most inspiring costumes.

Hospital staff recognised at an annual awards ceremony

More than 150 people enjoyed the Western Sussex Hospitals’ eighth annual Patient First STAR Awards, held at Fontwell Park Racecourse.

THe staff recognition awards saluted the compassion, innovation and dedication of staff and volunteers from across the trust, which covers most of West Sussex.

THe prize dinner and ceremony launched with a special guest video appearance from astronaut Major Tim Peake – who remains St Richard’s Hospital’s most famous baby.

Speaking from the European Space Agency, Major Tim greeted all the trust’s staff.

He said: “THank you very much for all you do for your patients and going the extra mile.

"And huge congratulations to the 440 members of staff and volunteers who’ve been nominated for the STAR awards ceremony this year.”

THe Volunteer of the Year prize went to the Flower Team at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.

THey decorate the corridors with fresh blooms delivered by local funeral directors at the request of bereaved

families.

Sister Hannah Chadwick, who works at the Selsey ward at St Richard's Hospital, was presented with the Mentor of the Year award.

She said: “It has filled me with pride to be awarded a Patient First STAR Award. I love my job and I am surrounded by an excellent team who inspire me on a daily basis.

"To be recognised in this way has been absolutely brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Annie Blackwell, lead for safeguarding at St Richard's Hospital, won the Patient's Champion award.

She said: “I was most honoured to be firstly nominated and then to actually receive the award of Patient’s Champion.

“It was fantastic to have the work both I and my team do recognised and highlighted. It was also very humbling to hear the other winners' nominations and to hear of all of the

great work our colleagues do to ensure patients’ needs are at the forefront of all we do.”

Chief executive Marianne Griffiths said: “Our Patient First STAR Awards are a truly special way to recognise

and honour the wonderful work and extraordinary efforts our staff and volunteers undertake every day.

"Congratulations to our winners and everyone who was nominated. You are all stars.”

Success for city festival THE fourth Chichester Speakers Festival played host to 14 writers discussing an eclectic choice of subjects.

THe two-day event at Chichester’s North Street Assembly Rooms included talks about politics, political memoirs, Spitfires, North Korea, the Stockholm Syndrome and comedy.

BBC correspondent Kate Adie, interviewed by Johnston Press journalist Blaise Tapp on her choice of Desert Island Books including George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty Four, told the audience of her link with the author.

Others fielding questions after an introduction to their books included Malcolm Rifkind (Praise and Pragmatism: THe Memoirs of Malcolm Rifkind) and Alan Johnson (THe Long and Winding Road).

Lord Digby Jones inspired the audience with his take on business.

He was promoting his book, Fixing Business: Making Profitable Business Work for the Good of All. Marc Rattray, originator of Speakers Festivals, said: ‘I was delighted to see the festival going from strength to strength and to have such erudite intelligent audiences from Chichester.

"It was also wonderful to have a very good line-up of speakers. I see the festival evolving and growing in the next few years and am very pleased to see such an enthusiastic uptake from the people of Chichester."

Parents across the county have received a letter updating them about the crisis affecting schools, including Bishop Luffa School in Chichester, signed by headteacher Nick Taunt.

In the letter, it said: "It should be acknowledged that introducing a new national formula was complex and challenging.

"Schools that have previously been at or below the “ breadline” do receive some improvements to their funding position, but the universal view of headteachers across the 17 counties is that this is not enough to make a real difference.

"Over a five-year period, there is a shortfall of approximately £1.7 billion.

THe Institute of Fiscal Studies states that during 2015-2020, school budgets will have been cut in real terms by 4.6 per cent.

"THis means that there is simply not enough money in the system.

Council urges residents to get involved in Mental Health Day LOCAL libraries, charities, health organisations and businesses are all getting involved in this year’s World Mental Health Day. THis year’s theme - Mental Health in the Workplace - will be spread throughout services at West Sussex County Council to mark the event on Tuesday.

Help prevent road flooding PEOPLE are being asked to help rake leaves away to prevent road drains getting blocked and increasing the likelihood of flooding.

West Sussex County Council looks after 137,000 highways drains and gulleys across the county.

Five top tips have been issued: • Stand on the verge or pavement and rake leaves downhill towards you until they are well out of the way.

• Where possible, do it in daylight when visibility is good, on roads of less than 40mph.

• If you live on a busy street, park your car in front of the drain to create a safety barrier for you.

• Wear something bright so you are clearly visible and other road users know you are there.

• Avoid raking leaves uphill, or into the road, as they will only be blown or washed back into the drain.

Warrell fights back to take on his first half marathon

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk WARRELL HARRIES' life changed when he suffered a heart attack last year.

But now, he is pounding the streets and getting ready to take on the Chichester Half Marathon this weekend.

THe 58-year-old is running the 13.1 mile event for the national young suicide prevention charity, Papyrus.

Last June, Warrell, who considered himself fairly fit and well, suffered a heart attack, which kickstarted a new healthy lifestyle and commitment to transform his life.

His symptoms started one Wednesday morning as he cycled to work.

He said: "I didn’t recognise the signs and brushed them off as asthma. A few days later, while out for lunch with friends, I begun to feel strange again.

"As I started to feel worse, I finally decided to go to St Richards in Chichester to get checked out.

"I was told I was having a heart attack and was sent straight to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham."

Warrell had surgery to clear a blocked artery, and had stents fitted. He was told he would be able to return to normal in around six weeks.

He added: "Despite being fairly active, I knew that my drinking and eating habits were probably to blame and that I did need to start taking better care of myself.

"I was determined to make a change.

In the autumn, my daughter - a keen runner - encouraged me to give running a try.

"I assumed my asthma would prevent me from running, but I bought some cheap trainers and gave it a go.

"Soon after, my daughter asked if I would do the local Chichester Parkrun.

I again assumed this would be far too much for me, as I had never ran more than 10 minutes in one go.

"But the determination and the encouragement of my daughter spurred me on."

Warrell found the first run a challenge but he didn't give up. He returned the next week and he hasn't looked back since. THis summer, a friend who’d also had a recent health scare, encouraged Warrell to sign up for the Chichester Half Marathon.

He decided to support Papyrus as the daughter of a colleague took her own life earlier this year.

"THe heart attack has changed my outlook on life," he said.

"I don't want to waste this fabulous opportunity now that I have been given a second chance.

"My newfound love of life especially resonates with the work of Papyrus who believe that with appropriate support and education, many young suicides can be prevented. I want to do my bit to ensure that more young people can be supported."

A piece of cake to raise funds

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HUNDREDS of pounds was raised and cakes consumed last Friday as coffee mornings across Chichester were held to help raise money for charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support asked people to come together and hold coffee mornings to raise awareness and funds.

Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital chef Stephanie Barnett and her auntie, Heidi Allotey, spent over 12 hours baking cakes for their sale.

THe pair hosted the event after running one last year at home. THe charity is close to their hearts after losing several family members from cancer in the past few years.

Stephanie said: "A nurse here has cancer and Macmillan are helping her a lot.

"We are only asking for a small donation as it's all for a good cause."

A raffle was also drawn with prizes donated by staff and a total of £345 was raised on the day.

Brick Kiln Garden Centre in Bognor Road, organised entertainment from John Sparrow on the keyboard and a percentage from tea and coffee sales were donated to the charity.

homemade and shop bought cakes donated by visitors and volunteers.

Alison Davis, volunteer at the gallery, organised the event.

She said: "THis is a charity so close to many people's hearts. My husband died so suddenly, sadly we didn't get a chance to use Macmillan."

THe total raised from the raffle and cake sales was £545.20.

Just across the road, at Marks and Spencer in East Street, the headline sponsors of the coffee morning events, staff members were taking it in turns to ride an exercise bike at the entrance.

Menswear department customer assistant Louise Formaggia said: "I've been pedalling on the bike for over an hour and a half this time.

"We've been taking it in turns since 10am to raise awareness and promote the charity."

Marriott House and Lodge in Tollhouse Close hosted a coffee morning and managed to raise over £40.

THe residents made some cakes with the help of the activities team and some staff also donated cakes.

THe Royal Oak at Lagness decided to hold their coffee event in the afternoon.

A range of homemade cakes and a raffle adorned the tables in the pub and the grand total raised was £345.

One avenue often taken is to get financial support from parents or other relatives, but did you stop to consider that this could come in a few different forms?

1. The bank of Mum and Dad Borrowing money from your parents or other family members is certainly not a new concept and may well be how you’re able to scrape the deposit together for the purchase of your first home.

But with savings accounts offering pitiful rates, might it be possible to borrow that little bit extra while even paying the kind relative some interest to lower your overall borrowing costs, while boosting their return on savings too?

2. The house of Mum and Dad If your relatives don’t have cash in the bank to lend you, might they be able to use some of the equity in their own home to access finance cheaper than you can?

Re-mortgaging their home to 60 per cent of its value can come with an interest rate of 0.99 per cent, which is significantly cheaper than the rates a first-time buyer can borrow at - 1.79 per cent is currently the cheapest rate for a two-year fixed mortgage with a 10 per cent deposit.

3. The guarantee of Mum and Dad THere are some mortgage products that don’t need the actual cash to act as your deposit, but instead undertake a guarantee over a parents home or savings account so that should you fail to pay, they will make up the difference.

THis is much the same way as a parent might act for a tenant as a guarantor, underwriting their financial obligations should they not pay their rent.

With Millennials spending three times more of their income on housing than their grandparents, it’s no wonder that current firsttime buyers are struggling to save to get on the housing ladder.

Businesses to get boost BUSINESSES and residents in Midhurst, Petworth and Selsey will be getting support from Chichester District Council.

THe council's new rural towns co-ordinator, Steve Hill, will be working to build on each town’s unique identity.

He said: "Our rural towns want to shout about what they have to offer and we want to make sure that local businesses have the confidence to do this.

“THis role is all about building relationships with local businesses to help them promote themselves more effectively.”

Part of Steve’s role is to make residents aware of the many shops and services they have on their doorstep. He will also be working with businesses to improve signage in town centres, monitoring vacancy rates and ensuring the shopping areas are attractive.

He added: “All of these towns have thriving high street communities and they are all unique.

“Selsey has the flavour of the sea and the fishing community, but it also has a bucket and spade atmosphere.

"Midhurst is quite a funky place.

It’s got a great cultural element and there are independent shopkeepers there who want to fight for business and do something positive for the town.

"Petworth has a diverse range of shops including a fantastic place where you can buy new vinyl records and a wonderful bookshop.”

Shock as village bank to close

Barclays in East Wittering will be closing in December.

THe branch in Shore Road is one of only two remaining banks left in the area.

Neighbouring businessman, Steve Burges, the owner of Color for more than 10 years, condemned the decision.

He said: “I bank at Barclays at the moment. It’s going to ruin all of us. THat’s our daily banking and they’re just taking it away.

"Where do I go to get my change now or pay in cheques? I might have to stop accepting cheques but the older people like writing them out still.

"People say to go to Chichester, but my shop operates six days a week, when the banks are open, so how can I do that?

"I have no choice but to use the Post Office now, as Barclays operates through them."

Owner of the Splits bakery, Lorraine Edney, 46, said: “THis closure is a massive inconvenience. It will limit us to where we can get change from. It will affect our customers.

"THis is a village where people choose to live for retirement. Firstly, NatWest has closed and now Barclays - these are two of the major players.

"THis is a very traditional village and for our customers, it’s really a major deal."

Senior counter assistant, Janet Tucker, 69, said: "Resources in the village are already being stretched, we’ve lost our local pub and the cash machines are always empty,

especially in the summer.

"THe locals are the people who support the village in the winter, giving us a nice trade every day. To take things away will be difficult. People are going to really struggle, it will be terrible for them."

Villagers Rod and Susie Adams have already switched banks.

Rod said: “It was obvious. We knew it was writing on the wall weeks ago. HSBC closed not long ago and now we’re just left with Lloyds. We’ve moved to Santander now."

Susie added: “It’s a shame Barclays are closing. It will have a huge effect on the

area because of the older generation. THey cannot just get on buses to Chichester and they aren’t into internet banking. " In a statement, a Barclays spokesman said: "We do not take the decision to close any branch lightly and we are committed to adhering to the UK Access to Banking Standard.

Pier's wartime past recalled FORMER Leading Wren Joyce Ablitt returned to Bognor Regis Pier to recall the sailors with whom she used to serve.

Joyce was guest of honour at the dedication service for a new memorial to the pier's Second World War role as HMS St Barbara.

She was in charge of the galley on the base for about a year between 1943 and 1944. She said: "I loved every minute of it.

I felt sad when they came to say goodbye because I knew they were not coming back. That was the terrible thing.

"That's the reason why I am here - to remember all those who didn't return. It's nice to keep their memories alive after all these years."

Joyce, 92, who lives in a Felpham care home, was It saw an inscribed granite plinth unveiled on the prom in front of the pier.

Commander Michael Dreelan, commanding officer of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, laid a poppy wreath at the plinth. He said: "HMS Excellent has got a long-standing connection with HMS St Barbara. HMS Excellent was the Royal Navy's home of naval gunnery and HMS St Barbara was an off-shoot of that.

"Today is very important to us. What defines us as a service is not only our values and standards but also our traditions.

"HMS St Barbara will always be important to us. The men who were here were that good they shot down a German Dornier bomber and that is amazing."

range and gunnery training school was commissioned on the pier from September 1, 1943, until January 23, 1945.

The new memorial stands on what would have been its quarterdeck. HMS St Barbara had four officers and 74 ratings and they downed that Dornier on February 10, 1943, on a day Chichester was bombed.

The new memorial is the third to be dedicated to the piece of naval history.

The first was installed on the front of the pier in 2010 by the then Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day Committee under the direction of the late Felpham resident Les Garrett, who served at D-Day. It was removed during works on the pier and a new memorial installed on the back of the pier last year. But this suffered weather damage last winter.

Town firm Reynolds sponsored the replacement as part of the firm's 150th anniversary. The service was conducted by the Rev Dr Alison Green, curate at Chichester Cathedral and chaplain to the Bognor Regis Sea Cadets.

About 150 people attended the 15 minute event. They watched as Cadet Charlotte Johnson, 12, accompanied Cmdr Dreelan to the memorial with the wreath.

She said: "This is about remembering everyone who served here. They trained and they fought for our country."

Cadet First Class Zachory Coppock, 13, and Ordinary Cadet Jack Golding, 14, unveiled the memorial and Cadet Jade Brooker, ten, and Senior Cadet Alfie Harris, 12, were also present.

He is an inspiration to other teens who may not have had the best start but prove with hard work and determination they can change their fate and have a good life, despite the hand they were dealt.”

Joe’s enthusiasm as he ran to the stage to receive his award was evidence of his enthusiasm!

Spoilt for choice at charity coffee events TRULY scrumptious cakes were found all over Bognor Regis as multiple groups and companies hosted their own Macmillan coffee mornings.

THe nationwide charity events held last week proved a hit with both organisers and customers enjoying the sweet treats on offer.

For members of the Hotham Park Heritage Trust it was a milestone occasion as their £300 intake gave them a total raised for Macmillan Cancer Support as £2,000 over six years.

At their event eight members of the trust donated a variety of home-made cakes including fresh cream meringues, red velvet cupcakes and a coffee and walnut cake.

Organiser Christine Hunter, the trust’s membership secretary, pictured inset with Sue Curnick, said: “Cancer touches most people’s lives and I think Macmillan offers amazing support to both the sufferer and their families.

“It feels good to be able to hold an event like this. It’s proving very sociable and that’s what a coffee morning should be all about – cake, coffee and a chat.”

THe community solutions manager at the Aldingbourne Trust charity shop in Aldwick Road, Lisa Palmer, thought the same. "It was very well attended. Lots of members of the community came by, as well as a bus-load of people we support from the centre and the manager of the cafe over there.

"THis was the first time we had done this and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. It's

a positive way to engage with the local community," she said.

Lisa's team raised more than £300 through cake sales as well as a raffle and tombola with prizes donated from businesses in Aldwick Road.

For many businesses it was their first time taking part in the coffee morning.

Charlotte Winter, from Sight & Sound in Bognor Regis High Street, explained why they had become involved.

She said: "THis is our first year. I've got a relative with the illness and most people know someone with it. We just wanted to do something for the community."

THe team raised £325.06 and, as a company, it has decided to match the figure which doubles their total.

It was a similar case for Oyster Estates in Flansham, who made £500 for the charity.

Personal assistant Tanya Kavanagh said: "It's such a great thing to do for such a wonderful cause. We had planned on doing it last year but somehow we ran out of time. THis year we made sure we were ready and we're so glad we were.

"It's just been lovely. We've had the chance to meet some of the people we work with over the phone for the first time face to face so it's been a great way of becoming more sociable as an office."

Some businesses were more experienced with the offering of cakes and coffee.

Bognor Regis Railway Social Club held its second Macmillan coffee morning.

Club secretary Trish Lewis hoped to make this year's even more successful.

She said: "THis year we wanted to make it

bigger and better so we've got extra things going on like the raffle with prizes donated by members, and an auction for watches.

"It has proved very popular. It's usually quiet on Friday mornings but today we've been so busy."

THe club raised £701.40, which included the cake sale, a raffle and an auction for two watches, in comparison to last year's £150.

Owner of Pebbles Hair Design in Aldwick Road, Gill Boxall, was pleased to be taking part again to raise £350. "THis is our fourth year doing the morning and we usually get such a good response. As a business it's nice to be able to give something back to the community," she said.

Mayor praises efforts of all IMPRESSED Bognor Regis town mayor Phil Woodall spoke of his pride in all the businesses that took part in what is known as the world's biggest coffee morning.

Cllr Woodall paid a visit to Nationwide in the High Street, along with his mum, Pam Moseley, to see what tempting treats were available at its event.

He said: "It's nice to see so many businesses in town getting involved. Usually, it's just the smaller businesses who take part in events like this but it's great that even companies like Nationwide are taking part."

The building society offered a range of cakes baked by employees and their relatives and the raised ÂŁ250 over the weekend.

Bognor Regis resident Sarah Jones was there to enjoy what was on offer. She said: "All the staff

here are ever so nice.

"They're brilliant, and always so helpful. I came in just to do some banking and I couldn't resist a cake."

The Nationwide branch in Bognor Regis is no stranger to charitable causes.

Earlier this year they held a cake sale in aid of the Stonepillow charity and manager Matt Stanleyhas run the Littlehampton 10k in aid of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Matt explained why Nationwide was a part of the morning.

He said: "To us, our community is so special and we like to give something back.

"We are so lucky that our members are so willing to be generous and get involved with events like this. Everyone's got some connection to Macmillan or the illness in some way."

` DIY waste decision DIY WASTE can continue to be left at household waste recycling sites around Bognor Regis and Chichester for free.

West Sussex County Council has confirmed it will carry on the suspension of charges started last April on a temporary basis.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, its cabinet member for environment, said: "We said to our residents that we would suspend charging until the government clarifies its position on the matter.

"It is not expected that government will be in a position to do this for some time.

"So, we have taken the step to confirm we will not charge and look for savings in other ways."

` Witness appeal AN APPEAL for witnesses has been made after a moped rider was seriously injuried in Pagham.

The 24-year-old Chichester man suffered a broken collarbone in the collision. He told police he had swerved to avoid a blue BMW which pulled out while he was travelling along Pagham Road. He lost control and fell from his moped.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "If anyone has any information about the collision, we would ask them to contact us."

Children get wigs with salon's hair donations f Waspi members with Alan Butcher

Women given pension support CAMPAIGNING women from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton met leading MPs as they staged a rally at a political conference.

Members of the Bognor and Chichester South group of Waspi used their attendance at the Labour Party conference to press their case for fairer pensions treatment.

Area co-ordinator Jill Robertson said: "The throng of women who gathered by the entrance to the conference at the Brighton Centre were greeted by many well-known passers-by.

"A lot made a point of coming to see us by coming out of the conference in their break, such as Alan Butcher, the party's election candidate in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, Richard

Leonard, who is a leading contender for leader of the Scottish Labour Party, and Yvette Cooper MP. "There were also a fair number of women who were not aware of Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) and were given information and encouraged to join their local group."

But Jill said news from Debbie Abrahams, the shadow secretary of state for work and pensions, had not been accepted by the group.

She had proposed a cut in the retirement age to 64 but with no mention of compensation for 1950sborn women who had seen their state pension age raised from 60 to 66 in just a few years.

A BOGNOR REGIS hair salon has joined forces with a leading hair styling brand in their latest campaign.

Lotus Styling, known for their eyecatching window displays, are working with GHD and the Little Princess Trust.

The Chop to Your Chin campaign has been running throughout September and will continue to the end of this month.

The salon, in Aldwick Road, is asking clients to donate seven inches or more to be made in to children's wigs.

The charity that makes real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatments and other illnesses.

Salon owner Daren Terry said: “We just can’t believe how generous people have been, donating their hair, which is such an important part of them.

"We have even had a couple of our long haired male clients donate their lovely locks too.”

The salon has already had 34 clients donate a whopping 352 inches of hair.

It takes 70 inches of hair to produce one wig which means the salon is well on its way to helping to provide five wigs for the charity.

The Little Princess Trust has given away over 5,000 free wigs since its inception

and with the rising demand for wigs, the charity needs more help than ever to generate hair donations.

Lotus Styling is also celebrating the recent success of second year salon apprentice, Rhiannon Hambleton, 20, who was a finalist in the prestigious National Hairdressers Federation’s Future Professionals Competition and senior stylist's Kier Terry's 25th anniversary at the salon.

CHICHESTER city band will bring a variety of popular marches, film music and classical pieces to the Alexandra Theatre for an afternoon of live music.

Founded in 1897, this brass band has served the Chichester and local

communities through many significant events over its long history.

As a highly traditional brass band, they perform throughout the year at fêtes and concerts.

They also support formal events in the city such as the annual Remembrance Sunday service.

As well as public concerts, the band has entered many contests over the years, which has resulted in playing

at some prestigious venues including Crystal Palace, Wembley Conference Centre, Cardiff International Arena and Birmingham’s magnificent Symphony Hall.

ONE OF Africa’s most respected guitarists, Habib Koité is back on tour in the UK for the first time in a decade.

Habib will be joined on stage by his longtime band Bamada, some of whom have played with him for almost 30 years.

Considered one of Mali’s leading musicians.

Habib is descended from a line of Khassonk é griots, traditional troubadours who provide musical entertainment at social gatherings and special events.

Coming from a family of 17 brothers and sisters, Habib would accompany his griot mother, and inherited a passion for music from his paternal grandfather who played the kamele n’ goni, a traditional four-stringed instrument associated with hunters from the Wassolou region of Mali.

Habib spoke of his musical style. He said: "I’m curious about all the music in the world, but I make music from Mali. In my country, we have so many beautiful rhythms and melodies. Many villages and communities have their own kind of music.

"Usually, Malian musicians play only their own ethnic music, but me, I go everywhere.

My job is to take all these traditions and to make something with them, to use them in my music."

Grate idea for lemons to put plenty of zest in your life WHEN most of us bring home lemons from the shop we either put them in the fridge or place then in a bowl on the counter.

THen when we go to eat one, we usually cut it up into wedges or slices. But did you know that there is a much better way to store and use lemons, which involves putting them in the freezer?

THat way you can easily grate them up later for a powerful, tasty health kick.

THe health benefits lemons can provide us with are mostly found in the skin and peel of the tangy citrus fruits. THese are often lost when people eat them because usually only the juice and pulp ends up getting used and consumed.

THe skin and peel is almost always tossed aside because it tastes a little horrid on its own.

However, when you use every part of a lemon, skin too, you can get between five and ten times more the amount of vitamins and other health benefits out of them.

Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, as well as vitamins B6, A, and E, plus folate, calcium, copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, protein, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, and phosphorus.

THe little yellow fruits also contain flavonoids and limonoids, two powerful antioxidants with natural cancer fighting and prevention properties.

Lemons have also been shown to help prevent diabetes, control high blood pressure, relieve indigestion and constipation, alleviate fevers, and reduce weight.

THe citric acid in them helps to fight germs and bacteria and lots of people use them to clean and

You want to grate it, rather than slice or squeeze it, because a majority of the health benefits are found in the peel and skin.

Most people use only the juice and pulp when they go to eat or cook with a lemon and so by grating it you end up using the entire fruit and gain the most health benefits from it.

Once the lemon is frozen solid, take it out of the freezer and cut off one end, so that it’s nice and flat. Place the flat side against the grater and begin grating it as if you were grating a block of cheese.

Doing it this way makes the lemon easier to hold steady and cuts down on the risk of it slipping while you’re shredding it up.

After you’re done, store the lemon gratings in a resalable container or use them to flavour food.

Don’t worry about ruining a recipe; grated lemon is not as overpowering as you may think it to be.

Instead, the lemony shreds complement and bring out the other flavours and what you get is a very unique type of flavouring that differs from that of squeezing lemon juice on food.

All you have to do is freeze lemons, it’s really that simple and your mind, body, and palettes will all benefit and thank you in the end. Enjoy!

Don't leaf these wines out for a tasty autumn Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

QUELLE semaine - Thursday night watching the legendary Chris Farlowe at the Empress in Littlehampton.

Friday night listening to the dulcet tones of Jo Harman at the Assembly Room in Chichester and culminating with The Voices of Abba - pictured right - on Saturday rocking the Chichester Inn. Back to matters oenological, Lidl has just launched its autumn collection which is predominantly French in terms of provenance, so I duly headed there to procure some interesting deals.

My first white wine selection was a 2016 Clos des Ronceveaux Touraine Sauvignon Blanc priced at £6.49 which restored my faith in the French variety of the grape.

The wine was decidedly fresh and citrussy, well balanced with good acidity and a perfect seafood or salmon wine, in my opinion.

Another white which sparked my interest was a 2016 Hans Michel Riesling and I was curious to see whether it would be of the dry variety.

Well, Bob's your uncle, this was reminiscent of Rieslings I used to imbibe

in the late seventies and had lime and apple on the palate and was fresh and dry with good acidity.

This fine Alsatian wine can be drunk on its own or would pair well with grilled salmon and is a good buy at £7 99.

As a curiosity, the Côtes du Jura Vieilles Vignes 2012 Chardonnay priced at £8.99

is a veritable unique example of winemaking, being doughy and nutty with baked apple and spices and complex notes which would complement soft cheeses such as Vacherin Mont d'Or. Yeasty and ideal for dry sherry drinkers, this unusual French wine is well worth a punt! If you fancy a bit of bubble, then

the Australian Seaview Brut, at a most enticing £5.99 price tag, is toasty and has good mousse with a light yeasty nose of baked apple, apricot, pear and lemon and represents outstanding value for a quality sparkling wine!

In terms of red wines, the 2016 Château Bonhomme Cuvée Clara is my wine of the week given its exceedingly low price of just £4.99 and flavours of red and black fruits and a good finish with a dryness to savour.

This red from the Languedoc Roussillon area of Southern France is a top buy -Allez-y!

Chicken and mushroom mini filo pies

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1/2 small leek, trimmed, halved, washed, finely chopped • 300g chicken thigh fillets, trimmed, finely chopped • 50g button mushrooms, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon finely shredded fresh sage leaves • 2 tablespoons plain flour • 3/4 cup Massel chicken style liquid stock • 8 sheets filo pastry • 90g butter, melted

Reverting to French mode, the 2015 L'Esprit Du Fief Crozes Hermitage priced at £7.99 subtly exuded red fruits and spice and is a wine I will re-visit sans hésitation.

Any other wines pictured above meet with my approval and I wish you a Bacchanalian October!

1. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add leek. Cook for 3 minutes or until softened.

Add chicken.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 6 minutes or until just cooked through. Add mushrooms and sage.

Cook for 2 minutes, or until mushroom is tender.

Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add stock.

Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until boiled and thickened. Remove from heat.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced.

Grease a 12-hole, 1 1/2 tablespoon capacity patty pan. Place 1 sheet filo on a flat surface. Brush with butter. Top with 1 sheet filo. Repeat layering with 2 sheets filo. Cut filo stack in half lengthways.

Cut each half into thirds.

INGREDIENTS

Cover remaining pastry with a damp tea towel so it doesn't dry out. Carefully press each filo piece into six holes of prepared patty pan, allowing overhang.

Repeat with remaining filo and butter.

3. Spoon 1 heaped tablespoon chicken mixture into each pastry case. Fold up sides to form a pouch and pinch to enclose the filling. Brush with butter and season with salt and pepper.

Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden. Stand for 3 minutes. Serve.

Community News & Views UNTAPPED potential exists in Bognor Regis for exciting job opportunities, it was revealed at the latest Hubbub meeting.

Business owners and creative professionals gathered at the Pier Hotel last Wednesday to discuss the town’s future digital hub at the railway station and the employment it could garner.

Jennie Lloyd, from Wired Sussex in Brighton, one of the companies developing the hub, explained their objectives.

She said: “This is all to help the growth and support of the digital community in Bognor Regis. We’ve been running these ‘hubs’ since last year. There’s such a friendly, informal feel about them and they’ve been doing really well.”

Her colleague, Phil Jones, was keen the Hubbubs continued.

“It’s great for everyone to learn what other people doing and it provides more opportunities,” he said.

Mr Jones also praised recent changes to the University of Chichester, whose new engineering and digital technology park will see a boost in student numbers in the town.

He said: “There’s a real opportunity with what’s happening at the University of Chichester. An extra 1,500 students will come to Bognor Regis. That’s going to be really great for the town."

Presenting his ideas at the monthly meeting was Mike Williams, a business development director for agency Strawberry Soup.

The Felpham resident said: “There’s a lot of potential here for the digital hub. In Bognor Regis, we are close to Brighton, Portsmouth and London.

"There’s so much work from all these places. Just because we are based here it does not mean you can’t pick up really exciting jobs."

Angela Taylor, who runs Panda Police Car Hire in Bognor Regis, said: “The whole idea of being able to have a collaborative, creative hub is amazing. It will be a portal where we can work with other people, not just in Bognor Regis – but in businesses outside of the town."

MEMBERS of staff at a Yapton care home have taken part in the world's longest inflatable obstacle course.

Their active efforts raised £340 to help the residents at Warmere Court in Downview Way by improving their garden.

The challenge was based at Fontwell Park racecourse. It involved a series of interactive and wacky obstacles spread across various unique themed zones.

These included a lava zone, a jungle zone and an ocean zone.

Participants had to start by jumping off a 20ft platform into a crash bag before they attempted to complete the course in the quickest time possible.

Mary Latter, home manager for Warmere Court, said: "I'm so proud of my staff and their determination to do something for our residents who we are all so fond of.

"They all did amazingly well and the residents will be thrilled.

The money raised will be used to build a pergola for the garden as they love to sit outside."

An activity co-ordinator at the Shaw Healthcare-run home, Amber Porter, said: "As exhausting as it was, it was so much fun to do something a little different.

"Thank you to everyone who supported us and helped to raise a great amount of money."

The inflatable obstacle course was 1,000ft long and its five zones included more than 30 obstacles for adults and teenagers to tackle. Its associated inflatable village included a minicourse for the under-12s as well as a section for under-5s.

The village included a Pulsar Laser Quest, crazy golf and bouncy castles as well as refreshment stalls.

SOME 300 dogs and their proud owners enjoyed perfect weather conditions at the annual Boxgrove Companion Dog Show with obedience.

The pets were entered into a selection of 25 classes.

The 'Have A Go' agility section, organised by Mad about Dogs, was extremely popular.

It was busy all day and more than 100 dogs enjoyed having a go.

Together with the many stalls, dog show entries and sponsorship, this enabled £3,000 to be raised.

The profits will be shared between two charities, Boxgrove Priory and Boxgrove Village Hall.

The main results of the winning dogs and their owners were:

CREATIVE gardeners in Bersted have had their talents recognised.

The winners of this year's Bersted in Bloom competition were presented with their certificates by Bersted Parish Council chairman Brian Knight, at Jubilee Community Hall.

He thanked the five judges for giving up their time to take on the difficult task of choosing the winners.

A THEORBO provided a visually impressive way to start the guitar gala concert, pictured below, at West Sussex Guitar Club's opening night for 2017/18.

The instrument, played by Jonatan Bought, is more than two metres long and looks like a lute that has been painfully stretched on a rack. It has 14 strings and had to be carefully manoeuvred on stage at the Regis School of Music.

Sam Brown accompanied Jonatan on his Renaissance lute. There followed three songs by John Dowland sung beautifully by Duncan Appleby (tenor) and accompanied sensitively by Sam. These were Unquiet Thoughts, Flow My Tears and Can She Excuse.

Gala reviewer Debbie Burford said: "Jonatan then told us a little about the theorbo which originated in Italy in the 16th century in Italian it is called chitarrone, which means 'big guitar' and is a single-strung instrument unlike the lute which is double-strung."

A lovely duet of theorbo and lute followed - Ciaconna by Alessandro Piccinini. Sam then played two solos - O'Carolan's Welcome and Captain O'Kane.

It was then the turn of Laura Snowden to become the first of the night's performers to play classical guitar on her return visit to the club. She began with Bach's Allemande from Suite No 3 BWV 1009.

Her next piece, one of her compositions, was the very hypnotic and beautiful, Anpao.

The first half of the concert finished with Regondi's impressive Introduction and Caprice Op. 23 where Laura demonstrated her mastery of fast scale passages and lots of slides.

Fantasia for Guitar & Piano by the Swiss composer Hance Haug began the second half and was played with great expertise by Jonatan on guitar and Irena Radic at the grand piano.

"There followed three movements of a Sonata (Allegro, Andante, Allegro Vivo) by Spanish composer, Joaquin Turina, which Jonatan played beautifully on solo guitar," said Debbie.

Iaonnis Theodoridis came to the stage to finish the concert programme with a selection of solo guitar works.

He began with Impromptu (Michael Berkeley) and followed that with a miniature by the Danish composer, Ben Sorensen Shadow Siciliano. These led up to his finishing piece, Tres Piezas Espanolas, to round off his first performance on an English stage for three years. The acclaim from the audience led to an encore of a charming guitar duet from Jonatan and Ioannis.

The club's artistic director, Sasha Levtov, said it was a wonderful concert to begin its 25th year and he hoped the musicians returned.

SUPPORTERS of St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester are being urged to take up a challenge in the new year on its behalf.

Some spectacular choices to enjoy 2018 are being offered to those who want to join Team Wilf.

These include the largest annual fundraising event on the planet, abseiling 100m down one of the south's most iconic landmarks and throwing themselves out of a perfectly good plane 10,000 feet up. The money raised by those who take part will help to raise much-needed funds for the hospice's work in the surrounding community.

First up is the truly uplifting and jaw-dropping experience of the Leap for Love tandem skydive at Old Sarum Airfield in Wiltshire on March 24.

This will offer the chance to freefall from a plane before parachuting to the ground attached to a qualified instructor.

A month later comes the chance to fill one of the hospice's five places in the 2018 London Marathon. The fundraising target for anyone who wants to take part is £2,250.

The fun continues into the summer with an exclusive St Wilfrid's abseiling day on July 21 at the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. There are 40 places available for those who can raise at least £250.

New for next year is a chance to cycle for the hospice in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100.

Over the hill history on the South Downs

THE SOUTH DOWNS are a chalk ridge formed in the late Cretaceous period (100 to 60 million years ago).

THe chalk has layers of flint nodules, often used as building material and for flint tools.

THe Downs stretch as far west as Winchester and eastwards to Eastbourne. Its highest point, Blackdown, stands at 919 feet (280m).

North of the Downs is the Western Weald, formed of sandstone and clay layers. THere are four major rivers that cut through the Downs to the English Channel; the Cuckmere, Ouse, Adur and Arun.

People’s activity has shaped the South Downs over the last 500,000 years. Evidence of occupation on the Downs goes back to the Palaeolithic (from at least 900,000 years ago until around 9500BC) and Mesolithic (9500BC - 4000 BC) periods evidenced through the remains of flint tools and other features of the landscape.

Later in the Neolithic period (4000BC – 2500BC) people left behind causewayed enclosures, long barrows and flint mines. THe flint mines were still being used into the early and middle Bronze Age (2500BC – 800BC).

THe South Downs Way, which visitors walk and cycle today, has its origins in an ancient track that has been used by humans for more than 2,000 years.

Recently, as part of a three-year Heritage Lottery Funded project by the South Downs National Park, with support from Chichester District Council and English Heritage, vast field networks, found to date back to at least the Bronze Age were uncovered by a scanning technique called LiDAR -a remote sensing technique that allows the collection of topographic information over large areas of landscape using a sensor mounted on a plane or helicopter.

created, as woodland was cleared for grazing and agriculture, as settlements developed in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It suggested the area’s pre-Roman civilisation could have been on a par with that of the ancient Egyptians or Greeks.

THe lighter soils of the chalk were easier to settle on and to work, but cereal crops grew better on the fertile loam (a soil of clay, sand and silt) soils. THe land with lighter soils tended to be used for grazing.

By the Iron Age, farming was more settled and ploughing heavier soils more usual.

Defensive hill forts, such as THe Trundle, located to the north of Chichester were also established in the Iron Age. THe most impressive Iron Age hill fort was that at Cissbury. It is thought possible that Cissbury and the Trundle forts were embryonic market towns providing services to the surrounding Downland areas.

For the Romans, the Downs, as well as the coastal plain, were of military and economic importance. THe first Roman villas in Sussex were among the earliest in Britain dating from the few decades after the invasion.

THese strung out along the coastal plain from Fishbourne to Eastbourne.

THese varied from fairly humble cottages of just a few rooms and a few acres of land, to the most extravagant establishments that must have been the centre of extensive farming estates.

Medieval settlements on the South Downs comprised of mainly nucleated settlements set within common arable land. Deer parks were also one of the dominant features of the landscape of eastern Hampshire and western Sussex between the 12th and 16th centuries.

THese comprised of enclosed areas of wooded pasture bounded by earthwork banks and ditches.

Sheep-corn systems of agriculture dominated parts of the South Downs from the medieval period to the 19th century. In this style of farming, the sheep grazing the open downs provided a valuable source of manure supporting the production of corn.

Major changes took place in the post medieval period. THe communal aspects of medieval agriculture began to be replaced by farms run by individuals. THe 16th and 17th centuries saw the enclosure of large expanses of common woodland and large areas of arable land begin to form a distinctive landscape of small irregular fields enclosed by hedgerows.

THe agricultural depression of the late 1800s saw a decline in the importance of sheep farming on the downland areas of the Downs.

However, World War One saw an increased need for home-grown food to replace foreign imports that were no longer maintainable.

A further depression was experienced in the interwar period before the land was again reclaimed for agricultural activities during the Second World War. By 1942, the military required use of parts of the South Downs for training purposes. Some settlements such as Stanmer in East Sussex were even abandoned to be used for battle training.

After the Second World War, developments in machinery, artificial pesticides and fertilisers and subsidies allowed for increased cultivation of the land. With this came the extensive destruction of the chalk downland as well as of archaeological features.

Recognition of the importance of the landscape was finally marked in 2011 by the establishment of the South Downs Park Authority (SDNPA), now responsible for some 1,600 km2 of landscape.

In May, 2016, SDNPA became the newest International Dark Sky Reserve.

Bright showing for Chi as rain fails to PostSport dampen Sussex cross-country relay A RECORD number of teams lined up for the Sussex Cross-Country relay championships at Goodwood, producing a fine display of running.

Drizzly rain for the first couple of races and intermittent showers during the afternoon failed to put a damper on the racing.

With dozens of competitors making their way around the course, it proved to be a successful day on home turf for Chichester Runners.

In the under-13 boys race, Chi's Joe McClarnon took third after recording a fastest lap of 10 minutes 10 seconds, just behind Henry Yelling (Brighton & Hove 9:50) and Nicholas Holland-Ellidge’s (Crawley - 9:53).

That performance was matched in the under-15s by Liam Dunne, who clocked 9:13 behind Luke Ellard (Worthing - 9:00) and Crawley’s Calum Stone (9:13).

While those individual successes were welcomed, it was the team performance where most eyes were focused.

There was drama in the senior men's race.

After Chichester had led on the first leg of the race, Brighton & Hove took up the running and never look like being headed. They

finished comfortably clear of Lewes with Chichester holding on to take the bronze medals. However, after they were found to have fielded a 'non-Sussex' runner, Brighton & Hove were kicked out of the competition, promoting Chi to silver.

In the junior races, first blood of the afternoon went to the Hastings under-13 boys’ team, who stormed to victory on the third and final leg. In the girls' under-13 event, Chichester were clear winners from Brighton & Hove, with Lewes taking third place.

The under-15 races were also held together, with Worthing establishing a good lead on the opening leg and romping home well clear of Crawley and Lewes to take the boys title while Brighton & Hove came through on the third leg to win the girls' race.

The senior, veterans and under-17 races were held together and the senior women’s race saw a convincing victory for the Arena 80 team, who led from start to finish with Haywards Heath in second place and Crawley third. Chichester won the under-17 ladies title from Crawley and Brighton & Hove while Brighton & Hove won the under-17 men's title from Chichester and Crawley.

DARTS: Graeme Dutton produced two man of the match displays - but it was not enough to fire Friary Arms to consecutive wins in week three and four of the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out darts league.

CHICHESTER RFC hope a trip to secondbottom Gravesend will be the perfect tonic after the Blues slumped to their first loss of the campaign.

Scott Ashley's side have been dominant all year, winning four on the trot on their return to Division One South.

But that run was halted abruptly with the visit of Cobham to Oaklands Park, the Surrey side coming out 41-27 winners.

After taking the lead in the second half thanks to dominant forward play, Chi began to get more adventurous - something that would ultimately cost them, with Cobham scoring two tries and a conversion to take them to victory.

That defeat sees Chi slip to third, level on points with CS Rugby and four points behind unbeaten leaders Medway.

The Blues now head to the Kent side of the Thames tomorrow (2.30pm) looking to find their winning stride once again.

Speaking after the defeat, club spokesman

Roger Gould said: "As they did in 2014, Cobham beat Chi by using fast and effective counter attacks against a vulnerable defence in open play.

"Chi had much more possession and territory but their tackling was poor and the visitors took full advantage, three of their tries coming from Route One breaks."

After falling behind to an early try, left winger Ben Robson touched down for a try at corner to level the score at 7-7.

A Henry Anscombe penalty and five-pointer from Charlie Wallace added to the Blues tally.

But mistakes cost them dear, with the visitors scoring twice more from breakaways to go in at the break 24-17 up After the restart, the Blues meant business and it wasn't long before Wallace crashed over for his second of the day. Then Tom Belcher dived over to put them 27-24 in front.

But Chi fell apart, letting Cobham take charge, which ultimately cost the home side even a losing bonus point.

The Hampshire Avenue side welcome fourth-place Fordingbridge tomorrow (3pm) eager to show they are a match for the top teams in Hampshire One. Last weekend's narrow 19-12 defeat at Burnaby Road was Bognor's second of the season and leaves them third, six points behind leaders Millbrook.

They will be looking to close that gap against the visitors from the New Forest who have won two and lost one of their opening three fixtures.

Bognor could have secured more than a losing bonus point from their trip to Portsmouth.

After dominating the early exchanges, it was the home side that took the lead.

Pat Gains levelled things up, finishing superbly in the corner after some fine work from Bognor skipper Shane Stevens.

But two more US tries before the break sent them in 19-5 up at the break. Flying winger Chris Clare ensured the deficit was reduced, beating four men before a penalty try was awarded.

Lions eye up back-to-back wins in rollercoaster season

Undefeated Sids urged on SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce believes his young side can compete with the best after taking their unbeaten league start into October.

The Green and Golds suffered a major setback in the off-season when they were denied promotion to SCFL Division One because of administrative errors.

But, undeterred, Pearce and his side have continued to make progress on and off the pitch. Despite a number of injuries to some older heads, the Sids' young side have proved to be more than a match against more experienced opponents.

A 2-0 win over SCFL Division two league leaders Jarvis Brook last weekend means Pearce's side sit fifth, three points off top spot. Pearce believes recent results have shown that his team are ahead of where they were this time last year.

He told the Post: "We've been doing OK to be fair, we've had a couple of draws in our first eight games but we're still unbeaten going into October, which can't be bad.

"If you look at how we did last season, we have picked up points this time round where we didn't last term.

"That's pleasing. As for Saturday, all went quite well, which was down to hard work and the lads carrying out instructions."

After a tense and goalless first half, strikes from Callum Dowdell and Nehniah McKenley-Burke secured all three points for Sids against the side from Crowborough.

Pearce said: "They are a good side, Jarvis Brook. They are one of about three or four that are really decent sides in the division and they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the year. But it is no good beating them and not picking up points against some of the other teams."

Next up is a trip to basement team Ferring tomorrow (3pm), who have won just once in a season and a half.

And Pearce urged his side not to be complacent against a team who he claims are 'much improved'. He said: "They have some good ex-county league players so they will be no pushovers.

"We will go there not to lose. If we get one or two back from injury, that will make us stronger. Saturday proved they can compete with the best in the division."

PAGHAM'S search for consistency continues as the Lions followed up one of the poorest performances of the season with a convincing cup win.

The young squad at Nyetimber Lane have made great strides in recent months under the joint direction of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds. But they have failed to string together a series of positive results, chalking up four wins and four defeats in the SCFL Premier so far.

The up and down season continued last weekend when there were no excuses from the Lions after they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to bottom side Arundel.

That was followed up by a convincing 4-0 victory over SCFL Division One side Seaford in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup, with Callum Overton and Joe Kilhams both netting a brace.

Next up is a trip to Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (3pm) before a visit from Lancing on Tuesday (7.30pm). After netting eight times in the past three matches and conceeding only three, the Lions will be aiming for backto-back wins for only the second time this season.

Chi fly but Selsey's run ends Ne

CHICHESTER City have rocketed to the top of the table after firing in a remarkable 23 goals in just six games.

After a less than convincing start to the SCFL Premier season, Miles Rutherford's side have found their stride going the month of September unbeaten.

The major factor in the purple patch was their attacking potency, with the Lillywhites averaging nearly four goals a game.

That run was continued last weekend when Chi defeated Littlehampton Town 3-0 away, Scott Jones scoring twice to take his tally to 12

in his past six matches and 14 for the season.

Ben Pashley scored the third late on.

The victory took Rutherford's team to the summit with a goal difference of plus 18, albeit with other sides having a game in hand.

But the mood was dampened in midweek when Chi lost in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup to Haywards Heath Town.

Next up for the Lillywhites is a home match against Horsham YMCA tomorrow (3pm) before a trip to Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Elsewhere, Selsey's unbeaten start to the SCFL Division One campaign was ended by Ringmer at the Bunn Leisure Stadium on Saturday.

Steve Bailey's young side have been in fine form so far this campaign, winning six and drawing once in their opening seven matches.

But the unbeaten run was brought to a rather tame end last weekend when mid-table Ringmer defeated the Blues 2-0.

Selsey managed to bounce back in midweek, winning through in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup with a 4-2 extra-time victory over Langney Wanderers.

Goals from Ciaran McGreal, Morgan Forry and Jake Goulding (2) sealed passage to the next round. Tomorrow sees the Blues return to league action as they travel to Mile Oak (3pm), looking to get their league campaign back on track.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham's rise up the table continues. The Robins bounced their way up to fourth after a third win in a row at home to Montpelier Villa last weekend.

Strikes from Grant Radmore (2) and Callum Coker secured the win for Gary Lines' side which sets up a trip to second-place Jarvis Brook nicely.

With Bosham just three points off top spot and momentum with the Walton Lane side, they are well-placed to set up a repeat of last season's title win.

City in seven heaven before grudge match CHICHESTER City Ladies will be out for revenge against Lewes when the Sussex rivals go toe to toe again this weekend.

The Rookettes took the spoils a fortnight ago when they beat Matt Wright's side at Oaklands Park.

But, buoyed from a dramatic 7-4 victory at Swindon Town last weekend, Chi make the trip to The Dripping Pan on Sunday (2pm) full of confidence and keen to seal back-to-back victories in the FA Women's Premier League South.

The Green and Whites started brightly against a young Swindon side.

They took the lead when Lauren Cheshire fired in a corner from the right and Charley Wilson-Blakely rose strongly to head home

near the back post.

With almost half an hour gone, Chi doubled their lead, with Holly Wride grabbing her first goal of the season after overcoming a knee injury.

Wilson-Blakely added a third before the break, hitting an unstoppable shot home from 30 yards before Cherelle Khassal rounded off a one-on-one to make it four.

The Robins pulled one back before the half was out but any hopes of a comeback were dented when Wilson-Blakely netted her hattrick just after the restart.

Swindon replied with three goals of their own, to make it a nailbiting final few minutes for Chi until 16-year-old substitute, Alex Collingham and Khassal rounded off the rout.

ROCKS sharpshooter Ollie Pearce has revealed the secret to his deadly form - the support of his team-mates and a gruelling fitness regime.

The striker continued his fine spell last weekend, netting a brace in the 2-0 FA Cup third preliminary round win against Eastbourne Borough.

That took Pearce's tally to seven in 11 matches so far - but the son of former Rocks' legend Robbie says he has his teammates to thank for his blistering start to life in National League South.

With a tricky match against fifth-placed Dartford to come tomorrow, the striker hopes the Rocks can use the momentum in the cup to come good after a run of eight league games without a win.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "We got off to a good start but the last few weeks has been more difficult. We knew it wasn’t all going to be plain sailing but we've had a good result in the FA Cup and now we're looking to kick on up the table."

The Rocks' dip in form coincided with injuries to Pearce and a number of other firstteam players.

That saw Bognor slip from fifth to their current spot of 18th, just two places about the relegation zone.

But, with those players now returning to full fitness, Pearce hopes to carry on his impressive goal-scoring form - something he unselfishly

puts down to his team-mates.

He said: "As a team, we are a lot fitter this year than last, which means we are creating more chances through a lot of different channels. If we are getting five chances a game then I am more likely to score.

"At the same time we have come up against some big teams this year who go forward early and are very clinical. So, even if we go two up, we know they will put pressure on us."

As if to prove how fit he and the rest of the team are, Pearce marked his return to the starting line-up against Gloucester City by lifting up his top to reveal the results of the hard work.

He jokes: "That was a little bit of banter with Dabba [coach Darin Killpartrick] after I was out for a few weeks!"

Pearce will be hoping to take that goalscoring form into tomorrow’s match against Dartford, a team who have netted the most and have the biggest goal difference of any side in the National South. Then next Saturday it is on to a tie against league rivals Oxford City in the FA Cup where a victory would take the Rocks into the first round proper.

Pearce said: "The draw could have been lot worse as they [Oxford] are a team very similar to us in terms of league position at this stage of the season. But the match at Dartford is very much our focus. We will all be concentrating on that and then we will think about the cup."

Team as happy as ever - Pearce IT'S SOMETHING that managers at all levels continually search for. But it seems like the Rocks genuinely have that ever-elusive magic dust known as team spirit.

Such closeness has been central to Bognor's rise up the non-league pyramid in recent years. And it is the reason why, despite some fans pointing fingers elsewhere, the players themselves took full responsibility after the team went seven games without a win.

It is also why the players celebrate goals with a collective group hug and ear to ear smiles this is not forced ecstasy; it is genuine and can only serve the Rocks well moving forward.

Speaking this week after the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Eastbourne Borough, striker Ollie Pearce, who scored twice in the win over the Sports, said: "We're as happy as we've ever been. It's a good changing room to be in - it's always bubbling and lively but serious when it needs to be.

"We know a lot of fans were getting on the back of the management but you can’t put the blame on one person. We've had injuries, we've been unlucky and perhaps we've been sloppy at times. But there’s no change in the mood of the camp and we're all working to get as high as we can in the league."

MOST of you will know that I'm writing this struggling with a shoulder injury.

Firstly, thank you to all the Rocks fans who have wished me well after I suffered the injury against Gloucester City.

It is what it is. It is not ideal, but it seems to be on the mend. I think the word I use is frustrating.

It's not something that I am used to. I've been asked if I remember much of what went on after I suffered the fall.

Once I got injured, then I was taken off and was waiting in the car park for an ambulance that never came.

I heard we went two up, which was well deserved. Even for the 20 minutes I was on the pitch, I felt we were the better side - we had a lot of the ball in their box and a number of chances but we didn't score.

I did feel that once we got one or two up that should have been that and all three points won.

But, naturally, when you are on a poor run and have not won for a while, things do not always go that way.

As the match went on, we invited on the pressure until they equalised late on. Although it was not a bad point, it is two points dropped.

As for me, well I was in the car park with a dislocated shoulder which was still out of the socket. I couldn't move due to excruciating pain. When we spoke to the paramedics again, we heard they had 17 outstanding calls so I was taken to hospital by car.

It took 15 minutes in the car to the hospital in Chi and, with all the bumps on the way, I've never been in worse pain.

When I got there, I was in and out in about 40 minutes. They told me that nothing was broken and then, within five minutes, two hospital staff had forced the shoulder back in and told me to rest it up for six to eight weeks.

I've been lucky as I've not had too many serious injuries before. I had a issue with my right shoulder which put me out for four weeks once and some

ankle ligament damage but on the whole I've been OK. At the moment I can't train at all. I can't run, swim or cycle, I can't do anything. I just have to rest but, in a couple of weeks, when the sling comes off, I'll be able to do some light running and lighter training sessions I do miss it - you wouldn't think I would, but once I missed one session I was itching to get playing again.

I did manage to get to Eastbourne, though, and sat on the bench for the match.

That was one of those games where there was no pressure on us and no one expected us to win. To be fair to Ollie, he worked his socks off and deserved the two goals.

I must say I thought Tommy Block, who was deputising because of injuries, marshalled the midfield well too. In general, it looked like we wanted it more and had much more quality in all areas.

Even when Sami got injured and Corey came on, there were no worries. It was just a mature performance. I was sat next to Doug Tuck on the bench and we were both saying how relaxed we were, which is quite rare with ten minutes to go in the cup.

Next up is Oxford City away.

Ideally it would have been at home but it's a winnable game against a side in our division. We will turn up with right mentality and hopefully get the win before a dream tie with Pompey in the next round!

First, though, is the trip to Dartford, a side who we know well from back in the Ryman League days.

They will be very physical and, looking at their league position, they are doing very well. But everyone can beat everyone in this division. So as long as we have the right attitude who knows?

As for myself, I'm concentrating on not doing anything too soon. I would like to be back for the first round of the FA Cup because I've never played in it.
