THat was the view of the majority of councillors at Chichester District Council who this week agreed to wait for Highways England's next Road

Investment Strategy programme, which will run between 2020 and 2025.

It came as the deadline of the end of September approached which was the last chance for funding in Highways England's current funding round.

Just three councillors abstained from voting while all others voted for leader councillor Tony Dignum's proposal to wait for the RIS2 funding, instead of RIS1.

West Sussex county councillors met

to discuss the issue shortly before The Chichester Post went to print.

He said: "Some may think we should go for RIS1 anyway and take the money and in this respect we have heard this very morning from Highways England that they have given preliminary consideration to the mitigation measures we put forward in the 2016 consultation to improve option 2.

"Highways England have stated today

that the main mitigations we proposed cannot be incorporated in their preferred route.

"Furthermore, the choice of RIS1 would not achieve anything as Highways England will move forward only with agreement between the councils."

Going for the second round of funding would mean work would start in 2023 as opposed to 2020.

College launches its rugby academy

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER COLLEGE has officially launched its new rugby academy, which is supported by the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

THe college has been unveiled as one of 21 RFU Focus Colleges, part of a programme which aims to support player development and build new routes into the sport.

THe academy will provide structured, high quality coaching to rugby players studying across a variety of courses at Chichester College.

THey will also benefit from individual technical development as well as physical development with the use of the facilities at the college sports centre.

THe college academy is looking to build links with local clubs, to provide pathways into the sport and aid player development.

Steve Woolcombe, Chichester College lecturer and new director of rugby, said: “THis is a fantastic project and we are looking forward to working closely with the RFU to encourage more of our students to take up rugby.

“We’re already seeing the impact, with a great turnout at our first training sessions and attracting some brilliant support through shirt sponsorship.

“And, most importantly, it will help to provide opportunities for our players to develop their involvement in the sport and, hopefully, help them to pursue careers in the sport.”

Over the past three years, the RFU has been delivering a range of targeted rugby programmes at colleges across England and the launch of Focus College sees the RFU working with FE providers to help push the development of rugby union.

THe colleges will work with the RFU to increase their player base and develop rugby in three main areas – strength (developing opportunities for college students), transition (improving the numbers of players moving from colleges to clubs) and sustain (improving player welfare and improving the quality of coaching and refereeing in colleges).

21 colleges have been selected for the 2017-18 season, including Chichester College.

Hamish Morton, further education RFU development officer, said: “We are delighted to welcome Chichester College into the England Rugby Focus Colleges programme.

"THis partnership hopes to develop participants through rugby, both on and off the pitch, creating employable young people with transferable skills.”

Andrew Green, executive principal at Chichester College, added: “THis is an exciting chance for Chichester College to play a key role in developing the sport in Chichester and the wider area.

“We are committed to offering our students the best opportunities, and this is just one of the ways we are able to deliver just that.

“We are proud to be home to an outstanding sports department, as we know how important sport, fitness and wellbeing is to ensuring our students can flourish."

University jumps up the league tables as all hard work pays off THE University of Chichester has moved up 10 places in the league table to rank 72nd in THe Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

High scores in the National Student Survey this year are responsible for this climb ‘combined with a strong track record in rankings’ according to the Guide.

Teaching quality has also improved, up to 13th place from 27th last year, while student experience has risen to 17th from 40th.

Chichester was ranked University of the Year for Student Retention in both 2014 and 2017 and awarded silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework by an independent panel.

THe guide is one of the most authoritative and widely respected guides to universities in the UK and is an essential and comprehensive tool for students and parents at home and abroad.

It ranks 129 UK institutions according to nine criteria including teaching quality, student experience, completion rates, degree results and graduate prospects.

Vice-chancellor Professor Jane Longmore said: “Our jump of 10 places in the Sunday Times League Table is a great credit to all of our hard-working staff, and yet another indication of the outstanding quality of the student experience at Chichester.”

Quit the habit

Thousands enjoy a thrill at inflatable obstacle course

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE longest, continuous, inflatable obstacle course in the world has bounced into West Sussex.

THe 1,000ft long Labyrinth Challenge was at Fontwell Park Racecourse on Saturday.

THe thrilling course began with participants jumping off a 20ft platform into a crash bag and concluded with a slide down a giant inflatable ship.

THere was also an Inflatable Village of fun to explore featuring a selection of attractions.

THe course featured five zones and more than 30 obstacles for teenagers and adults to tackle.

Labyrinth Challenge, said: “We had a hugely enjoyable and very successful weekend at Fontwell Park with over 2,000 people attending and tackling our huge inflatable obstacles.

“THis was the final Labyrinth Challenge of the year and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and testing their skills and stamina on the course.

“THank you to the people of Chichester for making our last event so much fun.

We’ve had a brilliant time taking the inflatables around the UK and hope to bring the Labyrinth Challenge back to Sussex next year.”

THe Inflatable Village included a mini course for the under 12's and a section for the under fives.

It also featured Pulsar Laser Quest, crazy golf and bouncy castles, plus refreshments and much more.

Post ` Poetry reading POET and editor Jeremy Page will take on a poetry reading at Chichester Library.

THe event, on THursday, October 5, at 7.30pm, will also give local writers the chance to read their own poems.

SMOKERS are being encouraged to ditch the habit this October.

It is hoped that more than 1,500 West Sussex people will give up smoking altogether post-Stoptober.

It will surpass the number successfully supported through their quit attempt last year. THe population of adult smokers countywide is 106,000.

West Sussex County Council is appealing to hopeful converts in the lead up to Stoptober’s 28-day stop smoking challenge starting on Sunday.

THe council’s cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, said: “Giving up smoking doesn’t have to be a long, arduous and lonely journey.

“Our public health team continues to work closely with GP practices and pharmacies to offer the best free of charge stop smoking support for West Sussex residents.

“Our message to residents is please don’t delay any longer and take that first step to improving your long-term health for you, and your family.

“One way to kick-start your quit attempt would be to book an appointment with a stop smoking advisor today via the West Sussex Wellbeing website.”

In 2015/16, it was found that 1,332 hospital admissions in West Sussex were attributed to smoking.

` Charities urged to apply for funds CHARITIES and community groups are missing out on applying for funding available from West Sussex County Council with some areas yet to receive a single application in 2017/18.

THe Community Initiative Fund provides grants targeted at supporting communities to deliver local projects in their area.

THe scheme aims to encourage residents to be active, connect with each other, develop, learn and give back to the local community.

THe county local committees in Mid-Sussex, Arun, Horsham, Chichester and Crawley currently have a significant amount of community initiative funding available.

Last year, a total of £371,091 was awarded to good causes across West Sussex.

Debbie Kennard, county council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “We have some very deserving community groups in our county so would encourage people to come forward and make the most of the opportunity. THere are also two other funding schemes available which people can find more out about via our website.”

Community Initiative Fund awards range from £1,000 to £5,000.

Holiday park work reaches milestone

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS to develop a Selsey holiday park are continuing as part of a £16m refurbishment programme.

Bunn Leisure is continuing to invest heavily in a new state-of-the-art entertainment complex and a purposebuilt main reception and head office facility.

THe 300-acre holiday park on the Selsey Peninsula is split into four villages and is mid-way through its refurbishment programme.

THe popular White Horse entertainment complex will be levelled next month, with a new complex, including a larger, Riviera-style swimming pool, restaurant, bar and 10 pin bowling alley, set to open by the end of 2018.

THe White Horse was a much-loved feature at Bunn Leisure, but some parts date back to 1959 when the park was created.

It has seen many acts grace its stage over the years, from top singers and tribute bands to comedians and theme nights.

Managing director John Bunn, pictured right, said: “THe White Horse has been very successful and I love the club room, but the new complex will be a very modern 21st century entertainment venue – much larger and with fantastic new facilities for our parks.

“We spend nearly £2million every year on our entertainment, and with a club that is almost double the current size, we

will be able to welcome over 1,000 guests and host our bigger productions.

“If you take the business as a whole, we are busier than ever – the turnover has quadrupled, so it is very vibrant and successful.

“We continue to re-invest heavily in our facilities and parks which clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment as an innovative leader in the UK family holiday sector.

“THe money we are investing into these latest improvements takes the total reinvestment value in the parks over the last 20 years to £75m.”

Bunn Leisure’s new head office and visitor reception is now complete, and staff are currently relocating in stages to their new offices.

Bunn Leisure generates more than £60m for the local economy and the new developments will create future employment opportunities for the region.

Residents get advice on how to make the most of recycling PEOPLE have been advised about how to recycle as Chichester District Council marked National Recycling Week.

THe council's waste and recycling team joined forces with supermarkets including Tesco, Waitrose, Budgens and the Co-op, to support and encourage residents to increase their recycling. Local councillors and officers have been on hand to deliver information about recycling and waste minimisation, and to answer any questions that residents have.

In order to see as many residents as possible the team visited Tesco Extra, Chichester; Waitrose, Chichester;

Budgens in Midhurst; and the Co-op in Selsey.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for contract services at the council, said: "We estimate that around 57 per cent of what is placed in the black household waste bin could actually be reduced, reused or recycled.

“I urge everyone to really help us and to think before throwing anything out and ask yourself, can it be recycled at home instead?

"We accept paper, card, tins, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, glass jars, aerosols, foil, plastic pots, tubs and trays - even tablet blister packs – in the district recycling bins."

This event is geared to raise vital funds for Guild Care’s dementia services, these help and support local people in the community living with dementia by offering care homes that are dedicated to dementia care like Haviland House in Goring-by-Sea. There is also the Bradbury Wellbeing Centre which is adjoining to Haviland House that gives support and sanctuary to people with dementia in the community, prioritising the needs of individuals and providing a fun and happy environment.

Guild Care understands that caring for a loved one can be exhausting and isolating experience, so they strive to provide dementia services to not only allow people living with dementia to have a place to feel comfortable and understood but for their carers to get advice and support, making sure no one has to feel alone on this journey.

There is also a family rate of £25.00 for 2 adults and 2 children under 16 years of age and a corporate rate of £50 for business groups to put in a team. Community grants awarded to Selsey and Sidlesham

THe two areas will see funds to help improve and expand on projects.

THe Ferry Farm Community Solar project, situated between Selsey and Sidlesham, has announced seven local projects which will benefit from the first phase of awards provided via its community grant fund. THe 2017 grant fund will total £40,000 across two application phases.

THe successful projects are: Sidlesham Parish Council – for children's playground repairs.

Sidlesham Good Companions Transport Club - to support a community transport scheme for the elderly and those with limited mobility.

Selsey Amateur Choral and Operatic Society – to help cover the costs of running an amateur theatrical and music club which holds annual shows.

Selsey Carpet Bowls Club – to pay for new equipment for use by 45 local players.

Arts Dream Selsey – to support the ‘Out of the Ashes’ project for THe Academy, Selsey, which will retrace the memories of the school through images, stories, text and an online archive of information.

Youth Dream Selsey Ltd - for the

ongoing provision of the Bridge Youth Support Centre which provides educational support, counselling, sexual health advice and support to young people in Selsey and Sidlesham and students of THe Academy, Selsey.

Selseyworks - for delivery of an advice service to help households in Selsey and Sidlesham who are struggling with their bills.

THe Ferry Farm Community Solar project is a five megawatt solar array just north of Selsey.

Ferry Farm Community Solar Ltd, a community benefit society governed by local people, raised over £300,000 through a community share offer last year. THe first share interest payments were paid in July this year.

Ben Cooper, Ferry Farm Community Solar director, said: “We are delighted to announce this first phase of funding, which supports local charities and community groups in Selsey and Sidlesham."

Chris Butler, of Arts Dream Selsey, added: “It can sometimes be difficult to secure funding for smaller projects which are wholly focused on a small community.

"We are so pleased that the Ferry Farm grant fund can now make a real difference to local people through local projects.”

THe second phase of funding is now open to applications, and closes on THursday, November 30.

Care home organises fun day for all to mark author Roald Dahl's birthday RESIDENTS and staff at a care home have celebrated the 101st birthday of legendary children's author Roald Dahl.

Marriott House and Lodge in Chichester celebrated the author's birthday on Roald Dahl Day. In remembrance of his life, the home hosted a number of activities in the hope that everyone could feel a little bit of Roald Dahl magic, including staff dressing up as their favourite Roald Dahl Day characters. THere was also a film showing of ‘James and the Giant Peach’.

Roald Dahl’s works encompassed novels,

short stories, poetry and screen writing, and are noted for their inventive and playful use of language. His most famous works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, THe BFG and Matilda and, collectively, his books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide.

Marie Forrester, general manager at Marriott House and Lodge, said: “I grew up reading Roald Dahl’s books, and I know that his stories are also close to the hearts of many people in this home. We had a lot of fun celebrating his 101st birthday."

` Learning about dementia day CHICHESTER residents can learn more about dementia and the services available to them at a special Dementia Awareness Day at the city’s library, thanks to Alzheimer’s Society and West Sussex Library Service.

A wealth of information will be on offer on the day on Monday, October 2, between 10am to 2pm.

THere will be representatives from organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Carers Support West Sussex, Coastal West Sussex Mind, Crossroads, Dementia Support and Chichester Dementia Action Alliance attending.

Elisa Vaughan, Alzheimer’s Society operations manager for Sussex, said: “THis event at Chichester Library promises to provide loads of information on what dementia is, how it affects people and the services that are available locally.

With 2,336 people living with dementia in Chichester, it is vital that more people are aware of the services and support available to them, including Chichester Carers Support Group.”

West Sussex Library Service will be showing resources that can help, including their Reminiscence Collection of books and packs on different themes, such as the 1960s, Baking Day and the Second World War. THe packs include objects that help stimulate memories, CDs and replicas of items.

COMMUNITY groups gave their steer to councillors at the latest Build A Better A27 Community and Business Workshop.

THey were asked to express a preference for West Sussex county councillors and Chichester district councillors to consider.

THe workshop considered two options.

One approach would have been to draw on the work the community had done together on the requirements for the A27 and to explore what improvements would need to be put in place to make one of those options acceptable to the community as a whole and to put this forward to

THe second option was to submit a proposal for improvement to the A27 at Chichester as part of RIS2.

Highways England has said that would mean any new scheme for Chichester could be scheduled for start in 2023, as opposed to the current date of 2020.

THe workshop heard that while this investment was not guaranteed, Highways England would work to support it.

Almost 5,000 people took part in a public consultation carried out last year by Highways England which gave five options for development. Of those, almost half (47 per cent), rejected all five options on offer.

"If we are not confident that we are about to use a significant amount of taxpayers' money on something so valuable then we shouldn't spend it.

"THe choice before us has been described as being between a surer and faster option and a riskier and slower option but I don't think it's that clear cut.

"Over the last year, we have already been thoroughly messed around by the Transport Secretary. If the government doesn't get its act together, there's no guarantee funding for RIS projects won't be cancelled anyway.

"If additional time is used sensibly to work on a better scheme with Highways England and to build public support for it, the case for investment in a better A27 will remain a very strong one."

Speaking afterwards, Sarah Sharp, the only elected Green Party representative in the district, said: "I think we have turned a corner today in Chichester with this change of heart at the district council.

"Only a few months ago, these same councillors were jumping on the option 2 bandwagon and now they have realised that community cohesion and working together is more important.

"We have an increasing recognition that we will need to work on a fully integrated transport plan. We need bold initiatives we can back and get behind as a community."

Postman delivers first class tattoos in Witterings studio

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A POSTMAN has set up his own tattoo business in an inspired career change.

Husband and wife, Darren and Lisa Tavares, both 50, set up the studio, Papa D Tattoos.

It came following a lot of persuasion from Lisa.

THe couple, who originally met at primary school, were reunited in 2011 after getting back in touch on Facebook.

At the time, Darren was living in Gibraltar, where he moved to when he was 12 and after a three-week visit to the UK, he returned with little more than a suitcase full of belongings and the couple were married two years later.

"I always knew Darren was really good at art," explained Lisa. "I went online and got him a tattoo kit to practice with.

"He is so laid back that I just kept on at him not to waste his talent. I want everything yesterday so I just kept telling him to do it until he booked in to do the course."

Darren said his love of art extended back to school, where his parents were told by teachers that he could easily go to university to do an art degree.

"I was too busy thinking about money, so I left school at 15.

"I've done all sorts of jobs really, from an international footballer for Gibraltar, working on building sites and being in the

army. None has really felt right though.

"When I moved back to the UK I desperately needed a job and applied at the Post Office and got the job."

Despite being a postman in Chichester for over five years, Darren said he'd never felt like it was still the right job for him.

Supported by Lisa, Darren began learning the art of tattooing with Russell at Rusty Nails in Bognor, as well as practicing on fake skin and himself in his spare time.

Once he was qualified, he started

tattooing people after his post round in the afternoons.

"It's very different doing my art on skin rather than paper.

"Every day tattooing changes, you never stop learning. We go to all the latest conventions to keep up to date on what's new and trending and make sure we are able to cater for everyone."

Now, the husband and wife team have opened up a shop in East Wittering and the business is starting to build.

"Eventually, I will give up my postman job as I get busier at the tattoo studio. I feel like I've found the right job now.

"It's such a buzz doing tattoos, it doesn't even feel like a job. I can't describe the feeling I have knowing there are people out there with my art work on their skin, effectively, forever.

"I just wish I had done this years ago."

Praise for city primary school

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE good quality of leadership and early years teaching at Kingsham Primary School has been applauded by Ofsted following an inspection.

THe report recognised the considerable progress the school has made since it was first sponsored by the University of Chichester Academy Trust in September, 2014.

Inspectors rated the school as ‘requires improvement’ with many good features and commented on the committed staff and effectiveness of the extensive training and support provided by the Academy Trust.

Ofsted also commended the leadership in the school, located at Hay Road in Chichester, and made specific mention of headteacher Hilary Faulkner, who joined in September last year.

THe report added that leaders know their school well and their determined actions, supported well by the trust, are securing improvements in the school.

It was particularly positive about early years teaching, stating that children achieve well by the end of the early years foundation stage.

Kingsham Primary is part of a multiacademy trust sponsored by the University of Chichester.

It is a group of 12 schools in the south coast region which utilise the experience of teachers and academics at the higher education institution to help the children’s development.

Inspectors at the visit noted that pupils achieve increasingly well across key stage one and recognised that all Year 2 students have met expected standards, which was not the case before Kingsham became an academy.

Mrs Faulkner said: “I am delighted that the inspectors identified the many strengths at Kingsham and the commitment of my staff to ensure that the school continues on its journey to excellence.”

THe success of the University of Chichester Academy Trust in improving schools has also been recognised

by Ofsted in the review of the trust’s work which was also carried out in the summer term.

Funding for crime victims

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk SUSSEX Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has made funding available for projects that specifically support vulnerable victims of crime, particularly hate crime.

For the first time, grants of up to £20,000 are available from the Victims’ Services Fund for initiatives which aim to help victims of hate crime, including race, religion, gender identity, sexuality, disability, age, and those who have been targeted persistently.

Mrs Bourne said: “One of the four priorities in my Police and Crime Plan is to protect our vulnerable and help victims cope and recover from crime and abuse.

“After members of my team held several workshops with local charities and organisations, we have decided to open a funding tranche specifically aimed at supporting vulnerable victims.

“My office is in the early stages of looking at a new hate crime support service in the future for people who might not fit the categories that currently exist.

"THis is a highly complex area which is why I am working with more than a dozen different agencies to develop a better

service.

“It’s important that the support available for victims is shaped around people, not around crime type, and we hope that the new service will reflect that.”

Applications for funding from the Victims’ Services Fund will be assessed on ability for victims and survivors of hate crime and/or persistent targeting to cope and recover from crime.

PropertyNews THE average asking price of the 360 properties currently marketed for sale in Chichester is £351,253, according to home.co.uk.

THat may seem high compared to the UK average, but it’s actually 15 per cent lower than a year ago.

Back then, the average property in Chichester was marketed for sale at £415,183.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t actually been a sharp drop in the sold prices that would help to pave the way for a new era of first-time buyers. In fact, property prices in Chichester are up 4.5 per cent compared to a year ago, according to the Land Registry.

Instead, it is the size and type of property that is available on the market that has changed i.e. there are more smaller and cheaper properties currently on the market, thus lowering the average figure.

THis is evident in that 49 per cent of the properties currently for sale have one or two bedrooms, compared to just 38 per cent a year ago. A lot of this has been brought about by an influx of flats, with 33 per cent more apartments available than a year ago.

It seems, therefore, first-time buyers looking at starter homes have more to choose from than 12 months ago. Unfortunately, it is this end of the market that has seen the greatest increase in asking prices; the two bedroom properties are 10 per cent more expensive than a year ago and the one bedroom properties are 20 per cent more expensive!

Here’s a final thought on the matter though; were you pleased to see that alarming title or somewhat shocked? Because it seems to me that when house prices are rising (as we’ve seen during the past few years) the media says what a travesty this is and that something needs to be done to lower them. Fortnight of chocolate heaven

THe Emsworth event is part of British Food Fortnight - the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink.

Montezuma's will be actively participating in activities throughout the two-week event, which started on Saturday and runs until Sunday, October 8.

During the event, Montezuma's are involved in a number of activities. THe company's chocolate bus is handing out tastings of Montezuma's chocolates and truffles in and around Emsworth.

Montezuma's truffles will round off the Great British Menu College lunches at the Brookfield Hotel as well as feature at Fat Olives in their Sparkling South Downs Adventure and the Community Seafood Lunch.

THe Montezuma's team will also be at the remaining following events: Tomorrow's Hampshire Farmers Market, St Peter's Square.

Slow growing, easy to maintain, with a maximum height of around 8m. with a palette of vibrant yellows, oranges and reds to choose from.

SWEET GUM: Also known as (Liquidambar styraciflua) this is a popular autumn trees in the UK. It delivers a spectacular display of shiny vibrant red and burgundy star-like foliage.

School yard conker fights may not be politically correct but that doesn’t stop playing at home. The first recorded game of conkers took place in 1848 on the Isle of Wight.

Conkers used to be ground up and fed to horses to relieve them of coughs, and this could be the origin of the tree’s name.

Choir on song at plan debate HOUSING campaigners were singing in the rain at their latest protest against new homes in Pagham and North Bersted.

Some 40 members of Pagham and Aldwick Green Fields Movement (Pagam) and Bersted & Aldwick Development Destroying Environment and Agricultural Land (Bad Deal) joined together for a modified version of Jerusalem to regale visitors to the inquiry into allocating land for new homes.

William Blake’s famous words were changed to include: ‘And did those rogues in modern times seek to destroy our fields of green, ‘And was the hand of Arun DC on England’s pleasant pastures seen?

‘We will not sleep from mental fight, Nor will our might sleep in our hand ‘Till we have served Bersted and Pagham, ‘In England’s green and pleasant land’.

THe wet conditions early on Monday morning failed to deter the campaigning choir as they staged their tuneful protest outside the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton.

Among the singers was Nicola Dedman, of Pagham Road, pictured on the front page. She said: “We can’t get out of our property now because of the flow of traffic, especially when Church Farm Holiday Village is open.

“THat brings a lot of money into the village and we accept that. But there is going to be hundreds and hundreds of cars from these new houses.

“THere are two bottlenecks along

Pagham Road and you are giving way all the time. THere are a lot of elderly people in Pagham, many in mobility scooters, and they are not going to be able to cope with crossing the road to the village hall.

“I live opposite one of the development sites and it’s Class A agricultural land.

I researched all that information about the crops before I moved there with my husband two years ago.”

Fellow singer Gill Witt, of Leonora Drive, said: “Pagham is a lovely place. We may need more houses but there are too many being proposed and in the wrong place. THe roads can’t cope with the extra traffic. THere’s a queue now all the way to the A27 and a queue along the A27.”

Pagham Road resident Chris Crutch said: “I am worried about the flooding and the traffic if the housing gets built.”

About 3,700 homes are envisaged for three sites in Pagham and one in North Bersted. THe developers stated at the enquiry into Arun District Council's land use the modifications they proposed to the roads would enable the extra traffic to be absorbed.

A statement from one of the companies, Hallam Land Management, said: "None of the mitigation measures identified are prohibitive. All parties are committed to facilitating the timely delivery of all relevant transport infrastructure improvements."

Wednesday's session of the hearing heard comments for and against Arun's plans for 3,000 homes at Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate.

GIANT pumpkins are again being sought by Bognor Regis in Bloom organisers.

THe working group members want to find the heaviest of the vegetables in the town as part of this year's Rox Hallowe'en Extravaganza.

THis follows the success of the first competition last year.

THe free contest is open to groups, individuals, children under 11 at the end of October, schools and businesses in the area.

THe biggest entry in each category will win a prize. Pumpkins should be taken along to Hotham Park at 1.30pm on October 28 ready for judging at 2pm. Prize-giving will take place soon after.

Hub is set to arrive at station next year TOP designer Wayne Hemingway has spoken of his excitement at bringing new life to Bognor Regis railway station.

Mr Hemingway's design company is helping to create a brand for the creative start-up business hub being designed for empty rooms at the station.

"It's a beautiful building. THese are waiting rooms which have been waiting for a new use for a long time," he said at the Turning the Tide conference.

"THe interest around that hub and the uptake is phenomenal. It's going to be cool and interesting and fabulous for Bognor Regis."

THe rooms are set to handed over to the project next January and the scheme is due to open in June, 2018.

West Sussex County Council has played a leading role in the scheme.

Its leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, said: "I am delighted Wayne has got involved because it has given a real lift to Bognor Regis.

"THe county council is committed to Bognor Regis because we want to see it thrive. It has got so much to offer.

"We are putting the maximum efffort into the hub at the moment.

We will be working on that until next summer.

"THen we will be looking at the next project we can do in the town.

I support Bognor Regis and I will help it whenever I can."

“I want the local community to support this business as much as they need my business to support them. Butlin’s can’t be successful without a successful and happy Bognor Regis,” he said.

As reported, the holiday resort is booming on the back of some £76m of investment. Much of the money created three hotels. A fourth is envisaged. But

the immediate investment – which has reached £40m – is going on a swimming centre set to open in early 2019.

Work is well underway on the Splash Waterworld – and Mr Pardey said it was going to be stunning. “THis will be a pool that people will have never seen before. THe changing rooms have been designed for the 21st century with the help of the Mumsnet website,” he said. Mr Pardey was one of six speakers at the Turning THe Tide regeneration conference held at Butlin’s by Arun District Council.

THis brought together some 150 investors, business representatives and councillors last Friday to hear an overview about the progress being made to make the town fit for a king.

Arun chief executive Nigel Lynn spoke about the £280m-plus of investment made in Bognor Regis in the past decade.

THat investment would continue with

5,500 planned new homes, an improved A29 and the ambitious Gardens by the Sea project for the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites.

“Never again, do we want to hear that it’s ‘just’ Bognor Regis,” he said. “We need to make sure we talk Bognor Regis up and say how good things are.”

Andrew Ball, the head of corporate relations at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, told about the vital role its technology and logistics centre at Oldlands Farm played in producing its attention-grabbing cars.

“Bognor Regis is an absolutely crucial part in our process. It consolidated three existing operations.

“Every part that makes up a Rolls Royce comes through that centre and it is the distribution centre for inbound bodies and the vast majority of finished cars are prepared and distributed from Bognor Regis,” he said.

THe company’s success had seen an extra 10,000sq m being added to the site to take its total footprint to 40,000sq m to equal the size of its HQ at Goodwood.

Makeover for leisure centre THE refurbished Arun Leisure Centre at Felpham has been unveiled.

THe completion of the £1.3m investment project was officially recognised last week.

Freedom Leisure, which operates the centre on behalf of Arun District Council, carried out the refurbishment as part of their commitment to provide excellent leisure facilities for the community.

THe work has seen the remodelling of the foyer with the introduction of a modern hub-style reception, which has increased seating capacity, and a café which will serve Costa coffee and a range of grab-and-go products.

THe first-floor fitness gym has benefited from new larger changing

facilities and energy conservation work has seen the installation of new innovative air handling and water treatment solutions, with energyefficient lighting throughout the centre.

Freedom Leisure has marked the occasion by launching a ‘half price coffee’ deal for all customers aged 75 years or older to complement the free swimming for this age group which was introduced last year.

Cllr Mike Clayden, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “THe refurbishment work is fantastic and has provided the community with a modern, fit-for-purpose leisure centre.

THe half-price coffee deal is a great way to help combat social isolation and the

Mini rugby stars helped by police ITEMS seized from crooks will help young rugby players in Bognor Regis.

Sussex Police have donated £500 to the minis and juniors section of the town's rugby football club based in Hampshire Avenue.

THe money is being put towards new first aid kits, new rugby balls, tackle bags and a Shadowman tackle dummy.

THe cash has come from the Police Property Act Fund.

THis is made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of a court and then sold.

Down to earth wines from Down Under will leave you feeling good Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

ESSENTIALLY Waitrose is my wine destination this week with the focus on discounted offers of up to 25 per cent reductions in price available until early October, according to Rob, the wine man at the Chichester branch.

My initial selection reflected my desire to try another organic wine and the lure of the Yalumba name which is synonymous with quality of product.

THe 2016 Yalumba organic Viognier from South Australia, on offer at just £7.49, is a lighter unoaked style of Viognier which oozes honeysuckle and fennel flavours with a hint of apricot and regales the palate! Clean and very fragrant, this wine from Australia's best Viognier producer restores my faith in this grape variety as bad Viognier is virtually undrinkable.

THis wine partners food well and is arguably the white wine choice for people who prefer red! Yalumba, which incidentally is Aboriginal meaning 'all the land around', is Australia's oldest familyowned winery founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, an English brewer, based in the Eden Valley and now producing organic wine of undoubted refreshing quality.

THe next bottle to catch my eye was a very understated, but elegant label on a 2017 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from the Villa Maria estate in partnership with Waitrose, a venture which has succeeded in producing a classic style of Sauvignon Blanc which is reminiscent of French wines from the Loire Valley.

THis wine exudes crisp gooseberry fruit, is decidedly clean and fresh on the palate, finely balanced with zesty citrus and stony minerality on the finish - a veritable delight at an offer price of £7.79 and thus an absolute no-brainer vis-à-vis value for money!

My third selection in terms of vin blanc was a 2015 Pinot Gris Réserve Cave De Beblenheim on offer at £7.99 from a highly regarded producer (hence my selection thereof) proving to be wonderfully aromatic with complex layered flavours of pears and honey, although not as dry as the notes on the bottle suggest, but nonetheless a fine accompaniment to smoked ham or most Asian dishes or even as a possible dessert wine!

THe delicate musky aroma adds to its charm and is well worth a try, especially at this price. I then could not resist a Cuvée Royale Brut Crémant De Limoux

on offer at £8.99, a blend of chardonnay, chenin blanc and pinot noir with freshlybaked biscuit on the nose, cleanliness on the palate with hints of creamy vanilla, pear and apple flavours to the fore and basically dry, bubbly and refreshing - an ideal apéritif and a good alternative to Prosecco !

I next turned my attention to red wines with a major focus on Italian wines and commencing with the 2015 Terre di Faiano Organic Primitivo wine which, at an offer price of £7.49, proved to have a strong nose with generous black fruit to the fore, namely ripe plums and blackcurrants with

INGREDIENTS For the spaghetti Bolognese sauce: • 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped • 1tbsp olive oil • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 500g lean minced beef • 90g mushrooms, sliced • 1tsp dried oregano or mixed herbs • 400g can tomatoes or chopped tomatoes • 300ml hot beef stock • 1tbsp tomato ketchup or purée • 1tbsp Worcestershire sauce • salt and ground black pepper To serve: • 350g spaghetti • freshly grated Parmesan

a helping of sweet spice, cloves and vanilla and therefore an ideal accompaniment to a rich stew and a powerful wine to merit your utmost consideration!

For an outlay of £9.99, the Villa Carfaggio 2014 Chianti Classico proved to have a good nose, ripe blackberry, plum and raspberry flavours with spice from new oak combining to form a good example of this medium-bodied wine. My final Italian selection was that of a muchreduced 2013 Cantina Terre Del Barolo down from £20.99 to a mere £13.99 and the 2013 vintage has violet, tobacco and porcini aromas and red berry splendour and is worthy of your consideration - one to decant, however, before serving!

1. Put the onion and oil in a large pan and fry over a fairly high heat for 3-4 mins. Add the garlic and mince and fry until they both brown. Add the mushrooms and herbs, and cook for another couple of mins.

2. Stir in the tomatoes, beef stock, tomato ketchup or purée, Worcestershire sauce and seasoning.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30 mins.

3. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pan of boiling, salted water, according to packet instructions. Drain well, run hot water through it, put it back in the pan and add a dash of olive oil, if you like, then stir in the meat sauce. Serve in hot bowls and hand round Parmesan cheese, for sprinkling on top.

Natural remedies to help to live well with Addison's ADDISON’S DISEASE is a rare, hormone-related disease that affects your body’s ability to create and release cortisol and other adrenal hormones.

It is also known as chronic adrenal deficiency, hypocorticolism, and hypoadrenalism.

Some of the most common symptoms of Addison’s disease are as follows: fatigue, exhaustion, and weakness,light-headedness when standing, nausea, vomiting, headaches, sweating and fever joint and muscle pain/weakness, anxiety changes in mood, or personality shifts.

If diagnosed properly, it can be managed, but many people do not recognise the symptoms until it is too

late and the body has already been damaged in a serious way.

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which will cover the start of a new era for its work.

THE completion of the first floor concrete slab of the new Quarry Building at the Aldingbourne Community Centre has enabled the team to forge ahead with the reinforced concrete walls and columns for the second floor support structure.

Decking out for the second floor concrete slab is now well underway with the slab itself cast during the week commencing August 14.

Work on the steel frame started a week later and means things are really taking shape at Aldingbourne! A collage of the work is pictured below.

On their recent trip the trust's Blogging Team paid a visit to the country centre’s wood projects – Wood Recycling and Woodpeckers.

THe Wood Recycling team work closely with National Wood, which helps them source materials from building sites and other businesses where timber can be reclaimed.

THe timber is then sorted, cut, stacked and made available for sale to the public. Wood that is not put up for sale is used by the Woodpeckers team to make amazing craft gifts and furniture, pictured bottom, for sale in the Aldingbourne shop and their newest Enterprise, MAKE @ Aldingbourne based in Fratton,

Portsmouth.

THe team can take commissions to make tables, chairs and many other items. Led by Darren, the Woodpeckers team of supported adults learn genuine wood-working skills, numerous life skills, and of course expend physical energy!

Any remaining waste wood that has been collected is still used as it is sent to the ever-hungry biomass boiler! THe boiler produces all the heat and hot water for our main building, workshops and our Rugwash Enterprise.

THe boiler has dramatically reduced our fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development.

We would like to thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding while the building of this this exciting new development is in process.

A CIRCLE of local pianists will be giving the next concert at Bognor Regis Music Club.

THe Pallant Piano Group join together to play to each other and are mentored by Terry Allbright, a performer, composer and tutor at the University of Chichester.

THe concert takes place at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road, pictured above.

Music club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are delighted to welcome members of the Pallant Piano Group, who are bringing a varied programme of pieces they have been preparing in recent months.

"Terry Allbright was a Cambridge Open Scholar and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the group benefits enormously from his expert tuition."

THe piano group was formed by the late Steven Norris and Terry Allbright some five years ago. It originally met at Steven's house in South Pallant to give rise to its name.

Many different composers will be represented. Among them will be Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Listz, Schumann, Grieg and Arthur Benjamin.

Jack Adams will play one of his own compositions, Mockingbird Fugue, and Diana Bollom will sing Henri Duparc's Chanson Triste.

Entry at the door for the concert is £6 members, £8 for visitors and £4 for students.

THe two main characters of Elisabeth Hewetson's story admire the work of the Friends of Bognor Regis Pier and recognise the widespread endeavour and commitment required to maintain the pier.

Ruth and Mark's story in The Stealing ends during a major fundraising festival organised by the Friends on a night of stormy weather.

THe couple spend time in Angmering and visit the pier at particularly significant points in the novel. It is set in the late 1990s and early years of this century.

Elisabeth said: "THe characters admire those who put so much effort, commitment and sheer hard graft into trying to maintain the pier and other piers around the country."

The Stealing was published by Mirador Publishing as a paperback and ebook in the summer under her pen name of Elisabeth Clare.

She made this decision to distinguish the work from the publications associated with her day job as a lecturer at the University of East Anglia. She teaches health care students, both undergraduates and post-graduate.

Elisabeth's inspiration for Bognor Regis Pier comes from her childhood visits to the town.

"Although I now live in Norfolk, I was taken on holiday every year to Bognor Regis or Felpham as a young child and have very many happy memories of these holidays," she said.

A mother of two sons aged 20 and 23, Elisabeth - pictured below - said she had begun to receive royalties from the initial sales of her book both in this country and the USA. "For me, like many authors I think, it is more about telling the story than any expectation of making serious money from my writing," she said.

The Stealing has been described by her publisher as following Ruth's journey from darkness to light through her redemptive, healing love for her son, Matthew, her husband, Mark, and her step-daughter, Emmie.

"Shattering of childhood innocence pervades the narrative," a spokesman states. "It is about knowledge - what was known, when and how, what knowledge is knowable when and how, what knowledge should be knowable when and how.

"Tension builds, will Ruth's past catch up with her?"

CHARITIES and community groups around Bognor Regis and Chichester are missing out on thousands of pounds.

THe Community Initiative Fund from West Sussex County Council provides grants targeted at supporting communities to deliver local projects in their area.

THe scheme is aimed at encouraging residents to be active, connect with each other and develop, learn and give back to their local community.

THe five county local committees - with three for Arun and Chichester - have a significant amount of funding still available.

THe awards range from £1,000 to £5,000. Last year, saw a total of £371,019 awarded to good causes across West Sussex.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's member for safer, stronger communities, said: "We have had some great projects in the past which we have been able to support through community initative funding.

"We have some very deserving community groups in our county so would encourage people to come forward and make the most of the opportunity.

"THere are also two other funding schemes available which people can find more out about via our website."

THe deadline for applications to the next Joint Western Arun Area Committee is October 14 for its meeting on November 1.

THe South Chichester committee meets on October 31 and the North Chichester committee on November 14.

The labour punishments of Petworth House

By Elizabeth Byles, placement student at The Novium Museum PETWORTH PRISON, also known as Petworth Gaol or Petworth House of Correction, was designed by the Neo-Gothic architect James Wyatt and was built in 1788.

It was infamous in its time due to its hard labour punishments and the strict, unforgiving conditions implemented there.

One of its forms of punishment was a machine called the ‘tread wheel’. THe tread wheel was a large, step-covered wheel that rotated 48 steps per minute.

Prisoners were required to climb 11,340 feet each day for six days a week, the equivalent of climbing Big Ben roughly 35 times each day, a brutal expectation.

Prisoners were allocated 10 hours in the summer and seven hours in the winter in which to complete this. As there was nothing on the contraption to hold on to, apart from a rotating hand wheel, many would stumble and fall, often this would severely injure them.

Notably, a 16-year-old named THomas

Allard was sent to Petworth Prison for four months in 1849 for being an ‘orphaned vagrant’ and died after he was mangled by the tread wheel. Due to incidences like these, the wheel was outlawed in 1898.

Although only men were expected to use the tread wheel, both men and women were given the second hard labour device of the prison, the ‘crank’. THe crank involved prisoners turning a handle against resistance 13,200 times a day.

At Petworth these devices were useless for anything but punishment, so much so that people often referred to spending time on them as ‘grinding the wind’, however, in some prisons they were used to pump water or grind grain into flour so that the prison could sell the produce and cover the cost of the prisoners.

other or anybody else.

Speech was only permitted in response to questions from prison officials - even the guards had to wear soft shoes to maintain the atmosphere.

THis system was criticised in 1922 as it was linked to the numerous cases of insanity in prisons. John Mance became the prison governor in 1826 and was a strongly religious man who viewed preventing re-offense as God’s work and his duty. He once proudly announced the following: "I now have a notorious vagrant in my custody who declared to me that he would rather go three months in Lewes [prison] than one in this house, and he assures me to my great satisfaction that he will never come into this division of the county again."

THe prison mainly held petty criminals, with homelessness, or vagrancy, as its most common crime. Mance designed the ergometer used in Petworth Prison to measure the work prisoners did on the wheel, accurately measuring how far they climbed each day to ensure that they completed their work and to prevent them from being

over-punished. THis was so successful that it quickly spread to other prisons in the area.

Like many Victorian prisons, following the Prisons Act of 1865 and the promises of Sir Edmund du Cane, the then assistant director of prisons, the hard labour was accompanied by ‘Hard Fare and Hard Board’. THis meant that prisoners received a monotonous diet of the same food, on the same day, every week and that their hammocks were replaced with wooden board beds.

Petworth Prison closed in 1878 and was demolished in 1881. A number of bricks with names, initials and dates etched into them, by prisoners in the solitary confinement cells, were later used to build a wall near the old magistrate’s court. THis wall is the only remaining trace in Petworth of this significant part of the town’s history, and while it was feared in 2008 that the wall would either be obscured from public view, inside a private garden, or destroyed altogether, it is still accessible to the public despite renovation plans for buildings nearby.

Fundraiser – The Phoenix Snak Shak Ltd The Phoenix Snak Shak provides somewhere casual for the young people in the Manhood peninsula area to meet with their friends. High-flying Bognor march into Pompey for battle with Forces BOGNOR RFC's impressive start to the season will be put to the test as they take on a unbeaten United Services Portsmouth side this weekend.

Under the direction of club stalwart Doug Millen, the Hampshire Avenue side have put in a series of good showings to kickstart their Hampshire One campaign.

THat was continued on Saturday with a 26-0 demolition of Sundown & Shanklin in front of a decent home crowd.

THe victory was the second out of three so far for Millen's men, a win that took them into the top three of a competitive division.

Bognor will need to step up their game though, when they make the trip down the coast tomorrow (3pm) to play the unbeaten US team, who have won all three of their matches so far.

THey prepared for the game against the Pompey rivals in the best way possible with a convincing performance against the visitors from the Isle of Wight.

After a less than convincing start where S&S tested the Bognor defence, the home side showed their class in convincing style.

Slick hands from Billy Toone, Darren Bidwell

and David Sweeney allowed Jack Hornibrook to run straight into the heart of the opponents' 22 before offloading to captain Shane Stevens who finished over the white wash. With the conversion from Sweeney, it was 7-0 to the home side.

Minutes later, Bognor's strong running paid dividends again, sucking the away side's defence into the middle of the park.

THis allowed Sweeney to thrust an excellent cross-field kick into Stevens' arms, for him to dot down for his second try. THat made it 12-0 at half time.

THe second half would follow the same storyline as the first, Bognor dominating in all aspects of the game. One attack freed young winger Paddy Burnett to score again in just his second Bognor appearance. THe conversion was made to send the score up to 19-0.

And, as time ticked down, a quick ball was spun out to outside Joshua Burgess to send him under the posts and Bognor to cloud nine and seal the 26-0 win.

An injury late on to Sam Newcombe dampened spirits slightly, although there are hopes he will be back in a hoops jersey in the near future.

CHICHESTER RFC's winning start to life back in London One South rolls on as the Blues look to make it five from five this weekend.

Scott Ashley's Blues host ninth-place Cobham tomorrow at Oaklands Park (3pm) full of confidence, having seen off a number of tough opponents in their 100 per cent start of the campaign.

Chi continued that successful beginning to their campaign with an impressive 20-10 victory on the road against top-of-the-table CS Sports last weekend.

THe win, which leaves them second level on points with Medway, was even more impressive given seven players were unavailable and traffic meant the squad arrived late at their west London destination.

Club spokesman Roger Gould said: "Bearing in mind their selection problems, this victory ranks as one of Chichester's best ever performances away from home.

"THey deserved the four points after an enthralling end to end game against strong

opponents at the top of the league.

"With the score at half time 10-8 to CS Rugby, Chi once again fought back with their pack steadily gaining ascendancy. THeir determination and team spirit prevailed."

Given the issues in reaching CS Sports, the match was delayed by 15 minutes. Simon Pinhorne and Aussie recruit Adrian Lynch made debuts, while Tim Cook, aged 37, took the right wing berth.

After falling behind to an early penalty, a Richard Adams drop goal levelled the score at 3-3. THe hosts then scored a converted try but Chi replied before the break. A clean lineout and drive maul allowed Aaron Davies to touch down. THe conversion missed was missed to make it 10-8 at half-time.

After the re-start, the Blues forwards took charge. A big push at the scrum saw Chris Johnson combine with Jack Bentall to touch down. Johnson scored again with five minutes to go to seal the victory and four points for the Blues.

CHESS: Chichester Chess Club, which plays at THe Fishbourne Centre in Blackboy Lane, has enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in its lengthy history.

THe club moved to the venue in 2012 and has enjoyed the venue ever since, with visiting teams commenting favourably on the playing room and social facilities.

Playing on the extreme eastern edge of the Portsmouth and District Chess League (PDCL), and with support from kindred club Bognor and Arun, the club has won all three divisions in this league.

Long-standing chess players believe this is the first time in the 70-year-history of the PDCL this has happened. Across the entire season, the club lost only five of 26 matches played across the three divisions.

Club chairman Steve Smith said: “It’s a wonderful achievement by everyone and a tribute to the tireless work undertaken by the match captains, Specific thanks to Bill McDougall, Mick Plumb and Mike Spence. Our team was narrowly beaten in the final of the Cole Plate – effectively the FA Cup of the local chess scene. THis was a good effort, well steered by Jaimie Wilson."

Several individuals with the club have also enjoyed success for the club as well as its teams.

Steve Smith and Chichester veteran Alex Miller shared the honours for the Ruth Rose Cup for those aged over 60 and Ed Farrington won the Wilf Pratten Cup with the highest individual percentage score in Division 1.

Young Lions find their ruthless streak with back-to-back wins

Chi sprint to the finish line CHICHESTER Athletics Club’s under 15s rounded off the season, making it a hat trick of county runners-up titles.

After a battling campaign which has seen the young squad travel across the region competing, the final event took place at the Withdean Stadium in Brighton.

Going in to the meet, the home town club were favourites to win the crown.

But, after a day of fierce competition, it was Crawley who took the honours with Chichester rising from third to take the runners-up spot for the third year running.

All 22 members of the Chi squad in both the A and B teams proved their worth in the three hour event.

It was Ollie Beach who notched up Chichester’s only A string win in the whole match with a fine discus effort of nearly 30 metres.

With Dylan Giles finishing second in the B string, the event marked the club’s best total of 19 out of a maximum 20 points.

THe sprints were no less competitive with both Jacob Piper and Ollie Sanderson able to give a good account of themselves against some

nationally ranked opposition.

Ollie then formed a good pairing with Zack Entiknapp in the hurdles while new member Niall Mears produced a fine run in the 800 metres to gain a well-deserved second place in the B string in his first ever race for the club.

As in the boys’ match, it was good teamwork from the girls which enabled Chichester to finish the match as high as it did. Once again, it was the throws which provided the best haul of points.

Millie Grant was a fine third in the A string for the shot which enabled Holly Trinder to win the B string with both athletes over seven metres and 18 points towards the club’s overall total.

Holly was then joined by Freya Chandler for a third and second respectively in the discus while Freya was a good 3rd in the javelin with over 25 metres.

Battling performances from the four relay teams in the 4 x 100 metres and 4 x 300 metres kept the margin to Brighton at just over 10 points to give Chichester the place and crucially move the club into second position on the alltime club rankings.

PAGHAM head into a double header hoping a successful week can kickstart their campaign.

THe Lions have struggled to find consistency this term, sitting in mid table of the SCFL Premier, winning four and losing three of the first seven games.

But the joint management team of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds will be hoping their young charges have taken a big step forward after securing two victories in the space of four days.

First up was a victory on penalties over Loxwood in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup. THen, the Lions showed what they are capable of with a 3-1 win over Crawley Down Gatwick in the league.

After an early Daryl Wollers strike was cancelled out, Lloyd Rowlatt and Callum Overton sealed the victory. It could and should have been more.

Next up is a visit from struggling Arundel in the league tomorrow (3pm) before SCFL Division One side Wick make the trip to Nyetimber Lane in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.30pm).

SELSEY'S young guns return to league action with a first win in four in their sights.

THe Blues have been in stellar form in SCFL Division One and remain unbeaten as the season heads into October.

After a blistering start where Steve Bailey's side chalked up six league wins in a row, that 100 per cent start was ended with a 2-2 draw at Seaford Town a fortnight ago.

Two more disappointing results followed - an extra time loss to St Francis Rangers in the RUR Cup and a 1-0 reverse to the higher ranked Wessex Premier side Baffins Milton

Bailey will be hoping his Blues side can get back on track on their return to the league, with Ringmer the visitors to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

THen it is on the road for a long trip to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane to face fellow SCFL Division One side Langney Wanderers on Tuesday in the Sussex Senior Cup (7.45pm).

Elsewhere, Chichester City moved into second in the SCFL Premier after taking four points from six in the past week.

Miles Rutherford's side demolished Worthing United 7-1 last weekend, with Scott Jones and Dave Herbert bagging hattricks.

THen, a battling performance on the road at THree Bridges saw Chi come from behind to seal a 2-2 draw thanks to Ellis Martin and Jones.

THose results have lifted City up the table, albeit after playing more games than the sides around them.

Next up is a trip to local rivals Littlehampton Town tomorrow (3pm) before visiting Haywards Heath Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With striker Jones scoring ten goals in just five games, hopes will be high at Oaklands Park that Chi can bag a decent return from another tough set of away trips.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the league campaign, welcoming leaders Jarvis Brook to the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side drew 0-0 with Cowfold last time out and will be sure to face a tougher task against the Crowboroughbased side who have lost just once in the league so far.

Fellow division two side Bosham host Montpelier Villa tomorrow (3pm), fresh from a 5-2 win at Westfield with Callum Coker scoring a hat-trick.

Chi City Ladies seek to recover from loss CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after suffering their first loss in five games.

Matt Wright's side have shown themselves more than capable of competing at a higher level after securing promotion to the FA Women's Premier League.

But a four match unbeaten run in all competitions was brought to a halt on Sunday when second-placed Lewes condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at Oaklands Park.

Chi, who sit seventh in the 12 team league, now will seek to put that behind them when they visit bottom side Swindon Town on Sunday (2pm).

Wright's team will be hoping to get off to as strong a start as they did last weekend, when

Chloe Tucker put the Green Army in front.

Her effort from a direct free kick flew into the top corner to give Chi a deserved lead.

But they were unable to keep it, conceding just before the break from a sharp Lewes counter attack. THe visitors took the lead on the hour mark, after Chi failed to clear a corner.

Try as they might, they just couldn’t find a way back into the tie and, with Lewes growing in confidence, the visitors held firm to come away with the points in the bag.

Chichester will have to regroup again for the trip to Swindon.

Elsewhere, the development squad lost 2-1 away to Crawley Wasps Reserves. Sophie Phelps scored the Chichester goal.

Rocks out to spoil Sports' cup parade in a bid to find form Next Game

EASTBOURNE BORO (A) Tomorrow, 3PM

BOGNOR are up for the cup - with Rocks officials keen to use a succesful run as a springboard to future league success.

THe Rocks head to Eastbourne Borough tomorrow (3pm) in the third preliminary round of the FA Cup for a game that sees them reunited with former manager Jamie Howell for the second time this term.

Jack Pearce's side do so off the back of two much improved performances - with a 2-1 win over Weston-super-Mare in the last round followed up by a 2-2 draw against Gloucester City last weekend.

Strikes from Ollie Pearce and Jimmy Muitt looked to have given the Nyewood Lane outfit the spoils, until City hit back, bagging the equaliser in added on time.

THat draw leaves the Nyewood lane outfit in 18th in National South, two points and two places above the drop zone with a quarter of the season gone.

But attention now switches to the cup.

And with the Rocks just two victories away from the first round proper, players and officials know that a match-up against same league opponents gives them a chance of progress in the famous competition.

THe £7,500 pay cheque would be a welcome boost to the Nyewood Lane coffers - but it is the bonus of winning games and generating momentum which is the biggest prize on offer.

Manager Jack Pearce said: "We have a team where no one has played at this standard before.

"History shows that when teams of any level go up, unless they strengthen with people who have played at that higher level then they normally finish up with mixed results."

Pearce's side will be up against it as they travel along the coast to face their National South rivals for the first time in the FA Cup. THe Sports have only lost once in their past 11 in all competitions, which includes a narrow 1-0 victory at Nyewood in August.

Bognor will be without James Crane, who suffered a shoulder injury against Gloucester.

THe involvement of frontman Alex Parson is unclear, too, after he dual-signed with Isthmian Premier bottom side Worthing, who are currently ground sharing at Nyewood due to problems with their artificial pitch.

What is certain is that those Rocks players who are available will go into the match fitter than ever.

With most of the team never playing at the National South level before, the squad have been put through their paces in the first three months of the campaign.

THe feeling is that by being fitter than their opponents, they can have the edge when it truly matters in games.

Sadly, against Gloucester City, that did not ring true.

Rocks' injuries mount up again JUST when Rocks fans thought they were over their injury crisis, another blow comes out of nowhere. After a strong start, Bognor were somewhat railroaded when five of their players were left on the treatment table.

After a difficult month which saw the Nyewood Lane side go seven games without a win, the return to full fitness of the squad has co-incided with an upturn in form. THen, midway through the first half at Gloucester City, influential left back James Crane went up for a header and came down awkwardly.

An early assessment after the 2-2 draw is that the club stalwart, who recently notched up his 400th goal for the club, will be out for up to two months. If there is a silver lining, it is that defender Kristian Campbell, who signed on a month's loan from National League side Bromley, settled in well. THat does not ignore the fact that the Rocks squad is a couple of injuries away from being stretched again.

At the start of the campaign, manager Jack Pearce made clear that Bognor's season would rely on whether he could keep his small squad free from injury and free from suspension.

With winter on the way, fans will be hoping for a physio-free few months as the Rocks look to move on from this stormy patch.

THINGS are rarely quiet around Nyewood Lane but the past fortnight has seen another few ups and downs on the Rocks' roller-coaster.

It started with that fans' meeting with manager Jack Pearce where he was open to questioning on a poor run of form that had seen us not win a game for a month.

After that we needed a performance on the pitch.

So it was great to get back to winning a game of football after so long without one!

Beating Weston-SuperMare at Nyewood Lane in the FA Cup really proved what we can do on our day.

It truly was a grandstand finish with James Crane nodding home from the back post right at the end.

After going behind early, it was down to the team to come out in the second half and give it their all and so it showed.

After this we welcomed the Gloucester City side to Nyewood Lane.

Kick off was delayed to 3.20pm as the away coach encountered heavy traffic on the way to the match.

For a change, Bognor took a two-goal lead, starting with Ollie Pearce smacking his shot into the right side of the net. THe goal celebration showed just how much work the boys have been putting in during training to get as fit as possible.

Jimmy Muitt extended Bognor’s lead on 71 minutes and Rocks looked comfortable.

But a deflected free kick swung beyond Dan Lincoln as the visitors pulled a goal back two minutes later.

Super sub Edward Williams netted his second in the game a minute into stoppage time.

It rather felt like a loss after this match.

We did enough to win, creating chances and playing some neat football.

But, again at this level, we

are up against teams that can punish you with clinical finishing.

I am sure the players saw this as two points dropped.

THe new loan signing of Kristian Campbell seemed to be an impressive addition.

He was involved in our first goal and tried his best to link up the play down the left flank.

I’d say in the first half he was involved a lot more, whereas during the second half he appeared to tire slightly.

I have to admit I was puzzled at the loan signing of a defender before the game, but would later appreciate that it allowed the likes of Harvey Whyte and Calvin Davies more freedom on the pitch to create chances.

THere was a negative to come out of the match (aside from the result...)

My columnist colleague James Crane badly dislocated his shoulder in this game and will be out of action for some time.

Tomorrow sees the Rocks travel to Priory Lane to take on Eastbourne Borough in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Perhaps payback is on against our former manager, Jamie Howell?

It would be great to win there. Especially after they managed to snatch a win earlier on in the season 1-0 back at Nyewood Lane.

Knowing Jamie as I do, he will be determined to progress and get another win on home turf.

THey have started to get results in the league and that’s no surprise to me.

I know a lot of fans are making the trip on the Rocks on Tour coach.

You just never know in the FA Cup! I hope to see you all there.
