Red light for A27 extra time

THe rejection for extra time was made after Chichester MP Gillian Keegan held a meeting to ask for an extension over the decision for the future of the A27.

a Better A27 meeting in August, Mrs Keegan announced she would be asking the government for more time for the community to work together to come to an agreed approach for the stretch of road, following the cancellation of the scheme earlier this year.

A meeting was arranged with Jesse Norman MP, Parliamentary UnderSecretary for Transport and Jim O’Sullivan, chief executive of Highways England,

earlier this month.

Mrs Keegan said: "As you know from our recent community meeting, I promised to go back to Government and press for more time for us to develop a scheme for the A27 here in Chichester that we, as a community, could support."

At that meeting, Mr Norman confirmed no extra time could be granted due to the restrictions and regulations around Government’s roads investment strategy

investment programme.

"THis is disappointing news as we hoped, with more time, that we could agree a way forward for the A27 at Chichester that better reflected the view of our community.

We will now be asking the community to consider the two options put forward

by Highways England and agree the next steps. THe need for the community to unite is still key to securing funding."

Vaccinations for meningitis week

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AS MENINGITIS Awareness Week draws to a close, a Bosham mum has urged young people to get a lifesaving vaccine.

Debbie Collino is encouraging young people in Sussex to get vaccinated against a deadly strain of meningitis that is spreading.

Meningitis Awareness Week has been running for the past week and ends on Sunday. Debbie is sharing her family’s first-hand experience of meningitis to encourage all eligible young people to book an appointment to get their free vaccine.

Debbie said: “My son Matt contracted meningococcal meningitis in his second month at Loughborough University in 2010, age 19.

“Matt decided to go and stay with his girlfriend at the time, who was a short train ride away in Nottingham. THat decision saved his life, not to be alone.

"Matt’s symptoms were getting worse and he had very cold hands and feet. His girlfriend took him to casualty but Matt was told he probably had flu.

“Some hours later, Matt’s girlfriend was concerned because he was very hot and was not making sense when speaking and was really sleepy.

"My husband decided to drive to Matt and when he arrived hours later he could see Matt was gravely ill, so he took him back to hospital.

"By this stage Matt was so unwell that he was rushed straight through to the

resuscitation room and the medical teams began their life-saving work. Matt now had a rash appearing. THe doctors stressed he was unlikely to pull through."

Most people aged 14 to 20 are eligible for the vaccine and need to get the vaccine if they haven’t had it already.

University students are at higher risk of meningitis and septicaemia and any freshers up to age 25 not yet vaccinated must get their MenACWY vaccine urgently.

“Matt spent four days in intensive care and a further two weeks in high dependency and neurological wards," added Debbie.

"Initially he couldn’t walk or speak and his eyesight was affected. Intense rehabilitation meant he returned to university later that year and went on to complete his degree eventually.

“My grandfather died of the disease aged 28 and my niece also had it age four. I'm keen to get the message out there and encourage everyone eligible to have the vaccines available to protect themselves and also know the sign and symptoms of meningitis. " Teenagers are a high-risk age group for meningitis and septicaemia and university freshers are particularly at risk because they mix with so many other students, some of whom are unknowingly carrying the bacteria.

Young people up to the age of 20 and university freshers up to 25 are advised to check their eligibility and get the vaccination whether starting university or not.

University academy trust is singled out in Ofsted report THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester Academy Trust has been singled out by Ofsted for its high-quality partnership working which has led to “a rapid improvement” of its schools.

During a visit, lead inspector THeresa Phillips said she was “overcome by positivity,” bucking a trend for criticism of university-led trusts.

Officials commended the high quality of education at its academies, supported by “valuable expertise” drawn from a long tradition of teacher-training at the University and its Institute of Education.

THe review, which took place in July, included inspections of four Trust academies, discussions with the

trustees, headteachers, and governors, and stakeholders, and an examination of its policies and practices.

THe University’s Academy Trust includes 12 schools in the south coast region which work together to ensure faster rates of pupils’ progress across the group.

THe watchdog report recognised that trustees, officers and school leaders shared a strongly-held view that each academy was unique and should develop its own identity to meet the needs of the community it served.

Chichester College raises funds to open Kenya school

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STAFF and students at Chichester College have raised more than £82,000 to build a new school in Kenya.

Over the past two years, they have been working with the African Adventures Foundation to raise money to help provide quality education to thousands of children living in extreme poverty in Nakuru.

THis summer, they saw their goal become a reality as they exceeded their fundraising target and the new Walk Centre Primary School was officially opened infront of a host of local children.

Also present at the opening were 41 visiting volunteers from Chichester College including Lisa Humphries.

Lisa, who is the college’s student experience manager, has been leading the fundraising efforts. She said: “THere’s an incredible sense of achievement to see the school finished and ready to

welcome students from the Hilton slum area of Nakuru.

“When we arrived at the school, I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing.

I kept asking have we really done this?

“I don’t think I stopped crying at the opening, it was very emotional as we’ve worked so hard to get to this point. It’s been a real team effort across the whole college – we’ve held bake sales, jumped out of planes and walked on fire to raise the money to make this happen.

“And it’s going to make a huge difference to the local community in Nakuru.”

THe final fundraising push took place in Africa, coinciding with the opening of the school, when the college’s student experience co-ordinator, Lucy Stanbridge, and sport lecturer Matt Wright joined a five-strong team to cycle across Kenya and Tanzania – covering 1,200 kilometres in just 10 days.

THey set off from Nakuru on Sunday, August 6, and navigated through the southern tip of the famous Rift Valley, around the gravelly foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and along the shores of the Indian Ocean before reaching their destination of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania on Wednesday, August 16– raising more than £10,000 in the process.

Lucy said: “It was a huge challenge – our legs were all feeling it at the end of each day.

“THe conditions were tough, although the terrain was better than we thought it would be.

"But we cycled through scorching heat, heavy rain storms and the wind was against us every day.

“It was really special though – the support we had the whole way was fantastic and even when we were at our most tired, it was easy to keep going as there were constant reminders of why we were doing it.

“THe sights were amazing – it was like a safari the whole way. It was an experience I’ll never forget and to help raise the money needed for the school meant a lot.”

Chichester College’s involvement with

African Adventures goes back several years and since 2011, nearly 300 students and members of staff have travelled to Kenya as volunteers, helping to develop, maintain and teach at the Walk Centre, which provides free education and food to around 450 children.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, chief executive for the Chichester College Group, said: “I am so very proud of the staff and students at Chichester and Brinsbury.

“We always say our aim is to change lives through learning – and the herculean efforts that went into making the Big Build happen epitomises everything we stand for.

“To give children living in conditions we can’t begin to imagine the opportunity to learn, to be educated – something we take for granted here – is absolutely amazing.”

Alex Maina, founder of THe Walk Centre, visited Chichester last year to meet some of the people who have been involved in the ‘Big Build’ project.

Speaking at the time he said: “What has been achieved so far is amazing – it is more than we could have dreamed was

possible.

“Lisa and I talked about what I would like to see happen with the centre, and I told her I’d like permanent classrooms – built of brick, not tin. I’d like to develop the centre into a school to help more children but I didn’t think it would be possible to raise the money.

“But Lisa said ‘we can do that’ and now it’s like a miracle. We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough.”

While the majority of the money has been raised by college staff and students, there has been a community effort to help reach the total with local schools and nurseries holding various activities in support of the foundation.

THe Josh Skinner Memorial Fund, set up in memory of a Chichester College student who passed away in 2005, also supported the college’s fundraising efforts by sponsoring a classroom which was painted by college volunteers – including Josh’s parents – in August to bring the project to a fitting conclusion.

` Higher number of houses needed CHICHESTER District Council have to provide sites for extra homes in the local plan.

THe decision has come after the Government announced a rise in housing numbers.

At the council meeting on Tuesday, Cllr Simon Oakley raised the question over a high number of houses in the area with a threat to the council's local plan.

He said: “Recently, a planning inspectorate approved on appeal a 100-house application at Shopwhyke.

“In the course of that appeal and decision, he discounted quite a large amount of our housing land supply.

“A lot of the sites within that are not coming forward due to land ownership and legal matters outside of the control of this council.

“Last THursday the Government announced proposals to boost the housing supply numbers and indicated a figure of 609 houses for the Chichester district.

“Given that I don’t recall us getting anywhere near 609 and that appeal decision showing that we have little control over delivery, does this represent a significant threat to the Local Plan?"

Diane Shepherd, Chichester District Council's chief executive, responded to the question raised

by Cllr Oakley. She said: “We are well aware that we are not responsible for the delivery of those houses, it is in the hands of the developers, and 609 is a high figure compared to what’s being built previously.

"All indications are, that as the planning authority, you do have to plan for that number, you do have to provide the sites, you have to go through the Local Plan process and you are expected to try and make those sites deliverable with those developers, so I don’t see anything changing with that.

“THey will be hard targets and we have to find more housing numbers than we’ve got at the moment, but it is our responsibility as the planning authority to make sure that we, as far as possible, plan for those houses.”

PropertyNews THERE are an increasing number of lenders willing to grant 90% mortgages to first-time buyers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should jump in without exhausting other possibilities.

Currently, a first-time buyer with a 10% deposit can access a two-year fixed mortgage at a rate of 1.79%.

Whereas having a 15% deposit in place would lower the rate on the same product to just 1.27% (meaning there’s 29% less interest to pay!).

If you’re thinking a 0.5% difference in interest rates is negligible and all the mortgage rates seem low, you’re right. But it can still make a difference in the long-term.

Let’s say you’re thinking of buying a £250,000 house with a 10% deposit.

On a repayment basis, you can expect to pay £931 each month towards the mortgage. But by raising your deposit to 15% those repayments would drop to £827 per month OR if you paid the same £931 a month as you were going to, the mortgage would be paid off three years quicker!

You may think you have little choice; and with the average property in Chichester selling for £377,309, even a 10% deposit will require £37,731.

But if you consider that by borrowing the additional £12,500 to step up to a 15% deposit could save you £104 per month in this scenario, you could actually afford to borrow this sum at 10% (interest only) to be no worse off.

Edinburgh fringe festival sell-out

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER College students wowed audiences at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

THey travelled to Scotland to perform their version of Jason and the Golden Fleece at Greenside at Nicholson Square from Monday, August 21, to Saturday, August 26.

THey used a stunning array of puppets – of all sizes – to help bring to life the classic Greek myth, taking audiences on an epic journey as Jason and his crew of heroes battled giants, harpies and an army of soldiers.

It was the first-time Chichester College students have taken a show to Edinburgh, and they soon found their footing with their audiences growing in size each day until they sold out their final show.

THe Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world's largest arts festival.

THe official Fringe Programme categorises shows into sections for theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

Owen Crawford, who is studying performing arts at the college, played a number of roles in the show, as well as controlling several of the puppets.

He said: “It was such a good opportunity for us – a real eye-opener and it confirmed that this is what I want

to do for a career.

“It was fantastic to sell out our last show, which showed the progress we made over the week – we got a lot of attention when we took the puppets out into the streets to promote the show.”

Leo Boller, a fellow cast member, added: “It was a great experience, not just performing but also being part of a company – working together and living together, much like you would as part of a touring show.

“I really enjoyed it and I would love to perform at the festival again.

"We saw loads of shows – some were really incredible and there was lots to see and learn from.”

Andrew Green, executive principal at Chichester College, spent the week with the students and said: “It was a fantastic experience for our students and they really learnt a lot in a few days!

“It’s one thing to put on performances at college, but another to take a show to the other end of the country and compete against some of the best new shows and I’m extremely proud of the way they rose to the challenge.

“THey were very pro-active, taking regular ‘puppet walks’ during the week to help raise the profile of the show and entice families to come along to the show – and the crowds seemed to react really well to it.

“We had some brilliant feedback from audiences and to sell out the final performance was the icing on the cake.

THey should be really proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Tackling health services at select committee meeting MAKING sure health services are as efficient as possible is on the agenda at a select committee meeting on Friday, September 29.

West Sussex Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee (HASC) will hear from the three clinical commissioning groups (CCG) in the county about how they are making sure that health services are provided most effectively to meet the needs of local people.

Together, and with partners across Sussex, they are currently looking at how services are commissioned to make sure care and support is aligned across the region.

THe committee will also hear an update from South Central Ambulance service about its takeover of the Patient Transport Service contract in Sussex at the meeting at 1pm at County Hall.

Committee chairman Bryan Turner said: “Making sure patients receive the best care is vital and ensuring services are being run as effectively as possible is part of that. It is really important the committee is satisfied that commissioning of services is as effective as it can be.”

Venturing out of the house for the first time in a year

Adrian Argent, 60, from Selsey, works as a caregiver for Chichester-based Home Instead Senior Care, providing help in the home.

When Adrian started working for the care company, little did he know that he would be the person to take his client, Vera Chapman, out of her house for the first time in over a year after suffering from a stroke.

One of the company’s clients, Vera, suffered from a stroke last year and lost all of her confidence.

Adrian worked hard to build her confidence up and accompanied her on her first outing to the local shops.

Vera was so happy to get out of the house after 14 months and her family were equally delighted.

Simon McGee, owner of Home Instead Senior Care, in Chichester, said: “Adrian and Vera’s story is just what we like to see. Caregivers placing their clients at the heart of their care – everything revolves around the client’s needs.

Police issue warning over fraudulent phone calls targeting the elderly BOGUS phone callers have stolen more than £20,000 from three residents in West Sussex by pretending to be police officers and getting them to hand over money to couriers at the door.

On Monday, September 4, an 84-year-old woman living in Westbourne had a call from a man who said he was a police officer in Holborn, and who told her to send bank cards and cash to check for fingerprints as someone in her bank was involved.

She withdrew £8,000 from her bank and handed it to a courier, together with her bank card and cheque book, two days later.

On THursday, September 7, a man who said he was a detective from Hammersmith rang an 85-year-old woman living in Chichester and said her pin number had been compromised in Scotland.

He told her to choose a new password and over the following four days got her to withdraw a total of £7,500 cash on the pretext that this would prevent it being taken out by someone else.

She then gave the cash in three amounts to couriers who came to the door on three separate occasions.

On Tuesday, September 12, a man giving the same details rang a 90-year old woman living in Chichester saying people were using counterfeit money and they needed her help to investigate.

He asked her to call 161 where a woman purported to confirm that he was a genuine officer and told her to choose a password and withdraw £2,500, which she did.

A courier came and collected the cash. She received another call the next day and was instructed to do the same. She made two withdrawals of £2,500 which were collected by a courier.

PC John Blight, of Sussex Police, said: "THe victims were deceived by different ruses into

handing over large sums of cash.

"THe police would never contact anyone and ask them to withdraw or hand over cash to officers. People carrying out these frauds are deliberately targeting those they think are vulnerable, so please look out for your friends, family and anyone you feel may be at risk by passing on this message. Whenever there is doubt that a telephone caller is genuine, simply hang up the phone.

"If you know anything about these incidents or if you yourself have fallen victim to fraud of this type, please report online or call us on 101, quoting Operation Signature."

` Foster care appeal WITH just under 700 children currently in foster care in West Sussex, an appeal is being made for people to help give a local child a temporary home.

THere is a growing number of children and young people needing foster care across the country and West Sussex is no different.

THe county council’s fostering service is also enhancing its support package for carers including improved training.

Local foster carers Sandra and Anthony chose to specialise in fostering a child and their parent at the same time.

Sandra, who was a child-minder for five years prior to fostering, said: "Like anything you do, it has its ups and downs but it has been great.

You must respect their background - which could be very different from your own. It’s important to let them know that you don’t have to be Mary Poppins to be a parent."

THe Fostering Service is keen to hear from people from all backgrounds and with a range of life experience including different ethnic minority backgrounds.

Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Our marvellous foster carers are a huge and incredibly important part of our ability to provide the best possible care and outcomes for some of our children and young people.

Ministers refuse to grant extra time for A27 decision From page one Highways England has asked West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council to look again at the options that were put forward in the Highways England consultation before the scheme was cancelled.

A further community meeting is being held to reach a decision on how they respond to the original consultation by the end of September. THe community will be asked to agree on one of two directions.

One option would be to draw on the work the community has done together on the requirements for the A27 and to explore what improvements would need to be put in place to make one of those options acceptable to the community as a whole.

THe second option is to offer to submit a proposal for improvement to the A27 at Chichester in a future spending period for a future Road Investment Scheme (RIS) programme; namely RIS 2.

Highways England has said that would mean any new scheme for Chichester would be scheduled for start in 2023 as opposed to the current date of 2020.

While this investment is not guaranteed, Highways England will work to support it.

Both West Sussex County Council and

Chichester District Council have agreed to listen to the community to help them agree a way forward.

Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: “THe district council will be considering this matter at a special meeting of council on September 27 when members will take into account the views of the community before reaching a decision on the best way forward to achieve the much needed improvements to the A27 at Chichester.”

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “THis is such disappointing news. As leader of the county council, I have done everything in my power to work with our community to see if we could develop a scheme which would reflect the views of our community following the decision to cancel the scheme earlier this year.

"My view has always been that I will not come down on one side or another but wanted to keep engaging with the community to help them reach an agreement that was right for them; not one foisted upon them.

"We had made real progress in this work.

Now our focus has to be where we take this work now and how do we respond to Highways England.”

Chichester recycling and waste sites changes hours CHICHESTER'S household waste recycling and site will open an hour earlier than expected in the winter months, following a review of demand for services.

All sites in West Sussex will change to winter opening hours from October, 1, opening at 9am and closing at 4pm.

THe change in hours will be in place until March next year.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “When we made changes to opening times last year it was following a consultation with local people.

"THat consultation told us most people wanted later opening times in the evening rather than first thing in the morning. In some areas this doesn’t seem to have been the case.

"We are here to support the people who live in the county. Where they tell us something isn’t working we will always look at how we might be able to improve things.”

THe decision was taken following a review carried out by a cross party member group. THe Task and Finish Group was formed to review changes to opening hours which were introduced in October, 2016.

Mrs Urquhart said: “Encouraging and enabling people to recycle more of their waste is extremely important.

We want to make this as easy as possible for residents.

“At the same time we are always looking at how we can improve our services and make the best use of the money we receive from people paying their council tax.

"THis is in the context of more demand for all of our services coupled with less money from central government. We have to get the balance right between meeting the needs of residents and saving them money.”

` Man arrested A MAN was arrested after a neighbour made a 999 call.

Police were called to Salthill Road, Chichester, after a neighbour called to say they had heard noises and seen a man leaving the property next door at about 10.40pm on September 13.

When they arrived, a man was stopped and searched and was found to have jewellery, electronic devices, passports and other items in a rucksack.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Detective Constable Jon Berisford, of Sussex Police, said: "Acting on a prompt 999 call from a concerned neighbour meant we could search for the suspect and quickly apprehend him and recover stolen property in the process.”

David Cotton, 34, unemployed, of Beach Road, Southsea, was charged with two burglaries which occurred on September 13 in Salthill Road. He has been remanded in custody until October, 13 where he will appear at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Gold standard in pony show for young equine student

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WHILE many at Chichester College were enjoying a summer break, equine student Georgia Darlington was riding to success at the British Show Pony Society Championships.

Georgia, 18 from Ockley, near Horsham, is studying for her diploma in equine management at Brinsbury.

She was invited to represent England at the championships, competing on her horse Lisa's Dream.

THe event was at Arena UK in Lincolnshire last month.

Despite facing the biggest course she has jumped on Lisa, Georgia wasn't daunted. She went on to become the first member of the England team to ride a clean round and take first place.

Georgia said: "I couldn't believe it when I was chosen, as I've wanted to compete on my own horse since 2013, when I had been selected on a different pony.

"So to be selected on my own horse was absolutely incredible and not something I expected in my first year of riding and owning Lisa.

"Usually, they choose people who have had their horses for a few seasons and have developed more established partnerships.

"On the day of the competition, I was surprisingly not that nervous. It was a

very big, technical track but Lisa flew round and made it feel easy.

"Only two riders jumped clear in my class, myself and a Scottish rider, on one of the best horses on the circuit, so I expected to come second which would have been good enough - but I won.

"It was such a brilliant feeling to not only win my individual class, but to also have the first clear round for England."

At the end of the competition, the scores from all classes were totalled .It came as a huge surprise to Georgia to discover she was part of the gold medal winning team.

She said: "It was really exciting when our team was called out as the overall team gold medal winners.

"It was a really amazing experience. I was so proud to be part of it and I'd love to be chosen again to compete on Lisa next year!"

THe British Show Pony Society, in association with THe National Pony Society, was founded in 1949, with the aims to protect and improve the showing of the children's riding ponies by promoting classes and competitions for children's ponies.

Alison Bell, deputy head of learning for equine studies, added: “To win competitions at this level is a fantastic accomplishment and we are all delighted for Georgia.

“She’s a fantastic student, and very modest about her achievements. We’re really proud of her.”

Blake's work is recalled in festival to celebrate his links with town MUSICIANS, artists and poets gathered in Bognor Regis for a festival inspired by Romantic poet William Blake.

Blakefest returned to the town last weekend for the third time and attracted nationwide interest for its programme that included an art exhibition, a guided walk, poetry recitals, live music and a play.

For organisers and those attending Blakefest, the poet’s association with the area is part of what makes the festival so special. William Blake famously wrote the words to Jerusalem while living in Felpham in the early 1800s. He is also connected to Chichester, having been put on trial there for crimes of sedition in 1804.

Poet Stella Bahim, 53, from Portsmouth, was impressed by the level of interest shown by members of the public.

She said: “I have met so many people here with poetry up their sleeves.

“The people of Bognor Regis are really proud of Blake. They relate to him and respect him. This shows there is call for a cultural regeneration in this town.”

Rachel Searle, 51, director of Blakefest, agreed. “This has been the most extraordinary Blakefest so far.

If Blake had been here, he would’ve loved every minute of it. It’s great that the performers all have different styles but they can feel inspired by each other as well as by the work of Blake,” she said.

It was also a bittersweet time for members of the Blakefest committee as they lost a close friend before the festival.

Ms Searle said: “What’s also been different about this year’s event is that Heather Howell, who used to own Blake’s Cottage, passed away on September 12.

“This festival has been dedicated to her memory. So many people who travelled to the cottage would be welcomed in by Heather.”

The cottage in Blakes Road was a focal point for Saturday’s celebrations. Coorganiser Sedge Seymour, 43, of Bognor Regis, spoke of the importance of the Grade II-listed thatched dwelling.

“We were given special access to Blake’s Cottage in Felpham. Stephen Micalef read his own poetry in the garden there where Blake himself used to see visions that inspired his work. Just before Stephen’s recital there was a crash of thunder which made it extremely atmospheric,” he said.

Mr Seymour also spoke of the incentive behind such an event. He said: “So many people say that nothing ever happens in Bognor Regis but that’s not true. If you look out for it, there’s plenty going on.

“We were also excited that the head of West Sussex County Council, Louise Goldsmith, came to support us. This gives us hope for more support for next year’s event.”

Saturday’s Blake exhibition opening at the library, with a virtual reality display pictured right, that runs until October 7, proved popular. Following this, about 50 people joined Niall McDevitt for a guided walk through Bognor Regis that explored the links Blake had with the town.

gathered at the Newtown Sports and Social Club in Greencourt Drive for a day of performances.

Several performers and audience members had travelled for the festival.

Hastings resident Wendy May, 59, praised the variety on offer. "I had never heard of Blakefest before but if it’s on again next year I would definitely come back. There’s such a mixture of arts and genres on offer - it’s great,” she said.

London-based Nicoletta Gori, 30, was similarly impressed. “The atmosphere and music are really good. I came here with my friend, Niall, who led the walk yesterday but I’m staying the whole weekend,” she said.

Singer Tymon Dogg, 67, had also travelled from London. He said: “I have put some of Blake’s poetry to song. What people think of as his poetry are really lyrics. It’s nice to perform here. I used to live relatively close by, in Arundel.”

Many commented that the festival had a unique welcoming feel.

Joe Butt, 56, from Littlehampton, enjoyed performing. “There’s such a friendly atmosphere here. There’s a mutual respect for what everyone does. I would love to come back again,” he said.

Ms Searle thanked everyone who supported the event and was hopeful for Blakefest’s return next year.

“We wouldn’t be able to do it without the funding. We are quite confident that we can get funding for next year,” she added.

Plans for 10km sewer pipeline

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SOUTHERN WATER has unveiled plans for a 10km sewer pipeline in Chichester.

THe pipeline will run from the west of Chichester, across the north of the city and through to Tangmere, where it will connect to Southern Water's Tangmere Wastewater Treatment Works.

THe company is currently in the process of requesting planning permission for the new 10km sewer pipeline and upgrading and expansion of their existing sewer network.

THis will include three new pumping stations to take away and treat wastewater from proposed new homes, identified in Chichester District Council’s Local Plan.

THe application will be submitted to West Sussex County Council in late November.

In the firm's current plans, the first pumping station will be at the start of the pipeline.

A second will be built close to Madgwick Lane and the third in Tangmere, to the west of Tangmere Military Avitation Museum.

THe pumping stations will be largely below ground – all that will be visible above ground will be green kiosks and a treatment unit.

THe pipeline will be a maximum 315mm in diameter – roughly the same as a dinner plate.

In some environmentally sensitive sections, Southern Water will be using directional drilling via small pits from which tunnels can be created to insert pipework, causing less disruption at ground level.

THe majority of the trench work will be in fields. Around 17 areas along the route will be used to store equipment for the works and the company has stated it hopes these will cause minimum disruption.

Southern Water has said that protecting the environment and ecology is a priority and a detailed environmental impact assessment has been carried out, working closely with local authorities, as well as organisations such as Natural

England, the Environment Agency, Sussex Wildlife Trust and Highways England.

THe work has included surveys to look for badgers, reptiles, bats and birds, among others.

According to its website, Southern Water hopes to start in summer 2018, completing construction within 18 months, and reinstatement of all areas within two years.

THe work would start at the eastern end,

working westwards from Tangmere.

At this stage, the firm is requesting planning permission for the project and aiming to submit its application to West Sussex County Council in late November.

Southern Water is holding an exhibition on November 8 to share its final plans.

John ends 33 years as pastor WORSHIPPERS at a Bognor Regis church have welcomed their first new pastor for more than 33 years.

Ben Leney has taken over the role at King's Gate Church from John France.

John, 67, handed the leadership of the church to Ben at one of the regular Sunday services.

John had been pastoring the church since 1984 and will be fully retiring before Christmas. He said: "It has been my desire to hand the church on to the next generation for some years now.

"In Ben Leney, I know we have a man of integrity who will bring fresh vision and inspiration to the church.

"I am sure he and Louise will be successful. Beryl and I pray that they and the church will be truly blessed in this new appointment."

King's Gate Church started in 1970 and has been independent until a recent decision to affiliate to the Elim family of churches to join its 500-plus churches across the UK. The church meets each Sunday at The Regis School off Westloats Lane. Its services have an average congregation size of 40-60 individuals.

Services began at 11am and tea and coffee are available from 10.30am.

Most meetings start with some 25-30 minutes of praise and worship.

A half-hour talk based on a theme or passage from the Bible follows for adults.

Younger worshippers have their own groups.

Ben, 39. said: "We are a friendly allage church from and we offer a relaxed, charismatic culture on a Sunday morning. Until recently, we ran a breakfast club on a Sunday morning that was funded by Think Family."

This is part of West Sussex County Council's work to provide help and support for children and their families.

"This year we are supporting a coffee and craft morning that will fund work in Kenya and also planning to do a monthly Sunday meal for those who are single or generally on their own."

Ben is also known among the Christian community in the town for the prayer

concerts he has arranged at various churches. They include the Salvation Army, St Wilfrid's, Opengate, St Mary Magdalene Church at South Bersted and Aldwick Baptist Church.

When he is not involved in church activities, he spends time with his wife, Louise, and two sons, or teaching English.

He is part of the co-ordinating group

for Churches Together in Bognor Regis, which is currently chaired by the Rev Tim Crook, of St Mary Magdalene.

Now John is retiring, he plans to keep serving the Lord and continuing to take part in the life of King's Gate Church.

But he is intending to spend much more time relaxing with his wife, children and grandchildren, with the bonus of the occasional pint of real ale.

` New family home A SCHEME which could change the lives of numerous families has been backed for a former guest home in Bognor Regis.

Georgina Puttock has gained planning approval from Arun District Council for her scheme to create a secure residential family home. This will offer round the clock help and care for young families and their babies and children.

Arun has approved the proposal for the Swan Guest House in Nyewood Lane with five conditions.

These will ensure minimum standards are met in the accommodation and that fire safety measures are installed.

Mrs Puttock told the council the property's new use would see it called Ambient House.

"Ambient House provides a safe environment for parents who have had difficulties in caring for their children," she stated.

"We promote and assess parenting skills to ensure that children are safe and protected. We offer families an opportunity for intensive support to help them recognise the needs of their children."

Up to six families, of a mother and baby, will be accommodated. Three or four daytime staff will be present and two at night.

"The families will be referred to us via social services and the courts, who will remain heavily involved as part of the multi-agency teams we will be working with," added Mrs Puttock.

Strong links will also be set up with organisations such as the West Sussex family centres and drug and alcohol support unit.

School provides lessons in how to make use of old site NEW LIFE is being breathed into an empty school in North Bersted.

The classrooms at the previously redundant site are resounding to the sounds of Chichester Free Schools’ lessons and playtime games.

They have been filled by the arrival of the free school’s primary section for the next year.

The 390 pupils moved into the site in Romney Broadwalk this month – and they are loving their new home.

Ten-year-old classmates Jessica Cotton and Freddie Taylor are both in their third year at the school and gave their latest premises ten out of ten.

They are revelling in their surroundings after previously being taught at the free school’s main site in Vinnetrow Road.

Jessica said: “It’s really nice here.

There are a lot of different rooms. The old site was a bit small and I feel that it is quite a bit bigger here.

“We have a block for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils and that gives us more space.”

Freddie said: “I love the new site. We can spread out and do what we like.

The classrooms are about the same size but people do not have to walk through them and that makes them better.”

The free school was given planning permission last summer to site seven modular classrooms in part of the former school’s playground.

Two are new and have been joined to five from Vinnetrow Road. The block is used for the older pupils.

The younger ones in Reception and Years 1 and 2 are taught in the original school buildings complete with its hall

f Having fun in the playground the start of this month. He said: “What is so good about this is that is a proper school building.

“It’s fantastic to see it come back to life in a site which would otherwise have stood empty.

“The move from Vinnetrow Road was completed on time. We moved across the kitchen so we could continue to offer hot meals to the children here.

We also moved some of our modular classrooms and added two more to cope with the number of pupils we have.

“It is a lovely space. There are fantastic classrooms and an outside play area for the children to enjoy during their breaks. The feedback from staff, pupils and parents has been really positive.

They have been saying how pleased

They have stood empty since July, 2014, when the former Bartons Infant School moved out 40 years after planning permission enabled it to be created and thousands of children enjoyed their first taste of school there.

It moved a short distance away to Lethaby Road among the new housing of Bersted Park but its original location was kept intact by West Sussex County Council.

The site has proved ideal for the free school as its number of primary and secondary pupils grows, with 590 senior students currently, before a move into its new permanent home in the former Carmelite convent in Hunston next September.

The free school was set up in 2013 and has pupils from an area which stretches from Emsworth to Littlehampton.

It is the third headship for Chichester resident Mr Hanna, 39, in his 20th year in teaching.

He knows the area well, having graduated from the Bognor Regis campus of the University of Chichester.

He will be looking after 30 extra pupils from next September to take the primary section of the school to its capacity. He is in charge of 40 staff, of whom 15 are teachers, and is enjoying his early days of working in an allthrough school where the children can stay from Reception year onwards.

KEY Stage 1 leader Claire Emmett is the longest serving Chichester Free School teacher who has moved to the site.

She joined a year after the school opened and can appreciate the differences between the two locations.

“I love the new site,” said Claire, pictured above. “We are able to use the space much better.

"The children have got a beautiful playground with lots more space.

“You can just feel the children are a lot happier in a building which was built for a primary school.

“It’s also nice that people do not have to go through the classrooms here. That was very disruptive.

“We also used to have to share our classrooms with the senior pupils and now we have got space for ourselves.

We can be more creative in the way we teach.

“In the old school, I had to store 30 cellos in the classroom – and that was not easy.”

Town will come alive with the sound of folk f Waspi members at their Middleton meeting

Women to rally against pensions PENSION campaigners from Bognor Regis and Chichester are set to protest at the Labour Party conference to publicise their cause.

The Bognor and Chichester South Coast Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) group members will travel to the annual event at the Brighton Centre next Tuesday.

Group founder Jill Robertson said: "We are meeting at 9.45am at Bognor Regis station, for the 9.56am train to go to Barnham station to catch the 10.08am train to Brighton.

"The train is stopping at stations between Angmering and Hove. We welcome any 1950s-born women, who are affected by this delay to their pensions, to join us."

PLENTY of music and dancing will continue today with the Southdowns Folk Festival now well underway.

Folk musicians The Jigantics and Steve Knightly entertained audiences last night at the Alexandra Theatre in Bognor Regis and further music will be provided tonight by duo Megson and rock band Home Service who will also take to the stage.

However, this weekend the festival gets into full swing with a packed programme of acoustic music, folk dancing, markets, workshops, performances and the Sussex Young Folk Competition, with many of these events free.

Taking place across Bognor Regis with venues including the Regis Centre, Place St Maur, the High Street, the London Road precinct and various pubs such as the William Hardwicke, The Alex and The Hothampton Arms, the festival promises to offer something for everyone.

This is the fifth year the festival has come to Bognor Regis and chairman Roger Nash hopes this could be their most successful event yet.

He said: "The festival attracts many thousands of visitors, some coming to the town for the very first time.

Sara Whitworth, the home’s new manager, explained what the carols could mean for those in the home.

She said: “We are all so pleased to be a part of this, it’s such a good cause.

“It is so exciting for the residents and will be lovely for them to meet the children taking part.

“THey love music, especially around Christmas-time, and to have it sung live to them will be so special.

“Our residents are so excited for such a unique experience for this year’s Christmas entertainment.”

Chalcraft Hall offers care for people over the age of 65. However, they specialise in caring for dementia patients.

Make a date for a healthy life with this tasty fruit MY GUILTY pleasure has always been chocolate.

Give me a choice of wine, crisps or chocolate, and hands down it would be chocolate every time. And yes, a little bit of what you fancy is OK. But what happens if you can’t stop at one chunk, and if you just eat the whole packet? Sound familiar?

Well, I find the most helpful thing for me to do is find an alternative.

That is something that is going to hit the spot, and leave you feeling satisfied! The best thing I have found for this is eating dates.

From the time they were discovered, which was thousands of years ago, dates have not only been enjoyed, but were also known to have healing powers. And while science has proved that for sure, we love to eat them mostly because of how delicious these dark fruits are.

According to history, date palm is known to have come from what is now Iraq, and the Egyptians were known to have made wine with dates a lot earlier in history.

Thanks to trade, dates then travelled to south west Asia, Spain, northern Africa, and were later also taken to Mexico and California. Today, they continue to be one of the most important ingredients in Middle Eastern cuisine.

While there are at least 30 kinds of dates that are found around the world, they pretty much fall under three broad types - soft, semi-dry, and dry, and the differentiation is made according to the glucose, sucrose, and fructose content.

One of the most coveted dates is found in the Gaza Strip, as their produce is known to be exceptionally red and sweet. One of the other popular varieties are the zaghloul, found exclusively in Egypt. It has a dark red skin, is longish in structure, and crunchy in

minerals, energy, sugar, and fibre. They also contain calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc.

So, why is it good to include these sweet treats in our daily diet plan?

1 - Lowers cholesterol: Did you know that dates are free from cholesterol, and contain very little fat?

Including them in smaller quantities in your daily diet can help you keep a check on cholesterol level, and even assist in weight loss.

2 - Protein rich: Dates are a strong source for proteins that help us stay fit, and even keep our muscles strong. If you are a regular gym goer, I would highly recommend eating a couple of dates every day as part of your routine.

3 - Rich in vitamins: Dates contain vitamins such as B1, B2, B3 and B5, as well as A1 and C. If you have a few dates every day, you won't have to take vitamin supplements. Not only will it keep you healthy, there will be a noticeable change in your energy levels as well because dates contain natural sugars such as glucose, sucrose, and fructose. So they work really well as a quick snack.

4 - Improve bone health: Dates are rich in selenium, manganese, copper, and magnesium, and all of these are required when it comes to keeping our bones healthy, and preventing conditions such as osteoporosis.

5 - Strengthens the nervous system: Dates are loaded with potassium, and yet contain little sodium, and that goes a long way in keeping your nervous system in

order. The potassium helps to reduce cholesterol, and keeps the risk of a stroke in check.

6 - Rich in iron: Dates contain iron, which is highly recommended for those who suffer from iron deficiency. Plus it's great for blood purification as well.

7 - Promote digestion: If you soak a few dates in water and chew on them daily, your digestive system will behave itself. Dates are also recommended for those who have trouble with constipation.

8 - Improve skin: Both Vitamin C and D work on your skin's elasticity, and also keeps your skin smooth. Plus, if you suffer from skin problems, incorporating dates into your diet might help you in the long run. The annual horticultural show is included as part of the show, with classes to suit all ages, ranging from vegetables to woodwork, marmalade to mini scarecrows. Entry forms can be accessed online using the link.

And look out for colourful displays of flowers created by the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. Their talented team will be laying a flower trail, beginning at the event entrance and throughout the museum.

Community News & Views CHAMPION chess player Rolandas Lukoshius took on nine fellow members of Bognor Regis Chess Club at once.

He beat six of them, drew one of the games and lost only two to show why he had retained the title of being its top player for the second year in succession.

He went from board to board making moves and the simultaneous matches were held at the end of the club's annual meeting at which Rolandas, pictured below left, was presented with his trophy for the latest time from the chairman, Bill Partridge.

The occasion earlier this month also co-incided with Bill's 80th birthday and was preceeded by a food and drink buffet.

A club spokesman said: "Bill said that 2016/17 had been a very successful competition season. Combining with Chichester Chess Club members, teams had finished first in all the three divisions of the Portsmouth League, and all the club tournaments had been well contested."

As well as Rolandas, the club's other winning member was Mike Spence who had finished clearly in the lead of the summer tournament which had ended just before the meeting.

"The trophies were presented to both winners and the coming season was discussed with plans to challenge Bognor Regis campus students of the University of Chichester and promote an under-18 open tournament at half-term," said the spokesman.

"The local schools are to be contacted with the details and a generous cash prize is to be offered."

All the club's committee members were re-elected at the meeting.

The club meets at 7pm on Fridays at The Bognor Club in Sudley Road.

AUTUMN is beginning for West Sussex Guitar Club with tomorrow's first recital of the season.

The Classical Guitar Gala will see the club welcome four talented young guitarists at 7.30pm to the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road. They are Royal College of Music graduates Laura Snowden, Jonatan Bougt, Ioannis Theodoridis and Sam Brown, who will present a colourful programme of guitar solos and ensembles.

Laura, an award-winning classical guitarist and composer, was handpicked by the famous Julian Bream in 2015 to give the Bream Trust concert at Wigmore Hall.

She was also featured on a front cover of Classical Guitar magazine last year with an in-depth article which described her as 'linking the guitar's past, present and future'.

Jonatan is a Swedish guitarist and theorbo player. He is studying under Carlos Bonell and Chris Stell and theorbo with Jakob Lindberg at the Royal College of Music in London. He is a multiple prize winner in the UK and abroad.

Ioannis was recently awarded the National Scholarship Award from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He is a Master of Performance graduate from the Royal College of Music.

Passionate about new music, he performs extensively with What Guitar Trio, which specialises in contemporary music, performing at Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre and National Portrait Gallery this year. He has also appeared at several world premieres as well as touring in Sweden and Greece.

Sam was a student of the inspirational Sasha Levtov at the Regis School of Music and is establishing himself as one of the finest lutenists and guitarists of his generation and pursues a busy career playing the instruments.

He is an orchestral soloist, has played in various lute song combos and has performed around the world.

A NATIONAL officer of a charity helped to celebrate 25 years of its Bognor Regis group.

Helpline and volunteer engagement officer Paul McGowan was guest of honour at the silver jubilee party of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society's branch in Bognor Regis. He brought with him a letter of congratulations from the charity's chief executive, Debbie Cooke.

About 20 members and friends of the branch, pictured above, were present at the event at the Chichester home of its treasurer, John Wilton, and his wife, Claire.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a painful, progressive form of inflammatory arthritis. It affects an estimated 200,000 people in the UK - that's twice the number who have Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

Anthony Tuffin, the branch's chairman, said: "The centrepiece of the party was a delicious cake, baked

by the party's hostess, Claire Wilton. Lyudmil Kostadinov, the branch's physiotherapist, supplied Bulgarian delicacies.

"Members and guests reminisced looking back at photos of past branch events over 25 years, collated and displayed by the host, John Wilton," said Mr Tuffin.

He thanked members for their support. He paid tribute to those who had founded the branch in 1992 and said the present members had a duty to keep it going to help people with AS in the future.

AS can lead to the irreversible fusing of the spine and it can also affect other joints, tendons and ligaments.

Eyes, bowel, skin, lungs and heart might also be affected.

There is no cure for the condition. It is managed by a mixture of pain relief and stretching exercises.

AS patients, mainly in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas, meet for gym and hydrotherapy exercise at 6pm every Wednesday at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

Sir I RECENTLY read your article regarding West Sussex awarding huge sums of money to communities to help prevent flooding.

I am utterly bemused, we have councils granting permissions daily to builders to build houses everywhere and anywhere, flood plains, green belt, et al. It's no wonder we have so many floods - the storm water has nowhere to go.

Interesting to see the caveat that groups applying for the funding have to agree to take on the maintenance responsibility for the work carried out.

The council can save money in the vain hope locals will keep ditches and waterways clear ... yeah, right, I can see that continuing ... not. Wait until the good old health and safety brigade hear about that.

Now, due to the huge number of houses being built it seems council tax money is being given away to prevent flooding, you couldn't make it up.

When are we going to realise water does not pass through roads and concrete? The answer is so, so simple ... STOP building on open land. There are so many brownfield sites sitting vacant.

Why greedy councils are being allowed to waste money in this way is beyond me. Too many houses, too many people, too many roads - enough is enough.

Sir I AM writing in to say how pathetic I think some of our councils are becoming. Housebuilding has become a huge issue in this area at the moment so I think residents and the electorate have every right to voice their opinion.

But it seems no. If we disagree with council wishes and say so, they start whining they are being threatened (Issue 70).

Well, it is us who are threatened by stupid housing plans not thought through, results of which can be seen by driving around or trying to drive around. I thought councils were there to do what is best for the residents and the area. That's what they told us when they wanted our votes a few months ago.

Now, it seems they have to do what the government says. If that's the case, we do not need a council do we? Which means democracy is gone. So, I suggest the councils should stop whining and stand up to the government and do their job for the interests of the residents which is what they said they would do.

ARTISTS in Bognor Regis Art Society welcomed Hagop Kasparian, pictured above, to demonstrate painting in oils.

Hagop chose a harbour scene in muted colours and this led to a lively and amusing morning class which resulted in a beautiful painting at the society's latest meeting.

Sue Harrington, of the society, said: "The afternoon was spent trying to emulate his skills under his kind and thoughtful direction.

"Hagop is a well-established Weald artist with years of experience as a teacher of art.

He has exhibited in London and the south."

His main interests are painting landscapes and marine subjects in oil and watercolour.

FREE electric blanket testing is being offered to residents in the Bognor Regis area.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is offering the service next month in Bognor Regis Fire Station, Yapton Village Hall and in Chichester.

The checks are aimed at keeping residents safe from fire, by identifying electric blankets which pose a potential fire risk.

The service's expert team will look at blankets which are taken along for any weakness in the structure and any abnormalities with the electric current when they are switched on.

The first of the sessions in the Post area will take place at Joy's Croft in St Pancras in Chichester on October 9.

It will be followed by testing at Bognor Regis Fire Station, in West Meads Drive, on October 16. Yapton's session will be held on October 30 in the village hall in Main Road.

Jackie Boyle, the service's community fire safety manager, said: "In 2016, our team tested 535 electric blankets, pictured above, and found that 173 carried a potential fire risk - that's almost a third of all those we tested being unsafe for use.

"Elderly members of our community, and those with mobility issues, can be especially vulnerable. So we're urging everyone who uses an electric blanket to take up the offer of a free test."

The impact of the Royal Air Force at Tangmere

By Amy Roberts, Collections Officer at The Novium Museum TANGMERE was chosen as a suitable site for an aerodrome as a result of a forced landing

by Royal Flying Corps pilot Lieutenant Geoffrey Dorman in 1916 during World War I. Lieutenant Dorman had been piloting a FE2B pusher biplane from Shoreham on route to Gosport when it had developed engine problems, forcing him to land in a large open field just south of the village of Tangmere. In his report of the incident, Dorman suggested the field and those around it would make an ideal landing ground. THe War Office subsequently began construction the following year.

From March, 1918, the site was occupied by 91, 92 and 93 Squadrons of the Royal Flying Corps, using the aerodrome for training purposes. Once America entered the war, it was realised that their pilots lacked combat experience and plans were made to train their pilots in oversees aerodromes with experienced pilots, and Tangmere was one such aerodrome.

In August that year, Tangmere officially opened as an ASAEF (Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force) and American airmen arrived. After the Armistice on November 11, 1918, members of ASAEF began to return home, and by January, 1919, very few ASAEF staff remained at Tangmere. For the remainder

of 1919, the site was utilised by the RAF as a demobilisation and training depot. At the end of 1919, however, the site was inventoried, vacated and put up for disposal.

In 1923 the site was purchased from the American government by the Crown, when it was decided that the aerodrome was to be reopened as part of the RAF’s development of Home Defences. On June 1, 1925, Tangmere was reopened as a military aerodrome, under the command of the Royal Air Force. For almost a year and a half it was utilised as an aircraft storage depot awaiting the arrival of up to date fighter aircraft, officers, men, and other personnel and equipment to bring the station into full operation.

During the interwar period Squadrons No 1 and 43 were based at Tangmere, joined in 1937 by three new Squadrons No 72 and 87 (Fighter) equipped with Gloster Gladiators and No. 233 equipped with General Reconnaissance (GR) Anson aircraft. Later Nos 72 and 87 were to be replaced by No 217, another GR Anson Squadron.

accommodation. In response to the increasing threat of war, air raid shelters were also constructed and buildings and planes were painted in camouflage.

During World War Two, Tangmere, due to its position along the south coast, was an important base for fighter squadrons involved in the Battle of Britain. When France fell in May, 1940, squadrons from Tangmere were on the front line in the fight, constantly engaging in combat with the Luftwaffe.

On July 23, 1940, a Blenheim night fighter based at Tangmere shot down a German plane using the new Airborne Interception (AI) radar.

THis was significant as it was first time this had ever been done.

A major enemy attack on Tangmere came on August 16, 1940. A Stuka (a German bomber) raid caused significant damage to buildings.

Seven Hurricanes were destroyed and ten service staff and six civilians were killed. THe airfield, however, remained in service and was quickly brought back to full operation.

From 1942, Tangmere was also utilised by RAF Special Duties Squadrons supporting the Special Operations Executive. Lysander aeroplanes were used to transport special agents into and out of occupied France to support the Resistance.

Squadrons at Tangmere were heavily involved in Operation Jubilee (the combined raid on Dieppe) and also played a pivotal role in Operation Overlord, better known as the D-Day landings, flying patrols over the beaches.

After the war, the RAF High Speed Flight was based at Tangmere. THe world airspeed record was broken there in September, 1946, and again in August, 1953, by the Hawker Aircraft Company.

In June, 1958, Fighter Command left. However, the airfield remained operational until October 16, 1970, when the station was closed. THe closure was commemorated by a single Spitfire flying over the airfield, as the RAF ensign was hauled down. THe airfield continued to be used by a gliding school until 1975.

THe Tangmere Military Aviation Museum occupies part of the former airfield. It was founded by a group of enthusiastic volunteers and opened its doors to visitors in 1982. It tells the fascinating story of the history of the airfield and serves as a memorial to those allied airmen and airwomen who gave their lives in the service of this country.

Chi head for top-of-table clash on PostSport back of impressive derby day win CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping to continue their sparkling start to the season as first meets second in London & South East Division One South.

Scott Ashley's side have been irresistible so far this term, notching up three bonus point wins from three after relegation last term.

The latest was an impressive 30-17 victory over unbeaten local rivals Havant in front of a partisan home crowd at Oaklands Park.

But the Blues will need to be at their best once again tomorrow when they travel to table-topping CS Rugby (3pm).

The Chiswick-based side sit above Chi on points difference - and everyone at Oaklands Park is under no doubt about the challenge that awaits them after their journey to west London.

Club spokesman Roger Gould described it as the Blues 'toughest test of the season', adding: "They have recruited well, including the talented scrum half Nixon from Guernsey, who scored against Chi last season."

Ashley's XV made sure they go into the top-of-the-table clash in great form after

a convincing four try win over their nearneighbours.

It was the first time since 2013 that Havant had travelled to Oaklands.

But Chi did not let that fact prevent them from making a fast start.

With former skipper Scott Barlow back in their ranks after a spell with Worthing in the national leagues, the Blues scored with their first attack when winger Nat Jackson dived over for the score.

After conceding a converted try, Chi chipped back with Henry Anscombe adding two penalties.

Havant hit back and it was only thanks to Barlow crashing over for a converted score that the Blues went in at the break 18-17.

The second period, though, was all Chi, with Sam Renwick bursting over from 20 yards out before Aaron Davies smashed down from a lineout break to secure the bonus point for the home side.

Chi could have had more, especially with two late penalties.

But it was not to be and the Blues had to settle for a satisfying 30-17 victory over their local rivals.

RUGBY: Brave Bognor RFC will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the Hampshire One campaign.

Tries from debutant Paddy Burnett (2), Tom James and Shane Stevens were not enough as the Hampshire Avenue side fell to a 30-25 defeat on the road at Southampton-based Millbrook.

It was a good comeback from Stevens' side who found themselves down 24-10 at the break. But with some great work from the pack they slowly edged back into the game. Quick hands put Stevens in the clear to touch down before Burnett danced through the Millbrook defence to score his second try and Bognor's third.

After the home side slotted through a penalty, James then forced in at the corner making it a one score game.

After pushing their opponents all the way, Bognor were unable to find the solitary score to overhaul the home side's lead. They did secure two bonus points, though, to take them to third.

Speaking after the match, flanker Adam Knight said: “We battled hard and we’re all going to be feeling it in the morning."

Bognor return to action tomorrow at home to table-topping Sandown & Shanklin (3pm).

CRICKET: The family of Selsey CC cricketer Dave Clarke have thanked the club after a special memorial match was held at Paddock Lane.

Clarke, who died in May, aged 56, coached dozens of youngsters at Chichester City Youth FC. He was also a regular for Selsey CC second team, captaining their Sunday side.

Representatives from the village's town and football clubs played in the match on Sunday at Selsey CC to pay tribute to the stalwart of sport in the area.

Writing on Facebook, his sister, Anita, told the club: "My family and I would like to thank you all for the support you have given us over the past four months. Thank you so much for your kindness."

THE BOGNOR Friday Summer Darts League was rounded off in style as the last tournament of the season saw two players from QE2 in The Steyne cruise to victory in the Blind Trebles Knockout.

A record number of 87 players took part in the tournament, which sees players from rival teams put together into scratch teams.

After some fierce darts, the final came down to Mark H Todd (BRSA Ravens), Stuart Gray (QE2 Galleon) & Gary Blackwood (BRSA Wanderers) against Ian Dendy (QE2 Galleon), Richard Ragless (Squash Club) & Paul Bizzell (QE2 Galleon).

The final saw Blackwood beat Ragless with the bullseye, giving his team the first throw.

They kept the lead all the way to the double, but misses at the doubles allowed Dendy, Ragless & Bizzell to catch up, with Bizzell hitting the double for the first leg.

The second leg saw a slow but steady start from Dendy, Ragless & Bizzell, while Blackwood started with 125.

This still left them behind. But with a 140 from Ragless to leave 16, Dendy only needed one dart to hit double 8, taking the leg, and the win, making himself, Ragless and Bizzell this years Blind Trebles Champions, and taking home £216 between them.

The evening also saw the presentation of the trophies for the competition held during the summer.

BOWLS: After five months of competition, Little Spain Bowling Club's Internal Friday League was settled with just one point separating the top two teams.

Runners up were Team F comprising Vicky Baldwin, Peter Latchford, Val Palmer and Derek Wyatt, who will be happy with their cash prizes but disappointed that they didn't quite make top spot.

That went to Team C made up of Geoff Tipper, Chris Lankshear, Chris Bond and Sylvia Ballinger who collected the coveted Gordon Simmons Trophy.

Little Spain's penultimate friendly fixture was a visit from Pagham BC and it was the Selsey home side who were victorious winning by 80-67.

SHORT MAT BOWLS: The outdoor bowls season may be over for another year. But those looking to stay active over the winter months are invited to try out Infinity Short Mat Bowls Club.

They play at Boxgrove Village Hall on Tuesdays from 7.30pm.

Practice for the coming season is underway with the first match in the Knockout Cup on October 10 at 7.30pm at home to Selsey-Based Crablands.

That is followed by their first League match on October 15 at 2pm at home to Mannings Heath.

New players of all ages are always welcome.

Goals galore enable Chi City to banish their away day blues

Lions seek to be consistent PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds believes his side will take time to find the consistency needed to fire the Lions to success this season.

The Nyetimber Lane side have struggled to string together a series of results in recent weeks, falling into a habit of 'win one, lose one'.

That form was repeated in the past week when Pagham suffered a surprise 2-1 loss at Worthing United in the SCFL Premier last weekend, only to bounce back three days later with a 5-1 demolishing of Seaford Town in the RUR Cup. With another two games coming in the next four days, Simmonds is hoping his side can record back-to-back wins for only the second time this season.

He said: "It's been a mixed week.

"We had perhaps our best performance of the season at Littlehampton [winning 6-1] last Tuesday.

"Then we went to Worthing United and even after five or ten minutes you could tell we weren't really at it.

"After going in at the break one-up we tried changing a few things but nothing went for us in the second half.

Worthng just stayed in the game and were always going to get that chance."

After Saturday's defeat to a late strike, Pagham needed a good performance on Tuesday.

And they got it thanks to goals from Alex Ansa-McIntyre, Scott Murfin, Callum Overton, Terrell Lewis and Joe Kilhams.

Tomorrow sees the Lions travel to Loxwood in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup (3pm).

Pagham have fond memories of playing at Plaistow Road having won 4-1 in the league at the ground less than a month ago.

Then on Tuesday, they return to league action, hosting Crawley Down Gatwick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With many at Nyetimber Lane hoping the youthful side could push towards the top end of the table, the current placing of 11th in the 20team league has been slightly disappointing so far.

Simmonds said: "We're struggling to back up a really good performance instead giving one that we're really not like at all.

"We need to find that level of consistency and, when we do, will be a very good side."

CHICHESTER City will be looking to take their free-scoring ways on the road with two tough away trips in the next four days.

Miles Rutherford's side have swiftly become the entertainers in the SCFL Premier, with their seven league matches bringing an average of close to five goals a game.

After a series of ruthless performances at Oaklands Park, they finally won their first match away this term, racking up a 4-2 victory at East Preston.

That win, which came courtesy of goals from Scott Jones (2), Dan Hegarty and Josh Clack, took Chi into second, just one point behind early pacesetters Saltdean United.

But with two tough away matches to come this week - starting at Worthing United tomorrow (3pm) and then at Three Bridges on Tuesday (7.45pm) - Rutherford's side will need to be at their best to continue a fourmatch unbeaten run.

After the East Preston match the, Chi boss said: "It was the first game we worked hard for 90 minutes and we got the result.

"Hopefully we can keep the same sort of attitude in the upcoming games."

Blues return to Vase action

SELSEY will be hoping to take their stellar league form into cup competition as they prepare to make Sussex proud tomorrow.

The Blues head across the border into Hampshire to take on Portsmouth-based Baffins Milton Rovers in the second round of the FA Vase (3pm).

It is the first time in two seasons that SCFL Division One side Selsey have taken part in the national non-league competition.

Steve Bailey's side will face a tough fight against the Wessex Premier side, who sit seventh in a league which is one step higher

than the Blues.

Selsey make the short trip having lost their 100 per cent record in the league, too, after drawing 1-1 at Seaford Town last time out.

Morgan Forry scored his sixth of the season to give Bailey's side the lead. But, after the break, that winning position was relinquished.

The draw drops Selsey to third, below Little Common and Wick on goal difference with the trio all winning 19 points from their first seven matches.

in the RUR Cup second round with a 3-2 defeat on penalties at St Francis Rangers after the tie was drawn 2-2 following extra time.

Bailey's team will need to be at their best tomorrow when they travel to Portsmouth.

Baffins Milton Rovers may be relative novices at this level, making their debut in the Vase this season.

But they certainly know how to entertain, with their ten league matches so far involving 42 goals.

Elsewhere, SCFL Division Two side Sidlesham stretched their unbeaten start to the season to six with a 2-0 away win at Rottingdean Village.

A goal in each half for Dan Bassil and Thomas Bayley secured the victory for Daren Pearce's side and lifts them to fourth.

Next up is a trip to play Cowfold at the Roffey Sports and Social Club in Horsham tomorrow (2pm).

Sitting just below the Sids in fifth are Bosham, who got their campaign back on track with a 2-1 win at home to Worthing Town.

Callum Coker gave Gary Lines' team the lead before the visitors equalised after the break.

It took a James Wilson strike on the hour mark to secure the victory at Walton Lane.

Tomorrow Bosham have the longest trip of the season heading west of Hastings to visit Westfield (3pm).

Chi Ladies hit their stride in the league CHICHESTER City Ladies appear to be enjoying life in the FA Women's Premier League after registering three wins in a row.

Matt Wright's side produced their best performance of the season to chalk up a 4-0 victory over West Ham United at Oaklands Park on Sunday.

That was followed up by a 2-2 draw against local rivals Portsmouth on Wednesday evening.

Next up is another local match, as the Green and White army welcome Lewes to Oaklands Park on Sunday at 2pm.

The growing number of Chi fans will be hoping to see a repeat performance of last weekend's result against West Ham. After a quiet first half which ended goalless, Chi sparked into life in the second period.

Striker Cherelle Khassal nicked the ball from the Hammers' keeper, took the ball round her and smashed it into the goal.

Chi made to two shortly after when Charley Wilson-Blakely hit in a half-valley after a good ball from Kerrie Ryan.

Wilson-Blakely scored her second and Chi's third with a stunning left foot strike after good work from Khassal. The scoring was rounded off by Jade Widdows who slotted home from the edge of the box. It was the second time this month Chi had hammered the east end Irons after a 4-1 win in the league cup.

Elsewhere, the Chi Ladies development squad beat Bexhill United Ladies 3-1 thanks to goals from Teri Foster, Lucy Cook and Lou Lou Robson.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is hoping a bit of luck can help kick-start the Rocks' stalled season.

Patience was growing thin at Nyewood Lane as the injury-hit side went eight games without a win. But an injury-time header from James Crane sealed a 2-1 victory over National South rivals Weston-super-Mare to put the Rocks in the next round of the FA Cup. It is, therefore, with renewed optimism Bognor return to league action tomorrow, with midtable Gloucester City at Nyewood Lane (3pm).

For Pearce, who was receiving some criticism from certain sections of supporters before last weekend's victory, all thoughts now switch to making sure the Rocks take the fighting spirit into the next match.

Pearce said: "In football terms it is all about performances. You very rarely win a game of football if you do not perform but if you are performing right then you will always win more than lose. What you don't always get, though, is a bit of luck " You could argue that we got that on Saturday with the late goal as, just before we scored, they had a good chance.

"I can understand them feeling unlucky with the winner coming late but if anyone was going to win the match I felt it was us.

"There's still a lot of hard work to do as we're allowing far too many chances at the back."

After going in at half-time a goal down, the

Rocks were much the better side in the second period.

An own goal brought them level. Then, six minutes into injury time, it was over to Crane, who headed home from close range to seal the Rocks' first win in more than a month.

The late strike also meant that Bognor avoided a long midweek trip to Somerset, giving them longer to nurse back a squad which is close to full health.

Pearce said: "In this league there is not a hair's breadth between any of the sides. We also have a team where no one in the current squad played at this standard last year.

"But it is no surprise that we had three back of the five who were injured a month ago and we performed a lot better."

That victory means the Rocks will travel to play fellow National South side Eastbourne Borough in the third qualifying round next weekend.

It will see Bognor face up to former manager Jamie Howell for the second time this term. Before then, though, the Rocks will host Gloucester City in the league, a side in 13th place and winless in four in all competitions.

Pearce said: "I don't know much about them.

It will be much the same as the rest of the teams in this league -they will have good days and bad days.

"Hopefully we will have a good day and we will catch them on a bad day."

Pearce rounds on club's critics IT DIDN'T take long for a few fans to start making their feelings known.

After five years of playing winning football, Bognor supporters are not used to long periods without going home with three points.

So, after a victory drought of more than a month, it was perhaps inevitable in this era of short attention spans that some began calling for Jack Pearce to step down as manager.

After more than four decades at the club, it will take more than a few angry calls on social media to force the club stalwart to walk away.

As has been the case during his time at Nyewood Lane - first as a player, then manager and general manager - Pearce was open and blunt with his thoughts.

He said: "I would rather they did it personally and to my face. They are not helping the club in anyway by writing things on social media or a website. It really does not help in any way as we try to bring players in and for those young players to see negative things being written online.

"I would willingly meet the critics every week but I don't think they want to listen to rationale.

"I do not mind what they say about me. The only thing I care about is the potential damage caused to getting players in and the squad."

A WEEK is a long time in any form of pressure-situation but boy did we all need that win against Weston-super-Mare in the FA Cup. So from my own perspective, getting the winner six minutes in stoppage time, I was definitely pleased how it finished.

As a team I think we were obviously conscious about needing a result but the way we did it, after falling behind and then getting a late winner was important, as we hadn't done that for a while.

We started off a little lacklustre and sluggish. So, by half-time, I think very few people there thought Weston did not deserve to be 1-0 up at half time.

But to show the grit and resilience we did to batter them in terms of chances in the second half was massive.

We started to get the ball in the right areas and then to score two goals in the fashion we did was a big thing for everyone at the club. In terms of the winner, if I'm honest as soon as the ball arrived on Sami's head I gave him a call to nod it across.

I knew being five or six yards out all I had to do was make contact to score as the keeper had to scramble all the way across.

When you score a goal like that in a situation like we are in the emotions just take over.

It was just a combination of elation, relief and also slight happiness that we did not have to travel all the way to Westonsuper-Mare on a Tuesday night.

The next round will see us play Eastbourne Borough away and another rematch with the former gaffer Jamie Howell.

All you want in cup competitions is a game that is winnable.

It's another tie just like Weston where we have already played them.

Similar to Weston we did not give an excellent account of ourselves first time round so we will be looking to do better than this time round.

They will be thinking 'we have already beaten them away, so

can beat them at home'.

It definitely will not be an easy game but it is winnable.

Plus it's another opportunity to get one back over on the old manager. There's no pressure on us, it will be purely on them and Jamie.

The Weston result was also important for the fans.

I think given the run of results we have had they have a right to feel frustrated but I think there is no need to aim that at Jack Pearce.

We as players are the ones who are out there on the pitch who are not delivering. We are the ones who have not been giving enough.

We had a good chat among ourselves at half-time in the Weston game asking ourselves questions such as 'Are we giving everything?'

We then tried to do our talking on the pitch.

I know the fans were not there on Saturday in as huge numbers as they have been.

After the high of getting promoted and then doing well early season, we have been a bit of a shambles in recent weeks, not playing well and not getting the results.

I hope those at the game will think, though, that we did start to show a glimmer and a spark of the old Bognor.

We had grit, character and we played some good football with everyone pulling together towards that same goal.

It's definitely given us something to build on in.

Having no midweek game means that we have been given a much-needed break.

In terms of Gloucester, I don't know much about them. I don't know any of the players and I've never played against them so it will be a bit of a stab in the dark.

I imagine they will be like most other teams in our league - they'll be big, strong, play forward early and be clinical in front of goal.

But if we turn up like we did against Weston in the second half then I think we will go some way to securing all three points.
