Red light for A27 extra time BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MINISTERS have refused extra time to make a decision on the A27. THe rejection for extra time was made after Chichester MP Gillian Keegan held a meeting to ask for an extension over the decision for the future of the A27. As reported in the Post, at the Build
CHICHESTER
a Better A27 meeting in August, Mrs Keegan announced she would be asking the government for more time for the community to work together to come to an agreed approach for the stretch of road, following the cancellation of the scheme earlier this year. A meeting was arranged with Jesse Norman MP, Parliamentary UnderSecretary for Transport and Jim O’Sullivan, chief executive of Highways England,
earlier this month. Mrs Keegan said: "As you know from our recent community meeting, I promised to go back to Government and press for more time for us to develop a scheme for the A27 here in Chichester that we, as a community, could support." At that meeting, Mr Norman confirmed no extra time could be granted due to the restrictions and regulations around Government’s roads investment strategy
investment programme. "THis is disappointing news as we hoped, with more time, that we could agree a way forward for the A27 at Chichester that better reflected the view of our community. We will now be asking the community to consider the two options put forward by Highways England and agree the next steps. THe need for the community to unite is still key to securing funding."
