Hospice pins hope on badges

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW campaign has been launched by St Wilfrid's Hospice to help raise money for their DreamBuilding fund.

THe campaign has been named Pin on a Pansy, with delicate badges created to raise the extra funds to go toward the new hospice in Bosham.

CHICHESTER

Chief executive Alison Moorey said: "We are incredibly grateful to our MP, Gillian Keegan, for coming along to launch the campaign and set us on our way.

"Our pansy appeal is incredibly important and we hope it will appeal to the whole community and take us even closer to our target."

When the hospice opened in 1987, staff cared for 188 patients. Last year, this had

risen to 928 and research shows this is going to increase by at least 17 per cent in the next five years.

THe hospice's services have expanded so the current site in Donnington is no longer fit-for-purpose and the charity are now unable to meet the growing demand for their services.

THe new hospice will be made up of four buildings designed to separate the different services the charity offer,

making it easier for patients and relatives to navigate. THese will be linked together by glazed corridors, with views onto the courtyard garden.

"I am thrilled to say we started on site in July and plan to be open in January 2019," added Alison.

"However, although we have now got to 83 per cent of our target, we still have another £2.6 million to raise.

A SEA Scout leader has been jailed for a series of sexual offences against a young Selsey Sea Scout which happened 20 years ago.

Robert Iskett, 49, a groundsman, of Daisy Fields, Fair Oak, Eastleigh, Hampshire, was sentenced to a total of five and a half years in prison, following a trial.

He will also be a registered sex offender for life.

Iskett was convicted of three offences against the then-teenage boy, while he was leader of a group of Sea Scouts in Selsey in the late 1990s.

He indecently assaulted the boy during a group trip to the West Midlands, and also indecently assaulted and carried out acts of gross indecency with the boy at the address at which Iskett then lived off St Itha Close in Selsey.

At the time of his arrest in November, 2015, Iskett was the District Scout Commissioner in Hampshire.

Upon his arrest, Iskett was immediately suspended from his role and following his conviction he was permanently excluded from the Scout Association.

THe trial and sentencing follows an investigation by West Sussex detectives which began in November, 2015, when the victim came forward on learning that

Iskett was still involved and had a senior role in the Scouting movement.

Detective Constable Erica Lawrie said: "Iskett denied his guilt throughout and the victim had to attend court and give evidence, which the jury clearly found compelling.

"THis case shows once again that we will always take such reports seriously and investigate wherever possible, no matter how long ago the alleged events occurred."

MORE FOOD, cake specialists, has been saved from closing.

Andrew Duncan and Alex Cadwallader, directors at Leonard Curtis Business Solutions Group, were appointed joint administrators to cake makers, More Food Ltd, on September 1.

More Food specialised in the creation and supply of handmade cakes and tray bakes to a wide range of customers, including local bakeries, major retailers, as well as international sandwich shop chains.

More Food was incorporated in 2003.

However, the business had been trading for over 25 years and began when the founding director, Caron Howe, and a close friend started their own coffee shop business in Chichester, which they named ‘Upstairs Downstairs’.

Caron Howe sold the coffee shop business and concentrated on the wholesale supply of cakes, incorporating More Food and taking on a leasehold factory premises in Chichester in 2003.

To support the growing business, the directors decided to move to a new, purposebuilt, 8,000 square feet factory premises in Chichester. THe cost of the move and the fit out of the new premises were substantial and, combined with recent increases in the price of raw materials following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, placed substantial strain on the business.

THe directors were ultimately unable to save the business, which entered into administration on September 1, 2017.

Immediately after the administration, the business and assets of the company were sold as part of a going concern sale to a third party, Sussex Bakes. THe sale will ensure continuity to the company’s customers and has saved the jobs of 150 staff.

Andrew Duncan said: “THe sale of the business ensures the continued employment of all 150 members of staff and means that work at the bakery can continue as it did before under the new ownership of Sussex Bakes.”

Free school principal to move on as it prepares for new home THE principal of Chichester Free School has announced he is leaving.

Guy Martyn, who has been in post since the school began in 2013, will take up a new position as principal of a school in Essex from January.

He said: "I have enormously enjoyed my time as founding principal of Chichester Free School. We have achieved extraordinary things since we started with no premises and no staff, but crucially a strong vision everyone believed in. It's been an exhilarating journey for all of us who have been pioneers in creating this new school for Chichester.

"I will leave the school in a very strong place, with great results at GCSE

this summer and also in primary, and the promised convent site finally due for completion next year.

"Although I will be sad to leave such a great staff team, such wonderful pupils and parents who took the plunge and stuck with us as a brand new school, now is the right time for me to accept a new challenge and for the school to benefit from the different energy a new principal will undoubtedly bring."

One of the school's founders, Jenny Clough, will take over as interim head.

Governors will seek a new principal once staff and pupils are settled into the new site at the former Carmelite convent in Hunston next year.

Farmers reap what they sow

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HUNDREDS of people visited Oldwick Farm to learn about harvesting the old fashioned way.

On Saturday, the first of the two-day annual event, the weather was superb, with people turning out in large numbers to enjoy the warm sunshine.

Visitors also enjoyed the delights of the event which took place in a large wheat field where most of the crop had been harvested to make room for a show ring and plenty of stalls and displays.

During the show in West Stoke, visitors could see the remainder of the wheat crop being harvested using various old fashioned methods.

Children enjoyed the bouncy castle,

having their faces painted, events in the ring and petting the horses. Families with young children seemed to be fascinated with the massive Shire horses, all harnessed up.

Puffing sounds and smoke drew attention to steam traction engines chugging away to drive threshing machines.

Another attraction for families were two shire horses pulling a plough. A number of older generation farmers collected around the horses, keen to talk about and pass on their knowledge of the old ways and methods.

In the show ring, adults were entertained by ancient cars, old military equipment and a fun dog show, while children were thrilled with various challenges, including a tug of war against tractors, to see which team could pull their tractor the furthest.

Get in shape this autumn THE Chichester Wellbeing team is running a new programme of Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops to help residents lose weight, get fit and lead a healthier lifestyle.

THe 12-week programme is designed to help people lose weight and keep it off. THe workshops cover a wide variety of topics from challenging the myths about diets, right through to how stress and lack of sleep may affect weight gain.

Each week the nutritionist works with each individual and takes a detailed look at their eating habits and lifestyle to help them lose weight and get back on track.

THey will run at Westgate Leisure Centre next Tuesday at 7pm and next Wednesday at 10am.

THey will also run at THe Selsey Centre on THursday at 12.15pm and at THe Grange Leisure and Community Centre in Midhurst on Wednesday at 2pm. THe workshops cost £2.50 per week and include a private weekly weigh-in and group discussion. Anyone paying for 10 weeks at the start of the course will receive two weeks free.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “THe idea is to promote gradual weight loss which is healthier and more sustainable for the future. THe groups are small and friendly and excellent value.”

People who join before September 12 will be entered into a draw to win a box of seasonal vegetables and the course.

It reminded me of some letting agents’ promotions. 0 per cent management fees to landlords, free management and free this, free that. All with the caveat that it’s only for a certain timeframe or that other fees apply, making the saving completely redundant.

I feel there is a lack of transparency among some letting agents regarding fees they are charging (to both landlords and tenants).

Even though it is now a legal requirement for letting agents to publish all their fees to both landlords and tenants, many don’t comply. Price on application or fees negotiable by property type is not permissible and contracts should be free of hidden nasties tucked away in the small print.

I believe in the notion of charging a fair and transparent price for a great service and not trying to make a few extra quid in the short-term.

Litter and fly tip plan is approved

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MEMBERS of Chichester District Council's cabinet have approved the litter and fly tip action plan 2017-2019.

THe plan includes approval of £60,000 funded from reserves to enable the appointment of one, full-time equivalent project officer for two years to support work relating to fly tipping.

Also included in the plan is expenditure of £26,000 for resources to support public campaigns and the refurbishment and re-signing of a proportion of litter and dog bins.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for contract services, said: "People might think Chichester is not that bad for litter but that is because we spend so much on it. THis is money we could have spent elsewhere."

Fly tipping has increased from 618 incidents in 2015/16 to 988 in 2016/17.

THe cost clear this in 2015/16 was £52,000, which increased to £75,000 for 2016/17.

"We will introduce fixed fines of £80 for litter and £100 for dog foul," added Cllr Barrow.

"We will work with communities to improve awareness and provide support, recognising achievements."

Environment council officer Alison Stevens said: "THis is more about the publicity and PR than officers on the street.

"If people think they are going to be

fined, then they will be less inclined to drop litter.

"THere is an education message that if you produce the waste you need to ensure it is being disposed of correctly."

Cllr Barrows added: "We want to stress that this is not about money. THe fines are not intended to provide income for the council; they will just pay for the service.

"We will also be using council officers who are trained to deal with this and so it is different to the private services that have been used by other councils elsewhere in the country."

THe trial will involve litter enforcement officers, directly employed by East Hampshire District Council, monitoring the city and fining those who are seen dropping litter or allowing their dog to foul.

It has already had a very positive impact in the neighbouring district areas and it is hoped that it will now send a strong message to the small minority of people who continue to ruin the local environment.

THe council also intends to run a project to encourage tradespeople to prevent litter being dropped from trucks and to make sure that they are properly registered as waste carriers. A recent clear-up of the A27 within the district resulted in 665 bags of litter and 15 small van-loads of car parts being collected.

THe project will campaign for lorries and vans to secure their loads properly because much of the material collected is thought to have been dropped from commercial vehicles.

Duke dies at Goodwood House after suffering a short illness THE Duke of Richmond and Gordon has died at the age of 87, Goodwood Estate has announced.

Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, the 10th Duke of Richmond, died peacefully at Goodwood House, surrounded by his family.

THey confirmed he had suffered a short illness.

In a statement, the Goodwood Estate said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of His Grace THe Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

THe Duke died peacefully at Goodwood on September 1. He was 87.

"THe Duke is succeeded by his son,

Charles, who becomes 11th Duke of Richmond and Gordon. THe funeral, for family only, will take place shortly at Boxgrove Priory. A memorial service will follow later."

THe Duke was born on September 19, 1929. He was educated at Eton from 1944 until 1948.

He married Susan Monica GrenvilleGrey in 1951.

He went on to succeed to Dukedoms of Richmond (England), Lennox (Scotland), Gordon (United Kingdom) and Aubigny (France) on November 2, 1989.

He has four daughters and one son , the Earl of March.

Changes could be made to car parks to reduce traffic

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW way for managing parking in Chichester is being suggested by West Sussex County Council.

For the past two years, officers from the county council and Chichester District Council have been thinking through a new strategy to cope with growing parking demands in the city.

Known as the Chichester Road Space Audit, the strategy will be debated through an online public consultation this month. THe strategy is designed to help realise Chichester District Council’s ‘Chichester Vision’, as well as other transport and economic strategies over the next 20 years.

West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, Bob Lanzer, said: “We have really tried to think outside the box here with this strategy.

“It is estimated by 2029 the number of households in Chichester will grow by 32 per cent, causing 20 per cent more car journeys in and out of the city.

“THat’s why we have to start thinking differently and more radically with regards to our parking strategy.

“I must stress these are only ideas, broad concepts and suggestions at this stage. We just want to gauge public opinion and find out what the city thinks about these ideas.

“THere will be much discussion to be had over the coming months, so please take the time to comment on our online consultation.

“As ever, the more opinions that are shared, the more informed we will be about how to approach parking and road space within Chichester in the future.”

THe suggested strategy incorporates four broad themes, to be completed in consecutive order, which could potentially transform how parking takes place within the city.

THese include changes to on-street parking with a single city wide parking management plan, allowing workers in the city to park in residential streets where there are spaces during the day time.

Some short-stay off-street car parks could be closed to reduce traffic in the city centre and turn other car parks into short stay ones instead.

Road space could be re-allocated to more sustainable modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport to improve the urban area.

Traffic could also be managed away from the city centre to allow greater emphasis on visitor attractions, shopping, restaurants and bars. THe idea is to prevent traffic using Chichester as a through route.

Glimpse into the cathedral CHICHESTER Cathedral is offering the public a rare glance into some historic hidden spaces.

THis comes as part of its’ ‘Behind the Scenes’ celebration on Saturday, September 9, between 1pm - 4pm.

Visitors will be able to gain access to the song school, the cathedral library and the Bishop’s Chapel.

All of these spaces are normally out of bounds to the general public but each offers a valuable insight to the history and workings of this magnificent 900 year old building.

Located high up in the cathedral’s triforium, the song school was originally built in the 15th century for canons to discuss their business affairs.

THe cathedral library holds rare works dating back as far as the 12th century.

THe private chapel of the Bishop of Chichester contains a rare and famous roundel wall-painting dating from the 13th century, known as ‘the Chichester roundel’.

History enthusiasts shouldn’t miss this special opportunity to explore the hidden places of this magnificent building.

All spaces are free and there is no need to book.

Visitors should be aware that the song school and library are accessed by a winding staircase of 40 steps. THe Bishop's Chapel is on ground level and accessed by just a few shallow steps.

Bikes stolen outside library A mother and son have been left without their transport after callous thieves stole their bikes in Chichester.

THe pair's bicycles were stolen despite being secured in order to deter criminals.

Police are investigating the theft of the two pedal cycles from outside the public library in Tower Street.

THe cycles, which had been locked, were stolen between 1.30pm and 3.30pm on Saturday, August 26.

PC Kate Carter of Sussex Police, said: "THe bikes belong to a 15-year-old boy, who used his for a local paper round, and his mother, who used hers to commute to work."

One was a blue-and-black Boardman hybrid bicycle with thin tyres and a distinctive white bulldog sticker on the top bar of the frame. It is

valued at £450.

THe other was a red Felt road bike with drop handlebars, valued at £450.

Alison added: "For me, personally the fact that each pansy pin will contain a tiny amount of soil from this garden gives them particular significance and will always be a memory of the work we do here.

"As we work towards our new hospice it is particularly special to know that we can remember and mark everything that has been achieved on this site in this way."

Timothy Roe Fine Jewellery in Chichester designed and produced the moulds for the pansy pins.

Chris Fisher, the jewellers computeraided designer, came up with the final design. He said: "I copied the picture of a pansy and tried a few ideas and between us we landed on the final design for production.

"Everyone seems really happy with the pins so I'm very pleased."

Owner Timothy Roe had five unique pins created in precious metals and stones which have been kindly donated to St Wilfrid's to be auctioned off.

Chris added: "THere are five special badges which include tsavorite garnett set in palladium, a ruby set in 18ct yellow gold, a brown diamond in 18ct rose gold, a sapphire in 18ct white gold and a white diamond set in platinum.

"THese special pins were made inhouse at our jewellers in Chichester."

Gillian Keegan, Conservative MP for Chichester added: "I spent a day at St Wilfrid's and learnt a little bit more about it and how it worked.

"I am buying a pansy today and I will wear it to Parliament and every time somebody asks me about it, I will tell them about St Wilfrid's.

"A lot of people don't realise the facilities are run from charitable donations and we are very lucky to have St Wilfrid’s.

Boost for communities trying to prevent areas from floods COMMUNITIES across West Sussex have been given funding to prepare themselves against flooding. Six more Operation Watershed applications have been approved to help West Sussex communities prepare themselves against flooding.

West Sussex County Council announced awards totalling £67,343.40 were being made as part of Operation Watershed.

Operation Watershed is a county council fund set up to assist communities who want to make their areas more resilient against the threat of flooding. In return for funding, groups agree to take on responsibility for maintaining and managing their projects afterwards.

Parish and town councils, community groups or voluntary groups are all eligible to apply.

West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, Bob Lanzer, said: “All six of these schemes clearly

demonstrated to us how they would help alleviate surface water or ground water flooding issues.

“Now the fund is truly up and running this year we are receiving more applications and enquiries."

THe West Sussex Association of Local Councils has been given £5,500 towards training parish councils to use Parish Online - an interactive online tool that uses Ordnance Survey and geographical mapping to show data provided by flood authorities of drainage systems, flood zones and areas of flood risk.

Tangmere Parish Council has been given £3,500 towards removing a water main from Marsh Lane bridleway.

Southbourne Parish Council has received £2,810.40 towards repairing Hermitage Stream Banks. St Andrew’s Church in Tangmere has received £2,800 towards surface water drainage.

` Donnington show VISITORS enjoyed an impressive display at Donnington Gardening Club’s Autumn Show on Saturday, September 2 In spite of yet another difficult year, with weather conditions creating a number of problems, the wide variety of items presented an absorbing show.

THe rich hues of autumnal flowers blended well with the colours of sweetcorn, aubergine, tomatoes and grapes.

Tasty sponges, cakes, bread and preserves were included in the home produce section, together with colourful photographs, delicate embroidery and knitting in the handicraft class.

After tea and cakes, an auction and raffle were held.

Prize winners included Brain Turbefield for fruit and veg, Christine Coombes for home produce and Ann Holloway for handicraft and photography.

All change for museum as boss leaves for new venture THE manager of Chichester's Novium Museum, Cathy Hakes, is leaving the museum this month.

She will take on the new role of visitor experience manager at Petworth House.

In her four years at the Novium, the museum has made great strides to become a much loved and well visited heritage attraction.

Central to this has been the focus on audience development and the visitor experience, leading to a host of local, regional and national awards.

Most recently, the Tim Peake exhibition which was devised and curated by Cathy in partnership with Nigel Peake and the European Space Agency, won the highly prestigious Best Temporary Exhibition 2017 at the National Museum and Heritage Awards - following in the impressive footsteps of the previous year’s winner, the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the V&A. THis year the Novium is on target to attract over 60,000 visitors, the highest number ever.

THis new-found popularity and footfall has also enabled the museum team to help secure the museum's future through increased revenue generation, with retail, the Chichester box office and weddings at the Guildhall all proving highly successful.

Under Cathy's tenure, the museum team have attracted major grant funding from the Arts Council and Heritage Lottery Fund, and it has hosted a range of cultural events and exhibitions for

Chichester, ranging from Chichester Roman Week to the Sir Admiral Murray exhibition. THe Tim Peake exhibition, in particular, has attracted visitors from all over the country and, significantly, from overseas, bringing many new visitors to Chichester.

Cathy is an ardent advocate of the role that museums can play in our cultural

and social wellbeing and also cites the significance of heritage attractions such as the Novium to the local economy.

A recent report published in August by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has provided further evidence for the positive impact of museums, heritage sites and other cultural assets on local economies across

England.

Reflecting on the success of the Novium during the past four years, Cathy said: "As a leading Chichester visitor attraction, the Novium plays not only a crucial role in preserving our cultural heritage but is also increasingly a key asset to our local economy, and I look forward to watching it go from strength to strength."

Kath's Ducks go quackers for foamtastic fun to raise funds for hospice GENEROUS family and friends of a Bognor Regis woman have raised over £2,000 for her much-needed care.

Kath Tanswell, pictured middle right, attended the second annual Bubble Rush in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice to present an impressive cheque and watch loved ones take part in the foamy fun run.

Kath, 66, has been receiving care from the St Wilfrid's Hospice at Home team.

Alongside her family and friends at the event last Saturday were her co-workers from Tesco in Bognor Regis, where she had worked for an impressive 25 years.

The team at Tesco raised £1,000 in store thanks to the staff and customers. This, combined with sponsorship collected by

Among Kath’s colleagues watching the event was Buster Hall. He explained how Kath’s team were given their name.

He said “Kath calls everyone at Tesco ‘duck’ so that’s how she’s known and why they’ve called themselves ‘Kath’s Ducks’.

“She’s a fantastic, wonderful lady and we can’t do enough for her.”

Buster started fundraising for the hospice by dressing up as Batman and asking for donations. Eventually lots of his co-workers joined the cause.

“Everyone at Tesco wanted to help and the idea just took off,” he added.

f Enjoying some foamy fun family and friends, saw a total raised of £2,200 by Kath’s supporters.

The Tesco customer services worker spoke of her gratitude for those involved.

She said: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from my family, friends and colleagues.”

Seven of Kath’s family and friends took part in the Bubble Rush, a four kilometre run through coloured foam - sons Glen and Lee Tanswell, grandchildren Megan and Josh Tanswell, son-in-law Scott Hughes, future daughter-in-law Tracy Lowry and friend Ruby Paluk.

Scott enjoyed the experience. He said: “It was hard, but fun. And now we’ve just been having fun watching others finish the race from here.”

Alison Moorey, the hospice’s chief executive and chairman of trustees, was there to accept the donation from the supermarket.

She explained how important the money, as well as the gesture, was to both Kath and the hospice.

She said: “It is a true testament to how much Kath is appreciated by her colleagues and customers at Tesco.

“The money will be put to good use helping to provide end of life care for people, including support for their loved ones.”

Alison took part twice in the run, raising sponsorship from her friends and family.

“It’s been a fantastic, fun day. We’ve

had lots of children and families taking part.

"We couldn’t have asked for better weather. The kids are really engaging with the bubbles, lots of them go back for more.

“I’ve done one lap already and I’m going to do it again. I’ve raised £175 from sponsorship so far,” she said.

The event attracted up to 600 participants who took part in the two races.

Live music from Station 47 and The Miller Men entertained everyone while face painting, massages and food were also on offer.

To get people geared up for the run, a warm-up was provided by FitJoy. All the companies involved gave their time and services for free, including Chichester High School as the venue and Southdowns Water.

The hospice’s communications officer, Helen Humphry, thanked all those involved.

“Everyone has really got into the spirit.

There are so many families here, and the children are really enjoying it.

"There are also a lot of people running in memory of loved ones which is very touching.”

Bognor Regis participant Melanie Thomas ran in memory of her dad, Wynne Thomas.

This was her first Bubble Rush.

She was joined by her friends, Val Lewis, who was taking part for her dad, Ron Coulson, and Jo Boylin, running in memory of her mum, Susan Crank.

Although Wynne was under the hospice's care years ago, Melanie has still continued to help it.

There were also plenty of participants there for the fun factor.

Nine-year-old Bailey NortonGiffiths, from Worthing, explained why he signed up.

“I wanted to do it because it sounded fun. I’ve really enjoyed jumping in the bubbles,” he said.

For Margaret Sutton, from Bognor Regis, the day was a family affair as she was joined by her two grandchildren.

She said: “I wanted to help the hospice and my grandchildren said they’d do it with me which is really nice.”

Her grandson, six-year-old Elliott Ribbons, said: “I’m very excited for the bubbles.”

His sister Katy Ribbons, aged ten, agreed. “I’m looking forward to getting in the foam,” she said.

` Memorial service A SERVICE to dedicate a new memorial to the wartime role of Bognor Regis Pier will be held at the end of this month.

The Royal Naval Association has arranged the occasion to ensure the memory of HMS St Barbara is kept alive. The naval base was a Second World War gunnery training school on the pier.

Its memorial is being replaced on the front of the pier after being sited at the rear of the building since last year.

The service to officially unveil the new memorial will take place at 12.15pm on September 30.

Ron Hargest, chairman of the Royal Naval Association in the town, said: "An open invitation is extended to anyone who would like to attend the service.

"There will also be a flypast before the service, featuring helicopters from Elite Helicopters and Second World War aircraft from Boultbee Flying Academy."

The flypast is scheduled to take place at 12.10pm.

Those at the service will include Commander Michael Dreelan, the commanding officer of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, and civic dignitaries.

Also present will be Bognor Regis Sea Cadets from TS Sir Alec Rose, and former servicemen and women from the town's branches of the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Air Forces Association and the Royal British Legion and representatives from Reynolds in Bognor Regis.

The original memorial was instigated by the late Leslie Garrett.

CREATIVE brains behind Star Wars and Levi’s will be bringing their expertise to Bognor Regis.

The design experiences of some of the industry’s top experts have been lined up for the next sessions of a unique course held in the town.

The Strohacker Design School is based at the university campus and its principal claims it is unlike any other.

Bill Strohacker said: “I challenge anyone to tell me a course in the UK which has as many top end creative individuals involved with it as this design school.

“These people are part of the course and they bring their expertise to help the students.”

New for the second of the three-month courses which starts will be input from Glyn Dillon, the creative director for Lucasfilm, the box office giant that creates the Star Wars movies.

“He called me up to be part of the course because he liked what we are doing,” said Bill. “He is likely to be here in November.”

Also taking part will be Nick Williams, the former creative director for Levi’s, and John McFaul, who heads the design work for the New Balance sportswear company.

They will take along their firms’ recent design briefs for the students to work on in a life-like setting.

“The students will have two weeks to complete a brief,” said Bill. “That makes it more realistic than on many courses where they can be given six weeks.

“It also fits in with the intense, shortterm nature of the course. It’s only three months long and the aim is to equip the students with all they need to get a job.

“We will support our students as well for six months after they leave. Our aim is for them to be in work within that time. We’re at a 90 per cent success rate so far.”

Backing for the course also comes from Jamie Hewlett, who is touring with his virtual band, Gorillaz, which he helped to take to the top of the music charts.

He and Bill are former students of Northbrook College in Worthing. Bill, 55, set up his course at the University of Chichester site after decades of working as a graphic designer.

He designed Smash Hits magazine and worked for Virgin before he spent two years researching the industry talking to design agencies and graduate students about what they needed and what they were missing from existing courses.

He met with a representative of the university at a networking event and his deal to rent space to operate as an independent education provider was agreed.

Contacts with his former classmates, and former work colleagues soon set up enough award-winning designers willing to get involved.

Only six students a time take part. Those on the latest course come from southeast England. The initial course had two American students.

“Graphic design is still very important,” said Chichester resident Bill. “Every physical object we see has been designed by somebody and that starts at school when a student becomes enthused by the subject.”

One of his goals as his course becomes established is to work with companies to offer scholarships towards the £6,995 fee.

“I want to offer as many people as possible the chance to get into this industry. It worries me that creative activities are being taken out by schools.

"We need to put the STEAM into STEM (science, technology, engineering ,maths) to ensure the arts are included," he added.

Video star Riley helps make people aware of syndrome A BOGNOR REGIS family of a little boy with a rare genetic disorder has been chosen to front a national charity campaign.

Riley Pearson, six, has Smith Magenis Syndrome, to mean he has severe behavourial problems. Along with his dad, Mick, he has become the face of the fundraising bid by Jeans for Genes.

The online campaign #dreamsforgenes aims to encourage schools on September 22 to sign for up for Jeans for Genes Day when pupils wear jeans in exchange for a small donation to the charity.

The short video by Riley and Mick, 39, raises awareness around the syndrome and genetic disorders generally.

Mick explains: "Our dream for genes is that SMS can become more socially acceptable and that more awareness is spread throughout public places - so people understand more in schools, hospitals, doctors or even Tesco's.

"Riley is just gorgeous and is often a very happy little boy. We all adore him.

"However, if he gets over stimulated, that leads to a tantrum or, in a worse case, a meltdown.

"Riley will throw things, hit out at us and run screaming around. This is when people tend to look and judge us.

"He can start self-injurious behaviour biting himself, pinching himself. It is hard enough dealing with Riley and worrying about him.

"So, when people give you nasty looks like you are bad parents - well that is just something we don't really need."

Riley was diagnosed on December 4, 2014, when he was three years old.

Doctors initially said he had Global Developmental Delay because he had missed all his milestones.

But rail track quality worker Mick said:

"We just knew there was more to it. We have three older sons, so we are qualified parents."

It took three weeks for the results of a genetic test on Riley to come back. Mick and his wife, Sue, a part-time health care worker, felt totally abandoned.

The doctor who saw them knew nothing about the condition. It was only when Mick found out about the SMS Foundation the family received support.

Riley lives with his parents, Sue's mum,

Pauline, 71, and his three older brothers, Ethan Ling, 16, Joshua Ling, 15, and Brandon Pearson, 13.

"The boys are brilliant with Riley. His condition affects the whole family on a daily basis but they adore him," said Mick.

"They knew when they need to leave him alone and they all just think the world of him. The other side to Riley is just gorgeous. He is so loving and happy."

` New markets FAMILIES will be able to buy good quality children's items at a new market in North Bersted.

Little Pickles Markets is being launched this Sunday at Bersted Park Community Centre in Lakeland Avenue.

The markets were started in October, 2010, by busy mum of five Jessamine Hislop when she realised the need to sell articles for children in indoor venues.

She said: "I was having a good clear-out of my children's items to raise some extra cash but getting very frustrated by selling online and at early car boots and I felt like I was almost giving away quality items that still had loads of life left in them."

Goods on sale include maternity wear to pushchairs, games, toys and nursery furniture.

PLANS to keep a marquee for three more years at an Eastergate pub have been revealed.

Sonia Scott has sought planning permission to retain the structure at Wilkes Head Inn for three years.

Her planning agent, Stephen Jupp, says in a statement: "The scale of the marquee is such that it is subordinate to both the main building and the single-storey side extension. It has a low-pitched roof in order to ensure that it is not a dominant feature."

The 18th century pub is a Grade II listed building. The marquee, with 124 sq m of floorspace, has been on its western end for six years.

Families go ape for fun with giant gorilla AWE-INSPIRED crowds gathered at Aldingbourne Country Centre to meet a ten foot tall creature of legend.

King Kong visited last Thursday and impressed both children and adults alike.

During the day, up to 100 visitors were given the option of six 20 minute time slots in which to get up close and personal with the human-operated ape.

For organisers it was exciting to see King Kong arrive as the day was the largest event they had arranged this summer.

Enterprise and development team leader Debbie Wells explained the importance of the day to end the centre's packed programme of summer activities.

She said: "This is our main fundraising annual event. All the money raised today goes straight back into the trust to help support people with learning

disabilities.

"We haven't really done an event this big before."

Jen Sears, the events manager with the trust, agreed.

"We started hosting events five years ago because funding for these sorts of projects was cut.

"With all our events, the aim is to raise awareness but with big ones like this we hope to make as much money as possible for the trust.

"It's great that the people we support are able to work upfront with the visitors.

They love it and it gives children the chance to meet them and understand learning difficulties more.

"What we want is to be part of the community," she said.

King Kong was provided by Area 51, an entertainments company, and was operated by two men alternately between slots.

For Adam Colclough, being inside the suit proved warm on the summer's day.

He said: "It's a lot of work and is very hot in here but it's been lovely."

His colleague, Craig Rocks, was there as Kong's keeper. To coax Kong out into public Craig asked families to shout 'Kong!' three times.

He said: "It's been really good. The kids have been a mix of scared and excited.

"There was one little boy who wanted to fight Kong!"

Many of the children there were thrilled to have met the giant creature.

Maddox Matthews, aged four, from

West Wittering, said: "He was good, I didn't find him scary. I wanted to feed him a banana. He was fluffy like a puppy."

His friend, Ethan Ryan, also aged four, agreed: "He's good. I got to touch him."

Ethan's mum, Jo, explained that they visit the centre regularly.

She said: "We come here all the time, it's fantastic.

"I was surprised by how big King Kong was."

Seven-year-old Lily Argle was also surprised by the scale of Kong.

"I like him. He made me jump when he first came out. He's very big," she said.

Lily was there with her great aunt and uncle, Heather and James Honeyman.

Heather admitted Kong was scary. She said: "He frightened me at first. He's very soft though."

Also there to meet Kong were some of the people supported by the trust.

Ellie Cooper, 25, from Billingshurst, was pleased to be involved.

"Kong's a bit spooky but he's OK. The kids are enjoying it. I've heard a lot of them say 'wow'.

"I love these events. They make me go home feeling proud," she said.

Forty-seven-year-old John Murrell, from Bognor Regis, was of the same mindset. He said: "All our events go very well and people have fun."

Chichester resident Vicky Mearns, 34, made sure she took plenty of photographs, pictured far left.

"It's been really good. It's a bit scary when he comes in close though," she said.

Unique student rooms open STUDENTS have been banned from bringing cars to their unique accommodation in Bognor Regis.

The Villa Maria scheme of 14 studio apartments and three four-bed cluster flats is believed to be a first for the town.

The 26 occupiers of the mixture of newly-built and converted properties developed by Fresh Invest moved in on Sunday.

Their leases specifically rule out having vehicles with them during their time in the Campbell Road property.

One of the company’s directors said having car-free rooms made sense. “This is the way student accommodation is going,” said Danny Gray.

“This is a town centre location and it would be totally unfair for the students to have cars and add to the congestion on the roads.

“The university campus is a fiveminute walk away and this is close to the bus route to Chichester and the local shops.

“There is no need for anyone who

lives here to have a car. If they want a car, they will have to find alternative accommodation, but it will be further away from the campus.”

Another of the conditions was the need for 24-hour management of the accommodation and Mr Gray said he accepted the concerns of the 11 households who had objected to the plans.

“I fully understand the views of residents. The history of student accommodation is of a lot of unmanaged

houses in multiple occupation miles away from the campus. That’s not right for a residential area and for elderly couples and families to find themselves surrounded by students,” he said.

“But this scheme shows the way the market is moving – managed and close to the university, which should be the focus of the students’ time here.”

Villa Maria, in Campbell Road, had been a convent since the late 1970s.

The nuns were looking to move when the building was put up for sale for £650,000.

Fresh Direct spent a further sixfigure sum from last February on the building work and conversion as well as equipping the en-suite rooms to a high standard.

All the apartments and flats were snapped up within a month of being released by students whose homes are mostly within a two to three hour drive.

Mr Gray said the development was a sign of changing times in Bognor Regis.

"All of us involved in the company live locally and we have seen how the university have been growing over the past few years,” he said. “Having looked at the provision of accommodation in Bognor Regis, it made sense to consider developing in this area.

“Bognor Regis is becoming more of a student town. We have student accommodation in Portsmouth and Southampton and the universities have brought those cities up.

“It would be good if Bognor Regis went the same way. The expansion of the University of Chichester’s campus in the town can bring a lot of economic benefit to the town and get it buzzing like those cities and others around the country.”

` Pensions meetings WOMEN fighting for better pensions have held meetings in Chichester and Bognor Regis this week.

Members of the Bognor and Chichester South Coast group of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) staged the sessions to gather more interest to their cause.

Jill Robertson, Waspi's area coordinator, said: "Our listed number now number just over 100. It has been a steady rise.

"Unison are now helping with a section for Waspi on their main website. We are still hearing stories of women that just don't have any idea."

Waspi is campaigning against the speed at which the government is increasing the women's state pension age from 60 to 66 to match the age for men on the way to further increases in future decades.

The first meeting took place on Tuesday at Crispins Cafe in East Street in Chichester. The second was at the Scout Hall in Middleton last night.

"We are promoting that women should contact the Department for Work and Pensions with complaints about the maladministration of how the changes have been handled," added Jill.

` Drugs haul in town A MAN was arrested in Bognor Regis town centre this week in possession of a large amount of illegal drugs.

The man was caught by Sussex Police on Wednesday in Queensway after he was found to have a quantity of crack cocaine and heroin on him.

He was released by the police while the matter is under investigation.

Builders' baking skills to help hospices' work f Having fun in North Bersted in the summer

Summer goes on until September SUMMER fun stretched into this month for lucky children in North Bersted.

They were able to enjoy an extra day of the annual play scheme at Jubilee Fields off Chalcraft Lane.

Bersted Parish Council arranged with the play providers for the additional session last Friday to make up for bad weather earlier in the school holiday.

Parish council clerk Debbie Holcombe said: "The day has been really popular and has gone very well.

"There's a huge slide, bouncy castle and zorbing for the children to enjoy.

"On Tuesday, the playing field was really packed with families who stayed all day.

"It's impossible to give numbers but you could tell there were a lot of people here because of the amount of noise and activity."

The sessions also continued until last Friday morning, as planned, off Bronze Close in the Trees Estate.

They began on July 31 and were the latest of the annual play schemes to be staged by the parish council for families in its area.

Those on the Jubilee Fields were weekly, those off Bronze Close three times a week and twice-weekly at the village green in Bersted Park.

"We like to give something to our local families to enjoy during the summer and this is our way of doing that," added Mrs Holcombe.

A BUILDERS' bake off will be one of the fundraising ideas a Bognor Regis and Chichester company is staging next week to help hospices.

Covers timber and builders' merchants is aiming to raise more than £30,000 to support hospices across the south east.

They will include St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester and Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice in Arundel.

The firm's third help for hospices week is being staged from Monday to Friday.

One of the activities will see volunteers from the two hospices join Covers staff at their Station Yard depot in Bognor Regis

for a builders' bake off to sell a delicious array of homemade cakes and biscuits.

Rupert Green, chairman of Covers, said: "We're delighted once again to be raising money for such a fantastic cause.

"Here at Covers we pride ourselves on offering support to the local community.

"I look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to the bake off and to announcing the total amount raised for our third Help for Hospices week in October."

The generous company has pledged £20,000 of its money to kick-start the campaign and to encourage others to get

involved.

Each registered customer who makes a purchase from the company during next week will also trigger a £5 donation.

Raffle tickets are also on sale at all Covers' depots across the south east until September 29. The great prizes include a £500 Covers' home improvements voucher. Tickets for the raffle cost £1 each or £10 for a book of ten.

Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in Sussex.

Over the course of the event, visitors will also come face to face with the crew of The Mermaid and hear spine-tingling tales of their exploits in Arundel, throughout Sussex and on the high seas.

EVERY little helps, apparently, so, with that slogan in mind, I ventured into Tesco's to ascertain which offers I could unearth. My first white wine selection is not currently on offer, but is good value for £7 and is a summer sensation in the form of a Tesco finest Les Costières De Poméroles Picpoul De Pinet of 2016 vintage.

Picpoul is the grape and Picpoul De Pinet the small appellation in the Languedoc region of Southern France located between Pézenas and Sète and it is worthy of note that the literal translation of Picpoul is 'lip-stinger' on account of its refreshing nature. Pear and apple fruit flavours abound with a slight spritz and lemony zing and this wine will become a firm favourite at late summer and early autumn parties!

My next selection for an offer price of £7 50 is a Mud House 2016 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc proving to be very fruity and vibrant on the palate, oozing citrus fruit and passion fruit and one to serve well chilled - the long refreshing finish is memorable!

Next choice, a line reduced to clear and, according to my Tesco receipt, on

offer at just over £6 is a scrumptious Sieur d' Arques Première Bulle Rosé of 2014 vintage, a sparkling rosé wine from the region of Blanquette de Limoux in France made from chenin, mauzac and chardonnay grapes and proving to be very dry, delightfully refreshing with raspberry on the nose and jolly nice bubbles!

An enchanting fun little number to regale your palate! My diversion this week involves displacement to a Tesco Express shop where I espied a Tesco's finest 2016 Pouilly Fumé curiously reduced to £9.60, so I felt compelled to purchase two bottles

thereof and noted the cleanliness on the palate, fine balanced acidity and lingering after-taste coupled with gooseberry and citrus flavours and a hint of flint!

Reverting to mainstream Tesco's, my selection in the red section includes a Ca'Marrone Rosso IGT Puglia Appassimento of 2015 vintage priced alluringly at a mere £6.50.

This Italian gem is rich and complex oozing blackcurrant and dried fruits and secondary notes followed with leather, tobacco and spice with a hint of chocolate in the after-taste.

Flavoursome, along with a fragrant nose, this wine exemplifies the quality of modern-day Italian wines and is thus my unequivocal wine of the week! At £7.50, the Tesco finest 2016 Saint-Chinian is a wine from southern France's Languedoc Roussillon wine region, located between Minervois and Faugères, producing robust red wines and this one from syrah and grenache grapes is a cosy red which is both mellow and brambly and has a good

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 6 skinless chicken breast fillets, cubed • 4 tablespoons white wine (optional) • 2 medium leeks, chopped • 15g butter • 1 tablespoon plain flour • 750ml milk • 1 cube chicken stock • salt and pepper, to taste • 1 (500g) block puff pastry, thawed if frozen

Equally priced at £7.50 is the 2016 Tesco's finest Mendoza Malbec which exudes blackberry and plum flavours with a subtle hint of spice and could be your regular autumnal tipple.

My ultimate selection is the 2012 Baron De Ley Rioja Reserva which has good structure and soft tannins and boasts dark fruit flavours, spice and hints of vanilla, on offer at £10 and justifying its price tag!

1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a frying pan until hot. Cook chicken until brown all over. Set aside.

2. Using the same pan, heat the remaining oil and add the wine, if using, add the leeks and cook and stir until the leeks are tender and the wine has evaporated. Set aside.

3. Melt butter in a large pot.

Stir in the flour to create a

smooth paste. Gradually add the milk, stirring continuously until sauce thickens.

4. Add chicken and leeks to the pot and crumble in the stock cube and season.

Cover and simmer over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, line a 23cm x 30cm or similar size tin with puff pastry. Fill with chicken and leek mixture and cover with a layer of puff pastry. (At this stage, you can brush the top with egg, if desired).

6. Bake in a preheated 200 C / Gas 6 oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until pastry is puffy and golden. Remove from the oven and serve.

INGREDIENTS • 2 eggs • 250ml vegetable oil • 400g caster sugar • 275g plain flour • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 500g cored, peeled and diced apple

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Lightly grease and flour a 20x30cm cake tin.

2. Beat vegetable oil and eggs until foamy. Add the sugar, flour, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda, salt and vanilla; mix well.

Protecting your immune system to regain health LIVING with an autoimmune disease can be a lonely experience. Many people wait years to find out why they're sick, and once they're finally diagnosed, they receive few options from their medical health carer, which can leave a patient feeling depressed and even helpless.

The problem with some mainstream care, is an outdated model that treats your body like a machine with separate parts. You're diagnosed with a disease, and it's matched with a corresponding medication.

If you can't be diagnosed, you're often labelled as depressed and given an anti depressant.

You're referred from specialist to specialist: gastroenterologists, endocrinologists and rheumatologists, and given more drugs, namely immunosuppressants or steroids.

In reality, your body is a complex, interconnected web of brilliant biochemistry. There are no magic pills, and unfortunately, the more medication that a person is receiving, the more side effects can occur.

I am not saying for one moment that medication does not work in some cases, but the body has an incredible way of healing itself, given the right tools to work with.

The epidemic rise in autoimmune conditions in my eyes, is getting scarily out of control. I see it more and more in my clinics, and often people wait to see someone like me, for years.

My view is to jump on any symptoms you are experiencing as soon as possible. Do not delay, because you don’t even necessarily need a diagnosis. Treating the symptoms is the only way forward.

Autoimmune conditions often start with a

our immune systems and regain our health. Here are some great tips to start taking your health back into your own hands and reclaiming your life: 1. Keep your gut happy: Your gut is where the majority of your immune system resides. When your gut's protective lining is compromised, it can give rise to an autoimmune response throughout your body. Looking after your digestion, taking probiotics and eating plenty of raw foods to increase your enzyme activity is vitally important.

2. Keep your immune system strong: It's no joke that you need to eat your greens! They are full of iron and protein and you need them in abundance every day. Exercise, healing herbs and a healthy mind set are all key to good health. Avoid sugar and process foods at all costs. This in turn will help the body's natural detoxification process.

3. Add green tea and turmeric into your diet: These foods have been shown to dampen the autoimmune response in the body, especially the brain. Turmeric I talk about all the time, and its an incredible anti inflammatory herb as well as being one of natures immune boosters.

4. Avoid refined table salt: Table salt is said to aggravate and increase some autoimmune conditions. So avoid putting it on your food, and avoid foods with it in - Always read labels.

5. Manage stress: It's no surprise that chronic stress is like fuel for an autoimmune condition. Many of my patients even noticed the onset of their condition to have first appeared during very stressful life events.

This is now known not to be strictly true, however, science takes into account the field of epigenetics, or the lifestyle and environmental factors that instruct your genes how to be expressed.

The foods you eat or don't eat, the nutrients you are taking or not taking, your stress levels, sleep habits and exposure to toxins are dynamically determining how your body is going to function. So instead of viewing genetics as an immutable verdict on your life, we have to take into consideration how these epigenetic factors are turning on and off good and bad genes.

When it comes to autoimmune conditions, once that genetic switch has been turned on, it doesn't turn off again. With that said, the autoimmune response can be dampened and reversed tremendously, naturally. It's up to us to modulate

Community News & Views Sir The A27 plans for the Arundel bypass lack vision and residents' voices have been ignored.

Highways England's decision-making processes are consistently confounding: the purple route solution put forward by the people of Arundel has been disregarded in favour of serving up the same reheated options that have long since passed their sell-by dates.

The rehashed plans will cause untold environmental damage to our beautiful South Downs National Park and exacerbate an already alarming air quality crisis.

More than that, a new dual-carriageway is destined to fail on its own terms. Every option on the table will bring more cars to the area and increase congestion. If you sow roads, you reap traffic.

That the Conservative government persists with an outdated infrastructure agenda that unquestionably casts 'car as king' and proposes 'build more roads' as the solution to every transport issue, whatever the cost, is dumbfounding.

Invested wisely in sustainable public transport, walking and cycling alternatives, the money currently set aside for A27 expansion could be used to genuinely improve the quality of life for people in Arundel and the surrounding area.

What we have now, sadly, is a consultation that lacks vision and I stand with local campaigners in calling for a re-think and a re-run - with the addition of long-term, sustainable options.

TABLE TENNIS player Basil Boxall has proved age is no barrier. Bognor Regis team member Basil has received an award from the South West Sussex Table Tennis League to recognise his achievement of playing in its matches for more than 70 years.

Basil, 87, began to play in the league in the 1940s and has competed in every season since - apart from the two years he spent on his national service.

The amazing feat was recognised with the Chairman's Award at the league's annual meeting. Basil, pictured above left, was presented with the trophy by league chairman Chris Newberry.

Flying the flag for youth at the meeting was Nathan White, of Arundel Table Tennis Club, who was awarded the Most Improved Junior Player recognition for the 2016/17 season for his performances in Division Two. Nathan and his team-mate, Rylie Leonnard, also received medals for winning the league's 2016 Summer League competition.

The Arundel club's first team - Mike White, Ivan Gardner and Adam Corell - were presented with the trophy for winning Division One, with North Mundham TTC's first team (Chris Newberry, Peter Baldwin and Jarek Klamut) picking up the runners-up award.

Eastergate II (Alan Brackenbury, Peter Crosby and Darren Wadey) received the trophy for winning Division Two. The league is accepting entries for players who would like to compete in its 2017/18 season, which starts early next month.

Players of all levels of ability are welcome. Beginners are encouraged to join a local club which can provide help with playing and finding a team.

OLD FRIENDSHIPS were renewed when residents of a Chichester home enjoyed the chance to attend a church service.

Those who live in Marriott House and Lodge were invited to the service, held by the Chichester Anna Chaplaincy at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Bosham.

The chaplaincy is supported by many of Chichester's churches and it provides spiritual support to older people as well as their families and carers.

A spokeswoman for the home said: "The whole service was so well organised and our residents and staff really felt part of it.

"One resident managed to meet some of his old friends who he attended church with many years ago.

"This has meant that they have been able to arrange for them to visit him in the home.

FORMER Weald & Downland Living Museum director Richard Pailthorpe will be the speaker at the next meeting of Chichester Probus Club.

Mr Pailthorpe will talk about the rescued traditional rural buildings, pictured above, set in 40 acres of the beautiful landscape of the South Downs National Park.

He will tell stories of some of the men, women and children who lived and worked in them. The meeting will take

THREE stretches of coastline across West Sussex have been included in the latest work on the England Coastal Path.

Natural England has announced work has begun on every area of the path to create the world's longest continuous coastal trail.

In West Sussex, the stretches which feature in the project are South Hayling in Hampshire to East Head, East Head to Shoreham and Shoreham to Eastbourne in East Sussex.

Ramblers' volunteers are working with Natural England to discuss the best route the coastal path should take for those areas.

Nicky Philpott, the Ramblers director of advocacy and engagement, said last Friday: "This is a huge milestone in the story of the England Coast Path and one we should all celebrate.

"Building sandcastles on the beach, dipping toes in the sea and taking a stroll along clifftops are favourite activities that cross generations and bring us all together.

"So, it might surprise you that, until recently, a third of England's coastline was inaccessible.

"The Ramblers has long dreamed of a country where everyone can freely enjoy our beautiful coast, so we were pleased that, after years of campaigning, work started on the England Coastal Path in 2010."

Natural England has been working with landowners, local authorities and others to open up stretches of the path.

Ramblers' volunteers have worked tirelessly to walk and survey swathes of coast, mapping out the best route for walkers.

"We'd like to thank our wonderful volunteers who have spent hours exploring possible routes for the path. Using their local knowledge and thinking with their feet, they are helping to ensure that the England Coast Path is not just a path but one of the most incredible walking trails in the world," said Nicky.

The government hopes to complete the coast path by 2020. At almost 3,000 miles long, the path will stretch around the entire English coastline.

Not only will it open up new paths, it will create new areas of open access land so people can freely explore headlands, cliffs and beaches, right up to the water's edge.

Ramblers are keen to ensure plans are put in place to maintain the path once it is completed and has become a national trail.

YOUNG talent will have its time to shine in Bognor Regis at this year's Southdowns Folk Festival.

As part of the festival, aspiring folk musicians as well as school children will have a chance to perform during the four-day event.

Musicians aged between eight and 21 are encouraged to take part in the Sussex Young Folk competition and students from various primary schools in the area will be singing at the Alexandra Theatre.

As part of the Schools Link projects, students from St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Nyewood CE Junior School and Rose Green Junior School among others will come together on September 23 at 1.45pm to perform as choirs at the Alexandra Theatre.

Approximately 150 children aged between seven and nine years are expected to take part. Tickets to watch this concert cost ÂŁ5.

The following day, the popular Sussex Young Folk competition invites young folk and roots musicians to share their song covers or original compositions with audiences. Participants can be soloists, duos or bands.

The winner, such as last year's Anouska - pictured above, will receive a new guitar and the opportunity to perform a 20 minute set that evening at the Alexandra Theatre as the support act for folk singer Richard Digance.

Sussex Day is celebrated after influence of Richard, Bishop of Chichester until 1253

By Lorna Still, volunteer at The Novium Museum RICHARD, Bishop of Chichester from 1245 until 1253, was considered a saint even in his lifetime, and his tomb in St Edmund’s chapel in the cathedral soon became a place of pilgrimage.

THe new Bishop and Canons wanted Richard canonised and they were supported in this, perhaps surprisingly, by Henry III, with whom Richard had so often been at odds.

Pope Urban IV declared Richard a saint in January, 1262, and his Feast Day was to be April 3, the day of his death.

He was a popular saint in Sussex, Dover, Droitwich (his birthplace) and some places in France.

On June 16, 1276, Richard’s body was moved (‘translated’) to an ornate shrine behind the high altar in the presence of Henry’s son Edward I and Queen Eleanor. Richard’s head was enshrined separately in the chapel of St Mary Magdalen.

Many miracles were attributed to St Richard and recounted in Friar Ralph Bocking’s biography of him.

He is said to have cured a paralysed laundress called Maud in Bignor and multiplied beans to feed starving people in Cakeham (near West Wittering).

Also in Cakeham, his candle relit itself when all others were blown out during a procession.

Fishermen at Lewes, who had had no luck, caught four mullet after Richard blessed them.

In Chichester, Richard healed a crippled boy by getting him to drink from a cup given to him by St Edmund.

THe most well-known miracle, however, is not mentioned in Friar Ralph’s biography.

It is said that Richard, tired and ill, was celebrating Mass and dropped the chalice containing consecrated wine.

blood, was spilled.

THis is why St Richard is often depicted with a chalice at his feet.

THe pilgrimages stopped in November, 1538, when the shrine was destroyed (as were many others in the country) on the orders of Henry VIII. THe valuables were taken and Richard’s remains were lost.

THe 19th century saw a revival of interest in the Middle Ages and in St Richard.

In 1894 a statue of St Richard by Harry Hems was placed in St Richard’s Porch, an entrance Richard himself would have used.

In the early 20th century, the ‘Prayer of St Richard’ was published, although only the first two lines were recorded by Friar Ralph.

THe most famous lines are ‘May I know THee more clearly, Love THee more dearly, And follow THee more nearly’.

THese lines were used in the musical ‘Godspell’.

In 1930, an altar was placed on the site of the destroyed shrine and in 1953, the 700th anniversary of Richard’s death, ‘THe Acts of St Richard’ were performed outside the Bishop’s Palace.

In 1985, the ‘Anglo-German Tapestry’, by Ursula Benker –Schirmer, was installed in front of a new altar which replaced the one put there in 1930.

THis tapestry commemorates aspects of St Richard’s life and celebrates the friendship between English and German churches.

In the 1990's, an authenticated relic of St Richard (possibly from St Richard’s arm) was found in the Abbey of La Lucerne in Normandy and interred beneath St Richard’s altar.

A statue of St Richard by Philip Jackson was placed near the West Door of the cathedral to celebrate the Millennium.

Chichester Cathedral and Diocese commemorate St Richard on June 16, the Feast of the Translation, rather than April 3, the day of his death, as the latter date often falls around Easter.

In 2007, West Sussex County Council decided June 16 would also be a good day to celebrate the county’s culture and heritage, so it is also now known as Sussex Day. All images taken by James Chrismas and reproduced with the permission of Chichester Cathedral.

Visits take place weekly in the family’s own home. Volunteers are someone the family can talk to confidentially; they can play with the children or introduce ideas for activities; they could be an ‘extra pair

of hands’ in everyday situations or accompany on outings to the park, library or toddler group. Volunteers can also give information on services and offer reassurance and understanding that bringing up children can be difficult.

Volunteers need to be parents themselves or have had 24-hour parenting experience.

Citizen Advocate – Impact Initiatives Citizen Advocates are required to develop a long-term partnership with a person with a learning disability and speak up for them. This is a partnership between two people. The person with a learning disability is called the advocacy partner. An advocacy partner is someone at risk of having choices, wishes and decisions ignored, and who needs help in making them known and making sure they are responded to. A Citizen Advocate is a person who volunteers to speak up for and support an advocacy partner and is not paid to do so. The ideal person for this role will have good communication skills, be nonjudgemental and understanding of confidentiality, have the time to meet his/her partner on a regular basis and be able to cope with potentially stressful situations.

Blues seeking back-to-back wins PostSport after felling Oaks with four tries CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to make it two wins from two to kick-start life in London and South East Division One south.

The Blues head west to Tottonians on the other side of Southampton tomorrow (3pm) keen to make it back-to-back wins after suffering relegation last term.

The match is set to be a test of the ambitions of the team under the direction of new coach Scott Ashley, against their hosts.

DARTS: As the Bognor Friday Nights Summer Darts season nears its end, the Divisional Pairs knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

Division 3 saw 14 pairs take to the oche with the final coming down to Simon Edwards & Michael Hoare (Richmond 'B') against Steve & Dan Middleton (Newtown 'C').

It was a match of good scoring with a ton from Dan Middleton and a 125 from Edwards, but both teams had double trouble. Eventually, Steve Middleton hit double 12 to take the first leg.

The second leg saw the better darts come from Edwards & Hoare. With 152 left Hoare stepped up, hitting treble 19, and another treble 19, but the last dart was just inside the double 19. It was left to Edwards to secure the leg on his next turn. The last leg saw tons from Edwards and Steve Middleton, but Edwards & Hoare were scoring steadily and eventually hit double 1 to secure the title.

Division 2 saw 15 pairs step up with Ben Todd & Mick Isles (BRSA Ravens) and Richard Pennells & Stuart Gray (QE2 Galleon) facing off in the final.

After one ton from each team, Todd & Isles had first shot at a double. But, as both sides struggled to finish, it was Pennells who took the leg. The second leg saw Pennells & Gray forge ahead and hit the double to win the crown as their opponents encoutered scoring trouble.

Falcons on verge of lifting league title

CHICHESTER Falcons are within touching distance of taking the Division Two title after chalking up back-to-back wins in a busy weekend of action.

The Falcons doubled off against Southampton Spitfires and Redbridge Raiders in a sizzling double header in the sunshine at Wide Lane Sports Ground in Southampton.

Both opponents were from a lower division but the Falcons took no chances and dispatched both their Hampshire opponents within four innings on a mercy rule.

It means Chi can now take the title if they win their final match of the 2017 season at home to veteran side The OAPs. Infielder Cary Chen was unlucky at bat, with a series of fierce liners caught at third base.

But Harsha Desai shored up, hitting 8 for 8 on the day, all singles and holding her own at catcher position.

David Morris and Stefan Panayotopoulos kept things steady in centre outfield with a few routine fly catches and a trickle of singles

and doubles.

Pitcher James Wheeler outclassed everybody at bat with four home runs, two of which remarkably came from one single inning as the Falcons batted around the order.

Not far behind was shortstop Oliver Howley, with a homer of his own preceding four extra base hits to put the final nail in for the Raiders.

First baseman Lucy Morris quietly put in a faultless performance in the field as the Falcons ran off with 26-6 and 28-4 respective wins.

Attention now turns to the match at Oaklands Park against The OAPs. Win and the Falcons will be lifting some more silverware just a few years after being founded.

After losing just four times all term, the money will be on Chi to come out on top in the final match of the season.

Division 1 saw 12 pairs on the oche with last year's Division 2 Pairs champions Gary Blackwood & Gary Bryant (BRSA Wanderers) meeting Mark Walker & Nathan Warren (BRSA Wanderers) in the final. The first leg was taken by Blackwood & Bryant in 18 darts after three tons on the trot, despite a ton and three scores in the 80's from Walker & Warren.

The second leg was closer with Walker & Warren in the lead. But with 128 left, Blackwood stepped up and hit two treble 18s, followed by double 10, taking the win and the division one crown.

BOWLS: Selsey's Little Spain BC held their third Spoons Drive Competition of the season at the weekend - and Peter Armsby completed his hat trick of wins, each with different partners, when he picked up his third spoon of the year.

Armsby played with Joan Spicer who had an excellent game as the skip of the twosome.

On a lighter note, Little Spain BC held their annual Bowlers v Golfers match and after some fine bowling, and many putts being sunk (or was that pints!), the result was an honourable draw.

Pagham's valiant effort takes them close to cup giant-killing

Bognor safe & Chi celebrate BOGNOR secured their Division Two status for another year with a thrilling five-wicket victory.

In a nerve-racking tie where the losers would be relegated, Max Ashmore's side outclassed Worthing throughout, reaching the target of 170 with plenty to spare and condemning their rivals to the drop.

Elsewhere on the final day of action for the year, Middleton secured their Premier League status while Chichester Priory Park were crowned Division Three champions.

But it was at the Regis Oval where local attention was fixed as Bognor secured their league status for another year.

It has been a frustrating season for Ashmore's XI as his side have struggled to secure wins, mainly down to poor performances with the bat.

But recent weeks have seen Bognor hit their stride, meaning they went into the last game of the season needing a victory over Worthing to keep their place in the second tier.

After the visitors won the toss and chose to bat, Bognor's opening bowlers made their mark with Jerome Jones (334) and Josh Sargeant (2-25)

reducing Worthing to 24-4.

Barry Coll (66) led the recovery. But once he was dismissed, they limped on to a total of 169 in 45 overs.

In reply, Bognor held their nerve with Mikey Harris (28), Jim Fallick (29) and Jones (35*) all contributing as they reached the score with more than seven overs to spare.

In the Premier Division, Middleton rounded off their campaign with a disappointing 46-run defeat to Brighton & Hove.

After bowling out the visitors for 228 - in part due to Tommy Davies taking 4-36, Sean Heather's side were dismissed for 182 with only Nick Smith (64) and Patrick Colvin (41) putting up much resistance.

That ensured a seventh place finish for Middleton, a good return in a competitive league.

In division three, Chichester Priory Park were crowned champions after a four-wicket win over title rivals Crawley Eagles.

Daniel Joseph (5-28) was the pick of the bowlers before Chi reached the total of 173 with Ben Caldera (59*) and Jonathon Heaven (29*) guiding the side home with five overs to spare.

PAGHAM have a weekend off to reflect on what could have been after falling just short of another FA Cup shock.

After beating Isthmian South side Sittingbourne in the previous round, the Lions pushed another higher league opponent all the way in first qualifying round.

Early strikes from Terrell Lewis and Callum Overton put the SCFL Premier side 2-0 up at Isthmian South side Carshalton Athletic.

But a second half comeback from the home side saw them go through. After falling behind 3-2 Scott Murfin did equalise with ten minutes to go. But the higher league opponents eventually came out 5-3 victors.

Perhaps tired from that stellar effort, Pagham lost to Three Bridges 3-1 in the SCFL Premier on Tuesday night, Joe Booker getting the goal.

The Lions have this weekend off, although they will return to action next Tuesday when they make the short trip to Littlehampton Town in the league.

With the FA Cup attention over for another year, the management duo of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds will be hoping for three points against the Golds.

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford believes his side have what it takes to turn their season around after an inconsistent start to the campaign.

The Lillywhites maintained their 100 per cent home record with a 5-3 victory over Worthing United at Oaklands Park on Saturday.

The win was all the more remarkable after City were 3-1 behind at the break before substitute Scott Jones fired in a second half hat-trick.

But it is on the road where Rutherford's team have struggled, coming out on top in

just one of five matches so far. That poor form continued on Tuesday with a 2-2 draw at Crawley Down Gatwick, Dave Herbert and Jones scoring the goals.

That leaves Chi with plenty to dwell on as they have a mid-season break until September 16 thanks to other teams being in FA Vase action. Speaking after the Worthing United match, Rutherford said, “The players all need to be willing to play for 90 minutes, not 45 minutes. I've got eight or nine players that have not played consistently.

attitude he showed when he came on in the second half is the attitude we're expecting from everyone.

"To be honest, we've underachieved this first month and we're not where we should be at this point.

“We're doing all right at home but we've got to play well consistently both home and away.

I'm confident we'll turn it round.”

In SCFL Division One, Selsey made it six wins from six to sit top of the division after beating Southwick and then Storrington in the space of four days.

Morgan Forry (2), Joseph Clarke (2), Ryan Hillier, Ryan Morey, and Jake Goulding all scored in the 7-0 victory over Southwick before Forry, Clarke and an OG were on the score sheet against Storrington.

Next up for the Blues is a league cup match against Billingshurst tomorrow at the High Street Ground (3pm).

Elsewhere, SCFL Division Two side Sidelsham travel to Surrey tomorrow to face Combined Counties Premier Division side Knaphill in the first round of the FA Vase (3pm).

The Sids are second in the table after winning two and drawing three of their first five games, the last a 1-1 draw at Westfield.

CHICHESTER City Ladies will be hoping their cup form will help to boost their league fortunes when they return to FA Women's Premier League action tomorrow.

Matt Wright's side have lost their first two matches after being promoted last term.

But the Green Army showed what they are capable of at this level with a crushing 4-1 victory over West Ham United last time out.

They now head to Cardiff City on Sunday (2pm) hoping to use that win to spark an upturn in form in the league and get their campaign started.

Last weekend's victory was based on a strong start in front of their home cowd.

Chichester welcomed Jade ‘Chucky’ Widdows back to the fold for her first outing

of the season while fellow newcomer, Chloe Tucker started on the bench.

The Green and Whites deservedly got their noses in front after 15 minutes through Jess Lewry, who scored from 20 yard.

The ever-present then added a second after the break with a flicked header.

After the visitors were reduced to ten, the Hammers did get back into it. But Cherelle Khassal and a Tucker freekick sealed a comfortable victory for Wright's side.

Elsewhere, the development squad started their league season with a 2-1 win over Hassocks Ladies in the South East Counties Women's Premier Division.

Goals by Lucy Cook and Loulou Robson secured the win.

Pearce pleas for fan patience over Rocks' winless streak Next Game

WEALDSTONE (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has urged supporters to be 'realistic' as the Rocks extended their winless streak to five.

With injuries stretching the squad to nearbreaking point, followers of the Nyewood Lane side have not experienced that winning feeling for close to a month.

But, with key players returning to fitness, the Rocks will look to rediscover top form when they make the trip to north-west London to play third-bottom Wealdstone tomorrow (3pm).

That's followed by a Tuesday night trip to face Hemel Hempstead Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Officials at Nyewood Lane believe both games will be tough tests and be yet further proof that there are no easy games in National League South.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "I go back to what I said at the start of the season, that this is a difficult league and there will not be too much in terms of quality between the team that finishes third bottom and the team that finishes in seventh in the play-offs.

"I can understand supporters getting upset when they are so used to success. But they do have to get in realistic world that this is a league that is a lot harder.

"At this moment in time, we do not have a strong enough squad to stay very competitive when we have injuries."

The Rocks showed plenty of fighting spirit last weekend when they visited league leaders Chelmsford City and returned with a point.

However, that good feeling quickly turned to frustration when Bognor were unable to defeat a managerless Hungerford Town team on Tuesday night.

The visitors bagged two second half goals with their first shots on target. Despite Jimmy Muitt scoring with 15 minutes to go, Bognor were unable to get back on equal terms with Sami El-Abd having a goal ruled out.

Despite losing a match they could have very easily won, Pearce said there was no rollicking handed out the players afterwards.

He said: "I actually thought is was one of worst performances of the season. We improved in the last 20 minutes but by that point consolation was all we could take from the game.

"It's fair to say the players were disappointed, the supporters disappointed and I was disappointed. Given Hungerford's league position they are the sort of games that we should be looking to claim three points from."

Both Ollie Pearce and Doug Tuck are set to return to action tomorrow against two big physical and powerful sides.

Pearce said: "The physicality of this league has perhaps affected us. But if we get back to full strength and play our football I have every confidence in what we can do."

'We'll keep looking for players' WHEN things are not going as planned on the pitch, the normal call from supporters is for a quick fix.

But, given the financial constraints in place at Nyewood Lane, these are not possible at Bognor.

Despite being down on players due to injuries in recent weeks, manager Jack Pearce is aware that there's not the depth of talent in the area to simply add to the squad without breaking the bank - which makes it difficult when looking to bolster the ranks when things are not going well.

Pearce said: "It may not be what supporters want to hear but we're not in a hotbed of lots of players at this level.

"I'm also very aware that Havant two years ago had double the wage bill that we have and they got relegated from this level. My eyes are not closed to that, and we will work as hard as can to make sure attract right type of player."

The Rocks have bolstered their ranks in the past week, signing 23-year-old Chinedu McKenzie on a month's loan from National League surprise package Maidenhead United.

While admitting he is pleased to have the former Romford player in the ranks, Pearce said the search for players would continue.

WELL it's been an interesting fortnight to say the least.

Obviously the results themselves have not been too great and neither have the performances. But on a personal level it's good to be back in the side.

Injuries never ever help as it means we have just not had a settled side. Yesterday I think was the first time since I've been back that we've had the same back four for consecutive matches.

But I think most fans will see that it's at the other end of the pitch where we've struggled. There’s no two ways about it - with Ollie injured or on the bench and Jimmy Muitt out wide after being out we've struggled for a natural goalscorer.

That's not to criticise the lads who have come in. But whereas at the start of the year we were scoring freely, no one expected that to continue when you have your front three out injured.

In the past couple of games, it's not like we have not been creating chances. Against East Thurrock and Eastbourne we didn't force their keeper into any saves.

But at Chelmsford it took them to make a few good stops to prevent us from getting the win. And then definitely on Tuesday we had a lot of the ball in their box, but we just couldn't make it count.

If we continue to do that there will be no panic. If we keep plugging away and get one or two back then we'll start scoring again.

When we went to Chelmsford, make no bones about it, we were second favourites. The bookies had them at 11/4 on to beat us - they had not dropped points at home all year.

For us to go there in the form they were, the budget they have and the players they've got and for us to keep a clean sheet was good. We had our fair share of chances, too, and in the first half we could have gone one or two up.

As it was, we settled for a

draw. I thought our back four were immense. I think it was the best game I have ever seen Calvin play for us. And to show that grit and determination to keep a clean sheet at the league leaders meant that coming into Hungerford at home we were hoping to carry that on.

Looking back on that match.

I think that if we would have won that game 5-2 then no one would've complained.

As it was, they had two shots and scored two goals (even though we gave them away through immature defending.)

After the match we were quite deflated as we know we shouldn't have lost - sometimes it can work out like that.

Next up is Wealdstone which is always a tough place to play football. Their fans get behind them and their pitch has got a long sloping corner which they use to their advantage.

I've played up there four or five times and not taken anything away from them.

Hemel is a new place although my sister's boyfriend played there a few years ago on loan so I've heard a little about how they play.

They will be a typical National South side who are big and strong, go forward early and don't give a lot away.

The one good thing about the league, though, is that anyone can beat anyone.

Plus, we'll be boosted with the return of Ollie and Doug Tuck. We've missed Doug in recent weeks because he's a calming influence on the ball, which helps us get control of games. And Ollie's record over the past year or so has been excellent, in terms of scoring and creating goals.

We've also got Chinedu in on loan (we just call him Chin).

His attitude has been spot on and he wants to learn how we play which says a lot about him.

On the whole, it's not panic stations. The games are close and we've been on the wrong end of a few results. But give it time and things will turn around.
