She announced at a Build A Better A27 meeting on Monday that she has been

in discussion with Jesse Norman, roads minister at the Department of Transport since the last meeting at the end of July.

She said: "I have requested a meeting with Highways England where I will be requesting more time to make a decision but I know they will say 'tell us what you will do different if you have more time to come up with a community agreement.'

"THe meeting is going to be between September 6 and 11, but the date keeps

moving. I am going to ask for a further six months."

Highways England announced that the £250m funding would be available until September 15 and that an online route would be their preferred option.

THe Build a Better A27 group was formed in March and, collectively, the group has maintained that no option is off the table. However, on Monday's meeting, the group were still divided

over the best course of action.

Paula Chapman, from Berkeley Residential Homes, raised the question about combining other budgets.

She said: "Could we link up other budgets and make a holistic, joined up solution?

"Limiting ourselves to a Highways England's only structure is why we are in this mess now."

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk INITIAL findings of a history project about American fighter pilots based at West Sussex in the First World War are to be published by the University of Chichester.

THe year-long study, undertaken to raise awareness of the conflict on its centenary, focused on the US aviators who fought from Tangmere, Ford, and Rustington aerodromes.

THe results of the Over Here project will be revealed at a university conference hosted on Friday, September 1, by Professor Ross Wilson.

He said: “THe arrival of American servicemen in West Sussex in 1918 and the construction of aerodromes was enabled by a highly-important treaty between Britain and the US, while the development of technology and training for pilots contributed to the build-up of its air force.

"THis is important international history right on our doorstep, and our project team has uncovered a history of the First World War in Sussex that has been almost forgotten.

“We have been looking at the development of these military sites and studying the personal histories of individuals to understand how the war brought people across the world together.”

THe day-long university conference, which is free to attend, will include talks from Professor Wilson alongside

Dr Ross Mahoney of London’s RAF Museum who will speak on air power and the transatlantic alliance from 1914.

It will also feature lectures from Smithsonian historian Dr Laurence M Burke II, as well as Peter Pitman of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

THe Over Here project was funded by the Gateways to the First World War charity, through the Arts and Humanities Research Council, to raise awareness of the role of the US in the conflict.

Researchers investigated the relationships between Tangmere residents and US servicemen and have also unearthed evidence about the technological innovations developed in Sussex, including the long-range Handley Page bombers built to cross enemy lines.

Professor Wilson added: “If the 20th century is thought of as the 'American century', you can see its origins in the aerodromes that were set up in Sussex during the First World War. "THe arrival of American aviators and the construction of aerodromes in Sussex in 1918 demonstrated the commitment of the US to the war effort.

“It also brought people from the United States 'over here' that might have otherwise never come to Britain.”

Tickets for the university conference, which starts at 10am, but should be booked in advance from store.chi.ac.uk.

It will present findings from the university researchers who worked with volunteers from Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and the Chichester Community Development Trust.

People warned about dangers of throwing batteries in the bin RESIDENTS in West Sussex are being urged to think before they throw away batteries.

An increasing number are showing up in the county’s household rubbish, and they all present a fire risk.

We have seen a number of fires from batteries or electrical goods over the years, in refuse trucks, and at our waste facilities. With levels going up, especially smaller batteries, the waste and recycling contractors for West Sussex have both flagged their concerns to the county council.

Cabinet member for the environment, Deborah Urquhart said: “Any battery has the potential to spark and it can happen so easily. THey only

need to be damaged or crushed in the truck that collects your waste or your recycling, or at the sites where we process your waste.”

“Our recycling trucks are full of dry materials like paper and card, so you can imagine how easily they could catch light.

“And of course, batteries contain hazardous heavy metals which need to be dealt with properly. THat’s why you will see battery bins at so many retailers, and of course at our own Household Waste Recycling Sites.”

Pair take on 15,000ft jump all in aid of children's charity A PAIR of adrenaline junkies have jumped out of a plane to raise money for a children's charity.

Pals Stacy Gooding and Kevin Bendall, both from Chichester, decided to take on a skydive for THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides care at home for children with life threatening or terminal illnesses and their family.

Together, they raised more than £1,000 for the charity after taking part in the skydive from 15,000 feet at Salisbury Plains.

Stacy, 42, said: "I was a little nervous.

MORE than 100 people are taking part in bike races around Chichester this weekend.

During tomorrow evening, up to 100 men and 45 women, all experienced bike racers, will take part in three new races around a 1km circuit.

On Sunday, racing moves to the Goodwood motor racing circuit with two races in the morning followed at 12.30pm with an Open Track session for everyone.

Local cycling cub Southdown Velo CC has teamed up with Horsham based Ringway and other local sponsors to bring the sport, known as Criterium racing, to Chichester.

While similar events have been held in Southsea, Guildford and Winchester for many years, this is the first time some of the best road racers in the south will get to compete around this city centre circuit.

THree races each start and finish by the Assembly Rooms in North Street with competitors racing up to THe Cross, turning left along East Street and Eastgate before left again along the full length of East walls.

THe circuit then turns left again along Priory Road past the Park Tavern into St Peter’s and a final sharp left turn back into North Street.

THe hunters south architects women’s race kicks off proceedings at 6pm followed by the City Cycles Classic men’s race at 7pm and then finally the Ringway Chichester Elite Criterium at 8pm.

"THe best part was the freefall. For me, I was stunned. I couldn't believe I had done it. It was brilliant. I would recommend it to anybody.

"Doing it for charity was good as well. If you're going to do something stupid you might as well do it well."

Kevin, 45, added: "It was on my bucket list. I wasn't nervous at all. I am a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. I like that kind of stuff.

"THe initial freefall was the most frightening point because you are three miles above the earth.

"It was really quite surreal but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could see the Isle of Wight - you could see for miles and miles.

"When I got to the bottom I wanted to do it again. It was brilliant!"

Centre gets a lick of paint CHICHESTER'S Swanfield Park Community Centre has had a makeover thanks to a group of volunteers.

Staff from Pyramid Plus South, an assets management company that completes property services on behalf of residential property group A2Dominion, recently partnered up with local contractors to spruce it up.

THe £3,000 revamp was undertaken by more than 25 enthusiastic volunteers from Pyramid Plus South or one of its contractors who together donated their time and materials to complete the work in less than a week.

Jamie Silvester, the health and safety manager at Pyramid Plus South, said: “I am really proud of the efforts of all those who were involved in this project, especially our staff who used their volunteer days towards its success.

"We are delighted to have completed this community venture at Swanfield Park Community Centre - a location in which we work almost daily.”

THe community centre, which is managed by the local residents’ group, SPRING, saw nearly 1,800 local residents pass through its door last year.

Tracey Chapman, who chairs SPRING, said: “It might not seem much but a fresh coat of paint is just what the centre needed and it will make a real difference to those using it."

Team to cycle for hospital charity

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk STAFF members from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are set to take on a demanding pier-topier cycling challenge along the South Coast, for Love Your Hospital, the Trust’s official charity.

THe six-strong team will be joined by friends and family at Portsmouth Pier on Saturday, September 9, which marks the start line for the 53-mile journey to reach the final destination of Brighton Palace Pier in aid of the Neonatal Unit at St Richard’s Hospital.

“We’ve organised this event ourselves and some of us have very personal reasons for doing the ride,” said Val Timlick, the IT operation manager for the trust.

“THree years ago my grandson was stillborn at 28 weeks at St Richard’s Hospital.

"I wanted to do something for the unit as I felt that, had he survived, he would have probably been cared for by the neonatal team and they would have given him a fighting chance.”

Faculty administrator Melanie Fleet said she was hoping to complete the challenge in five hours and that it was vital the neonatal unit received the funds. She said: “My niece was born at 24 weeks in April this year and was transferred to St Richard’s neonatal unit at the beginning of July.

"Without the funds raised from

challenges like the one we’re doing, the unit wouldn’t be able to purchase the necessary equipment to care for premature babies.

"My niece received fantastic care from all the staff and my sister is extremely grateful for this.”

THe neonatal unit at St Richard’s Hospital admits premature babies who need both high dependency and special care and provides short-term intensive care.

THe hospital cared for more than 340 babies in 2016 and gives outpatient follow-up support for families up to two years after discharge.

Amanda Tucker, the head of charity for Love Your Hospital, said: “THe charity manages more than 270 individual ward funds across St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands Hospitals and supports staff who want to fundraise for a particular ward or area of care.

"Some of the team taking on this challenge are experienced cyclists, but others are really pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.

"We’ll be rooting for all of them and can’t thank the team enough for supporting our neonatal unit.”

Zita Warren, the ward manager for the neonatal unit said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to all the team for supporting us.

"We’re so grateful and would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck.”

Garden party celebrates the opening of city's new nursery A BRAND new Busy Bees nursery has officially opened with a traditional garden party.

THe nursery on Summerdale Road in Chichester was opened by the Mayor of Chichester, Councillor Peter Evans who was joined by his wife and Mayoress, Councillor Margaret Evans, nursery manager Shirley and her team to open the doors of the nursery to local families.

Families enjoyed exclusive tours of the nursery and found out more about the learning opportunities and quality care available to their children.

Birdham Bear ready to help inspire confidence in kids

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A TEDDY bear is helping children to feel more confident as they get older, thanks to a local entrepreneur.

Lynne Healy has created the Birdham Bear with the aim of building on children's self esteem.

She knitted the bear herself having been inspired after getting involved with her local knitting group. She has since written a story about it and had a book published.

Lynne, from Birdham, said: "I'm a life coach.

"I moved to this area two and a half years ago and started delivering my own personal development programme for young mum's.

"As the women were doing the programme, they said it was really helping their children.

"THat's no surprise because if you help the mum out, they pass it on to their children.

"So I thought about whether we could educate our children so that their sense of self is so strong that as they hit their teenage years they have the resilience to hit their teenage years and adulthood."

From then on, Lynne knitted the bear and then wrote the story and found an illustrator. She published the book herself.

Now, she is hoping she can help

children in and around the area as they get older.

"I started writing this story and I loved it," she added.

"What I realised as I wrote it was that there was a real theme about uniqueness and what makes you unique.

"I just took a leap of faith. It's been a great journey of discovery for me."

Lynne is also now working on a Christmas book.

She hopes that the Birdham Bear can go on to become famous around the county.

"THe message is that each and every one of us is unique in our own way," Lynne adds.

"Even if we are all good at the same thing, we all bring our own quality to it.

Adults need that too.

"I know and believe that children have got a lot of awareness that we don't realise as adults - hence the increasing number of genius children.

"We aren't asking them the right questions.

"I want children to have a series of stories that might encourage them to talk more about how they engage with the world and what the reality of the world is and to have some self-belief."

Lynne is hoping to promote the Birdham Bear in schools across the area too.

New business to open in city A GERMAN kitchen manufacturer is set to be one of the newest businesses to open its doors in Chichester next month.

Kutchnhaus will open in Crane Street on the weekend of Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17.

THe building has been empty since the old Ripples showroom closed more than two years ago.

Business owners in the area have reacted with delight at the new opening as the empty building had brought down the appearance on the street.

MANY of us will know home and haberdashery shop Closs & Hamblin more by their abbreviated title of C&H. However, they have recently reverted back to their original name to remind themselves and customers of their long heritage.

On April 1 1933 Harold Closs and Cyrill Hamblin founded small yet popular shops that

specialised in dress-making fabrics.

During that time making your own dresses and clothes at home was an important part of everyday life and the pair were able to corner the market with good quality and value fabrics and paper patterns.

Since then the firm has only continued to grow, both in size and in its services and products available. It has remained within the family of the Hamblins to the present day, surviving the rationing and physical damage to shops and stock during the Second World War and, perhaps even more impressive, modern demands for cheap off-the-rack clothing.

Closs & Hamblin is currently under ownership by the fourth generation of Mr Hamblins and shows no sign of slowing down.

Having now branched out into home fabrics as well as haberdashery you can expect to find a wide range of material products from curtains, upholstery, cushions, blinds and poles. THeir craft materials are also highly popular with knitting, sewing and dress making products in store for customers who are feeling creative.

To mark the re-branding of Closs & Hamblin to its original name the

Chichester shop has also undergone an exciting new refurbishment. Since the store on North Street opened in 1994 it hadn’t changed, until now. Not only has the store front changed to read ‘Closs & Hamblin’ but there is a glossy new dark blue colour scheme to match.

Store manager Linda Coote hopes customers understand that the quality of their products and services haven’t changed with the makeover.

She said: “We might have changed the way our shop-front looks but we still provide the same service, advice and friendly approach that has been here since we opened in 1994.”

THe advice of Linda’s team is something they are very proud of. With experienced and passionate seamstresses, knitters and crafters among the staff there is always someone there to assist and advise customers. Linda describes it as a “bespoke service”, something that is also found in the way in which their fabrics are sold: cut to measure rather than prepackaged so you are sure to get exactly what you need.

And that’s what Closs & Hamblin have been providing customers for almost 85 years, and they don’t intend to change that anytime soon.

Students give college a big thumbs up in national survey CHICHESTER College has been given an important seal of approval by its students.

THe college has scored highly in the annual National Student Survey (NSS), which asks students at higher education providers – including colleges and universities – to rate their experiences reinforcing the recent Silver Teaching Excellent Framework rating awarded to the college.

Chichester received an 86.75 per cent overall satisfaction score, which is higher than the regional and sector averages (84.13 per cent and 84.2 per cent respectively).

Students reported high levels of satisfaction with the college’s teaching and support available to them.

More than 95 per cent said they felt they were able to contact staff when they needed to and thought their lecturers were good at explaining things – both scores were much higher than the regional and sector averages, which were below 90 per cent.

Sue Banger, the director of higher education at Chichester College, said: “THese results are really positive and support the student-centric approach to education we have throughout the college.

“We have a growing HE provision here at Chichester, offering real alternatives with strong outcomes which build on the outstanding foundation from the college along with a key focus on employability as well as the academic rigour demanded at this level. So it’s extremely gratifying to know that our students are more than satisfied with the experience they have with us.

“We listen to our students, building on things they feel we do well and developing areas they may have expressed concerns about. I think this is reflected in the NSS findings and our recent Teaching Excellence Framework rating of Silver.

Man stabbed in city centre A MAN was stabbed near a park in Chichester.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the stabbing last weekend in which three men escaped the scene.

At around 3.10am on Saturday, August 19 officers were called to a disturbance in Swanfield Drive where a 27-year-old man had been stabbed in Prior Place.

He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital to be treated. His injuries are serious but not life threatening.

Police believe the suspects, three men known to the victim, left the scene in a small silver car.

Any witnesses to the incident who were in the area at the time are asked to contact police online quoting serial 187 of 19/08 .

More than 6,000 people turned up to the open air museum in Singleton for the traditional steam festival last weekend.

THere were steam engines on display and working around the 40-acre site in the South Downs National Park.

Alongside an extensive selection of full-size steam engines there was a wide range of exhibits.

Marketing manager Jenny Rudd said: "We were delighted with the amazing turnout. THere was something for everyone, not just an

impressive array of engines and vehicles on display for the enthusiasts but also vintage music, classic cars and all sorts of activities and demonstrations for the whole family to enjoy "Our funfair as always was extremely popular and the feedback from our visitors has been very positive."

Other attractions included a small traditional vintage fairground, vintage music and a themed tea tent.

Photo entries are flooding in MORE than 100 entries have already arrived for this year’s West Sussexthemed photo competition.

Running as part of Experience West Sussex – a campaign to promote the county as a tourist destination - the photo competition is looking for images inspired by one of three themes: Back to Nature, Cultural Encounters or New Experiences.

Prizes are being donated by businesses which feature on the Experience West Sussex website and include a trio of tickets for Chichester Festival THeatre, a meal at THe Cat Inn near East Grinstead, a spooky Worthing History tour courtesy of ‘All-Inclusive History’ and tickets for the ‘Dawn Walking Safari’ on the Knepp Estate.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It’s wonderful to have such a fantastic response with over 100 entries and still time to go. It just goes to show that visitors believe that West Sussex has so many wonderful activities on offer to enjoy.

Blacksmith students' pride THE WORK of Brinsbury blacksmith students has been celebrated with a trio of awards at the recent New Forest Show.

Vlad Navratil and Tilly Mitchell both won first prizes in the Artistic Sculpture and Industrial classes respectively.

Both Vlad and Tilly were students at Brinsbury recently, where they produced their ironwork. As well as winning first place in his class, Vlad’s Viking longship was also Best in Show for blacksmithing.

And Tilly also came third in the Best Newcomer Class.

Lecturer Graham Moss said: “We always have a great display of our students’ work, but this year we had a really strong show.

“Both Vlad and Tilly worked hard to produce their items, and the feedback we got was brilliant – and then to have them both come first in their categories is very impressive. THey did a fantastic job and

I met up with my mortgage broker last week to discuss re-mortgaging one of my buy-to-let properties whose mortgage was about to move onto its (not very competitive) Standard Variable Rate.

It gave me a chance to compare the various mortgage products out there, whilst bemoaning the fact that banks lend money to homeowners cheaper than they do to landlords. For example, the cheapest five year fixed rate mortgage at 75 per cent loan-tovalue will cost a homeowner 1.74 per cent per year in interest. In comparison, it will cost a buy-to-let investor 2.79 per cent (that’s 60 per cent more).

THe bizarre thing is that the lender in both these examples is HSBC. So it’s the same lender using their same money, with the same amount of equity put in by the buyer, but the bank will charge 60 per cent more to a landlord than to a first-time buyer or homeowner.

THe supposed reasoning for this discrepancy is that buy-to-let mortgages are ‘riskier’ to the lender.

With thorough tenant referencing and even rent protection insurance, is this really the case though, versus a first-time buyer who may have no experience, nor the budget leftover, of running a property? In fact, the lending rates are so misaligned that a first-time buyer with just a 10 per cent deposit can borrow money cheaper than an experienced landlord with a 25 per cent deposit.

Whilst I’m not financially qualified to give advice, it is clear that a landlord who wishes to borrow money to invest in a buyto-let property would be wise to evaluate whether this can be done by drawing equity from their own home first.

THis would allow them access to the preferential rates on offer, rather than going down the pricier buyto-let mortgage route.THe fact is, it has never been so cheap to borrow money. THe biggest issue people face is raising the large deposit, alongside jumping through all the hoops necessary to access the best mortgage rates.

Ring stolen from house POLICE are looking for a valued engagement ring which has been stolen from a Midhurst house.

THe distinctive white gold ring with a diamond cluster in a flower pattern, and diamonds on each side of the band, was taken from the house in Elmleigh, Midhurst, on Friday, July 7.

Investigator Kelly Ackerman said: "THe ring is valued at £1,200 but of course it has a much greater sentimental value to the owner.

Students to join charity gala

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS from the University of Chichester are hoping that a charity gala performance will raise thousands of pounds for Children in Need.

Musical theatre undergraduates are performing at the Kings THeatre in Portsmouth in aid of the foundation, which supports young people with disabilities.

THe event, which will be held on Sunday, October 1, is a co-production between the university, the Portsmouthbased Academy of Musical THeatre, and the Kings to coincide with the Edwardian playhouse’s 110-year anniversary.

Evie Evans-Wright, a third-year student at Chichester, said: “To have been given the opportunity to perform and raise money for such an iconic charity is truly heart-warming.

“It is a special day to look forward to and I feel privileged to perform in the gala.”

THe two-and-a-half-hour showcase, starting at 7:30pm, will feature performances from the University’s BA (Hons) musical theatre performance degree, which is intended for aspiring artists interested in vocal performance, dance, and acting.

Second-year undergraduate James Molyneux-Watson said: “It is truly an honour to be given the unexpected opportunity to work at this incredible theatre, especially for such a great cause and the chance to perform in front of a huge audience.”

THe national Children in Need fundraiser has raised more than £600m

since the telecast was first shown in 1980.

THe Portsmouth project has been pioneered by Andrew Wright, a senior lecturer and head of musical theatre performance at Chichester.

Mr Wright said he initially approached the theatre in January and proposed a major fundraising event which, through rigorous consultation, has combined with plans to celebrate the 110-year anniversary of the theatre.

He added: “THis is an exciting, rich and

diverse gala evening, featuring highquality entertainment from which all proceeds will be donated to Children in Need.”

THe performance will include the King’s Youth THeatre alongside the Academy of Musical THeatre, Portsmouth Players, South Downs Musical Society, and students from the University of Chichester.

THe event will be hosted by Fred Dinenage and West End star Jack

Edwards.

It will include an excerpt from First World War drama Lads of THe Village, initially performed in the playhouse 100 years ago.

THE WONDEROUS WORLD OF WATER Is there anything more versatile, more multi-talented than water?

What else keeps us alive, clean and healthy, can be used to baptise our babies, puts out fires, be swum in and be bottled, frozen and charged with bubbles for later use? Not just for us but for animals, plants and insects too, as well as all the fish and things that go bump in the night. Plus, it calms our souls and dilutes our problems.

You know all this of course but I am just bringing you round to the problem we can have with watering our gardens in the summer. If you are reading this as a savage wind is driving heavy rain across your yard just remember we do have hot spells (usually whilst we are away on holiday, on business or ill) The neighbours won’t want to get arrested for helping-out due to a hose pipe ban so things can get ugly in the back yard.

There is the possibility that a garden service could drop by every couple of days with bottles of mineral water but

that might end up costing more than an air ticket to an island in the Sun. Another solution is to install an automatic watering system.

Simply, you rig up an uncomplicated battery operated timer to a tap and hose then program it to open and close at your convenience. It’s a start...

More sophisticated.

During hot summers plants suffer stress if they don’t get watered. More advanced equipment will extend to a mini-computer, water supply pipes, drip fittings and sprinklers; keeping the grass happy, the leaves moist, and the slugs excited.

Blakefest to return with big names A STELLAR line-up of musicians, poets and other artists have been announced for a festival in Bognor Regis.

This year's Blakefest sees a variety of performers and artists gather at multiple venues in town across the weekend of September 16 and 17.

The annual festival explores the life and work of poet William Blake who resided in Felpham for three years, where he wrote his most famous work Jerusalem.

Alongside performances dedicated to his poetry will be music and verse from other genres to celebrate the arts.

Saturday's event is more poetryorientated with a multimedia project at Bognor Library that offers a 360 degree virtual tour of Blake's cottage.

Following this will be a guided walk with Irish poet Niall McDevitt who will discuss Blake's connection to the local area.

To end the day jazz-beat poet Michael Horovitz will be joined by other poets and musicians for an evening at The Regis School of Music.

The main Sunday event will be held at the Newtown Social Club. This will include musical performances from Gwyneth Herbert, David Devant and his Spirit Wife, Tymon Dogg and also local performers, Ruby and The Re-

Visions.

This day will intersperse the live music with performance poetry.

Festival director Rachel Searle hoped this could be Blakefest's most successful year.

She said: "This is a real jewel for Bognor Regis.

"We hope this is our most exciting, authentic Blakean festival to date,. It's already attracting international artists anxious to contribute.

"I am particularly moved that Britain’s most famous Blakean beat poet and jazz musician Michael Horovitz will be journeying down to Bognor Regis to share his music, passion and memories of the enormous influence of Blake's poetry on 1960s musical England.

"I am hoping that something of the vision and passion burning in this year's Blakefest will continue in Bognor Regis, long after the festival has finished.

"The profile and quality of the line-up and the generosity of the performers themselves guarantees that anyone longing for something a little bit different will be pleased they were there."

RESIDENTS around Bognor Regis and Chichester are being urged to think before they ditch batteries.

An increasing number of them are showing up in the county's household rubbish - they all present a fire risk.

Latest figures from the council show around 2,000 tonnes of small electrical items and 182 tonnes of batteries are being thrown into rubbish bins and householders in one year in West Sussex.

Blazes have been sparked by batteries or electrical goods over the years in refuse trucks and at West Sussex County Council's waste sites.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "Any battery has the potential to spark and it can happen so easily.

"They only need to be damaged or crushed in the truck that collects your waste or your recycling, or at the sites where we process waste."

It was easy for batteries to catch fire in recycling trucks full of dry materials like paper and card.

"It doesn't take much - a piece of foil, a staple, even the metal floor of the truck. They can all cause a battery to short and, of course, batteries contain hazardous heavy metals which need to be dealt with properly," Cllr Urquhart added.

The situation has prompted the county's waste and recycling contractors to raise their concerns to the county council.

This was done through the battery bins at household waste recycling sites. All the major supermarkets also offer battery recycling points.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS at Chichester High School and Bishop Luffa celebrated successful exams results in GCSEs yesterday.

With concerns regarding the changes in grading for maths and English, schools nationwide were on tender-hooks.

Chichester High school confirmed their students achieved 75 per cent standard pass in English and 72 per cent in maths.

Lauren Farndell, aged 16, pictured far right, was Chichester High School's highest achiever with three 9s in English language, English literature and maths. Lauren also scored an A and A* grades in her remaining subjects.

She said: "I was nervous about English and didn’t think I had done particularly well but I'm really proud of what I achieved.

"I studied really, really hard - probably about five to six hours a night from the start of Year 11.

"It feels absolutely amazing. I'm going to stay on at sixth form and study maths, further maths, chemistry and physics for my A-levels. Hopefully I will study chemical engineering and I'm looking at Cambridge if, very much, if, I get the grades."

Tayla was not expecting to receive a grade 4 in maths. She said: "I thought I had failed maths. I was struggling and had a tutor to help me. I'm really pleased. I also got A grades in dance and photography. I want to go to Chichester College to do business and then become an events manager for parties and celebrities."

Nathan said: "I am over the moon. I'm choked. It's such a proud day. She grafted

hard and got the grades. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely phenomenal."

Jo McKeown, head of Chichester High School said: "THe new grading system was a challenge. THe teachers have worked tirelessly marking, moderating and working hard with other schools to really grapple with it. THey also worked with the students who have shown what they are made of. THe results show the hard work has paid off."

Bishop Luffa School also showed equal success with an achievement of 89 per cent standard pass in English and 87 per cent in maths.

Headteacher, Nick Taunt said: "You can't compare these results with previous years.

THere is more emphasis on knowledge and memory.

"THe children have had to learn this quickly and while support has been provided, understandable concerns have been expressed.

"I regret the loss of coursework as it gave the chance for students to explore and research independently.

"I am very pleased with the results.

Pupils worked extremely hard and the effort paid off."

Chloe said: "I thought I had done really badly in maths and I managed to get a 9.

English literature was my worst subject and I'm really surprised I managed a 7.

"My favourite subject was Spanish and I got an A* grade. I'm staying on to sixth form and studying maths, further maths, chemistry and biology. My dream is to go to Oxford University and do something maths or science related."

Gill added: "We are so proud of Chloe.

She worked really hard. She's very

organised and conscientious.

"Her older sister is currently at the Reading Festival and we had to FaceTime her as Chloe opened her results."

Celebrations for pupils in Selsey

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THERE were lots of smiles at THe Academy, Selsey, as students celebrated a good set of GCSE results - despite a difficult year as the school recovered from the devastating fire.

Kamilla Kiss got a 7 in English literature and maths and an 8 in English language. She also got 2A*s, an A, a B and a C. She is going to Chichester College to study physics, chemistry and either film studies or art.

She said: "I am feeling quite happy about the English language and the maths as well. I didn't think I would do that well.

"It's been good here. We've had good support from the teachers but we had to be quite independent at times too.

"I feel like I have studied as best as I could so I am quite happy."

Ben Miles got a 7 in maths, an 8 in English literature and a 7 in English language as well as 2A*s, 3As and 2Bs. He is going on to Chichester College to study chemistry, biology and maths, with dreams of becoming a vet.

He said: "I passed and that's the important bit. It's what I was expecting.

"I want to go on to be a vet because I like working with animals more than working with humans."

Mum Amanda Miles, 37, added: "I am a very proud mum. I am over the moon. He is very understated and very humble."

Overall, the school saw 62 per cent of students achieve a 4 or above in English and 63 per cent achieved a 4 or above in maths, in the new number grades.

Headteacher Tom Garfield said: "We have got kids who have done brilliantly.

We've got some fantastic results."

Mr Garfield reflected on a tough year, which saw pupils having to work from temporary sites following the fire.

"It has been a difficult year for us," he added.

"But we are so proud of the resilience of the students and how they have turned it into positive results. THey didn't look for excuses. It's incredible."

Josh Nicholson, pictured right, got an 8 in English language and a 7 in maths as well as two As, a B, a C and a D. He is going on to study a diploma in games development at Northbrook College in Worthing.

He said: "I think I'm shocked about the English result. I thought I would get

a 4.

"I'm sad to be leaving school. When you're here, you wish the day would end but as soon as you are gone for the summer, you miss school."

Pat's after bags of help for her first fundraiser f Joan Newton celebrates

Joan enjoys her 105th birthday JOAN Newton celebrated becoming one of the oldest known residents of Bognor Regis by saying: "I'd live my life all over again."

Joan reached 105 on Wednesday with a homemade cake and a party at Greenways Methodist Home with her fellow residents.

She has lived at the Hawthorn Road home of 42 residents longer than any of her neighbours and is also the oldest of them.

She was taken out for a birthday tea the previous day by her son, Gordon, on one of his regular visits from Dover.

Joan said: "At the moment, it does not feel any different being 105.

Sometimes, I go out for walk but it's nice if I don't have to."

One of her favourite destinations is West Dean Gardens, north of Chichester.

She is also a lover of crosswords and crime novels.

Joan was born in Tunbridge Wells and can remember Zeppelins going overhead in the First World War. She met her husband, Ewart, playing tennis and moved with him to his home town of Chichester in her late 20s. She worked in the district council offices, having been an insurance agent in Kent.

Ewart was also an office worker and the organist at Christ Church in the city. The couple moved to Greenways in 2000 and Ewart passed away about ten years ago.

CHARITY fundraiser Patricia Hopper is calling on Aldwick residents to have a heart.

Patricia has formed the Aldwick Fundraising Group of the British Heart Foundation to help the charity's efforts in tackling the cardiac conditions which can affect all ages.

Her first event will be a coffee morning and bring and buy sale from 10am on September 23 at her home in Queensfield West, opposite the recreation ground, in West Meads.

Patricia and her fellow initial members - Elizabeth Atkins, Diana Mercer and

Valerie Pratt - have started by placing collection bins in businesses in the area who have welcomed their efforts.

Patricia, 70, said: "I have been involved with the BHF for many years. I think the reason is that my brother died of a massive heart attack when he was 61 and that was 14 years ago.

"But many people who have heart attacks now can be saved thanks to the research which the BHF has helped to fund because of the work of its volunteers. That makes the donations we raise really important."

Former bank worker Patricia has toured the laboratories at a Southampton hospital

where some of the latest research is taking place. "The work they are doing there is quite amazing," she said.

"They can save so many people now and the operations they can carry out are unbelievable from young babies upwards."

Her previous fundraising work for the BHF included ten years of completing the annual London to Brighton bike ride.

"I must have raised thousands of pounds by doing that. I even had my own team Pat's Pedallers - and it was easy. Once you got on the bike, it was just a case of staying on it. It was like a day out," she added.

Call to bring songs to Chalcraft Hall Care Home this Christmas SELFLESS children will have the chance to make Christmas extra special for the residents of Chalcraft Hall Care Home in Bersted this year.

As part of the exciting Post Wonderland campaign children from around Chichester and Bognor Regis are being invited to help raise holiday spirit by raising their voices.

The team at Post Newspapers hopes to see as many as children as possible take part in a carol singing mission to bring traditional Christmas songs to care homes around the area.

The campaign is being generously sponsored by Regis Renovations who hope it can bring some Christmas magic into care homes in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Residents from the Chalcraft Hall Care Home are excited to be a part of this scheme.

Sara Whitworth, the home’s deputy manager, explained what the carols could mean for those in the home.

She said: “We are all so pleased to be a part of this, it’s such a good cause.

“It is so exciting for the residents and will be lovely for them to meet the children taking part.

“They love music especially around Christmas time, and to have it sung live to them will be so special.

“We’ve never had anything like this before.”

Chalcraft Hall offers care for people over the age of 65 years, however they specialise in caring for dementia patients.

They provide a vital service to those in need of help, whether continually or intermittently. By specialising in dementia care the staff at Chalcraft have ensured they have the highest level of understanding for their patients which is only aided by the friendly atmosphere of the home.

Since Sara started working at Chalcraft Hall last year she has witnessed the benefits of this affectionate relationship between both residents and staff. She said: “It’s a really fun-filled place to work.

We’re all like one big family.”

Fun and entertainment are always a consideration at Chalcraft Hall. Twice a week live music is provided and their caring staff bring quizzes, bingo, dancing, music therapy and much more to the residents who look forward to the different activities.

Lidl's last of the summer wines a definite bargain Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

A SOMEWHAT inclement spell of British August weather tends to divert attention from the beach to more indoor estival pursuits, so I duly headed off to Lidl to ascertain whether their wine cellar continues to prove alluring.

In terms of white wines and sparkling wines I looked for ones not exceeding £10 in price.

The 2016 Château Fayau Bordeaux from the Cadillac area initially caught my eye with its Sémillon grape mixed in with the Sauvignon Blanc grape producing a light fresh wine, pale in colour with notes of lemon and apple - good with food or as a party wine and retailing for £6.99.

I next happened upon an erstwhile old favourite of mine, namely an Australian Seaview Brut which proved to have good mousse with a light yeasty nose of baked apple, apricot, pear and lemon and offering good balance and acidity for a mere £6.99 - an unbeatable price for bubbly.

The Seaview Chardonnay Pinot Noir is an alternative at the same low price

and eminently drinkable too, although I preferred the Brut.

Plumbing the depths price-wise I next espied a 2015 Soave Classico in the normal wine selection for just £4.49.

2015 was a good year for Soave Classico and this one had citrus flavours to the fore with high acidity, was quaffable and refreshing and is drinkable on its own or with food and excellent value for money.

For a little extra expended (£5.99) the 2015 Val De Salis Chardonnay from the Pays D'Oc warmer vineyards of Southern France had good fruit, was lightly oaked and had strong melon and tropical fruit flavours and was well balanced and would pair well with

salmon or pasta dishes.

At the top of my budget the 2015 Les Grandes Chaumes Pouilly Fumé priced at £9.99, a most competitive price for this subtle wine, produced by André Saujot exudes gooseberry, grapefruit and grassy notes with stony minerality and is a good buy at this price.

My ultimate bargain this week, however, is the weekend offer of six bottles of Allini Prosecco for just £20 and perfectly quaffable to boot.

My customary diversion this week involves my weekend visit to Harry Boulter's Time Machine Records, pictured above, to confirm that I am the proud owner of one of the only five hundred copies of the 1967 Who Sell

Out albums with a poster and its mint condition and provenance makes it worth many a fine wine.

Back to Baccanalian pursuits, I was excited to find a 2015 Valle Central Malbec for the meagre price of just £4.49 which duly regaled my taste buds and is a no-brainer purchase - get in!

My next red was a Rioja Reserva and thus from two principal grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha, with red fruits in abundance and the terms joven, crianza, reserva and gran reserva indicate increasing levels of oak-ageing with American oak being more popular adding coconut or vanilla flavours.

Chicken With Chickpeas, Tomatoes, and Chorizo

serves: 4-6

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving • 8 ounces Spanish-style chorizo, cut into 1/2-inch dice • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (about 1 cup) • 1 tablespoon smoked Spanish paprika • 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted (such as Muir Glen) • 1 whole chicken (about 4 pounds), cut into 8 serving pieces, or a mix of bone-in, skin-on breasts, drumsticks, and/or thighs • 2 cups homemade or storebought low-sodium chicken stock • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 teaspoons sherry vinegar • Chopped fresh parsley leaves, for serving

1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker over mediumhigh heat until shimmering. Add chorizo and cook, stirring, until just starting to crisp around the edges, about 2 minutes. Add onions and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes.

Add paprika, chickpeas, tomatoes, chicken pieces, and broth. Season gently with salt and pepper.

2. Seal pressure cooker and bring to high pressure.

Cook for 15 minutes. Cool pressure cooker under a cold running tap (if using an electric cooker, use the quick release valve), and open. Return to high heat and cook, stirring gently, until it achieves a thick, stew-like consistency, about 5 minutes. Stir in vinegar and season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in parsley and serve, drizzling with more extra-virgin olive oil at the table.

15 empanadas

INGREDIENTS • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed • 2 cups shredded chicken • ½ cup enchilada sauce plus more for dipping • 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese, plus more for sprinkling • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water mixed together in small bowl • Sour cream, cilantro, green onion for garnish

The 2013 Cepa Lebrel (greyhound variety) Rioja Reserva at a low price of £5.79 has the flavour of ripe strawberries and has been oaked, although the vanilla is not that evident, and has a decent balance of soft tannins and some acidity and is good value as an easy - drinking red.

My final selection is that of a 2015 Pierre de Roucans Vinsobres, a fullbodied Rhône wine with spiced plum flavours and notes of pepper and decidedly dry and an ideal accompaniment to barbecued meat and all for the princely sum of £6.99.

Chicken Enchilada Empanadas

Method 1. Preheat oven to 375 F degrees.

2. In a bowl, mix together chicken and enchilada sauce.

3. Roll out puff pastry sheet slightly and cut into 4-inch discs. (I used a mini tart pan as a guide) Roll scraps together and roll out again to make more discs. You should get about 15 discs.

mixture in the middle of each disc and sprinkle with about a tablespoon of cheese.

Dot half of the disc with egg wash mixture and fold over, sealing edges.

Place on a baking sheet lines with a silt pad or parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Using a fork, poke two sets of holes on top of each empanada to let steam escape while baking.

Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with cheese.

Bake about 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.

Serve with extra enchilada sauce, green onions, sour cream and cilantro.

Ooh la la! French delights aplenty at Chez Moi writes Martin Lury HOME is where the heart is: a well-known adage and entirely fitting in the case of newlyestablished Chez Moi in Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis.

Arriving at circa one o'clock with a friend, I was immediately struck by the light interior and intimacy of all tables with the added bonus of space in between tables.

Furthermore, one way to gauge a restaurant's likely quality is to peruse the wine menu, which I duly did and noted a fine selection of wines and the unusual fact that all were available by the glass (even the more expensive ones) and the prices thereof were exceedingly reasonable.

As it felt a tad rude to just have a glass, we opted for a bottle of the Mâcon - Loché of 2015 vintage for just £18 (a bargain restaurant price, in my view) and found it to be fresh, fruity and refreshing with a hint of creaminess - quel délice!

Spoilt for choice, we were tempted by all the French provincial style dishes on the menu.

After much deliberation, we both opted for the locally-sourced, homemade crab soup with langoustines and it proved to be deliciously fresh, rich and a culinary experience of note.

We also sampled some of the gluten-free homemade bread with tomato and tarragon which looked heavy, but was beautifully light.

For main courses we looked at the specials board as I believe these dishes are often ones the chef likes to cook.

I chose the slow roasted (eight to nine hours according to the chef) pork belly (porchetta) with purée de pommes de terre, fine beans and accompanied by a sauce au cidre for just £10.50 - this was a veritable delight and the pork was decidedly moist and succulent and the sauce reduced to perfection.

My partner opted for the crispy duck with

salad (copious amounts of), pommes de terre sautées and boudin noir for £10.

The duck was tasty and the black pudding tender and a pleasant surprise. A lunch-time treat which meant no room left for puddings all priced at £4 including an Eton mess, a crème brûlée and an apple tart tatin.

The freshness of all ingredients shines through and the homemade bread was wholesome and tasty to boot.

The man toiling away in the kitchen is none other than Michael Newton-Young of Coffee Corner fame with his wife Nathalie as front of house.

Michael has worked with the Roux Brothers and it is most evident that cooking is his passion!

We were served by young Soipet with the ready smile and she outlined the opening

Sunday opening times are 10am till 4pm.

The evening menu, which is refreshed on a weekly basis, includes pan-fried sea bass, beef Wellington and pork belly.

All-day breakfasts are available as are specialities such as croque monsieur, le classic club (roast chicken and bacon and egg mayonnaise) and bâtonnet de poisson (homemade cod fish fingers in brioche crumb and tartare sauce and all served with mixed salad and fries).

Detox this September for a fresh, healthy beginning OK, SO the summer holidays are not quite over yet, but we are nearly there.

Maybe we have a few more weeks left of sunshine, or maybe you still have your summer holiday to look forward to.

But the school children are all picking up exams results, the evenings are getting noticeably darker (boo hoo!) and before we know it we will be shopping for new school uniforms and starting to think about autumn.

I actually love September. For me it’s a bit like January. It feels like a new start, and a new beginning after the over indulgence of the summer. Even though we want to look in our best shape in the summer months, and may spend weeks preparing for that bikini body, don’t you always find that it ends up with a continuous over indulgence?

Garden parties, barbecues galore, camping, drinking, etc.

So, for me, preparing for September is all about cleansing foods. Immediately we do this, our skin looks amazing, our energy is re-gained and our focus and determination can come back with extra vigor!

There are many ways to cleanse the body. You can do juice dieting, eat raw, live on smoothies, cut our carbs, don’t eat after 6pm, and the list goes on. But I think when you have over indulged; you need to introduce the good stuff slowly. Each day you can just add some health enhancing foods into your diet and see the difference it makes.

This is not only going to boost your immune systems, but help you to shed any extra pounds too.

Remember small steps makes big changes.

THERE is a real buzz of activity at the Aldingbourne Trust site as groundworks and superstructures have continued on track.

With the reinforced concrete columns and walls now being cast, for the first time it is possible to see the outline of the building structure.

High quality formers are used during the cylindrical support column pours, giving the pillars a beautifully smooth finish.

This is very important to the build as concrete is not only the main structural element, but also a key design feature.

While visiting the Amiri building works at the Aldingbourne centre, the blogging team went to see Mike and Kaye who run another one of the trust's success stories.

Aldingbourne Horse Rugs is a social enterprise company which trains and employs adults with learning disabilities and gifts all its profits back to the Aldingbourne Trust.

Picking up horse rugs from all across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, the rugs are cleaned with industrial washing machines then dried in a dedicated drying room.

The rugs can also be repaired and reproofed. Among other tasks, the trust's supported adults use wire brushes to clean the velcro strips which safely secure the blankets to the horses.

This vital job is often overlooked in horse rug washing, so you could say the trust's adults are not only making a big difference, but literally holding the company together!

ORGANISERS of a garden gathering in Climping are celebrating its success.

Sue Scanlon and Maggie Brackley raised £850 towards a potential £1,000 for Parkinson's UK with their mini-festival, pictured above.

The two invited friends and family to attend the feelgood fundraiser for the charity earlier this month.

Sue, 61, of Climping, pictured below right, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2007 but that has not stopped her being active.

WEST Sussex is the go to place for retirement, a new survey has shown.

The county has overtaken Dorset as the most attractive area in which to spend the years after retirement.

It is the county where pensioners have the highest quality of life, according to analysis of the latest publically available data for England and Wales. The analysis was carried out by Prudential UK to update its Quality of Retirement Index.

Stan Russell, a retirement income expert at Prudential, said: "There are now 10.6 million people aged 65 or over in England and Wales, a million more than five years ago, and accounting for nearly one in five of the total population.

"So, deciding the right place to retire to is a challenge faced by a large number of people each year.

"Our analysis shows that every part of the country has something different to offer pensioners, but the counties with the most attractive attributes tend to be along the southern and eastern coasts of England.

"Counties like West Sussex and Dorset may be attractive because of their low crime rates or the quality of their health care. However, finding the right spot to live in such popular locations can be tricky. It is understandable that many people want to choose somewhere attractive to live in retirement.

"And, before taking any decisions on how to turn their pension savings into an income, many will also benefit from a conversation with a professional finance advisor."

The Prudential's first place rating for West Sussex states: "With Fishbourne Roman Palace and Arundel Castle within its boundaries, West Sussex has a history of attracting people to come and live there.

"It remains attractive in 2017 as proven by the fact that it has the second highest net inflow of pensioners in England and Wales. This could be down to its strong rankings for good weather and disability-free life expectancy.

"Indeed, West Sussex achieved top four rankings in half of the eight research categories."

Second place in the rankings went Dorset and East Sussex was third followed by Devon and then Norfolk.

The following factors were among the eight considered when the ratings were compiled - the proportion of pensioners in the population, disability-free life expectancy, access to healthcare, crime and weather.

Carl Smith joined the thousands of spectators on Portsmouth's waterfront to capture the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth in her home port, pictured above. He left home about 5.10am last Wednesday and drove to Gunwharf Quays before walking to the vantage point of the Round Tower.

"It was already full, apparently from about 4am onwards, but with some persuasive talking to the security guards, they kindly squeezed me in," he said.

"It was quite crowded on the tower and along the walls as far as one could see and, although stuck at the back of the crowd, by standing on the benches we could all see pretty well."

He could glimpse the floating leviathian - weighing 77,800 tonnes - in the haze beyond the Solent forts as she began to make her way in.

"Born and raised on the Isle of Wight, I have seen many of the great ships passing through the Solent over the years, and I find them fascinating to watch and enjoy.

"This was an event I had to see. It's an exciting experience to be part of welcoming a great British ship and a very proud moment for Portsmouth and the Royal Navy."

Carl also spent several years commuting to Portsmouth's College of Technology to train as an electronics engineer and ran his own business before he retired.

City has history of home grown poets that go right back to start of the 18th century

By Lorna Still, volunteer at The Novium Museum WE HAVE heard of Keats being inspired to write ‘THe Eve of St Agnes’ in Chichester, and also of the trial of William Blake in the Guildhall, but Chichester has some homegrown poets too.

George Smith (1713-1776) was one of the three brothers known as the ‘Smith's of Chichester’.

He was a noted landscape painter, but also wrote pastoral poetry of some merit, claiming that though ‘I never made the art of writing my particular study...my profession as a landscape painter induced me to study Nature very attentively’.

THis inspired ideas for poetry ‘many of which I flatter myself are new.’ His patron, the Duke of Richmond, bought many of Smith’s paintings for Goodwood House, but also purchased six copies of the pastorals when Smith’s daughters published a second edition in 1811.

William Collins was born on Christmas Day in 1721, on the site of what is now the Halifax building, 21 East Street. He was the son of a prosperous hatter who had also been Mayor of Chichester.

He was educated at the Prebendal School before going on to Winchester and then Magdalen College Oxford, graduating in 1743.

At Winchester College he befriended the poet and critic Joseph Warton and Collins’ first published poetical work, ‘To a Lady Weeping’, appeared in ‘THe Gentleman’s Magazine’ in 1739.

THis was followed by the ‘Persian Eclogues’ in 1742 which proved quite popular.

Collins decided not to become a priest, instead moving to London, where an inheritance and an allowance from his uncle failed to fund his extravagant lifestyle. He had to leave, but not before he had befriended writer and poet Dr Samuel Johnson and actor,

playwright, theatre manager and producer David Garrick.

In his ‘Lives of the Poets’, Johnson describes Collins at that time as cheerful, with ‘many projects in his head’.

Warton and Collins planned a joint publication of their Odes, but the publisher only accepted Warton’s work.

Collins’ ‘Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegorical Subjects’ was published in 1745, but they were not popular.

Collins became ill with depression and he went to France, hoping that travel would help. However, his condition worsened and he was committed to MacDonald’s madhouse in Chelsea in 1754, until his elder sister in Chichester decided to take care of him in her house adjoining the Cathedral cloisters.

Collins looked for solace in the Bible and died on June 12th 1759, aged only 37.

His ‘Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands’, begun 10 years earlier, remained unfinished.

He was buried in St Andrew’s Oxmarket.

Collins’ work gradually achieved greater recognition and he is now considered one of the most talented 18th century lyric poets and a precursor of Romanticism. William Hayes set ‘THe Passions’ to music in 1750.

Play, Miss Smith will recite Collins’s celebrated ‘Ode to the Passions’ with appropriate music’.

A memorial by John Flaxman was placed in the Cathedral in 1795.

Charles Crocker led a very different life.

He was born in Chichester on June 22nd 1797, to poor parents, and was one of a large family.

He obtained a place at the local Grey Coat charity school where he developed a love of books, especially ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’. At the age of 11, he was apprenticed to a shoemaker for seven years and then worked as a shoemaker in his own right.

He used the circulating library and also purchased books of poetry, including the work of William Collins.

He read these in the evenings, repeating the words to himself as he worked during the day.

He was later employed in Mr Mason’s bookselling department, but in 1845 he became Sexton of the Cathedral and later Bishop’s Verger. He loved the cathedral and said these years were the happiest of his life.

Crocker wrote poetry of his own, much of which reflected his religious faith.

When the gravestone of cathedral organist THomas Kelway was found and re-cut in 1846, he wrote a sonnet about it.

THe Bishop of Chichester and Crocker’s friends helped him to publish his poems and they appeared in 1860.

Bognor's survival hopes remain alive PostSport after Jones and Willway partnership BOGNOR kept their survival hopes alive after securing a much needed six-wicket win against St James's Montefiore in Sussex Division Two. After restricting the visitors to 196-7, an unbeaten century partnership between Rob Willway (88*) and West Indian overseas player Jerome Jones (53*) guided Bognor home.

It means Max Ashmore's side remain second bottom with two games left to play in the season. They head to fifth-placed Lindfield tomorrow (12pm) knowing that they need a win if they are to play division two cricket next season.

Bognor will need more of the same fighting spirit that they showed last weekend.

The platform was set by a solid bowling display led by Joe Ashmore (2-48)which restricted the visitors to a slightly-below par total.

With the bat, Bognor looked to be struggling after losing four of their top order for single figures. But Willway and Jones pushed on, putting on 120 to guide the side home.

In the Sussex Premier Division, Middleton suffered a six-wicket loss to Preston Nomads in a rain affected match.

After being put into bat, the Bognor-based side fell to 15-4 before skipper Sean Heather (52) and Patrick Colvin (41) put on 77 for the fifth wicket.

Apart from late salvoes from Matt Cooke (22 from 18) and Tommy Davies (18 from 15), no other Middleton batter scored above 11 as they stumbled to a score of 169 all out. In reply, Nomads knocked off the runs comfortably with more than eight overs to spare.

Middleton travel to second-place Roffey tomorrow (11.30am) looking for a surprise win to affect the title race.

In division three, Chichester Priory Park have been knocked out of the promotion places after their six-wicket loss to title rivals Haywards Heath.

Batting first, Chi struggled to get going, perhaps distracted by the two Spitfires flying above on the way to Eastbourne's Airbourne festival.

Their total of 115 all out was chased down with plenty to spare meaning they must win when they face fourth-placed Pagham at Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12pm). Pagham lost at home to Preston Nomads by four wickets last time out.

THE GLOVES were off at Selsey's Little Spain Bowling Club for the annual finals weekend.

In an excellent two days of play, dozens of people turned out to watch team mates play off against each other to lift some silverware for the season.

It started with the yardstick tournaments where 2015 John Ballinger beat club vice captain Bob Hughes 31-7 in the mens while John's wife Sylvia retained the trophy she won last year with a convincing 24-11 victory over club newcomer Jillie Ranscombe.

Club captain Iain Mayzes and Geoff Spicer took the men's pairs final.

Sylvia Ballinger then made it a Champagne day to remember when she linked up with another member, Chris Lankshear, to win the ladies' title Sunday saw Trevor Palmer make it five singles titles when coming from behind to beat Jim Lankshear 21-14.

Val Palmer then made it a successful day for the Palmers when she won her fourth club

singles title by beating Barbara Bond 22-10.

The weekend was rounded off with Archie Coletta (non-winners trophy final) and Chris Lankshear and John Ballinger (mixed pairs) scoring respective victories.

Elsewhere in division one of the West Sussex Bowls League, Bognor A rounded off their season with a convincing 102-51 victory over Southbourne.

The ten points secured lifted them above Chichester A to third in the table, although Chi still have two matches to play.

The Priory Park side lost ground, however, with an 84-78 defeat to Tarring Priory A, which ended their hopes of a top-two finish.

In division two, Pagham are up to fourth after a 90-61 victory over Witterings.

In division three, Middleton secured easy victories over Norfolk B and East Preston B to lift them into mid-table.

Chichester B remain three places above them in third after losing 96-66 to Petworth, in a defeat which ends their title hopes.

Selsey sit top after Goulding and Morey strike for the Blues

Pagham move on in FA Cup PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds is urging his side to keep their feet on the ground despite his unbeaten side producing an FA Cup shock to progress to the next round.

The Lions produced two fine performances to eliminate the higher division Sittingbourne after a replay in the preliminary round of the competition.

Next up is a trip to Isthmian South side Carshalton Athletic on September 2.

But, before then, Pagham must return to the SCFL Premier, hosting Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow (3pm) before travelling to Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But Simmonds, who took up the reigns alongside Richie Hellen in the summer, is urging his unbeaten side not to get too carried away with Tuesday's 1-0 win, secured by a late goal by the returning Terrell Lewis.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "We have started really well and are unbeaten so far but it is only a start and we have simply laid the foundations.

"We are taking one game at a time and now our full focus is on Peacehaven and then on to Lockwood. The key is not to get too far ahead of ourselves."

The replay only happened after a Scott Murfin strike secured a 1-1 draw at home to the Isthmian South side.

Then, at Sittingbourne, Lewis struck with ten minutes to play to secure a place in the next round and another pay cheque of £1,925 for the club.

Simmonds said: "On Tuesday we were superb. They came at us from the start but we did really well to stay in the match.

Then at half time we changed a few things around.

"We always knew that we would have a chance or two if we managed to stay compact and when that chance came we took it."

A further £3,000 could be banked by the Lions if they beat Carshalton in a week's time.

Simmonds said: "It's massive for us. We have got a real good team spirit here even though it's quite a young group. For us to play the way we did and beat a lot more experienced side over two games will do wonders for us."

He added: "The money is great for the club as, like every club at this level, you want to win as many games as you can as that money goes a long way."

TABLE-TOPPING Selsey will be looking to build on their good start to the season in SCFL Division One. The Blues continued their unbeaten start to the campaign last Saturday when goals from Ryan Morey and Ryan Goulding helped them defeat a strong-looking Hailsham Town team 2-0 at the High Street Ground.

But they lost that tag on Tuesday when they were beaten 4-1 at SCFL Premier Chichester City in the Peter Bentley Cup. Focus now switches back to the league where Steve Bailey's side have two games in the space of three days.

First up is a trip to Steyning Town tomorrow (3pm) to play a side whose good home form on the 3G pitch propelled them to a top six finish last term.

The Barrowman have won their only match in the league 6-1 at Ringmer. Selsey are sure to prove a more serious test - they have previous over Steyning, winning 5-1 on their last visit on the last day of the previous campaign.

Then the Blues face Midhust & Eastbourne on Monday at home (11am), a side they have already beaten 4-1 in the cup this season.

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford is demanding more from his squad - despite his charges racking up two wins and scoring ten goals in less than a week.

The Lillywhites started the season slowly, losing their first two matches of the season.

But since then Chi have upped their game, winning the next three - including a 6-0 demolishing of Arundel in the SCFL Premier before defeating Selsey 4-1 in the Peter Bentley Cup. Despite the upturn in form, Rutherford believes there's a lot more to come from his

side - and he wants to see a difference in games at Saltdean United (tomorrow, 3pm) and at home to Lancing (Monday, 11am).

After the Selsey game, the Chi boss said: “To be honest, we were poor in the first twenty minutes or so and didn't play with our usual pace and intensity.

"The boys know it. When we play with pace in the final third, we're a match for most sides. We did that for maybe 25 minutes tonight but the challenge is can the lads do it for 90 minutes?”

But four goals in the space of six minutes decided the contest with Jack Lee (2), Rob Hutchings and Josh Clack getting on the scoresheet.

It was the second big win in just a few days after the league win over Arundel.

Josh Clack and Dave Herbert started the scoring before Lorenzo Dolcetti added to the tally in the second period.

Then Tafadzwa Kanjada, who is affectionately known as the Fuzz, bagged a hat-trick to seal the win. * Sidlesham will be looking to make it three wins from three to start their SCFL Division Two campaign when they host Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm).

Daren Pearce's side started the campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win at Worthing Town thanks to goals from Tom Atkinson, Mendes Borges (2) and Tom Bayley.

That was followed up with a 2-1 win over Clymping under the lights at The Rec, Tom Jefkins and Bayley getting on the scoresheet.

The Sids also welcome Rustington to The Rec on Monday (11am).

Bosham's defence of the title continues with away matches at Alfold (tomorrow, 3pm) and Ferring (11am).

The Robins started the season with a 6-0 victory over Lancing United with Callum Coker (3), Ben Neal, Bradley Miles and Andy Brown scoring in Gary Lines' first competitive match.

Chi Ladies defeated in season's opener CHICHESTER City Ladies face an uphill task to secure their first points of the FA Women's Premier South campaign.

The newly-promoted Green Army made their debut at the higher level with a frustrating 2-0 reverse at C&K Basildon last weekend.

Sunday sees Chi make their bow in the competition in front of their home crowd at Oaklands Park against Crystal Palace (2pm).

But they will need to be on their guard as the visitors won their opener 9-0 in a rampant display against QPR. Chi will be looking to use the energy and enthusiasm that kept them in the match against a strong Basildon side.

stages from Chichester After only five minutes they were behind to a sensational goal from April-Rose Bowers who picked her spot with a superb curling effort.

As the half wore on the nerves certainly ebbed away for the green army and the likes of Cherelle Khassal and Charley Wilson-Blakely were seeing a lot more of the ball.

Jess Lewry's shot was easily saved and a Khassal volley was straight at the home side's keeper. After the break, Basildon doubled their lead after a shot was parried into the path of Danica Revell.

Chichester, to their great credit, never gave up but Wilson-Blakely and Khassal spurned chances to open their side's scoring account for the season.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes his Rocks squad will be unfazed by the return of former manager Jamie Howell to the Nye Camp.

Howell stepped down from the top job to take up the reigns at Eastbourne Borough just a few days after Bognor secured promotion to the National League South.

With the season less than a month old, the former Rocks skipper will bring his new side to Nyewood Lane on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

Before then, Pearce will take his unbeaten Rocks side to the familiar surroundings of East Thurrock United tomorrow (3pm).

But he insists that, despite the history and the happy memories of Howell's time at the helm, there will be no time for sentiment when the two Sussex sides meet.

Pearce said: "It doesn't affect us at all. I'm sure he will want to do well but we want to do well too.

"I'm sure that it will be the first of many times he comes back to Nyewood Lane and we wish him well in his new role at a new club.

"They will want to beat us But we will be doing what we always try to do and that's pass the ball better than the opposition and eventually win the game."

The Rocks go into this round of fixtures in sixth position after winning two and drawing three of their matches so far. The latest match was a 1-1 draw against Weston-Super-Mare

on Saturday.

After falling behind to an early goal, Dan Beck's second half header drew Bognor level.

But, despite the Rocks being the highest scorers in the league, they were unable to convert one of a number of chances to seal the victory against a side who are in the relegation zone and who played an hour of the match reduced to ten.

Pearce said: "It's fair to say that we dropped two points when you consider that after they went down to ten men we created more than enough chances.

"We were only looking for one. I thought we had five or six really good opportunities and didn't really finish.

"It's disappointing but these things happen and in the half hour when they had 11 players they were more than useful.

"If you look at their position in league it shows how strong the league is. There's no easy games out there."

Bognor look sure to be tested in the coming days. East Thurrock United are currently third having won three of their five matches so far.

Having netted 14 in those games, only Bognor have scored more so far this campaign.

Then it is on Eastbourne Borough who are 16th in the 22-team division but go into the match off the back of an impressive 1-0 win away at Truro City last weekend.

'Injuries could start to hurt us' IT took less than a month of the season for it to happen - but already Bognor are facing one of their customary injury crises.

Rocks fans have become used to the fact that a small squad can sometimes lead to difficulties. With just five games just gone in the National League South campaign, boss Jack Pearce has one of those all to familiar selection headaches.

Last weekend's match against WestonSuper-Mare pushed Bognor's squad to the limits - with Ollie Pearce joining the injury list after picking up a groin strain.

Ahead of a bank holiday weekend of two matches in three days, the Rocks have four players who are looking doubtful - Jimmy Muitt, Pearce, Corey Heath and Doug Tuck.

While manager Jack Pearce says he is looking for short-term solutions, he admits it is not easy to do given the short period of time. He said: "It's difficult with the amount of injuries that we have. As it stands, we are in for a challenging weekend so we need a few signings to help us for Monday.

"We can only sign people for Monday by 5pm on Friday so it's not going to be easy. But we will review things at training and I'll make calls to see if we can get some players."

AFTER missing the first four games of the season due to getting married and my honeymoon I'm back.

A break is always nice, whatever time of the year it comes, but it was great to get back into action on Saturday in front of the home crowd against Weston-Super-Mare.

While I've been away, I've been keeping up with results and watching the highlights of every game which are available now of every side in the division.

After seeing how we have been getting on, I was quite looking forward to getting back to playing.

The team has been on fire to start the season and it's great to see how well Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce have been playing.

Ollie, in particular, I don't think I've ever seen him play this well, which is fantastic.

Where we need to improve is our defensive work and keeping it tight to make sure we make the most of scoring those goals.

The league is a lot different to the Isthmian Premier.

There are a lot of teams that keep the ball extremely well for long spells.

That means that we need to work really hard on shoring up at the back, as a team in the Isthmian we could get away with an expansive level of play.

At this level, you know that if a side gets a chance nine times out of ten they will score.

It's something that I have to think about and perhaps consider changing my game as I have been quite an attacking full back pushing forward at every opportunity.

Now, when we are perhaps not dominating possession, I have to be more disciplined in terms of when I go and how for I go forward.

It's something I'm looking forward to developing and improving on over the course of the season.

In terms of Saturday, it was disappointing not to get the

victory. If you look at the chances we had before they had a player sent off then we had three very good ones.

But Ollie went on his left foot rather than his right when through on goal, Alex Parsons was tripped which led to their red card and Sami missed a header.

Then after that we had a further eight chances where we should have scored but we did not put our chances away.

If you look at all of that then on reflection I think it is two points dropped rather than one gained.

We move on, though, to this weekend when we have two tough games ahead.

East Thurrock we know quite well and I have played against them six or seven times.

They are a decent team who play with a quick tempo and they have a front four get a lot of goals at their place.

But we also know the atmosphere is dead - there is never anything going on which is to our advantage.

But they have done really well since going up, we know what they are about and have to be on their mettle Then we have Eastbourne Borough and the return of Jamie Howell.

It will be strange as I never played against him when he was at Burgess Hill and there are some of our set pieces which he designed so the calls will have to be changed.

But, in terms of him coming to the Lane, all of the pressure is on him.

We could quite easily win both or lose both. But we will take them together and maybe set ourselves a target of four points from the two.

We will also come up against Gary Charman who has joined Eastbourne on loan.

He has been a stalwart for the club and a man mountain for me personally and for everyone at the Lane. I do wish him and Jamie all the best - although not until after Monday!
