THe temporary version of Universal Credit is already seeing some of the poorest residents facing waits of up to six

weeks, advisors have warned.

Helpers at the Bognor Regis Town Hall bureau of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice expect the numbers struggling to grow rapidly from next April when the benefit is fully adopted.

THey say many people are facing uncertainty about how much money they will receive and when it will arrive, which leaves worries about paying bills.

Carol Groves, chief executive of Arun

and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: “THe principles behind Universal Credit are sound but a mix of flaws in how the benefit was designed and problems with how it is being delivered is leaving many people’s finances in tatters.

“We’re already helping many people across Arun and Chichester who are having problems with Universal Credit.

“We are concerned this will rise significantly from April, 2018. By 2022,

it will affect thousands of households across the area.

“If the government doesn’t fix significant problems with Universal Credit, then many families across Arun and Chichester may be put at financial risk, which can, in turn, put huge pressure on other local services such as health, housing and social care.”

THe volunteers, assisted by PC Tom Van Der Wee, of the Chichester Response Unit, attended incidents including drinkdriving, theft and domestic abuse.

THey gave up their own free time to respond to emergency calls and community priorities as part of the latest specials operation.

PC Van Der Wee said: “Special constables have all the powers of their police constable colleagues and wear the same uniform. However, special constables are unpaid and give up a minimum of 16 hours a month to volunteer in their community.

“Special constables are trained to attend a wide variety of incidents, and provide support to regular officers when attending emergency and nonemergency calls.

“In Chichester and Arun, we regularly run operations with the special constables targeting policing priorities such as drink and drug-driving, and other more local community concerns.

"THese operations provide a valuable opportunity for special constables to work with other specials and gain more experience by dealing with incidents independently of their police constable colleagues.

“We will continue to run these operations on a regular basis, and our

priorities will include targeting drink and drug-drivers, arresting wanted persons and conducting plain-clothed checks on shoplifters.”

One incident took place at 3.43pm on Sunday, July 30, when police were flagged down outside Chichester Police Station by a driver who reported being assaulted by her front seat passenger.

A 16-year-old boy from Chichester was arrested and charged with assault.

At about 4.56pm on the same day, police were called after a man’s phone was stolen in Westgate car park, in Via Ravenna, Chichester.

THe victim was a 19-year-old man from Chichester, who has learning difficulties.

Witnesses are asked to report it online quoting serial 950 of 30/07.

And at about 8pm, police were called to reports of men using dogs to chase hares in Lower Hone Lane, Bosham. Witnesses are asked to report it online quoting serial 1222 of 30/07.

THe team also responded to several other call-outs throughout the weekend, and carried out a number of vehicle stops and checks.

Special constable Philip Matthews said: “Not only does this operation provide me with the opportunity to work alongside other special constables in Sussex Police, but working as a team, which is led by a police constable, we will target criminal activity on the road network, deal with anti-social behaviour and assist with local neighbourhood priorities.”

Also out in force were special constables James Steer, Callum Meeney, Jared Gobey and Jake Sloane.

Bid to fight dental phobia

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk STUNNING flowers and plants and huge and impressive vegetables were on show at this year's Lavant Flower Show.

Organisers said the number of entries exceeded expectations as many green fingered fans brought in their best entries for the competition, run by the Lavant Horticultural Society.

Roger Hart, show secretary, said: "It went extremely well. It was chock-ablock with good quality entries. We have always prided ourselves on having a good show with plenty of good entries.

"But this year it was exceptional. THere were far more than we have had in recent years. It was very encouraging."

THere were entries for all varieties of flowers, plants and vegetables from the best beetroot, won by Michael Kingsford, to the longest runner bean won by Stewart Clarke to the best roses, won by Meg Owen. THe show also gave out prizes for the best home produce including fruit cake, chocolate brownies, jam, chutney, biscuits and scones.

Mr Hart added: "It's a real community event. We welcome entries from all

residents and allotment holders. THere are more people entering now who aren't members of the society. It's a fun thing to do.

"I was afraid that the wind and rain that we had just a few days before would have affected the number and the quality but that didn't stop there being a high number and good quality of entries."

A DENTAL practice has announced a new partnership with leading charity Anxiety UK to raise awareness of dental phobia.

Centre for Dentistry, the dental practice in Sainsbury’s which has a branch in Chichester, wants to improve the support for people suffering with dental anxiety.

According to statistics from the Oral Health Foundation, almost half of UK adults have a fear of the dentist, with 12 per cent of these suffering from an extreme dental anxiety or phobia.

In addition, visiting the dentist is ranked number one for making people nervous – above a fear of heights.

Lisa Riley, chief executive at Centre for Dentistry, said: “THis exciting partnership represents a real opportunity to have a positive impact on the nation’s oral health.

"New patients often say to us that they have put off going for so long as they are afraid it might be painful or because they have had a bad experience many years ago.

"It’s a pleasure seeing the transformation of these same patients as they work with our dentists to successfully overcome their dental fears and get back into routine dentistry.

"With the support of Anxiety UK, we want to raise the profile of dental anxiety in the UK and encourage people who may have been avoiding going to the dentist due to fear to seek help and take those first steps.”

Keep eye out for thieves POLICE are reminding supermarket shoppers across Sussex to be on the alert for thieves.

It follows a recent spate of incidents in which supermarket customers, and some other shoppers, have been watched while entering their PIN numbers and have had their purses and wallets stolen as they leave the store.

Suspects then withdraw large amounts of cash from nearby cash machines.

It is believed those involved have been successful in obtaining nearly £20,000 by targeting victims in this way. Since November last year, there have been 22 such reports in Sussex; including at Sainsburys in Chichester on June 19. THe amount taken was not confirmed.

Investigator Kayleigh Bartup said: "We are also working with the large supermarket brands to raise awareness about these incidents among staff and customers.

"Be alert and aware of strangers when shopping in large supermarkets and never leave your bag or trolley unattended at any point. Try not to be distracted by strangers, and also be alert for any suspicious activity around your vehicle which you should keep secured.

"It appears that these men, and others, may strike up to twice a day in different towns, and then lay low for a while, so we need to maintain awareness even when there are no reports."

Restaurant owner hired illegal worker

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A TAKEAWAY director has been disqualified for six years after he was found to be employing illegal workers.

Masum Ahmed, 44, director of India Gate restaurant, in St Pancras, Chichester, has been disqualified for six years for failing to comply with immigration law.

THe disqualification prevents Mr Ahmed from directly or indirectly becoming involved in the promotion, formation or management of a limited company until July, 2023.

Robert Clarke, senior investigator, said: "THe Insolvency Service rigorously pursues directors who fail to pay fines imposed by the government for breaking employment and immigration laws.

"We have worked closely in this case with our colleagues at the Home Office to achieve this disqualification.

"THe director sought an unfair advantage over his competitors by employing individuals who did not have the right to work in the UK in breach of his duties as a director.

"THe public has a right to expect that those who break the law will face the consequences.

"Running a limited company means you have statutory protections as well as obligations.

"If you fail to comply with your obligations then the Insolvency Service will investigate you."

Mr Ahmed’s disqualification follows

an investigation by the Insolvency Service, which found he had failed to comply with statutory obligations under immigration law.

He failed to ensure relevant immigration checks were completed and documents retained.

THat resulted in the employment of an illegal worker.

Consequently, a penalty notice of £15,000 was then issued by the Home Office.

Chi Spice Limited, the official company name for India Gate, was placed into liquidation on August 18 last year.

At the time, there was an estimated deficiency to creditors in excess of £55,000.

Meanwhile, a Home Office spokesperson added: "Illegal working is not victimless.

"It undercuts honest employers, cheats legitimate job seekers out of employment opportunities and defrauds the taxpayer.

"Businesses should be aware that they have a duty to check that their staff have permission to work in the UK. "We are happy to work with employers who play by the rules but those who do not, should know that they will not go under our radar."

THe Insolvency Service is an executive agency sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

It administers the insolvency regime, and aims to deliver and promote a range of investigation and enforcement activities both civil and criminal in nature, to support fair and open markets.

Group to campaign against pension changes for women WASPIS will be flying high with the Birdmen in Bognor Regis this weekend.

Members of the campaign group's Bognor and Chichester South Coast branch will have an information stall on the second day of the worldfamous event.

THe Women Against State Pension Inequality is campaigning against the way the state pension age for women was rapidly increased from 60 to 66.

Jill Robertson founded the branch about five months ago after the Post reported her anger about the situation.

She said: "THe organisers of the International Bognor Birdman have

given us a stall pitch, which we think is too good to miss.

"We only heard about it last THursday but we will be there on Sunday.

"Last week’s media coverage on the main televised news has seen the WASPI reach new heights.

"THe government is starting to look up and realise that there has been something crucially wrong with changing the state age pension for 3.5 million 1950's women. Equalisation isn’t the issue, the lack of notice and the way it has been handled is."

Some group members say the delay in paying the state pension will cost them thousands.

Tea lover creates a unique brew for city of Chichester

Heron Cottage Artisan Teas is an independent tea business that is based in Selsey.

THe teas are created for flavour and health. Now, owner Steve Lawrence has created Chichester Tea. A green tea - Yerba Mate, it also contains Rose Petals, Elderflower, Golden Mulberries and Italian Lemon Peel.

Steve describes the flavour as floral, sweet and gentle on the taste buds.

Steve said: "I have always had an interest in health and wellbeing so it seemed, as a tea lover, only natural to create herbal teas.

"I have over 35 different teas and they are already proving popular.

"Heron Cottage Artisan Teas came about through my love of the great British beverage - tea and my long held interest in health and wellbeing.

"I started up only three months ago and I am sure that I have finally found my niche."

Take on walk for hospice PEOPLE are being invited to take part in a walk across Sussex to raise money for hospice's across the area.

THe Friends of Sussex Hospices Walking Trail will take place on Saturday, September 23.

It is the UK’s only permanent long distance footpath dedicated to hospices.

THe 200 mile trail has been two years in the making and is made up of 26 linear walks, which vary from between four and 11 miles.

THe Friends of Sussex Hospices charity has for 21 years been raising funds for hospices across both counties and to date has distributed £1.5m through their many and varied fundraising activities.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester has received their support and is fielding teams of walkers and event marshals.

THe launch event is a simultaneous relay and to take part, walkers need to download the iFootpath App and the walk of their choice.

THen visit hospicestrail.co.uk/ register-your-team to select the walk, nominate a hospice and register.

THe fee of £80 (for 2-8 people) will go to the hospice of their choice.

Jerry Doyle is the head of fundraising and communications at St Wilfrid’s.

She said: "We are delighted to be involved with this exciting new venture and greatly appreciate all the support given by the Friends of Sussex Hospices, and all those who help raise money on the day.”

Crafty fun for all as local firm raises cash for hospice to mark anniversary A LOCAL business celebrated its 10th birthday by holding an open day with lots of activities for young and old.

THe Eternal Maker in Terminus Road was celebrating 10 years in business.

Owned and run by Anna Hodgson, it was firstly run with her mother, Sarah, and now with her partner Philip.

Shop manager Rachael Chalcraft said: "We have always been local to Chichester and have a loyal customer base and making community.

"THe event saw us celebrate our 10th anniversary with goodie bags and offers for our

customers. THere were opportunities for people, adults and youngsters alike, to learn to knit or crochet on the day and to take part in a variety of crafty activities including pompom making, fabric origami, shoelace and skirt making.

"We also held a Makers Fair with local makers running their own stalls in an additional marquee. It all added up to a fun-filled day with lots of opportunity to get creative and have fun with making."

THe event raised money for St Wilfrid's Hospice and the raffle alone raised more than £330.

By 2022, Universal Credit will affect 12,000 households across Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, 8,000 around Chichester, 6,000 in the Arundel and South Downs area and 9,000 in West Worthing.

Universal Credit was launched to simplify the benefits system and support people into work.

At present, a temporary – or ‘live service’ – version is available to people around Bognor Regis with straightforward claims.

But next April will see the ‘full service’ version arrive to mean that anyone who would have previously claimed one of the old benefits, like tax credits or housing benefits, has to apply for Universal Credit.

Across the country, one in four (28 per cent) working age households will be

claiming Universal Credit.

More than half of them, 54 per cent, will be working.

THe benefit will also be claimed be 52 per cent of all families with children in the UK and 58 per cent of households where an adult is disabled or has a long term health condition.

But research by the national Citizens Advice office has shown a wide range of administrative challenges which must be overcome for Universal Credit to be a success.

THese include problems with the online system and long waits to get help over the phone.

THe difficulties worsen the rule which makes new claimants wait six weeks for any payment to force many into debt.

THe report called for the government to pause the acceleration of ‘full service’ Universal Credit to enable the major problems to be fixed.

Its recommendations include cutting the time people have to wait for their first payment and improving support to enable people to make ends meet.

Mrs Groves urged anyone who was having problems with Universal Credit to contact their nearest Citizens Advice Bureau.

National award recognises the efforts of council car park team THE CAR parks team at Chichester District Council has won a national award to recognise the variety of new services that have been introduced in the district in order to make it easier for people to park.

It also recognised the council’s plans for future improvements to its car parking services.

Paying by phone, contactless and card payments, website improvements and the remarking of bays have all been introduced to respond to customer feedback.

THis is in addition to introducing pay on foot at the Avenue de Chartres car park in Chichester, which has also seen significant improvements to the building.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: “One of the most popular services that we have introduced has been ‘Mi Permit’, which enables you to pay for parking from your mobile phone or app.

"Since its introduction, it has been used over 18,500 times across the district.

"It also provides customers with a reminder by text when parking time is about to run out, with the option to extend time if customers choose to do so.

"We’ve also received positive feedback from local businesses because people are less inclined to have to run back to their car when their time is up – and so it’s great for the local economy.

“We were also one of the first councils in the country to introduce a large number of machines offering contactless payment.

“Over the past few years we have worked incredibly hard to improve our services for our customers and to modernise our facilities.

"We’ve made significant changes within a short period of time and so it is great that this work has been recognised through this award.”

Fiesta returns THE UK's biggest chilli festival is returning to the city this weekend.

Ladies battle with weather

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk IT WAS one of the highlights of the festival as women donned their fabulous dresses and put on their fascinators for Ladies Day at this year's Qatar Goodwood Festival.

THe racecourse was lit up with bright colours and big hats as ladies packed out the site for another fun day of racing.

It was day three of the five-day festival which ended on Saturday.

And despite strong winds and occasional downpours, that didn't stop

the crowd from having a good day out.

It started off with 12 celebrity ladies gathering in the parade ring for the Magnolia Cup. THis year it has raised around £200,000 for the mental health charity Place 2 Be. THe race was won by Dido Harding on Duck and Dumplings, trained by Scott Dixon.

Day four of the festival saw the sun finally make an appearance and there wasn't an umbrella in sight.

Meanwhile, Saturday, the busiest day of the festival, started off brighter, bringing a close to five fun-filled days of racing.

Farmer bags major award A FARMER from Chichester has won a prestigious award.

Chris Moncrieff, a farmer for Vitacress in Chichester, has been rewarded for his excellence at this year’s prestigious M&S ‘Farming for the Future’ awards.

THe awards took place at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells.

Chris won the outstanding producer award following his dedication to the working relationship with M&S that has spanned over 35 years.

Vitacress supplies herbs, potted herbs and tomatoes to M&S stores across the UK, and Chris has been at the helm of an endless stream of innovative ideas that have improved the range and quality of produce available to M&S customers.

Set to retire from Vitacress this summer, the M&S team nominated Chris to recognise his significant contribution to the M&S business.

A FUNDRAISER from West Sussex is preparing to scale Africa’s highest peak after two local trampoline parks helped him hit his target.

Ali Kerr, 19, had set himself the challenge of raising £3,000 for charity Childreach International in order to journey to Tanzania and climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

When he came up short with his fundraising efforts, the owners of Flip Out trampoline parks in Chichester and Southampton, where Ali was working, stepped in and offered to donate the rest of the money.

A student at Southampton Solent University, Ali will leave on Tuesday to prepare for his seven-day trek up the dormant volcano which is so large it has its own rainforest.

Ali said: “I’m not an experienced climber, but I’ve been training on Cadair

Idris in Snowdonia, which is one sixth the size of Kilimanjaro.

“Apparently, it takes five-and-a-half days to climb the volcano and just oneand-a-half to come down.

“I’m sure the trek will be hard work, but hopefully I’m ready for the adventure and to raise money for a good cause."

As part of his trip, Ali will be visiting Childreach International’s foundation and learning more about how the charity sets up schools in poorer areas to help African children reach their potential.

Richard Wootton, director of Flip Out Chichester, said: “When Ali told us about his goal to raise the funds to climb Kilimanjaro, we were only too happy to help him reach his final target.

PropertyNews IN 1921, over 75 per cent of homes in the UK were rented, with just 25 per cent being owner occupied.

Up until the mid-to-late 1960s, more people rented their home than owned it.

It was only after this, with the proliferation of house building after the Second World War and the selling off of council houses, when more people started to buy their own homes instead of renting them.

THe increasing availability of finance from banks and building societies enabled this trend to accelerate, which kick-started a huge increase in property prices.

Whilst house prices remained relatively stable throughout the UK in the 1950s and 60s, they suddenly leapt 400 per cent in the 70s and a further 170 per cent in the 80s before flat-lining throughout most of the 1990s (as people suffered from the effects of Black Wednesday and the 15 per cent interest rates that went with it). THe ‘noughties’ witnessed an overall rise of 109 per cent, as the latter half saw house prices drop after the credit crunch.

Like the rest of the UK, in Chichester, the trend towards home ownership has stalled slightly of late - 33,481 households in Chichester were owner-occupied in 2011, up from 32,138 in 2001.

However, when you consider the total number of households in the area grew from 45,796 to 49,848 in this time, home ownership actually dropped in Chichester from 70 per cent to 67 per cent between 2001 and 2011.

With this drop in the percentage of people who own their home in Chichester, there is an increasing number of people looking to rent.

Some do so out of choice, whereas many more are unable to afford to buy. Most commentators agree that the overall level of homeownership is likely to continue to fall throughout the country.

While I don’t envisage a complete reversal in the trend of the past 50 years, it is clear that there will be a growing demand for good quality rental property in the area.

` Fun at picnic DISABILITY charity United Response is welcoming the community to its third picnic in Bognor Regis today.

THe open air celebration is taking place from 10.30am-3pm around the bandstand in Hotham Park.

A range of stalls and activities will be there to be enjoyed. THey will include cake decorating, an organic allotment-grown vegetable stall, a book stall and a tombola as well as a picnic lunch.

All funds raised from the day will go towards United Response's mental health services in the town, such as buying seeds for its allotment.

Today's picnic will also be the first to feature an art exhibition with pieces from the charity's bi-weekly art group for people with mental health needs.

Works of art will include pictures using various medias, such as pencil, watercolour and pastel, art poems, handmade cards and jewellery. THey will be displayed creatively in the park using trees and bushes. THe exhibition has been planned, curated and organised by those who attend the art group.

It has been made possible by a grant through United Response's Small Sparks programme, funded by the Clothworkers' Foundation.

THese grants enable the people supported by United Response to be active members of the wider community.

An information stand will enable people to find out more about United Response's services and other organisations like the Sussex Recovery College.

Amanda's inspirational book NEVER stop reaching for the sky, that's the message of a Yapton woman's debut book.

Mum-of-four Amanda Worne has this week seen the release of The Sky is Not the Limit that charts a year of her life following a cycling accident that left her wheelchairbound.

THe book, written under her pen-name Amanda Newton, compiles her Facebook posts from that year alongside reflections written at a later date.

Yesterday's release date was particularly meaningful to Amanda as it marked exactly two years since she was told she would never walk again.

However, Amanda has managed to see the past couple of years in a positive light.

THe publication sees a long-time ambition come into fruition.

She said: "It was always my childhood dream to write a book. I used to string together bits of paper to make books and write little stories on them.

"I never would have written this book without the accident. In a way, a door shut but many opened and, for that reason, I wouldn't change my life.

"THe accident inspired me to live life to the fullest. I would cycle down that hill again."

Until the accident, Amanda was an avid cyclist and was training for a half Ironman triathlon. On August 9, 2015, she set off alone for a 56 mile ride as part of her training.

When cycling down Bury Hill, she discovered her brakes weren't working. As a result, she hit a sign at the bottom of the hill and became paralysed.

She was in hospital the next day when she used Facebook to let her friends know what had happened, which led to a year of online updates and, ultimately, The Sky is Not the Limit.

Amanda explained how it all began.

She said: "It started as a mistake, I never intended to write a book.

"I posted a selfie on Facebook the night after I found out I would never walk again.

THe idea was just to let my friends know that I was still alive and to stay positive.

"I told them I would keep them updated and I did just that.

"In fact, one day I didn't post anything and everyone was messaging me asking where I'd gone!"

Keeping people informed via social media was therapeutic for Amanda as it became her journal during her five months in hospital.

"Facebook was like a diary for me. I often say to people that while I was in hospital it was a window into my heart.

"It was really helpful for me to get messages on social media during that time. THe support from all over really kept me going," she said.

However, she hadn't realised that her words had been supporting others too.

She said: "I thought it would all stop once I was out of hospital but so many people still wanted to hear from me.

"I had one friend who told me I'd helped them keep going after they'd been diagnosed with cancer. THere are people that I don't even know that I've helped."

THis is what Amanda aims to continue with the release of her book.

"If anything, I'm hoping it brings smiles to readers' faces, or if they've experienced something similar I hope they can see that it's not the end.

"And I'm just an ordinary person as well.

I'm a middle-aged mum of four so I hope people can relate to me."

Tributes paid to the life and activities of former mayor FURTHER tributes have been paid to a former mayor of Bognor Regis.

THe funeral of Paul Beckerson was held yesterday in Leigh-on-Sea where he lived and worked until his death from respiratory failure aged 68 last month.

As reported, it will be followed by a memorial at 7pm next Friday at THe Station pub in Bognor Regis. Everyone who knew Paul in his roles as a town councillor, town council officer and DJ over many decades in the town is invited to go along.

Paul's wife, Lyanne Beckerson, said she had fond memories of him.

“Paul helped to organise the Birdman Rally when he was in Bognor Regis and he was very much a man who wanted to get involved in events.

“THat was shown in Leigh-on-Sea when he led the town council in taking over a community centre that was going to close.

He was one of those people who made things happen," she said.

“He was very amenable as a person. He was always looking to help the community and he loved helping people.

“Leigh-on-Sea had been very good to him. It was the right thing for him to move here. He adored Bognor Regis and it was always his home but, in terms of his career, he wanted to move on.

“He wanted to be in a position where he was in charge and could make things happen – and that’s what he managed to do. He was very much a social politician.”

Paul had survived oesophageal cancer after an operation and five months of

chemotherapy. He only needed a few days off work and made a return to full health.

He retired last December and set out to study for a history degree but he developed a lung infection last Christmas.

THis developed into pneumonia and led to the respiratory failure from which he died on July 17 in Southend Hospital surrounded by his family.

Donald Fraser said in an eulogy for Paul's funeral: "THose of us who got to really know Paul are sad at the loss of a great man. As soon as I met Paul seven years ago, I was most impressed.

"Like me, Paul was a great one for detail.

He had a real working knowledge of the numerous rules and regulations covering all aspects of town council activities.

"When Paul started here, he had two

staff and two rooms. By the time he retired, he had ten staff and nine rooms.

"He really put heart and soul into the job, working many hours of unpaid overtime.

Paul did good work allowing us to become a Quality Council and spent valuable time in helping to train his successor."

He and Lyanne soon became active members of St Clement's Church in the Essex town where his funeral was held.

` Suspect sought after charity theft POLICE are seeking to identify the man in this image after a charity box was stolen from a Muslim centre in Bognor Regis.

THe suspect was seen to enter the lobby area of W S Muslim Society, in Spencer Street, and take the metal box which had been locked but not secured.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "He then entered the washing area in the premises, where he proceeded to empty an unknown quantity of cash from the box, which he left at the scene."

THe incident occurred around 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 26.

Anyone who recognises the man, or who has any information about the incident, is asked to report it online quoting serial 904 of 28/07.

Radio station offers mental health support SELFLESS volunteers from Bognor Regis hope to boost the reach of their radio station dedicated to mental health issues.

Radio Respect is believed to be the only station of its kind in the world and broadcasts 24 hours a day with feel-good music and sensitive discussions on mental health difficulties.

Now, the station, with an average of 60,000 listeners worldwide, has the chance to reach even more people after it has been given Community Interest Company status.

Following this recognition, founder Chris Collins is looking to broadcast Radio Respect on DAB alongside its current online domain.

Mainly though, Chris, aged 51, hopes the station can reach as many people as possible. He said: "THe need for this station really is there. THe fact that we have 60,000 listeners proves that.

"Radio Respect began life four years ago in my shed with only five listeners.

Primarily, I set it up to help keep people company. And in 2015 we moved to our premises here in Commercial House in Station Road."

Chris was inspired to give a voice to those with mental health issues having worked at daycare service House 48 in Bognor Regis.

He was keen to provide something that was always available. "With other services, they shut down at the end of the day but we're here the whole time. We're here 24/7," he said.

Now Radio Respect is run by 11 volunteers who are all based in Bognor Regis and live with mental health issues.

Some of them DJ for the station part-time and others are there as IT support and inhouse technicians.

Chris was extremely grateful for the work of the other volunteers. He said: "I have so much respect for our IT technicians, Reece Osborn and Tristan Williams, who work tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly.

"Last weekend, our server went down and if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have known what to do."

Most of the workers at Radio Respect were known to Chris through House 48.

Tony Lock, aged 50, was one such volunteer who initially persuaded Chris to develop the station into what it is now.

For Tony, the station opened up a great opportunity. He said: "I DJ'ed a lot in the 1970s in clubs and at parties but hadn't for a long time. It's great playing music here.

It's like an addiction."

Steve Ryman, 44, also enjoyed being one of the station's DJs. "I love it. When Chris told us about the station we all loved it and wanted to get involved.

"THere is still such a stigma surrounding mental health. It's nice to know we can talk about it and help others," he said.

Izzy Russell, 47, joined the team a couple

of months ago and is the first female DJ at the station. She said: "It gives me such a buzz, it's great to have a purpose like this."

THere was a definite sense among the volunteers that more still needs to be done to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Sammie Webb, aged 25, said: "Although mental health is now being talked about more, there is still more that can be done."

Twenty-one-year-old Edward Moorcroft, agreed. "Even though there are things like Mental Health Awareness Week, that's only a week, it's not there all the time like we are," he said.

For Richard Greenslade, 64, Radio Respect has become an important part of his life."Radio Respect cheers me up.

I'm still just a listener but I come along to meetings. It's nice to be involved," he said. Now Richard has even his own announcement for the radio to introduce Rod Stewart songs.

Alongside the station, the Radio Respect website also runs a chat-room so listeners can talk to each other as well as the team.

THrough this, Chris and the others have been able to provide constant support to those who want it.

Chris is proud of what the station has achieved and the potential it has for the future. He said: "We hope that one day mental health services can use us as a platform to help raise awareness of what's out there."

All fun and no sun indoors SUMMER fun has gone under cover with bad weather hitting Bognor Regis.

THis year's Funshine Days organised by Bognor Regis Town Council were moved indoors during the week as rain and wind swept the seafront.

THe poor conditions caused the music and movement workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday to be moved indoors to the Regis Centre's studio from their usual location at the bandstand on the prom.

Friends and mothers Jemma Hepburn, from Aldwick, and Alyson Livesey, from Felpham, both saw Tuesday and Wednesday's workshops advertised on Facebook. Jemma took her two daughters, aged ten and eight, and Alyson took her nine-year-old daughter.

Jemma said: "We came to the didgeridoo workshop and thought it was just brilliant. It was such a laugh and taught the children all

about the instrument and where it comes from and to learn about breathing too."

Wednesday's workshop organisers, Itara and Andy Mason, pictured right, from Workshop for Schools, travelled from Birmingham to host the event.

Itara said: "We've been really busy, even with the relocation. I really enjoy seeing the kids' faces and the excitement as they produce the music and try something new like the drums."

Susan Robbins, a nanny from Middleton, took Rafaella, aged four, along for the morning.

She said: "It's great you can just pop in and out when you want and it's available for all ages."

THe workshops are running throughout August with next week's theme of performance and art including a circus workshop and bubble performances. THe following week is Seaside Classics with Punch and Judy and donkey rides.

` Eastergate burglary A SLEDGEHAMMER was used by a burglar at an Eastergate property.

THe crook smashed the glass on the front door of the address in Barnham Road.

Sussex Police crime investigator THomas Carpenter said: "THe offender gained entry to the back garden and smashed the glass in the front door with a sledgehammer that was left outside the property. THe glass smashing is likely to have made a significant amount of noise at a time when the neighbouring sports field would have been busy.

"Fortunately, on this occasion, nothing was stolen. I am urging anybody who saw or heard anything suspicious, or has any information regarding this burglary, to contact police."

THe break-in happened between 8am and 3pm on July 28. Anyone with information should report it online at sussex.police.uk quoting 924 of 28/07.

PROPOSALS have been revealed for a new guest house in Bognor Regis.

Robert and Pauline Delaney have asked Arun District Council for planning approval to change the use of a family eight-bedroom house to a six-bedroom guest house. THe detached property is in Victoria Drive.

THe couple, who live in Felpham, say the current four parking spaces will stay.

Arun's economic development team has welcomed the plan. Business development manager Miriam Nicholls says in a statement: "We are always keen to see good visitor accommodation and our tourism officer is available to assist businesses to achieve good quality grading."

Tom scores dream job with League One team f An early 20th century view of Bognor Regis Pier

Pier into the past on special tours SPECIAL tours have been arranged of Bognor Regis Pier as part of a national celebration.

THe Bognor Regis Trust has organised the two explorations of the Victorian landmark next month. THey will take place at 11am and 2pm on September 10 for the Heritage Open Days project around the country.

THe initiative celebrates hidden heritage and community assets across Britain - and the Grade II-listed pier is a perfect example of that.

A trust spokesman said: "THe tours will enable visitors to see the beautiful example of Edwardian architecture now converted to a nightclub, retaining many features of the original theatre. THe visits will include a

guided walk and presentation about the history of the pier and its role in the town over the last 150 years."

Tickets for the free tours can be booked at eventbrite.co.uk THe trust is starting to devise a heritage trail for Bognor Regis after its successful drop-in day in June about the idea.

"We canvassed ideas for a heritage trail and various other trails - what we should include and gained ideas for new blue plaques, places of interest, buildings and open spaces.

"THe event was a massive success with lots of discussion about what these could include. THe hard work starts now - how to develop, deliver and fund the ideas for the trails."

A TALENTED Selsey footballer has made his professional debut in front of almost 13,000 fans.

Tom Broadbent, aged 25, stepped out as defender for Bristol Rovers on Saturday in his first League One match.

THe match was a culmination of a lifetime's passion for the sport. Tom acknowledged that this helped him overcome any nerves he might have encountered.

He said: "It was my debut match so I was excited to be there.

"I wasn't nervous. THere were a lot of people watching but that gave me a real buzz. Once the match kicked off I was able to block them out and just focus on the game."

Rovers met Charlton Athletic at the latter's home ground of THe Valley.

Although the result was a 1-0 loss for Bristol, that didn't mar the experience for Tom. "Obviously, we were disappointed with the result. But it was still great. I really enjoyed it," he said.

Football has always been important for Tom, who had previously played for Selsey FC, the Bognor Rocks, Pagham FC and Chichester City, but after joining the army at the age of 19, thought it would remain only a hobby.

He continued to play while in the forces and eventually went semi-professional two years ago.

Tom was playing for Hayes and Reading when he heard of an opportunity at Rovers. He had to sign off from the army and give a year's notice

to try out, something that proved a risk worth taking.

He said: "I just thought, I'm 25 now, I've got to take the gamble or else I'll be kicking myself. THe gamble paid off.

I don't know what I would've done if it hadn't."

Although he hadn't been signed off for a whole year, the army allowed him to leave early to take the position.

He credits his army career, some of which included touring in Afghanistan, to part of his success.

"THe army has given me more confidence in myself and better discipline," he said.

For Tom, landing the job is still an unbelievable achievement.

He said: "I've loved football since I

was a kid. When I found out I'd been successful I couldn't believe it.

"It was what I'd always wanted - a dream come true. It was crazy. " Although the transition to League One was daunting for Tom, he feels he adjusted easily. "It's quite a big step up to come from Hayes and Reading to Bristol Rovers but I've settled in nicely," he said.

Part of this is due to the backing of his family.

He said: "My family are really supportive and come to watch my games whenever they can. It's quite a journey for them to make so I really appreciate it.

"My mum's definitely happier with what I'm doing now rather than when I was in the army!"

Movie star Buster Keaton

THis summer the museum intends to share the stories of these brave men during a special exhibition.

THis exhibition on the Polish and Czech pilots in Sussex during the Second World War is to run from July 22 until the September 3 from 11am4pm each day (except on August 6 for the museum’s Family Day).

It will include explanation boards, a film on Polish and Czech airmen in Britain during the war and a new painting on Czech pilot Karel Kuttelwascher shooting down a German bomber on a night intruder mission.

THe museum hopes the exhibition will enlighten many as to the involvement of these nations in the Battle of Britain.

In March 1939 Czechoslovak Air Force pilots were ordered to lay down their arms when the Germans invaded their country. Many wished to continue the fight and escaped to Poland.

When this country was overrun seven months later, the Czech pilots made their way with Polish Air Force pilots to France where they served under the French flag during the Battle of France.

Following the capitulation of France in June 1940 many escaped to England.

THe Poles called Britain ‘the Island of Last Hope’.

On reaching England, the Polish and Czech fighter pilots, after language training (many could speak French but had no English) and conversion training to British aircraft were posted to RAF units and to newly formed Polish and Czech squadrons.

During the Battle of Britain the most

successful RAF squadron was the newly formed No 303 Polish Squadron which in six weeks claimed 126 enemy aircraft destroyed.

THe fighter pilot with most victories during the battle was Josef Frantisek, a Czech flying in a Polish Squadron.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh C T Dowding, Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, later wrote of the Polish and Czech pilots: “I must confess that I had been a little doubtful of the effect which their experience in their own countries and in France might have had upon the Polish and Czech pilots, but my doubts were soon laid to rest because all three squadrons swung into the fight with a dash and enthusiasm which is beyond praise.

“THey were inspired by a burning hatred for the Germans which made them very deadly opponents”.

Later in the war, the highest scoring night intruder pilot was Karel Kuttlewascher, a Czech flying in the RAF’s No 1 Squadron, who shot down 15 enemy aircraft whilst flying in a Hurricane fighter from RAF Tangmere over enemy occupied territory at night in 1942.

On July 22 the exhibition will be opened by Alexandra Kent, the daughter of Group Captain ‘Johnnie’ Kent, a flight commander with 303 Squadron during the Battle of Britain who later in THe war commanded a Polish Wing.

After the war he became the Station Commander of RAF Tangmere.

A positive attitude is key to unlocking a happier life I HAVE just come back from a very close friend's funeral.

Having sobbed all the way home from Winchester, I felt as if could hardly contain myself.

I needed to go to the supermarket to get some food in for the children, but just couldn’t face it.

It's weird isn’t it, that sometimes you can spend the day doing something utterly amazing, or something gut wrenchingly sad, but all around you people are going about their daily business seemly without a care in the world.

But that’s life and life goes on. It’s a cycle and an ever-moving wave of life, full of ups and downs, and highs and lows.

THe one thing that was said in the many speeches at this amazing funeral about my lovely friend Jonathan, was how his incredible attitude to life inspired so many people. He was blessed with extremely good looks, and was very charming.

But underneath the gorgeous appearance was a huge amount of heartache and pain. He encountered many family tragedies, (more than one would imagine in a lifetime) and was then faced with his own personal illness for the last three years of his life.

But all the way through life, he remained optimistic, positive and gave everyone time, love and a feeling of importance.

He had a massive positive impact on my life, and it has made me think hard just generally about how we choose to see things.

Question: do you think attitude is more important than facts? Is it more important than the past? THan education or money, or

inevitable.

THe only thing you can change is your attitude.

Don’t you think that life is ten percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it?

What about the pursuit of happiness? Surely this is a matter of choice...right?

It is a positive attitude we choose to express. It is not a gift delivered to our door each morning, nor does it come through the window. And it is certain that our circumstances are not the things that make us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never be happy again.

THe impact on your attitude to life is enormous.

It’s basically everything. How you see the world, how you treat people, how you feel when you wake up in the morning and what your thoughts are last thing at night.

THis man, my friend, was faced with a life threatening illness, and yet remained happy, positive, sure of himself and with his family.

He planned his own funeral, said his goodbyes to his children, faced the hardest things most of us will never have to do, but up until the last moment, his attitude was impeccable.

I talk about health so much, and the right foods to eat, how we can best conduct our lives, but no matter what any of us are facing, it's good to remind ourselves that we can't change things.

Bitterness, hatred, sadness are all negative emotions and normally the only person they effect is the person who feels that way. If we all just stop

to think how we try to change people, how we try and remain in control of everything, how we moan, bitch and complain!

But if we just let go and trust in the process of life, no matter what hard times we are facing, it could change everything in just one moment.

Whatever religion you are, or whatever your beliefs, I think this Buddha quote says it all: "Peace is a state of mind and every person has the ability to find peace through their own thoughts.

"Do not seek peace from another person, a different location or a different age.

"Peace must be found from the soul."

Our capital city is not the only place for top tipple Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

LONDON'S calling, sang THe Clash, so off I sojourned in search of a decent bottle of Burgundy and, virtue of serendipity, stumbled across El Vino at number 47 Fleet Street espying a most appetising menu and a wine-list that captivated my attention and lured me into the premises.

I proceeded to order a 2009 Pommard Ier Cru Les Épenots produced by Joseph Voillot and found it to be divine (2009 was a very good Burgundy year) with great structure packed with deep and ripe wild berry aromas and gamey flavours and great complexity without having to expend a three figure sum - quel délice!

London is a great money vacuum cleaner, nonetheless, so on my return to the provinces I popped into the Rose Green Co-Operative store and looked particularly into offers that will expire on August 15.

THe first white wine which caught my attention was a 2016 Australian Signal Post Chardonnay on offer at just £4.99 from a family vinery established in 1985 in South Australia.

THis wine can be consumed with food or on its own and is ripe and fruity and a

veritable bargain at this price!

For an offer price of £5.99 the Reserva Casillero del Diablo 2016 Chilean Sauvignon Blanc was a pleasant surprise and oozed citrus and peach flavours with a dry finish and has made me feel more amenable to Chilean whites!

For an extra 80 pence expended, the 2016 Cuvée Prestige Château Moulin De Launay Entre-Deux-Mers proved to be distinctive, given that it is a wine

produced on clay and limestone soil, and is one to add to your repertoire! THis wine is delightfully fresh and fruity, but with a crisp, dry finish and is a good starter wine for guests to whet their appetite, a wine for any season and ultimately a good stand-alone wine.

My final white wine selection at an offer price of £6.99 was the house wine of the chatterati - namely a 2016 Ned Waihopai River Sauvignon Blanc produced by

the excellent winemaker Brent Marris.

Suffice to say that this is a big wine characterised by green, grassy herbacity and exuding gunflint, being both bold on the nose and strong on the palate with a lovely combination of fruits and a long and pleasing finish - a great buy at this price.

In terms of reds, for the parsimonious among you, I chanced upon a 2015 THe California Red Shiraz Ruby Cabernet which, for a modest price of well under £5, could never be a headliner, but could just pass as a final party wine.

disappoint and inspired a sense of devilment in me to effect purchase thereof and noted that this wine oozes cassis and black cherry flavours with hints of coffee and dark chocolate and would admirably complement any red meat!

For a mere £6.49 the Muriel Vendimia Seleccionada 2015 Rioja proved to be good value being medium-bodied, plummy with hints of spice and decidedly smooth with soft tannins - one to procure post haste.

My final selection for £7.79 was a 2016 McGuigan Black Label Shiraz which was a wine bursting with flavour with ripe plum and blackberry jam to the fore and exuding spice with hints of vanilla and pepper and a wine I wholeheartedly recommend to you.

INGREDIENTS

1. Pour the stock into a pan and add the chicken, ginger and garlic. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, partly cover and simmer for 20 mins, until the chicken is tender.

Remove the chicken to a board and shred into bitesize pieces using a couple of forks.

2. Return the chicken to the stock with the noodles,

corn, mushrooms, half the spring onions and the soy sauce. Simmer for 3-4 mins until the noodles are tender. Ladle into two bowls and scatter over the remaining spring onions, herbs and chilli shreds if using. Serve with extra soy sauce for sprinkling.

Community News & Views SOCIAL action season is well underway as young people in the Arun district take on a series of projects.

National Citizen Service participants have been raising awareness of two of the area's charities, Coastal Mind and My Sisters' House.

THeir efforts in the scheme's summer programme have been given the seal of approval in a recent visit by the district's MP, Nick Gibb, pictured below with the young people.

Mr Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "It was a real pleasure to meet the group of 15 young people taking part in NCS. "THey were all engaging, confident people who have clearly enjoyed their four weeks and benefited from them."

National Citizen Service is a county-wide programme which brings together groups of 16-17-year-olds to help build their confidence, mix with different social groups and inspire longterm change through local community-based action projects.

THis includes residential trips and social action work.

Some 200 young people aged 15-17 from the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton area take part in NCS every year.

Elsewhere in the county, two other NCS groups have been raising awareness and fundraising for charitable causes in Chichester.

Last week, nearly £1,000 was raised at a community fair in Florence Park for the children's care charity - THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

And at Chichester College, another NCS group staged the first Chi Pride, generating £100 for the Sussex LGBT charity, Allsorts.

NCS is delivered in Arun and Chichester by West Sussex County Council. Its cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Stephen Hllier, said: "THe NCS is a fantastic programme and one that is accessible to all young people in West Sussex."

RESIDENTS in the Post Newspapers' area can have their say about important county-wide issues.

West Sussex County Council has launched Your Voice – The People’s Panel, a way for people in the area to make their views known.

Formerly known as the E-Panel, Your Voice is a community of people who have volunteered to be consulted regularly about local matters, many of which may affect them.

Anyone who lives in West Sussex can sign-up.

Once registered, members will receive links to surveys, reports and outcomes, as well as links to other public surveys – allowing them to give their views, see the results and find out how their opinions can influence key decisions.

County council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith said: “It is so important that we make sure our residents’ voice is at the centre of everything we do.

“As a county council, 80 per cent of our services are provided to our residents, so we need to consider their views with every decision we make.

“To help us do that, an E-Panel was developed to help us engage with people across the county. We have 6,000 local residents signed up to this already and they are regularly helping us to make decisions through the views they give on a whole range of issues.

“To get more people involved, and make sure the people we’re talking to are representative of our diverse county, we are updating this panel.

“Renamed Your Voice: The People’s Panel, we will be using both new and emerging digital channels to gather opinions, but also finding new ways to reach out to more people, in person and online.”

TWENTY-TWO members and supported of the Bognor Regis branch of NASS enjoyed a cream tea and raised more than £150 for the charity.

THe event, pictured above, took place at the Selsey home of the branch chairman, Anthony Tuffin, and his wife, Rosemarie. A raffle organised

by Clare Wilton, of Chichester, raised £60 of the total.

Mr Tuffin said: "Originally planned for the garden, tea was served indoors because of the rain but that did not spoil the event."

THanking the guests, he explained that Anklyosing Spondylitis was a painful form of arthritis and NASS helped sufferers by providing essential physiotherapy which was not regularly available on the NHS. THis was the fifth cream tea for Bognor Regis NASS and brought the total raised by them to more than £1,100.

THe National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society is the charity for people who have AS. THe condition is a

painful, progressive form of inflammatory arthritis. An estimated 200,000 people in the UK have it - that is twice the number of those who have Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

AS sometimes leads to irreversible fusing of the spine and it can also affect other joints, tendons and ligaments. Eyes, bowel, skin, lungs and heart may also be affected.

THere is no cure for AS. It is managed by a combination of pain relief and stretching exercises.

AS patients, mainly in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area, meet for gym and hydrotherapy exercise at 6pm on Wednesdays at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

It is funded by members' fees, fundraising events and charitable donations.

COMMUNITIES in the Post Newspapers area have been invited to apply for funds to protect them from flooding.

West Sussex County Council has made £500,000 available in the current year to help to pay for the essential work.

Applications for the Operation Watershed Active Community Fund are welcome from parish and town councils and community groups.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, said: "Operation Watershed is up and running once again for those community projects that protect people and properties from the risks of surface water and groundwater flooding.

"THousands of homes have already been protected from potential surface water or groundwater flooding and other flood-related issues thanks to Operation Watershed over the years, and there will be plenty more to benefit this year."

THe county council has approved its first batch of Operation Watershed applications for 2017/18. THe amount awarded reached £54,126.

THe criteria used to assess applications are: the scheme addresses recognised surface or groundwater flooding issues; has strong community support; demonstrates value for money; and will realise benefits for the community concerned.

Community groups, volunteer groups, town and parish councils within the county are all eligible to apply. Applications need to be supported by the area's county councillor.

THe county council advises those interested in obtaining the funding to apply as soon as possible. Previous years have seen the fund oversubscribed.

THose who have been successful this summer in getting backing include Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group's FLOW project with £3,590 towards equipment for volunteers.

THe project supports 11 parish and town councils on the Manhood Peninsula to work with residents and landowners on fixing and linking wetlands.

As part of its recruitment drive for volunteers, it needs basic tools and equipment to help with tasks such as ditch clearances and pond improvements. THose tools will be funded by the grant.

Another scheme to benefit is West Itchenor Parish Council's scheme to alter Itchenor Road Pond.

It has received £4,602 to change the pond wall to reduce the risk of overflowing and add a sleeper feature to retain water during rainstorms. Community volunteers have already completed hours of preparation work for the project.

THe pond was built to store water at a higher height than the adjacent road and surrounding farmland. It is often stagnant and polluted and has little value as a habitat or holding pool.

KITE flyers are being urged at a Bognor Regis event to enjoy their pastime safely.

UK Power Networks is using the Bognor Regis Kite Festival in West Park on August 26-28 to remind those taking part to be aware of overhead power lines around the country.

THe company runs the electricity network of more than 65,300km of overhead lines across London, the south east and east of England.

THese carry power to homes

and businesses at anything from 240 to 132,000 volts.

Emma Palmer, UK Power Networks' safety, engagement and education officer, said: "THe summer and autumn months are popular times for families and youngsters to enjoy bright and blustery days flying kites.

"Electricity can jump across gaps - just lightning - and it can kill. People often don't spot the danger when flying a kite near overhead lines."

COFFEE morning supporters in West Meads in Aldwick have taken their backing for a hospital to nearly £10,000.

THe regulars at the midweek social occasions have made their latest donation, pictured above, to the Friends charity at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

THe £700 charity took the total amount raised from the coffee mornings in the to £9,400.

Louisa Freezer, one of the organisers of the mornings, said: "We welcome anyone to this THursday coffee morning in West Meads Hall. It is lovely seeing newcomers to the neighbourhood settling down very quickly making new friends.

"THe hall is an extremely attractive and well equipped place, with a very wide choice of activities every day of the week."

THe get-togethers do not take place this month because many supporters are on holiday but they will start again on September 7.

County council offices had rich history as it played host to barns, cottages and stables

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum and Amy Roberts, collections officer AT THE north end of Tower Street, on the west side, is an area still known as THe Grange which currently houses the offices of West Sussex County Council.

THey were built in the 1960s as a large extension behind the main building.

Records for the land, mainly maps, have been found as early as 1246.

Back then, it was known as Common Barns, an area of barns, cottages and stables owned by the Dean & Chapter and by St Mary’s Hospital (the latter having a close called ‘Longcroft’).

A common barn was leased for seven years at £16 a year to THomas Cresweller in 1481.

A later descendant, John Cresweller, in his will of 1527, refers to ‘My shop with close adjoining to the common barns’ and to a mill house.

A barn with tenement adjoining with outhouses referred to as Blackhurst along

with the tithes of hay and grain was leased in 1533 for 31 years at £20 a year. THe tenant was expected to do all the repairs whilst the Dean and Chapter provided the rough timber.

On the night of March 29-30, 1654, a disastrous fire broke out which affected several local people.

THey lost quantities of barley, fodder, cattle and horses, farm equipment and household goods. One gentleman, George Butterly, lost the Parsonage House, valued at £40.

All involved made claims at the Quarter Sessions for the loss that collectively amounted to £1,050 but it is unlikely any help was given to them.

At some time between 1837 and 1840, THe Grange was built on the site of an earlier house.

It was constructed for William Cobden Rhoades (c.1790-1878) and his wife, Amelia Anne Rhoades (nee Newland), who had

married a few years earlier in October, 1829, in St Peter THe Less, Chichester.

Rhoades was a solicitor and was Mayor of Chichester in 1831.

THe Grange was a Victorian building described as a Gothic fantasy, inspired in design by the likes of Horace Walpole and Sir Walter Scott.

It incorporated building materials and internal features salvaged from older demolished properties.

Some of its stonework, like the carvings above the large bay windows, came from Halnaker House in Boxgrove, which was demolished when the manor was absorbed into the Goodwood estate.

THe inside of the house had features associated with the Gothic styling, including pointed doorways and windows, which contained diamond shaped glass panes.

A number of the wonderful carved fixtures and fittings from THe Grange now reside in THe Novium Museum’s collections.

THe oak staircase balustrade, and treads and risers were decorated with cherubs, birds, including a hooded hawk, fruit, flowers, and a bat.

THe hand rail has been carved in the shape of a serpent.

THe staircase was designed in the English style of the mid-17th century, although it is believed the serpentine handrail may have

been added at a later date when the staircase was installed within THe Grange.

THe newel post (a post at the head or foot of a flight of stairs, supporting a handrail) was carved in the shape of a lion’s head, and has subsequently been affectionately nicknamed Fred, by a former member of staff at the museum.

THe museum is also home to a carved oak overmantel from the building which sat above the fireplace in one of the rooms. It is dated to 1644 and shows biblical scenes.

Unfortunately, William and Amelia did not have any surviving children and as a result, upon his death in 1878, the estate was left to two of William’s nephews, the Rev Edward James Rhoades and Henry Tull Rhoades esq, both of Rugby, Warwickshire.

THe house had a number of successive owners and occupants including in 1881, the Rev John Frederic Maul, vicar of St Paul’s and chaplain to Chichester Infirmary. In the 1890s, the house was occupied by eminent explorer Admiral John Moresby.

We believe the final occupant of THe Grange was Miss Maude Alexandrina Craigie-Halkett, who remained in the house until 1939.

By the late 1950s, the building was in a poor state, and was subsequently demolished in 1962.

The Hospice Biographers - St Wilfrid’s Hospice St Wilfrid’s Hospice have a new and exciting opportunity for two volunteers, how would you like to become one of our Hospice Biographers? The Hospice Biographers will attend Day Services and give patients a chance to have their life stories professionally recorded, in confidence, on audio to provide comfort and a lasting memory so that their families will be able to hear their voices and memories for generations to come. Full training is provided over two days 9th & 10th October 2017 at Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, London, expenses will be covered.

Volunteers will need to be available to attend this training course and commit to recording life stories for one day a month for at least 12 months. Closing date: 31st August 2017.

The Treasurer would be required to attend approximately four committee meetings per year to report on the accounting and also prepare the report on accounts for the AGM of the charity.

Pagham lose ground at the top after PostSport home defeat as Chi continue to fly PAGHAM lost ground at the top of Sussex Division THree but Chichester Priory Park remain perfectly poised to take a promotion spot.

Stuart Hanks' Pagham side are now 23 points away from the top two positions after losing at home to Burgess Hill by 62 runs.

Chi, meanwhile, chalked up a 60 run win on the road at Bexhill seconds, leaving them second with just four games to play.

Both sides are on the road tomorrow, Pagham making the trip to Eastbourne seconds while Chi visit Preston Nomads. (both 12.30pm).

Hanks' side made a good start to the match against Burgess Hill, reducing the visitors to 32-3 after winning the toss and choosing to bowl. But anchored by 67 from opener Tom Trowbridge, Pagham's bowlers were unable to restrict Hill to below 200 as they reached 217-8 before declaring.

In reply, only Ryan Barratt (37) looked completely comfortable as wickets fell regularly before the home side were dismissed for 155, just two overs shy of the cut-off point in the rain-affected match.

Chi, meanwhile, made it five games

unbeaten with a remarkable comeback against Bexhill seconds.

After batting first, it took a score of 35 from Priory's number 10 James Stemp to push them over the 100 mark, eventually reaching 131 all out. In reply, Chi's bowlers performed excellently, with Matthew Geffen (5 for 29) and Abhishek Patel (3 for 22) starring as the hosts were bowled out for just 71.

In the Sussex Premier Division, Middleton will be hoping to complete their first match in a month as they welcome Hastings & St Leonards Priory to the Sports Ground tomorrow (12pm).

Last week's washout against Cuckfield, when the hosts were 105-4, was the third in a row for Sean Heath's side.

In division two, second-bottom Bognor Regis travel to second-placed Ifield tomorrow still looking to pick up points to avoid the drop.

THe quest took a blow last week with defeat on the road at Eastbourne by three wickets.An excellent 88 from Joe Ashmore gave Bognor hope but the hosts reached the total in just 31 overs. Bognor were also deducted five points for 'accumulated breach of disciplinary rules'.

CHICHESTER A continued their late season charge with a convincing 86-58 win over Norfolk A. THe victory secured Chi eight points as they closed the gap on Worthing and leaders Worthing Pavilion A at the top of the West Sussex Bowls League division one.

With four games to go, the team based in Priory Park have an outside shot of winning the title.

To do so, they must defeat league leaders Worthing Pavilion when they make the trip along the coast tomorrow (2pm).

After more than a week off, Bognor A return to action on Sunday (2pm) travelling to Southbourne before hosting East Preston A at Waterloo Square on THursday.

In division three, rain put paid to any hopes of action with Middleton's visit to Marine Gardens and Bognor B's match at Maltravers abandoned.

THis week sees fourth-placed Pagham host Arundel on Monday before playing

Witterings at home on THursday.

Meanwhile, third-bottom Bognor B travel to Worthing Pavilion B on Wednesday looking to put in a late season charge.

Elsewhere, they may only be friendlies, but there is a lot of pride at stake when Selseybased Little Spain BC meet their local rivals, Crablands.

Having lost at Crablands back in May, in their first match of the season by 12 shots, Little Spain turned the tables in the home fixture with a victory by 84 shots to 64.

THis means they won the two-legged match by eight shots overall and took the unofficial title of Champions of Selsey for this season.

THe heavy rain affected Little Spain's trip to East Preston and led to it being cancelled but the weather was much better for their journey to the Witterings.

THe result was not so good as they suffered a 21 shot defeat despite winning on two of the five rinks.

CROSS COUNTRY: Chichester Runners' James Baker continued his fine form winning the Henfield Joggers' leg of the West Sussex Fun Run League with ease. New system falters for Chi as Binfield dump City out of cup

Young Lions win opener PAGHAM joint-manager Richie Hellen says his side is raring to kick-start their league campaign - even if the Lions will come up against some familiar faces.

THe Nyetimber Lane side opened their campaign last weekend with a 4-0 win over fellow SCFL Premier side Arundel in the FA Cup extrapreliminary round.

THat performance backed up an impressive pre-season for the Lions, who remained unbeaten throughout a challenging schedule.

Tomorrow sees attention turn to the league and the visit of Horsham YMCA (3pm), who will include former Pagham old boys Joe Shelley, Kieron Pamment and Liam Humphreys in their ranks.

THen, Wednesday will see them visit Littlehampton Town (7.30pm).

Speaking to the Post, Hellen, who is sharing the managerial reigns with Tom Simmonds, said: "It is a tough start [to the league campaign] but we're full of confidence, raring to go and looking forward to putting our best foot forward.

"THey [Horsham YMCA] will have three players with them who were with us last season

so we do know a bit about them. But we'll just focus on what we're doing."

An early Scott Murfin strike put the Lions in control against the Mullets. THe win was sealed in the second half thanks to Josh Irish (2) and a late goal from sub David Crouch.

THe victory earned Pagham ÂŁ1,500 in prize money and a home tie against Isthmian Division One side Sittingbourne on August 19.

Hellen described the match as a "good team performance".

He added: "We were pleased with how it went - it was a good win, we got a clean sheet and earned some money for the club.

"THe biggest thing through the off season was keeping our squad together. With the exception of Liam, we have managed to sign every one of last season's team.

"What is really pleasing, though, is the success we're having in bringing the under21s through.

"Of the team that played on Saturday, seven of last year's under-21s squad were in there.

If you take Scott out, then the next oldest player is 24 so that's encouraging for us."

CHICHESTER City's FA Cup dream is over for another season with the Lillywhites' focus now firmly on the league and building on last season's third place finish.

Miles Rutherford's side struggled to find their feet during the road trip as a new formation at Hellenic Premier side Binfield failed to pay dividends.

Goals from Dave Herbert, Ellis Martin and a late Scott Jones effort were not enough for Chi as they lost 4-3 to the side based just north of Bracknell. THat defeat means Chi's hopes of a cup run in the world's oldest knockout competition are ended.

All focus now shifts to the SCFL Premier league opener at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (3pm) with Rutherford looking for the consistency that has been missing from his side's performances in recent months.

THen it is on to a visit from Arundel, who visit Oaklands Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Last season's FA Cup defeat triggered a remarkable league run where Chi lost just once through to the start of March.

Rutherford will be hoping for something similar this time around.

Selsey pay the perfect tribute Ne

SELSEY FC remembered club stalwart Dave Clarke in style, hammering fellow SCFL Division One side Midhurst & Easebourne 4-1 in the season opener.

Goals from Jake Goulding (2), Ryan Morey and Ryan Hillier secured victory for the Blues in the Peter Bentley Cup. THat win takes them through to the next round and an away match against SCFL Premier side Chichester City on August 22.

Perhaps, more importantly, it was the perfect way to pay tribute to Clarke, who was a regular at the Bunn Leisure Stadium and strong supporter of sport in the area.

Friends and family joined members of the club committee and first team squad after the match as his ashes were spread at the High Street ground.

Clarke was remembered for his influential role in coaching his two sons, Ollie and Joe, who is a part of the current Selsey first team squad, but also dozens of youngsters at Chichester City Youth FC. He was also a regular for Selsey CC second team, captaining their Sunday side.

A tribute on the Selsey CC Facebook page said: "During his time playing for the cricket club, Dave had captained the Sunday XI in

which he maintained and upheld the spirit of how Sunday cricket should be played.

"He also captained the second XI and in the 2015 season guided them to promotion. His attitude was competitive in league cricket, ensuring discipline and a winning mentality.

"He was a gritty batsman who always claimed that the ball should be hit along the deck and can be recalled hitting only one six.

He had a shuffling bowling action, not always popular with the groundsman as he was often likely to ruin the run-ups."

Selsey FC return to action tomorrow, kicking off their SCFL Division One campaign with a home match against AFC Varndeanians (3pm). * SCFL Division Two rivals Sidlesham and Bosham must wait an extra week before kicking off their new campaigns.

THe Robins of Bosham will be looking to follow up last season's successful season which saw them win the title at a canter.

First up for Andy Probee's side will be a trip to last year's fourth-placed club Lancing United on August 19.

Chi Ladies buzzing after Hornets test CHICHESTER City Ladies stepped up their pre-season preparations with a strong showing against Women's Super League side Watford.

THe Green Army kick off their FA Women's Premier League South campaign on August 20 with a trip to C & K Basildon Ladies.

With new manager Matt Wright having put the squad through their paces, Chi hosted Watford at Oaklands Park on Sunday.

Despite the visitors playing in a league above them, Chi pushed the Hornets all the way before succumbing 2-0.

Both sides went at it hammer and tongs from the off, with both looking to gain an early advantage.

Chichester more than handled themselves

against their illustrious opponents. With the two-pronged attacking duo of Cherelle Khassal and Charley Wilson-Blakely looking dangerous for the hosts, the Hornets had to be on their guard to keep the score goalless.

THe visitors broke the deadlock just before the break when, after a momentary lapse of concentration at the back, the on-rushing Anneka Nuttall slid the ball home.

Jess Lewry and Khassal both had chances in the second half to get the score level. But it was Watford who got the game's second, Leah Cudone wrapping up the scoring as time ticked down.

It was a good effort from Chi, though, giving their fans plenty of hope before the new campaign.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows there is still more to come from his Rocks side - despite them taking four points from six on their return to National League South.

THe Nyewood Lane side have been unfazed so far on their return to step two football, beating Bath City 3-2 at home on Saturday before drawing 2-2 on the road at Poole Town.

THe positive results against two sides that finished in the top ten last season have given Rocks fans hopes of a positive campaign this time round.

Bognor will be hoping to build on those results in the coming days with a trip to former National League side Welling United tomorrow (3pm) before hosting Sussex rivals Whitehawk on Tuesday at home.

Speaking exclusively to the Post, Pearce said: "I think any manager in this league would be happy with four points from six out of those two games.

"Both teams did well last year but the lads have acquitted themselves well as we are still not exactly a settled side with all the managerial upheaval that has gone on - we still have not got our act together perfectly."

Saturday's win against Bath was secured thanks to goals from Alex Parsons, Jimmy Muitt and a late Ollie Pearce thunderbolt of a free kick which gave the Rocks all three points after the Romans had pulled level.

Mutt made it two from two on Tuesday,

equalising for Bognor after defender Corey Heath had given the Rocks the lead.

But Pearce believes fans still have plenty more to see from a side which is only starting to come together.

He said: "THere's more still to come.

"If you are asking me in my world how far to 100 per cent we are I would be saying that we are currently about 60 to 65 per cent.

"THere are lots of other parts to the game we can improve on. We need to be far more streetwise on all set plays both defensively and offensively.

"THose moments make up about 20 to 25 per cent of a football match and can contribute to a lot of goals.

"We need to get fitter if we really want to play a passing style of football. THat takes time and will take sacrifices as training two nights a week with a game on Saturday you can't always get to the level that you need."

Pearce said he was still looking to make a few additions to the first team squad in the coming days. But he admitted that, even if these players were not brought in before the Welling or Whitehawk match, the current crop could compete.

He said: "THere's no target from the next couple of games. If you can win at home and draw away, then any side will be in the shake up. But in this league everyone is difficult to beat so we shall just see how we go."

Pearce calls for ruthless streak WELL, even the most optimistic of Rocks fan could not have imagined a start to the season like that.

Two games in a new division against two top ten sides and still Bognor remain unbeaten, in no small part due to two late strikes and a heap of drama.

What's more, the Rocks' front three appear to be firing, giving the side a boost in knowing that they can compete with the best on the return to National League South.

Manager Jack Pearce said: "Most people acquitted themselves well in the games we've had. Ollie Pearce scored a tremendous free kick. All the time I've been watching him I've never seen him strike a ball that well.

"Jimmy Mutt is playing very well with his attacking display. Both have got to work harder at their game when haven't got the ball but there's genuinely a good atmosphere in the camp."

While goals are being scored, the danger of not taking chances when on top is something that the Rocks must get used to.

Pearce said: "At this level, if you don't score when you're having a good spell then the opposition will have the quality. Games change on incidents like that. We need to be ruthless."

WITH James Crane being away on his honeymoon I'm stepping in this week with an update from the Nye Camp.

I'm writing on the evening of our 3-2 opening day win over Bath City, a great start to life back in National League South.

It was exciting but I do think the nerves played their part which showed as we went two up before they pegged us back to two all.

I think we were probably excited with the new challenge so to get over the line was brilliant for us all and it ended up being a good day. To score the winner with a free kick like that was amazing - it's probably the best goal I will ever score.

When it was given, I actually wasn't going to take it. Ben Swallow, being left footed, was going to, particularly as there was a really strong wind going across the pitch. But he handed it over to me as he said he didn't think it was right so I stepped up and just decided to smash it as hard as I can.

Most of the time they end up in the tennis courts behind the goal but, luckily enough, it was my day and we got the three points.

It has definitely given everyone a lift.

It didn't matter who we were playing on the first day coming back to the league, it was always going to be like that.

But it helped that we knew that Bath were a big team, a good team, too.

We knew it would be a tough game and to get the three points for the side was the most important thing.

It was good to get back to playing competitively again.

THis year was a bit of a different pre-season not just for me but for a lot of players.

We were used to training and having just five players for a few weeks and then not having a full squad together until the week before the season starts.

But this time round we had 20 at training most weeks and people were really challenging

for places.

Four or five who came on trial we have signed which shows they were not just making up the numbers.

It was good to have that competition and I think it showed in how we played.

THere was only one game which was really disappointing and that was Gosport due to the number of players we had.

But against both Portsmouth and Crawley we dominated for large sections of the game was really good.

THings may be a little different since we have gone up but everyone is up for the challenge and credit for that must go to the coaching team.

Next up for us tomorrow is a real challenge with Welling United away.

THey have come down from the National League and I'm sure it will be a tough test.

But, as Jack Pearce has been saying to us in the dressing room, there will be no easy game this year.

Last year I think there were some matches where we could have taken the foot off the gas knowing that we still may get three points.

But in this league there are so many good sides and good teams it will be tough for us.

THe important thing is we have got the first game nerves out of the way.

It was also important given what's gone on with the manager over the pre-season.

It was a confusing time when Sami was announced and then said he had to step down, but the main thing was keeping the group of players we had last year.

Look at Saturday and there were ten players who were with us last year.

I know Jack has taken over but he has been at the club for 48 years and Dabba and Gary Charman are still involved.

THough a few may have thought we might have struggled, nothing really has changed; we've just got a different manager and everything is going fine.
