Another shock in A27 drama BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A MEETING about the future of the A27 descended into chaos this week. It came after it was unveiled that a deadline of September has been set by Highways England for funding to develop the heavily congested road. Members of the community and local
businesses gathered at Chichester College for an updated Build a Better A27 meeting. THe audience were given an update on the project so far. But towards the end of the meeting a letter was circulated giving details of a recent meeting with Highways England, which revealed that the £250m funding would be available only until the end of September. Highways England said that an online
route would be their preferred option. It means that it could be a further 13 years before any work is carried out. THe Build a Better A27 group was formed in March after the Secretary of State for Transport cancelled the project. THe group has always said that no option is off the table. But Chichester District Council's leader, Cllr Tony Dignum, announced an informal discussion had taken place
between councillors looking at potential work that could be carried out in the near future to minimise traffic in the city. THat was met with disgruntled shouts and cries from the public. Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: "We are looking for things to try to unite the community and to find the right solution for this area." Continued on page seven
