Time to make our city green BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE CITY of Nottingham could serve as the inspiration to the solution of Chichester's traffic problems. THat was the call following a meeting organised by campaign group Chichester Moves On this week. Guest speaker Richard Wellings spoke
to residents as he has spearheaded a pioneering integrated transport plan in Nottingham. Nottingham City Council is aiming to develop the greenest city for transport in the UK. He said: "It's important to look at the big problems. Chichester is a great place. "I have had a great walk around this afternoon. THere are great places that do have a parking problem - but people come
to these places for the place itself. "We can't keep building roads - there isn't enough space." Richard spoke about how Nottingham was having problems with its air quality as well as traffic problems. To counter this a range of new transport methods were implemented, he explained. THey had buses powered by bio-gas, which ran alongside electric buses and trams. THere were also special residents’ travel
cards, similar to London's Oyster card which allowed people to use the full range of transport options quickly, cheaply and easily, he said. THe other transport options for residents included two park and ride bus schemes and six park and ride tram services. THis meant 95 per cent of residents were within 400m of a bus stop.
