D-Day approaches for city

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS to regenerate and transform an extensive part of Chichester's city centre will be debated this week.

Councillors at Chichester District Council will decide whether to approve plans to carry out public consultation on the Southern Gateway masterplan

that aims to transform the area, which is considered the key point of access and arrival to the city.

It provides the opportunity to create a vibrant new quarter, linking the city centre with the canal basin, public transport hubs and pedestrian, cycle and leisure routes.

Councillor Tony Dignum, leader of the council, said: “This is a major project, and will take several years to complete,

helping to bring homes, jobs and improved facilities for residents.

“The Southern Gateway project is about enhancing this important entrance point to the city and improving connectivity to a number of facilities and landmarks including the railway station, canal basin and the rest of the city centre."

The masterplan illustrates how the area would deliver new homes, business space, and tourism and leisure facilities.

It would also improve transport links, providing more emphasis on cycling, walking and public transport; and regenerate the area.

The area includes the law courts and bus station; bus depot and Basin Road car park; Royal Mail sorting office and depot; land at the police station and former high school; land at Chichester Station; and Government offices.

Time to celebrate city's businesses

In celebration of the entrepreneurial spirit and excellent business minds of the Chichester residents, next month will be Independent Business Month.

The Chichester BID team has teamed up with Love Where You Live in Chichester to offer a city centre event which will run throughout July.

It will showcase all of the independent businesses in the city, spanning business services, retail and shopping, nightlife, cafes and eateries.

Each week will see a focus on one particular section, with a whole range of promotions and giveaways for visitors to enjoy.

Jeanette Hockley, from the BID, said “Chichester BID is proud to support Independents’ Month because it’s these entrepreneurial businesses which keep Chichester special and unique when compared to most other cities.

“There are over 350 independents currently trading in Chichester, made up of various sectors, with 56 eateries, 83 retail and 137 professional/commercial/ property owners.

“Independents not only offer a boost to the local economy but give visitors to Chichester a very personal and enjoyable experience when they’re here.

“Draper’s Yard is just one great example of how entrepreneurial our independent businesses are and how they work together to support each other.”

The first week of July will focus on

retail, as Chichester is home to a number of independent retail businesses and entrepreneurs.

In the second week, the focus will shift to Chichester’s independent restaurants, wine bars, cocktail bars, boutique hotels, entertainment venues, retailers and convenience stores Meanwhile, the third week of Independents’ Month will showcase a variety of businesses - from architecture to office services, legal and finance to dentistry.

Then, moving into the final week of the series, the focus turns to the locally sourced produce, friendly service and unique homemade offerings that the cafes and eateries within the city centre are famous for.

There are more than 175 independent businesses within Chichester’s city walls, most of which are offering special promotions for Chichester Independents’ Month.

Local Independent business owner Helen Thompson, from CrossEyes, said: "Independent shops help give a town a unique identity and a reason for people to visit.

"Our shop offers unhurried professional eyecare, unique affordable spectacles and honest advice on frame selection, to help make sure you get a pair of glasses that look and feel great."

Selsey Festival is a big success HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a week of activities at the Selsey Walking and Outdoor Festival.

The festival explored the wildlife, sea, history, landscape, heavens and flora of the Manhood Peninsula by foot, buggy, bike, sea, boat and telescope.

Ann Humphrey, chairman of the festival said: “I am delighted that the event again proved to be successful and made the hard work, organising and running the festival, worthwhile.”

The week began with a leisurely stroll from Chichester Marina through countryside to Pagham and then on to Selsey.

West Sussex County Council Children and Family centre provided

two events in Selsey and Bracklesham for toddlers and their carers.

Dr John Mason from the Chichester Planetarium led a mesmerising tour along the Selsey foreshore, made famous by Sir Patrick Moore, pointing out aspects of the night sky.

Sarah Wright was one of those taking part. She said: “I loved the Selsey tramway walk we went on. It was very informative, well organised and a physical challenge.”

Other groups took the opportunity to explore the area including the many blue plaques, the famous railway carriage homes and the Siddlesham Land Settlement Association.

Support city students in festival bid

Races give NSPCC a boost

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A FAMILY race-day at Goodwood has raised more than £65,000 for the NSPCC. Attendance reached 9,551 – a record for the fixture. Racegoers contributed to the money raised by donating for traditional funfair rides and games.

Guests also had the chance to meet Whisky Jack, a retired racehorse, as well as attending story-telling and gingerbread-making sessions. There were question and answer sessions with a vet and a mini course walk preceded the racing.

The NSPCC held both a live and silent auction, with lots such as signed racing memorabilia and an annual Goodwood Racecourse membership, while

sponsorship of each of the day’s races was sold as a donation.

Rupa-Dey Amin, head of community fundraising for London and the South East, said: “Thank you so much to Goodwood, all our sponsors, guests and all members of public who came and supported the NSPCC. "Your support at the NSPCC Goodwood Family Race Day has been incredible.

The money raised will go a long way with helping the most vulnerable children in the UK. We hope everyone had a wonderful day.”

Racecourse ambassador Jim Crowley gave an interview in the Parade Ring, answering questions on the best and worst elements of being a jockey.

PREPARATIONS are underway for a team of talented Chichester College students, who will be swapping the South Coast for Scotland this summer.

They will be taking their version of Jason and the Golden Fleece to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August – but lucky audiences in Chichester will be able to enjoy exclusive previews later this month.

The students will be performing two shows at The ShowRoom at Chichester University on Wednesday at 6pm and 8pm.

Money raised from the performances will go towards helping the students get to Edinburgh.

Andrew Green, deputy principal at Chichester College, said: “For the first time in our history, we are taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and we couldn’t be happier.

“It costs a lot of money to get to Edinburgh, with travel and accommodation costs soaring during festival times so we’re holding special performances to help raise money.

“This is a rare opportunity to see our show before we take it to Scotland, and it’s not to be missed.

Tickets cost £5 for adults, £4 for under 16s, students and over 60s.

Veterans talk in new book A NEW book of insightful interviews charting West Sussex residents’ military service throughout the 20th century is now available.

Military Voices Past and Present is a collection of memories from local veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars, and more recent conflicts.

The stories have now been published in a 550-page book and also released as digital audio recordings.

The project began with 32 First World War veteran interviews made in the 1980's by Worthing history teacher Peter Baker. He deposited the interviews at West Sussex Record Office in 2014 to make sure they were preserved as a vital part of social history.

Inspired by his work, staff and volunteers from West Sussex County Council Library Service embarked on a project. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, they interviewed a further 63 local veterans.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “The Military Voices project is one small way to thank all those alive and passed on who have given service to their country to protect our freedom. A fitting tribute to so many heroic men and women.”

A limited print run of the book is on sale for £10 from all West Sussex libraries and West Sussex Record Office in Orchard Street, Chichester.

Community joy as housing is rejected

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save a restaurant from being turned into housing are celebrating after the council rejected the plans.

Members of the community in Chichester rallied together when it was announced that bar and restaurant Muchos Nachos could close and be turned into housing.

But now, Chichester District Council has refused the planning application, giving many reasons including the impact on highway safety, the impact on the listed building and the impact that the proposal would have on the visual amenity and character of the streets and the surrounding area.

Campaigner Sarah Sharp said: "It

is good news that the application has been refused as this is more than just a restaurant, it is a community hub and meeting place for lots of different groups of people.

"So the community got together and held a meeting and the forms have been handed in to start the process of nominating the pub as a community asset.

"This process takes eight weeks and we hope that this will add an extra layer of protection to prevent people closing it down and turning it into housing.

"It is not only a special building, but it is a special place for locals and groups. It would be a great shame to lose it.

"The more supporters the pub has, the better for the future."

Duchess of Cornwall spends time meeting college students STAFF and students representing Chichester College at this year’s South of England Show were delighted to receive a royal visitor.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall attended the show and during her visit she spent time meeting stallholders – including those at the Brinsbury stand for Chichester College.

Animal care students were delighted that the Duchess held one of their stick insects. The Duchess also received a handmade copper rose as a gift from the college's forge - it had been made by two students that morning.

College principal Shelagh Legrave OBE said: “Her Royal Highness was very interested in all that we have to offer at Brinsbury, particularly the ducks and insects. It was a lovely surprise for us to meet the Duchess and a pleasure to speak to her.

TWO men were left to walk home in the rain after the vehicle they were travelling in was seized by police.

The grey Peugeot 207 was pulled over in Via Ravenna, Chichester, at about 8.55pm on Tuesday, June 6, after PC Tom Van Der Wee, of the Chichester Neighbourhood Response Team, witnessed a back seat passenger throw a can of beer out of the window.

The passenger was ordered to retrieve his litter and put it in the bin, while a check was carried out on the vehicle.

The car was not insured and it was subsequently seized under Section 165a of the Road Traffic Act, leaving the two passengers to walk home on foot in spite of heavy downpours.

The driver was later arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

A 21-year-old from Bognor Regis is due to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 23, charged with driving with 60mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system and driving with no insurance.

Mr Dignum added: “At the moment this area is dominated by traffic, and we know from the Chichester Vision that the number one thing that people want is to see less traffic in this area and for access to be improved for cyclists, walkers and those who use public transport.

“There are several sites which are being freed up for other uses.

"Now is the perfect opportunity to look at how we can make better use of these buildings and land so we really want to hear people’s views on the options.

“We understand that these proposals will potentially involve significant changes to the area and we will be working closely with all of those who live and work there. This is about getting everyone’s views and then deciding on the best option for the area."

The proposals suggest that the law courts and bus station area could include a new hotel to support the visitor and tourism offer in the city.

There are also talks that the Crown Court could be suitable as an arts or entertainment venue.

The Southern Gateway ties in with work already carried out on the Chichester Vision, which sets out how the public would like the city to evolve over the next 20 years.

The top three things that people highlighted were to: reduce traffic in the centre of Chichester; support independent businesses; and create a better night time economy.

The Southern Gateway masterplan will help towards realising these ambitions.

As part of the masterplan, two transport options have been unveiled to reduce the dominance of the one-way

gyratory, which have been developed by consultants.

Option 1 would restrict vehicle access to the Stockbridge Road level crossing to buses and emergency vehicles and improve access for cyclists and pedestrians.

It would realign Basin Road and create a new junction in Stockbridge Road.

Meanwhile, the Southgate Gyratory would be modified to reduce the width and number of lanes in order to improve pedestrian access.

Option 2 would do the same as option one but it would remove the Southgate gyratory and replace it by extending Avenue de Chartres to connect with Basin Road.

It means that while vehicles would still be able to access the area, road space would be re-prioritised to promote sustainable transport and improve the route between the railway station and South Street.

In both options the existing bus station would be replaced with a new bus and taxi interchange, located immediately north and south of the railway station and level crossing.

Extra coach parking space would also be created in Avenue de Chartres.

The council is working with a number of organisations, including the Homes and Communities Agency, to secure funding and land.

If approved, the council will be encouraging residents and businesses to have their say from June 29 for six weeks.

Students' work is displayed in gallery to attract youngsters THE WORK of talented Chichester College students has been on display at Pallant House.

The students, who are in their second year of their Graphic Design A-level, have spent months working with staff at the Chichester-based gallery on a project aimed at inspiring young people.

Lecturer Mike Martin said: “There were no limits as to what the students could design, as long as it was a response to what they saw in Pallant

House – that could include the building itself, the architecture, the works inside the gallery, patterns, shapes or even textures associated with it. It really was up to them.

“The team at Pallant House have been brilliant – they have been very engaged with the students, and they were keen to listen to the students’ ideas about how they could reach a younger audience."

The exhibition is open to the public and runs until mid-June.

Fun times for popular fête AN ANNUAL school and church summer fête is set to return to the village on Saturday.

The event at Fishbourne Primary School will run from 11.30am until 2.30pm.

This year’s theme is Around the World, reflecting the cultural diversity of some of this year's attractions.

There will be a qigong class (a Chinese martial art), a chance to play the French game petanque, a scooter demonstration and a Father’s Day gift stall for children to buy their dad a gift for Father's Day, which is the following day.

The school is hoping the event will raise enough money for some new playground equipment while the 13th Century church of St Peter and St Mary, the school’s partner in the event, will use its share of the money raised to boost its boiler fund.

Asda and Costa in Selsey open their doors to public

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE NEW Asda superstore has opened its doors to customers in Selsey - with a Costa coffee shop due to follow suit tomorrow.

The £8m, 14,000 square foot store has created over 80 jobs for local residents, in a mixture of full and part time roles across all of its departments. Selsey Town Council chairman Mike Beal was on hand to celebrate the opening by cutting the ribbon to the new £8m store.

He officiated the opening alongside general store manager Martyn Compton and the new store team.

Mr Compton said: “The opening morning was a great success and we’d like to say a huge thank-you to The chairman of Selsey, and all of our new customers who helped to celebrate with us.

"It’s so exciting to finally unveil our store to local residents, and we’re looking forward to building relationships with the local community.”

Meanwhile, the 2,000 square foot Costa store will be officially opened with a ribbon cutting by the town council chairman on Saturday.

The new Selsey Costa will create eight new jobs in the area and will provide training and apprenticeship opportunities for young people.

Mr Beal said: “I am honoured to be opening the new Costa coffee store in Selsey.

"The new Costa will not only create new jobs, facilities and opportunities for local residents but will also provide another reason for visitors to come to Park Farm in Selsey, explore and take advantage of all that this new area has to offer. I wish the new store every success.”

Scooter is in car collision

A 94-YEAR-OLD man sustained serious injuries after he was involved in a collision in Chichester.

The man was on his mobility scooter which was in collision with a car on the A259 main road at Chidham, near Chichester.

The crash happened at around 7.10pm on Wednesday, June 7, at the road's junction with Newells Lane.

The injured man, from Bosham, was taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, and detained overnight.

His injuries were not thought to be lifethreatening.

The car involved, a red Ford Fiesta, was driven by a 70-year-old man from Emsworth. He was unhurt.

Artists prepare College music festival to show work

ready to make a return CHICHESTER College is celebrating the return of its free music festival this weekend.

Chi-Fest will see the college campus come to life tomorrow, with nine hours of live music across three stages, as well as an acoustic tent.

More than 50 live bands are set to perform, showcasing the talents of students past and present as well as local groups, musicians and performers.

There will be lots to keep the kids entertained including dance workshops and sing-a-longs.

There will also be performances by Theatre Inc., the college’s award-winning theatre company.

Chichester College principal Shelagh Legrave OBE said: “Chi-Fest is a great way to showcase what we do and the talent we have in our wider community.

“With more than 50 live acts, there will be a real mix of music – from rock to folk and everything in between, so there will be something to suit everyone’s musical tastes.”

Chi-Fest runs from midday until 9pm tomorrow.

Admission is free.

THE CHICHESTER Art Society's annual exhibition will be on show later this month.

The exhibition will be at the Oxmarket Centre of the Arts in Chichester from Tuesday, June 20, to Sunday, July 2.

It is the society's 70th exhibition and more than 85 artists will be exhibiting some 250 pieces of work in different artistic media.

Committee member Barry Shears said: ”This is an extremely welcoming and friendly society.

"Before coming to Chichester, I ran the Chelsea Open Air Exhibition but the range of skills and the general friendliness of all the artists is more evident in the Chichester Art Society.

"We have over 200 members who come from the city, and neighbouring towns and villages. And they're very interesting people, many have trained here or abroad and others are selftaught.

"You get a highly instructive and sympathetic atmosphere with a great deal of good work produced.”

The society was founded in May, 1939, but its activities were interrupted four months later by the

war.

Re-established in 1946, annual exhibitions were started and The Bishop of Chichester, the Dean and the Mayor became patrons, as did The Duke of Richmond and Gordon who entered his own work in some exhibitions.

Membership embraces a wide range of artistic ability, from professional to amateur to hobby artists.

Anyone with an interest in art is welcome to join.

Over the years, the society's members have also exhibited with the Royal Societies of Water Colour Artists, Marine Artists, Women Artists, Portrait Painters, Pastel Painters, and the RSBA. A lot of the membership continues to consist of part-time and amateur artists, with a wide range of technical aptitude and skill and a high degree of enthusiasm.

` Summer festival A MONTH of Mendelssohn is set to delight audiences at the Regis School of Music's latest summer festival.

THe composer's music - and that of his fellow high romantics - is taking centre stage at the Bognor Regis event. It was launched last Friday and the first concert at the Sudley Road venue will be given by renowned English pianist Julian Jacobson at 7.30pm tomorrow.

Jacobson will be accompanied

by Mariko Brown in a programme which will also include works by Beethoven and Prokofiev.

Next Friday will see Anthony Lindsey give a talk about Mendelssohn and the High Romantics at 10.30am.

Festival organiser Sasha Levtov said: "THis is our 19th festival. We are looking forward to welcoming some world-class musicians to Bognor Regis as well as giving our students - and others from the area - the chance to perform on our concert piano in our recital hall.

"THe festival is a highlight of our year and I hope we will get a few hundred people at each concert."

THe festival continues unil July 8 with a weekend competition on July 1 and 2 for junior and senior amateur musicians, instrumentalists and singers in various age categories and abilities.

July 2 sees former piano student Imy Luc return from Cheetham's School of Music in Manchester with the Alegria Piano Trio. THis will be followed on July 5 with a new event when the school's students play music illustrated by their pictures.

A gala ends the festival on July 8.

Canine stars take prizes at dog club's anniversary show

FIFTY years of training dogs and their owners were celebrated by a Bognor Regis group.

THe latest annual companion dog show staged by Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club proved to be a popular and successful way to mark the anniversary.

Club press officer Phil Lewis said: "THis was the first show under the direction of new show secretary Alison Formaggia.

"Superb weather attracted a very large crowd with a wide variety of entries. Some came from as far afield as Brighton, Southampton, Eastbourne and the New Forest and, of course, it was very well supported by local entries."

Rhodesian Ridgebacks owned by Jane Hawkins, from Gosport, did the double.

Oz won the Best in Show Trophy and Neo, aged seven months, took the best puppy prize.

Following the success of last year's introduction of a training ring, this year's show continued with the same format of having only three classes for obedience.

THey were again contested to a high standard. Mr Lewis said: "THe novelty classes are always popular but this year had an even bigger entry than usual.

"Once again, fun is very high on the agenda, which makes for an enjoyable afternoon for both dogs and owners."

THere were nine successful candidates that passed the Kennel Club good citizen bronze award.

Pole positions on show from top dancers DOZENS of pole dancers from around the country showed their skills in North Bersted.

THe talents of the men and women made the return of the Miss Pole Dance UK amateur and semi-pro championships a huge success.

It was the second year the event had been staged at Bersted Park Community Centre and expanded to fill all last weekend after the 2016 inaugural event.

THe second day on Sunday saw the new group category won by Gotham City Sirens from Nottingham.

THe trio of Justina Justin, Samantha Turner and Sara McKenzie clinched first place and also won the prizes as the best entertainers and for the best tricks.

THe friends entered for some fun, rather than to win a title.

Justina said: "THere were originally four of us but, unfortunately, we lost one of our group so we literally put this together in one week."

THe girls have been pole dancing for between two and four years. Justina and Samantha are instructors.

"We didn't expect to even get placed, let alone win," said Samantha. "THis is incredible. We will definitely keep training and who knows where we will go next."

Six groups took part. THe high standard

was set by the first act - Dawson's Divas, from Shoreham-by-Sea, who picked up the prize for best costume.

THe championships began with displays by the amateur dancers.

THey set the scene for the two days of competition with a series of displays to give the audience a taster for things to come.

Next to take to the stage were the semi-pro students followed by the doubles and the semi-pro instructors.

Guest performances on the day included the female doubles act, Jalana, and Mr Pole Fitness champion 2016, Sam King, before Mr Pole Fitness amateur and semi-pro competitors ended the action for the day.

THe annual competition was started in 2005 by Kay Penney. She said she was delighted with the latest staging.

"THis weekend has been yet another huge success. THis year we introduced the groups category, which proved to be a massive hit. I would like to announce that next year we are also planning to introduce a juniors category to the show, which will be hugely exciting," she added.

THe category winners were invited to attend the bigger professional competition of Miss Pole Dance and Mr Pole Fitness UK in Crawley in October.

Conservative Gillian Keegan was elected as the new MP for Chichester last week.

Gillian won by more than 22,000 votes and she becomes only the third female MP in West Sussex.

In her acceptance speech, she said: "It is an enormous privilege to become a Member of Parliament for this constituency and I pledge myself to represent all the people irrespective of who they voted for today.

"Thank you to the people of Chichester for the confidence you have shown in me. I will seek to repay that trust by representing you and my party to the best of my ability in Parliament."

Now, the hard work begins. Speaking to The Chichester Post, she said: "I'm absolutely delighted. I've spent a lot of time working towards trying to become an MP. But to become an MP in Chichester where I have lived for seven years is really a dream come true.

"We've got some short-term challenges - the first one is the A27. We need to try and see if we can find a solution that we can all agree on that we can get the government to invest in.

"Also, a top priority is to make sure that we get the right funding for our schools.

"There's been a change in funding

formula which seems to have disadvantaged some of the West Sussex schools so we absolutely need to make sure we understand that and fight to make sure that they get their funding.

"They are the two big immediate priorities.

"Southern Rail is another big blight for anybody who is trying to commute so we need to try and understand what's going on with that and hopefully find a resolution."

Now, as Gillian prepares for her first day in parliament, she is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

She added: "I'm not a longterm career politician but I do work in Parliament one day a week just to try and get myself used to the whole environment and try to learn a little bit about how it works.

Remainers bite back - Labour

Green party candidate Heather Barrie said: "I think a huge amount of the vote has gone to Labour because a lot of people don't want the Tories so that's a tactical vote.

"I think what's really important is that a lot of the issues that we have to talk about will be brought to the agenda.

"Gillian has said to me tonight that we need to talk more about the environment."

Jonathan Brown was the Liberal Democrat candidate. He said: "I think locally this is an election dominated by national issues.

"It's difficult for all of the candidates to really engage with people locally.

"One of the consequences of our first past the post election system meant that Chichester didn't matter in the wider scheme of things politically.

"I think looking at the national results, the Conservative party put forward a manifesto that took people for granted, failed to inspire and scared an awful lot of people.

"Credit to Jeremy Corbyn, he did a much better campaign than anyone was expecting. But I also think he scared a lot of people into voting Conservative who didn't really want to."

Meanwhile, Labour candidate Mark Farwell said he was thrilled to secure as many votes as he did.

"I must thank Mrs May from the bottom of my heart because you couldn't have

messed up an election more if you tried," he said.

"Of course, this is the best performance by a Labour candidate in Chichester since 1966. It's been a fantastic campaign.

We've been on very good terms with all of the other candidates.

"It really was the Labour manifesto which really appealed to so many people in this constituency because although it is a wealthy constituency, there is poverty. We have food banks. We have some of the poorest levels of funding for

education anywhere in the country.

"For many people - students, pensioners, those that are on zero hours contracts or who have young families who are just making ends meet, there was quite a lot in the manifesto.

"The principal reason why we have done so well is that Remain has bitten back. The purpose of the election was for Mrs May to get an unassailable majority in Parliament so she could do whatever she wants. That means Remain has had no voice.

"Now, she's not going to be able to negotiate anything. I think it's been catastrophic for the Tories."

Andrew Emerson, who was standing for newer party Patria, said: "I'm very pleased, I think Patria's vote held up very well from the general election two years ago. I think given the Brexit effect and the tendency of opinion to polarise around a hard Brexit then I think Patria did very well.

"I foresee another general election in the near future and I will be here again."

Residents' group is going strong at 50 f Rosemary Warren accepts the cheque

Tots give money to park's helpers IMPROVEMENTS could be on their way to an area of Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust is looking at ways to make the Discovery Garden better.

Its volunteers have been helped in their work by a £500 donation from Releasing Potential. It runs Forest School Tots, which meets on Tuesday mornings, weather permitting, in the garden. Young children can play and explore the woodland environment and listen to a story.

Rosemary Warren, the trust's chairman, said: "THe trust are working with Releasing Potential to provide better facilities in the Discovery

Garden for the children to enjoy."

THe trust has funded a series of improvements to the park since its formation in 1998.

THis has included £18,000 towards the children's playground, £6,700 to help the restoration of Hotham Park House's clocktower and several thousand pounds for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party wooden sculpture unveiled last Easter.

A HALF-CENTURY of help has been celebrated by a Pagham group.

Pagham and District Residents' Association marked the golden jubilee with a musical soiree for its annual cream tea. Last Saturday's occasion in Pagham Village Hall was attended by 89 members.

THey were entertained by master of ceremonies Alison Blenkinsopp and two friends with music from the past 50 years.

Much was in the style of famed comedy writer and singer Joyce Grenfell.

Association chairman Ann Rowles said it had been a fitting celebration. "It was a really good afternoon, with lovely food of

cream scones, sandwiches and cakes and good entertainment," she said.

THe association's formation dates back to 1964. A group of residents were unhappy with the running of the then parish council. THis prompted them to form a group to raise their concerns.

THree years later, their activities led to the residents' association. THey bought their first minibus another three years afterwards to take members shopping.

THe association's latest minibus to carry on the regular runs to stores like Morrisons, Matalan and M&S is due to arrive this month at a cost of nearly

£40,000.

"We have about 2,000 households as members," said Ann. "We have tried to continue the association as its original members ran it, though we are not political these days."

Fortnightly coffee mornings attract 6080 members, a coach trip to Southampton Water was enjoyed by 53 members and the same number will go to Highclere Castle in Berkshire soon.

Ladies' supper evenings each month attract 16-30 diners a time and weekly rambles across the South Downs are popular as well.

Bacchus to the future wines best left to age Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

DELAYED gratification, in this modern age, may well seem an alien concept to some, but in the realm of fine wine is essential for maximising the taste experience!

THus M&S have ventured into the en primeur Bordeaux market of 2014 - offering in-store a selection of the 32 wines on offer starting with the ever-reliable Château Potensac. THis is a wine I have always purchased as it is owned by the renowned Delon family, who own both Léoville Las Cases in St. Julien and Château Nenin in Pomerol, and the vines on the top of the Potensac plateau in Northern Médoc are on average 40 years of age, adding to the inherent quality of a truly fine winemaker.

It is all the more an opportune time to purchase as M&S have extended their 25 per cent off six bottles or more offer to at least the end of June, so this fine wine can be bought for just £19.50 and is one worth storing for circa two years at least to appreciate its inherent quality!

Another favourite wine of mine was a dear old Château Chauvin St Émilion at an offer price of just £22.50. THe year 2014 was a significant one for this ancient wine, dating from 1500, as ownership thereof

passed from the Ondet family to Sylvie Cases and her offspring and she remains one of the owners of prestigious Château Lynch Bages in Pauillac.

THe vines are a healthy 30 years of age and this wine has red berries to the fore and is smooth and eminently drinkable in, say, two years. THe 2015 version has a new label and will probably surpass the 2014 version in terms of softness and finish. At a reduced offer price of £22.50 , the Chevalier de Lascombes 2014 Margaux is the second wine of Château Lascombes, but has undeniable charm, is dark purple red with violet hue and has ripe fruit with a balmy spiciness and delightfully wellstructured tannins and is drinkable now, but will improve with further ageing!

THe 2014 Château D'Angludet Margaux is, in fact, an English-owned château and for under £30 is medium-bodied with red berries to the fore and is one you can drink while it is relatively young! Silky smooth and eminently quaffable, I commend this wine to you and also was excited to see a Château Chasse-Spleen of 2014 vintage for an offer price of just over £32.

THis is an elegant fine wine with a wellexpressed cassis nose and a good finish.

Lively black fruit characterises this wine alongside graphite and sous-bois and one to purchase, keep for a few years and then enjoy.

Averting my attention from fine wines to store, I will now focus on wines for the here and now and ones ripe for consumption!

Two wines at an offer price of just over £6 from the Domaine Mandeville caught my

eye and the Viognier Pays D'Oc crafted by Olivier Mandeville who, incidentally, was one of the first producers to plant Viognier in the Languedoc region of La Belle France proved to be beautifully soft and rounded with predominantly peach and possibly apricot to the fore and with a slight spritz. Great as an apéritif and pleasingly refreshing, it is also a good stand-alone wine. A Viognier that pleases, teases and leaves you with welcome change in your pocket.

THe Sauvignon Blanc, similarly priced, from the Domaine Mandeville was very citrussy, light and flavoursome and, if you

like your wine zesty and big in the mouth, this wine might float your boat.

A Tasmanian wine then came to my notice in the form of a Pure South 2015 Sauvignon Blanc which utterly failed to disappoint at an offer price of £9 and turned out to be well crafted, beautifully balanced and bursting with tropical fruit flavours - a veritable delight and maybe

INGREDIENTS • 5 garlic cloves • Small bunch fresh oregano, leaves picked • Finely grated zest 2 large unwaxed lemons • 1 tsp sea salt • 6 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • ½ British lamb leg, boned and butterflied For the salad • 2 bunches fresh soft herbs such as basil, tarragon, mint and coriander, or a mix of what you fancy • 50g wild rocket • Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil • Squeeze lemon juice • 200g Dorstone goat’s cheese or similar ashrinded goat’s cheese

Method 1. Make a marinade by crushing the garlic, oregano, lemon zest and salt to a rough paste with 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a pestle and mortar. Add the rest of the oil and mix well.

2. Prick the lamb all over with the point of a small, sharp knife, then rub with the marinade.

Put in a sealable plastic food bag, squeezing

out any air, then leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 3 hours, or overnight if you can, making sure the lamb is kept flat so the marinade can coat it evenly.

3. Bring the lamb up to room temperature – it will take around 2-3 hours to lose the chill – then transfer to a metal baking tray.

4. Heat the grill to very high (240°C) and cook the lamb for 15 minutes on each side, then rest it for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile make the salad.

Put the herbs and rocket in a bowl with the extra-virgin olive oil and the lemon juice.

Toss, then season to taste.

5. When the lamb has rested, lift it onto a large chopping board, slice thickly and scatter with the herb salad. Crumble over the goat’s cheese, then serve.

Method 1. Put the blackberries in a saucepan with the elderflower cordial, caster sugar and fresh mint sprigs.

2. Set the pan over a medium heat and gently bubble the mixture for 10-15 minutes until the berries

The brilliant benefits of bone broth BONE broth is simple, it’s timeless, and it’s where we can go when we want to get back to the basics.

Bone broth is easier to make than you might think, and it has healing properties that go deeper than you may imagine.

Bones represent the structure of the universe. When we feel we know the truth, we feel it deep in our bones.

In my eyes, bone broth is grounding and nourishing, and while all of this sounds wonderful, there is also some science behind it to show us the benefits that our bodies can feel with each sip.

Homemade bone broth is one of the most powerful super foods on the planet. It’s made by simmering the bones of animal for 10–24 hours in a slow-cooker or pan.

THis slow cooking draws out the collagen, marrow, and other healing elements from the bones, including amino acids, minerals, glycine, and gelatin, which helps our health in so many ways. Bone broth has been a health choice for years, apparently increasing vitality and energy and age becomes merely a number when you have good health.

THere are so many benefits, I hardly know where to begin. THe immune system can benefit massively from bone broth. THe amino acids in bone broth, like arginine, glutamine, and cysteine, have been shown to boost immunity in both humans and animals.

THere’s a solid scientific reason that we reach for chicken soup when we have a cold or flu. Many studies have proved that chicken soup (bone broth) does indeed aid in alleviating symptoms of the common cold, by clearing mucus, opening respiratory

Community News & Views A PASSION for peppers made for an interesting visit for members of the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham.

THey spent hours touring one of the Europe's largest pepper nurseries to find out more about the specialist crop.

THeir eye-opening experience at Tangmere Airfield Nurseries enable them to find out how the fruit is grown and ends up on supermarket shelves.

THe nursery has nearly 75 acres of sweet peppers - all hydrophonically grown in climate-controlled glasshouses.

It has 30 hectares, equal to 60 football pitches, of the most modern glasshouse and packing facilities in the UK. Brian Clarke, the club's press officer, said: "THe entire visit was truly an eye-opener to passion and modern production methods and, for Bognor Hotham Rotary members normally concerned with such events as the Bognor 10k road race and the Christmas Float, was a truly interesting experience.

"With modern production methods, no soil is actually used.

Temperatures and nutrients are controlled automatically but picking is done carefully by hand, which suggests that humans are still useful.

"THe scale of the enterprise is enormous and the Tangmere site alone produces 65 million peppers annually."

Tangmere Airfield Nurseries was established in 1988 and is situated on the celebrated Battle of Britain Airfield where famous RAF pilot Douglas Bader was stationed for a time.

In 2001, the company acquired a site in Spain to allow it to supply its customers all year round.

THe Rotarians, pictured below in one of the greenhouses, were guided round the site by the company's production manager, Bob Horn, as well as its PR and marketing manager, Zoe Smith.

Of particular interest was Bob's explanation of how the nursery produces power from water 200 feet underground as it makes its way from the South Downs to the sea.

THis minimises the company's impact on the environment and even generates electricity for 10,500 homes in the area. In addition, all waste products are recycled.

Bob also showed club members how the plants are grown, how the nursery deals with harmful aphids and how the fruit is picked.

THe visit was one of the regular outings which the Rotary Club arranges on the fifth Tuesday of a month to places which are of interest and benefit the local community.

FIRE crews have visited schools around West Sussex to spread the word about fire safety education.

THey spoke to young people about how to stay safe in home, at school and outdoors by raising awareness of accidents and how to avoid them.

Angela Spencer-Smith, the schools education officer for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "THe fire service is here to keep people safe but we don't just like to respond when things go wrong. We also do a huge amount of work to try to prevent accidents from happening in the first place.

"We want every child in West Sussex to understand the dangers of fire and to know what to do should a fire break out."

THe visits took place during last week's child safety week organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

THe fire and rescue service's top safety tips include keeping lighters and matches out of children's reach and never leaving children alone in a kitchen.

THe first half finished with Sonata Op no 1, by Corelli, in which Rossini somehow made his guitar sound like a trio of two violins and a cello.

THe second half began with Couperin's Les Barricades Mysterieuses, a beautiful piece followed by two pieces by the Prussian composer, Mertz - An Malvina and Fingals Hohle.

Next was Schubert's Ave Maria, which Rossini had arranged as a very emotional piece with superb tremolo sections. THe formal concert finished with three pieces by Gaspar Sanz.

A NEW book of insightful interviews charting West Sussex residents’ military service throughout the 20th century is now available across the county.

Military Voices Past and Present is a collection of memories from local veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars and more recent conflicts. THe stories have been published in a 550-page book and also released as digital audio recordings.

THe project began with 32 First World War veteran interviews made in the 1980s by Worthing history teacher Peter Baker.

He deposited the interviews at West Sussex Record Office in 2014 to make sure they were preserved as a vital part of social history.

Inspired by his work, staff and volunteers from West Sussex County Council's library service embarked on a project to build on this collection. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, they interviewed a further 63 local veterans from the period 1939 to the 1990s.

THese interviews describe training, fellow servicemen, front line action, how service affected them as individuals. Included are female veterans such as nurses and a Bletchley Park codebreaker.

Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “People who signed up and gave service whether in the First, Second World Wars or any other conflicts right up to Afghanistan have done so to protect our country for democracy and freedom of speech.

“Many gave their lives, others have received significant injuries and traumas that have stayed with them throughout their lives. THe Military Voices project is one small way to thank all those alive and passed on who have given service to their Country to protect our freedom. A fitting tribute to so many heroic men and women.”

A limited print run of the book is on sale for £10 from all West Sussex libraries and West Sussex Record Office in Orchard Street, Chichester. Lending copies can also be borrowed via any library.

THe full interviews can be listened to on public computers at all 36 West Sussex libraries. THere is also a special listening turret with over 130 of the audio clips at Worthing Library until July 13 and at Horsham Library from July 19 until August 31.

Sir, Two years ago, a young German family with their two boys where on a Whit-week trip in England. THe boys should see something of the country whose language they study at school.

On the way to Stonehenge, their camper was involved in a road accident at Westergate Roundabout, A27, on the way to Chichester (May 28,2015, around 12.30).

THis accident was observed exactly by the drivers of a car following the camper with German registration. THey offered to act as witnesses and that's exactly what the German family needs now, to clear the facts of this accident.

It's about two years ago and really not actual, but to clear the facts, it could be interesting being published in a short story. It would help the German family when these witnesses could be found.

I add a photo of our daughter and her husband with one of the two boys, pictured above, to jog the memories of the witnesses.

TWINNING has been a part of Chichester’s history since the 1950s and is not only a feature of our own city’s history but also the history of numerous towns and cities across Europe.

‘Twin towns’ were formed after the Second World War, when several mayors and councils backed the idea of towns within Europe being twinned together.

The concept of twin towns began after Europe had been divided by the conflicts of war, and aimed to unite and bring countries together.

The twinning of towns and cities had the intention of building a stronger Europe, in which the citizens of different countries understood one another, as well as respecting their diverse cultures.

The concept of twinning had been widely used by the countries within the European Union but the invitation to form twinning associations was not limited to members of the EU. Britain did not join the European Union until 1973. However, in 1959 Chichester joined other towns and cities across the United Kingdom by twinning with the city

of Chartres in France.

The 1950s saw high records of towns and cities being twinned across Europe.

On February 28, 1959, the mayors of Chichester and Chartres met and signed the ‘Deed of Jumelage’ at Chichester City Council Chamber.

The ‘Deed of Jumelage’, although it is not a legal contract between the two cities, forms a partnership to work together and to cooperate with each other.

The contract signed is always known as the ‘Twinning Oath’.

Chartres is not the only city with which Chichester is twinned.

In December, 1996, Chichester paired with the city of Ravenna in Italy, their most recent twin to date.

In 2010, the City Council signed the friendship link with Valletta, Malta, and Chichester, which, like twinning links, aims to promote good relations and visits between the two cities.

Friendship links had previously been made between Chichester and other towns in Germany and Russia.

Since relationships between Chartres and

Ravenna were formalised in 1959 and 1996 respectively, associations were formed to keep the relationship alive and connected.

There are now three associations: Friends of Chartres, Friends of Ravenna, and Friends of Valletta which organise activities and events to enrich the understanding of each other’s culture, to work on collaborative projects and to hold exchange visits.

In recognition of their work in twinning with cities in Europe, in 2000 Chichester City Council was awarded the ‘Plaque of

Honour’ by the Council of Europe.

The three associations have collaborated in each of the past six years to stage an event during the Festival of Chichester to celebrate twinning.

The All-New Kia Rio THE fourth-generation Kia Rio, previewed at the Paris Motor Show last autumn, is on sale at Newbarn Kia, priced from just £12,135.

With high-tech new engines, improved fuel efficiency and emissions, a more mature driving experience, greater space and style and the introduction of state-of-the-art connectivity and driver assistance systems, the latest Rio is the small car grown up.

In line with customer demand, the Rio is now sold as a five-door model only. THere are 10 versions in three trim grades – badged 1, 2 and 3 for simplicity, in familiar Kia style – with a limited-run first edition model as the pinnacle of the range, priced at £17,585.

All are extensively equipped, rising to truly luxurious. Even grade 1 is fitted as standard with air conditioning, front electric windows with an automatic function on the driver's side, remote locking, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, a 3.8-inch display screen, Bluetooth, automatic light control, bifunction projection headlamps and cornering lights and LED daytime running lights. THere are body-coloured bumpers, door mirror casings and door handles, steering wheelmounted audio controls and 60:40 split rear seats. A four-speaker audio system is standard, while safety provisions include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

Grade 2, priced from £13,885, supplements all this with 15-inch alloy wheels in place of

similar-sized steel wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshifter, electric windows at the rear as well as the front, electric folding mirrors with LED indicator lights, a digital DAB radio, a 5-inch colour display screen, a six-speaker audio system, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, a 3.5-inch premium supervision cluster, rear as well as front USB charging ports, cruise control with a speed limiter and Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning systems. THere is chrome trim around the black radiator grille, premium black cloth upholstery and a centre storage box.

Additional features on Grade 3, which starts at £16,435, include 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning with a defogging system, black faux leather upholstery, a 7-inch display screen, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing front wipers, privacy glass on the rear side windows and tailgate, satellite navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and Bluetooth with voice recognition.

Finally, the First Edition version adds 17inch alloys, a smart key entry system and engine start/stop button, stainless steel pedals, black and red faux leather upholstery and LED rear lights.

PostSport Chi target further improvement as Winchester hosts next athletics meet CHICHESTER return to athletics action this weekend with a strong side looking to build on a positive start to the season.

THe senior sides will take part in the third leg of the Southern Athletics League in Winchester tomorrow (Saturday).

THen, on Sunday, the under-15 and under 13 sides will take part in the National Youth Development League.

THe senior teams, which also include under17s and under-20s levels, know they will be in for a hard battle with all their other five opponents of recognised national standard.

In addition to Winchester and Bournemouth, who were in the division last year, the league has seen the addition of City of Portsmouth and Southampton AC, as well as Brighton & Hove, to make it the strongest league in the south outside London.

But hopes will be high that Chi can do as they did in the opening fixture at Portsmouth and keep in touch with the rest of the teams.

THere, the team of 25 were well clear of Bournemouth and kept touch with Winchester in fourth all the way.

In Portsmouth, the 15 athletes in the men’s squad showed their strength on the track with

a few outright victories.

Will Broom and Brodie Keates continued their early season fine form over 800m and 1500m, as did sprinters Isaac Kilroy, Brandon Bell and Lewis Hall.

On the women's side, it was Chichester’s sprinters who dominated the women’s track programme, with Alyssa White clear winner of both the 100m and 200m. Rachel Laurie also tackled the 300m to good effect and was not put off by having to face UK number 1 Amber Anning from Brighton in her race.

Amelia Freeman was fluent over the hurdles and recorded a solid long jump, with Amber Dodd equally effective in the triple jump.

Lauren Cooper joined with Lucie Munday in the throws in discus and javelin to give the squad a well-balanced look over the programme. * More than 200 runners will pound the pavements for the annual Midsummer 5 mile road race, which is marking its 30th anniversary this year.

Entries are still open for the race which will take place on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Lavant.

DARTS: Halfway through the Bognor Friday Summer Darts League and the divisional Trebles knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

A record turnout with 34 teams overall, meant it was a busy night for all involved.

First up was the Division 3 knockout which saw 14 teams take to the oche, equalling the record from 2014.

After some good darts, the final was contested between Dave Coupland, Martin Grainger & Les Mullinger (Royal Oak) and Joe Osman, Natasha HughesTHomas & Aston Seabridge (BRSA Jokers), who won their semi after a 105 out-shot from Seabridge.

After splitting the first two legs, the Jokers started the decider by getting in front thanks to another ton from Osman.

But their doubles deserted them, giving the Royal Oak a chance which they took, taking the Division 3 Trebles Champions title.

f Chi's athletes return to action this weekend Division 2 saw 11 teams take part, with the final pitting Ashley Clements, Richard Pennells & Don Miles (QE2 Galleon) against James Riggs, Karl Wingate & Dave Wingate (Friary 'D').

QE2 Galleon got off to a smooth start with the more consistent scores. THey allowed the Friary boys to close the gap, but Clements eventually hit double 7 for the leg.

Leg 2 saw a spirited effort from the Friary with the lowest score being 66, and tons from father and son Dave & Karl Wingate. THis left their team captain with 52 after 15 darts, and he saw off the leg on only his second throw.

THe last leg saw a drop in form, but the Friary still took the lead with Riggs taking the double again, and the Division 2 Trebles Champions title.

f Chi's teams have been in good form all year despite facing some of the best teams from across the south.

Chichester Falcons continue to soar

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club continue their rise through the Solent League after chalking up comfortable wins against Portsmouth Zombies and Southsea Sharks.

With the season's squad now set, the Oaklands Park-based side sit three and two in the division.

THe Falcons began the Zombies game with a single run and things stayed that way until the fourth innings where the Chichester offense busted out with a pile of hits to get 7-3 ahead.

THe Falcons outfield worked hard and kept Portsmouth quiet thanks to a commanding right field of Hettie McNeil and Dave Piesse.

THen Chichester took up the bat again in the fifth to club another seven runs on the board, with back-to-back-to-back home runs from Morris, Piesse and double MVP Ally Warr.

Going into the final innings. the Falcons were a clear 14 runs ahead and managed to keep the Zombies pinned back to win the game 20-6.

Southsea Sharks proved to be tougher

opponents. Founding members of the league, they are typically an organised outfit.

But the Falcons welcomed them with a fourspot in the first and some spectacular fielding

by James Wheeler, returning from injury at third base.

Peter Martin was rampant, hitting 5 for 5 on the night as Chichester pegged back the Sharks thanks to another stellar performance at second base by Anne Rutherford, while Ben Sawkins hoovered anything close to shortstop.

Stefan Panayotopoulos made the play of the night with a herculean running catch deep in centre right, as pitcher Jason Mercer battled with the wind to frustrate the Sharks offense.

Another two-out rally in the third effectively put the game to bed as the Falcons hit nine runs, putting them 18-9 up going into the final innings. Lucy Morris held steady at first base to limit the Sharks’ final response to just one run, leaving the Falcons to celebrate a second win for the week at Oaklands Park.

Division 1 saw nine teams step up, the same as the last two years, and only a single team short of the record.

Reigning champions Richard Ragless, Derrick Longhurst & Buster Barton (Squash Club) made the final but they faced a tough task, up against Lee Franklin, Micky Rowland & Dave Owens (Friary 'Z'), who are the top three players in the league this term.

THe Division 1 final started with Ragless winning the bullseye for first darts, but the Z's took the leg in 18 darts after a 140 from Rowland, 95 from Owens, and an 82 out-shot from Franklin.

Leg 2 saw tons from Ragless & Barton, and a 95 from Longhurst, but they still trailed the Z's by a small amount.

Owens missed the double for the win, as did Franklin by throwing too high and hitting the wrong double.

But Rowland only needed 1 dart to hit double 8, taking the match 2-0, and the Division 1 Trebles Champions title.

Harris' effort is in vain as Bognor's batters fall short

BOGNOR are facing an uphill challenge to keep their spot in Sussex Division Two after falling to a seven wicket defeat at home to Ifield.

Mikey Harris top-scored with 49 after Max Ashmore's side were put in to bat by the visitors. But, in what is becoming a bit of a trend, the rest of the Bognor batting line-up struggled as they managed to reach only 133 before being dismissed.

With the ball, Ashmore’s side kept things tight. But the score was never going to be enough and the visitors reached the target with plenty to spare.

THat defeat means Bognor fall into the bottom two of the division, having only won one of their six games so far.

Ashmore will be hoping for more tomorrow (Saturday, 12.30pm) when they travel to Ditchling to play St James's Montefiore.

Meanwhile, in division six west, Bognor seconds will be hoping to come out on top in the basement battle with Stirlands seconds.

Bognor suffered a heavy 137-run defeat on the road at Ifield seconds at the weekend, Joshua Broad top-scoring with 35.

Narrow defeat for Bognor B Patel guides Priory Park to win

BOGNOR B came up agonisingly short from registering succesive wins in the West Sussex Bowls League.

Despite having home advantage, the Waterloo Square side fell to a 76-68 defeat to Witterings with the visitors taking home seven of the ten points.

THey followed that up with a 86 to 72 win over Maltravers.

THe eight points taken from the match leaves the club in mid-table.

Elsewhere, division one Bognor A won only one of four rinks in a 89-71 defeat at stillunbeaten Worthing Pavilion A. THe A team return to action tomorrow with top-of-thetable Worthing visiting Waterloo Square (2pm).

It's been a quiet week for Chichester BC with neither side being in league action this week.

Both teams have played just four times this term, winning one which sees them towards the bottom of their respective leagues.

THe B side, who lost to Goring Manor on June 6 last time out, return to action on Monday at

home to Petworth in division three.

Fellow division three side Middleton found their stride when Aldingbourne visited.

THe sports ground side won three out of the four rinks in what was a convincing 119-50 victory.

THat was only the second win out of six this term but takes Middleton in to mid-table.

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain BC suffered a resounding defeat when they went down 38-61, losing on all three rinks, to a strong Southbourne team in this annual home friendly played in a good spirit.

It was a different type of match two days later when 30 players on five rinks, playing 18 ends and bowling a total of 1,620 woods, were separated by only one shot at the end Fishbourne winning at Little Spain 81-80 in a fine sporting match.

Saturday sees the annual Captain's Day event at Liitle Spain when, after an afternoon of bowling, the players will sit down to a buffet meal provided by the members. Much fun is sure to be had.

CHICHESTER Priory Park's overseas star Abhishek Patel produced an inspired allround display to spur his side side on to victory over Preston Nomads seconds.

Chi have been performing well in Sussex Division THree this term, losing just once in six matches so far.

THat good form was continued with a three wicket win over Nomads at Goodwood on Saturday. THe victory was set up by Patel who, opening the bowling, tore into the visitors' batting line up to reduce them to 82 for five.

Nomads eventually reached 162 all out with the New Zealander Patel taking five for 30.

Priory Park started poorly in reply, being reduced to 17 for two before Jay Harting produced a typical hard-hitting display (52).

After a slight middle order collapse, it was then left to Patel (31*) and wicketkeeper George Perry (20) to put on an unbeaten 42 for the eighth wicket and guide Priory home.

THat win leaves them third in division three, just behind Pagham, who stay second after a comfortable nine wicket win over Eastbourne

After winning the toss and putting the visitors in, Ollie Pearce (5 for 32) and Peter Cotterill (4 for 14) did most of the damage as Eastbourne were bowled out for just 48.

Aiden Zammit (46* off 20 balls) then led the charge as Pagham wrapped up the win in the fifth over.

Pagham travel to Preston Nomads tomorrow (12.30pm) while Priory Park will visit fourthplaced Haywards Heath.

In the Sussex Premier division, Middleton's Gerhardt Abrahams was the star, smashing a majestic 144 in his side's 86-run win over Hastings & St Leonards Priory.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Abrahams was the main man to guide his side over the 200 mark as others struggled around him.

By the time he was the last man out, he had scored more than half his side's 213 runs,with the 126-ball knock including 14 fours and five sixes.

With the ball, Matt Cooke (4 for 32) wasted no time in making the most of the conditions at Horntye Park, reducing Hastings to 32 for five.

THey eventually recovered to reach 127, well short of Middleton's score.

Next up for Sean Heather's side is a return to the Sports Ground where tomorrow they will host Preston Nomads.

Hauxwell stars on the national stage DRAGONFLYERS' Izzy Hauxwell produced an inspired display on the national stage to prove she is one of the best trampolinists of her age in the country.

Hauxwell was one of a small team from the Bognor Regis-based team to take part in the first national league competition at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

With Dragonflyers' pre-competition training not going well due to school exams and health issues, coach Linda O'Leary said she had reduced expectations.

But these were quickly exceeded when Hauxwell pulled out two stunning performances to finish in fourth position in the 13/14 yrs level two (l2).

Finally, finishing in seventh overall, this sees her take 50 points towards the national finals.

Also competing were Rosie Budge and Lucy Hijmans, who both participated in their first league event l3.

Despite the nerves, they produced good showings to place them in the top half of their categories.

Sofija Kalnicenko came back from a disappointing set to pull out a 7.1 tariff in the voluntary routine that was the sixth highest ranked in the 13/14 yrs l2; while Anya Johnston's set was the third ranked in 15/16 yrs l2.

Budge, Hauxwell, Johnston and Libby Morton all represent the south next week in Birmingham at the regional ream finals.

Dragonflyers now offer recreational sessions on Monday evening for anyone interested in trampolining lessons.

Rocks aiming for new play-off push as manager hunt goes on ROCKS' chiefs claim the club can push on experience another playoff rollercoaster in the coming year.

Bognor fans will remember the win over Dulwich Hamlet last month for years to come after the victory lifted the club back into the National League South.

With the new division changing its play-off format, officials at Nyewood Lane believe that the club are pushing to get themselves in the end-of-season shake-up yet again.

THat's despite the usual restrictions in terms of budget and location, which hamper the Rocks year after year.

THere is also added complications because the club still has few than 11 players on the books with less than a month to go until preseason and are yet to appoint a manager to replace Jamie Howell.

But general manager Jack Pearce told the Post he was confident the club could perform well and be competitive at a higher level.

He said: "We will be competitive and we will try to do as well as we can. We are not going in to National League South to simply consolidate."

THe new format - backed by 18 of 24 National League clubs at the AGM – will mean 7th place will be good enough to join the post-season party. Come the end of the season, 4th will play 7th and 5th play 6th over one-leg before the winners take on the teams that finished 2nd and 3rd.

THose that come out on top of the mini tournament will then be promoted to the fifth tier of English football.

Pearce pointed to the change as a reason to lift Rocks' hopes going into the new season.

He said: "With the change of the situation for promotion where it's the top seven not the top five in the playoffs, a third of the entire league will be up there competing come the end of the season. It's our aim to get in the top third. THat's the way it will be.

"We'll be doing what we always do and that's trying to find hunger for success based on formula of young players with a little bit of expertise."

THere was no more news out of Nyewood this week in terms of adding to the squad of nine.

Both goalkeeper Dan Lincoln and defender Sami El-Abd are still yet to confirm if they will remain at the club for the next season.

Most of the focus, though, has been on the search for Howell's replacement, with interviews for the manager taking place over the past week.

Pearce said there were about eight candidates for the role and he was clear on the type of person that he wanted.

He said: "We want to be very successful in the south but it's a very difficult job for anyone that wants to manage the club.

"THere's not the density of population to find people who live nearby."

Pompey friendly change of date THE ROCKS' friendly with Portsmouth has been brought forward a day, now taking place on Tuesday, July 18, at 7pm.

THe match at Nyewood Lane against last year's League Two champions is the standout fixture in Bognor's pre-season line-up.

Also visiting the Lane are Crawley Town on July 26 (7.45pm), the League Two side who will be under the leadership of former Champions League winner Harry Kewell.

First up, though, is a trip to Woodside Road to play Ryman Premier outfit Worthing on July 8 (3pm) before the Rocks head to Chichester City on July 14 (7.30pm).

Another note for the diary for Rocks' regulars is July 4 for the Supporters Club AGM, which will take place at the club from 7.30pm. All are welcome. * Pagham FC have announced their first two pre-season friendlies ahead of the upcoming SCFL Premier season.

THe Nyewood Lane side will host Wessex League side Baffins Milton Rovers on July 25 (7.30pm). Before that, THe Lions will make the short trip to Shoreham on July 11 with the home side unsure if they will be in the Ryman South or SCFL Premier due to Haywards Heath's appeal over docked points.

IT'S less than a month now until the Rocks return to action.

All thoughts now are turning to next season - even though the club currently has no manager and nine players on the books.

In the off-season, the Post will be speaking to those around the club for a behindthe-scenes guide as the club gets ready for life back in the National League South.

THis week, it's the second part of a Q&A with forward Ollie Pearce, who has committed to the club for another year.

What have you been up to since the end of the season?

THe last month has been very much about having a rest. I try not to think much about football during this time; it's a long season and with the playoffs there was the extra week so I'm trying to get as much rest as I can.

It has crossed my mind with next season and what needs to be done at the higher level.

We still have got players to come in and I'm trying to not really think too much about how we will get on.

But the good thing is with the FA trophy run we did have a good run against sides in higher divisions the season before last.

We have always got that to look back on. We are full of confidence after winning promotion so there's no reason why we can't give a good account of ourselves.

How do you go about getting ready for pre-season?

Personally, and I'm sure a lot of us do the same, I'll have two or three weeks off immediately after the end of the season.

THen it's back on to the hard work and I have got my own personal trainer who I work with two or three times a week.

THat keeps me ticking over until the real hard work starts.

All the squad will come back together at the start of July and then we obviously have three or four weeks before the season starts.

I'm not worrying too much

about that for now though. I have a week's holiday which I think I've deserved.

I'll go and enjoy that before focussing on getting myself back in to the shape that I need to be.

How would you describe the club's pre-season training?

Neil [Cockcroft, the club's fitness coach] runs the sessions and to be blunt I'm not saying I'm looking forward to seeing him.

THe club goes down to East Dean to do the pre-season. I think Jack knows a few people down there as we've been going down there ever since I joined.

It's a perfect spot as we are always up in the hills running and then there is a football pitch, too, which is nice and flat.

Have there been any horror stories from pre-season where Neil pushes people a bit too hard?

[Laughs] Yes, there has been a little bit of that. Different people keep themselves in different types of shape over the close season.

I won't lie, he has got me close a few times as he does like to run us quite badly.

I have seen a few players throw up during a tough session but it's not quite as bad as the stories you hear from the 70s or 80s.

Which pre-season game are you looking forward to?

We always have good preseason fixtures and this year is no different with the Portsmouth and Crawley games.

I hope it gives some new supporters the chance to come down and experience the great atmosphere down there at the Lane.

Hopefully fans will be patient with us as it will not be like last season where we were sitting at the top of the league all year.

But we'll work hard and I hope they'll pack out the Nye Camp and enjoy the year ahead.
