Incredible Roman find in city

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A PRIVATE Roman bath house, belonging to the richest Romans in Chichester, has been unearthed in one of the city’s parks.

It has been described as “a once in a life time opportunity for local archaeological volunteers to uncover a find like this".

THe remains of three Roman buildings

were originally identified under Chichester’s Priory Park, using groundpenetrating radar equipment and a small dig was originally carried out to confirm this.

James Kenny, Chichester District Council’s archaeologist, has been working solidly for over a week with the help of Chichester and District Archaeology Society to uncover the secrets beneath Priory Park.

He said: "For Chichester this is a really exciting find. It's very well preserved.

"Most of the Roman archaeology in Chichester doesn't survive anywhere near as complete as this. It's a reasonably rare thing.

"Chichester probably had several posh houses in the late Roman period but I bet not many survived anywhere near as good a condition as this.

INITIAL formal proposals for up to 2,300 homes in North Bersted have been submitted.

Planning experts Lichfields have compiled a scoping report for the major development off Chalcraft Lane.

THis sets out the extent of the compulsory environment impact assessments which will be submitted with an outline planning application on behalf of the landowners, the Church Commissioners and the Langmead Group, represented by Landlink Estates.

THe report is being considered by Arun District Council. It sets out how subjects like transport, water, landscape character and air quality will be affected by the large-scale development.

As well as housing, the proposed development on the 141 hectare site would include up to ten hectares of employment land, a three-form entry primary school and a community hub for shops, healthcare facilities and library.

A road/pedestrian/cycle link between the A259 and Chalcraft Lane will be provided, along with improvements to the A259 between Bersted and Drayton.

But the proposals were heavily criticised at a meeting of West Meads residents. THey were warned the extra homes would cause traffic chaos for the estate's residents.

Marion Woolgar said she feared the prospect of some 5,000 additional vehicles a day from the housing would make traffic conditions impossible for those who lived nearby.

"It is going to be an accident waiting to happen. Drivers coming out of West Meads Drive and trying to turn right

into Chalcraft Lane are already queuing back to the fire station because there is so much more traffic along Chalcraft Lane in the 18 months since the bypass opened.

"THere is nothing in Arun District Council's local plan about improving Chalcraft Lane. It talks about improving the A259 between North Bersted and Drayton and about improved cycle links but there are no measures to control the traffic on Chalcraft Lane.

"If you are going to put upwards of 2,500 houses on land next to it, there is going to be upwards of 5,000 cars. All of them will come out on that road," she said.

"THere is also all the traffic from the proposed housing in Pagham which is going to go along there."

THe emergency meeting was held by West Meads Residents' Association last THursday to inform residents about the consultation into the modifications to Arun's draft local plan land use blueprint.

About 75 people attended the session in the community hall.

THey were urged by the association's chairman, Ray Collins, to put their objections about the document to the district council before Tuesday's deadline.

"I hope everyone realises how serious this is for us," he said. "You definitely need to make a response."

Community fun day is a success HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a community day out organised by a local church.

THe fun day, which took place in the Kingsham housing estate, was organised by Grace Church.

More than 800 people turned out to watch demonstrations by local community groups and clubs, joined in craft activities, face painting, live music, games, stalls, a barbecue and a raffle.

THe whole event was completely free with 970 burgers being given out.

Chris Kimbangi is a church leader.

He said: "It was an excellent day.

When people think of the church they think that's it's boring or it's just older people or that the church just wants your money.

"We wanted to show that we can have lots of fun. We have a mix of ages.

We just wanted people to enjoy the day.

"We wanted to help the community and give the community an opportunity to come together and for no one to be discriminated against.

"It didn't matter if you were homeless or a millionaire - everyone can come together and be equal. THere was something for every age.

"THere were games for children and there were older people there having cake and listening to live music."

Around 300 party bags were given out as well as countless cups of tea and coffee.

THe only charge for the day was £1 for an ice cream.

Bikers: Keep safe on roads

Roman Week is a seven day festival celebrating Chichester's Roman Heritage organised by the Novium Museum in partnership with Chichester's BID. It's the second year that the event has taken place. It featured talks, heritage trails, guided tours and family activities at cultural venues, shops and restaurants throughout the city centre.

THere was also a Centurion standing at THe Cross chatting to people and having selfies taken.

Cathy Hakes, manager of THe Novium Museum, said: "Chichester was established by the Romans so there's

just so much heritage to see all around us.

"It's been about raising awareness.

People loved the Centurion.

"THis is just to let people learn more abut the Roman roots of Chichester.

"We also wanted to use the festival to draw visitors into the city and to generate business for local businesses.

"Lots of people have been coming in and enjoying the activities."

Chichester was first established as Noviomagnus Reginorum, which translates to 'New market of the proud people' after the Roman invasion in AD43.

THeir legacy can be found across the city, including magnificent features such as the Roman walls surrounding the city and the Roman bathhouse located in THe Novium Museum.

FIREFIGHTERS are reminding motorcyclists to take care when out on the road.

As part of National Motorcycle Week of Action, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is asking all riders to take extra care.

Motorcyclists make up just one per cent of total UK road traffic - but they account for nearly a fifth (19 per cent) of all road user deaths.

At the scene of a road traffic collision, action taken in the first few moments can be vital in minimising injuries.

WSFRS is running a series of Biker Down courses throughout the county this summer to help keep motorcyclists safe.

Biker Down is a scheme run by police and fire services across the country. THe workshops cover a wide range of aspects including first aid and safety skills to be used at the scene of a collision.

Richard Poole, Biker Down Instructor, said: “In 2016, 107 bikers were killed or seriously injured in West Sussex. THese collisions can be avoided and we are asking everyone to help keep our roads safe."

THe next workshop locally is on Tuesday, September 26, at Bognor Regis Fire Station, from 6.30pm until 10pm.

Sport boost for economy VICTORY in the America’s Cup by Sir Ben Ainslie could generate as much as £140m for the south coast economy, according to a report.

A study by the University of Chichester has revealed the potential economic impact of the sailor winning the competition on Portsmouth and its surrounding regions.

THe report assessed the monetary value of Sir Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team finishing first and returning the event to their base at the south coast city.

THe research was undertaken by principal lecturer Dr Andrew Clegg, who specialises in tourism management at the University of Chichester’s Business School.

He said: “THe £140m figure is a conservative total as the actual impact will depend on how effectively the public and private sectors come together to deliver the returning event.

“Trying to establish the value of an event of this magnitude is always problematic due to the number of variables that would influence the overall economic impact.

“Any impact must also mitigate against any potential displacement of economic activity that would take place in Portsmouth anyway.”

Challengers of the 35th America’s Cup set sail on Saturday.

THe report forecasts the economic impact of hosting the returning victory event will generate at least £24m for the south coast economy.

Praise for council recycling scheme

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk MORE than three tonnes of extra recycling is being collected every fortnight from communal housing in West Sussex, as a result of an awardwinning trial project.

Led by West Sussex County Council, the West Sussex Waste Partnership has been recognised for delivering the ‘Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative’ at a prestigious awards ceremony which took place last month.

THe Partnership beat national competition to the title for successfully developing the recycling rates of flats and communal properties at the 2017 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

Run in operation with six district and borough councils, the project reached 1,136 households from February, 2016,until March this year.

THe trial was designed to target and improve both practical obstacles and residents’ attitudes towards recycling across the county.

More than 600 residents were handed more than 1,200 reusable recycling bags.

THey were then given some advice about how to recycle items and the associated benefits by the door stepping team.

New bins and signage were also put in place at the occupants’ bin stores.

THanks to residents’ efforts, over 94 per cent of their waste is now being recycled

THe reduction in landfill costs is estimated to save around £14,000 every year.

Over a year, that’s enough energy saved to run 144 TVs for six and a half hours a day.

THe project will now serve as the benchmark for local authorities going forward.

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, Deborah Urquhart, has heaped praise on the team behind the achievement.

She said: “It is a fantastic achievement and great testament to the Waste Management team for overseeing the project and our district and borough partners for carrying it out to a high standard which is worthy of national recognition.

“THis award signifies the important work that has been done to not only better, but create a lasting recycling legacy in multiple occupancy properties which are notoriously difficult to improve.”

Held at London’s Landmark Hotel, the West Sussex Waste Partnership was among 12 award recipients presented on the night by the organisers, letsrecycle. com.

Pupils highlight the problem of dog mess in their community JUNIOR wardens from a school in Tangmere have highlighted the issue of dog fouling by spray-painting dog mess that has not been cleaned up with non-permanent paint.

THe youngsters, from Tangmere Primary Academy, put paint on dog mess to not only make it obvious so residents do not step in it, but also to help emphasise the extent of the problem.

THe junior wardens scoured Tangmere Recreational Field, finding eight occurrences of dog fouling, down from over 30 found during the previous sweep.

A new dog waste bag dispenser has recently been installed, which has helped encourage owners to clean up after their dogs.

Councillor John Connor, cabinet member for environment at Chichester District Council, said: “THis is great work by our junior wardens to highlight how important it is that dog owners act responsibly and clean up after their pets.

“As a council, we are working very hard to tackle dog fouling.

"Dog mess not only blights our environment, but also poses a risk to our health."

Goodwood samples a mix of racing and food at festival

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THOUSANDS of racing fans enjoyed a mixture of horse racing and fine food at Goodwood last weekend.

Around 22,000 people went to the Festival of Food and Racing which took place at Goodwood Racecourse over three days.

Chefs from Delicious magazine took part in cookery demonstrations and people were able to enjoy free samples.

THe Great Taste Market was also a hive of activity, with award-winning stallholders selling their produce throughout the meeting.

Wine tasting sessions were also taking place in the Richmond enclosure and were very popular.

Tortie Farrand is from Great Taste.

She said: "We have been working with different events across the country over the last few years.

"Goodwood held a one day racing and food event last year which was a great success so they decided to make it a three-day festival this year.

"It's a different market for us in terms of getting across to different consumers.

"It was certainly a different day for us. In terms of the way that the racing works, people would disappear to watch the race and then the tent would fill up between

races.

"It just gave an added value to the racegoers' day as well in terms of being able to try award-winning food that has been through rigorous taste tests."

Now, Tortie is hoping that they can return again next year.

"We would like to work with Goodwood again and see if we can improve what we delivered this year and make it a very successful event going forward."

“It was fantastic to see so many people basking in the sunshine and enjoying the fabulous food on offer at this newly themed fixture," he said.

on all three days and we were treated to several very close finishes and some emerging superstars of the future.

"We are now looking forward to a busy few weeks, with our THree Friday Night fixtures kicking off with Tinie Tempah on 2 June and our brilliant Family Raceday supporting the NSPCC on 11 June.”

Charity gets a big boost A HORTICULTURAL charity has been awarded £2,500 in funding.

Grow Chichester, part of Transition Chichester, has been awarded the money by Sussex Community Foundation in its latest round of grant-giving.

THe grant will pay for improvements to the gardens, including a seating area and bench and picnic table, a pergola to provide shade, non-slip pathways for improved accessibility and the continued provision of a horticultural therapist to lead the gardening sessions.

Julia Sander, secretary of Transition Chichester, said: “We are delighted to have received this grant. It means we can continue to support the local community and those with mental and physical health issues through gardening in Chichester and we’re really grateful for the continued support of Sussex Community Foundation and its donors.”

Grow Chichester has created various community gardens and orchards within the city and holds weekly therapeutic gardening sessions for around 25 vulnerable service users each week.

Rhubarb's cuisine makes for a super enjoyable day out at Goodwood races

by Ruth Scammell LAST week I was invited to enjoy a spectacular array of dishes at Goodwood by Rhubarb.

THe food was astonishingly good. I sampled dishes from two new menus called Virtuous and Indulgence.

I was given a cocktail on my arrival which I enjoyed in the racecourse's newest restaurant and bar, THe Sussex Roof Garden.

I was then taken into a private box where I enjoyed a range of delicious gourmet dishes including a selection of canapés, a seasonal cold vegetable soup and a superfood salad to

start.

THe main dish was a beautifully cooked fillet of beef with a 48 hour braised short rib, triplecooked chips and aioli.

THroughout the day I was offered sparkling rose, white and red wine.

My sweet tooth made the dessert the winner though - starting off with a mango sorbet, it was followed by an amazing salted caramel chocolate fondant with ice cream and a raspberry coulis. After that I was offered afternoon tea - if I could fit it in! Overall, an incredible day with a fabulous view of the races!

THe dig has revealed that there were two Roman townhouses on the site – one of which had its own private bath house – which would have been owned by someone of great wealth and importance.

THis week’s archaeological dig aimed to explore the area in more detail and to uncover the secrets of the third building, which had an unusual shape.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning at Chichester District Council, added: “THis discovery is very exciting.

We know that this has created a lot of interest and local residents are intrigued by what has been discovered on their doorstep and so we have enjoyed giving people the opportunity to visit the site and see the discoveries.

“Chichester’s rich Roman history already attracts people from far and wide, due to its city walls and its public Roman Bath House, which is located in our Novium Museum. We hope that these further discoveries will encourage even more people to visit our beautiful city.”

James added: “What’s remarkable about this discovery is that it has survived over 1,000 years in an occupied city. THis is because they are under a park that has never been built on.

“It’s almost unique to see Roman remains survive in this type of setting and to be so complete.

“What we’ve found is a hot room from a very small, private bath suite that would have gone with an extremely well appointed, luxurious town house. THese

properties would have definitely have been owned by the richest people in the city.

“THe location definitely marks one of the most affluent parts of the Roman Town, with these houses being the equivalent of a property worth millions of pounds in today’s society.

"Only someone who was incredibly wealthy could have owned a bath house like this and paid for it to be maintained.

THey would have either made their money out of commerce and trading, or were a member of the local aristocracy.

“We don’t know the date of the site yet, but it was probably third or fourth century AD. THis was quite late in the history of Roman Chichester – but at the time when it was in its heyday.

“THe scans show that the two houses have walls surrounding complete rooms, which may be set around a courtyard or atrium. THere is also a deep masonry building with a rounded end, which we now know is a private bath house.”

James believed that the houses were originally located on a street, but that this has not survived because of the World War Two reservoir that was built in the park. THe scans reveal that another Roman street ran further east under Priory Park, but this will not be uncovered.

“We now hope to use the evidence that we have gathered to bid for money to fund future excavations, which will focus on one of the town houses,” said James.

“THis discovery is a unique part of Chichester’s history, and so we’ve really enjoyed speaking to lots of people who have visited the site to see the dig take place. Chichester has such a wealth of history and so it is great that people are so interested in it."

Recruitment drive for retained firefighters across the county FIREFIGHTERS are holding a recruitment drive this summer.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is continuing its retained firefighter recruitment drive with a second Havea-Go Day, to be held at Chichester Fire Station on Saturday , June 24, from 10am until 3pm.

Retained firefighters – community members who are on-call to respond to incidents as needed – solely staff 14 of WSFRS’s 25 stations and support crews at nine other stations.

Gary Locker, WSFRS Western Group Commander, said: “We are working very hard to stem the gap we currently have in terms of our retained firefighter numbers. Our current crews do an absolutely superb job but they need more colleagues.

“Our Have-a-Go days aim to give people a chance to ask questions of current retained firefighters, to try some of the physical tests and to use some of the equipment involved in the recruitment process."

Major award for lecturer A LECTURER said she felt honoured after being awarded a City and Guilds Medal of Excellence.

Chichester College lecturer Holly Hackney received the award which celebrates the successes of learners and tutors across the country.

Medal winners are also put forward for a People’s Choice award.

Hospital team take on trek in support of dementia care

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A TEAM of hospital hikers have conquered the highest mountain in the British Isles, raising thousands of pounds for dementia care.

THe 26-strong team from across St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, and Worthing Hospital took part in the group trek with a fundraising target of £10,000 for Love Your Hospital, the dedicated charity for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

THe group had to navigate over rocky terrain, around boulders and steep drops with experienced guides to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Ben Nevis in Scotland is renowned for its unpredictable and rapidly changing weather conditions and the colleagues battled blizzards, rain and snow on the 1,345m journey up above sea level to reach the misty peak.

Trust chaplain David Hill, said: “THe weather was atrocious. At one point we couldn’t see 10 yards in front of us, but the group were fantastic and we all supported each other. I loved every minute of it and we’ve been able to make the lives of our dementia patients better in the process.”

Deputy director of nursing, Dr. Maggie Davies, and trust chairman, Mike Viggers, both spearheaded the fundraising challenge, rallying their

colleagues to join them. Mr Viggers’ mother had vascular dementia.

THe hikers took nine hours to complete the trek, which was timed to take place during Dementia Awareness Week.

Clinical matron Katie Kimber said: “I lost my mother-in-law to dementia so this charity challenge meant an awful lot to me and it was a great personal achievement too.”

THere are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, with the cost of

care expected to more than double in the next 25 years, from £26bn to £55bn in 2040.

Frances Usher-Smith, matron for dementia at the trust, said the funds raised would be instrumental in helping wards provide even better care for patients.

Amanda Tucker, head of Love Your Hospital, said: “To take on Ben Nevis in favourable weather is challenging enough, but our hospital hikers endured

really tough conditions, making the terrain underfoot much more treacherous.”

“THe team trained hard around their busy lives and roles at the trust and have achieved so much. We’re all confident that the money will make a real difference for the growing number of people we care for who have dementia.

"On behalf of all of us at Love Your Hospital, we’re incredibly proud of each and every one of them.”

Fire service bids to recruit new volunteers WEST SUSSEX Fire and Rescue Service is launching a recruitment drive for new volunteers to support firefighters in their community activities across the county.

WSFRS is looking for people from across the county.

THe WSFRS volunteer scheme has been running for five years and comprises members of the community from all walks of life who are willing to give up just a few hours a month to support activities such as awareness events and home safety visits.

THe scheme includes various roles to suit all abilities, from office-based work, making phone calls, and undertaking home visits to leaflet dropping, working with young people and supporting crews at prevention events. THere are opportunities to support the service.

Sophie Malthouse, volunteer manager, said: “We’re looking for anyone who has a little spare time and is willing to give something back to their local community.

"Our firefighters rely on the support of their voluntary colleagues for a wide range of activities so the volunteer role can be very varied.

"It is a good opportunity to meet new people and we offer training and support to our volunteers from basic first aid and CPR training to fire appliance familiarity sessions.

"If this is something you could be interested in, we’d love to hear from you.”

College teams up with China CHICHESTER COLLEGE has unveiled an innovative new partnership, which will see its commitment to international learning continue to grow.

THe college has teamed up with PAM Education and the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission in China to pilot a transnational blended learning programme.

THe partnership was launched with a special ceremony held at the college’s training restaurant and kitchens.

THe launch brought together staff and students at the college, alongside representatives from Tianjin and PAM Education as well as a live link to China.

THe first project – a culinary skills programme - will start in September and will enable Chinese students to access online workshops, which will be filmed and recorded at Chichester College and streamed to students at the Tianjin No 2 School of Commerce (TSC) using cutting-edge technology that has been developed by PAM Education.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College principal, said: “THis is an exciting partnership which has great potential to grow.

“Working closely with international educational institutions is an important part of the work we do here at Chichester – we want to see the college develop both at home and

abroad.

“THe project has great potential for the college and for students and tutors in China to learn from different locations and develop new skills.”

“I enjoyed having a go at making the dough pandas – I wasn’t expecting to do something like that so that was interesting and a bit different.”

` Sight loss help for residents AN EXPERT at living with sight loss will be providing advice at Bognor Regis Library next week.

West Sussex County Council rehabilitation officer for the visually impaired (ROVI) Richard Jones will be on hand to answer questions from individuals on issues including mobility, managing domestic needs and accessing communications.

His Q&A session will take place from 10am-midday next Tuesday at the London Road library.

THe drop-in event will be for those affected by sight loss and their friends and relatives. THey will be able to find out how to adjust to life with reduced vision from one of the county’s sight rehabilitation specialists.

Richard will be joined by outreach worker Dan Batchelor from Bognor Regis-based charity 4Sight, which helps visually impaired people live independently.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for stronger, safer communities, said: “We hope the event will encourage our residents to talk openly about their day to day struggles, no matter how simple they seem, and not suffer in silence.

“Despite being tough to come to terms with, it is vital to talk to someone about the difficulties you or a loved one may be experiencing.

"THe day will provide a relaxed atmosphere with people who may share a similar situation to yourself, and even ask a question that’s been weighing on your mind."

Runners turn park into a beach for third birthday

BEACHWEAR put the fun into parkrun for the Bognor Regis event's third anniversary.

Grass skirts worn by men and women, inflatables, a surfboard and bikinis added to the celebrations for the 155th of the weekly runs around Hotham Park.

Two of those who dressed up for the occasion were mother and daughter, Michele Smith and Tiki Hills.

Michele, 57, of Felpham, said: "THis is my sixth run. It gets us up and out on Saturdays and gives us a bit of exercise as well as being good camaraderie."

Tiki, 32, of Littlehampton, said: "I started parkrun in January and dressing like this is all part of the fun."

Taking the watery theme to the extreme was Bognor Regis town centre resident Dave Skidmore, who completed the 5km course as a dolphin.

He said: "It's been really hot running in this. I don't have any beachwear and this outfit was the closest thing they had at the Arena Sports Centre where I work.

"I got a good response as I ran around but I think a few runners were a bit taken aback to be overtaken by a dolphin."

Last Saturday was the 243rd day in a row in which Dave, 43, had run before and just after his first marathon in Windermere in the Lake District the previous Sunday which he finished in 3hr 41mins.

THe first of the 283 runners to finish was parkrun ambassador Mike Houston, who oversees eight of the weekly events. A further five are planned.

He said: "THese events are all about getting the community together. THey are not just a run.

"THey are one of the best things that have ever been started. THey are getting people fit and active and outside.

"I came here for the first one and it's such a great feeling. Everyone is smiling. It's like being on holiday every week."

THe Bognor Regis parkrun was the first between Havant and Brighton when it was started by Ben Bowers and Jason Rae. Run director Ben said: "Parkrun in Bognor Regis is going from strength to strength.

"I expected it to be popular but not this popular. THere are a lot more people running around the town. I think it's a more popular thing to do than ever.

"THat's due to parkrun as well as clubs like the Tone Zone Runners and the new Promenade Plodders - and it can be seen in the record number of finishers in this year's Bognor Prom 10k race."

THe parkrun's latest anniversary was also marked by the installation of a defibrillator on the park's toilet block.

Ben said: "Parkrun rules state we have to have a defibrillator close to our start.

But we didn't want to have one just for ourselves.

"We use the park for free every week and we decided to put something back and make the defibrillator available for everyone. THe lives of some of our members have been touched by cardiac arrests." THe £1,400 cost was met by donations.

Yo ho ho and a day full of fun A BOGNOR REGIS school was overrun by swashbuckling students as part of their annual pirate day.

Year 3 pupils from the Edward Bryant School embraced the pirate theme fully and arrived at school in their best buccaneering outfits.

THe fun-filled day marked the end of their pirate-related studies and combined practical activities with everything they had already learned.

Students were divided into groups and alternated between outdoor activities, craft-making and meeting the enthusiastic History Man who was there to bring the past to life.

THe children especially enjoyed meeting David Cadle, the History Man, who also donned his finest pirate clothes and brought along plenty of knowledge, anecdotes and artefacts.

Teacher Mrs Wayne was impressed by how the children interacted with him.

She said: “THe History Man has been great. He’s had the children laughing and getting involved all day.”

THe classes found plenty to enjoy from the History Man. Miles Simons, aged eight, said: “I’ve enjoyed getting loads of new facts. It’s also exciting to see different things and learn from them.”

THe pirate weaponry, treasure, pictured inset, and equipment provided by the History Man were also a hit with the children.

To signal the end of the day, a cannon was fired in the playground, which was something the students were excited to see.

Winston Wong, eight, said: “It’s been really good. I’m going to enjoy the end of the day when they fire the cannon.”

His peer Keira Weed, also aged eight, agreed: “I think I’m going to like the cannon shooting best. But I also I liked holding the weapons like the swords.”

Both the pupils and teachers enjoyed the hands-on day.

Assistant headteacher Mr Whitby said: “It’s been a fantastic day to finish their topic. THey have had loads of fun."

MORE consultation is needed before GPs in Eastergate can build their new surgery.

THe extra advertising about the proposal to replace THe Croft Surgery has to be carried out because its opening hours it could differ from those given in the plans.

Councillors were due to impose a restriction limiting patients' access to 7am-8pm weekdays and 8.30ammidday, Saturdays. THe hours for the pharmacy intended to be located within the surgery would be 9am-6pm weekdays and 9am-4pm Saturdays. But councillors agreed to approve the scheme with longer opening hours subject to residents being able to comment about them.

THe move was decided after the surgery's planning agent, Jonathan Best, told Arun District Council's development control committee last Wednesday: "We would like the condition limiting opening hours changed...on the basis that, if somebody needs medical attention, that should be acceptable even if it does not confirm to the opening hours on the door of the practice."

Arun planning officer Daniel Vick said one of the new surgery's car parks would be close to housing.

"We would have to consult with our environmental health officers to see if they would have a problem with that and, if they did, could it be resolved," he said."

THe new surgery will replace the existing building in Barnham Road.

It was built in 1992 for 6,500 patients but now serves 11,000.

Students enjoy glimpse of uni MOCK court trials and using DNA to solve pretend crimes were among the tasks carried out by Felpham pupils to encourage them to attend university.

A total of 46 students from Felpham Community College successfully completed the latest Making Choices programme designed for 12-14-yearolds. Many were from groups underrepresented in higher education and could be the first in their family to become an undergraduate.

One of the Year 9 students, Scarlet Cooper, said: "My favourite workshop was the DNA one. It looked at identifying animal DNA and also the work the police do with suspects and DNA. "I always thought I would consider

university after my GCSEs and now I definitely want to."

Half of the college's groups who attended the sessions at Sussex University followed the life sciences, pharmacy and robotics workshop. THe other half followed the social sciences of law, sociology and politics.

Students also learned about the pastoral side of university and asked student ambassadors questions before they attended a ceremony to celebrate completing the programme.

Gill Woodman, the college's careers co-ordinator, said: "It was great to see the students' enthusiasm within the workshops. You could see they found it interesting how subjects develop."

FLORIST Gill Homer has created silver from birch and clematis.

Rose Green resident Gill was awarded a silver gilt medal for her entry in the first session of the National Association of Flower Arranger Societies' floral art and design competition held at the worldfamous Chelsea Flower Show.

Her entry was constructed on a plinth in class B – Destination Unknown,and was titled Continuum. THe sinuous construction of birch twigs and clematis vine was embellished with orange calla lilies, roses and Sandy Brown Vanda orchids.

Gill, a member of the West Bognor Flower Club, also competed at Chelsea in 2016. She and fellow flower club member Lucinda Knapman won a silver gilt medal for their entry in the Gardener's Delight class.

She said: THe judging criteria for this year's competition was changed in order to lift the standard, so making it more difficult to win medals."

Her double silver successes have seen her set her heart on winning a gold medal at the event. She hopes to be invited next year to give her a chance to attain her goal.

Magical bargains found at Majestic this week Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

AS WE approach summer with the merry month of June, I decided to pop into Majestic, Chichester, to sample some of their finer June offers in search of some unknown gems.

Wine guru Ellie, pictured far right to the left of me, pointed me in the direction of three white wines which had caught my attention in the Majestic Offers booklet sent to me every month.

Kick-starting summer, the 2016 Domaine De La Tourmaline Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie from Saint Fiacre, in close proximity to Nantes and thus from the heart of Muscadet territory, has a refreshing and natural spritz and exudes citrus fruits with a hint of melon and, at a reduced offer price of £7.99, if one of six bottles or more is kind both to your taste buds and pocket and a very palatable example of this sadly underrated wine.

All prices henceforth will assume the wine is one of six bottles or more.

At an offer price of £9.99, the Domaine Du Chapitre 2015 Bourgogne Chardonnay, recommended by Ellie, proved to be much more than an entrylevel Burgundy and was indeed distinctive

with pleasing fruit flavours, a hint of cream soda, subtly oaked and a veritable joy on the palate - an offer to merit your serious consideration as stock thereof is limited and so meritorious of your attention!

Qualité prix this wine is a winner.

Upping the outlay to £13.99 I espied a Jean-Pierre Bailly 2016 Les Griottes Pouilly Fumé from the Loire region of France gooseberry, citrus and stone fruit on the palate - a classic Pouilly Fumé with floral notes and a wine worth researching! THis wine from up to 40-year-old vines planted on the argilo limestone and kimmeridgian clay has balanced acidity with good ripe fruit characteristics and dry grassy notes

and is a classy, elegant offering!

Contemplating the reds on offer, I went back to an important rule when selecting wines - namely that of seeking out the best producers, so it was an instant decision to try a Guigal wine from the French Rhône area.

THe Guigal estate was founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis and currently is on its third generation of winemakers with head winemaker Philippe at the helm and this family is a major part of the Rhône's resurgence in recent decades.

THe Côtes Du Rhône E. Guigal of 2013 vintage is silky smooth and with its high percentage of the syrah grape, namely

50 per cent with grenache and a touch of mourvèdre and its 18-month ageing in oak foudres produces an ample, beautifully structured ripe and spicy wine drinkable now but which will keep until 2021.

A veritable delight at the offer price of £10.99 - dark fruit to savour and a great accompaniment to any red meat.

Two Riojas next caught my eye and the Viña Alarde 2011 Reserva is woody and earthy and matured in American Oak for a minimum of two years and has vanilla overtones and, at an offer price of £7.99, is a reasonably priced Rioja Reserva worth a punt!

THe more expensive Imperial Reserva Rioja of 2011 vintage exudes smoothness, a deep berry nose with blackberries and liquorice and mature tannins adding to the undoubted elegance of this fine wine.

At an offer price of £19.99 this wine has imperial appeal!

THe Château de Villemajou Grand Vin 2012 Corbières Boutenac proved to be a fine wine experience with leather and roasted coffee to the fore and priced at £16.49 is a wine worth exploring.

To fully inject sparkle into your summer, look no further than the Cloudy Bay Pelorus which has crisp apple flavours with a nutty, yeasty complexity to rival any low-level Champagne and is a good purchase at an offer price of just £17.99.

To round off your evening I propose a nip of the fine cognac pictured above, namely the Grands Domaines Cognac VSOP awarded the prestigious best cognac in the world in 2014.

THe time spent in French oak barrels has given this single estate cognac vanilla notes and a roundness that contributes to its elegance, although you will have to part with £42 if you wish to avail yourself of this delight!

Method 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6 and line a baking tray with foil. Season the salmon fillets and put them on the tray, skin-side down. Drizzle the tops with a little oil and cook for 10-12 mins.

2. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the beetroot,

celeriac, carrots, vinegar, remaining oil, the seeds and some seasoning. Spoon the pesto and soured cream into a small bowl, mix, then season. Serve the salmon fillets with the crunchy slaw and pesto sauce.

Treating Fibromyalgia naturally FIBROMYALGIA is an unpleasant disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue.

People with fibromyalgia have pain and tenderness throughout the body, but sufferers may also experience trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, painful menstrual periods, tingling or numbness in their hands and feet and problems with their memory and thinking straight.

While no one magic food will prevent a person's flare-ups, a number of dietary improvements can make a world of difference and may alleviate even the most daunting symptoms.

Anyone suffering from fibromyalgia knows how debilitating it can be.

One of the most important things I can advise is to improve your overall health and wellbeing.

If you have been diagnosed with this condition from now on in order to maintain your health and energy, you have to put the time and effort into looking after yourself nutritionally.

I know, I know!

It's always about the fruits and vegetables! Why? Because they are typically low in calories, high in fibre, and rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

THat’s good news for those who are, respectively battling obesity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or autoimmune disorders.

THese are all common among fibromyalgia patients (not always, but sometimes). Plus, natural foods lack the additives that can aggravate symptoms.

Preservatives and colouring tend to have a

condition because it helps people avoid those sugar rushes.

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of fibromyalgia, but using caffeine to combat this symptom can actually exacerbate the problem.

What many people do when they feel exhausted is self-medicate with caffeine! All this does is give yourself a boost, but then you have that energy crash.

Caffeine intake can also trigger headaches and interfere with sleep patterns, which can further perpetuate fatigue.

Like caffeine, sugar and white flour carbohydrates, can provide a temporary surge in energy followed by a big low slump. Fibromyalgia patients often experience general hypersensitivity and that can translate into increased sensitivity to blood-sugar highs and lows.

While reducing sugar intake can be beneficial, you may also want to steer clear of sweet snacks that use aspartame or saccharine as a sweetener.

Anything that has a chemical basis tends to be hard on people with fibromyalgia. THat may seem like a double-edged sword, but you can curb sugar cravings by eating complex carbs or sweet veggies like sweet potatoes, squash, or carrots.

Basically, including very alkalising foods into your diet, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, and removing the processed artificial foods, you will help your body naturally to reduce inflammation.

It’s the inflammation that causes the pain and discomfort, so addressing your diet has to be the best

way to protect yourself.

Herbs can also be extremely beneficial when it comes to treating Fibromyalgia, such as: 1. Grape seed extract. THe oil in the seeds of wine grapes contains powerful antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatory compounds called procyanidins.

THey may help to inhibit the inflammatory response, which is responsible for muscle pain and soreness in some people.

2. Siberian ginseng. Also known as eleuthero, this medicinal herb is said to enhance immunity, fight fatigue, boost energy, and assist the body in dealing with stress. It's frequently included in nutritional support programs for people with fibromyalgia.

3. St. John's wort tincture. THis liquid tonic form of St. John's wort (not capsules or tea) is a common alternative to prescription muscle relaxers. Patients taking prescription antidepressant medication, however, should not use this herb without their doctor's approval.

4. Valerian taken as a dietary supplement. Valerian may help regulate sleep patterns as well as ease insomnia and anxiety, all common symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Community News & Views CLASSICAL guitarist Rossini Bartolotti-Hayward will be giving a recital tomorrow at the West Sussex Guitar Club.

Rossini was born in 1981 in London. As a young child, he was deaf and only gained the normal ability to hear at the age of five after many operations.

Perhaps as a result of being denied sound in his early years, he became immediately interested in music, wanting nothing more than a violin for his sixth birthday.

In his teens, having already become a proficient violinist, he decided to take up the electric guitar. He taught himself and quickly became a good player.

It was during his studies of engineering science at St Anne's College, Oxford, in his early 20s that Rossini found what was to become his passion - the classical guitar.

He at once became absorbed in the instrument, almost leaving Oxford to pursue his musical ambitions.

His parents persuaded him to stay on and finish his studies, which he duly did, graduating with a First in Masters of Engineering.

Within weeks, he was offered a job in the aerospace industry, which he took, though after a year it had become very clear to him he was following a path he did not want to take.

In 2006, he was accepted with a major scholarship to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

THere he studied classical guitar for the next four years with John Mills and Graham Devine, earning a Bachelor of Music in 2010 and winning the John Mills Guitar Prize four years running.

He obtained a place to study in Germany with Sonja Prunnbauer in the Hochschule fur Musik Freiburg where he finished his Master of Music in 2012, graduating with the highest honours.

Since then, he has played concerts all over the world and is a sought-after orchestral soloist. He has studied the art of lutherie under the guidance of Sacha Novak and has built a number of guitars, as well as designing a new form of ergonomic guitar, which has been built in two models.

He is a passionate arranger and transcriber, whose recitals often include his new works.

His recital will take place at 7.30pm in the Recital Hall at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

LEADING Rotarian Eve Conway has visited Dementia Support to hear about the charity's plans for a pioneering hub.

Eve is the Rotary Great Britain & Ireland president and was interested in the idea of the hub and the services it will provide for those with dementia and their friends. She was keen to keep in touch and support the project.

THe charity intends to open the hub at its Tangmere base next spring. A spokeswoman said: "THe new hub will change the lives of over 5,000 people living with dementia in the Chichester, Bognor Regis, Arundel, Selsey, Witterings, Emsworth, Midhurst and Petworth areas.

"THe hub will provide essential services for people living with dementia, their friends, family and carers."

THe services will include memory assessment clinics, a befriender service so each person who visits the hub will be able to access the relevant information, day care services to provide respite to carers and therapeutic sessions such as music.

A TEAM from the Aldingbourne Country Centre put on their walking shoes for its charity operator.

Andrew Pickthall, one of the people supported by the Aldingbourne Trust, joined staff members Luke Blackman and Sam Martin to organised the sponsored walk to Halnaker Windmill.

THey devised three options for the walk - 5.5 miles, 3.5 miles or 1.5 miles - and 29 people with a learning disability, and who the trust support, along with staff members started the trek and arrived at the windmill 90 minutes later, pictured below.

A quick rest and drink, followed by an inspirational team talk, took place before they began their trek back.

John Murrell, another person supported by the trust, played his fun and inspirational walking music to keep the team's spirits high and their feet moving.

THey arrived back at the trust feeling exhilarated and talking about how proud they felt at having completed the walk.

A trust spokesman said:

"THey raised just over £300 and this will go towards developing new facilities for the people the trust support.

"Award-winning charity Aldingbourne Trust provides support and development opportunities for people with learning disabilities."

Special thanks have been given to the five community volunteers, all staff from THe Kitchen Store in Lancing, who were helping at the country centre and put on trainers instead of their usual wellies to go on the walk.

Store manager Mark Davies said: "It was a brilliant opportunity for us to speak to the people the trust support and get to know them better while helping them to the top of the hill.

"We were extremely impressed with them all."

THe walkers enjoyed beautiful weather as they used their desire to help the trust's £4m fundraising appeal to step out in high spirits.

At the country centre, the focus is on developing people's skills within a variety of social enterprises. THese include a cafe and open farm.

AS MANY as eight instrumentalists will be performing in Bognor Regis Music Club's final concert of the season tomorrow.

THe number in An Evening With Paul Dorrell climbs to ten if you include voice and violin.

Martin Cannings (violin), Lynn Whitley (viola) and Chris Cooper (cello) will perform Mozart's Quartet K285 in D major, Haydn's Quartet No 2 in G major and Boccherini's celebrated minuet, with Paul Dorrell playing flute.

In the second half, the Notos wind quartet - compromising Clare Worth (oboe), Brian Shilham (clarinet), John Peskett (horn), Anna Mayer (bassoon) and Paul Dorrell (flute) - will play Arrieu's Wind Quintet and Malcolm

Arnold's Sea Shanties.

Sopranos Tina Gelnere and Sarah Matousek, accompanied by Chris Coote, will perform songs and arias by Handel, Mozart, Saint Saens, Faure and Duparc.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "I am very grateful to Paul for putting together such an interesting and varied programme to close our successful season of concerts."

THe concert is at the club's concert room, in Sudley Road, at 7pm.

Entry at the door is £6 for members, £8 for visitors and £4 for students.

VOLUNTEERS' Week began yesterday - and Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester is celebrating the difference that volunteers make to charities and organisations in the area.

THis difference arises from their help in preventing isolation and lonelines, protecting and improving the environment and helping to provide essential services and support to those who really need it.

Most community organisations acknowledge they couldn't exist without the help of their volunteers.

Among them is St Barnabas Hospices, whose Ben Hall said: "Our volunteers are amazing and are at the heart of everything we do at St Barnabas House, our adult hospice and Chestnut Tree House, our children's hospice.

"Last year alone, the gift of their time was equal to a staggering £1.4m. Without their help, the hospices simply couldn't continue to provide vital care to local adults and children. THank you to all our volunteers - you are wonderful."

Ali Nicholson, of Worthing Churches Homeless Projects, echoes those thoughts. "Every week, from Monday to THursday, we have a team of volunteers who help at our breakfast club.

"THey help cook and serve breakfast and help to create a warm and welcoming environment for our clients. THere is no doubt that we would not be able to offer this service without the support of our volunteers," she said.

THe Aldingbourne Trust is another charity which is grateful for the contribution made by its volunteers.

Tracy Milward, from the trust, said: "Our story would not have been possible without the tireless commitment and contributions of hundreds of staff and volunteers.

"With over 115 volunteers across the whole of the trust, we rely on our amazing volunteers to help us enrich the lives of the people we support.

"THey help with important and meaningful projects allowing the Aldingbourne Trust to make a real difference and a lot of fun is had along the way. Some of our volunteers have been with us for over 20 years."

Volunteer Now! from Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester says many more examples of the help provided by volunteers can be found at charities around the area and their assistance enhanced and enriched the lives of others.

A spokesman said: "Here at Volunteer Now! we want to thank all of the volunteers that support our local charities and community groups. We think you're amazing."

UKULELE bands from around the area are collaborating to raise money for charity in an event they call UkeAid. You are all invited to let your hair down to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the summer of love and the release of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with this evening of music, food and prizes.

Alongside the live ukulele performances there will be a hog roast, bar and competitions to be won.

THere will be a raffle and a prize for the best fancy dress from that era. And if you have a ukulele, feel free to bring it and play along with us!

All proceeds from the event will go to St Wilfrid’s Hospice for their Dreambuilding project .

Fishbourne Roman Palace is getting ready to mark its golden anniversary next year

By Dr Rob Symmons, Curator at Fishbourne Roman Palace NEXT year will mark the 50th anniversary of the official opening of Fishbourne Roman Palace to the public.

A Roman presence at Fishbourne had long been suspected before it was discovered by a contractor digging a trench for a water main in 1960.

THe following eight years of excavation uncovered what was, and remains, the most extensive and most luxurious Roman home ever found in northern Europe.

Most notable among these remains were the impressive collection of in situ mosaics – the largest in Britain.

Many of the mosaics can still be seen today, partly thanks to a protective building that keeps them out of the elements, shielding them from the worst of the British weather.

However, their survival over the last half century has also been due to the tireless efforts

of successive generations of archaeologists, conservators and curators.

Roman mosaics are inherently unstable and will start to deteriorate soon after they are excavated.

For this reason, the last 50 years has seen the palace staff engaged in a constant battle to stabilise the remains to slow or halt their deterioration.

In the 1960's this involved the physical removal of mosaics from the floor, by gluing them to a fabric backing and peeling them away from the underlying sediment.

THey would then eventually be re-laid in the same location, but on a specially prepared modern surface.

THis method was certainly effective, but was incredibly invasive and there was significant potential for things to go disastrously wrong.

mosaics at Fishbourne was adopted in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

THis still involved the lifting and relaying of the floors, but instead of peeling large sections away from the underlying sediment, they were carefully cut into manageable portions.

Each portion was individually detached from the ground in a much more controlled way, minimising the risk of accidental damage.

THe famous “Cupid on a Dolphin” mosaic was lifted using this method in 256 separate sections.

While a great improvement on the older methods, this process was costly and still involved the physical removal of the mosaics and the introduction of modern materials when they were re-laid.

In recent years it has been acknowledged that, while the use of modern materials in conservation can be effective (although it turns out that the improvement is not always permanent), the long term impact of these on the ancient remains is difficult to predict, and can be damaging.

For this reason, today’s approach to the mosaics at Fishbourne is less invasive, managing the environment to prevent deterioration, rather than address problems

once they have occurred.

For example, by minimising moisture levels in the building, the floors have started to stabilize without the need to lift and relay them.

THe Palace is now engaged in a programme of cleaning some of the glues and other materials used by conservators in the past.

THese glues have started to discolour and their removal is restoring the mosaics to their former, Roman, glory.

Using only distilled water and fine blades and brushes, the work is painstaking, but the improvements are dramatic.

THe casual observer might assume that the mosaics at Fishbourne have changed little since their discovery nearly 60 years ago.

However, they are constantly, slowly, changing, and staff at the palace are continuously intervening to maintain them.

THe methods used have changed a lot over the years, but the aim has always been the same: to keep them safe for future generations to enjoy.

Chichester's slowpitch softballers are PostSport living life in the fast lane after victory CHICHESTER Falcons softball team continue to soar as sides of all standards keep on racking up the wins.

From humble beginnings in 2011, the club continues to grow on and off the diamond.

THis season, the Falcons have developed a rookie team of newbies to the sport, who continue to flourish as they prepare to start the Sussex & Surrey Softball Series in mid July.

Meanwhile, the first team have had a shaky start in the Solent Softball League, losing to UPSU Shafters and Portsmouth Dodgers in their opening games.

THey got back on track last time out with a good win over Baffins Brewers.

With the Falcons’ regular pitching staff unavailable, Ben Sawkins stepped up to pitch the game while rookies Anne Rutherford and Hettie McNeil both earned another start in right field and second base respectively.

Two home runs from junior Oliver Howley and a grand slam from shortstop David Morris gave Chichester a comfortable cushion to field with.

But the Falcons defence held up well, notably an athletic running catch from McNeil and a full-stretch tiptoe grab at first

base by Lucy Morris to keep the bases clear.

THe Brewers maintained good discipline at the plate and kept themselves moving but did not trouble the Falcons outfield enough, as a good humoured and friendly game ended 27-8 to Chichester.

Elsewhere, the Juniors Fastpitch side are moving on quickly with their current programme, with 20 boys and girls aged 11-16 working hard on their game in Oaklands Park every THursday.

THey are looking forward to the second annual junior fastpitch tournament in August, following the success of last year’s event. THe tournament is open to any junior player from the UK aged 13-16, and will include coaching and games supervised by both Falcons and GB coaching staff.

Falcons junior Oliver Howley (16) has again been selected for the GB under-19s team to play in the European Championships in Prague in July. He continues to pitch well at the Great Britain Fastpitch League under the watchful eye of GB manager Ian Tomlin.

THE BROWNLEE brothers led the way - and now wannabee triathletes are being urged to come forward to show off their all-round sporting prowess.

Chichester Westgate Triathlon Club is hosting a Go Tri 'introduction to triathlon' event tomorrow at Westgate Leisure Centre.

THis event is aimed at anyone over 16 years of age who would like to have a go at a short triathlon in a non-competitive yet highly supportive environment.

THe race consists of a 200m swim, 5km bike ride and a 2km run.

Ben Polhill, of Everyone Active, which is helping organise the event, said: "It is hoped that many people taking part in the event, possible for the first time, will want to go on and compete in the Natures Way Foods Chichester Triathlon Series taking place on July 8 and 9."

More than 80 people are currently active members of the triathlon club.

THose who take part have a wide spectrum

of skill levels, from members who just want to make it round in one piece all the way up to those representing Great Britain at amateur age group level.

THe club prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming. Its members are provided with at least four well-attended training sessions a week.

THe main focus of the season is the weekend of events in July.

THis incorporates a junior aquathlon and triathlon on the Saturday and an adult sprint distance and Olympic distance on the Sunday.

All four races cater for the complete novice as well as a seasoned triathletes.

Support on training, nutrition, equipment and race-day arrangements is also available from Everyone Active’s GB level triathletes.

DARTS: As the Friday Summer Darts League takes its match break, the first of the knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

First up was the Over 50s knockout. It didn't take long for things to get going with the only 180 of the night coming in the first round from three-time and reigning champion Andy Stubbs (Hunston Hares).

Stubbs, however, was knocked out in round two and failed to retain his title for a hat-trick.

THe first semi-final saw the 2010 champion Simon Edwards (Richmond 'B') take on Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club). Robinson made the final two years ago, and edged out Edwards to reach the final two.

THe second semi-final saw last year's runner-up John Luff (Chi Snooker Club) against Andy Cooper (Squash Club).

THis year, Luff couldn't make it to the final, as Cooper played the better game.

THe final saw Robinson win the bullseye to get the first darts, and he forged into the lead with 60, 83, 60 & 100.

Cooper then hit two tons and a 70, but he was still behind and it was too late as Robinson hit his double for the first leg.

THe second leg saw Cooper get the better start with 60, 60, 100 & 84.

Robinson then hit a ton, but it was too late. Cooper saw off the leg to take the match to the third leg.

Both players started the last leg with the same score of 60 & 100, but Robinson then hit a 140.

Cooper finally hit another ton, but it was too late as Robinson only needed 56 and took just two darts to hit the double, eventually taking the title of Over 50s Knockout Champion.

THe Ladies knockout saw 18 players take to the oche, equalled seven years ago, and only beaten once, back in 2006.

THe first semi-final saw Bridget Derwojed (Lamb Steyne) edge out Monica Roberts (Richmond 'B').

Her opponent was five-time and reigning summer league champion Hayley Gatford (Hunston Hares) who was pushed close by the reigning Benevolent League ladies champion Emma Bist (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

THe final saw Derwojed go first after winning the bullseye and she started with a score of 95.

Gatford followed with her own 95 but smaller scores allowed Derwojed to get a good lead. Gatford almost caught up, but Derwojed only needed two darts to hit the double for the first leg.

THe second leg saw a ton and 95 from Gatford, but a few good scores at the end of the leg from Derwojed brought the game back to an even score and left both players with scores of 62.

Gatford went first but it went wrong for her, leaving Derwojed with a chance. She threw the first dart high, hitting a six, but then hit single 16 and then double-top to take the leg, the game win, and the Summer Ladies Knockout Champion title in her first final.

Bognor first XI fall to narrow loss at Mayfield as seconds seal win

MIDDLETON Bowls Club lost out to Chichester B in the battle for local bragging rights in Division THree of the West Sussex Bowls League.

In what was Chi's first outing of the season, the Priory Park side showed no rustiness at all in sealing a convincing 89-54 victory.

In addition to winning three of the four legs, Chi took eight points from the match with Middleton winning just two.

It was a busy seven days for the Bognor Regis-based side, with two more matches played this week.

Saturday saw them edge out Petworth in a tight affair at the Sports Ground. After splitting the four legs two apiece, Middleton's greater cumulative total of 70 to the visitors' 65 saw them seal the win.

A busy week was rounded off on Tuesday with a trip to Littlehampton to take on Norfolk B - a match which was lost 88 to 69.

THose results leave Middleton third in the league but having played more matches than any of their rivals.

Chichester B return to action

on Tuesday with a home match against Goring Manor (2pm) while Middleton host Aldingbourne on Wednesday.

In Division One, Bognor A are still looking for their first win of the season after being beaten 85-70 at Worthing. THey return to action tomorrow (2pm) with a match against Tarring Priory A. At the same time, Chichester A will travel to Worthing.

In Division Two, Pagham will welcome Tarring Priory B on Wednesday (2pm) hoping to build on an extremely narrow victory over Maltravers last time out.

Meanwhile, Bognor B have a busy week, travelling to Storrington tomorrow (2pm) before hosting Witterings on Wednesday (2pm).

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain bowling club secured three wins a week which included victories over Witterings 100-74 at home and 80-69 at Emsworth.

Further good news for the club came in the form of a 1413 win away by their Triples team over Worthing Pavilion in the 2017 SCBA Division 4 triples preliminary round.

BOGNOR'S cricketers experienced a mixed weekend as the firsts fell to defeat on the road but the seconds secured a second win of the season.

Max Ashmore's side travelled to Mayfield looking to build on the previous week's win over Portslade at the Regis Oval.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Bognor struggled with Joe Ashmore (35), Marques Clarke (29) and Elliott Clarke (29) the only players to score more than 10 in the total of 142.

In reply, Sam Adams (2 for 19) and Josh Sargaent (1 for 22) bowled well to restrict the home side to 27 for 3.

But a half century from wicket-keeper Josh Martin guided Mayfield to the total with more than ten overs to spare.

Meanwhile, Ollie Adams' superb 96 guided Bognor seconds to a four wicket win over Portslade seconds at Regis Oval. Earlier, Taylor Jaycocks (4 for 7) and Andrew McGregor (3 for 13) restricted the visitors to 167 all out.

Tomorrow, the firsts host Eastbourne while the seconds travel to West Chiltington and THakeham seconds (12.30pm).

Sussex starlet stalls Middleton SUSSEX starlet Will Beer crafted a composed century to halt Middleton's march in the Sussex Premier League.

THe Bognor Regis-based side looked well on track to winning their third game of the season at in-form Horsham after posting 288 for 9 in their 50 overs.

But Beer's sublime unbeaten 142 from 152 balls guided the Cricketfield Road side to a seven wicket victory with six balls to spare.

Middleton skipper Sean Heather had helped put his side in a good position after they were

put in to bat.

THe captain top-scored with 88 from 111 balls acting as an anchor as Ben Hansford (53) and Ben Ferbrache (41) made meaningful contributions to the final total.

Horsham did look in trouble at 28 for 2 and 63 for 3 after the removal of former Sussex man Michael THornley.

But then Beer went to work and combined with Nick Oxley (78*) put on 226 for the fourth wicket to guide the home side to victory.

Middleton return to action tomorrow,

Elsewhere, Middleton seconds will be looking to build on a convincing seven-wicket win against Bexhill seconds last weekend with a trip to Broadwater tomorrow.

Will Searle took 5 for 27 before Brandon Hanley hit an unbeaten 111 as Middleton reached the total with 18 overs to spare.

Division THree side Chichester Priory Park will be looking to bounce back after suffering a narrow three wicket loss to Eastbourne.

Mike Smith and Will Futcher (both 24) topscored for Chi as they posted a below-par 159 all out at Saffrons.

Chi return to Goodwood tomorrow hosting Bexhill seconds (12.30pm) while their second team travel to Crawley.

Jez Goode (86*) and Chris Hardy (45) put on 116 for the fourth wicket during last weekend's run chase at Broadwater but it was not enough to pass the home side's total of 232, with Chi falling 13 runs short.

In the West Sussex Invitation Cricket League Division 9, Priory Park Fourths edged out Middleton CC Academy by 32 runs.

Batting first, Chi reached 182 for 8 in their 40 overs, with Glen Stanford (72) and Mark Chapple (54) leading the way. Middleton's Cameron King took 4 for 20.

Despite Charlie McGuiniss scoring 56, the visitors came up short in the run chase.

De La Fuente's ton in vain as Pagham lose PAGHAM CC have made a strong start to reclaiming their position in Division Two of the Sussex Cricket Premier League, despite falling to their first defeat of the year last weekend.

Stuart Hanks' side won their first three matches in Division THree after being relegated last term.

But that unbeaten streak was brought to a halt on Saturday when they fell short of Crawley Eagles' total of 200.

After Crawley won the toss, they began accumulating a steady total, with Imran Suddahazai (53 leading the way.

Pagham's bowlers, led by Joe De La Fuente (4 for 41) and Ollie Pearce (2 for 29), reduced the visitors to 63 for 4.

But a quick-fire 75 from just 52 balls from Usman Bashir took Crawley's score to the 200

mark.

In response, Pagham struggled to build any momentum.

Despite a century from De La Fuente (107), no other player scored more than 18 as the Nyetimber Lane side lost their last five wickets for no runs.

THey were eventually skittled out for 181, 19 runs short of the total.

THat defeat leaves Pagham second, 16 points behind the Eagles.

Next up is a trip to bottom-side Burgess Hill, who are without a win so far this season.

Pagham Seconds will be hoping to follow up a fine 87-run win away at Worthing Seconds at home to Goring Seconds tomorrow. Ian Dyer (71) top-scored while THomas Kent (3 for 36) and David Leader (3 for 25) bowled well.

Rocks hunt for new boss begins as Pearce and Charman commit THE ROCKS' hunt for a new boss is underway - with a replacement possibly in place next week.

It's been a busy time for all concerned at Nyewood Lane since the club sealed promotion back to National League South a month ago.

Off the field, the club has been carrying out a range of improvements to the ground affectionately known as the Nye Camp.

But it's on the pitch where much of the focus is, with the club looking to assemble a squad and a manager to compete at a higher level.

THe Rocks have been boosted in recent days as forward Ollie Pearce and defender Gary Charman signed for the club for another year.

Talks have also been ongoing with Sami ElAbd who, according to officials, has indicated he is willing to stay at Nyewood.

Jack Pearce, the club's general manager, also revealed to the Post that discussions for a new manager ro replace Jamie Howell, pictured left, will start next week - well in time for the first pre-season friendly at Worthing on July 7.

He said: "We have got people we want to speak to, we also have people who have indicated they want to talk to us.

"We will talk to six to eight people in total and see where who our preferred option is. THen we'll talk to them and see what they say."

Having had only two managers in the last decade, Pearce is not used to looking for a new

figurehead in the dugout.

But he is clear on what characteristics they should have.

Pearce said: "THe most important thing is for the manager to have the desire to want to do the job under the conditions that we are working with.

"We also have a model with how the game is played which is very important to us.

"THen we have the finance with what we can spend on the squad and also the wages that we have to offer.

"All those various components will add up and take a few people out of the equation."

Pearce would not be drawn on speculation of the names that have been linked to the job. But he knows the type of person he is looking for.

He added: "THey must have the desire to work their socks off. To get success with the resources we have and geographical location that we are in, they will have to be committed.

"THey will also have to work harder than the people with bigger budgets have to work so that we can identify those gems of players that have great potential who can develop over time."

It's not the most wide-open set of criteria but Pearce knows he's looking for a manager who could be around for a while.

He said: "I accept we may not be the greatest club to manage on paper but once managers get inside not many want to leave."

Bognor's pre-season confirmed THE ROCKS' preparations for the new season have been confirmed.

Bognor supporters will already have the date with newly-promoted Portsmouth on July 19 at Nyewood in their diary (7pm).

With ex-manager Paul Cook's side sealing a dramatic title win on the last day of the season to clinch the League Two crown and the Rocks coming off their own promotion, a decent attendance is expected to see the Bognor boys match up to the professional counterparts from down the road.

THe only other match at home wll be a week later against League Two side Crawley Town on July 26 (7.45pm).

With former Leeds and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell at the helm, the attraction of seeing a former Champions League winner at Nyewood will no doubt attract a decent crowd.

THe rest of the games are on the road, starting with familiar foes Worthing on July 7 at Woodside Road (7.45pm).

THat's followed by a trip to SCFL Premier side Chichester City on July 14 (7.30pm) to play a side pushing for promotion to the Ryman South.

Preparations are rounded off with a visit to Gosport Borough on July 28 (7.45pm).

WELL what a few weeks it has been.

Barely a month has gone since that very memorable day in front of more than 3,000 fans at Nyewood Lane.

After missing out on two attempts to win the Ryman Premier, Bognor sealed promotion via the play-offs with a 2-1 victory over those familiar faces from Dulwich Hamlet.

Fast-forward a month and so much has changed.

Some of those pictured above taking part in the celebrations after that famous play-off win have departed.

Most notable among those absent faces is manager Jamie Howell, who has taken up the reigns at Eastbourne Borough.

On the playing front, topscorer James Fraser has decided for personal reasons he cannot commit; the same is true of long-serving midfielder Darren Budd.

But it’s not all doom and gloom as others have signed up to playing their part to being part of a side that aims to establish the Rocks as a National League South side.

Ollie Pearce, Gary Charman, Doug Tuck and Jimmy Muitt have put pen to paper to stay at the club for another year.

Also among them is James Crane, the popular left back who has been with the club since 2008, coming to Nyewood just before Howell joined the coaching staff a year later.

As someone that combines playing football with a fulltime job teaching PE at a local school, James finds it harder than most to find time to recuperate after what has been a long season.

Here, he reveals his secrets to the Post: How important is a break after a season like that?

A break is what we need after the psychological impact of past few years, with missing out on promotion and the FA Trophy semi final defeat.

My main rest comes now, immediately after the end of

the season.

I have three to four weeks where I do nothing except get involved a bit more in the PE lessons that I'm teaching.

THen it comes to the middle of June and I start to think about cracking on.

THe plan is that two to three weeks before the start of preseason I like to get out and hit the training a bit harder so that I'm ready.

What are you most looking forward to in the pre-season?

We already have a few big games on the horizon with both Portsmouth and Crawley booked in to come to Nyewood.

It doesn't surprise me as we are an attractive club; we've been promoted, so bigger clubs will want to come and test us.

It's always good to go up against players who are fitter and technically better so it will be a good test in terms of fitness to see where we are at or if we need to work a bit harder on certain aspects.

Which game are you most looking forward to?

Pompey in particular is always a good gauge of fitness as they do keep the ball well and do work hard off the ball.

Obviously, you have one eye on the season but what person living in this area on the south coast would not look forward to a few thousand people coming down at Nyewood Lane and seeing their local team against league opposition.

Portsmouth and Crawley will be two big games and I'm looking forward to testing myself against them.

You'll have other things on your mind this summer as well won't you?

Yes, I'm getting married this summer so I will be away for a few weeks during pre-season.

I'll try not to let that affect me, though. While it's obviously a big day that I'm looking forward to, I can't wait to get going with the new season to see how we get on.
