Incredible Roman find in city BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A PRIVATE Roman bath house, belonging to the richest Romans in Chichester, has been unearthed in one of the city’s parks. It has been described as “a once in a life time opportunity for local archaeological volunteers to uncover a find like this". THe remains of three Roman buildings
were originally identified under Chichester’s Priory Park, using groundpenetrating radar equipment and a small dig was originally carried out to confirm this. James Kenny, Chichester District Council’s archaeologist, has been working solidly for over a week with the help of Chichester and District Archaeology Society to uncover the secrets beneath Priory Park.
He said: "For Chichester this is a really exciting find. It's very well preserved. "Most of the Roman archaeology in Chichester doesn't survive anywhere near as complete as this. It's a reasonably rare thing. "Chichester probably had several posh houses in the late Roman period but I bet not many survived anywhere near as good a condition as this.
