Hidden debts across the city

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across Chichester are falling into debt but are too ashamed to ask for help.

THat's what a financial advice charity

has told The Chichester Post as it warned money difficulties affected people across the city.

Now, the Chichester Debt Centre, run by the Christians Against Poverty group, is encouraging people to come forward and join the course it runs to support those who need help.

Peter Sutton, who runs the courses, said: "THe course is part of a national charity which has been going since the late 90s. It's been really successful.

"I just felt there was a real need for it.

People are in a situation where they are living in an area where there are quite wealthy people and they aren't wealthy.

"THey are too scared to come forward and are using their credit cards and getting into debt. THey are scared about coming forward and exposing themselves to friends and family. People feel ashamed.

Dentist surgery gets a top award A DENTIST surgery in Chichester has been recognised with an award.

Centre for Dentistry Chichester, the dentist in Sainsbury’s, has been recognised with an annual award based on patient service excellence ratings from healthcare search engine WhatClinic.com WhatClinic looked at 12 months of data from users of its site, in relation to Centre for Dentistry Chichester, including patient review scores, feedback data and clinic contact rates.

In 2016, more than 17 million people visited the comparison site to find and compare clinics.

Centre for Dentistry Chichester was one of only a small number of clinics on the site that met the standards needed to qualify for the award.

Tory election candidate is announced

Food and folk fest is big hit

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE of all ages spent the weekend enjoying good food and learning about folk traditions at a popular festival.

THe Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton, Chichester, has been running the Food and Folk Festival since 1989 and it has become increasingly popular.

As well as food such as meat, fish and cakes from local producers, there were traditional folk activities including morris and Maypole dancing. THe festival ran for three days over the bank holiday weekend.

Children also had the opportunity to take part in a parade and make headdresses to wear.

Jenny Rudd is marketing manager at

the museum.

She said: "Despite the bad weather it attracted over 4,000 visitors.

"THe focus is on local food and produce from the south east plus folk traditions in the area. People like it because they see different food types each time.

"We try and keep it fresh and bring on board different people and we responded to feedback.

"We also booked in more children's activities this year. We had a stage for the first time this year so there was some theatre on stage.

"It gave it more of a festival vibe. People could make a proper day of it.

"We get older and younger couples come along as well as families. It's definitely a place that's comfortable for single parents to come along to as well and we are dog-friendly."

MEMBERS of Chichester Conservative Association have selected Gillian Keegan as their parliamentary candidate for the General Election.

Gillian has lived in the Chichester district for the past seven years and is the district councillor for the Rogate Ward.

She will be standing for the Conservatives after current MP Andrew Tyrie announced last week that he is standing down from Parliament after 20 years in the role.

Gillian is the cabinet member for commercial services for Chichester District Council.

Chichester Conservative Association chairman Robert Searle said: "Chichester Conservative Association looks forward to providing Gillian with the fullest possible support in her campaign for the seat."

THe election takes place on THursday, June 8.

On Wednesday, the PM visited the Queen at Buckingham Palace to ask permission to dissolve Parliament and begin the campaign trail ahead of the election in five weeks time.

As reported, the Liberal Democrats in Chichester have already announced Jonathan Brown as their candidate.

THe Labour Party has announced its candidate is Mark Farwell, who ran for the seat in 2015. THe Green Party and UKIP are yet to announce their chosen candidates.

Post ` Dog walking help DOG walkers are being invited to find out more about the areas where they walk their pooches in West Sussex.

THe free events are being held on Tuesday, May 16, from 6.30pm, and Saturday, May 20, from 10am, at Brinsbury College, in North Heath, Pulborough. Tickets are required.

Time to cycle ADULTS keen to get back on their bikes can enjoy a series of guided rides, cycling confidence courses and bike maintenance courses.

THe courses are being run by Chichester District Council’s Like Your Bike programme.

THe annual programme of events is organised thanks to Air Quality grants from the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Adult novices can attend one free cycle training session. Courses take place on selected Saturday mornings and afternoons from May 6 until August 19.

Qualified trainers will help people gain confidence in a safe and relaxed environment.

Guided cycle rides, led by trained volunteers, run between April 29 and September 30.

THe rides start at 10am from Westgate Leisure Centre, Chichester and take around two and a half to three hours. THe rides are ideal for those who have not cycled for a while or who are new to the area.

For those who want to find out how to keep their bike safe and smooth-running, then foundation and intermediate bike maintenance courses will be taking place from May 13.

THe foundation course costs £5 while the intermediate courses will be £15.

Both courses are run by a qualified bike mechanic and take place at Westgate Leisure Centre.

Facebook helps to track flytipper

BY RUTH SCAMMELL A MAN who dumped bricks in Tangmere has been fined after he was traced thanks to pictures which were posted on social media.

Darren Perry, from Tangmere, was caught after a member of the public spotted the pictures on Chichester District Council’s Facebook page.

THey recognised the bricks as part of a brick arch which was demolished in January. THe number of the house was still attached.

THe council’s fly tipping enforcement officer was able to confirm the details using Google Street View.

THe homeowner confirmed that he had asked a relative to dispose of the bricks.

Mr Perry was interviewed under caution and admitted the offence. He agreed to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice of £250.

Louise Rudziak, head of environment and housing services at Chichester District Council, saidL “In the last three years, the council has spent more than £142,000 clearing away illegally dumped waste.

“What some people may not realise is that everyone, including both householders and businesses, is responsible for making sure waste is disposed of safely and legally.

“If you have not taken all reasonable measures to ensure your waste is being disposed of legally and you give your waste to someone who is not authorised

to take it or your waste is fly-tipped, you could be prosecuted or liable to pay a fixed penalty notice as well as the fly tipper.

“We didn’t think we would be able to find who was responsible for this particular incident, but because the number was still attached to the bricks we decided it was worth posting on our social media pages.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped by sharing these posts and providing valuable information.

“We would like to advise all householders and businesses to check that their waste is disposed of properly.

"If it is disposed of by a friend or relative, check that it is actually taken to the local household amenity site or if paying an individual or a company, that they are registered with the Environment Agency to remove waste.”

If a householder or business is having waste removed, the council recommends noting down the name of the waste carrier plus their address; checking on the Environment Agency website that they are registered to carry waste and on the day of removal, noting who collects the waste, a vehicle description and registration plus what material is being taken away.

THis is all information that will be useful if the material is found dumped at a later date.

Teaming up to create an array of tasty dishes for food firm STUDENTS at Chichester College have teamed up to create a sensational array of images for a local food manufacturer.

THey have been working on a project for Midhurst-based firm Pan’Artisan, helping to showcase their products for a range of promotional material.

THe project saw catering and hospitality students cook and present the products, supplied by Pan’Artisan, ready for photography and graphics students.

THey were then tasked with finding the best way to produce professional images, from setting up lighting to

using editing software.

Dan Freaker, art and design lecturer at Chichester College, said: “It was a match made in heaven for us as it gave the students a unique opportunity to work together on a professional, working brief.

“Food photography is not easy, and it was challenging to produce the food on time and to learn how to present it stylistically for promotional materials.

“THey all rose to the challenge and we supplied more than 100 images in very different styles to Pan’Artisan, who are already using them.”

Milestone for yacht club as it marks its Golden Jubilee

Chichester Yacht Club in Birdham has reached a significant milestone as it turns 50 this year and members have been enjoying a weekend full of celebrations.

Over the weekend, members enjoyed a special meal, took part in a quiz and had a family fun day with a bouncy castle and a barbecue. THere was also a classic car rally.

THe club also held an open day on Sunday so that people interested in joining could come and have a look around.

Rear Commodore House Tony Mobbs organised the celebrations.

He said: "It was part of our Golden Jubilee celebratory weekend.

"It was to celebrate 50 years of a modern club being formed.

"It's quite a momentous occasion. In the present climate in terms of sailing clubs in general, to be able to survive as long as we have and to have not folded like some other clubs have done is quite an achievement in itself.

"We have diversified somewhat over the years.

"We are a members club but we now provide RYA training courses and that's helped to sustain the club going forward.

"In general the club has a really exciting buzz about it.

"We are an informal, relaxed, familyfriendly club.

"People like the relaxed, informal atmosphere."

THe club is open seven days a week and has become very popular over the last 50 years.

Mr Mobbs said the success of the weekend proved how popular the club actually is.

"THere were lots of kids running around and that's what the members like.

"We can offer this to all ages and all family members can join in.

"It has been a lot of hard work that has got us to this position.

"It does rely a lot on the members to give up their time to make the weekend a success."

Chichester Yacht Club was reformed back in 1967, although the very first club was created in 1936 by the Chichester Canal.

It closed down during the war years and was reformed in 1967.

THe club offers a range of dinghy and powerboat training courses as well as in-house youth and adult coaching for all levels. In particular, for those new to sailing the club offers a start to sail package including instruction and use of the club’s range of dinghies.

From Monday, June 5, to Friday June 16, during St Wilfrid’s Hospice Make A Will Fortnight, local people can have their will written, or amended, by a local solicitor without paying their fee.

THis fundraising initiative invites people to consider making a donation to the hospice rather than paying the solicitors who are kindly donating their time and services.

Several local solicitors are generously participating in the scheme to benefit the vital work of the hospice in the community.

Youngster's hard work in community pays off as he receives a top award A STUDENT from Chichester High School Sixth Form has been chosen to receive a GEM Award from freight and logistics firm South Link in recognition of the outstanding contribution he makes to the local community.

Joss Edwards spends much of his time dedicated to helping others at the school and in the local area.

He devotes his free time to volunteering for PASCO, a Chichester-based charity which supports children with disabilities and special educational needs, where he works as a personal assistant to youngsters with autism.

Additionally, as head boy, he runs the school council along with the head girl and is leading the council’s Mission 5K project by organising a number of fundraising events.

People urged to get help to manage their finances better

"THe beauty of the courses is that it's very informal and it's non-judgemental.

"We get people to look at their finances and bring them into us. We see how we can improve their money and manage it.

"People are in a state of denial. THe bills come through the door and they put them in a draw and don't open them.

"THey are frightened of the unknown."

Mr Sutton, who said some people have debts totalling around £5,000, added that many people have a lack of budgeting abilities and their overall spending each month outweighs the amount of money that they are bringing in.

CAP's centre in Chichester has around 30 clients who need help with money management or find themselves with debts which are starting to mount.

THe free course consists of three informal sessions. Each last two hours and enables participants to improve their ability to manage money, encourages them to take a fresh look at their finances and budget successfully.

THere is also a centre in Bognor Regis which is based in the Vineyard Church in Waterloo Square.

"It's good to be able to stand back and look at your finances and improve your financial management," he added.

"If it's left to become a problem it leads to family breakdowns and it becomes a domestic crisis. People can lose their homes.

"By encouraging them to look at everything they have got, it's a great weight off their mind and then they

know what they are dealing with.

"It's never as bad as they thought it might be.

"Many of the people who come in have a budget that shows that they are spending more than they are getting in.

We address that over the course.

"If they are seriously in debt then there are ways to help.

"Everything that we do is totally free. It is a charity so we do depend on donations but we don't ask for a penny from anybody that comes on the course.

"THe course has been quite successful in Bognor. Not so many people come on the course in Chichester. People are frightened.

"But what we have started to do is run some daytime courses so mums with children can come along when the children are at school.

Cash boost A COMMUNITY group has received funding thanks to the council.

Heartspace has received a grant from West Sussex County Council’s Members Big Society Fund for their work within the local community.

Katrina Wakefield, who founded the group last year, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this grant, as it means we can continue and also expand our work.

"Now we will be able to offer a greater range of creative activities, and create a website to publicise our work which should help us to reach more people in the area.”

Share your park memories ahead of centenary in 2018

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A PUBLIC history project is calling on Chichester residents and visitors to share their experiences and memories of one of the city’s historic parks ahead of its centenary.

Priory Park Memories is being led by Dr Ross J Wilson, a senior lecturer of the University of Chichester’s Department of History and Politics, and the Friends of Priory Park.

THe project intends to record and examine how people have used the area since it became a central part of Chichester life after the First World War. It is part of the Priory Park 100 centenary celebrations being held in 2018 to mark the gift of the park to the city by the seventh Duke of Richmond and Gordon in September, 1918.

Dr Ross Wilson said: “As the city’s first war memorial, it has reflected that same sense of duty throughout the 20th century as it has been used as a place of remembrance, leisure, relaxation, exercise and entertainment.

“THrough recording public recollections of the park, we will be able to build a lasting testimony to how this place has been used in the past and the present.

"We will also work to develop a booklet and online resource to ensure that this history can be maintained for the future.”

Residents and visitors are being asked to submit their memories and photos of the park to a new website created for the project.

Priory Park 100 is a collaboration between the Friends of Priory Park and the Priory Park Festival to highlight the park's contribution to the quality of life in Chichester, honour its history, and reaffirm its role as a memorial to the fallen in the First World War. A full programme of 2018 festival events will be announced later.

Dr Wilson added: “THe project team will also hold interviews through the summer and those interested in attending or being notified of the dates can register for updates on the website.”

Priory Park lies within the walls in the north-east quadrant of the city.

THe area that is today the park was formerly the bailey of Chichester Castle, built shortly after the Norman conquest in the 11th century.

Since 1918, it has been administered, first, by the City Corporation and, since 1974, by Chichester District Council.

For many years the park was home to the Real Ale and Jazz Festival. More recently, it played host to open-air screenings, and in July, the first Priory Park Festival of music, food and the arts.

Students step back in time A GROUP of Chichester College students have been helping staff and volunteers at Fishbourne Roman Palace step back in time.

THe 12 students, who are on the verge of completing their second year of a BTEC diploma in production arts hair and make-up, spent the Easter break at the site recreating styles that would have been seen during the palace’s heyday.

It’s the culmination of a year-long project, which started back in September, and forms part of their final assessment.

Student Katie Sheat said: “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been a really interesting experience to learn about how the Romans used make-up, their style and then trying to recreate that ourselves.

“Everyone at the palace has been really helpful and welcoming to us, giving us advice and talking to us about life in Roman times, which has really helped.”

Horticulture students and staff at Brinsbury, the countryside campus of Chichester College, have been working hard over the past few months to plan and prepare the meadow, which is more than 800 square metres.

THe first seeds will be sowed at the annual fayre, which takes place on Sunday, May 21, at the campus – based near Pulborough.

Sue Reed, horticulture lecturer at the college, said: “More than 95 per cent of the UK’s meadows have disappeared over the last 50 years, putting our native flora and fauna at risk.

“Wildflower meadows are not only essential for attracting pollinating bees and butterflies but also many other insects, which in turn provide a food source for birds and rare bats.

“THe students have worked hard to strip the turf, which has been stacked and topped with chalk to create a butterfly

“Horticulture students, helped by the children from First Steps Nursery at Brinsbury, will be planting the bank with a selection of wildflowers designed to attract butterflies.”

THe wildflower seeds have been donated by Fargro Ltd, a leading distributor and supplier of exclusive horticultural products in the south east.

It’ is hoped that more than 1,000 visitors to the Brinsbury Show – from the youngest to the oldest - will take part in sowing the meadow on the day.

Entry to the show costs £5 per person, free for under 16s.

Sue added: “Just head to the meadow when you arrive. Our students will be providing the seeds and guiding you to the sowing area.”

For those with an artistic nature, there will also be an opportunity to draw your vision of the meadow in full flower.

Runners urged to help refugees A CHARITY is encouraging runners to run the Chichester Half Marathon this year in support of refugee children.

THe sixth annual Children on the Edge Chichester Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, October 8.

Organised by Chichester-based charity, Children on the Edge, the race has grown in popularity every year and now attracts around 1,000 runners.

Often referred to as the ‘Chi half’, the event now offers three popular races; the Half Marathon, the Ten Miler and the Team Relay, all of which go through the city centre and over the beautiful South Downs.

THis year, Children on the Edge want to raise £40,000 to support their work with refugee children.

To meet their ambitious target, the charity is calling for 1,200 runners to take part and 100 fundraisers to commit to raise £100 each as part of their ‘Run for Refugees’ Team.

Children on the Edge executive director Ben Wilkes said: “THe local support for this event is incredible, including from many Chichesterbased businesses, and we’re so grateful to our runners who return

year on year. We want a record number of people to take part in 2017 to help us raise £40,000 for our work with vulnerable children abroad.

"With three distances on offer, we hope that even more people will be able to join us."

Money raised through fundraising and in people taking part in the races supports Children on the Edge projects around the world, including in Lebanon; where they run four tent schools for Syrian refugee children.

THese schools are located in the Bekaa Valley, in small refugee camps that are not serviced by the larger aid agencies.

THe schools employ teachers trained from within the refugee community itself and offer high-quality education in a safe place for nearly 500 children who have fled war and violence.

Costing just £1 per day, they also allow the children a chance to play and just be children again.

Individual fundraisers who raise the target of £100, can cover the costs of sending 100 Syrian refugee children to school for a day in Lebanon.

Music delight for Mod event EARLY visitors to Bognorphenia enjoyed a preview of a gig which will have 40,000 music fans dancing this summer.

Mod band The Aim members Grant Judges and Jamie Tongue performed an acoustic selection of the playlist from their set when they support the legendary Madness.

Their appearance with the chart favourites will take place in August at Detling Showground in Kent.

Grant said: “It's our biggest concert to date. We've played in front of 1,000-2,000 before but nothing like an audience of that size. It's going to be great. We can't wait – but it does not matter how many people are listening to us.

"We still put everything we've got into our performing. It's about getting our music out there.”

The songs the duo performed at Sunday's fifth staging of the free mod celebration were a mixture of new tracks from their latest album – Days Like These – such as Friday Night and Dream Dancing and their older numbers.

“It's our second album in the two years since we formed,” said Grant. “We take our inspiration from the likes of The Who, The Small Faces and Paul Weller.

They were making their debut at Bognor phenia and were impressed by the event's first staging in Hotham Park.

At the other end of the musical scale was the annual event's largest number of performers to date.

A 70-strong Rock Choir of mainly women

singers lifted spirits with an enthusiastic rendition of eight songs led by Sarah Willis. Their joyous versions of Living on a Prayer and Uptown Girl among others had the audience swaying and tapping their feet.

Singer Helen Sachania, 48, of Storrington, said: “Singing makes you feel good. You would not sing in public on your own. This gives you the camaraderie to get up there and sing.”

Also making his Bognorphenia debut was pop soul singer Terry Carvey.

A late replacement, he smoothly ran through a selection of his favourites.

“This seems a nice and friendly event,” he said. “It was a bit of a rush getting my songs together for today but I'm pleased to be here and signing in front of people.”

Other performers in a packed programme included Dawn Gracie, The Proper, Adrian Hunt and Richard Scarborough.

Bognorphenia founder Kez Bridger halted the entertainment at 5pm, an hour earlier than planned, because of the forecast heavy rain and 30mph winds.

But the afternoon stayed largely dry to allow the hundreds of visitors to look around the dozen stalls and handful of scooters as well as to enjoy the music.

The Dementia Support charity is staging at open house from 4pm to 6pm on May 16 at its premises in City Fields Way, Tangmere.

Promotion joy for the Rocks and their fans THOUSANDS of Rocks fans were celebrating long into the night after Bognor FC served up a promotion party to remember.

A record crowd of more than 3,000 supporters packed into Nyewood Lane on Monday to cheer the side on to success.

And it worked - with the Rocks scoring twice in the first half to clinch the win, the playoff final victory and promotion to the National League South for the first time since 2008.

When the final whistle came, fans of all ages were flying green and white flags high and proud as celebrations went on into the night.

Those at the club hailed the promotion as a "wonderful achievement",adding it could not have been done without the support from the fans and wider community.

Jack Pearce, the club's general manager, said it was one of the best days he has experienced at the club in the five decades he has been involved at Nyewood.

Pearce said: "Days like this make up for all the black days.

"I'm delighted for everyone that supports the club. I'm delighted for [manager] Jamie [Howell], Dabber [assistant manager Darin Kilpatrick] and the staff and the players."

It has been a remarkable league campaign for the Rocks, who defied the odds all season to lead the way in the Ryman Premier for most of the campaign.

But after failing to win either of their last two league games, Bognor found themselves in the end of season playoffs.

The first match took place at Nyewood on

Thursday against Wingate & Finchley.

After a tense 90 minutes the scores were locked at 1-1, until Ollie Pearce smashed home a strike to seal the victory.

That set-up a playoff final against Dulwich Hamlet, a side that has beaten the Rocks twice in the playoffs in the recent years.

The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes to allow a record crowd of 3,119 - the highest since the FA Cup match against Swansea City in 1984/5 - to squeeze into the ground.

But when the match got underway, Bognor had the strongest start, scoring two quick goals.

The nerves began to jitter late on when James Fraser missed a penalty and then Dulwich halved the deficit.

But after five agonising minutes, the referee blew his whistle, sparking a pitch invasion and the letting off of flares.

Lots of cheers and a few tears followed as the players and staff joined supporters and officials on the pitch to lift the silverware.

It was a day that those who call the Nye Camp their second home will not forget anytime soon.

Pearce said: "After having the disappointment of having two bites of the cherry and missing out on the title I'm really pleased to have made it. It shows you the ups and downs of football."

Manager Jamie Howell said he was "delighted".

He added: "The lads have been brilliant all season and the two games in the playoffs were really intense.

"Relief is the over-riding emotion. I think there was a lot of pent up frustration after the last two league games and we were trying to keep cool.

"To have finally clinched promotion is amazing. I know how much it means for the supporters who have been brilliant all year.

"It was a brilliant year for us, far better than anticipated and it's justice for all the hard work we have put into it."

Dance success MUSIC and movement was used by dancers at a Bognor Regis school to focus on the lives of children in a warzone.

The Regis School's Signature dance troupe used a dance, drama and music showcase to perform a stunning piece which explored children's rights and their experiences in Syria.

The moving and thought-provoking dance was choreographed by Year 12 student Ellie Lucas. She runs the weekly Signature Dance Club and works with the younger students to create wonderful dance work which always has a clear message.

The dancers performed the piece in character to have a strong impact on the audience at the event in the school.

Year 7 student Darci Scott, one of the dancers, said: "I really enjoyed performing. Ellie has such great choreography and the performing arts teachers are really supportive."

` Electrical recycling DOORSTEP recycling of small electrical items begins in the Bognor Regis area next week.

The joint scheme between Arun District Council and its refuse contractor, Biffa, allows items like shavers, chargers, hairdryers, mobile phones, DVD players and cameras to be put out by households for collection.

Residents whose rubbish is collected on Wednesdays will join the scheme on May 10. It will continue to expand to Thursday collections on May 25 and those on Friday on June 9.

An Arun spokesman said: "Small electrical items should be placed in open, standard-sized carrier bags next to your rubbish bin/sacks.

"Anything larger cannot be taken as it will not fit into the storage cages under our collection vehicles.

"But they can still be taken to your local household waste recycling centre."

The scheme started in the east of the district last month.

Year 13 level three performing arts BTEC students repeat their dark and spell-binding production of Macbeth from last November's Shakespeare schools' festival.

The rest of the evening included dance work from a range of year groups. Fantastic music included a rap performance of Handlebars, orginally by FloBots, by Walid Brahmi and the Year 10 band to provide a highlight of the occasion.

Other music pieces included impressive vocals from Year 11 student Jade Brighten with How Will I Know? and Little Lies, accompanied

by Year 11 musicians.

Year 12 crooner Charlie Mann sung My Way accompanied by Year 12 pianist Mathew Hickey and Hollie Mills, of Year 13, who ended the evening with a lively version of Don't Stop Me Now joined by the sixth form band.

Head of performing arts Jolie Lelliott said: "I was immensely proud of all the students."

Issy to help children in India learn for life f Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers make their donation

Ringers support stroke survivors CONCERTS by Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers have helped stroke survivors in the town.

The tuneful members of the group presented a £1,200 cheque to the Bognor Regis Stroke Support Group at the end of a fundraising year for the organisation.

The donation was received by support group secretary Valerie Evans, pictured above with the handbell ringers.

The group is going to use the money for a summer outing for members, a cruise on the Chichester Canal and a visit to the Bognor Regis pantomime in December.

Allsopp said: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to provide these funds to support the excellent work of this voluntary local organisation.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported us throughout 2016 and the members of the group for their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm which has enabled us to give 25 performances during the year at venues ranging from nursing homes to playing carols at Chichester Cathedral."

This year will see the handbell ringers raise funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance's round-the-clock lifesaving work.

YEAR 10 student Isabella Saunders has been awarded a scholarship to improve the lives of children in India.

Issy, of Felpham Community College, was among just 30 young people nationally to be given the award to help to build a school in the sub-continent this summer.

She was chosen for the Virgin Atlantic prize after she had convinced the judges at the WE charity she shared their vision to inspire people to work together to make change.

Issy attended a WE concert in London last term and it made her determined to play her part.

"The speakers at the concert were amazing and made me want to take part in something global.

"I had to create a video on what I had been involved with in relation to the WE movement. There are only 30 kids around the country who have been given the scholarship, so I feel really proud.

"I can't wait to get out to India and get involved with something which will be a tremendous benefit to a local community," she said.

The WE movement is organising a threeweek journey to west India in July for the young adults, with WE volunteers, to help to build a school in a developing area.

Felpham headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Issy has been involved with a number of charity events at the college and is an active member of our school leadership team."

Think pink, so says Jan! These Morrison's offers May-be hard to resist Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

I FINISHED last week's column exhorting you to try new wine ranges, so this week I concentrate on Morrison's and their current approach to wine retailing.

I begin with a Head Honcho Chardonnay from the sunny climes of Chile reduced from £6.50 to an enticing £4.75 and this brand is the property of Morrison's and the label stands out in comparison to the traditional packaging of most Chilean wines.

Head Honcho is designed to appeal to a younger consumer base with its quirky and striking label depicting flora and fauna native to Chile.

This wine has a good nose, is fresh on the palate and is a veritable melon and pineapple taste-feast and will certainly initiate discussion both in terms of the enigmatic and delightfully colourful label with its subtle intricacies and value for money at the offer price a visual and sensory experience to savour!

At a discounted price of £6.25, the 2016 Crux Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc caught my eye, a wine named after the Southern Cross constellation,

a defining feature of the Antipodean night sky. Fresh and clean on the palate, this wine exudes pear and lime flavours and would regally accompany salads or fish dishes and merits your attention!

Turning my attention to the very heart of France I espied a 2016 WM Morrison Sancerre from an area which has produced wine since

Roman times and whose mineralrich and chalky soil is so conducive to producing crisp and fruity wine which rarely disappoints. Not on offer, but reasonably priced at £12, this Sancerre is delicate with melon flavours to the fore and delightfully balanced acidity.

Extremely quaffable and affordable!

In terms of reds, an old favourite of mine loomed large in the form of

a Sorso 2013 Primitivo at a miserly outlay of £5.50 and mindful that sorso means a sip, I indulged in a few and noted tobacco and leather coupled with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruits and a spicy bouquet - this wine is tantalisingly good at this low price !

INGREDIENTS • 4 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • 1 cup milk, or as needed • 1 cup bread crumbs • 1 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • 1 cup olive oil • salt and ground black pepper to taste • 1 lemon, thinly sliced • 1 cup white wine • 1 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 ounce brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®), or to taste

ideally complement barbecue food and at £6.50 is a wine to consider!

My final selection was a 2014 Valpolicella Ripasso selected by Morrison's retailing at £7.50 and was decidedly rich and fruity with a hint of chocolate and should regale your taste buds and is veritably V for victory!

I will seek further bargain buys next week!

Chicken Francesa

Method 1. Remove the tenderloin from each chicken breast half.

Fillet each chicken breast half into 2 slices. Pound each piece of chicken, including the tenderloins, to 1/4-inch thickness. Place chicken in a bowl and pour in enough milk to completely cover chicken; soak for 30 minutes.

2. Mix bread crumbs, Pecorino Romano cheese, and parsley together in a bowl.

Remove chicken from milk and dredge through bread crumb mixture until each piece is evenly coated.

3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook chicken in the hot oil until lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly butter a baking dish.

INGREDIENTS

5. Transfer chicken to the prepared baking dish, reserving 1 tablespoon olive oil in the skillet. Sprinkle salt and pepper over chicken.

Place 1 slice lemon onto each chicken piece.

6. Pour wine into the skillet with reserved olive oil; bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Add chicken broth and lemon juice and boil until reduced by half, 5 to 10 minutes. Pour wine mixture over chicken and drizzle brandied orange liqueur over each.

• 6 egg yolks • 1 cup white sugar, divided • 1 pound mascarpone cheese • 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 3 tablespoons kirschwasser • 1 1/4 cups strong brewed coffee, cold • 25 ladyfingers • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

Tiramisu

Method 1. In a medium bowl beat together the egg yolks and 1/3 cup of sugar. Using a wooden spoon stir in mascarpone cheese, beaten egg whites, cream and kirschwasser; stir until smooth. Set aside.

2. Dissolve remaining 2/3 cup sugar in coffee.

Quickly, to avoid complete saturation, dip ends of ladyfingers in coffee mixture. Place

The great carbohydrate debate!

I READ an interesting article this week, and it was discussing the varied thoughts around eating carbohydrates. It is good, or is it not?

There seems to be a great deal of confusion around this topic. There’s a wide range of nutritional value in the carbohydrate kingdom with sweets, sugary drinks and processed carbs on one end of the spectrum and whole grains, fruits and vegetables on the other.

It’s a no-brainer to realise which ones would be best for you, but I do think it can be a little unclear at times.

Very few people can argue with the fact that vegetables and fruits are healthy carbohydrates, but whole grains are different.

They used to be considered a staple food. But with all the fad diets, are they still considered so?

I have a lot of clients that tell me they never eat carbohydrates to maintain their weight. If you are one of these people you could be doing yourself an injustice for your health. The fact is grains, like brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pasta, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat crackers, wild rice, millet (the list goes on), are loaded with essential nutrients. Including them in your diet delivers a wide array of health benefits and even long-term weight control.

Obviously, if you have coeliac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you’ll want to avoid the whole grains that contain gluten, but there are so many other healthy carbs that can be enjoyed instead.

People who eat whole grains daily burn about 100 more calories a day because of their increased metabolism and better digestion, with an increase in bowel movement. No more horrid constipation!

And eating whole grains at meals helps you stay full longer, which means you’re less likely to snack or binge on unhealthy foods.

Even though whole grains have a hearty dose of carbohydrates and have the potential to raise blood sugar, they also contain fibre, which can prevent blood sugar spikes.

Plus, the magnesium in carbs is an important cofactor for helping the body properly use glucose and make insulin. So for diabetics, they are an essential food.

Also, according to many studies done in both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women, they have shown significant reductions in breast cancer risk when eating fibre from whole grains every day. This has been tied to their rich source of phyto-oestrogenic lignans (plant oestrogens found in cereal fibre).

The lignans mimic oestrogen, causing your body to produce less on its own. Less oestrogen production means greater breast cancer prevention.

Fibre is also very helpful at binding to toxins to get them out of your body. Plus, the fibre in whole grains helps promote a healthy digestion by acting as pre-biotics, the food that nourishes your

good bacteria (pro-biotics). This is why diets rich in whole grains can help remedy diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive ailments.

Community News & Views SHOPPERS at a national retailer can help a Bognor Regisbased non-profit organisation.

Customers of Tesco can vote each time they shop in the next two months for Saltwater Creations to receive a grant of up to £4,000. Saltwater is among the three groups in this region of Tesco to have been shortlisted to receive money from its Bags of Help community funding scheme.

This sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awarded to community groups depending on the number of votes they have received from customers.

Jules Stallard, a director of Saltwater Creations Community Interest Company, said the cash would help its work to empower individuals, especially young people, to realise their ability.

"As a small local non-profit organisation, this funding will enable us to work with even more young people and local schools at no cost to them, at a time when budgets are restricted for schools.

"If we come first, we could have an impact on nearly 4,000 children," she said.

"We work with schools and other organisations to help people understand empowerment resulting in personal well-being.

"Delivered through captivating real-life storytelling workshops by people who have overcome adversity, the concepts become alive and real for the children to connect and remember, helping them to set their own goals and aspirations," she said.

Among Saltwater's presenters is Yapton resident Amanda Worne, pictured below. She was left paralysed after a cycling accident in August, 2015, and talks about her experiences since then overcoming her disabilities.

As well as real-life examples, like Amanda, of how to get involved in activities and volunteering, Saltwater provides tools and signposting to enable individuals to build confidence, especially when they face times of adversity.

The funding for Bags of Help comes from the 5p charge for single use carrier bags. The scheme has delivered more than £28.5m to 4,000-plus projects up and down the UK. Lindsey Compton, the head of community at Tesco, said: "We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for May and June.

"There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can't wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities."

HEALTHY eating will be on the menu at a new course in Bognor Regis this month.

Arun Wellbeing is starting the latest version of its successful Weight Information Sensible Eating course on May 16.

The free 12-week course will be held at Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street. It will take place from 6.45pm to 8.30pm on Tuesdays until August 1.

The WISE course is suitable for anyone who is looking to reduce their weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

OVING Scarecrow Day is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year on May 13.

The team behind Oving Scarecrows have always aimed to provide a great value family day out that is accessible and appealing to the whole community.

Now they hope this year's event will be their best yet.

Not only will there more scarecrows out than ever, there will also be many activities taking place all round the village as well as a tractor trailer ride to help people get there.

Alongside plenty of hands-on fun for all to enjoy there will be theatre groups performing, songs from Lesley’s Choirs, morris dancing, archery, heavy horses and the Owls About Town. For refreshments there will be teas, ice creams and Pimms served in the garden.

The judges this year will be actress Sue Jameson and TV chef Rosemary Moon.

Lucy Bailey, one of Oving Scarecrow's founding members, explained how the event has gained popularity over the years. She said: "Since

2008, the event has grown to become a red-letter day in our village calendar.

"Oving is now renowned for its annual Scarecrow Day and we attract an increasing number of visitors as our reputation for delivering a fantastic day spreads ever wider."

Another member, Anne Jenkins, is keen that as many people attend the day as possible. She said: "One of our key aims is to ensure no-one is excluded from participating.

"So, not only is everyone who organises and helps with the day a volunteer, but we also raise sponsorship, mostly from local businesses, so that we can provide most of our family activities free or at subsidised prices."

So why not come and join in the fun?

RECORD number of registrations have been made for a charity walk from Goodwood, pictured above.

Just under 1,000 people so far signed up for this year's Just Walk event next Saturday.

Walkers from across the country will meet at the racecourse to begin their walking challenge for charity across the stunning South Downs National Park.

They will be raising funds for the good cause of their choice as well as conquering their physical goals and sharing their emotional stories.

Mark Hannaford, the founder of Just Walk, said: "This has been a fantastic year for sign-ups and we still have a week left until the big day.

"We are absolutely delighted by the number of people who have registered for the challenge.

"We have 80-year-olds walking our big 60km route purely for the challenge, families walking with their children on our shorter routes for a fun day out as well as large groups participating and raising much-needed funds for their chosen charities."

Those who take part have five routes from which to choose - 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km and the big 60km. This means there is a walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Just Walk is in its 11th year and allows people to take part in one of the easiest forms of exercise.

Regular walking can greatly improve a person's health from reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes to improving their sleep. A range of fitness apps also makes it easy to monitor progress.

A RECORD number of young people around Bognor Regis and Chichester have signed up for a life-changing experience this summer.

The total of 270 members for the latest round of National Citizen Service courses is almost double the 155 who took part last year.

The participants will be going on four-week courses from July 3 and July 17.

Clair Goddard, who runs the scheme in the Post area, as the National Citizen Service wave co-ordinator, said: "The numbers are the highest we have known.

"It's exciting because it's going to change all these young people and get them involved in their communities.

"The NCS is getting more known. Young people are also realising they get two months off once they have finished their exams.

"By taking part in the citizen service, they are getting a signed certificate from the Prime Minister and a fantastic opportunity for their future."

The month they spent in the service could boost their confidence, helped good causes and gave them a good addition to their CV as they looked to start university or apprenticeships.

Clair was present at the Our Generation event for Bognorphenia in Hotham Park last Saturday to publicise the service.

She was joined by Tom Leggatt, 23, who took part in the first year of the scheme. He said: "I was a bit of a lad and a naughty boy when I was at school.

"I was training to be a mechanic when I heard about the NCS and went on the course. I'm now helping to run it in West Sussex. The money is not so good but I get real satisfaction in what I do talking to young people and helping them.

"I really enjoy my job in summer when I'm going on the courses with them. It's the best job in the summer.

"I get to do all that they do, have a laugh with the members and I get paid for it."

NCS in West Sussex is run by the county's intervention, prevention and early health service.

Those who take part in this year's programme will be split into three groups each in Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton.

They will spend their first week camping on a hill at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight team building and bonding with each other.

The second week will be spent on the University of Chichester's campus when a series of projects will find out the various skills which the participants possess.

The final fortnight will be devoted to community work. Each group will decide which projects to support and stage events to raise awareness. Previous years have seen mental health and domestic violence highlighted.

SUPPORTERS of Bognor Regis pier have staged their first public event of the year.

The Bognor Regis Pier Watch members took their gazebo to the seafront to tell the public about their aims and to seek to sign them up.

Jan Malpas, the group's chairman, said: "It was a bit cold so there was not a huge amount of people around.

"But we did sign up some new members and there was certainly interest from the public.

"We will be doing many pier watch gazebo days during the summer on Bognor Regis seafront and we look forward to talking to people about our vision to protect the Grade II listed building of Bognor Regis Pier and signing them up as life members for £1."

The group was formed three months ago by some former members of the pier trust after the pier's owner, John Ayers, declined to join the trust's bid for lottery funds for the pier.

Rich history of Protestant martyrs during the reign of Roman Catholic Queen Mary

By Lorna Still, volunteer at The Novium Museum MANY people will have heard of Latimer and Ridley, who were burnt at the stake in Oxford for their beliefs during the reign of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary, who was determined to stamp out the Reformation.

Fewer people are aware that Sussex had its share of Protestant martyrs and that two of them, THomas Iveson and Richard Hook, were executed in Chichester.

THomas Iveson was a carpenter from Godstone in Surrey. In October, 1554, he went to Brighton, then known as Brightelmston.

With him was a 25-year-old husbandman (small landowner) called John Launder, who was going on a business trip for his father.

While in Brighton, they heard of a brewer called Derek Carver who ‘did much favour the Gospel’. THey went to his house in Black Lion Street where he held meetings for worship using the English Bible authorised by Henry

VIII, and the English Prayer Book published in the reign of Edward VI. THe use of these books had been banned by Queen Mary, so Carver, Launder and Iveson were arrested by the sheriff with about nine other people and taken to Newgate Prison, London, where they remained for some time.

Carver spent his time in prison learning to read, so he could read the English Bible for himself.

In June, 1555, the Bishop of London, Bishop Bonner, was urged to examine the prisoners taken in Sussex.

At his trial in July, Iveson admitted that he had not been to Mass or gone to confession in the past seven years.

THis was enough to condemn him, as attendance was compulsory in Queen Mary’s time.

He denounced ‘Romish ceremony’ as

‘vain, superfluous, superstitious ok and naught’, and o H d n a n roundly declared Iveso Memorial to that ‘if there came an angel from heaven to teach me any other doctrine than that which I am now in, I would not believe him.’

Iveson was sent to Chichester, as this was the seat of the Diocese in which he was arrested, to be burnt in the Cathedral precincts on 24th July 1555, most probably in Vicar’s Close.

Carver was burnt in Lewes and Launder in Steyning.

Richard Hook, who was lame and came from Alfriston, was one of several Sussex men tried and condemned by George Daye, Bishop of Chichester.

Daye had been consecrated Bishop by THomas Cranmer in 1543.

He was a Catholic at heart and, although he had accepted Henry VIII as head of the Church of England, he was opposed to the spread of Protestantism under Edward VI. He expressed a readiness to suffer martyrdom for his Catholic faith and because he refused to replace altars with tables, he

was imprisoned in Fleet Prison, London, and deprived of his bishopric in 1551.

However, when Edward VI died, Mary re-established him immediately, and he preached at both Edward’s funeral and Mary’s coronation.

Richard Hook was tried on October 13th, 1555.

Although there is no account of his trial, his condemnation is strongly worded.

Hook is denounced as ‘an obstinate and confirmed heretic’, described as a ‘putrid member’ and given over to the secular arm ‘to be punished and broken’. He was also burnt in Vicar’s Close and his name appears in Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.

In 1948, a memorial to Iveson and Hook was unveiled by THe Hon. L.W. Joynson-Hicks, MP for Chichester.

THis memorial is now placed above the front entrance to Providence Chapel in Chapel Street.

It reads as follows: FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH To the memory of THOMAS IVESON and RICHARD HOOK who were martyred at Chichester 1555 for their faith.

Middleton skipper Heather stars with PostSport the bat and ball to secure Bognor win MIDDLETON skipper Sean Heather produced a fine all-round display to propel his side to victory over Bognor in the first round of the Gray Nicolls T20 cup.

The 35-year-old all-rounder used his right arm medium pace to great effect to take four wickets and reduce Bognor to 131-8 in their allotted overs.

Then, opening the batting, Heather smashed a quick-fire half-century to guarantee his side reached the target with seven wickets left to take the spoils in the local derby.

It ensured Middleton picked up where they left off last season, a year which saw them promoted into the top flight of the Sussex League.

Bognor won the toss and hoped to make the most of home conditions at the Regis Oval.

They were boosted with four players making their competitive debuts, among them Marques Clarke from Barbados, who has joined as the club's overseas player for the year.

Bognor got off to a good start, with captain Max Ashmore hitting 45 from 39 balls.

He received good support from Joe Ashmore (24) who was going well until he was run out

by Matt Cooke.

But then Heather began to control things for Middleton and his spell of four wickets for just 24 runs in his allotted four overs meant that Bognor posted a tally of 131-8.

With the visitors needing just over six and a half runs an over, Heather was determined to give his side a good start.

He did so and more, carrying his bat through the innings to see his side home.

The former Sussex man scored 57 runs from 50 balls, which included two sixes.

But he did receive good support with Angus Robson (24 from 20 balls) and Will Burrows (33 from 30) adding contributions which saw Middleton reach the target with five balls to spare.

Middleton will hope to take that form into their first match in the Sussex Premier Division, taking on Bexhill at the Sports Ground.

Division Two Bognor will also be at home entertaining recently-relegated Billingshurst at The Regis Oval.

In Division Three, Chichester Priory Park play Roffey Seconds at Goodwood - their first competitive match at the ground - while Pagham travel to Brighton and Hove Seconds.

All games take place tomorrow from 12pm.

DARTS: Andy Stubbs of the Hunston Hares was the standout performer in week three of the Bognor Firday Summer Darts League - but his 25 dart points average was not enough to prevent his side from falling to defeat to Friary Z. Here are the full results from week three:

f Itchenor Sailing Club is ready for it's open day

BUDDING sailors wanting to catch a taste of the sea should head down to Chichester's Itchenor Sailing Club this weekend.

The Chichester Harbour-based club will open its doors to all on Sunday to deliver taster sessions as part of the annual initiative.

Those at the club say the free entry event is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the different sailing classes available, as well as discovering about training and the thrill of being on the water.

Charles Hyatt, Commodore at Itchenor Sailing Club, said: “We are excited to welcome visitors to our club again this year and give them the opportunity to discover their local sailing venue and meet other like-minded people."

The club’s expert sailors will be offering taster sessions in a variety of keelboats including Solent Sunbeams, National Swallows and X One Designs.

Visitors will also be able to go afloat in one of the many spectator boats and experience

the thrill of racing up-close.

Local Land Rover dealership Harwoods Group is sponsoring the event.

Alastair Hanna, of Harwoods, commented: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Itchenor Sailing Club during its racing season this year.

Ladies Singles winner Annette Iskett will meet club newcomer Heather Saharaee in her first round match.

Sylvia Ballinger was part of the winning duo in the Ladies Pairs and Mixed Pairs last season, as well as winning the Ladies Yardstick Trophy. This year, she faces Joan Spicer in the Yardstick first round.

In the Men's Yardstick last year's winner, Peter Armsby, plays club stalwart Jack Sutherland in his first round defence of the title. The Non Winners' Singles Competition for members who have yet to win a club trophy looks a most competitive contest this season, with several newcomers having entered the tournament.

All players will be looking forward to the Tournament Finals weekend in August.

Chi finish the season on a high with drubbing of the Stringers

CHICHESTER City rounded off an excellent season with a convincing 6-2 win over Hailsham Town.

The Lillywhites exceeded expectations in the SCFL Premier this year.

With just a month of the season to run, Miles Rutherford's side found themselves as a potential title challenger.

But a poor run-in, combined with eventual league champions Haywards Heath Town putting together a winning run, saw Chi stumble to a third place finish - 12 points off Heath but 12 points ahead of local rivals Pagham in fourth.

With the club not applying for promotion and a number of key players not available in that time, that dip in form was probably to be expected.

Chi completed the season on Saturday with a win at already relegated Hailsham Town.

Daniel Hegarty bagged a first half brace before Lorenzo Dolcetti, Omar Barry (2) and Kieran Hartley rounded off the scoring.

The focus now is on rebuilding for next season with those at Oaklands Park hopeful the side can build on their success next term.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea said he is "absolutely delighted" after the Lions lifted a cup for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Nyetimber Lane side went into the Peter Bentley Cup final against SCFL Premier winners Haywards Heath Town as firm underdogs.

But ten-man Pagham produced an inspired battling display to win 1-0, thanks to a Callum Overton strike.

The win was extra sweet as it meant manager Mark Bennett stepped down from the role on a high after 18 months at the helm.

Speaking to the Post after the match, Shea said: "I'm absolutely delighted for everyone at the club.

"It's very hard to win any kind of trophy and it's a great achievement."

Heath came into the match at The Beacon in Hassocks as firm favourites, having sealed the league title just two days previous.

But Pagham matched them in every area of the park, eventually taking the lead with

30 minutes to go.

Despite Daniel Swain being sent off, the Lions held on, sparking wild celebrations which went on into the night.

Shea said: "I think we were the better side and many of the neutrals said we deserved to win it.

"We took everything they threw at us.

"Bins [goalkeeper James Binfield] pulled off one great save but realistically the score could have been more.

"The last 20 minutes I was quite nervous and they did have six or seven corners on the trot but realistically we were the better side " He added: "All the players involved and supporters involved management team, all went back to the club and had a good time everyone really enjoyed it.

"We've been pushing for last two of three years and finally got something "I want to thank Mark [Bennett] for everything he has done at the club.

"He has worked extremely hard throughout the club and he goes out on a high."

FORMER Portsmouth FC star Steve Claridge made sure these stars of tomorrow did not forget their first piece of silverware - after handing them their medals in person.

Chichester City Youth under 12s have been in fine form all season, giving a number of sides at higher age levels a run for their money.

Those tests stood the side in good stead as they headed to the SCI Youth Football Festival last month.

Competing against under-12s sides from across the country, the Chi lads showed great spirit to win the contest.

Chris Bullen, the Chichester City Youth under-12s manager, said: "This is our first trophy of the season.

"We only conceded one goal over eight games which was a penalty which was quite something and scoring 24 in the process."

Bullen put the success down to his "very strong and talented" side playing at under-13s level for much of the season.

This includes being pitched in the highest division for under-13s sides in the area.

He said: It was a great test for us playing older teams and although we had mixed results all season the team got stronger as the season progressed.

"We finished joint sixth in the top league which is a great achievement, some of the size differences was very considerable.

"We play good passing football and had to use this as our strength."

Chi Ladies on verge of title win CHICHESTER City Ladies are standing on the edge of history - with the club just one win away from winning the FA Premier League Division One South West crown.

Liam Greenfield's side have been in imperious form throughout the season, winning 19 of their 20 league games so far.

The latest was a 13-0 win on the road at Exeter City on Saturday.

That meant that the Green Army went into the match against St Nicholas Ladies at Oaklands Park last night knowing that a win will seal the championship and the club's highest ever finish.

They will hope for a repeat of Saturday when Chi were in control from the off.

They established a lead after only five minutes when a sublime move saw captain Becky Barron slam home from just inside the box.

The lead was doubled by Chloe before 16-year-old Lou Lou Robson scored her first senior goal.

A fourth was added on the quarter hour when Cherelle Khassal caused havoc at the back for the red and whites and her low cross was diverted into her own net by the unlucky Kate Finch.

To their credit, Exeter heads didn’t drop despite the adversity and they kept Chichester at bay until just after the half hour when Charley Wilson-Blakely notched her first of

the match with a simple finish.

Moments later and Jess Lewry got in on the act to slide the ball home from another perfect set up from Dowdell.

Chichester were in full control and extremely content going into the second half.

It wasn’t until just after the hour mark when the visitors broke through again. Lucie Challen, who had only just come off the bench, floated a lovely ball into the danger area for Dowdell to make it six.

With Exeter under all sorts of pressure,

Next Challen got in on the act before WilsonBlakely netted her second of the game and then Dowdell scored the 11th goal.

In the dying minutes Wilson-Blakely grabbed her hat-trick before Ryan scored a spectacular free kick from 35 yards to complete the perfect day for Chichester City Ladies.

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell believes he couldn't have left the Rocks on a better day - after his side sealed promotion to National League South in dramatic circumstances.

After suffering the heartbreak of missing out on the league title on the last day of the season, Bognor were faced with the lottery of the playoffs.

But two 2-1 wins in the space of four days - the second one against Dulwich Hamlet in front of more than 3,000 fans - led to a promotion party of epic proportions at Nyewood Lane.

That mood was dampened a little a few days later when Howell revealed he was leaving the Rocks to join Eastbourne Borough.

But speaking exclusively to the Post, the man who has sat in the Bognor dugout since 2009 said he could not have left on a better note.

Howell said: "For me, it's not going to get a much better day than Monday.

"We played really well in front of a big crowd, full of lots of people in the crowd that I know and to get the win with the players that are there is just a really good ending.

"I thought it may be my last game and really wanted to savour it and I did.

"To see the happiness and the tears on people's faces was brilliant and well worthwhile. I can't thank the club, Dabber [assistant manager Dain Kilpatrick], the players and the fans enough."

Howell's news has overshadowed what

has been a momentous week for everyone involved in the club.

It started with a 2-1 win against Wingate on Thursday, where Ollie Pearce scored with the last kick of the match to take the Rocks through into the playoff final.

The opponents on Monday were Dulwich, a side that has beaten the Rocks twice in the playoffs in recent years.

But strikes from Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce gave the majority of the record Nyewood crowd of 3,119 plenty to shout about.

A missed penalty and then a Dulwich consolation late on led to a nervy finale.

But the Rocks held on to seal a remarkable promotion for a side that has punched about its weight all season.

For Howell, it is that memory that will stick with him as he takes up a full-time position along the coast.

He said: "I've been thinking a little bit about it throughout the season that it is time for a change.

"I love the football club and for 20 years it has been a massive part of my life.

"I will miss chairman Jack [Pearce], Dabber and the players and the staff but sometimes good things have to come to an end.

"I didn't want to get to the stage where people want you to go and thought it was the time to go. We got promoted and hopefully I can leave on a high."

No rush to appoint Rocks' boss LIFE at Nyewood Lane is rarely quiet.

Just a few hours after sealing promotion to National League South, Bognor fans were rocked by the news that manager Jamie Howell was moving on.

The former Arsenal man has called Nyewood home for close to 20 years, first as a player, then from the dugout. But a move to fellow National League South side Eastbourne Borough was too good for Howell to turn down, particularly given the limited finances at Bognor.

It means that the Rocks will be looking for a new manager for the first time since 2009, when Howell was appointed alongside Darin 'Dabber' Kilpatrick.

The good news for the Nye Camp faithful is that Dabber has already said he is not going anywhere.

The search is now on for the board to find a successor to ensure the club can push on at a level of football it has not competed at for close to a decade.

With finances limited, an emphasis on youth and a strong desire for the club in to play a certain type of football, options will be limited.

But Bognor fans can rest easy knowing that the board will not rush in to an appointment until they know they have it right.

I AM writing this on the same evening we won the 2016/17 Ryman Premier League PlayOff Final at Nyewood Lane.

The realisation really hasn’t sunk in yet. I really can’t believe it.

What a season by the players and coaching staff. Bognor are a true team and I am so proud to be a part of it.

This is now my 20th year supporting the men in green and white and they really did the town, area and county proud. Buzzing doesn’t really describe it.

But of course in true Rocks fashion we had to wait for the celebrations and do it the hard way.

Speaking to Dabba after the 1-1 draw with Met Police it was clear his frustration showed and we needed to up our game against Wingate & Finchley in the next match.

Everyone was asking whether we were going to lose at the last hurdle again but despite the poor form, we managed a 2-1 win.

Ollie Pearce netted both goals. He left it right until the end for the winner, smashing home deep into stoppage time. Such drama. Ollie really stepped up here when the team needed him to.

It was Dulwich Hamlet that also made it to the playoff final as they managed to overcome Enfield Town at their place with a resounding 4-2 win.

I think it was fair to say that both teams in the final deserved to be there. Bognor, having topped the league for much of the season, and Dulwich for being in such great form towards the end to finish third in the league.

I got to Nyewood Lane at 1.30pm and it was already heaving with fans.

The Hamlet coaches had already arrived and the main stand was filling up.

The place was packed and a record crowd of 3,119 (the highest since 1984/5 against Swansea City in the FA Cup) enjoyed the match. I have to say I wasn’t looking forward to this, having previous experiences in the play-offs

end badly.

But the players really embraced the occasion. I was surprised when we went ahead with Jimmy Muitt on 21 minutes.

It got better when Ollie was given a gift of a back-pass by a Dulwich defender to slot it beyond their goalkeeper to send Nyewood Lane into a frenzy.

So it's 2-0 up at half time and I am still worried. I know how it has gone down in the past.

But the players continued to battle and on many occasions had to defend and literally put their bodies on the line.

We won a penalty when Harvey Whyte was tripped in the box in the second half.

James Fraser stepped up but the goalkeeper saved it!

It got worse as Dulwich pulled a goal back when Ibrahim Kargbo smashed it high into the net on the rise an unstoppable finish.

Dulwich continued to pressurise as the clock ticked slowly down to 90 minutes.

And with five minutes added on. Finally, the referee blew his whistle after 95 minutes.

A pitch invasion ensued and I was left speechless. Well not literally as I was cheering hard but my voice had already gone anyway!

It was truly a remarkable achievement. Jamie and Darin have instilled a belief and work ethic in this team that is unrivalled at any level of football.

So as the cheers of ‘WE ARE GOING UP!’ reverberated across Nyewood Lane, my thoughts went back to 2012 when we last went up through the play-offs (against Dulwich) and that was my Grandad’s last game before he had a stroke and passed away shortly after.

BRTFC is the team I grew up watching thanks to him. It truly is a great feeling.
