BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS for a snap General Election less than seven weeks ago have been welcomed by political leaders across Chichester.

Prime Minister Theresa May made the shock announcement on Tuesday and on Wednesday, MP's voted overwhelmingly

in favour of a General Election which will now take place in just seven weeks time on Thursday, June 8.

Now, political parties across the city and across the country will begin campaigning.

It comes less than a year after 52 per cent of people voted to leave the European Union.

Chichester's MP Andrew Tyrie gave his reaction to the announcement. He said: "

"The Prime Minister can now obtain her own mandate to take forward the crucial tasks of bringing stability to the economy and ensuring that its benefits reach as many people as possible in British society.

“The election is also an opportunity to further Britain’s national interest by strengthening the government’s negotiating position with its EU counterparts.

“The financial crash, the effects of the emergency measures to try to restore some stability to the economy, and the referendums of the last few years have all left Britain with new problems and, in some aspects, divided.

“Some of the claims and counter claims from politicians and others in the course of those campaigns devalued the currency of politics."

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE MEP for the south east was due to pay a visit to Chichester this week to discuss plans to scrap the A27 bypass.

Keith Taylor was due to visit the city yesterday, Thursday, to discuss sustainable mobility in the wake of the decision to scrap A27 expansion plans.

The Green Party politician was meeting with environmental campaigners, local politicians and was due to hold talks with representatives from Stagecoach buses.

Mr Taylor was a vocal supporter of the campaign against the A27 bypass and is keen to outline his sustainable mobility alternative - with integrated public infrastructure a means to alleviate traffic congestion.

Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport, announced last month that the planned scheme to redevelop the A27 had been cancelled.

It caused uproar in the community with many fearing the traffic congestion would now not be solved for many years to come.

But speaking ahead of the visit, Mr Taylor said: "Scrapping the bypass was a massive victory for Green campaigners and the local community who have long been united in opposition to the government’s short-sighted and unsustainable plans for a Chichester bypass.

"Never-ending and destructive road widening is simply not the answer to our transport woes.

"And I am delighted to have the opportunity to meet with campaigners, local politicians and Stagecoach to set out a green vision for a sustainable mobility solution to the traffic problems the people of Chichester are facing.

"The hundreds of millions of pounds originally committed to this project would be far better spent investing in public transport options, directed by local communities, to reduce traffic.

"I'm urging the government to ensure those funds are made available for sustainable options.

“Upgrading rail facilities, launching a comprehensive new bus system, investing in cycling infrastructure are just some of the ways to deliver sustainable small-scale solutions to Chichester’s congestion problems.

"A move towards sustainable mobility will also help address the urgent environmental need to reduce the traffic on our roads.”

Sarah Sharp, Chichester councillor and active cycling and pedestrian campaigner, was due to join Keith during the visit.

Speaking before the meeting, the Chichester South ward representative said: "The next few decades are crucial as we change away from using fossil fuels to alternative sources of energy, so encouraging more cars on to the roads now will only cause more problems.

"As we have seen recently, no-one actually wants new roads in their own neighbourhood. Here in Chichester, as in other towns across the country, we are also fighting the growing problem of air pollution."

Take care smoking at home FIREFIGHTERS are focusing on raising awareness of the dangers of smoking at home, urging anyone who smokes to take extra care to avoid a potential fire.

Fires started by smoking materials, such as cigarettes, lighters and e-cigarettes, are still the most dangerous nationally – causing more deaths than any other type of fire in the home.

Adrian Carter, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Intervention & Prevention Deputy Manager, said: “There are a number of very simple steps all smokers can take in order to protect their home and loved ones from a potential fire, from ensuring you never fall asleep with a cigarette in hand to double checking cigarettes

are always put out properly, even in an ashtray.

"However, we always advocate that the best form of smoking fire safety is cessation; if you have ever considered quitting or would like to stop smoking there is help available across the county.”

In 2016, firefighters attended 30 home fires caused by smoking materials in West Sussex, with the majority (43 per cent) of these starting in the living room or bedroom.

Falling asleep or becoming distracted was noted as a factor leading to the fire in 27 per cent of these incidents.

Pupils to take classroom out for a day

Easter fun for all at gardens

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN have been following the chocolate trail as they enjoyed their Easter break at West Dean Gardens.

The gardens hosted an Easter themed trail for children to take part in over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

They were tasked with following the Easter trail to receive a chocolate prize at the end.

There were also lots of arts and crafts activities and games for youngsters to take part in.

Emma O’Donnell is the events coordinator at West Dean Gardens.

She said the Easter event proved popular.

“The events like we have at Easter are a

great way for all the family to enjoy West Dean Gardens.

"Parents and grandparents can enjoy everything the gardens have to offer in spring and the Easter trail and craft activities mean the kids are entertained too so there’s something for everyone.

"The family events have been increasingly popular over the past couple of years and as a charity it’s great to see more visitors supporting what we do here."

West Dean Gardens houses an impressive collection of working Victorian Glasshouses, a 300 foot pergola, a spring garden and the occasional surreal fibreglass tree which is hugely popular with visitors all year round.

Old school could re-open for Chichester Free School pupils - see page 6

SCHOOLS across West Sussex are being encouraged to sign up for Outdoor Classroom Day. The global initiative encourages teachers to take lessons outside.

Outdoor Classroom Day will be celebrated across the world in as many as 52 countries on May 18, with the aim of getting over half a million children learning and playing outside of their classroom.

The initiative is being led globally

by Project Dirt with the help of the charity Learning through Landscapes. This year’s campaign aims to deliver the message to more schools, more children and more communities than ever before, with a record number of lessons being taught on the day in various countries around the world.

Juno Hollyhock, Chief Executive at Learning through Landscapes said: “The real aim of Outdoor Classroom Day is to inspire the world by letting children and teachers experience the true benefits of outdoor learning and play.

"No matter where you are in the world, learning outdoors will help children focus, it will boost their creativity and enhance their imagination and it’s also more fun.

"Whether its maths, music, science, art, drama or a language, being outdoors makes lessons truly memorable and adds to the enjoyment of childhood.”

Simon Dalwood, 36, was last seen at his mother's home in Cornflower Close at lunchtime on Friday, April 14.

He was found on Saturday, April 15 at 1.45pm.

Recognition for theatre CHICHESTER Festival Theatre has received an award.

The festival’s Learning, Education and Participation department (LEAP) has been awarded Good Practice Centre 2017/18 status for Arts Award.

The award is the nationwide qualification for young people, administered by Arts Council England and Trinity College London.

LEAP has taken a prominent lead in Arts Award accreditation opportunities for children and young people across the region since 2012.

Arts Award’s unique qualifications support young people to develop as artists and arts leaders, with particular focus on creativity, leadership and communication skills.

Open to everyone aged up to 25, Arts Award encourages young people from all backgrounds to work independently, preparing them for further education and employment.

Closed school may re-open for pupils

BY KEVIN SMITH kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk HUNDREDS of pupils from Chichester Free School could be taught at a former school in North Bersted.

The empty Bartons County Infant School could be re-opened for a year to provide extra accommodation for the pupils.

The free school's governors want to move into the site in Romney Broadwalk this September and use it for 390 primary school age pupils and 57 staff because their numbers are growing.

The Education and Skills Funding Agency has sought planning permission on their behalf from Arun District Council for the temporary building with seven classrooms it wants to use.

A statement by their planning agent, Zainab Arshad, says: "The existing vacant school will be used and an additional seven classroom temporary modular building will be erected in the grounds to the immediate southeast of the main building."

Bartons County Infant School was given planning approval in 1972.

It remained in use until July 2014 when its 180 pupils aged four and seven were transferred to a new primary school to the north.

Since then, the infant school site of just over half a hectare and its main building of one and two storeys with playing fields to the rear has been vacant.

Chichester Free School has been based

in temporary premises at Vinnetrow Business Park on the outskirts of the city since September 2013.

It has some 780 students and intends to move into permanent accommodation at the Carmelite Convent in Chichester.

But work on the building is not due to be completed until September 2018.

Ms Arshad states the free school has an urgent need for more space because of its booming popularity.

"During the interim period, and for the 2017/18 academic year in particular, the school have devised a strategy to split the primary school from the secondary school for the 2017/18 academic year.

"It is, therefore, vital to secure an alternative site to bridge the period until the permanent school is completed.

"To assist pupils and parents with the proposed two-site accommodation strategy, Chichester Free School are proposing to help transport many pupils who live in the Chichester area between Vinnetrow Business Park and the North Bersted site by shuttle bus.

"This will require the removal of four parking bays to the right of the main entrance to allow vehicle movement.

"It will further require the removal of five trees within the site," she says.

The proposed temporary modular building will be located to the east of the site on the playing field and set well back from surrounding properties.

It will be moved from the Vinnetrow Business Park site where it has provided five classrooms since last September.

New sections will be added to provide an extra two classrooms and an office.

Lawyers fight to keep service going to offer free legal advice LAWYERS who offer their time and advice for free to those who can't afford legal advice are fighting to save Sussex Legal Service (SLS) which is facing closure due to funding cuts.

SLS, which offers legal advice by staff from Irwin Mitchell and seven local law firms, is due to close in December.

Part of the service is a free Tuesday night Law Clinic, run by 22 lawyers who help more than 400 people a year.

Whilst the service is run by volunteers, it relies on donations, financial support and funding.

Now, Irwin Mitchell’s Chichester office has provided funding to help

save the service. With the help of the Chichester and District Law Society the team is also working with other law firms and organisations to ensure it continues.

Margaret Windram, Vice President of the Chichester and District Law Society, said: “We believe that we can use our legal expertise to ‘give something back’ to our local communities and Irwin Mitchell is determined to ensure that access to legal advice is truly available to all.

“It is crucial the Chichester and Sussex communities rally together to save the service.”

Court will remain open for now, government confirms

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER Combined Court will only close once alternative arrangements for provision have been made.

That's what the government told the Chichester Post, after it announced last year that Chichester's courts would close.

Last week, Chichester MP Andrew Tyrie wrote to the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice asking for answers.

The magistrates court closed in September.

But plans to shut the crown court were thrown into doubt when they were put on hold at the end of last year.

The Ministry of Justice said it would conduct a review into the planned closure.

But now, a HM Courts and Tribunal Service spokesperson has said: “Chichester Combined Court is not closed. The court is still able to hear cases and will only close once alternative provision arrangements have been established.

“Closing underused and dilapidated court buildings will allow us to reinvest in the justice system and make the best use of technology. This will improve access to justice and improve the experience for all court users, in particular vulnerable victims and witnesses."

The government has confirmed that

the court is currently available for listings but that when the crown court is not sitting it is locked to keep it secure.

They also added that maintaining underused and dilapidated court buildings costs the taxpayer £500m a

year but some courts sit for less than half the time available.

In response, Mr Tyrie said: "HM Courts and Tribunal Service points out that ‘some courts sit for less than half the time available’. This only serves to illustrate

once again why Chichester's Crown Court should remain open.

"In 2014-15, the court was in use 78 per cent of the time. I have yet to see a compelling, evidence-based case for this closure.”

Funding will help improve our schools WEST Sussex County Council has been allocated funding from the Department for Education.

The £43.7m cash boost will likely be used for a variety of reasons including improving schools and helping with pupil places.

A spokesperson said: “West Sussex has been allocated £43.7m for the financial year 2019/20.

"We will prioritise this funding to address basic need projects and these will be subject to public consultation.

“The Capital Maintenance Allocation for 2017/18 is provided by the Department for Education and should be directed at condition issues at schools in West Sussex that are not academies or voluntary aided (church) schools – they have separate condition allocations.

“The funding is a welcome help towards the ongoing needs of schools.

“We have reviewed condition needs across the county and met with headteacher representatives to prioritise the funding on themes such as urgent health and safety and projects that could otherwise lead to the closure of a school such as boilers and electrics.

"After these priorities we try to meet urgent condition needs on themes such as roofs, windows, doors etc. We have identified some 50 schools that will receive an allocation of funds in 2017/18."

Easter bunny brings chocolate and joy to care home as residents celebrate STAFF, residents and their guests at Marriott House and Lodge care home, in Chichester, celebrated Easter with lots of events and activities.

Staff at the home organised a range of activities including making cakes for an Easter competition.

They also wrote poetry and made decorations to put up.

Following this was an Easter egg hunt, an Easter bonnet competition, a quiz and a special tea party.

On Easter Sunday, there was a visit from the

Easter Bunny and Easter Chicken who delivered Easter Eggs and gifts to all residents.

General manager Theresa Shell said: “As always, we’ve all been looking forward to Easter.

"It’s such a nice time of the year – the residents love all the various activities and the Easter Bunny and Easter Chicken made everyone smile.

"It’s really been an eggs-cellent weekend of events."

The home regularly holds events and activities for its residents and surrounding neighbours too.

"This election offers an important opportunity to restore public trust in politics, and begin the process of healing some of those divisions.”

Tony Dignum, Chichester District Council's Conservative Group Leader said: "I welcome the election being proposed.

"The government needs a larger majority to strengthen its hand in negotiations with the EU. "It lacks a majority in the Lords and needs a fresh mandate to pass all the Brexit legislation. The election will hopefully provide that mandate."

James Hobson, secretary of the Chichester Labour Party, said: "Members of the Chichester Labour Party have a mixed response to the calling of a snap General Election.

"It will be a good opportunity to put the Conservative government’s appalling record in health, education and housing to public scrutiny.

"However, Mrs May’s motives for calling the election seem to be more based on self interest than the concerns of the British people - she seems to see it as a chance to disguise her incompetence and weak negotiating position over brexit.

"She cannot wait three years for an election because she knows that life in Britain will become increasingly difficult.

"The people of Sussex need a Labour government as much as any part of the country.

"Over the next seven weeks, Labour will be campaigning and putting forward a vision of a country that works for all of our people, not just privileged elite."

Democrat Party in Chichester, said: "I think Theresa May should have called an election last year instead of faffing around for 10 months, letting chaos and indecision cause significant damage to the economy and our global standing.

"So I welcome a general election in which people will have the opportunity to make clear their dissatisfaction with both of them.

"Finally, people will have the chance to be heard.

"And I will be proud to be standing up for the open, tolerant and united country that I think most of us genuinely want us to be."

In a statement outside Downing Street on Tuesday, Prime Minister Theresa May said: "At this moment of enormous national significance there should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division.

"The country is coming together, but Westminster is not.

"Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country.

"So we need a general election and we need one now, because we have at this moment a one-off chance to get this done while the European Union agrees its negotiating position and before the detailed talks begin.

"I have only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion.

Pupil places announced across county EVERY child across the county has been offered a school place this September, West Sussex County Council has confirmed.

The total number of applications received for reception class school places this September is 9,271.

A total of 89.4 per cent of applicants got their first choice school place with 6.5 per cent getting their second choice. Meanwhile, 208 children, that's 2.2 per cent, got their third choice.

A total of 176 pupils were allocated a place that wasn't one of their three preferences.

For those that were not offered their three preferences they have either been offered the catchment school or, if that is full, the nearest school to their address with a place available.

Fearless Hannah gets ready to climb Icelandic volcanoes

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A BRAVE mum-of-two is preparing to climb to the summit of three of Iceland's biggest volcanoes in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Hannah Ashdown, 36, is taking on the Icelandic Volcano Trek to raise money for the hospice after seeing first hand the good work that goes on there.

Hannah, from Birdham in Chichester, had a relative that was treated there and wanted to give back.

"My husband's grandma was in there for a little while. I saw first hand how personal it is and what they do," she said.

"All the volunteers will make homemade cakes and knit toys. All the people make it so homely and so lovely.

"We had the children with us when we were visiting and there were lots of toys that had been donated.

'They made every visit as lovely as possible. It's a real home from home which is so important when you are poorly. It was a really nice atmosphere."

Hannah, who has two young boys, will take on the challenge over a four day period in October.

One of the three volcanoes she will be visiting is EyjafjallajĂśkull, which erupted most recently and famously in 2010, disrupting air travel for several days across Europe.

Hannah said she heard about the trek

on the radio and decided it would be a good thing to get involved in.

"It's always been on my bucket list of places to go," she said.

"Iceland is changing all the time because of the tectonic plates which are constantly moving apart from each other.

I've also always wanted to see a glacier.

"And I wanted to inspire my sons with a sense of adventure. My parents are always going in a camper-van or climbing Ben Nevis or going from John O'Groats to Lands End. "That has inspired me to go out and experience things so I wanted to do the same for them."

At the end of the trek, her husband Nick will fly out to Iceland with her sons Charlie, five, and Jasper, two. They plan to go whale watching and try and see the Northern Lights together.

Now, Hannah is doing lots of training for the trek.

"It's nice having that incentive to get fit and start training. I have been doing lots of running and tread climbing in the gym. Having that goal is great because I know that I have to do it to make it.

"I'm not nervous about the volcanoes.

The thing that I am most nervous about is leaving the boys because I have never left them before.

"But knowing that they are coming to meet me at the end will help with that."

New giant sculpture in park has Alice's Mad Hatter down to a 'tea' VISITORS to a Bognor Regis park can step into a wonderland.

A new sculpture in Hotham Park brings to life the Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

THe oak and cedar work of art has been inspired by Lewis Carroll's famous book, Alice in Wonderland.

And the giant table is designed to be used for meals complete with jam hearts, sponge cakes and fruit slices cut into Cheshire Cat grins.

THe wooden masterpiece's unveiling on Good Friday was accompanied by some 13 children dressed as characters from the ever-popular tale to be the first to sit around it.

Among them was the Mad Hatter himself, Alfie Bridges-Iles, ten, from Chichester. He said: "THe table is very creative. It's really fantastic how it's been made. I've never seen anything like it before.

"THe park is a really beautiful place. I like looking out for the wildlife."

Five-year-old Kiyanna Johnson, of Bognor Regis, was dressed as a mixture of Alice and the Rabbit.

She said: "I like the table and how it's been made. I want to have a picnic on it.

"My favourite characters in the book are Alice and the White Rabbit."

THe sculpture was installed by Hotham Park Heritage Trust at a cost of several

thousand pounds from the profits of last year's country fair it staged in the park.

Young visitors to the fair chose Alice in Wonderland from three themes to inspire a series of sculptures of which the table is the first.

Arundel sculptor Simon Groves spent 15 days creating the 8ft X 2.5ft table with clocks in each corner, playing cards along the centre and eight mushroom seats. THe Mad Hatter is a separate figure at the head of the table. All the pieces weigh just over a ton combined.

Simon said: "It's nice to come along and see the sculpture as it should be.

Everything has been done with a chain saw, with sanding by my assistant, Harrison Doughty, to take the roughness off. I'm in my seventh year as a sculptor and this is probably one of the largest things I have made.

"THe heritage trust have been delightful to work with."

THe table was unveiled by Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon, after a countdown from three.

He said: "THis is a wonderful piece of sculpture. Hopefully, it's going to get lots and lots of use."

Hotham Park Heritage Trust events officer Debbie Northcott said: "THe table is lovely. We think it's splendid.

"We hope to install more sculptures

from the profits we make at this year's country fair on August 5 and 6."

Rosemary Warren, the chairman of the heritage trust, said: "THe table is a marvellous piece of art and it's a wonderful addition to the park.

"I am sure the table will be well used. I like to think the children will look upon it as one of their possessions and look after it accordingly.

"It will be followed by further additions from Alice in Wonderland as a result of the decision by the children."

Dozens of families followed the table's unveiling by enjoying their own tea parties in the Easter sunshine.

Lively entertainment at the ceremony was provided by an open-air performance by Knightstar Productions youth theatre group of songs from the Disney musical version of Alice in Wonderland.

THe table is the latest improvements to the park carried out by the trust in the past 20 years backed by funds raised from generous members of the public.

` Schools concert FOLK-STYLE songs are to be performed by 150 children from Bognor Regis area primary schools.

THey are joining together in a school links programme as part of this year's Southdowns Folk Festival. THe unique tie-up is being funded by just under £10,000 from the Awards for All national lottery funding scheme.

Emily Barden, the leader for singing and projects at West Sussex Music, said: "We are really excited about this new musical project and, quickly, five local primary schools signed up to take part.

"THey are St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Rose Green primary, South Bersted primary, Nyewood junior and Southway primary.

"THis project will result in a massed choir of approximately 150 children, aged 7-9, learning songs in a folk idiom, culminating in a spectacular joint performance at the schools' concert.

THis will have the theme of Songs from the Sea and take place at the Regis Centre on September 23 during the latest staging of the popular music and dance festival from September 21-24.

Festival chairman Roger Nash said: "THis is an excellent piece of news and will enable us to work with West Sussex Music, local primary schools and others in an exciting music programme over the next few months."

Hazel Latus, from the Regis Centre, said: "We have the experience and facilities to make sure the schools' concert is a big hit."

New projector puts focus on films at town centre cinema

FILM fans in Bognor Regis can enjoy big screen action better than ever.

A 4K projector has been installed at the town's Picturedrome to give audiences the best cinema experience the venue has offered.

THe £50,000 hi-tech item means Screen One boasts the latest Ultra HD technology to enable all the Hollywood blockbusters to be viewed in stunning detail and vibrant colours. Among the box office hits being lined up for later this year are the new Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Cinema operator Adam Cunard said the projector had replaced an outdated one which showed films in 2K definition.

"THe need for the renewal gave me the chance to update the way films are shown in the main screen," said Adam.

"THe new projector is in keeping with my aim to always offer the best cinemagoing experience for modern audiences in a traditional setting at the best value for money possible. THe increasing number of sell-out screenings we are hosting shows this combination is being appreciated by more and more customers."

THe latest investment at the historic picture house coincides with the tenth anniversary of Mr Cunard's family firm, the Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company, starting to run the venue.

He said: "I'm delighted we have celebrated ten years in charge of the cinema. Bognor Regis is my home town

and I'm as firmly committed to operating a top-class cinema now as I was when I prepared to take it over.

"A lot has happened in those ten years.

I have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on new seating, new screens and the new Screen THree. But the prices have stayed the same at £2.50 weekdays and £3.50 weekends. I intend to freeze them for as long as possible."

THe Victorian building has shown films since 1919 but a succession of operators in the 1980s and 90s had left it lacking in investment. THe historic structure was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and audiences began to desert the two screens it then contained.

Cineworld's opening in Chichester seemed to have dealt another blow to the Picturedrome's survival and the then owner of the attraction on the corner of Linden Road and Canada Grove, a private company based in Brighton, began plans to convert Screen One into flats.

Town councillors responded to public alarm at the loss of the Grade II-listed facility, which dates from 1886, and bought the building to begin essential external repairs. Mr Cunard had already taken over the cinema's operation and won the right to a new 25-year lease in 2012 to give his company the certainty to invest further.

"I'm always seeking to improve the cinema," he added. "I look forward to the 114-seat fourth screen being built by the town council so more films can be shown."

Tragic aircrew remembered PROUD Derek Pallett watched as a memorial to his cousin was unveiled in Felpham.

THe plaque pays tribute to the sacrifice paid by the four-strong aircrew of a Second World War bomber which crashed 75 years ago close to its site.

THe memorial is the only one which recalls the death of the airmen who were led by Mr Pallett's cousin and their pilot, newly married Sgt Stanley Culmer, 26.

Mr Pallett, 83, of Ormskirk in Lancashire, attended the ceremony last Saturday with his wife, Helen, pictured right. He had never known what happened to his cousin but he does remember being taken to a sweetshop by him to buy chocolate drops.

He said: "I feel very proud. It's been quite a while we have been looking for some memorial of my cousin. We looked at several different memorials.

"After looking around like we did, this is remarkable. We feel he has been officially remembered now.

"I am surprised and delighted at the turnout here today."

About 150 people attended the ceremony of some 20 minutes held in Sea Road.

Exactly 75 years earlier, and the No 144 Squadron twin-engined Handley-Page Hampden AT110 - based at RAF North Luffenham in Rutland - was on a Bomber Command mission to attack shipping and the docks at Le Havre in France.

No-one knows what went wrong an hour or so after the aircraft took off at night but a possible engine fire caused it to crash in flames just 100 yards short of the English

Channel. THe other crew members were Sgt RE Nation, 21; Sgt JA Hutchison, 25; and Sgt D Manning, 21.

An original memorial to the crash, installed about five years ago, still remains attached to the boundary wall of Butlin's.

But the replacement is larger and more prominent. It cost some £1,200 and its installation was led by the Bognor Regis branch of the Royal Air Forces Association.

Branch secretary David Hewings said: "David Pallett's recollections of the very brief time he had with his cousin have added an awful lot of meaning to this service. It is the first time we have had a known relative of the aircrew with us."

THe Rev John Challis read out the names of the aircrew before a short reading from Psalm 21. He said: "Seventy-five years ago, seems a very long time ago - and I was only a few months old when the Hampden bomber crashed near here but the courage and dedication to duty of these four young crewmen should still be remembered all these years later."

Cadets Gregory Cocks, 15, and Emily Sherrington, 12, of the 2351 Sqn Air Training Corps in Bognor Regis provided a guard of honour to the memorial and performed the unveiling of the Union flag.

Cdt Cocks said: "It's really important we remember the aircrew and preserve the heritage that we have. By remembering these specific people, we remember all those who have given their lives."

RAFA branch president Ron Flatt laid a red, white and blue wreath on the memorial during the service.

DOZENS of paintings will be on show at Pagham's parish church next weekend.

St THomas à Becket Church is staging its annual art exhibition during the bank holiday weekend.

THe event will be open from 10am5pm on the Saturday, midday-5pm on Sunday and 10am-5pm on the final day.

It will be the 19th festival to be staged to raise funds for the church.

Most of the works are traditionally entered by artists from the Bognor Regis area. Worshippers at the church are seeking to raise £250,000 for major repairs to its roof.

More than 700 young people in the areas have used ChatHealth in its initial 12 months.

A video has been launched by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust to mark ChatHealth's anniversary of providing confidential support and advice from school nurses via text messaging on 07840 635424. THe service runs 9am4.30pm weekdays and has received 2,830 messages so far.

A trust spokesman said: "It's an easy way for young people to confidentially ask for help. Confidential advice covers a wide range of issues such as bullying, eating, sleeping and drug and alcohol issues."

Rocks ready to go for push for promotion HUNDREDS of Rocks fans are set to cheer the club on to promotion this week - despite an Easter setback putting the party on hold for a few days.

Bognor Regis Town FC have been flying the flag for the town all season, sitting at the top of the Ryman Premier for most of the campaign.

But hopes of promotion to the Conference South - England's sixth tier of football - were dashed this weekend when the side were defeated to local rivals Havant & Waterlooville.

THat means with just one game to go in the season the Rocks are two points behind their bitter adversaries.

THey must win at Nyewood Lane tomorrow against Met Police and hope that Havant lose or draw at Kingstonian to win the league.

If that does not happen then the Rocks will go into the playoffs, with the semifinals taking place next THursday before the final on the May 1 bank holiday.

Bognor will play both matches at Nyewood Lane, if they make it that far.

Rocks fan Kelly Davis, 32, said: "I know we can do it - the players have done brilliantly all year and they just need one final push to get us promoted."

THe week started off so brightly with the Rocks beating Harlow 3-0 at Nyewood

Lane.

A crowd of close to 800 cheered Bognor on to the victory over very physical opponents.

But two goals from James Fraser and a Gary Charman header sent many of the Rocks fans home with a smile on their faces and hopes of a promotion party.

THen it was on to the heart-breaking match at Havant on Easter Monday watched by a record crowd of 3,455 fans.

Speaking after the match against Havant, Rocks manager Jamie Howell said: "I just want to thank the fans.

"I was so overwhelmed with the amount of support at Havant and was so disappointed for the players and supporters and everyone involved at how things turned out as I don't think it gave a true reflection of what we're about - that's what has really hurt me the most "We need to be a bit braver and perform better on the big day.

"We've done that in the past and we owe the fans that to make sure we are ready to win the next three games."

Rocks fans went into the Hawks fixture in good spirits after the win last Saturday.

Richard Essen, 48, from Bognor Regis, said: "THis game could have been written from the start of the season after Rutherford and Prior went to Havant."

After the Harlow game, Adrian Williams, 61, from Pagham, said: "I thought it was a shame we didn't score more goals. And it looks like we have not played as well as we have because two of the goals were penalties."

` New minibus for Pagham shoppers MEMBERS of a Pagham group will soon be able to travel in more comfort.

Pagham and District Residents' Association has ordered a new minibus.

THe vehicle - costing just under £39,000 - will have just 14 seats to allow more room for shopping trolleys and bags. It will also boast heating and air conditioning when it arrives in three months.

Iain Balch, the association's treasurer, said the minibus would ensure its invaluable shopping trips could continue.

"If we didn't do these journeys, a lot of the ladies we transport would not be able to get their shopping. THey would almost certainly have to end up going into care because they would not be able to look after themselves," he said.

THe association stages twice weekly trips to Morrisons in Bognor Regis town centre as well as fortnightly journeys to Lidl and Matalan out of town.

THere are also monthly outings to M&S Simply Food in Chichester as well as transport to its own coffee mornings and other social events.

"We transport about 2,500 people a year," said Mr Balch. "But we also let seven other local charitable organisations use our minibus as well.

"THey include Pagham Luncheon Club and Pagham Association for the Elderly and that adds another 1,500 passengers."

THe Peugeot vehicle has been partly funded by a £4,500 legacy from a grateful former passenger.

"She specifically left the money for a minibus because she enjoyed our trips so much - not just to go shopping but also because of the social aspect," Mr Balch added.

Cyclists face a delay for route CYCLISTS around Bognor Regis will have to use the busy A259 for longer.

Work on the combined cycling and walking path between Flansham and Climping of some 5km has been delayed.

It was due to have been underway by Easter.

But tenders are still being considered

by West Sussex County Council from potential contractors to push back any completion date by several months.

THe news has been greeted with dismay by Geoff Farrell, who chairs the West Sussex Cycle Forum.

He said: "THe cycle path is muchneeded by those who currently risk life and limb by cycling the route along

the A259.

"It will encourage more people to cycle between Bognor and Littlehampton and will be part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network 2 long distance route that runs between Dover and St Austell."

THe £1.4m scheme on the road's north side was due to have begun to take shape three months ago for a July finish. But the hold-up means the link will not be ready for this summer.

Mr Farrell was told by a highways and transport officer with West Sussex County Council: "We are still evaluating the tenders submitted by the contractor and my hope is that we can start in the summer."

KIND-HEARTED Lennie McCormack is running every day around Bognor Regis this month for charity.

Lennie, aged seven, is completing 2km a time to raise money to buy toys and equipment for the children and staff on the children's ward at St Richard's Hospital.

He wanted to give something back to Howard Ward after he had spent some time as a patient there.

He said: "It's fun, it's definitely fun and I really like going to new places to run different routes."

"Sometimes it's hard but it's still really fun because I love running" "When I was in hospital, I thought it would be a good idea to get the children some toys. THey have got lots but they still need more. THe nurses were really nice to me when I was poorly and the doctors were really funny."

Lennie has always had a love for running and enjoys attending the weekly junior parkrun which began in Bognor Regis earlier this year.

He recently completed his 11th of the weekly events and earned his half marathon certificate. THis activity inspired him to organise his daily runs to raise funds. A keen mathematician, he worked out he will have completed a total of 38.5 miles by the end of the month.

We spoke to Head Chef Paul Evans about the pub’s latest refurbishments SITUATED in the quaint village of Hunston between Chichester and Selsey The Spotted Cow is quickly making a name for itself for its delicious freshly prepared meals, fantastic selection of real ales and its welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere.

To further enhance the comfort and dining experience of customers the cosy village pub has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment, transforming its previously plain interior to a much more airy and inviting space. With wooden beams overhead and sturdy, rustic tables and chairs it really captures the feeling of a country pub while the high ceilings and ample windows give the restaurant a lovely open feeling.

Paul Evans, head chef and owner of The Spotted Cow was pleased with the results of the refurbishments. He said: “I wanted to create the perfect good old-fashioned country pub as well as an affordable dining experience.”

Paul took the Spotted Cow on in October last year alongside his son Ben. Paul is highly experienced and a well-known chef locally, and grasped the opportunity to showcase his own style of cuisine, having gained a fantastic reputation as a chef at other local gastropubs.

He has a passion for using locally sourced, fresh ingredients something he has always stuck to during his lengthy career as a chef, something you can see clearly influences his menu.

The menu is usually changed every fortnight to give customers something different to try, and also depends on what fresh, local produce is available at the time. Alongside this diners also have the

added options of the specials boards which are updated daily again according to what ingredients can be found locally.

Currently their menu offers a range of dishes from mouth-watering starters such as whitebait, rarebit and baked Camembert, succulent main dishes like their rib-eye steak and sweet chilli chicken salad, and then there are the ‘Cow Classics’ which are favourites such as burgers, ham egg and chips and their famous London Pride battered fish and chips.

Everything on their menu is lovingly homemade and Paul is more than happy to make adjustments to any dishes where possible; whether to make them vegetarian or gluten free or just to suit the diner! He is particularly proud of the fact that their beloved fish and chips can be made gluten free something that many other restaurants are unable to do.

Rather than patronising children by giving them a separate menu Paul believes they should be able to eat whatever their parents are having and offers reduced portion sizes of all the meals for only £6.95.

Sundays are always popular at the Spotted Cow with their choice of delicious roast meats with all the trimmings. Choose from beef, chicken, pork belly or even a vegetarian option.

The Spotted Cow is in the perfect location for keen walkers. Beside the Chichester Canal, the pub is the ideal spot for weary travellers to refuel after a bracing walk. My last white selection was that of a 2015 François Martenot Les Trois Pierres Chablis from the Beaune area in Burgundy.

At circa £7.45, this Chablis has good structure and liveliness on the palate and has a hint of spice about it – worth a punt at this price!

My price-buster red of the week is the Côtes Du Rhône Villages Signargues 2015 at an appetising three measly pounds and

has notes of forest fruits and sweet spices as well as good structure - a steal at this price!

THis wine is very drinkable, but would also complement a dish like Boeuf Bourguignon in the sauce, for Rhône wines fit the bill in this regard. For a mere £6 the 2015 Tesco finest Médoc is full bodied and exudes blackberries and blackcurrants with a savoury finish and is worth a go at this price. Similarly, the Tesco finest

Faugères 2015 is a most welcome addition to their range and , for a reduced price of £6, exudes black fruit and subtle spice and is a powerful red to match to beef dishes and game stews.

At £12 the 2011 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Château Du Val D'Or which, ideally could age a little longer, has a good nose and is dry and earthy with a complex concentration of intense blackberry and blackcurrant flavours culminating in notes

of cedar and spice and one to savour!

For just £15 the Tesco finest Margaux De Boyd 2012 Margaux would also benefit from further ageing, but remains a prestigious wine, big on flavour ,with black fruit, cherries, spice to the fore with a hint of liquorice and a wine to purchase for special occasions!

Spinach, pea and mozzarella open lasagne

difficulty: easy total time: 20 mins serves: 4

Method

INGREDIENTS For the pesto: • 100g peas, thawed if frozen • 50g blanched hazelnuts • 8tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 30g Parmesan, finely grated • 50g mint leaves a good squeeze of lemon juice For the ravioli • 450g spinach, washed • 8 fresh lasagne sheets • 150g peas, thawed if frozen • ½tbsp olive oil • 16 balls bocconcini (mini mozzarella) • double cream • Parmesan shavings or grated Parmesan, to serve

For the pesto: rinse the peas under cold water to defrost fully. In a food processor, blend the peas with the remaining ingredients and 2tbsp water until smooth. Season well, cover and set aside in the fridge until needed.

When you’re ready to serve, have 2 large pans of boiling salted water on the go. In one, put the spinach followed by the peas a few minutes later. Cook for 1 minute then drain them all into a bowl. In the other pan, cook the pasta sheets in batches (otherwise they stick together), for 3 minutes per batch, or until al dente, and remove with a slotted spoon on to an oiled tray.

To assemble, put a folded pasta sheet on each plate, some dollops of pesto, some spinach and peas, then top with another sheet, tear the mozzarella between them, and add the remaining veg, plus parmesan, a good drizzle of olive oil and freshly ground black pepper. Garnish with pea shoots and pine nuts.

Life's a beach for feeling fit and healthy I AM FEELING very lucky right now. Having spent Easter in Fuerteventura, I feel on top of the world.

THe sun changes everything. Your skin feels better, hair seems to naturally fold into tight little even beachy curls and your sleep becomes amazing. But is it just because you are away from the stresses of normal everyday life, or is there something in the air that makes you feel this way when you are in hotter climes?

We came here to surf. Being the windiest of the islands, it’s known for its kite surfing and water sports. But it has been relatively calm and not much wind during most of our stay.

So paddle boarding seems to have been our favourite sport of choice. THe beaches here are gorgeous, long white sandy beaches stretching for miles with clear blue water. Beaches generally are some of the greatest and most enjoyable natural features this earth has to offer. Many people pay exorbitant amounts of money to live near a beach.

When booking holidays, millions of us flock to sunny beach-side locations and, when retirement age, hits it’s off to warm coastal areas people go! So why exactly is this? Why do we, as humans, naturally gravitate towards the beach?

While we may not consciously be able to pinpoint the exact reasons why we feel so happy and relaxed after a day at the beach, it truly does have many positive effects on a person both physically and psychologically.

THe number one benefit for hitting the beach is stress relief. As soon as you arrive and step out into

just a few hours at the beach one of the greatest benefits a person will experience is a truly wonderful night’s sleep later. For insomnia sufferers looking for a natural remedy, the beach is a definite recommendation.

It’s because the beach helps relieve three key factors that inhibit sleep: high stress and anxiety levels, lack of physical fatigue, and hormonal imbalances. Not only do you feel immediately relaxed upon setting foot on the beach, but you get a great exercise even from just walking on the beach. Additionally, the sun and lowered stress levels immediately help regulate a person’s hormones – making it far easier later that night to get a peaceful and deep sleep.

Spending just ten minutes outside in the sun can actually allow a person to absorb their daily dose of vitamin D directly through their skin!

THe beach can also improve your ability to fight off infections. You may have experienced it previously – that painful sting when an open wound is exposed to salt water. Fortunately, that pain is a sign that your wound is actually being cleansed by the water.

Salt water has unique antibacterial and anti-fungal properties making it excellent for external infections.

Exercise is key to our everyday lives. So, even simply walking on sand is actually quite difficult and utilizes more muscles than walking on normal pavement does - even more so if you take off your shoes and walk with

I think its safe to say that asthma sufferers all over the world feel better when at the beach. THe natural inclination to inhale deeply when you first step on the beach is actually an automatic response to the quality of the air.

Community News & Views INDEPENDENT authors in a Chichester-based group are expanding its reach with a massive book giveaway.

CHINDI members, pictured below, want the big-hearted gesture to enable it to reach even more readers and provide a greater network of support for new and existing authors.

Children's author Christopher Joyce explains: "THe group has been running now for three years and we have built quite a reputation for supporting authors who want to self-publish.

"We have had numerous requests from writers wishing to join the group from outside the Chichester area. So, we have rebranded CHINDI as Celebrating and Helping Indie authors.

"THe book giveaway reflects the range of non-fiction and novels created by the group."

A total of 50 books, worth more than £300, will be handed out to celebrate the relaunch. THey include kids' books, romance novels, thrillers and even books about how to get children to sleep.

All the books will carry a CHINDI sticker to ask readers to leave it for another reader once the finder has finished reading it.

Typical locations where the books could be left include cafes, parks and even bus shelters.

Photographs of the sites will be posted on the group's Facebook page, Facebook/chindiauthors, and Twitter account @ChindiAuthors.

Dear Sir A FEW points about the proposed building of more homes in this area than we have been told: 1 - I have learnt that the terribly rich people from overseas buy up newly built properties all over England as an investment.

Who are the proposed homes for? An honest answer is required; 2 - Arun District Council and the builders have let us down badly. Go back in time. Did they not know that many years ago the sea went as far as Goodwood?

TRAIN rides will be available at the next Steam on Sunday event to be held

A SHOWCASE of more than 100 dancers highlighted the skills some had learnt through the Bognor Regis Timebank.

THe performers came from the Number 73 class led by dance teacher Suzanne Hill.

She has given up hours to the timebank to support dementia awareness, performing various dance routines in and around Bognor Regis with members of the Aldingbourne Trust's drop in at Number 73.

She has also attended the Access Music Disco held at THe Waverley in Bognor Regis to teach dance routines.

THe showcase performance she held celebrated the 20th anniversary of her Suzanne Hill School of Dance as well as marking the timebank's first year.

She said her weekly dance class at Number 73, which goes back two years, for adults with learning disabilities was a mix of fun and exercise.

"Everyone works at their own pace and I am delighted to see everyone achieving more than they thought possible," she said.

Among those who take part is Claire Needs, pictured below.

THe classes have enabled her to do more than she thought possible because of her cerebral palsy.

She said: "I had problems with extending my right arm and had limited movement in my shoulders and wrists.

"After seven months of dance exercise, I have now got full extension of my right arm which means I can throw a ball in a straight line when playing catch.

"My right wrist now goes completely flat without going into spasms and my weaker right arm can now support my left hand with doing tasks like holding the cup.

"Last week, I was able to rinse my own hair off in the shower because of being able to reach right round my head."

Suzanne has encouraged members from Number 73, in Aldwick Road, to take part in dance shows.

Last year, this enabled Duncan Spandley's dream of singing live to an audience at WestFest with a dance troupe performing come true.

THis encouragement also led to the Number 73 dancers being among the large cast in the school of dancing's celebration event.

Suzanne added: Nerves were high during rehearsals but, on the day, everyone was amazing and all the hard work and time that I have been given has been so worthwhile."

Her contribution to the timebank is just one of the many ways in which people have been sharing their hours and talents with the group.

Hill is home of Goodwood racecourse yet Saint Roche's Hill dates back to 250 BC

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum AT a height of 676 feet, Saint Roche’s hill, known to locals as The Trundle (from the Old English word Tryndel, meaning "circle") is a prominent peak on the western end of the South Downs.

It is one of four Neolithic causeway enclosures, man-made banks of earth, found along the Downs.

In 250 BC Iron Age ramparts were built, most likely by a tribe known as the Regni who were living in the area.

These ramparts were abandoned two centuries later when the Regni moved south, to the area that became the city of Chichester, just prior to the arrival of the Romans to the area.

In 1475 a plague chapel was built on the top of The Trundle for a priest to say prayers to deliver the city of Chichester from the pestilence (the fatal epidemic disease).

It was dedicated to Saint Roche, a Medieval French saint.

It was reputed that praying to his bones would spare people from the disease.

This is remembered on St Roche Day (16 August) with a pilgrimage to the site of the chapel where a service of healing is held, although the chapel itself had disappeared by the 18th century most likely during the Reformation.

This is where the Trundle’s alternative name of Saint Roche Hill originates.

During the English Civil War on 18th September 1645, around 1,000 locals climbed the hill to protest against demands made by the soldiers for both the Royalists and Parliamentarians.

These locals were part of a political movement known as the Clubmen, found all over England, and they used the hill as a

military base.

It was also used as a beacon to warn against attack from the French and in 1745 widespread panic was caused among the locals after the beacon was lit.

During the 18th and 19th centuries there was a masonic lodge and gibbet, or gallows, situated on the hill.

During the Second World War, the Trundle had a strategic position due to the radio shack built there which was manned by soldiers.

There is also evidence of fox holes and slit trenches cut into the ramparts.

Close to The Trundle is Goodwood racecourse which opened in 1801.

Up until the 1920's the side of The Trundle facing the racecourse was unenclosed, and people could gather there to watch the races.

In between races people could wander down the course to the Royal box to see George V and Queen Mary.

In 1933 British Pathé released a short film entitled “‘The New Goodwood!’ Trundle Hill – famous for picnics and free view – enclosed for the first time – course kept clear & ladies admitted.”

In 2016 the South Downs National Park Authority published the results of a project titled ‘Secrets of the High Woods’.

The project, largely carried out by volunteers and funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, used airborne laser scanning (LIDAR) technology to map woodland areas.

This map also covered the area of the Trundle and clearly showed the earth works.

Chi's young sharpshooters are on PostSport target to seal Sussex silverware

CHICHESTER'S young shooters have success in their sights after overcoming much more experienced competitors to lift the Sussexwide Loder Trophy at Oaklands Park.

THe competition formed part of the finals of the Sussex County Smallbore Rifle Association which took place at Chichester last weekend.

THe Loder Trophy is a handicap competition between teams of five competitors from each club.

THis means the score achieved in the competition is compared with each shooter’s average score so that those shooting the best relative to their average will win.

Chichester’s wily club coach Hamish Matheson selected five junior competitors for his team back in September and they hadn’t disappointed, getting to the final of this knockout competition, whereas Uckfield, their opponents were seasoned riflemen with higher averages.

Could the young riflemen hold their nerve?

THe answer was yes, led by top scoring James Voss 94, Nathan Tyrwhitt 93, Alex French 91, Jack Stallard 86 and Ollie Howlett 85, the Chichester team beat a very strong Uckfield team

THat was despite Robin Brown’s valiant 100.

THere was double success for Chi as theclub also took home the Veterans Team KO. With each team consisting of three competitors shooting one ten shot card each.

Centaur’s Linda Smallbone gave her team a great start with a highest possible score of 100.

However, the team could only score 281 ex 300, whilst Chichester scored 289 ex 300 to give them a comprehensive victory with Hamish Matheson scoring 96 and Jan Whittle 95.

In a packed day of action, Chichester’s Rob Dowling finished in second place behind Southwick’s Adam Cornbill in the Sussex short range competition.

Chi's Alex French also performed admirably, winning bronze in the under 18 competition, behind Charles White of East Grinstead and Reece Lelliot of Aldingbourne.

THe Veterans Championship was another hotly contested competition with some seasoned finalists.

But Linda Smallbone of Centaur had a perfect second card, hitting ten bulls in a row to give her the title ahead of East Grinstead's Malcolm Brown.

CHICHESTER RFC will hope to end the season on a high - even if it does end in relegation.

THe Blues have been consistently inconsistent all year.

With just one game to go in the National League THree (London and South East), Chi are sitting in the drop zone, three points from safety.

THe Blues must beat third-place Westcombe Park at home tomorrow (3pm) to have any chance of staying up.

Even then, only an extremely unlikely failure

by Sutton and Epsom to beat bottom-side Amersham and Chiltern in their last match could save the Blues.

Rob Lawrence's side only have themselves to blame for being in this position.

At the start of this month, Chi still could have dragged themselves up to a mid-table spot.

But successive defeats to struggling Guildford and already relegated Colchester last time out has left the Blues teetering on the brink.

tomorrow will be hoping to at least end the season on a high, even if it does result in a drop down a division.

It will be a tough game for the Blues, with the return fixture back at the start of the season seeing them lose out by a single point in an 1817 defeat.

Such a result this time - while it will lift the mood around the club - will do little to help the Blues fight against the drop.

For that reason, club officials are urging people to turn out and cheer the club on to what would be a great escape.

Tomorrow is set to be a busy day for all those at Oaklands Park as it will also see the club host the Sussex Plate & Bowl Finals.

At midday,the Sussex Bowl between Hastings & Bexhill Seconds and Brighton THirds will take place. THen at 2.15pm, it will be the Sussex Plate, with Midhurst taking on East Grinstead.

With a busy day planned, those heading to the ground by car are being urged to use the Northgate car park.

Established in 1990, the club forms part of the Selsey Country Club.

As well as taking part in a host of league matches, this year the club has announced the intention to form a Junior Section for the club.

THe fact that they already had several new adult members signed up for the forthcoming season is seen as an encouraging sign for those on the committee.

THere was further good news when the club held their annual Open Day on Easter Saturday.

On a bright but breezy day the turnout was very good and considerable interest was shown in joining the Little Spain.

THe members are already looking forward to their first friendly challenge match of the season on May 3, when they travel to local rivals Crablands for what is always an interesting encounter.

Pagham look to experience and youth with new managers

PAGHAM'S new management team look set to look to the future to fire the Lions to success.

Less than a week after boss Mark Bennett announced he would be stepping away from Nyetimber Lane at the end of the season, the board have announced his replacement.

THose looking for consistency will be happy - with Bennett's long-term assistant Richie Hellen, pictured left, taking on the main job.

He will be joined by Tom Simmonds, top right, who has won five trophies in three years as head coach of Pagham's under 21s, as joint manager. Will Searle, bottom right, will also step up from the youth set up to be first team coach.

Chairman Tony Shea said: "We feel that, with Richie's experience, coupled with Tom and Will's proven success with both under18s and under-21s teams means that the club as a whole will continue to move forward to achieve its ambitions."

Bennett's last game will be the cup final against leaders Haywards Heath Town on May 1 at THe Beacon in Hassocks. A coach will be running to the match from Pagham.

Falcon rookies soar in finals Lions inflict derby defeat on Chi Ne

CHICHESTER Falcons are proving that experience counts for nothing in softball, winning a trophy with a team packed full of rookies.

Played with a bigger all than baseball, softball is proving to be a popular mixed sex sport for people of all ages.

Following on from a hugely successful rookie night at Oaklands Park last month, Chichester Falcons Softball Club took an inexperienced team to Eastleigh's Rookieball tournament, half of whom had not seen a softball until a fortnight ago.

Nonetheless, they brought home the Falcons' first silverware of the year, beating the UPSU Shafters in the Plate final.

In the group games, the rookies crucially overcame High Voltage 12-8, thanks to triples from pitcher James Porter and first baseman Shannon McCarthy, to earn a place in the Plate semi-final against the Southampton Spitfires.

After a cagey first innings, the Falcons stepped up a gear.

Keaton Irvine notched up her fifth straight base hit to help

create a seven run lead, before the Spitfires recovered to 1413 in the final innings, but now with two outs.

Outfielder Mike Moore snagged a prospective fly ball to kill the game and give Chichester the win.

THe Plate final, against UPSU Shafters, was a game of attrition, with all the pressure on the pitchers.

At 10-8 to the Falcons things were looking tight, but a disciplined infield of Olly Howley, Emma Brown and Miguel Rosa kept the Shafters at bay.

Chichester pulled ahead, thanks to Anne Rutherford hitting her third from three, while junior Molly Rayner displayed great base-running.

THe clock eventually ran down with the Falcons ahead at 2112 and the score was reverted to the last innings, Chichester winning it 13-9.

THe new recruits can now look forward to battling in the Sussex & Surrey Softball Series, starting in May. Anyone who wants to try softball email: chichesterfalcons@gmail.com.

CHICHESTER City may be flying high but it was local rivals Pagham who secured local bragging rights after a 3-1 Easter Monday derby day win.

At the start of the campaign, many predicted the Lions of Nyetimber Road as the side to make a SCFL Premier promotion challenge.

Chi on the other hand were more likely to be mid-table fodder.

But manager Miles Rutherford has marshalled his side into a tough side to beat - and before last weekend had lost just three times in the league all season.

THat form had propelled them to third and on the edge of an unlikely title challenge.

Pagham on the other hand had faltered and were 15 points adrift in fourth spot.

But it was the Lions who stole the show, sealing a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Callum Overton, George Cody and Daryl Wollers.

Josh Clack scored Chi's consolation.

It was a good couple of days for Pagham, who just two days earlier had beaten Broadbridge Heath 4-1 away, thanks to an Overton hattrick and Matthew Ryan strike.

Next up is a trip to second-placed Shoreham

tomorrow (3pm), who will be looking to close the one point gap on league leaders Haywards Heath.

Chi on the other hand had a bad Easter - with the defeat at Nyetimber coming off the back of a 4-1 home loss to Loxwood on Saturday.

THose two defeats have all but ended the Lillywhites' slim title hopes.

But Rutherford will be wanting his side to build momentum ahead of a promotion push next season, starting at home to Lancing tomorrow (3pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey continued their unpredicatable ways.

Saturday saw Steve Bailey's side lose on the road at relegation-threatened Ringmer, Joe Manners giving the Blues the lead before four unanswered goals inflicted an unlikely 4-1 defeat on Selsey.

THen on Monday, the Blues put in a fine display to hold already promoted East Preston to a 1-1 draw, Joe Clarke getting the goal.

With Bailey's side still holding on to seventh spot, a top half finish is all but secured.

But they will want to end their season on a high, with the last match coming tomorrow on the road at Seaford Town (3pm.

Selsey won the return fixture 2-0 back in December with Clarke and Morgan Forry scoring the goals.

Sids seal third spot as Bosham win the title SIDLESHAM rounded off a solid season by sealing third spot after a battling draw with local rivals Bosham.

For much of the season, the tie at Walton Lane on Easter Monday looked set to be a SCFL Division Two title decider.

But the Sids have stuttered of late - allowing the Robins to wrap up the championship before last weekend's local derby.

THat meant that Daren Pearce's side gave Bosham a guard of honour as they made their way on to the pitch. It was perhaps as exciting as it got, as both sides played out a goalless draw in front of a bumper crowd.

It was then on to the trophy presentation, with Andy Probee's side lifting the silverware in front of a home crowd.

Bosham will finish the season on the road tomorrow, as they play Cowfold (3pm).

For Sidlesham though, the season is over with the green and golds securing a third place finish.

THat may be a disappointment for some at the Rec Ground as the Sids were matching Bosham every step of the way until midMarch. But a run of one win in five saw Pearce's side slip up and even overtaken by the in-form Jarvis Brook.

With no game this weekend, the Sids will now turn their attention on the Division Two cup final next Tuesday which will see the grren and golds pitched against Westfield at Middle Road in Shoreham (7.45pm).

Westfield currently sit sixth but the Sids have beaten the team from near Hastings twice already in the league this season.

Howell urges Bognor to bounce back after Havant horror show Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is urging his side to take care of business - despite a defeat at title rivals Havant & Waterlooville leaving his side agonisingly short in the championship run-in.

Hundreds of Rocks fans made the short trip across the Hampshire border on Easter Monday knowing that a win for Howell's side would seal the Ryman Premier title and promotion to the Conference South.

But in a rare blip, Bognor suffered a 1-0 reverse, leaving them two points behind Havant with just one game to go.

THat means the Rocks must beat the Met Police at home on tomorrow (3pm) and hope that rivals slip up as they travel to Kingstonian.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We will be fully prepared to get a win and I will pick the best team that I have available to do so.

"If we win then we will see what happens elsewhere. If it is meant to happen then it will happen.

"We just have to get ready for Met Police, take care of our things at our end and if they [Havant] slip up then we can catch up. If not then we go for the playoffs."

Rocks fans will recognise the pragmatic response from their manager who has worked wonders with a squad built with very little funds. But even after a remarkable run this season, even Howell could not hide his frustration at the way his side performed

in front of an Easter Monday league record crowd of more than 3,400 fans.

In a match where Bognor had just one shot, former Rocks loanee Wes Fogden scored the only goal of the game.

Howell said: "I'm still at a loss to explain what happened. I think we have to give credit to the opponents, maybe their experience helped on the day.

"But we just didn't play and had too many people off the game on the day and didn't meet up to levels on the day.

"THere's no lying - it was a massive disappointment for us and the club. It's something like 37 years since we were going for this title and the crowd needed something to shout about. But we didn't have anything and it turned into damp squib.

"THe support we had was phenomenal. It was unbelievable to see so many people as we had in the ground cheering us on and we just didn’t turn up.

"I don't think it was a lack of effort. THey all worked very hard but we just had one shot at goal."

Monday's result was a long way from Easter Saturday when the Rocks sealed a 3-0 win against a very physical Harlow side. A Gary Charman header and two James Fraser penalties sealed the win against the visitors, who were reduced to nine men. Now all focus is on Met Police and, maybe, lady luck.

Rocks' rocky road to promotion SUPPORTING the Rocks is never an easy occupation.

And the loss on Easter Monday to Havant means that the next week or so will be full of uncertainty for everyone at Nyewood Lane.

After leading the way for much of 2017, Bognor find themselves sitting in second two points behind their local rivals.

Ahead of tomorrow's final match of the regular season, the Rocks know they must win at home to Met Police to have any chance of lifting the title.

But that will rely on big-spending Havant to drop points on their travels at Kingstonian.

THe odds will be against that happening, with the Surrey side in the bottom half.

THis means that a more likely route for the Rocks to get promoted is the playoffs.

While history has not been too kind to Jamie Howell's side in the past, this year they would go into the mix as by far the best team based on league form and with home advantage.

Likely opponents for the semi-final, which will take place on THursday, could be Wingate & Finchley. However, Leiston or Enfield could yet fill the fifth spot in the league. THen the final on Bank Holiday Monday could pitch the Rocks against Dulwich or Enfield Town.

SO IT has come down to the last game of the season against Metropolitan Police tomorrow at Nyewood Lane after our 1-0 loss to Havant this past Easter Monday.

I have to say the attendance was amazing at West Leigh Park and I felt Bognor largely outnumbered and outsung the home support. Only once Wes Fogden (ex-Rock) had given Havant the lead did they really get singing.

But to be honest Havant were, in my opinion, clear favourites here. THey had a day of extra rest, they had a chance to scout us just two days before the local clash and they were playing at home.

We never seemed to get going in this game which reminded me much of the fixture away to Enfield Town when nothing seemed to work.

But this is football and I wouldn’t have it any other way supporting BRTFC. Sure, winning the league at Havant would have been awesome, but when you look at the overall picture of how the team has done this year, against all the odds and against all of the nay-sayers, they have proved a lot of people wrong.

THe Rocks have performed far and beyond what anyone expected - myself included. If you were to say we were going to fight for the championship back in July 2016 I wouldn’t have believed you.

After the tough Enfield loss away at the beginning of April, it was home next to AFC Sudbury. Jimmy Muitt played really well and got a hat-trick and Darren Budd had a sublime game, finishing off Sudbury with a fine strike.

I enjoyed the trip to Suffolk - plus the facilities really impressed me. 3G pitches seem to be a growing theme at this level of the game.

THis pitch certainly was an improvement on Enfield’s version of a ploughed field.

THen back at home to take on the in-form Harlow team who were certainly physical in their tactics and paid for it with two sending offs.

I thought the referee controlled the game really well

and after a fine Gary Charman header and two James Fraser penalties we had the game won. Unfortunately Charman and Sami El-Abd would have to pay with quite nasty and unnecessary injuries inflicted by the Harlow players, meaning Charman is doubtful for the rest of the season and El-Abd is heavily bandaged up.

You cannot fault the team’s desire and their hard work this season. Whatever happens tomorrow against Met Police this has been another exciting season.

Sitting next to Ray on the coach on the way home to Littlehampton I was as quiet as a mouse - I am a sore loser after all. I was gutted when that goal went in at Havant when a draw would have been a fantastic result.

I said to Mark at the game when the goal went in, “Here we go again - play-offs”. But as we came home Ray and Dave reminded us all that if we win tomorrow and Havant lose or draw, we still win the championship.

I will therefore be a Kingstonian fan as well as a Rocks supporter tomorrow.

UP THE K’s! Never thought I’d say that but that’s what we need to happen.

At least if we finish in the play-offs we will be at home for both games. I know that’s not really a consolation but its something. We need to remain positive.

I have to give a big shout-out to all of the Bognor fans at the game on Monday who helped to set a new league record attendance of 3,455, which led to the game being delayed to allow so many people in!

I was there 15 minutes after the game and it was like being at Grimsby all over again as the singing continued. And that included no musical instruments of any kind, save for some passionate vocal chords.

I hope to see you all at the Lane tomorrow for our last game (we hope) of the season tomorrow. Keep the faith as they say! We can still dare to dream!
