Bring on a General Election! BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS for a snap General Election less than seven weeks ago have been welcomed by political leaders across Chichester. Prime Minister Theresa May made the shock announcement on Tuesday and on Wednesday, MP's voted overwhelmingly

in favour of a General Election which will now take place in just seven weeks time on Thursday, June 8. Now, political parties across the city and across the country will begin campaigning. It comes less than a year after 52 per cent of people voted to leave the European Union. Chichester's MP Andrew Tyrie gave his reaction to the announcement. He said: "

"The Prime Minister can now obtain her own mandate to take forward the crucial tasks of bringing stability to the economy and ensuring that its benefits reach as many people as possible in British society. “The election is also an opportunity to further Britain’s national interest by strengthening the government’s negotiating position with its EU counterparts.

“The financial crash, the effects of the emergency measures to try to restore some stability to the economy, and the referendums of the last few years have all left Britain with new problems and, in some aspects, divided. “Some of the claims and counter claims from politicians and others in the course of those campaigns devalued the currency of politics."
