Warning after truck accident BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk BUSINESSES who use forklift trucks are being urged to check their safety procedures after a Chichester company was fined for a breach of health and safety law. THe warning is being issued after a lorry driver, who was delivering timber

to Covers Builders Merchants in Quarry Lane, suffered life-changing injuries when a forklift truck crushed his hand against a metal post. Robert Gassor, 37, from Oxfordshire, made the delivery on March 18 last year. Rupert Green, chairman at Covers, said: “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Gassor and his family for the injury he has suffered as a result of the incident. “Following the incident involving Mr

Gassor, we have carried out a thorough internal investigation and review of all our policies and procedures and implemented additional preventative measures at all our depots. " When Mr Gassor arrived, the timber on his vehicle was unloaded using a forklift truck operated by a David Cover and Son Ltd (Covers) employee. After the timber had been unloaded, Mr Gassor got out of his cab and started

to stow away under the lorry, the bearers on which the timber had been placed. While he was doing this, the forklift truck returned and its Cover’s driver passed over paperwork. Mr Gassor then returned to stowing the bearers. As the forklift truck pulled away, its rear swung out and crushed Mr Gassor’s hand against a part-stowed bearer. Continued on page four
