Drivers face testing times by Fiona Callingham news@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 18 FUTURE private hire car drivers in Chichester will have to show their knowhow about the city. THe drivers will be a given a quiz to ensure they can make their way around the area. THe need to pass a test in order to hold
a private hire driver licence was agreed by councillors on Wednesday. Chichester District Council’s general licensing committee meeting agreed that the implementation of a knowledge test for applicants would be necessary. THey wanted to improve the drivers’ awareness of the city in which they will be working as well as being able to communicate with their passengers. Vice-chairman Cllr Henry Potter
backed the idea. He said: "If they are a respectable, qualified driver then they shouldn't be worried about the knowledge test." Neighbouring local authorities such as Arun District Council, Havant Borough Council and East Hampshire District Council already require hopeful taxi and private hire drivers to pass a knowledge test. THis has led to increasing numbers
of applications being submitted to the Chichester council in order to avoid having to take the test with their local authority. Initial proposals for the test also include questions about taxi and private hire law, the council's policy and requirements, the Highway Code and road signs and basic literacy and numeracy skills.
