TRIBUTES have been paid to a university student who died having struggled with mental health problems.

Matthew Roberts died on March 7 last year, having suffered complications from

"He was diagnosed back in 1999 at the age of five with diabetes.

"It never stopped Matt participating in anything.

"He was a very keen rugby player and played for the school.

"He would always go for things fully.

Concerns were raised at the inquest in Horsham last week about the communication which took place regarding Matt's care between the NHS Trust in Sussex and the Trust in Wiltshire, where Matt had been over Christmas at his family home.

He was always one who enjoyed life."

Mr Roberts went on to talk about Matt's passion for music.

At a young age, he took to the piano and as he got older he began composing music.

But after starting his course at the university, he began to find himself under pressure.

Pensioner killed by walking into car EXCLUSIVE

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A PENSIONER was killed after he walked out in front of a car without looking, an inquest has heard.

John Warne, better known as Peter, died on July 22 last year after he was hit by a car in Florence Road in Chichester, West Sussex County Council's Coroner's Court heard.

It was reported that Mr Warne, a retired shopworker, had a lifelong mild learning disability and he also suffered from diabetes.

THe driver of the car that hit Mr Warne was Mr Christopher Kilbey. A statement from him was read to the court. He was taking his wife to a hospital appointment at the time of the accident.

In the statement, he said: "I have got no recollection of seeing anyone walking along the pavement on my left.

"THe first thing I recall happening was suddenly seeing something there in front of my car.

"It happened so quickly that at first I thought something had been thrown in front of my car.

"I didn't have time to do anything apart from emergency brake. THere was a big bang. I hit the brake hard."

Mr Kilbey said he received a phone call later to tell him that Mr Warne had died.

He added: "It shocked me a lot to hear this. I can't understand why he was going across the road like that. I can only think

he must have misjudged the traffic.

"I don't think I could have done anything differently. THe man was just too fast. THere was no way I could avoid him."

Sabine Gill witnessed the accident as she was also driving along the road at the time.

THe court heard how she was concerned about the way Mr Warne was behaving immediately before the accident. In a statement, she said: "Something about the way he was moving made me think he was rushing into the road.

"He seemed to move forward so fast.

He hadn't looked left - he just moved straight ahead.

"I was so shocked. It was almost surreal what he did, as if he was just going for it. If he had looked, he would have seen the car and would have not crossed the road."

Mr Kilbey was tested for alcohol and drugs but nothing was found in his system. Police carried out investigations on the vehicle he was driving and a dashcam inside his car showed he was not at fault and that nothing could have been done to prevent the accident. He was also travelling within the speed limit.

Assistant coroner Joanne Andews concluded that Mr Warne died as the result of a road traffic accident.

She said: "It would appear that Peter started to cross the road when he was hit by the car driven by Mr Kilbey, sadly suffering fatal injuries.

"Mr Kilbey was not travelling at excessive speed. THere was insufficient time for Mr Kilbey to have reacted to Mr Warne stepping out into the road."

Council tax bill is on the rise THE CABINET at Chichester District Council has backed proposals to increase the average council tax bill by 10p a week, which would mean the average taxpayer paying £2.90 a week for services provided by the council.

THeir proposal will now be discussed at the full council meeting next month when a final decision will be made.

Chichester District Council charges one of the lowest council tax rates in the country.

Although the council collects the council tax, this is then distributed to a number of public services. THe council’s share amounts to around nine per cent of the amount paid each year.

THe rest goes to West Sussex County Council (79 per cent), Sussex Police

(nine per cent), and parish councils (three per cent on average). Each authority makes its own decisions about its council tax increases independently.

Councillor Philippa Hardwick, cabinet member for finance at the council, said: “Keeping council tax low has always been a priority for us.

“Over the past few years, we have been working really hard to make major savings to cope with cuts to our government funding.

"THis was so that we could minimise any impact on our residents and continue to provide them with quality public services. If this proposal is agreed by full council our council tax charges will continue to remain amongst the lowest in the country.

Delays ahead of superstore

Children spend the night in space as part of competition

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP of school children have spent the night in THe Novium Museum after winning a very special competition.

Youngsters aged seven to 11 across the south east were challenged to use their imagination and write about their dream space job to win a sleepover for their whole class in the museum’s brand new Tim Peake exhibition.

THe sleepovers have been funded by a grant from the UK Space Agency.

A panel of experts including the museum’s learning team, the European Space Agency and even Tim Peake’s parents, Nigel and Angela Peake, helped to pick the winners from more than 600

entries.

Year 5 pupil, Oscar, won the sleepover for his entire class by writing about his dream space job of building and setting up the “best space hotel on Mars”, with lots of different exciting rooms including an ice room, a gravity room and a pizza room.

His class, from Camesdale Primary School in Haslemere were able to explore the museum after dark, take part in a special space treasure hunt, build their own rocket, play games and enjoy a special bedtime story before settling down to sleep beneath the stars.

Nine other schools from across the south east also won a sleepover, including Lavant CoE Primary School.

THe Tim Peake exhibition, which is free, is now open and takes visitors

on a space journey that follows Tim Peake’s astronomical adventure – from growing up in Chichester to becoming the first British European Space Agency astronaut. THe exhibition got the approval of Tim when he popped in for a surprise visit recently.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be back here in my home town of Chichester and to be here at the wonderful exhibition at THe Novium Museum.

"I am absolutely delighted - you’ve done an absolutely wonderful job so thank you so much.”

Councillor Gillian Keegan, cabinet member for commercial services at Chichester District Council, said: "It’s been great to see how local children have been inspired by Tim’s mission.

“Encouraging children to get involved

with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects is a key aim for the council so it is fantastic to see how the message has resonated with people across the south.”

Manager of the museum, Cathy Hakes, said: “We’ve had over 600 fantastic entries from schools across the south and it’s been a tough time for our panel to narrow this down to just 10 winners.

“We look forward to welcoming Oscar and his class for their sleepover and I encourage anyone who hasn’t visited the exhibition to come and celebrate Tim’s achievements with us.”

THe exhibition is supported by strategic sponsors, Air Products, Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth and Vanderbilt Homes.

THe Novium Museum is owned and operated by Chichester District Council.

MOTORISTS are being warned about potential disruption in Selsey due to the construction of a new Asda store.

Building is due to start in Chichester Road on the entrance of the new Asda car park.

Work begins on Monday and is set to last for 11 weeks.

Construction company RG Group will also make alterations to the Manor Road and Chichester Road roundabout and will widen the road.

Manor Road will close northbound during the works.

THis will create a one-way system for traffic to follow through the roadworks.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place for the last five weeks of the construction.

THe signals will be operated manually at peak times.

All work is carried out between 8am and 6pm. No work will be taking place at weekends.

RG Group spokesman Craig Goodison said: “RG Group has vast experience in completing projects of this nature.

“THe necessary alterations to the road will improve access in and around the local area and every measure will be taken to ensure disruption is well managed and kept to a minimum.

“THe benefits the new development will bring to Selsey long term are enormous and will provide an important boost to the area once completed."

Exciting plans are promised for town ` Police alert over dodgy plumber A MAN who claimed to be a plumber appears to have searched a Bognor Regis flat after he talked his way into the property.

He called at the flat in Chipley Court and said he had been working upstairs and needed to go in and check for an airlock in the plumbing. He was allowed into the kitchen where he went into the cupboard under the sink.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "When he left, the victim noticed that a camera bag had been moved, a light had been turned on in a bedroom and a drawer had been opened. However, while nothing had been stolen, police believe it was possibly because he did not get the opportunity and are concerned that he might be more successful elsewhere."

THe incident happened just before 5pm on January 28. THe man was white, in his late 20s-early 30s, clean-shaven and about 6ft tall.

He wore a dark-coloured zip-up fleece jacket, dark trousers, black gloves and a baseball cap. He had two hooped earrings in his right ear.

EXCITING plans are being lined up to regenerate Bognor Regis, a leading councillor has pledged.

Cllr Phil Hitchins, who chairs Arun District Council's regeneration subcommittee for the town, said he was sure residents would be delighted when the proposals were unveiled later this month.

"At our next meeting of Bognor Regis regeneration on February 27, we will bring forward our own ideas for both the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites.

"I think you will be more than surprised with our plans. THey most definitely have the 'Wow, I hadn't thought of that' factor," he said."

As reported, the Sir Richard Hotham Project's £80m plans to regenerate the two key sites were refused planning permission by Arun last week.

Councillors voted decisively to reject the proposals because they said the designs were unsuitable and involved the loss of too many parking spaces.

THe project wanted to create a 1,100seat theatre and conference centre with a 48-bedroom hotel and two shops on the Hothamton car park.

For the Regis Centre, the proposal involved a mixed development of retail, leisure, cafes, 192 flats and a 64-bedroom hotel.

A 200 cover destination restaurant was planned for the skateboard on the former Esplanade THeatre site on the seafront.

All three sites are owned by Arun, which has yet to make a decision as landowner about their future.

Cllr Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said he had been unable to comment publicly

about the Sir Richard Hotham Project's plans until the planning decision had been made.

"Who wants a wall of over 190 seafront flats on the Regis Centre site and who wants less car parking? No-one I know," he said. "Who wants a massive theatre block off Queensway, which I am sure will become a 'white elephant' within a few years, leaving local taxpayers to pick up the bill? No-one I know.

"THis development was not what the residents of Bognor Regis wanted. We have considered survey after survey after survey. Everyone wants fewer flats and more car parking and that is what we will give them.

"Bognor Regis needs regeneration but not at any cost. No-one comes to Bognor Regis just to look at seafront flats.

"THey want something far more exciting and that is what we and those who submitted ideas will give you."

A spokesman for the Sir Richard Hotham Project said it was too early to comment about a possible appeal against the planning refusal.

But town councillor Jan Cosgrove said he believed the project would have an excellent chance of winning if it did appeal.

"THe government inspector will not be swayed by the sort of nonsense we have seen from Arun," he said. "THeir officer said 'approve' and they went against her recommendation.

"What is clear is the deep commitment of the Sir Richard Hotham team in terms of belief, money expended to date and their local connection and loyalty."

Arson-hit cricket club nears halfway mark of its appeal GENEROUS supporters have helped Aldwick Cricket Club raise thousands of pounds in just ten days.

THe online appeal set up by the club after its pavilion was wrecked in an arson attack had almost reached the halfway mark of its appeal by Tuesday morning.

A total of 98 backers had chipped in donations towards the club's bid to rise from the ashes after the firebug struck in the early hours of January 30.

THe initial success of the appeal on www.crowdfunder.co.uk has seen the club raise £4,900 to help its members overcome the shock of the blaze.

THe appeal will last until the evening of February 27 to give the club a good chance of rising from the ashes.

THis will be a month after the pavilion at the Brooks Lane recreation ground in Bognor Regis was set alight.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from Bognor Regis fire station were sent to the scene.

THey spent more than two-and-a-half hours tackling the flames. Writing on the fundraising website, cricket club member Ian Guppy said: "From the outside, this rundown building was probably an eyesore but inside it gave so many people so many memories."

Evening parking charges to continue despite concerns

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS have stuck to their guns and vowed to continue with plans to introduce evening parking charges in two of Chichester's car parks on a trial basis.

Last month, Chichester District Council's cabinet agreed to extend parking charges from 6pm until 8pm from Monday to Saturday at the Northgate and New Park car parks.

But the council's overview and scrutiny committee raised concerns about the plans and it was called back to the cabinet this week.

THe committee suggested that the cabinet reconsidered the decision because it was felt that identifying only two car parks was unfair and targeted to the city.

And it was thought an increase in all current car parking charges in all the district's car parks during current charging hours would be fairer.

THe two car parks are commonly used by people going to THe New Park Cinema and Chichester Festival THeatre.

But councillors have pushed ahead with the changes despite the concerns.

Councillor Gillian Keegan, cabinet member for commercial services at the council, said: "THis raises concern about the impact on residents and local businesses.

"Any car park increase is generally not supported.

"But this is a trial on two car parks out of 17 in the city. THe trial will reveal more information about consumer behaviour and any impact that it might have on the night-time economy."

Cllr Keegan said a 20 minute dropoff zone has been introduced at the New Park Centre to allow people who struggle to walk or who carry heavy equipment the opportunity to be picked up and dropped off. THe centre also has 15 car parking spaces of its own, and all disabled parking is free.

THe council has said the charges will help cover the costs of maintenance, lighting and CCTV in the car parks.

Councillor Tony Dignum, leader of the council, added: "If we have a trial, we don't do it in all 17 car parks. We choose two and these happen to be the most heavily used car parks.

"Increasing car parking charges everywhere during the day is something we specifically promised not to do and we don't intend to break that promise.

"If we don't raise revenue this way then which services do we cut? Our policy is to maintain services - not to cut them.

We have to look for other ways to raise money."

It will run for 12 months and will see visitors paying 70p for an hour, or £1.50 for two hours to cover their visit in Northgate, or £1.20 for an hour or £2.60 for up to two hours in New Park Road.

Warning after cars broken into in the city POLICE have warned drivers not to leave items on display in their cars following a series of reported breakins since the beginning of the year.

Police in Chichester are urging drivers to be vigilant following 70 reported break-ins to cars and vans from across the district.

Offenders have been visiting beauty spot car parks during the day and smashing windows to gain entry to the vehicles as well as causing some damage to locks and doors.

Various items such as handbags, laptops, hair straighteners and even a birthday cake have been stolen from vehicles.

Chidham Lane, Kingley Vale, Cocking Hill and South Harting car parks, among others, have been targeted.

Sergeant Chris White said: "We are increasing our patrols of the area at various different times of the day, but there are some things that visitors can do to help deter thieves.

"THe best advice is to not to leave anything of value in your vehicle, especially not on display.

"In the unfortunate event that you do return to your car and find that it has been broken into, please make sure you report it as soon as possible through our website or by calling 101.

"In an emergency you can always call 999."

STAFF and students at Chichester College have been taking a united stand against campus litter.

Spurred on by the frustration of scattered pieces of rubbish in the grounds, the college organised a special ‘Respect the Environment’ week. It was designed to raise awareness of the wider issue of landfill and recycling, as well as encourage people to look after their own environments better.

Mr Roberts said that he had found himself unable to cope mentally.

"He was always practising, always playing. THat's when we realised that in actual fact, it had taken over. He felt he needed to be playing more.

"He had been practising 14 hours a day constantly and not taking any breaks.

"THe voices were telling him that he needed to play more and practise more to get things right."

Two days after he returned to Chichester, Matt was found unconscious in the home he shared with his university friends. He had taken an overdose of prescribed drugs combined with insulin for his diabetes.

He was rushed to St Richard's Hospital where doctors said it is likely he had suffered significant brain damage. THe decision was made to fit a tracheostomy.

Unfortunately, he then caught a rare infection which led to complications and eventually, he suffered a cardiac arrest and died on March 7.

Mr Roberts said he last spoke to Matt on the morning of the day he took the overdose.

"We had agreed that we wouldn't pressure him by ringing him all the time," he added.

"We spoke to him on the Saturday and he was ok at that point. THen we received a phone call to be told that Matt was at St Richard's Hospital."

She said: "I don't think any of us will know what happened to Matt on that weekend and what it was that led Matt to do what he did. All we know is he took an overdose of prescribed medication and his insulin.

Addressing Mr and Mrs Roberts, she added: "I'm so sorry for you to lose a son in such circumstances.

"He was a man who really had such a talent and I am sorry to hear what happened to him."

Ms Dolan added that the NHS Trust in Sussex need to put in place more robust procedures to ensure that information is received about new referrals.

THe court heard that an appointment wasn't made with Matt to check on his mental health when he returned to university from his home in Chippenham. She added: "It seems to me there should be a more robust procedure about how soon the appointment should be made."

Carol Bowes is the managing director of the Avon and Wiltshire Partnership Trust. She promised Matt's parents that a review would be undertaken to ensure that communication across the trusts was made clear and they would be updated on changes made within the Trust.

Charitable trust could take over popular city museum

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A CHARITABLE trust could take over the responsibility of THe Novium Museum as Chichester District Council looks to build and expand on its current success.

Councillors are exploring the options following a piece of work that was carried out to look at future opportunities and improvements that would enable the museum to continue to provide best value to residents.

Last month, The Chichester Post reported that visitor numbers at the museum had doubled in December compared to the same period in 2015, following the launch of the Tim Peake exhibition.

Councillor Gillian Keegan, cabinet member for commercial services at the council, said: "In the current economic climate we have to look at ways of reducing costs and providing services more efficiently.

"THe museum and tourist information centre are constantly doing this, and have made huge strides by introducing weddings at THe Guildhall and increasing visitor numbers through exhibitions and activities.

“Since offering free entry, things have really started to turn around. Visitor numbers and the museum’s income have significantly increased and the museum has introduced some fantastic

new exhibitions such as the Tim Peake exhibition.

"Visitor numbers in December, compared with the same month a year earlier, have doubled. THis is great news and the museum team is doing a great job. What we need to do is to look for the most efficient way of continuing this good work.

“We have already looked into the benefits of a trust running the museum on our behalf. THis option would enable the museum to access and attract grants and funding that the council cannot. At the moment, we feel that this is the best option.

“Trusts are able to operate differently to the council, which leads to savings and economies of scale.

“It is important to point out that we would still own the museum and we would manage the operational contract.

THere would also be a process to ensure the management company performs to the standards that we expect.

“It’s also an approach that many other councils across the country have successfully adopted and so this way of working is definitely tried and tested.

THe service to our customers would continue as usual.

“Providing our residents with high quality services, in the most costeffective way, is our priority.”

THe council will now start a procurement process to explore the option of working with a partner.

What would you like to change in our city?

PEOPLE across the Chichester district are being reminded to share their views about the future of the city through a public consultation.

THe Chichester Vision aims to enhance the city, attract inward investment and stimulate economic growth.

THe six-week consultation will run until Sunday, March 19, and gives people the opportunity to contribute their own ideas, comments and suggestions for how they would like to see the city evolve over the next 20 years.

A series of public exhibitions will be taking place offering further information.

Lecture about great playwright NEW evidence about history’s most celebrated playwright in 16th century London is to be revealed at an open lecture at the University of Chichester.

Shakespeare scholar Professor Duncan Salkeld, of the institution’s Department of English and Creative Writing, will present his latest research about the Bard unearthed from the original records of Elizabethan prisons.

THe 90-minute seminar, on Wednesday, February 15, is part of a series of public lectures highlighting the research of acclaimed academics, scientists, and authors of the university.

Professor Salkeld said: “Stratford made the man but London made the phenomenon even if, at the end of his writing career, Shakespeare felt himself an outsider in the great metropolis.

“THis lecture will explore key questions of his apparent status as a reluctant Londoner and outline details of Elizabethan life such as the people and locations associated with his work.”

THe Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literate will examine

his evidence on the playhouses that introduced the Bard’s productions on his arrival in London.

THe research, which is based on the 400-year-old records of the notorious Bridewell Palace city prison, focuses on the recently-excavated Curtain THeatre in Shoreditch.

Professor Salkeld will also talk about Shakespeare’s family and the reasoning behind the playwright’s ridicule of Sir William Brooke through Henry IV character Falstaff.

He added: “THere are some real horror stories from the prison records including knife fights, gang wars, and diseases - London in the 16th century was a grim place.

“It is astonishing that Shakespeare not only survived the bubonic plague and other poxes but one of the most dangerous and deadly periods of the capital’s history.”

` Campaign to hire health care staff MORE than 100 health care workers are being sought for hospitals which include Bognor Regis.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation is holding a recruitment day at the town's war memorial hospital to help to fill its vacancies for health care assistants.

THe event will take place from 10am to 3pm on February 22 in Marion's Restaurant in the hospital in Shripney Road.

Caroline Haynes, the trust's deputy director for human resources, said: "If you are caring, compassionate and looking for a career where you will be supported to reach your potential, then we want to hear from you.

"We have 120 roles to fill and we're making it as easy as possible for people to apply for these jobs."

THe trust's campaign, Because You Care, was launched on Tuesday to fill the 22 full-time positions, and part-time jobs, across coastal West Sussex.

THe new assistants will be based in inpatient units and other community-based teams in Sussex.

Another 15 full-time positions are based across Sussex in children's services and specialist services.

Health care assistants are entrylevel positions for the health and care sector. THere are no set entry requirements but good literacy and numeracy skills are needed and a caring personality.

Twinning 'more important' after vote to leave Europe

LINKS between Bognor Regis and Europe have become more important than ever, the new leader of the town's twinning association has said.

Heather Perrott said it was vital the connections with the three towns on the Continent continued given the background of the political upheaval sparked by last June's Brexit vote.

“Twinning has become more important after the referendum. THe situation with Europe had become so good that people might not have seen the reason for twinning. But now it seems so important to reach across to our friends in our French and German twin towns who we see and meet regularly.

“It seems important to say to them that we are still their friends,” she said. “THey are disappointed by our decision to leave the EU because they want us to be part of Europe and I'm totally pro-Europe.”

But Mrs Perrott said she had been told by representatives of Trebbin, one of the German twin towns of Bognor Regis, they also understood the reason for the vote because of their worries about immigration.

Mrs Perrott was elected as the association's chairman at its annual meeting last Wednesday.

Unanimous backing from some 20 members present was an historic moment for the group. It was the first time in its 37-year history a chairman had been chosen for a third term. Mrs

Stephen studied fine art at Northbrook College and he has exhibited at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester with paintings, mainly acrylic on canvas, from a ten-day stay in Venice in Italy.

He also staged an auction of his works and raised £1,800 for the Outside In painters' group at Pallant House. He has also been helped by Danny Dawes, of the Granddad's Front Room shop.

"When I was 36, I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and my painting has given me an aim in life," he said.

"Using a computer has helped me. I used to have a workspace at Sidlesham where I painted but now I no longer have to stand and paint."

Stephen's works can measure up to 60cms x 80cms and can take some two months for him to create and then print.

THey depict Bognor Regis landmarks like the pier and imaginative scenes.

He has more than 30 works on show at World of Inks in York Road and many more elsewhere.

He is offering £5 off his paintings at World of Inks to anyone who takes this article into the shop and buys one.

VOLUNTEERS in the Barnham Signal Box Trust want to install its own set of signals. Michael Burton, of the trust, says: "It is believed the construction of a mast supporting semaphore signals, worked from the lever frame constructed within the adjacent signal box against which it will be sited, will add to the experience of all visitors.

"It will, in addition, assist the signal box trustees to fulfill their aim to promote the signal box as an educational resource for local schools."

He says the height of the signals will be 0.25m below the height of the signal box to lessen its impact on neighbouring residents.

THey will usually only be operated when Bognor Regis Model Railway Club meets in the signal box.

Ian presents cheque from wheelchair ride

Ian Turner raised £2,300 for the Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital by propelling himself four miles in his manual wheelchair.

He presented the cheque to Gabrielle Richardson from the children's centre.

Ian, who contracted polio as a child, wanted to support his grandson, Sidney Turner, who was born with Nance Horan Syndrome - a genetic condition which causes blindness and autism.

Sidney has undergone numerous operations at Moorfields and Great Ormond Street hospitals and will continue to do so. He is registered blind and has special needs.

Ian said he wanted to acknowledge the treatment which Sidney had received at the hospital.

"He is a very happy little boy and a joy to everyone he meets. His mother and father, like all parents of disabled condition, need a lot of support.

"But, just like Sidney, they are very brave and courageous. Sidney could have no better parents.

"Since Sidney was born, his granddad, nanny, Carol and I have watched his mum and dad, Dave and Jill, try and guide Sidney to have as normal a life as

He was accompanied by fellow Rotarians for safety and support, together with his assistance dog, Glen, a retired working sheepdog.

Spirit FM broadcasted Ian's journey live on air to help to boost the amount of money he raised.

Following the success of the event, Ian is planning to stage another fundraising occasion this May. Moorfield Hospital has offered to support him in any way it can. Business studies students pipped in bid to win contest BUSINESS students from Felpham Community College had advice from one of the world's most famous companies.

THe six Year 10 pupils were placed in the top ten of more than140 entries for the Real Business Challenge launched

by Coca Cola Enterprises.

THey were challenged to design and market a 'healthy' drink and created a watermelon drink called Pip. THis took them into the regional final of the competition held at the Amex Stadium just outside Brighton. THey were up against tough rivals from the south east's best business students.

One of the team members, Ellie Hendrick, said: "It was all set out really professionally and we felt like proper

business entrepreneurs.

"We were given a mentor from Coca Cola for our group for the day and they were brilliant - really motivating and enthusiastic about our ideas."

Her other team members were Jasmine Petworth, Ethan Eardley, Josh Lambert, Josh Stevenson and Jack Walker. THey had to present their idea to promote awareness and fundraise for the special Olympics by devising a series of presentations, radio and billboard adverts.

Gary Treharne, a teacher of business studies, said: "THe team was a huge credit to the school with the creativity they showed and the ideas they implemented into their business plan."

New scheme offers discounts to students

STUDENTS are being encouraged to shop and save in Bognor Regis.

A discount scheme has been launched

by Bognor Regis Town Council in partnership with the Students' Union at the University of Chichester and independent businesses around the town centre.

Any shop that displays the special 'Student Savers Bognor Regis' sign has pledged to offer students a discount or offer on production of their student card.

A wide range of discounted products from food and drinks to services - have been included initially.

Town councillor Martin Smith was approached by Students' Union president Luke Sheayn last December to see if a scheme was possible.

Cllr Smith said: "THis is a really good way for students to feel part of our town and link them in with local businesses.

"Having our own Student Savers scheme will benefit Bognor's independent traders and, hopefully, encourage students to come into the town and see what is on offer to them."

Mikki Collins, of the Students' Union, said she was "quite excited by the scheme and looking forward to seeing it expand".

Some 1,500 are based at the Bognor Regis campus of the university.

Another 1,000 or so will study in its new engineering and digital technology park.

THe scheme follows the successful launch by the town council last summer to offer Butlin's guests discounts locally.

f The firefighters after their training

Fire crews train to use new pump TEN FIREFIGHTERS from Bognor Regis and East Wittering have been trained to use a new pump to ease flooding.

THe high volume pump bought by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is capable of discharging 7,000 litres of water a minute along 3km of hose.

It can be used to pump water away from a flood or to support fire engines at an incident.

Crew commander Russ Moore, the pump's service delivery lead, said: "We're delighted to have completed this training, making us that much closer to getting our pump operational.

"We're looking forwad to having it ready and available to assist residents of West Sussex and beyond when needed."

THe training was based at Bognor Regis Fire Station as well as Mewsbrook Park in Littlehampton.

It ended in an exercise at Fawley Power Station near Southampton in which the crews demonstrated the skills and techniques they had learned alongside crews from Hampshire.

THis latest stage of training brings to a close more than six months of instruction in the fire and rescue service of the proper use and maintenance of the pump system and the hook-lift trucks used to carry it.

When the pump is fully integrated into the service, it will be classed as a national firefighting asset.

ONE IN eight food outlets in the Arun district could lose up to half of their customers.

THe warning has come from NFU Mutual in a food hygiene ratings report released on Monday.

THe insurance company has found 44 per cent of people would turn away from even their favourite place to eat if faced with a food hygiene rating of three or less if a new law for mandatory display of 'scores on the doors' ratings comes into effect.

At present, NFU Mutual says 139 of the 1,123 food businesses in the Arun district - or 12.38 per cent had hygiene scores of three or less.

THis is the equal highest proportion in West Sussex. More than 91 per cent of businesses in the county that serve or sell food have a rating of four or more.

THe Food Standards Agency has just finished a consultation into the prospect of bringing England into line with Wales and Northern Ireland by making the display of food hygiene ratings compulsory.

Alastair McAloon, a senior agent at NFU Mutual at Pulborough, said: "In advance of legislation changes, all business owners should prioritise their food hygiene plans and processes, acting now to ensure that they have considered all hygiene and paperwork aspects rated by their local authority including cleanliness, structure and confidence in management, to ensure a continued rating of four or five for the day an inspector calls."

CLASSES for young children are being started by a martial arts club in Bognor Regis.

Strike Taekwondo is launching the sessions from 5.45pm to 6.15pm on Wednesdays for those aged from three to five years.

THe classes take place at the club's usual meeting place of West Meads Community Hall at THe Precinct.

THey will provide an ideal introduction to martial arts for younger children and provide a chance to learn an Olympic sport. THey will also benefit from boosting their confidence by mastering the ancient technique.

I LOVE Valentine's Day. My ‘better half’ thinks its commercial rubbish, which may be the same as many people's view of Valentine's Day. BUT I LOVE IT! Any excuse to be spoilt, take a break and indulge in a bit of romance is gratefully received, thank you very much!

When you first fall ‘in love’ and you get that feeling of not being able to breathe, you're singing out loud in the car to all your favourite love songs and your heart literally skips a beat every time you think of that person, you also feel utterly invincible.

Yes, do you remember that feeling? Or perhaps you are experiencing it right now?

Well, what you are experiencing is oxytocin release. THis feel-good hormone makes you feel like nothing can hurt you, which is an amazing benefit!

It also increases hormones that help fight infection. So, basically, you’re boosting your immune system because you’re feeling too good and healthy to get sick. THe power of positive thinking and feeling loved and secure actually works!

So, what about cuddling? Is this good for your health? Just as it boosts your immune system, cuddling and releasing oxytocin will decrease your pain levels. Whenever your neck hurts, what do you do? Rub it, right?

Even simple touches like that release enough oxytocin to make you feel better, so imagine the effect cuddling has. Even nonerotic touch can release dopamine, which is a hormone that increases sexual desire.

Getting a loving hug or massage from your partner after a long day can often lead to more pleasure, which is a great stress reliever and also helps to keep you physically trim.

What more could you want! It’s a win-win for both of you!

Oxytocin also inspires positive thinking. It helps you have an optimistic outlook on the world. Which, for example, means when you get a hug as you arrive at a party, where you only know one person, you’re going to feel happier and more social going in. You’ll feel like you can charm everyone at the party.

And with oxytocin coursing through your system, you will! It’s obvious by now, right?

Oxytocin is an amazing natural hormone that has so many benefits for the human body. It’s only natural that all these positive effects are going to release stress. You’re feeling more connected with your partner, you’re feeling confident in social situations, your immune system is stronger, so what do you have to be stressed about?

You have a great, cuddle-filled, loving life.

Enjoy it! Can cuddling reduce your risk of heart disease? Look at it this way...less stress, less anxiety, lower blood pressure and lower risk of heart disease.

Wines from Down Under are on top for value Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

JANUARY is waist-reduction time for some, but February is wine-reduction time (hurrah!) courtesy of dear old M&S with their current offer of 25 per cent off six bottles, an offer to warm the cockles of our hearts in bleak midwinter!

THe first offer to allure me was the 2016 Pheasant Gully Sémillon Chardonnay from South Eastern Australia.

THe Sémillon grape originates from the Bordeaux region and is famous for its role in producing dessert wine of the quality of Sauternes.

Ripe fruits with mango and papaya to the fore, well balanced with a creamy texture - this wine is a pleasant little number and a good example of the peculiarly Australian mix of Sémillon and Chardonnay.

It is worth noting that there are 28, 200 acres of Sémillon in Bordeaux and Bergerac and 15,500 acres in South Australia, Western Australia and Hunter Valley with its unique climate.

For a mere £4.50, if part of six, this wine ticks a lot of taste boxes!

At a reduced price of circa £6.13 the Viñalta Chardonnay has strong peach flavours and a lingering taste, being both flavoursome with a high alcohol content and provenance from Mendoza in Argentina - worth a punt!

At an even more competitive £6, if part of six bottles, the Kaituna Hills 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, caught my eye, partly given its provenance from the Marlborough region situated at the north eastern tip of the South Island, whose dry, sunny region produces circa three quarters of all New Zealand wine.

THis example is pungent, zesty, aromatic and intense Sauvignon Blanc with greengage and gooseberry concentrated fruit flavours and a veritable gem, in my humble opinion! My wine of the week by a country kilometre (well, we still are in the EU, irrespective of the volition of a good few!)

A Mâcon-Villages Uchizy, if part of six bottles, on offer for under £9, has good apple and citrus flavours and essence of cream and cream soda and with its balanced acidity is a well-crafted wine and one worth trying at this price.

Back to the noble grape, Ranjit from the Chichester M&S store suggested that I should sample the

Weather Station 2016 Malbec from South Africa and I was surprised to learn that Malbec has been planted there since the 1920s and furthermore very pleased with the quality of this dry, smooth wine sporting a good nose.

Two of these bottles amounted to £12, but as part of six, they were reduced further to under £5, rendering it a veritable bargain!

A similar offer is available for the 2016 Pheasant Gully Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon which exudes spice, tobacco and a hint of leather with soft dark fruit flavours with an earthy element culminating in a smooth finishlike its white wine counterpart worthy of your attention!

Another attractive offer at £5.25, if part of six, is a Tapa Roja 2015 Vecla, which is delectably aromatic with light cherry and plum fruit flavours and hints of tea, leather and lavender and a no-brainer given the current offer!

My final selection was the 2012 Barolo Peironte full of roast plum flavours and firm tannins and at an offer price, if part of six bottles, of under £15, a decent Barolo which could adorn any restaurant menu and a joy to behold and ultimately consume!

Top marks, M&S!

PAN ROASTED DUCK BREASTS WITH RASPBERRY SAUCE INGREDIENTS • 4 duck breast fillets • 2 teaspoons sea salt • 4 teaspoons demerara sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 100ml (4 fl oz) red wine • 4 tablespoons crème de cassis liqueur • 1 teaspoon cornflour • 100g (4 oz) raspberries

Total time: 50 mins Serves: 4

METHOD 1. Use a knife to score the duck breasts through the skin and fat but not all the way through to the meat.

2. Heat a large heavy frying pan on medium high.

Fry the duck breasts skin side down, until the skin browns and fat is released, about 10 minutes.

Remove the breasts from the pan, and pour off most of the fat.

3. Mix the sea salt, cinnamon and demerara sugar together and sprinkle over the skin of the duck. Return breasts

to pan, and fry skin side up for another 10 minutes, or until desired doneness.

Turn over once and sprinkle with more of the sugar mixture, and cook 1 minute more. Remove breasts from pan and allow to rest.

4. Mix together the red wine, crème de cassis and cornflour in a small bowl. Pour into the pan, and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened.

Add raspberries, and simmer for another minute until heated through.

5.

Slice the duck breasts thinly, pour a little sauce over the top, and serve warm.

Tip: Alternatively, you can grill the duck breasts skin side up with the sugar mixture sprinkled over top until the sugar begins to caramelise, about 1 minute.

Community News & Views My Sisters' House WELCOME to our latest column provided

by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre.

THese columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

AN £80m project to redevelop a series of key sites in Bognor Regis has been resoundingly rejected. Arun District Council’s development control committee turned down the Sir Richard Hotham Project proposals by 11 votes to one, with one abstention, last Wednesday.

OK, so who is confused ? I admit that I almost turn a blind eye when any talk of regeneration pops up – it is not a lack of interest, but a feeling of ‘I do not know enough about the subject so best stay quiet’sort of feeling.

In refusing the scheme, councillors said that the benefits did not outweigh its ‘failure’ to achieve ‘sufficient design excellence’, along with concerns about the level of car parking.

Committee vice-chairman Cllr Dawn Hall said: “I think Bognor Regis deserves perfection and that is what we have got to hold out for. THis design is not good enough.”

THe plans sought to replace the Regis Centre with more than 6,000 square metres of commercial space, a 64-bedroom hotel and 192 flats, along with a new boardwalk and plaza at Place St Maur.

A 1,100-seat theatre and conference facility and a 48-bedroom hotel was proposed for the Hothamton car park. THe former Esplanade THeatre site would also be converted into a restaurant, with a relocation for the skatepark next to the pier.

THe Sir Richard Hotham Project has the right of appeal against this decision and can submit a revised proposal.

Now am I being totally pessimistic? - But how many people in Bognor Regis care enough to listen, read or voice their ideas or comments? Or how many people actually understand where the £80m is coming from? Who is the deciding body? What other plans are in the cooking pot?

I do recollect some pop up displays and have seen consultation documents but I remain somewhat confused and puzzled as to why this continues without solution? If you look back you will see ‘regeneration’ and ‘Bognor Regis’ has been in the press for some 30 years!

Meanwhile, some small but effective things happen- such as the delightful imagery that has been placed in THe Arcade vacant windows. Now I know the negative people out there will say ‘be much better to get the shops rented out’ but of course we all know that it is beyond local influence – the big brother of Zurich remains steadfast in their inability to communicate, to let a community asset demise, to charge impossible staggering rents and to not be at all bothered about the impact of such a gateway to the High Street from the beach for tourists.

I love the old photographs of the men building THe Arcade in the 1920s and no-one can argue the attractiveness of the building in its heyday.

Please can we have a common sense – clear – SMART (specific, measured, achievable, realistic and timed) targeted approach to this issue and just get on with it!

A CHEQUE for £7,481 has been presented to Bognor Boxing Club after a sell-out occasion.

Dave Larner, of the club, pictured above left, received the donation from Bognor Regis Rotary Club president Malcolm Ridley to reflect the success of the town's latest annual charity boxing dinner.

THe presentation was also attended by organising committee members Dave Dear and Peter Stemp and several boxers from the club.

THe 33rd dinner took place last November at Butlin's and attracted some 320 diners and 100 standing spectators ensured a great atmosphere.

A WELL-ATTENDED event took place at the Friends Meeting House in Chichester last Sunday to mark the life and work of Bishop George Bell.

THe information evening is aimed at encouraging volunteers to become trustees of the organisations and put their skills and enthusiasm to good use.

It is being held by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester from 5.30 to 7.30pm on March 20 at THe Loft at THe Body Shop, Watermead, Littlehampton.

Inspiring individuals will be present to pass on details of their experiences helping various charities and voluntary groups thrive and perform their essential roles in the community.

THey will also explain how they have acquired new skills and increased their knowledge pf the voluntary sector as trustees.

Sue Holmes, a trustee of VAAC, said: "In our working lives, we develop so many skills. It's nice to be able to keep using those skills and using them in a way which supports local groups and charities who provide so many services in our communities.

"We might not be able to give financial support to these groups but we can give some of our time.

"As a trustee, I am a member of a team. On my own, I might not be able to change things but as a trustee - with others - I really can make a difference to those who need support in my local community."

ONE of the world's finest bridge players gave a masterclass in the card game in aid of the Aldingbourne Trust.

Andrew Robs has been a mainstay of the England team for more than 25 is a previous winner of the World Junior Championships and the European Championships.

As a writer, he is most famous for his daily column in The Times.

One hundred guests of the Aldingbourne Trust were delighted to benefit from some of Andrew's experience and knowledge in his visit to Boxgrove Village Hall.

THe event raised £5,000 for the trust. Fundraising manager Abigail Rowe said: "It was an amazing event and having Andrew guide us through the game was fantastic as well as raising £5,000 for the trust which will make such a difference."

One guest on the day described it as a really fun and informative day with Andrew like a 'magician'.

THe trust will put the money towards the cost of the new visitor centre at its Aldingbourne Country Centre north of the A2 THe new centre will enable the charity to support more people with learning disabilities in training and employment within their social enterprises at the country centre.

By Sofia Hill, placement student at The Novium Museum THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester is our city’s university which has origins that can be traced back to the early 1800’s.

Bishop's Training College, for training schoolmasters, was established in April, 1839, in memory of Bishop William Otter – the City’s Bishop who had a particular interest in promoting education.

In October, 1850, the training college moved sites and was renamed Bishop Otter College.

THe buildings still stand at the university today, enriching the campus with history.

In 1873, the college became a training college for women due to a campaign by Louisa Hubbard to encourage the acceptance of women as teachers.

THe college remained women-only until 1957, when male students were then

introduced.

THroughout the Second World War, in 1942, the RAF commandeered the Bishop Otter College.

Staff and students were evacuated to Stockwell College, Bromley.

A lecture room on the Bishop Otter campus became the operations room of RAF Tangmere and it would play a vital role in the D-Day landings in 1944, controlling squadrons of fighter planes involved.

THe Bognor Regis College of Education was founded in 1946 as an emergency teacher training college for men and women due to a shortage of teachers after the Second World War. THe Bognor Regis College and Bishop Otter College merged in 1977 to form the West

In 1873, the college became a training college for women.

Sussex Institution for Higher Education – more commonly known as WSIHE. THe name was then changed in 1995 to represent the identity and location of the university becoming the Chichester Institute for Higher Education.

In 1999, the name was changed to the University College Chichester as a result of becoming an institution with degree awarding powers in its own right.

In October, 2005, the university’s title was

changed one final time to the University of Chichester after being approved by the Privy Council.

THe university currently has 14 different departments of study, including the Institute for Education, Institute of Sport, History, Arts and many more.

Chi flying high after tackling Sutton & PostSport Epsom to make it three wins in a row Tim Ridgway Rugby sport@sussexpost.com CHI are flying at last - and after a season full of relegation fears, Rob Lawrence's side have mid table in their sights.

THe Blues continued their fine form last week, notching up a bonus point win away in a 36-20 win at Sutton & Epsom.

THat made it three wins in a row for the Oaklands Park side, lifting then to tenth and clear of the relegation zone of National League THree London and South East division.

Next up for the Blues is a trip to third-bottom Southend tomorrow (3pm). A win then, and Chi could propel themselves to eighth in the 14-team division.

Speaking after the Sutton win, Roger Gould, the club's press officer, said: "It was another very good performance by the Blues who gained their third consecutive win, first double of the season and a bonus point.

"As against Hertford, they stuck to their attacking guns in a highly entertaining game between well matched teams.

"THe five points moved them up one place

in the league and they are hot on the heels of both Guildford and Sutton."

Chi were fast out of the traps, and despite conceding an early penalty, it was the Blues who scored the first try, Chris Johnson playing a little football before scoring left of the posts.

Full back Jack Maslen then bagged a second, after forcing the overlap.

But Sutton fought back and at the break it was 13-12 to the home side.

Lawrence's side returned to the field with fire in their bellies, with Harry Seaman and then Richard Adams scoring from a long way out. Sutton came back at them with two superb tries to make it 30-24.

But the Blues never gave up. And after mounting a number of drives, it was left to Aaron Davies to touch down from a five metre pushover.

THen, with time ticking down, Renwick again showed his pace, making a clean break and running in from 30 metres out to score Chi's sixth try of the day and seal the win. It was only their second away win of the season, a number the Blues will be keen to add to in Essex tomorrow.

THE 2017 Star Darts season will be starting soon. Before the date for the AGM is announced, the league would like to know if last year's teams, or any new teams, would like to enter this year.

DRAGONFLYERS trampolinists are jumping to new heights this year after more than a dozen bounced themselves to regional success.

THe Bognor Regis club is making a name for itself as one of the best in the country for aerial gymnastics.

THat reputation was strengthened when 14 members, six of them new performers, were among the 350 performers at the regional national development competition in Milton Keynes.

Everyone was hopeful of gaining a national qualification score and securing a place at the regional finals.

By the end of the day, 12 flyers gained those scores.

Speaking after the event, coach Linda O'Leary said: "With the Oxford qualifying

event still to come and more new flyers participating in their first trampoline competition, the club is hoping to exceed last year's figure for the number of performers making finals and earning the right to jump off for a place in the regional team.

"Dragonflyers are certainly gaining in strength as we increase the number of undernine performers and male competitors."

Among those to get gold at the event were Anya Johnston, Ellie Morton, William Forden, Manon Bailey and Rosie Budge.

Silver medals were awarded to Izzy Hauxwell and Sofija Kalnicenko Libby Morton, Jenna Partridge and Budge, this time in the NDP 5 category, achieved Bronze.

A special mention also must be made for Lucy Hijmans, who finished fourth in NDP 5.

Selsey look to banish the winter blues with third successive win

SELSEY are aiming to register three wins on the trot for the first time this season as they take on mid-table rivals Southwick at home tomorrow (3pm).

A poor run of form around Christmas saw Steve Bailey's side banished to the bottom half of SCFL Division One. But, the Blues bucked up their ideas and followed up a stunning 4-1 away win at promotion challengers Little Common with a 3-2 win against Storrington on Saturday.

Joe Clarke scored twice early on before Ben Mepham sealed the victory with a third 15 minutes from time.

THat win propelled Selsey up to eighth and within a chance of a top six finish.

If they are to do that they must make the most of their matches at the Bunn Leisure Stadium, starting tomorrow against Southwick.

THe visitors sit one place below the Blues having played four more games.

THe Wickers are in good form though, having lost just once in six in all competitions.

Selsey will be hoping to repeat their form earlier in the season when they beat Southwick 4-2 away from home.

Chi unbeaten run continues Pagham chief eyes up silverware Ne

CHICHESTER City's remarkable unbeaten league run rolls on - after the Lillywhites smashed five past relegation contenders Worthing United.

In what was an excellent team performance, goals from Ellis Martin, Max THoms, Kieran Hartley and Scott Jones, as well as an own goal, contributed to the 5-0 victory.

THeir task was made easier with the dismissal of United defender Joe Smith as time ticked down.

THat win took Chi to within seven points of top spot.

With just over two months of the season to go, the green and whites have still only lost just once in the SCFL Premier to league leaders Shoreham at the start of September.

Since then, Miles Rutherford's side have forgotten that losing feeling, winning 14 and drawing five to take them up to third in the SCFL Premier.

THey will look to continue that tomorrow, when they welcome Hassocks to Oaklands Park (3pm).

THe visitors are another side

at the wrong end of the table and have won just once in six matches.

THen it's on the road to Newhaven on Tuesday night (7.45pm) to play a side who are always dangerous but who Chi have already beaten twice in three encouters so far this season.

Rutherford has warned that his side are yet to hit top form.

But with a number of key players set to be going away in the coming weeks, he admits it will be tough for the Lillywhites to maintain their form and position.

Elsewhere, and in the West Sussex Premier League, bad weather put paid to most teams' attempts to play.

THe only game that survived the rain was a Bognor derby, which saw Newtown Villa beat Predators 3-0.

Villa are due to host Hunston CC at Jubilee Playing Fields (2pm).

League leaders Nyetimber Pirates are without a scheduled league game but are due to travel to Arun Vale, the scene of the side's first ever match seven years ago.

Recent history is with the Pagham too, with the last meeting of the two sides at the Haven Centre this season seeing Bennett's side chalk up a 3-0 win. Shea admitted that the cup is always a different type of game, but he was hopeful everyone involved with the club would be celebrating tomorrow evening He said: "It's what we all work for. We are all volunteers and like any club we all strive for silverware. THat means we are succeeding on and off the pitch "Winning something was always a target at the start of the season and hopefully it will all come good tomorrow to keep that dream alive."

THe Lions will follow up tomorrow's cup semi-final with a rescheduled match against Peacehaven and Telscombe in the league at Nyetimber Lane on Wednesday (7.30pm).

Sids and Bosham all set for cup semi-final THEY'VE been battling it out all season in the league - and now Sidlesham and Bosham could be facing off against each other in a cup final.

THe two local rivals have been leading the way all season in SCFL Division Two, with the Robins of Bosham sitting top since week one.

Chasing hard though are Sidlesham, who in recent weeks have cut the gap to just six points.

Tomorrow, both sides go into semi-final matches of the Sussex Intermediate Cup knowing that if both win then they will facing each other in a battle for silverware.

Sidlesham travel to Cowfold (1.30pm) with arguably the easier task. However, they will have to do it after not playing last weekend due to a postponement.

Pearce said: "We are expecting a tough game, especially after they beat Jarvis Brook in the last round. It will be nice to reach a final, though, as it always gives you something to look forward to at the end of a long season."

Bosham took advantage of the postponement to extend the gap between the two sides to nine points.

A Bradley Miles strike secured a 1-0 win against Westfield, meaning the Robins returned from the longest trip of the season with three points.

All eyes this weekend though will be on the cup, with Andy Probee's side travelling to Roffey (1.30pm).

THe home side have only played three times in the last two months but are one of the better teams in the SCFL Division Two.

Bognor out to extend five point lead by taming FA Trophy fliers Next Game

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com THE Rocks will need to overcome a familiar foe if they are to extend their lead at the top of the Ryman Premier.

Bognor are currently five points clear after picking up four points from six in the last week.

THeir promotion push has been boosted with nearest challengers Needham Market and Havant losing on Saturday while fourthplaced Leiston's match was postponed.

Next up for the Rocks is Dulwich Hamlet, the team that dumped them out of the promotion play-offs last season.

Manager Jamie Howell believes this familiarity will mean his side will be up for the challenge at home tomorrow (3pm).

Speaking to THe Post, Howell said: "We will go into the match confidently. We are on a good run of form, and I've been pleased with what we are doing. THey are an excellent team and always will challenge us. THey know us well and we know them well and I'm looking forward to the game."

Dulwich are currently sitting ninth in the 24 team division and in excellent form, losing just once in ten in all competitions.

Town 5-2 to take them into the quarter finals of the FA Trophy.

Away from home, they have been strong losing just twice in 15 attempts.

And, as if Rocks fans need reminding, the team from south London beat Bognor three times last season - including that injury time defeat in the playoffs ten months ago.

Howell said: "I'm not surprised at their away form as they are very quick on the counter and defensively very good.

"With those two combined they are set up to be a good counter-attacking team so it doesn't surprise me they are winning and drawing away from home.

"THey did beat us three times, including in the playoffs last season, but I thought we played very well up there earlier this year when we won 3-1. Historically, we do have a good record against them."

Bognor go into the match having banished the memory of the surprise defeat to bottom club Grays Athletic on the last weekend of January.

THe Rocks came away from a trip to Harrow Borough with all three points after Doug Tuck scored the only goal on the hour mark. THat was followed up by another trip to the capital on Tuesday night, this time to Hendon. Chad Field and Elijah Adebayo put the Rocks 2-1 up but a late strike for the home side meant Bognor had to settle for a point

Free-flowing football with an emphasis on attack - tick; a promotion push - tick; challenging for cup success - tick. And all with a small squad - double tick.

Well, this time round there is an anomaly in that run of things - and it is not a big cause for concern. For once, the management team of Jamie Howell and Darin Kilpatrick have a full squad which gives them plenty of options for the run-in ahead.

Going in to the match against Dulwich this weekend, the Rocks are set to be without Alex Parsons and Dan Beck. Gary Charman (bruised ribs) is also a doubt.

Normally that would have led to a shakeup and players being asked to play out of position. But, this year, Howell has plenty of options to chose from.

THose options were boosted on Monday night with the return of young Irish starlet Dylan Barnett on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion for the rest of the season.

Howell said: "We are delighted to have him

back in with us. He was great for us at Hendon on Tuesday.

"It's open ended at the present moment and we will see what happens with both Dylan and with Brighton. THe more that he plays that's better for him."

One player unlikely to return is Elijah Adebayo, whose one month loan from

Fulham ended after the Hendon match.

THe young target man signed off in style, scoring a goal to take his tally for the Rocks to five goals in seven games.

Howell said this would likely result in a recall for Jimmy Wild up-front although he hinted he may be looking at other potential options.

WELL it's been an unusual couple of weeks for the Rocks.

After such a performance as the 5-0 win over at Canvey away the previous Saturday, Bognor had to take on the next (and rock-bottom) club, Grays Athletic at home the next Saturday.

I knew we were in for a test and so it proved.

Grays were clearly up for this game and as is the common theme for the Rocks lately, we went a goal down early on.

THe lads did well to battle back but this wasn’t until the 85th minute through James Fraser.

To be honest, I was thinking at that time that we would be lucky to take the draw but we were punished at the end when we failed to clear our lines.

All credit where it's due to Grays - they are struggling at the bottom and performed away from home against the in-form team at the top.

THis is typical football.

THeir players were listening to ‘All the Way Up’ by Fat Joe and Remy Ma in the dressing room after.

THey are clearly very confident they can climb out of the bottom four.

Having being unbeaten since December 3 before that game, something had to give, and so it showed.

So the following match saw us travel to Burgess Hill on the following Tuesday.

I decided not to travel because of the poor weather and thought it might be called off. Unfortunately, it was.

It wasn’t postponed until around 15 minutes before kick off.

Most, if not all, of the fans went to this match and I felt sorry for those who did, only to be told that the match was off.

THey should have done a pitch inspection and used common sense at around 5pm so that everyone was informed in advance.

Some people travelled for hours to see that game and it is just not on for players, the fans and officials for the match to be called off, especially when it was very clear from the start that any football would have been a long shot.

I remember this happening at Lancing’s ground in the semi-final of the Sussex Senior Cup a few years back when a sudden deluge of rain hit the centre circle and the game, again around 15 minutes before, had to be postponed.

At least then it was a sudden downpour, rather than constant rain, which we had at Burgess Hill. We all move on though.

And so with no game midweek, it was on to Saturday and I went on the coach to Harrow Borough with the BRTFC faithful.

It was a packed coach subsidised by the Supporters Club.

It was another tough fixture for Bognor and Harrow often threatened.

But the team made them pay when Doug Tuck got into space to smash it into the net in the second half. Well done Tucky!

THe midfielder has received some criticism recently but I think he does a lot for the team.

Every away game I go to - all of the officials and journalists think he’s a tidy player.

It was great to see the players celebrate with him afterwards, too.

Unfortunately, Rocks stalwart David Robinson’s new siren broke right on cue during the celebrations!

Hope it worked at Hendon Dave!

As you can tell, I am writing this on the eve of our match away to Hendon which I didn’t attend.

We lost 2-0 to them earlier in the season at Nyewood Lane so saw this as another tough fixture.

Are there any easy ones this year? I think not.

As it was, the lads managed a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, Chad Field and Elijah Adebayo netting the goals.

Seems we let another late goal slip but I was impressed

by Hendon earlier on in the season and I think this is a good away point.

Next up is Dulwich Hamlet tomorrow at Nyewood Lane. I hope to see you all there.
