Success for village cafe

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A POPULAR cafe has been given a licence to serve alcohol despite objections from residents in the village.

THe Quarterdeck Cafe based in Northshore Shipyard, Itchenor, opened in October 2015 and has proved popular

with locals.

Now, it has been given the go ahead to serve alcohol by Chichester District Council's licensing committee.

From October to March, alcohol will be served from 10am until 9pm, with the cafe closing at 9.30pm. From April to September, the same hours will apply from Sunday to Wednesday.

On THursday, Friday and Saturday,

alcohol will be served until 11pm with the cafe closing at 11.30pm.

THe application received 52 representations - 41 against and 11 in support.

THose who objected to the application feared an increase in noise and disturbance and were worried about the safety of children playing in the area.

However, supporter Graham Colborne,

a resident and a member of Itchenor Parish Council, said: “My family and I have been regular customers of THe Quarterdeck since it opened.

"We have met many residents and dog walkers from the village at the cafe.

It operates to offer a very useful and appreciative local amenity.”

Lorry driver, 60, killed in A27 accident

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A LORRY driver was killed in an horrific crash which forced the closure of the A27 near Emsworth on Monday.

Now, Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened at around 4.15pm at the start of the rush hour.

A lorry travelling west collided with the central reservation.

It ended up on the eastbound carriageway.

Police said that no other vehicles were involved.

THe driver of the lorry, a 60-year-old man from Waterlooville, sadly died at the scene.

Inspector Stewart Goodwin said: "We are appealing to anyone who was travelling on the A27 near Chichester at around that time and saw what

happened."

THe A27 was closed in both directions while emergency services attended the scene, causing traffic chaos for hundreds of people trying to get home from work on Monday evening.

THe accident blocked the A27 between the Fishbourne roundabout in Chichester and the Emsworth junction in Emsworth in both directions.

Drivers were advised to avoid the A27 and a diversion was set up along the A259.

One lane was closed in each direction until Tuesday morning while repairs were carried out on the road.

Police are trying to piece together what caused the lorry to collide with the central reservation.

Funding spread across county FUNDING has been handed out to more than 20 worthwhile causes across West Sussex.

THe money has been awarded from West Sussex County Council’s Small Grants Fund.

THe fund was set up in order to promote the wellbeing of residents, encouraging them to connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and to give.

Up to £100,000 is available in 2016/17.

Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “Not only is the Small Grants Fund a fantastic opportunity for people to get an extra boost for their small community projects, it is an excellent way for us as a council to actively support our

communities.

“I have been inspired by the achievements of our residents within organisations all across the county.

"Without the dedication and commitment of those involved, the incredible work they do would not be possible.

“I am looking forward to hearing about and supporting even more brilliant causes as we head into the new year.”

Included in the 21 successful applications across the county are Fishbourne Pre School Ltd which received £900.

Apprentices to graduate HUNDREDS of apprentices are being urged to register by the end of January to attend this year's graduation ceremony at Chichester Cathedral.

Registration has opened for the celebrations on March 7 and is open to anyone working in a West Sussex business that completed an Advanced or Higher/degree apprenticeship during 2016.

More than 400 people completed Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships in the county in 2016 in sectors including social care, estate agency, web development and more.

Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “Last year’s graduation was such a momentous occasion as so many attended the ceremony and nearly everyone had used their apprenticeships to move forward with their careers.

“I hope the number of apprenticeships in West Sussex continues to grow. THe young people in our county have an incredibly diverse range of talents and I hope that many look to apprenticeships as the start of a bright and exciting future.”

New start for 2017

THe house hosted a health and wellbeing event called New Year New You. THe free event featured free demonstrations and taster sessions and encouraged people to learn new skills, try new hobbies and get fit.

Events manager Kim Wright said: "It's an event that promotes having a positive start to the new year, whether that was considering a new look, getting fit or retraining for a new job along with a wellbeing involvement.

"THis year we were lucky to have quite a few different organisations join us.

"It had a very nice, positive feel to it. It was nice to network with new services too."

Kim said the event is a good chance to show people what sort of things the venue can offer.

"For us it’s about getting people to visit the house and look at what fabulous facilities we have.

"We are a commercial venue now. THe best way to raise the profile of the house is to arrange events. It shows the house in a different light.

"It's a good way to show that the house can be more than just a wedding venue."

Organisations involved in the event included Chichester College, Pole Passion Fitness Chichester, Q Hair and Beauty and Chichester Wellbeing.

` Meeting about pier trust's future A PUBLIC meeting is being held next week to discuss the future of Bognor Pier Trust.

The trustees of the community interest company will be staging the session at 7pm on Thursday at The Hub in Canada Grove.

Paul Wells, the trust's chairman, said: "We will be updating members and supporters on how the trust intend to move forward as an organisation since the news that Bognor Pier Leisure Ltd did not want to progress the lottery bid last October.

"Although disappointing, the pier trust has not abandoned the pier project.

"The trust has taken time to evaluate its position and the meeting will be an opportunity to update you on how the trust looks to move forward and how it will work with the local authorities as a possible delivery arm for other projects in the town."

Defeat for call to back toilets

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) called for the loos at Blakes Road in Felpham and Sandy Road, Pagham, to be among four to be retained for permanent opening.

But his bid was defeated by 37-5 with three abstentions as Conservative-run Arun District Council voted to go ahead with the winter closures.

The sites will shut from this October 1 until Easter 2018 when they will open for the weekend only.

They will then re-open from May 1 to September 30 before another winter closure. The other two sets of conveniences affected are in Climping and Littlehampton. The impact of the closures will be monitored.

Cllr Oppler said toilets were a crucial service which the district's residents and visitors relied upon.

"The anger that has been caused stretches from one end of the district to the other. In regard to the seasonal closing of four of the toilets, which I really do oppose, it is yet another attack on local people.

"What the supporters of this proposal have forgotten is that some of these locations are popular with dog walkers, winter and summer. What are they to do?"

As well as the seasonal closures, toilets at Snooks Corner, Felpham; Shrubbs Field, Middleton; Avisford Park, Aldwick; and West Meads, Aldwick, are among a further six which could also close.

Arun's officers will spend the next year exploring the feasibility of a community toilet scheme to enable alternative loos to be opened nearby for the public. A £500 annual grant will be offered to any property owner who takes part.

Cllr Paul Dendle, the council's member in charge of public toilets, said: "I absolutely disagree with what the Lib Dems are doing here.

"We need to improve our toilets, which is what this strategy is all about."

Arun will be spending £200,000 in each of the next three financial years on creating better toilets.

A large feature of that will be a new toilet block on Bognor Regis seafront to replace the two existing underground sites opposite the pier and Walton Road.

The council opts to run toilets rather than having to operate them by law as it does some other services.

Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham W) said public toilets needed to be run jointly between Arun and parish and town councils as they had in recent years.

"If everyone plays their part, it's going to become a partnership again. It's up to parishes now to step up as well as the town councils.

"If that works, the toilets will remain open all year, rather than just part of the year. But it takes two to tango."

Opponents of housing urged to attend session HOMES campaigners in Pagham are hosting events to help their protests.

Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement is staging coffee mornings and letter-writing sessions on the next two Saturdays.

Its members hope for a large turnout of supporters opposed to two planning applications for up to 650 homes on two sites in the parish.

Albert Homer, one of PAGAM's founders, said: "We will assist people by showing them how to address their letters and we will make sure they get to Arun District Council's planning

before the due date.

"But we would prefer the comments people make are their own words."

The first event takes place from 10am-midday tomorrow at Pagham United Reformed Church (St Ninian's) in Pagham Road.

It will be followed by the second session at the same time and place.

As reported, Taylor Wimpey has asked Arun for planning permission for 250 homes on farmland north of Sefter Road. This proposal was swiftly followed by Hanbury Properties' plan for 400 homes south of Summer Lane.

Funding to support students affected by devastating fire

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PUPILS, parents and staff in Selsey will be offered counselling following the disastrous fire at their school last summer.

THanks to Big Lottery funding, charity Youth Dream has been awarded £9,500 to run counselling sessions for local people who have been impacted by the loss of THe Academy Selsey.

THe school was largely destroyed by a huge fire last August. Students are currently learning in temporary buildings.

THere will be support for pupils, parents and staff through the period of uncertainty and transition whilst their new school is being rebuilt.

Chairman of Youth Dream Mike Nicholls said: "We are delighted to have secured this funding. We are running a regular programme in support of the academy students.

"We shall use the money to extend and further these activities at lunchtime, after school and during school hours.

"As you can imagine, most of the students have been affected in one way or another by the fire.

"So we are going to be laying on some drop-in sessions for pupils, parents and members of the community who want to chat about things that have been affected by the fire.

"At the time it was a very public event for the whole of the community. In a place like Selsey we have got lots of adults who went to the school when they were children. We have found that all corners of the community talk about their memories of the school and the effect that the fire had on them.

"It's all still a little bit raw and delicate but we work very closely with the school. THis is just another attempt to do something to assist with the situation."

Mr Nicholls also said Youth Dream is working with an organisation called Arts Dream to create a project about the history of the school.

He added: "We want to try and collect community memorabilia from the 50 year history of the school before it was burnt down to put together a collage of memories. THe extent to which we can do that is dependent as always on funding."

Mr Nicholls said Arts Dream is still putting together funding for the project at this stage. Youth Dream offers a range of youth services.

THey work very closely with schools, local government, and the medical and social services, as well as clubs and youth services, the Scouts, football and cricket clubs.

Other recipients of the Big Lottery funding include Jessie Younghusband Primary School which will get £10,000.

THis funding will be used to refurbish an old classroom to provide a space which is suitable for pastoral groups and

community activities.

It will support the provision of play therapy sessions, before and after school clubs and activities for vulnerable children, the PTA and the community.

Meanwhile, St Mary's Church in

Apuldrum will received £2,000 to carry out a feasibility study and consult with the community about the installation of a car park and access lane next to the church.

Nick Gibb to meet heads THE minister for schools has agreed to meet MP's and headteachers from across West Sussex to discuss future funding.

It comes as leaders continue to fight for fairer funding for school children across the county.

Nick Gibb will meet with leaders at the Department for Education offices in London on Wednesday, February 1.

In a statement, WorthLess West Sussex said: "School leaders are pleased that the schools’ minister Nick Gibb MP has agreed to meet local MPs and representative headteachers from across West Sussex on Wednesday February 1 at the DfE. "We are grateful to our representatives for organising this important opportunity to further discuss current and future school funding.

"We hope very much that the meeting will lead to meaningful solutions - both for the upcoming financial year and the medium term - to the funding crisis that is engulfing our schools."

Meanwhile, the Department for Education has rolled out a consultation about the upcoming National Funding Formula.

It is due to run until Wednesday, March 22.

Police encourage residents to safely dispose of knives for national initiative POLICE in Sussex are supporting a national initiative to tackle knife crime.

THe surrender is part of a national drive to raise awareness of people who have lost their lives to knife crime.

THe knifes will be given to the British Ironwork Centre and used in a 20 foot tall angel in memory of those whose lives have been tragically lost to knife crime.

Chief Inspector Bruce Mathews said: "THankfully knife crime isn't generally a problem in Sussex, this surrender will give members of the public the opportunity to

dispose of any knives without prosecution.

"If you possess a potentially dangerous knife, please take this opportunity to get rid of your knife safely and anonymously."

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: "I am pleased to hear that Sussex Police will be offering knife bins across Sussex as part of the national knife surrender.

"THe sculpture will be a very poignant reminder to us all of the victims of knife crime and it's vital that we continue to raise awareness of the extremely serious consequences of carrying a knife."

Diana Fawcett added: "I am a villager.

I have lived here a very long time. I use this cafe on a regular basis.

"THe cafe provides a useful alternative especially for single women or people on their own."

Chris Fox was representing around 20 people in the community who objected to the application.

Many people who objected lived outside the area, as far afield as London and Cambridge.

He said: “Chichester Harbour is a very special place. I grew up here, I know it well.

“Itchenor is a very peaceful village with around 200 homes much enjoyed by residents and visitors for its tranquility.

“THis is the wrong application in the wrong place.

“THe cafe is already offering a selection of drinks on a regular basis. It’s all about alcohol – it’s not about food. THis is being promoted as a bar.

“THis is a peaceful area. It is much enjoyed for its tranquillity.

“THe sale of alcohol will cause increased noise day and night.”

But applicant Tim Sturton-Davies said: “Since opening, the Quarterdeck has been a welcome addition to the village, popular with locals, residents of surrounding areas and visitors to the area.

"As a coffee shop, the need for items we currently sell ends at 5pm when people stop thinking about coffee and cake.

"Having been open for over a year and

based on feedback from customers, the option to sell alcohol is a natural progression to enable me to grow my business and supply what there is clearly a demand for."

During December and January, the cafe hosted three temporary events where alcohol was sold, which all proved to be a success.

"I am not trying to attract the masses to come and drink at THe Quarterdeck," Mr Sturton-Davies added.

“It will be a place where you can come and enjoy a quiet drink in the relaxed and friendly environment that THe Quarterdeck has come to be known for.

"I hope to be able to offer something different to the village pub and the sailing club – something that will draw people to the area.”

Mr Sturton-Davies added that the extended opening hours means he will be able to offer employment opportunities which will benefit the local economy.

Both Sussex Police and Chichester Harbour Conservancy had originally objected to the application.

But the owner reached an agreement with both of them in terms of the hours of operation.

Granting the licence means the cafe can now offer beer, wine and spirits alongside its usual cakes, sandwiches, snacks and hot drinks.

As part of the application, the owner must now fit an internal and external CCTV system, set up a designated smoking area and make use of the THink 25 policy.

Staff must also ensure music is generally restricted to background levels with noise levels being monitored by staff to ensure that there is no disturbance to neighbours.

Drama and theatre classes to begin for adults across the city KEEN actors and actresses are being invited to learn more about drama and theatre.

A new drama class at the New Park Centre's Jubilee Hall is running every THursday until March 30. THe sessions run from 1.15pm until 3.15pm.

It is a practical class where people engage in a variety of different drama activities. THe first part of the term will focus on improvisation, and the second half will concentrate on script.

A few places remain for this class

for adults aged 18 or over. It costs £80 for the entire course. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience.

THe class is led by Kim Hope, who has had many years of experience running drama workshops in the UK, in Swaziland and in South Africa.

Brain tumour sufferer supports campaign for cancer research

Photographer talk in city A TALK about the lives and work of two of the county’s most important photographers will take place in Chichester.

Archivist Nichola Court will talk about the collections of the Petworth-based professional photographer George Garland, who worked from the 1920s up to his death in 1978, and the hithertounknown amateur photographer John Fletcher, who lived in Bognor and was active from the 1880s until his death in 1915.

THere will be an opportunity to view original material from the archive.

West Sussex Record Office will host the talk on Tuesday, January 31 at 7pm.

Tumour Charity's new campaign as one of their young ambassadors.

He said: "My work as a young ambassador has allowed me to meet with young people and their families around the UK to look at how we can move forward in the fight against brain tumours.

“As one of the biggest cancer killers of the under 40's, we need to start investing in this area of cancer research as a major priority, but this starts with recognising the signs first.”

THe HeadSmart campaign, which includes a website as well as the symptoms cards, lists the warning signs of a brain tumour in babies, children and teenagers.

HeadSmart is being formally relaunched at the Royal College of General Practitioners in London, where doctors will take part in a workshop to learn about the signs and symptoms of childhood brain tumours.

HeadSmart highlights potential brain tumour symptoms. THese include vomiting, balance problems and unusual eye movements.

Newly-added symptoms include increasing head circumference in under-fives and loss of vision across all age groups. HeadSmart is run as a partnership between THe Brain Tumour Charity, THe Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A STUDENT from the University of Chichester who has been fighting a brain tumour since he was three-years-old is supporting a new campaign.

Chandos Green, originally from Bournemouth, was diagnosed in 1998 with a pilocytic astrocytoma.

He has since had three major operations at the age of three, six and 19. He has experienced headaches, involuntary movements and speech impairment.

Chandos, 21, said: "Living with a brain tumour is difficult if I am honest. Some days my symptoms are a lot worse than others. Even though the majority of my tumour is gone, I still struggle.

"Some days I go to bed wishing and praying that I'll wake up with no disability or tumour.

"I think my motivation has been my friends and family who have been my lifeline for encouraging me to not give up or give in. As I say, some days are harder than others and my anxiety can get worse on these days so to have them there is a massive help.

"I am passionate about this campaign as my diagnosis took a while after first getting the symptoms and I would like to see this reduce the amount of time and effects of brain tumours for other young people and adults."

Train service to resume say firm

SOUTHERN Rail has announced it is to restore a "full train service" from Tuesday after a union suspended industrial action, the rail firm has confirmed.

THe train drivers' union Aslef had been due to strike for three days on January 24, 25 and 27, but it has called off the walkouts.

THe rail operator has said this week's rosters had already been issued and that given the timescales, it would not be possible to reintroduce a full timetable until Tuesday.

Passenger services director Angie Doll said there would still be disruption next Monday.

She said: "Due to the changes we've now fully rolled out, we're now able to run more services on more routes serving more passengers and ultimately we'll have fewer cancellations and delays."

She said an extra 200 trains would run next Monday - the same day as a conductors' strike by the RMT union.

Milestone for library as it marks 50 years CHICHESTER Library is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

A series of events will be held to celebrate the golden milestone birthday.

THe library, in Tower Street, was opened on 24 January 1967.

THe locally designed and built library was purposebuilt as a public library and as the headquarters of West Sussex County Council Library Service. THe building was Grade II listed by Historic England in 2015.

It is notable for being the first public library in Britain to use a computerised issue system and a computerised library catalogue was introduced in 1973.

PEOPLE across the county are being asked to share their opinions on how best to improve services at hospitals in West Sussex.

THe quality of care provided at hospitals in Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham is continuing to improve, according to key performance data.

One measure that indicates how successful hospitals are at reducing inpatient deaths, known as the Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate or HSMR, shows Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ranked within the top 18 per cent of trusts nationwide.

Just four years ago the trust was nearly ranked in the worst performing 20 per cent of hospitals in England.

And climbing into the top 20 per cent was outlined as a key goal in the trust’s Quality Strategy 2015-2018.

Now, the NHS organisation which runs St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals in West Sussex, is reviewing its goals and asking patients, staff, stakeholders and public to help ensure its 2017-18 priorities for quality improvement are right.

Dr George Findlay, Medical Director, said: “If you live, work or spend time

in West Sussex, the quality of services provided by the hospitals in the area could affect you.

“Whether it’s emergency care, maternity care or ongoing treatment for a long-term health problem, you want your hospital to offer the best and safest care possible. Our trust already offers high quality care.

"Last year, we were rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and we are among the best performing NHS Trusts in the country.

“However, we are committed to further improving what we do for our patients and would like the community’s feedback to help shape our newly proposed Quality Priorities 2017-18.”

THe trust has outlined four key goals for the coming year that include reducing preventable mortality, avoiding harm, and improving patient experience, as well as staff engagement.

` Funding cut for voluntary group A 20 PER CENT reduction in backing for a charity which has groups around Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has been confirmed.

The cutback in cash for Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester was agreed by councillors last week.

The matter was decided without debate at Arun District Council's full meeting last Wednesday.

It reduces the grant the council will give to VAAC by just over £12,000 to £48,760 in each of the next two financial years.

Voluntary Action chairman Tony Sneller has previously warned the cut came on top of a similar reduction by West Sussex County Council.

He stated: "To mitigate the impact of this further cut, we will have to revise our services and dig even deeper into our reserves."

The six months to the end of last September saw VAAC recruit 229 volunteers for its member groups, stage ten training courses and provide one to one support for 89 organisations among its work.

f Doug Fielder at his leaving party at St Richard's Hospital

AN ALDWICK medical physicist whose invention has helped countless mothers and and babies around the world has passed away.

The funeral of Doug Fielder will be held at 1.30pm next Monday at St Richard's Church in Aldwick. He died on January 7, aged 86.

Mr Fielder introduced Britain's first commercial instrument using Doppler ultrasound to detect very early fetal heart movements and cardio-vascular studies.

His pioneering work made headlines 60 years ago and showed fetal blood flow in the human placenta for the first time.

Next, in 1970, came the first ultrasound monitor for use during labour and childbirth. Mr Fielder unveiled this to worldwide acclaim and was invited to lecture around the globe about his achievements. Both medical devices earned the company which had invested in his invention, Sonicaid, a Queen's Award to Industry for giving Britain a global lead.

Mr Fielder's enthusiasm and expertise saw him join St Richard's Hospital at Chichester in 1975 and set up its first medical physics and electronics department responsible for all medical equipment. This was followed two years later by his work evaluating the world's first 3D ultrasound scanner which he arranged to be installed at St Richard's.

He set up an ultrasound department at the hospital and demand for the scanner quickly grew. The technology has been updated and become part of everyday

medical healthcare.

Mr Fielder's wife, Doreen, 81, said: "My husband was a very gentle man. He loved his wife and he loved helping people.

"He was very modest. Women often used to come up to him when we were out to thank him for helping them."

Mr Fielder went to medical college and moved from Muswell Hill to Aldwick in 1953 next to the house where his future wife was a babysitter. They married and moved into their first home two years later where the family have remained.

He was a member of the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Acoustics.

His enquiring mind led him to give the world's first demonstration of early fetal heart movements in 1957 and blood flow in the major vessels of the body in 1961.

He said in a Sixties interview about his groundbreaking work: "It does mean that you can tell immediately whether the baby is still alive so that a girl does not have to be kept in suspense.

"It does a lot for them psychologically too. When they hear their baby's heart ticking away, the mothers beam all over their faces."

Mr Fielder was also involved in musical inventions. His proud family still have one of his patents from 1961 for 'improvements relating to guitars and like instruments'.

Mr Fielder is survived by Doreen, three children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Grant to help to change lives

Richard Hunt, pictured left and below, and Amanda Worne, will be among the presenters at the 14 sessions Saltwater Creations community interest company will hold at schools thanks to a £4,830 grant.

The donation has come from the Santander Foundation's discovery grants for projects that help disadvantaged people in communities.

Saltwater Creations' joint founder and director Juliet Stallard, 29, pictured below, who lost her partner five years ago, said: "The grant has had an immediate impact on our work.

"With the budget constraints felt by all schools in the area, the grant enables the chidlren to experience

Amanda, pictured right, has recently joined Saltwater with a remarkable life-changing story.

A traumatic cycle accident in August 2015 left her in a wheelchair. Her pure determination, hard work and remarkable positive attitude has a strong and infectious influence on everyone she meets.

Amanda was paralysed from the waist down while she was cycling on Bury Hill but she has embraced her new life.

The town council has compiled the survey to ensure the opinions of those aged 11-18 are taken into account in its review of services.

A statement by the council says: "As part of a youth provision review being carried out by Bognor Regis Town Council on behalf of a partnership of local organisations, we invite you to take part in this survey.

"We're trying to find out about activities you like in your spare time and what else you would like to see provided for your age group."

Toby's on track for trophy with layout JUNIOR railway modeller Toby Nanson made a return journey to Felpham Community College - and picked up a top trophy.

Toby followed his week of lessons at the college by taking part in last weekend's annual Bognor Regis Model Railway Club exhibition and won the Best in Show Trophy.

He was rewarded by Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon for putting his Strathmore LIP layout on display for the first time.

Toby, 14, said: "It's great to win the trophy and I'm going to put it on display at home where everyone can see it.

"I hope to carry on being a railway modeller for many years.

"I designed this layout and I built it, with help from my dad. He's always liked railway modelling and I've grown up with it."

His Strathmore LIP layout is a 00 gauge layout which measures 7.5ft X 3ft.

It is based on a fictional station in the Glasgow area and has a mixture of modern passenger and freight locomotives as the occasional diesel multiple unit and department stock.

Toby belongs to the model railway club's thriving junior section. He was one of the three of them who had layouts on show.

The section contains between 12-20 members aged 8-16 who meet regularly at the club's headquarters in the former Barnham signal box in the grounds of

Adrian Taylor, the model railway club's chairman, said the group was thriving after it had re-opened the former signal box last June.

The historic structure had been gutted in an arson attack having been removed from Barnham railway station about eight years ago.

"Our membership has virtually doubled from 30 to nearly 60 in the past two years," he said.

"The signal box is a much better meeting place than our former place at the sports and social club."

This success was reflected in the two days of the latest exhibition. Towards the end of the first day, the attendance was on course to beat the 1,200 people who

went along last year.

"It is important to us that this event is a success and we have had tremendous support from the public," said Adrian.

"People were queuing up to come in when we opened.

"Bognor Regis and its surrounding area has an amazing number of modellers who are interested in the hobby."

The exhibition featured a total of 35 stands in two halls at the college.

They included 15 layouts in various gauges and packed with a variety of rolling stock and joined by a mixture of trade stalls.

Present for the first time was Worthing and District Society of Model Engineers with its ride-on railway which delighted visitors of all ages.

Model trains are a delight for all ages A MAKE-BELIEVE railway in Slindon made its debut in Bognor Regis last weekend.

The Slindon Vale Railway, complete with Nore Wood Station, was put on show for the first time in the town's model railway exhibition.

The 16.5mm gauge layout by the South Downs Area Group of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association was packed with features based on real buildings.

Two of the buildings were inspired

by Candle Cottage in Petworth and Lavender Cottage in Bramber. The latter took 100 hours of modelling by Chris Davis to recreate in the 12ft X 2ft layout.

The shops were a replica of those in the Broadwater Green parade in Worthing and the Fairmile Cafe in Amberley was also reproduced.

Chris said it was satisfying to spend up to two years on a layout ready to put it on display for the public to enjoy.

"It's a huge range of skills you call upon.

You need to be a good woodworker and a competent electrician and metal-worker.

"You put all those skills together and try to build something. You want to be able to look at it and feel as if you can walk into it. That's the key to me."

Basing the display on a beautiful part of West Sussex combined his love of the

county and model railways, he said.

"I really like this display but I don't think any railway modeller thinks a layout is finished.

There is always somethng you want to improve."

Eight-year-old Annabelle Chapman took control of her first layout at the exhibition. She was able to gain the experience at the OO gauge Aldingbourne Central display by Bognor Regis Model Railway Club.

Annabelle, who lives in Felpham, had been looking forward to the event.

She said: "I enjoyed being in chage of the trains. It was fun. I liked seeing the trains going round and round."

Other displays included the 009 layout of Tokar by Brighon modeller Peter White, Bognor Regis junior member Daniel Nash's Alter Ego display loosely based on the First World War and the fictitious GWR branch line terminus of Walkers Hill in N gauge by Daniel Hillebrandt.

Also present was a Network Rail display which warned about the dangers of playing on railways, modelling displays

by Fareham Model Railway Club's Elliott Cowton and rail inspired paintings by talented Bognor Regis artist Eric Bobby.

SUPPORTERS of the weekly coffee mornings in West Meads have presented more funds for the town's hospital.

The latest donation saw £500 presented to Brian Knight, the chairman of the Friends of Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

This takes the total those who enjoy the social get-togethers in West Meads Community Centre to £8,700 since 2008.

One of the mornings' organisers, Louisa Freezer, said: "Every time Brian comes, he always tells us what they are spending the money they receive on.

"Also, this time, he told us pro-rata Bognor Regis x-ray department is best in the whole of the UK."

Kerry’s fitness goal Healthcare assistant helps others thanks to centre

Kerry Harwood, for example, is a healthcare assistant who works at a local nursing home with clients that suffer from advanced dementia. Many of the nursing home’s service users rely and benefit from Sensory therapies.

“One of the activities that helps those who suffer from this horrible condition and something they cherish”, says Kerry, “is the opportunity to get out into the garden”.

“I would love to make it an even better experience for them by raising money for specialist sensory equipment”.

“I have been overweight for many years so I decided it was time to tackle this once and for all and at the same time raise money for those that really need it and that in turn would keep me motivated”.

So, just before Christmas, Kerry set herself the task of losing 6 stone in weight and while doing so raise over £800 in sponsorship for the construction of a new Sensory Garden.

To help her lose weight safely and as proof of her weight loss, Kerry asked

the Arena Sports Centre to oversee her training programme and track her progress.

“I had a very exciting meeting with the manager of the Arena Sports Centre”, explained Kerry, “who was really keen to help me attain my personal and fundraising goals! I was totally blown away by their generosity and belief in my cause”.

“I had my induction and I have a lovely lady called Becky looking after me - I am sure she will kick my butt and keep me motivated!”

Kerry is now well into her January training and so far has lost 1st 0.6lbs.

Commenting on her progress Becky, reports “Kerry’s fitness, strength, stamina, flexibility and motivation is improving all the time and thanks to the support of other Arena members, who join us in our exercises, Kerry’s looking good to achieve her goals!

Tracey said: “We try to have parties like this whenever we can, in fact we have a birthday party planned for today!

“The party for Ethel and Ruby was a really lovely and beautiful day for them.”

Not only was the party attended by those at the care home, but friends and family members of the centenarians also made an appearance.

Ethel actually had around 20 members of family there.

Born in Clapham on December 20, 1916, Ethel enjoys music and singing at the home. In her youth she was a keen gardener and swimmer.

Over the festive period the staff at Chalcraft worked hard to make it a Christmas to remember for the residents by bringing the theatre to them with an unforgettable pantomime.

Staff members donned all manner of costumes for a show that the residents and their families enjoyed. Tracey herself was cast as the dashing Prince Charming!

Fun and entertainment are always a consideration at Chalcraft Hall. Once a week live music is provided by Henry the accordion player, and their activity coordinator brings quizzes, bingo, dancing, music therapy and much more to the residents who eagerly await the next visit.

Tracey explained how important this is to the home. She said: “The entertainment and activities really capture what we do here at Chalcraft. We aim to care for our residents in every way possible, and make them, as well as the staff, feel at home.”

Why do you think it is important that people regularly get their sight and hearing tested?

It is important people get both eyes and ears tested as this is a comprehensive health check as underlying conditions can be detected that the client may otherwise be unaware of.

Hearing is often ignored because people think they are managing and often are unaware of important sounds that they gradually start missing like birds singing and important parts of speech for example.

Get Stuffed at The Fat Figin the nicest possible way!

by Daniel Field “Get Stuffed” proudly proclaims a colourful poster when you enter the bright and bustling Fat Fig, and we certainly did just that, indulging in a midweek lunch for two at their café in South Street, Chichester.

A day time eaterie- open daily from 8am until 6pm and 9-5pm on Sundays, the restaurant is clearly a big favourite with both local business people and passing trade, and the place was positively buzzing with a cool friendly vibe, and the hum of convivial conversation as we walked in and placed our order.

We ordered a coffee each to start, from the Illy Range, I enjoyed a tall creamy Latte, my companion a rich thick frothy Cappuccinomost welcome on a wintry January lunchtime as an antidote to the cold weather outside.

We whiled away some time amiably chatting

and enjoying the ambience, whilst looking at the artwork , some of which is for salebrightly coloured and bejewelled Turkish Lamps and vibrant hand painted pottery, all presented in an unobtrusive way to create interest without being overwhelming and cluttered, and interspersed with wall art and greenery.

THe menu offers a comprehensive range of classic favourites, some, such as the all day breakfasts, offering an exotic Turkish twist, for example the Mediterranean breakfast offers Turkish sausage, Filo Feta and Parsley Borek with Halloumi cheese and authentic Turkish fig jam, which I vowed to try out as soon as possible.

For lunch on this occasion however, I opted for one of the blackboard specials,

the Aberdeen Angus Beefburger served in a brioche bun with side salad and chips, whilst my companion chose the ‘On Menu’ “just how Mama used to make” homemade lasagne, again served with a salad on the side.

Other Blackboard specials that day included sea bass, salmon or steak. THe menu itself offers a small but tempting selection of pasta dishes, filled jacket potatoes, salads and omelettes. THe nature of such a menu is that you know when it says ‘homemade’, it really is, and in this case the proof of the pudding was most definitely in the eating!

My burger arrived hot and resplendent with a slice of melting grilled cheese complimented with crunchy red onions and a dressed leafy side salad with a portion of chunky hot fries on the side. A lightly toasted brioche bun, encased the burger, which itself had that unique meaty fresh flavour and satisfying texture that you only get when it has been genuinely home made from scratch, moist, filling and succulent.

My companions’ lasagne was served in its own dish, with the salad on a separate plate, meaning the hot food stayed hot, and the cold food cold, which he very much appreciated, as this is not always the case. THe lasagne was four layered, and topped with cheesy sauce, the pasta soft and yielding, and the meat ragu rich with tomatoes and Italian herbs, and again, quite obviously homemade on the

premises by their own chef.

Neither of us left a single morsel, and indeed we felt well and truly ‘stuffed’ once we finally downed our cutlery.

Our friendly and helpful waitress Maria explained that the owners of the Fat Fig are Turkish and take inspiration for the food and décor from their Mediterranean roots, importing specialist ingredients where necessary, and otherwise sourcing locally.

Alongside the food menu there is a glass cabinet with a tempting selection of all manner of cakes- I would certainly call in for coffee and cake if I was out and about shopping in Chichester.

THe Fat Fig really hits the spot for casual dining in a relaxed friendly environment, with its’ light background music, friendly staff, and subtle Mediterranean overtones, coupled with superb food and coffee. It’s a great spot for a lunch time get together, with friends or colleagues, or if you just want to sink back on to the comfy couch seating, grab a coffee and a cake and use the free wifi while you take a break from the shopping or catch up with a bit of work on the go. Prices are reasonableboth our main courses were a modest £6.95 representing great value, as well as excellent quality.

I’ll be going back to try one of the magnificent all day breakfasts next time I’m in South Street, perhaps I’ll see you there?

LIDL did I know that I would be returning hither in mid-January to still be able to avail myself of the Wine Cellar which commenced in late November. For every four bottles purchased in this section, there is a further pound reduction per bottle, thus making their offer all the more competitive! At a miserly £5.99 the 2016 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was perfectly palatable and a good deal at this price.

For a further two pounds expended, the Falanghina Beneventuro Sassi del Mare is a most interesting wine with a light almondy note and floral-tinged nectarine flavour with orange and fennel overtones. This wine is worth your attention and definitely a different experience!

Champers next - very good Champagnes priced under £20 are somewhat of a rarity , but the Comte de Senneval Grand Cru Brut Champagne at £18.99 deemed it rude to disappoint and in fact delighted me in terms of its biscuity character and creamy mousse - a bit of a crowd pleaser à mon avis! I

took along a bottle to a budding artist's birthday bash, namely Julia Killingworth, pictured above by one of her particularly distinctive designs chatting to an admirer of her work! Wine for art's sake!

In the red section two old favourites prevailed, namely a 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico at a meagre £12.49, a wine crafted from partially dried grapes and resplendent with cherry and damson fruit, some spicy balsamic and sporting a port - like herbal character

with lush dark berries to the fore - quel délice!

My final selection is an earthy 2009 Riserva Barolo priced at £12.99 and at this price is one to snap up given its age and the fact it exudes red cherry and spices, stewed fruit and culminates in a long finish. Yes, there are superior Barolos, but not remotely in this price range!

LEMON ROAST

CHICKEN WITH CHORIZO STUFFING INGREDIENTS • 4 onions, 2 unpeeled and thickly sliced, 2 finely chopped • 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing • 3 tsp sweet smoked paprika • 4 lemon thyme sprigs • 1½ kg whole chicken • 2 lemons, zested and then halved • 100g chorizo, diced • 120g cooking chorizo, meat squeezed from the skins • 175g fresh white breadcrumbs • 100g soft dried apricots, chopped • 4 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1 large egg, beaten • 250ml glass white wine • 400ml chicken stock • sauteed potatoes • and steamed broccoli, to serve (optional) difficulty: easy total time: 2h 20mins serves: 5

METHOD 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Lay the sliced onions in the middle of a roasting tin. Mix the oil with 2 tsp paprika and leaves from one of the thyme sprigs. Rub all over the chicken, sit it on top of the onions and season well. Push 3 of the lemon halves inside the cavity, cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast for 45 mins.

2. Meanwhile, make the stuffing. Cook the diced chorizo over a lowmedium heat until crisp and plenty of oil has collected in the pan.

Scoop out the chorizo to cool, and tip the chopped onions into the pan.

Soften gently for 15-20 mins, then tip into a bowl to cool.

3. Rub together the cooking chorizo meat and the breadcrumbs, as if you were rubbing butter into flour to make pastry.

When the breadcrumbs are all orange, mix in the cooked chorizo and onions, apricots, parsley, leaves from another

thyme sprig, remaining paprika, the lemon zest and egg. Squeeze over the juice from the remaining lemon half, season with lots of pepper, then use your hands to squish everything together really well.

4. Grease a small roasting tin and push in the stuffing, roughing up the surface with a fork – this will create lots of crispy bits.

Tear over the remaining thyme sprigs.

5. After 45 mins, remove the foil from the chicken and pour the wine and stock into the tin. Reduce oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4 and put the chicken back in with the stuffing on a shelf below. Roast for another 45 mins until the juices between the legs and body run clear.

6. Rest the chicken for 15 mins while you bubble the pan juices to reduce a little, then carve and serve with the stuffing, reduced juices, and sautéed potatoes and steamed broccoli, if you like.

The fantasy of common law marriage

THE number of couples living together has increased by up to 460% in the last 10 years according to figures publised by The Office for National Statistics. Although cohabitants do have some legal protection they do not have the same rights as married couples and those that have entered into a civil partnership.

Many people are unaware that there is no specific legal status for what is often referred to as “common law marriage”.

This is the case no matter how long the couple has lived together or whether they have children together. The Office for National Statistics data on the composition of families and households in the UK shows the number of opposite sex cohabitating couple families has more than doubled between 1996 and 2015, from 1.5 to 3.1 million, whilst the number of same sex cohabiting couples increased from around 16,000 to 90,000 - an increase of around 460%. The current law relating to cohabitants and property rights is uncertain.

A number of court cases have considered the property rights of cohabitants. Lord Walker said in a 2007 case that there was “a good deal of uncertainty and the possibility of high litigations costs”. Baroness Hale also expressed concern about the costs of pursuing legal action: In family disputes, strong feelings are aroused when couples split up. These often lead the parties, honestly but mistakenly, to reinterpret the past in self-exculpatory or vengeful terms. They also lead people to spend far more on the legal battle than is warranted by the sums actually at stake.

A full examination of the facts is likely to involve disproportionate costs. In joint names cases it is also unlikely to lead to different results unless the facts are very unusual. Despite the lack of specific legislation there are a number of steps that couples can take to protect themselves and their property in an attempt to avoid the need for litigation following the breakdown of the relationship. Cohabiting couples should seek legal advice when setting up home together in order to formally record their intentions in respect of any property. Whether property is owned jointly by the parties or in the sole name of one person, a Declaration of Trust in respect of the property will provide conclusive evidence as to the ownership of the property should the relationship subsequently breakdown. This may reduce or remove the need for any litigation in respect of the property altogether. As the number of couples cohabitating continues to rise, so to do the existence of cohabitation agreements.

Cohabitation agreements can set out the arrangements that will apply to the parties whilst they are living together, as well as establishing each parties rights should the relationship subsequently breakdown.

Cohabitation agreements can be particularly helpful in setting out the ownership of property and the parties’ beneficial interest in said property, the parties’ finances, contributions to the household bills and matters concerning any children of the relationship. It is advisable that couples entering into a separation agreement seek independent legal advice.

YOUNGER generation performers will be to the fore in the new season of Bognor Regis Music Club.

The season opens tomorrow with a concert organised by club chairman Chris Coote.

The performers will include University of Chichesrer prize-winning soprano Tina Gelnere as well as a welcome return from soprano Polly Lamb.

She will be singing Schubert's wonderful Shepherd on the Rock along with clarinettist Tony Smart.

Also performing will be baritone Ian Clark and pianist Alex Benjamin, making his debut at the club.

On February 4, Susan Legg, above, who is well known to the club and the head of voice at the university - will be taking club members and university students through their paces in a vocal masterclass.

February 18 will see young musicians from the Regis School of Music perform in a concert organised by Nina and Sacha Levtov.

Symphony Orchestra cellist Christine Draycott will be performing works by Faure and Mendelssohn and Jasmine Selby, a prizewinning flautist from the university will perform Reinecke's romantic flute sonatas as well as the rarely heard but extremely beautiful Divertissement Grec by Gaubert where she will be joined by fellow flautist Paul Dorrell.

Another rarity will be a performance of William Lloyd-Webber's clarinet piece Frensham Pond.

Women who make Music will be a lecture recital by Angela Zanders, top, a piano tutor at the university, on April 1.

Mr Coote said: "We are particularly pleased to have such a varied programme this term and are grateful for the collaboration we enjoy with the university's music departments and our friends from the Regis School of Music."

Concerts are at the club's concert room at 7pm at 2 Sudley Road. Entry is either £6 or £9, or £8/£11 visitors.

Dear Sir, I’ve just read the comments and remarks made by a group called Chichester Deserves Better (CDB) regarding the upgrading of the A27. They are concerned that a re-run of the A27 consultation would include options of a northern bypass.

In my opinion this is a prime example of selfish nimbyism from an unelected group. The opportunities that this northern route would bring to the southwestern area of WSCC are so important for the future of the wider area.

It is not just a new road that would bring relief to the everincreasing traffic problems we all regularly experience but the work could be carried out without major disruption to the current quality of life for the residents, not just of Chichester, for this is a much bigger environment, but also for residents of Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Arundel with all the outlying parishes, all of which are having large influxes of houses being built or having plans drawn up to do so.

With all this new housing comes cars - without planning for this we are looking at a disaster in the making for all current and future residents.

I love the South Downs. I love walking in the area, many and varied walks with stunning views. By opening up this beautiful part of the National Park along an enhanced route it would surely entice more tourists to explore the whole area along with increased spending and more local businesses being supported.

This would be positive spin-off as a result of the northern route being chosen.

The decision to bring the northern route back to the table with open public consultation is to be applauded.

Please let’s all work together for a better future for everyone.

Dear Sir I am writing with regard to the West Park open air facility in Bognor Regis, pictured above, which is a mecca for young and old alike in the local community.

I use this area along with a few dozen others for the purposes of dog walking, however the area is used for many activities as it has just about everything going for it.

This includes generous parking, local conveniences, large childrens play area and a huge expanse of green field space.

It also has an indoor, lockable cafe on site which is the subject of this letter. Now this cafe is never open during the Winter months and to say that the opening hours in the Summer are irregular would be a gross understatement.

This facility is owned by the local council and to my knowledge is leased out to an individual.

Apparently this lease is due for renewal in the very near future and I am aware of one particular person who is interested in applying for this lease with a view to opening this cafe on an all year basis.

The only problem is that she has contacted Arun Council who referred her to Chichester Council who referred her to Bognor Town Council and so on!

Nobody has given her a definitive answer as to who is responsible for this cafe and all refuse to answer her repeated calls. A response from a member of one of these organisations would be most appreciated.

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum LAST week’s article left the story of the Royal Sussex Regiment at the end of the First World War. Between the First and Second World Wars the 1st Battalion served on the Rhine, in Ireland, at home and in Palestine. THe 2nd Battalion saw service in the West Indies, Malta, Chanak, Singapore, India and Belfast.

THe Royal Sussex Regiment raised 14 battalions for the Second World War, however only a few saw active service.

At the outbreak of the War the 1st battalion was based in Egypt, where it was attached to the 4th Indian Division with whom it remained for the duration of the war.

THe battalion took part in the Western Desert Campaign and the Italian campaign, including the Battle of Monte Cassino, where

the battalion sustained heavy casualties.

In 1944 the battalion was shipped to Greece where it remained for two years.

Meanwhile, at the outbreak of the war, the 2nd battalion was based in Ireland. THey were joined by the 4th and 5th battalions becoming the Royal Sussex Brigade and were sent to France in 1940.

Here, they took part in the fighting and rapid retreat to Dunkirk where they were evacuated.

In 1942 they were sent to North Africa where they fought in the Battle of Alam Halfa and later the Battle of El Alamein.

In 1943 the 2nd Battalion and volunteers from the 4th and 5th Battalions were formed into the 10th Battalion, a Parachute Regiment.

During Operation Market Garden in 1944, the 10th Battalion joined the 4th Parachute

It was here that Captain Lionel Ernest Queripel took part in the action which saw him posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

After the battle the 10th battalion was dispersed and a new 2nd battalion was raised, later being sent to Iraq and Persia where they stayed for the remainder of the war.

Also raised at this time were the 6th and 7th Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

THey served in France in 1940, however they suffered severe casualties during the fighting.

THe 6th Battalion served as a Home Defence unit for the remainder of the war, finally being distanced in 1946, whilst the 7th was disbanded in 1942.

Apart from the 9th battalion, the other battalions raised by the Royal Sussex Regiment during the war were mainly used for home defence or training purposes. In 1943 the 9th battalion was sent to fight in

the Burma Campaign. THey saw action in the Arakan, were airlifted into Myitkyina and by 1945 had fought its way to Mandalay.

THey were in Burma when the Japanese surrendered.

THe post war period saw considerable changes to the British Army, including the formation of the Home Counties Group, which incorporated the Royal Sussex Regiment.

Later on 12th September 1948, the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment was amalgamated into the 1st and the 4th and 5th Battalions were merged to become the 4th/5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, Territorial Army.

On 31 December 1966 the Royal Sussex Regiment became part of the newly formed Queen's Regiment. THe 4th/5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion was disbanded in March 1967 as a result of the formation of the Territorial and Army Volunteer units of the Queen’s Regiment.

Niro's crossover credentials are further highlighted by body cladding beneath the front and rear bumpers, along the sides and around the wheel arches. A subtle roof spoiler aids the car's aerodynamics.

At 4,355mm long, 1,805mm wide and 1,535mm tall (1,545 with roof rails), the compact Niro sits between the cee'd hatchback and the new Sportage SUV in size.

Yet with a 2,700mm wheelbase and short front and rear overhangs it provides generous interior space.

The petrol engine is a new version of the 1.6-litre direct-injection unit from the Kappa family, specifically engineered for use in hybrid cars. The combustion engine is paired with a 32kW (43bhp) electric motor

developing 170Nm of torque and powered by a lithium-ion polymer battery. Together, the two power units produce 139bhp, with 265Nm of torque available in first gear for rapid acceleration from standstill.

Is a parallel hybrid, which means that most of the time the petrol and electric power units work together. However, it can operate in all-electric mode for short distances when setting off, under gentle acceleration and when descending slopes or braking. A brake energy recovery system recoups energy normally dissipated as heat and stores it in the batteries for use later. The switch between all-electric, hybrid or petrol engine-only modes is seamless and varies according to the load being placed on the powertrain at any given time. This advanced powertrain ensures Niro is capable of up to 74.3mpg, with CO2 emissions from only 88g/km.

Blues have consecutive wins in their PostSport sights under bright lights of Sutton THE Great Escape is on for Chichester - with the Blues looking to register consecutive wins as they continue to pull themselves away from the drop zone.

A disappointing autumn has left Rob Lawrence's side third bottom of National League Three London and South East division.

But since the start of December, the Blues have rallied - and registered their third win from five at home to Dorking last Saturday.

Tomorrow, they will look to follow that up by taking on Sutton and Epsom under the lights at Cuddington Court.

It will not be easy against a side that are four places above Chi and are coming off the back of a victory over fellow strugglers Colchester.

But, after holding off a strong Dorking surge in the second half, the Blues know that on their day they can be up to the task.

Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "Chichester were worthy winners of this vital game, thanks to their very strong team performance in the first half.

Bognor swimmers kick off 2017 in style Tim Ridgway Swimming sport@sussexpost.co.uk BOGNOR'S swimmers made a splash - kicking off 2017 with a strong performance at the Littlehampton Open Competition.

A team of 19 from Bognor Regis Swimming Club made the short trip to the Arun Leisure Centre for the meet.

Despite some tough competition, BRSC’s swimmers did a fantastic job - with every single swimmer achieving a personal best.

This was a great result, as for some of the younger swimmers it was their first gala.

Among the stand-out performers were Amber Macrae, who gained silver for the 50 metre Butterfly, in a county qualifying time of 34.44.

Owen Cullen also won a silver for the 50 metre Breastroke, while Logan Hickmore won bronze for the 50 metre Breastroke.

Lorrie Whittington, the club's membership secretary, said: "It was a great swimming start to

2017, well done to all."

Founded in 1965, the club has grown to become one of the most popular clubs in West Sussex.

With well over 100 members, Bognor's swimmers have achieved success at club, county and national levels.

As well as it's youth team, it also has a masters section for over 19-year-olds where all are welcome to swim lengths.

All coaches are professional to ensure every swimmer reaches their potential. In return, the club expects dedicated commitment from every swimmer.

The first group is Starfish, which welcomes youngsters who can swim 50 metres continuously and dive in from the blocks, and goes up to Marlins, which is the youth competition squad.

Training takes place at The Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane throughout the week. Most members attend club night on Monday when all classes across the age groups have sessions.

Chi boss warns of tough times THEY may be third in the league and coming off the back of a record-equalling FA Vase run - but Chichester City boss Miles Rutherford is warning the Lillywhites will have a tough few months ahead of them.

Chi are currently flying high, unbeaten in the SCFL Premier since the start of September.

After losing in the last 32 of the Vase to Buckland Athletic a fortnight ago, Chi bounced back on Saturday, defeating Peacehaven 4-0 at Oaklands Park.

However, boss Miles Rutherford has warned that he expects his side to struggle in the coming months as key players are unavailable.

He told the Post: "We're going well but things will get harder from now to the end of the season due to a number of players going away.

"I'm trying to sort it out at the moment but there will be tougher times to come."

Among the players to be missing will be Daniel Hegarty, goalkeeper Anthony Ender and top scorer Scott Jones.

Rutherford said: "In fairness to Scott, he has promised he will play for us next season but he said he needed to go away travelling one more time.

"I told him I would rather he go away this year rather than next as that will be crucial for the future of Chichester City football club.

"Having not applied for promotion this year, it's vital that we are ready to give it a good go next year."

Next up for Chi is a trip to Newhaven tomorrow (3pm).

The Lillywhites have already visited the Trafalgar Ground this year, beating the Dockers 3-1 in the FA Vase. This time out, Chi will be missing Jamie Horncastle and Kieran Hartley.

Rutherford said: "It will be a tough match, it always is at their ground. Yes, we beat them in the Vase but they will be up for revenge.

"It's disappointing we're missing players for the next five or six weeks as it would be nice to have the squad together most of the year. We will struggle."

Pagham chairman Tony Shea believes the Lions are back roaring again after a disappointing December.

Mark Bennett's side slipped off the pace in the SCFL Premier with a poor run before and during the festive break.

But an impressive 1-1 draw away at secondplace Haywards Heath Town was followed up by a 1-0 away victory against Newhaven, thanks to an 88 minute strike from Joe Shelley.

Shea believes his side is back to where it should be.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "Newhaven was a great result for us. We played really well for 90 minutes and thoroughly deserved to win the match."

"The last couple of games - against Haywards Heath and Newhaven - there has been a different type of attitude. Hopefully, we have turned the corner and that little blip is well and truly past us."

The Lions currently sit fourth in the SCFL Premier, 11 points off Shoreham in top spot.

Tomorrow sees Peacehaven and Telscombe visit Nyetimber Lane (3pm) before a trip to

Crawley Down in the semi final of the RUR cup on Tuesday night (7.30pm).

Shea described it as a "massive week" for the club. He said: "We have got a big month but getting through to the final of the RUR cup is the most important.

Despite plying their trade one division below the home side, the Pirates pushed Sidlesham all the way.

The green and golds made the most of home advantage - and cruised into a three-goal lead thanks to a Callum Dowdell brace and a strike from top-scorer Tom Bayley.

The Pirates fought to the end though - and grabbed two goals late on through Michael Frangou and Danny Towers.

The result ended a 21-game winning streak for Nyetimber, which stretched back to March.

"Against Peacehaven, I am expecting three points. We played them earlier in the season and could have put ten past them. I'm not counting my chickens but if we want to go anywhere we want to win games like that."

SELSEY have work to do if they are to shore up a defence that is more prone to flooding than nearby Pagham Harbour.

Steve Bailey's side slumped to a 5-1 home defeat against Lingfield last week - meaning they have now conceded 15 goals in the last three games.

Selsey made the better start but could not take their chances. The Surrey side did - with Sam Bell scoring a hat-trick for the visitors.

Lindon Miller bagged a consolation for the Blues but it was not enough to save them from a third hammering in a row, after heavy defeats at East Preston and St Francis Rangers.

It leaves Selsey 11th in the 18 team SCFL Division One. And while they have up to five games in hand on their opponents, a readjustment at

the back is surely needed if the poor run is to be halted.

A week off due to other sides being in league cup action will help.

But on their return to action on January 28, the task will not get any easier, with Bailey's side facing a long trip to Bexhill to play Little Common.

The home side are top of the table and are the top scorers in SCFL Division One, netting 71 times in 24 games.

The return fixture earlier in the season at the Bunn Leisure Stadium saw Selsey edged out 2-1, while a trip to Little Common Rec in the Sussex Senior Cup saw the Blues hammered 5-0. Bailey will be hoping that Selsey can sharpen up and avoid a repeat of that in a fortnight's time.

It was the fourth postponement in recent weeks for Liam Greenfield's side, who currently sit top of the FA Women's Premier League Division One South West division.

Next up is a visit to bottom of the table Exeter City on Sunday.

Bognor boss Howell urges Rocks to keep focus on their own game Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell has urged his young squad to keep on looking after number one as the Rocks' promotion charge rolls on.

His comments come after a key week for the Nyewood Lane side, which saw Bognor emerge from two home games against promotion rivals with four points from six.

First up was a 1-1 draw against a physical Enfield Town side on Saturday. That was followed by a 2-1 comeback win against second-place Needham Market under the lights on Tuesday.

Up next for the table-topping Rocks is a tricky trip to Canvey Island, a side that sit second bottom of the Ryman Premier but have been unpredictable of late - beating fifth-placed Dulwich Hamlet but also losing heavily to Leiston and Worthing.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "I think we just need to try and look after ourselves.

You always need to give opponents the respect they deserve but we need to focus on what we are doing. If we do that, hopefully we'll be fine."

Bognor kicked off the week with the home draw with Enfield.

The Rocks fell behind early on when Ricky Gabriel bundled home a scrappy corner.

Despite dominating possession, it took Bognor until the second period to equalise with new man Elijah Adebayo netting on his home debut.

Both teams had chances to win it - Dan Lincoln pulled off a fine save in the Rocks' goal, while at the other end, Gary Charman's header was cleared off the line late on. But the final whistle came meaning a point for both sides.

Three days later, Bognor returned to Nyewood Lane to host Suffolk-side Needham Market.

Again they fell behind, this time through a penalty which was slotted home by Kemel Izzet.

But once again the Rocks fought back - and equalised through a cracking 25-yard strike from Jimmy Muitt. Victory was sealed with 15 minutes to play, James Fraser heading home from Alex Parsons cross. That made it two comebacks in the space of three days in front of the Nyewood Lane faithful.

But Howell said there was no secret to the fighting spirit, just complete trust that his players will stay true to their playing style.

Howell said: "After falling behind, if you have good players who can score goals then there's belief that they can get something and they fight harder.

"Whenever we go down it's not like I can't see how we will get a goal and create chances.

I know the lads will always just get on with how we play, by keeping the ball and trying to take chances when we can."

'We need more than a first 11' AFTER months of battling with injuries, the new year has given Bognor boss Jamie Howell a new conundrum - how to juggle his squad so the team's good form continues but his players do not suffer from burn out.

So far, Howell seems to be doing a very good job: the Rocks are unbeaten since the start of December and sit top of the Ryman Premier, while progressing to the semi finals of the Sussex Senior Cup. Recent matches have seen the former Arsenal trainee settle on a core of a side that rarely changes from game to game.

But with the fixtures coming thick and fast as the season builds up to a climax, the manager is aware that he will need to make adjustments to ensure Bognor do not come up short again in their bid for promotion.

Howell said: "I do not really have a first 11 as different games dictate different people.

"With the good squad that we have, we can do that.

"Sometimes I will rest a few psychologically rather than physically. For instance, Ollie [Pearce] was rested for the Needham game as I felt he needed to come out.

"Some of the squad who perhaps are not as sharp in terms of match fitness will come in

and feature. That's important.

"I will just try to pick the best team that will do a job for us."

After a few months where the Rocks were struggling to field a full side, Howell now has the luxury of a largely injury-free squad.

The absences did affect Bognor, coinciding with a slight wobble at the end of November which included defeats to Hendon and Tonbridge Angels.

Since then the Rocks have started to get people back to full fitness and results have followed, with the club on a run of ten unbeaten in all competitions.

The only player missing from the Canvey match tomorrow is striker Jimmy Wild, who has a knee problem.

His absence has been more than

made up by Fulham loanee Elijah Adebayo, who scored on his home debut against Enfield on Saturday.

Howell said: "He was excellent in that game.

I think people forget that he is only 19.

"He is a big, strong powerful boy who is young and will make mistakes "But I was delighted with his performance on Saturday and, if he keeps on doing what he is doing, I will be very pleased.".

IT'S been a key week for all of us at the club, taking on Enfield and then Needham Market at Nyewood Lane.

I said before both games that if we get four or six points then I would be very happy so I think we've done really well Against Enfield, going in at half time when we were 1-0 down I think most of us were thinking that we would have been happy with a point.

But in the second half I think we had enough of the ball and created enough chances to get the win.

Our keeper Dan Lincoln pulled off a cracking save late on to keep it at 1-1.

But standing at the other end, Dan said he felt their keeper's save from our striker Elijah Adebayo was more difficult as there was a lot of dip on the shot.

But a point was a good result against a very physical side who were lively going forward.

After the match, I don't think Enfield will be challenging for the title but I do think they will be in the playoffs.

It's a difficult place to go. It's not necessarily hostile but it is difficult to go up there and very strong at home.

In terms of the title, I think it's difficult to look past Havant and Waterlooville, given their resources.

But I also feel that Leiston will be there too as they are beating a lot of teams quite convincingly at the moment.

They are my two teams to watch but I also feel that Dulwich and Needham will be around the playoffs too.

We still have to go to Needham next month and I think that will be a big one for us.

It's not a very pretty pitch, one of the lads said it looked like they put the cows out on it when we went up there last year and won 1-0.

It was a terrible surface, the rain was coming down and first half we were playing into a strong wind.

I remember the manager shouting for us to get the ball into their half but we couldn't as it was blowing so hard.

Fortunately, after switching

ends we managed to get a result. I will take that again this time round.

The last few games have also shown the importance of playing in front of a home crowd.

Our fans are a very expectant lot.

They expect us to play fastflowing, exciting football and want to see us create lots of chances. But they are also very understanding of the challenges facing us.

There is an understanding of how we play in that we will try and dictate play regardless of the score or the run of results we are on.

And we know that if we put pressure on the opposition and try our best then the crowd will never get on our back.

It's difficult to put in terms of points but it is definitely a factor as, like a lot of teams in our league, we do very well at home.

I always back us to do well at home.

The dressing room has also been boosted with the addition of Elijah on loan from Fulham.

He played against us for Slough in the FA Trophy and scored a hat-trick. Back then we all thought he was a very good player, so having him on our side is a big thing.

He's just given us a big lift he wants to be at the club and wants to do what he can to help the team now we are in a great position.

He did get a bit of stick in the first half against Enfield. I think that's because they are demanding from everyone.

But he started to play himself into the match and I think he started to realise that he didn't need to come so deep to get the ball.

Once he did that he could start to harass the back four and be a bit more creative.

We've needed a target man for a while and bringing him in is a statement to everyone else.

We know that we have good management and a full squad to kick on for the rest of the season.
