Campaign to keep A27 lights By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS have opened a formal consultation into the closure of the Oving lights crossroads as the county council looks to create a traffic regulation order. THe order will legally prevent all traffic, apart from buses travelling northbound, from exiting the B2144 Oving Road east at the A27 junction.
An application to keep Oving’s traffic lights was rejected by district councillors in June last year. Planning conditions included in the Shopwhyke Lakes development were for the staged but eventual closure of the lights from Oving Road to the A27. THe conditions on the Shopwhyke Lakes planning application are to achieve a staged but eventual closure of the existing traffic lights to all traffic with the exception of limited movements for

buses, entering and crossing over the A27 carriageway from east (Oving Road) to west, then travelling north along the A27 to the Portfield roundabout. Newly re-elected MP, Mrs Gillian Keegan, supported keeping the lights, sending letters to local residents as part of her campaigning. She said: "I recently met with local residents, parish councillors and Cllr Simon Oakley to discuss concerns regarding the closure of the Oving
traffic lights, including; congestion, safety and the impact on our local environment. "I will arrange a meeting with Highways England to escalate these concerns. In the meantime, I encourage anyone who wants to support the community to sign the petition so the issue can be discussed by West Sussex County Council as the local highways authority."
