The Future is Golden

The Weald & Downland Living Museum launches its Golden Future Campaign – an ambitious two-year fundraising campaign to raise in excess of £2m. The Museum first opened its doors to the public on 5 September 1970 to preserve and celebrate the history of

rural England. Pledging their support are Campaign Ambassadors, including much loved actor, Hugh Bonneville, star of Downton Abbey. Joining Mr Bonneville are fellow ambassadors; Ruth Goodman, Simon Thurley and Dr Jonathan Foyle.

Museum Director, Simon Wardell, has the Museum’s future at heart and the opportunities that the campaign will bring. “The campaign will propel us into our next half century. Our continuing aim is to enrich our visitor experience, improve our facilities and to underpin the protection of the magnificent buildings and artefacts in our care. It is a milestone moment for the Museum and we invite you to

be part of it”. The campaign will raise in excess of £2 million to fund four key projects, which focus on: - Access - to improve; physical access, health & wellbeing, comfort and information on-site. - Titchfield Market Hall – One of the Museum’s most iconic buildings, in need of conservation work. - Museum Endowment – To build

the foundation for a sustainable future for the Museum for the next 50 years. - The Museum’s 50 Fund – to enable the Museum to respond confidently to unexpected repairs. The Golden Future Campaign, which launched on 3 October 2019 will run throughout the 50th anniversary year in 2020 and continue until the end of 2021.

What our ambassadors have to say... Dr Jonathan Foyle, Architectural Historian, broadcaster and heritage advocate “Descriptions of history seldom convey a visceral experience. That’s the glory of the historic environment. However, while millions visit the grand set-pieces of cathedrals, palaces and castles, the everyday sort of houses that sustained our ancestors have been lost, or evolved beyond recognition through countless comforts and mod cons. The Weald & Downland Living Museum allows you to step back in time, to smell and feel and touch the past they knew.”

Hugh Bonneville, Actor

“I love the Weald & Downland Living Museum for so many reasons… I love being able to do things. The active taking part, experimenting with history, the hands on sort of historical experience that is so well supported and explored at the Weald and Downland. It is a rare place indeed that encourages people to get so stuck in and of course it therefore attracts a special breed of people as visitors, course attendees, volunteers and staff whose knowledge, enthusiasm and energy are a delight.”

“This wonderfully vibrant museum of architecture shows how life and work has adapted and changed down the centuries. Placing buildings from different eras side by side it transports us through time, bringing our shared history to life, inviting us to explore our past and ignite our imagination for the future. “I am delighted to support the Weald & Downland Living Museum in celebrating all that this innovative institution has achieved over the past 50 years and to ensure it can continue its inspiring work for the next generation and beyond."
