Chichester District Council received 24 letters supporting an application for a cafe at Birdham Pool Marina and 11 opposing it, as well as an objection from the parish council.

Despite concerns raised over the site being part of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), officers recommended the committee permit the retrospective planning application for Scuttlebutt Cafe.

THe parish council objected to the planning application for a number of reasons including: further development in a sensitive area, intrusion into the northern side of the causeway, a reduction in parking facilities and loss of land to the marina for marina purposes.

THe application site is situated on a small parcel of land located on the southern side of the Birdham Pool

Marina and was previously used to store boats from the marina.

Birdham parish councillor Graham Campbell said: "THis is further development into a sensitive area of AONB which the parish council is very keen on protecting. We have written this into our neighbourhood plan and our heritage policies."

Supporter, Mrs Anita Trevelyan, said: "THis should be welcomed as an all-round year facility, supporting the marina business, its staff and visitors to the area. Woman jailed A JAIL sentence has been given to a Pagham woman who stole over £100,000 from a Birdham business.

Lynn Boakes, 47 of Sea Lane in Pagham, was hired as a book-keeper at a steel company in Birdham in April, 2013, and was responsible for the company’s payroll.

Towards the end of 2016, Boakes started to abuse the trust she had built by taking regular sick days, despite posts on social media showing her shopping or being abroad on holiday.

Concerned, the director of the company searched for the payroll documents for the previous few years and discovered Boakes had been paying herself a higher wage than had been agreed. Since October, 2014, until April, 2017, she had overpaid herself by a total of £13,462.

Further investigation discovered Boakes had used her inflated pay slips to purchase a car on finance. She had also diverted £103,450.26-worth of her employer’s funds into her own bank account that had been disguised by using a fake company name.

Boakes was immediately suspended from the company, the director informed Sussex Police and her work computer seized. On this computer a job reference for a job application for her husband was found. THe reference falsely stated David Boakes, 54 of Sea

Lane in Pagham, had worked for the steel company for two years and had been signed by a fake employee ‘Janet Young’ – Boakes’s actual middle and maiden names.

At Hove Crown Court on THursday, August 22, Lynn was sentenced to three years in prison following her earlier guilty pleas to three counts of fraud: fraud by abuse of position, fraud by false representation and making an article for use in fraud.

David was given a two-year conditional discharge after he pleaded guilty to fraud by representation.

David entered an earlier not guilty to converting criminal property, which the courts decided could lie on file.

Cllr Richard Plowman is depicted in the painting wearing his mayoral robes with his mayoral chain.

THe portrait in pastels was created by former Chichester art student and friend Fatima Pantoja from Spain who recently rose to fame as a semi-finalist in Portrait Artist of the Year 2019, recently screened on Channel 4.

THe mayor said of the painting: "Chichester is a thriving centre for arts

and culture and it is good to see one of its students doing so well and how we encouraged her in her early days.

"I am delighted with the portrait, its energy and captures I believe my personality in a way photograph could ever achieve."

Cllr Plowman will be holding exclusive 'afternoon tea with the mayor' in the Mayor's Parlour starting later this month, when the public will be able to see the portrait, the Plowman clock and have a tour around the Council House.

Fatima said: "For Richard's portrait, I used charcoal and soft pastels, which seems to be very popular since I used it for the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year show.

"Every portrait has a level of difficulty.

Some faces are easier than others, luckily, Richard's face, like his whole personality, is very charismatic, and this really helps when it comes to capture the likeness of a person.

"Although as an artist I'm very critic of my own work, I'm very happy with Richard's portrait. A portrait is not just about the face, it's more than that, that is why I prefer to work from life as much as possible."

"Richard posed for me for 4 hours in the Mayor's Parlour, and we spoke about all sort of things in a relaxed atmosphere, all adds up and shows in the final result."

A container is available for nonrecyclable material but the mobile recycling service does not accept soil and hardcore or hazardous materials.

THe mobile recycling service is not intended for large bulky items, but for household recyclables only.

Residents in the area have expressed concern that removal of this service may encourage fly-tipping.

Fly tipping, when rubbish is dumped illegally on roads or land, is a serious crime that costs the taxpayer £350,000 a year, and could lead to a fine of up to £50,000 and a prison sentence for those responsible.

THe district council currently runs a campaign, Against Fly Tipping.

Fly-tipped waste typically consists of household rubbish, large domestic items such as fridges and furniture, garden refuse, building rubble, asbestos waste and tyres.

If you see someone fly-tipping or would like to report an area where fly-tipping has taken place, you

should make a note of the date, time, place, description of rubbish and any persons or vehicles involved.

Cllr Donna Johnson, Local Alliance district councillor for Sidlesham with Selsey North, said: "Both West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council have declared a climate emergency.

"Any cuts to the mobile service work contrary to this declaration and are likely to increase waste and decrease recycling.

"Both Selsey and the Witterings are some way from Westhampnett, so this is not just an issue about waste but environmental pollution, increasing trips into Chichester.

"Many members of our communities may have no choice but to pay for their recyclable waste to be removed.

"THey may not be able to afford it, meaning that residents who want to recycle, will not be able to. Councils should be prioritising and facilitating ease of recycling, not making it harder.

THe potential environmental impact outweighs any budgetary saving."

` Smashed shop A MAN has been charged after a glass panel was smashed in Chichester.

Officers were conducting an area search near West Street, Chichester, around 6.35pm on Tuesday, September 3, following a report of a verbal altercation between a group of men.

During the patrol, officers were alerted to a smashed window pane at a coffee shop in nearby North Street and a man was arrested nearby.

Jonathan Turner, 25, of Duncan Road, Chichester, was charged with criminal damage and will appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on September 20.

` Child protection SUSSEX Police have welcomed the publication of a inspection review of child protection work in the force by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

THe force's child protection work was inspected in June, 2018, and it found the force was working hard to improve the way risks to children were managed and to meet the ongoing increase in demand for child protection. It also identified areas for improvements.

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: "I am pleased and reassured that the review acknowledges significant work by Sussex Police to improve the protection of vulnerable children."

City residents suffer over medical delays

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FOUR in ten people aged over 60 in Chichester say their mental health had suffered because of cancelled or delayed diagnostic tests or operations, with three in ten worried their physical health would also deteriorate, according to a new survey.

With today’s generation of older people having ambitious plans for their retirement, almost a quarter fear their health will stand in the way. Having sought help, two in ten (19 per cent) aged over 60 then had their appointment postponed two or more times.

Of those who had their appointment, test or operation cancelled, three in ten were given less than 24 hours’ notice, with 18 per cent cancelled on the day. With 73 per cent having mentally prepared, they then had to wait an average of 12.5 weeks for it to be rescheduled.

THe survey, commissioned by healthcare charity Nuffield Health, revealed the delays and cancellations caused four in ten over 60-year-olds to feel ‘stressed’ and three in ten ‘anxious’.

THis comes at a time in life when anxiety levels are usually at their lowest as people in their mid to late 60s feel less stressed as they start enjoying their retirement.

With one in ten Brits aged 65-85 also providing care to others, the impact of delays and cancellations is not only felt by the individuals but by the people they care for too, with the uncertainty

an additional burden to their health condition.

While four in ten of over-60s in Chichester accept that health conditions are part of later life, many have ambitions for retirement they don’t want their health to hamper, including renovating the house (23 per cent), volunteering for charity (25 per cent) or travelling through Europe by train (13 per cent).

As a result of delays and cancellations to treatment, a quarter (26 per cent) felt unable to commit to any plans.

Former Wales rugby international Jonathan Davies had a hip operation when he was 51.

He said: “I’d had problems with my hip for a number of years, but was desperate to get my life back on track and didn’t want my health to stop me doing the things I love to do.

"It’s about choice, and I made mine.

I booked in to have my hip operated on and nine months later I completed a cycling race I’d been wanting to do.

Taking back control over your health is empowering and I’d urge everyone to explore the options available for treatment so you’re not hampered by health at a time in life when you should be making the most of it!”

District council pledges cash to help passengers on buses THE county council is set to receive around £60,000 from Chichester District Council to fund information boards for buses.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors agreed to fund the real time passenger information screens, which will show bus passengers timings of bus arrivals at their stop.

Funding will cover seven new information boards on bus stops around the city including two at Homebase in Barnfield Drive, one in THe Hornet, one at Westgate Stop U, in the Avenue De Chartres, two at THe Peacheries, in Bognor Road, and one at the Grosvenor Road stop, in Stockbridge Road.

THe £60,000 has been taken out of community infrastructure levy money - cash collected from developers in the form of a planning charge – and will include £5,601.87 for contingencies.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning services, said it was important in an age where environment and climate change had become so topical, that people were encourage to switch from driving their car to using public transport.

“If the public have greater certainty as to the arrival of public transport it will encourage the public to use the car less.”

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AROUND 50 residents gathered outside the city MP's office on Wednesday evening to demand answers to their serious concerns over a no deal Brexit.

THe group of protesters made up of residents, business owners and activists took a stand outside the premises of Gillian Keegan in St John’s Street, Chichester.

THe spontaneous grassroots action came one day after a crucial vote in the Commons in which MPs ruled out a nodeal exit on October 31.

THe group claimed that Conservative MP Mrs Keegan had consistently warned in public and the media about the dangers of a no deal exit but she did not join 21 Tory rebels including Rory Stewart — whom she had backed as party leader — to exclude it in Tuesday’s vote.

Among those at the rally calling for Mrs Keegan to match action to words was worried resident Laura, 54.

She said: "Gillian Keegan appears to have gone back on her many assurances to the community that she did not and would not support a no-deal exit because of the impact on small businesses in the area."

THe midweek protest in Chichester coincided with a warning from the British Retail Consortium about food shortages and price rises in the event of no deal.

Dr Kate O’Kelly, the Liberal Democrat county councillor for Midhurst and Harting district councillor, told protesters she was demanding answers about the repeated warnings.

She said: "Our MP likes to portray herself as a sensible, pro-business 'moderate' and repeatedly warned of the dangers of no deal,.

"I think we should stop Brexit, but even if Gillian Keegan doesn't agree she should have the decency to act upon the warnings she herself has given."

Cllr Kevin Hughes, Labour district and city councillor added: "Mrs Keegan’s vote to save her job rather than rescue her constituents from the dire consequences of a no-deal Brexit tells us all we need to know about where her priorities lie."

Chichester South Green councillor Sarah Sharp also commented: "We need Gillian to come to a public meeting and account for her actions and explain what her views are in public."

THe Chichester Post were unable to get a

comment from Mrs Keegan before going to print, but in a statement on Mrs Keegan's website she said: "THere are definitely challenges in the political world at the moment. I have written before about my approach to Brexit which is that we should honour the result of the Referendum but we should leave in an orderly way, with a deal.

"I have voted three times to leave with a deal. Some claim that the agreement negotiated over the last three years with the EU is not really Brexit.

"Just before recess I voted to ensure that Parliament could not be suspended in a bid to leave the EU, without a deal, at the end of October, without further scrutiny.

"As I write this column, some very highly respected colleagues have had the Conservative whip removed. THis is deeply concerning and I hope that this is rectified soon. It looks very likely there will be an election in the near future so everybody will, once again, get an opportunity to decide who you would like to represent you in Parliament. Our constitution and democracy has been challenged by Brexit but ultimately you, the voters, will always have the power to determine our destiny."

A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl has discovered a war plate from a plane from the Second World War. While digging on the family allotment which is located behind the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, Elsa discovered a piece of bent metal.

Noticing some lettering, Elsa and her father, Ben Davis, decided to give it a clean which revealed a logo comprising of an old aircraft shape and the letters DH over the wings.

Around the logo they could make out the words 'De Havilland - Controllable Pitch Airscrew'.

Elsa and her dad gave the object to the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum to look at and got a phone call from the curator who told them the wording on

manufacturer's plate as best it can be read appears to be as follows: 'Made under one more of patent nos 168801 Hamilton standard.'

Ben said: "THe curator explained that there were three types of propeller, fixed pitch, variable pitch (which would also be described as controllable pitch) and constant speed.

"THe plate most likely was fitted to the propeller of a Hurricane or Spitfire but could been fitted to other types of aircraft."

Elsa, along with her younger sister, Chloe, have since enjoyed two visits to the museum learning about Spitfires and Hurricane aircraft and RAF Tangmere's important role during the Second World War.

White House Farm development plans put on hold by councillors

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANNING officers at Chichester District Council were told to look at the White House Farm development again after a climate emergency was declared earlier this year.

At a planning committee meeting, one objector described the developers' use of solar panels on 24 per cent of the first 73 dwellings as a 'sticking plaster'.

THe recommendation for the outstanding reserved matters for the first parcel of land and homes was deferred by committee members after almost two hours of debate.

THe reserved matters for the first 73 homes includes parking, landscaping and open spaces but councillors were unhappy with the resolution on environmental and highway issues.

Cllr Julian Joy, speaking as chairman of planning on Chichester City Council, and an architect, said the whole development indicated 20 per cent growth in housing for the whole of Chichester in a single application.

He said: "THe application for the first phase and reserved matters is of poor design.

"THe standard of housing building type has been around for about 20 years.

THese designs are not catering for our climate emergency that we have all declared as councils."

Objector Ms Valerie Brigginshaw said

access routes were inappropriate and the light mitigation for bats needed to be looked at.

She said: "We really need to reassess the whole thing, given the climate emergency we have declared. THe fact that two solar panels have been stuck on some roofs of 24 per cent of the properties is a very small sticking plaster."

THe agent, Mr Nicholas Billington, told the committee the development would include solar powered street llighting. He said: "THe updated design strategy includes a new section dedicated to sustainability which makes a commitment to achieve additional reductions in energy demand on each parcel which goes beyond the requirements of your policy."

Officers told committee members that deferring the application could lead to an appeal.

Cllr Sarah Sharp made the proposal to defer the application after she raised concerns over several things including the number of electric car charging points. Officers argued that outline permission was granted and it would be deemed unreasonable to go back and look at this.

Cllr Graeme Barrett added: "We are looking for a carbon neutral city by 2030.

THat's only some ten years away. THese homes will only last 100 to 150 years so we should be building them to meet the requirements for beyond ten years, not just today."

Gillian Keegan agrees with the Prime Minister on UK's rainforest pledge CHICHESTER'S MP welcomed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ambitious environmental commitments on Friday at the G7 Summit in France.

THe Prime Minister pledged £10 million to protect and restore the Amazon rainforest, which is currently suffering from record numbers of forest fires.

THe £10 million will be invested through the UK Department for International Development’s Partnerships for Forests programme to support local communities to help protect the Amazon.

THe Government also pledged to double their commitment to the international Green Climate Fund over the next four years to £1.44 billion, which invests in projects tackling climate change and biodiversity loss.

THe Amazon rainforest produces more than

20 per cent of the world’s oxygen and is home to at least ten per cent of the known species in the world.

Mrs Gillian Keegan said: "THe damage being done by the forest fires is irreparable, destroying homes and habitats, and releasing smoke, CO2, and toxic levels of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere and surrounding communities.

"So it’s absolutely right that the international community steps up to help and I’m proud that the UK has pledged £10 million to support local efforts to fight these devastating fires."

Boris Johnson commented: "THe fires ravaging the Amazon rainforest are not only heartbreaking, they are an international crisis.

"We stand ready to provide whatever help we can to bring them under control and help protect one of Earth’s greatest wonders."

` Police reports DURING the week from Monday, August 26, to Sunday, September 1, numerous reports were made to police, which included: Five reports of vehicle crime were reported from rural beauty spot areas. Locations included Chilgrove, Stanstead Park, West Stoke and Chidham.

In Buckingham Drive, Chichester, on Monday, August 26, police received a report of an attempted burglary at a property. Damage was caused to the door but no entry gained. Serial 0370 26/8.

On Wednesday, August 28, a property was broken into between 09.30am and 2.15pm in Appledram Lane North, Chichester. Serial 0871 28/8.

In Cherry Orchard Road, Chichester, on THursday, August 29, a vehicle was stolen from outside a property. Serial 0474 29/8.

On Friday, August 30, a vehicle was broken into while parked outside a property in Priory Road, Chichester. Serial 0469 30/8.

In Lockgate Road, Sidlesham, the same day, a shed was broken into.

THe suspects were disturbed by an alarm activation. Serial 1522 29/8 On Sunday, September 1, a Ford Transit pick up truck was stolen overnight from Selsey Road, Chichester. Serial 0365 1/9.

In Monks Hill, Emsworth, also on Sunday, police received a report of a break-in at commercial premises.

Two suspects were seen by a member of the public leaving the location at around 12.25am. Serial 0038 01/09.

Braving rain for five miles

HUNDREDS of runners braved torrential rain to compete in Goodwood’s annual five mile run, with record-breaking times achieved in both the men’s and women’s races.

THis year’s charity run welcomed nearly 250 adults who tackled the iconic hill climb, made famous by the legendary motor racing heroes during the Festival of Speed.

Juliet Stallard set a new record for the first female finisher with a time of 33.18 minutes. Second place in the women’s was Caroline Wood, finishing in 33.33 minutes and third was Jessica THomson, with 33.36 minutes.

In the men’s race, John Peters completed the run in a record 28.8 minutes, followed by Matt Jolly, with 29.07 minutes, and Joseph Gosling taking third with 29.59 minutes.

Dozens of children took part in the junior one mile event and participants could also sprint with their dog. Taking on a one mile course, which went past

Goodwood House, the junior winner was Digby Fulford, with 6.36 minutes.

Lewis Yates was second and Charlie Banhan third.

“THis year’s weather couldn’t have been more of a contrast to the soaring temperatures of 2018 but happily the cooler weather meant that our four-legged friend could join in too,” explained one of the runners.

Setting off the race and handing out the winners’ prizes was the inspirational Amanda Worne, who was paralysed in a cycling accident.

Winners received prizes donated by the Run Company, Salomon Sportswear and South Downs Water.

All proceeds went to Goodwood’s charity of the year, Canine Partners – the national charity providing assistance dogs to those living with disabilities.

Goodwood organiser Claire Browne added: “THe runners and supporters were amazing, they didn’t let the rain didn’t dampen their spirits. Everyone who tackled this challenging course did fantastically well and we look forward to seeing them all again next year.”

Council makes plans for popup shops in the city centre THE DISTRICT council is looking at ways to return vacant shop units in the city centre to use by introducing popup shops.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, councillors discussed the idea of using a vacant shop in Crane Street to trial the idea.

Pop-up shops bring a number of benefits including drawing a new trade to the area, providing an affordable opportunity for start-up businesses in the city centre and improving the look of the high street.

Once developed, this scheme will identify suitable vacant premises and set them up as affordable temporary spaces, giving smaller businesses and enterprises the opportunity to trade in a high street location without the commitment or cost of a longer-term lease.

"We’re really pleased that this new scheme can now be developed," said Cllr Eileen Lintill, leader of Chichester

District Council.

"As a council, we are committed to supporting our high streets.

"As part of this, we have to consider a variety of things, including changing customer needs and expectations, and the barriers that smaller businesses face when trying to find affordable retail space in a prime location.

"Pop-up shops, which return empty units to retail use, are becoming a very popular and effective way of meeting these needs."

Traders would have a licence and pay a nominal 'all inclusive' charge, set at no less than £200 per month.

THe council purchased ten retail units at Crane Street in 2015 which have not been immune to the challenges of the high street with a higher turnover of occupiers in more recent years and empty premises taking longer to let.

` Food collections CHICHESTER District Council has decided not to take part in the trial run of a food waste collection scheme which is due to start in March next year.

Around 70 per cent of food waste is considered to be avoidable and the scheme, run by the county, would allow councils to test the water and find out how many residents were interested in such a collection.

At a Chichester District Council cabinet meeting held on Tuesday councillors agreed not take part in the plans.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, leader of the council said: "I think it’s right not to take part at the moment.

"I think the government is in a state of flux – we don’t know what they’re going to come out with.

"I think it would be foolhardy of us to commit lots of revenue to this until we know exactly what the government are going to do."

THe UK's set waste recycling targets are: • 50 per cent by 2020 • 55 per cent by 2025 • 65 per cent by 2034 As a county, West Sussex recycled 50 per cent residual waste in the year 2018-2019.

Cllr Lintill added: "We are also concerned that the trial would require a change to our waste and recycling collection service. THis would involve collecting food waste weekly, dry recycling fortnightly and general waste once every three weeks.

"We are concerned that this could be confusing for residents.

"Our environment panel has been tasked by cabinet to keep this under review."

Sharon's hair today, gone tomorrow at fabric shop

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A BRAVE shop worker in Chichester has raised around £800 for a cancer charity after she decided to shave her head.

Sharon Manning, a furnishing administrator from Closs & Hamblin, in North Street, had a hair-raising idea to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer.

Stylist Alex Cohen from Q Hair and Beauty, just a few doors down from the fabric and haberdashery shop, lent a helping hand by performing the head shave.

She said: "THis is the first time I have shaved a head for charity. It was really exciting to do this and see all the faces of support.

"I feel honoured to have done this and it's a lovely thing to do for such a good cause. To be part of doing something so big is really nice."

Sharon, who has worked at the shop for 18 years, had a target of £250 but exceeded her expectations by raising over £800 at the time of doing the shave on Friday afternoon.

She said: "I chose the charity because I know loads of people who have had it and need it and I just wanted to help.

"THis has never been done in this shop before. We do lots of fundraising here, people do walks and bakes but this hasn't happened. I wanted to do something different and I didn't want to bake a cake!"

Sharon only had short hair before but she still plucked up the courage to go shorter.

She added: "I was very nervous this morning but it's all right now. It's a bit freaky but I quite like it. My mother will have a fit!"

Event is Pride of Bognor Regis as party is declared first of its kind

THe town's initial Pride party on the Pier was the country's first such celebration of diversity to be held on one of the structures. It was believed to be only the second in the world.

THe news was greeted with cheers and applause by those present of the estimated 700 people of all ages who went along to last Saturday's event, which was backed by Post Newspapers.

Organiser Sarah Boote-Cook told them: "THank you for coming along today and supporting this.

"I didn't realise quite how important this Pride event actually was.

"Anthony Wills, of the National Piers Society, has researched this and he is sure this is the first Pride party on any pier in the UK - and only the second in the world.

"THat makes it really important and really special to have this Pride.

"A thank you to John Ayers who owns the pier for allowing us to come here today and thank you to everyone for being here."

Mr Wills, the society's media relations officer, later said: "As far as I can find out, the first Pride event on a pier was held in Washington DC in June. THere is another one taking place in Vancouver in Canada on Sunday.

"But this one in Bognor Regis is the first in the UK. Of course, it's good to see the

pier being used for this event.

"It brings people on to the pier who might not have been here before and it could bring them upstairs to the Legends bar which they might not have seen either.

"THis event is about family friendly fun and that is just what piers were built for. Everyone is having a good time and enjoying themselves and that's what piers are all about.

"Today was meant to have been Birdman day but, I'm not sure with this weather (strong winds and an afternoon shower) if that would have taken place, and so it's good that this part of the weekend has been kept to bring an activity to the pier."

THe party on the pier was arranged after the initial plans for a Pride weekend, to incorporate the traditional International Bognor Birdman competition, failed to meet Arun District Council's safety rules for large-scale public events.

Organisers instead decided to stage an eight-hour party in the Legends bar on the first floor of the pier's building and added to this with a short seafront parade.

THe free entertainment included shows by drag queens Cherry Liquor, Aura Jay and Danii Dior and guests. THey were followed on stage by the Elton John Red Piano Tour tribute act. Rainbow face art and hair colouring was also on offer to get everyone in the party mood.

Littlehampton resident Jess Jackson, 27, said: "THis is a really good event because it is smaller than Brighton and Worthing.

THere is so much going on in those events.

"It is also so important to have events in

towns like Bognor Regis because diversity needs to be celebrated everywhere.

"It's not just for the bigger places like Brighton and the more we have events like this one the better.

"I would like to see another Pride Party on the Pier next year. It would be really good to keep this going.

"THe more we do these events the more we will see diversity celebrated."

Oliver Tubb, 25, of Bognor Regis, said: "I have been in the town for about a year.

It's nice to something that is different and independent.

"A lot of hard work has gone into this for the community and it's good to have a lot of businesses working together to make it happen. It's a really positive event and I would like to see it happen next year."

Fellow Bognor Regis resident Muriel Coulter, 73, said: "It is good to have this event and I'm here to support a friend.

"Why shouldn't this take place if it makes people happy? THey should be able to express themselves - and, if it makes them happy, I'm happy."

Town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall went along in a rainbow waistcoast with his consort, Cllr Steve Hearn.

He said: "THis is a good idea and, hopefully, it will become a regular event. I would like to see it come back next year on the seafront as it was planned this year.

"THe number of people here shows there is a demand for it."

Invasion of the Roman army in city

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE Roman army invaded the site at Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens at the weekend.

THe venue was brought to life as the leading Roman re-enactment society, THe Ermine Street Guard, invoked the furore of the Roman battle for Britain.

Impressive displays of weaponry, warfare and battle tactics were on display at 12 noon and 3pm on both days, along with a range of interactive experiences.

Visitors were able to discover the remedies used to treat everything from sore, marching feet to battle wounds and challenge an opponent at Tabula, a game the Roman soldiers played during their spare time.

THere were hands-on activitites including making phalera, a medal worn by soldiers on their chest, sending a message using Roman signals and tasting the food that kept the soldiers sustained and ready for battle.

THe recent ‘Rotten Romans’ film highlights life in Roman times but visitors were able to discover for themselves if they really were rotten.

THe events allowed visitors to travel back 2,000 years to find out how a Roman soldier would have been trained, watching the firing of artillery pieces, trying on wonderful, authentic replica armour and wandering round a Roman army camp display and chatting with soldiers. THere were also visits to the Roman traders and find out all about hair and beauty of the period.

Melanie Marsh, property manager, said: "Fishbourne Roman Palace was invaded by Roman soldiers at the

weekend.

"THe Ermine Street Guard set up camp in the Palace gardens to talk to visitors and carry out impressive displays of their weaponry and warfare. Visitors gathered to see the soldiers at training and watch them firing their ballista and onager catapults."

THe palace dates back to the beginning of Roman occupation in Britain and offers visitors of all ages a unique chance to look back in time.

Discovered in 1960, the north wing of this remarkable building remains an important visitor attraction and archaeological site for anyone interested in learning more about Roman art and architecture.

Post office to be re-opened THE post office in Bracklesham Bay will be re-opening next month with extended hours.

THe post office will have a new location in Bestway Retail in Bracklesham Lane, and will be opening daily from 6am – 10pm.

THere will be a wide range of services available, including banking facilities for personal customers and small businesses.

THe post office will be re-opening on Wednesday, October 16, at 1pm.

THe opening hours will be significantly longer than before - for 112 hours per week.

Woodlands post office closed temporarily in December, 2017, due to the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises.

Services will now be offered from a low-screened, open-plan serving point alongside the retail counter.

Dean Morris, multiples account executive, said: "We are delighted to be able to restore a post office to this area and we hope that customers will continue to use the service.

"THe longer opening hours than before will make it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.

"We are confident that this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs."

THere is currently a step at the entrance to the new premises.

However, planning permission has been submitted for a ramp and handrail to be installed.

CHICHESTER saw one of its biggest demonstrations in decades on Saturday as more than 400 people gathered at the Market Cross to protest at the government's prorogation of Parliament and the prospect of a no deal Brexit.

At the time of the protest, a no deal Brexit looked likely, with current Prime Minister, Boris Johnson's plans for the UK to leave on October 31.

Phil Wilson, organiser of the demonstration, thanked everyone for attending.

He said: "For over 400 people to demonstrate in Chichester, with only three days' notice, shows the real strength of feeling over this issue.

"Individuals, organisations and political parties have put their differences aside and come together to unite in the face of a thoroughly undemocratic manoeuvre which excludes the voice of the people’s representatives at this crucial time in our country's history."

On Tuesday night, the Prime Minister lost a key vote which may now cast doubt over a no deal Brexit and lead to a snap general election.

Protester Jane Venn said: "For the first

time in my 52 years I feel threatened by a loss of democracy and frightened for the future.

"Protests like the one in Chichester today seem to be the only way that we, the people, can get our voices across."

Meanwhile, fellow protester, Terry Atkinson stated: “THis is not about Brexit.

It is about our Parliamentary democracy versus dictatorship.”

Gabrielle Kim said: "I’ve lived through prime ministers I disliked and mistrusted, but this the first time in 58 years I have felt that the fundamental integrity of our country is at stake."

Special ceremony held for voluntary group's award

THe volunteers were presented with THe Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony on Tuesday at the Council House in North Street.

Susan Pyper, the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, presented the chairman of the group, Jane Ramage, with the prestigious award - the highest one given to volunteer groups across the UK. Mrs Pyper said: “I feel very proud.

You have done extraordinarily well.

"THe Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is incredibly prestigious.

“So many organisations and charities apply and I can tell you right now that only a small per cent actually get to where we are today. Few get to this presentation ceremony.

“THey haven't got that discipline, that camaraderie, that sense of purpose.

“THey haven’t got what it takes to be the number one tier.

“Believe me, you guys have got what it takes, and that is shown through this award.

THe Friends offer a daily trolley service for patients, as well as running their popular hospital shop, which provides a variety of everyday items.

THe volunteer group was selected in

June to receive the award as part of the annual list.

At the ceremony the Friends were presented with a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed crystal glass.

Chairman Jane Ramage said: “THis is the most special occasion we could have ever hoped for to come as friends in terms of the recognition of the service we provide to our hospitals.

Drug driver caught on A27 gets banned A DRIVER near Fontwell who repeatedly denied having taken drugs was found to be almost 17 times the legal limit.

James Owo was pulled over on the A27 near Fontwell on January 21, after the Mercedes B160 he was driving showed as being uninsured.

When officers approached the vehicle they detected a pungent smell they suspected to be cannabis.

Owo was asked to undergo a roadside DrugWipe test which he failed.

On closer inspection, a small quantity of white powder and several small quantities of herbal cannabis were discovered.

Owo was arrested and taken into custody where he provided a reading of 169mcg of methylamphetamine per litre of blood in his system. THe legal limit is 10mcg.

THe 52-year-old solicitor, of Binfield Road, London, was subsequently arrested and charged with drugdriving, driving with no insurance, possession of a Class B drug (cannabis) and possession of a Class A drug (methylamphetamine).

At South London Magistrates’ Court on August 5, he was disqualified from driving for 15 months, fined £350, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £35 victim surcharge.

Arresting officer PC Tom Van Der Wee, of the Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: "If we suspect someone has been driving under the influence of drugs, we will require them to undergo a roadside DrugWipe test which involves taking a swab of the suspects mouth and tongue.

"Owo repeatedly denied having taken any drugs, but our tests proved

this.

“We are extremely fortunate that the award exists and that we were fortunate enough to be nominated and to get through the process.”

Jane thanked Sir Brian THwaites, who was the one who put the Friends forward for the award in the first place.

She also thanked Captain Hugh Knox, an ex-patient, who was one of the independent people required to say how valuable their work is.

"We will continue to respond to reports of drink and drug-drivers 365 days a year as we aim to keep all road users safe, and deal robustly with those who break the law and put other innocent road users’ lives at risk."

Painting winner SAGE HOUSE customer Patrick Cox has won the National Audit of Dementia Art prize with a piece called 'Blue Sun' that he produced during one of Sage House’s watercolour sessions.

Patrick has been attending Sage House for a few months, having found art to be very therapeutic and a great pastime following the death of his wife.

His winning painting was chosen from entries sent from all over the UK. A spokesperson for the National Audit of Dementia said: “We had over 90 entries this year and were amazed at the calibre of art we received."

CHARITY, Carers Support West Sussex, has announced the appointment of Robert Adams as its new chairman of the board of trustees. Robert succeeds Alan Botterill who has served as interim chairman for the past 20 months. Alan will continue to serve as a trustee director.

THe West Sussex charity supports nearly 24,000 carers living in West Sussex who find themselves in an unpaid caring role for family members, friends and children living with a range of life limiting conditions.

THey provide services including a dedicated carer response line open six days a week, more than 50 monthly carers groups, a carer learning and wellbeing programme offering free workshops and a carer equipment service to support those in a caring role.

Robert has a wealth of experience to bring to the table. Qualifying in business management and marketing, overseeing maritime operations, travel commerce and marketing teams right through to becoming a practice director of a sizeable

law firm, Robert has subsequently held a number of trustee roles in the charity sector.

Speaking about his new role, Robert said: "I am very pleased to be appointed as chairman, and having worked closely with Alan and most recently with Sonia Mangan, our new chief executive, I now feel ready to take on the full responsibility. We want Carers Support to continue on its path of growth to provide help to even more carers right across West Sussex and especially when they or their loved ones are unfortunately in hospital.

"Our charity has a great ethos in supporting the whole person in their need, who may be caring for a loved one in so many different ways. During my time with the charity to date, I have been incredibly impressed with the dedication and passion of our front-line staff and volunteers, who so diligently deliver our services and manage such a wide variety of support groups for carers."

` Pilot's talk RETIRED Squadron Leader Joe Marsden will be speaking to aviation enthusiasts in Bognor Regis and Chichester about his career flying one of the RAF's most distinctive aircraft.

Joe will use photos and film clips at the next meeting of Air ACES - Arun and Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society - to show the capability of the Vulcan bomber.

He flew 34 different Vulcan aircraft, including XH558, which was seen at airshows until 2016, and XL426, which is at Southend Airport.

Flying higher than airliners, at nearly the speed of sound, he would burn 1,000 gallons of fuel an hour on his missions.

Joe will cover all aspects of his various roles from Cyprus to the Far East and Midway Island to Alaska.

His illustrated talk will take place at 7.30pm on September 23 at the Chichester Park Hotel in Chichester.

Entrance for Arun ACES members is £3, guests £5 and under-16s free.

Tickets will be on sale on the night.

` County Hall A MEETING will be held at County Hall in Chichester on Monday to discuss scrapping West Sussex County Council's current cabinet style of decision-making and opt instead for a committee-based system with members from all parties.

Earlier this summer, inspectors were critical of fire & rescue and children’s services in the county, prompting Cllr Dr James Walsh, leader of the Liberal Democrats, to declare a ‘systemic failure of political leadership’ at the council.

He wants the change to be in place

by May, 2020. If the governance committee supports the notice, it will be submitted to a meeting of the full council on October 18.

However, if you Google 'grapefruit and medication' you will find there are several common medications which can have an adverse reaction with grapefruit including those for blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression.

Friday, September 6, 2019 Dear Editor, THis is my open letter to Gillian Keegan, Chichester MP. I was outraged and appalled by Boris Johnson’s actions to prorogue Parliament at this critical moment in our nation’s history.

THis is our gravest political and constitutional crisis since World War Two. To say, as he did, that this is normal parliamentary procedure and that there will be ‘plenty of time’ for Parliament to debate Brexit before October 31, is a gross distortion of the truth.

He still pretends that he wants a revised negotiated deal with the EU whilst doing almost nothing to bring this about. Indeed, his actions will probably make it even less likely.

Since he became Prime Minister he has faced Parliamentary scrutiny for precisely one day and he is now doing everything he can to ensure that there is minimal opportunity for MPs to debate Brexit and to try and stop what would be a catastrophic ‘no-deal’ Brexit on October 31.

His Chancellor of the Exchequer is trying to bribe the electorate with spending promises with money the Government does not have, and the Queen’s Speech would have been much more appropriately timed after October 31 when it could have reflected what had happened by then in relation to Brexit.

I implore you in the name of our democracy to work with like-minded colleagues in your own party and other parties to stop Boris Johnson taking us out of the EU without a deal.

If you do not act very soon it will be too late and we will all suffer the consequences for many years to come.

Dear Editor I live in the local area, and as a Save the Children supporter, I'd like to show Chichester’s MP Gillian Keegan that constituents care about protecting children in conflict.

Around the world, millions of children are battling through conflicts started by adults. From Syria to Somalia, Yemen to Myanmar, twice as many children grow up in conflict than did 30 years ago. THis issue deeply concerns me.

If I ever knock on someone’s door I have to keep trying even if they shut the door the first time.

I wish for all children – whether Syrian or not – to have a place to stay and to have access to education because it is indispensable. I hope all children will reach their goals. I’d like to become a doctor to help wounded people. I also wanted to become a lawyer to defend justice.

If leaders saw what my friends and I were doing to raise awareness, they would be positively influenced. Not only do children learn from adults.

Adults also learn from children.

I’m not scared because I’m selfconfident. When something bad happens, I take action and keep going, I fix things and try to make them right.

When we see something wrong, we have to stop it.

A varied menu with generous portions for all

My cousin Kat and I visited on a quiet, balmy Tuesday evening and picked a table tucked nicely by a fireplace with a comfy leather seat and chairs.

With an easy to read menu full of choice, we took our time making decisions but ended up deciding on halloumi fries with avocado dip (£5) and salt and pepper calamari and garlic mayo dip (£6) to start.

THe halloumi fries were cooked to perfection with a slight squeak of the cheese on the teeth and a delicious avocado dip which was creamy and complemented the cheese perfectly.

THe calamari was also well cooked, easily bitten into without any chewy pieces. THe batter was deliciously crisp and flaked into pieces and was gently seasoned with salt and pepper.

After we finished the starters we chose main courses of 8oz ribeye steak

served with double cooked chips, oven baked tomato and portabello mushroom and peppercorn sauce (£18.95) and house smoked full rack of ribs with coleslaw and hand-cut chips (£14 - or £13 every Tuesday).

My ribeye steak was beautifully tender, and although slightly on the rare-medium scale it was still absolutely delicious.

THe peppercorn sauce wasn't as thick as I have usually tried but with plenty of whole peppercorns and full of flavour it was still really delicious.

One of the best touches to the plate was the mushroom being lightly flavoured with garlic, turning a sometimes plain piece of food to have an extra flavour.

My cousin chose the ribs which is available throughout the week but on a Tuesday it's a special price and includes either a pint, glass of wine or a soft.

Every Monday it's two for one on handmade pizzas, THursday is steak night and all day every Sunday is roasts and a quiz at 7pm.

Kat said her ribs were really tender, as she cut through them the meat fell away from the bone.

THe sauce was really tasty and the rack of ribs weren't drowning it, but there was still enough to last.

Our chips were also really good, cooked well and cut thick but still crisp.

Despite the both of us being stuffed, we couldn't resist the temptation of a dessert.

While Kat plumped for the Oreo chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, I chose apple and berry crumble with vanilla ice cream.

THe brownie was one of the most generous portions I have ever seen, but that didn't put Kat off! She said the brownie was moist with a delicate crisp outer crust and the vanilla ice cream balanced the rich chocolate taste.

My crumble was absolutely

wonderful, with a really light but meltin-the-mouth crumble topping and perfectly stewed fruit. Although more of a winter warmer, it was nonetheless worth every bite.

THe staff were really attentive, but didn't keep bothering us for our menu choices, which gave us ample time to peruse the options.

THe new-look pub looks fresh, bright and clean from the exterior and the inside has a really relaxing atmosphere which makes you feel instantly at home. THere are even a whole host of board games, newspapers, books and gentle music to keep groups, families or lone diners or drinkers entertained.

THe prices are average but the portions are really generous, making the Hole In THe Wall the ideal place to pop in to after a busy day at work, shopping or socialising.

Music. An Afternoon at the Proms. Join the Bognor Regis Concert Band for an afternoon of patriotic music at the Alexandra THeatre.

Event. Bognor Old Town Artisan Market. THe first market took place on September 12, 2015. It brought together local artisans offering crafts, jewellery, food products, clothing and music was available to entertain visitors. Until 2016, the market was held three times a year. In 2017, the first Christmas market was added to the line-up. It was a resounding success and now there are four markets a year April, July, September and the very popular Christmas market in November.

For 2019 the event has expanded inside Bognor Regis Methodist Church to accommodate more inside sellers. Singers and musicians will be

Event. The Saturday Club. THe club for children, aged five to 14, at Arun Leisure Centre, Felpham Way, Bognor Regis PO2 8ED, is bursting with fun. With box 'n' bounce and play 'n' slide inflatables, table top games, sports, arts and crafts and team games, all led by the centre's team of fantastic activity staff. THe club has something for everyone. Parents can sign their kids in for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes of non-stop fun, just make sure they have a a drink and snack to fuel them for the entertainment. Dancing. Sixties Pop Night with The Minkees. THe sixties will be swinging again when THe Mulberries present a chance to dance and sing along to the hits of 50 years ago. THe Mulberries, whose name stems from the Mulberry Harbours which were hidden under the sea along the

coastline in readiness for the D-Day landings, was originally set up to raise funds to build a village hall in Pagham and, to this day, continues to support Pagham Village Hall for the benefit of all users and distribute money to various local good causes. Regular dances are held at the hall, featuring live groups, with proceeds to charitable funds.

Music. WSO: Isata KannehMason. THe sensation that is the Kanneh-Mason family from Nottingham has been the subject of BBC documentaries and radio programmes and the Worthing Symphony Orchestra hosts pianist Isata on Sunday, September 8. Kanneh-Mason makes her Worthing debut playing the brilliant Piano Concerto by Clara Schumann (née Wieck), a true heroine of 19th century German romanticism.

Beethoven’s epic Eroica Symphony was composed in honour of Napoleon’s revolutionary campaigns across Europe but he scrubbed out Napoleon’s name when the latter proclaimed himself Emperor of France. THe programme in the Assembly Hall, in Stoke Abott Road, also includes Mozart's Don Giovanni Overture, Chabrier's Habanera and the Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn.

Art. Oxmarket Centre of Arts. THe latest exhibitions featuring work by artists in the Chichester and Bognor Regis area cover a range of genre. Already open and continuing until September 23 is South Coast Creatives, which is an exciting collaboration of five West Sussex artists, exhibiting a range of mixed media mosaics and ceramics, oil and acrylic paintings, forged metal by an artist blacksmith and quality lacquered lamps, sculptures and furniture items.

Textile designer Caroline Bonar's show is open until September 15. She specialises in hand-painted silk with each piece individually designed and hand painted in vibrant and exciting colours, incorporating a batik overlay

2 which increases depth and lustre to the design. Imagine THat! will be celebrating creative imagination in sculpture, printmaking, painting, textile and Iconography, with informal Iconography demonstrations all week from September 10-15. Music. Big Band Concert.

As part of the centenary celebrations of Rotary Club of Chichester, a concert featuring the Central Band of Royal British Legion and Winchester Military Wives Choir will be staged at St Paul’s Church, Churchside, Chichester PO19 6FT on Saturday, September 14, 7pm. THe programme will comprise familiar and popular music. THe band was formed 71 years ago and traces its roots to a Home Guard band who met in Epsom, Surrey, during the Second World War. When the Home Guard were stood down in the winter of 1944, its members decided to form their own British Legion band, although many of its players have not been in the services. All concert seats are unreserved and cost £12.50, which includes an interval drink. Proceeds of the evening, after a donation to the choir, will be shared between the band and the Rotary Club's Centenary Appeal.

what recent excavations tell us about early Saxon settlements in Sussex, particularly in the area between the Arun and Adur rivers. His talk will be illustrated with ancient artefacts found in the pagan Saxon cemetery on Highdown Hill, which are vital evidence since there are no written accounts of the early settlements. TWO years after moving from San Francisco to Nashville, the adventurous US bluegrass band Front Country return to West Sussex for a concert at Chidham Village Hall tomorrow (Saturday).

THe former 'Bay-based' five-piece band made the move due to the encouragement of the Bluegrass community who were copying several of their songs and felt they would be more at home in the acknowledged Country capital of the world.

Promoter Mark Ringwood said: "WemsFest originally brought the band to Tuppenny Barn about five years ago, and three years ago they played Emsworth Baptist Church.

"What sets them apart from other bluegrass bands is

their willingness to combine their own great material with that by other songwriters such as Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' and, very successfully, King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man'.

"THeir lead singer, Melody Walker, is one of the most charismatic performers ever to front a bluegrass band and definitely puts the Blues into bluegrass.

"Front Country's Chidham show was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 8, but has been brought forward 24 hours so that they can open for another great bluegrass band, Asleep At THe Wheel, at a festival up north," added Mark.

Investing in your children's education

THIS month, September, marks the start of the academic year as well as a new term, with all its excitement and apprehension, plans and worries for adults and the children alike.

But it is also a season for parents, schools and colleges to start preparing for the children coming along behind who will join the education system for the first time or move on to the next stage in their education in autumn 2020.

Parents and guardians have a great deal of choice about where youngsters can be schooled and visiting on an open day will enable them, and the potential pupils, to make an informed decision about where to apply.

Early years Parents can give their children a good start in the educational race if they are able to enrol them in a nursery school.

Some will take babies from six months old, especially useful if parents need or want to go back to work as soon as possible after the birth.

You can get help paying for childcare if it’s provided by: a registered childminder, playscheme, nursery or club; a childminder with an Ofstedregistered childminding agency; a registered school; or a home careworker working for a registered home care agency.

Between the ages of two and four, the Government will pay for up to 30 hours

of tax-free child care, depending on the working hours and income of parents.

Playgroups and pre-schools have to be registered and regulated to ensure they provide safe and competant premises, staff and an educational curriculum for the children in their charge.

Ofsted, the Government's Office of Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, has inspectors who provide reports on education and services for learners of all ages which can be seen be members of the public to help them find out about schooling of all types.

Primary school While no child has to go to a nursery school, playgroup or similar, it's a different case with joining the state education system from the age of five. Four-year-olds can go to school, starting in the September after their fourth birthday but if the child was born between April 1 and August 31,

entry can be delayed until the following September.

Most families choose a school as near as possible to their home but sometimes this isn't possible or there may be reasons for wanting to use another one.

Each local education authority, such as West Sussex County Council, has advice and rules about choosing schools and fixes dates for when applications can be made. Parents can visit schools, either infants or primary, which is combined infants and junior, before the deadline for applications, usually in early January of the year when the child will start.

Decisions will be announced in April and there is an appeal system if parents are unhappy with the school offered.

THe first day of school is a big day in everyone's life, both child and parent, but schools are well used to helping and coping with practical and emotional issues, setting up a good basis for the next 15 years of compulsory education.

SITUATED in the beautiful National Trust village of Slindon means learning outside the classroom is at the heart of the curriculum of its primary school.

However, the main aim of staff at Slindon Church of England Primary School is to provide an environment which is secure, caring and happy, where everyone values and respects each other and in which personal and academic development flourishes.

Headteacher Lucy Cooper says: "THe result is that our children are enabled to fully develop their talents.

Since she took over the school in Meadsway , it has met the national average for Key Stage 2 attainment for the last two years and, after its last Ofsted inspection, on April 30 and May 1, it was given an overall judgement of 'Good', with that grade in each of the five areas covered.

By Cllr Richard Plowman AN AERIAL picture of Chichester shows how fortunate we are to have green spaces within the city walls. THe two most precious to the public are Bishop’s Palace Gardens and Priory Park.

Bishop’s Palace Gardens is a plantsman’s heaven, magnificently maintained by its Friends, who were also instrumental in the design and the selection of plants. A review earlier this month in TripAdvisor sums it up perfectly: Beautiful gardens - always a lovely place to walk around with several places to sit. Stunning views of the cathedral as well.

Priory Park, by contrast, is Chichester’s ‘village green’, where you can trace the history of England from the recently excavated Roman bath-house, the Norman motte, Magna Carta, the Guildhall (chancel of the Greyfriars monastery), the Civil War of 1642 and both world wars. It was also significant in the birth of international cricket.

Last year I organised Priory Park 100, celebrating and commemorating the park being given in 1918 to the citizens of Chichester by the 7th Duke of Richmond as a place of recreation and, crucially, as a perpetual memorial for the fallen of World War One. Seventeen events over ten days really brought the community together. THe park looked at its very best.

I cannot deny, it is my favourite spot in Chichester and Fenwick’s is a great place for a coffee. (See if you can find my woodcarving in the café.)

Another recent contributor to TripAdvisor wrote: "Beautiful park. It's a fantastic park with a few historic surprises lurking about so it's worth visiting for both leisure and sightseeing."

Parks are so important to our wellbeing and it is believed they save the NHS about £111m by keeping us healthy in mind, body and spirit. We need to protect them.

All over the UK, they are being used increasingly by councils as sources of income, often to the detriment of their regular users and nearby residents. We saw this last autumn with Oktoberfest.

Events involving both alcohol and amplified music are not suited to Priory Park, which is so close to houses and flats, and has only one exit through the residential area.

THe Christmas ice-rink divided the community and damaged the park. In addition, there is evidence that this type of event makes no contribution to the city centre economy.

On the other hand, weddings and plays in the Guildhall, charity events in the park itself and the annual open-air film screenings in aid of the New Park Cinema are greatly to be welcomed. THe junior park fun run every Sunday morning is a delight, as are the bowls and cricket matches.

Yes, we are lucky indeed to have two beautiful public spaces in Chichester. We must look after them for future generations.

A LONG-SERVING postman retired last week with a special village farewell.

Andy Beal, pictured above right, was presented with a farewell card signed by village well-wishers when he retired after 44 years as a rural postman.

Andy started off as a telegram boy, riding a 50cc moped, delivering telegrams throughout West Sussex.

He graduated to a Royal Mail van in 1978 and began delivering the post in and around East Ashling, Funtington and West Stoke.

THE 461 Chichester Sqn Air Cadets were awarded a cheque for £5,289.60 by treasurer Gary Sharp on behalf of the Chichester Freemasons.

THe money will go towards a series of repairs on the Sqn minibus, including a new gearbox, windows, heating system and wrap.

THe Lodge of Union said they were absolutely delighted to be able to support the Chichester ATC with the refurbishment of their minibus, which is vital to the group in transporting the cadets to various official and unofficial events around the country.

One cadet said: "We are really pleased to have our minibus repaired.

"THe broken heating system has been on full blast all summer and the windows don't work so it has been like travelling in a oven! ' "We can now travel to activities like flying and water sports without being roasted alive on the way."

A LAUNDRY company has thanked other businesses for their help after a small fire broke out in their main processing facility in Chichester.

In April this year, Home and Dry Laundries suffered extensive smoke damage and the business was able to re-open quickly thanks to other companies rallying around to help.

Julia Willkins principal at Home and Dry, said: "We would like to thank everyone and all the businesses that helped us get back on our feet, including Phillips Electrics, Regis Removals, Comfy Carpets, Lighting Fire, G.P Plumbing, BPD plumbing, and other companies.

"With the help of Pressing Needs in Fareham and the offer from local companies, procedures were put in place to keep going.

Every member of staff was fantastic and everyone came to the rescue to keep Home and Dry going and fully operational after just three days. During the downtime, staff were redeployed to other areas of the business."

Solent Laundry Systems helped enormously and the machinery was taken away and assessed independently for possible reuse.

Unfortunately, smoke damage and possible concealed heat damage meant they were a total write-off.

In mid-July, Vaughan Concepts designed a new laundry and this week Home and Dry opened its doors with brand new modern machinery from Germany and Italy .

Given the restraints of laundry companies closing over the summer periods, both Stahl and Barbanti managed to ship and build machines to specifications required by Home and Dry within a week and they have just relaunched.

Julia and her team said they were very thankful for the tremendous efforts made by everyone in getting the Home and Dry site back up and running and open to customers again.

GENESISCARE, which runs specialist cancer treatment centres across the region, has donated £2,000 to sponsor Dan Magrill in the Chichester Half Marathon on October 6.

Dan is a consultant urological surgeon at Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust and West Sussex Urology LLP and is raising funds for UROLINK, a charity that aims to improve urology training and facilities in developing parts of Africa. He has already taken part in the Chichester Triathlon in July raising funds for UROLINK and Love Your Hospital, supporting local urology services within the trust.

THis is the second time GenesisCare has supported the urology surgeons. Last year the company, which has regional cancer centres in Southampton, Portsmouth and Guildford, donated £8,000 to support West Sussex urology surgeons in their 100-mile ride for Love Your Hospital.

Dan explained: "I am thrilled that GenesisCare have donated so generously for a second time! We’re keen to help UROLINK, an organisation that provides medical equipment and education and training to surgeons and medical staff in developing areas across Africa.

"Closer to home, we are constantly looking for ways to improve local services and fundraising helps reach our goals. Local events like this are great and it’s always nice to see familiar faces taking part."

THe Chichester Half Marathon includes a mixture of road, cross country and cycle path terrain, taking in the historic sites of Chichester, before heading up the Trundle, and finishing back down Centurion Way. GenesisCare said: "We’re very impressed by Dan’s fantastic fund-raising initiatives and delighted to support such an important cause which is benefiting patients across the region and in Africa."

The history of Fontwell Park Racecourse

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at the Novium Museum THE name ‘Fontwell’ has its origins in Roman times, they called it ‘Fons’, as it was the only spot between Chichester and Pevensey that had drinking water. THe Saxons later added ‘well’ to the name.

Fontwell racecourse as we know it was started in 1924 by Alfred Day, the son of a horse trainer who had been lured into a career in horse racing, despite starting out his career in medicine. In 1887 he bought a property, THe Hermitage, a few miles from Arundel.

At the end of the First World War, as Alfred was approaching 60, he was walking in the garden one evening with his nephew, Meyrick. Alfred intimated he was thinking of retiring as a horse trainer. Meyrick suggested that the training ground around the house could be converted into a racecourse. Frederick H, Cathcart, of the racecourse management company Pratt & Co, was then approached.

THe notion had possibilities despite failed efforts being made in Bournemouth to establish a racecourse in the 1920s; there had been a racecourse at Portsmouth but, during the war effort it had been requisitioned by the Government and used as an ammunition dump.

It didn’t re-open. Alfred’s first application for a licence to the National Hunt Committee was declined. His second application outlined that one of the benefits and reasons for the application was that it would be a replacement for one lost from Portsmouth. A licence was eventually granted for racing in May, 1924.

About 250 people applied to become members of the Fontwell Park Club, many being from the higher echelons of local society.

During the interwar years a pattern meet, the best in flat racing that do not contain barriers,

hurdles or jumps , was set for a two-day event in May and then again in September. When Alfred Day died in 1935, his widow, Elizabeth, and daughter, Daisy, continued running the farm at Fontwell while Meyrick became chairman.

Due to the Second World War, racing was suspended at Fontwell from March, 1940. As Fontwell was a few miles from Tangmere, the course saw its own action. After one bombing raid on the RAF station in which living quarters were hit, some officers of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) spent several nights in the racecourse stands. Fontwell was also used as a holding station for wounded personnel and dances were held in Fontwell House. THe centre of the racecourse was also used for grazing cattle due to food rationing.

On October 25, 1945, the first race after the war was held. Fontwell had survived relatively unscathed, whereas other courses, like Derby and Gatwick, did not resume National Hunt meetings. Initially, there were problems in finding suitable horses for jumping and the particularly cold winter of 1946-47 also held things back.

THe Day family had largely disappeared following the deaths of Elizabeth (in 1943) and Daisy (in 1949) and Fontwell had been inherited by a cousin, Binda Billsborough.

Meyrick Good died in 1962 but had seen Fontwell prosper where others had failed.

From 1962, Fontwell began attracting sponsors with a new race the Ovaltine Cup which ran on December 22. Pratt & Co were still in business as racecourse managers, running both Fontwell and Plumpton racecourse in East Sussex, but had been bought by millionaire businessman and racing enthusiast Isidore Kerman in 1961.

f The winner’s enclosure At this time, Goodwood made overtures to purchase Fontwell, meaning that Pratt & Co would no longer have the franchise to run it.

Kerman was able to outbid Goodwod’s offer and Fontwell shareholders, including Bina Billsborough, accepted Kerman’s offer. He retained ownership throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

By 1991, a new grandstand named after Kerman was completed at Fontwell.

Unfortunately, this coincided with an economic slump and by 1996 Pratt & Co had gone out of business. THe Lingfield Park management group took over the running of Fontwell but had little spare capital for investing in Fontwell, which went through a spell of stagnation.

In 1998, National Hunt racing ended at Windsor, meaning Fontwell was the last figure-eight course left in Britain. In March, 1998, Kerman sold Plumpton in the hope of being able to invest money back into Fontwell.

Unfortunately, he died, aged 93, before this was possible. His son, Andy, set up a new company,

Sussex Racecourse Management (SRM) which took over management of Plumpton and Fontwell Park. By 2002, Andy Kerman’s main business interest meant he had less time to devote to Fontwell so he sold his shares to Northern Racing which was, with investment, able to make improvements, including a new 90 box stable yard and a 40-bedroom hotel and pub/restaurant.

THere are currently over 20 race meetings a year and the course facilities are also used for many non-racing activities including weddings, markets and concerts.

They are looking for volunteers to be trained and equipped to be a spiritual befriender of older people, and visit them at Residential Homes and in their own homes. They are also looking for someone to help with ad hoc administrative help. They require all of their volunteers to be practising Christians, which is usually, but not always, illustrated by active church membership.

Deck Crew on Canal Trip Boats – Chichester Ship Canal Trust The Chichester Ship Canal Trust offers daily scheduled boat trips from February till October as well as popular charter trips and activities to get you closer to the water and to nature. They would welcome volunteers to qualify as Mate or Skipper on board their two trip boats on Chichester Canal. They operate two trip boats - Richmond runs their popular cruises such as Fish and Chips and Afternoon Teas, while Kingfisher runs up to 4 trips a day from February to November. Each trip has to have two Deck Crew.

Crew undergo a full training programme led by qualified personnel. On passing out, Mates can then accompany a Skipper on any of the trips. It is possible to take further training to pass out as a Skipper approved by the Marine and Coastguard Agency.

Group Co-ordinator – Contact the Elderly Contact the Elderly is a national charity whose aim is to relieve the loneliness and isolation felt by elderly people living alone; they meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 3 to 5pm in a volunteer host’s home where they chat over tea and cakes.

Coordinators ensure everything runs smoothly each month. They organise the monthly group outings by liaising with the hosts and the drivers so that everyone is clear about the time, date and place. It is the coordinator’s job to be organised and keep everyone informed, planning the monthly host schedule, assisting with DBS checks and liaising with new volunteers and guests. Coordinators are also often volunteer drivers too. You will need common sense, organisational ability, kindness and patience.

City aiming for FA Cup history CHICHESTER CITY will be looking to make FA Cup history when they welcome Isthmian South Central side Chalfont St Peter to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

Miles Rutherford's side have only played in the first qualifying round of the world's oldest competition once before.

But tomorrow high-flying Chi can continue their recent historymaking run by going where none of their predecessors has been.

With ÂŁ4,500 up for grabs for the winners, there will be plenty of incentives for Rutherford's team to outdo the Buckinghamshire visitors.

A month into their first ever season at step four and City are enjoying life in the Isthmian South East.

A 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Faversham Town last weekend lifted Chi up to third in the standings with three wins from their first four games.

THat was followed by a fiercelycontested Velocity Trophy game against league rivals Hastings United at Oaklands in midweek.

Despite missing seven first team regulars, City put up a strong fight in a narrow 2-0 defeat.

Another tough match is expected against fellow step four side Chalfont.

Following a good start to their league campaign, the Saints are unbeaten after four matches having won three and drawn one, leaving them nicely positioned in fourth place.

Much will depend on Chi's front line which continues to cause defences at this level problems.

Two of those players came to the fore against Faversham after City fell behind in the first half to the Kent visitors.

Hastings, who have only conceded one goal in five games in all competitions so far this season, were rarely threatened in the first half and should have gone ahead on 18 minutes when a super pass from Tom Chalmers played Kenny Pogue in only for the striker to skew his shot wide of Ender’s left-hand post.

THe visitors took the lead in the 26th minute when Pogue got in too easily, latching on to a nice pass from Davide Rodari.

Chichester started the second half more brightly. A smart exchange between Wild and Haitham gave the opposition back four some problems and Bennetts flashed a header narrowly wide.

But it was the Us who doubled their lead with 20 minutes to go when Chalmers shrugged Chi skipper Ben Pashley off the ball and steered it past Ender.

Chi's losing streak continues CHICHESTER City Ladies are still waiting for their first win under new boss Sadie Blakely after suffering two defeats in four days.

THe revamped Green and Whites have had a tough start to life under the rookie manager, losing their first three matches in the National Southern Premier, and being dumped out of the league cup by lower league opposition.

THe last week saw a 3-0 loss at former Super League side Yeovil followed by a 7-1 defeat to Crawley Wasps under the lights at Oaklands Park. THe setback enabled the strong visitors to go top of the table to reach their highest league position.

Despite the poor run, there has been plenty of positives for Blakely to take, not least the development of a number of younger players who are gaining valuable experience at tier three of the women's game.

THe hope is that Chi will break their duck on Sunday when they head to Oxford United in the league (2pm).

opponents, who were playing in front of their new American owner.

After restricting the home side to a series of long shots, home keeper Beth Howard had to act sharply to stop a dangerous effort from City’s captain, Megan Fox, sailing in.

experience started to tell. It was a 17-yearold, though, who broke the deadlock as Erin Bloomfield put the Somerset side in front.

THe lead was doubled shortly after when Sarah Wiltshire lobbed home before Kelly Aldridge completed the win as time ticked down.

Lions looking to keep improving after cup win PAGHAM boss Bob Paine will be hoping his young side have turned the corner as their performances start to lead to rewards.

THe Lions have produced two excellent showings in the last week, losing out in extra time to Bridon Ropes in the FA Vase - a match they should have won - before beating SCFL Division One side Oakwood 2-0 in the Peter Bentley Cup. Next up are two home league matches, with Crawley Down Gatwick visiting tomorrow (3pm) before early pacesetters Lancing make the trip along the A27 on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division One, Sidlesham chalked up their first win of the season after defeating Southern Counties East Division One side Stansfeld in the FA Vase.

Sids needed a replay to end the contest after a 2-2 draw at the Recreation Ground last weekend.

A chip from Jono Tallent, a placed shot from the middle of the box from Joe Manners, and an ice cool finish at the end from Ben Mepham sealed a 3-1 victory in midweek.

Next up for the Sids in that competition is visit from Kennington FC next weekend.

Before that, though, is a visit from high-flying Littlehampton Town tomorrow (3pm) before a short trip to Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm) as the club look to lift themselves from 16th in the 18- team division.

Fellow Division One side Selsey are fighting at the other end of the table, sitting sixth after four games of the season.

Daren Pearce's side will look to build on that in the coming week when they host Worthing United tomorrow (3pm) before a visit from unbeaten league leaders Littlehampton Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Selsey were soundly beaten 5-0 by Southern Counties East Premier side Punjab United in the FA Vase.

THat was followed by a 2-1 extra time victory over SCFL Premier's Horley Town in the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday.

After falling behind, a bizarre red card for the visitors when the number 11 threw his boot at the referee. THat let Blues back into the match through Joe Bennett before Lindon Miller got the winner.

In SCFL Division Two Bosham host Brighton Electricity tomorrow (3pm) after beating Rottingdean Village 4-3 last time out.

Cross Country CHICHESTER Runners have confirmed a busy programme of running during the winter months.

With days starting to get shorter, the club is welcoming runners of all abilities to think about taking up the sport.

For those who are a little more seasoned, a series of competitions will start with the Goodwood Cross Country Relays on September 28.

Other notable dates for the diaries are the Sussex Cross Country League on October 12 (Goodwood), November 9 (Lancing Manor), November 30 (Stanmer Park) and February 8 (Bexhill).

THe Cross Country Championships will kick off

on January 4 with the Sussex Championships at Bexhill.

A couple of weeks later, on January 18, the Sussex Masters will take place at Coombe Farm, Lancing.

THen, on January 25, the South of England will be ran around Parliament Hill Fields in Hampstead before the Nationals on February 22 at Nottingham.

THe iconic club’s Corporate and schools Challenge are scheduled for February 26, March 11 and March 25 (all Wednesdays) with the Sussex Road Relays at Christ Hospital School on Saturday, April 4.

Trampolining DRAGONFLYERS' Lucy Hijmans and Libby Morton, pictured below, claimed yet further national success after the pair landed medals at the synchro league 15 plus mixed category.

THe duo's mirrored performance and excellent form scores ranks them at the top of the league table after three events.

THis is already enough for the pair to compete at the national league finals to be held in Derby in November.

Linda O'Leary, coach of the Bognor-based club, described it as a "phenomenal achievement In their first year in this age group".

THe girls' excellent form extended to individual performances, too, after both qualified for the League Two 15 to 16 years finals.

After landing 9th and 11th place finishes in Nottingham, Morton and Hijmans are now ranked 11th and 13th respectively in national standings for their grouping.

Team-mate Zoe Maskell took 13th spot in League THree 13 to 14 years at this event. Her overall ranking of 23rd in what is her first year on the national circuit also gains her a place at finals.

Derby to kick season off for Blues CHICHESTER RFC are all set to kick off the new campaign with a home derby against Sussex rivals Horsham tomorrow (3pm).

THe Blues had an inconsistent season in London One South last time out, rounding off with a bottom half finish.

Paul Colley's side will now be tasked with trying to better that this time round, while bringing through a number of younger players from the colts.

Blues have been in good form in a series of pre-season warm-up matches, chalking up victories away at London Two South West side Winchester and Wimbourne.

Now, the competitive action starts - with newly-promoted Horsham providing an interesting test for a fully-fit Chi squad which is raring to go.

London One South finished with a particularly close climax last season with Brighton sneaking into the play-off position ahead of Camberley and Medway in the final match last year.

THere are no relegated teams from London South East Premier. But that does not make the division any less competitive.

With four promoted teams, each with their

own aspirations and levels of confidence, a league transfer in the form of HAC and heavily Westcombe Park and Camberley investing in recruitment, the challenge is obvious.

Combined with the perennial challenge of Medway and some resurgent teams in the forms of THurrock and Havant, it is without doubt going to throw up regular challenges to the Blues squad.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor get their season underway with a home match against Fordingbridge tomorrow (3pm).

THe Purple and Greens were among the standout performers in the division last season, pushing for promotion until the last couple of weeks of the season.

In the end, they had to settle for a thirdplace finish - giving plenty of incentive for the team to improve on that in 2019/20.

Bognor will be boosted with the start of the club's academy of 16 and 17-year-olds who have recently returned from their first successful trip away.

Fourth spot is sealed by Mid MIDDLETON CC sealed a top four finish in the Sussex Premier Division after a comfortable five wicket win over Mayfield.

Sean Heather's side have been in excellent form all season, pushing many more established top level sides all the way in a series of close matches.

Central to that form has been Middleton's batting, with the skipper and overseas player, Mahesh Rawat, racking up close to 2,000 runs between them over the course of 17 games.

It has been enough to see the pair finish first and second in the Premier Division batting rankings, with the Indian streaks ahead at the top of the charts.

In total, Rawat scored 1,041 runs at an average of close to 150 - an astonishing record for a batter who has made the number five spot his own.

THe Indian, who is in his second season at Sea Lane, was the star once again in the victory at relegated Mayfield last weekend.

After putting in the hosts, Middleton's Jack Carson (3-49) made quick inroads into the

home side's line up, reducing them to 29-3.

But as was the case in the return fixture, Sri Lankan Kaushal Silva proved to be a difficult nut to crack.

THe number three anchored the Mayfield's innings, scoring 90 off 88 balls before being the ninth man out for the home side.

By that time Mayfield had reached 197, with the final pair adding eight more runs to set Middleton 206 to win.

In reply, the visitors looked to be struggling when Heather (24) fell with the score at 40-4.

But Rawat found a capable partner in Carson, with the pair putting on 98 for the fifth wicket to put Middleton well on their way.

When Carson fell for 47, they were still 67 runs short.

But the Indian kept on pushing, hitting a quick-fire unbeaten 80 off 71 balls to guide them home.

With East Grinstead and Preston Nomads both slipping up, it saw Middleton jump up to fourth in the standings - an excellent return for the club.

BOGNOR suffered a final day of the season heartbreak after narrowly missed out on promotion to the Sussex Premier Division.

Excellent form by Ryan Maskell's side in the second half of the season put the Regis Oval side well in contention for one of two spots at the top of Division Two. Going into the final weekend, Bognor sat in second knowing victory at fourth-placed St James's Montefiore would seal their place in the top tier in 2020.

But a five wicket loss to the Ditchling side combined with wins for Hastings & St Leonards and Haywards Heath saw Maskell's side miss out.

Bognor got off to the worst possible start when their two form men - Roy Kaia and Maskell - were dismissed with just 12 runs on the board.

It was left to Mike Harris (43) to try to rebuild, with support from Joe Ashmore (26) and Joel Baker (31).

But St James's kept on chipping away to eventually bowl out the visitors for just 202 from their 45 overs.

It was unlikely to be enough unless Bognor's bowlers really turned the screw.

But they couldn't get the breakthrough as opener Toby Pullan smashed 41 off 37 balls to get the home side's chase underway.

Fellow opener Harry Rollings was more pedestrian but his unbeaten score of 97* helped the Ditchling side to victory with more than ten overs and five wickets in hand.

Fellow Division One side Chichester Priory Park were unable to do either side any favours when they came up well short against Haywards Heath.

A century from Johnny Phelps (100) helped the visitors reach 241-7 off their 45 overs at Goodwood.

THe weather delayed Priory's reply but it only put off the inevitable with only Charlie Futcher (73) showing any real resistance to the visitors' attack.

Chi were eventually bowled out for 158, well short of their revised target of 242.

In Division THree West, Pagham ended the season in fourth after a 45-run loss to secondplace Worthing.

Nick Smith (3-36) was the pick of the bowlers as the visitors reached 247-9, a score Pagham were unable to reach despite opener Jack Stannard hitting 63.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the club now have an attacking trio to fire the Rocks to success.

Supporters of the Nyewood Lane side will no doubt be disappointed with the club's start to the Isthmian Premier campaign which has seen them pick up just four points from their opening five games.

THe latest - a 2-0 defeat at home to promotion challengers Carshalton Athletic last weekend - leaves Rocks 18th after the first month of the season.

After falling behind to two first half goals, Pearce's side did have their chances.

But despite racking up 11 corners and the visitors being reduced to ten men, Rocks were unable to find a way past their opponents.

THere was some silver lining to the defeat, though, with on-loan Portsmouth attacker Bradley Lethbridge, pictured top left, making his first appearance of the season.

THe 18-year-old, who scored ten goals while at the Nye Camp last term, teamed up again with Jimmy Muitt and Dan Smith to form a potentially potent attacking trio.

Pearce believes providing they stay fit then this could propel Bognor up the standings.

He told THe Post: "Getting Brad back is a massive lift for us.

"But we have to remember that he hasn't kicked a ball either for us or Pompey since May. "He's been injured ever since the Sussex Senior Cup final and waiting to come back ever since.

"But once he gets games under his belt, if we can get him, Dan Smith and Jimmy Muitt all fit then those three will be as good as anyone else in the league."

Rocks will take a temporary break from league action tomorrow when they welcome Isthmian South East side Sittingbourne to Nyewood Lane for the first qualifying round of the FA Cup tomorrow (3pm).

Victory would not only boost the confidence of the young side but also earn the club ÂŁ4,000 in prize money.

Pearce said: "I know hardly anything about them. What I do know is that with our confidence at the moment any game will be difficult for us.

"We have trained well this week though and if we play to our full potential then we will be OK. "When you keep losing games of football it affects people even when you have good players.

"We can't dress it up. It was a disappointing week. We need to keep working hard and sticking together."

'Focus must be on defence' "NO ONE is more disappointed than me" - those were the words of Rocks boss Jack Pearce after his young charges slumped to their second defeat in the space of five days.

In both games the Rocks had the better part of large portions of the matches.

Yet a failure to take chances meant that come the final whistle Bognor had fallen to a 3-0 loss at Worthing and 2-0 defeat to Carshalton Athletic.

It's clear that things need to improve, at both ends of the pitch.

THe return of Bradley Lethbridge to fitness will no doubt improve the Rocks' attacking prowess.

But it is at the other end of the pitch where Pearce and coach Robbie Blake will probably want to spend more of their time.

Of last season's starting back five, four are currently unavailable for the club, with only Keaton Wood the mainstay from the Sussex Senior Cup win.

With former skipper Gary Charman leaving the club this week, that leaves James Crane and Wood as the only two fit experienced defenders on the books.

Pearce said: "THere were only two teams in the Isthmian Premier League who lost more games than us last season - that was the champions, Dorking, and Merstham, who made the playoffs.

"THe reason for that is we didn't score.

"Our forward line of Dan Smith, Brad Lethbridge and Jimmy Muitt is as good as

any in the league but after March we never got them back together on the pitch at the same time.

"We seem to have righted that problem by getting them back together again so that's an encouragement."

At the other end of the pitch, Pearce is calling for patience.

He said: "We have lost four of the five who were in our defence last season. When you have only one left, getting that consistency will not happen overnight "THe players are learning and coming together. We shall see, We may be not good enough in that department and we need to sign more players."

A FORTNIGHT go, when I last wrote this column, I thought we had turned a corner.

We'd just beaten Wingate 5-0 and confidence was high heading into a local derby.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and we have been beaten twice, conceding five and scoring none.

In the Worthing game, I thought we were better in the first 20 minutes to half-hour and could have been two of three up.

We didn't take our chances though. If we had, that would have changed the game completely. It would have quietened the crowd and allowed us to take charge.

But when they scored, the game swung away from us.

THe crowd started to get louder and we could not get back into the match. It's the way derby games go sometimes.

In those situations you need characters to pull the side through and I thought we crumbled a bit under the pressure.

THe goals we conceded were terrible and of our own doing.

I thought we may have ironed that out in the game at Wingate but that wasn't the case.

Jack and Robbie had a few things to say at the end of the game. A few fans picked up on comments that Jack made about Tommy Leigh, who made the mistake which led to the second goal.

I think that's just Jack, you have to take things he says with a pinch of salt.

While Tommy is a young lad he's just brushed things off and now we're moving on as a team. It was just a bad day at the office for us on what was a really poor artificial pitch that we did not adapt to.

On a good pitch perhaps some of those errors would not have happened.

We are a young team and do feed on confidence, which

is perhaps why we were poor again against Carshalton.

We seem to have issues when people don't attack - they just sit back and somehow score goals. I can't watch it back as it infuriates me so much!

THey did not cut us open at all, they just soaked up our attacks, cleared the ball and somehow took the lead.

While it is true that we have not scored for two games, it is defence which is crucial as if we don't concede then we will still get a point.

Most strikers are confidence players, which means they will go through patches.

But when defending you need to be consistent all the time as if you make a mistake then it will be a goal.

We need to work at it as a team and hopefully the results will come.

We have a great opportunity to do that in the FA Cup against Sittingbourne tomorrow.

I don't know much about the opponents, given we do not play in the same division as them.

But one thing that's certain is we owe the fans a performance, we owe the manager and the staff a performance and we owe ourselves a performance.

We need to make sure we deliver as it's not been good enough of late.

It's also good to be playing in the FA Cup. It's a tournament I like playing in. We haven’t had a run in it since I've been with the club so it would be nice to reach the first round if we can.

THere's always a financial element to the club involved the further we go. But for the players it can be a good break from the league, often playing against new teams which can help in the long run.

A lot of fans will have fond memories of the FA Trophy run and it would be nice to do something similar in the FA Cup starting tomorrow.
