Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a £25million funding boost for hospices and palliative care services in England.

A TRADES council is being relaunched in the city with an open meeting.

Chichester District Trades Council is holding the open meeting for all local trade unionists on Monday, from 7pm in THeatre House in THeatre Lane.

A number of local trade unions have registered in advance.

Phil Wilson, from Chichester District Trades Council, said: "With a potential no deal Brexit and future trades agreements which could further undermine workers' rights, it is vital that local trade unions work together to support and defend the rights that millions enjoy."

Concern has recently been expressed about new contracts and working conditions being experienced by Asda staff in Selsey.

Postal workers at Royal Mail's Chichester delivery office could be balloted over claims of national management bullying and allegations that previous agreements have not been adhered to.

CWU members working for Royal Mail are to be balloted for strike action over job security, an alleged culture of

bullying and their terms and conditions of their employment.

THe ballot of more than 100,000 members is set to begin on September 24, with the result expected in early October.

Funding for school travel with grants from children's charity SCHOOLS will be eligible to claim up to £250 each towards travel expenses following the introduction of an initiative by children’s charity Tuppenny Barn in Southbourne.

A pioneering travel grant scheme to be launched on Tuesday, September 17, will enable more school children to visit the fruit and vegetable plots to learn more about the food chain, biodiversity and the therapeutic value of the 'great outdoors'.

THe scheme has been made possible following the support of a number of local and national funders including THe Sussex Community Foundation, THe Ninevah Trust, THe Bassil Shippam and Alsford Trust, THe D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, THe Southern Co-operatives: Westbourne and Southbourne and the Southleigh Road Coop.

A total of £7,500 will be available to schools with 15 per cent or more pupils on free school meals within a 20-mile radius of Tuppenny Barn.

It is estimated the scheme will enable up to 900 children from areas of deprivation to attend the programme.

THe travel project will also support the charity’s goal of reaching out to 2,000 children annually by 2021.

When Maggie Hayes, founder and CEO of Tuppenny Barn, launched her organic enterprise in 2005, her mission was to inform and educate the public, particularly young people, about healthy eating.

"We're really looking forward to launching our travel grant scheme which will enable more children to access our food education programme," she said.

THe event, delivered by Chichester District Council with support from the Chichester Business Improvement District (BID), encouraged residents, workers and visitors to the city centre to celebrate the high street.

Many shops and businesses took part and stayed open late to host in-store activities and refreshments.

“I would like to thank everyone who

came along to the Chichester Summer Street Party,” said Cllr Norma Graves, cabinet member for corporate services, communications, licensing and events.

“We were delighted to see crowds of people gathered in East and North Street throughout the evening, enjoying the fantastic entertainment, delicious street food, and music from Spirit FM. “THe children were kept entertained by the fascinating bubble show, carousel, and face painting and by the wealth of activities put on by local groups and organisations.

“We are very grateful to the Co-op, which is opening a new store in East

Street on October, 25 for sponsoring the event and helping us to showcase all that Chichester has to offer — from unique and independent stores, through to major brands.

"It's vital that we support our local high streets, particularly in the current financial climate, and this is a fantastic way to bring everyone together to celebrate our city,” said Cllr Graves.

Visitors also had the opportunity to give their feedback on the event for a chance to win two free tickets to a Goodwood race event in 2020.

THe winner is due to be announced on the council’s social media channels today.

` Witness appeal POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision between a car and a pedal cycle in Chichester.

THe accident occurred at around 4.10pm on Friday at the junction of Sherbourne Road and Oliver Whitby Road on the western side of the city.

THe cyclist, an 84-year local man, was taken by ambulance to St Richards Hospital, Chichester, with a serious head injury. He is currently in a stable condition.

It is believed that the car involved did not stop at the scene.

Anyone who saw what happened or who has relevant dash-cam or closed circuit television images is asked to contact Sussex Police online, by emailing: collision. appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Dartmoor.

` Car park delays QUEUES for a car park in the district caused hours of delays for visitors and residents over the bank holiday weekend.

Some people visiting West Wittering beach on Sunday, August 25, reported that they were stuck in their cars for up to five hours after leaving the car park.

Reports included people stating they were gridlocked in queues stretching from the car park through to the A27.

Chichester Post contacted the West Wittering Estate Plc who manage the car park, for a comment but at the time of going to print, no reply was received.

Green light for the city's car-free day

Car(e) Free Day Chichester organisers have been granted permission by Chichester District Council for their community event on Sunday, September 22.

THe group has previously consulted residents and business owners as part of preparations for the day.

THe street closure order for South Street from its junction with THeatre Lane to the Market Cross will be between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

Mark Record, who helped initiate the idea of a car-free day said: "THis is very good news as it will allow us to run an event that jointly promotes environmentally sustainable modes of transport while simultaneously encouraging people (particularly the young) to engage with healthy exercise.

"It will be a challenge to get everything in place in time for September 22 but I am sure we can organise towards a successful event."

Dozens of entries for a poster competition promoting the Car Free Chichester were taken up by pupils at Lavant Primary School and Jessie Younghusband School last month.

Supported by district and city councillor, Sarah Sharp, the Chichester Post and businesses which provided prizes, Stagecoach, Westgate Leisure

Centre and the Picturedrome Cinema in Bognor Regis, entrants were asked to draw a picture of what they would like to see or do in the streets on a day without cars.

Chichester Car Free Day campaigners are planning a small-scale three-hour event in Chichester.

THeir intention is to arrange a 'playing out order' for South Street so that people, especially children, can enjoy a mini street festival on International Car Free Day. Chichester Mayor, Cllr Richard Plowman, did not feel the idea of a carfree day was very practical.

He said: "As a way to highlight as a protest that we need to move to much more sustainable means of transport, walk and cycle more, then I think it is a good thing, given we have declared a climate change emergency in Chichester.

"As a measure to stop cars altogether coming into Chichester, it is not practical.

"For example, many workers rely heavily on cars for getting to work with no alternative so the businesses open on Sunday would suffer.

"Many people live within the city walls and when suggested previously they gave good reasons such as the need to get to hospital in an emergency or regular daily care needs.

"A move to make the city centre free from fossil fuel powered vehicles including delivery vehicles with good cycle and pedestrian routes is high on the agenda in the neighbourhood plan."

A&E at the city hospital sees record number of patients A RECORD number of people attended the emergency departments at Western Sussex Hospitals in July.

More than 13,840 patients went into the A&E departments in Chichester and Worthing – five per cent more than the previous record number of attendances in a month, in May, 2019.

As a result, hospital doctors are encouraging people to seek advice from NHS 111, a local GP or by visiting: nhs.uk unless the condition is serious or life-threatening.

Dr George Findlay, chief medical officer at Western Sussex Hospitals, said: "In July, our A&E departments saw an unprecedented number of people attend.

"But not everyone who attends our units in Worthing and Chichester has come to the right place to receive the right care for them.

"Across the country, one in four people who go to A&E could receive effective care and treatment from other NHS services.

"If you’re not a real emergency, you could get quicker treatment closer to home by calling 111 or visiting your local pharmacist.

"THat allows A&E teams to be able to focus on people suffering from strokes, heart attacks and other lifethreatening injuries and illnesses."

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had the ninth best A&E performance in England last year, helping it to secure millions of pounds to spend on new equipment for patients.

Meeting the A&E waiting time targets and generating a £1.2 million financial surplus earned the trust an additional £27 million of central funding for capital investment.

City's football club signs a new lease at Oaklands Park

CHICHESTER City Football Club has kick started its 2019/2020 season by signing a new lease with Chichester District Council for its home in Oaklands Park.

THe signing of the new lease has happened just in time to help the club start what it hopes will be a ‘goal scoring’ season for all sections of the club.

"We want to work closely with the club to make sure that it thrives and encourages the development of football across the district," said Cllr Roy Briscoe, cabinet member for community services and culture at the district council.

"We have worked really hard with the club to make sure that they are in a positive and sustainable position, and so we are pleased that we can offer them a new lease for the grounds in Oaklands Park.

"Local football clubs and grassroots football are really important to local communities.

"We are looking forward to supporting the club with what we hope will be a very successful season."

THe council is also keen to work with the club to improve facilities at the ground and investigate opportunities for grant funding to support this.

Wayne Dalton, the club's general manager, was excited about news of the lease and relished the opportunity to

work closer with the council.

"Over the past 18 months, we have worked very hard to get this club back to where it needed to be.

"We are proud of the achievements we have made over the past few years, both on and off the pitch.

"Securing the lease from the district council has been the biggest statement of purpose that this club has made in recent years.

"We are a club that wants to build

stronger links with the community, and we are seeking ways to further support the provision of youth football in the local area.

"We would like to look into the possibility of developing an artificial pitch facility at our Oaklands Park ground, which will increase opportunities for use of the pitch by the local community.

"Other clubs at our level have experienced great success with this and we are willing to learn from others on

Funeral directors celebrate success of their apprenticeship in Witterings CO-OP Funeralcare in East Wittering is celebrating another recruit joining the apprenticeship scheme since launching the programme in 2013.

THe news follows a recent report, backed

by Justine Greening MP, which finds apprenticeships can improve social mobility, increase productivity and develop a skilled workforce in areas which might otherwise lack opportunities.

THis year, the programme will be nearing its 2,500th apprentice recruit since its launch with an age of applicants currently ranging in age from 21 to 71.

Katie Holland, the newest recruit to the programme has a background working in management, administration roles and biological surveying before joining as an apprentice this summer.

She said: "As a full-time employee, I am advised to dedicate 20 per cent of my week to the apprenticeship. I receive plenty of support, contact and visits from my assigned apprenticeship coach as well as guidance from my managers.

"Nothing beats learning on the job and incorporating your new found skills into your daily work practices. It’s hugely motivating to know that the company you are working for is investing in you and offering you the opportunity to progress up the career path."

Karen Seth, people director for Co-op Funeral and Life Planning, added: "Working within the funeral industry can be an extremely rewarding and satisfying career. Our apprentices at F A Holland Funeralcare prove that and we’re still attracting such a strong pool of applicants six years since the launch.

"Our intention has always been to provide people from all backgrounds with the opportunity to develop a worthwhile career in funerals and to improve social mobility in

` Increase in police officers after report POLICE are continuing to focus efforts on investigating and preventing the sexual and physical abuse of vulnerable people in Sussex, as news comes of the increased reporting of rapes country and county-wide.

A report by the national Rape Monitoring Group shows that the recording of rape in Sussex in line with other forces has increased again.

In the 12 months to March 31, 2018, 1,381 reports were recorded in Sussex, an increase of 325 from the 2016/2017 figure.

More officers and staff have been added to specialist safeguarding investigation units across the county who are dealing with this increase, thanks to additional funding secured by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

THis increase in staffing includes the recruitment, training and deployment of 24 sexual offence investigation trained police officers and staff.

THis team is dedicated to the contact and care of people aged over 14 who report rape and other serious sexual offences.

Katy Bourne said: "THose who take the brave and often lifechanging decision to come forward to police to report rape and sexual assault should, at the very least, expect that every reasonable effort will be made to bring perpetrators to justice."

Priding themselves on their genuine decorations and traditional dishes, it is the latest trendy place to go in Bognor.

At first glance, it looks like any other kebab shop but inside is a restaurant with character, good food and friendly staff ready to cater for your every need.

While I’m sure many locals know of the Bognor Charcoal Grill as the takeaway opposite the station, this year owner Orhan Gundogeu decided to expand into the premises next door.

This expansion provided them with the opportunity to open up a more formal restaurant.

They combine all the elements of a traditional Turkish kitchen, with an extensive menu including a variety of both hot and cold meze platters, as well as kebabs and

vegetarian dishes.

Orhan said: “After having an amazing journey to success, we wanted to offer more food from our culture and did this by converting into a restaurant.

“It’s designed in a way to give that contemporary look as well as still having the underlying Turkish background running throughout.

“We have a wide range of amazing dishes and there is something for everyone.

"From salads to soups, kebabs to desserts - you name it. We have the best and most iconic dishes from Turkey."

As well as expanding in the restaurant side of things, they now also have a bar, fully stocked and ready for the perfect drink to accompany your meal.

The building was spotlessly clean and filled with balloons and music ready for their official last Tuesday.

Orhan made it clear that when opening the restaurant their first priority was ensuring that it is as authentic as it can be.

He said: “This is proper authentic food.

When you eat here you feel like you are Turkish. Everything is Turkish, everything is made there and bought over. My designer was back home and had everything made and designed in that genuine style.”

Even the toilet is like no-other, black tiled flooring and sink combined with an eyecatching gold sink makes even your breaks from the table feel luxurious.

From floor to ceiling, kitchen to toilet, the whole venue is decorated with Turkish furnishings. Even the chairs and tables are imported from overseas.

Window scenes of Istanbul cover the walls, meaning you can enjoy your meals while having views of the iconic Galata Kulesi tower, or overlook Kiz Kulesi, the Maiden's Tower.

Turkish tea is the perfect finish to your meal, particularly when accompanied by some traditional Turkish delight. The golden tea is poured into a small glass and served in a Turkish tea cup, traditional of course.

Orhan said: “I thought it would be nice to have something new for Bognor Regis.

"We already have a good takeaway and something new for the area with good food and good service is just what we need “It is an authentic Turkish restaurant with professional chefs, they’re the best. We've been running for seven years next door in the kebab shop. This building was an Indian takeaway but unfortunately they couldn't run it anymore and closed.

"We took over and grabbed the opportunity to open the new restaurant. It was perfect timing and a perfect opportunity."

Orhan focused on perfecting a quintessential Turkish kitchen. “It was and still is, a family owned business,” he said. “We aim to bring the best of Turkey to Bognor.

An out of this world exhibit

THIS autumn, the city's museum is set to unleash a band of weird and wonderful aliens, zombies and monsters with the launch of a fun, interactive and immersive new exhibition.

Created by Brighton-based children’s writer and illustrator, Aaron Blecha, Aliens, Zombies & Monsters: THe Weird World of Aaron Blecha, opens at THe Novium Museum in Chichester from Saturday, September 28.

THe show will be packed full of life-sized aliens, zombies and monsters, ready to mingle with visitors of all ages. Beam aboard an alien spaceship, take a selfie as part of the zombie family, or join in with the monster mayhem!

Aaron Bletcha is best known for books such as Goodnight, Grizzle Grump! and the Shark School series. THe exhibition will give visitors a unique behind-the-scenes peek into the process behind his work, from the initial concept and doodles, to the creation of characters and finished books.

Aaron has created four new characters exclusively for the exhibition, all of which have been inspired by the Chichester area: • THe Roman Bath House Monster • Tim Peake’s Alien Co-Pilot • THe Boxgrove Zombie • THe Smuggler Monster Visitors will be able to get creative and

suggest names for these characters in a competition, which will run alongside the exhibition.

“THe Chichester district has so much history for us to be proud of,” says Cllr Roy Briscoe, cabinet member for community services and culture.

“It is great to see some fun and creative interpretations that will engage children in our rich heritage from a different angle.

We are really looking forward to the arrival of our new resident aliens, zombies and monsters and hope that visitors will be inspired to add their own creations to the exhibition.

“THe exhibition will include a creation station where visitors can draw their own characters and display them within the exhibition.

"It will also include an area that resembles Aaron’s workspace and three films showing the creation of some of Aaron’s characters.”

Exhibition creator Aaron Blecha added: “I want to show children, parents, teachers (everyone!) that it is possible for kids to utilise their talent, creativity, and imagination to create stories and the characters that live within them.

"It’s okay to be fun, silly and to let your imagination go!”

Children do like to be beside the seaside at city's cathedral CHICHESTER Cathedral was delighted to host an exciting day of activities for the area's families.

In partnership with Family Support Work and Home-Start Chichester & District, around 130 children and their families who are supported by these organisations took part in a day packed with crafts and games.

With a theme of ‘Beside the Seaside’, activities inside the cathedral included a self-guided trail, brass rubbing, creative crafts such as making kites, boats, seagulls and postcards, while outside in the cathedral grounds there were games and storytelling sessions.

Print maker Cath Bristow worked with the families to make a new side panel for the cathedral’s Creative Play Pod, where the storytelling sessions took place.

Cath has been a regular at recent family days and other group activities, creating panels that link to different inspiring themes and is working to gradually adorn the pod with fully completed panels.

Food waste charity UK Harvest

provided lunch for everyone.

Alongside staff, around 20 cathedral volunteers helped to support families throughout the day.

THe Dean of Chichester, the Very Reverend Stephen Waine, was delighted that it was such a success.

He said: "Involving and supporting children, young people and their families is central to the cathedral’s learning and engagement activities across the diocese.

"It was clear how much everyone enjoyed themselves here today, and we are very pleased to be working on an ongoing basis to deliver both fun activities and practical support in the future.

"We are grateful for the financial support of Chichester District Council to enable this to continue.”

THe event was also attended by THe Diocesan Bishop’s Champions for Family Support Work, Caroline Lucas and Caroline Nicholls, former High Sheriff of West Sussex.

` Walking festival IT’S just over a week to go until the first ever Chichester Walking Weekend, September 6-8.

With over 21 different walks now taking place - including three new walks which were added to the schedule just this week - the event showcases the Chichester region's wide range of walks.

Organised by Visit Chichester and THe Ramblers Association South West Sussex Group, the Walking Weekend includes walks for all ages and abilities, and most importantly, most walks are free!

THree new walks, operated by Chichester Tour Guides, have been added to the schedule just this week.

One is a guided walk in the footsteps of travellers and pilgrims, taking place on the Friday morning (10.45am) follows the footsteps of pilgrims, travellers and tradesmen from the 13th century onwards from St Mary’s Hospital, to the Shrine of St Richard and through to Chichester’s streets.

For those more taken with the coast, join Dr Bill Martin from the Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group on the fascinating All Aboard Gentle Stroll (two miles) around the seaside haven of Selsey.

With spaces filling fast and some walks now fully booked organisers are encouraging interested participants to register now to avoid disappointment.

Turning up the heat at the Goodwood holiday races

FROM the sensational fireworks display that took place on Friday evening, to superb performances on the track, the August bank holiday fixture at Goodwood Racecourse was nothing short of spectacular, with glorious weather to match.

On Friday evening, Volkan Star was a sensational winner of THe European Breeders Fund EBF Novice Stakes, trouncing his rivals by an impressive six lengths to justify the £1million price tag paid by Godolphin for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

After racing, the very popular Batala drummers set a hypnotic beat, drawing crowds from around the stands before fireworks lit up the night sky. THe crowd were so impressed that there was rapturous applause and cheers after the finale.

On Saturday, Duke Of Hazzard got the better of Turgenev in the Group 2 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile, heralding jockey, Rossa Ryan’s, biggest career win to date. THe three-year-old now has a Group 1 entry in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Ryan, 19, who is in his first year after riding out his claim, commented: “I didn’t sleep well last night and spent a lot of time on my tablet, working out what might happen and how the race would go."

Run in memory of local trainer John Dunlop, it was Sir Ron Priestley who obliged, becoming the third Qatar Goodwood Festival winner to follow up with a win at the meeting.

Having been headed by the strong travelling Promissory, he won convincingly, under a confident ride from Franny Norton. John Dunlop’s wife, Sue, was on hand to present the trophy

for the race to trainer, Deirdre Johnston, and owner Paul Dean.

On Sunday, the warm weather continued to grace the Sussex Downs with Oisin Murphy enjoying a good day with two winners. THe first came aboard Queen’s Soldier in THe Chichester City Selling Stakes, before Le Don De Vie followed up in THe Ladbrokes Handicap Stakes.

City turns back the clock in time for vintage shop to help boost hospice

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk QUEUES ran down the stairs on Friday at the Assembly Rooms in North Street as people early awaited the opening of a pop-up vintage shop.

St Wilfrid's Hospice hold a Retro and Vintage Affair event each year to help raise funds for their vital services to the district.

THere was a huge selection of dresses, jackets, suits, trousers, skirts, coats, sheepskin and faux fur coats, bags, shoes, jewellery and a collection of vinyl.

Chichester's favourite singer of all things vintage, Dawn Gracie, got the day off to a lively start with her unique style of hits.

She told the Chichester Post: "When I first started doing vintage entertainment back in 2011, St Wilfrid's Hospice was one of the first places I actually approached about offering my services to go and sing in the hospice and I did that for many years.

"THen they asked me to do this and I've been doing it ever since! I sing to a lot of people with dementia and lifelimiting conditions and knowing that singing songs from the 50s and 60s brings so much pleasure, that's my small contribution to happiness.

"Anything to fundraise for St Wilfrid's, they have got my time.

"To be nestled among vintage clothing is where I most feel at home!"

Mark Lewis Hair Salon proved incredibly popular again this year, with Martins’ scissors and straighteners never ceasing all day!

Vintage Tea Rooms did a particularly sterling job with cakes baked and donated by friends and staff of St Wilfrid’s adding hundreds of pounds to the takings on the day.

THese funds will soon be put to great use providing first class end of life care in the community with St Wilfrid’s Hospice at Home scheme.

Louise Drudge, retail manager for St Wilfrid’s Vintage store in Chichester, said: "After the rush of the first hour we had a steady stream of visitors all day.

We really appreciate everyone who came out to support St Wilfrid’s and bag themselves a bargain."

Jo Horwood, from Eastergate, said she thought the day was a lovely and jolly event. She said: "I wear a lot of vintage clothes so I just look for things I want to wear.

"It's a brilliant fundraiser and all the women are so nice to one another.

You go into the changing room and it's completely makeshift.

"THere can be dozens of women in there, trying piles of stuff on but everyone helps one another.

"THey say 'that looks great on you' or 'I will do your zip up'. People ask for advice or tell you the year the outfit is from. It's just wonderful camaraderie."

Teresa Dawson travels from Windsor every year for the vintage fair. She said: "I'm a dressmaker and I make a lot of vintage clothes so I look for patterns, fabrics, buttons and embellishments.

"It's getting harder and harder to source vintage things. Every year it feels harder to find good quality stuff.

"Everyone at the event has one thing in common - we are all interested in vintage items. It's one of the best ones I go to.

"It's very well organised and very well set up. A lot of the people are volunteering and they work so hard."

` Music concert REPRISING a concert which they gave in 2017, the Central Band of the Royal British Legion and the Winchester Military Wives Choir will be returning to St Paul’s Church on Saturday, September 14, for a concert promoted by Chichester.

Rotary Club THe club is celebrating its centenary, having been chartered in May, 1920, following its first meeting in December, 1919.

THe Central Band, under its conductor, Capt David Cole, took part in June’s D-Day commemorations and accompanied the veterans to France on Boudicca. THey next played at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon and recently completed a week-long series of concerts in Eastbourne.

THe Winchester Military Wives Choir was founded in 2014 and as well as giving many perormances locally has taken part in the West End production of “Soldier On” and helped with the recording of “Remember”, the Military Wives’ contribution to the centenary celebrations of the end of World War One. Rotary president David Rigglesford said: "We are extremely fortunate that such talented and renowned performers have agreed to help us celebrate the centenary of our club."

A Mini adventure in district

TV's THe Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) favourite Ricky Rayment was raising temperatures at the motor circuit when he joined in the fun.

He was on hand to help Jon Spriggs launch his inaugural ‘Minis At Goodwood’ event supporting Freddie St George’s Italian Job charity rally and children’s charity Buttle UK. With Ricky’s help, the Goodwood event raised more than £10,000 for Buttle UK – a grant-giving charity that provides vulnerable children and young people with ‘chances for children’ grants up to £2,000 to help them overcome crisis and create a better future for themselves Jon’s event, which has been held in recent years at the Top Gear Test Track in Dunsfold, as well as raising money for the children, was also designed to give a taster for the Italian Job rally which takes place each year in Italy during October.

Ricky joined 143 Mini cars of all shapes, ages and sizes to drive around the track and carry out various navigational tasks under the watchful eyes of Freddie and Jon. It was for Ricky, who is a self-confessed petrol head, the first time at Goodwood.

By all accounts, it certainly won’t be his last.

Buttle UK chief executive Joe Howes said: "It was really kind of Ricky to give up time over the bank holiday weekend to support Jon and Freddie in their fundraising.

"It is a great honour for Buttle UK to be

the official charity of the Italian Job rally.

"All 100 per cent of the funds raised today will go directly to help children who need a chance in life.

"We have shown over the years that it's small interventions that can set a child a much better life trajectory. THe funds raised today are going to make a difference to a considerable number of children."

THe Italian Job rally, one of the most enjoyable events in the social motoring calendar, is celebrating its landmark 30th anniversary.

THe ten-day trip follows in the tyre tracks of Michael Caine’s 1969 iconic caper film THe Italian Job, which also marks its 50th anniversary this year.

To date, Hove-based Freddie St George and his mother, Guilia St George, have raised over £2.7m from the Italian Job rally to help children’s charities.

Masala City gets top spot WINNERS of the ninth annual English Curry Awards 2019 have been announced following a wave of nominations from across the country.

Masala City in Chichester won in the Restaurant of the Year, south east category, beating all Indian restaurants in the region to be crowned number one.

THe restaurant in St Pancras received the award at a lavish ceremony in Birmingham last week.

THe awards aim to recognise and reward the hard work, determination and dedication of those in the country’s booming curry industry.

EAGLE-EYED readers will notice a familiar landmark on the front cover of a local author’s latest book.

Provenance, by Steven F. Galloway, is set in the world of art and tells the story of National Gallery employee Charlie Marks, who inherits a painting which could be a lost work by a legendary Old Master or, it could be a worthless fake.

Charlie, alongside young colleague Devon, embarks on a quest to prove the painting’s Provenance, but it soon transpires that someone else is after the painting, and they’re prepared to kill to get it.

As the mystery around the picture’s past deepens Charlie finds himself drawn into a tangled history which takes him all the way back to World War Two and his own family’s past.

Chichester-based author Steven, 38, who also works as a college lecturer, drew inspiration from his own interest in art, and in particular visits to London’s National Gallery and Chichester’s Pallant House Gallery.

"Charlie’s a bit like me, in that he has an interest in art but is by no means an expert," he said.

"He goes on a voyage of discovery throughout the book, and soon his mission to prove the painting’ provenance becomes the most important thing in his life.

"When it came to creating a front cover image for the book, Pallant House Gallery seemed like the ideal backdrop.

"It’s a place which helped spark my interest in art, and it’s just around the corner from me.

"We’re lucky in Chichester to have such a fabulous place on our doorstep."

Harbour's microplastics

CHICHESTER Harbour Conservancy welcomed more than 75 attendees to a symposium which focused on the impact of microplastics and microfibres in the harbour.

THe event was organised to bring together a range of experts in order to share recent research, and prompt further discussion about the impact of microplastics on the environment.

Chichester Harbour is an important area for scientific research, acting as a microcosm for how microplastics are affecting many seas and oceans.

Dr Corina Ciocan, senior lecturer in marine biology, University of Brighton,

noted that more than 1.5 million tons of microplastics waste is being generated per year - or the equivalent of one empty conventional plastic grocery bag thrown into the ocean per person/per week worldwide.

Microplastics (generally those pieces less than 5mm in size) and microfibres have a growing and significant presence in today's environment. Her research revealed that there are an astonishing 10,000 microfibres per litre in the top layer of Chichester Harbour's seawater. THe implications of this are yet to be fully understood and further research needs to take place.

David Jones, researcher and founder of Just One Ocean, said: "THe explosion of our ‘plastic society' - which began in the 1950s and 1960s - has led to some worrying outcomes - in effect today's consumer

society is either destroying habitats or fundamentally changing them."

Richard Craven, director and harbour master at Chichester Harbour Conservancy, concluded: "Chichester Harbour is a highly designated and highly protected area of the south coast and yet we are still seeing significant impact on its water quality as a result of microplastics.

"It was important for us to bring a range of experts and interested parties together to review what we know about microplastics in Chichester Harbour - and share our collective information more extensively.

"We now need to build on this knowledge, while raising awareness of the processes bringing microplastics into the harbour and encouraging steps to halt them."

Charity skydive JON ROBBINS, a secondary school drama teacher, took to the skies to skydive for Pregnancy Options Centre in Chichester.

THe daring jump took place in Devon with Skydive BUZZ from a scary 15,000 metres – the highest without the use of oxygen in the UK. Pregnancy Options Centre provides free, non-directive support to women and men facing unplanned pregnancy or struggling following a pregnancy loss or an abortion.

THe centre provides over 220 hours of free counselling each year and is the only service of its kind in the area.

THe charity also delivers interactive sessions to over nine local schools on healthy sex and relationships, consent and online safety within the PSHE

curriculum.

Jon has seen first-hand the difference that Pregnancy Options Centre in St John’s Street, Chichester, can make to young people in his school.

He said: "As a teacher, I have seen the positive impact the education sessions have on young people, building selfworth and understanding among those in the sessions.

"THe day was a great success with amazing weather to complete the jump.”

Anna Madge, chief executive, said “We would like to thank everyone who supported Jon in his sponsored Skydive.

"It is great to have a teacher from a school we work with get alongside us as they know best how important it is to discuss topics surrounding healthy relationships with their young people."

City's law firm sees silver with armed forces award

THe company, which employs 3,000 people and has 15 offices across the UK, including a Chichester office, has won a silver award under the Ministry of Defence’s employer recognition scheme.

THe scheme recognises employers who employ and support reservists, veterans, the military and their families.

Mitchell’s group chief executive, Andrew Tucker, to mark the award.

Organ donation week at hospital THIS YEAR’S Organ Donation Week runs from Monday to Sunday (September 2-8) and encourages everyone to share their organ donation decision with family and friends.

THe week will also be used to highlight the generosity of donors and the impact they have had on transplant recipients, as well as to educate and inspire people to help save and improve more lives.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Organ Donation Committee chairman Angela Fisher said: “During Organ Donation Week, we want people to talk to their loved ones about organ donation.

“Let them know that being an organ donor can help save lives. It could help your loved ones in the future.”

Specialist nurse for organ donation Tracy THomas agreed: “Organ donation saves lives. It might even save the life of a loved one. Talk to your loved ones, talk to your friends about organ donation and make a difference.”

THe committee reported to the trust board that Tracy played an important role in all 17 discussions held with potential organ donors and their families during the last year.

As a result of those discussions, 12 donors enabled 29 patients to receive a life-saving or life-changing transplants.

THe number of patients waiting for a transplant is still greater than the

number of donor organs available.

During 2018/19, some 19 people in the south east died before they could receive a transplant.

Nationally, more than 6,000 people are currently waiting for an organ.

THree people die each day while on the waiting list.

To help change that situation, a new Max and Keira’s Law will come into effect from spring 2020.

THis will mean all people dying over the age of 18 will be considered a potential organ donor, if they are eligible, unless they have opted out.

Angela added: “Having the law represents a brand new milestone for organ donation. It’s fantastic that from next year more lives will be saved and improved.”

Pupils get lost in the moment at Edinburgh

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS from Chichester College took the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by storm earlier this month, virtually selling out for their week-long run.

THey performed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Greenside at Nicholson Square – putting together a visually stunning show, with eye-catching costumes, to bring the wonderfully weird world of Wonderland to life.

Stage management students were on hand to ensure everything – from lighting and sound to props and costumes – ran smoothly while performing arts students

entertained audiences.

THe week proved to be fantastic opportunity for them to gain hands-on, real-life experience of putting on a show in a busy theatre at one of the biggest theatrical events in the world.

Acting student Charlie Gratwick said: “To be able to go to one of the biggest acting festivals in the world is a very humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

“Everyone is there to share their passion for the arts and it’s amazing.”

Hannah Young, who completed her diploma in production arts in June, added: “Edinburgh was a dream.

“It was such a unique experience to come up with a brilliant company and put

on an incredible show.”

It was the third time Chichester College has taken a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, following on from successful stints with THe Jungle Book in 2018 and Jason and the Golden Fleece in 2017.

Andrew Green, executive principal at the Chichester College Group, produced the show and worked closely with students in Edinburgh. He said: “Every year the show gets bigger and better, and this really was our biggest year yet.

“I’m incredibly proud of them and of the staff who have supported them over the past few months, ensuring they could get the absolute most out of this fantastic opportunity.”

Graham focuses on gardens' appeal Rhythms and Riffs West Dean College (garden entrance), West Dean PO18 0RX Until September 4, 10am - 5pm A FUNDRAISING appeal for the restoration of the magnificent Victorian glasshouses at West Dean Gardens will benefit from an exhibition of photographs in THe Edward James Studios at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

Rhythms and Riffs comprises images taken by Graham Murrell, who is a former head of photography at the prestigious Central St Martins College of Art in London.

For the past couple of years, he has been casting a

discerning eye over West Dean Gardens and later within the house.

In the gardens, he has been drawn to photograph using medium format film and traditional processes the visual notes and chords that together comprise the wonderful composition created over the past 29 years.

In the house he has referred to its Surrealist past in homage to the movement supported and encouraged

by Edward James, who lived in the house and was a patron of the arts.

THis is a selling exhibition with all proceeds in support of the West Dean Gardens Glasshouse Appeal. Entry is free.

THe Grade II Listed glasshouses, built during the 1890s by Foster and Pearson, were at the forefront of

Victorian technology. Today, they provide a nursery to almost every plant that makes its way into the gardens and somewhere to learn about growing and looking after plants.

After the Great Storm of 1987, one of the first jobs was to restore all 13 glasshouses to full working order. Subsequently, former head gardeners Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain re-created 26 different growing environments within the glasshouses, from traditional figs and melons to new and exotic red hot chillies.

THirty years on and, with improved techniques in restoration techniques, just four glasshouses are left to repair and it is hoped to finish all of these by 2020 but £29,000 is needed to complete these works.

training of the choir, and appearing on numerous recordings and broadcasts. Since 2011 he has also been the musical director of Fernhurst Choral Society with whom he has conducted a wide range of the choral and oratorio repertoire.

Other concerts in the series which run until November 19, feature Chichester pianist Maria Luc; Frederick Stocken, organist and assistant director of music at St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral, whose ‘Chichester Service’ was commissioned for the Southern Cathedrals Festival held in the city this summer; and a host of other diverse and talented musicians performing on a range of instruments.

Event. Beauty of the Beach.

Felpham beach, near Sea Road, is the venue for the grand finale beach clean and community event on Saturday, August 31, from 11am to 3pm.

Organised by radio station Spirit FM with Arun District Council and Southern Water, everyone is welcome to join the campaign focused on looking after the area's beaches and bathing water. THe event will end with a grand final beach clean. Event. Historic Life Weekend: Textiles. Find out about the production of textiles, with a focus on wool and flax, as well as the later stages of spinning, weaving, braiding and natural dyeing at the Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton. THere is much to inspire modern makers from the skills of the past. Some of the items made by the historic clothing project at the museum over the last 12 years stewarded by members of the group will bbe on display, as well as items worn by the demonstrators around the museum site.

Town set for friendly folk takeover next month ALL the best in folk music will be present in Bognor Regis next month.

THe town’s latest Southdowns Folk Festival promises another four days of toe-tapping fingerstrumming fun from September 19-22.

THe organisers have secured one of the biggest names in the genre, Lindisfarne, as the highlight of their concerts.

THe enduring power of their name – forever linked with Fog on the Tyne and other hits - has seen tickets for their performance at the Regis Centre snapped up.

But there are plenty of other top performers ready to capture the ears of the audiences in the town’s venue.

THe appeal of the festival also lies in the mass of open-air folk, roots, acoustic music and dance on show to spread the word and the skills.

Festival chairman Roger Nash said: “I’m sure

this year’s festival will be better than any of our previous events.

“THis will be our seventh festival and each previous one has surpassed our hopes and expectations.

“THe festival’s place in the British folk scene can be shown by our ability to attract great musicians like Lindisfarne as well as dozens of others to make the event the biggest annual music attraction in Bognor Regis – and everyone is invited.”

A staggering 117 different performances and events make up the 2019 festival. THeir curtain raiser is THe Young ‘Uns, with the Ballard of Johnny Longstaff at 7.30pm on THursday, September 19, at the Regis Centre.

From then on, it’s a case of folk, folk, folk everywhere you go in and around the town centre.

Bognor Regis Pride cancelled? Think again…

PRIDE will go ahead tomorrow after organisers refused to be put back in the closet and have taken an alternative approach to the original plans.

Bognor Regis will make history on Saturday as it hosts its first ever free Pride Party at the Legends Pier.

THis will also be the first time any family

event has been held within the Arun district which aims to help promote, support and celebrate diverse LGBTQ+ community, their families, friends and their allies.

Following a social media outcry at the recent cancellation of Bognor Regis Pride, the main event organiser and LGBT+ ally, Sarah Boote-Coote, remained driven to help provide a free event where individuals may feel accepted to express the person they are without prejudice or persecution.

“Pride, Bognor Regis was formed to fill the gap for our LGBT+ community in Bognor Regis. When it became apparent that we were unable to fulfil our aim for the large Pride event we had hoped for this year, we were exceptionally disappointed and by reading comments on social media, so was our town.

"Because of this outpouring and in the spirit of the Pride moment, we decided the main Pride day, August 31, will not pass by without recognition.

"THe idea of a Pride Party on the Pier was born thanks to sponsors, Bognor Regis Post, and Chichester Post and Coastline, Legends Pier Bar agreed to host the day at their family sports and entertainment."

THis is a free family event where absolutely everyone is welcome without any discrimination of age, sexuality, gender or age.

Pride is about diversity, inclusion and the respect of expression. THere is a very diverse community in a lovely seaside town, and it will be great to finally see everyone party together.

THere are some fantastic acts to enjoy, all

free, plus rainbow face art and hair colouring to really get everyone into the mood of the day.

Organisers have said that visitors should feel free to dress to express and impress.

Pride Party on the pier will be a fantastic event for Bognor Regis held between 2pm and 10pm.

Earlier this year, a £10,000 lottery grant was successfully secured for the two-day event but this was unfortunately returned.

Organisers are delighted to announce that they have been successful in another bid and have received a £5,000 grant from the lottery to build a website and establish a monthly event at different venues around the town. THe aim will be to provide the LGBT+ community group for social events and more.

THe goal during this event will be to try to start raising the money required for Pride 2020 and funds to help start addressing the social isolation issues, allowing the LGBT+ community group to find peer support and generally have fun. Organisers say they hope future events will start in September and every month thereafter leading up to the Pride event next summer.

All of this has been achieved in such a short space of time despite having a few disappointments along the way.

INSPIRATION FOR KIA XCEED REVEALED Kia Motors has revealed the background to the creation of the all-new Kia XCeed urban crossover. Speaking to camera for a new short film, published by Kia, members of the brand’s European design team outline how the new

model came into being for the first time.

THe Kia XCeed is the latest model to join the Ceed line-up, alongside the new five-door hatchback, Sportswagon and ProCeed shooting brake. THe full story of the

Ceed’s three-generation evolution will be revealed in a new limitedrun book, due to be released later this year, including how the allnew Kia XCeed and ProCeed came to life.

President of Design for Kia Motors Europe, oversaw the design of the new Ceed range, a process in which the brand considered a range of options to replace the previous three-door pro_cee’d hatchback.

“While creating the next ProCeed, we realised that there could be a fourth body type within the Ceed line-up. THis became the Kia XCeed,” says Guillaume. “THe beauty of the project was that we never originally set out to create a crossover.”

Stylish, expressive and modern in design, the Kia XCeed represents a sporty alternative to traditional SUVs. More athletic in appearance than its taller rivals, the new model offers something different to the other models in the Ceed range.

THe only body panels carried over from its five-door hatchback sibling are the front doors.

THe Kia XCeed’s cab-rearward silhouette and fastback tailgate angle lend the design a coupélike twist, matched by a relatively long bonnet. While the wheelbase remains the same as other models in the Ceed line-up (2,650 mm), the Kia XCeed’s front and rear overhangs are extended over the five-door hatchback model by 25

mm at the front (to 905 mm) and 60 mm at the rear (to 840 mm). A steeply-angled fastback tailgate, and a rear ‘deck’ trailing edge which sits 60 mm higher than that of the Ceed five-door hatchback, enhances its crossover aesthetic.

THe car’s elevated ride height and body also present the same robust image that attracts buyers to the other SUVs in Kia’s product portfolio. THe Kia XCeed’s ground clearance is 172 mm on 16-inch wheels and 184 mm on 18-inch wheels, a rise of up to 42 mm over the Ceed five-door hatchback.

Wheel arch and side sill cladding and silver roof rails lend the car a tougher, SUV-like presence, with the metallic valance in the rear bumper enhancing this effect.

Boulay adds: “It’s elevated, but it’s not an SUV. It’s a car with a high seating position, but it’s somehow much more coupé-oriented. It’s a solution for those people who don’t want a larger, more imposing SUV, particularly in the town and city.”

Teenagers galore, party nights and hangovers seem to be the norm, as well as sandy white beaches, incredible surfing conditions, cycling everywhere and fresh mussels daily to tantalise the taste buds.

Of course, this is accompanied with a few glasses of French white wine (yes it’s all about the balance!) and meeting new people. It seems to have been the perfect mix to keep everyone happy.

It’s been an activity laden, sundrenched, 12 days and I don’t want it to end. For me, the best part of this holiday has been spending time without any appointments and time restrictions, allowing conversations and laughter to flow endlessly.

It never ceases to amaze me how much we all need to unwind and how many days it takes to actually feel relaxed.

But did you know a change of scenery can offer you so much more than just a vacation?

According to studies, taking just one holiday a year can re set your batteries so much it can reduce your risk of heart attack by 30 per cent.

Meeting new people, indulging in new cultures and putting yourself outside of your comfort zone can put a halt to your everyday stresses.

THe reason being - we all get so bogged

down by everyday tasks and issues that we can’t think outside the box. When we remove ourselves literally from our routines and our realities, we get a totally different perspective on what’s really important in our lives.

THis allows us to reset and recharge in a way that is priceless so when we do go back to work we can handle tasks with a new sense of vigour and enthusiasm.

A change in scenery is like therapy for your soul and mental wellbeing gets a massive boost when you meet new people, and challenge yourselves to new activities and just generally become more active during your day.

Even the anticipation of a vacation can lift the mood, and the actual experiences can create lasting feelings of happiness and new memories that allow us to feel good, happy and satisfied with life.

It can also strengthen relationships when you all experience the same things, and by expanding our horizons it creates more openness and emotional and physical calmness.

Even taking yourself off somewhere different for one day can have this effect on your wellbeing, so if your holidays are over for this summer, make sure you have some nice trips planned over the coming weeks.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or exotic, but just away from your daily routine. A bike ride, a boat trip, a walk in the forest.

Whatever it is, make time to change your world. Even if it’s just for a few hours. Break your patterns and experience something new and see what happens.

NEWS YOUNG pets, and kittens and puppies in particular, are a popular choice with people looking to adopt an animal from a rescue centre.

After all, young animals are likely to have fewer bad habits, they are likely to be trainable, they have many years in front of them so they will be around for longer and there is the undeniable cuteness factor.

Sadly, this means that older pets are often overlooked and spend more time waiting for their forever home. But perhaps bringing an older dog or cat home is not such a bad idea after all?

Anna and her husband decided to give it a go, and this is their story.

"A few months ago, we saw Max, a 10-year-old Border Collie, looking for a new home at the RSPCA Mount Noddy Animal Centre.

"Max was signed over by his previous owners because they were not able to look after him properly, and he was skinny, with itchy skin and frankly, a bit smelly!

"You could tell he was an older boy from his cloudy eyes, the stiffness of his joints when he moved and his yellow, stained teeth. But he was also a loving chap who just wanted a cuddle, so after introducing him to our little terrier we brought him home. Turns out it was a great decision, and here is why…

"Even though Max has brought with him some behavioural ‘baggage’, he also brought with him a ton of great habits.

"He is much calmer and settles more easily than a young collie would, which makes him an ideal pub dog!

"He is fully house trained and not bothered by other dogs.

He travels well and has slept through the night from day one.

He walks on the lead really well and his recall is great.

"He can be left on his own without any problems, and he is happy to be groomed, handled and examined. So even though we were prepared to put in work to settle and train Max, it turned out we didn’t have to do any of it!

"But adopting this older boy was not only a good decision because he turned out to be such an easy pet. THe most rewarding part of it all is the feeling that we are giving a dog, who perhaps had not been so lucky until now, a good, loving home where he will always have food, shelter and cuddles on demand.

"Being able to watch Max’s little face go from startled and unsure to happy and relaxed, his fur from dull and stained to clean and shiny, being able to give him an opportunity to experience long walks, naps on the sofa, learning new tricks and getting lots and lots of cuddles is perhaps the best part of adopting an older dog.

"He might not be with us as long as a puppy would but he fills our days with so much love, and I hope we do the same for him."

THE CITY'S canal has turned the clock back 20 years with a piece of nostalgia.

THe popular television series Rosie and Jim, by John Cunliffe, was enjoyed by millions of children.

THe Chichester Canal Trust now has its very own Rosie and Jim, lovingly knitted and gifted by Janet Tomsett.

Rosie and Jim were two rag dolls who lived aboard a narrowboat called the Ragdoll, which is from Birmingham.

THey sat with a concertina on their lap, and came alive when no one was looking to explore the world that they pass by on the canal.

Usually, they ended up causing trouble, but they were never detected because noone ever saw them.

Janet, aged 84, from Denmead, near Waterlooville, knitted two rag dolls for her grandchildren, Sam and

ALMOST £20,000 was raised earlier this month by visitors to a fayre in Sidlesham.

On August 11, THe Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre held their annual summer event.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "It was a great event, with stalls, music, games, food, raffle and a chance to see the animals.

"THe final total made was a record best ever for the centre, it was an amazing £19,286.62 as well as lots of food donations for the animals.

"THe centre would like to thank everyone who came to visit them, all the volunteers who helped and anyone who

On August 18, Sam and Demi brought Janet to the canal for a birthday trip with Rosie and Jim. Janet said: "I’m delighted to revisit the canal with these gifts, which I stumbled across while having a bit of tidy-up.

Sam added: "We really enjoyed our trip and will definitely return for another ride. And of course, to say hi to Rosie and Jim!" A CARE manager is celebrating 30 years in a career she says she finds deeply fulfilling and rewarding.

Ellie Chapman is the registered manager at Caremark Chichester, which offers personalised home care to older, less able or otherwise vulnerable people living in the region.

Since being appointed manager in January, 2018, Ellie has doubled the number of weekly care hours the business delivers and recruited new care and support workers to support its clients.

Ellie’s career in the care sector started at the age of 14, when she preferred to serve breakfast to residents of a care home in Worthing rather than get a paper round!

“I loved it straight away, just being able to put a smile on somebody’s face made me feel incredible,” she explains. “I was able to decide there and then what I wanted to do in life, so I count myself as being very lucky!”

Ellie, who lives in Rustington, left school and worked full time at the care home, then joined a specialist dementia care home before moving to a large group with around 150 care homes across West Sussex.

“At first, I was a front-line care and support worker, supporting those with challenging behaviours, autism and disabilities,” Ellie said. “However, I rose through the ranks quickly and was eventually promoted to ‘inclusion lead’.”

Ellie worked closely with care home staff and customers, as well as the Care Quality Commission and local authorities, to ensure everyone was encouraged and able to access the group’s services and activities.

Ellie, who now has a wealth of care-related qualifications, worked for the care home group for 14 years before joining Caremark. Now she is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business.

THE WOMEN'S centre, My Sister’s House in Bognor Regis, has just celebrated its fifth anniversary.

THe CIC, set up by Julie Budge, helps women with domestic abuse, addiction, poverty, illness, and relationship breakdown.

THey offer a bespoke range of practical, emotional and therapeutic support and advice to women aimed at helping them get their lives to a better place.

Chichester MP Gillian Keegan visited the charity just ahead of its anniversary where she viewed the facilities and heard about the work done to support women across Chichester and the Arun area.

Mrs Keegan has been a strong voice on the issue of domestic abuse and has highlighted its prevalence in society during a Prime Minister's questions session to former PM THeresa May. THe MP is also on the bill committee for the Government's landmark domestic abuse bill that clearly defines domestic abuse, including non-physical abuse and financial manipulation.

It introduces new protection orders so police and courts have measures to intervene quickly, and it puts stronger systems in place for court hearings to keep victims and perpetrators apart. THe legislation will also bring in a new domestic abuse commissioner who can speak up for those affected, raise public awareness and encourage preventative work.

Last month, Mrs Keegan also supported a report by Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk. THe report looked further at domestic abuse and suggested changes that need to be undertaken to ensure support is comprehensive across the country.

Domestic abuse affects one in four women in the UK and is an issue the MP has been campaigning about. Mrs Keegan described My Sister’s House Women's Centre as a lifeline and is working with them to see if there are any opportunities to expand their services with a hub either in Chichester city centre or to the north of the district.

Chichester’s great drainage debate

By Amy Roberts, collections officer, The Novium Museum THE health of Chichester lagged somewhat behind the rest of the country in the 19th century, with various waterborne diseases such as typhoid and cholera making regular attacks on residents of the city.

THERE was huge debate between two opposing groups of local residents dubbed the ‘drainers’ and the ‘non or anti drainers’, as is attested by a wonderful poem from our collections.

THe first recorded cholera outbreak in Chichester was in 1831-2, and there were several more over the next decades.

Edwin Chadwick was an English social reformer who set out to educate both public and politicians on the urgent need to improve sanitation, including providing pure water and adequate sewage disposal.

A report by Chadwick led to the Public Health Act being passed in 1848, making it the responsibility of the local council to provide drainage, clean water, cleansing, sewerage and environmental health regulation.

It required all towns with a death rate of over 23 per 1,000 to set up boards of health.

However, these boards were often allowed to lapse after the worst cholera outbreaks were over. THe main limitation of the Act was that although it provided a framework that could be utilised by local authorities it did not compel action.

In Chichester, for a considerable time the corporation did nothing in response to improving the situation, instead putting the onus on the landowners to do as they saw fit.

In 1855, the Sanitary Nuisances Act was passed and in response the city council of Chichester distributed notices to all citizens.

THis notice stated that the council now had more powers to help make the city a healthier place to live, reducing the possibility of recurrence of ‘fevers and virulent diseases’.

With this appeal, however the city council once again expected residents to take steps to make improvements and most significantly to bear the costs of doing so. THis again was a major contributing factor to the lack of action and the subsequent ongoing debate and polarisation of the city.

THe river Lavant was thought to be a major contributing factor, as it was a key receptacle of the ‘privy soil’ from surrounding houses.

In 1831, Richard Dally commented in his ‘Chichester Guide’, ‘though shallow and small it is not without its uses in carrying off the filth and ordur of some parts of the suburbs’.

To try to rectify the problem, all but two dwellings were connected to cesspools rather than being directly fed into the Lavant. In 1865, however, it was still being reported as the main sewer.

An article in the Daily Telegraph reported its astonishment that Chichester retained such an outdated custom describing how ‘cattle rush into shops and one animal got wedged behind a shop counter and could not be released until the counter was taken to pieces’.

In 1866, Charles Swainson, Canon of Chichester, wrote of the market: “two streets that lead to the Cross are absolutely impassable…THe cattle and sheep and pigs stand in their own filth for so many hours that…they leave their marks behind on the pavement…And thus it is a fact that the betterdressed people avoid Chichester…”

THat same year the notice in the accompanying image was issued to citizens of Chichester by W. Norman, former owner of the Tannery. A few years later the market was finally moved to a site outside the Eastgate.

A letter from secretary Waypole to the town clerk in 1866 highlighted the level of sickness in the local area. Complaints from 30 prominent citizens highlighted that only two public pumps were available to the 8,000 inhabitants of the city and that the wells within the city were drawing supplies from a gravel bed. THis same gravel bed was being contaminated by the city’s numerous cesspools.

Debates about sanitation continued but in 1874 the city was finally provided with a water supply. It was another couple of decades before a mains sewerage system was finally installed.

At a meeting at the Unicorn Inn in 1889, the anti-drainers claimed that a ‘bucket of urine thrown on the ground would spread itself over the ground, be dried up by the sun and in a short time there would be nothing to see or smell’.

Today, it seems curious that anyone would be opposed to proper drainage and sanitation.

However, at the time it caused much friction within the city, with many non-drainers simply stating the cost was prohibitive and funds were not available at that time.

THe city’s ‘drainers’ produced startling statistics comparing incidences of typhoid in Chichester with other areas of the district.

Over a period of eight years all of the 20 districts compared had a lower rate of typhoid than that experienced in Chichester.

Chichester was found to be among the very worst towns for cases of typhoid and consumption across the entire country in the period 1871 to 1880.

By 1896, half of the city’s houses had finally been connected to mains drainage.

Athletics CHICHESTER Runner James Baker has broken yet another record - this time clocking up his 200th win in a road race.

THe multi-terrain athlete won all five races of the Gosport 5k series this summer to reach the milestone.

Baker was made to work for it in the final of those events, losing the lead before the 4k mark before sprinting through to take the finishing tape in 16 minutes 4 seconds.

Since then, he has also broken the course record of the Alice Holt Forest park run in Hampshire, knocking seven seconds off the mark he set two years ago to finish in 16:17.

metre championships, finishing in 33 minutes 36.

Elsewhere, a squad of 16 Chichester Athletics members went to Swindon on Saturday, August 17, for the fifth and final match of the Southern Athletics League.

Stallard leads TZ home at Arundel AN incredibly warm weekend did not halt the Bognor Tone Zone crew from hitting their stride as dozens raced in events around the world.

By far the biggest turn out for those in blue and orange vests was the hilly Arundel 10k.

Despite temperatures nearing 30C, members managed to nail some sizzling times.

THe club had the biggest turnout at the event again, with 32 different runners competing.

Juliet Stallard claimed first lady in an impressive time of 43 minutes 41 seconds, just ahead of good friend Jess THomson who was second in a time of 44:02.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill timed his to perfection with a 45 minute flat. Allen Porter somehow managed a personal best on the tough course with a time of 47:13, with Carolyn Stapley hot on his heels in 47:53 and third in her category.

Ian Bayley, Josey Faggetter, Gary Pidgeon, Donna Strowger, Natalie Tribe, Peter Ramsdale and Andy Miles all ran solid races to finish under 55 minutes.

Marzena Sowinska, Kirstee Porter and Lucy Trait all finished close together in times of 55

minutes.

Coach Stuart THomson does what he does best and ran with a fellow club member helping them all the way.

THomson and Karen Vilday finished in 1 hour 2 minutes, just ahead of Zoe Hemes, Paul Wells and Lesley Ward who finished 1st in her category.

Elle Matthews, Sam Lee and Chris Seaton crossed in 1 hour 7 minutes while friends Charlotte Seaton and Debi Haddleton finishing together in 1 hour 9 minutes.

All in all, it was an excellent showing from all associated with the club, with a number of personal targets being beaten.

On the outskirts of Worcester, Michelle Lloyd and Lea Hodgkins were at the Pershore Plum 10k, where unlike other races you receive a plum as well as a medal for finishing.

Lloyd finished in 1 hour 1 minute with Hodgkins not far behind in 1 hour 8 minutes.

Away from a blisteringly warm Blighty, over in the United States was the Lighthouse 5k, where Sarah Zacal flew the flag and stormed through to break the tape as first lady.

Zacal was over the moon to finish 1st and in a time of 22.14!

Bognor are one win from Premier return

Middleton aim for the top half MIDDLETON CC will want to end their season on a high - with Sean Heather's side still in with a sniff of landing a top three finish.

After a fine first three months of the season, the Sea Lane club have stalled in recent weeks.

A 116-run defeat to champions elect Roffey last weekend makes it three games in a row without a win for Middleton.

THat run of form at the crucial part of the campaign has seen Heather's side slip from third down to sixth in the ten team Sussex Premier Division.

THe club end their season tomorrow with a trip to already relegated Mayfield (11.30am).

With only 13 points separating Middleton from THree Bridges in third, Heather's side know that a 30 point victory could propel them back up to the spots they have occupied for much of the campaign.

Heather knows his side will need to start the match on the front foot, something they struggled to do against a very strong Roffey side at Sea Lane last weekend.

After winning the toss, the visitors very quickly set about the home side's attack with openers THeo Rivers (39) and Ben Manenti (69) putting on 109 for the first wicket.

Roffey's middle order continued to keep up the pressure on Middleton's attack, despite Heather chopping and changing his bowlers frequently.

Rohit Jagota (47), Mike Norris (46) and Matt Davies (32) all contributed, propelling the visitors beyond the 250 mark.

But the home side rallied with Russell Talman (3-40) and Matthew Reynolds (4-44) reducing Roffey from 257-4 to a final score of 288-9 off their 50 overs.

In reply, Middleton failed to really get going. Heather (29) and Mahesh Rawat (41) did their bit with the bat to try to keep the home side up with the run rate.

But once the Indian overseas player went with the score at 1527 there was only ever going to be one winner.

Middleton were eventually dismissed for 172 off 38.3 overs.

BOGNOR Regis CC are just one victory away from securing promotion back to the top tier of Sussex County League cricket.

With just one game of the season to go, Ryan Maskell's side sit second in Division Two, just two points clear of Haywards Heath in third.

Standing in the way of Bognor's return to the top tier is fourth-place St James's Montefiore, who themselves still hold a long shot of sneaking into one of two promotion spots.

Having pieced together an excellent run of form in the second half of the season, Bognor will be favourites for the game at Ditchling - but they will know the home side will be up for the fight for the match tomorrow (12.30pm), with St James's losing just once in the their last five.

Bognor ensured their promotion fate rests in their own hands when they comfortably defeated Chichester Priory Park by nine wickets at the Regis Oval last time out.

After putting the visitors into bat, Bognor wasted no time in making inroads into the Chi line up.

Only Matthew Bennison (48) showed any resistance as a good team effort saw Priory bowled out for 127 within 45 overs.

Left armer Joe Ashmore (3-15) and Zimbabwean spinner Roy Kaia (2-14) took the plaudits in what was an excellent team bowling effort.

In reply, Kaia took his fine form with the ball into his batting, smashing an unbeaten 76 from just 74 balls to fire Bognor to victory.

He was supported by Maskell (22) and Mikey Harris (25*) as they reached the total in less than 23 of the 45 overs.

Chichester Priory Park will look to bounce back from that derby defeat as they welcome Haywards Heath to Goodwood (12.30pm).

In Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to end their season on a winning note after a disappointing August put pay to their promotion hopes.

Heading into the final month of the season, the Nyetimber Lane side were in contention to land the league crown.

But a run of four games without a win sees them in fourth with a home match against third-place Worthing (12.30pm) to come tomorrow.

Stuart Hanks' side lost by 58 runs to relegation-threatened Findon last time out after failing to chase down a target of 228.

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce is hoping the shock of a derby day mauling at local rivals Worthing will spark a reaction from his young side.

Rather than basking in the Bank Holiday sunshine, Bognor well and truly melted, putting in a below-par showing which resulted in a 3-0 loss to their near neighbours Defeat in the first El Classicoast of the season was hard to take for the large travelling cohort of Rocks fans.

But Pearce believes the supporters will see a reaction when the side returns to action at the Nye Camp tomorrow at home to Carshalton Athletic (3pm).

Speaking after the defeat, Pearce said: "It's been a bad day in the office but it's not the end of the season. It's three points, that's all it is. It's a local derby and I understand that means more but it's life. I'm more unhappy with certain senior players today and that is not acceptable to me, Robbie or the club.

"Most probably I hope we get the reaction out of our players that Worthing got last week [after losing 6-0 to Hornchurch]."

Rocks were on reflection probably the better side in the first half at Woodside Road.

But they were unable to take their chances and went in at the

break one down after an error by keeper Charlie Searle.

In the second half, former Rock Ollie Pearce scored twice to extend the lead and send most of the 1,700 in the ground home with a smile on their face.

THe defeat means Bognor are 17th with four points from their first four matches.

Tomorrow's visitors, meanwhile, are fifth, taking nine points from their opening five games. While the south London side are fancied to do well in their Isthmian Premier this season, Pearce believes his side will give them a good game He said: "THere's no one that's outstanding in this league. Teams are all much of a muchness and if you score first it gives you a great lift.

"THat first goal [against Worthing] was devastating, but we got through in the first half on four occasions when I am expecting the ball to be in the back of the net and not one of those occasions did we convert.

"If you have problems in both areas like we did [against Worthing] then we will not win many games."

Rocks have been drawn against Isthmian South East side Sittingbourne in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup next Saturday (Sept 7, 3pm).

'Learn from mistakes - or else' IT'S not often that Rocks boss Jack Pearce singles out individuals for not meeting his high demands.

But after the 3-0 derby day loss to Worthing last week there was no stopping the veteran manager from pointing his finger in the direction of players he felt had let the side and the club down.

Over the years, when he's been nurturing a young side who have had just a few weeks of playing together, Pearce tends to resort to the carrot rather than the stick.

But the manner of the defeat, and two high-profile mistakes which led to goals, led to the manager laying down the challenge to his players: learn from your mistakes - or else.

Speaking to Rocks Radio after the defeat, Pearce said: "I think whenever you lose 3-0 the easiest thing to say is that you're not up for the fight, but I don't think that's the case.

"Goals change the psychology and everything else in a game. As I keep trying to say to people what we're trying to do here is not easy.

"We have got five players - that's 50 per cent of the team - who were playing at levels below this last season. THey will come in and mistakes. But seven players didn't play anywhere near the level we expect. When it's like that we're not going to win many games of football."

In an explosive interview, Pearce then went on to single out individuals.

He said: "I must be honest the way Keaton Wood played in the first half I thought we found him at a bus stop on the way in. But he was not the worst player we had."

He then pointed to the error from goalkeeper Charlie Searle in spilling the ball for the opener and Tommy Leigh for losing the ball on the edge of his box as he tried to

beat two players, which led to the Rebels' second.

Pearce said: "THe only good thing to come out of this game is if Tommy Leigh understands risk and reward."

He added that Leigh's decision was "disgraceful" - adding "he is young and he will learn".

WELL, where do I start with what happened on Monday?

It was very difficult match to watch, never mind commentate on as there was very little to shout about for our fans making the journey to Woodside Road.

It was the complete opposite to the Wingate game where we dominated the match.

I think the first half could have gone either way as we did have a few chances.

In the second half I thought we would push on but it was a very disappointing and lacklustre performance that I have not seen in a long time.

I live in Littlehampton so made my way up to the game early and arrived at about 1pm. After enjoying the pregame entertainment and watching the players warm up, at about 2.30pm I made the way up into the stand ready for commentary on Rocks Radio.

I hoped that we could get a point from the match as it doesn't matter where you are, whenever you play away that is a good result.

Some of the fans were singling out individuals but the whole team just didn't seem to gel and even some of our most experienced players just didn't perform.

Maybe we should have brought on subs earlier than we did as at times you just have to step it up but as soon as the second went in the game was gone.

THe heat had an impact too and I know the players had training on Saturday at Nyewood Lane so whether the team were tired I just don't know.

I didn't think Worthing were really outstanding, it was just typical that the one player who made the difference, Ollie Pearce - who got two goals was a former Rock.

Up until their first goal we more than held our own but we

just didn't take our chances. If we did we would be up at the top of the table!

I really wasn't surprised at Robbie and Jack's reaction after the match.

While I'm not always keen on singling out players as you don't know how they will react, I know that Jack has done it before and it has worked.

I think the players have to take the blame as a whole.

Nothing went right at all and while Jimmy Muitt stood out he looked as though he was trying to do too much.

I just don't know where that leaves us this season as one week we're brilliant and the next we're just not at it.

We have to wait a few months now to wait and get our revenge on them for the reverse match.

I think a bit more time with the same team and let's see where we are. But I do think we will finish stronger and higher up than last season.

Next up is Carshalton who are a decent outfit who had a stonking end to the season.

THey are very well organised and can score goals so we need to be on our game for that.

Everyone saying that if we play like we did against Worthing will be under pressure.

THere's no way will we underestimate them so it will be interesting how we get on.

Hopefully, the home advantage and the support of the Nye Camp crowd will help us get some points.
