Selsey opens new playground for all

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SELSEY Town Council officially opened the newest piece of equipment at the East Beach play area on Monday evening.

The playground includes an inclusive, one-off, play and slide unit featuring interactive games and a double-width slide.

Claire Panton, a Selsey resident, had used the opportunity of submitting an idea to the council’s community fund in 2015 to request accessible equipment to enable children of all abilities to play

together.

Recognising the value of this suggestion, the town council had pledged £15,000 from the fund and secured partnership support from Chichester District Council via a further £15,000 from the New Homes Bonus Awards.

In the early evening sunshine, Claire and her son, Finlay, cut the blue ribbon alongside Selsey Town Council chairman Andrew Brown and district councillors Mike Beal, Carol Purnell and Donna Johnson.

Claire stated: "I’m really pleased to see this equipment finally in place. We do need more of it but it’s a great start!”

The bespoke unit has been designed to provide a 'sensory rich', safe, fun place where children of all abilities can interact and play together.

Designed specifically to reference the local RNLI lifeboat station and muchmissed old boathouse, the unit is unique to Selsey.

In addition, the pathway network has been significantly extended to provide a fully accessible inclusive play experience through linking the new equipment to the existing nest swing.

Cllr Brown said the unit was already a success, with children of all ages and abilities using it together.

Cllr Plant continued: "Our industry and commercial emissions are also higher than other districts as a reflection of the industries in our area compared to other districts including the amount of agriculture.

"The rural nature of our district also means that there is a higher reliance on oil by both industry and domestic properties.

"We have seen a five per cent reduction in total emissions per capita from 2016 to 2017 but we do recognise that there is still more to be done."

Cabinet members went on to discuss the climate emergency declaration after a draft budget resolution was amended and approved by full council in March this year to task the cabinet with using up to £150,000 from reserves to fund a three-year climate emergency officer.

Cabinet members agreed to task he environmental panel with producing priority actions on how to move to a carbon-neutral environment.

Cllr Susan Taylor said: "I fully approve of this declaration but what is so important is that it's not going to be just words.

"Words are easy. We will be taking positive action and I think that has to be commended."

After the meeting, Cllr Sarah Sharp from the Green Party told the Chichester Post: "At the last cabinet meeting at Chichester District Council there were no members of the public present. What a different audience we had today with many rows of supporters taking time to come and support the cabinet in their discussions.

"The public mood is with the district council as we take on the huge tasks ahead of us and declare a climate emergency.

"It was agreed that the environment panel would be meeting monthly as this agenda is so important and there is so much to get done.

"It is much more than just asking people not to use plastic straws, it is about setting short, medium and long-term carbon reduction targets in the areas of food, housing, transport, waste, energy and investments.

"I am glad that the co-working with other councils was strengthened.

We need to embed caring for the wellbeing of the people who live here and the environment into all our workings. Our carbon-neutral target has to be central to all decisions made by Chichester District Council.

"I am looking forward to working on updating our climate action plan and all the other areas the Environment Panel is responsible for to reduce air pollution and waste. Work in these areas has the potential of making people's lives better, healthier and safer - it is time for bold action."

Breakthrough in unsolved murder

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A MAN has been arrested in Romania over the murder of Valerie Graves in Bosham, over five years ago.

On December 30, 2013, the 55-yearold mother and grandmother was found brutally murdered in her bedroom in Smugglers Lane, Bosham. She had been staying at the property while the owners were away over the Christmas period.

Romanian national Cristian Sabou, 28, was arrested on Wednesday morning under a European arrest warrant (EAW) at his address in Dej by officers from the Romanian national police, who served on him the EAW which had been authorised by a district judge in the UK. Detectives from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team have been working

closely with the authorities in Romania.

Sabou’s extradition is now being sought through the Romanian courts and he will now appear in court in Cluj-Napoca to face extradition proceedings. The time and date have yet to be confirmed.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Fanner said: "This is a major development in the case. It follows detailed enquiries in Romania by officers from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team, in which we were assisted by valuable liaison with local law enforcement officers of the General Police Inspectorate, Criminal Investigations Directorate, Bucharest, the Criminal Investigation Service in Cluj, and the Special Operations Brigade in Cluj, also the local prosecutor.

“We have worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout and they have authorised the prosecution.

We have also had valuable support from the National Crime Agency’s overseas network.

“Valerie’s family have been kept informed of developments but they are not making any public statement at this time.

“We now hope to ensure, subject to the decision of the Romanian courts and judicial authorities, Sabou’s return to this country for an appearance before magistrates with a view to his being sent for crown court trial.

“This is a major development in our task of achieving justice for Valerie and her family, but now the case is before the courts, proceedings are active, and we are not in a position to disclose any further information at this time."

A renewed appeal for help was issued by the police last year on the fifth anniversary of the grandmother's brutal murder.

Valerie arrived to house sit at a property in Smugglers Lane, with her mother,

Valerie’s sister, Jan, and her sister’s partner, Nigel Akers, arrived shortly afterwards. The mansion belonged to the Chamberlains, friends of Nigel’s, who were holidaying in Costa Rica with their children.

As the festive period drew to a close, the family were preparing to return to their own homes but remained at the house on the evening of December 29. Valerie was staying in a ground-floor bedroom at the back of the premises.

The following morning, on December 30, Valerie was found dead in her bedroom by her sister. She had suffered severe head and facial injuries.

A patio door, leading directly from

the bedroom outside to the back of the premises, was found to be unlocked.

The killing of Valerie in December, 2013, remains one of the biggest murder investigations carried out by Sussex Police in recent years.

Police guarded the house as forensics officers began the painstaking challenge of collecting vital evidence. In the days after her murder, officers spent a significant time in the area, speaking to those living and working there, to gather information and witnesses.

Just days after the murder, a hammer was found by police search teams in Hoe Lane, at the entrance to the driveway of Hart’s Farm, approximately 600 metres away from the murder scene. It was confirmed as the weapon used to kill Valerie.

On January 14, 2014, a 22-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Valerie. He was questioned and released on bail but eventually released without further action.

In November, 2014, detectives believed they had a breakthrough in the case.

Forensic scientists had obtained a limited DNA profile for the suspect, which meant they could start requesting voluntary DNA samples to eliminate men from the investigation who lived and worked in the Bosham area, either permanently or as migrant workers.

Two months later, in January, 2015, Sussex Police started the biggest voluntary mass DNA screening in its history of all men aged over 17 who lived or worked in Bosham. Despite collecting 2,819 DNA samples, no match was found.

It was expected in January that 902 jobs would go nationally with the closure of 27 Patisserie Valerie stores, 19 Druckers and 25 Patisserie Valerie concessions.

Patisserie Valerie went into administration after failing to reach a rescue deal with its banks.

Entrepreneur Luke Johnson, who bought the business in 2006, has committed more money to ensure staff are paid their wages this month.

The first signs of trouble came in October last year after accounting “irregularities” were revealed. That included “secret overdrafts” unknown to Mr Johnson and the board.

Shares in Patisserie Holdings were suspended and finance director Chris Marsh was arrested and later released on bail without charge.

More plans to give businesses a boost SMALL enterprises across the district will be able to boost their business thanks to another grants scheme, which was launched by Chichester District Council last week.

Following the success of the district’s previous Enabling Grants Scheme last year, more than £140,000 will now be available for small businesses in the Chichester district. This has been made possible through a partnership between district and borough councils in West Sussex.

The Enabling Grants Scheme, which will run for up to two years, offers a simple way for small businesses to access match funding of up to £2,500 for website and capital projects. Examples of eligible projects could include improvements and upgrades to a website, purchase of equipment or training packages and improvements to a premises and its fixtures and fittings.

Grants of £1,000 are also available to

help businesses employ an apprentice or up-skill existing staff through the apprenticeship training programme.

One of the businesses that has previously benefited from the Enabling Grants scheme includes Stickers4Walls — a rapidly growing local business that sells high quality wall stickers, which are all made, designed and hand-finished in their Chichester workshop. With grant funding, they were able to purchase a new piece of machinery that has directly and significantly increased their turnover.

“The enabling grant has made such a positive difference to my business, as it brought forward my decision to invest in the specialist printer by several months,” said Karen Griffin, of Stickers4Walls.

“Year on year sales are up by almost 370 per cent since the printer – which the team has affectionately named ‘The Beast’ – has been fully operational. This has led to two new jobs being created,

doubling the size of the team to four, with further expansion on the horizon.”

Cllr Tony Dignum, cabinet member for finance, growth, place, and regeneration, said: “Supporting our businesses and improving the local economy are key priorities for us as a council, and the Enabling Grants Scheme is a fantastic way for us to help promote commercial activity and business growth across the district.

“The last scheme was extremely popular, offering a welcome funding boost to almost 50 small businesses.

We hope this year’s scheme will be just as popular and that the funding on offer will give many more businesses the confidence to try something new that will positively impact both their organisation and the district.”

Cathedral roof restoration project sees double success

CHICHESTER Cathedral is celebrating after receiving double recognition at the 21st annual Sussex Heritage Awards run by the Sussex Heritage Trust.

At the awards ceremony held last week, traditional lead worker John Hill, along with his sons, Lewis and Dale, were winners in the prestigious Building Crafts Award section for the re-covering of the Quire roof at the cathedral, the first phase in the overall sequence of work.

They are replacing the failing copper roof, installed after World War Two, with traditional thick sandcast lead, examples of which have lasted over 100 years. It requires great skill and experience to lay – and for this project, at great height.

In addition, the cathedral received highly commended status in the ecclesiastical award category for the Quire roof restoration.

This recognition additionally celebrates the vital work of carpenters John Maddison and Constantin Nistok, who are working to repair any damaged timbers that support the new lead roof covering.

Commenting on both awards, the judges stated: "The project involved the repair of roof timbers and replacement of defective sheet copper roof which was laid post-World War Two as a cost saving, with cast sheet lead weathering as was originally laid. The quality of the craftsmanship in laying the sheet lead was outstanding and deserves the craftsman's award."

The Dean of Chichester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Stephen Waine, said: “All at the cathedral are delighted that John, Dale and Lewis have received such recognition from the Sussex Heritage Trust.

"Both awards deservedly celebrate the skills and dedication of the individual craftsmen involved in this project, and also the hard work of every member of the restoration team – contractors, staff and volunteers.

"We also thank all those individuals and organisations who have donated towards the project, who have made it possible to protect this sacred and

historic place for generations to come.”

Businessman jailed for defrauding his stepson A FORMER president of Chichester Chamber of Commerce has been jailed for defrauding his stepson out of an inheritance of £59,000 from his father.

Iain Cochrane Shepherd, who was made MBE is 2015 for his services to the marine industry and the economy of Chichester, was told by Judge William Ashworth on Tuesday that he had shown a clear abuse of trust and the offence was "calculated with an aspect of greed".

He was in Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing, having pleaded guilty to fraud and after twice failing to attend hearings.

The court was told the fraud arose as a result of the death of Stephen Powell in January, 2004, when his son, Joshua, was eight. He died intestate but entrusted his friend and former Royal Navy colleague, Shepherd, to look after the boy's interests.

When the Powells' family home was sold for £83,255 in December, 2006, it was paid into a bank account in Shepherd's name.

A year later, Shepherd married Mary Powell, becoming stepfather to Joshua, for whom he was a legal trustee. Just over £25,000 was withdrawn from the bank account to pay for outstanding debts from the estate, leaving £58,895.

The prosecution said that between December 8, 2006, and February 10, 2010, Shepherd took money out of the account, which he controlled, mostly as cash withdrawals of £300 and £200.

There was £1.64 remaining.

It was also revealed Shepherd was an undischarged bankrupt, which would have meant he was ineligible to become a trustee for Joshua, who lives in Chichester with his mother.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Joshua, who is studying for a degree in paleontology, said he had been affected emotionally and financially by Shepherd's

actions. He had planned to use the money to pay off his student loan and, as he suffers with ADHD and expected to have difficulty finding a job at the end of his course, was relying on it.

He stated: "Shepherd is fully aware of my disabilites and has no compassion for me or my mother who has fought for me all her life. My deceased father thought Shepherd was a friend as they had both been naval officers.

"He is a despicable human being, only interested in his standing in society."

Shepherd, who represented himself in court, said he apologised unreservedly to everyone affected and was truly sorry.

"I have been fairly dreadful and drinking too much for too many years," he said.

He said he received a war disability pension as a result of service in the Falklands War and suffered from some medical issues but aimed to repay the money and was intending to sell stock from his business. He believed he had made a significant contribution to society and had worked on a voluntary basis for a number of organisations.

Shepherd, who is 65, said he was unaware he was still bankrupt and thought the order made in 1996 had expired after a year. He had received no communications about it until 2017.

In sentencing Shepherd, of Aldwick Road, Aldwick, Bognor Regis, Judge Ashworth said that, despite being challenged, he had prevaricated and repeatedly lied. Failing to attend hearings had caused substantial delay and the victim was particularly vulnerable.

For the fraud, he was jailed for three years and six months with two further sentences of two months each, concurrently, for failing to appear in court, making a total of three years and eight months with up to half in custody.

A compensation order of £19,497 would be made to the Official Receiver as this sum was available subsequent to the bankruptcy.

Offences included domestic violence assault, theft from a motor vehicle, assaulting a police officer, drunk and disorderly behaviour, affray, harassment, grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving.

Numerous other reports were made to police, which included: In Main Road, Nutbourne, between June 21 and 22, an Audi A4 S Line vehicle was stolen while parked in a layby. Serial 1003 24/6.

In Kingsham Avenue, Chichester, on Wednesday, June 26, police received a report of a shed breakin where bikes were stolen. Serial 0894 26/6.

On Friday, June 28, police received a report of a vehicle being stolen between June 24 and 25 in Velyn Avenue, Chichester. The vehicle was a Citroen Berlingo.

In Commonside, Emsworth, a studio outbuilding was broken into, sometime between June 28 and June 30. Some rare limited edition Lego was stolen from the property. Serial 0445 30/6.

In Birdham Road, Chichester, on Friday, June 28, police received a report of a break-in at a brick shed outbuilding between Monday, June 24, and Thursday, June 27. Garden machinery was stolen. Serial 0375 28/6.

A vehicle was stolen from Old Farm Road, Selsey, between June 21 and 24. The vehicle was a Blue Transit Sports Van. Serial 0829 24/6.

Club celebrates 100 years in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MEMBERS of a popular club in the city have celebrated the group's 100th birthday.

On December 2, 1919, a group of Chichester business and professional men met at the Dolphin Hotel in West Street to discuss the idea of forming a Rotary club.

They were joined by two Rotarians from the then recently-formed Portsmouth and Southsea Club and a representative of the British Association of Rotary Clubs.

A further meeting was held a week later when it was agreed that the Rotary Club of Chichester should be established and a committee was formed under the presidency of Dr Arthur Bostock, a wellknown local surgeon and, later, mayor of Chichester.

Sponsored by the Portsmouth club, Chichester Rotary Club was formally chartered on May 1, 1920.

Gina's love of the Downs inspires her new book and city festival slot A LONDONER who moved to the county 40 years ago has become a newly published author and performed at the Festival of Chichester.

The South Downs stole Gina Challen’s heart when she moved to West Sussex in 1979 and 40 years on, the chalk landscape has inspired her and she has now written a debut collection of short stories.

Gina completed a Masters in creative writing at the University of Chichester in 2014. Her stories have appeared in numerous anthologies. Two were shortlisted for the Bridport Prize in 2014 and another was longlisted for the 2018 VS Pritchett Prize.

She said: "I write short stories, they grip me. They are difficult and tricky but I love them.

"After a couple of years, I realised that I had recurring themes in my work, that the landscape of the Downs, the people and their way of life, the nature all found their way into my writing and wove themselves through the stories.

"These are my inspiration, mainly I think because I feel I belong here. And then I saw I had a group of stories for a book!

"I've always been an avid reader, right from a child, and I've always wanted to write, but I thought I would write a novel. Life happened and I never concentrated on writing but I

did keep reading. A couple of times I thought about a BA but each time 'stuff' got in the way.

"Then, at 52, I started a BA in English and creative writing on the understanding I could drop the creative writing after the first year if necessary. I didn't and three years later I started the Masters.

"Leaving my job was scary. A massive step that took a lot of soul searching and worry, but I have been fortunate in that every couple of years I go back to them for a few months to help out which in turn helps me pay the bills.

"I enjoyed being part of the Festival of Chichester and when I put in my application I didn't expect to be included. When I was offered a slot, I began to worry if people would come. What if there was only me and a room full of empty chairs! I really enjoyed the evening, people came, we laughed, ate chocolate, I read and they asked questions. No one walked out, so I consider that it went well!

"I'm working on another collection of short stories and also a novel.

When I was looking for a publisher, I had a lot of very positive rejections, mainly asking if I had a novel they could see. I didn't. But I have part of one now! I still write short stories, I like the challenge they bring."

At a reception to mark the launch of the booklet and the year-long celebrations, the club welcomed local dignitaries and representatives of Chichester’s mother and daughter Rotary clubs to a reception on Tuesday evening.

David said: "The club has helped local disadvantaged children and frail and lonely old folk, has funded eye camps and limb camps in India, has supported school projects in Africa, has provided medical supplies and equipment to eastern European countries, has contributed thousands of pounds to the campaign to end polio and has promoted youth activities, all with the ever generous support of the people of Chichester.

` New complex AWARD-WINNING holiday park business Bunn Leisure has opened the doors on its new £18m entertainment complex as it finalises its most ambitious construction project to date.

The state-of-the-art White Horse complex is part of an ongoing £23m investment programme at the 300-acre holiday complex on the stunning Selsey peninsula in West Sussex.

It includes a Riviera-style swimming pool and changing village, multi-level soft play area, an arcade, fully covered multi sports zone, numerous restaurants and bars, an exclusive lounge, a 10-pin bowling alley, and a new entertainment venue seating 1,400 guests.

Bunn Leisure has already built a £5m new head office and reception building and plans for the park’s exclusive mile of private beach include a new fish and chip shop, a beachside café and a beach shop.

Continued investment across the Bunn Leisure sites, split into three holiday villages and a touring park, will also see an extended go kart track, introduction of branded quick service restaurants, and further holiday homes sited on a 92-base development on Claudia’s Field.

Managing director John Bunn said Bunn Leisure was busier than ever, reporting a 117.5 per cent increase in turnover in the last five years.

Formula One's Schumacher is celebrated at Goodwood

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THIS YEAR the Festival of Speed celebrated ‘Speed Kings – Motorsport’s Record Breakers’ and a special feature was held, celebrating the life of Michael Schumacher – the most successful driver in Formula 1 history.

Schumacher, aged 50, is a retired German racing driver who raced in Formula One for Jordan Grand Prix, Benetton and Ferrari, where he spent most of his career.

With 2019 also being the 25th anniversary of the German ace’s first F1 World Championship, the special tribute saw a grid of cars that spanned Schumacher’s career, including every one of his title-winning Ferraris.

A capacity crowd and VIPs including Michael's wife, Corinna, FIA president and former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt, Luca di Montezemolo, former chairman of Ferrari, along with the Duke of Richmond, looked on at the unique display.

Also on hand were other luminaries who featured strongly in Michael’s career, including Ross Brawn and 1996 world champion Damon Hill, whose battle with Michael was one of the most iconic of his career.

Schumacher suffered a severe head injury and was left in a coma for six months following a ski-ing accident in

2013 where he fell and hit his head on a rock.

As well as F1 cars from Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes, the Schumacher collection also included the Van Diemen Formula Ford RF88 in which he finished sixth in the 1988 German Formula Ford Championship, the Mercedes 190E, in which he contested four DTM races in 1991, and the Mercedes C11 Group C, in which Michael won the season finale in Mexico alongside Jochen Mass.

Brawn said: "Anyone at his level has to have natural talent. You can work as hard as you like but, if you haven’t got that natural talent as a gift, you won’t succeed. When you marry that inner gift with the approach, dedication and commitment and his character, he was a huge catalyst for every team he was part of. It's full speed ahead as petrol heads see fastest hill climb speed smashed

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THREE glorious days of sunshine were followed by a wet day for the 26th annual Festival Of Speed at Goodwood.

The prestigious event, which attracts people from across the world, was another show-stopper, with a theme of ‘Speed Kings, Motorsport Record Breakers’.

With famous Formula One and Le Mans drivers including Australian Mark Webber, Brazilians Rubens Barrichello and Emerson Fittipaldi and Damon Hill, visitors were in for a treat, getting up close to all the action.

This year, the festival celebrated 70 years of Aston Martin with the famous sculpture depicting a single car, DBR1, outside the Goodwood House. Each day, at 1pm, Aston Martins lined up outside and fireworks were set off to mark the celebrations.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID. R set the fastest ever time up the Goodwood hill climb course, completing the legendary climb in 00:41:18 seconds on Saturday.

The previous record of 00:41:60 stood for 20 years, and was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13.

The all-electric Volkswagen was piloted by two-time Le Mans 24 Hours-winner Romain Dumas.

The state-of-the-art ID.R averaged 101.4mph along the challenging 1.16-

mile course.

The remarkable Volkswagen can accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.25 seconds, topping out at 168mph.

Motorsport director Sven Smeets, from Volkswagen, said: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb is one of the most iconic hill climbs in the world. The track is so narrow and difficult to master, with zero room for error. Dumas and the whole Volkswagen team performed flawlessly to set the record.

“A change is taking place in the field of production vehicles and in motorsport.

Electric cars are becoming increasingly more powerful and it’s great to see them now rivalling combustion engines on track. To get an idea of how far we’ve developed the car, in 2018 we ran a 00:43.86 – this year we were almost three seconds faster.”

Also on Saturday, international stunt driver, Terry Grant, drove the length of the track and up the hill on just two wheels in a Jaguar F-Type.

Terry is the holder of multiple worldrecords, including having executed the highest loop-the-loop in a car, the fastest two-wheel mile and the highest number of doughnuts in 100 seconds.

He continued to entertain the crowds in the arena, a new area for drift cars and stunts, by performing doughnuts in his vehicles around another stuntman on a motorbike. The crowd looked in on awe as the motorists did handstands while Terry drove within inches of him in a circular motion.

The Red Arrows were easily visible in the sky at 11am on Friday, performing their iconic moves, followed by the Blades Aerobatic Team, who performed the remaining three days. The Red Arrows had to cancel their display on Sunday afternoon due to forecast poor weather.

Elsewhere, Emerson Fittipaldi was reunited with his legendary Lotus 72, Honda revealed their new electric city car, which goes simply by the name of “e” and Sir Jackie Stewart was honoured with a special tribute.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of his first of three Formula One world championship drivers’ titles, and gathered at Goodwood were a raft of cars driven by ‘JYS’ in his pomp. Sir Jackie won 27 World Championship Grand Prix from 99 starts.

Interviewed by his former protégé, Indy superstar Dario Franchitti, Sir Jackie said: “It’s a wonderful privilege to be here. I’ve had a wonderful life, blessed. Helen here has looked after me for 57 years of marriage, I’ve got my two sons, I’ve got the Matra in which I won my first British Grand Prix, the two Tyrrells and the BRM in which I set my first lap record and won the Monaco Grand Prix. His Grace puts on a magnificent show. There’s really nothing like it. The British fans know more about the sport than anyone else in the world. They have such an appreciation. It is a real honour to be here.”

` Cancer services CHICHESTER MP, Gillian Keegan continued her campaign to improve radiotherapy services in the UK. The Member of Parliament has been working to secure a linac machine, used in radiotherapy treatment, at St Richard’s Hospital as well as to improve services nationally.

To achieve this, Mrs Keegan cofounded the All Party Parliamentary Group for Radiotherapy along with Tim Farron, former leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Grahame Morris, Labour MP for Easington.

The three met with the Minister of State for Health, Stephen Hammond MP to discuss some of their key concerns with the current services. The Minister listened closely taking on board all the issues raised. He informed the group he will be investigating many of their points and will respond in due course.

The Minister also suggested the APPG continue to work with the Department for Health and Social Care and encouraged MPs present to also speak to Seema Kenedy MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Primary Care, who is overseeing the UK cancer strategy.

After the meeting, Mrs Keegan said: "I am very grateful to the Minister for his time. The meeting was very productive and we covered a lot of ground. The Minister listened carefully to our concerns and I look forward to hearing from him on many of the points raised.

My colleagues and I will be reaching out to the Minister for Primary Care for a meeting in due course."

Children entertain elderly

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN at a Chichester school welcomed care home residents to their grounds on Monday afternoon.

Pupils from Oakwood School hosted their guests for a tea party for the second year running.

Deputy head teacher, Yvonne Lee, said the aim was to reach out to the community.

She said: "We have around five of our care homes from the area that we liaise with and regularly the younger children from around two and a half to six go out and visit the homes in small groups.

"They do fun activities and crafts and the elderly come to a lot of our events and shows so they are all familiar faces now. It's really lovely."

Yvonne said it was important for children to understand the elderly were part of their community and part of their lives and having respect.

She added: "It's important that they work alongside each other to feel valued and reach out. We are very aware that we are extremely blessed with our facilities.

We are very lucky and if we can do anything to bring people together to use the facilities and share the happiness then it's a great thing to do.

"The children get all excited especially to visit the care homes. We also know that some of the residents don't get out.

It's all very natural and not forced."

Linda Farr, activities co-ordinator, and Anna Paterson, registered manager from Cornelius House in Fishbourne, had brought residents along for the tea party and said it was a wonderful event.

Linda said: "They are really good to us. We have been four times here and we really enjoy it. They really look after everybody and everyone enjoys themselves.

"The word gets around in the home and we have more and more people wanting to come each time. When we came in, the children were waiting outside and we had a little welcome. They are all very attentive."

Anna added: "It takes the residents back in time to when their own children were at school and their grandchildren.

They have a real connection.

"The children don't have any expectations."

Olivia Dickens, aged ten, said she really enjoyed the afternoon. She said: "I greeted people at the door and served tea and cake.

"It's been really nice to do it because we've given people a really nice day. It's a really good feeling.

"I did a speech and drama piece from Macbeth where I was one of the witches.

I think it went quite well."

Lexi Cotterel, also aged ten, said everyone was really friendly and she enjoyed making them smile.

She added: "I performed a piece from The Jungle Book, we did the Bear Necessities and Monkey Business. Our guests were joining in, dancing and clapping along and smiling."

Isobel Ford, aged 11, also helped serve tea and coffee. She said: "I really enjoyed serving them teas and coffees and I also did a speech and drama piece from The Tempest.

"I really enjoyed that because I rehearsed really hard, just to try and get it right. It was just really fun!"

Bob receives war medals 75 years on

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SECOND World War veteran from Selsey has received his war medals after almost 74 years.

Albert Walker, known affectionately as Bob, was just 18 years of age when in 1939 he joined the RAF's Bomber Command and served as a chef in the mess, feeding troops.

Bob has particularly strong memories of Peshwar where life under canvas meant dealing with snakes, cooking in the midday heat and sleeping

contrastingly cold nights.

He reached the rank of Sergeant and when he de-mobbed, returned to family life in Bognor Regis as his father set him to work in their leather handbag and luggage shop under the arcade.

With his wife, Joan, Bob raised their children and continued running the shop until early retirement.

Bob now resides at the old Malthouse Residential Care Home in Selsey where celebrations of this year's 75th anniversary of D-Day unravelled the mystery of Bob's missing medals.

As memories and stories were shared,

Bob, now aged 98, revealed how he believed he had never received his medals from the Second World War. Without wasting any time, the manager at the care home, Angie Shepherd, liaised with staff, Sue Sneath, Nicola Rich and Mary Oliver, acting on Bob's behalf to investigate.

Bob still knew his service number from the war and the Ministry of Defence was contacted, where his story was relayed and medals applied for.

Veterans badge were inside.

Staff at the care home decided that Bob deserved a special surprise presentation and celebration.

The community all rallied together, Selsey's Royal British Legion steward, Mary Hausted agreed to host the event, The RAF Association (RAFA) south east welfare office contact, Sue Smith, sent Bob a squadron tie and gifted funds for a new outfit.

When there wasn't enough money for shoes, footwear company, CosyFeet generously donated a new pair for Bob. Presenting the medals was Bognor Regis' RAF Association's president,

David said: "Bob really deserves this.

It is important to recognise this and it's really good that the care home have done this."

Local singers Eileen Burgin, Gill Farnden, Peter Driscoll and Carol Driscoll gave their time to perform some of Bob's favourite songs in uniform costumes.

Bob is finally, and proudly, in possession of his long-awaited medals after all these years. After receiving his medals, he said: "I am so surprised. I am absolutely speechless."

Uni's success

BY LOTTE PEGLER lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk RECENTLY published statistics have pushed the University of Chichester up 38 places in the UK league tables.

The National Student Survey (NSS) results show the university at 53rd out of the 157 universities and colleges involved.

Chichester performed well across the board, with its education courses being ranked first for overall satisfaction.

Counselling also topped the list, while art ranked third in the UK and overall satisfaction of the university was rated at 85 per cent, the national average being 83.

Teacher training quality was one of the best in the country at sixth place.

University vice-chancellor, Professor Jane Longmore, said: "It is extremely pleasing to receive national recognition for our commitment to creating a studentcentred learning community.

"To have risen to the top third of the NSS table is also a great credit to our staff and their commitment to our students."

The survey, completed by over 330,000 students from across the country, was commissioned by the Office for Students.

Moyin Ekundayo, the Student Union's president, said: "When I ask what makes Chichester special they tell me about the sense of belonging they experience.

"Being here is being part of a community where everyone knows everyone else and everyone is included."

The results were published last Friday.

Heart bike ride

THE British Heart Foundation (BHF) is calling on the people of West Sussex to help support a fundraising cycle ride on July 28, at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The ride has been running for an impressive 21 years, and this year the BHF is hoping it will raise at least £10,000 to help fund life saving research into heart and circulatory diseases.

The iconic 2.4 mile track will be open from 10am to 5pm and will be free from motorised vehicles. The event is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities, and volunteers are needed to help keep participants safe, to support registration and to give out medals once riders are finished.

Local BHF fundraising manager Hannah Miller said: “We’re really looking forward to the bike ride at Goodwood motor circuit! It’s set to be a really

fantastic day and we hope to see lots of people coming together on two or three wheels to join help us beat heartbreak from heart and circulatory diseases.

Events like this simply couldn’t take place without the support of dedicated BHF volunteers, so if you are interested in helping out and can spare at least three hours on the day – do get in touch for more information.”

According to the latest BHF estimates, there are nearly 15,000 people in Chichester alone living with the burden of heart and circulatory disease, with far more across the wider region. Funds raised from events like Goodwood can make a real difference, helping to fund research into the causes, preventions and treatments of these conditions.

` Dementia events CHICHESTER Festival Theatre will be hosting a week of free dementia and family friendly events from August 12 – 17.

The week forms part of the theatre’s ageless campaign: a programme of work that provides life-changing experiences for people who might otherwise miss out, and helps to enrich people’s lives with the joy of creative expression, socialising and the treat of seeing a show.

` £1 train journeys MINIATURE steam train rides can be enjoyed in Chichester this Sunday.

Members of the public have been invited to an open afternoon at the Chichester and District Society of Model Engineers.

Two layouts will be in operation and visitors will have the chance to drive a ‘00’ gauge train, as well as seeing a larger gauge top railway in action.

The event is taking place from 1pm to 5pm at the Blackberry Lane headquarters. Admission is free, train rides £1.

Doubt over future of county libraries QUESTIONS hang over the future of a number of West Sussex libraries amid county council plans to cut up to £500,000 from the service’s budget.

A report due to be discussed by the cabinet next week said ‘several’ tier 6 libraries could be closed to help save money.

There are 13 tier 6 libraries in the county, including Arundel, Petworth, Southbourne, and the Witterings.

The cuts are among a list of suggestions for the 2020/21 budget, which could save more than £22m – which opposition members said they would fight ‘tooth and nail’.

The list also includes plans to close two of the county’s 11 household waste recycling centres, reintroduce charges for DIY waste, and stopping the mobile waste service in Selsey and the Witterings.

These three changes would save £720,000.

The council recently came in for huge criticism after cutting £4m from its housing related support budget – with dire warnings as to the consequences for vulnerable and homeless people.

Now there are plans to cut as much as £1.3m from the remaining £2.3m in 2020/21.

This would be achieved by ‘reviewing preventative contracts and restricting the service to statutory responsibilities only’.

There could also be bad news for food banks, Citizens Advice centres and children and family centres with plans to completely cut the Local

Assistance Network (LAN) budget.

The budget was cut from £800,000 to £200,000 this financial year and losing it completely will see food banks lose £35,000, children and family centres lose £80,000 and Citizens Advice lose £35,000.

The final £50,000 will be lost from social enterprises – businesses with a community aim.

Also on the list are plans to reduce subsidised bus services by up to £200,000, to reduce the number of hours during which disabled people can use their concessionary bus passes, and to stop providing passes for carers/companions.

This would also save up to £200,000 Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We are in the very early stages of planning next year’s budget in very uncertain financial times, so we need to consider as many options as possible.

“Like many other local authorities across the country, we’re continuing to face unprecedented financial pressures mainly due to the increasing demand on social care services, a reduction in government funding and uncertainty around future funding.

“We have made over £239 million of savings since 2010, with our funding cut £155 million by government, but we still have to save £75.5m million over the next four years.

“Regrettably, we need to consider significant savings."

New hospice for Post area officially opens its doors

New patients are now set to experience the future of end of life care in the community with the soft opening of St Wilfrid’s brand new £16.2 million home in Walton Lane, Bosham.

The new hospice officialy opened to patients on Monday, July 8, with many enhanced facilities and a brand new environment.

Welcoming and calming family areas enable family and friends to make the most of every moment with their loved one, staying over if they wish. Two of

these rooms will be larger still, to enable families with children to stay overnight.

An expanded Living Well Centre offers a greater variety of therapeutic and social activities to boost wellbeing and enable visitors to live more independently for longer.

There is also a chapel and prayer room for personal reflection with a publicly available volunteer-run café for visitors to enjoy coming soon.

Chief executive Alison Moorey said: "Your new hospice will have the feeling of being a home from home for patients, families and visitors alike. St Wilfrid’s is all about tailored care filled with love and compassion.

"We rely on the support of the community for our work to continue

Dear Editor, I have noticed today (July 2) that the litter and recycle bin has been removed from the bus top in West Street. It was behind the bus shelter on the cathedral side (55/60 bus stop).

We do need that litter bin or else the pavement will be littered with cigarette ends.

I know a lot of people smoke while waiting for a bus.

Another litter bin which is also missing is the one outside the old post office.

I did read your article in the Chichester Post on June 28.

My suggestion is heaving two bins of different colours, set apart with labels.

Unfortunately, one cannot bargain on people finishing their drinks.

MP takes part in football match to support campaign CHICHESTER'S MP flew to Lyon to take part in world record-breaking game of women’s football last month.

Gillian Keegan is part of the UK Parliamentary women’s football team who went over to add their support to the campaign run by Equal Playing Field.

Lyon was chosen as it is the biggestspending women’s football club, pioneers in women’s football and hosts of the World Cup semi-finals and final.

The Football Festival itself took place at the club training ground by women old and young, and at every skill level.

After 69 hours of continuous play, 807 players on the pitch and a score of 404 - 369, the Equal Playing Field Campaign completed their goal and achieved the world record attempt for the largest number of players to appear continuously in a five-a-side match.

Mrs Keegan and her team were on the pitch for the early afternoon slot on Saturday for nearly two hours in 40-degree heat. The Chichester MP did not seem to mind, posting on social media her excitement of being world record holders.

She said: "Growing up, football was at

the heart of my home city of Liverpool and like many across the country, I have really enjoyed watching the FIFA Women’s World Cup. "Sport, and in particular football, is the most unifying and inspiring peace and development tool in the world.

"There is a lot more to do to gain equality in sport and in particular football but the Lionesses have done a lot to change the perception of women’s football and long may it continue.’

MP Tracey Crouch, who founded the Parliamentary women’s team, said: "We would all like to be lionesses."

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK July 12 - 19 YESTERDAY, written by Richard Curtis and directed by Danny Boyle, stars Himesh Patel as Jack Malik, a young Suffolk singer-songwriter.

He doesn’t draw much of a crowd—four or five people, mostly his pals. One of them, Ellie Appleton (Lily James), is also his manager, who believes in his talent. Jack is less confident of musical success, protesting, “It’d take a miracle.”

To which Ellie replies: “Miracles happen.” Ellie is strangely, spookily right. After a freak global event, Jack is the only person on earth who remembers the Beatles and their fab music. But is ‘All You Need is Love’ enough to project Jack to stardom?

When he sings ‘Yesterday,’ his friends agree that it’s beautiful, although, as one of them argues, “it’s not Coldplay.” Thanks for that. ‘Come Together’ for the latest Boyle confection.

Ethan Hawke is in hawkish, primal scream mode as petty criminal Lars Nystrom in The Captor.

City welcomes other cathedrals' singers

Southern Cathedrals Festival Chichester Cathedral & other city venues July 18-21 THE 2019 Southern Cathedrals Festival takes place in Chichester from July 18-21, with the combined choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals performing in an exciting programme of events, performances and services held in Chichester Cathedral and other iconic venues around the city centre.

The opening concert will be sung by the combined boy choristers and lay clerks on the afternoon of July 18 and there is a celebrity organ recital will be given by Franz Hauk, of Ingolstadt Cathedral in Germany.

The following afternoon will see a recital at Pallant House Gallery while choral evensong

at the cathedral will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast. The evening concert, Sing Unto the Lord, will be sung by the girl choristers of Salisbury and Winchester and the combined lay clerks.

West Sussex Youth Wind Orchestra perform a concert at St Paul's Church, Chichester, on Saturday, July 20, at 3pm, then the final major event is a performance at the cathedral of Bach's St John Passion, at 6pm. IT'S easy to find Italian restaurants in your area these days, but hard to find an authentic one.

What better way to enjoy delicious food than by visiting an establishment which is run by an Italian?

Max Miricola, from Puglia in southern Italy, brings you authentic Italian food and wine in a relaxed, informal setting at reasonable prices.

Mamma Mia is simply a hidden gem, nestled neatly between the sea and the shops, offering an extensive menu of pasta, pizza and much more.

In the end, I chose Fungo al Forno: baked mushroom topped with goat’s cheese and sun-dried tomatoes at £5.20 and my colleague opted for Bruschetta: cherry tomatoes, garlic, onions and pesto sauce, for £4.25.

The starters are just the right size for holding off hunger pangs and tasted perfect.

My mushroom was cooked to perfection and the tang of the sun-dried tomatoes complemented the creamy goats cheese.

Marie commented that her bruschetta was also cooked well with a delicious fresh flavour to the pesto.

We weren't very adventurous when it came to main dishes, both choosing pizza.

Marie opted for Prosciutto e Ananas: Italian ham, pineapple and mozzarella, priced at £8.65 and Quattro Formaggi: an all-time Italian classic with four cheeses: mozzarella, parmesan, pecorino and gorgonzola, for £8.95.

As a massive cheese fan, I have to say I wasn't disappointed with the taste sensation of all four cheeses perfectly balanced.

The thin and crispy base was just delicious and you can tell everything is freshly cooked and homemade.

My friend, Marie, although opting for a classic ham and pineapple pizza, said she was blown away by the Italian style and was extremely pleased with her choice.

The restaurant has a range of other pizzas and their pasta dishes include Farfalle con Panna e Salmone: smoked salmon in a cream and vodka sauce; Farfalle alla Boscaiola: mushrooms, spicy sausages, cream and tomato sauce; Spaghetti Montemesola: garlic, chillies, anchovies and virgin olive oil, and Linguine Rucola e Gamberetti: prawns, rocket, cherry tomatoes, garlic, chilli and vermouth.

You are also welcome to combine any sauce with a pasta shape of your choice if you want to mix things up.

Despite the two of us feeling completely stuffed, we couldn't resist a delicious dessert. We decided to step away from the more indulgent desserts such as homemade tiramisu and cassata and instead I opted for a homemade lemon cheesecake with cream and Marie chose lemon sorbet.

My lemon cheesecake was so light and fluffy it simply melted in my mouth but with a clean and crisp lemon tang.

Marie's sorbet was a really invigorating and sharp sensation but a really refreshing feel after a lot of carbs.

CommunityNews&Views THE NOVIUM Museum is asking people to give their views on its services to help shape future plans.

The museum, which is provided by Chichester District Council, is launching a survey to gather opinions on current museum services and views on how these could be improved to best suit the needs of local people and visitors to the district.

The short survey goes live on Monday, July 15, and the deadline for responding is midnight on September 1. Everyone that takes part can opt to be in with a chance of winning a £50 voucher to spend in The Novium Museum shop and café.

People can take part online at: chichester.gov.uk/letstalknovium There is also a list of frequently asked questions to help put the survey into context and explain some of the terms used.

A paper copy of the questionnaire can be requested by emailing letstalk@chichester.gov.uk or calling 01243 521261.

“The award winning Novium Museum celebrates Chichester District’s vibrant history and showcases a range of incredibly popular collections and exhibitions,” says Cllr Roy Briscoe, cabinet member for community services and culture at Chichester District Council.

“In the last few years, the museum has gone from strength to strength, welcoming thousands of visitors to incredibly successful exhibitions such as ‘Tim Peake: An Extraordinary Journey’ and ‘Bricks Britannia: A History of Britain in Lego Bricks’. NEXT MONTH, National Cycle to Work Day, the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, is encouraging thousands of enthusiastic riders to hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling.

Cycling has seen an increase in popularity over the last few years with great local events like the Velo South and triathlons across the county.

Cycling is a fun and effective form of exercise, but some worry that pressure from a bicycle saddle can cause urinary, sexual, prostate problems and can even increase your risk of prostate cancer.

As a keen cyclist, Simon Woodhams, Consultant Urologist joined his colleagues last year to raise over £30,000 for local urology services, taking part in their own version of the cancelled Velo South.

He explains: ‘The prostatespecific antigen, or PSA, test is the current gold standard for identifying prostate cancer.

Although studies are mixed about the effects of cycling on the PSA test, a few have linked bicycling riding to temporary elevated PSA levels, which

could lead to a false screening.

If you are concerned about the possibility and have an upcoming PSA test, you may consider avoiding cycling before blood sampling.

Regular bicycle riding does not cause prostate cancer, and it may even reduce your risk for developing it.

"If you have a chronic prostate problem that’s provoked by using a conventional seat, you can switch to a recumbent seat.

‘Noseless’ bicycle saddles can reduce numbness, pressure and genital discomfort in male cyclists. A traditional bike saddle puts 25 per cent to 40 per cent of your body's weight on the nerves and blood vessels down there, but a nonose saddle shifts that weight toward the sit bones."

TWO BROTHERS from Chichester completed a 10k race in Portsmouth in honour of their father.

Charlie Barrett, aged ten and his brother Max, were devastated to learn their dad had been diagnosed with cancer.

They both decided they wanted to help raise money for cancer to help their dad get better.

The brothers decided to do the 10k Race For Life at

Southsea which they both completed in the rain and wind too.

They managed to raise £620 between them. Their mum, Lisa Thompson said: "We are all so proud of them and they are proud of themselves too.

"Their dad is currently going through chemo so they have seen him quite unwell from it but are both being very strong for him. It’s a big thing for them both to see their dad go through."

THERE’S still time for budding triathletes to get involved in one of the city’s biggest sporting events.

People in Chichester are being urged not to miss their chance to take part in the 2019 Natures Way Foods Chichester Triathlon Series, which is taking place over this weekend.

Last year, more than 900 participants aged eight to 85 turned out to compete in a variety of races across the two days, and this year event hosts Everyone Active are hoping for even bigger numbers.

Now in its 13th year, the Chichester Triathlon has evolved from a single race into a weekend-long festival of activity. Young people aged eight – 16 can take part in either an aquathlon or triathlon on the Saturday, before adults get their turn to compete on the Sunday.

Those over the age of 16 can get involved in a Sprint Distance Triathlon, consisting of a 400-metre pool swim, 33-kilometre bike ride, and a five-kilometre run. Alternatively they can opt to take part in an Olympic-distance race featuring a 600-metre pool swim, a 42-kilometre bike ride, and a 10-kilometre run. Both races can be entered into as part of a team or individually.

Competitors can also take part in an aquabike race, consisting of a 400-metre swim and 33-kilometre bike ride, or an aquathlon, which will see competitors swim the same distance but followed by a 5-kilometre run. A Duathlon race, which involves a 5km run, followed by a 33km bike ride, and then another 5km run, is also an option.

ASSISTANCE dog Quintus and his human partner Rosie have won third place in the Assistance Dog Charity category in The Kennel Club’s Photographer of the Year 2019 competition.

The photo of the pair will be displayed in The Kennel Club’s Art Gallery as part of the 2019 Winners Exhibition.

Rosie entered the competition to raise awareness of Canine Partners, the charity which transformed her life by partnering her with canine partner Quintus in November 2014.

“I believe Quintus really deserves this as he is one in a million and is always looking for ways to help,” says Rosie, a 57-year-old from Oxford, Oxfordshire.

“Quintus came bounding into my life four years ago and absolutely transformed it – where I was stuck before I had an assistance dog, Quintus will now help me and is happy to do so.”

Rosie has a variety of conditions that mean she is a full-time wheelchair user, including a spinal injury and ME. “With Quintus I am back out and about again and together we can do the seemingly impossible,” says Rosie.

“He’s absolutely fabulous and does exactly what it says on his jacket – he is an amazing dog who is transforming my life.”

Canine Partners is a national charity based in Midhurst, that trains assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

“Quintus is my best friend and we have such a strong bond – together we are one,” says Rosie.

“People need to know about Canine Partners and the lifetransforming work they do.”

The city's beautiful Bishop’s Palace gardens

f Chichester Cathedral from the gardens in today's view SITUATED in the south west quadrant of Chichester are the beautiful and tranquil Bishop’s Palace gardens which are bounded on the west and south sides by the City Walls.

Following the Norman Conquest in 1066, it was decided that episcopal sees (the district or office of a bishop or an archbishop) should be removed to cities or larger towns.

Accordingly, the see at Selsey was removed to Chichester.

After the building of the cathedral, it was decided to build a residence for the Bishop as well as accommodation for other dignitaries.

An area close to the cathedral was secured for this in 1147; Pope Eugenius III confirmed the land in the South-West quadrant of the city could be used for this purpose. Bishops Palace was built with land which was perhaps originally a farm and, over time, became a park or a formal garden.

This main approach to the Bishop’s Palace and its gardens are along Canon Lane. The other entrance to the gardens is from Avenue d’Chartres.

It is likely that during the Middle Ages the gardens were used for food production, a few apple trees from this time remain. Over time it has evolved in to a park or pleasure grounds, certainly from the 18th century onwards.

The shape and design of the garden has changed over time but the current design is largely down to the efforts of Bishop Robert Carr (1824-31). Several bishops, but particularly Richard Dunford (1870-95), were interested in gardening and planted species of tree new to England. There is an arboretum that spreads across the gardens over on the western side. It has trees such as the Handkerchief Tree, Wollemia Pine, and Indian Bean Tree.

Bishop George Bell (1929–1958), encouraged the use of the gardens, which were not at this time open to the public.

During the Whitsuntide Festival in 1930, he brought singers and dancers in to the gardens as part of the celebrations, a tradition which continued throughout his time as Bishop.

When Eric Kemp was appointed Bishop in 1974 he decided to open the gardens to the public. An arrangement was made with the then newly-formed Chichester District Council for them to be responsible for maintaining the gardens. The arrangement worked well until the beginning of the 21st century by which time Bay Trees had come to dominate in places, creating a gloomy atmosphere.

In 2006, the Friends of Bishop’s Palace Gardens was formed with a view to working on a restoration scheme. Also in 2006, Chichester District Council appointed a park and green spaces officer. This role, along with the support of the Friends and the district council, worked on a brief over the next four years.

A garden landscape designer was appointed to draw up plans for renovation work which began in September, 2009. A vista and new pergola were created and the ramparts were made more accessible.

In December, 2009, as part of the BBC’s Breathing Space - Tree O’clock a hedge of beech seedlings were planted along the path around the ramparts. A wildlife area with bog garden fills one corner, intended to encourage birds and bees as well as other insects. The piles of logs in odd corners gradually rot down to provide insect habitats.

officially re-opened on June 29, 2010, with Bishop John Hind giving a blessing.

In July, 2010, and 2012 the gardens received a Green Flag award as well as winning a Chichester in Bloom award in September, 2011. The Friends continue to invest time and effort in the gardens maintaining them for visitors to enjoy.

In February, 2019, they received a City of Chichester community award.

Darts PAULA DUCKETT proved herself to be the champion of champions in the Bognor Friday Night Summer Darts League, finishing top of a high calibre field containing no less than five former champs.

Five-time champion, Hayley Phillips (Hunston Hares), was first to fall, losing out in a deciding leg to the reigning champion, Emma Hackett (Aldingbourne Mavericks), in the first round of the Shenagh Wickens Ladies knockout.

Hackett herself would then lose to another former champion, and Aldingbourne teammate, Paula Duckett in the first semi-final.

The second semi-final would see the 2012 champion, Karen Wilson (Richmond Rebels), lose to the 2017 champion, Bridget Derwojed.

With such a high-quality field, the final was inevitably a close run affair, with Duckett withstanding some heavy scoring from Derwojed, who hit a 135 in the final leg but failed to leave herself on a double, before sealing her Summer Ladies knockout title, 12 years after her first, with double ten in the fourth leg.

Lancelot looks to make Glorious history LANCELOT Du Lac will have to upset the odds if he’s to become the first dual winner in more than 50 years of one of Glorious Goodwood’s most lucrative races.

No horse since Sky Diver in 1967 and 1968 has won the ÂŁ250,000 Unibet Stewards' Cup more than once.

And bookmakers remain unconvinced Lancelot will end that wait this year, placing the Dean Ivory-trained horse and winner of the Unibet Stewards' Cup in 2017, at 66/1.

More than 100,000 people are expected to attend Glorious Goodwood, from Tuesday, July 30, to Saturday, August 3.

Prize money for the five-day racing spectacular now exceeds ÂŁ5.5 million including the ÂŁ1-million Qatar Sussex Stakes, the cavalry charge that is the Qatar Steward's Cup and the marathon Qatar Goodwood Cup. Ed Nicholson, head of Kindred Racing Communications and Sponsorship, said: "The Qatar Goodwood Festival is one of the highlights of the racing calendar and I am delighted that Unibet has extended its association from sponsoring three races last year to becoming the exclusive official betting partner, and in addition to sponsoring no less than nine races during the five days, including

the £250,000 Unibet Stewards Cup and the £150,000 Unibet Golden Mile.�

Another horse hoping to replicate past form in the race will be Justanotherbottle (25/1) aiming to better a short-head defeat last year.

Trainer Declan Carroll said: "Justanotherbottle is in good form.

"The Unibet Stewards' Cup has been on the agenda for a while, given how well he ran there last year, and hopefully we can get him there in similar form.�

Four-year-old Flavius Titus is the 12/1 market leader with Unibet after two victories from three starts in 2019.

Newbury Listed victor Khaadem, llightlyraced three-year-old Victory Day and 2018 Great St Wilfrid Handicap winner Gunmetal also figure prominently in the betting at 14/1.

Early betting indicates the ÂŁ150,000 Unibet Golden Mile will be a tough race to call.

Hamdan Al Maktoum's Afaak, who rose to prominence with his nail-biting nose victory over the mare Clon Coulis in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, is one of five 12/1 cofavourites with race sponsor Unibet.

The other market leaders include recent Listed runner-up New Graduate and History Writer.

Darts ANDY STUBBS held his nerve to claim the Over 50s knockout title for a fourth time. The Hunston Hares player had to win it the hard way after beating reigning champion, Keith Robinson, of Chi Snooker Club, over three legs.

His final opponent, Gary English, had an easier time in his semi-final as he won in straight legs against Stubbs’ Hares teammate Graham Clear.

Stubbs set his stall out early in the final with three tons in the first leg and clinched it with double five just as his opponent had caught him up at the doubles.

English then took an 18-darter including a 140 to claim the second leg before a mixture of heavy scoring and double trouble saw Stubbs seize back the initiative in a tight third.

English fought back again with some high-quality darts, narrowly missing a 124 out shot before tidying up with his next throw, to take the game to a final leg.

A 125 put Stubbs in command as English’s scoring deserted him leaving the Hunston man to seal his fourth title.

Middling Middleton stuck in mid-table MIDDLETON will aim to show they are the best of the rest in the ECB Premier in what is expected to be a tightly-fought contest at East Grinstead this weekend.

The two clubs are separated by just four points and one position in the table after 10 games and will both be desperate to claim maximum points if they have any hopes of cutting the gap to the top three.

Middleton’s hopes of breaking away from a congested mid table were dealt a blow in a tight, high-scoring game against Three Bridges last time out.

The home side set a challenging target of 235 thanks to some quick scoring from opener Harry Hovey (61 from 56 balls) and wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawatt (94 off just 64 balls) and a more doughty 35 not out from Matthew Reynolds who kept the innings on track as wickets started to fall.

And hopes for a home victory were raised further still when early breakthroughs rocked

Three Bridges’ chase to leave them three down with only 55 on the board.

But a patient partnership between middle order pair Joe Walker and the aptly named David Winn put the north Sussex side in total command.

Three late Craig Fowle wickets (3-51) briefly put the outcome back in doubt but ultimately it was too little, too late, and Three Bridges claimed the 28 points by four wickets to move within 21 points, but still four places, of their hosts in an increasingly congested middle.

East Grinstead head into the game on the back of a three match unbeaten streak following an impressive six-wicket victory over Preston Nomads.

Middleton will be wary of East Grinstead wicketkeeperbatsman Leo Cammish, who led the successful chase with a wellpaced 84 not out while former Sussex seamer Lewis Hatchett opens their bowling.

CHICHESTER Priory Park can begin looking up the table rather than down after an impressive bowling display broke their confidence-sapping losing streak last weekend.

Daniel Joseph (3-8), Matthew Geffen (3-36) and Abhishek Raut (4-16) all excelled with the ball as they skittled Burgess Hill on their own ground.

The home side’s chase never got started, with Joseph claiming a wicket in his first over while the final four wickets for the hosts fell for just two runs.

The 124-run victory was built on a determined Chi batting display built around the contributions of captain Jay Hartard (42 off 49 balls) and top order batsman Joe de la Fuente (66 from 101 balls).

They now have Lindfield, just one place and 17 points better off, in their sights when they come to Priory Park this weekend.

Bognor, on the other hand, will be hoping to get back to winning ways at home to Burgess Hill on Saturday after a below-par batting performance saw them slip to defeat last time out.

A top order collapse left Bognor fighting for a foothold but only Joe Ashmore and Taylor Jaycocks could stick around long enough to give themselves a total just over 150 to bowl at.

It nearly proved enough as Bognor’s attack was able to send seven Haywards Heath batsmen back to the hutch with Roy Kaia and Joe Ashmore, with the wickets each, doing their best to salvage the situation though ultimately it was in vain as the hosts nervously chased down the runs in just over 35 overs.

Pagham’s deep batting line-up will be rubbing their hands with glee at the expectation of another glut of runs when they travel to basement dwellers Stirlands on Saturday.

Pagham smashed 322-9 at their last outing at Littlehampton to keep pace with the leading pack in Division 3 West.

The mammoth total was built around Ryan Barratt’s fine century and he received useful support throughout the middle order and tail all the way down to Sean Ritter coming in at ten.

It was more than sizeable total for victory with their visitors falling 77 runs short.

Rocks off holiday and back to work

THE ROCKS haven’t rediscovered the winning formula just yet but there are few concerns as the club test their pre-season readiness against higher calibre opposition.

Bognor Regis Town are drawing on the positives of their first outing of the season - a 3-1 defeat to Havant and Waterlooville on Tuesday night.

Coach Robbie Blake said the club was excited about the start of the new season with new signings already in place and more additions to follow as the friendly capped the end of the first week back at training.

The game came just 63 days after the culmination of a 2018/19 season to forget for Bognor including a miserable run of one win in 12 league games to suck the life out of any play-off aspirations.

Fans will probably have to wait a little longer to see a return to winning ways as the club face a Portsmouth side this Tuesday who thrashed them 5-1 at this stage of summer last season and who came so close to promotion to the Championship last season.

After last year’s defeat to Pompey, the Rocks did not taste defeat again for another two months and will be hoping for a

similar start to this season.

Tuesday night’s loss to different Hampshire visitors saw new faces in the starting line-up for Bognor for fans to run the rule over, including keeper Charlie Searle, a potential replacement for crowd favourite Dan Lincoln, who has not confirmed his return for the new season as yet, and Joby Griggs.

Facing a higher ranked side further along in their preparations, almost inevitably the Rocks found themselves behind as Havant bagged two before half-time and another shortly after the restart.

Another new face, trialist Tommy Leigh, did his chances of an extended stay the world of good by bagging a consolation for the Rocks with the game already lost within minutes of coming in.

Tuesday night’s game will kickoff at 7.45pm with tickets £10 for adults and £3 concessions for under-18s.

The season will also see Bognor step back in time to reunite an old partnership.

The Rocks have confirmed that Reynolds Furniture Store will have their name splashed across the team’s strips this year, just as they did a quarter of a century ago.

Everything’s all-Wight for Chi in pre-season CHICHESTER City kicked off their preparations for their first ever season in step 4 with a visit to a classic summer holiday destination.

But it was no vacation for Chi who put in the hard yards under a baking sun to get their pre-season preparations under winning ways against an Isle of Wight XI with goals from Callum Overton and Lukas Jones.

They head to more familiar surroundings this Saturday when they take on Arundel as they build-up sharpness and fitness ahead of their first game in the newly named BetVictor South East Division.

Sidlesham looked to have picked up exactly where they finished last season as they started pre-season with a thumping 4-2 win over familiar foes Bosham on Saturday before following that up on Tuesday with a 2-1 over Premier Division East Preston.

They will step up their preparations with a home game against Rustington on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Bosham will face a difficult start when the new season kicks off again having just learned their first three fixtures will all be on the road.

Tony Hancock’s Robins will travel to reelected St Francis Rangers on August 17 and then Montpelier Villa and Ferring on bank holiday Monday before finally enjoying home comforts against Rottingdean Village on the last day of the month.

Pagham will begin life under new boss Bob Paine on the road at Hamble this Saturday.

The former East Preston manager has taken over at Nyetimber Lane following the

surprise departure of Tom Simmonds.

One of his first competitive fixtures in charge will be against either Worthing

United or Oakwood in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup after the draw was made earlier this month.

Q&A with Rocks manager Jack Pearce

THE Rocks got their preseason fixtures underway this week with a visit from National South side Havant & Waterlooville.

Next up is League One Portsmouth - but despite the tough tests, one man is delighted to see Bognor tun out at Nyewood Lane.

Jack Pearce has been involved with the club for 50 years. And in the second part of the Q&A he reveals his focus for the pre-season and beyond.

How are you feeling about the pre-season fixtures?

Havant was the first one we have and for both clubs it was be about seeing where we are with players.

Obviously they are one step above us. They have had a lot of change round the club with a new manager and investment across the board.

So, the match gave us a chance to see where we are and what more we can do.

The results of pre-season matches do not matter but it is important for us to see how people manage in various phases of the game and give us an idea what more we need to do to get ready for the first competitive match.

What are you expecting from the match against Portsmouth?

It is always a good occasion and our biggest pre-season income generator so it is a very important night for us as football club.

The money we generate from that match goes straight back into supporting the club.

It's a good night for the fans and a real test for the players to go up against full-time pros from a few leagues above us.

Hopefully it will be a good test and set us in good stead

Are we expecting any more additions to the squad?

We are in good shape but there will likely be a few more faces brought in.

We are looking most probably at signing another centre half and also a goalkeeper to push Dan Lincoln.

It's not just the playing squad you look after, it's the ground too - what work has been going on in the past few weeks?

We are lucky to have a great team of volunteers who help keep the ground looking in good condition.

Over summer there have been a general tidy-up which means the ground is looking excellent.

The main priority for us is to get a new toilet block installed on the far side of the ground as the existing portable building is becoming too expensive to repair.

It's likely that we will get round to that during the first few weeks of the season.

Looking long-term, we need to get things in place to increase the seating capacity at the ground.

The plan we have at the moment is to build a 500-seater stand on the near side, which will require a large amount of work moving forward. That will be my swan song!

Are you looking forward to the pre-season trip away later this month?

It's something a bit different and we are delighted to have the chance to take the squad up to the Midlands to help us prepare for the new season.

It will be hard work for the players but it'll be fun, too, and will undoubtedly enhance our team spirit.
