Cracks show in city centre BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE county council is spending almost ÂŁ70,000 a year to repair streets in the city centre, councillors have been told. THe amount was confirmed after a question was raised over deterioration of the pavements in the city centre and how they can be fixed. At the meeting of the South Chichester

County Local Committee at County Hall on Tuesday evening, Cllr Sarah Sharp said: "I am grateful that West Sussex County Council is starting work on repairing the pavements in Chichester city centre. "Can we have assurance that these repairs will be sufficient to withstand the extra use that the streets undergo as a result of the many vans and lorries that the markets use to set up on the city streets? "Will the repairs be good enough to prevent the large number of people

falling over in the city and will they be of a standard to encourage back into the city all those people who no longer shop here for fear of falling over and tripping?" Chris Dye, county council area highway manager, said: "Firstly, we acknowledge that the city centre and the condition of it is not great. "What I would like to set out quite clearly is that we undertake monthly walk inspections of the city centre and we will raise any defect that we find to be unsafe.

"Longer-term, there is the need for a public realm scheme - a complete enhancement for the city centre. "Eight or ten years ago, a group was formed between the city, district and county councils and there is a document to show what the city centre could look like. "It was priced at ÂŁ5 million, eight years ago, so it obviously now would be double that." Turn to page three
