Councillors switch on the city BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS in the city are backing a questionnaire asking the public if they would like an electric community bus. Members of the Green and Labour parties on Chichester City Council have launched a new survey after looking at other communities in Midhurst and Brighton which have community

and electric buses to supplement bus services provided by big bus companies. Cllr Sarah Sharp, Green Party councillor for Chichester South, said: “Our aim is to find out if people are interested in supporting a community bus here to serve the city and surrounding neighbourhoods. "People frequently tell me they would like small buses to serve the city centre. People often complain to me about the pollution and smell from the diesel

buses, so an electric bus seems a sensible way to go" Mayor of Chichester, Cllr Richard Plowman, said the idea was good but it would depend on the results of the survey. He said: "I am very supportive of the idea but we will have to see how much demand there is from the survey and how it fits with the other priorities for the city. "The number one priority from talking

to the people is to do something about the pavements in the city centre so that is top of the list at present. "One other similar suggestion to a community bus was a little electric town train often seen in tourist destinations to move people around the city. "We had a test back in 2006 and it worked well but funds were never forthcoming from the district council."
