Sex offender sees jail term sentence

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A FORMER teacher in Petworth has been sentenced for sexual offences against a boy he taught during the 1990s.

Jonathan O'Brien, 61, formerly of Bosham, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, May 24, having pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault during 1992 when he worked at Seaford College near Petworth, where the boy then in his mid-teens, was a pupil at the time.

He was sentenced to a total of 30 months' imprisonment, to run concurrently with a previously imposed sentence of 13 years for separate offences, not involving Seaford College.

The prosecution, authorised by the CPS, followed an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit.

Two other counts of indecent assault on the same boy, to which O'Brien pleaded not guilty, were not proceeded with by the prosecution and will lay on the court file.

Police emphasise that the school has provided full co-operation during this investigation and that the events concerned are completely unconnected with the current or recent management of the school or pupils.

PC Yvonne Daddow said: "This offending came to light when the victim contacted us for the first time in 2017.

Having courageously come forward he supported our investigation and was ready to give evidence in court if

necessary.

"It became clear that O'Brien had used an allegedly mutual interest in computers to, in effect, gradually 'groom' the boy into sexual activity, in O'Brien's study at the school and his home in Oxfordshire. The boy kept the distressing experiences to himself for more than 20 years until chance family discussion to some media coverage on the general subject of sexual offending triggered him into coming forward.

O'Brien is already serving a 13- The schoo year sentence imposed at Chichester Crown Court in May 2014 following an investigation by West Mercia Police into similar offences against boys at schools where he taught in Worcestershire and Oxfordshire between 1980 and 1989.

As a result of that 2014 sentence he is already on the Sex Offenders Register for life and will remain subject of a Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO) imposed at the same time in 2014, severely restricting his contact with any children until further court order.

Buses divert due to gas works GAS MAINS replacement work started in College Lane Chichester on Tuesday.

As a result of these works Stagecoach have confirmed it is necessary to divert service 50 to and from Graylingwell and Summersdale.

Throughout the duration of works, expected to be 21 weeks, all service 50 journeys will run via Broyle Road and Wellington Road instead of College Lane.

All bus stops along the diversion route will be observed to provide alternative stop facilities.

Bus stops in Oaklands Way and College Lane (south of the university) will not be served by service 50 while the diversion route is in place.

The works will initially start in the section of College Lane between Wellington Road and the University of Chichester, therefore U7 journeys will not immediately be affected during this first phase of works.

During the second part of phase 1, expected to start four weeks later (approximately June 24), College Lane will be closed from the university entrance to Spitalfield Lane. U7 journeys will run via Broyle Road, Wellington Road and the top end of College Lane to access the university.

The second phase of works includes Spitalfield Lane and to avoid disruption to the service 50 all journeys will continue to be diverted, maintaining punctuality.

The walk was for Dementia Action Week and involved people living with dementia who attend Sage House in Tangmere.

They joined pupils from Tangmere Primary Academy for an intergenerational walk through the school grounds to raise awareness about dementia.

The school has been a keen supporter

of the charity Dementia Support from the early days when the charity’s care facility Sage House was being built.

The pupils took part in dementia friends training to learn more about the disease and what it is like to live with dementia. They have visited Sage House several times and read to people living with dementia.

A spokesperson from the school said: "The children and staff at Tangmere Primary Academy have been thrilled to develop their partnership with Sage House since it opened in 2018.

"The children enjoy their visits to the hub where they read and talk to the clients and therefore when the

opportunity arose for us to take part in an event for Dementia Action Week the children were keen to be involved. We hope that this will be an ongoing event."

One gentleman, Terry, was pleasantly surprised with his buddy's knowledge and conversation about the RAF. Terry served in the RAF and promised to return with his old photos to show the school.

A spokesperson for the charity added: "This was a great partnership of different generations and the local community, and a great opportunity to raise awareness about dementia."

The Green Party state that it is not enough to avoid land allocations for development within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty when thousands of homes are then built around its boundaries. They say there must be recognition that it is not just the destruction of landscapes, but also the secondary effects caused by waste water and increased traffic.

Michael Neville, Green Party spokesperson for Harbour Villages Ward, stated: “The Chichester and Bognor Green Party would like to reinforce strongly the message delivered in the open letter from the Chichester Harbour Trust and Chichester Harbour Conservancy, and make a passionate case for a full review of the CDC’s local plan.

"The new composition of CDC represents a long-awaited opportunity to embrace the challenge of meeting housing needs, with a creative and energetic approach, one which ensures an outcome that satisfies social fairness and environmental protection.”

The letter also says: "The local election results clearly demonstrated the views of the electorate.

"We are therefore calling on you, as party leaders, to commit to ensuring there is a fundamental review of the local plan before moving any further forward with it. We look forward to hearing from you.

"We would very much like the opportunity of meeting with you to discuss our concerns and our thoughts on how these can be addressed and how we could work together to resolve this issue."

The Green Party says it would encourage the scheduling of a public meeting by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy and Chichester Harbour Trust, which would allow newly elected councillors to engage with the concerns raised in the open letter.

The district backs the Brexit Party in European elections

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk NEW Brexit Party MEP Robert Rowland has thanked Chichester voters for backing him.

Mr Rowland was one of four of his party's candidates elected to the European Parliament in Brussels after they swept to victory.

Over a third of the electors in the Chichester district backed The Brexit Party in a major show of support for a political group unknown much before Easter.

Mr Rowland said: "We are absolutely delighted with the level of support we have received from voters in Chichester, resulting in a historic night for The Brexit Party.

"To have four candidates elected with over 900,000 votes in the south east is fantastic, especially considering the party has been operating for less than two months. Voters have had enough of the Westminster elite trying to delay, disappoint and derail Brexit.

"We want to put trust back at the heart of our democracy.

"We will stand up for hard-working ordinary Brits and will do everything we can to make sure that the UK is prepared to leave with a clean-break Brexit by the latest deadline of October 31."

Chichester district residents took to the poling stations last Thursday for the second time this month, this time to vote for the Members of the European

Parliament (MEPs) in the European Parliamentary elections.

A huge 41.2 per cent turnout saw The Brexit Party receive 13,897 votes compared to just 4,320 for the Conservative and Unionist Party.

The Liberal Democrats came second in the vote with 10,144 votes and the Green Party next with 5,187.

Change UK - The Independent Group received 1,427 votes, Labour Party 1,147 and then the UK Independence Party (UKIP) had 782 votes.

The UK European Union Party (UKEUP) had 89 votes, Socialist Party Of Great Britain received 38, Jason Mcmahon 55, David Round 41 and Michael Turberville received 21 votes.

The dominant showing helped to give The Brexit Party four MEPs in the southeast. The Lib Dems have three MEPs, with one each for the Greens, Labour and Conservatives.

Across the UK, the final tally of MEPs was 29 for The Brexit Party, 16 Lib Dems, 10 Labour, seven Greens, and four Conservatives with smaller numbers for the likes of the SNP and DUP. A statement by the People's Vote campaign said the 40 per cent overall backing of the five pro-People's Vote parties outweighed the 35 per cent for the two in favour of no deal.

European Movement spokesman John Wilton said: “We were delighted so many turned out to help us today and that, after people had voted in the EU elections and before the results were known, so many were very positive that we needed to stay in the EU for the future prosperity and security of our country.

"Many people were surprised that so many others locally shared their views on this and quite a few wanted to take a picture of the Brexitometer results to share with their family and friends. We will continue the campaign on a nonparty political basis for our membership of the European Union to continue.”

City school's cricket pavilion is completely destroyed by arsonists POLICE are seeking witnesses to a fire at a cricket pavilion in Chichester.

Shortly after 9pm on Bank Holiday Monday (May 27) the fire service was called to the cricket pavilion at Prebendal School playing fields in Avenue de Chartres, Chichester, where a fire had broken out.

Nobody was in the building at the time.

Damage was extensive, the building is completely unusable and the fire is being treated as arson.

Detective Constable Ellie Hughes said; "If you were in the area on Monday evening and saw anything suspicious, please contact us online (link to be added) or give us a call on 101, quoting serial 1466 of 27/05.

"We'd particularly like to talk to a group of youths who were seen

running away across the playing fields as the fire service arrived."

Just last month, Chichester’s Fire Station manager asked members of the public to be vigilant after a series of deliberate fires around the city centre had occurred and asked the perpetrators to stop.

Speaking in April, Pete Sadler, Chichester Fire Station manager, said: “We are concerned by the number of suspected arson incidents we have experienced in Chichester and urge those responsible to stop.

“Fires started deliberately can be particularly dangerous because they generally develop much faster.

Fires started in bins can spread to properties or vehicles nearby and put people’s lives, homes and businesses at risk.”

Independent shop develops success and wins top award

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN INDEPENDENT store in the city centre has been crowned as Best Performing Retailer of the Year.

Mark and Diane Smith, owners of Whitbys Photo-Imaging Centre in Chichester attended FujiFilm's Photo Print Services annual conference in Birmingham and were awarded Best Performing Retailer of the Year.

Although Whitbys moved to Baffin's Lane four years ago, the store has been trading in Chichester for 37 years.

Mark says trading off the high street has been challenging at times so this was a massive achievement for the family run independent store.

Mark said: "I think the reason we got the award is because we have a very good relationship with our customers.

Unlike some of the bigger stores, an independent is able to change quicker to something which is trending.

"Our biggest reason for being successful is that we love helping people and having the personal touch."

Although Mark has worked for Whitbys for 30 years, Diane and he have only owned the store for two and a half years so to achieve national recognition so soon is testament to all the hard work they have put in to make Whitbys a success.

Diane said: "People value really good

service these days and that is what you have to provide to stand out from the crowd.

"Anybody can offer rock bottom prices but you can't put a price on good service."

Despite advances in technology for photographs, Mark says it has probably helped their business. The public would previously come to the shop with a film to be developed and have to print all the photos on that film.

He said: "People do print less but they print the ones they want so they end up

printing more. We make it so easy for people where they can bring their phone in and use the machine to select the photos and crop them, so they probably end up printing more."

The shop which was located previously in Saddlers Walk in East Street is now in Baffins Court near the Corn Exchange.

Mark said he would love to be back on the main shopping streets but with high rental costs it is not something they can afford to do.

"It's great when people walk down the lanes and nooks and crannies and

come across shops like ours. With the challenges of the high street, I think it's great we have been recognised. I certainly nearly fell off my chair when the name was read out." said Mark.

Diane added: "It's a real honour.

We took over the business when the previous owner retired. To get the recognition and know we are doing it well is brilliant."

Planetarium sees an astronomical quarter of a million visitors so far THE SOUTH Downs Planetarium welcomed its 250,000th visitor on Bank Holiday Monday.

The visitor was in fact a group - the Carpenter family consisting of twin boys George and James (aged nine), father Nic and grandmother Sandra.

The family comes from Shermanbury in Horsham and the two boys had been to the Planetarium before with Jolesfield C of E Primary School. Nic and grandmother, Sandra had never been visited before.

Dr John Mason, who is the South Down Planetarium’s principal lecturer and founding trustee said it was incredible achievement for a volunteer run organisation.

He said: "When the Planetarium opened in July 2001, I don’t think in our wildest dreams that we could have foreseen just how successful the Planetarium would turn out to be.

"To reach the milestone of our 250,000th visitor is truly remarkable – all the more so for an organisation that is run by a team of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers.”

Dr Mason has been interested in astronomy

since he was very young, buying his first pair of binoculars for £8 at age ten from a shop called Allan's in South Street, Chichester.

He recalls that he worked hard to save his money to buy the binoculars which were from the Second World War. "When I first started, I had a red torch, a star map and a notebook and I learnt my way around the sky and teaching myself new constellations.

Patrick Moore told me not to get a telescope first, go out and get a good pair of binoculars, and that's what I did," he said.

"I was about 14 when I got my first telescope.

I bought the mirror and optics and my father made the mount and the telescope.

"My sister bought me my first astronomy book - the 1962 edition of Patrick Moore's Observers Book of Astronomy and it cost half a crown.

"The twin boys in the Carpenter family are an example of the young people that the Planetarium was set up to inspire and encourage.

They are the engineers, scientists and astronauts of the future."

Expansion on carers project

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN INITIATIVE to support young carers in the district is being expanded at Chichester Cathedral this summer.

The Young Carers Project aims to give those involved practical skills and support for daily life, the chance to discover new talents and boost their confidence, as well as to enjoy activities with other young people in the area. It is part of the Cathedral’s wider support of families in the city and across the diocese of Chichester.

The Cathedral has secured new funding from Chichester in Partnership which brings together organisations from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors to coordinate work for the benefit of the local area.

This additional funding will allow the expansion of the existing project, now open to young carers aged 11-25, to provide several cooking sessions as well as a range of creative activities throughout the year.

The Young Adult Carers Group will also have the opportunity to become part of the Cathedral’s Young Ambassadors for Social Action (YASA) initiative. Open to all 16-25 year olds, YASA promotes engagement with local and worldwide issues in order to raise awareness and make a positive contribution to change, while providing opportunities to discover new skills and talents.

In addition, the older Group will meet once a month in Chichester City Centre Youth Drop-In in the Bell Tower, offering a chance to relax and socialise in a comfortable and informal meeting space.

The Dean of Chichester, The Very Reverend Stephen Waine is delighted that the Young Carers Project can be expanded.

He said: “Involving and promoting inclusivity with young people is central to the Cathedral’s learning and engagement activities across the diocese.

Cycle ride by hospital staff helps towards endometriosis funding A CONSULTANT gynaecologist from St Richard's Hospital has cycled 220 miles from London to Newport to raise funds for Endometriosis UK. The cycle ride, took place on Saturday, May 18, taking the team of 11 endometriosis surgeons and specialists, including Natasha Waters from the Chichester hospital through some of the UK’s top landmarks, including Stonehenge, Winchester Cathedral and Cardiff Bay, as well as visiting seven endometriosis specialist centres.

Endometriosis affects one in ten women from puberty to menopause, although the impact can be felt for life. The surgeons and specialists have seen first-hand the devastating impact the condition can have on women’s lives, and want the cycle ride to raise awareness of the condition and the pressing need for more research.

Endometriosis takes an average of seven and a half years to diagnose, and the cyclists believe that more needs to be done in the area of research and education to drive this statistic down.

Last year, the cyclists raised over £15,000 for Endometriosis UK and they’re hoping to top that this year.

The cyclists set off on their ride at 7.30am from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London and finished at Celtic Manor in Newport the following day, where the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) Annual Conference took place.

` Selsey man A MAN has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Selsey.

The incident is reported to have occurred in an alleyway between Manor Road and Manor Lane around 8.20am on Wednesday, May 29.

A 20-year-old man of no fixed address handed himself into custody on Wednesday evening and was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. He remains in police custody at this stage.

Police have increased patrols in the area and are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the isolated incident.

Uncovering the past with annual archaeological dig

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE FASCINATING discoveries have been found hidden deep below the ground in Priory Park.

Two years ago a private Roman bath house, belonging to the richest Romans in Chichester, was unearthed and described as “a once in a life time opportunity for local archaeological volunteers to uncover a find like this”.

Last year, the most significant find was part of a large hot bath which would have been large enough to contain up to four people. The bathhouse is of great national importance because it is so unusual to find the remains of Roman buildings that have survived in such a good condition in a built-up area.

This year Chichester District Council’s own archaeologist, James Kenny, with volunteers from the Chichester and District Archaeology Society, returned to Priory Park looking to uncover more of the park’s Roman secrets.

The revelation for this year's dig was that the house was a lot older than predicted as it was made of a timber construction.

Despite some wet weather James was optimistic, saying: "We pray for the rain, it softens the ground.

"We have found the plan of a Roman room, about 5 metres square. The

footings of the walls are constructed out of small nodules of flint just rammed in to a rectangular trench. There is no evidence of masonry structure and that depth of footing would not have supported the weight of a masonry building so we are almost certainly dealing with a timber frame.

"It is not what we were expecting.

Timber framed buildings are not unheard of from the Romans and there is no particular reason why you can't make a very magnificent building with timber frame and it may be indicate it was made earlier in the Roman period.

"The bath house, of course, is all masonry but then it would have had an awful lot of fire within it.

"We are below the floor level but we have found indications there was a mosaic floor

here which was probably destroyed when the land was used for agricultural use."

Another interesting find in the trench were two medieval cesspits. These are nothing to do with the Roman site but quite likely to do with the Guildhall. The archaeologists also found some pots in the same area dating from around the 13th or 14th Century AD. A special item which was found was a Roman woman's hair pin made from animal bone in remarkable condition, pictured below.

Roman around the city with special events for a week-long celebration

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to the city over the half-term week have been delving back in history to the Roman era with the awardwinning annual week.

Roman Week which is hosted by The Novium Museum and Chichester District Council is back for its fourth year and recently the event was highly commended in the category of limited budget project of the year at the prestigious Museums & Heritage Awards.

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Roman Week 2019 was packed with lots of events across the city and surrounding areas.

The exciting programme offered something for everyone to enjoy, including a spectacular Roman reenactment in Priory Park, Chichester, on Tuesday.

This showstopper event included military and gladiator shows and brought the Roman period to life, giving visitors the chance to find out how Roman soldiers and civilians fought and lived during this fascinating period of British history.

Other events on offer during this year’s Roman Week included talks, walks, guided tours, family activities and workshops.

Visitors could also immerse themselves

in their Roman heritage through the eye of a lens at The Novium Museum’s blockbuster exhibition, Hollywood Rome: Reel Life in the Ancient World.

This visually stunning exhibition runs until September 8 and features costumes, props and posters from big name modern Roman epics, such as Gladiator, Centurion, and Ben Hur. Learning officer, Amanda Rogan from The Novium Museum said: "The planning for Roman Week starts pretty much after one finishes and we look at the successes of the year before and listen to feedback which people give us at the events and think about what new things we can try.

"This year we had some funding from the Arts Council so it meant we could do bigger and better things than we have tried in previous years.

"It's gone really well and the reenactment is kind of our show stopper of the week. It really brings people out and sees the work which the museum does.

We make sure there is something for everyone, little people, families, adults, visitors and residents."

On Wednesday afternoon Chichester Library hosted storytelling workshops around the myths of Neptune and Minerva with Charlie Essex and Ella Bassett from the Chichester Festival Theatre using props and costumes from CFT’s archive Charlie said: "The workshop is for children and their families, to get

everyone involved.

"We used participants from the audience to dress up to tell the stories and using props from our archive.

"We used arts and crafts materials in groups, they will come up with their own take on the story and feed it back."

Fishbourne Roman Palace offered visitors the chance to explore the site with a Roman trail, design mosaics and play some Roman games, dress in Roman costume and handle original Roman artefacts.

Cllr Roy Briscoe, cabinet member for community services and culture at Chichester District Council, said: "We have worked really hard to make Roman Week 2019 the best yet. This year, more than 35 events and activities have been organised by a wide range of organisations for all ages in Chichester and beyond.

"Over 2,000 people visited Priory Park to experience the Roman re-enactment and to watch archaeologists uncover the Roman secrets in the park. During the day we spoke to people who had visited from London and beyond specifically to attend Roman Week.

"It was great to see so many families also taking the opportunity to picnic in the park and make the most of spending the day in the city. Chichester is renowned for its Roman history and we are very proud that Roman Week has become a much loved celebration in our annual calendar."

Food and racing at Goodwood

Over 23,000 racegoers enjoyed three days of culinary delights and racing thrills at Goodwood Racecourse, when the Sussex track hosted its May Festival from May 23-25.

Guests enjoyed some inspiring demonstrations from Matt Gillan, Jane Devonshire, and Sarah Jayne Stanes, while chefs from Goodwood House, Farmer, Butcher, Chef, and Goodwood Academy showcased their flourishing talent.

A culinary crescendo was met when top jockeys stole the show with Jamie Spencer, Andrea Atzeni, Hollie Doyle, and Brighton based Jason Watson, swapping the saddle for saucepans.

The three-minute Jockeys Omelette Challenge, judged by Goodwood Hotel Head Chef, Mark Foreman, saw Jamie Spencer and Jason Watson crowned champions.

As racegoers basked in the sun on Thursday, it was Frankie Dettori’s victory aboard Terebellum in the British European Breeders Fund Maiden Fillies' Stakes which crowned his 200th career success at the Sussex track. The milestone comes 32 years after he rode Lizzy Hare to victory, a man for the big stage, some 70 of those 200 triumphs have come during Glorious week down the decades.

The feature Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes went the way of Aloe Vera for Harry Bentley, having travelled beautifully throughout she went away readily at the

line to beat favourite Shambolic. Winning trainer Ralph Beckett commented; “I was not expecting that; she’s from a very good family and it looks like we have something nice on our hands.”

Friday saw the highly touted Private Secretary land the feature Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat Stakes for John Gosden. Unbeaten in three starts this season he looked like a horse going places, Frankie Dettori commented; “He’s maturing all the time, and will stay further, he showed a good turn of foot to win.”

Middleham trainer, Mark Johnson, had a successful few days with three winners, Lake Volta put up an impressive

performance in the Thames Materials Handicap, with the aim now being to come back for the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Elarqam, bounced back to form on Saturday with a win in the Betfair sponsored Listed Festival Stakes, while later in the card, Kings Advice showed a plucky performance to make all in the Betfair Exchange Handicap Stakes.

Uni helps homeless with degrees

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PROJECT at the University of Chichester is transforming the lives of homeless people by empowering them with the confidence and skills to apply for degree courses.

The pioneering initiative, which is the first of its kind in the UK, helps students without necessary qualifications to learn new skills and bridge the gap to higher education.

There are now more than 320,000 homeless people in Britain, according to Shelter, with those living on the streets twice as likely to develop mental health conditions.

Among the university cohort is Lucy D who started living sleeping rough at just 12 years of age before falling into addiction.

Now, at the age of 30, she is about to start a fine art degree.

Speaking about the university project she said: “It gives us the confidence to start a degree. We cover subjects from critical thinking, different learning styles, referencing and essay writing, to gain the tools to move forward to university.”

Lucy is one of ten students, all homeless and mostly recovering from addiction, who have applied to university after enrolling on the tenweek course at Chichester, led by its institute of education, health, and social sciences.

The course has been created in collaboration with West Sussex homeless charities Stonepillow and the Bognor Housing Trust to develop and assess academic skills to ensure students are ready for the first year of study.

The module, which has been backed by the Office for Students, utilises the students’ lived experiences to develop academic reading, writing and research

skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-belief.

Honest and insightful links are made between themes like emotional intelligence, reflective practice, decision-making skills, critical thinking – and past, often painful, experiences.

Senior lecturer Becky Edwards, from the University of Chichester’s department of childhood, social work, and social care, developed the project to help reduce barriers to higher education.

"Being intelligent and being educated are not synonymous,” she said. Some of the most intelligent people in the UK are living in poverty, both economically and aspirationally.

“They’ve not been privileged enough, lucky enough, or supported enough to access good education. Going to university is simply something they’d never have considered - this gives us the chance to change that.”

Latest figures by charity Crisis show homelessness has increased by 60 per cent since 2012, creating a modern-day diaspora with no clear pathway back into society.

For this vulnerable group, with complex needs ever exacerbated by barriers to basic services like housing, health, employment, and benefits, attending university is low on the list of aspirations and fraught with extra challenges.

Student Mike T lived on the streets of Bognor Regis for more three months after losing a job he had for ten years.

The 31-year-old, who is now a resident at Stonepillow, will start a full-time degree in English and creative writing in 2020.

Chance to question police commissioner RESIDENTS are being given the chance to question the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner at a meeting next month.

Sussex Police’s policy on dog units, speeding and illegal hunting are just some of the issues Katy Bourne has answered in the past.

Written questions should be submitted by noon on Friday, June 14.

The commissioner will then respond during the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on Friday, June 28.

Councillor Bill Bentley, chairman of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, said: “We welcome as many questions as possible from members of the public.

“The role of the panel is to scrutinise

the work of the Commissioner and we want to make sure the issues we raise are relevant to Sussex residents.”

Questions can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex, but not operational matters or live cases.

The main items on the agenda include the Police and Crime Commissioner’s annual report, harassment and stalking and the Early Intervention Youth Fund.

Concerns for kids over timescales SOME 500 children with special needs in West Sussex are waiting too long to receive the help they need at school.

There are around 5,000 children in the county with education, health and care plans (EHCP), which detail their needs and what should be done to meet them.

While the vast majority are dealt with within the required time limits, ten per cent are not, affecting 500 youngsters with conditions such as autism.

The matter was discussed at a County Hall meeting, in Chichester, where Paul Wagstaff, director of education and skills, explained what was happening.

Mr Wagstaff said the council had 16 weeks to complete EHCP reviews and 20 weeks for new assessments and that the 90 per cent completion was in line with the national rate.

Adding that the West Sussex figures had been improving for two years, he said: “Sometimes it is quite difficult to get all children through in that period of time because sometimes the cases are quite complex, additional information’s required and it’s not necessarily available immediately.

“Sometimes the liaison and discussion with parents takes longer than anticipated if the parents don’t want the provision identified in the EHCP. “So what we’re needing to do is actually try and work with those more complex cases to reduce those times.”

The committee had been discussing the council’s recent ‘inadequate’ children’s services report from Ofsted.

Chairman Michael Cloake said: “You’ve got 500 cases of children that are not getting the services they require in their schools in that timescale.

“What do we need to do as a council and as a committee to meet those 500 children within timescales that have been set nationally.

“I appreciate there are concerns and difficulties and challenges getting information but Ofsted don’t care, the child doesn’t care.

“How do we as a council meet those targets?”

Mr Wagstaff said the work was already being done and that his team hoped to hit the 95 per cent plus mark this year.

He pointed out that some things were beyond the authority’s control, such as when a parent wanted to explore all options for their child before making a decision about a school.

While determined not to cut corners to reach the targets, Mr Wagstaff added: “What we are doing is actively engaging on the ground with those parents to make sure that actually we can try and accelerate that process of decision making.

“Once those decisions are made, the process of completing is fairly swift.”

` Bogus calls

POLICE are reminding Sussex residents, especially the elderly, to stay on the alert for bogus phone calls and visitors after 35 cases of 'courier fraud' or attempts so far in May including six on one day.

But thanks to alert residents and bank staff, only six attempts succeeded.

In several of the cases residents have received phone calls from someone purporting to be a 'Detective Chief Inspector Richard Harrison'. There is no such officer.

The caller alleges that there has been unauthorised use of a debit or credit card, that someone has been arrested, and that there is an investigation ongoing.

The caller says that the resident must either supply their PIN and other card details over the phone, and hand the card or cards to a courier who would arrive at the door.

However thanks to the alertness of residents, and in six cases thanks to the alertness of bank staff , only six of the 35 attempts were successful, with a total loss of £24,800 - the biggest single loss was £7,900. The oldest victim was 96 years old.

Around 18 of these were in West Sussex and the bank staff interventions saved losses totalling £63,500. Local officers have responded to every report and have been providing support, including advice and assistance on prevention measures.

Trust's events WAYS in which volunteers help the Aldingbourne Trust will be outlined at two events next week.

The trust is hosting a pair of drop-in sessions on Monday to enable people to find out more about the trust's work with people with learning disabilities and how they can support it.

The first of the events will take place from 10am-midday at the Aldingbourne Country Centre. This will be followed at 2pm-4pm at the trust's shop at 73 Aldwick Road in Bognor Regis.

A trust spokesman said: "We are very fortunate to have over 201 volunteers throughout all our enterprises within the trust.

"Every single volunteer makes a difference to the people we support from volunteers in our charity shop, being part of our adopt a statin project

and the country centre.

"Volunteering for the trust is a truly rewarding experience as well as a fantastic way to learn new skills, meet new people and get involved in your local community.

"We have a variety of volunteering opportunities across all of our project, so we are sure to have something to suit everyone."

The trust also has regular support from corporate volunteers from organisations such as Southern Water, Mercer and The Kitchen Store.

"They have helped us by clearing our greenhouses, painting and decorating our new children's tractor play area and general maintenance tasks around the country centre, which has helped us save over 1,352 hours a week," added the spokesman.

f Single-use plastic use will be audited by the county council

Plastic waste A PLAN to eliminate single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic waste has been launched by West Sussex County Council.

The council will carry out a full audit of all the plastic it uses across its buildings and set targets for reduction as part of a Plastics Action Plan published on Tuesday, May 28.

The council has made a commitment to find alternatives to plastic wherever possible and to use recycled plastic when it isn’t. The council will also ensure that where possible, plastic items they do use can be reused or recycled.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “The environmental impact of single-use plastics is undeniable and thanks to programmes such as Blue Planet we have seen a growing movement to reduce our reliance on plastics and seek alternatives.

“We are recycling more than ever – with 7,000 tonnes of plastic sent to be recycled in West Sussex last year. However, many single-use plastic items can’t be recycled or are simply thrown away.

“We want to lead by example and ensure we are working towards eliminating single-use and unnecessary plastics wherever possible for our staff, residents, and businesses.”

The publication of the Plastics Action Plan comes as the county council is about to launch a major new campaign to encourage people to pledge their support to reduce the impact of climate change. The West Sussex Climate Pledge will launch on World Environment Day on June 5.

Part of the West Sussex Climate Pledge campaign will involve encouraging people to #PassOnPlastic.

The county council is already supporting the national Refill campaign to encourage people to use a reusable bottle and fill up with tap water. There are four publically accessible Refill points in county council buildings.

The county council has also taken steps to improve recycling for staff, and has replaced plastic cutlery and takeaway containers in its main canteen with items made from wood, metal, paper or card.

Helping roles to be highlighted A FIRST volunteering showcase of its kind is to be held in the grounds of Chichester Cathedral.

Voluntary Arun & Chichester (VAAC) is holding its volunteer fair in the open air at the landmark setting for the first time.

The event will take place from 11am3pm next Friday and will be attended by 30 voluntary and community groups from the area.

Jenny Holmes, the senior admin and communications worker at VAAC, said: "VAAC and Chichester Cathedral are excited to invite everyone to this unique celebration and showcase of local volunteering in the beautiful setting of the cathedral grounds.

Staging the occasion is part of VAAC's role in promoting and supporting voluntary and community groups and providing a voice for the sector across the district.

The week, running from June 10 – 16, focuses on ‘Getting Carers Connected’ and encourages local communities to support family and friend carers.

Over 40 events are taking place across West Sussex for people who are caring for a member of their family or a friend, which includes information stands to provide help and guidance at St Richards Hospital, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester PO19 6SE One service that is benefiting carers

across the county is the Carers Health Team. The team aim to ensure that hard pressed carers feel less isolated and are able to manage their own health and emotional wellbeing.

“It is vital that family and friend carers remember that they too are entitled to look after their own health and wellbeing and that their health matters”, said Wilma Thomas, Carers Health Team service lead.

“Our carer health clinicians can work in partnership with carers to provide personalised one to one advice and information and our team are able to visit carers at home and check their general state of health and wellbeing.

Amanda Jupp, county council cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Carers make a vital contribution to our communities and I would really encourage anyone who may find

themselves supporting others to make sure they are in touch with our local services to get the best possible information and advice. "It’s also important that people look after their own health needs as well as those of their loved ones. It is often too easy for people to ignore their own health as they focus more and more on those they care for."

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK

From Women At War to a Rocketman May 31 - June 6

It's going to be a long, long time before a rock biopic manages to capture the highs and lows of an artist's life like Rocketman. Rock biopics, such as the recent Bohemian Rhapsody, are inter-generational manna from music heaven and Rocketman—the story of shy Reginald Dwight from North London, who would become showman and songman extraordinaire Elton John—is another fine exemplar of the genre.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton as the spangled one himself, Rocketman is magnificent and ridiculous, a feathered melange of clichés and originality, of respectful homage and unrepentant nostalgia. Sometimes it’s comfortingly conventional; other times it’s gloriously off the charts. Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) stars as lyricist Bernie Taupin and Richard Madden (The Bodyguard) as Elton’s manager.

Iceland’s film industry sets the bar high too with two films. Women at War winningly charts the battle middle-aged woman, Halla, who takes on the aluminium industry to prevent it disfiguring her country. The film’s strong impact will linger long after the credits roll as will Arctic, Mads Mikkelsen playing a cargo pilot whose small plane crashes somewhere in the Arctic, the survival thriller ramped up further by an injured woman, part of the rescue party, and whose needs are even greater than his.

Madeline’s Madeline, an invigorating original, follows a teenage girl with previous mental health issues who finds an empowering new pathway in the world of improv theatre, but has to navigate between an over-protective mum (Miranda July) and a director with her own agenda. Madeline is played with a knockout blend of charisma and vulnerability by star-in-the-making Helena Howard.

This week’s £2 Ruby Tuesday Film is The Bookshop. In 1950s Britain, Florence Green (Emily Mortimer), a widow, moves to a small English village, buys an old house that had stood empty for years with the intention to open a bookshop. But there’s opposition, Florence’s choice of bookshop is the very old house that a powerful local aristocrat Violet Gamat (Patricia Clarkson) had her eye on, planning to turn the building that everyone in town calls ‘the old house’ into an arts centre. Also starring Bill Nighy.

Performance events this week are diverse and rich: Van Gogh and Japan, Exhibition on Screen, by the maestro of art film-makers, Phil Grabsky, who explores the love of Japanese art had on the artist, the film visiting Japan, France and the Netherlands (4 June). Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi Screened at Picturedrome Cinemas GARETH Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot reminded audiences why the titular creature is often considered to be one of cinema’s greatest monsters. A good thing, too, as he’s needed once again – this time teaming up with the cryptozoological agency Monarch to do battle against a smattering of god-sized creatures. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters marks the third entry in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, a shared cinematic universe that has been slowly building towards an epic clash between the roaring reptile and King Kong as depicted in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.

For the time being, however, Godzilla will have to contend with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah if he’s to make it that far. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance. Returning characters from the previous Godzilla include Sally Hawkins as Dr Vivienne Graham and Ken Watanabe as Dr Ishiro Serizawa, who are now joined by The Conjuring’s Vera Farmiga and Straight Outta Compton’s O’Shea Jackson Jr. as members of Monarch as well as Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as a child caught up in the conflict. Will they make it to the Kong vs Godzilla match of the champions, however? They’ll need to survive through King Of The Monsters first.

Peter James' The House On Cold Hill Monday June 3-Saturday June 8 AN EXTRA matinee has been added for the world premiere production of the spinechilling stage play The House on Cold Hill, adapted from the best-selling 2015 novel of multi-million selling author Peter James.

Overwhelming demand for tickets for the touring production at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre led to adding a performance next Friday.

Based on the author’s own experience in a haunted house, the play will star BAFTAnominated actor and winner of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing, Joe McFadden as Ollie Harcourt and joining him, as his wife Caro Harcourt, will be award winning actors Rita Simons, Charlie Clements, as Chris, and Persephone Swales-Dawson, as Jade.

McFadden is perhaps best known for playing series regular Raf di Lucca in BBC1’s Holby City from 2014 - 2017, and as PC Joe Mason in Heartbeat from 2010 - 2014. He partnered Katya Jones in BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing and captured the nation's hearts, eventually winning the series to become the 2017 champion.

Simons played Roxy Mitchell in BBC's EastEnders from 2007-17, and is one of Britain’s best loved TV actresses. Clements was also in the soap from 2006-2010, winning several awards for his performance as Bradley Manning, while Swales-Dawson played serial killer Nico Blake in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks from 2014-16.

EACH year, Pevonia UK presents awards to Spas, Salons and Therapists in six different categories.

The businesses are judged on sales, performance, marketing strategy and activity, training, staffing, creativity, inventiveness and overall success, as well as the results of their customer nominations.

Voting opened on 1st February 2019 and was available for three months.

Over one thousand public votes were received ahead of a meeting, by the panel of judges who had the tricky task of selecting winners in every category.

Winners and runners-up in the ‘Pevonia UK Awards 2018’ were announced on 14 May 2019.

Jane Norman, PR and Marketing Manager for Pevonia UK said “The meeting sees a good deal of deliberation, but the judges look forward to reading the comments put forward by clients of each business. It is wonderful that so many people take the time and effort to vote for their favourites.”

The much-coveted Salon of the Year Award saw joint winners this year, with Chichester-based, Jane Bulbeck, Specialists in skincare & beauty, sharing the title with last year’s winner - Senses of Siam, in Tamworth.

The judges deliberated long and hard over all awards, but this one was the hardest. With two salons demonstrating excellence, they were both crowned ‘winners’.

During the judges’ meeting, comments from the public were discussed. For Jane Bulbeck, Specialists in skincare & beauty, they included: “Very relaxing atmosphere and the

staff are the best ever.”

NEWS ENRICHMENT is a hot topic here at Mount Noddy. It is an essential part of meeting the welfare needs of the dogs and cats in our care. Not only for dogs and cats in our care, but EVERY domesticated pet. So what is enrichment?

Enrichment is something we add to an animal's environment which helps to improve their physical or mental well being.

Here at Mount Noddy we try to give our animals as much enrichment as possible to help keep them happy and healthy during their stay with us. Here are some examples of the daily enrichment our dogs and cats have at the centre: • Daily walks to explore new sights, sounds and smells • Scent games and clicker training to keep busy minds occupied • Social interactions, both human and canine when possible • Food games using food or treat toys such as a KONG®, puzzle feeders or lick mats • Sensory stimulation including: - Sound, such as classical music or other calming music - Smells such as lavender and spices (always make sure the ones you are using are safe for your pet – some essential oils can be harmful).

- Textures, such as the feel of a brush against the skin, soft bedding, and toys to nose around the play yard.

• Kongs are great boredom busters. Fill them with something tasty and your dog will love working out how to eat it from the Kong. Fillings don’t always need to be treat based. There all lots of healthier options like chicken and veg. Foodie dogs can have their usual biscuits served in a Kong to make dinner times more fun.

• Paper bags and boxes: our cats love to hide in boxes and paper bags! You can make it more fun by hiding a catnip toy inside too!

How creative can you be?

THE HOME of Rolls-Royce played host to a spectacular evening of music and conversation, in support of the Chichester Cathedral Roof Restoration Appeal.

Attended by 150 patrons and supporters, the exclusive, ticket-only event began with Champagne and canapés, followed by an interview with Rachel Portman, one of Britain’s most celebrated and prolific composers of film music. Interviewed by Julian Biggs, Chichester Cathedral trustee, Rachel gave guests a fascinating insight into her life, work and inspiration, and the extraordinary challenges and rewards of a vital but often overlooked aspect of moviemaking. A highlight of the evening was a live performance of Rachel’s choral work from the Chichester Cathedral Choir, under Organist and Master of the Choristers,

Charles Harrison.

The evening concluded with a silent auction: continuing the Hollywood theme, participants submitted their donations in gold envelopes mimicking those used at the Oscars ceremony. Rolls-Royce supported the fundraising efforts by donating a unique lot, with the highest bidder securing a chauffeured Phantom ride and VIP tour of the home of Rolls-Royce.

Andrew Ball, head of corporate relations, RollsRoyce Motor Cars, said: “Chichester is our ‘local’ cathedral and a familiar landmark for everyone who works at the Home of RollsRoyce, so we were delighted to have this opportunity to support the Roof Appeal.

Chichester Cathedral represents the apex of art, design, technology and craft of its age."

CHICHESTER Ship Canal Trust joined MPs, members of the House of Lords and members of waterway restoration groups nationwide at a Parliamentary reception, hosted by the Inland Waterways Association (IWA).

The annual event was held at the Houses of Parliament, and Mark Stoneham, trustee, represented the Canal. He said: "Unfortunately I wasn’t able to help out with Brexit, but I did manage to meet many waterways colleagues from across the country, and it was fascinating to see the size of some of the projects undertaken."

Activities supported by the IWA, of which Chichester Canal is a member, fall broadly into four categories: regeneration, personal development / wellbeing, creating community spaces and enhancing heritage

and habitats.

Mark continued: "While our regeneration need is not significant compared to work in inner cities, it is clear Chichester Ship Canal Trust is doing great work in the other three areas. It’s a reminder to us to highlight the work we’re doing, and plan to do, to key decision makers and our elected representatives."

From the speakers at the reception, Mark took away a few lessons, which he’s brought back to the Canal with him. First, that the job is never finished. Secondly, do it a bit at a time. Thirdly, and most importantly, always appreciate the great support from volunteers, without whom nothing would be possible.

With a team of over 140 volunteers, Chichester Canal appreciates they make everything possible.

THE CHICHESTER office of Irwin Mitchell nominated Dementia Support in Tangmere to be their charity of the year.

Colleagues at the law firm handed over the cheque for £11,000 at an event along with free ice cream from a vintage van outside their town centre based office. On top of their fundraising, which included proceeds from bake sales and dress down days, colleagues also knitted ‘twiddlemuffs’ to help occupy the sometimes restless hands dementia patients can experience.

Dementia Support provides assistance to those living with the disease and supports families and carers in the local area.

The relationship between Irwin Mitchell and the charity has deepened over the last three years, with experts at the law firm providing free advice clinics at the charity’s dementia hub – Sage House, twice a month for people enquiring about the legal issues surrounding dementia.

Fundraising for Dementia Support is all part of work undertaken by the Irwin Mitchell Charities Foundation (IMCF), an independent charity founded in 1997. Thanks to last year’s efforts the IMCF has now donated more than £2m to charities in the UK and abroad. The annual charity initiative sees staff across 13 of the firm’s offices vote to select a good cause, which they can support through both voluntary work and fundraising events.

Paula James, regional managing partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Chichester office, said: “As a firm we have always been passionate about doing what we can to support important causes and organisations through the IMCF and the Charity of the Year initiative. Dementia Support undertakes incredibly important work and we are very proud to be continuing our partnership with the charity for a third year.

“Helping good causes is a core part of life here at Irwin Mitchell and we are excited about seeing just how much we can do for Dementia Support and our other chosen charities across the coming months.”

Sally Tabbner, chief executive at Dementia Support, said: “We are beyond thrilled to once again be named the charity of the year for Irwin Mitchell’s Chichester office. We are delighted to have such a strong relationship with the team and their support in recent years has been invaluable as we have looked to improve and develop our services. ABBY Newell from the Creation Station held a charity event at Boston Tea Party, giving parents and carers an opportunity to create a beautiful 'Flying themed' canvas with their children’s footprints.

All profits were donated from the event to the charity Caudwell Children, who are supporting children with autism and their families.

This event was held during Children’s Activity Week; a national celebration of clubs, classes and activities organised by the Children’s Activity Association, a not-for-profit, industry-led independent organisation to raise standards in all organised children’s activities.

As well as the event, Abby ran Watch me Fly themed classes all week and gave parents an opportunity to win a craft hamper, adding all raffle ticket sales to the total raised for the charity.

Chichester District’s role in D-Day - Part one

Due to its proximity to occupied France, Sussex played a prominent part in the build-up of the D-Day operations. This article and next week’s article will focus on some of the crucial roles that Chichester and its immediate surroundings played in the run up to and during D-Day. It was in early 1943, over a year before D-Day took place that Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Morgan was chosen as Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander (COSSAC). Morgan was tasked with leading the Anglo-American planning staff who were responsible for drawing up the main outline of Operation Overlord (the code name for the Battle of Normandy).

His first report stated: "An operation of this magnitude has never previously been attempted in history. It is fraught with hazards, both in the nature and magnitude, which do not obtain in any other theatre of the present world war. Unless these hazards are squarely faced and adequately overcome, the operation cannot succeed. There is no reason why they should not be overcome, provided the energies of all concerned are bent to the problem."

In the lead up to D-Day the whole of Sussex was inundated with allied troops, equipment and vehicles, preparing for Operation Overlord. Operation Overlord began with Operation Neptune, the code name for the Normandy landings more commonly known as D-Day. In Chichester District multiple sites were used by the military including Lodsworth, Singleton, Funtington, Boxgrove, Cowdray Park, Petworth, Westbourne and many more.

Military authorities relied on the generosity

of landowners and contributions of major landowning estates in the county to undertake the required preparations for D-Day. The problem of finding suitable accommodation and training areas for the huge numbers of incoming troops was a major concern for planners.

Petworth Park was home to three camps with a total capacity of over 3,500 men and several hundred vehicles. Based at Petworth were the 27th Armoured Brigade who were specially trained for beach operations.

Their equipment included the highly secret amphibious D-Day Sherman Tank, a specially designed tank that could propel to shore if launched from a vessel.

Goodwood House was utilised by the 6th, 23rd and 121st General Hospitals Royal Army Medical Corps in the run up to D-Day. They were tasked with making preparations for caring for the high number of expected casualties. This included packing tents ready to be erected as temporary hospitals over on the continent.

St Richard's Hospital, like many other hospitals along the South Coast, prepared for D-Day by reducing the number of civilian patients within their care, and relocating them into hospitals inland, in preparation for accepting wounded soldiers expected from the continent. The Graylingwell Psychiatric Hospital also dedicated two wards for D-Day causalities.

Throughout 1943 and early 1944 Allied troops from Britain, Canada and the US undertook training in landing exercises across the south coast, including at the Witterings and Bracklesham Bay. Landing craft troops learnt how to beach and un-beach, tank crews learnt how to manoeuvre their cumbersome

vehicles ashore, and ordinary troops learnt general assault procedures that would prove vital later in the year.

L Harris of Selsey kept a wartime diary and records in the run up to D-Day on Saturday, June 3: "The place is crowded with troops of every description. There is a feeling of tension everywhere, as there seems every indication that preparations are being made to send troops for the invasion of Europe from the beaches here. We are not allowed to go near certain parts without permits, and today I have heard –someone must have been talking – that the American sailors yesterday were paid in French money."

Prior to D-Day established airfields were already present at Tangmere, Merston and Westhampnett. Advanced landing grounds (ALG’s), or temporary airfields were also constructed in Funtington, Apuldram, Selsey, and Bognor and were designed to support the invasion of Europe.

Construction of the airfield at Apuldram started in March 1943. Three hundred acres of farmland had been requisitioned. Two metal track runways were constructed, along with four hangers and tented accommodation.

From 1st April 1944 the airfield was home to three Czech Spitfire Squadrons. On D-Day Spitfires based at Apuldram gave cover to troops landing on the beaches.

At Church Norton in Selsey land that had been used as a private airfield was commandeered. Two cross over runways were constructed in early 1943. On D-Day squadrons based at Selsey provided air cover of the beaches.

The Funtington ALG was completed by September 1943. A short section of road had been closed, trees felled and hedges removed

in order to construct the airfield. No buildings had been included in the planning, as it was proposed that personnel would instead live under canvas or in requisitioned local farm buildings. The control facilities were housed in specially built mobile caravans. On D-Day No 122 Wing’s Mustangs escorted Coastal Command Beaufighters on anti-U-boat attacks. Later in the day they were given the task of escorting bombers towing troop-laden gliders destined for Normandy.

The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre takes in unwanted, abandoned or stray cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs, and gives them a good quality of life until it is possible to find a loving, permanent home for them. Activities include: educating the public, neutering the animals, feeding and general care, and finding forever homes for the many animals in their care. They are seeking a van driver for between one and two days a week to collect and drop off furniture for their charity shops and alternate weekly tip runs. Applicants must be over 25 years of age and physically capable as lifting will be involved. They are looking for someone who can work independently as well as being part of a team alongside the CRRC Charity Shop Coordinator. You will be able to use your own initiative, with a positive and courteous manner.

Self-advocacy Group Volunteer – Impact Initiatives

Impact provides support to 4 self-advocacy groups for people with learning disabilities across West Sussex. They have a volunteer opportunity to support Voice at their monthly meeting in Bognor Regis on the 1st Thursday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Voice is a user-led group, run by and for people with learning disabilities with the help of the paid Group Supporter employed by Impact Initiatives. They aim to help each other to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to have a say in the things that affect them, raise awareness of their concerns and make life better for people with learning disabilities. At their meetings they talk about the things that are important to them.

The volunteer would work alongside the group facilitator and offer practical help at the meeting as well as helping group members to speak up for themselves and participate in the meetings.

Creative Workshop Learning and Engagement Volunteer – Chichester Cathedral Learning and Engagement Department

Chichester Cathedral is committed to supporting people of all ages to learn from this unique and rich environment. It is a place where everyone is welcome to immerse themselves in nine centuries of Cathedral stories - to explore debate and share. Volunteers play an important role in supporting everyone to learn about the Cathedral past and present. Creative Workshop volunteers are facilitators of art, craft and/or drama workshops which are offered as part of the programme for schools, colleges, adults and families. You will: provide a friendly welcome for everyone who visits; support and/or lead the delivery of creative workshops for a wide range of audiences; and attend planning meetings and prepare resources.

Helpers – Chichester Stroke Club

Chichester Stroke Club meet at the Newell Centre, Chichester on a Thursday morning to give support to stroke victims. The Club is a unique facility providing continued aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors when they leave hospital through mental and physical stimulation and support and respite for carers and partners, enabling them to meet likeminded people in a relaxed environment. The club also raises awareness of stroke to the local community through fundraising, website, speakers and outings. Able-bodied helpers are needed to help those who have had a stroke at the club on a Thursday morning from 10am - 12noon. You will need to be able to help others move around, fold up chairs and tables etc.

Running BANK holiday weekend saw five members of Bognor Tone Zone running club take the long trip up to Edinburgh for the marathon.

Jessica Thomson, Peter Ramsdale, Trev and Donna Strowger and Adam Norgett all took part in the 26 mile race through the historic Scottish capital.

The weather was typical of north of the border - rain, breaks of sunshine and strong winds for the last six miles, making it tough for the runners in the closing stages.

That did not deter Jess who was first to finish for the club in a personal best time of 3 hours 26 minutes.

Trev was next across the line finishing, in a personal best time of 3.32. Adam and Donna also recorded personal best times of 4.12 and 4.17 respectively. Peter completed another marathon this year in a solid time of 4.40.

In London, were Justin Geri and Paul Wells running the Vitality London 10k along with Mo Farah.

Geri finished in 48 minutes, whilst Wells finished in 58 minutes, a new PB for the club runner.

Pagham need a win to keep touch PAGHAM CC face an early test to their title credentials as they look to bounce back to winning ways at Roffey 2s tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side remain second in Division Three West after suffering their first defeat of the season at home to leaders Steyning last time out.

With tomorrow's opponents sitting third, Pagham know that they need a win to keep in touch with a strong Steyning side.

Hanks will be pleased with the fight shown by his side in their home defeat.

After winning the toss and losing their skipper early on, Jack Stannard (80) and Nick Smith (72) added 113 for the second wicket.

Much of this scoring was put down to Smith who smashed 12 fours and two sixes to rack up his score in just 50 balls.

Pagham though were unable to capitalise on this fast start with late contributions from Justin Scott (32*) and Richard Bird (16*) helping them to 240-6 off their 45 overs.

Festival is next for Goodwood GOODWOOD'S May Festival has proved to be a big hit with racegoers as thousands flocked to the Sussex track for a mouthwatering three days of action.

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club are taking well to their new surroundings in Division One of the Solent League with backto-back wins.

First up were the University of Portsmouth Shafters, who came to Oaklands Park with a typically young and athletic squad.

The Falcons wasted no time in the early stages, with the first seven hitters reaching base to get Chichester 12-5 ahead by the third inning. Patience and discipline at the plate was key as the Falcons edged around the bases steadily.

Pitcher Jason Mercer was sharp on several comebackers as Bronte Harvey and Cary Chen ably managed the middle infield.

The Falcons chipped away, adding two or three in the next few innings as debutant Beth Ash, hitting 4 for 5 on the day, kept right field locked down to frustrate the Shafters and restrict them to just two runs through to the sixth inning.

With the score at 18-7 in the final inning, the Falcons got the green light to swing away with great effect as Warr tripled, Dave Piesse homered to left and Ash added a further run to win the game at 24-11.

The following week saw Chichester travel west to face the experienced Portsmouth Dodgers.

A good start at bat saw the Falcons get five runs ahead but Ben Sawkins at shortstop was outstanding, making three full-stretch diving catches to leave the Dodgers scratching their heads and unable to score until the third inning.

By now the Falcons were 9-2 up thanks to hard-working Pete Martin, who made a dazzling running grab in centre-left before hitting an RBI triple as Portsmouth began to panic.

Mercer and Olly Howley pounded homers in the fourth before Warr found her swing and forced a fielding error to get Ash round, and David Morris hit opposite field to bring in a further two to take the game well beyond the Dodgers grasp at 13-6.

There was still time for base hits from Molly Rayner and Sarah d’Agar before Sawkins again silenced the field with another spectacular dive to earn the Falcons a 21-7 victory.

Harvey scoops players honour in club awards

to o f Bognor will face Chi City in the Sussex shield

ROCKS skipper Harvey Whyte and young left back Joe Tomlinson were the big winners as the Rocks rounded off their season in style.

More than 100 people packed into Seasons bar at Nyewood Lane last weekend for the club's annual awards evening.

Captain Whyte was all smiles as he received the players' player of the year award from supporters club chairman Ian Guppy, pictured left.

The skipper, who lifted the Sussex Senior Cup for the club for the first time in 32 years, was also awarded the Chairman's Cup. Tomlinson was the other player to be singled out for honours.

His performances from left back after joining the Rocks on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion received rave reviews.

The youngster was justly rewarded with the Supporters Club Player of the Season as well as Most Improved Player.

Other awards handed out included the Kevin Clement Trophy to top scorer Jimmy Muitt and Goal of the Season to Bradley Lethbridge for his strike against Leatherhead.

Chad Field, Calvin Davies and Dan Lincoln were all honoured for making 100 appearances while Doug Tuck received a trophy for playing in 300 matches

in a Bognor shirt.

The Sportsman's Award went to Lee Roberts, who has helped establish Rocks Radio, an online match commentary service provided during Bognor matches. *Sussex Senior Cup winners Rocks will face SCFL Premier champions Chichester City in the annual Sussex Community Shield.

The match, on July 30 at Lancing's Culver Road (7.30pm), will add a competitive edge to Bognor's pre-season preparations with the newlypromoted City keen to impress ahead of their first ever season in Bostik South East.

Admission is £6 adults, £3 concessions and £1 under 18s with all proceeds supporting the NSPCC South & Mid Sussex Branch as part of its 60th anniversary.

Striker Khassal to leave City CHICHESTER City striker Cherelle Khassal has left the club as the Oaklands Park outfit turn their attention on rebuilding under new manager Sadie Blakely.

Chi defied all expectations last season soaring to a third place finish in the National Southern Premier as well as lifting the Sussex county cup.

But the departure of manager Aaron Smith has meant that the club has entered the summer looking to rebuild.

A statement issued earlier this month confirmed former keeper Blakely would be taking charge and the emphasis would be placed on bringing young players through the age groups.

That emphasis is expected to lead to an exodus of senior players - with Khassal the first to confirm she will be playing her football elsewhere next season.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has racked up more than 50 appearances on the wing and up front for Chi, was integral to the club lifting the tier four title in 2017/18.

But injuries last term left the 28-year-old frustrated and Khassal has now drawn a line under her three-year stint at Oaklands Park.

Confirming her departure on social media, Khassal said: "Putting on that green and white jersey, I would always give 100 per cent as this club means a lot to me.

"I have had an amazing time with Chi but this year has been a low point for me with injuries at the start and injuries at the end which has resulted in a bad end to the season for me.

"A massive thank you to everyone for what you have done for me as a player. My time at Chi has now come to an end and I'm very much looking forward to my next chapter.

"I want to wish Sadie and her management the best of luck this season and future seasons, I'm sure you will do a fantastic job."

Blakely, along with her assistant Laura Galway, will be wasting no time in building a squad for next season as Chi look to keep their status in the third tier of the women's game.

With Khassal now gone, the pressure will be on to tie down a series of key players, including top scorer Molly Clark.

Skipper Lauren Cheshire and experienced

centre half Tammy Waine will also be high on the retained list - although both have been linked elsewhere.

A club statement said: "We are, as a committee excited about the future of the club and bringing football to girls and ladies in the local area and progressing our club behind the scenes ready for when we can make the next steps forward."

BOGNOR'S first signing of the season is a familiar face James Crane, who rejoins the Rocks after a year at Worthing.

We sat down with the goalscoring defender to find out how he feels on his return to the club How does it feel to be returning to Bognor?

It’s good to be back!

Obviously I did spend a big part of my career at Nyewood Lane so I'm pleased to be back.

Undoubtedly, after ten years at Bognor, the club has got a big place in my heart. I did need a change, though, which is why I left.

But, there are a lot of factors in football when deciding which club is right, and for me by far the most important is a club which makes me put my head into a cement mixer, which values players running through brick walls and this is it for me.

What did you learn from your time at Worthing?

There's no doubt that Hinsh [Adam Hinshelwood] is a good manager.

They are a good team, the training is good and they are looking to build something.

I've not got a bad word to say about them.

Having said that I was always a Bognor player to their fans and it was quite difficult on that front.

When the time came and we split on amicable terms and there was only really one club I could go to.

Was it strange playing against the Rocks (and a number of former team mates) last year?

It was in some ways. It was a really strange build up as I had friends playing on both sides. I also know a lot of fans on both sides too, with spending so long at Bognor and teaching in

But as soon as I cross that white line I am very competitive and it doesn't matter who I'm playing.

I don’t see who I'm playing against, it's just my job to stop my opponent. I play the game whole heartedly and that will never change.

What are your plans for the summer before returning to pre-season?

I'm just looking forward to enjoying some time off with the family. I have a young boy who is going to be one in the next few months.

So I'll be spending some time with him and my wife, doing some of the things I've not been able to do during the season, like going away or seeing friends.

To be honest I just want to get going, get fit and start playing again.

Are you looking forward to training under Robbie?

My previous time at Bognor was all under Dabba and Jamie so it will be interesting having someone new.

A lot of lads have been very complimentary about Robbie, though. He also tells it exactly how it is. I like that and it's something I respond well to.

What can the Rocks achieve next season?

It will be the same as always.

In this league teams are doing one of two things, either fighting to go up or trying to avoid going down.

In most of my time at Bognor we were chasing promotion so I'd like to think it will be the same next year.

A good start is key and once you get that you can start laying the foundations and then challenging for the top as it gets round to spring.

We just have to take it week by week and see how it goes.

Returning Rock Crane aims to give club a lift

Middleton out to bounce back with Nomads next MIDDLETON CC are looking to return to winning ways in the Sussex Premier Division as they look to bounce back from a 56-run loss to bottom-side Eastbourne.

Sean Heather's side head to Preston Nomads tomorrow (11.30am) looking to continue their good start to the season.

Three wins from four have left Middleton sitting in third place in what looks to be a competitive division.

But Heather's side missed out on the opportunity to go top when they came out on the wrong side of a runfest at the Sports Ground in Sea Lane.

It means that Middleton head to Nomads tomorrow with an identical record to their fourth-placed hosts.

Heather will be hoping that his bowlers fare a little better than last weekend when Eastbourne defied their place in the table to smash the home side's attack to all parts of the ground in scoring 372-8.

After being put into bat the visitors' opener James Hockley quickly set about the Middleton attack.

By the time Heather's side made the breakthrough with Matthew Reynolds trapping Malcolm Johnson LBW (21), Hockley had already reached his half century in a total of 77-1.

He continued to get on the front foot, adding 59 with

Eastbourne skipper Jacob Smith (35) before being joined

by Alastair Orr. The pair then put their foot down, before Hockley eventually fell for 119 off 104 balls when Mahesh Rawat snapped up a chance off the bowling of Harry Hovey.

Orr then kept on the scoring, reaching his own century as he hit ten fours and four sixes in his total of 116 off 84 balls before being dismissed in the final over of the innings.

Tommy Davies (3-62) was the pick of the Middleton bowlers as the visitors posted a mammoth total.

Heather's side set about their task with real intent as Hovey (63) and the skipper (46) added 113 for the opening wicket.

The fall of Hovey though saw Middleton lose three quick wickets with overseas player Rawat and Patrick Colvin forced to rebuild.

They did with style adding 155 for the fourth wicket before Colvin (72) was caught off the bowling of David Twine (4-62).

Rawat (81 off 72 balls) then fell one run later with the Indian's departure all but ending Middleton's hopes.

Only Will Burrows (13) could then reach double figures as Heather's side were dismissed for 316 with nearly four overs still to play - 56 runs adrift of the Eastbourne tally.

Football CHICHESTER City have revealed their pre-season schedule ahead of the first ever season in Bostik South East.

Miles Rutherford's side won promotion to step four of the non-league pyramid after winning the SCFL Premier at a canter.

They will open preparations for the new season with an away match against an Isle of Wight representative side on July 6th.

That will be followed by games at Arundel (July 13), Christchurch (July 16), Hamble (July 20) and AFC Portchester (July 23).

A home match against Bostik Premier side Worthing on July 27 follows before the Sussex Community Shield clash with Bognor at Lancing on July 30.

Pre-season will be wrapped up with an away match at Rutherford's former side Moneyfields on August 3.

ROCKS stalwart James Crane said it was an easy decision to make to return to Nyewood Lane from Sussex rivals Worthing.

The goal-scoring left back proved to be a fan favourite as he racked up ten seasons at Bognor.

During that time he made more than 400 appearances, including netting a long range winner against Altrincham in the FA Trophy that culminated in the club being just one game from Wembley.

But, after leaving for the Rebels last summer in search of a new challenge, Crane has now returned to the Rocks ready to help the club try and win promotion from Bostik Premier.

In an exclusive interview with the Post, the former Hearts player said he was delighted to return.

Crane said: "It’s good to be back! Undoubtedly, after ten years at Bognor, the club has got a big place in my heart."

He added: "In most of my time at Bognor we've been chasing promotion so I'd like to think it will be the same next year.

"A good start is key and once you get that you can start laying the foundations and then challenging for the top as it gets round to spring."

A 14th placed finish last term was a disappointment to all involved with the club - especially as with two months of the season to go, Bognor were firmly in the playoff hunt.

A win in the final of the Sussex Senior Cup against Burgess Hill Town ensured the season ended on a positive note.

But Pearce is under no illusions that the hard work in planning for next season begins now - and he believes signing Crane is the first piece of the jigsaw.

Pearce said: "Everyone knows all about James' qualities and it was such a simple decision to make for us and for him. He has an abundance of ability, great desire and he knows where the goal is, too. The supporters love him and I think it's fair to say he is back at his spiritual home now.

"In modern parlance, signing James was what is called, I believe, a 'no-brainer'.

"As a club we are determined to build on last season and as much as we can, we want to get our business done early.

"We have a number of players who we are talking to and we very much hope that we can bring the fans positive recruitment news soon."
