THe current three-year partnership which started in 2016 between the district council and Public Health ended on March 31.

Around 533 people have benefited from the weight-loss programme and 47 local businesses have used the services to help improve the health and wellbeing of their staff.

Rotting play park will be upgraded

A contribution of £40,000 section 106 funding from developers (£13,800 from work east of East Walls and £26,200 from the Rousillon Barracks) has been released to the Swanfield Park Residents Involvement Group (SPRING).

THe project has also acquired £25,500 from the government’s Pocket Park Plus fund.

However, work had to start by April 1, or the money would be lost. As the date was before the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, an urgent decision was made to accept the money.

At Tuesday's cabinet meeting, Cllr Eileen Lintill said: "In order to meet

Council urges residents to vote CHICHESTER residents are being reminded to register to vote and ensure their voice is heard in this May’s local elections.

Voters will be able to have their say at the ballot box on THursday, May 2, and elect a councillor for every ward in the district.

Parish council elections are also taking place.

Following a boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, this year’s elections will be the first with 36 seats, a reduction from 48 in the last election in 2015.

"Make sure your voice is heard this election and register to vote before Friday, April 12," said Diane Shepherd, chief executive and returning officer at the district council.

"Councillors make hundreds of important decisions about how your

local council services are run each year and are responsible for over 80 different services, many of which impact your life every day.

"It’s especially important to remember to register to vote if you have just turned 18, or if you have moved house recently."

Around 200 residents and visitors to Chichester were keen to meet BBC's Strictly Come Dancing star, Anton Du Beke, as he signed copies of his new book, One Enchanted Evening.

Men, women and children were seen in the queue eagerly awaiting their copy to be signed and have a photo taken with the dancing star.

Mr Du Beke took the time to greet guests at the book store in West Street

and chat to them, sign their copy of his novel and have a photograph taken.

Chichester resident Penny Parvin was one of the first in the queue, having arrived 45 minutes early.

She said: "I was so excited to have the pleasure of meeting Anton at Waterstones. He asked me how I was and gave me a kiss.

"He was such a lovely person, so warm and friendly. He signed my book and I have got that to treasure."

THe book is set in London in 1936 and follows Raymond de Guise, accustomed to waltzing with the highest of society.

Raymond knows a secret from his past could threaten all he holds dear. THe storm clouds of war are gathering, and beneath the glitz and glamour of the

ballroom lurks an irresistible world of scandal and secrets.

Manager of the shop, Ollie Browning, said: "It was fantastic that Anton Du Beke could join in us at Waterstones Chichester for what proved to be a very successful evening.

"It was great to hear from so many customers how much they enjoyed the experience of chatting to Anton, getting their books signed and even the odd impromptu ballroom lesson. I was delighted with the turnout. THe success will help us put on more big name events in the future.

"We are planning to have lot more signings in the future so check in store and on our website for announcements."

Household tip catches fire - See page four

THe report also said: 'THe percentage of people with type 2 diabetes who have a diagnosis in Chichester is 71.8 per cent. THis is worse than the England average, which means there are estimated to be a further 29.2 per cent who have the disease but are not diagnosed.'

Cllr Susan Taylor questioned the diabetes figures, saying: "THat totals 100 per cent. It sounds as though everyone has got diabetes in Chichester."

Cllr Eileen Lintill clarified this by stating: "I think what that is saying is that of all the people who have diabetes, 71.8 per cent have been diagnosed and that 29.2 per cent have not been."

Funding for 2019/20 has been confirmed as ÂŁ257,969 from the county council and the cost of delivering the wellbeing hub and additional services are included in this. THe district council's contribution of support and management costs is funded annually from the council's base budget at a cost of around ÂŁ30,000.

including one to one appointments or 30 minute 'MOTs'.

THey also deliver workshops, talk to community groups and work at outreach venues to ensure the service is available across the district, in particular, GP practices in Petworth, Loxwood and Selsey.

Around 71 per cent of the Chichester population are considered to be active to the recommended level and the council states in its report that while this is considered encouraging, it still means that 29 per cent are not and that physical activity and weight loss go hand in hand.

A project as part of the programme will work with adults enrolled on the adult weight management programme and individuals referred by a wellbeing advisor or support to be more active.

Cllr Roger Barrow said: "I think this is a fine example. We have often stated that our determination is to support vulnerable people in our communities and it's one of my personal commitments as well.

"So I absolutely welcome this.

It really does meet our corporate priorities."

District council leader Tony Dignum added: "It's thoroughly good news isn't it?"

` Midhurst parking A PROJECT to resurface and reline the North Street car park in Midhurst will start on Monday, April 8.

THe work is being carried out by Chichester District Council and was identified as a high priority by its parking services team and members of the Midhurst Vision Group.

Works will last for up to five days, and if completed earlier, the car park will be re-opened. During the works, season ticket holders will be able to use the Midhurst Rother College car park which is open from 7am to 10pm, while pay and display customers will be able to use the Grange Road or Post Office car parks.

THe 177-space car park serves a large majority of the town’s visitors on a daily basis, and is often the first area that visitors to the town see.

` Man attacked POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an attack on a man in Chichester and in particular, a taxi driver who may have seen the incident.

THe 31-year-old local victim was assaulted around 2.15am on Sunday morning (March 24) in Swanfield Drive after getting out of a taxi.

He was punched and sustained several facial fractures to his eye socket, cheek and jaw, requiring medical treatment at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about the suspect is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 323 of 25/03.

The city's tip will burn for few days

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WEST SUSSEX Fire and Rescue Service have said a blaze at Chichester's household tip is likely to burn for a few days.

Fire crews were alerted to a fire at the site at 8.25pm on Tuesday, April 2. Crews found a developing fire in the main building of the centre. At the height of the fire, four fire engines and the aerial ladder platform were at the scene.

Crews remained at the scene overnight into Wednesday.

THe cause of the fire is unknown and there have been no reported injuries.

Following consultation with the Environment Agency it was decided to allow the fire to burn in a controlled way and not use water, in order to prevent pollution to local water courses. THis is being kept under close review.

At around 7am on Wednesday morning, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said on their Twitter page: "Crews are still on the scene of the fire at Stane Street, #Chichester.

"It is under control but is likely to burn for a number of days. THe site is closed to the public for the foreseeable future. We will continue to keep you updated."

THe Westhampnett household waste and recycling site will be closed for the next few days at least and residents are being asked to avoid using any site if possible in the meantime.

THe nearest alternative sites are Bognor Regis, which will be open seven days a week for the time being, Worthing, Billingshurst and Littlehampton.

However, Bognor Regis is not able to accept trailers.

THe new signs which have been installed, pictured above, show the city boundary but at a parish meeting of the city of Chichester last week, resident Alan Carn said they did not provide the information which was actually needed, including asking motorists to slow down.

A spokesperson for Chichester City Council has responded. THey said: "THe situation about boundary signs is that we replaced the existing four and added a further five – a total of nine.

"THe additional signs at other places in the city (in addition to the four existing north, south, east and west ones) were requested at the annual parish meeting in 2017 by Mr Carn.

"Obviously, in the period of time from the request, we would have

been more than happy to discuss with Mr Carn, or anyone else, specific issues and concerns about wording/ messaging etc but nothing was heard and we used as precedent the existing design."

A second, lower sign was being considered, which gave the drive carefully/slow down message. Mr Carn had been advised of other possibilities available to local residents about speeding traffic such as Community Speedwatch.

"As stated, we do rely heavily on feedback from ward councillors (a number of whom have represented the area for some time) and the matter was discussed at various meetings – open to the public and minutes online.

"A wider consultation is a fair point, but it also brings with it the possibility of differing views to resolve, some of which might be contrary to others."

District council respond to county over parking plans

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OFFICERS at Chichester District Council have responded to the county council's proposed parking management plan.

West Sussex County Council has undertaken a road space audit for Chichester which examined current street parking demand and considered future needs and pressures on the road network and parking supply.

One of the concepts which was explored within the resultant report, and which the county council is investigating further, is to extend the existing controlled parking zone within Chichester to cover the entire city.

THe county council undertook a consultation process on the parking management pan during March and around 800 responses were received.

It is anticipated that results from the consultation will be considered and reported to the county local committee during the spring.

Feedback from the district council includes a proposed phased approach.

THeir report says: "If the countyy council goes ahead and implements a city-wide parking management plan then the district council would recommend that the implementation is phased, which would allow Chichester to review any displacement issues,

recruit and train staff to carry out enforcement and recruit and train staff in the administration of the plan."

Officer, Tania Murphy, said at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday: "As a district council, we currently have an agency agreement with the county council to undertake all of the enforcement on their behalf and we also administer all of the resident permits.

"If this scheme which is proposed comes into effect, then the county has indicated to us that they would like Chichester to extend the agreement to essentially undertake the enforcement in the extended areas as well.

"We have also spoken to Chichester District Parking Forum and feedback included concern that residents within the proposed parking management plan area will receive a sufficient number of permits, at least two per household before permits are rolled out to commuters.

"THey also ask that the statutory consultation should commence in September rather than July, as there will be another round of consultations, to avoid the period of time where local residents could be away on holiday and where there are currently no parking issues, the zones should be considered for removal from the proposed scheme."

Cllr Jane Kilby said: "I'm sure many residents in the zones where there

is unmanageable street parking will welcome this.

"I'm glad to hear that residents will get priority on permits because I think this is the one area of concern where there is a lot of commuter parking at the moment. Residents don’t have the access to their own street, let alone their own properties.

"I do have concern where we have out of town, small businesses where they rely on the on-street parking for their customers and clients."

Cllr Roger Barrow added: "THis is quite a major change. While many residents will welcome it, I can understand there will be some that don't welcome it at all, hence all the responses they have had."

In Lyndhurst Road, Chichester, on Monday, March 25, police received a report that a garage was broken into. Serial 1254 25/3.

Also on Monday, police received a report of a break-in at Cowdray Park, Midhurst, when a number of power tools were stolen. Serial 0214 25/3.

On THursday, March 28, a van was broken into and a number of tools stolen in Chichester Drive, Tangmere. Serial 0351 28/3.

Also on THursday, a vehicle was broken into and tools stolen from Merlin Close, Tangmere. Serial 0436 28/3.

In Hampden Place, Tangmere, on THursday, a vehicle was broken into.

An untidy search was undertaken but nothing stolen.

New policy agreed for major city events A NEW policy is being looked at to conduct how major events are considered in the city.

THe work is being carried out after concerns were raised about how permission was given for a temporary ice rink in Priory Park over the winter.

On Tuesday, Chichester District Council cabinet members discussed the ice rink, which was held at Priory Park last year.

Council leader Tony Dignum said: "It was a major event, there’s no doubt about that and it was also a controversial one."

As reported in the Chichester Post last month, the council's overview and scrutiny committee voted to ask the cabinet to delay any decision about a future rink until after May’s elections and Priory Park or any other site should be offered at an open market tender commercial rate.

Chief executive Diane Shepherd explained that it was not lawful for the council to hold off processing applications but it was unlikely that

anything would be received and decided by the next planning meeting, before the elections on April 24.

Chairman of the Friends of Priory Park, Philip Robinson, said after the meeting: "We are very pleased that the district council recognises that the process by which it reached a decision to site an ice rink in Priory Park last winter was flawed, divided the community, and failed to take into account those most affected - habitual users of the park and local residents.

"We believe the post-event report by council officers to the scrutiny committee greatly overstated ticket sales and we know it significantly understated complaints by residents to council officers.

"I understand a number of residents have referred matters arising from the ice rink to the Ombudsman.

"We trust that the new policy will better reflect the impact of such events, to the benefit of all concerned."

Market stall for eco group

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SPECIAL stall was set up in the city centre's regular Wednesday Market.

Eco Chi Meet-up, which was founded in January by Rachel Austin and Sarah Sharp, got active and went out into Chichester to spread the word about all the exciting projects which are going on locally to try to improve the environment.

Under the umbrella of Transition Chichester, the group will be reaching out to members of the public and spreading the word about climate change and ways in which people can make a difference.

THe first stall took place this week in North Street, near Marks & Spencer.

Volunteers made people welcome with free cups of herbal tea and a chance to chat about local environmental issues.

Some of the projects the group is involved with are return the plastic, transition swap shop, the repair cafe, conservation volunteers, composting, anti-idling and litter-picking campaigns.

Tom Broughton, steering group member of the South Coast Climate Alliance, said: "Another key part of this Wednesday’s stall was a letter-writing campaign to our county councillors

ahead of the West Sussex County Council debate about climate change due to take place on Friday, April 5."

Co-founder of Eco Chi Meet-up, Sarah Sharp, added: "THis is a really exciting development for the group. It really is time for us to get out of our bubble and talk to more people about the issues that really matter for the future security and wellbeing of our children and grandchildren.

"Climate change can be scary and overwhelming, but if we work towards practical ways in which the community can get involved and support each other to make changes, we can actually make friends and have fun along the way while making important changes in the way we live.

"THe Eco Meet-up group has been a great way to spread ideas and support campaigns – I am confident the Eco Chi market stall will have a wider reach and prove very positive for our city."

Kate McNicol, a member of the group, also added: "I was looking for ways to actively improve my local area.

"I have two children and I am concerned that if we don’t all start getting involved and engaged with our local environment then our children’s future will be very uncertain due to global warming and a lack of animal and plant biodiversity."

STUDENTS from Bourne Community College are benefiting from the advice and expertise of officers from Chichester District Council as part of a national mentoring scheme.

THe Be the Change programme, which has been developed by LoveLocalJobs.com and Graham Moore, of Metamoorephosis, works with disengaged 13 and 14-year-olds to help give them the confidence and motivation to make the right choices for their future.

Students at the district’s six secondary schools have been matched with business guides who have volunteered from a variety of organisations from across Chichester area. THe students then benefit from a series of sessions with their guides that help to break down barriers which may be preventing them from achieving their full potential.

Nourishing the community and helping to eliminate food waste A Chichester charity on a mission to eliminate hunger and food waste through education and the redistribution of quality surplus food is celebrating it's second birthday.

Based on the original OzHarvest model which was founded in November 20014by Ronni Kahn, UKHarvest is a not-for-profit perishable food rescue operation that collects quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivers it, direct and free of charge, to charities.

THey provide much needed assistance to vulnerable people, collecting surplus food from all types of food providers, including fruit and vegetable markets, supermarkets, hotels, wholesalers, farmers, stadiums, corporate events, catering companies, shopping centres, delis, cafes, restaurants, film and TV shoots and boardrooms.

THe charity based in Market Road, Chichester moved in around three months ago and have already grown by 20 per cent in that time.

THey have a fleet of three vans and cover a large part of Hampshire, all of West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and have just

"It's also about budgeting so for those on a low income it helps them to understand how to buy fresh ingredients

Developing new skills at exhibit

THe show, now in its fifth year, has proved a great success showcasing the work of new and aspiring photographers from Chichester Camera Club.

THe print exhibitors have the freedom to display their work however they wish, with no rules on size or subject matter or judging.

A spokesperson from the camera club said: "We have run this exhibition for five years to allow our club and intermediate members an opportunity to exhibit their images in a way that they would like with no judgment.

f The show gave new members the chance to show their work "THis year, we had six new members taking part, most of whom had never mounted and shown their work to the public before – quite a daunting prospect.

"As a result of the openness of the exhibition there was the usual creativeness on display from one wonderful 100cm by 150 cm image of Vietnamese women by Chris Gledhill to a collage of 20 images of ice patterns arranged using foamboard to create a tile display by Sue Watts.

"One of the most striking exhibits was a series of images by Corrine Noyalet of the Gilet Jaunes demonstrations in Paris together with her thoughts.

Amongst others commented on was the panel giving the viewer a real feeling of the colour and bustle of New York in the summer.

THe exhibition has gained a reputation for being innovative, with people coming from as far as Alton, Southampton and Bexhill to see it and many returning each year as a result.

THe club has over the years steadily increased its numbers with a big jump this year to from 200 to 240 over the weekend.

A new member to the club, who did not wish to be named, summed up both the reason for the exhibition and the inspiration that it gives to both participants and visitors alike.

He said: "For those of us taking our first steps in ‘proper’ photography, it was a wonderful opportunity to mount and show off our prints in any way we liked without fear of formal judgment.

"It also was a very good chance to feel like a full member of the club, network and share ideas and tips. THe cakes were outstanding too."

Children get involved at the living museum CHILDREN and families visiting the Weald and Downland Living Museum took part in the Historic Life Weekend.

THe museum in Singleton hosted different craft demonstrations across the site with opportunities to talk to craftspeople and have a go at many activities too.

On the Saturday, visitors to the museum could enjoy a ten-minute talk on various topics including; carpentry, baking bread in the 1920s, meeting Roger Champion, master carpenter, stone carving and Tudor shops and shopping.

Melanie South took her two children, Jack, aged five, and William, aged seven, along.

She said: "We have had a lovely day today, seeing all the different activities and leaning different skills, some which are still used today.

"Jack really enjoyed looking at the watermill and spotting all the animals and William was fascinated with the wood carving activities."

On Mothering Sunday, the annual springtime clock change meant the museum was open until 6pm and children could spend some quality time with their mothers.

A lot of similar activities were held, including book binding, lace-making, willow basketry, corn dolly making and charcoal portraits and stool making.

As it was a special day, children could collect a daffodil posy for mothers and grandmothers from the market square.

A spokesperson for the museum said: "It was a very successful and busy day on Sunday – marking the beginning of British Summer Time.

"THe museum came alive, with many

happy mothers and grandmothers welcoming their gifted daffodil posies, previewing the soon to be opened bakehouse from Newdigate, Surrey, and the family activity hub in Sole Street."

Brainy quizzers help raise minibus funds

Helpers needed for hospital shop THE FRIENDS of St Richard’s have vacancies for new helpers to join the volunteer team who staff the popular Shop and Trolley, serving patients, staff and visitors.

THe Friends are looking for volunteers who want to be part of a team, helping to support patients, visitors and staff.

Regular and relief helpers are needed, especially on Wednesdays.

"It’s a genuinely friendly group of people who give their time to support our local hospital," said Jane Ramage of the Friends.

"THe contribution they make to St Richard’s is amazing. For instance, it really makes a difference for patients on a daily basis when the trolley comes round with newspapers and a host of useful items, pushed by a volunteer

A FUNDRAISING quiz night held in the city raised £250 to help pay for a minibus.

THe 461 Air Cadets need a new minibus to transport cadets to activities such as flying on RAF bases, adventure training and other events across the region.

Polly Meynell, civilian committee member of 461 Chichester Air Cadets,

"Our shop volunteers are happy to help customers find what they want.

For volunteers, it’s a rewarding way to give something back to the community – and even more rewarding is the fact that every pound of profit is spent on equipment for our hospital."

A daily rota of three, three hour shifts operates for the shop (weekdays) while the trolley is taken round daily by pairs of volunteers over two, two and a half hour shifts during mornings.

Duties include handling money, sorting orders and filling shelves, as well as providing a friendly face for our customers.

College merges with Worthing

Cheque donation for Sage House A DEMENTIA charity has received a cheque for over £100 from a retirement living company.

Churchill Retirement Living has welcomed its first owners at Harington Lodge in Chichester and the Churchill Foundation, presented a cheque for £1,000 to local charity Dementia Support for their dementia services based in Sage House, Tangmere.

Dementia Support was put forward

by Harington Lodge owners and sales executive Karen Hills to receive the donation, through the Churchill Foundation’s small grants programme.

Receiving the cheque last month, Dementia Support’s community events and fundraising lead, Natalie Burchett,said: "We’re extremely grateful to the Churchill Foundation and the owners at Harington Lodge for this very generous donation.

"It’s less than a year since we opened

` Bognor Road fire FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze at a single-storey building in Bognor Road, Chichester, at 8.40pm on Wednesday night.

Two engines and a support unit was sent to the scene.

Crews tackled a fire in the ground floor of the building, which was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, two high pressure hose reels, a covering jet, a safety jet and a hydrant.

Crews then damped down the area, and left at 11.30pm.

Tech bills and automation ROBOTIC automation and artificial intelligence sound like subjects for one of the more complicated episodes of Doctor Who – not a county council.

But West Sussex is looking into how to use the futuristic-sounding technology to improve the way its services are delivered to customers, and even predict what those customers want.

Officers are at the very early stage of working out what is and isn’t possible.

At a meeting of the performance and finance committee, members were told that council and business technology experts Capita were ‘investigating the use of new technology solutions such as robotic automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to make service delivery more effective and efficient’.

A council spokesman said: “We are in the early stages of investigating what is possible and what other organisations are doing in an increasingly digital world.

“Our emerging IT strategy was used as the source to identify some of these technologies and to highlight those that might be of greatest benefit in the future.

“Consequently, the council is keeping track of a wide range of innovative technology that can be used to simplify and speed up customer transactions.

“Other organisations have used software robots to perform high volume, time consuming, manual data entry work or used artificial intelligence

to predict what customers want to apply for or to tell them how to get to the right service or right place for assistance quicker.

“THis will help us improve efficiency and make sure we target our resources more effectively.”

A whopping tech bill is also heading towards the county council as it prepares to replace 5,700 computers.

THe cost of buying new laptop and desktop systems with extended fiveyear warranties and ‘special security features’ will run to millions of pounds.

THe issue was raised during a discussion about cyber-security at a meeting of the regulation, audit and accounts committee on Monday, March 25.

Steve Waight (Con, Goring) pointed out that his ageing council computer, which was given to him in 2012, was still running on Windows 7, even though Microsoft had hailed Windows 10 as its ‘most secure software’.

THe meeting was told that all of the council’s devices had to be

using Windows 10 by early January 2020, after which Microsoft would no longer provide security updates for Windows 7.

Roland Mezulis, chief information officer, said the upgrade was being tested on a pilot group to ensure ‘that the things that need to work with it actually work’.

A spokesman said: “THe council plans in the long term to equip its workforce with appropriate digital technology.

“Where possible, equipment is acquired with a five-year warranty included in the price.

“THis means that we expect to replace a user’s computer once every five years and we plan our funding to achieve that.

Filmed with help of Chichester Free School, the video uses 100 kilograms of textiles – the amount wasted every five minutes in the county – to recreate a recycling logo.

Filmed from the sky using drone technology, the film hopes to encourage people to repair, reuse, or recycle instead of throwing textiles away.

Steve Read, West Sussex County Council’s director of energy, waste and environment, said: “West Sussex residents threw away nearly 11,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes, towels, blankets or sheets into the general rubbish last year.

“Most of these items could have been saved from the general rubbish by repairing them, using them for a different purpose, or recycling them.

“Disposing of this amount of textiles

cost the county council a staggering £1.7 million last year alone.”

THe West Sussex Waste Partnership has been running a campaign called Tackling Textiles to try to change the situation.

THe campaign has been showing people how to rescue, repair, alter, and make use of textiles to avoid them ending up in the bin.

Mr Read added: “In the video, we asked the students of Chichester Free School what they think recycling is, where recycling goes and how they feel when they recycle.

“I’m really impressed with how much knowledge these young recyclers and future environmental leaders have. I hope this can encourage more residents to repair, reuse and recycle their textiles.”

Patients discharged earlier from hospital with new plans

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE THAN 1,200 more inpatients left Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester in the morning over the last 12 months, thanks to a major improvement project piloted on 14 medical wards.

In addition to helping patients return home earlier in the day, the pilot wards at Western Sussex Hospitals have also admitted a higher number of patients this year – on average, around 13 more a week.

Chief operating officer Jayne Black said: "Our early discharge improvement project is about doing what’s best for patients, both those ready to leave hospital, as well as others in need of a

ward bed.

"We know patients prefer to be discharged in the morning, which means they can benefit from better community, social and primary care services available during the day.

"It also means more patients can be admitted sooner onto wards, so they too can benefit from our specialist consultant, therapeutic and diagnostic support services."

THis winter, the early discharge improvement project has helped the trust care for an unprecedented number of patients while, at the same time, reducing reliance on agency staff.

Since April 1, 2018, 60,000 patients have required emergency admission onto wards at St Richard’s and Worthing hospitals - an increase of 6.4 per cent on the year before.

High demand usually forces hospitals to open more beds, which not only places a greater burden on staff but costs much more as expensive agency personnel are hired to provide extra cover.

However, despite admitting more patients than ever before over the past 12 months, the trust opened fewer beds and reduced agency spend by £1.8m.

THis was only possible because of the early discharge project and the trust’s other 'patient first' innovations, such as expanded ambulatory care areas, introduced through this year’s winter planning.

Over the past year, 45 per cent of patients from these wards were discharged before 3pm – up from only 30 per cent the year before. A further 18 wards are now signing up to the improvement project.

Business2Schools was established to connect businesses such as Jaguar Land Rover, Tesco and several city financial firms with schools so that pupils can benefit from both cutting edge technology and high-quality furniture.

THe programme has resulted in thousands of pounds of furniture and equipment, including state of the art computers – surplus to requirements for businesses, but still fullyfunctional and way beyond the reach of a normal school IT budget – being given to schools in the Chichester, Bognor Regis, Kent and Watford areas.

Business2Schools plans to expand the programme across the UK creating new opportunities for both schools and businesses.

Lindsey Parslow founder of Business2Schools, commented: "We hope to create an ethical and environmental solution to the way companies in the UK replenish, refurbish or relocate their offices.

THe programme aims to help businesses and schools collaborate in a sustainable way that has the added benefit of improving the level of infrastructure in schools

Dear Sir I found it utterly ironic that your front page headline on March 29 was about cyclists' fears of traffic in Chichester.

In my and many other people's experience, the ones who experience real fear are the pedestrians in Chichester who every day are in danger of being very badly hurt by anti-social, law-breaking cyclists who cycle not only on the pedestrianised areas in the centre of the city but also on all pavements.

When challenged, these cyclists verbally abuse pedestrians or even threaten them physically.

I, and many others, agree with Lord Winston who was very recently physically assaulted by a female cyclist in London whom he had challenged for riding on a pavement.

He believes that cyclists should be required to have licence plates so that their appalling behaviour can be reported to the police and action taken against them.

Chichester City Council knows that cyclists are a real problem for

pedestrians in Chichester but does not have the manpower to tackle them.

Why not start a campaign in the Chichester Post to keep cyclists off pavements and the pedestrianised areas?

You would be doing a great public service.

Dear Sir I read with interest Kelly Wickham’s report (March 29) on concerns over the dangers of cycling around Chichester city centre.

While there is clearly a need to make cycling as safe as possible, please spare a thought for those on foot.

Cllr Martyn Bell was reported to have expressed a desire – in the interests of cycling safety – “for the whole of the Hornet to be pedestrianised”.

My understanding of pedestrianisation is the conversion of an area for the use of people proceeding on foot only.

On several occasions I have had a 'near miss' with cyclists on existing pedestrianised areas or on pavements in the city.

By all means protect the cyclist from the car, but not at the expense of the pedestrian.

Wildlife campaign set up by villagers VILLAGERS in Westbourne have launched a campaign to save local wildlife habitats and the endangered creatures living in them.

THey are calling on residents to look out for wildlife, and then log their sightings online to help provide vital evidence that local green spaces should be preserved.

THe focus of the campaign is an area of local countryside regarded by naturalists as a 'wildlife corridor', linking the South Downs National Park and the coast.

Chichester District Council is proposing to give the area special recognition, so it can be a haven where animals can move, migrate and thrive.

Local environmental group Greening Westbourne is hoping its new campaign; 'Westbourne Wildlife Watch', will provide evidence to support this move.

Greening Westbourne secretary Martin Yallop said: "Wildlife all over the UK is threatened by development, intensive

farming, pollution and climate change.

"We’re trying to do our bit locally to make a difference. We’re asking people to keep an eye out for animals when they’re out walking or in their gardens.

"It’s quick and easy, and if people struggle to identify what they’ve seen, there’s a lot of help and information in books and online.

"It’s important to report sightings because if there’s evidence that an area is home to important species, it has a better chance of being protected.

"Endangered creatures are the most crucial to report, but people can also log more common ones, as they’re under threat too. It’s a sad fact that many species that used to be common, like starlings and house sparrows, are now declining.”

WITH some 60,000 bulbs ready to burst into colourful bloom, this year’s Tulip Festival at Arundel Castle is likely to confirm it as one of the top similar events in the country.

THe opening date for the monthlong festival depends on the weather but things are looking good for a midApril start to the fabulous co-ordinated displays.

Among the 120 named tulips on display, visitors can delight in Olympic Flame, Lilac Time, Swan Wings, Fancy Frills, Apeldoorn’s Elite, Black Parrot and Negrita, plus the beautiful peonyflowered Angelique.

Planted in an array of special horticultural designs, throughout the Collector Earl’s Garden 4,000 Pink Impression and Purple Prince tulips will be on show. Nearby, in the Wild Flower Garden, by the Stumpery, there will soon be a display of more than 8,000 mixed tulips.

Entry to the gardens with the stunning spring blooms is included in the usual entry price to the castle.

And if your green-fingered interests extend to a wider range of flowers, don’t miss the plant fair in the castle’s grounds on April 28.

Last year, queues of gardeners anxious to get in to the lower grounds for the event extended into High Street.

THis year, more than 20 specialist nurseries will be exhibiting and selling a wide range of locally grown, good quality, interesting, and, often unusual, plants, bulbs and shrubs.

Standard admission tickets include entry to the Plant Fair or tickets just for the fair can be bought, although those are not valid for the gardens or castle.

With its centuries of history, Arundel Castle is a fantastic backdrop to learn more about the past and Easter weekend will feature the life at the time of the Crusades when Christian forces from Europe united to fight against Moslems in the Holy Land.

THe scene is the year 1189 and Richard the Lionheart, King of England, prepares to set off on the THird Crusade and the castle is the scene for these preparations.

A 12th century encampment is the wonderful setting for demonstrations of armour, combat, archery and falconry throughout the day from 10am-4.30pm.

Crafts include making mail armour, leather working, scribing and cooking.

On the way into the woods you’ll pass the octagonal pumphouse that once brought water to the estate and at the edge of the woods is Nore Hill Folly, a mock castle gatehouse built in 1814. THe nearby Roman road of Stane Street is also an interesting walking route.

THe George itself isn't too hard to find, being just off the busy A27 between Chichester and Fontwell but once inside its doors you are a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Since taking over in 2013, owners Anita and James have done everything they can to create an “experience” which is both truly satisfying and distinctively English.

Yet, don't think tradition has to mean rustic food, the menu is sophisticated but hearty. As much as possible, everything is sourced locally - meat, fish and vegetables - and where more exotic ingredients are needed these come from Commonwealth countries.

THe best of British ethos continues with the alcohol choices too as all the ale and beer is from English breweries.

THere is an impressive range of British classic dishes on the menu - no pizza or pasta here - and the weekly pie night is popular with many regulars. Puddings are traditional favourites too.

With longer days and warmer weather, the 40-acre downland site north of Chichester is open daily from 10.30am to 6pm, and from April 8-22 there is the chance for visitors to try crafts and traditional games or just admire its animals, including heavy horses, Southdown lambs and sheep and working oxen.

Demonstrations of how people in the past celebrated Easter will be the focus of events from Good Friday, April 19, to Easter Monday, April 22, when there will be

a different programme of events on each day.

THe museum's most recent re-erected building, the bakehouse from Newdigate, will be put into use for baking Hot Cross Buns, which visitors can taste, and the much older Tudor kitchen of Winkhurst will host demonstrations of cooking food from that era.

THroughout the museum, its knowledgeable and friendly volunteers will be providing short talks on various aspects of how the festival was marked through the ages.

For children, activities will include decorating eggs, a trail to follow and face painting.

On Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, a Tudor-style market will be held around the museum's central square. Here, visitors will find pies made in a portable oven, ballad selling, hawkers of kitchen supplies, glass, second-hand shoes, rush mats and just about anything anyone could buy, plus wandering traders and stalls under the market hall.

As well as crafts, entertainment for children includes Punch and Judy performances, a magic show and balloon modelling plus circus skills, including juggling, diabalo and plate spinning.

Again, there will be talks about different aspects of how people lived in days gone by, illustrated by the backdrop of the 50-plus genuine re-erected buildings, such as the watermill, next to which is the pond with its ducks and, possibly, some ducklings eagerly waiting to be fed by visitors.

8-22 APRIL

Come and try craft activities and play traditional games. See heavy horses, Southdown lambs, Saddleback pigs, our working oxen and other traditional farm animals.

Easter Weekend from Good Friday – Easter Monday you can experience traditional Easter preparations and celebrations starting with our Good Friday Bake and a Tudor market.

There will also be egg painting, bonnet making, an Easter egg trail and an Easter bonnet parade in the Market Square on Easter Monday.

Easter Sunday will have a similar programme of indoor and outdoor attractions for all the family.

THroughout the weekend, donkeys will be on the site, close to the Gateway building which houses the entrance gallery, shop and museum's Waterside cafe with its balconies overlooking the pond.

Highlight of Easter Monday will be a bonnet parade at 2.30pm for children who have created their finery earlier in the day. THe parade will be accompaneid by King Henry's Duo, which will be playing at other times too.

As with the other days, there will be Easter baking, talks, a tour of some of the museum's artefacts not usually seen in the basement of the Gridshell building and a last chance to visit the temporary exhibition of Roger Champion's furniture.

All the buildings on the site will be open, offering a glimpse into how our rural ancestors lived and worked over the past 1,000 years, including tradesmen’s workshops, a church and a market hall, and homes dating from medieval times. THere is also a working woodyard, gardens are being cultivated and a sculpture trail among trees can be followed.

THe waterside cafe is open throughout the year and dogs on leads are welcome at the museum, which has free parking.

Although the 1969 air race was divided into a number of categories, the museum has decided to focus the exhibition on the subsonic jet category and in particular the performance of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR1 aircraft, then new to the RAF. Two Harriers took part in the race and the museum is proud to own one of them, XV744.

In addition to information display boards about the race, there will be models, colouring for children and a film which the museum has produced using footage of the Harriers in the race flown by Tom Lecky-THompson and Graham Williams. Tom and Graham (subject to confirmation) will open the exhibition on Easter Saturday.

Why is the theatre so important to all ages?

THeatre is not just a place for people to be entertained or for performers to put on shows.

It's an experience for all involved.

And for the performers it can be a lifechanging experience. It can be a way to let your real self shine through even if you are acting as someone completely different on stage.

THe response you receive from the audience is also a great buzz for any performer. And it doesn't matter how old or young you are, you will still enjoy the applause.

Theatre is not just  a place for people to be entertained or for performers to put on shows. It's an experience for all involved.

What can children gain from being introduced to the theatre at a young age as opposed to waiting until they are older?

It's a great way for them to learn the basics of performing, so much so that when they are older these become natural to them. THeir confidence also grows from the moment they start performing and it's great to see that develop the older they get.

Of course, it doesn't matter what age you enter the theatre but those who start when they're younger are able to develop important skills early on.

What ages do you offer classes to?

THere are two stages we offer classes for. THe Early Stages are for ages 4-6, and the Main Stages are for those aged 6-18.

Stagecoach covers a range of theatrical skills. What exactly are these?

We cover the three main skills of theatre with singing, dancing and acting lessons.

How can these skills help children in everyday life as well as shaping who they will become in the future?

Even if our children don't want to pursue a career in the theatre the skills that they learn with us are great for them as people.

Performing will greatly boost their confidence in every kind of situation, from meeting new people, to starting new jobs and just having the confidence to be themselves.

Are these skills put to use in shows for parents to watch?

Yes, every year we put on two performances for family and friends to come and watch. THis is a very special time for all our students as they are able to put all their hard work to good

museum. Amberley is home to the only traditional working print shop in the south of England, where you can have a go at printing your own souvenir certificate to take home. Also, on the Wednesday, you can have a go at wood turning in the wood turners’ workshop. Children will be supervised by skilled volunteers to have a go at turning out small wooden ornaments. THe museum has resident potters on site, where children can have a go with their play with clay activities.

Where most activities are included in the admission price, there may be some small fees for some special activities, and donations are always welcome.

Located 10 minutes from Arundel in the heart of the South Downs National Park, you can discover the south’s working past. Learn about over 150 years of our culture and heritage, and have fun riding around the museum on its historic buses and narrow gauge railway.

Exhibits include historic lime kilns which are scheduled ancient monuments, and original buildings from the days the site was a working chalk quarry. In the BT Connected Earth display children can have fun learning about the history of communications, and have a go on the old telephone switchboards.

THe Electricity hall has a working model of a Tesla Coil, where demonstrations can be held by volunteers when available. With over 40 exhibits to explore, there is so much to see in any weather.

On a visit to the Worthing restaurant, on a chilly, weekday evening, I and my guest were expecting a quiet dining experience but the vibrant restaurant was still busy.

An extensive menu has a wide range of offerings from the traditional pizzas and pasta dishes alongside a range of chicken, fish and steaks.

An added traditional and cosy touch, a waiter explained that some of the dishes are named after the proprietor's family members, from whom he inherited the recipes.

My choice was the penne alla Alfonsina with chicken and peppercorn sauce which was absolutely delicious. THe sauce was rich in flavour

and the chicken was cooked to perfection.

My companion chose the pan-fried sea bass and they commented that it was fresh, light and served with lightly charred, al dente Mediterranean vegetables.

For afters, we both couldn't help but try the white chocolate and pistachio ice cream which was created exclusively for La Campania by the Sussex Ice Cream Company. THe texture is rich and silky and it was simply the perfect end to our meal.

To keep things fresh, every dish is made to order and the menus are constantly changing. THe weekend menu boasts the likes of slow-roasted pork belly with sea salt crackling and red wine jus, and creamy seafood risotto with a subtle hint of tomato.

Visit La Campania with your loved one for a romantic Italian treat or with the family for an enjoyable meal. THey have amazing wine, and even better food and whatever the occasion, your special night will definitely be one to remember.

Community News & Views VOLUNTEERS were out in force on Saturday collecting rubbish in East Ashling.

Over 20 public-spirited volunteers turned out on a sunny morning to spruce up East Ashling.

More than a dozen bags of rubbish were collected - including takeaway wrappers, coffee cups, empty bottles, cans, hubcaps and much more - in just over an hour.

As well as picking up litter, the team cleaned up road signs, the telephone box and the village gates.

THe spring clean was arranged by the East Ashling Association, which organises events and activities in this pretty South Downs village.

A SCAM-BUSTING initiative has stopped more than £2.5m from being defrauded from Sussex residents in just 18 months.

Last month alone has prevented another £188,062 being stolen in the highest monthly total so far.

THe telephone banking protocol is being piloted by Sussex Police with the co-operation of banks and their national body, UK Finance.

PC Bernadette Lawrie, the financial abuse safeguarding officer for Surrey and Sussex Police, said: "THis initial pilot involves Lloyds, Santander, First Direct and the Co-op Bank, but with a view to it being spread both nationally and to the other financial institutions.

"Following a pilot phase, it is intended to extend the initiative to include Surrey Police and it has already been rolled out to Police Scotland."

In one of the latest incidents, an East Sussex man was saved from losing more than £23,000 in a share scam. He was persuaded the phone call he received was illegal after the bank promptly contacted Sussex Police when he tried to withdraw the money.

"THe case shows that potential fraud victims will sometimes contact their banks by phone or online having been asked by cold callers to invest or withdraw funds," such a Sussex Police spokesman.

"But now the bank, if they have concerns about a customer's request to transfer monies and think it might relate to fraud or a scam, can contact the police and it will 'freeze' the funds for 72 hours while officers attempt to engage with the individual and find out if the transaction is fraudulent."

THe protocol is based on the similar successful scheme, the banking protocol, in which counter staff spot and help vulnerable customers who go into branches to make suspicious withdrawals.

A NEW book by a University of Chichester academic which examines links between the pivotal works of renowned 20th century authors and scientists has been nominated for a national award.

Dr Rachel Crossland was shortlisted by the British Society for Literature and Science for its annual prize for her debut monograph Modernist Physics: Waves, Particles, and Relativities in the Writings of Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence.

THe book, published by Oxford University Press, focuses on scientific ideas related to relativity, complementarity and Brownian motion, and examines the ways in which similar ideas appeared in the works of Woolf and Lawrence both before and after their exposure to Einsteinian physics.

Dr Crossland, a senior lecturer in English, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Modernist Physics has been recognised in this way by a society that has been so

THE SOUTH Downs National Park has announced eight immersive South Downs experiences as part of a campaign to inspire international tourists to visit the area.

From kayaking across stunning river valleys, to enjoying world-class English wines, the South Downs National Park has marked English Tourism Week (March 30 to April 7) with the launch of an award-winning guide that celebrates the area’s history, food and drink, and adventure opportunities.

THe printed and online brochure, called the English National Park Experience Collection, has been produced with the support of VisitEngland’s Discover England Fund and alongside eight other national parks in England.

THe collection is now being marketed to travel trade operators as the South Downs and other national parks seek to build awareness among an international audience.

Katharine Beer, who leads sustainable tourism in the South Downs National Park, said: “THe South Downs is a world-class protected landscape in the heart of one of Britain’s busiest regions, but it’s clear there’s still work to be done to let people know we are here.

“We’re really excited to be launching this collection as we look to build the profile of the South Downs among independent and small group travel operators, both overseas and at home in the UK. Each bookable experience has been carefully chosen to harness the growing demand for experiential tourism where visitors want to live, breathe and feel part of the place they are staying. Each experience is supported by a local accommodation provider and it’s very much aimed at supporting the national park’s diverse accommodation offer.

“Our ultimate aim is to open up new markets, help tourism to grow sustainably and to contribute to the vibrancy of our local communities.”

MARITIME welfare charity Sailors' Society is asking churches in Chichester to remember the world's seafarers in a special service this summer.

Congregations around the world will take part in the Sea Sunday services on July 14 in aid of the good cause.

Each year, the Christian charity - which celebrated its 200th birthday last year - asks churchgoers to pray and give thanks for the world's 1.6m seafarers.

Sandra Welch, Sailors’ Society’s deputy chief executive, said: “Whether they know it or not, the people of Chichester rely upon seafarers.”

On average, Sailors' Society chaplains and ship visitors reach out to 1,000 seafarers and their families each day.

Sandra added: “More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea – our clothes, phones, cars – even the bricks that make up our homes.

“All of these goods are brought into the country by seafarers who risk extreme loneliness, dangerous storms and even piracy.

“Holding a Sea Sunday service for Sailors’ Society is a fantastic way of recognising the amazing work seafarers do.”

THe charity has created a variety of free resources for churches.

f Uppark House and Gardens in Late 17th century . Photograph of engraving by L Knyff SITUATED on the hill above the village of South Harting is Uppark. THere has been a house recorded on the site since 1595, but the current house was built in the early 1690s for Lord Ford Grey of Werke.

In 1747, Uppark changed families when Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh and his wife, Sarah, bought it for £19,000. Between 1749 and 1751, the couple went on the Grand Tour of Europe, an aristocratic custom made when men of sufficient means and rank had come

of age, collecting many artworks, furniture and tapestries for refurbishing the house.

THey commissioned an extensive remodel of the property with architect James Paine and redecorated the property between the 1750s - 1770s.

In 1774, their son, Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh, inherited the property. He also went on a Grand Tour, collecting French furniture, clocks and china. He added gardens and a portico to the property. Between

In 1810, architect Humphry Repton, an acquaintance of Sir Harry, produced proposals for alterations at Uppark.

These included moving the main entrance from the east to the north side with a new Portland stone portico.

1780 and 1781, Emma Hart, the future Lady Hamilton, originally from the village of South Harting, lived on the estate. She is reputed to have danced naked on the dining table there during one of Sir Harry’s parties.

In 1810, architect Humphry Repton, an acquaintance of Sir Harry, produced proposals for alterations at Uppark. THese included moving the main entrance from the east to the north side with a new Portland stone portico. THe staircase hall and dining room were remodelled and the saloon painted white and gold. THe gardens were also redesigned by Repton and ‘Capability’ Brown, and these gardens remain today.

In 1825, the elderly Sir Harry married Mary Ann Bullock, his dairy maid, who was 50 years his junior. Mary ensured the house was updated and suitable renovations took place.

Soon after, Mary Ann’s sister, Frances, joined them at Uppark. THey stayed in the house after Sir Harry died in 1846. Mary Ann died in 1874 and Frances inherited the house and took the surname Fetherstonhaugh.

In 1880, Frances hired Sarah Wells as housekeeper. Sarah’s youngest son, Herbert George, stayed with her at Uppark and spent his days exploring the grounds and using the library. Herbert George grew up to be celebrated science fiction writer H.G Wells and later wrote about his memories of his time at Uppark. His mother was dismissed from her position in 1892.

After Frances’ death in 1895, Colonel the Hon. Keith Turnour inherited the property and took the Fetherstonhaugh surname before the property passed to Admiral the Hon. Sir Herbert Meade in 1930. He adopted

the surname Meade-Fetherstonhaugh. His wife, Lady Margaret Meade-Fetherstonhaugh, undertook careful preservation of the textiles, decoration and furnishings of Uppark. In 1954, Admiral Meade-Fetherstonhaugh and his son, Richard, gifted Uppark to the National Trust to manage and the family remained in the house as tenants. THe trust continued the family’s preservation policy with as little change as possible.

In August, 1989, a serious fire broke out, caused by a workman's blowtorch while repairing lead flashing on the roof. It was decided to try to rescue as much of the contents of the house as possible and items were carried out of the burning building by staff, volunteers and members of the public.

However, some rooms had to be abandoned due to the fire’s progress.

THe upper floors of the house, including the Meade-Fetherstonhaugh’s apartments and contents, collapsed into the ground levels and were destroyed. Despite the damage, many items, mainly from the lower floors, were salvaged, catalogued and repaired.

THere were extensive discussions about the future of Uppark. Some wanted the site to be demolished, others wanted it to be modernised. However, it was decided to restore the house to its former state. Uppark re-opened to the public in 1995, after six years of restoration.

In 2018 there was an exhibition at the house on the five women who helped shape Uppark’s history - these being the aforementioned Lady Sarah Fetherstonhaugh, Emma Hart, Mary Ann Bullock, Sarah Wells and Lady Margaret Fetherstonhaugh.

Horse Racing THEY'RE under starters' orders - and they're off...

After a winter away, the flat horse racing season has got off to a flying start - and the countdown underway to Goodwood's first meet of the season just one month away.

THe Opening Saturday race meeting takes place on May 4, with tickets for the event flying out the stalls.

THose at the world's most beautiful racecourse promise a day for all the family, with people of all ages getting a special taste of the 'sport of kings'.

Darts AS the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League nears its end, the Captains & Secretaries knockout took place at the Newtown Social Club, with 14 teams taking part.

A change in the format this year saw the team leaders play as a duo, with the captains playing each other, then the secretaries playing each other, and a sudden-death one leg pairs game played if needed to find the winner.

After some good scoring along the way, the final pitched Peter Hall & Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) against Pat O'Hara & Gary Blackwood (Legends).

Blackwood eased to a 3-0 win over all in the captains match before Robinson evened things up with the same score in the secretaries clash.

THat took it to a shootout with the Legends pair making the faster start, hitting solid scores to leave 183.

O'Hara hit two treble 19s and a single 19, leaving 50 for Blackwood but he failed to hit what he wanted.

O'Hara then followed suit, allowing their opponents time to seize the opportunity. Robinson then hit double 5 for the leg, and the match win, taking the Benevolent Captains & Secretaries title for the Chichester Snooker Club.

Blues denied by last kick of game ONE point was all they needed, five points were in their grasp, but in the end Chichester RFC had to settle for just the two as they came out on the wrong side of a 34-35 thriller.

Blues flew out to a 31-13 lead over Cobham at Oaklands Park as their dominance in the pack saw them cross for a series of wellworked tries.

But, after the visitors mounted a comeback, Chi were cruelly denied a victory as the Surrey side slotted home the winning points with the last kick of the match from a penalty.

All was not lost for Scott Ashley's side as the losing bonus point, combined with an additional point for scoring four tries, secured Chi's London One South status for another season.

With two matches of the season, Blues can now focus on building on their current position of ninth, with a top half finish in the 14 team division still within their grasp.

Tomorrow sees Chi head to second-place Sevenoaks (2.30pm) hoping to spring a surprise while having a say in one of the tightest promotion races in recent years.

Oaks are just one point behind leaders Medway and level on points with third-place

Camberley so cannot afford any slip-ups.

THey beat Chi 28-3 at Oaklands Park in the reverse fixture just before Christmas.

Paddy Burnett also scored his 26th of the season, level with Lee Balchin for the most ever for the club.

He will be looking to beat the record tomorrow when Bognor play fifth-place Millbrook in what will be a competitive end to another successful season for the club's premier side.

Top half is the target for Sids SIDLESHAM will look to pop league leaders Alfold's bubble while promoting their own top half credentials.

Steve Bailey has had quite the impact at the Recreation Ground and will hope to finish his first season at the club by ending in the top eight of the 17 team SCFL Division One. With just a month of the season to go, the Sids - on their return to step six -are in that very spot with just three matches of the season to play.

Sids moved up into the top half after a battling 1-0 win over Midhurst & Easebourne at the weekend, David Rough hitting home in the second half.

THose three points ended a run of three matches without a win for the Rec Ground side.

It also gives Bailey's side a one point advantage over Seaford and Wick, who are ninth and tenth respectively but both have a game in hand.

THat makes the match tomorrow at Alfold all the more important, especially considering the Surrey side are just one point clear at the

top of the table.

Having last tasted defeat in the league back at the start of October, Sids will need to be at their battling best to keep an attack which has netted nearly three goals a game at bay.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey will be looking to keep up the pressure on the top four by claiming three points at struggling Oakwood tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side had a well-earned rest last weekend, after stringing together a run of impressive results which has propelled them up to fifth.

THey have already faced Oakwood twice this campaign, beating them 2-0 in the reverse league fixture as well as a 7-0 hammering in the league cup.

CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is urging his side to enjoy the last four games of the season after exceeding every expectation so far.

THe Oaklands Park side have experienced a tricky few weeks, losing four of their last six in the FA Women's National Southern Premier.

THat run has seen Chi drop to third, with a risk of the club fading without trace after an excellent start to the season.

But City showed what they are made of last weekend with a pulsating 3-2 victory at previously undefeated leaders Coventry United.

Molly Clark proved to be match winner, scoring two and setting up the other to close the gap on second-place Cardiff to a point.

City now have a week off before welcoming Watford to Oaklands Park on April 14 (2pm) ahead of the Sussex County Women’s Challenge Cup final against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 18.

Speaking after the victory against Cov in Daventry, Smith said: "It shows that we can beat anyone in this league.

"We have had slip ups in the last few weeks.

We had targets set out at the start of the

season by me and my philosophy and club and its philosophy and we are exceeding expectations.

"THis is all about now and we have Watford, QPR, then Gillingham and a cup final against Brighton to come so I just [want the players to]enjoy the games.

"It's nice to have four games left of a very good season where we have already exceeded expectations. I'd say to the players just enjoy it, smile and hopefully win all four matches."

It was United who went ahead though through Nicki Miles but Clark struck twice from dead balls before the break.

Another Clark free-kick was turned in by Kim Stenning and despite Amy Watham firing a second Coventry goal in from range, Chi held on to take the three points.

Smith said: "Molly's goals were fantastic.

THe first one started ten yards wide of the goal and went in.

"But we know that she can score goals but she showed that out of possession she's willing to work hard.

"She was getting picked on, tackled, knocked off the ball but then getting up and doing her thing."

Make or break week ahead for battling Bognor

AFTER nearly 50 games, it all comes down to this - two crunch games in the space of four days which could define the season.

Win both and Rocks will have a playoff spot in their sights and a cup final at a Premier League ground to look forward to.

Taste defeat and manager Jack Pearce will be drawing a line under the whole season, before setting his sights on improving on and off the pitch for the next campaign.

After starting the season so brightly, it seems strange for Rocks to be heading into this crucial stage of the year on such a downer.

Injuries to key personnel, the departure of on-loan striker Dan Smith and a poor run of form which saw the club go a month without a league win has seen Bognor fall down to ninth in the Bostik Premier.

By hook or by crook, a challenge for the top five is still possible but they must start getting results at home, starting tomorrow when they welcome 14th-place Brightlingsea to Nyewood Lane.

THen it is on to the rearranged Sussex Senior Cup semi final against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday with the winners facing Burgess Hill in the final at THe Amex next month.

A victory last time out in north London ensures Rocks head into the week with confidence on the up.

It took a red card for the hosts, a determined defensive display and two second half Mason Walsh goals to seal the win.

But the result kept Rocks in touch with the race for the playoffs and, perhaps crucially, ended a run of six matches without a victory.

First team coach Robbie Blake said: "Anytime you get three points it is always a good performance whether you play good or play poor. "[Winning] it's the most important thing and we haven't had that in the last six games.

"It's nice just to get a win, I'm pleased for the boys, we made hard work of it but it's three points."

Blake was also full of praise for returning keeper, Dan Lincoln, who was injured in a challenge from the Wingate striker.

While the opponent saw red, the Rocks number one had crimson coming out of his nose.

He battled on and helped the club to a first clean sheet in six weeks.

With Walsh keeping his cool at the other end, Bognor emerged worthy winners.

Pagham's poor run continues PAGHAM will be looking to pull together as the club look to draw a line under one of the poorest runs in the side's recent history and end a five match winless streak.

Past years have seen the Lions going into the final month of the season with silverware in their sights.

Instead, the Nyetimber Lane side will be hoping the 2018/19 season finishes sooner rather than later A poor winter was followed by a dreadful spring, with a run of eight defeats in ten sending Pagham plummeting into the bottom half of the SCFL Premier table.

Lions will look to return to their fighting best tomorrow when they play third-bottom Little Common at Eastbourne United's THe Oval ground tomorrow (3pm).

Pagham's plight started just after Christmas when injuries ruled out a number of key players and two of their top scorers George Gaskin and Callum Overton - left for other clubs.

Scoring has been an issue with the club netting just seven goals in the last ten league matches.

THe problems have been clear to see as a young side looking ahead to a positive campaign next season show plenty of endeavour but struggle to get themselves on the scoresheet.

THat trend continued last weekend when a spirited Lions side pushed the fifth-placed

Tigers all the way in a 2-0 defeat.

Despite losing Ryan Davidson towards the end of the first half for two bookable offences, Pagham had a number of chances to take the lead. Instead it was the visitors who broke the deadlock, netting twice in the last ten minutes to steal all three points.

If there's a silver lining to the dark cloud

hanging over Nyetimber Lane it is that the club's opponents tomorrow are on an equally bad run of form.

Common too have lost their last five in a row. But their struggles go back beyond Christmas with the club winning just once in 22 league matches, which leaves them fighting relegation.

'There's a real sense of frustration at the club'

THINGS change quickly at non-league level.

If I was writing this after the Leatherhead match I would be much more downbeat as it was one of the worst games we've seen in a long time.

For a while it looked like the game at Wingate would be going the same way.

THey took charge and, thanks in part to the sending off, as the game progressed we got better and better, creating more and our defence seemed to grow in confidence.

It was a clear foul on Dan, which could have seriously injured him. It was lucky he wasn't as we didn't have a sub keeper on the bench.

From that moment onwards we started to move the ball around a bit more and then Mason proved to be the difference with his two goals.

It means that we still have a very slim outside chance of making the playoff.

We can get to a maximum of 70 points but we will still need others to lose for that to happen.

You would have thought that the mood on the coach back afterwards was upbeat but there is a real sense of frustration around the club.

Injuries have hurt us and most fans were saying that without them we would be up in the top six.

A number are also calling for younger players like Ollie Humphries and Liam Brady to be blooded so that we can get prepared for next season.

But the general feeling is that even if we make the playoffs we will struggle given the injuries that we have.

THe management are clearly frustrated too. Robbie was struggling to hide it at half time when it was still 0-0.

He was speaking to fans before the match and clearly wants us to be doing better.

My worry though is making

sure we keep certain players for next year - players like Jimmy Muitt and Doug Tuck, who are excellent as this level.

At the moment, Mason is certainly proving his worth too and he's really grabbing the headlines.

He's become a real fan favourite. A lot of the supporters are saying how he has been a constant workhorse in the team, running down lost causes at the top of the pitch.

Perhaps he doesn't do as much defending as some would like but he frightens the opposition when he gets the ball and, as he showed on Saturday, is deadly when given chances.

One thing that I would like to see is moving him more central into a number 10 type role as it would give Brad more support up top, something that he doesn't always seem to be getting at the moment.

Tomorrow is the start of what is a tough run in, especially as our home form has been a bit up and down all season.

Brightlingsea Regent beat us 3-0 up there earlier in the year.

I didn't make it up to that one and it was probably good [for me!] that I didn't as it was a dreadful midweek trip where fans arrived late after a five hour coach journey.

After such a poor performance we owe them one but we need to get on the front foot.

Our downfall this year has been making too many silly errors. We can do better.

If we are to have any chance of making the playoffs then we have to win every single game.

I hope the win at Wingate lifted the side and the supporters are given something to cheer about.

THen there's the semi final against the Albion at Lancing.

How nice it would be to finish the season at THe Amex against Burgess Hill in a final.

'It'll be tough but Rocks can still make playoffs' BOGNOR first team coach Robbie Blake is urging the club to take one game at a time as the Rocks' distant playoff hopes remain well and truly alive.

With five matches to play, the Nyewood Lane side sit ninth in the Bostik Premier, six points off the top five.

A 2-0 win against the ten men of Wingate & Finchley last weekend - the club's first victory in six league matches has certainly lifted the mood in the Rocks camp.

But with matches running out fast, Bognor will need to keep that winning feeling going at home against Brightlingsea Regent tomorrow (3pm).

Claim three points and an unlikely place in the playoffs continues to be a possibility.

Speaking after the Wingate win, Blake said: "It's certainly by no means an easy assignment but if we win tomorrow we'll see what happens.

"We have to take one game at a time, you never know what will happen .

"We have to keep going - keep going for ourselves, the pride of the Bognor Regis Football

Club and the supporters."

Blake and manager Jack Pearce will be looking for their young side to give fans something to cheer against the Essex side tomorrow.

Regular visitors to the Nye Camp this season will know how much the club have struggled in front of their own supporters.

Of the 18 home league games so far, Bognor have won seven and drawn five - the worst home record of any club in the top half of the Bostik Premier which has hampered any hopes of an immediate return to step two of the non-league pyramid.

Blake said: "It will be a tough game, every game in this league is tough.

"We have to respect the opposition and see what happens but hopefully [the Wingate win] will give us some confidence moving forward."
