THe news comes not long after

councillors agreed to raise council tax this year by another £5 for Chichester residents.

THe district council was able to increase council tax in 2018-2019 by either two per cent (which would generate additional income of approximately £156,000), or take up the option of implementing a £5 increase (generating a further £104,000 of income).

A spokesman for Chichester District Council said: “We collect over 98 per cent

"Where a customer has failed to pay after being sent at least two reminder notices, we have a duty to take further action to recover the debt.

City housing 'not fit for purpose'

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A DISTRICT councillor has described housing problems in the city as 'broken and not fit for purpose'.

Cllr Richard Plowman said problems began with 2012 government planning policies, which had 'a presumption for sustainable development'.

THe local plan states that the district needs to accommodate 6,000 more houses.

Cllr Plowman said: "Local authority planners like large strategic sites as small sites do not generate the money for infrastructure so White House Farm to the west of Chichester, with 1,600 houses, and Tangmere, with up to 2,000, were to provide the bulk of the housing numbers and maintain that other government magical number of having enough sites to generate a five-year housing supply.

"Fall below that number and it is a 'free for all' for the developers to build where they like. Both these large strategic sites are delayed and housing delivery from them is rapidly going further and further away.

"One housing inspector has already challenged the five-year supply for Chichester due to the slowness of delivery of the houses from these strategic sites.

"Currently, infrastructure follows the development, triggered often by the number of houses sold, such as you can have a playground when 200 houses are sold. It is amazing how the sales

figure seems to stick at 199 or under.

Meanwhile, families with children living in the development have no facilities in some cases for four or more years.

"What does this mean for Chichester?

Unfortunately, Chichester is generally a low wage area but house prices are very high. House prices are 11.5 times the average salary.

"THe definition of an affordable house used to be 80 per cent of the market rate which really means there is no such thing as an affordable house in Chichester. Police seek driver who fled scene and may have city link POLICE are trying to find the driver of a distinctive car who fled the scene of a crash in Wick, Littlehampton.

THe vehicle has activated several automatic number plate recognition cameras in Chichester and Bognor Regis in recent weeks, and officers believe the driver could be local to this area.

THe Porsche Boxster S was involved in a collision with a black Kia Cee’d on the A259, close to the junction with New Courtwick Lane, about 6am on Tuesday.

No injuries were reported. However, police are keen to identify the driver of the Porsche, which is uninsured and notified as off-road.

THe driver is described as a man of

mixed race, about 5ft 7in, with short afro-style hair.

Total Laundry, in Phoenix Business Centre, Chichester is joining the Against Breast Cancer bra recycling scheme that benefits women everywhere. THe scheme provides an eye-catching pink bra bank where unwanted bras can be deposited.

Recycling bras prevents them from being dumped into UK landfills each year and the charity receives £700 from every tonne donated. THe scheme directs

textiles to Africa where they help create local commerce and the scheme is also helping to create jobs in the UK. Bernadette Jones, chief executive of Against Breast Cancer, said: "We have received very positive feedback from retailers adopting the scheme and great warmth from the public for an idea that helps the environment as well as charity."

Funds received from the scheme are put to work by the charity to support the research they are conducting into breast cancer, now affecting one in eight women in the UK. Sarah Lancaster, managing director of Total Laundry said: "We are an ethical laundry, we were one of the first

laundries in the area to use an ecofriendly, aqueous technique to clean ‘dry clean only’ garments.

"We recycle hangers and have considerably reduced our single use plastic and use biodegradable bags where possible.

"Having a Bra Bank is a continuation of our recycling ethos. We all have bras that we have bought, thinking they would make us look great and find when we get home they don’t.

“So, instead of stuffing them back in the drawer or in the dustbin, bring them to us and help make them useful again!”

"Forty three customers cleared their arrears in full before the court hearing, and as a result, these accounts were manually withdrawn from the court list. A further 44 customers paid the full balance of their arrears directly to the council and these accounts were withdrawn automatically by our council tax system.

"Of the 256 cases summonsed to court this included 66 accounts which are paid jointly. Where council tax liability is shared, for example partners living at the same property, each person must receive a summons.

"THis makes the number of liability orders requested seem more. THe number of customers who paid their account in full before court was 77.

"THis includes 43 who had their summons to court withdrawn after contacting us to clear their arrears in full. THose unable to pay their arrears in full before the court hearing are given the opportunity to enter into a monthly payment arrangement, subject to the liability order being granted."

THe liability orders would largely be for outstanding council tax for the

period April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019.

A few orders would also have covered debts from 2017/18. As customers now have the ability to pay over 12 months rather than ten, this means slightly more customers are taking longer to go through the recovery system.

A Chichester Post reader has criticised the rise. John Robinson said: "Am I the only protester in the whole of West Sussex who is disgusted with the rate increases this year?

"An unprecedented 5.7 per cent increase on last year. THe police precept has risen an unbelievable 14.5 per cent, the highest ever.

"My council tax is the highest bill I pay. At this rate we will all be bankrupt in 10 years. I don’t know any other organisation in the UK with price hikes at this level."

West Sussex County Council agreed a council tax increase of 1.95 per cent plus an additional two per cent to fund adult social care.

It totals 3.95 per cent – the equivalent of an extra 92 pence per week for the average Band D household.

THe Chichester Post contacted Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice who were unable to comment at the time.

` Selsey burglary POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a burglary in Selsey.

Between 6am and 10am on THursday, March 14, a house in James Street was broken into and a small safe containing personal property was stolen.

Detective Constable Jill Stevens said: "We are particularly keen to speak to a woman who was walking in the road with a young child that morning, but anyone who saw anything suspicious or who has any information is asked to contact us online or by calling 101, quoting serial 403 of 14/03.

"You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and after being interviewed was released under investigation.

` Death of baby

A MIDHURST man has been convicted of causing the death of his baby son.

Christopher Barnes, 28, a heating engineer, of Barlavington Way, Midhurst, was convicted by a majority verdict by a jury at Lewes Crown Court on Monday, after a ten-day trial, of manslaughter and of causing grievous bodily harm to his son, Harry, who was just ten weeks old when he died on June 25, 2017.

Barnes was given court bail and will be sentenced today (Friday) and a serious case review will be carried out by West Sussex Safeguarding Children's Board.

Police target cars anti-social driving

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk POLICE in Arun and Chichester are 'robustly' tackling issues of anti-social driving in Selsey and Bracklesham following targeted police activity.

PCs and PCSOs were joined by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency after a number of reports regarding antisocial driving.

THroughout the day, vehicles or interest were stopped and searched, resulting in two vehicles being seized for having either no tax or insurance.

Officers also conducted foot patrols in the area and discussed issues with residents.

Sgt Ian Cheeman, from the Arun and Chichester Prevention Team, said: “We have been listening to the community regarding anti-social driving and the concerns surrounding this.

"We want to reassure the public that we are tackling these issues and will deal robustly with issues that have the greatest impact on the community.

“We do not want any members of the community or those in rural areas to feel isolated from us and this was a great way of engaging with the public and listening to concerns they may have.

“THe day not only allowed us to work with our partners to target vehicles of interest that did not have the correct paperwork or may have been linked to crime, but to speak with local residents and build on community trust.

“We encourage anyone to report a crime to us without delay to ensure any line of enquiry is investigated.”

DVSA enforcement manager Stuart Carter said: "THe agency's priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles.

“Joint-working with Sussex Police in this way is a great use of public resources.

By working together, we’ll help ensure that we take unsafe drivers and vehicles off of Sussex’s roads.”

Anti-social driving can be reported to Operation Crackdown.

Free school retain 'Good' report CHILDREN and staff at Chichester Free School are celebrating the news that it has retained its coveted 'Good' Ofsted report and appointed a new principal in the same week.

Louise New will replace interim principal, Jenny Clough, in September.

Mrs New joined the school in 2014 as head of English before becoming assistant head in 2016 and completing her NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship) over this last academic year.

Mrs Clough said: "THe governors’ interview panel was hugely impressed with Louise’s knowledge, commitment and inspiring vision for the school and was unanimous in its decision to appoint her as principal.

Public responds in hundreds over city-wide parking plan

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE than 500 responses have already been received in the Chichester onstreet parking consultation being run by the county council.

City-wide proposals for tackling growing pressure on on-street parking have been put forward and the consultation went live on March 1.

THree exhibitions have already been held, but one more is planned and will be held on Monday, March 25, from 2pm to 8pm, at Swanfield Community Centre, Swanfield Drive, Swanfield Park, Chichester, PO19 6GH. At a meeting at County Hall in February, Chichester councillors were shown a presentation for the scheme which the council plans to test in Chichester.

THe ideas include making roads in the city and district restricted for parking, either by permits or yellow lines.

In 2018, county councillors considered the road space audit and agreed that one of its recommendations, a proposal for a parking management plan, should be prepared and shared with the public.

THe parking plan would be a method of controlling and managing on-street parking across the entire city and is similar in design and operation to the county council’s controlled parking zones, of which there are seven currently operating, in Billingshurst, Bognor Regis,

Chichester, Crawley, East Grinstead, Horsham and Worthing.

THe proposed parking plan covers the entire city because the county council would like to be proactive and try to deal with existing and future parking issues in one go.

Colin Hicks, chairman of Chichester BID, said: “I think many residents will welcome this proposal because it will control on-street parking across the city.

"Our main concern is how this will affect the many people who come to work in the city.

"Under these plans, the streets that are available for parking in the day will carry a charge, which could create a further burden on businesses at a very difficult time.

"It might mean they will need to compensate their staff for charges or alternatively staff will need to find the money for this from their wages.

"We have a lot of retail in the city with workers on quite low incomes and we wouldn’t want to see further pressure put on retail and hospitality businesses."

Details of the plan, designs, maps and frequently asked questions are also available via the council’s online consultation hub and include a questionnaire to aid responses.

` Police reports OVER THE week from Monday, March 11, to Sunday, March 17, there were several reports made to police in the Chichester area.

In Cawley Road, Chichester, on Monday, March 11, a property was broken into. Nothing was reported stolen but damage was caused to the door. Entry was via the neighbouring property which had also been broken into. Serial 1086 of 11/03.

Overnight on Tuesday, March 12, in Hillside, West Dean, a workshop was entered and a quantity of tools stolen. Serial 0264 of 13/03.

Overnight on Wednesday, March 13, a building site in Lavant Road, Chichester, was broken into and a large quantity of tools stolen. A portacabin was also broken into and a Whacker Neuson with 120 Gx motor was stolen. Serial 0213 of 14/03.

In Cakeham Road, West Wittering, overnight on Wednesday, March 13, both front and rear number plates were stolen from a vehicle. Serial 0124 of 16/03.

Overnight on Wednesday, March 13, a van was broken into and a large quantity of tools stolen in Littlecote, Petworth. Serial 0168 of 14/03.

In Drayton Lane, Drayton, overnight on Friday, March 15, a workshop was broken into and hand tools and a chainsaw stolen. A shed was also broken into and gardening tools were stolen. Serial 0324 of 16/03.

On Friday, March 15, during the morning, an insecure vehicle was entered and a purse stolen in Hubble Close, Selsey. Serial 0598 of 15/03.

f Last year Roman Week was another huge success

City's Roman week is nominated AN ANNUAL community event led by THe Novium Museum in Chichester has been shortlisted for a national award.

Chichester Roman Week 2018 has been recognised by the Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence, Limited Budget Project of the Year.

THe prestigious awards are considered to be the Oscars of the museum world.

Chichester Roman Week takes place every May half term and celebrates Chichester’s rich Roman heritage with a programme of events designed to engage visitors of all ages, taking place in and around the district.

Last year’s event introduced a large-scale re-enactment in Priory Park which attracted more than 2,000 visitors throughout the day.

Lottery funds help the city

As part of the 25th birthday celebrations, they are calling for local projects to enter the National Lottery Awards - with the opportunity of winning a £10,000 prize and to appear on a BBC One show.

A wide variety of local projects have received National Lottery funding over the last 25 years, including major funding to Chichester Festival THeatre to renovate and improve its facilities.

THe sum of £370,000 was awarded to charity, Canine Partners to build their southern training centre in Midhurst and around £9,900 was given to Chichester District Foodbank to improve the distribution of food alongside other support for people.

National Lottery promotions unit director Jonathan Tuchner said: "Since its launch 25 years ago, THe National Lottery has changed lives the length and breadth of the UK. As I walk around my neighbourhood, I'm proud of how many projects and organisations the National Lottery has funded.

"It's all down to local people who

choose to do incredible things with National Lottery funding, changing their communities for the better, step by step."

THe Information Shop for Young People in the city centre has also recently been awarded £10,000 funding which will ensure the continued provision of mental wellbeing support for young people in the area.

Based in Little London, the shop is an independent charity offering free and non-time-limited emotional support and counselling services to young people aged 13-25.

THe project sees an average of 63 young people through its doors each week. THey seek support for a wide variety of issues such as finding work, relationships, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm and depression.

THe funding will help contribute towards improving facilities, lowering waiting times for counselling and continuing to ensure young people have a space to talk openly in a safe and confidential setting.

Melissa Durbin, project manager, said: "THis is fantastic news for the project and will mean that more vulnerable young people will be able to access our service for immediate and ongoing support."

Retail giant set to move to high street in city centre in summer THE CITY centre is set to see a big retailer move into a vacant shop on the high street.

THe Co-op will serve up its newest food store in Chichester following a £650,000 investment.

THe new store, located in East Street, is due to open in the summer, and will provide 16 full and part-time jobs.

It will offer a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy foods, meal ideas, ready-to-go hot food, award-winning wines and essentials, along with an in-store bakery, a Costa Coffee machine, self-scan tills and paypoint.

THe store will operate a membership scheme, customers receiving a five per cent reward on buying own-brand products and services, with the Coop donating a further one per cent to good causes.

Causes in the area currently benefiting include Southbourne Lions Club, Rotary Club Harbour

Community Services Team, and THe Apuldram Centre – with Co-op members able to choose which group they would like to support online.

Nigel Wicks, Co-op area manager, added: "THe Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum, and our ambition is to ensure the store is a local hub for people living in the area.

"We also want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op.

"Our members make a difference locally and simply by swiping their membership card when they shop with us they are raising much needed funding for organisations who contribute to improving local life."

THere will be offers and promotions in and around the store to mark its launch, and students in the area holding an NUS card will receive a 10 per cent discount at the Co-op to support them during their studies.

` New city Lidl WORK WILL start this week to deliver a new Lidl supermarket on land at Barnfield Drive, Chichester.

THe two-acre site, off Westhampnett Road, is owned by Chichester District Council and is being developed in conjunction with Brookhouse Group Limited.

THe new 23,000 square feet/2,136 metre square store will replace Lidl’s existing, smaller store in Portfield Way. It will be accessed via a new roundabout, which will be built close to the junction with Church Road. THe roundabout will also provide access for future phases of development on the remainder of the Barnfield site, as well as unlocking further residential development off Church Road.

Chichester deputy chief executive Paul Over said: “We are really excited to see this next stage of the development proceed. It continues the success of the previous phase in Barnfield Drive and will create many new jobs.

“THe development also brings this unused land back into use and will help generate vital income for the district council. THis will go into protecting frontline services for residents across the district and ensure financial stability for the council.”

THe store is expected to take around 10 months to complete, with the aim of opening in early 2020. Significant road improvements will also be carried out to enhance accessibility and traffic flow in the area, with efforts made to minimise local disruption.

Residents complain over the disruption for bathing water

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SOUTHERN WATER has apologised for disruption to its customers in Selsey after several complaints have been made over noise and vibrations.

THe water company is investing up to £1.3 million in improvements over the next couple of years to improve bathing water quality at Selsey.

Detailed investigations have already been carried out by Southern Water at Selsey, including environmental analysis, testing and modelling, water quality sampling and DNA testing, asset surveys, surface water assessments and watercourse walkovers.

In their document 'Our Bathing Water Enhancement Programme - proposals for Selsey' Southern Water says it has found that releases from the overflows at East Beach Road and East Beach may have on occasion contributed to Selsey's reduced bathing water quality.

THere was pollution from misconnected properties in the surface water drains and high levels of faecal pollution from dogs and sea birds were found at East Beach Pond, which drains into the bathing waters.

Senior project manager Chris O'Grady said: "We apologise to all customers who have been affected by our work to install a new, deep sewer in Beach Road, Selsey.

We appreciate how intrusive our work

can be and we're sorry for the disruption it's causing to closely affected customers, but it's an important part of our £2million investment programme to help improve the bathing waters at Selsey.

"Having completed two thirds of the project, we were alerted to potential issues as a result of vibrations. We immediately stopped work in order to carry out investigations, including taking advice from, and on-site monitoring, by vibration experts.

"We are now trialling a new way of working in order minimise vibrations and disturbance to customers and we will only continue with the work once our monitoring has shown we are working within appropriate guidelines.

"We've worked closely with customers and the local council throughout and will continue to do so until this complex but essential sewer installation is complete.

"We've also arranged for alternative parking for residents affected by this final

phase of work, who will be able to park free of charge at the nearby East Beach car park. A local church has also kindly agreed to make a number of parking spaces available for use by affected residents.

"Although it will not take away the disruption caused by our work, we, along with our partner MGJV, will be making a £2,000 contribution to a local charity in recognition of the inconvenience our improvement work has caused to the community."

Charity shop in South Street gets a makeover and opens on Saturday

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A POPULAR charity shop in the city centre re-opened its doors on Saturday at 10am after being closed for few weeks for refurbishment.

THe St Wilfrid's store in South Street helps raise vital funds for the hospice and staff, volunteers and guests enjoyed a glass of bubbly to toast the opening.

Hospice trustee Julian Clayton joined chief executive Alison Moorey and Colin Hicks, chairman of Chichester BID, to officially cut the ribbon to launch the shop.

Julian said: "THe first 32 customers in the store each received a goodie bag to thank them for their ongoing support, one goodie bag for each of the 32 years St Wilfrid’s has been supporting the local community with end of life care."

THe content for these goodie bags was donated by Boots (Clarins and Lancome), Molton Brown, Montezuma’s, Crate and Apple, Glorious Spa, Nuffield Health and Fitness and Costa - West Street. THe hanging basket in the window display was donated by Brick Kiln Garden Centre.

Customers were welcomed through the door once the ribbon was cut and greeted with bubbles and cake.

"THis shop has raised money to support the care we give for over ten years now.

THis shop along with all our others, plays a vital and varied role by supporting the work of St Wilfrid's.

"THis year, we need to raise over £7.5 million to deliver our services. We only get 16 per cent of that from the NHS and around a third of it will come from our shops."

Colin Hicks said: "I think it's a really interesting development in the charity shops to really want to improve the quality and presentation.

"About four per cent of the shops in the high street are charity shops and Chichester is no exception. We have 13 charity shops out of 318 active units.

It's not a big percentage but they do provide potential for us at the BID for keeping shops open so there are less empty because of the charity movement.

"THis is a very generous nation and there is a very strong movement in Chichester to support charities.

THanks to sponsor Draper’s Yard, customers were also invited to guess how much the window display is worth in pounds and pence in the ‘Win the window’ competition running until March 30. Entry is free and if your guess is right, you win the display.

Shop manager Jemma Billington was delighted with the response to the shop, and highlighted the ecofriendly aspects of shopping at St Wilfrid’s.

She said: "Last year alone we recycled nearly 120,000 kilos of textile waste, raising around £45,000.

Clothing and other second-hand items are a way to show who we are, what we feel, what we believe. Clothes can tell a story. If you wear something once then throw it in the bin, it hasn’t had a story. Our customers appreciate there’s life in these things.”

THe shop is located at 39-40 South Street Chichester PO19 1EL and is open six days a week from 9am to 5pm (closed Sundays).

THeresa Haughey was visiting Chichester from Northern Ireland.

She said: "We came here last year and said next time we returned we would bring an empty suitcase with us because of the amount of lovely charity shops.

"We love Chichester, people are so friendly we just love it here. We would buy a house here tomorrow, even after living in Boston, Northern Ireland and London.

"I have a wedding to attend in April and last night when I was passing, I saw the pink dress and as soon as the shop opened I grabbed it. I found a lovely hat and shoes to match too.

"THis is absolutely fabulous. It looks like a little designer store as opposed to a charity shop. I'm all about recycle and upcycle and I very rarely buy new now ever.

"THe last time I was here, my niece died of cervical cancer and she was 30 years of age. For us, anything that helps hospices is a worthwhile cause."

Alison Moorey said: "Over the last months, we have been looking at options to give the shop an excellent new look and refresh to make it more attractive to customers so we can sell more of the wonderful donated goods.

"It's been a fantastic process for the team to be involved in this to see the space that we have got being used so

` Climate calls ENVIRONMENTAL, community and faith organisations across Surrey and West Sussex are joining forces for the first time in a campaign to urge their county councils to step up action on climate change by declaring a ‘climate emergency’.

THe campaign aims to show the breadth of support for more decisive action by councils in addressing the urgent threat posed by climate change.

“Declaring a climate emergency is a way of shifting climate change to the centre of council agendas, and showing leadership,” according to retired GP, Dr Sally Barnard, who is helping co-ordinate the campaign.

“It means recognising publicly that ‘business as usual’ is not going to be good enough to tackle this massive global challenge.”

THe West Sussex motion comes up for debate on April 5, and was put forward by Cllr Michael Jones, Labour member for Southgate and Gossops Green.

Underlining the severity of the climate threat, it states that ‘West Sussex is already suffering from flooding problems, and a significant proportion of its population and a large number of its settlements are based in coastal areas which would potentially be devastated by a rise in sea levels caused by continual global warming.’

THe campaign to support these climate emergency declarations is being led by the South East Climate Alliance, and new umbrella group of more than 20 local environmental, community and faith groups from across the region.

Community unveil new dome

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SPECIAL installation was unveilled on Wednesday in the grounds of Bracklesham Barn.

THe community group Heartspace, based in Bracklesham, organised the installation of a willow dome which was unveiled on Wednesday.

THe willow dome was built during the course of the day, and will remain as a permanent feature. THe installation was carried out by local couple Ganesh and Elaine.

THe structure is made out of living, growing willow, which will create a space for everyone to use - somewhere to relax on a hot summer's day, have a picnic with family and friends or enjoy the space with a club or society.

Lots of members of the community were invited to come and see it being erected, learn a new skill such as how to maintain its shape or make charcoal from the cuttings.

THere was also a display of art and craft work by Heartspace’s members, accompanied by singing by Dawn Gracie.

Heartspace organiser Katrina Wakefield said: "THe willow dome is a space made wholly from living willow. It will grow and mature over time, creating a green space for everyone to enjoy.

We hope that everyone will come and enjoy the space and use it for play, for contemplation or to sit and enjoy the dome with friends and family.

“At Heartspace, we organise regular art, craft and music-based activities for the local community and we are planning

to use the willow dome for storytelling, circle dancing and picnics over the coming months. We hope that other local groups, schools and members of the public will also use it for events and activities.

“We are sure that the willow dome will become a well-used and wellloved facility for Bracklesham and the Manhood Peninsular."

Heartspace organises regular art, craft and music sessions for adults from the Manhood Peninsula to combat social isolation and contribute to the self-esteem, wellbeing and good mental health of the individual while encouraging the development of community spirit.

Kate will get creative at uni

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed author Kate Mosse is to become a visiting professor in creative writing and Contemporary Fiction at the University of Chichester.

THe author of eight novels and short story collections, her Languedoc Trilogy (Labyrinth, Sepulchre, and Citadel) is to be followed by a new major quartet of historical novels covering 300 years of history set against the backdrop of the French Wars of Religion and the Huguenot Diaspora.

THe first title in the quartet, THe Burning Chambers, is already an international number one best-seller and she is currently working on the second novel in the series, THe City of Tears, for publication in May, 2020.

Her gothic fiction includes number one-bestselling THe Winter Ghosts and THe Taxidermist’s Daughter, which is currently being adapted for stage and film. In all, her books have been translated into 37 languages and published in more than 40 countries.

Her writing also extends to non-fiction, plays, essays and introductions, and she is a sought-after broadcaster, interviewer, and interviewee.

As well as her active and hugely successful writing career, Kate is also an advocate of creative writing and is the funder director of the Women’s Prize for Fiction.

She was deputy chairman of the National THeatre until January, 2019, and hosts the pre- and post-show interview series at the Chichester Festival THeatre.

She is a trustee of Women of the World and patron of the local early music group, THe Consort of Twelve.

Kate is the judge of many literary and arts awards and was awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to literature.

She was named Millennium Woman of the Year for her service to the arts, and THe Bookseller recognised her as one of the top 100 influential people in publishing - one of only a handful of people to appear in every year's list. She was awarded a Writing Fellowship in Amsterdam for April, 2019, by the Dutch Literature Foundation.

Speaking of her Visiting Professorship, Kate said: “I’m Chichester born and bred, so it's a great pleasure to be asked to support my local university.

I like the spirit of the University of Chichester and its creative writing degrees are highly regarded in literary circles nationwide. THere is also a healthy attitude to the ecology of writing, and its history of successful alumni - of students of all ages - is to be celebrated.

WEST Sussex Record Office in Chichester was presented with a national award at an event on Monday night, putting it in the top six per cent of archives in the country.

National archive service accreditation is the UK quality standard, awarded to a select number of record offices, which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, was joined by the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Susan Pyper, and other county councillors for the award ceremony.

THe Record Office, which is a licensed place of deposit for public records and is the Chichester Diocesan Record Office, houses over eight miles of shelving containing archives dating back to 780AD. It also runs a records management service for West Sussex County Council.

Collections include the great estate and family archives of the county, the cathedral and diocese, and THe Royal Sussex Regiment.

THese archives sit alongside the records of hospitals and courts, organisations and societies, personal and family papers, as well the archives of the county council.

Wendy Walker, county archivist, said: “I am delighted that the Record Office has been awarded archive service accreditation.

“THis award reflects the high standards that we seek to achieve in looking after the wonderful collections that we hold and in making them accessible for everyone to use and enjoy."

Knife crimes KNIFE crime in Sussex was more than two times higher than actually recorded over the past three years, due to a ‘system issue’.

Between 2016 and 2018, while completing data about each incident, some officers did not tick a ‘semi-hidden’ box to say a blade had been involved.

THe information was shared by Deputy Chief Constable Jo Shiner during a meeting with Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

DCC Shiner assured Mrs Bourne knife crime in the county was relatively ‘still a very unusual crime’ and, even with the correct figures used, Sussex was midtable, compared with similar forces.

In 2016, 296 such crimes were recorded – the figure was actually 665; in 2017, 305 cases were recorded – the figure was actually 729; and in 2018, 298 cases were recorded, when it should have been 827.

In line with police forces across the country, the figures did not include incidents of possession – where someone was caught carrying a blade but had not used it.

Between 2016 and 2018, those figures rose from 540 cases to 594.

Explaining the computer issue, DCC Shiner told Mrs Bourne that the correct data would be sent to the Home Office.

She said: “When there is a crime which is a knife-enabled crime, then there is a box officers need to tick in order to positively say a knife was involved.

“But it’s at a really granular level that that box was almost semi-hidden, if you like, amongst the systems. So we’re putting that right.”

Keen to reassure the people of Sussex that the county ‘really is a very safe place to live’, she added: “If you look at the

figures which would be corrected had that box been ticked, then we would be mid-table in our most similar forces around the number of knife crimes that we would have under that category.

“So there was a recording issue which was completely down to the system.

“We’ve uncovered it, we’ve got the solution in progress – but we’re still comfortable with where we are, having included those additional offences within the numbers.”

Sussex Police has carried out continuous early intervention and prevention work to help reduce knife crime and explain to young people in particular the dangers of carrying a blade.

THe work includes visits to schools and colleges, carrying out test purchases in shops, and opening knife amnesty bins, where people can hand over their blades.

Mrs Bourne shared news from Crawley police where officers had visited a school to talk to youngsters – and one young student placed three knives, which he had been carrying for ‘protection’, in the bin.

DCC Shiner stressed the importance of working with schools, colleges, licensing agencies and trading standards to tackle knife crime.

She added: “THe last thing that they want to do is to deal with the consequences of somebody who has been hurt – or a young person who has impacted the rest of their life by being arrested and dealt with for possession or injury. So it’s important to all of us that we tackle this. But it’s got to be everybody that does so, not just the police.”

Fight for a cancer treatment goes on A FRUSTRATED councillor has hit out at the ‘endless layers of bureaucracy’ in the NHS as the fight for a cancer treatment unit in West Sussex continues.

Patients in the county currently face long and painful journeys to Brighton, Guildford and London to receive radiotherapy.

West Sussex is the only county in England not to have radiotherapy equipment, known as linacs, within its boundary.

Both the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance and NHS England have supported the idea of housing two of the machines at St Richard’s Hospital, in Chichester – but progress on actually getting it done seems to have stalled.

At a meeting of the county council’s health & adult social care committee, members were given an update on a recent public consultation on radiotherapy services in England.

Fiona Mackison, of NHS England South East, told the meeting there was nothing in the new service specifications to stop the plans for St Richard’s.

But that wasn’t good enough for Cllr Dr James Walsh,

Cllr Walsh said he was ‘slightly dismayed’ by the tone of the report, adding: “THere’s nothing in here to say it can’t happen?

“What I want to hear is a commitment that it’s going to happen and we’re going to have our two linacs at Chichester within, let me say, two years.”

Phil McNamara, of the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, told the meeting that two years was unlikely, adding: “We will categorically be immediately pushing forward with our plans for West Sussex, to say that we again continue to endorse the two linac position.”

But he pointed out that the next move had to see NHS Trust providers express an interest and come forward to develop a business plan.

It was pointed out that such interest had been expressed by the Western Sussex Hospitals Trust at a previous meeting.

Committee chairman Bryan Turner agreed he would write to the trust and ask them to ‘start their process going as soon as possible’.

` Funding cuts

Bags of help for citizens advice ARUN AND Chichester Citizens Advice has been chosen for a fundraising scheme.

THe independent charity has been chosen by Tesco to be part of its Bags of Help Grant Scheme.

Bags of Help is Tesco’s local community grant scheme, where the money raised by the sale of carrier bags is used to fund thousands of local projects in communities right across the UK. THe Citizens Advice project will be put forward to a customer vote in Tesco stores in Midhurst and Haslemere during March and April, 2019.

Not many people realise that Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice is a registered charity.

Almost 20,000 people across the Arun and Chichester districts are helped every year, with all kinds of issues - from debt,

benefits, and housing to consumer, energy and legal problems (and everything in between).

THey are 100 per cent independent and impartial and rely on funders, donations and their volunteers to provide our vital services.

THree community projects in the Post areas will be voted on by customers in Tesco stores.

Following the vote, the project that receives the most votes will receive a grant of up to £4,000, second place receiving up to £2,000 and third place up to £1,000. Customers are given a token when they buy their shopping that they can use to make their choice using the voting units in most stores.

Participating stores are: Tesco Superstore in Haslemere and Tesco Express at 10 North Street, Midhurst.

A SCHEME providing emergency help for the poorest people in West Sussex has had its funding slashed by more than 80 per cent since its launch.

THe Local Assistance Network was set up in 2013/14 to help those most in need in times of crisis.

THe assistance scheme has seen the council give everything from food and clothing to travel costs and furniture to people in dire need.

Until 2015, money for the fund came from the Department of Work and Pensions, but when this was dropped it fell to the council to plug the gap.

Figures from campaigners Church Action on Poverty, showed the amount of money put into the service dropped from £1.25m in 2013/14 to £788,200 in 2018/19 – a fall of 36.9 per cent.

THe council recently cut funding again – to £200,000 in 2019/20 – a total fall of 84 per cent.

West Sussex has received 27,589 applications for help since the scheme was launched, with 4,976 grants approved in 2018/19.

Since 2013, benefit delays have been the main reason people have been forced to ask for help.

Amanda Jupp, cabinet member for adults and health, said: "THe council is still investing £200,000 in 2019/20 which is to help people who have no other ways of getting assistance and are – for example – on low incomes or facing an unforeseen emergency.

"As a compassionate society, we need to ensure the system can prevent people being swept further into difficulty."

Chichester Down Syndrome Support Group have been invited to perform at Dance House in Bognor Regis at the Regis Centre on Tuesday, which couldn’t be timed better as it is World Down Syndrome Day. THis builds on their recent successful weekend performing in FestivALL in Chichester, on March 16 and 17, where they put on a spectacular routine as part of the celebration of people with additional needs.

Dance crew organiser Kath Lake said: "THe children are so excited to be

performing in a theatre. We are so proud of how far they have come over the past year, and with the expert guidance and boundless energy of their teacher, Suzanne Hill, it seems that the sky is the limit.

"THe local community embraces their talents and gives them so many opportunities to shine, which is lovely to be part of."

Suzanne added: "I am totally blown away by the dance crew and so proud of them. THey are all making fantastic progress, not just with their dancing, but with listening, communication and confidence.

"So many milestones being reached and smashed. We are all having the best time!”

THe dance crew consists of 17 dedicated members aged from two to 26. THey meet

weekly in Rose Green for lessons and rehearsals. THis would not be possible without the support of grants from the Arun Wellbeing Fund and the Pagham Pram Race, for which the dance crew is very grateful.

Over the last year the dance crew have performed at THe Chichester Canal for the Dragon Boat Race, the Aldingbourne Centre, BRASS Christmas fair, Chichester District Scouts Box Cart racing at Goodwood and the Bognor Regis Hospital Summer Fair.

Kath and Suzanne say they are grateful for all the event organisers who have put their faith in the dance crew, and hope that along the way they may have dispelled some myths and altered perceptions.

Surgeon's uni talk on artificial intelligence A WEST SUSSEX surgeon will talk about artificial intelligence in medicine for a first university lecture.

Will artificial intelligence ever be able to replicate how humans make decision? What health care decisions would you allow an artificial intelligence to make for you?

THese are the topics to be covered at a seminar entitled 'Artificial intelligence, medical decision-making and you' delivered by consultant surgeon David Beattie at the University of Chichester on Wednesday, April 10.

THe interactive seminar is aimed at those who wish to improve their understanding of what is meant by artificial intelligence and how it is already impacting on the world around us.

It will explore what artificial intelligence might do for us in the future, and those attending will be asked to consider what it could do when applied to medicine – as well as what it should and should not do in

this area.

David said: "Artificial intelligence has gone from what for most is an obscure and somewhat abstract concept to a phenomenon that touches most of us on a daily basis.

"Despite this, many people remain sceptical that machine-learned decision making is reliable and socially acceptable across a myriad of applications.

"My seminar aims to familiarise delegates with the concept of artificial intelligence and perhaps challenge their current perceptions – helping them to explore their acceptance of artificial intelligence and define some of the big questions for the future."

THe seminar will take place at the University of Chichester’s Bishop Otter campus between 5pm and 6m.

THe Age UK charity shop in Crane Street celebrated the re-opening following an extensive refurbishment.

Two of the dedicated team of volunteers also received certificates congratulating

them for ten years of service.

Commenting on the reopening, shop manager Kathy Manouch said: "THe charity has had a shop in Chichester for over 20 years, firstly as Help the Aged and then Age UK. "THe money raised by the sale of all the donated goods helps older people when they need help and support most. Too many older people feel they have no one to turn to for support, but we’re here to make sure they do.

"Age UK is dedicated to making sure every older person is respected, protected and treated with the dignity they deserve.

"We couldn’t achieve any of our aims without the help and support of our volunteers. It was a great pleasure to present Mark Edwards and Jill Goulding with their certificates acknowledging their ten years’ service."

Dramatis is also branching out with a community group called Dramatis Outreach, which is supported by a committee of dedicated volunteers and drama enthusiasts including local support worker Juli Willis, lecturer in child studies Rob Abbott and manager of Sussex Clubs for Children Keely Hardy.

Its aims are to work within the community delivering drama projects for therapeutic effect. THe first project will be working with adults living with

mental health illness, working towards a radio play with Radio Respect (CIC).

Suzy has been teaching for more than ten years.

Having recognized the enjoyment and therapeutic benefits drama brought to her students, she has been an activity club manager for adults with mild to moderate dementia, running a fun packed programme of drama activities and games to promote wellbeing. Her varied schedule of activities and patient approach led her to win the ‘Engagement and Wellbeing Specialist of the Year’ at the Hertfordshire Care Awards.

Since setting up Dramatis in 2017, Suzy has extended the range of training offered to include public speaking for adults, private tuition for students seeking help with professional drama exams, school workshops, Act Your Age group for adults and themed children's parties.

Viewing each student as part of an extended family, Dramatis believes that building people up, not breaking them down, is the key to success -both on and off the stage.

Celebrating mothers everywhere Mother's Day MOTHERING SUNDAY is a holiday celebrated by Christians in United Kingdom, Ireland and some other countries.

It falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Day. Once observed as a day on which people would visit their "mother" church, it has become an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents.

Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their 'mother church', usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented from doing so by conflicting working hours.

Although it is increasingly being called Mother's Day, that name properly belongs to the secular holiday which originated in the United States in the early 20th century and is quite distinct from the original tradition.

THe modern holiday of Mother's Day in the United States, which is fixed as the second Sunday in May there and in a number of other countries, was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna's mother died in 1905 and she wanted to honour her mother, Ann, who had been a peace worker and campaigner. Saying a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world", Anna invited other families to join her on the anniversary of her mother's death to think of their own mothers, which later led to the creation of a public holiday.

Today, in the United Kingdom, Mothering Sunday is a reason for families to get together, perhaps at a special event or for a meal to celebrate and thank their mothers.

Ruth (Felicity Jones), and her husband Martin (Armie Hammer) are students at 1950’s Harvard where she starts her struggles for equal rights, the inspirational film following her journey to become a US Supreme Court Justice judge.

Gaelic singer travels furthest south ever

Renowned engraver to tell of career Malcolm Appleby Wednesday, March 27, at 7pm

AKIN - Arundel’s Creative Collective welcomes hugely respected silversmith and metal engraver Malcolm Appleby to talk at their next "show and tell” session.

Malcolm has spent his career of more than 50 years dedicated to engraving and pushing the boundaries of metalwork and will talk to AKIN about his craft and his influences.

Malcolm studied at Central School of Art, Sir John Cass and the Royal College of Art in London before establishing his studio in Scotland in 1969.

He discovered gun engraving while at art school and over the years has created wonderful work such as the Raven Gun for the Royal Armouries.

Reggae band celebrate 40th anniversary with tour UB40 Guildhall, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth PO1 2AB Friday, March 29, 7pm www.portsmouthguildhall.org.uk AS PART of their 40th anniversary celebrations, Britain’s world-famous reggae band UB40 released their first new studio album in five years in September, 2018, and are now on tour, including a date at Portsmouth Guildhall.

Titled For THe Many, the album will be the Birmingham reggae veterans’ 19th studio album, featuring UB40 founder members Robin Campbell (co-vocals/guitar), Brian Travers (saxophone/keyboards), Jimmy Brown (drums), Earl Falconer (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Norman Hassan (percussion/ vocals), and long-time members Duncan Campbell (vocals), Martin Meredith (saxophone), Laurence Parry (trumpet) and Tony Mullings (keyboards).

He then used those skills to become a silversmith and metal engraver and is known for his imaginative use of line and form.

His work can be seen in the National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Crafts Council, London. Commissions include work in 10 Downing Street as well as the London Assay Office and the Residence of the First Minister for Scotland.

Malcolm was made MBE for services to hand engraving in 2014.

THe talk, on Wednesday, March 27, at 7pm at THe Victoria Institute, 10 Tarrant Street, Arundel, is free for AKIN members to attend but tickets cost £5 for non-members.

RECOGNISED worldwide as a Scottish folk singer who sings in both English and Gaelic, Karen Matheson is travelling the furthest south she's ever appeared to make a date in Emsowrth.

She will appear appear with her band at Emsworth's Baptist Church - the first time she's appeared in the area since performing with her band Capercaillie at Chichester Festival THeatre nearly ten years ago. As the band's lead singer, she has recorded 14 albums, and, in her own right she's recorded four solo albums.

Karen's Emsworth concert is the final one of an eight-date UK tour, which also takes in Liverpool, Pitlochry, Kendal, Bury, and London, and is the furthest south she's

Poems in the Case is Michael’s latest book.

Jo, who was born in Edinburgh, began learning the saxophone at 15 and in 1992 she won THe Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year. Inspired and encouraged by local Edinburgh musicians, Jo went on to study saxophone at the Guildhall School of music in London.

After recording her debut album Here and Now!, the legendary British trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton invited her to join his eight-piece band. She toured and performed with him in some of the most amazing theatres and venues in Britain.

Humph's fun-filled and melodic approach to music was to be a huge influence. And through performing in his band Jo also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks, and many others. Jo’s other influences include Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gorden, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans. Turkish delights bring warmth and satisfaction

Although it only has been opened for a few weeks, the owners spent months converting the former shop into a smart, bright comfortable venue, which has the unusual feature of an open cooking area where customers can see chefs at work at the

barbecue-type grill.

As three of us were dining, we were able to sample a number of dishes with choices guided by the smiling and helpful staff, although the menu also gave good descriptions for people who are unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine.

While trying to decide from the long list of both hot and cold starters, we enjoyed olives with flat bread, which also came in useful to accompany the moreish dips and filling lentil soup. An interesting small touch was a fresh lemon slice to squeeze into the delicious soup.

We swooped on a plate of grilled halloumi slices before trying to decide on main dishes

`New luxury restaurant in Chichester

- no easy task with so much choice, which included vegetarian offerings, fish and salads. Most of the meat dishes are based on lamb or chicken and we took the advice of our waiter and plumped for a lamb shank, lamb shish and chargrilled king prawns.

My lamb shank was a substantial piece of deliciously tender meat, which fell off the bone, while the shish was equally succulent but with slightly more of a kick, an acknowledgement of the restaurant's use of herbs flown in from an organic farm in Turkey. THe prawns disappeared quickly - a sure sign of decent cooking.

THe shank was served as a casserole with carrots and small potatoes, the shish had a

delicate yogurt and lemon sauce while bulgar wheat and salad were served alongside.

Although we were probably too full for dessert, we made an effort to try wonderfully crispy yet soft baklava accompanied with a superb raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream.

Turkish wine is available alongside bottles from more usual wine-producing countries and Reina Kitchen is making a feature of its cocktails, including house specials.

THe restaurant offers weekday two-course lunches at £11.45.

Thai delights from a family tradition direct to your plate

As we were being seated for lunch, the couple at the next table were putting their coats on to leave and merrily assured us we’d enjoy our meal. THeir good wishes clearly weren’t unfounded as we heard the gentleman at the table behind explain that he hadn’t had dinner the night before so he could order two main meals.

THe extensive menu was enough to tempt us to over-order, too, though we sensibly began with a platter of mixed starters to share. We expected the standard selection of enjoyable but often boughtin and forgettable chicken satay sticks, crab cakes and spring rolls with the obligatory sweet chilli dip.

Instead, we received truly restaurant quality morsels, brought to the table by executive chef Kit Khunia who delighted in explaining which of the five freshly made sauces complemented each food.

Like all good chefs, Kit began cooking at a young age with his mother. At the age of ten he was promoted from carrying and washing up to actual cooking and by 12 he became her official taste tester.

His professional career followed a similar trajectory, working his way up through cheffing positions to come full circle as a taster in Mayfair restaurants and five star hotels.

Tuptim Siam has given him the opportunity to come back to his passion of creating dishes personally for

customers with whom he delights in interacting.

Special dishes are even ordered ‘off menu’ by regulars and Kit loves the creativity - though does request that you phone in advance if you would like him to prepare something not listed on the menu.

Having been tipped off, we were lucky enough to sample one of these, a beef massaman which is only available on THursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as it is

cooked to a sweetly melting tenderness for three hours.

My friend was less enthusiastic about tryong the sweet and sour chicken - one of Tuptim's most popular dishes - as she usually finds it a sugary, synthetic disappointment. She was soon eating her words however, with sticky moreish mouthfuls of chicken and the loquacious Kit was happy to provide the answer; no

artificial colours or flavourings are used in any of his dishes and the balance of sweetness is created with fruit juices instead.

Even the side dishes were praise-worthy. We plumped for the special fried rice, which lived up to its name, being great fluffy grains interspersed with enormous prawns, chicken, peppers and alive with flavour.

Desserts, aside from ice cream, are usually only available at the popular Sunday buffets. THese are lunchtime extravaganzas of well known favourites and exotic flavours, with a selection and variety you won’t know how to say no to. THe fourth Sunday of every month switches to an evening buffet, at which you’ll need to book or risk not getting a seat.

We tottered out in to the fresh air to walk off some of our over-indulgence along the beach, vowing to come again very soon and clutching the bag of leftovers we couldn’t bear to leave behind.

Community News & Views A NATIONWIDE survey of 5,500 adults by campaign group Right to Vote shows 54 per cent in the West Sussex constituency favour a new public vote including those in Chichester.

With key votes taking place in the House of Commons - and just days left before the UK is due to leave the European Union on March 29, campaign group Right to Vote quizzed 5,500 adults across Britain.

Chichester was one of 31 constituencies surveyed - and the research found that 54 per cent of voters there who expressed an interest in wanting a final say on Brexit, with 46 per cent against.

THe Right to Vote research also reveals that in the Chichester constituency: • Support for a final say in the Brexit process is highest among 18-24 years olds, at more than three quarters (76 per cent) • THe second most enthusiastic age group are 25-34 year olds, at 71 per cent • THe least support for a final say is among 65 and overs, at 44 per cent Right to Vote was formed in January by several high profile MPs in response to what it describes as the Government’s failure to navigate Brexit. Co-founders include Dominic Grieve, Justine Greening, Sam Gyimah and three MPs who resigned from the Conservative Party last month; Heidi Allen, Anna Soubry and Dr Sarah Wollaston.

Its chairman, Dr Phillip Lee MP, was the first minister to resign from the Government to campaign for a final say on the Brexit process - and last month he was invited to meet with the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street to discuss the campaign's calls for a pause in the process and a final say vote.

Dr Lee said: “THis brand new research is further evidence that the public mood is increasingly concluding that we need a final say in the Brexit process.

“Nothing approaches the promises that were made in 2016, and as it stands, everything is currently a mess – offering people a final say is quite simply the only credible solution available.

“We all need to take a timeout, to allow the public the right to vote and have a final say.”

THE University of Chichester has been shortlisted for three awards in the national Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

It is a finalist in three categories: courses and lecturers; students’ union, and; student support.

Across the last six months the Whatuni review collection team collected more than 41,000 student reviews from 160 institutions and travelled more than 43,000 miles across the UK. THe finalists in the 15 different categories will find out if they have won at an awards ceremony to take place in London in April.

Dr Mark Mason, pro vice-chancellor (student experience), commented: “We are immensely proud to be finalists in three Whatuni Student Choice Awards categories.

“THat we have these short listings stands testament to the commitment we make to ensuring that each of our students is treated as an individual and is supported throughout their time with us.

“It is also an affirmation of the superb work carried out by our students’ union.”

THe University of Chichester is a strong performer in student support and experience, while its students’ union has been named among the best in the country for safe drinking and wellbeing by the National Student Survey.

It is seventh overall for student engagement according to the 2018 UK Engagement Survey and in the top 10 per cent in the country for its learning community.

According to the Guardian University Guide 2019, it is 15th out of 121 universities for satisfaction with teaching Jack Greenwood, Students’ Union president at the university of Chichester, said: “It is a great honour to represent the student body, knowing that our students recognise and appreciate everything we do makes it all worthwhile. As a small students' union, we know and care about our students and do everything we can to enhance the university experience."

CHICHESTER Harbour Conservancy welcomed Sarah Mukherjee last week, as part of the Government's review of all national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Ms Mukherjee, who is one of the members of the review panel, is a former environmental journalist and is currently chief executive of the Crop Protection Association and visited the harbour last week.

THe Government's project, referred to as the Glover Review, is looking at specific areas of the UK countryside to understand what legislative improvements can be made.

An independent review panel has been set up to oversee the process and report back in the autumn.

THe conservancy has submitted written evidence to help support the review's research process in which they focused on three key areas: greater harmony between National Parks and areas of beauty on statutory purposes, funding and co-

SINCE her visit to Chichester Nursery School last year, Chichester MP Gillian Keegan has been calling for maintained nursery schools to be fully funded.

During her tour, Gillian was impressed by the community work Chichester Nursery does to support the most disadvantaged families in the city.

Mrs Keegan said was pleased to see the recent Government announcement that an additional £24 million would be provided to fully fund maintained nursery schools for 2019/20.

THe statement by Children and Families Minister Nadhim Zahawi provides funding certainty for maintained nurseries like Chichester Nursery School, as well as 400 others across the country.

Since 2017 the Government has provided £60 million a year in supplementary funding for maintained nurseries to recognise the additional costs they incur. Alongside a cross-party group of MPs, in January Mrs Keegan raised the need for funding certainty in Parliament as the arrangement was due to end in March, 2020.

Mrs Keegan said: "THis is fantastic news for maintained nurseries up and down the country. It is right that we fully support the dedicated work of our nurseries. When I visited Chichester Nursery, I was blown away by activities provided for its pupils – from the mud kitchen to its woodwork area. THe level of support provided by the staff, who are all fully qualified teachers, was exceptional.

"I know this funding is much needed and I am glad the Government recognises this is not a long-term fix. Early years funding is one of the most important investments we can make and I will continue to work with all colleagues to ensure we present a strong case for maintained nursery school funding in the run-up to the spending review."

Commenting on the funding increase, Chichester Nursery School headteacher Ruth Campbell said: "We were really encouraged by last week's news that Nadhim Zahawi has promised to extend the supplementary funding for maintained nursery schools for an extra term. THis will enable us to be able to guarantee places for children applying to start with us in September for the whole academic year.

"However, we urgently need a guarantee of long-term sustainable funding for Chichester Nursery School and all maintained nurseries, to enable us to continue the amazing work we do with all children and particularly the additional support we provide for our most vulnerable families and children with special educational needs.

"We are so grateful for the support that Gillian Keegan, our MP, has given us to date and for the way she continues to fight on our behalf in Parliament."

THE TEAM at Covers Timber and Builders Merchants in Chichester donned an array of silly socks to raise funds for local charity Aldingbourne Trust.

A colourful collection of socks featuring everything from spots and stripes to more intricate patterns were on display for Wear Silly Sock Day, which was organised by the Quarry Lane company.

Martyn Beck, depot manager at Covers Chichester, said: "We are always happy to support local charities here at Covers.

"Our Wear Silly Sock Day was a great way for the team to do something simple and have a bit of fun, but also raise funds for a worthy cause at the same time."

All funds raised from the day will go to the Aldingbourne Trust, which supports people with learning disabilities and autism to live independent lives.

The Southdown Motor Services Ltd - Part two Written by Portia Tremlett, museum assistant at the Novium Museum ALTHOUGH Southdown Motor Services began with a heavy focus on the geographical areas of Worthing, Brighton and London, the company soon started to take over a series of other local businesses, creating one large company that ran a number of services along the South Coast.

In 1906, the Chichester and Selsey Motor Omnibus Co Ltd began life, but sadly folded after just 3 years. It was restored by Southdown Motor Services in 1920, and an office opened in Chichester in 1921. THis service between Chichester and Selsey became so popular due to its reliability that the ‘Hundred of Manhood & Selsey Railway’ became obsolete in 1935.

THe route to West Wittering was added after the acquisition of a local garage at Birdham owned by Alfred Trickey in June, 1923. THis route had first been driven by motorised car

by George THeobold on November 5, 1919, to the accompaniment of fireworks thrown beneath its wheels by supporters of the village horse bus. Trickey was then placed in Portsmouth and worked for Southdown Motor Services for over 40 years.

In 1923, the Summersdale Motor Services, which ran a route between Chichester and East Dean, was purchased from W. G. Dowle, along with a small office at the Dolphin Hotel in Chichester. Dowle continued to work as a manager until his retirement in 1948. Southdown Motor Services was at this time well-known for its efficient and reliable service, and this was seen through many actions, none more so than its response to a fire in 1923. On July 9 of that year, the garage they owned in Bognor Regis burned down, destroying 14 buses. Vehicles were immediately brought in from other depots to run the services and all journeys ran as scheduled.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the Southdown Motor Services began making improvements, and in September, 1934, a new bus and coach station was opened in Bognor Regis which was kitted out with modern facilities.

Chichester at this time, however, was not so lucky. THe company had owned a garage in Northgate and an office in the Dolphin Hotel, West Street, since 1923, but by 1938 the

constant presence of six to eight buses at a time next to the cathedral became a subject of contention among local councillors. During the early years of the Second World War, there were significantly fewer cars on the road due to fuel rationing and a new bus station was nearly opened on the roadside on West Street, but this did not happen.

THe Second World War and the Blitz had a marked effect on people and businesses in Britain, and Southdown Motor Services was no different, although damage to actual premises seemed relatively light. Out of 2,500 staff members, 987 had joined the armed services, 31 had been killed and 16 were taken prisoner. THe majority of the remaining staff had assisted the Southern Railway network which had suffered serious damage in the war and were left with large gaps in the line.

Southdown Motor Services staff had driven 88,717 passengers during this period.

Although the company was set up to run a reliable and efficient bus service, in the 1980s the company realised the value of their coach excursion service. THe Sussex Motor Road Car Co Ltd ran popular journeys to places like the Ascot races in 1908, and the Southdown Motor Services sought to capitalise on this popularity. THe company had offered excursions throughout its history, and in 1981 they started the Southdown Excursion Club.

Sadly, the end of Southdown Motor Services began with the Transport Act of 1980 and a government push to de-nationalise the bus companies for increased local accountability.

In 1985, the company was split into four geographical divisions, each managed semiindependently but with one general manager who at the time was Michael Sedgley.

On December 31, 1985, Southdown Motor Services was officially divided. In 1989 it was bought by Stagecoach, and in 1992 its name was formally changed to Sussex Coastline Buses Ltd. However, at the same time, a different division was given the name South Coast Buses Ltd, which covered the Eastbourne and East Sussex operations and meant that both had the shorted name of SCB. Due to this, Sussex Coastline Buses Ltd was officially named Stagecoach in 1993.

They are looking for volunteers that are parents themselves and who would be interested in supporting other parents in a safe and nonjudgemental environment. You will have access to relevant training through West Sussex County Council and one to one support from the Volunteer & Employment Co-ordinator. The Parents 4 Parents group runs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening of every month.

City ready, set, go to welcome final PostSport leg of the Chi Corporate Challenge HUNDREDS of people are set to run round the city of Chichester's streets for one more time in 2019 as the final leg of the Corporate Challenge comes to town on Wednesday.

More than 1,000 people of all ages have already taken part in the urban running event, which sees those taking part running a series of 700 metre laps starting and finishing at the Assembly Rooms.

THe second leg of racing on March 13 saw Jonathan White (Solent MD) take the victory in a field of more than 360 runners, completing the 4,500 metre course in 13:16.

Close behind were Jacob O'Hara (Oddbins) and Jack Woods (Worthing Hares) in 13:30 and 13:35 respectively.

THe first female home was Cassie THorp (Solent MD) in 15:47 with team-mate Katie Hopkins in 16:05 edging out Ellie Farrow (Portscity - 16:10) for second spot.

In the youth races Isaac Glanfield (Downview - primary boys), Florence East (Lyndhurst - primary girls), Oliva East (Mayfield - secondary girls), Eddy Purser (Purbrook Park - Year 7 & 8 boys) and Cameron Walker-Powell (Mayville High - Year 9 & 10 boys) took the honours.

Elsewhere, Bognor Tone Zone runners have completed a trio of half marathons last weekend with events across the south of England At the Hampton Court Half Marathon Tony Holcombe was first to finish in a sterling time of 1 hour 47 minutes.

Lisa Broad, who only started running a year ago, finished her first half marathon with Mark Desmond in 2 hours 29 minutes an outstanding effort.

Along the M4 in Reading were five club members. Jessica THomson had another weekend of racing and impressed again with a time of 1 hour 35 minutes.

Adam Norgett was next across the line in 1.52. THen came the trio of Gary Gaskin, Stuart THomson and Paul Stevenson, finishing in just over 2:10.

In north Hampshire, Andy Miles and Carl Bryant - the club's very own Pinky and Perkyrounded off the weekend with an adventure of their own.

Despite a fall at mile 11 and two broken toes for Bryant the pair finished in an impressive time of 1.48 as they continue with their marathon training.

Buoyant Blues need two more victories

CHICHESTER RFC know that two more wins is all they need to secure their London One South status for another season.

THe Blues return to action tomorrow after a rest week, making the short trip along the A27 to play bottom side Hove (2.30pm).

With the hosts not winning a single match all season, ninth-place Chi will head into the match as red-hot favourites.

With four matches remaining of the campaign and nine points separating Blues and the bottom three, Paul Colley's side know that two more victories will guarantee their spot in the league for another season.

Chi supporters will want to see a repeat of their last performance a fortnight ago Blues ran in five tries in inflicting a 3922 defeat on Chobham, a result which condemned the visitors to relagation.

THat win means they have now won four of their last six in the league.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor will want to keep up the pressure on the top two as they

head to Eastleigh IIs tomorrow (TBC).

THe Hampshire Avenue side - who beat Fareham Heathens 36-7 a fortnight ago - are currently third in the standings, two points behind Sandown & Shanklin.

With just three matches of the season to go, Bognor are seeking a bonus point win which will keep up the pressure on the top two.

--Chichester's Jess Breach wrapped up a record-breaking women's Six Nations as she scored two tries to in England's 80-0 demolition of Scotland last weekend.

THe result at Twickenham saw the Red Roses lift the Grand Slam - with the former Chi youngster picking up praise from all quarters for her stellar performances on the wing.

THe 21-year-old winger scored nine tries in the tournament - and has touched down an extraordinary 20 times in her seven test appearances.

THe Harlequins player also ended the competition with the highest metres made and the most line breaks.

TRAMPOLINING: Dragonflyers' Izzy Hauxwell was among five members of the Bognor-based squad to medal at NDP qualifiers series 2 held in Eastleigh.

Hauxwell's bronze medal was sealed with a stunning set routine that gained a phenomenal nine form score.

THe result was all the more impressive as the routine is barely touched in training where the focus is on national performance.

With the top three exceptionally close, Izzy is right in contention for a place in the Southern squads.

Fellow Regis School pupil Rosie budge was a mere 0.05 off gold medal.

Also coming away with silver was brother and sister duo Manon and Lucas Bailey while Daniel Boon took a bronze.

THe quintet are among a squad of 13 to qualify for the regional finals at the end of March. Many are in primary school and their first year of competition proving the club has strength in depth.

Leaders City keep winning CHICHESTER City’s march to the SCFL Premier title continues as the champions elect look set to mark half a season without defeat.

With just six matches of the season to go, the Oakland’s Park side are ten points clear at the top of the summit.

Chi made it 18 matches unbeaten with a 5-1 home victory against struggling Little Common.

THey had top scorer Scott Jones to thank for the victory after he netted a hat-trick in what was the club's fifth league win in a row.

Even though secondplace Horsham YMCA and Newhaven in third keep on winning, Chi show no sign of stopping in their run to the league crown.

Next up tomorrow is a trip across the border to play Surrey side Lingfield (3pm), a team who City have already beaten 7-0 in the reverse fixture.

A repeat of the performance would not be a surprise for the followers of Miles Rutherford and Graham Gee's side.

Chi have been ruthless in front of goal all season, scoring three or more in 14 out of a total of 32 home and away

league games.

THeir tally of 86 league goals - an average of nearly three a game - makes them the country’s fourth highest scoring team at Step Five behind Saffron Walden Town, Willand Rovers and Plymouth Parkway.

A fine example of their scoring prowess came last weekend when City overcame a spirited Common outfit.

THe hosts started the brighter and took the lead after only four minutes. A flick on from captain Conor Cody found Jones, who nodded home THe pony-tailed striker claimed his second within 60 seconds, beating the offside trap and rounding the keeper before calmly slotting home with his right foot.

Josh Clack added a third just before the break firing under the opposing keeper.

Common, who are just outside the relegation zone, got on the scoresheet after the break through Adam Smith.

But on 55 minutes Jones secured his hat-trick, lobbing the keeper with a peach of a left footed shot that curled into the top corner.

A late own goal completed the rout.

THREE young Chichester Colleges footballers are on cloud nine after gaining England honours.

Dylan Jelley, Liam Brady and LouLou Robson were all called up to play for the THree Lions Colleges squads.

Dylan and Liam both travelled to Italy, where they competed at the Roma Caput Mundi tournament in Rome, while LouLou played for the England Colleges’ women’s team in the WSL (Women’s Super League) Cup at Loughborough.

LouLou, who also plays at Chichester City, said: “I wasn’t really expecting to be selected, so it was definitely surreal and an honour to be in the England squad."

Dylan and Liam were joined on the trip to Italy by Chichester College lecturer Darin Killpartrick, who is head coach of the England Colleges Men’s team.

Dylan added: “I think being in Italy with the squad, playing and training in a different environment, was really good and to be able to play for my country was fantastic experience.

“I’ve played with and against a few of the other guys in the squad before, so it was good to be in the team with them.”

Sleeping Lions need to awaken PAGHAM'S sorry streak continues as the Lions look for just their second win in nine matches.

Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side have struggled in recent weeks as the club look to shake off one of their worst run of results in recent years.

Pagham's young charges thought they had picked up an important point away at struggling Langney Wanderers last weekend when Ryan Davidson broke the club's scoring drought.

THe defender scored the club's first goal

in 340 minutes by turning home Jamie Horncastle's effort.

But a goal for the home side eight minutes into denied the Lions and ensured their poor run continues.

THe loss sees Lions slip into the bottom half of the table, the first time all season the club have dropped this low.

THey will have the chance to get things back on track tomorrow when they welcome AFC Uckfield Town to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

Pagham have had mixed results against

Steve Bailey's side secured a 1-1 draw at Hailsham Town last weekend when Ben Mepham struck late to cancel out an early Shane Saunders goal.

Sids have already beaten Storrington twice this term, including a 3-2 away win in the RUR Cup in September.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham face a tough test as they look to end their league campaign on a positive note.

Robins welcome undefeated leaders Rustington to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm) in what is their final match of the season.

Bosham, who are currently seventh in the 15 team division, will need to perform better than they did last time out, when they were suffered a 2-0 loss away at Cowfold.

Smith urges Chi to end year on a high CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is urging his side to keep looking on the bright side of life after the club ended a three game losing streak in style.

THe Oaklands Park side have fallen off the pace in recent weeks with a run of three defeats ending any hopes of lifting the FA Women's National Southern Premier.

Second-place Chi ended that run with an 8-0 win at C&K Basildon last weekend.

With a fortnight off until they return to action against runaway leaders Coventry United on March 31, the City boss believes his side can end the season on a high Smith said: "I urge the players to keep positivity together and the team togetherness.

"Losing three games did knock us but we

have shown that we got through it "I would not change any issues we've had in recent weeks as it has taken us that to realise that we're a great club pushing together."

After a long trip to Essex, Chi scored four goals either side of half-time to brush off the recent results with Jess Lewry and Kim Stenning starting the rout. Molly Clark hit the Essex side for four while Sara Tubby came off the bench to grab a brace.

Smith said: "I've never [lost three in a row] as a manager and some of the players have not had that either.

"We have had to find a way to deal with it psychologically. THe last couple of weeks have been difficult all through the club and to give a performance like that is outstanding."

Blake: We must improve at the back if we're to make playoffs Next Game

LEATHERHEAD (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS first team coach Robbie Blake insists Bognor can still make the playoffs - but warns they must stop defending like "school kids".

Bognor are now ninth, five points off the top five after a 3-3 draw at fellow promotion chasers Enfield Town last weekend.

Despite eight first team players missing the trip to north London, the depleted squad took the lead twice but just could not hold on for the three points in windy conditions.

Rocks, who are struggling to find 11 fit players, rescheduled their midweek Sussex Senior Cup semi final against Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s on Tuesday.

Providing they can find a full squad, they will host tenth-place Leatherhead tomorrow (3pm) seeking their first win in a month.

Speaking to Rocks Radio after the match, Blake said: "Of course we can still do it. It will be tough with no win in five for us now.

"We are having a blip at the wrong time.

THe lads are giving tremendous effort and commitment to the club and, I'm not making excuses, but injuries have killed us."

After falling behind to a freak free kick from 35 yards out, which sailed over the head of debutant keeper Petar Durin, THeo Widdrington equalised on 14 minutes Brad Lethbridge then put Bognor in front with 15 minutes to go after the on-loan Pompey striker turned his defender well.

THe hosts got back on level terms with a

scrappy goal before a wonderful curling effort from Mason Walsh restored the Rocks lead.

THat was until a Keaton Wood clearance was adjudged to have crossed the goal-line.

Blake said: "We've got a point in the end but games are running out. THey are a decent outfit with aspirations to get in the playoffs, but still it's a disappointing result having been leading 2-1 and 3-2.

"With the way things have gone this season I was always worried they would go gung ho and route one and we are not good enough defending leads.

"We act like school kids running after the ball with it bouncing here and bouncing there.

When there's no one with real leadership to command the area, you lose out in those situations."

With keeper Dan Lincoln (hip) joining other key players like Doug Tuck, Jimmy Muitt, Calvin Davies, Gary Charman and Jimmy Wild on the treatment table, Bognor are set to hand a home debut to on loan Durin. Left back Joe Tomlinson should also be back to boost the ailing defence.

Blake said: "THat's 51 goals conceded now and I'm not sure a team conceding that amount will be in the playoffs.

He added: "THey're all important games but with no win in five, we just have to knuckle down and keep going and try and get three points."

Two in and one out for Bognor IT'S been a week of ins and out at Nyewood Lane as Bognor boss Jack Pearce rings the changes ahead of the season run in.

THe most high-profile bit of transfer news is that defender Corey Heath has left the club after nearly two years at the club.

THe former Worthing player has spent much of the last season injured. Rocks wished him the best for the future.

Coming in to the club, though, are two promising young players.

Towering teen goalkeeper Petar Durin has joined on loan from Portsmouth as cover for injured Dan Lincoln.

He made his debut in the 3-3 draw at Enfield last weekend.

Young Canadian midfielder Emmett Dunn has also been added to the ranks after impressing boss Jack Pearce and coach Robbie Blake in training, Dunn is dual-registered with Southern Combination League Premier Division leaders Chichester City.

A spokesman for Chichester City said: "Emmett is a great lad with so much potential. As always, we want to support the development of our players and give them the opportunity to step up."

I THINK it's fair to say there's a real downbeat mood around the club at the moment.

Last weekend's draw at Enfield should have really been something to celebrate.

We have quite a poor record up there and for a while it looked like we would correct that with three points.

As it was, the wind was quite strong and did play a part the game - not least their first which was scored almost from the halfway line!

I don't think anyone blamed the young keeper we have in on loan from Portsmouth as it was a tough match to come in to with a patched up team in front of him.

I didn't expect us to score three and fail to get the win, especially given the absences we have up top.

Mason Walsh stepped up and think he will be key for us moving forward. It was great to see Brad got on the scoresheet again as he needed a goal.

THeo has done great as well.

He is excellent at free kicks and he gets us going forward, which we need with Doug Tuck being out.

Aside from their opener, it's fair to say Enfield's two other goals were lucky (for them).

THe second goal saw Ed Sanders slip on the mud bath of a pitch and the third looked like the ball was cleared off the line but officials somehow said it was in.

After the draw, I think playoffs are now a tall order.

We have not won now for over a month which is not the type of form you want at this time of the season.

Worthing seem to be getting players back at the right time and I don't think Haringey, Dorking and Tonbridge can be caught at the moment.

If we get into the playoffs it will be in that fifth position.

Competition will be tight.

It will be sickening to see Worthing make it and we don't but when I look at the fixture list I just cannot predict us getting wins, given the injuries

that we have.

Leatherhead are below us but they can play good football. Jimmy Bullard was there as a manager and they have retained that approach to playing the game the right way.

I don't know why - and I do remain an eternal optimist - but I just fear for us at the moment as things are going against us.

We are just struggling for players and, given that we have seven or eight available players, it was no surprise that the match in midweek against Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s in the county cup was called off.

I can understand the frustration as this match has been rescheduled a number of times now.

It would have been a good night under the lights at the Nye Camp and I was looking forward to it.

I also feel for Seaford as we were supposed to play them earlier on in the campaign and they were kicked out of the contest as they couldn't field a side.

But given the fact we have been so accommodating to Brighton, it is good of the County FA to move the match back a few weeks.

I don't know how we will get on with the game when it comes around.

I just hope that we have enough fit players to get a team out tomorrow.

We do tend to have small squads at Bognor but I don't think it has ever been this bad down there.

I know there a few fans who would like to see some of the young players, like Josh McCormick, Liam Brady and Ollie Humphreys get some game time.

Perhaps this is time that we throw them in at the deep end and see how they get on.

Let's hope things fall into place and we somehow get the win tomorrow.
