Festival archives honour Bernstein

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FOLLOWING the huge success of the Bernsetin in Chichester Festival last year, an archive of materials from the event has been presented to the West Sussex Record Office.

It provides a full account of the celebrations, including the festival brochure and printed marketing items, news releases, event programmes, correspondence, and newspaper and magazine articles, films and interviews, and shows the city’s continuing close links to Leonard Bernstein.

THe eight-month festival marking the composer’s centenary year featured concerts, ballet, workshops, revues, jazz, talks, film shows, exhibitions and reunions.

Emma-Jane Wyatt and Edward Milward-Oliver, who organised the festival, said: "Our donation of the archive to West Sussex Record Office recognises the enthusiasm and generosity of the many participants and supporters, and a community keen to honour Leonard Bernstein's life and work."

Bernstein was commissioned to write the Chichester Psalms by Walter Hussey, the Dean of Chichester Cathedral, in 1963, and came to Chichester for its UK premiere at the cathedral in July 1965.

THe work was performed again in Chichester Cathedral by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the three choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals, under the

baton of Marin Alsop, at the end of the festival last year.

One of Bernstein’s most popular compositions, it was the fifth most performed concert work around the world in 2018.

Bernstein’s son, Alexander Bernstein, flew in from New York to attend the closing concert of the festival.

He told the Chichester Post in an exclusive interview: "THere was an element of luck in Chichester Psalms.

It was his doctor who introduced him to Dean Walter Hussey and he took the chance and asked my father who said yes.

Thousands awarded for week THE NOVIUM Museum in Chichester has been awarded a grant of £10,130 from Arts Council England to run this year’s Chichester Roman Week.

Chichester Roman Week takes place every May half-term and celebrates Chichester’s rich Roman heritage, with a programme of events designed to engage visitors of all ages taking place in and around the district.

THe grant funding will help to build on the success of last year’s Chichester Roman Week, which was awarded a coveted bronze award in the tourism event of the year category at the Beautiful South Awards 2018.

THis year’s event will run from Saturday, May 25 to Friday, May 31, with an extensive and varied programme of events taking place.

THis will include the headline Roman Rre-enactment in Priory Park on

Tuesday, May 28, which will take place from 11am to 4pm, and will be free to attend.

Last year’s interactive re-enactment attracted more than 2,000 visitors over the course of the day and included a military show, slave auction and the show-stopping Gladiator Battle finale, which invited children from the audience to take part.

Stephanie THorndyke, manager of THe Novium Museum and Chichester Tourist Information Centre, said: "By taking our museum practice into the city, Chichester Roman Week will engage local residents, families and visitors to the area with the museum’s Roman collections and our fascinating Roman heritage."

More than 200 people, including group travel organisers and coach operators, attended the Visit Chichester Leaflet Exchange and Leisure Show at Chichester Festival THeatre.

Representatives of over 50 visitor attractions, accommodation providers, shops, restaurants, pubs, events and

leisure activity operators were present to chat with each other and talk to members of the public attending.

THe forum highlighted the exciting developments happening across the Chichester region during 2019 to stimulate ideas for people to plan their leisure time in the months ahead.

"THis was the most successful event of its kind that Visit Chichester has ever organised and we will definitely be repeating the exercise in 2020,” said Louise Adlam, destination marketing executive at Visit Chichester.

“We were particularly pleased with

the response from the public who we had opened the show to for the first time this year. Many of those attending were gathering information for friends and relatives intending to come to the region which serves as a reminder of the considerable economic benefits that tourism brings through this channel.”

THe pound's drop in value on foreign exchanges by about ten per cent in the past two years also made it less lucrative for those from Europe to work in the UK, said Mr Hall.

He said: "We also have lots of worries about what is going to happen at the borders.

"THere are extreme concerns about hold-ups, especially when goods like young plants are being imported.

"THe last thing we want is for those plants to be delayed both in terms of damage to the plants and in terms of the storage and logistics of moving them."

Despite the potential problems, and the closeness of Britain's break from the EU as a result of the 2016 referendum result, Mr Hall said the horticulture industry around Arun and Chichester had a potentially bright future.

"THere are absolutely massive opportunities available. THere is more and more demand from the public and supermarkets for British produced food and plants," he added.

"We are in a good position in Sussex to respond to that and produce more, which everybody wants to do.

"But, if we don't have the labour, it makes it more difficult to do that."

` Stolen rings POLICE are investigating a breakin at Gold Arts, a jewellery shop in East Street, Chichester, which took place at around 11.10pm on Tuesday, February 26, and which saw a quantity of rings stolen.

Burglars entered the back of the property and made an untidy search of the interior, smashing display cabinets to steal rings of an as yet unknown quantity and value.

Detectives have not ruled out the possibility of the break-in being linked to a burglary at Pressley's jewellery shop in North Street, Chichester, overnight on January 7-8, during which 14 rings with a combined value of £27,000 were stolen.

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious, who is offered jewellery in unusual circumstances, who has relevant dash-cam or CCTV footage, or who has other information, is asked to contact Sussex Police online or by phoning 101, quoting serial 20 of 27/02.

Alternatively please contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, online or by phoning 0800 555 111.

` Skatepark funds CABINET members have said £70,000 will still be available for a skate park in Petworth once the town council decides on a location.

In 2001, £50,000 was allocated from the Petworth Leisure Fund to pay for the project but no suitable site was ever decided after two car parks were ruled out.

Council debate over the budget

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS spent over an hour debating the budget at its full council meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

THe leader of the opposition, Liberal Democrat, Cllr Adrian Moss, proposed amendments to the recommendation of the investment opportunities reserve to be increased by £532,500.

Cllr Moss asked for the cabinet to consider an amendment to this recommendation, with the councillors having to take a recorded vote on each: • THe appointment of a climate emergency officer on a three-year fixed term contract to support Chichester District Council in developing policies on climate change, protection of biodiversity and to identify specific actions for the council to undertake, with the maximum employment costs to be £150,000 • Evening parking to be free of charge in Northgate and New Park Centre car parks for an initial fixed term of three years, with an estimated loss in revenue of £115,00 per year.

• Any remaining balance to be placed in the investment opportunity reserve account.

Councillors spent around an hour debating the amendments and no comments were made regarding the council tax rise.

One councillor called out: "Is this

council accepting that we spend an hour debating an amendment and no time whatsoever on a £5 increase in our rates?" However, Diane Shepherd, chief executive, confirmed that after the chairman had asked for comments, no councillor motioned to speak.

After the discussion, the recorded vote showed the majority of councillors were in favour of Cllr Moss's alterations and council leader Tony Dignum agreed they would be given due consideration.

Cllr Jonathan Brown, supportive of his party's recommendation, said: "THis council cannot prevent catastrophic global climate change. But we can acknowledge and accept that we are facing a genuine climate emergency.

We can try to lead the way, inspire others to follow us and shame those doing nothing. But to do so we need policies that are practical, affordable and defensible should developers challenge us for going further than the government currently requires.

"THis council is incredibly lucky to have such good people working for us but they are all incredibly busy. It was fantastic to see a policy promoting wildlife corridors make it into the Draft Local Plan and I know there has been work done on other policies behind the scenes. But our officers have their hands full. As a council, we need to do more.

"We are talking about diverting money from an Investment Opportunity Reserve to an opportunity to invest in the preservation of life on earth.

"More specifically, and less

dramatically, we are talking about investing in protecting our local biodiversity and our regional ecosystem before it’s too late. THat sounds like a good investment to me."

Cllr Moss said after the meeting: "THe Liberal Democrats are delighted that our fellow councillors supported our amendments to the council budget at the council meeting.

"A dedicated climate emergency officer can help the council focus on the issues that really matter and drive change through the council. It is an investment in the future of our district and I know will be welcome by many residents.

"THe reason we felt it was important to reintroduce free parking in the evenings is because we understand the pressure on our restaurants and shops. We wish to see Chichester thrive and people from outside the city enjoying what the city has to offer.

"THe fact that we won the vote so

overwhelmingly demonstrates that the Liberal Democrat group has real influence and carries many of the hopes of our local residents."

THe 2019-2020 net budget requirement for the council's own services was approved at £13,829,600 and a 3.21 per cent council tax rise on the Band D charge was also approved.

At the cabinet meeting last month, Cllr Dignum said: “I think this is an excellent budget. It has been balanced without drawing on our reserves.

It is funded completely out of the current expenditure.

“It is a modest increase (of council tax) of 10p a week or £5. Our other sister authorities have had to raise their council tax considerably more, police by £24 for the year and the county by around £60."

THe county council's increase of around £65 and Sussex Police of £24, added to the district's rise, will make an average increase of £95.

Council's new industrial units officially open for business

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SIX NEW units have officially opened in Terminus Road by Chichester District Council and the first tenants have confirmed now is the time, before Brexit, to move in.

THis is the second building project on the Terminus Road industrial estate that has been commissioned by Chichester District Council to support local businesses. THe first was the £6 million Enterprise Centre, which opened last year.

THe £2 million industrial units, known as Ravenna Point, are based on Plot 21, which was previously home to Goodwood Metalcraft. THe redundant building was considered no longer suitable for modern business needs.

THe building was demolished to make new spaces for the units which were declared open on Monday morning.

Quantum Electrical Distribution Ltd has been confirmed as the first business to become tenants of plots 5 and 6.

Managing director Tony Jenner said: "We have got a team of 12 coming in here.

THe good thing about this particular location is that it's near one of the main roads into Chichester and located near to the A27. It suits us brilliantly.

"THe location here also means we can be a seven-day-a-week operation because we are in the public eye and we

can be pushing out a lot more goods. We also have a 24-hour operation, which has worked well at our branch in Crawley.

"I think everyone is holding back because of Brexit but I think once the end of March comes, whatever happens, deal or no deal, all of a sudden the confidence will come back because people are in limbo at the moment.

"I think, personally, the best time to get in here and expand is probably now because everyone is going to be doing it, hopefully, afterwards."

Each unit at Ravenna Point will provide between 230 and 300 square metres of floor space plus the potential to add a mezzanine floor at the tenant's discretion. THere will also be the option for each business to dedicate some space to a trade counter area. It is predicted that each unit will employ around five people.

“I am delighted that this key project to support our local economy is ready,” says Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council. “We are very pleased to welcome the first tenant, Quantum Electrical Distribution Ltd. THe company is looking to expand and has chosen Chichester as its second location.

"THe site will provide modern and high quality space for trade-type businesses and will also provide employment for local people.

“Ravenna Point follows the opening of the Enterprise Centre last year, also situated in Terminus Road. THe centre is aimed at helping start-up, small and

medium sized businesses and there is already excellent take-up of the units.

"Because the site is owned by the district council, the rental income will go towards helping us provide key services for our residents. "

` Police reports OVER THE week from Monday, February 25, to Sunday, March 3, there were several reports made to police in the Chichester area.

In Gilmour Road, Chichester, on Tuesday, February 26, a property was broken into between 9am and 10.50am. Entry was via a rear window and cash was stolen from the property. Serial 0451 26/2.

Overnight into February 26, a vehicle was stolen from the driveway of a property in Mosse Gardens, Chichester. THe vehicle was a grey Volkswagen EOS convertible.

In Deeside Avenue, Chichester, overnight into February 26, a vehicle was broken into and garden tools stolen. Serial 0450 26/2.

Overnight into February 27, a vehicle was stolen from outside a property in Peacock Close, Chichester. THe Vehicle was a white Toyota Aygo. Serial 0496 27/2.

In Lloyd Road, Chichester, overnight into February 27, a vehicle was broken into and cash and credit cards stolen. Serial 0255 01/03.

Overnight into Friday, March 1, a vehicle was broken into in Baxendale Road, Chichester, and cash stolen.

Also on Friday, police received a report of a vehicle break-in at Peacock Close, Chichester, and a dashcam was stolen. Serial 0591 01/03.

THURSDAY 23RD MAY f The A27 at Chichester causes lengthy delays

A27 meeting with key leaders to help get funding is questioned by councillor AN IMPORTANT meeting due to be held about the future of the A27 has been cancelled - just days before it was due to take place.

On Tuesday, prior to news of the cancellation, a district councillor had questioned the leader about the meeting.

At Chichester's full council meeting, Cllr Richard Plowman had asked leader Tony Dignum: "I understand that there is a meeting coming up quite soon. Could you tell us who is going to be at that meeting, what the agenda is and what the likely outcomes to that are likely to be?

"Will you also confirm that if there is an alternative route which doesn't go near the national park or in it, then that this is the preferred route?"

Cllr Dignum responded, saying: "THe meeting on March 11 will have the leader of the county council (Louise Goldmsith), the leader of the district council and the chief executives, meeting with the roads minister, Mr Jesse Norman.

"I am not sure whether Highways England will be there but I would be surprised if they weren't.

"I don't know really what is on the agenda, with the exception of pushing to get some sort of improvements to the strategic routes around Chichester committed to by the government.

"THe impression which as gained by our last meeting is that basically there is no scope in Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS 2 - 2020-2025) and no commitment actually they are doing anything in RIS 3 - 2025-2030.

"What we have been trying to do is at least get commitment to a design study taking place in the 2020-2025 timeframe so something can begin in RIS3.

"On the particular point about national parks, it's not a Highways England policy, it's statutory - no highway can go through a national park if there is a viable, alternative route."

No reason has been given for the cancellation of the meeting.

New design is care free

Oving residents will show off their scary creations for 2019 OVING Scarecrow Day is back for 2019 with lots of exciting things happening all around the village with scarecrows on every corner!

THe event will take place on Saturday, May 11, from 12pm to 5pm, and will include a ‘guest’ scarecrow area, so visitors can make their own scarecrow and bring it along before mid-day to the area at Madam Green Farm.

Sue Catlett, co-organiser of the event, said: "Some attractions and entertainment are still being finalised but we can confirm that, by popular request, the Wessex Ferret Club, Sussex Saddleback pig group and the Sussex Steel Band are definitely coming back.

"We will also have music from the Sundays choir, dancing from Fishbourne Mill Morris dancers, tractor trailer rides, have a go archery and croquet and many other activities.

"All of this is made possible by many volunteers, generous local business sponsorship, and by our visitors last year buying refreshments and raffle tickets, which enable this year’s entertainment."

THe small team of organisers have been working hard behind the scenes to provide a fun day that all the family can enjoy.

A LOGO has been chosen to represent the city's car free day after a competition was launched in January.

A campaign group wants to trial a scheme inside the city walls one Sunday a month. Key aims of the campaign are to reduce pollution, make it more safe with fun places to walk and cycle by extending the heart of the city outwards and to help combat climate change.

As part of this, the group had asked the public to help design a logo. THe winning one was designed by Kenneth Dolman, a retired professional graphic designer, who said that he saw the competition in the Chichester Post and decided to take part 'on a whim'.

He backs the campaign as a great way for people to enjoy the city streets without having to worry about cars.

His logo cleverly re-brands the campaign as a Carefree day. THe addition of the extra 'e' is a fun play on words and encapsulates the aspirations of the day to take away the stresses and pollution associated with the over-dominance of motorised vehicles on our city streets.

Kenneth's motivation for producing the design is twofold. Firstly, he confesses to having a pure and simple love for creating logos. When he read the story in the Chichester Post calling for a carfree logo, he couldn’t resist rising to the challenge of creating an original graphic.

Secondly, he is keen to promote carfree days in the city where families can

happily explore the streets in safety and enjoying freedom from traffic.

Cllr Sarah Sharp, from Chichester City Council, said: "I am delighted with Kenneth's design, which reflects just what the day is about. We hope the day won't be focused on the negative but can unlock the good things about having a carefree time.

"THe clever design takes Chichester's city centre and redraws this as a leaf shape with a representation of the four key streets - East, West, North and South Street.

"It puts a family in the centre of our city and I like this as people and their health and well-being are so central to the core of the campaign. We want to bring more people into the city.

"Our hope is that with time we can grow this campaign to cover the inner city centre, even if this year we only manage to have a small event on September 22.

"We are aware that some people don't welcome this idea and we hope to work to smooth out people’s misgivings but equally there are a lot of people who are excited by the possibilities that a Carefree day can deliver. THere are exciting times ahead for the campaign!"

THe Chichester Car Free Campaign has received enthusiastic, positive feedback from members the Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) and it is hoped to work closely with them to arrange an event on September 22 to coincide with International Car Free Day. ` New group CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan has launched a new All Party Parliamentary Group on social care, with Labour MP Louise Haigh.

THe group held its first meeting on Tuesday, February 26, where MPs were appointed to the group under the leadership of Mrs Keegan and Mrs Haigh as co-chairmen.

THe group will be working in Parliament to support employees, employers and care recipients in the sector. THe group will look at urgent issues such as funding and standards in the care sector.

THe Chichester MP said: "THe care sector struggles to attract new recruits and retain people, resulting in a high staff turnover of 28 per cent.

"It is crucial we support high quality in work training for people in the care sector to help them develop in their careers. I am hopeful that this will encourage more people into care work and encourage people to stay in the sector.

"I am also keen to ensure that working in care could once again develop into a natural stepping stone for people to move into nursing."

THe importance of such a move was highlighted at a recent reception in Parliament. Mrs Keegan met with care professionals to launch a national recruitment campaign, which aims to fill the 110,000 current vacancies across the sector.

Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK said: “We welcome the formation of this important All Party Parliamentary Group. Social care is a vital public service for older people and deserves to be championed by Parliamentarians from every party."

City resident speaks up on her homeless experiences

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A BUSINESSWOMAN who was awarded a civic award by Chichester City Council last month has opened up about her experiences at being homeless.

Donna Ockenden, who set up and runs THe Chichester Four Streets Project – a charity which helps the homeless in the city – has spoken about her own personal struggle living without a permanent home.

With around 26 volunteers, the charity distributes food, water, hot soup and any other necessities homeless people might need, such as dry socks, sleeping bags and toiletries.

On Monday, February 4, Donna was given a civic award by the council for her tireless work which also includes the Community Coat Rack, run during the winter to give free coats to those in need.

At only 18, Donna found herself homeless and with full responsibility for her four siblings aged four to 16 in Bristol in 1985.

THe only solution available to Bristol City Council was ‘emergency bed and breakfast’ accommodation.

THe family got used to meeting drug users, drunks and recent discharges from the local psychiatric hospitals.

All the bathrooms and toilets were shared, there was one canteen style

facility to serve breakfast. After that, residents were expected to leave the house until 5pm.

Donna said: "I should tell you that just like every homeless, hungry and vulnerably housed person we meet on the Four Streets Project we had hopes and dreams for the future.

"We had an interesting life, once, living very comfortably in a big house, in Abu Dhabi, Iran and Nigeria through our parents' work and we had gone to private school.

"Our parents had a spiteful and nasty divorce, spent huge amounts on legal fees, lost the first house and failed to recognise that the most important thing to achieve out of the divorce should have been the welfare of their children.

"Homelessness, however long ago, is never forgotten – it leaves a scar, it leaves a fear. THat fear never goes away.

Many of the people we see remain on a download spiral.

"My homelessness was something that was caused by actions of others and was outside my control. Many of the people we help will have had a similar set of circumstances imposed upon them, the difference is that I managed to pull myself and my family out of where we landed – they have not.

"My plea then is that rather than think of the people we help as an inconvenience who make Chichester look untidy, who are someone to walk past hurriedly, remember that they too will have a

‘back story’, they will be cold, they will be hungry, they will be frightened.

Remember this – and be kind."

A 60-year celebration for twinning between Chichester and Chartres

Jean-Pierre Gorges, mayor of Chartres and president of Chartres MĂŠtropole, came to Chichester with councillors on THursday evening to start celebrations with the mayor of Chichester and Friends of Chartres.

On Friday afternoon, both the French mayor and Cllr Martyn Bell, mayor of Chichester, helped to plant a Prunus 'Umineko' - Japanese cherry tree in Litten Gardens.

Cllr Bell then showed Mr Gorges the sculpture which was unveiled during the remembrance service last year, which depicts a back to back soldier who returned from the war to take up a former occupation as a gardener. It takes inspiration from a Private Alfred Smith, of the 4th Battalion THe Royal Sussex Regiment.

Mr Gorges said to the Chichester Post: "It is very important to be here to celebrate the 60 years of twinning, particularity for me and my generation, because I was born in 1953 so it wasn't that long after the Second World War. "THe twinning was an important part of the reconciliation after the war for Europe. Chartres is actually twinned with Ravenna in Italy, Speyer in Germany and, of course, Chichester in England.

"THe twinning is just as important 60 years ago as today. THis is more Europe than in Brussels. We think that doing twinning here and is more significant that in Brussels.

"Chichester is a lovely place because you have everything here, a city, the

countryside, the sea, you have everything here and it should be appreciated."

Cllr Bell agreed, commenting: "It is very significant what Jean-Pierre said.

He said this is Europe, not Brussels, but this direct relationship between France and Germany and the UK. THis is the real Europe. It is very true."

Cllr Anne Siculuna, from Chichester City Council, who is vice-chairman of Friends of Chartres, has been part of the twinning since it started.

She said: "I was certainly involved in the very first children's exchange in 1959.

"Despite Brexit, I think to be honest the twinning has always been important to us and it will continue to be so.

"It existed before the Common Market as it then was and friendships have been established over the years and they will continue."

During the visit, both mayors signed the Deed of Jumelage which was originally signed in 1959 at the council chamber by the mayors of Chartres and Chichester at the time and although it is not a legal contract between the two cities it does form a partnership to work together and co-operate with each other.

On Saturday, the group had a city tour led by Cllr Scicluna, who is also a blue badge city guide.

Julia Sander, chairman of the group, said: "We focused on the area around the cathedral and the Pallants. THe French were impressed by the fact that our cathedral is older than the one in Chartres - by a few years.

"We dropped in to the Pallant House Gallery, where the Maire de Chartres was welcomed by museum director Simon Martin. We then visited THe Novium, where the group was particularly impressed by the Chichester Camera Club's photographic exhibition."

For lunch, the group visisted THe Nag's Head to experience the atmosphere of a typical English pub and eat a typical English roast dinner from the carvery. THere was time for a nap or shopping before the evening concert in the Assembly Room put on by the Chichester City Band.

THe band started with both national anthems and then played a selection of British and French music including 70s and 80s pop, and music from Ravel's Bolero and some Edith Piaf songs. At the end, the band played their signature tune, Sussex by the Sea. Cllr Bell said: "It was a great privilege for me to welcome the Mayor of Chartres, Jean-Pierre Gorges and his fellow councillors to Chichester.

"THe programme organised by THe Friends of Chartres was excellent and I know that our French visitors, all of whom are now safely back in Chartres, had a very enjoyable and at the same time very informative visit. I was delighted that His Grace, THe Duke of Richmond, and the West Sussex High Sheriff, Caroline Nicholls, were able to join the visitors in the cathedral for evensong on the Friday - a very moving service that featured a number of French choral works and verses.

"Earlier that day, the county council organised visits to their impressive Westhampnett solar farm and then the Record Office to see the US Revolutionary Parchment.

THe visitors found both fascinating.

THe visit ended with a superb performance of French and British music by the Chichester City Band in THe Assembly Rooms - a wonderful way to mark the close of the 60th Twinning Anniversary celebrations."

Driving to success for cancer charity

Despite the weather being unpredictable at the start of the day, the blue sky appeared for the CancerWise Supercar Track day.

THe event, organised by Peter Saywell, owner of Saywell International, saw people of all ages come along to watch and enjoy all the beautiful supercars and raised a total of £7,543.07.

Spectators were also able to get closer to the amazing cars by having a passenger ride in the parade lap at lunchtime, while being able to chat to all the car owners and drivers.

Fundraising manager Emma Neno

said: "We are very grateful to have the support of Peter Saywell and everyone at Saywell International. THe track day was a day to remember, with so many people coming along to make the most of a truly brilliant day.

"THe money raised will help support so many people who need our help.

Dancers are in pole position for showcase

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AERIAL ARTISTS from across the Post area showed off their skills at a special night on Saturday.

THe dancers, who specialise in pole fitness and aerial hoop, put together a special showcase at Bersted Park Community Centre to help raise around £800 for the charity, Village Friends.

THere were three acts during the 'Night of Dance', which included solo and group performances and a special chair routine from THe Golden Girls, who learn with instructor, Sue THompson, at the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis.

Other performances were from students who train across Sue's venues in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Trustee of the charity, Elizabeth Folman, said: "THe show was a wonderful community event, with a lovely atmosphere.

"THe performers were great and I was so impressed by their professionalism and technical skills, particularly their stamina, control and discipline.

"THe funds raised were amazing and

will enable Village Friends to hold three social events this year for those people we visit, covering the costs of hall hire and catering, and also what will be a real bonus, as we will be able to provide specialist transport for some of our most frail clients."

THis isn't the first time Sue, of Pole Passion, has held an evening to raise money for charity.

In March last year, an evening organised by Sue raised more than £900 for My Sister's House, a charity supporting vulnerable women in Arun and Chichester districts.

THe previous year, over £500, as well as tinned and non-perishable goods, were given to the Bognor Regis foodbank.

Sue said: "We are absolutely delighted with the huge success of our event again this year and really pleased we raised such a good sum for a really worthwhile charity.

"We wanted to do something to help people with dementia, as many of our students have relatives who are suffering with this.

"After reading that social isolation was a predictor of dementia, I decided that Village Friends was a great opportunity to make a difference in terms of preventing this heartbreaking condition."

WEST SUSSEX County Council has refused to apologise to parents it threatened with prosecution for failing to make sure their daughter went to school.

THe girl started missing lessons due to ‘high levels of anxiety’ in 2015/16 and, by February, 2017, had stopped going completely.

In March, 2017, the council told her parents that it would be prosecuting them.

After investigating a complaint from the mother – Mrs X – the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman recommended that the council should not only apologise for the ‘injustice’ but pay the family £400.

THe mother’s complaint was that the council had failed to provide support or alternative education for her daughter while she was off school.

A meeting of the standards committee was told that, while the council usually accepted the ombudsman’s recommendations in full, in this case it would not do so.

Not only was the council confident that its team had done its job properly, there were fears that to apologise and pay up would set a precedent.

THe meeting was told that Mrs X felt her daughter should have been treated as if she had an illness – but the family continually failed to provide medical evidence to support that position.

THe prosecution was withdrawn in June, 2017, after a GP’s letter and psychologist’s report were provided.

Slipper swap LIBRARIES in the Post area are holding special ‘slipper swap’ events this month to help prevent falls.

Elderly residents across the county are being invited by West Sussex County Council to trade in their old slippers for a new pair, free of charge.

THese are just some of the events and activities taking place in West Sussex libraries as part of Wellbeing Month this March.

Other highlights include: • NHS health checks • Wellbeing MOTs • Sleep workshops • Creative activities with Mind • Yoga and Pilates taster sessions • ‘Storywalks’ for children Mood-boosting books will also be on display along with a selection of self-help guides.

Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “Our

libraries are at the very heart of our communities, bringing people together whatever their age.

“THere are some wonderful events taking place in March to help residents stay healthy and well.

“I would particularly encourage anyone worried about having a fall to bring their old slippers along to one of our Slipper Swaps. THis is such a simple way of reducing the risk of suffering a fall.”

` New salon

Badge frauds A TOTAL of 14 people have now been successfully prosecuted in the countywide clampdown on Blue Badge parking fraud.

In the most recent case, enforcement officers in Mid-Sussex saw a man using a badge that did not belong to him park on single-yellow lines near his workplace.

THe man was found guilty by a jury of using a Blue Badge with intent to deceive.

He now has a criminal record and has to pay fines and court costs totalling £7,500 (£1,500 in fines and £6,000 court costs).

Amanda Jupp, county council cabinet member for adults and health, said: "Blue Badge misuse is not only fraud, but it can mean that genuine, vulnerable users are deprived of vital services because parking spaces are taken by fraudsters.

"THis could include spaces near doctors’ surgeries, chemists or other community facilities."

Since August, 2017, county council officers have been working in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council and colleagues at all seven local district and borough councils to clamp down on Blue Badge misuse.

Officers, working with Sussex Police, have also issued a number of official warnings called community resolutions.

THese are offered in some circumstances as a first-level way of dealing with offences without taking people to court.

THey are formal warnings in which people agree to attend an information and education session where they learn about the consequences of their actions.

Since August, 2017, 14 cases have been sent for prosecution - all successful and a total of 100 people have completed a community resolution.

Eighty five Disabled Blue Badges have been destroyed in that time.

A POPULAR Chichester hairdressers has confirmed it's opening a new store in Bognor Regis.

Dance festival shows talents

THe two days of performances will celebrate the creative talents of local people with additional needs at the Riverside THeatre at Chichester College. Performances will start at 7pm for both Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

Performances will be from a variety of groups including Chichester Festival Youth THeatre Friday Late group, Chichester Down Syndrome Support Group and THeatre Inc. THe youth theatre is one of the most celebrate in the UK and aims to offer young people of all abilities from a variety of backgrounds the opportunity to lead a creative life. Its Friday Late group for young adults with additional needs offers a safe and encouraging environment in which people over 18 can develop their artistic and social skills.

THe support group is a charity supporting children and young adults and their families in the Chichester area. THey raise funds to support speech therapy and the Dance Crew, as well as offering vital support to families. THe Dance Crew were formed 18 months ago to produce a short film celebrating their talents for Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Kath Lake, who set up the group, said: "THe dance crew was set up in September, 2017, to create a dance video for world down syndrome day in March, 2018. THe video was such a success that the group has continued to dance under Suzanne Hill's expert guidance.

"It has been fantastic watching the

children gain in confidence and skills over the last year.

"THey now do dance displays with confidence and are gaining recognition in the local community. We are all so proud of them and everything they have achieved. THe group is feeling very honoured to be involved in FestivALL and the children are very excited about it."

THe title of dance is 'Unique... but all the same!' and is inspired by the characters and talents of the wonderful dancers in the group.

THe aim is for the group to show the audience that everyone is unique but in many ways, are all the same.

Children with Down Syndrome are often

underestimated and was choreographed

by Suzanne Hill and dancers.

THe music they will be dancing to is their mix of tracks, edited by Charlotte Mason, including Let's get ready to Rumble, I am the one and only, Can't stop the feeling and THis is me, as these are songs that celebrate being your own person.

Other performers include Delta 7, a seven-piece rock band from Eastbourne, Sg Troop, a small group of committed dancers interested in inclusive practice and integrated choreography and THeatre Inc, an award-winning specialised training company based at Chichester College. ` Veterans meet FORMER RAF personnel from Chichester have been invited to get together in Bognor Regis next week.

David Hewings, branch secretary of the town's RAFA branch, is opening up the bar in the RAFA Club from 11.30am to 3pm next THursday.

Finding old diary characters

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A COUPLE from Devon are looking to trace characters from a diary which they have found who they believe may have come from Chichester.

Hugh and Rosemary Smith, from Northam, in Devon, came into possession of the diary which they believe was found in the office of Rosemary's father after his death a few years ago.

In the diary, there is a reference to a young boy called John, who is Rosemary's father and Mrs Hooper (known as Bessie) was nanny to the children of Arthur and Elsie Gliddon who drove from Williton on August 18, 1920, to collect their son, John, arriving with his two brothers, Laity and Ronald, and his sister, Edith.

In the diary, under an entry dated, August 4, 1920, it says: "My Dear Mollie, the day has arrived at last, and we - the five 'Moorhens' are really on Exmoor.

"We left Chichester this morning by the 8.7 train and did not arrive here this evening until after 8.30pm..... We had to change at Fratton, Salisbury, Exeter and Dulverton.

"From Salisbury onwards the journey was quite new to us all. From Exeter to Dulverton, the scenery was lovely, we travelled on a single line up the Exe Valley and the river was sometimes on one side of us and sometimes on the other."

Mr Smith said: "It is our wish to try and make contact with any of the characters in the diary who might be able to tell

us more about these people, their backgrounds, names we do not have, because the author never revealed her name nor that of her mother.

"We have been to Dulverton on Exmoor, where we have been in contact with representatives of the Exmoor National Park, as well as THe Exmoor Society.

"THey are very interested, no excited, by this small look into life as it really was almost 100 years ago."

CAN You Forgive Me? tells the tale of Lee (Melissa McCarthy), a luckless writer, down at heel in the literary world, who hits on an ingenious cheat – forging letters from the famous to fuel her lifestyle of booze and feeding her cat. One afternoon, Lee’s in a bar, and in walks Jack Hawk (Richard E Grant), a sometime friend who is soon on board with her fraud, Grant, an Oscar-nominee, having the time of his life as an old roué. The film captures perfectly the grubby side of New York, the pain of loneliness and the joy of writing when it goes well. A gem.

In sharp contrast is On Her Shoulders, an intimate documentary about a 23-year-old woman who burst onto front pages worldwide when she won the Nobel Prize for Peace. Nadia Murad is a survivor of the 2014 Isis-led massacre of the non-Muslim Yazidi minority in Iraq. This arresting film critiques the limits of western compassion as it follows the Iraqi activist on her lonely human rights pilgrimage.

Beautiful Boy tells the story of Nic (Timothée Chalamet), a happy, well-adjusted child, who lives with his father David (Steve Carell) and stepmother (Maura Tierney) and starts to use crystal meth. The film documents that drug use, the parents' dawning realisation, and their attempts to understand and help. Can the beautiful boy retreat from that vicious, all-enveloping lifestyle choice or turn his back on his family?

Aftermath stars Keira Knightley as Rachael Morgan, wife to Lewis (Jason Clarke), who travels across Europe to Hamburg post-World War II to be reunited with him at a palatial home which he is helping to rebuild, the film about loss, reconciliation and the lasting impressions of war on both sides. Also starring Alexander Skarsgärd.

In 1969, Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk

on the Moon, is the subject of Damien Chazelle’s (La La Land) film, First Man, a poignant character study about a man who wants to isolate himself, not only from his family but from the rest of the world. Starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy as his wife.

Stanley Kubrick made one of the finest films, 2001, a Space Odyssey. Taking the director’s chair for Barry Lyndon in 1975, he cast Ryan O’Neal as Barry in the adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about an 18th century Irish rogue who kills his rival in a duel, joins the British army and heads to Prussia to fight in the Seven Years’ War. He’s a thug, a gambler, a traitor, a womaniser, a soldier and a loving father, the cinematography another reason to revisit this gloriously rich film or to see Kubrick’s magic for the first time.

Tribute to music of Dudley Moore Chris Ingham Quartet - The Jazz of Dudley Moore Chichester Jazz Club, Pallant Suite, 7 South Pallant, Chichester PO19 1SY Friday, March 15, at 7.45pm THE BELOVED comic actor Dudley Moore, who died in 2002, was also one of the UK’s most dazzling, swinging jazz pianists and composer of wit and depth.

Following their acclaimed Hoagy project, the Chris Ingham Quartet revisit Moore’s music on their own new CD Dudley, which they will showcase at Chichester Jazz Club.

THe playlist includes sounds from the fabulous 1960s Decca jazz albums, the television show Not Only But Also (1965-70) and the brilliant 1967 movie soundtracks for Bedazzled and 30 Is a Dangerous Age, Cynthia, produced the following year. THe Chris Ingham quartet comprises Chris on piano, trumpeter Paul Higgs, bass player Marianne Windham and George Double on drums.

Gilman (1876–1919) broke away from his contemporaries to produce a view of modern urban life in the early 20th century that was entirely distinct. He combined the gritty formality favoured by the Camden Town Group and his mentor, Walter Sickert, with the vitality of post-impressionism, with its thickly applied paint and vivid colours.

Gilman’s subject matter and manner of painting were unusual bedfellows. His paintings infused scenes of everyday domestic life with a vigour clearly influenced

Lunchtime recital at West Dean College Paul Wilmot piano recital The Old Library, West Dean College, West Dean PO18 0QZ Sunday, March 17, at 12.45pm www.westdean.org.uk A LUNCHTIME piano recital at West Dean College, north of Chichester, will feature Paul Wilmot, who was an organ scholar at University College, Oxford, where he studied under the renowned organist, David Sanger.

Graduating in 2003 with a first in oriental studies, he subsequently gained a master of studies from University College in 2004.

Paul then worked for the Clay Sanskrit Library, publishing a translation of THe Great Hall from the Mahabharata with the New York University Press, then in Mauritius as a repetiteur and writer for Opera Mauritius, and more recently as organist of the Vega archipelago in northern Norway.

All-female Scottish folk band journey south The Poozies St Alban's Church, Tilford Road, Hindhead GU26 6RB Friday, March 15, at 7.30pm TOP SCOTTISH folk band THe Poozies, first burst onto the scene in 1991, when folk musicians wore elaborately-patterned woolly jumpers and were only seen in dingy back rooms and very late at night on BBC2.

THen, as now, the folk scene was very maledominated and so a conscious decision was made to form an ‘all-female’ band. As with most bands that have been on the road for so long, there have been various lineup changes but throughout the years THe Poozies have continued to tour worldwide

and attracted recognition and appreciation for their eclectic choice of material, unusual and exciting arrangements, and heart-tugging vocal harmonies.

Both Kate Rusby and Sally Barker, of THe Voice, are former members of the band. Today, THe Poozies comprises Mary Macmaster (electro-harp, vocals), Eilidh Shaw (fiddle, vocals), Sarah McFadyen (fiddle, banjo, guitar, vocals) and Tia Files (guitar, percussion, fiddle, vocals).

Mother's Day Treat at Denmans Garden Oasis of calm all year round WHEN the gardeners at Denmans Gardens finished planting 8,000 bulbs last autumn, their only reward was putting away their bulb planters and trowels.

THe spring-like weather this week, however, has brought forward their real reward as pale yellow, white, and lavender crocuses have begun to bloom blending with the other crocus, snowdrops, and winter aconites that have naturalized at Denmans. February-Gold daffodils have popped and winter witch hazel, camellias, and sweet-box add an elusive fragrance to these February days.

Recounting the site’s history, which was part of an estate owned by Lord Denmans in the late-1800’s before being requisitioned by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chairman of the JohnBrookes Denmans Foundation, said that Joyce and her husband grew vegetables and cut-flowers at Denmans for the market in Covent Garden. Joyce later converted it to a unique ornamental garden which John Brookes redesigned during his 35+ years at Denmans.

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

Work on renovating structures in the intimate contemporary garden is well under way and other renovations are on the calendar. THe past year’s pruning and replanting is

evident everywhere. Gwendolyn said that “visitors are consistently impressed which is encouraging.”

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn

praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

Thai delights from a family tradition direct to your plate

As we were being seated for lunch, the couple at the next table were putting their coats on to leave and merrily assured us we’d enjoy our meal. THeir good wishes clearly weren’t unfounded as we heard the gentleman at the table behind explain that he hadn’t had dinner the night before so he could order two main meals.

THe extensive menu was enough to tempt us to over-order, too, though we sensibly began with a platter of mixed starters to share. We expected the standard selection of enjoyable but often boughtin and forgettable chicken satay sticks, crab cakes and spring rolls with the obligatory sweet chilli dip.

Instead, we received truly restaurant quality morsels, brought to the table by executive chef Kit Khunia who delighted in explaining which of the five freshly made sauces complemented each food.

Like all good chefs, Kit began cooking at a young age with his mother. At the age of ten he was promoted from carrying and washing up to actual cooking and by 12 he became her official taste tester.

His professional career followed a similar trajectory, working his way up through cheffing positions to come full circle as a taster in Mayfair restaurants and five star hotels.

Tuptim Siam has given him the opportunity to come back to his passion of creating dishes personally for

customers with whom he delights in interacting.

Special dishes are even ordered ‘off menu’ by regulars and Kit loves the creativity - though does request that you phone in advance if you would like him to prepare something not listed on the menu.

Having been tipped off, we were lucky enough to sample one of these, a beef massaman which is only available on THursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as it is

cooked to a sweetly melting tenderness for three hours.

My friend was less enthusiastic about tryong the sweet and sour chicken - one of Tuptim's most popular dishes - as she usually finds it a sugary, synthetic disappointment. She was soon eating her words however, with sticky moreish mouthfuls of chicken and the loquacious Kit was happy to provide the answer; no

artificial colours or flavourings are used in any of his dishes and the balance of sweetness is created with fruit juices instead.

Even the side dishes were praise-worthy. We plumped for the special fried rice, which lived up to its name, being great fluffy grains interspersed with enormous prawns, chicken, peppers and alive with flavour.

Desserts, aside from ice cream, are usually only available at the popular Sunday buffets. THese are lunchtime extravaganzas of well known favourites and exotic flavours, with a selection and variety you won’t know how to say no to. THe fourth Sunday of every month switches to an evening buffet, at which you’ll need to book or risk not getting a seat.

We tottered out in to the fresh air to walk off some of our over-indulgence along the beach, vowing to come again very soon and clutching the bag of leftovers we couldn’t bear to leave behind.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshly-made tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish dishes.

A tapas banquet for four people at £19.50 is popular for groups with a selection across the menu but my husband and I, with help from Beyhan, settled in comfortable chairs, made our own choices from the vegetarian, meat and chicken, and fish and seafood sections, washed down with a house white pinot grigio

Treat mum to Spanish tapas and opera at city's restaurant MOTHERS can be wined and dined on delicious tapas food at a popular Mediterranean restaurant this month.

Children can treat their loved ones to speciality dishes from the region along with a free glass of prosecco or wine for Mother's Day. Key to the happy ambience of the converted wine cellar is the philosophy of owner Beyhan Cumali who treats everyone as guests rather than customers.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

BROCCOLI SPROUT - a threeday old sprout contains between 20 and 100 times more goodness then the broccoli itself

• Make sure the jar that you choose is clean and oil-free • Use just a small handful of one type of seeds (because they expand in the jar) • Pour clean water onto your seeds, up to an inch over the height of the seeds • Cover the jar if it’s not a professional sprouting jar, with a mesh lid, as all that matters here is that nothing else can get into the jar except air.

And that is a must!

• Leave the jar with the water in to soak overnight. THe next morning, drain off the water thoroughly and rinse the contents of your jar • Drain off the water by preferably leaving the jar upside down. THis is the point your sprouting could potentially go wrong. If you don't drain properly and leave them in water your seeds could go rancid before they sprout. (you would smell it if this happens) You must drain and leave them without water. You then need to rinse your sprouts twice per day, draining each time.

• Leave in the light, but not in direct sun light. In 2-5 days your little seeds will be showing baby shoots, and this is when they are ready to eat.

When they are ready to eat you can pop them in an airtight container and keep in the fridge. THey will last for at least five days so eat them quickly!

You can then begin sprouting your next new jar so you always have an array of fresh sprouts on the go and can add them to everything you eat!

Community News & Views A BRAND new mobile app has launched to help members of the armed forces community in West Sussex and the south east access support.

THe free Forces Connect app is aimed at serving personnel, veterans, and their families as well as public sector organisations.

In just four clicks, they can find local services and organisations offering support.

Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for safer stronger communities, said: “THis is a fantastic app that has the potential to make a real difference to the armed forces community here in West Sussex.

“It is really simple to use and I would strongly encourage as many people as possible to make the most of it.”

THe app was commissioned by Forces Connect South East, a partnership involving the county council and councils of Surrey, Kent, East Sussex, Brighton and Hove and Medway and Sussex NHS, which secured Ministry of Defence grant funding for projects which make it easier for military personnel to access support.

A SERIES of free-to-attend events has been launched by the Chichester Community Development Trust to showcase the incredible talent that runs throughout the region.

IT WAS a different kind of two little ducks, as a night of bingo was held by Chichester Canal volunteers to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Following the recent loss of canal volunteer Judy Saxon, her family had asked that donations to St Wilfrid's Hospice be considered.

Around 40 canal volunteers and their partners came together for a fun evening of conversation and laughter.

THe first two games took place with Andrew Gibson and Dudley Pound calling. THe room was alive with the numbers appropriate nickname being echoed back to them.

LA Fish, who, when they learned that all monies raised for the night would be going to St Wilfrid's hospice, refused to submit a bill, provided the

delicious fish and chip supper.

A raffle held by Andrew and Clare Gibson followed, before another two games of bingo finished off the night.

Trustee Catherine Cannon said: "It was a wonderful occasion and gave great pleasure to the Chichester Canal volunteers to see Dudley Pound, pictured above, to be able to hand over a cheque of £507 over to St Wilfrid's Hospice."

Dudley said: "THis sum was above and beyond what anyone expected to raise, thanks in a large part to the generosity of LA Fish.

"A huge and sincere to all those who attended the event, to those who helped to organise it, those who donated to the raffle and an extra special thank you to Adam at LA Fish."

NHS ENGLAND Nutrition and Hydration Week is next week, Monday to Sunday.

Mr Barnaby Chappell, consultant urological surgeon for Western Sussex Hospital Foundation Trust, said: "Nutrition and Hydration Week is an important annual campaign which focuses on promoting awareness and encouraging people to ensure good nutrition and hydration as part of their daily diet.

"Medical evidence also shows that good nutrition and hydration can assist in preventing urological conditions such as kidney stones, prostate problems, bladder irritation and other symptoms. It is also recognised that it helps to keep you alert and feel generally healthier."

Advice for staying hydrated and making healthy choices to keep your urological health tip-top includes: Drink plenty of water- maintaining a healthy intake of fluids helps flush bacteria and toxins out of your body and can reduce the risk of bladder infection, kidney stones and UTIs. So, be sure to keep well hydrated, especially when engaging in exercise or activities that cause a lot of sweating. Also think about the amount of caffeine and alcohol in your diet as both act as a diuretic and may irritate your bladder.

Certain foods known to be bladder irritants include artificial sweeteners found in diet soft drinks, acidic food and drinks, such as citrus, tomatoes and apples, and spicy foods. Most people aren’t aware that meat is acidic and can irritate the bladder, while lowering gluten intake can help to reduce irritation and decrease urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence.

If you’re prone to kidney stones you should try to avoid oxalate-rich foods such as rhubarb, celery, spinach, beetroot and sesame seeds, all of which have a very high oxalate content.

Black tea, chocolate, nuts (including peanut butter), cocoa and carob are all moderately high in oxalate. You should take them in moderation but you do not need to exclude them completely.

Avoid tinned, packet or processed foods such as soups, salted crisps or nuts, tinned meats, meat paste, smoked fish and fish paste, all of which have a high salt content.

We all know fruit and vegetables are required for healthy bodily function and fibre too, helps reduce constipation, which we know can impact on bladder health. It's especially important to maintain a healthy diet to prevent prostate problems. THe usual advice to eat green vegetables and vitamin-rich fruits holds true, so you should consume at least five to seven servings of fruit and vegetables every day.

AROUND 13 swimmers turned out last month to take part in St Wilfrid's Church, Selsey's annual Swithathon.

THe hard-working social and find raising committee decided to reach out into the community in Selsey and put together a team of swimmers to obtain sponsors and swim for a new boiler at St Wilfrid's or for Selsey Community First Responders or 50/50.

THe response was positive and the 13 swimmers of all age groups swam a grand total of 776 x25 metre lengths (around 12 miles) in just two and a half hours.

THe team comprised St Wilfrid's parishioners, friends and families, and supporters of Selsey Community First Responders.

Host for the event was, as usual, THe Oasis at Bunn

Leisure, West Sands, Selsey, who welcomed the team and generously allowed them to swim completely free, giving over three swimming lanes for the duration.

A group of scorers and supporters also turned up and each swimmer received a certificate stating the number of lengths completed.

THe result of the event was in two parts.

First, there was a tremendous community spirit between everyone involved .

Secondly, £2,000 was raised with £1,230 going to Selsey First Responders and £670 to St Wilfrid's Church Building Maintenance Fund.

St Wilfrid’s and Selsey Community First Responders wish to thank everyone involved in any way with this successful event.

CHICHESTER Conservation Volunteers have clocked up 36 years of tree planting, woodland management and habitat improvement at a variety of sites around Chichester.

A healthy natural environment is one of the best allies in the fight to halt climate change and improve air quality and most Sundays you can find the team enjoying a day out in the Sussex countryside working on a wide range of habitats including woodlands, hedgerows, grassland, waterways and wetlands.

THe tasks are very sociable with plenty of time for tea and chat, and they get to see little known areas of Sussex and learn a lot about the ecology of the worksites from the knowledgeable wardens who guide them.

As well as learning countryside skills it’s an opportunity to improve physical fitness and mental health and wellbeing while enhancing the environment.

New volunteers are always welcome and there are jobs for all abilities, from a little light snipping to heavy woodland work.

The history of the Chichester City Club

By Portia Tremlett, museum assistant INITIALLY known as the Chichester Working Men’s Club and Institute, the club was established in 1863 by Walter Farquhar Hook, who had been installed as Dean of Chichester in 1859.

THe original purpose of the club was to provide a recreational space for the considerable number of workmen restoring the cathedral spire, which had collapsed in February, 1861, as well as other workmen in the city. Dean Hook purchased premises at 13 North Pallant and opened the club.

Very little is known about the early club, as the records were unfortunately destroyed by a fire in the assistant secretary’s premises.

It is thought that the first premises in North Pallant housed a single room for the club.

However, its exact size is unknown. At some point between 1879 and 1897 the club’s name changed to the Chichester City Club, as it remains known today.

A book of rules survives from 1879 that gives a fascinating insight into the everyday activities of members of the club. Its president was John Russell Walker, Archdeacon of Chichester, who was accompanied by 13 vicepresidents and trustees, a committee of 12, a treasurer, two secretaries and a custodian.

Members were able to read the papers and play games from 10am until 11pm and the annual subscription charge was 6s alongside an entrance fee of 1s. Gambling, dogs and intoxicants were banned and offensive behaviour or bad language could lead to an expulsion.

Although card games were a popular pastime, billiards was a focal point for the club. THe tradition of a monthly flyer handicap still continues to this day, and many matches had prizes, including 30 shillings for

first prize, a pair of trousers for second prize, and an umbrella for third!

In 1913, Charlie Howard, who ran a wellknown photography shop and who was a prominent member of society, donated some clocks which were used for the monthly handicap prizes.

In 1919, a memorial clock was unveiled by the Mayor of Chichester at 11am on November 11, which recorded club members who had given their lives during the First World War. THis can still be seen in the club today. THe club was prolific during the war, collecting for war charities and offering wounded soldiers honorary membership.

It was the early 1900s that saw the greatest period of change for the club. Alcohol, although previously banned, was sold on the site, as the club’s financial situation had become an area of concern. THis in turn saw a change in opening hours to accommodate the sale of alcohol, and Sunday evening opening hours were introduced in 1921 until 1948.

In 1961, associate membership was opened up to women, although only to use the front bar (now called Pallant Bar). It was not until 2003 that other spaces in the club were opened up to women after they were allowed full membership.

THe building has gone through many bouts of change. In 1954, it was redecorated by members of the club in an attempt to save money and revitalise the membership, in 1982 an extension was added to create a dining and entertainment area, and the two buildings were knocked into one.

Battling Blues look to ease fears of PostSport the drop in crunch Chobham clash CHICHESTER RFC's rollercoaster season rolls on as the Blues just can't seem to shake off relegation talk.

THe Oaklands Park side are tenth in the 14-team London South One, just five points above the bottom three.

Blues missed out on the chance to extend that gap when they suffered a 31-26 reverse at London Cornish last weekend.

Even though Chi came back from south west London with a losing bonus point, it is wins which are needed to ease any nerves.

Paul Colley's side can do that tomorrow when they welcome ninth-place Chobham to Oaklands (2.30pm).

After suffering two defeats in a row, Chi will want to recapture the killer instinct which they displayed in early February when they defeated local rivals Havant and league leaders Brighton in consecutive weeks.

Blues started well against Cornish with scrum half Harry Seaman diving over for an early try. THe hosts hit back with two scores but a penalty and drop kick from fly half Henry Anscombe along with a Declan Johnson try put Blues in at the break 14-18 up.

After the turnaround, Cornish came out the

stronger and scored their third to take the lead.

Matt McLagan put Chi back in front but the hosts replied just four minutes later. 28-23.

Anscombe added a penalty but, despite Cornish being reduced to 14, Blues just could not find the killer instinct and convert a long possession in the opposing 22. Instead it was the hosts who rounded off the scoring leaving Blues to rue what could have been.

In Hampshire Premier, second-place Bognor will look to extend their winning run to seven when they welcome Fareham Heathens to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens beat Portsmouth IIs 54-23 away last time out.

--Chichester RFC paid tribute to former club president Derek Parker who passed away last week.

Derek, who was chairman and then president from 1978 to 1988, was instrumental in designing and building the first permanent home for the club.

A club statement said: "Derek took great interest in everyday matters and for many years refereed the lower sides in his own inimitable style. A true clubman and a true Chichester RFC man."

CHICHESTER flyer Jess Breach will be looking for personal and team glory as she continues to star in England's hunt for a Six Nations Grand Slam.

THe 21-year-old has been in sparkling form for the Red Roses, racking up an amazing tally of 16 tries in just six international appearances.

THat form has continued in the Women's Six Nations where Breach has scored five in the tournament so far - including braces against last year's winners, France, and Wales, last time out.

THe former Chichester RFC youngster will want to continue that form in round four when the Red Roses take on surprise package Italy (tomorrow, 12.05pm).

With over 8,700 tickets currently sold for the clash in Exeter, the match will be a record breaker, being the highest attendance for a Red Roses’ home fixture outside the World Cup. For Breach it will be another chance to impress in the 14 shirt which she has made her own since returning from the England

Sevens programme.

After six tries on her debut against Canada in November, 2017, the Harlequins Ladies wing has scored in every England game she has featured in.

THe brace against Wales showed off a range of the skills, much to the delight of England head coach Simon Middleton.

First there was a cool finish out wide to round off a free-flowing attack from England.

THen, following some wonderful offloading by the backline, Breach added her second when she handed off and broke through.

Speaking after the Wales win, England coach Middleton: “We’re really pleased with the result – to score 50 points in any game is impressive but to score 50 today is testament to some skilful play and down to staying in the game and overcoming some frustration to finish strong.

“Wales were incredibly strong and when they had the ball it was so difficult to get it back off of them so we really had to work for it.”

YOUTH RUGBY: Bognor under-17s Colts side were celebrating double success last weekend.

As the team continued their unbeaten run with a 57-12 victory over the Isle of Wight colts team at a rain-soaked Hampshire Avenue, four of the squad were at Maidenhead RFC playing for Sussex under 17s against Berkshire.

Alfie Spurle (scrum half ), Lewis Decarteret (wing), George Orchard (second row) and Bradley Smith (Number 8) all featured in the match for the county side.

THey look to build on their success as they next take on Surrey at the end of this month.

Elsewhere, Chichester U12s hosted East Grinstead for the first game of the Phase 2 Sussex Waterfall competition THrough sustained pressure and the will to win the 50/50 ball, Chi applied the pressure throught the whole game on their newly-promoted opponents.

With tries coming from Jaiden Cloke, Jonah Hutchings and Archie Ross it was a excellent demonstration of teamwork and 'grit'. A good start to Phase 2, but, with areas of improvement noted by the coaches.

Lions left licking their wounds after heavy loss and key injury

Hundreds set for city race HUNDREDS of runners will return to the streets of Chichester as the second leg of the Corporate Challenge gets underway on Wednesday.

More than 800 people of all ages took part in the first event a little over a week ago.

Taking place over a course of 700 metres, everyone from primary school pupils to former Olympic athletes runs laps which start and finish at the Assembly Rooms.

THe event on Wednesday, which is the second of three legs, will see junior races starting at 6.30pm with the adult events from 7.30pm.

Jonathan White, of Solent MD, was the first person home in the first race, completing the 4,500 metre course in an impressive 13 mins 26 seconds.

THis was well clear of Jack Woods (Worthing Hares 13:44) and Ethan Fincham (Team Synergy - 13:47).

THe first female home was Cassie THorp (Solent MD 15:49) followed by team mate Katie Hopkins (16:07).

Chi Uni's Alice Wright was the first home-grown athlete home in the women's standings with a time of 16:13.

In the youth races, the first home were Isaac Glanfield

(Downview, primary boys - 4:45), Florence East (Lyndhurst, primary girls 4:48), Oliva East (Mayfield, Year 9 & 10 girls - 6:59), Hattie Bond (Petersfield School, year 7 & 8 girls - 7:47), Cameron Walker-Powell (Mayville High, Year 9 & 10 boys - 9:14) and Harvey McGuinness (Bishop Luffa, secondary boys - 6:51).

Away from the city, Helen Dean will be flying the Chichester Runners flag as she takes part in the Age Groups Masters England 10k Championships.

THe Selsey-based runner qualified for the event after running a personal best of 44.11 at the Chichester Priory 10k last month.

Competing for England in the over 60s category, Helen will be up against some of the best runners from around the UK in the event.

Another Chi runner who has been on international duty is Mike Houston.

THe man known locally as 'Mr Park Run' competed for Scotland in the Tokyo Marathon last week finishing in an excellent time of 2:38.

PAGHAM'S joint-managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen will be looking for an upturn in fortunes as the Lions' poor run continues.

THe Nyetimber Lane side have won just once in their last seven matches, the latest of which was a 5-0 home defeat to Eastbourne Town.

Even though the visitors are flying and chasing a promotion spot, the loss - the club's heaviest all season - gives those in charge plenty to think about.

Simmonds and Hellen, who had an excellent first year in charge of the club, will be looking for a reaction tomorrow when the Lions head to Hassocks (3pm).

Even though the pair have the support of the board, the club will want to see a young squad end the season on a positive note.

THe management duo will have their work cut out though, particularly given that leading scorer Dan Simmonds is likely to be out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury sustained in the loss to Town.

With eight games of the season and Pagham sitting 10th, a top half finish in the SCFL Premier should be the bare minimum for a side who were challenging for the top two until just before Christmas.

City continue to lead the way

CHICHESTER City's march to the SCFL Premier title continues as the Oaklands Park side take a nine point lead into the final two months of the season.

Miles Rutherford and Graham Gee's side have seen the goals dry up in recent months as the club get ever closer to lifting the county league crown.

But, points rather than performances are what matters at this stage of the campaign with Chi wrapping up their second 1-0 win in a row with a tight victory over bottom side Eastbourne United last time out.

Next up is a trip to Lancing tomorrow (3pm) with Chi looking to extend a 16 game unbeaten run in the league.

THey will need to show the same determination against the Lancers as they did last weekend, when United proved to be a lot tougher than their league position suggests.

Kaleem Haitham was the match winner for Chi, latching on to a through ball from Josh Clack to poke home just after the interval.

City had to hang on with the visitors wasting a late chance and having a late penalty appeal waved away by the referee.

City’s nearest title rivals, Newhaven, also won 1-0 so the gap between first and second place remains nine points, with the Dockers still having a game in hand.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey will be looking to keep up the pressure on the top four as they welcome Mile Oak to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Blues are currently fifth in the league, having lost just once in the league in the last three months.

A Jordan Warren brace for Daren Pearce's side against Billingshurst last time out means they continue to sit four points behind the top four.

Meanwhile, mid-table Sidlesham have a top half finish in their sights as they head to Seaford Town tomorrow (3pm).

Steve Bailey's side have impressed on their return to senior football and now sit tenth after a narrow 1-0 win over Oakwood last weekend, with captain Robert Madden getting the winner.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to build on a five-star show last time out as they welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins defeated Jarvis Brook 5-3 last weekend thanks to goals from George Briance (2), Alex Barnes, Alex Jarrom and Kieran Magee.

Bosham lost 2-1 to Dean in the reverse fixture five weeks ago.

Chi coach: we must start games quicker CHICHESTER City Ladies coach Craig Burns is calling on his side to continue to progress as they look to cement their position in the top two of the FA Women's Southern Premier.

THe Oaklands Park side have stumbled in recent weeks, losing three of their last five in the league.

THose results have seen Chi slip off top spot.

With seven matches still to play and teams below them in hot pursuit, City will want to ensure their good start to the campaign does not end in disappointment.

After a 4-2 loss at Cardiff City a fortnight ago - which was all but sealed by three first half goals for the hosts, the Chi coaches are hoping their side will come out firing when they host Loughborough Foxes on Sunday (2pm).

When asked about the poor start away in south Wales, goalkeeper coach Burns said: "Maybe it's a confidence thing or perhaps people switched off after a long journey. We need to be quicker out of the blocks."

City were due to play Queens Park Rangers last weekend at Bognor's Nyewood Lane but the match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

All the focus now is on a home match against the Foxes at Oaklands on Sunday.

Burns said: "It's the progress of going from Oxford where we [won 1-0 but] didn't create chances to Cardiff where we did and now we have to take them. We're putting that game behind us now, we've taken the positives and now we're moving forward."

Rocks boss believes playoff race will go right to the wire Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the hunt for playoff places will come down to the last game of the season.

THe Nyewood Lane side sit seventh in the Bostik Premier after a last minute goal denied them a morale-boosting win over local rivals Worthing.

An injury-hit Rocks side were hanging on to a 2-1 lead when Jesse Starkey struck late for the Rebels.

It was a tough result to take for the majority of the 1,100-plus who packed into the Nye Camp for the match.

But, while the result against a Worthing side who are packed full of former Rocks and competing Bognor for a place in the playoffs will feel like a loss, Pearce believes there's still plenty to fight for as the season enters its final two months.

THe run in starts tomorrow with a trip to the Kent coast to play Margate, who are unbeaten in their last five matches.

Pearce said: "It's not a must win but the position we are in with the games we have left it would be handy to win.

"When you look at this league, where everyone is beating each other, it could go to the last game of the season where four teams could be fighting for a single spot. It will go like this right to the end of the season."

Rocks looked like they would be taking maximum points off the Rebels after a

composed first half against their Sussex rivals.

Mason Walsh and Joe Tomlinson put Bognor two up at the break before former Rock James Crane halved the deficit with a penalty. THen Starkey struck late with the equaliser.

THe biggest issue for Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake is trying to find a full squad of fit players.

Of those on the creaking treatment table at Nyewood Lane, Gary Charman and Jimmy Wild are unlikely to play again this season, while leading scorer Jimmy Muitt will be missing again tomorrow.

Calvin Davies and Doug Tuck, who both came off in the draw against Worthing, are also major doubts.

Others carrying knocks are Mason Walsh, Keaton Wood and on-loan Portsmouth forward Leon Maloney Pearce said: "It's a problem. I can be held responsible for a lot of things but can't do anything about that.

"THis past week we had more on the treatment table than we did at training. It's difficult trying to find replacements plus we also have the cost of paying those not available.

"It's a challenge - if you look at where we were a fortnight ago when we had it confirmed that Dan [Smith - who's now at Cork City] and Brad Lethbridge were staying for season and Keaton and Calvin were fit, now that's all changed."

Davies injury blow for Bognor HIS return from injury was supposed to start the Rocks run into the playoffs.

But, just a fortnight after returning to the Bognor side, influential right back Calvin Davies is back on the treatment table - and is unlikely to recover in time to feature for the rest of the season.

THe former Portsmouth player has been influential to the Rocks in recent years, giving the Nyewood Lane side an extra option when they burst forward.

But a knee injury sustained in the autumn has kept Davies out of the starting line-up for more than two months.

Rocks nursed him back to health gradually, easing him back into the starting eleven.

But in the second half of the 2-2 draw with Worthing, Davies went down in agony with early assessments showing it's a repeat of his knee injury.

Pearce said: "I will be surprised if he plays again this year - he may do but I will be surprised.

"He was out for a long time last time and it's the same knee and same injury. He may be back for last game of the season or the playoffs, if we make it, but we will have to wait and see."

IT'S fair to say it took me a good day of two to get over last weekend's draw with rivals Worthing.

I was still seething about it on Monday, especially the way it all played out in the second half.

First half I was almost surprised at how we managed to play and manage the match.

We let them dominate possession but when the chances came along we took them - something a lot of Rocks fans have been calling for all year!

At times, it almost felt like an away game - except for the crowd of course who were excellent at urging the Rocks on.

It was just a shame that it slipped away from us right at the end.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was thinking that the equaliser was coming.

All that pressure and all those corners was not good for the heart rate and decisions just didn't go our way.

It was good the final whistle came when it did, as if we had played another five or ten minutes I think Worthing would have got a winner.

THe only bonus was we got a point, which was a lot more positive result than the one the week before against Haringey, who look like they will be top three by the end of the year.

Dorking, I think, have won it so now it's all about who will finish in those four spots below them.

I have got a feeling that Worthing will make the playoffs as they have strength in depth and players coming back to fitness.

I just don't know if we will join them!

If we get all the players fit then we could make a charge. But injuries are hurting us at the moment, with some important players not available at the time it really matters.

Jimmy Muitt, who missed the Worthing match, will be

important as it lifts the team when he scores.

It looks like Calvin is injured again (although I think he's up again walking) and Mason Walsh also came off with a knee injury.

All these things just seem to happen at once although I did hear the physio saying that Calvin's injury is not as bad as it looks - fingers crossed!

Picking up one point from two home matches means we are now down to seventh in the table.

Next up is Margate who are struggling so we have to get a result there.

It is amazing what one win could do - one week we're down and out and the next we're back up in the playoffs.

With nine matches left, though, we have to start picking up points sooner rather than later.

We have some tough games to come, such as Enfield and Wingate, both of whom we have struggled to beat.

Dorking away in April will also be very difficult although home matches against Leatherhead, Whitehawk and Harlow should give us a chance.

I just hope it doesn’t come down to the last game of the season but it invariably does!

Everyone I've spoken to remains slightly optimistic but perhaps we have not got the team to make it this year.

THere's also the semi final of the Sussex Senior Cup to look forward to, which has now be rearranged for March 19 due to Brighton not being able to get a side together.

It does seem odd that a club that big is struggling and it does seem like they are being difficult.

But a lot of fans are not minding the rescheduling as it means the match is now at Nyewood Lane, which is a bonus for us.

Before then, though, we have two big matches in the league.

A single sheet of glass is used for both the windscreen and roof, flowing from the base of the A-pillar and over the cabin to create a vast sky-window, before tapering into a double-bubble over the rear passenger compartment. The rakishness of the car’s high shoulders and narrow glasshouse is further enhanced by an illustrated dynamic streak that draws the eye from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.

Guillaume and his team fully exploited the chassis architecture of the powertrain’s all-electric layout to maximise cabin space and create an airy and spacious interior. In a humorous riposte to the industry’s current

obsession with ever increasing dashboard screens, the concept features 21 individual ultra high-resolution screens. These curve their synchronised way across the top of the dashboard in a layout that’s at the same time both casual and coordinated.

“I believe that our unorthodox approach to electrification fired our collective imagination,” says Guillaume. “It enabled us to envisage a future where engaging and dynamic cars like this were an integral part of our transport requirements.
