Five weeks too long campaign

A CAMPAIGN set up to help those on universal credit could be useful for people in Chichester living on the benefit.

THe Trussell Trust, a national antipoverty charity which runs a network of more than 420 foodbanks, has started a campaign to help those who are enrolled on universal credit and are forced to wait

for the first payment.

On their website, it said: "From the very start, everyone who applies has to wait at least five weeks for a first payment – some people are left waiting longer. THis is leaving many without enough money to cover the basics.

"Even when an application goes to plan and the wait lasts five weeks, many people are still referred to food banks struggling with debt, rent arrears and issues with mental health. THere are other problems

kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A FORMER mayor and current councillor has said that Chichester BID and the district council are in denial about what is happening to the city centre.

Cllr Richard Plowman, a city and district councillor, is the current town crier and was mayor of the city in 2005/06 when he says the city was thriving.

He said: "I remember going out as Mayor on Wednesdays and greeting coachloads of visitors from Wales and all over the country coming to Chichester for its market and fine shops.

"THe array of high quality independent retailers attracted what my mother used to call the county set and they made Chichester their favourite destination.

"Luckily, the festival theatre thrives and also New Park Cinema, although evening car park charges surely went against the vision of promoting our evening economy.

"THe result of this is a 20 per cent reduction in footfall despite the increase in housing at Graylingwell, Rousillion Park, Barnfield Drive and other developments. THe main reason people visit Chichester is to go to the bank or building society "So why has the city centre declined more than elsewhere? Most people believe it is due to the high rent and rates as Chichester was rated as one of the best places to live. THe ever-increasing car park charges, including Sunday, and selective evening car park charges have all had an impact given what is now a much less attractive Chichester offer.

"THe district council is now budgeting £300,000 less income in car parking due to the economy."

Cllr Plowman believed the need to

improve the streetscape of Chichester had been identified in 2005 and many thousands of pounds on consultants had been spent but nothing delivered.

He continued: "THe evidence of this can be quite clearly be seen in the strip of test paving half way up North Street and the appearance and disappearance of the inappropriate monolith signs.

"THe old uneven pavements regularly take the toll of visitors. Many have stopped coming because of the fear of falling over. THe shopfronts are mainly tired and in a poor condition.

"THe city council initiatives, such as cleaning up the Cross, Chichester in Bloom and the Heritage Street lighting, have helped but the overall trend is towards a tired city centre. Even the good Christmas lights couldn’t cheer up the dull Christmas shop displays.

Housing budget cuts called immoral by county councillor WEST SUSSEX County Council’s decision to cut millions from housingrelated support over the next two years has been branded ‘immoral’.

THe service helps to fund homelessness charities such as Crawley Open House and Chichesterbased Stonepillow – and the council has been warned that cutting money would make the county ‘less safe’ and lead to an increase in deaths among rough sleepers.

THe decision to reduce the £6.3m budget to £4.6m in 2019/20 and then to £2.3m in 2020/21 was defended by leader Louise Goldsmith and Amanda Jupp, cabinet member for adults and health, at a meeting of the full council on Friday.

But Cllr Francis Oppler said: “THis council is choosing to make this particular cut of £4m from supported housing. It’s not being forced upon us – it is a choice.

"THe decision for me is just immoral.”

She said the council had set aside £750k to help charities during the transition – though each would have to bid for a share.

Mrs Goldsmith also announced that West Sussex had successfully bid for a share of the government’s Rapid Rehousing Pathway funding (a government fund to help rough sleepers) and should receive around £336,000.

Added to the £750,000, that made just under £1.1m to ‘help support those housing charities to ensure we change and move forward so we all play that important role to help the homeless and help them off the streets’.

She told the meeting this year’s budget had been the ‘hardest yet’ to set and it had been decided to focus mainly on the council's statutory duties.

THe charity, which trains assistance dogs for disabled people, was chosen

by Goodwood staff and will benefit from fundraising at events across the Goodwood Estate, as well as providing volunteering opportunities for all Goodwood employees.

THe Duke of Richmond said: "Our aim is to help transform the lives of as

many people as possible by supporting the breeding and training of these remarkable assistance dogs.

"Our staff are motivated and enthusiastic, both in their fundraising efforts and in their commitment to volunteering, and we are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile local charity."

In addition to various internal fundraising efforts, Goodwood aims to raise money for the canine cause with events open to all its members, as well as to the public.

Ideas range from doggy-themed afternoon teas for four-legged guests and their owners at members' clubhouse, THe Kennels, to the annual dog show,

as well as events at the racecourse and perhaps even a pop-up outdoor cinema in summer, showing a dog-friendly film.

"We are delighted that the Goodwood Estate has chosen us as its charity of the year for 2019 and 2020," said Jackie Staunton, chair of trustees for Canine Partners.

"We are very excited about this fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of Canine Partners and generate vital funds to enable us to continue our lifetransforming work.

"Our partnership with Goodwood will ensure that we are able to train even more amazing dogs to help adults living with physical disabilities."

THe Trussell Trust states on its website: "When universal credit goes live in an area, there is a demonstrable increase in demand in local Trussell Trust foodbanks.

"On average, 12 months after rollout, foodbanks see a 52 per cent increase in demand, compared to 13 per cent in areas with universal credit for three months or less.

"THis increase cannot be attributed to randomness and exists even after accounting for seasonal and other variations."

Gillian Keegan, the city's MP, said of the issue: "THe roll out of universal credit has had its issues. However, the Government has listened and learned.

"Currently, those making a new claim for universal credit can receive advances of up to 100 per cent of their benefit. All advances are paid within three working days, with payments to

those in need processed on the same day.

"I have visited the Chichester Job Centre Plus several times including with the Minister of State responsible for universal credit, Guy Opperman, and my team are in frequent communication with the team there.

"I was very impressed with the dedicated work coaches who help provide tailored support to claimants and give them a single point of contact.

"I have also been to both Midhurst and Chichester foodbanks where I spoke with staff at the centres to better understand the situation.

"Recently, I met with the Secretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions, Amber Rudd, to discuss universal credit and its roll out and how it will be managed.

"Chichester has only been partially rolled out so those who are on the scheme are either new claimants or those who have had a change in circumstance relating to their legacy benefits."

` Parking plan PROPOSALS for tackling growing pressure on on-street parking in Chichester will be put forward for consultation next week.

Feedback on the city-wide Parking Management Plan, as featured in the Chichester Post on Friday, February 8, is being encouraged, with an online consultation going live from Friday, March 1, and four drop-in exhibitions arranged.

Roger Elkins, cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “With new housing, plus business and retail expansion in the Chichester area, parking problems will only intensify. THey could have an increasing impact in areas that currently have no parking restrictions, which is why we want to be proactive and plan now, rather than wait and be forced to react when it’s too late.

“We also want to take a holistic, city-wide approach to parking, and not simply move a problem from one area and create a new one elsewhere.”

Details of the proposals including the designs, maps and FAQs, will be available via the council’s online consultation hub from Friday and include a questionnaire to aid responses at: westsussex.gov.uk/ chiparkingplan THere will also be four dropin exhibitions taking place with council officers on hand to answer questions.

THe deadline for responses is Sunday, March 31. Feedback will then be analysed and a report made to the South Chichester County Local Committee in June.

Views on housing sought by council

THe council’s housing team delivers affordable housing, helps prevent homelessness, and makes sure homes are safe to live in.

THey would like to hear residents’ views on current priorities, and what should be included in the new strategy in order to shape their work for the future.

THe short survey covers key areas including: • Affordability • THe council’s housing register • Homelessness • THe private sector • Community-led housing.

Questions include how people should be prioritised for the housing register, how many affordable homes should be provided, and what would have the biggest impact on reducing homelessness in the district.

THere is also a list of frequently asked questions to help put the survey into context and explain some of the terms used.

THe deadline for responding is midnight on Friday, March 15.

Campaigners ask city residents for views on the Brexit debate THE EUROPEAN Movement Portsmouth and Chichester branch campaigned in Chichester on Saturday for a ‘People’s Vote’, asking members of the public how they felt about the main options now facing the Government.

Over 20 members and supporters turned out to help and many members of the public were keen to discuss the issues and have a chance to express their views in advance of the next phase of the crucial votes in the House of Commons on February 27.

People were encouraged to write to their MP to let them know how they felt about the current situation regarding Brexit, and they were invited to put stickers on a ‘Brexitometer’, which listed the four main options open to the Government: 1. Should the Government continue

to try to force its deal through Parliament?

2. Show Parliament let us crash out on March 29 with no deal?

3. Should there be a ‘People’s Vote’ referendum with an option to remain in the EU? 4. Should we simply revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU? THe most popular was option four, closely followed by option three.

City community projects in with chance of bags of help

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SUPERMARKET giant is marking its centenary by offering community projects in Chichester the chance to bag their share of a huge £100,000 funding pot.

As part of Tesco's anniversary celebrations, community organisations from across Chichester are being invited to share in the funding during two special Bags of Help voting rounds.

Bags of Help, run in partnership with Groundwork, sees funding awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. So far in Chichester, Bags of Help has awarded £113,255 to 32 local projects.

THroughout July and August the first of two special funding rounds will concentrate on groups delivering health and wellbeing benefits, with a particular focus on groups tackling cancer, heart disease and diabetes, in line with Tesco’s National Health Partnership.

Applications are open to all community projects bringing benefits across a region, with Tesco colleagues involved in shortlisting three applications in each area.

Customers are then invited to vote for which group they’d like to receive grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000, casting their votes using blue tokens handed out

at checkout points.

Alec Brown, Tesco’s head of community, said: "In 2019 we are celebrating a century of delivering great value for our customers. And what better way to celebrate this occasion than by using our flagship community grant scheme Bags of Help to support even more groups and organisations who are helping to make a difference across Britain."

Another voting round will launch in November, with even more projects sharing in the cash over the course of the year.

THe funding will reach over 30 regions during each round, with an incredible £3,300,000 up for grabs.

THe scheme will run in partnership with community charity Groundwork.

Groundwork’s national chief executive, Graham Duxbury, said: "THis is an exciting time for Bags of Help, with many more communities given the opportunity to apply for larger amounts of funding that can make a positive, long-lasting legacy where they live. We look forward to seeing a wide range of innovative projects that boost the health and wellbeing of our communities spring to life across Britain."

In Vesta Mews, Westhampnett, on Tuesday, February 12, a shed was broken into and mountain bike and bike tools were stolen. Serial 1031 12/2.

On Tuesday, February 12, in Cedar Drive, Chichester, a residential burglary took place. Entry was via the patio door and an untidy search was made but nothing was stolen.

In Parklands Road, Chichester, on Tuesday, February 12, a residential burglary took place between 6pm and 10pm. Entry was via a back door. Jewellery was stolen from the property. Serial 1389 12/2.

On Wednesday, February 13, in High Street, Oving, police received a report of two garages being broken into. Serial 0515 13/2.

In Beech Avenue, Chichester, on Wednesday, February 13, police received a report of a residential burglary between February 11 and February 13. Jewellery was stolen.

In Parklands Road, Chichester, on Wednesday, February 13, police received a report of a residential burglary. Doors at the rear of the property were damaged but nothing was stolen. Serial 0650 13.

In Cedar Drive, Chichester, on Friday, February 15, police received a report of a residential burglary between February 12 and February 15. A patio door was smashed to gain access but nothing was stolen.

South Coast commercial property agents Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) have successfully negotiated the sale of two warehouses totalling 86,305 sq ft and 44,819 sq ft.

Together with an adjoining 0.67-acre plot of development land, Aberdeen Standard purchased it after LSH and joint agents Flude Commercial facilitated the sale on behalf of the landowner.

THe site is home to successful global brands Carte Blanche and Philips Respironics, while the adjacent plot has the potential for the development of a 10,000 sq ft unit.

Questions raised over the four hour ambulance wait A DISTRICT councillor has written to the ambulance service to request an explanation as to why one of his residents had to wait almost four hours to see an ambulance.

In the letter, Cllr Adrian Moss wrote to Daren Mochrie, chief executive of South East Coast on Tuesday, February 12 to get clarification over the situation.

Mr Moss said how on Sunday, February 10, a resident in her late 70s fell on an uneven pavement near to her house on the A259 in Fishbourne. THe resident, who does not wish to be named, was returning from a shopping trip when the incident occurred. Fortunately, two local residents saw and rushed out to help her.

THe woman is said to have fallen on her face and passed out. THe ambulance was called, with exact location details provided. THe individual reporting the incident was warned that the ambulance may take two hours.

It is reported that the ambulance arrived four hours later.

In his letter, Cllr Moss says: “Clearly this is unacceptable delay in responding to a call that the ambulance service considers an emergency and it is quite extraordinary that the ambulance drove past in the first instance.

“THe ambulance crew assessed the injuries and provided the required care without the woman requiring a visit to hospital. THe woman was, of course, very grateful to the ambulance staff and for the care eventually given.

“We are all very grateful for the service provided by the ambulance service,

which is carried out by dedicated staff.

However, if the service is unable to cope then something needs to be done.”

Cllr Moss listed questions for Mr Mochrie including asking for standard response times.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We always take any concerns raised seriously and have recently received a letter from Cllr Moss. We will respond to him directly regarding his specific questions.

“We are sorry when it takes us longer than we would expect to respond to a call. All our calls are categorised into one of four categories based on information provided by the caller.

“THese categories range from category 1, which we would aim to respond to in an average of seven minutes and category 4 which we would aim to respond to in less than three hours 90 per cent of the time.

“THis incident was assigned a category 3 priority, which we aim to respond to within two hours 90 per cent of the time.

“We have been and remain extremely busy and have a duty to prioritise our most seriously ill and injured patients.

When we are facing high demand there are times when we can take longer than normal to reach patients who are not in a serious or life-threatening condition.

“We appreciate that this means some patients are waiting longer than both we and they would like. We are working hard to improve our response to less seriously ill and injured patients including introducing vehicles specifically aimed at responding to this type of call.”

A CYCLING event which was cancelled last year due to the weather has been postponed for another year.

Vélo South, the 100 mile cycle ride starting and ending in Goodwood, was cancelled in September due to heavy rain and wind forecasts.

Last year, a Vélo South spokesperson said: “Based on the advice of our thirdparty health and safety company and our medical team, we concluded it would be unsafe to attempt to deliver an event of this scale in the forecasted conditions.

“We are determined to re-schedule the event for 2019 and we will work with our local authority and partners to try to identify an alternative date as quickly as we can.”

On their website, Vélo South state: "THe good old British weather may have stopped Vélo South from taking place last September, but we’re working hard to bring the Vélo Series back to the south of England next year.

"Join the Vélo South mailing list and be the first to hear updates about 2020."

Many people have commented that it states the south of England and not West Sussex.

West Sussex County Council has confirmed that no event has been agreed

for 2020 and they welcomed applications from any potential organisers which are interested in holding an event next year, including CSM Active.

A council spokesperson said: “We supported Velo South 2018 and it was regrettable that the event had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

“Of course, we will, in the future, consider events of this scale in West Sussex because of the boost they can bring to tourism and the local economy in the county. We know that large-scale sporting events can also inspire people to become active, and deliver associated health and wellbeing benefits.

“However, we also recognise that some residents had concerns about the event so rather than having an event this year, the county council intends to take the time to better understand those concerns and plan ahead for a possible event in 2020.

“It’s important to emphasise that we are open-minded to events of this scale in West Sussex. We are ambitious for our residents and our local economy and that in the future when planning successful major events we will do this together with our communities.”

Horsham Bishop visits the city's new hospice THE new hospice site was visited last week by the Bishop of Horsham.

On Tuesday last week, the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby visited the building site of St Wilfrid’s Hospice’s new state-of-the-art building in Bosham.

THe Bishop was welcomed by the charity’s chief executive, Alison Moorey, and Canon Martin Lane, who showed the Bishop around as exciting fixtures like the flint stone fireplace, patient room lighting and block paving for the central courtyard were being installed.

Mr Sowerby said: "THe new hospice facilities in Bosham are the remarkable outworking of an imaginative vision.

"It was a privilege to see everything being pulled together to create a home for the clinical staff, fundraisers, and palliative care teams who serve the needs of patients with terminal illnesses

as well as their families."

THe informal visit lasted an hour with the Rt Revd Andrew Watson shown all areas of the new hospice including the café, to be open to general public), and the Living Well Centre, where day patients can access physiotherapy, counselling and complementary therapies.

"I’m thrilled that the Bishop could come along today and see the work taking place to create our fantastic new hospice," said Alison Moorey.

"He was really interested to learn about how much more support we’ll be able to offer and I think he was surprised to discover we need to raise more than £7.5 million each year to provide our vital services free of charge to the local community."

Canon Martin Lane commented: "I

think that the new hospice will be a great blessing to the Bosham community and not only to those in the wider community who are most in need of its services.

"THese new facilities are simply fantastic and will ensure that the hospice continues to provide wonderful care for future generations to come.”

St Wilfrid’s Hospice opens its new stateof-the-art 14 bedroom hospice, with en-suite bathrooms and family rooms, in late spring. Every year they care for nearly 1,000 patients and their families both on their wards and in patients own homes, where over two thirds of their care is also delivered.

Last month, NASA discovered a huge cavern has opened up under Antarctica, and earlier this year a polar vortex sent freezing weather that should have been over the Artic over the American mid-west while January was the warmest ever month in Australia Increasing climate disasters are now inevitable. THis motion recognised the need to recognise the seriousness of this as a climate emergency.

Cllr Sarah Sharp, from Chichester City Council, said: "Dealing with climate change must mean we must accept that our lifestyles and economy must end their dependence on fossil fuels.

"THe IPCC special report on global warming published in October last year stated that we have just 12 years to act on climate change if global temperature rises are to be kept within the recommended 1.5 degrees celsius.

"It's not much time and it means that action has to happen now as we have only a small window of opportunity if we're to avoid climate catastrophe.

"THe authors of the report are a 30-year-old intergovernmental body of the United Nations dedicated to giving the world an objective, scientific view of climate change, and its natural, political and economic impacts and risks and possible response options.

"Failure to act is a failure of responsibility and an incredible arrogance in the face of the science.

"If you had a disease, would you listen to the advice of 30 qualified medical professionals, or would you take the advice of unqualified laymen?

"Many of us have children so it is far wiser to err on the side of caution and take action for their sake and future, rather than do nothing and risk letting them down terribly when the opportunity was there to take a stand and make a difference. What's the worst that can happen? We end up with a cleaner environment in the county in which to live. THat doesn't sound too bad to me."

Climate change call

Residents, councillors and campaigners all joined in a march from the Cross in the city centre down to County Hall in West Street.

THe protesters supported Cllr Michael Jones’s call for West Sussex County Council to declare a climate emergency.

Cllr Jones summed up his climate emergency motion by saying: "We simply must protect our future and I believe that the county council is extremely well placed to help deliver this in a practical way, particularly if the UK Government provides funding to help achieve these goals.

"We need a commitment to these environmental issues in our own interests and it is my hope that by discussing this at full council we will also encourage a wider public debate that will focus on what opportunities there are for us locally."

University students help raise money for city's drop-in centre HUNDREDS of pounds have been raised by the University of Chichester for a youth drop-in centre which supports vulnerable children.

Nearly £550 was donated to the Bell Tower, in West Street, Chichester, which offers pupils a safe space to learn and play games after school.

All money raised by the university was collected from donations at its annual Christmas carol concert in Chichester Cathedral.

Bell Tower manager Sam Harding has overseen the project for more than four years.

He said: “THere is no other daily after-school centre like us in the city that provides a safe place, completely free.

"As the Bell Tower doesn’t charge its members, we are reliant on donations so the money raised by the university will help to keep our doors open allyear-round. We are open to everyone but tend to attract children from less privileged families."

THe popularity of the Bell Tower has

grown steadily in the five years it has operated – as many as 40 pupils now attend sessions every weekday.

THe drop-in centre, which is specifically for secondary school children, also promotes new skills through its leadership programme, where members are encouraged to become a positive influence in the community.

On handing over the cheque, university vice-chancellor Professor Jane Longmore said: "THe Bell Tower drop-in makes such a difference to the lives of potentially vulnerable young people in Chichester.

"THe university is grateful to all those who supported this wonderful charity by contributing to the retiring collection."

THe Bell Tower is reliant on donations and its small team of volunteers, who host gaming activities and homework sessions on the centre’s computers, donated by the university.

STAFF at Chichester care home are helping to tackle loneliness in the community.

Marriott House and Lodge Care Home is inviting older people who would usually dine alone to join its residents at its lunch club every Wednesday, and then join in an activity taster sessions.

It is hoped the offer of a free meal with good company at the Tollhouse Close care home will help reduce the feeling of isolation that some older people in Chichester are facing on a regular basis.

Diners will be treated to a nutritious and delicious lunch prepared by the talented chef and served in the home’s dining room between 12.30pm and 2pm and will have the chance to chat to the home’s staff and residents while enjoying their food.

THey are then welcome to join them for one of their afternoon activity sessions such as quizzes, bingo and musical entertainment, until 4pm.

THe home’s head chef is highly trained

in cooking dishes for individuals with a range of dietary needs and preferences so, if people are unable to eat what is on the menu or simply don’t like it, the kitchen staff are on hand to provide tasty alternatives.

THe don’t dine alone initiative was launched by care provider Barchester Healthcare as a way to reach out to isolated or vulnerable members of their local communities.

Irene Pudduck, the care home's deputy manager, said: "THis year, my team decided that they wanted to do more to help those who feel lonely or cut off from the rest of the community, especially older people who we know from experience find themselves feeling this way all too often.

"We really hope that by inviting people to join us for lunch on Wednesdays, we can help people to meet new friends and enjoy good conversation in a warm, homely environment."

Supporting young students with an inspiring programme

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN inspirational programme to help local young people fulfil their potential and improve their employment opportunities was launched last week.

More than 80 school students from all six Chichester district schools attended the event on Tuesday last week at the Weald and Downland Living Museum.

THe Be the Change programme has been developed by LoveLocalJobs.com and Graham Moore of Metamoorephosis to help 13 and 14-year-olds navigate the gap between education and employment.

THe 2019 Chichester programme was launched as Chichester District Council wanted to develop a programme to support disengaged young people.

Volunteer business guides from some of the leading local employers, including the council, Chichester College, Petworth Vision and Vitacress, were touched by the honest and emotional stories of students, who shared their experiences and day-to-day challenges at the Chichester Be the Change event.

Students and business volunteers took part in activities that focused on happiness, confidence, hope, relationships and employability.

THe activities were created and led by Graham Moore, a former teacher who understands the challenges facing young people today.

Graham said: "Our vision is for every young person to have raised hope and confidence, to have the chance to develop life skills and create positive cycles that will prepare them for life.

"Be the Change is a perfect vehicle to help young people develop the qualities and qualifications they need for a better future.

"THe volunteers and the invaluable support and belief of local businesses adds a further dimension and depth to the engagement and journey the young people will experience."

"I was very pleased to attend the launch and see the project in action.

Leda reaches new heights with a mammoth climb to help animals f Leda has a cuddle with a puppy

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN ANIMAL lover from Chichester is climbing to new heights to help raise money for a charity close to her heart.

Leda Gahan, 33, is taking on the Welsh 3000s challenge in June.

THis tough challenge involves Leda climbing all 15 of Snowdonia's peaks in a continuous journey with a total elevation gain of nearly 4,000 metres.

If that wasn't enough, she plans to complete the entire task in just 24 hours.

THis will include two Grade 1 scrambles over the knife-edged ridge of Crib Goch and Tryfan.

Leda is planning to raised around ÂŁ500 to support the charity, Jacobs Ridge, in Spain. She said: "I am doing this to raise money for an animal sanctuary that I volunteered at last May, in Spain.

"THe sanctuary is currently home to over 130 animals including pigs, cats, dogs, horses, goats and donkeys, who have been rescued from abuse, neglect and slaughter.

"It is a non-profit organisation and they rely solely on volunteers and donations made through the Animal Sanctuary Lottery, to be able to provide the food, shelter, care and vets bills, for all the animals.

"THe charity is run by two people, Julian and Rachael, and two more caring, passionate and inspiring people you will not

meet. THey dedicate their lives 365 days a year to keeping the sanctuary going and they provide those gorgeous animals with a safe haven for them to live out their days and be loved.

"I really believe that the importance of places like this cannot be underestimated. THese guys work so hard day in, day out and they all need all the support they can get. THey are quite simply amazing."

Jacobs Ridge, in Murcia, in Spain, started in 2011 when the owners were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to foster a beautiful young horse named Jacob.

As part of their mission statement, the charity says: "It is our mission to create a safe environment to last as a forever home to animals who need it, one where they don’t have to work or provide for us.

"It is important to us that Jacobs Ridge is not just a sanctuary for animals, but also for humans.

"We wish to further improve the lives of our rescue animals and offer a permanent home to more in need by securing and expanding the site of Jacobs Ridge. At the same time, we will educate those who need it on the exploitation of animals so that more animals can live life

without fear."

Leda has already challenged herself when she previously completed two 100km walks, one from London to Brighton, to raise money for Mind, in memory of two of her friends, and another walk from Eastbourne to Arundel to raise money for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provided care for her nephew throughout his cancer treatment.

"THe Welsh 3000s is going to be considerably tougher than my previous challenges, both physically and mentally and to say I am nervous would be a huge understatement," said Leda.

"But I believe we should be constantly pushing ourselves and the motto at Jacobs Ridge is 'Life without fear' and so I feel taking this on is reflective of that."

Leda said she was getting in as much hill training as possible. However, she said that living in Sussex did not make that easy!

"I will therefore also be going to Wales to get a few training weekends in the mountains. Aside from building my leg strength and doing stamina training, I am hoping to get a chance to take a oneday course in scrambling as this is not something I have done before!" she said.

` Space explorers VISITORS went to infinity and beyond when they entered the Novium Museum on Wednesday morning.

As part of the South Downs National Park Dark Sky Festival, guests found out more about what life is like on the International Space Station by going along to a Space Explorers day at the Novium Museum.

Families had the chance to learn about working in zero gravity, discover where astronauts get their water from and learn about some of the dangers that can be found in space.

Amanda Rogan, learning and community engagement officer at the musuem, said: "Our Space Explorers event saw about 500 people visit the museum to learn all about life on board the International Space Station.

"Visitors could watch demonstrations about aspects of space such as working in microgravity, the dangers that astronauts face and how astronauts recycle their urine to make drinking water.

"THere were also activities such as dressing up and object handling as well as the opportunity to ask museum staff questions about space."

Hands-on fun at museum

Visitors to the museum were able to find out what the Romans did for people, from pottery-making, creating mosaics to spinning and weaving.

Lisa Court, from Chichester, took her children, SarahLouise, aged eight, and ten-year-old Jamie.

She said: "It's so good to come here because the children learn so much without feeling like they actually are!

"THey can look around at the mosaics and bits and get stuck into the activities too, it's great value for money."

THe museum is well-known for its

family fun days and large amounts of activities teaching children about the past era while also having fun.

Betina Blake, marketing and admin coordinator at the museum, said: "Fishbourne Roman Palace welcomed families this half-term to five days of fun.

"THe site came to life as visitors got the chance to discover many of the daily activities the Romans encountered.

"Children were able to attend a lesson at Roman school, learning some Latin words and maths challenges, as well as dressing up in costumes of the time and making Roman bread.

"THere were also opportunities to make clay pots and lamps and taste some delicacies of the time, such as cheesecake made with honey and poppy seeds, sweet wine cakes and pickled cheese."

City MP visits the students at high school

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE CITY'S MP visited students at a high school in the city centre last week.

On Friday, Gillian Keegan visited Chichester High School where she met the new headteacher, Jo McKeown.

She was then given a tour of the school by pupils and viewed classrooms and the fitness suite.

Mrs Keegan spoke to some pupils in the meeting room about the books they were currently reading, hobbies and future careers.

THe Chichester MP was then led to an MP Question Time, where sixth form students had the opportunity to ask questions ranging from local to national policy issues.

THe students' enthusiasm was clear to see but unfortunately there wasn’t time to get through everyone's questions.

Mrs Keegan offered to answer them all if they wrote to her and since then nearly 40 further questions have arrived at her Westminster office.

THe MP was then taken to watch some of the Combined Cadet Force exercises at the school where the students demonstrated some of their

marching drills.

After her visit, Mrs Keegan said: "It was so lovely to return to Chichester High School.

"THe students there are clearly engaged with current affairs and I was impressed that their focus was on local issues as well as the headline-catching ones on our news screens every night.

"It seems I have some homework to do to respond to all of the questions I didn’t get time to answer! It was also great to see the cadets on parade, a first for me on a school visit."

A CHICHESTER cancer charity is organising events to help raise money.

CancerWise provides valuable support for cancer patients, their families and their supporters.

THe CancerWise drop-in centre in Chichester, is open five days a week and offers support in many ways, including counselling, emotional support and complimentary therapies.

On Saturday, March 2, local cancer support charity CancerWise is holding a Saywell International Supercar Track Day at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Entry to the event is free for everyone to come along with family and friends to see some amazing supercars at this historic venue.

Parking is also free.

THere will be CancerWise collection buckets, a tombola, live singer Emma Cranham and children's glitter tattoos and hair braiding.

THe track day starts at 9am and will run until 5pm with a parade lap and chance to get closer to the Supercars at lunchtime.

Fundraising manager Emma Neno said: "We are absolutely over the moon to be supported by Saywell International. THe track day is going to fantastic for all the family come rain or shine!"

Slipper swap PEOPLE in the Post area can get involved in a Slipper Swap during March.

As part of the county council’s investment in falls prevention this winter, elderly residents across the county are being invited to trade in their old slippers for a brand new pair, free of charge.

THe new initiative comes amid new figures released that show there were 4,772 emergency hospital admissions due to falls in people aged 65 and over in West Sussex during 2017/18.

Ill-fitting slippers, or those which are beyond their best, pose a real risk of causing a fall.

Treating hip fractures as a result of a fall is estimated to cost the NHS in West Sussex more than £20 million a year.

THe county council has already invested more than £750,000 in a new programme of work being delivered by Sussex Community Foundation Trust to deploy specialist falls champions across the county to help those most at risk of a fall.

THis funding came as part of a £3.3 million government grant, ring-fenced to help ease winter pressures on adult social care and health services.

County council cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, said: “Having a fall can have devastating consequences, not only a loss of independence but it can impact on confidence leading to social isolation.

“THere are a number of really simple things that residents can do to reduce their risk of suffering a fall, but those old tatty slippers you keep tripping over are a good place to start.

"We are very excited to announce the launch of our first Slipper Swap next month, and I would urge anyone who feels they may be at risk of falling to pop along, with your old slippers, to the event where they will be able to find out more information on how to keep themselves safe.”

Jools Holland supports free music lessons in Post area A FREE national event to encourage everyone in the UK to start making music is coming to Chichester and Bognor Regis next month.

Supported by Jools Holland, and run by charity Music for All, the 2019 Learn to Play Day will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, and will see music shops, teachers, venues and schools throughout the county partner with leading musical instrument brands to offer thousands of free music lessons.

Post readers can enjoy the free sessions at: Mikes Music Workshop in Bognor Regis and St George's Church (run by the Royal School of Church Music) in Chichester.

Since being launched eight years ago, the Learn to Play Day initiative has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument.

Many had never played before, while others played as a child but gave up.

Held in partnership with the Musicians’ Union, the ‘Take It Away’ scheme and Making Music, the Learn

to Play Day initiative has been growing in popularity with a record 10,000 free lessons held during last year’s event.

WEST SUSSEX County Council says it has approved a 'balanced budget' for 2019/20.

Councillors have approved net expenditure of £575.5 million to deliver key services.

THe council also agreed significant investments to support five key priority areas.

THese include: • £6.1 million - additional new investment in children and young people’s services • £7.3 million - investment in adults and health.

• Additional investment - special support centres to help keep students with special educational needs and disabilities in mainstream schools with their peers and in their local area.

• £3 million - additional investment in extra care schemes to help keep older people living independently for longer.

• £44.5 million - investment in a sustainable energy programme which includes the installation of solar farms and battery storage on unused council land.

• £5 million - programme to create community hubs and protect key services by bringing them together under one roof.

• £13.8 million - investment in corporate and fire fleet vehicles and £1.8 million in specialist fire equipment to support the fire and rescue service.

• £22.5 million - investment in digital infrastructure supporting businesses and rural communities.

Since 2010, the council has saved more than £200m and in the same period,

government funding has been cut by £145m.

THe county council faced a challenging financial gap of £45.4m for 2019/20 alone, due to increasing demand on social care services and a continued reduction in central government funding.

As a result, it identified £23.4millionworth of savings across a number of services.

THe remaining amount has been found through a council tax increase of 4.99 per cent, which includes a dedicated 2 per cent to fund adult social care.

THis increase means an additional £1.27 per week for the average Band D household.

Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: "Despite the difficult financial challenges we face as a county council, this budget includes significant investment in a number of priority areas for the communities we are here to serve.

"We're making a clear commitment to continue exploring new and innovative ways to generate income and do more with the money we have.”

Jeremy Hunt, cabinet member for finance and resources, said: "THis budget is balanced, robust and sustainable which supports the five key priorities in our West Sussex Plan.

"It is a budget that supports our residents and ensures that we continue to provide our many excellent services."

Members of the county council formally agreed the final budget and the level of council tax at heir meeting on Friday.

Following the success of last year’s campaign, ‘You Can Care’, Home Instead Senior Care is looking to recruit 60 caregivers to join its team. Since launching the campaign in 2018, the company has grown by 30 per cent over the past 12 months.

Skills for Care, an independent charity

with more than 18 years’ experience in workforce development, estimates that eight per cent of roles in adult social care are vacant, which gives an average of approximately 110,000 vacancies at any one time.

THese statistics suggest the sector is struggling to keep up with demand as the population ages.

Speaking of the campaign, Simon McGee, owner of Home Instead Chichester, says: "When we launched the 'You Can Care' campaign last year, we saw an upsurge in interest from people looking to join the care sector.

"As our population continues to age, we are continuing to build our team with

kind and compassionate people who want to make a difference to the elderly in the local community.

Students get Lush lesson from soap STUDENTS at Chichester College were treated to a special sensory lesson with a difference when staff from Lush visited their class recently.

Representatives from the Chichester store of the cosmetics company provided two interactive sessions with learners from the college’s foundation learning groups.

THe sessions were part of their Independent living and environmental awareness education.

THe students discovered how Lush was working to reduce plastic packaging and use ethically sourced materials in its products.

THey were also introduced to various products which invoke different senses, including ‘popping candy’ bath bombs, which released a golden lustre effect into the water, and jelly bombs, which gave the water a ‘jelly-

like’ consistency.

THere was also an opportunity to get creative with some pliable soap which can be used to make models and shapes.

David Turner, deputy head of learning for foundation programmes at Chichester College, said: "Our learners enjoyed two brilliant sessions with Ash and Laura, from Lush in Chichester.

"THey really enjoyed getting involved with the hands-on learning, as they were exposed to different materials and sensory experiences which really sparked their imagination.

"Experiences like these are invaluable. THey help students to build confidence and awareness as they meet with different people and learn new things through interactive and fun sessions."

TWO MEN from Chichester formed part of a team who have recently completed what has been described as the ‘toughest row in the world’.

THe ‘Row, Row, Row Our Boat’ team’ - consisting of Andy Williams (Westbourne), Nick Wright (THorney Island), Andrew Burns (Chichester) and Jonny Bayley (Brighton) - rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic for 42 days, 12 hours and 53 minutes, from La Gomera to Antigua.

THe team finished ninth out of 29 teams from around the world in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge to

raise money for a children’s charity and hospital charity.

More people have been in space than have completed the challenge, with the team enduring blisters, seasickness, sunburn, sleep deprivation, open sores and severe exhaustion.

THe team rowed constantly, two at a time, two hours on and two hours off, all day for 42 days and have so far raised over £7,000 for their chosen charities, Over THe Wall, which provides free residential camps for children with serious health challenges and the Royal Surrey County Hospital Charitable Trust.

THe team have been away from their families since December 12 and missed Christmas and New Year while staying on the 8.5m boat, surviving largely

on freeze-dried food, but were kept company by pods of whales, dolphins, flying fish and even the occasional shark.

Former Royal Marine and captain of the team, Andy Williams, said: "THis challenge has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to achieve something that so very few people have achieved. We feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to participate in the challenge while helping two very important charities. Our journey required us to think positively and reach beyond our potential which is exactly what Over THe Wall encourages campers to do at its camps."

ChoirFest returns ONE OF the biggest choir festivals in Sussex makes a return to the Regis Centre in Bognor next month.

Choirfest, now in its third year, is back bigger and better with ten choirs now confirmed to perform over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

THe festival, a joint collaboration between West Sussex-based Arun Arts and Bersted Arts, is a noncompetitive event that welcomes a diverse range of community choirs from Hampshire across to East Sussex. THe aim is to bring together some of the region’s talented but otherwise unknown community choirs and showcase their talents to the community without the pressure of competing against each other.

One of the event organisers, Will Hackett, said: “THe fact that it is non-competitive is one of the main attractions of this festival, and what makes it different from many other similar events.

“Over the last few years we’ve discovered and showcased so many talented choirs from across the south that wouldn’t otherwise have been given a platform or an opportunity to perform in an event and at a venue such as this.”

After an afternoon of rehearsing and networking, each of the choirs takes to the stage to perform in front of a packed audience in the Alexandra THeatre before all coming together on stage in a showstopping finale.

New for this year is the ChoirFest Scratch Choir, perfect for anyone who doesn’t belong to a choir but would like to try it out.

Taking place on the Saturday of the festival, members of the public are invited to form their very own choir, from scratch. Under the expert direction of a professional musical director, a group of newbies will come together to learn and rehearse a number of songs during the day before taking to the stage with the other community choirs to perform in front of an audience.

Will said: “THis will be a challenging but really fun experience for anyone who has always wanted to sing in a choir but perhaps hasn’t found the confidence or the time needed to commit to regular practice.

“THey’ll receive coaching from a professional West End musical director and all the encouragement they need so they are fully prepared for their debut performance in the evening.”

THe Sixteen is celebrating its 40th anniversary since being founded by Harry Christophers, who still conducts the ensemble, and if it can continue to transport audiences across the centuries with such consummate skill, power and beauty, future generations will be fortunate.

Although in such an ensemble piece it is invidious to pick out the soloists, tenors Mark Dobell and Jeremy Budd gave spine-tingling renditions of clarity and passion, especially in the responses. With these, it was refreshing to have other parts of the cathedral used as platforms rather than leaving the audience at the back of the nave feeling cut off from much of the atmosphere.

Sopranos Katy Hill and Charlotte Mobbs performed with emotional sensitivity in their solos and duets while special mention should also go to

The Jigantics DESCRIBING themselves as a musical roots stew, combining the world's finest ingredients, one of the UK and 'Nu Folk' music's most arresting bands, THe Jigantics, will be returning to Selsey next month.

Selsey Folk and Music Club will be hosting the band, who are part of a growing group of contemporary artists appealing to a wide range of music followers increasingly looking beyond conventional musical stereotypes, and just enjoying a fusion of great songs, stunning harmonies and fine musicianship.

In this case, it's a genre-defying mix of roots, blues, trad, country and then some. It would seem to be an ongoing journey, as the band continue to explore all the options open to their multi-

instrumental, multi-talented personnel.

Every member, including drummer/percussionist Martin Fitzgibbon, contributes harmonies and occasionally lead vocals to the mix. THe instruments get passed around with Mark Cole swopping squeeze boxes for mandolin, Keith THompson changing from vocals, acoustic guitars and blues harp and Sarah Kelly on vocals and ukulele.

SECRETS of the royal family, from Queen Victoria to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, could well be revealed when expert Hugo Vickers gives a public lecture.

Among many books written by Hugo, who is known as a biographer, royal historian and commentator, include lives of the Queen Mother, Princess Andrew of Greece and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

He is frequently in demand for commentaries on major royal occasions including the weddings of Prince Charles and Diana, the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex, and the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Queen Mother.

He has acted as historical adviser on films including THe King’s Speech and Victoria & Abdul -in which he was also an extra - while also enjoying attacking the many inaccuracies in television hit THe Crown.

In the talk at Havant, Hugo will discuss the business of writing royal biographies.

Set sail for Mary Rose CHART a course and set sail for the Mary Rose this half-term to see Henry VIII’s favourite warship reunited with key parts for the first time in almost 500 years!

THe ship’s stem – a crucial structural piece of timber that curves upwards from the keel to define its bow - eluded underwater archaeologists until 2003.

Having undergone excavation and conservation since then, the rediscovered stem can now finally be seen in the Weston Ship Hall, at the heart of the Mary Rose experience.

THis exciting addition to the awardwinning museum finally allows you to see the length and curve of the ship’s bow, adding a crucial piece of the Mary Rose jigsaw. Also unveiled are the never-beforeseen ship’s pump and another of her huge anchors, astonishing additions to one of the largest collections of Tudor objects in the world.

THe display of these essential artefacts coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Mary Rose Trust. Formed in 1979, with THe Prince of Wales as its president, the Mary

Rose Trust works tirelessly to conserve and display the remains of the Mary Rose and her objects. THe Mary Rose had been the pride of Henry VIII before she sank fighting a French invasion fleet during the Battle of the Solent in 1545.

Dr Alexzandra Hildred, head of research and curator of ordnance and human remains, joined the project in 1979 and has been part of the Mary Rose story ever since. Alexzandra comments: “It is difficult to perceive that 40 years has passed since the formation of the trust, it has gone in the blink of an eye.” Alexzandra said reuniting the newly conserved stem with the Mary Rose was "an apt way to celebrate this important anniversary and demonstrates our continuing fulfilment of the objectives of the trust.”

Prize winning night for poet Open Mic Poetry Jubilee Hall, New Park Centre, New Park Road, Chichester PO19 7XY Wednesday, February 27, 7.30pm HEADING the bill at Open Mic Poetry is prize-winning Sussex poet Janet Sutherland, who will be treating audiences to poems from her latest collection, Home Farm, which has just been published by Shearsman books.

In her fourth collection, Janet explores the farm in Wiltshire where she grew up. It is a poetry of landscape and water, of birds, beasts and other creatures, of life lived cheek by jowl with death, of memory and forgetfulness - all of it rooted in place.

Janet has had a varied career and since 2001 she has lived in Lewes, East Sussex. As well as pursuing her writing, she works part-time for Relate in Brighton as an administrator.

THe trio comprises Helen Sills on violin, Michael Nebe on cello and Alan Brown on piano. THey will be playing Mozart's Piano Trio in B Flat, Op. 502 and Turina's Piano Trio No. 2 in B minor Op. 77.

Helen Sills read music at Nottingham University, followed by an MA in baroque music, and then gained a PhD from Birmingham University on the music of Igor Stravinsky. She studied the violin with Kenneth Piper at the Royal College of Music and later with Peter THomas.

Michael Nebe has toured the UK, Germany, Holland, USA, Canada and Australia, where he held guest professorships and recorded for radio and television.

From the first 35 musicians who turned up to an inaugural meeting at HMS Excellent on Whale Island in Portsmouth, the band progressed by leaps and bounds to their debut performance in September, 2007, at the Royal Marines Association's annual reunion. Today, the band has a programme of engagements across the country, fulfilling them all to the highest standards of musicianship.

At Worthing, they will give a programme of popular marches, big band sounds, musical theatre, music from film, radio and television shows as well as the classics.

THe concert will also feature a typical Royal Marines finale. THis concert is in aid of THe Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund with ticket prices starting at £13.50.

Heath Quartet Since his acclaimed Wigmore Hall debut, Alan Brown has appeared at many venues throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, the Channel Islands, Australia, South Korea and Japan. He has a repertoire of more than 45 concertos and has played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Virtuosi of England.

Entry to the lunchtime concerts, which last approximately 50 minutes, is free.

Hollywood Rome comes to Chichester The Novium Museum Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1QH www.thenovium.org Exhibition opens in April AN EXCITING new exhibition coming to THe Novium Museum this spring will bring Hollywood to Chichester, for an entirely new take on Ancient Rome.

Hollywood Rome: Reel Life in the Ancient World will feature stunning costumes, props and posters from some big name modern epics such as Gladiator, Centurion, King Arthur and Ben Hur. THis will be the first time the touring exhibition, curated by Pop-Up Exhibitions, has been shown.

THe exhibition will interpret the films in the context of the history and archaeology that have inspired filmmakers, presenting historical figures in a way that will connect with modern audiences and fans of historical cinema.

It will include interactive and handling elements, original cinema posters and banners and fabric hangings used in Gladiator. THere will also be a selection of memorabilia from classic 'sword and sandal' flicks of the 1950s and 1960s.

"THis will be a colourful exhibition with something for all the family," says Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester. "THe Romans are always a popular topic with children and adults alike, and we hope visitors will have fun as well as wanting to find out more about Roman history."

Stephanie THorndyke, manager of THe Novium Museum, said: "We are always looking at innovative ways to bring history to life. By tapping into people's love of cinema, and looking at some of the big stories and legends that have made their way onto the screen, we can link with our own rich Roman heritage."

Barry Chandler, director of Pop Up Exhibitions, added: "Pop Up Exhibitions are thrilled to be showing our collection of Roman-themed film and TV costumes at THe Novium Museum. A series of events organised by THe Novium Museum will accompany the exhibition, including two evening talks in May:

landscape designer, John Brookes MBE. Recounting the site’s history, which was part of an estate owned by Lord Denmans in the late-1800’s before being requisitioned by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chairman of the JohnBrookes Denmans Foundation, said that Joyce and her husband grew vegetables and cut-flowers at Denmans for the market in Covent Garden.

Joyce later converted it to a unique ornamental garden which John Brookes redesigned during his 35+ years at Denmans.

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

under way and other renovations are on the calendar. The past year’s pruning and replanting is evident everywhere.

Gwendolyn said that “visitors are consistently impressed which is encouraging.”

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

For those who want to take home a little of the Denmans magic, seeds and plants are sold among other wares at the gift shop, while it and the popular tea rooms are open without visiting

Summing up the charm of Denmans, Gwendolyn said: “It really is an incredibly special place with its own soul which people connect to.”

Awards are well deserved for Indian fine dining restaurant

AWARD-WINNING restaurants don't always live up to their reputation but one which does is Cardamom Bay. When my husband and I visited on a Wednesday evening, it was a good sign that a number of the tables were occupied by a range of customers other couples, a family party and friends having a get-together - in the smart, comfortable, dining area with starched white linen cloths and friendly, attentive staff.

Straight away, we were offered drinks - we chose Cobra beer and a lemonade - and poppadums while trying to choose from the extensive menu. THe light and crisp poppadums were not in the least oily and were accompanied with a mixed pickle, mango chutney, minted plain yoghurt and finely sliced onion.

Sharing a starter of lamb samosas, also available as a vegetarian option, we found these were well filled and meaty with just a slight kick to alert the taste buds ready for mains.

THe premises in Queensway, right in the heart of Bognor's town centre, were expanded two years ago and now offers dining both at lunchtimes and evenings.

Takeaway is also available and groups are welcome to make enquiries for parties.

Lal added: "We use only the freshest, local ingredients where possible and source all our meat from a sustainable supplier. We strive to make your dining experience a memorable event."

Helpfully for customers who are not too familiar with the ingredients of Indian cuisine, full descriptions are given on the menu, including indications of the spicy heat of dishes, but if you are a fan of sub-continent favourites are all here.

Although eight varieties of classics, such as Madras curry, are listed plus other curries, biryani and tandoori, the house specials looked the most interesting mains. My husband opted for the fish special grill while I went for the Jal Jal balti, which comprised succulent chicken breast cooked in a sauce with red peppers and tomatoes.

With salmon, sea bass and king prawns marinated in a yoghurt thick sauce, cooked in a Tandoori clay oven and served with salad, the fish grill was a generous and tasty plateful but we supplemented it with special fried rice and traditional sag aloo of potatoes and spinach.

Although we were far too full from the previous two courses, we couldn't resist iced desserts of a mango-flavour kulfi and a caramel ice cream.

It all added up to a satisfying, good value meal with flavours of the East in modern plush surroundings, justifying its reputation as one of the most popular Indian restaurants in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area.

Lal Hussain, who runs the restaurant with his brothers, says the basis for its continuing popularity is his passion for life through cooking.

"Over 30 years, I worked my way through the business from Bus Boy to chef. My view of the world as a chef led to me opening Cardamom Bay.

"Together, with my brothers, Kamal and Jahangir, we have created a menu and environment that has been voted the ‘Best Restaurant in Bognor Regis’ by Trip Advisor three times, due to our incredible food and atmosphere.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshly-made tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish dishes.

A tapas banquet for four people at £19.50 is popular for groups with a selection across the menu but my husband and I, with help from Beyhan, settled in comfortable chairs, made our own choices from the vegetarian, meat and chicken, and fish and seafood sections, washed down with a house white pinot grigio and a lemonade.

Key to the happy ambience of the converted wine cellar is the philosophy of owner Beyhan Cumali who treats everyone as guests rather than customers.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last

year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread about the revival of an old favourite of the Chichester eating-out scene.

15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

NEWS AT RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch (Mount Noddy) we have loads of activities you can get involved with.

Clare, our business and income generations manager, is encouraging supporters of the branch to take part in various activities that can help support the running of the self-funded animal centre at Eartham.

THe branch has four local boutique-style charity shops located at Bognor Regis (2 THe Arcade), Chichester (50 North Street), Worthing (135 Montague Street) and Horsham (35 East Street), and will be opening a fifth in Littlehampton (High Street) this spring.

Profits from shops support the running of the large dog and cat rehoming centre, and they rely on donations from the public that are carefully selected to sell. Did you know that if you have donations of clothing, books, bras, bags and shoes that you deem not good enough for us to sell, that we get paid up to 42p per kilo for recycling these items and can generate thousands of pounds more each year, just through this process? Perhaps your workplace has room in a corner for a donation station to collect shop donations for us? Our shops are always welcoming new volunteers for a few hours each week. Drop in seven days a week to your local shop to find out more about volunteering in our shops.

We are big into recycling at the branch, too, and you can help the environment as well as our animals in need, by dropping your empty inkjet cartridges (from small office and home printers) in our recycling boxes now at any of our four shops and Mount Noddy reception. Not only does this help reduce the volume into landfill, but also generates income for the centre.

We also take old batteries too in all five locations, look out for our 'Battery Bobs'.

If you are interested in a fundraising activity or one of our events, we are open to suggestions. How about signing up for a skydive, abseil, muddy run or 10k? Perhaps baking some cakes or a sponsored slim or dog walk is more your thing? Our events calendar is starting to fill up, so get your friends together for our pub quiz at THe Friary Arms, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis, on Sunday, March 10, 5pm-7pm. Bring your dogs along to help for only £2 per person to play, there's a raffle too! We are also excited to announce the launch of 'Noddy-fest' summer fete and fun dog show at Mount Noddy on Saturday, June 29, 10am5pm. Loads of activities and stall for the entire family. Just £1 entry for 12 and overs. If you have any unwanted Christmas presents, we can take them off your hands for raffle and tombola prizes (and we won't tell!)

REHEARSAL night was a different one for Spinnaker Chorus recently as they took a cappella, 4 part, Barbershop harmonies to Chichester University.

THe purpose of the visit was to provide a Barbershop workshop for students studying various music degree courses there. THis initiative was the brainchild of Spinnaker chairman, Jill Cook, who is a university governor and Susan Legg, head of music at Chichester.

THe music course students were invited along to see the magic of Barbershop in action as Spinnaker passionately sang numerous songs from a varied repertoire for their entertainment.

LEADING national law firm Irwin Mitchell’s Chichester office has made more of its solicitors Dementia Friends, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the local community.

THe Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

Dementia Friends are provided with specialist training on what living with dementia is like and the best way to support those with the illness. Irwin Mitchell has been involved in the initiative since 2017, and it has the support of chief executive Andrew Tucker.

THE British postal service can trace its origins to 1516 when Henry VIII established a ‘Master of Posts,’ a precursor to the office of the Postmaster General.

THe Postmaster General was a member of government who was responsible for maintaining the postal system and, after the Telegraph Act of 1868, electric telegraphs.

He was supported by local postmasters who were located in towns and cities throughout England and ran local postal services. In turn, they were then supported by subpostmasters and subpostmistresses, who would offer some post office services alongside other work such as running a shop or other businesses. Early post offices were usually set up in people’s houses or other commercial properties.

Chichester did not have a custom built post office until the late 19th century.

THe first Postmaster of Chichester, John Lucas, was appointed in 1769, with an annual salary of £42.

Between 1783 and 1800 the Postmaster of Chichester was William Carlton, who worked from his premises in East Street.

Upon his death, his wife, Elizabeth, was given permission take on the role after arguing that she had worked with her husband and was familiar with the tasks and routines of postal work. She resigned from the position in 1812 stating ‘overwork’ as her reason, although there had been some suspicion regarding fraudulent activities at the post office under her management .

In June, 1816, John Angell became Postmaster and worked from a premises in South Street. In 1824 John’s son, William, was convicted of stealing a letter from the post office which contained £100 and was sentenced to seven years' transportation. He was caught after spending some of the bank notes and later confessed to his father.

At the end of 18th and beginning of the

19th century, post was sent using Royal Mail coaches along the main postal routes. As Chichester was not directly served by Royal Mail coaches (which ran to Portsmouth and Brighton from London) post to towns and villages was instead delivered by private mail coaches or post boys.

Legend has it that between 1830 and 1850, mail was conveyed between Chichester and Arundel in a cart drawn by four large dogs; this was made illegal in 1856. THe transportation of mail at this time was hazardous and robberies were frequent. One attempted robbery of a dog-drawn mail cart took place in 1830.

Taking place in Arundel Woods, the letter carrier stopped to give an elderly woman a lift in the mail carriage, despite knowing this was against the rules. A little into the journey, the mail carrier saw a gun beneath the clothing of his passenger and realised that it was, in fact, a highwayman in disguise. Luckily, he was able to remove the would-be robber from the carriage and arrived at his destination without injury.

Due to crimes such as these, mail coaches often carried a guard. In Chichester, a man named Luke Kent served as the first guard of the Chichester mail coach. His job was to protect the post from attempts to steal it, record journey times and warn other roadusers when the coach was approaching. Mail guards were armed to deter robbery attempts from highwaymen. It was reported on his death in 1803 that he left a sum of money in his will to the mail coach on condition that on future journeys the horn would be sounded as they passed his grave in Havant.

Brave Bognor sitting second after sneaking past Sandown in thriller BOGNOR RFC will be looking to consolidate second spot after coming out on top of a titanic clash with rivals Sandown & Shanklin.

THe Hampshire Avenue side leapfrogged over their rivals in the Hampshire Premier standings after a pulsating 14-13 win in front of a home crowd at the weekend.

THose four points put Bognor three ahead of the Isle of Wight side, albeit with Sandown still having a game in hand.

With no match tomorrow and then five matches of the season still to play, the Purple and Greens will know they cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to seal the runners-up spot behind undefeated leaders Basingstoke.

THey will want to build on an excellent defensive display which saw them dominate Sandown early on and reap the rewards on the scoreboard.

George Castleton and James Barlow set the tone without the ball, ensuring the visitors gained next to no forward momentum.

THe returning Nathan Archer then turned the ball over excellently with a huge hit in the midfield, allowing fly half Dave Sweeney to capitalise.

He kicked the ball through and chased it

down to pile over the white line and give Bognor a 7-0 lead.

THe Purple and Greens then held firm for the rest of the half, Billy Toone using his experience to control the game after a solid foundation was set.

THe forwards were dominating the ruck area but not so much the scrum, Tom Orchard working hard with Adam Groome to secure quick ball for the playmakers to work with.

It was Sweeney who made the breakthrough, weaving through the line majestically, then feeding Archer who gave the ball back to man of the match Sweeney to cross the line. 14-0.

THe second half started with ill discipline from the home side, a few penalties here and there saw Sandown really take the game by the scruff of the neck and score a penalty in front of the posts. 14-3.

THe visitors then added seven as their back row somehow squeezed down the flank to score a try out of nothing. 10-14.

Bognor continued to defend stoutly and an offside infringement reduced the lead to one point. But the home side saw the game out with some terrific last ditch tackles and great game management in the forwards.

CHICHESTER RFC's bid for four wins on the bounce was foiled by THurrock as the Essex raiders produced a smash and grab performance at Oaklands Park.

THe 20-28 defeat last weekend was disappointing for the spirited Blues who have played some of their best rugby of the season in recent weeks.

But Scott Ashley's side never really recovered from a poor first half which saw them go in at the break 18-6 down.

Chi rallied in the second 40 but could not do enough even to claim a losing bonus point, meaning they slip to 10th, seven points above the bottom three.

With a bye this week, Chi now must regroup ahead of the final six matches of the season, kicking off with a trip to south west London to play London Cornish on March 2 (2.30pm).

Chi, who made six changes to the side that beat leaders Brighton a fortnight ago, kicked off down the hill against THurrock.

But the visitors took an early 3-0 lead before

sloppy play saw both sides make a number of errors. Eventually, it was the Essex side that scored the first try, making the best of a five metre scrum.

Both sides then swapped penalties before THurrock added a second five pointer with Chi only managing a Gareth Anscombe penalty in reply before the half time break.

Into the second period and four yellow cards reduced both sides to 13.

Blues got on the front foot and despite resolute defending Sam Drayson found a gap to ground the ball in Vultures Corner, much to the delight of the Chi faithful on the balcony.

THurrock responded immediately though to restore the 12 point lead. 13-25.

Chi replied and surged forward. A yellow card for the visitors was shown as they illegally halted a Blues charge. From the next play Ben Polhill reduced the deficit. 20-25.

But THurrock charged up the other end, slotting a penalty to deny Blues a bonus points.

CROSS COUNTRY: Chichester Runners finished their Sussex Cross Country League campaign at Bexhill earlier this month emerging with individual and team medals after a hard-fought season.

With both Liam Dunne and Ned Potter in good form, the club’s U17 men knew a solid all-round performance was all that was needed to secure team medals.

THey excelled themselves by finishing just one point behind league winners Hastings on the day to secure third place overall. Dunne (second) also took individual honours.

In the seniors, Chi succeded in their aim to keep both the men’s and women’s senior teams in the top flight.

THe women were led home by 18-year old Alice Cox-Rusbridge (15th) who continued her fine winter season by winning the overall Sussex League title.

Next home for Chichester was Maggie King, 16, who finished 22nd overall THe men, too, regained their status but only by the skin of their teeth, finishing sixth of eight teams.

Leo Stallard had his best run of the season to finish in 10th place on the day, closely followed by fellow Under 20 Ben Morton.

Chi look for repeat of five star show as in-form Uckfield visit

GB calling for Falcons' Amy CHICHESTER Falcon Amy Morris has made history by becoming the youngest squad member to gain international honours.

THe 11-year-old Bishop Luffa School pupil has been selected

by GB Softball to represent Great Britain in 2019.

Her first competition of the season will be an U-15 tournament in Moergestel, Holland, in late March, followed by the U-13 European Championships in Collecchio, Italy, later in the Summer.

In the meantime, she continues to train both at the Falcons Softball Club in Chichester and with her GB team-mates in London.

She also attends the BSUK Softball Academy in Slough once a month, to work with older age groups and develop her skills.

Falcons coach Dave Morris said: "THis is Amy’s third year of achieving international selection and remains as one of the very youngest in the squad.

"Making up for her age (and size) deficit with her skill and commitment, the Falcons can look forward to watching Amy’s progress as she continues to rise through

the international ranks."

Meanwhile, locally, the Falcons senior team took the first place trophy in the annual Solent League Indoor Tournament.

After meeting the other seven sides, the Chi side played out the day with five wins, a tie and a loss.

THose results were enough for the Falcons to soar into the gold final where they narrowly defated UPSU Shafters in a tight defensive game.

It was just rewards for the Falcons squad which had to change its tactics for the indoor game.

THe greatly reduced playing area requires teams to adapt their game to avoid getting caught off the wall.

However, the Falcons are well-versed in the art of ‘small-ball’ where runs are manufactured with smart base-running and precise, disciplined hitting.

THis tactic, complemented by a squad with plenty of depth, including two 18-yearolds, two players over 45 and a debutant, proved extremely successful for Chi on the day.

THe tournament also raised nearly £400 for the Samaritans charity.

CHICHESTER City will be looking to build on an topsy-turvy week as they welcome the in-form AFC Uckfield Town to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

Miles Rutherford's side opened up a six point lead at the top of the SCFL Premier after knocking five past Crawley Down Gatwick last weekend.

Sids look to sink the Pirates

SCFL Division One side Sidlesham will be looking to pick up their first win in close to a month as they welcome third-place Bexhill United to the Recreation Ground tomorrow.

Steve Bailey's side have only played one match in the last month, a 3-1 home defeat to AFC Varndeanians last weekend.

A late strike from Ryan Chittock was scant reward for a Sids showing that was full of effort and endeavour.

Bailey will be wanting to see more of that tomorrow (3pm) against THe Pirates who have scored the most of any side in their league.

Fellow Division Once side Selsey will be looking to take back fourth place as they host AFC Varndeanians tomorrow (3pm).

Blues were pushed down into fifth by the Brighton-based side after only managing a 2-2 draw at Hailsham last weekend.

While the result was perhaps not what manager Daren Pearce was looking for, he will be pleased with the resilience Selsey showed as Bradley Higgins-Pearce and THomas Atkinson netted late on to bag a point.

THeir ranks for the trip on Sunday (2pm) will be boosted with the addition of goalkeeper Nina Wilson from Championship side Lewes.

THe 19-year-old has previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion while also representing Sussex at county level.

Wilson will provide cover for Smith’s side who have seen both Sadie Blakely and Lauren Dolbear struggle with old injuries.

THe Chi manager said: "We have been unlucky this season to lose both of our first team keepers to old injuries.

"I've watched Nina play a number of times and she has always impressed me but since signing her on loan I've had the chance to talk to her and the first thing you notice is her warm personality and her professionalism.

"I'd like to thank Fran and Simon at Lewes for allowing us to sign Nina on loan and I believe that she will be a very valuable addition to our squad."

Chi had a weekend off although their development squad beat Lewes DS 2-0.

Pearce: Home form crucial as Rocks host second-place Boro Next Game

HARINGEY BORO (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is calling on his side to step up their home form - starting tomorrow when they welcome second-place Haringey Borough to the Nye Camp.

A common complaint from Rocks fans has been a lack of consistency, particularly when in front of their home fans But despite losing a third of their matches at Nyewood Lane in the league this campaign, Bognor remain in the playoff shake-up, sitting fifth in the Bostik Premier.

With close to a quarter of the season to go, Pearce knows the Rocks must make improvements if they are to keep up the momentum and remain in the mix come the end of the season.

With Haringey just six points above them and only winning once in their last five, the Bognor boss will be keen to make sure his side start by picking up three points tomorrow against the north London side.

Pearce said: "I am sure they [Haringey] will want to bounce back and they will enjoy our playing surface but it's a challenge for us.

"It's up there for us to go and do well and we know just how important the game is for both teams.

"Home form will decide where you come in the league at the end of the season.

"Our away form has been excellent this year but our home form has been very inconsistent.

We will hopefully have a few more players

available for selection for the game because it is important to get competition for places."

Among the long-term absentees who could be back in the starting line-up tomorrow are Keaton Wood, Corey Heath and Calvin Davies.

All three are back in training after being injured for most of the season.

THe most likely of the two to feature will be Davies, as the energetic full back made an appearance off the bench in the 0-0 draw at Bishop's Stortford last weekend.

Despite missing Joe Tomlinson (unavailable) and Richard Gilot (injury) the Rocks produced a spirited rearguard action in Hertfordshire to make the long journey back with a point.

It was a performance which the travelling Rocks fans have not often seen from their side but the clean sheet and defensive resilience gives then hope for a positive end to the season.

Pearce said: "We have good players and we have done well in recent weeks with six or seven missing.

"We are delighted with how the squad has performed in that time and we hope injuries clear up for the run in.

"If we have everyone back for last 11 games then I think we have a good chance of getting in the playoffs."

Semi with Seagulls confirmed IT took a couple of weeks to be confirmed.

But Rocks now know that standing in their way of a May date out at THe Amex will be Sussex Senior Cup favourites Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s.

THe young Seagulls have lifted the trophy in each of the past two seasons. But they only squeeked into the semi final of the county cup with a 2-0 extra time win over SCFL Premier side Eastbourne Town in midweek.

With the tie now confirmed, a decent crowd is expected for the last four clash which will see Rocks face Albion at Lancing's Culver Road on March 5.

One player who will be in the opposing line-up is left back Joe Tomlinson, who is on loan at Nyewood Lane from Albion. THe youngster will be back in the Rocks' ranks tomorrow after missing the Bishop’s Stortford game to play for Albion in a 1-0 away win over Manchester City in Premier League 2.

Bognor boss Jack Pearce said: “I am really pleased for Joe. THey did very well up there to get a result. Not many people get a result at City these days, at any level.

"Obviously he was a major miss for us because if there is one position we are struggling to cover it is Joe’s."

IT'S a few days now since the trip to Hertfordshire for the Rocks' 0-0 draw with Bishop's Stortford.

THe match itself was a strange one as we had to contend with their attacking threat quite a lot. In fact, I couldn’t believe it ended goalless as we really did have our backs against the wall for long periods.

Harvey and THeo both put their bodies on the line a number of times and Dan Lincoln had to be alert with so many corners and crosses.

I think our forwards were pretty frustrated, too, as whenever we did get the ball forward they just got it back straight away.

A point is a point though and we had a good go talking about it on the supporters coach during the long trip back.

It's a good crowd on there and, for trips like the one to Bishop's Stortford, it starts pretty early.

I'm normally the first one on the coach as I get picked up from Littlehampton station about 45 minutes before we're due at Nyewood Lane.

We then pick up a few people in Felpham such as Ken and Joe from the Flansham crossing. THen at Nyewood Lane everyone else gets on providing they are on time!

THere are a few serial offenders who are always a bit late like Michael Hall and Sergio Perrone and we always try to remind them of this fact when they inevitably are!

THere's always bit of banter on the coach and this week Ken Wood and Tommy Mac convinced Aldwick Mark and another chap called John that Mr Bean would be appearing at Seasons. It took a while until they realised we were having them on!

THe atmosphere is always friendly and newbies are always welcome. But most of the time we have the same faces in the same seats.

I'm normally near Ken White who is famous for his sparkly

green hat and green horn which means you can see and hear him from anywhere.

THen there's Rob who usually brings his Pringles which he shares round, although I think he's cutting down on them now, much to everyone's disappointment.

It's always good getting to know everyone. THey all have a slightly different opinion, too, which makes it interesting.

Much of the chat this week was about the club's inconsistency.

But we were all agreed that the main thing is looking at staying in that top five.

Looking at our fixtures with Dorking, Margate, Haringey and Worthing to come, there are a lot of teams to overcome to seal that playoff spot.

THere's also a bit of discussion about the super playoff which means that even if we win the Bostik Premier playoffs we may have to beat the playoff winners in another league to win promotion.

I think it makes the whole thing a bit of a farce.

Injured players is also a hot topic although with Calvin on the bench and Mason returning to the starting lineup last weekend, things are looking a bit more positive than in recent weeks.

We must start putting away our chances though, starting tomorrow against Haringey.

It is a crucial one as we need to start winning our home games. THey had a spell when they were flying but seem to be having a bit of a blip at the moment after losing a number of players to other clubs.

Personally, I would be happy with a 1-0 win as I think we just have to grind out some victories and that will be crucial lifting the team and our own supporters at home.

If we can get our players fit then I genuinely think we can make a good go to get into the top three. Without that then it will be difficult.
