City goes back to Highways for A27

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CITY MP Gillian Keegan has agreed to urgently seek a meeting with the Minister of State for the Department of Transport to ask for funding for the A27.

THe news comes after Mrs Keegan, Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum and West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith met last week to discuss how to respond to a letter from Highways England.

THe letter rejected both ‘Build A Better A27’ (BABA27) concept options for the A27 Chichester, including the preferred mitigated northern route supported by both councils.

Both councils confirmed their policy position on supporting both the mitigated northern route and the mitigated southern route with the MP. Commenting after the meeting, Cllr Goldsmith said: “It was a very positive discussion and we all agreed on the importance of securing Government support for a sustainable long-term solution for the A27 that has the support of the community.

“We are still awaiting further information from Highways England regarding their reasons for turning down the BABA27 schemes and we have asked for a copy of their consultants' findings.”

Cllr Dignum added: “Improvements to the A27 are absolutely vital for this area, and I am committed to working with the community, the county council and our MP to help achieve the best possible solution for our residents.”

It was agreed that Mrs Keegan would seek the meeting with MP Jesse Norman to ask for funding from the Government’s next Roads Investment Strategy programme (RIS2: which covers the period 2020-2025) to undertake further technical work based on the policies of both councils to improve the A27 at Chichester. THis could then form the basis for public consultation on the options and lead to future funding for a major Highways England scheme.

Meanewhile, the A27 Alliance action group believes that it is right for the focus of all parties, committed to Chichester’s common good, should be applied to securing workable plans and resources for prudent and practical upgrades to the existing A27.

A spokesperson said: "It seems to be the case that in the light of Highways England’s decision not to proceed with either option promoted by the county and district councils some return to sanity is emerging, except from the leadership of the county council.

"We note that wisely, the district council will be distancing itself from the increasingly hysterical and incoherent

campaign, let alone misinformation about the outputs of the ill-starred Build A Better A27 (BABA27) process, from Louise Goldsmith struggling to keep her and her backers’ dream of a northern route alive.

THe Alliance Group also stated that Cllr Dignum had written to them confirming the viewpoint of Highways England's Peter Phillips on the northern route. It read: "Part of the new bypass and a relocated local road (New Road) would intrude into the South Downs National Park and would also impact on Goodwood Estate. THe intrusion into the park is against the national policy statement for National Networks (Section 5.150) and therefore with the presence of a viable alternative (all five of the RIS 1 options) the mitigated northern option is highly unlikely to obtain approval through the development consent order process.

"THe option would also likely require substantial works at the Boxgrove roundabout, probably in the form of grade separation. THis work is outside of the original scheme and has not been included in the cost figures.

"THe estimated cost of the mitigated northern option is in excess of £480m.

THe costs also do not include for mitigation of the construction impacts on Goodwood estate operations or events. THe mitigation enhancements would not increase the scheme benefits and hence the benefit cost ratio would be greatly reduced from previous options T resulting in a scheme that would not offer value for money and therefore the option is not supportable by Highways England as a promotable RIS scheme."

Abby invites adults to get crafty with her

f Creative Crafters events are coming to the city this month

Abby Newell, from the Creation Station, is about to start her first adult classes this month after her successful children classes in the area.

“I have been running classes and events for babies and children in the area since last April and I love it," she said.

"I can’t wait to launch Creative Crafters and offer grown-ups the opportunity to be just as creative as the children!”

Creative Crafters will run once a month, with an afternoon session at Boston Tea Party in Chichester on the first Tuesday of each month.

THese monthly Creative Crafters events are relaxed and social and include creating at least two handmade crafts.

All the materials, tools and instructions are provided, no experience is necessary, and classes are open to adults of all ages and abilities.

Abby continued: “Engaging in craft activities as part of a group can offer numerous benefits. From making new friends and learning new skills to the positive effects on mental

health and maintaining physical dexterity in the hands.

"Adult Creative Crafters events are the perfect way to unwind, de-stress and reclaim some much needed ‘me-time!’

"People can book onto an existing session or book us to provide their own Creative Crafters event, perhaps for a group of retired people, for a party celebration or for a hen night."

From page one "THe school car park is almost finished. We are just going through some final snagging and we are working with the school because, with children, it has to be safe, of course.

“We are almost there, and as soon as we can open the school car park, we will open it, which is good news.

“We are working hard to resolve the parking in Stane Street. I have apologised before for it and I will now do it again. We are now seeing the numbers of cars reducing.

"At the moment, we are now averaging about 20 a day and in our count, out of interest, we also see there are about 35 residents' cars on the roads as well so it's not to say there is anything wrong with that, because you live here but equally they are not just Rolls-Royce employees, there is a good mix. " When asked by a resident why people were still parking in the street, Mr Ball said: “If you work for Rolls-Royce and you are within the Chichester or Bognor Regis postcodes you are not allowed to park on-site unless you lift share. Sharing a ride is part of our green travel policy, even if you live in Chichester or Bognor Regis.”

Another resident complained that from their bedroom window they could see the car park which had 60 to 70 spaces free in the car park every day and people were still parking in Stane Street and questions were asked about the queues which formed because employees starting their shift early were often unable to enter the car park until it had emptied of cars from the last shift.

Mr Ball said he supported double yellow lines in the area and was working with councils to achieve this, especially on pinch points in the roads.

After the meeting, county councillor Jeremy Hunt told the Chichester Post: "Both I and West Sussex County

Council officers are currently looking at this issue and, together with the police constable, formulating some plans to try to address the problem.

THese proposals should be coming forward for consultation in the usual way in the next couple of months.

"I would just add that not all the cars belong to Rolls Royce employees.

Some are owned by local residents from the adjoining estates who have to park on the main road and Claypit Lane because of parking restrictions on those estates, but I do acknowledge that many of them are.

"Finally, I would add that on behalf of the local community I am in regular contact with Rolls Royce.

"I can assure you that they do treat this issue very seriously and are proactive in trying to prevent any illegal parking. You also refer to their recent investment in a new car park, so I think it is important not to forget the new ‘kiss and drop’ car park they have also provided, which is solely for the use of THe March CE Primary School, thereby addressing a long running parking issue for parents."

In a letter sent to Sussex Police on Tuesday, by Westhampnett Parish Council, the chairman Bill Harding explained that an accident had occurred on Monday outside Madgwick Park.

He said: "It is the third one along this section of road within nine weeks. THe Parish Council requests that more permanent 30mph signs are introduced on Stane Street and Madgwick Lane, including such measures as painting 30 on the road at regular intervals.

"It is also requested that double yellow lines are painted forthwith, on both sides of Stane Street, from the west side of Claypit Lane junction, to the mini-roundabout at Maudlin, in accordance with part of the parking proposals being prepared by WSCC."

` Local Plan Review RESIDENTS and businesses are being reminded to have their say on the Local Plan Review before consultation ends on THursday, February 7.

People are being asked for their views about how and where development needs such as housing, employment and retail should be met and managed in the Chichester district over the next 15 years.

THe document sets out the council’s proposed planning strategy for the period up to 2035.

THe Local Plan does not include areas within the South Downs National Park.

THese areas are subject to a separate plan undertaken by the South Downs National Park Authority.

Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum said: "THis consultation is extremely important as the Local Plan affects where we live, work and relax, where new shops and community facilities are built and it also protects our historic buildings and the natural environment.

"It is crucial that as many people as possible comment on the draft plan so that councillors are informed of public views before they consider any changes to the plan."

Labour proposes a Metro network

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER Labour Party has announced proposals to launch a consortium to press for major rail, bus and road improvements with the creation of a ‘South Coast Metro network’.

Phil Wilson, Chichester Labour’s spokesperson for transport, said: "A consortium of interested parties, local authorities and business leaders would be the first step towards gaining central government support to transform regional rail and create the truly integrated public transport network that we desperately need in Chichester and along the south coast."

Only last week, West Sussex County Council announced further cuts in bus subsidies which will result in the withdrawal of some vital services and routes.

THe Labour Party suggests that complete long-term failure of leadership in the development of our local economy with the infrastructure improvements required to attract businesses, growth and jobs has been illustrated by the inability of all levels of government to make key infrastructure decisions on the future of the A27.

Mr Wilson continued: "With yet another delay to a decision on the future of the A27, the alleviation of traffic as well as the reduction in pollution by creating a vastly improved public transport network should be a key priority,

especially with the proposed local plan which seeks to build an additional 10,000 homes in the district.

"Considering rail upgrades and improvements such as THameslink and Crossrail, it is time that these benefits trickled down to us on the south coast.

But if we are going to benefit, we need a Labour council to fight for that investment and to fight for our corner of the world that has been so utterly failed by the Tories.

"Only Labour has the local and national vision to create the jobs and infrastructure required for the 21st century.

"Labour policy regarding the introduction of regional development banks with a substantial injection of public infrastructure investment are central components of the Labour party’s economic plans to kickstart the economy.

"Such investment potential could be utilised to address the bottlenecks that are holding back our local economy and tackle persistent rural and coastal poverty that blight many communities."

THe party states that a local consortium, led by a Labour-run Chichester District Council, would conduct feasibility studies to explore the potential of upgrades to track and signalling; find alternatives to existing level-crossings and refurbish current stations as well as identify locations for new stations; consider the integration of local bus services to extend the network, beyond the confines of rail and explore options for park and ride.

Groups around city write responses over local plan

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS from Fishbourne have written a response to Chichester District Council setting out the reasons why they are objecting to 250 new homes in the parish.

THe Fishbourne Neighbourhood Plan review group has raised its main concerns based on five reasons. THese are: • THe lack of any declared criteria for what otherwise seems a purely arbitrary allocation taking no account of the local situation • THe impact of the proposed wildlife corridor on land in the eastern part of the village (Clay Lane) • Policy on Bethwines Farm - there needs to be more openness, clarity and consistency about the district council’s view on Bethwines Farm • Conflict between policies and practice (infrastructure and transport) • Uncertainty about the A27 In the written response to the council, the group states: "We are aware of the requirement for revised neighbourhood plans to have made good progress by June, 2019, in order to demonstrate that the local plan review strategy can be delivered.

"Our work, however, is hindered by the unacceptable process by which the allocation of 250 additional homes for

Fishbourne was made and the resultant confusion and traffic issues."

Cllr Adrian Moss said: "As the elected district councillor for Fishbourne, I have attended all the meetings of the Fishbourne Plan review group which has been working on a new Fishbourne Plan and advising the parish council on the views of local residents.

"One major area of concern from the group was indeed how the 250 houses were allocated to Fishbourne. Indeed, people are of the view that Fishbourne cannot sustain 250 additional house, especially if the wildlife corridors are proposed on land that had been

identified as potential development land.

"THere is no criteria for proposing 250.

It appears an arbitrary number.

"THe group are of the view that the council has not taken into account their views in putting forward the local plan review despite the village working closely with the district council over many years.

"In fact, the review flies in the face of the neighbourhood plan that the village prepared only recently."

ChiCycle, Chichester’s Cycle Campaign, has greeted the local plan review with caution.

THe group states that walking and cycling should be put at the top of the list

according to THe National Institute for Health and Care Excellence whereas the measures listed in the local plan are vague and often down the bottom of the list.

Institute statistics reveal that physical inactivity is responsible for one in six deaths and one in four adults are obese in the UK. Sarah Sharp, co-ordinator of ChiCycle, said: "We need to prioritise other means of getting around not always the car.

"Cycle paths are mentioned in the Local Plan but it doesn’t spell out what we mean by this – painted lines on the road are not going to deliver the modal shift we need."

` Police reports OVER THE week from Monday, January 21, to Sunday, January 27, there were several reports made to Sussex Police in the Chichester area, including: In Lumley Road, Southbourne, on Monday, January 21, a vehicle parked outside a property was broken into. Nothing of value was stolen. Serial 0016 21/1.

Two vehicles were damaged while parked on a driveway in Stocks Lane, East Wittering, overnight into Tuesday, January 22. One had a roof damaged and the other had tyre damage. Serial 0263 22/1.

On THursday, January 24, a Piaggio Vespa scooter was stolen from a garage block in Lime Close, Chichester. Serial 0824 24/1.

In Broyle Road, Chichester, on Friday, January 25, a theft of a bike from a shed was reported.

Serial 0894 25/1.

A vehicle was broken into outside a property in Winterbourne Road, Chichester, and some personal possessions stolen, including sunglasses and a SATnav on Saturday, January 26.

In Lloyd Road, Chichester, on Saturday, January 26, a Vauxhall Zafira vehicle was stolen from a property.

It is believed the keys were taken from inside the property.

On Sunday, January 27, a vehicle was broken into in Palmers Field Avenue, Chichester, and a number of items stolen including sunglasses, and several electrical items. Serial 1211 27/1.

People's Vote campaign group asks the city questions over government CAMPAIGNERS were out in force on Saturday in the city centre asking members of the public about the situation surrounding Brexit.

On January 26, the European Movement Portsmouth and Chichester branch campaigned in Chichester for a ‘People’s Vote'.

Fourteen members and supporters turned out to help and many members of the public were keen to discuss the issues and have a chance to express their views in advance of the next phase of the crucial votes in the House of Commons which took place on Tuesday.

THey were invited to put stickers on a ‘Brexitometer’ which listed the three main options open to the Government.

THe event was part of a national day of action co-ordinated by the ‘People’s Vote’ campaign

in conjunction with other pro-remain national campaigning organisations to let MPs know what their constituents think in advance of January 29.

European Movement spokesman John Wilton said: “Whichever way you voted, more than two and a half years ago, nobody voted for a deal that makes us poorer and leaves us with less control.

"It’s now clear that what was promised in the referendum two and a half years ago simply cannot be delivered.

"And whatever form Brexit takes, it will leave us in a much worse position than the deal we already have as part of the European Union.

"THat’s why the final decision must now be handed back to the people - because only they can sort this mess out."

A NEW flexible office and co-working space has been opened in the city.

Sussex-based Freedom Works have opened the site in Metro House, Chichester.

"We’re extremely excited about the Chichester site, which is in a prime location for those travelling by foot, rail and road," explains Jon Trigg, founder of Freedom Works.

"West Sussex has a higher than national average of micro businesses, which are the lifeblood of our economy, and we’re excited to be able to offer these businesses a place to call home where they can collaborate and grow."

Litter Ladies brave the cold to pick up our city's rubbish

THe group met on Saturday and were joined by West Sussex District Council leader Louise Goldsmith and Fishbourne district councillor Adrian Moss.

Cllr Goldsmith said: "THis is the second time that I have been out picking up rubbish with the Litter Ladies.

"THey are a fun group and even on such a cold day so many turned out that it really was a case of many hands, or maybe pickers, make light work with the area looking clean and free of rubbish and plastics after we finished.

"In a lovely city such as Chichester that is really rewarding."

Mandy Hine, who runs the Litter Ladies, which was set up last year, said: "We have a wonderful group of volunteers who give up their time to clear areas that are particularly covered in litter.

"We are not just ladies, we have men too! We walk, talk, laugh and enjoy helping the community and hopefully it makes a better visual appearance of the beautiful city we live in."

THe group was started in April when four of the Litter Ladies went to Mandy’s

house for supper. Mandy arranged to pick her friends up but told them they had to wear old clothes as they’d be doing an activity before eating.

One of the ladies thought they were going mud sliding, but, in fact, they were about to do their first litter pick at Fishbourne Creek, near to where Mandy lives.

“We all enjoyed it so much, one of the Litter Ladies, Elizabeth Sawday, of Apuldram Roses, suggested that we do it on a regular basis and that’s how the group was formed," explained Mandy.

"Sadly, litter is a constant issue in our towns, cities, beaches and rural areas.

We need to educate people not to drop it, it’s not only irresponsible but it’s also a huge danger to our wildlife and sea life.

One of the main items of litter found by the Litter Ladies are single-use plastic bottles.

Cllr Moss said: "Litter around the district is an increasing problem. THat is why the initiative taken by THe Litter Ladies is so important.

"I was delighted to spend time with the Litter Ladies and Louise Goldsmith, the local county councillor, on Saturday, collecting litter in Chichester College car park. We collected a lot of litter and rubbish scattered across the car park and around the college grounds.

"THe Litter Ladies are making a real difference and I am committed to supporting them."

An invitation to view artists' journeys through mixed media at the Oxmarket

LAST MONTH the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester re-opened it’s doors once again with a moving exhibition.

THe display is by five talented artists, all of whom, in their own way, have benefited from the restorative powers of their personal creative process and come together to present Creative Redemption.

Inviting viewers to experience their journeys and response through the use of mixed media, textiles, painting and found objects the exhibition aims to offer empathy, encouragement and hope.

With refreshing honesty, Helen Frost, Christine Habib, Nicola Hancock, Helio Teles and Julie Turner have revealed their personal experience through their individual responses, presenting a highly sensitive and powerful collection of works.

As someone who suffers from anxiety, Helen Frost takes great comfort in daily walks amongst nature, often in quiet and secluded places along the coast.

It is in these surroundings she can practise her version of mindfulness taking time to absorb her surroundings.

Focusing her attention in this way stops her mind from the cycle of negative thoughts. THese walks started as an attempt to help cure herself - they have now become walks attempting to help cure our coastline.

Christine’s present work has been created whilst convalescing over the last three months and is based on the many experiments she made working with different materials during her recent studies. She is also referencing a response to early childhood memories of days with many members of her family who worked in the textile industry - cloth and fibre were part of everyday life and feature strongly in her own work.

Trained as a scientist Nicola turned initially to photography then over three decades to painting, sculpture, installations, textile work and in some cases combinations of all of these elements! Her work examines the structures of life and feeling; physical, emotional and

Her science taught her to look beyond the immediate reality of things to understand the deeper connections and organisations of our world. Her art practice gave feeling and shape to her life experiences, including the joys and traumas of childhood, and more recently the impact of cancer – a journey which this exhibition charts.

Brazilian born artist Hélio Teles worked as a councillor and supported the land reform movement. Much of his work portrays the chronic and systemic nature of poverty in Brazil.

Here he has transformed his memories of the fragile lives of those he worked with into an artistic interpretation of the world they inhabited. THe walls, windows and doors of their simple houses, have become for him an expression of their struggle, and of their hope. In his more recent work he reflects upon the human desire for peace and security amidst the unstable and troubling conflict of recent years.

Julie Turner trained as a primary school teacher and has a degree in Psychology, with a particular interest in child development. Further studies led to working as an art therapist and gaining a degree in Fine Art. Julie now works full time as a Mixed Media

Textile Artist with a studio in the Euroart complex in Tottenham North London.

Julie’s work reflects her preoccupation with the significance of early childhood experiences, in particular those of maternal deprivation and loss. She works with rust and natural dyes to convey meaning. Her work is often in the form of faceless dolls and unwearable dresses and is intended to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.

Gallery manager, Sophia Williams said: "It's been a pleasure to curate this exhibition which demonstrates a clear message and deals with issues of discomfort, which many of us experience at some stage in our lives, not always visibly either.

"Born out of this notion, the works here - all beautiful in their own right, offer intrigue, interest and meaning.

"I hope the works will resonate to many and maybe inspire their own journeys and creations."

THe exhibition will be open until Sunday, February 10 from 10am until 4.30pm at the Oxmarket Gallery which is closed Mondays.

A ‘Meet THe Artists’ event will be held tomorrow, Saturday, February 2, from 2pm to 4pm.

Bognor Regis Write Club has announced its first ever short story competition.

First prize is £100+, 2nd prize £50+ and 3rd prize is £25+. THe 20-25 shortlisted winners will have their work produced in a book to be launched at the prize-giving ceremony in the summer.

Exchanging some great finds at the year's first Swap Shop

THere was the usual eclectic range of pre-loved items up for grabs for free at the Newell Centre in Tozer Way including books, clothes, homeware,

tools, fabric, stationery and furniture.

One new grandmother left with a lovely little blue bike with stabilisers, another Swap Shopper found a leather pouffe, and another a classic Barbour jacket among the clothing rails.

Event co-ordinator Sue Gilson said: "People were extremely generous as ever and we couldn't put on the event without our fantastic team of volunteers.

"THe café serving homemade soup and bread and cakes is always so well

supported and helps cover our costs.

"THe refugees at Calais were uppermost in our minds, too, at the Swap Shop with donations such as warm clothing, sturdy boots and new underwear coming in, and we made £70 for Calais from a sale of clothing brought back from the French camp unsuitable for refugee purposes but good quality."

THe Swap Shop, which is held four times a year and is a free exchange of goods including books, clothing, homeware,

toys, tools, fabric and garden items, was another success with many people going home happy with their finds.

Linda and Lucy Wooding, who run the Chichester-based refugee network Kindness Without Borders, were also on hand to give out the latest information on the situation.

Hair students learn style tips in masterclass

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HAIRDRESSING students at Chichester College enjoyed a special masterclass in styling by one of the best in the business.

Renowned stylist and head judge of TV’s Extreme Hair Wars, Martyn Holmes, showcased how to create a timeless ‘vintage tong’ style, giving students the knowledge they will need for achieving glamorous 1940s-style waves.

After watching Martyn’s demonstration – and peppering the stylist with questions about his background and life in the hair industry – the students then spent the afternoon working with him to recreate the look themselves.

First year apprentice Tayla Rigby was one of the students enjoying the opportunity, and she said it has inspired her to work harder to achieve her dreams.

She said: “It was really exciting. I really like Extreme Hair Wars and I’m a fan of his. It’s amazing to see someone like Martyn coming in to the college and giving us a chance to learn from him.

“It makes you more motivated, I think. Even though I’m just starting out, watching people like Martyn and Lee Stafford makes me want to do more and get involved in more shows.

“You can see from them that you can

do some really great things, and they were just like us.”

Alongside his television work and running his own salon, Martyn also works closely with Lee Stafford Education to deliver training to students at Lee Stafford’s 11 partner colleges around the country, which includes Chichester College.

Martyn said: “I’m passionate about this industry and when you get to a certain age – like I have – it’s about giving back and getting the next generation ready. It’s sharing knowledge, and that’s important.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of working with young people and passing on my knowledge.

“THis is my first time in Chichester and it’s a beautiful college with some amazing facilities. It was lovely to be working with a full house of students, who have been wonderful.

“I can see that a lot of them are very enthusiastic and it’s good to see passion for their career growing.

“THere’s always going to be a need for stylists. It’s not one of those trades that can be done by a robot or a computer.

We’re very lucky that we will be doing what we love for as long as we want to across the world.

"We’re lucky.

It’s a great industry to work in.”

WEST SUSSEX County Council cabinet members have agreed to continue to fund fire intervention and prevention services and business resilience services.

At a meeting on Tuesday, it was agreed to give more time to look for alternative funding and sponsorship options to deliver these services in the future.

It means proposed savings of £400,000 for fire prevention and £100,000 for business resilience services no longer form part of the budget decisions for 2019-2020.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “THis has always been a very difficult area for us to look at, especially as we see the value of these preventative projects.

"We have listened to feedback from the public and our select committee and I’m delighted we’ve been able to find funding to give more time to develop business and sponsorship opportunities so these services can continue after 2020.”

THe 2019-2020 revenue budget goes before the full council on February 15, for final approval.

Funding to support homeless charities HOMELESS charities will receive extra funding from the council.

West Sussex County Council cabinet members have allocated £750,000 in funding to support homeless charities in the county.

THe aim of the funds is to help organisations to make the transition to new arrangements following changes to housing related support funding that will come into effect later this year.

Homeless charities will be able to bid for funding to help with the transition to new models of working and partnerships.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “We are acutely aware that making the changes

required may be difficult for some organisations who help some of our most vulnerable residents.

“We have listened carefully to the feedback from the public, our partners and the select committee and have identified additional funds to help them during a potentially difficult transition.

“THis funding could be used to help create some alternative and creative solutions to some very difficult problems. At all times West Sussex County Council adults’ services and the cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, will be there to help.”

THe revenue budget for 2019-2020 goes before the full council on February 15, for final approval.

Art gallery at uni for charity THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester is hosting an art exhibition at the Fine Art Space Gallery.

THe event promises to be a great celebration of art and music in aid of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and is free and open to public from February 4-8, from 9.30am to 5pm. .

THe trust supports local children in the region who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or terminal illness by providing paediatric nursing care at home.

Jazz and art combined evenings are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of that week from 7pm until 9pm.

THe head of jazz at Chichester University, Nick Reynolds said: "THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust is an incredible charity which the University of Chichester music department has been supporting through concerts and events over many years.

"THis event is to raise money for the trust as well as provide an exciting collaboration between the fine arts and the jazz department at the University of Chichester.

"Jazz has always strived to be a music of inclusivity, diversity, creativity and innovation and it still holds an important place as an evolving global artform.

Artist Fabrice Cure has produced a series of works that in his own words ‘celebrate the history of jazz through its performers; from its African and American roots to the present day as a form of vivid, multicultural expression.’

"THis is also a celebration of art in general and its importance to contemporary society and culture. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the university.”

Hospice launches a furniture appeal A SPECIAL appeal has been launched

by St Wilfrid’s Hospice to help buy specialist items for patients to use in the new hospice.

THe furniture includes state of the art Montcalm beds, hybrid Oska mattresses and recliner chairs, which will allow the new hospice in Bosham to open its doors to full effect.

While as much of the existing equipment as possible will be moved from the existing hospice, many other items are also required for both patients and visitors, such as chairs, tables and TVs, meaning that donations of all sizes will make a real and tangible difference.

Alison Moorey, chief executive, said: "We’ve now reached that last crucial stage with the remaining £900,000 is needed in a very short time to ensure

our new facility will be fully ready to welcome and care for patients.

"We’re asking anyone who supports the wonderful work of the hospice to give whatever they can to help keep the fundraising momentum going in the final weeks of our appeal."

St Wilfrid’s new purpose-built hospice in Bosham is due to open in late spring.

Since opening in 1987, St Wilfrid’s has cared for over 17,000 patients living with terminal illnesses as well as supporting their loved ones.

THe new hospice will enable St Wilfrid’s to further develop its specialist care and expand on the variety of support services it can offer the community.

CUTBACKS will see some bus routes around Chichester and Bognor Regis reduced.

West Sussex County Council is cutting its subsidy to bus operators by £300,000 to £2.27m in the coming year to help to make up for a decrease in its government funding.

THe result will see Saturday services on the Compass route 85/85A from Chichester to Arundel withdrawn because of low numbers.

Stagecoach routes 46/47 between Chichester's East Broyle and the city centre will have a reduced frequency as will the Stagecoach 50 route from the city centre to Summersdale.

Both will also see the link from West Street to the bus station axed.

Stagecoach's 54 route between Chichester and Petersfield will see its 7.34am and 5.50pm services withdrawn but a new 6am journey from Chichester Petersfield will start.

THe 56 route from Arundel Park in Chichester to Old Bosham will also see fewer buses.

Cllr Roger Elkins, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said every effort had been made to limit the impact of the changes.

"Last year, our bus user survey received more than 4,300 responses and we have been using this to help understand which services were of greatest benefit to residents," he said.

He thanked bus operators and community groups for working with the council to limit the cutbacks.

He also pledged the council would see if residents without alternative transport could be helped. Most West Sussex bus services are unaffected because they are run commercially.

Park warnings over high CO2

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESEARCHERS from the Met Office have announced they expect to record one of the largest rises in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 this year.

Nick Heasman, pictured right, country and policy manager at the South Downs National Park Authority, and an expert in woodland management to control carbon dioxide levels, said the news was a big worry.

He said: “It’s concerning that 2019 is expected to record one of the biggest rises in CO2 and this is certainly a warning siren about the vital importance of protecting and enhancing Britain’s forests.

“THe South Downs is the most forested national park in England and Wales and, while only one woodland region of

many, it’s crucial that our green lungs are conserved to soak up the large amounts of CO2 cities and towns produce.

“One of the key measures moving forward to help reduce CO2 will be to lock up carbon not just in the trees but in the soil."

A recent global study concluded that 26 per cent of carbon was locked up in trees, but the rest is held beneath the trees, recycling hundreds of years of carbon production.

He added: "THis is why, on the 100th anniversary of the creation of THe Forestry Commission, we’re working really closely with woodland partners and farmers to not only protect and plant more trees, but to protect the soils.

“One of the main threats to controlling excessive CO2 in the atmosphere is the prevention and management of increasingly prevalent tree disease such as Ash Dieback Disease. THis will be

a continuing challenge for woodland partners in the years ahead.”

THe South Downs National Park has over 38,000 hectares of woodland which covers approximately a quarter of the landscape.

Met Office researchers expect to record one of the biggest rises in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 in 2019.

You have almost certainly developed presbyopia - the professional term for long-

sightedness, which is the opposite of myopia or short-sightedness.

THe condition is completely normal and natural in most cases because it is a result of ageing and that's why it is so common for middle-aged and older people to start to notice difficulties with reading and near vision tasks which used to seem easy.

As well as difficulty focusing, especially in low light, you may have headaches and eye strain as your brain tries to make sense of changes caused by loss of elasticity in the lens of one or both eyes. THe eye starts to focus light behind the retina rather than on it, leading to blurring of small, near objects.

Most people over the age of 35 are at risk for developing presbyopia and everyone becomes affected to some degree. THe term comes from the Greek presby, meaning old, and ops, meaning sight.

THe condition was mentioned as early as the writings of Aristotle in the 4th century BC and glass lenses to ease the problem first came into use in the late 13th century.

Depending on the work you do and the range of activities you enjoy you may be more, or less, aware of the ageing process in your eyes.

Farmers, builders and other workers who spend a lot of time outdoors are usually some of the last groups of users who recognise their visual changes while computer-users, craftsmen and librarians may be seeking

solutions to their difficulties much sooner.

And there are plenty of solutions available through optometrists, who will also check for other underlying age-related health issues, when you have a sight examination.

Quite often, mature people with presbyopia have never previously sat in a optician's chair but in modern practices everything is calm, professional and efficiently reassuring.

Speakers fall silent for PUSH opera

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DESPITE a busy time at Westminster with Brexit negotiations at the forefront, MPs gathered to watch a special opera on Monday.

Chichester MP Gillian Keegan hosted a performance of the opera, Push, in Westminster that was attended by leaders in the Jewish community along with members from both houses of Parliament.

THe production was organised by the Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day Committee, led by Cllr Clare Apel and Chichester Mayor Martyn Bell.

THe opera, performed in Speaker’s House, told the true story of Simon Gronowski who, along with his sister and mother, was due to be deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943.

During their transportation, Simon’s mother pushed her 11-year-old son off the train in an effort to spare him the horrors of the camp.

Simon, who never saw his family again, attended the performance in person.

THe production involved community choirs from Chichester and soloists from the university.

THe idea to bring this remarkable story to Westminster was conceived after Mrs Keegan attended the debut performance of Push last year at Chichester Cathedral.

In Westminster this week the Chichester MP also put her name to the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, pledging her support to honour those who were murdered during this dark period of history and pay tribute to the extraordinary survivors, like Simon, who work tirelessly to educate young people today.

To further raise the profile of the Push performance and Holocaust Memorial Day, Mrs Keegan highlighted the rise of antisemitism in today’s society in Prime Minister's Questions and also contributed to a Parliamentary debate where she called for more to be done to combat all discrimination.

She also explained that part of the group performing the show had never even sung before doing the opera and

said it was all down to getting them focused on something and coming together as a community.

After the performance, Mrs Keegan said: "THis is the second time I have watched the Push opera and it was just as moving.

"Having it performed in Parliament was a wonderful way to remember those who died but also those who survived one of the darkest times in human history, so it was such a huge privilege to have Simon attend.

"I hope the performance has put a spotlight on the dangers of discrimination, especially with antisemitism becoming more prevalent across Europe and here at home.

"It was also humbling to have Chichester’s talented contribution to mark Holocaust Memorial Day recognised in Westminster."

Cllr Bell added: "Having local groups from Chichester perform this moving opera of Simon’s story in Speaker’s House was a fitting way of highlighting how Chichester has chosen to remember the six million victim of the Holocaust.

"His story not only draws attention to the worst aspects of human character but also some of the greatest.

"Now more than ever, we must emulate Simon’s message of forgiveness and respect."

THe five-piece band were nominated for best group in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017 and scooped folk band of the year and album of the year in the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2016.

WemsFest was started in 2011 to provide an annual multi-arts festival for the communities of

Westbourne and Emsworth.

It has since grown into a year-round voluntary arts organisation working as far afield as Compton and Worthing.

Founding director Mark Millington-Ringwood estimates that, over the years, they've sold nearly 50,000 tickets for a wide-ranging programme, which has included a specially-commissioned D-Day play, actress June Whitfield, folk icons Fairport Convention, classical cellist Ella Rundle, Palestinian oud player Adel Salameh, and African bandleader Dobet Gnahore, in more than 20 venues.

IN A BRITISH northern coastal town, three young men are coming home from war, their interwoven stories are the basis for a new play, THe Unreturning.

Set at different times over the last 100 years, this compelling play is by Anna Jordan who won the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2013 for Yen at the Royal Court THeatre.

Originally a Frantic Assembly and THeatre Royal, Plymouth, production, the drama's cast is Joe Layton (Frankie), Jared Garfield (George), Jonnie Riordan (Nat) and Kieton Saunders-Browne (Finn).

Directed by Neil Bettles, who is associate director of Frantic Assembly, and featuring Frantic's celebrated physicality, THe Unreturning explores the profound effect that war has on young lives, and asks - what does coming home really mean? What is home?

And when experience has shattered you into a million pieces, will home help to put you together again, or treat you as an ugly truth it does not want to confront?

Audiences are warned the production has themes of war and loss, with loud bangs, strong language and flashing lights throughout.

Art offers up the opinion to crowds Theatre Review 

Having opened in 1996, it took both the West End and Broadway by storm, won the Olivier, Tony, Molière and every other major theatre award, and has been packing in audiences worldwide for more than 20 years.

Serge spends a huge amount of money on a modern painting, his best friends, Marc and Yvan are in two minds about it.

Marc instantly dismisses the painting as rubbish, but Yvan sees potential in the art, turning the whole play on its head and making the focal point on friendship rather than the art itself.

THe all-star cast features BAFTA-

nominated Nigel Havers as Serge, Olivier award-winning Denis Lawson as Marc and British comedy award-winning Stephen Tompkinson as Yvan.

THe quick witted remarks from all three cast members will leave you holding your sides for the pain of laughing, but the overall top prize has to go to Stephen Tompkinson for his amazing performance.

Not only did he play his part with utter brilliance, a master of timing and facial expressions without the need for words.

He also seemed to speak the words of frustration, everyone in the audience could relate to.

A story centred around a sole piece of artwork, which is effectively a blank canvas, stirs up hilarious remarks which are relatable and believable at every turn.

THe fascinating use of minimal props and scenes with the same table and three chairs, changing a simple piece of art so instantly the audience knows the place, is very clever too.

A top cast and a top play, one not to miss this winter season, hurry up and book your tickets as the last performance is tomorrow, Saturday.

AS PART of a 60-date tour, internationally-renowned guitarist Remi Harris will be performing at Chichester Jazz Club today (Friday).

Playing a variety of guitars and a ukulele, Remi will perform with a double bassist.

Hereford-born Remi (30) has performed at the BBC Proms, Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, on BBC 4 Television and live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.

He said: “I'm excited to be back on the road again. It’s great to be playing in our favourite venues and visiting new places, we’re so grateful for the audiences who come out and see us year on year."

Concert-goers will be treated to a spectacular night of virtuoso guitar playing - with influences from jazz, blues, rock’n'roll, funk and world music. Musically, the show is a reflection of Remi’s artistic influences -

In addition to repainting and cleaning the museum, a number of important aircraft and display changes have been made.

Visitors this half-term will see a major change to the location of aircraft, cockpits and simulators in the Merston aircraft hall. THe jet aircraft associated with the World Airspeed Record attempts (Meteor, Hunter and Swift) are now displayed, together and the full size Lysander replica, purchased by the museum last year, which has been moved to a corner of the hall to enable an additional exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the SOE’ to be curated by the curatorial team.

THis exhibition includes a film on the recruitment, training and operational activities of SOE agents (spies).

Additionally, displays from last year’s successful ‘Tangmere Aerodrome 100’ exhibition have now been moved into the museum to provide visitors with an insight on the formation and early years of RAF Tangmere.

For younger visitors, the museum has created ten family activities, including the ever popular ‘Tangmere Teddy Bear



Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum was born when a group of like-minded enthusiasts met to discuss ways of keeping the memory of RAF Tangmere alive.

Challenge’, which family members can pick up from the new ‘Family Activity Station’.

Adults can ‘fly’ the Lightning fast jet cockpit simulator for no additional charge to the admittance fee and in addition to other interactive simulators there are cockpits for both adults and children to enjoy. For refreshments, look no further than the NAAFI tea room.

A gateway to authentic and delicious Indian food We discovered what delights India Gate in Merston has to offer

by Daniel Field SITUATED along the busy A259 between Bognor Regis and Chichester, the India Gate restaurant at Merston is a welcoming sight for hungry and weary travellers alike.

Manager Michael Noor has run India Gate for eight years and has watched the business thrive as customers return again and again for their delicious food and excellent service.

My friend and I paid India Gate a visit to sample a variety of their dishes and we were cenrtainly not disappointed.

To begin, we opted for a selection of starters - the choice of food on offer at India Gate is exceptionally eclectic, and choosing what to have was the hardest part of all!

Starters average around £3.95 and include such diverse dishes as ostrich tikka, cooked in the tandoor, squid with lemon and tarragon, and a vegetarian option, dilalbo chop, a spicy potato cake, amongst the more familiar favourites. Main courses include a wide range of vegetarian, seafood, biryani and balti dishes.

We were first treated to an appetiser, beautifully charred tandoori king prawns in the shell, with a mild smoky spiciness to tease the palate, but not enough to overwhelm the delicate flavour of the pink prawns within.

Our next course arrived - a selection of starters, all of them equally delicious.

Most outstanding was the excellent crab maliabar, a homemade, deep fried patty of minced onion, potato and crab, with a crisp firm breaded outer coating, complemented by a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Along with the crab cake was a lamb samosa, a flaky Indian pastry, filled with pungent and spicy lamb, a sheek kebab, hot, meaty and aromatic, and possibly the best onion bhaji I have ever had, fresh fried juicy onion strips encased in a light crisp batter that melted in the mouth- with not a hint of grease.

To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of India Gate’s house wine. THe wine list is very comprehensive, with an international mix of familiar and less wellknown names, ranging in price from £27.00 to £79.00.

THe house wine is a more modest £14.50 a bottle and we plumped for the red. It was a highly drinkable soft, generous fruity wine with a delicious balanced structure and vanilla undertones, with India Gate’s own label adorning the bottle.

We were treated to a veritable feast as our next course arrived. THe next dish was the home made kathi kebab, a wrap made with soft Indian pastry encasing a tender lamb and herb filling with a mild spice and coriander flavour.

Also accompanying the curry dishes were sag sana gobi- a savoury vegetarian side dish comprising of whole nutty chick peas, spicy cauliflower and spinach, which had a pleasing palate-cleansing effect on the taste buds, and a sag rice to accompany this rich with spinach and a perfect companion to the rich and creamy curries.

And indeed, the stars of Indian Gate unsurprisingly were the curries themselves.

We chose to share the splendid lamb khalia, a stunning dish comprising succulent forkfuls of meaty, tender chunks of marinated lamb, highly spiced in an aromatic sauce with onion, ginger, pepper and garlic, with just enough heat to make the taste buds dance on the tongue.

We also opted for the equally superb, mouth-watering chicken lababdar. THis is a heavenly south Indian home style curry, resplendently sweet with the unique exotic flavour of coconut running through it. THese flavours were balanced out with piquant ginger and sweet chili, embellished with a smattering of almonds, to give this delectable traditional dish additional texture - a perfect marriage with the delicate morsels of chicken.

THe excellent cheese-stuffed paratha and scrumptiously puffy nan bread were just the thing to mop up the last drops of the curry sauces.

For dessert, we indulged in the house special blueberry classic, a refreshingly cold feast of whipped cream, flavoured with fruits and blueberry sauce, which

was a perfect conclusion to our wonderful gastronomic experience.

Michael Noor has certainly stretched the boundaries of Indian cuisine since coming to Chichester some ten years ago - his formula is highly successful- he now runs a chain of restaurants in the south east and has plans to expand further.

His sophisticated and unique menu, consisting as it does of the best of northern and southern India, Persian, Punjabi, and Bengali-influenced food, is pure pleasure, appealing to couples, and groups of friends alike.

With excellent food and service India Gate is a great choice for your Valentine's Day meal. Especially for February 14, the chefs have created a wonderful a la carte menu, and Michael is offering it at an exceptional price.

For a five-course meal including starters and desserts, as well as a glass of champagne, it is only £22.95.

Community News & Views CHICHESTER POST readers are being urged to get behind World Cancer Day this month. At CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, staff want everyone in Chichester and the rest of the county to ‘band together’ behind families affected by cancer.

Catriona Magee, CLIC Sargent fundraising and engagement manager for Sussex, said: "You can make a difference by donating just £2 to get your own their special Band Against Cancer wristband (available in three different collectable colours). Making a small donation, wearing your wristband and telling others about it is such an easy way to make sure you can help other families going through a really tough time.

"Our Cancer Costs research revealed that families spend an extra £600 a month on average while on treatment. As treatment for children and young people's cancer is often many miles from home at specialist hospitals (Southampton being the nearest principal treatment centre for West Sussex children), families have to pay for things like regular long-distance travel, additional food, clothing, parking and accommodation while having to keep up with regular bills including mortgage, rent and energy bills.

"With your help this World Cancer Day, CLIC Sargent can reach those families through our support workers and nurses who provide practical, emotional and financial support, to help minimise the damage cancer causes to young people."

Ten bands, costing £20, could pay for an hour with a CLIC Sargent community worker to help young people think about rebuilding their lives after cancer.

A CHARITY working to support adults with learning disabilities is calling on the public's help to raise donations for a gardening van.

THe Apuldram Centre in Chichester is looking to buy a van which costs round £21,000 and has already obtained half of the cost.

During the grass growing season, the Apuldram Centre runs a thriving contract gardening service. Adults with learning disabilities taking part in this activity will mow lawns and undertake basic gardening tasks for the public in the local community.

THis service not only provides the gardening customers with good value, it also provides an essential opportunity for the people the charity supports to gain confidence and vital work skills, which may help them to go onto gain future employment.

THey will engage in activities that directly link to maintaining and sustaining independence and be more equipped and skilled to move onto volunteering or work opportunities.

A new van, and therefore the expansion of the service, will enable new opportunities for the wider community to integrate with THe Apuldram Centre and to demonstrate and celebrate ability rather than disability and disadvantage.

Rachel Aslet-Clark, Apuldram's general manager, said: "We are pitching to West Sussex County Council's community initiative fund for £5,000 towards a new contract gardening van and we have to do this via a crowd-funding site called Spacehive.

"We are asking the community to pledge their support to this project (pledges start from £2). To be in with a chance of obtaining a donation from the council, we need to demonstrate that we have plenty of crowdfunding backers, even if the pledges are only small, everyone counts."

THe county council make its decisions on February 5, so the centre is urgently asking people to make a pledge and share with others.

YOUNG culinary talent in Chichester saw an inspirational morning at Ormiston Six Villages Academy on Tuesday last week.

THe regional Create & Cook Competition visited the school to run an inspiring workshop for those keen to enter the contest in 2019.

Young cooks aged 12 to 14 are challenged to create a two-course menu using as many local, seasonal ingredients as possible.

THe aim is to celebrate local food and learn about seasonality and sustainability.

For 2019, the Create & Cook Competition in the south is sponsored by Chichesterbased Natures Way Foods, and their development chef, Kristian Wright, gave the school a treat by demonstrating a delicious crab scotch egg with seasonal salad and a dressing.

“We have so many fantastic ingredients on our doorstep and I really wanted to spark the young cooks’ creativity by cooking up a dish using wonderful local Selsey crab!”

enthused Kristian.

Min Raisman, from fit2cook food education, who runs the competition, accompanied Kristian to Ormiston. THey will also be visiting THe Regis School and Angmering School.

“We really hope to have a Chichester school in our final this year as there are some great young cooks and keen teachers all keen to show off their skills in the kitchen and showcase their local ingredients.”

Young cooks enter the competition through their school food technology department and the closing date for entries is Friday, March 29. THere will be southern final in June, with cooks from schools in Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, at Newlyns School Cookery School.

THe winners win the fit2cook pestle and mortar trophy, a cash prize for their food technology department and have their recipes professionally styled and photographed.

TANGMERE'S Sage House is patrnering with family-run Bognor Regis based business, Pinks Vintage Ice Cream Vans and Tricycles, to help raise awareness for the local centre.

Sage House Dementia Support has an ambitious yarn bombing challenge and is calling for knitters to get busy to take on dementia.

Georgia Alston, business development manager at Pinks Vintage Ice Cream, has put a call out for crafters of all ages across the south east to contribute knitted or crocheted bunting, chain links or rope - a whopping 805 metres in total.

THe lengths will be joined together and form a half mile chain displayed in an undisclosed location in Bognor Regis at the end of March to raise awareness for the support Sage House offers people living with dementia, and their families and carers.

Georgia said: “We’re hugely excited for to be partnering with Sage House to help raise awareness and get the whole community involved.

"Anybody who wants to get crafting can participate, and there’s no minimum or maximum length per person - every little helps.

We can’t wait to reveal more about how we will be displaying the yarn bombing, but for now it’s top secret!”

Donated lengths can be in any colour and can be knitted or crocheted in chain link or bunting style so they can be joined together easily.

Nikki Clarke, of Dementia Support, commented: “THere is an estimated 14,820 people living in West Sussex with dementia. If the current rate of diagnosis remains, this number will increase to 26 per cent by 2021.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Pinks Vintage Ice Cream on this fun project that will not only bring our community of crafters together, but raise vital awareness for the work we do and how people can help. Please get knitting!”

So far, 200 metres have been pledged. All completed lengths should be dropped into Sage House, City Fields Way, Tangmere, P020 2FP before March 1.

THE FORGOTTEN Veterans UK have called on their colleagues at Building Heroes to give them a hand with improving and updating some of the facilities.

Victorian-era toilets in Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth, are being refurbished by military veterans training with Building Heroes, putting their skills to work on an urgently needed upgrade.

Over two days, these construction industry trainees, along with senior tutor Mike Sheldrick, lecturer

at Chichester College, and Karen Butcher, welfare and recruitment for Building Heroes, have been doing the preparation work required to the toilet block before modern showers and toilets can be installed.

THe interior of the building has been stripped back to bare brick, repaired and replastered, before constructing and installing stud walls, ready for the plaster board.

Once this work is complete, toilets, sinks and showers can be installed.

CHICHESTER Festival THeatre chairman, Sir William Castell, has announced that the Board has appointed Kathy Bourne as executive director of Chichester Festival THeatre.

Kathy Bourne is currently executive producer at Jonathan Church Productions. From 2006 – 2015, she was associate and festival producer at Chichester Festival THeatre where she was responsible for managing over 75 productions. She will take up her new post in May, sharing the leadership of the theatre with artistic director Daniel Evans.

Sir William said: ‘THe Board and I are delighted that Kathy Bourne will become executive director of Chichester Festival THeatre. Kathy is a superb theatre producer with extensive experience in both the subsidised and commercial sectors.

She dedicated many years to working at the theatre, bringing outstanding shows such as Gypsy and Young Chekhov to fruition. As a long-time Sussex resident, she and her family are also deeply connected to our local community. I look forward with keen anticipation and confidence to her new partnership with artistic director Daniel Evans.’

Kathy Bourne said: ‘I am thrilled to be re-joining Chichester Festival THeatre as executive director. It is an honour to be given the opportunity to work alongside Daniel and the incredibly talented Chichester team to continue to build on the success of this exemplary theatre. The history on the city's Theological College

By Pat Saunders, volunteer and Amanda Rogan, learning officer at the Novium Museum IN 1839, on the second Monday following Easter, the THeological College opened for the ‘instruction of candidates for holy orders in THeology and in the duties of Christian ministry’. THe THeological College was then located in ‘Cawley Priory’, South Pallant.

THe founder of the college was Archdeacon Manning (1808-1892) under the instruction of Bishop Otter. Manning had studied at Balliol College, Oxford, in the late 1820s.

In 1833 he was appointed curate of Lavington. Soon after, the rector, John Sargent, died and Manning succeeded him. He later married Sargent’s daughter, Caroline, but sadly she died young of consumption in 1837.

Manning did not remarry. He was also deputy to the aged Archdeacon and succeeded him as archdeacon in 1840. He was passionate about promoting education in sound church teachings although how this was delivered caused him to have disagreements with Bishop Otter.

By 1850, Manning had converted to Catholicism and in 1865 he was appointed Archbishop of Westminster. Manning had received £50 from future Prime Minister William Gladstone, an acquaintance from his time at Balliol College, towards the funding of the college.

THe first Principal of the college was the Rev Charles Marriott (1811-1858) who had been appointed at Easter. He was born at Church Lawford rectory, near Rugby, where his father was parish rector.

He entered Exeter College, Oxford, in March 1829, and later won a scholarship to Balliol.

He took a First in Classics and a Second in Mathematics.

When Mr Marriott took up his duties in 1839 he was already in delicate health, and suffered a breakdown three years before his death aged 47. His successor was the Rev Henry Browne.

However, he resigned in November, 1845. THe college closed temporarily for six months.

Between 1846 – 1886 there were a string of principals. However, between 1886-1898 the Rev Josiah Sanders Teulon was principal.

He had been connected with the college for over 25 years.

In 1889, he presided over the college’s jubilee but his years in charge saw a gradual

decline in student numbers. He resigned in 1899, which led to financial problems for the college as he retained his salary while serving as a canon.

THere were discussions about closing the college at this time but thanks to a convincing case being made by the vice-principal, the college continued.

In 1903, a hostel was purchased in West Street for £1,000. THese premises were predominantly paid for by the principal, in memory of his wife. THe premises were then refitted and refurbished and became the college headquarters.

By 1918, it was felt the premises in West Street were no longer adequate and it was sold in 1919 with the proceeds going towards the purchase of new headquarters in Westgate for £3,500.

THe premises in Westgate offered a large building with pleasant gardens, and included St Bartholomew’s Church which was used by the college for a while. THe college was formally rededicated by Bishop Ridgeway on May 1, 1919.

An army hut, previously used as a church of wounded soldiers in Brighton, was re-erected by the new headquarters to serve as a chapel.

By the early 1920s, the number of students had increased to 35 and the college acquired a three-year lease of a house opposite the college for use as a hostel.

During the Second World War, the college temporarily relocated to Cambridge, as many properties in Chichester were required by military authorities. At the end of war, all but one (Marriot House) were sold. THe college re-opened in Marriot House in October, 1946.

Students at the college were able to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious studies, a Bachelor of THeology degree and various certificates and training courses. THey could also take part in extra-curricular activities such as fundraising for charities.

THe college was closed in 1994 with the transfer of the THeological library going to the University of Chichester. In 1996, the Chichester THeological Trust was set up after the closure of the college, which supports activities that make a meaningful contribution to the life of the Church of England.

By 1918 it was felt the premises in West Street were no longer adequate and it was sold in 1919 with the proceeds going towards the purchase of new headquarters in Westgate for £3500.

Bognor RFC hunt four wins in a row PostSport after hitting Fordingbridge for six BOGNOR RFC all but sealed a top three finish in Hampshire Premier after dominating rivals Fordingbridge in front of a partisan crowd.

THe Purple and Greens started brightly against the visitors and never let up in securing a bonus point 39-13 victory.

THe five points puts an 11 point gap between Bognor in third and fourth-place Fordingbridge with just seven matches of the season remaining.

Next up for Billy Toone's side is a trip to midtable New Milton & District tomorrow where they will look to make it four wins in a row.

With a 12 point gap still separating Bognor from undefeated league leaders Basingstoke all focus will be on trying to chase down second-place Sandown & Shanklin, who are just a bonus point win ahead in the standings.

THe Purple and Greens will want to continue their tradition of fast starts, which they showed again against Fordingbridge at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Fly-half Dave Sweeney zipped the ball out wide to his pace men Dan Robinson and Sam Newcombe, the outside centre dotting down within 30 seconds of the whistle blowing. 5-0.

Bridge notched a penalty shortly after but

skipper Josh Burgess added to Bognor's lead shortly after.

But the visitors did not give up and scored a converted try and penalty before the break to take a 10-13 lead.

Into the second period, Bognor started to take control and prop Chris Webb scrambled over to restore their lead.

Further tries from Newcombe and speedster Josh Burnett sealed the victory and bonus point for the Purple and Greens before full back Dan Robinson wrapped up the scoring.

--Budding teen rugby players wanting to take the step up into the men's game are invited to attend the Bognor RFC Colts Academy training day.

DARTS: THe Sandy Carter Memorial mixed pairs knockout proved to be a family affair as mother and son Rachel and Adam Hall combined to great effect to lift the title.

In what has become the official halfway mark of the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League, the competition saw 27 pairs take part at the Newtown Social Club.

Form in the tournament did previous winners no favours with 2015 winners Mazz Tupper and Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) losing in the first round despite a 180 from the lattr.

THe reigning summer league champions, Hayley Gatford & Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares) also came up short, losing in round two.

Instead, it was Jill Mitchell (Newtown Clubbers) & Jamie Middleton (Aldwick Legion) who made it through to the final to face off against the Halls (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

THe final saw the Middleton go first by winning the bullseye. He also hit a 140 on his second throw giving his team the lead.

Adam Hall finally hit a ton allowing them to catch up, but both sides missed multiple doubles. Eventually, Hall hit double one for the first leg.

THe second leg saw Hall hit a ton to start the leg, and finally hit another at the end of the leg.

Rachel Hall hit 64 to leave a finish that Adam took out in three darts for the second leg, while their opponents were on a finish.

Leg three saw Middleton hit a ton, but 115 from Rachel Hall left her son with a chance at a 170 finish.

Unfortunately, he could only hit 98.

But on his next throw he stepped up to the challenge and only needed two darts to end the leg and seal the match by a winning margin of 3-0.

Both were clearly delighted when presented with the title of the 'Sandy Carter Memorial' Mixed Pairs Champions 2018/19.

Five try Chi on high ahead of week off

CHICHESTER RFC head into a week off on a high after chalking up a five try win over fellow strugglers Dartfordians.

Blues were clinical from the off in north Kent and racked up five tries in the convincing 21-42 victory.

Chi made the most of the conditions in the first half to jump out to a 30-7 lead at the half.

THen their cause was helped in the second half as ill-discipline cost the hosts as the referee reduced them to 14 with ten minutes remaining.

THe bonus point victory means Scott Ashley's side head into a week off ranked tenth out of 14 in the London One South.

With the eagerly-anticipated visit from leaders Brighton coming next weekend (February 9) the message to the players will be to rest and relax ahead of what will be a tough test for the Blues on home turf.

Chi had the kicking of fly half Henry Anscombe to thank for helping them to the win over third-bottom Dartfordians.

An early penalty got Blues on the board within six minutes. And despite the hosts replying with a try, it was one way traffic after that point.

First the Kent side had a man sin-binned.

THen Harry Seaman dived over for a score after a scrum. 7-10.

Further infringements provided two more penalties for Anscombe to kick. 7-16 and 10 minutes left in the half.

From the restart, Dartfordians infringed, providing Tom Blewitt the chance to wrong foot the defence and touch down in the corner. Converted for 7-23.

As the clock ran down, Toby Golds intercepted on the right wing and ran in Blues' third try. 7-30 and half time.

THe hosts hit back, partly helped by two yellows to Chi players, and with 70 minutes on the clock the score was 21-30.

But a red card for Dartfordians allowed Blues to kill off any hopes of a comeback with Sam Drayson and Seaman adding late tries.

YOUTH RUGBY: Chichester under14s produced a stunning second half fight back to seal victory over a strong Bournemouth side.

It what was a real roller-coaster of a contest, the visitors from Dorset stormed into a 5-28 lead at the half time break.

But Chi rallied and managed not only to recover but also overturn the deficit to eventually win 40-33.

Tries from Tom Heaver (2), Finlay West, Roscoe Hill, Will Osborne and Alex Spencer, along with a handful of conversions by Oscar Haywood and Charlie Manger, sealed the victory.

Coach Andrew Richardson described it as a "scintillating second half display which provided the spectators with a real heart-stopper".

He added: "Bournemouth played some excellent rugby, and both sides must be really proud of themselves."

Bognor's youth teams had a successful weekend, with the under 14s winning at Cranleigh and US Portsmouth.

THe under 16s continued their good run of form by defeating Cranleigh while the girls rounded off an excellent weekend with victory at Horsham (under 13s) and Crawley (under 11s).

Five star display as Tone Zone quartet romp home in Romsey

Backing for Lions bosses PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has given his full backing to joint managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen after a disappointing run of form put paid to the Lions' promotion hopes.

THe Nyetimber Lane side were well placed for an assault on the top two in the SCFL Premier after going undefeated for 16 matches.

But defeat to Eastbourne Town at the end of November triggered a run of just one win in 11 in all competitions, all but ending any hopes of promotion for the year.

With injuries and suspensions still hurting the Lions, Pagham have been forced to turn to youth.

And the starlets responded by smashing six past Loxwood last weekend with Harry Prisk (3), Liam Brady (2) and Howard Neighbour all scoring in the second half to seal a 6-0 home win over the Magpies.

THat will give everyone at the club renewed hope that they can push up the table form their current position of ninth.

Shea also believes the club can progress in the RUR Cup with AFC Uckfield and Peacehaven standing in the way of a place in the final.

And the chairman confirmed that Hellen and Simmonds will remain at the helm to rebuild for next season.

Shea said: "THey had a great year last year. Tom is a young manager and still learning but I have got 100 per cent belief in him. Richie is very experienced at this level and both work very well together.

"THat's not the chairman's dreaded vote of confidence.

"THere have been very fine margins this season with injuries and suspensions at key times which meant we went through a dreadful patch where we were struggling to raise a side at some points.

"THey have had it a lot harder this year and believe they will come it through."

Next up for the Lions is a trip to nearby Arundel tomorrow (3pm) THen on Tuesday it's the home RUR Cup quarter final against Uckfield (7.30pm) Shea said: "Arundel is always a tough place to go and they treat it like a derby game "To be fair, we owe them one as they came over to us earlier this season and we drew after doing everything but score. We should have battered them really."

BOGNOR'S Tone Zone running club have picked up where they left off, starting 2019 in style.

With more and more people of all abilities joining the cohort, members keep on chalking up good times at competitions in all corners of the globe.

Last weekend five Tone Zoners took on the off-road muddy five mile course in Romsey.

First home for the club was Gary Smith, in a speedy time of 41 minutes.

Just over a year after joining the club, Lisa Broad finished in her fastest time of 48 minutes. Rebecca Holden finished spot on the 50 minute mark, closely followed by Juliette Garrett and Jo Yorke.

Elsewhere, Grace Natoli, Derek Natoli, Lesley Ward and Sarah Spurr all jetted off to Gran Canaria, swapping freezing temperatures for some winter sun.

In the marathon, Grace ran a fine race to finish in 4 hours 52 minutes.

In the Half Marathon, Derek, Lesley and Sarah all finished under the 2.20 mark.

Derek was first to finish of the trio, in a time of 2.09. Lesley and Sarah came in at 2.16 and 2.18 respectively.

City will seek to extend the lead tomorrow when they welcome East Preston to Oaklands Park (3pm).

Rutherford's side head into the match full of confidence after a strong performance against a tough Bears side.

Even with the return of leading scorer Scott Jones and winger Gicu Iordache from suspension, along with a debut for Ryan Young in goal, it was the home side who took the lead.

Chi took until after the break to respond with Jones getting on the scoresheet with 20 minutes to go.

A draw looked certain until Clack popped up to seal the win and top spot for another week.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's charge on the top four continues after Blues made it a magnificent seven games unbeaten with a 2-0 win at Seaford last weekend.

Hurrell said: "We need to take them [games] one week a time. We know what to expect from Cov as we have played them twice already, both times down here where they have beaten us.

"It will be good to spoil the party just like they have done it to us twice already."

After falling behind to a debatable penalty, goals from Molly Clark, Lauren Cheshire, Rebecca Barron and a brace from Sara Tubby sealed the win against the Dons.

Blake: We should fear no one when we're on the front foot Next Game

TONBRIDGE (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS assistant Robbie Blake insists there's no other dressing room he'd rather be in when Bognor hit their stride.

THe former Portsmouth coach was speaking ahead of an important week for the Nyewood Lane side which sees the injury-hit side play two games in five days.

First is the visit of Tonbridge Angels, who defeated second-place Haringey at home last time out.

THen it's a midweek trip to fourth-place Merstham on Wednesday (7.45pm) as the fifth-placed Rocks looks to keep in playoff contention.

Despite having more than six first team players unavailable for a range of reasons, they head into the week full of confidence after an excellent second half performance sealed a 3-1 win at Corinthian Casuals last weekend.

And, speaking after that win to Rocks Radio, Blake said that the team have nothing to fear from the remaining three months of the campaign.

He said: "We have to be on the front foot and once we do that and play our football, we fear no one when we're on it.

"If we have the right attitude I wouldn't want to be in any other dressing room than ours."

It was very much a game of two halves at the Casuals' historic King George's Field.

A poor first 45 minutes saw Rocks go in at the break one down after an uncharacteristic error

from keeper Dan Lincoln allowed a long range effort from Hamilton Antonio into the net.

With manager Jack Pearce missing the match due to illness it was up to Blake to deliver the half time talk.

His words certainly had an impact with second half sub Tommy Scutt scoring with a tame header before Jimmy Muitt bagged a double to wrap up the win and take his personal tally to 27 goals for the season.

Blake said: "Apart from the horrible goal that we conceded, other than that I thought we ended the first half stronger. We regrouped and made a change and in the second half I think we were good value for the win."

Victory keeps Rocks fifth in the Bostik Premier just two points behind Lewes in third.

THings are tight, though, with a further two points separating Bognor from Worthing in tenth.

But Blake believes the positive attitude within the squad will stand Rocks in good stead as they move towards the business end of the season.

He said: "We have not got a bad lad, we have got people pulling in the right direction.

"Sometimes they will make mistakes but we are a really good team full of quality.

"When we are one nil down here which is a difficult place, for us to come back I must give credit to the lads. It shows a willingness to do well."

Three at the back here to stay?

IT'S a formation that was forced onto the Rocks rather than one adopted through choice.

But, after sealing a 3-1 away win at a combative Corinthian Casuals side, three at the back could be here to stay for the Nyewood Lane side.

With a number of players missing, assistant coach Robbie Blake opted to play Ed Sanders, Harvey Reed and Chad Field at the heart of the defence.

With Frenchman Richard Gilot playing a screening role that freed up the full backs to get forward and support Jimmy Wild and Jimmy Muitt who played up top.

Blake admitted that the formation only started to take shape in the second half with the switch of skipper Harvey Whyte to full back and introduction of Tommy Scutt for Josh McCormack, meaning Rocks started to get on the front foot.

Blake said: "As a coach or manager you may see decisions and have to make them with conviction.

"I thought at half time I had to make that switch by bringing Tommy on and pushing Harvey out wide and getting forward from there. THere's probably no one better than him coming from deep."

I'M writing this after an excellent away win at Corinthian Casuals.

THere's no hiding, it was a good result and a bit better than some of our trips away this season.

It's just nice to get back three points, especially given the squad that we had available to us. Despite those issues we still came away with the result.

With Mason injured and the Pompey boys not there, we had to think about how we would play and that meant a reshuffle with the formation.

Rather than going through Jimmy or Mason out on the flanks we had to flood the midfield and then get the full backs forward to give us the width.

Credit to Blakey for getting us to focus on that as it was not something we had worked on in training.

Some of you may be surprised by that but we all understand how Blakey wants to play and understand the principles that we need to get the ball wide whichever way we can, whether that's through wingers or full backs.

THe key is that once we have done that you still need to make runs to create space for other people.

It's about getting people into good positions. Due to personnel and people we had available, the full backs was the better option.

Macca (Josh McCormack) was one of those players but he came off at the break as he was shattered.

He had a couple of games in midweek so I think they started to catch up with him.

He's still young and perhaps needs to manage his workload a bit, but he has done well whenever he has played so he should be back tomorrow.

Another player who is settling in is Richard [Gilot] who's done well to be fair to him. He likes to get stuck in and is a good lad so it's good to have him back.

THat all helped get the win, which at 3-1 was probably a bit flattering.

To be fair, the first half was a weird one and if we had gone in drawing that would have been fair.

As many good saves Dan Lincoln has made his season (he made three worldies in the last week and a bit) even he will admit he had to save the first one.

But then in the second half we stepped it up a bit, we moved the ball a bit better and started to get Doug and me on the ball a bit higher and wider.

It helped, too, that the two Jimmys started doing well linking up and gaining possession when we played it up to them.

It may seem like a small thing but when the ball stays up there that does help as now the ball is not coming back so fast.

After that win we are now all looking forward to the next game at Tonbridge We did them over at the start of the season so they will be looking to get their own back.

THen we have a Wednesday trip to Merstham which will be tough as there are a few of us who could do with a rest.

It is what it is. Playing on a Wednesday is not something we do a lot but at least it gives us a break from training on Tuesday and THursday.

All we can do is keep on picking up points.

We would have been in a lot better position if we had tucked away Potters Bar. But if we keep going as best we can with a few wins and draws then we will be there or thereabouts.

No one is starting to break away at the top and Haringey and Dorking are not that far ahead so with a good string of results anyone can make a run at it.

It's no good thinking about games in advance as we have to deal with the next one, otherwise that's when you start slipping up.
