AN EVENT in Priory Park has been cancelled after a licensing objection was made by nearby residents.

THe Rum and Reggae Festival was due to take place tomorrow but organisers had to cancel the event on Monday.

Nearby residents have said that there

were incidents occurring outside the park after the recent Oktoberfest event.

Officers attended the scene in Priory Road at 10.28pm on Saturday, October 13, where there had been a confrontation between a group of people.

A 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman sustained injuries to their faces and heads and were taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, but discharged themselves before receiving treatment.

A 28-year-old man from Wick was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and later released under investigation.

A spokesperson for the Rum and Reggae Festival said: "Due to a licensing objection from nearby park residents, we have been forced to postpone the Rum and Reggae Festival in Priory Park, Chichester, which was due to take place this Saturday.

"We have contacted other venues to

Dangerous driver jailed after death

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE VAN driver who killed an elderly pedestrian in Chichester has been jailed.

Hunston resident Mr Raymond Stenning, 71, was on his way to feed the ducks in the village when he was struck

by Maciej Dywan's white Peugeot Boxer van which mounted the pavement.

Dywan, 40, of Sandringham Way, Bognor Regis, was sentenced to four years behind bars for the fatal crash.

His term was reduced from six years after he pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving.

His sentencing on Friday also saw him disqualified from driving for five years following his release.

After the sentencing, Mr Stenning's family issued a tribute to him.

THey said: "Ray was the most loving and caring husband, dad and grand-dad, who lived for his family.

"He was respected by everyone in the village and his death has had a massive impact not only on us as a family, but the whole community.

"On the day of the incident, Ray was walking a neighbour's dog which he did every day. He would then go down to the canal and watch the wildlife with his friends.

"Words cannot describe the traumatic way in which Ray passed away has affected us, and we all miss him deeply every day.

"THis all happened due to a van driver who was too impatient, and left the road and hit Ray, who was innocently walking on the pavement.

"Ray will always be in our hearts and loved forever, and deeply missed by all who knew him."

THe accident occurred on the B2145 Selsey Road, close to the junction with Orchardside, about 10.50am on March 1.

Mr Stenning was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious head and pelvic injuries. He died there from his injuries six days later with his family around him.

Dywan was later identified and charged.

In his police interview, he stated he had fallen asleep. But witness statements indicated he had been driving aggressively and had carried out a dangerous overtake immediately before he lost control and hit Mr Stenning because he was late getting home from a delivery.

Tony Crisp, of the Sussex Police serious collision investigation unit, warned drivers of the need to concentrate behind the wheel at all times.

"THis was a tragic case, where Dywan's level of driving fell far below the required standard," he said.

"A combination of fatigue and impatience led him to drive dangerously, resulting in the death of a much-loved local resident and family man.

"Driving requires the utmost concentration, and it is vital motorists don't drive while fatigued and allow themselves sufficient time to safely complete their journeys."

Electrical substation in city centre causes an explosion AN explosion in the Cattle Market car park in Market Road, Chichester, early on Wednesday evening, caused damage and major disruption to traffic.

Police and firefighters arrived at the scene and discovered damage to the wall of an electrical substation.

A cordon and road closures were put in place as a precaution and the incident was led by the electricity company SSE. No injuries were reported.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were

called to Market Road, Chichester, at 18.50pm yesterday evening (Wednesday) following a report of an explosion at an electrical substation.

Two engines were sent to the scene, and on arrival it was established the explosion had caused damage to a brick building approximately 15m by 7m in size.

THere was no further sign of fire on arrival. Crews worked with police and Southern Electric (SSE) to evacuate and cordon off the affected area.

Fire crews left just after 10.30pm after handing the incident over to SSE.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE NOVIUM Museum is inviting the local community to become part of a new headline exhibition by submitting their own photographs of the Chichester area.

Chichester Camera Club: A Celebration of People and Places will feature the rich history of Chichester Camera Club and its development over the years.

Drawing from the club’s archives, THe Novium Museum’s social history photography collection and contemporary work, this showcase will also explore the way in which the district has been a source of inspiration to club members across a range of photographic

genres.

THe wider district community is being called upon to become part of the exhibition by submitting their own digital photos for inclusion. Every three weeks, residents will be asked to respond to a different theme - people, place, natural world, and selfie.

Twenty of the best photographs from each category will be selected and displayed digitally within the exhibition.

THe community will also be able to take part in a monthly caption competition and other interactive elements.

THis year marks 125 years since THe Chichester Photographic Society was formed in 1893. It was active until 1945 and, after a four-year break, was re-formed in 1949 under the name of Chichester Camera Club.

It has continued as such to the present day, and is recognised as one of the most successful camera clubs in the country, welcoming everyone with an interest in photography.

Stephanie THorndyke, museum manager, said: “We are delighted to be presenting an exhibition that has been co-created with the wonderful photographers of Chichester Camera Club. We really look forward to embedding content from our district community within the exhibition and hope to inspire the next generation of local photographers.”

The city makes plans to remember - See page seven

A Chichester District Council spokesperson said: "If we receive objections against an application that remain unresolved, it must be heard by the licensing sub-committee.

"When the organiser approached us about the event, we raised concerns about their timescale and explained that if the application faced opposition that there would be insufficient time to hold a hearing to determine the application.

"We did receive objections and so unfortunately, there was not enough time to consider the application."

THe news comes following Chichester City Council's emergency meeting on Monday evening regarding plans for an ice rink in the park this month.

THe Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, called the meeting opposing the alcohol licence submitted for the ice rink.

THe agenda for the city council's extraordinary meeting originally contained two recommendations, but for legal reasons, Cllr Bell confirmed the first one, seeking an alternative location, was removed.

During the meeting, many councillors echoed Cllr Bell's concerns over the site and the alcohol licence. However, some councillors concluded that although they felt the hours to sell alcohol were long, they did not feel the need to object to it completely and therefore were unable to support the mayor's motion.

Cllr Clare Apel described the licensing hours as insane. She said: "Priory Park is not a suitable place for an ice rink. I think it is the most tactless thing to do. We have just had the most amazing commemoration of THe First World War and that park

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "THe money in order to pay for this, or make a profit on it is actually going to be made from concessions and the best way to do that is to sell alcohol. Isn’t that driving it the wrong way round? A family event doesn’t need alcohol. THe concessions, if they are selling alcohol will actually work against what the BID and the district council wanted, which is to drive people into the city, because they will stop there and drink alcohol.”

Cllr Les Hixson went against the mayor’s motion. He said: “I am very much in favour of this. I have taken the trouble to visit many other cities around Europe and in England and I have seen and witnessed the success of these events. THe average time families will go skating will be one to two hours maximum and they are not there to drink alcohol.”

Cllr Len Macey said there was no nightlife in Chichester. He said: “I can see both sides of the argument. THere is not much going on in Chichester with nightlife. So I would support this along those lines. I think it’s the right location, it’s in the city centre. What’s wrong with people having a glass of wine? What’s wrong with them having a pint? I’m looking at the bigger picture.”

Overall, a recorded vote showed ten councillors in favour and six objections, with one abstention and three absences. THe vote will mean a formal recommendation will be made to the district council, the licensing authority.

` Gunman arrested A MAN has been arrested after being seen in Chichester with what was believed to be a gun.

Police were called at 12.50pm on Monday, October 29, to Alexandra Road and a man was arrested in nearby Eastgate Square.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He remains in custody.

Chief Inspector Kris Ottery said: "We have officers out on patrol in Chichester and if anyone has any concerns please speak to us."

Any witnesses are asked to contact police online quoting serial 475 of 29/10.

` Portakabin fires WEST Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were called to a fire involving two Portakabins at a college near Avenue De Chartes at 5.34am on Monday.

THree engines were sent to the scene from Chichester, Bognor and East Wittering. On arrival, the Portakabins, used as storage and office space, were extinguished using two jets, a hydrant and two high pressure hose reels.

Crews also protected the fire from spreading to other areas.

Once extinguished, a damping down operation took place, and crews remained at the scene through the day.

Both Portakabins were 100 per cent destroyed by fire. Crews left at 17.28pm.

Council crack down on blue badge fraud

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER District Council is supporting West Sussex County Council’s efforts to crack down on Blue Badge fraud in the Chichester district.

An estimated one in five Blue Badges are misused, costing the UK economy £46 million each year. Misuse of Blue Badges can often cause problems for genuine users, leaving vulnerable people unable to get to their destination.

Blue Badges enable people with disabilities or health conditions affecting their mobility to park closer to their destination, such as in dedicated disabled parking bays on the street and in car parks, and in other permitted parking bays and on single or double yellow lines.

Blue Badges are a vital lifeline for users - without them, people with severe mobility difficulties would struggle to visit shops, access services, and visit friends and family.

As part of a crackdown of Blue Badge misuse across West Sussex, Chichester District Council’s civil enforcement officers are supporting the Blue Badge team at West Sussex County Council to tackle Blue Badge misuse in the area.

Trained investigators have been working with the council’s civil enforcement officers on special enforcement days to detect and retain Blue Badges which are being used fraudulently.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of the district

council, said: “Blue Badges are meant to help people who are disabled or have limited mobility, but fraud is a big problem which can mean that the people who need them the most suffer. By increasing the level of enforcement in the Chichester district, we hope to reduce the problem in our area.

“We understand that the Blue Badge scheme can sometimes be confusing for users so I would encourage anyone who is unsure of the rules to speak to the team at West Sussex County Council.”

THe county council has been working in partnership with the district council and other district and borough councils to enforce compliance of the Blue Badge scheme.

Across the county, there have been six successful prosecutions and 80 individuals have attended community resolutions. THese are offered as a firstlevel way of dealing with offences and are formal warnings in which people agree to attend an information session so the consequences of their actions can be explained.

Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Blue Badge misuse is not only fraud, but can mean that genuine, vulnerable users are deprived of vital services because parking spaces are taken by fraudsters. THis could include spaces near doctors’ surgeries, chemists or other community facilities."

f Friends of Centurion Way get spooked out

Spooky event to highlight the 'horrifying' plans to city's path FRIENDS of Centurion Way organised a pre-Halloween event on Saturday evening to raise awareness of threats to the path.

Plans include a possible diversion and downgrading of its southern end to make way for the new access road to the Whitehouse Farm development.

As dusk fell and pumpkins were lit up, there was a ghost story-telling corner for children, halloween treats, a hot drinks stand and speciality cakes. People gathered at the start of the Centurion Way by Bishop Luffa school, just where the old railway line up to Midhurst begins.

Chairman Ian Bartle said: "With the

exciting further plans just announced by the South Downs National Park to extend Centurion Way from West Dean right up to Cocking, we wanted to run a fun event to celebrate the start of the path here in Chichester.

"THe future could be so bright for this much-loved community asset if only its southern end can be preserved and enhanced as part of the new development.

"We have gathered many supporters so far, but need as many more people as possible to sign up now and lend their support."

Fang-tastic halloween fun for the family at museum

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SPOOKY treats were in store for those visiting Singleton over the half-term week with Halloween-themed fun.

Activities included the traditional fun of pumpkin carving, face painting and apple bobbing but there were also other crafty things to do.

Children had the chance to create a ‘floating ghost’, make a monster ring, create a paper pumpkin, make a string mummy and make a clay leaf dish.

Lisa Smith attended with her three children, Sammy, aged eight, Brian, six and three-year-old Natasha, from Chichester.

She said: "We often come here to get the kids outside and playing but also learning as well.

THere is always so much to do."

THere were also games and stories with playing a game of pumpkin noughts and crosses and a game of conkers and pumpkin hunts.

Marketing manager Jen Rudd said: "Hundreds of families are enjoying the autumn sunshine at the Weald & Downland Living

Museum this half-term.

"Our family-friendly halloween craft activities, face painting and pumpkin trail are proving very popular, and visitors love taking a wagon ride pulled by our shire horses."

Graham Silcocks and his wife Maryann had taken their grandchildren, five-yearold Beth and eight-year-old THomas, for the day.

He said: "We only live in Southampton but we've never been to the museum before.

"It's been a lovely day and there has been plenty to do for the children to keep them quiet and then take home bits they've made too."

New solar farm opens near city centre THE county council has powered up its second solar farm, which features the latest battery storage technology to maximise benefits.

Westhampnett solar farm, near Chichester, will generate enough clean electricity to power 2,400 homes for the next 25 years.

It’s a pioneering project that has been built on a closed landfill next to the A27. THe large batteries are used to store surplus electricity and release it to the grid when consumer energy demand peaks.

Westhampnett solar farm forms part of the county council’s long-term energy strategy to increase the amount of renewable energy generated and consumed in the county.

Tangmere solar farm, the first site completed by the county council in 2015, already generates enough clean energy for 1,500 homes and solar panels on council buildings, including offices, schools and fire stations, are producing clean energy and helping to reduce energy costs.

All the county council’s renewable energy projects are designed to pay back the full cost of installation over time and deliver an income.

County council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “I am delighted to see the completion of Westhampnett solar farm. Living in the sunniest county, it makes absolute sense for us to use our natural resources and to generate clean energy that can be fed in to the local electricity grid.

“As one of the first solar farms to be built with battery storage and free from government subsidy, we are blazing a trail among local authorities and demonstrating that councils have a role to play as local leaders on energy.”

With more solar farms and battery sites planned, the county council wants to supply more ‘locally-generated’ renewable energy to households through Your Energy Sussex, its council-backed energy supplier, which offers competitively-priced electricity and gas to customers.

Chichester City Council has organised significant events at the Litten Gardens War Memorial to help commemorate the exact 100 years since the Armistice.

Ten rounds will be fired on a First World War 18 pdr gun at 10.50am by the Garrison Artillery Volunteers in New Park Road. THis is to simulate the exact moment when the guns finally stopped firing.

THe gardens will also become the home of a specially commissioned chainsaw sculpture which will be unveiled during the service.

THe sculpture is carved from a Sussex oak tree and depicts a back to back soldier who returned from the war to take up a former occupation as a gardener. It takes inspiration from a Private Alfred Smith of the 4th Battalion THe Royal Sussex Regiment.

THere will also be the dedicating of a memorial stone to Lt Colonel Wilfrith Elstob VC DSO, MC of the Manchester Regiment who was killed in action in 1918.

THe Victorian Cross recipient was born in Chichester where his father was a vicar at Chichester Cathedral but his family moved away when Wilfrith was a few weeks old

THe city is also taking part in Battle's Over, which is a nationwide day of commemorative events marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. A thousand individual pipers across the United Kingdom and countries around the world commence the day’s commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle.

A lone piper provided by Leicester and Rutland RBL Pipe Band, welcomed to Chichester by the Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, will play at 6am in the morning at Chichester Cathedral.

"THere will also be special services earlier on Sunday morning in Portfield Cemetery and at the small memorial opposite the Bell Tower in West Street. I feel very privileged to be participating in these services as mayor in this particular year."

Road closures on the day will affect New Park Road, St Pancras, the Hornet and Market Road.

A COMMEMORATIVE event will be held next weekend to open the new community centre in Birdham.

THe Poppies on Parade concert is the first public event at the St James Community Centre in Birdham, which will be a fitting tribute to those killed and wounded in the 1914-18 War. THe concert, on Saturday, November 10, will be followed by a 1918-style tea party in the new centre, located next to Birdham Village Church.

Over ten years ago, the church congregation decided their single church room was no longer large enough to meet their needs and that they could provide the whole village and local area with a community centre for a number of social, health and cultural needs.

` New manager IRIS Stoltenberg, will bring her expertise in service and passion for food to the Farmer, Butcher, Chef restaurant at Goodwood as their new general manager.

As operations manager for Brasserie Blanc for over ten years, Iris was responsible for high standards of service across eight restaurants in southern England.

It’s this passion for food that has brought her to Goodwood. She said: “I was drawn to Goodwood by the ethos and approach to cooking here – the fact that the produce is home-grown just around the corner and ends up beautifully presented on the plate is a fantastic story.

Bra-illiant idea to donate to help women less fortunate

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CHICHESTER businesswoman is calling on women in the area to donate their unwanted bras to help women less fortunate.

Kay Mawers, owner of Clothkits, in Drapers Yard, started the campaign in October to collect the bras and display them including hanging them from the rafter by Drapers Yard entrance.

Many of the independent businesses in Drapers Yard have also joined in with Breast Cancer Awareness month by helping to raise funds.

Becky's Jewellery Boutique came up with the idea to support the cause and donated ten per cent of the sales of Rose Gold jewellery.

Sarah Newton, of DeMartino, offered 10 per cent off facial treatments and Katkins Flowers donated ten per cent of the sales of pink indoor flowering plants.

Lisa Sheridan, from Merry Go Round, baked pink cupcakes to purchase for a donation and Clothkits also donated ten per cent of all sewing machine sales on every Friday of the month of October.

Kay has said that all bras which are in good condition or barely used will be donated to charity, Smalls For All. She said: "I have not counted up how many we have got so far but we keep on getting bagfuls in! I guess maybe 3,000,

"My daughter, Grace, has a plan to upcycle the bras left over in poorer condition, and we will also call upon the creative Clothkits community around the world to get involved. In previous years we have sent out redundant pieces of fabric, and our Clothkits friends have been so inventive.

"I loved the Cardrona bra fence in New Zealand. THat was so inspiring, and gave me the idea. I think it is important for any business to get involved in community initiatives, fundraising etc."

THe Scottish charity collects and distributes underwear to help women and children in Africa. THey help those living in orphanages, slums, IDP camps and schools, as well as providing underwear to hospitals to help those suffering from medical

conditions like obstetric fistula.

Maria Macnamara, founder of Smalls for All, said: "We simply couldn’t do what we do without the help of amazing supporters like this.

"Living in the UK we have easy access to underwear and take it for granted, but in many more remote or poorer

parts of Africa, that’s far from the case. Underwear is a luxury that many people just can’t afford or it isn’t easily available.

"We really appreciate all the donations.

Giving pants and bras may seem like a small thing, but it can make a lifechanging difference."

The Phantom of the Opera makes ghostly appearance for Halloween

THe 78 exclusive guests who attended Goodwood's private party were treated to a Phantom of the Opera inspired evening on Halloween night.

THe Kennels is the central clubhouse for all of the estate's sporting members – be it horseracing, golf, motorsport,

aviation or health club enthusiasts.

Last month, the Phantom of the Opera requested company from members for the most haunting party of the year.

Organisers of the event brought the desire and passion of this operatic Broadway classic to THe Kennels with chefs putting on a phantom-inspired three-course meal for those wishing to dine.

After dinner, the party kicked off in theatrical style with music and dancing.

THe DJ was DJ Future Flex (Billy Reeves). Billy is THe

Kennels’ resident DJ and does the music for all the events.

THere was also a team of actors there who played the roles in the Broadway musical and brought THe Kennels to life.

` Starlight Trail CHILDREN in the city are being invited to take part in a special festive trail starting this month.

City's swap shop is a big success

Supporters of Transition Chichester's Swap Shop last Saturday brought in tents, sleeping bags, blankets, warm and waterproof clothing, walking boots and more.

It is hoped these items, which are much-needed as winter approaches, will be taken to France by volunteers in the coming weeks.

Among the helpers sorting the donations at the Newell Centre in Tozer Way was Lucy Wooding, who has firsthand experience of the camps, and

graduate Sophie Bennett, who hopes to get more involved with the refugee cause both here and abroad.

THe Swap Shop, which is held four times a year and is a free exchange of goods including books, clothing, homewares, toys, tools, fabric and garden items, was another success with many people going home happy with their finds.

Co-ordinator Sue Gilson said: "It is so gratifying to the team who work so hard on the day to make sure Swap Shop runs smoothly and is fun for all that we are not only able to encourage re-using and recycling in a big way, but also that we can use it as a collection point for those in need."

MP visits factory GILLIAN Keegan, Chichester’s MP, was shown around the Elekta factory, a leading innovator of equipment and software used to improve, prolong and save the lives of people with cancer and brain disorders.

Mrs Keegan visited the site last month to see their new radiotherapy machines, the MR-Linac. THis machine combines the high-resolution imaging and precision radiation therapy allowing treatment to be tailored to the needs of the patient and their cancer.

THis is only possible as the technology is able to see and track the target cancer cells, including changes in tumor position, shape and biology, while providing real-time information you need to respond immediately.

By 2025, the percentage of cancer patients needing radiotherapy as part of

their treatment will have risen from the current 50 per cent up to 60 per cent.

THe MP attended the factory to learn more about the best radiotherapy technology available as she has been campaigning to get a treatment centre at St Richard’s in Chichester. As part of this, the MP co-founded the All Party Parliamentary Group for Radiotherapy.

After the visit, Mrs Keegan said: "I love factory visits. THey take me back to where I started in a car factory in Liverpool.

"We saw the latest and greatest in cancer treatment technology. THese amazing MR-Linac machines make radiotherapy treatment more accurate and much quicker.

"I have been campaigning to get this technology at St Richard's in Chichester, so people don't have to travel long distances to get the treatment they need."

More women apprentices

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE NEXT intake of apprentices has started work at a specialised company in motorsport, aerospace and marine industries and there is a rise in the number of women.

Global Technologies Racing Limited (GTR) is a leading carbon composites manufacturer, based at Fontwell, with developing local talent at the forefront of its ethos.

GTR set up a training programme to ensure full training in the necessary skill sets was available to new members of staff and set them on their future careers.

Martin Meissel, general manager of Global Technologies Racing, said: "As GTR is a significant employer in the Arun district and being 100 miles away from 'motorsport valley' (the area around Northampton that holds most of the motorsport teams and composites supply chain), GTR actively seeks to develop local talent.

"THis way we are not competing for the same people as the other suppliers, and we are keeping a constant stream of new talent feeding into the pool.

"For the past couple of years, this has worked very well, and our training academy is becoming more well known in the area.

"As such, we are finding more and

more people approaching us regarding opportunities to join our programme, including more females.

"We have found that the women who have joined us so far have all had a real eye for detail, and this is particularly important considering the intricate hand-made parts we are commissioned for.

"THis is a breath of fresh air in a fairly male dominated manufacturing environment, and we are finding it really improves the workshop dynamics!

"Hopefully, this will continue, and the ratio will improve further – as it stands, the female work ethic is really pushing the pace.

"GTR is taking on a lot of highly complex composite work and being able to draw upon and develop a local talent pool is really good for the employment prospects in the area.

"Being able to offer manufacturing opportunities to women who would otherwise not consider it an option, and who then go on to excel in the environment, is something that we are extremely proud of."

New recruit, Alistair Howell, said: “THe composites industry is a rapidly growing sector of business and I am really proud and happy to be a part of the GTR team.”

Mimi Hopkins, another new recruit, said: “GTR is a great company and I am looking forward to the future and being a part of the team."

DONATIONS for air force personnel spending Christmas abroad are being sought by Bognor Regis well-wishers.

Cakes, tea, coffee, biscuits, books and magazines and Christmas decorations will be welcomed by members of the town's RAF Association branch by next Friday.

THat is the deadline for sending the items to Mali where the men and women of the RAF's 18B Squadron are based for the next few months.

Branch Chinook force liasion officer Mike Monk is organising the parcel collections. He said: "Where the service personnel are in Mali is not the best place to be at Christmas and we want to make it as pleasant as possible."

THe first delivery of electronic equipment was handed over by the branch's welfare officer, Sue Hull, to Sgt Jamie Donnelly, representing 18B Squadron.

It comprised ten 13W folding solar panel chargers, tablets, power packs, power banks, mini-power banks and lighting.

Sgt Donnelly said it would help the troops communicate at their base and on detachment.

Donations should be taken to the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square, Bognor Regis, from 11.30am-11pm daily, except 6.30pm on Sunday, by next Friday.

Kind-hearted Derek is named town angel GENEROUS Bognor Regis allotment holder Derek Baker has become the town's first Angel of the South.

Derek was presented with the new honour by the Bognor Community Gardeners in recognition of the free food he provides for a host of residents.

Derek cultivates two allotments in Hook Lane and gives away much of the produce he grows.

Carrots, peas, cauliflowers, leeks and brussel sprouts are among the healthy vegetables he provides to ensure those who struggle to pay for food can eat some nutritious food.

Derek, 64, said: "It's a bit of a shock and embarrassing to get this award. It's nice to be recognised for what I am doing.

"But I don't do it for recognition. I do it for the pleasure of helping people who can't afford proper food. It is nice to give people something decent to eat.

"It's very satisfying growing vegetables from the start. Planting the seed and watching it grow and is a good feeling.

"It also tastes ten times better than anything you buy in the shops."

THis year's scorching summer even enabled Derek, 64, to grow melons in the three greenhouses he has on his plots.

"I go down there every day for a couple of hours. It gives me something to do," said the former mental health services worker.

He distributes some of the food to people he knows need it. He takes other bagfuls are taken to Granddads Front Room Community Interest Company in

the High Street for it to pass on.

Derek said: "THe feedback I get is just fantastic. People say it's so nice to have such good food."

His certificate was awarded by the community gardeners' founder, Kim Davis, and their treasurer, Matt Stanley.

Kim said: "Derek's food is given out to whoever needs it in the community. We were having a chat about this the other day and we decided that Derek should be our first Angel of the South."

Matt said: "We wanted to give Derek some recognition for the good work he has done for growing food and distributing it to the people who need it the most. THank you for your work, Derek."

THe presentation took place at the first community day held by gardeners at the Sunken Garden in Bognor Regis town centre where they do most of their work.

Last week's popular event, inset right, saw them host the Forest Knights in the garden, located between the Hothamton car park and Waterloo Square.

THe free activities included toasting marshmallows, basic bushcraft, rope making, wood whittling and lavender bag making.

Matt said: "THe day has gone really well. We had 10 people waiting before we started and there have been about 70-80 people here in the first hour.

"THe weather has helped and it has brought the community into the garden, which is what we want.

"THe more people who come here the

better and events like this showcase the wonderful work the gardeners do.

"A lot of people don't know the gardens are here and we want to encourage them to come here more often."

Among the families who went along were Jenny Foster and her two children, Marnie Foster, five, and Linden Foster, two, and their friend, Poppy Field, five.

Jenny said: "THis is a lovely event. It's nice to have something to come to with the children which is free.

"It is also good to get the children outside doing something which is interesting to them.

"I do walk through the garden but I usually go to Hotham Park with them. But I might come here more now."

THe community gardeners hope to stage a series of activities. THe next will be a visit from Owls About Town on November 24.

Husband's appeal for Helen A BARNHAM man has appealed for his missing wife to get in touch - a year after she was last seen.

Ken Slaughter said he and their three sons desperately missed Helen Slaughter. THe last sighting of her was on CCTV leaving her home in the village around 6am on November 1, 2017.

Mr Slaughter said: "I keep hoping that Helen will get in touch. I keep hoping that Helen is OK and I just hope we are going to come home one day and find Helen is back home."

He said he had Christmas, birthday and Valentine cards and presents to give to Helen, aged 49.

"Helen loved her sons and she spent lots of time with them when they were younger...and she would spend time with them now.

"THe boys are really missing their mum and it's heartbreaking really," said Mr Slaughter.

"I would like to tell her we are all still at home,

all still love her and we wish she was back now."

Helen is 5ft 2ins tall, of small build, with brown short hair. She normally wears glasses.

She was last seen wearing dark jeans, a lightcoloured fleece and a woolly hat. She has small tattoos on both arms.

Inspector Ian Maloney, from Sussex Police's missing persons unit, said: "Helen's disappearance still remains out of character for her and we are desperate to hear from her.

"We are urging the public to continue to keep a look out for her and would ask everyone to cast their minds back to see if they remember Helen from the time of her disappearance.

"Did you notice Helen wandering the fields and wooded areas while out walking?

"Helen, if you are reading this we just want to know you are safe. Please get in touch with either us or our family."

Sightings of Helen should be given to 999.

` Walk for legal clinic A TEAM of walkers has tackled the THames to help the Chichester Law Clinic.

THe pedestrians with a purpose completed a 13.1-mile route along the watercourse in London on Saturday.

THey comprised volunteers and staff from Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice who stepped out on the bright but cold morning.

Luca Badioli, chief executive of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "We are passionate about making sure that less fortunate people are able to have access to justice.

"THat is why we want to make sure the service is continued, but without your support this service is likely to go."

THe help-point was set up six years ago largely thanks to Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, Chichester College and Sussex Legal Services.

It provides free legal help to people following cuts in legal aid.

All the funds raised by Citizens Advice on the walk, plus those raised by it at the Chichester Legal Walk, will go towards providing administrative support for the law clinic.

Popular centre praised by MP MP NICK GIBB used his latest visit to a Bognor Regis centre to learn about the start of social prescribing in the town.

Mr Gibb discussed the service at the Laburnum Centre which highlights the importance of mixing with other people to maintain good health.

THe centre, run by Age UK West Sussex, is working with GP surgeries around the town to encourage this approach for some of their patients.

Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "It's all too easy to become isolated in old age.

"But the evidence is now very clear that maintaining a busy social life is

a key component of living a healthy life.

"THe volunteers and members at the Laburnum Centre have a huge range of high quality activities at their disposal - from line dancing to computing, art to bingo, chiropody to hair salon, as well as a plethora of other classes and a restaurant. It's a lovely, friendly facility."

Mr Gibb watched a line dance class taking place during his time at the Lyon Street centre.

He also met its bingo group, saw its gym, hair salon and restaurant.

THe Laburnum Centre has 1,100 members and is open to people over the age of 50 for an annual membership fee of £65.

EDUCATION leaders from China have learned about education in this country.

THe 24 officials from the Beijing Xicheng District were given an extensive tour of Ormiston Six Villages Academy.

THey were particularly interested to find out how schools are managed in the UK. Paul Slaughter, principal of the academy, said: "We were thrilled to welcome the Chinese contingent of brilliant education leaders to Six Villages.

"We hope they learned a lot about what UK schools are like, and what

our fantastic academy specifically has to offer. THe visit was a great success and we've received positive feedback from the visitors and the University of Chichester.

"I would like to say a big thank you to our Year 9 students who proved to be excellent hosts and ambassadors for our academy."

THe visit to the academy, in Lime Avenue, was organised by the University of Chichester. During their time on site, the visitors were given a personal tour of the campus by employees and visited

lessons across all subject areas with Year 9 students.

THey also spent time with Mr Slaughter, who delivered a presentation, followed by interesting and productive talks with senior leaders like Naomi Sheldrake.

THe academy's visitors also had the chance to take part in a personal Q&A session with Mr Slaughter before they posed for a group photograph.

THe Chinese contingent spoke of how impressed they had been with the academy and presented a football shirt to Mr Slaughter as a thank you gift.

Stanton — the hard-leathered American actor who died recently at the ripe-old age of 91 — plays Lucky, a desert dweller who survives on a steady routine of diner visits, game shows and trips to his local bar. Director David Lynch has a supporting role in the film, a wonderfully laconic meditation on mortality, loneliness and spirituality.

While fresh fish is a key feature of the menu all year round, there is a further celebration of seaside specials on Friday evenings. Diners can enjoy fish and chips or moules frites with a glass of wine or a pint of local ale for just £10.95.

If the children have worked up an appetite skimming stones, then the kids' menu includes a varied choice of breakfasts and main courses just for them. Plus there’s warming hot chocolate and the fun Billy’s sundaes for those impervious to the cold, such as Double Doggy Doo Delight – a melting pot of chocolate ice cream, Maltesers, crushed flakes, chocolate sauce and cream.

THroughout the winter, the café hosts regular events, such as music nights, when musicians provide live entertainment on a Saturday evening, or its locals nights held every THursday, with a seasonal set menu.

You don’t have to be local to join in, just get yourself to Bracklesham Bay from 5.30pm on THursdays and you will be part of the Billy’s community.

Getting there is easy. THere is plenty of parking near the café, but if you want to enjoy a pint of two of local craft ale from Arundel’s Goldmark Brewery then the Number 52 bus stops just the other side of Beech Avenue in Bracklesham Lane – a few minutes’ walk to the cafe. From the centre of Chichester, the ride takes just 30 minutes.

Or when it’s low tide, you can walk all the way to Billy’s on the Beach along the coastline from East Wittering. THis 20-minute stroll will work up an appetite for the café’s famous breakfast.

So, there is no excuse for hibernating under the duvet this winter. Head to Bracklesham Bay for some invigorating sea air and then reward yourself with a warm Billy’s welcome.

Colour coordinate foods and seasons AUTUMN is here! THis time of year is so beautiful. For ages we seemed to be in the middle of what felt like a prolonged summer (which of course I am not complaining about at all) and is it, or is it not autumn yet?

Well, finally, I think we can safely say autumn is upon us. THe leaves are falling and on my commute this week it was four degrees at 7am. THe coats are on, gloves dusted off, scarves and hats at the ready and log fires burning.

Now is the perfect time to boost your natural immunity and give your body the best chance of defending yourself against some of those pesky change-of-season bugs that will soon be floating around – not to mention the dreaded cold and flu season.

Traditional Chinese medicine teaches the five-element theory where foods are inextricably linked to season, flavour, colour, and organ. Foods that reflect the season’s colours are most beneficial to our bodies during that time of the year. Autumn is a

is actually as important as exercising, so make sure you are allowing enough time in your day for both. Another great way to keep moving as it gets cooler is by utilising household chores like gardening, raking leaves, cleaning out wardrobes, and packing away your summer gear. Including these jobs into your everyday activities will keep you moving all autumn long.

Avoid comfort food binging. THe lead up to winter can be a bleak time for many dieters. Whether you’re trying to lose a few pounds or just trying to maintain a healthy weight, staying strong through the change of season is important. While the cold weather makes most of us want to reach for our favourite comfort foods, there are ways to curb your body’s urges.

Keeping up with a regular workout routine is the first. THe basic rules is if you’re eating more you need to be moving more. Secondly, try to avoid going to parties or functions hungry, too many food and drink choices are sure to foster overeating. Avoid that extra glass of your favourite tipple, alcohol can be warm and comforting but its also loaded with calories.

Treat your allergies. Allergies are also something that can trigger wheezing, lung issues and sinus aggravations this time of year, but try to be clear about what triggers you. THen it's easier to avoid, protect and address your issues more appropriately.

It can be dust, mould, damp air, coldness, animals, dry air with heating, and the list goes on.

However, do not despair as there are so many ways of treating yourself naturally.

Acupuncture, for instance, has emerged as one solution for what’s ailing you this autumn. THe World Health Organisation believes acupuncture can provide benefits to those suffering from acute sinusitis, acute rhinitis, cold, acute tonsillitis and bronchitis.

Reflexology is also useful in many health situations, as is homeopathy (always seek a registered professional).

Having aromatherapy oils burning in your house can also help protect you, such as peppermint oil and eucalyptus. THey can help ward off unwanted airborne viruses and keep your breathing pathways happy.

Foods, of course, are vital, because they can make the difference to your immune system. Avoiding too much dairy and wheat for example, could help improve sinus and chest congestion.

Try adding some daily fennel. Why? THis wonderful aromatic herb fennel contains good levels of phytoestrogens while also acting as a digestive carminative. If your digestion is working properly, you can guarantee your immune system will be working better.

Fennel may also help balance oestrogen levels while relieving IBS symptoms brought on potentially by anxiety or stress.

Fennel contains good amounts of fibre, potassium, folate and vitamin C as well as B6. It supports heart health by reducing the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Try a light salad with strips of fresh fennel or a cleansing Fennel soup - always make fresh from scratch.

Why include cauliflower? Although available all-year-round, cauliflower is at its best in the winter months. THe florets are great used raw in a salad or as part of a crudité selection served with dips.

Cauliflower contains antioxidants and phytonutrients that can protect against cancer, fibre that helps with satiety, weight loss and a healthy digestive tract, choline that is essential for learning and memory, as well as many other important health benefits.

Take it as red these are some of the best wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com THIS week three different red wines come under close scrutiny as I look at wines priced in the £10 to £15 bracket.

My first selection is that of an Estate Series Errazuriz 2016 Pinot Noir from the Aconcagua Valley in Chile, priced at circa ten readies.

Pinot Noir is a tad fickle as a grape variety and requires relatively high maintenance in the vineyard and, whilst Burgundy remains the heartland, several other regions are becoming well regarded as winemakers gain more experience, vines are of a greater age and a lighter touch in the winery leads to impressive results!

When young, Pinot Noir wines have red berry and fruit flavours, such as strawberry, cherry and raspberry and with ageing they grow more complex with bramble, mushroom and spice flavours forming.

Pinot Noir grapes are suited to cooler climates such as Oregon in the USA, Central Otago NZ, Mornington Peninsula (Australia), Santa Barbara (California)

and even coastal areas of Chile.

Height and ocean influences bring surrounding temperatures down and this Errazuriz Pinot Noir is from a familyowned winery from the cool climate Aconcagua Costa region near the Pacific shores where cool breezes and sunshine aplenty create fresh wines.

THe initial nose is almost asphyxiating - an olfactory sensation in fact - and this wine is soft and luscious, slightly earthy with a hint of wild herbs with subtle red fruits to the fore and latent spice.

Well-balanced and elegant, with ageing potential, this is proper Pinot Noir at an affordable price with soft tannins to boot and one well worth a try and available at Majestic Warehouses.

My second red is available from Asda stores for roughly fourteen pounds and is a Villa Maria Hawkes Bay 2016 Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Constituted of Bordeaux varietals Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the free draining alluvial Gimblett gravels allied to high sunshine hours provide the right terroir for these grapes and the mélange thereof combines the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon with the vibrant fruit of Merlot.

THis wine has a powerful nose and oozes juicy red cherry, dark plums plus hints of cedar and vanilla oak as well as an underlying tobacco character and a vestige of smoke.

Good length and a velvety texture allied to a slight bitterness akin to dark chocolate are also features of this good

wine and it is one which would pair ideally with roast lamb!

My final red selection is that of a 2015 Robert Oakley McLaren Vale Shiraz available from Hennings for circa thirteen pounds. Bob Oatley’s mantra is that all wines should be a darned good drink and it is he who founded

Cauliflower fritters with herby dipping sauce

serves: 4-6

Method

INGREDIENTS • 1 large cauliflower, cut into small florets • sunflower oil, for deep-frying FOR THE BATTER: • 85g plain flour • 1 tbsp cornflour • 125ml sparkling water • ½ tsp coriander seeds, ground FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE: • 1 large bunch of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • zest and juice 1 lemon • 1 tbsp small capers • 3 tbsp olive oil

pepper. Aeration for at least an hour is a must for this Mocha-rich Australian red with a hint of liquorice which would be a great accompaniment to grilled meats and is just what you expect of an Aussie Shiraz!

1. Whisk batter ingredients together, then let it rest while you make the dipping sauce. Mix sauce ingredients together and set aside. Cook cauliflower in boiling salted water for 2 mins, then drain and refresh with cold water.

2. Heat about 10cm depth vegetable oil in a highsided pan. Once oil is hot, test with a small bit of

bread – if it turns golden in 30 secs, it’s ready.

3. Dip the dry cauliflower into batter, shake off any excess and place in the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden, about 3 mins, then remove to a plate lined with kitchen paper.

To keep warm, keep the florets in a low oven. Once all the cauliflower is fried, season with sea salt and serve with the sauce.

serves: 6-8

INGREDIENTS • 1 large butternut squash, deseeded and cut into chunks • 2 tsp olive oil, plus a drizzle • 1 onion, finely chopped • 15 sage leaves, 6 finely chopped • 85g butter • 85g plain flour • 2 tsp English mustard powder • 1l semi-skimmed milk • 250g pack extra mature or mature cheddar, grated • 50g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), finely grated • 450g macaroni

Butternut squash & sage macaroni cheese

Method 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Toss two-thirds of the butternut squash with the olive oil and seasoning, and roast for 20 mins until nearly tender (it will finish cooking later). Chop the remaining squash coarsely, put in a heatproof bowl with 100ml water and cover with cling film. Microwave on High for 8-10 mins until tender. Drain and mash.

2. Fry the onion in a knob of butter until softened but not browned, about 5 mins. Stir in the chopped sage and cook for 1 min more, then add the remaining butter to melt. Stir in the flour and mustard powder, and cook for 1 min until it forms a paste. Gradually whisk in splashes of milk (you can add in bigger additions

as you go) until you have a smooth sauce. Bubble, stirring constantly, for 3-5 mins until thickened. Take off the heat and whisk in the mashed squash, 200g of the cheddar and half the Parmesan. Season to taste.

3. Cook the macaroni following pack instructions. Drain well, then stir into the sauce with the roasted squash.

Tip into a baking dish and scatter with the remaining cheese and sage leaves.

Can be made up to a day ahead at this point – cool and keep in the fridge. If freezing, don’t add the whole sage leaves.

4. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 again. Splash the sage leaves with oil and bake for 40 mins until bubbling and golden on top.

LIFE AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY Teresa Donald, 70, has enjoyed walking for as long as she can remember, so when her arthritic hip started to affect not only her ability to walk but her lifestyle, Teresa decided to speak to one of the UK’s leading Orthopaedic Consultants at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital and have a full hip replacement. Nine months after having a hip replacement, Teresa is delighted to share what life with her new hip is like and how post operation, she set herself the challenge of climbing the highest peak in Britain, which she did pain free.

I started to recognise I had arthritis when I was around 40 years old. Whilst the pain wasn’t too bad, it gradually got worse with time and eventually became unbearable.

I have always loved walking because it is a great way to keep fit and is also a big part of my social life since I am part of a walking group, where we all love exploring new destinations.

Before my operation, I never really let my arthritic hip impact my life because I refused to let it, however it was very hard to ignore when I wasn’t able to walk without limping. Although I knew I had the stamina and ability, I wasn’t sure if my body would be able to handle a whole walk, which was very frustrating and disheartening.

Another challenge I faced was using the bus. I found myself having to stand up a couple of minutes before my stop, just to make sure I could move when I needed to. Sometimes when I would try to stand, my body would freeze because of the pain I would feel.

Owing to this, I decided to make an appointment at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, with Mr Rao, who is a fantastic Orthopaedic Consultant. Any concerns I had about having a hip replacement, were quickly forgotten as

Mr Rao explained in a very clear way how straight forward the procedure was and the positive outcomes.

Following my initial appointment, I had my operation three weeks later.

Almost instantly after my procedure, most of the pain I had previously been suffering from had gone and I was able to leave the hospital very shortly afterwards. I even managed to complete a challenging 40 mile walk around the coast of Guernsey, three months later. Following this, I then accomplished the South Downs Way walk with a friend, which was 106 miles and took us nine days to complete.

An achievement I’m particularly proud of was walking up Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Britain. The walk was definitely one of my biggest challenges to date, however with my new hip I had a spring in my step the whole way up.

Before my hip replacement, all I can say is that I suffered from unnecessary pain.

However, now I no longer have to struggle and my quality of life is so much

better. I am very grateful to the Nuffield Health team for the service they provided and I definitely recommend this procedure to anyone who is experiencing unpleasant hip pain.

Community News & Views TWO DECADES of helping visually impaired people have seen a Bognor Regis-based charity's sight care advisors receive national recognition.

4Sight Vision Support's Mandy Whitman and Annie Taylor were put forward for the Life Changing Award at the Visionary Conference in Birmingham - a countrywide event that celebrates the work of sight loss charities in the UK. THeir nomination came as the service they provide in the Chichester and Southlands hospitals of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reached its 20th anniversary.

In that time, Mandy and Annie have made a huge difference to the lives more than 9,000 people with eyesight conditions.

Speaking about the award, senior sight care advisor Mandy, pictured below right with patient Mary Gullick, said: "It is very humbling to be nominated for an award like this and it really wouldn't have been possible without the close working relationship that we have had with the ophthalmologists and nursing staff at the eye clinics over the last 20 years.

"Our role is to support visually impaired patients coming through the clinics after they have been treated by the doctors.

"We do this by offering emotional support and direct practical help in the way of information advice and guidance at the time when each person needs it."

When it started in 1998, the sight care advisor service was ground-breaking. It has been replicated in many eye clinics across the country by other sight lose charities like the RNIB and has become a benchmark for service excellence because it is there to help the patients immediately after they have received a diagnosis.

Masoud Teimory, the chief ophthalmologist at St Richard's Hospital and Southlands, said: "4Sight advisors Mandy and Annie have been highly dedicated and are truly appreciated by the clinical staff. THey offer invaluable expertise to patients..."

EDUCATION watchdogs have again awarded Chichester College the highest approval for its residential service.

Ofsted has awarded an 'outstanding' grade to the provision for the fourth time in a row.

THe latest report, issued last month, says the accommodation for 69 students in the Woodlands and Westgate halls of residence at the campus as well as the 46 with families in the area is the best.

THe inspectors, Jennie Christopher and Paul Taylor, stated: "Students make exceptional progress educationally, socially and emotionally through access to a multi-disciplinary team which provides bespoke wrap around support.

"Residential students thrive at the college. THey mature and learn essential life skills, making them ready for employment or higher education."

Reacting to the report, Andrew Green, executive director at the college, said its accommodation manager, Kate Stenning, and her team had played a large role in achieving the grade.

"THe report is a credit to the whole team at Chichester and really reflects how our staff place students at the heart of all that we do. It is down to their hard work and determination that we can offer all of our students such outstanding support and care," he said.

THe inspection took place over two days and looked at the experience and progress of young people at the college.

THe inspectors met staff and students, as well as their families where possible.

THey also observed staff working with young people, reviewed all paperwork and toured facilities. Ofsted has to inspect the facilities every three years.

MORE than 80 delegates from a range of groups around Bognor Regis and Chichester attended a fair to find out more about funding, pictured above.

THe event was held by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester and saw a host of representatives of community groups in the area, charities and community interest groups take the chance to discover potential sources of support for their work.

Jenny Holmes, VAAC's senior admin and communications worker, said: "THe town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, opened the fair by welcoming the delegates and highlighting the fantastic support that voluntary groups give to a range of needs in the community.

"He acknowledged the difficulties in funding and encouraged groups to seek out the funders present and ask them for their financial help."

More than 20 members and friends of Bognor Regis Rotary Club took part in the walk. THey raised ÂŁ275 for the annual appeal.

Mrs Holmes said the groups who went along were pleased with the information they were able to gain.

VAAC will be following up with organisations to find out if their fundraising efforts have been a success as a result of the fair.

It was backed by Sussex Community Foundation, Arun Local Strategic Partnership and the University of Chichester.

Sir, Middleton-on-Sea Parish Council refers to the article in the Bognor Regis Post (October 19) in which Arun District Council's planning policy team leader (Kevin Owen) is quoted as telling councillors that 'Middleton are going to review their neighbourhood plan but are proposing alternative targets'.

If the article is accurate, then Middleton Parish Council is extremely disappointed that Mr Owen has got his facts wrong. THe parish council has never had a neighbourhood plan and currently has no intention of producing such a document.

THe district council's adopted local plan covering 2011-2031 has a housing requirement of 20,000 new homes to be built throughout the district. Arun is now in the process of trying to allocate at least 1,250 additional homes between the parishes in order to comply with housing requirements made by the planning inspector.

THe first figures seen by this council show Bognor Regis having to take 300 houses while Middleton and Littlehampton have to take 200 each. THe requirement for Middleton is completely out of all proportion with its existing population and number of dwellings and fails to reflect local housing developments which have occurred in past years.

THe reality is that all available land along the coastal strip has been developed in Middleton and Elmer and that the only available land is in north Middleton abutting the A259 which has severe building limitations and which is all owned by West Sussex County Council.

Arun needs to be cognisant of, and allow for, these limitations which include: * Traffic-related issues at Comet Corner, both for Middleton and Yapton * Rural local roads, especially Yapton Road and Ancton Lane, where significant and regular flooding occurs * A major infrastructure deficit with no schools or youth facilities in the parish and the only medical centre at capacity Additionally, all the agricultural land to the east of Yapton Road falls within the Middleton/Climping strategic gap and should not be developed. THis was confirmed by the planning inspector, Mark Dakeyne.

Notwithstanding the comments above, Middleton-on-Sea Parish Council does wish to act constructively with Arun in helping them reach their local plan shortfall, while recognising the many constraints within the parish. Mr Owen has been advised by the parish council's chairman, Cllr Shirley Haywood, and vicechairman, Cllr David Allsopp, that an absolute maximum number of 150 new homes is all that could be considered achievable.

A DANCE Fit Class revived the eighties to help Chichester Stroke Club.

THe session raised funds for the club as well as providing those who took part, pictured above, with the chance to enjoy the music from that decade, boost their health and have fun.

A spokesman for the club said it was grateful to all those who took part.

"THis was an 80s-themed dance workout masterclass enabling those attending to learn upbeat routines, burn calories and improve their fitness, while rasing funds for the local stroke club," he said.

THe event was staged at Goodwood Health Club. Its staff helped to support the stroke club's chairman, Jackie Palmer, stage it.

THe sponsorship money is still being collected and will go towards the 33-year-old stroke club continuing its work.

"Chichester Stroke Club is a unique facility providing aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors and respite for carers and partners. THe club is run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers. We are currently looking for more volunteers to help at our meetings," the spokesman added.

Chichester airmen of the First World War

By Pat Saunders, volunteer and Amanda Rogan, learning officer at the Novium Museum THROUGHOUT November, to commemorate the end of the First World War, we will examine the experiences and sacrifice made by so many local men who served in the armed forces throughout the conflict.

THe Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was formed in April, 1912, as the military began to recognise the potential for aircraft to assist with information gathering. It was in this role that the RFC went to war in 1914 to undertake reconnaissance and artillery observation.

Shortly before the war, a separate Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) was also established, splitting off from the RFC. THe mortality rate for pilots during the First World War was extremely high as they struggled with technology that was still being developed and in the early stages of use.

THere are a few men named on Chichester’s War Memorial who served in the RFC during the First World War. Corporal William Hayden had been an apprentice carpenter for Messrs J O Holt & sons. After joining the RFC, he was stationed at Shoreham for a short time. He was killed, aged 21, during a training accident at the docks

in Montrose, Scotland in September, 1915.

He’d been there for two months preparing and training for when the time came for him to go to war in Europe. His parents received a telegram from their son’s commanding officer informing them of the accident.

Captain Robert John Lillywhite had previously served in the Royal Navy before being discharged on medical grounds.

Despite this, he pursued an interest in aviation. After qualifying for his pilot’s licence, he worked as an instructor before enlisting in the RFC in 1914. He served for ten months in Egypt then he was transferred to France. Early in 1916, when alighting from his aeroplane in France, he was run over by a motor car causing him to be badly bruised and shaken. He returned to England on leave for three months to recuperate. On November 26, 1916, he was killed in a flying accident in Yorkshire. He was 23.

In 1918, the RNAS and the RFC were merged, forming the Royal Air Force (RAF). THe new organisation was governed by the British Government Air Ministry. By November, 1918, the RAF had nearly 300,000 officers and

airmen, and more than 22,000 aircraft.

On April 7, 1918, just a week after the formation of the RAF, two aircraft collided in mid-air over the flying station at Tangmere, which had been established in 1917 as a training base for the RFC. One pilot involved in the accident, Captain Norman Herbert England, was found alive after the crash but died while being transferred to Graylingwell Hospital for treatment. THe other two pilots, Second Lieutenant Clifford Hackman and Second Lieutenant Victor Craigie, died instantly. THis kind of incident, unfortunately, was not unusual during the First World War and more than half of RAF fatalities occurred in training.

Air mechanic 1st Class John Edward Shirley of the RAF worked at an aircraft construction station, in Pulham, Norfolk. Pulham was one

of the UK's first main airship stations at this time, opening in 1916 and employing 3,000 servicemen and 2,000 civilians. John Edward Shirley died in July, 1918, aged 39. He is buried in Chichester Cemetery.

Private 2nd Class George Howlett of the RAF died, aged 21, on September 11, 1918, at Cambridge Hospital. He is buried in the churchyard at All Saints Church in Portfield.

After the war ended, a deadly outbreak of influenza caused more deaths and casualties.

Private First Class Archibald Cosens had served in the RAF throughout the war. He died at home in Chichester in February, 1919.

He is buried in Chichester Cemetery.

Relay for Life Committee Member – Cancer Research UK Relay for Life is an overnight community event that celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those lost and rallies everyone to fight back so we can bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Each relay is a community-led, non-athletic event where teams set up camp and take it in turns to walk around a track for up to 24 hours to signify that ‘cancer never sleeps’. These events are only made possible thanks to the dedication and skills of brilliant volunteers, and they’re looking for more amazing people to join the team. They need your passion and skills as part of a committee that will plan, organise and promote a Relay for Life event uniting your community in the fight against cancer.

Youth Support Worker/Volunteer – Chichester Bell Tower Drop-in Centre Volunteers are required to go on rota once every week/ every 2 weeks to attend the Chichester Bell Tower Dropin sessions; activities might include engaging with young people via conversation/gaming/help with homework, serving snacks and keeping the area tidy. You must be

over-18, have good communication skills (particularly with young people) and willing to have a DBS check done. You will be required to volunteer for 2 to 4 hours (sessions are split into 2 hour slots) a week/every 2 weeks.

Shop Assistant – Radio Respect CIC Radio Respect CIC offers mental health support and information, and also offers the community as a whole the opportunity to promote their activities and fundraising events. They need volunteers to help in their shop selling vinyl records, tapes, speakers, players and other retro items. Tasks will include operating the till and chatting with customers. They are looking for someone who is easy going, responsible, mature, and good with people.

Assistant Poppy Appeal Organiser for Bognor Regis – Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal supports service personnel, veterans and their families. Volunteers are needed to assist with organising the Poppy Appeal in the Bognor Regis area by helping to plan the collection activity, preparation of the Poppy Appeal sales material, and placing and collecting the Poppy boxes from

businesses and other sites in the Bognor Regis area.

Tasks will include: working as part of a team, meeting regularly to plan activities, and visiting local businesses/ shops/supermarkets to persuade them to hold a Poppy donation box. You will need to be physically able to lift and carry boxes of poppies and money boxes, able to drive and have access to a vehicle, and able to man collection points.

Sales Assistant – Stonepillow Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable individuals to make positive changes in their lives. They have a large retail warehouse and a high street charity shop; selling predominantly furniture, white goods and electrical products, run with the assistance of clients and other volunteers. All necessary induction and training will be provided. They are very flexible and welcome any volunteers who are happy to devote as little as one morning or afternoon, or they can fit your volunteering around your other commitments (i.e. childcare) so you would be able to come to help us i.e. 10-2. They are open 7 days a week and any help is hugely appreciated!

Struggling Blues look to turn back PostSport the clock and start winning again CHICHESTER RFC's director of rugby, Paul Colley, believes an end to the club's poor start is just around the corner despite the struggles rolling on.

With more than a quarter of the season now gone, Blues sit second bottom of the London One South having won just one of their eight games.

THe latest defeat came at the weekend when a spirited showing on the road in Essex saw Chi fall just short in a 32-31 loss to THurrock.

With London Cornish due to visit Oaklands Park tomorrow (2pm), hopes are high that Chi can finally put an end to their early-season struggles.

Speaking after the latest defeat, Colley said: “THurrock look a decent side and knew how to play these conditions and the circumstances well.

"We are obviously disappointed and I think we did deserve to nick it, but you have to concentrate throughout the game.

"However, this performance was a step forward and everyone at Chichester knows that a really good performance is close."

Key to the better performance in Essex was the return of Sam Drayson and Dane Gingell

to the front row and Martin O`Callaghan and Jon Lindsay to the second row, giving the front five a much more solid look about them.

After falling behind early, Harry Seaman replied with a converted try before Chris Johnson dived over to make it 12-5. Centre Sam Renwick then picked a good line to cross again before the break to put Chi 19-5 up.

Into the second period, Blues belied the strong wind and Johnson crossed again to seal the bonus point try.

But the home side rallied and scored three times to take a 27-26 lead.

A further five pointer followed as Chi were reduced to 14 for an infringement.

But they made the final few minutes interesting as Sam Drayson hammered over to make it 32-31.

Next up is London Cornish, who will pose a similar strong challenge. It will also be a reminder of how far Chi have fallen in the last year.

In 2017, they were flying high, challenging at the other end of the table. But the 43-23 loss to Cornish at home saw them lose touch with the top two.

Water-way to finish a Venice marathon!

TONE ZONE runner Alice Slater was running on water as she completed an international marathon with a difference.

THe Bognor Regis-based runner was among thousands of runners to flock to the Italian city of Venice to run 26 miles in a city renowned for being built on stilts.

But torrential downpours had seen the normally tranquil streets and awe-inspiring bridges flooded - forcing participants, including the elite field, to splash their way to the finish line in St Mark's Square.

Alice took the ankle-deep water in her stride though, splashing her way through the final two miles to finish in 5 hours 31 minutes.

THere were better conditions closer to home when a number of Tone Zone runners took part in the Beachy Head marathon.

THe race, which starts in Eastbourne, is known as one of the toughest around, being off road and very hilly.

Nature, too, had some impact on this race, with a large crack in the cliff forcing the route

to be diverted slightly.

THe Tone Zone cohort of Michael Manwill, Cheryl Laing, Sam Yates and Wendy Cannon all performed well though.

In his third marathon this year Manwill finished in a very good time of 4:23.

Laing, who doesn’t seem to stop with marathons, finished just under the six hour mark. Yates and Cannon helped each other round the course both finishing in 7:10.

Also running on the South Coast was Joan Woolley, who took part in the Brighton & Hove Albion Stadium Marathon, which was also the first held at a Premier League ground.

Woolley crossed the line in 6:17 Midweek saw Chris Gallagher get in the halloween spirit at the Ghostober 5 Miles of Terror race near Portsmouth. He shrugged off the terrors and flew through to take second place overall with a time of 35:49.

Tony Hancock continued his fine running this year as he ran the Jersey Spartan Autumn 10k this weekend in a time of 45:16.

RUGBY: Bognor RFC will be looking to bounce back in style after slipping to just their second defeat of the season.

THe Purple and Greens returned pointless from their long trip to the Isle of Wight as they fell to a 36-19 defeat to Sandown & Shanklin last weekend.

With Bognor now sitting in fourth, five points behind second-place Sandown, they will be out to avenge the loss at home to Portsmouth IIs at Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (TBC).

Sandown was always going to be a tough place to visit, even with a fullstrength side.

But a string of injuries in the forwards meant Bognor were struggling to pull a side together for the clash so the defeat did not come as a big surprise.

After falling 17-3 behind, tries from Josh Burgess and Dan Robinson saw them take back two scores across the Solent with them.

Coach Scott Barlow, while being delighted with the positive attitude showed by his weakened side, will be hoping several of his senior players will regain their fitness over the next few weeks to enable Bognor to have a strong run-in to Christmas.

In-form Chi prepare for royal visit with two wins from two

Falcons soar to league win CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club ended their regular season on a high coming away as Solent League Division 2 champions.

With a 10 & 3 record and having beaten all but one of the Division 1 teams, the Falcons pipped Southampton Spitfires to the top spot by two points to take the title and promotion to Division 1 for the 2019 season.

Falcons manager David Morris said: "THe team have worked so hard all season at practice, and they should be proud of themselves for this long-awaited achievement."

"THey hit more runs than any other team in the entire league, let alone our division, and conceded less runs than everybody else, too.

"We’re also seeing our older juniors now graduating into the seniors squad and setting a great standard.

"THis is a pattern I’d like to continue and push even harder with next year.

"We’ll have to compete at a higher level more regularly in Division 1 but we have nothing to fear and I’m looking forward to the challenge!"

To add to their success, two Falcons received prestigious trophies at the Solent League

end-of-season awards ceremony. Outfielder Hettie McNeil was presented with the Division 2 Female MVP trophy for her consistent outstanding performance on the field – this was voted for by opposing captains and game umpires.

David Morris was inducted into the Solent League’s Hall of Fame for his services to softball and baseball, sharing the honour with Southsea Sharks' Ed Wakeman, who tragically lost his life in June.

THis year has seen huge growth in the younger age groups at the Falcons organisation.

Junior fastpitch team continues to flourish and a new little league baseball club for 7-10 year-olds ran on Sunday mornings in Oaklands Park through the summer.

THe seniors section has also expanded to include a fastpitch softball team.

After cutting their teeth at Chichester’s own fastpitch tournament, they headed to Paris in September to compete in the annual Tournoi de Fleur.

THe Falcons’ next priority is to form a second team to enter the league and tournaments.

CHICHESTER City warmed up for their return to the FA Vase in style, winning two from two in the last week.

Miles Rutherford's side welcome Hellenic Premier outfit Windsor to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) for the second round match in the national knockout competition.

After making it to the last 16, City will be looking for a positive result against a side from the royal borough who are mid-table and play in a lurid green, red and white Union Jack kit.

Chi will follow that match up with a trip to SCFL Division One side Hailsham Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.30pm).

City ensured they had perfect preparations for the Vase by defeating Crawley Down Gatwick at home last weekend.

THe 3-0 victory, which extended their lead at the top of SCFL Premier to four points, came courtesy of the returning Josh Clack, Matt Axell and Samuel Ndlovu.

For Clack it was a special day as he made his return to football after nine months out due to a spell in prison.

THat was followed up by a 3-0 win against Steyning Town in the RUR Cup on Tuesday.

Ladies could go top with win CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith admits his side are in a 'fantastic position' as they sit second with back-to-back home games to come.

THe Oaklands Park side are now just one point behind Coventry United at the summit of the National South after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cardiff City last weekend.

Midfielder Molly Clark, fresh from being nominated for the world beach soccer player of the year, bagged her seventh goal of the season to seal the victory.

THe Walton Lane side turn to the division two cup tomorrow when they welcome Brighton Electricity to Walton Lane tomorrow (1.30pm). Bosham beat the league newcomers 3-1 just a fortnight ago, with Ryan Coombes (2) and Patrick Bulbeck scoring.

Unbeaten Lions are hungry for Vase run PAGHAM will face a familiar foe as they look to make strides in the FA Vase.

Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side welcome fellow SCFL Premier side Peacehaven & Telscombe to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

With the Lions still unbeaten in the league after three months of football, they will be firm favourites to win and make it through to the third round of the national knockout competition.

Chairman Tony Shea has always been clear that he wants the club to go as far as they can in every competition they enter.

While the club has lifted a number of county cups in recent seasons, an extended run in the FA Vase has so far eluded the Lions.

But, with Pagham sitting third, five places above tomorrow's opponents, the odds will be very much stacked in their favour.

THe same can be said for the Sussex Senior Cup second round match against local rivals Selsey on Tuesday (7.30pm) when a division will separate the sides.

Lions will also be full of confidence after defeating second-place Horsham YMCA at home last weekend.

In what was a tight game, Pagham goalkeeper James Binfield pulled off a series of fine saves before George Gaskin's late strike sealed the 1-0 win.

Bognor boss is not worried as winless streak extends to five Next Game

LEATHERHEAD (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says he is unworried about the Rocks' recent run of five games.

THe streak of three draws and two defeats has put a slight dampener on what has been a bright start to life back in the Isthmian Premier for the Nyewood Lane side.

Two of those matches came in the last week, as Bognor took two matches and a penalty shootout to overcome Isthmian One South Central side Bracknell Town in the FA Trophy.

THeir reward is a trip to Southern League South side Walton Casuals next week (November 10) in the next round of the national knockout competition.

Before then, Bognor return to league action, heading to struggling Leatherhead tomorrow (3pm), and then hosting SCFL Division One side Seaford Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But, despite the poor run, the Rocks boss said he was happy with the performances that his young side continued to produce.

Pearce said: "In both games we should have comfortably put the game to bed, there's no doubt about that. But our finishing is not great at the moment and we are not defending very well. But between the two penalty areas we are ever so pleased with the lads.

"THey are trying to do what me and Robbie ask, which means we are creating chances but, unfortunately, we are struggling to

convert a good percentage of those."

Rocks highlighted their wasteful nature in front of goal during the two matches against Bracknell.

While their opponents took their chances, Bognor spurned plenty and had to rely on a late Brad Lethbridge goal to seal a 2-2 draw in the first encounter.

In the replay, Rocks fought from two down with Calvin Davies and a late Jimmy Wild effort levelling things up. It was then over to Dan Lincoln to save three penalties to secure a 3-2 win on spot kicks.

If there was a bright spot, it was the performance of Mason Walsh who took the man of the match award during the replay.

Pearce said: "Mason is a very exciting player. He does the hardest part of going past defenders ever so well but I still think there's improvement he can make in terms of the final thing he does, whether that's a cross, shot or pass."

Next for the fifth-placed Rocks is a trip to third-bottom Leatherhead to face a side who have struggled for goals more than Bognor in recent weeks - with their tally of eight the lowest in the division.

Pearce said: "THey will be as good as Bracknell so it will not be easy. It will be difficult game. Our problem is making sure we have a fit first team squad available. If we do, then we will be very confident."

Injury list is worry for Pearce ROCKS fans thought they had used up all of their bad luck last season.

A mixture of a range of injuries, failure to secure signings and lack of goals meant that Bognor dropped out of the National South.

Fast forward a few months and it seems one of those issues is starting to creep back on manager Jack Pearce - with half the first team squad struggling with knocks.

Defenders Keaton Wood, Corey Heath and Joe Dandy, along with forwards Dan Smith and Jimmy Wild have all missed games in recent weeks.

Skipper Harvey Wild is set to join the quintet on the treatment table after the Bracknell matches while Jimmy Muitt and Chad Field are also nursing injuries.

With more than half of the squad struggling, Pearce said that much of the focus would be making sure there were enough players available for tomorrow's match against Leatherhead.

THe veteran manager revealed that this might mean dipping into the transfer market.

He said: "Given where we are, it looks like I will have to sign a few this week to keep us going. Quite where they come from I'm not sure yet but we will see where we end up."

WE MAY not have won a match for a little while but it's not all doom and gloom down at the Nye Camp.

Taking into account the number of injuries we have at present, I am impressed by our team's performances in recent games.

Corey, Keaton and Joe Dandy are all out at the back while I think it's quite obvious that we have missed the killer instinct of Dan Smith playing as striker.

Still there's lots to be positive about - we are still fifth in the league and, thanks to great resilience, remain in the FA Trophy.

We have shown great character to come back against Bracknell Town home and away in what is the premier knockout competition for non-league clubs.

I have to say the Robins provided a tough test for our young side in both games.

At Larges Lane, we went behind fairly early but got an equaliser through a neat Jimmy Muitt goal after a chipped pass by Calvin Davies.

We all know Bognor can play the passing game but many of our goals actually come from direct passes.

Not quite route one football but that final ball over the top or a chipped pass from midfield can sometimes pay off.

But we let another goal in from a defensive error which meant we were 2-1 down at half time.

For me, after all of those chances in the first half and not taking them, I felt we would go on to lose the game.

But the team showed real guile and, in the end, Bradley Lethbridge’s super strike after turning inside the box right at the end was fantastic to see and this gave us a chance in the replay back at Nyewood Lane.

It was very much the same story in the replay but this time Rocks went behind 2-0 early on.

Bracknell started brightly but I thought we came back at them and created at least five chances one on one with goalkeeper, Mark Scott, who was outstanding across the two matches.

Davies netted on 37 minutes, giving us hope in the second half. He has divided opinion, but on 69 minutes on came substitute Jimmy Wild to bundle in on 88 minutes to take it to extra time. Lovely stuff!

We created more chances in the 30 minutes of extra time but failed to take them as Bracknell looked tired in the latter stages.

And so it came to the dreaded penalties.

I feared for us to win it as their goalkeeper was playing so well.

But, in the end, we won it 3-2 as Muitt, Doug Tuck and Mason Walsh converted their spot kicks confidently, whereas Bracknell missed their first two penalties and managed to score only two.

Relief was my overriding emotion following this win.

Fair play to Bracknell who will feel they should have beat us back at their place but in cup football you just never can be certain what is going to happen.

Next up in the FA Trophy will see Rocks travel to Walton Casuals on Saturday, November 10.

I am looking forward to that one and hope that by then we will have some players back fit!

But its back to league action tomorrow as we head to Leatherhead at their Fetcham Grove ground.

Situated by the River Mole in Surrey, this game will be another not to miss!

THe Tanners are currently in the relegation zone with just nine points but have plenty of games in hand.

THey like to play passing football like us so it will be nice to get a win there!
