Meeting call to discuss ice rink

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN EMERGENCY meeting has been called by Chichester City Council regarding proposed plans for an ice rink in Priory Park.

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, councillors debated the plans at a Chichester District Council planning

committee meeting on Wednesday, October 17.

THe vote was tied with the chairman of the committee, Cllr Bob Hayes, making the casting vote in favour of the ice rink.

Now, Chichester Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, has called for an extraordinary meeting of the city council to be held on Monday evening to take another look at the idea.

At a meeting held by the city council's

planning delegation sub-committee on October 10, there was no objection raised to the planning application for the ice rink based on the facts before them.

However, as there is now a proposal to serve alcohol, there is concern over greater evening use and additional noise disturbance.

Speaking to the Chichester Post, expressing strictly his personal views,

Cllr Bell said: "I am all for an ice rink in Chichester but it has to be in the right place.

"It is my personal view that an ice rink in operation for six weeks in Priory Park is simply the wrong place. "i just don't understand the location and why somewhere such as Oaklands Park has not been chosen instead."

THe news comes despite Mike Ashley's Sport's Direct purchasing the chain for £90m in August.

In a statement given to THe Chichester Post, a spokesman for House of Fraser said: "We have suggested various options to the landlord that would have enabled us to save the store in Chichester.

"Sadly, these have been declined. We are now in consultation with staff about the fact that the store faces closure in the new year."

Staff members of the branch in West Street were told in a meeting on Friday that they would lose their jobs on February 4, 2019, with the store closing on January 27.

Sussex Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ana Christie said: "THe announcement of the closure of the House of Fraser store in Chichester will be a shock to the community and all the employees.

"Retail stores are closing up and down the country, impacting local communities, jobs and tourism. THe survival of traditional British high street stores and restaurants are being impacted by e-commerce giants such as Amazon, who provide convenience and ease.

"However, despite the increase in online shopping, retail stores can survive.

Work is needed to find innovative ways to keep the high street a thriving place to do business, attract visitors and bring

together local communities."

Cllr Richard Plowman, from Chichester City Council, said: "Whether you are a city or not is often defined by whether you have a cathedral or have a national brand department store. House of Fraser going, despite all the talk of how resilient Chichester is, strikes a massive blow to the retailing offer in Chichester.

"Why was House of Fraser closed in Chichester while the Huddersfield branch was kept opened suggests that maybe the cost of rents, rates and availability of car parking were factors in the decision.

"So what will happen? THe building is listed so the façade won’t change much and of course it is in a conservation area. Developers at the moment seem to be obsessed with making money from residential accommodation and given the prime location, opposite the cathedral, expect the top floors to be highly unaffordable luxury apartments. We may have one or two shops still on the ground floor and I expect yet another restaurant or coffee house.

"THere is need for more hotel accommodation but developers find it hard to make money out of small hotels at a development cost of £125,000 per room. We had a excellent hotel next door, the Dolphin and Anchor, and that closed as there was no car parking for hotel guests.

"BID and the local county and district councils have sadly let us down failing to support the independent retailers and letting the city become shabby through lack of money spent on the pavements and any lack of co-ordination of the streetscape."

Apprenticeship fair held in city

AN APPRENTICE will share her experience of taking a first step in her career at an apprenticeship fair in Chichester next week.

THe event is open to anyone interested in learning more about apprenticeships and the range of opportunities currently available to all ages and education levels.

Speaking ahead of the event, Billie Ellacott, an apprentice adult support worker at West Sussex County Council, said: “I had finished my BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in outdoor adventure at college and I knew university wasn’t for me. I was looking for what my next step would be and saw the vacancy for this apprenticeship.

“Being able to learn in a hands-on environment really appealed to me and I applied without hesitation. It’s only been a few months and I’m loving it.”

THe fair, run jointly by West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council, is a chance to meet the apprentice employers and training providers attending and find out about current vacancies.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: “We are very pleased to be involved with this event. Apprenticeships are a valuable way for people to get into work and offer great career opportunities. Over the years we have had several apprentices here at the district council, and all have done extremely well with many finding permanent jobs with us.”

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CYCLISTS put on their helmets and jumped on their bikes to cycle up to 52 miles for this year’s Pedal for Paws South event.

THe cycling event took place across the stunning South Downs last month to raise vital funds for assistance dog charity Canine Partners.

THe charity trains assistance dogs to transform the lives of people living with disabilities across the UK, boosting their confidence and independence.

More than 50 cyclists took part in the event and although the funds raised are still being counted, Helen Watkinson, head of community and national fundraising, hoped the challenge will have raised £5,000, enough to purchase and train a puppy.

“Events like Pedal for Paws are so important for us to raise funds and awareness of Canine Partners in the area surrounding our Southern Training Centre near Midhurst,” said Helen.

“Existing and new supporters are able to take part in the exciting challenge and experience the incredible views of the South Downs while raising vital funds for the charity.”

SAP UK Ltd, a corporate supporter of Canine Partners, took the cycling event as an opportunity to put together their own team of 18 people of all ages and capabilities.

Amanda Gardiner, pre-sales manager at SAP UK Ltd, said: “After running a half marathon earlier this year and personally raising £890, I decided my next challenge would be to get my fellow SAP UK Ltd colleagues to join a team to raise more awareness and money for Canine Partners."

At the district council's planing meeting last week, councillors had also expressed concern over the location. Nearby residents had claimed the recent Oktoberfest, held on Saturday, October 20, had caused disturbance in the area.

THe ice rink would be operational from November 24 until January 6, 2019. However, works to provide the rink and ancillary structures would commence early-mid-November, 2018, and the rink dismantling would take place between January 7 and January 13, 2019.

A licensing application has submitted for the retail sale of alcohol and recorded music from Monday to THursday, between 10am and 8.30pm, and Friday to Sunday, between 9am and 10pm.

THe application also states the retail sale of alcohol, recorded and live music and late-night refreshment on Christmas Eve between 9am and 11.30pm and New Year's Eve from 9am to 1am.

Cllr Bell continued: "My second big concern is the alcohol licence. Ice skating and alcohol do not mix. I have three grandchildren in Chichester and I am in great support of having an ice

"It wouldn't matter if the location was somewhere else as people would not go on into the town after as everything would be there. It is undermining existing businesses and places like THe Park Tavern, THe George and the Dragon are all nearby and will be affected.

"If this is allowed to go ahead I think it's a case of shooting oneself in the foot."

THe agenda for the city council's extraordinary meeting states: "In the light of the additional information about the alcohol licence that was not before the city council when a recommendation was made on the planning application, the city council now strongly urges the district council to examine and alternative location for the ice rink.

"Should the district council decide to proceed with the ice rink in Priory Park, the daily operating hours of the ice rink should reflect this being a facility in use predominately by families and young people and the promoter should not therefore be issued with a licence to retail alcohol inside the rink or adjacent to the rink."

` Student assaulted THREE boys have been arrested after a student was assaulted in Chichester.

At 1.42pm on Tuesday, October 16, police were called to Avenue de Chartres where a 17-year-old boy had been assaulted between the skate park and Chichester College.

THe boy had suffered cuts and bruises to his face after being attacked by a group of boys and was treated in hospital.

PC Tom Van Der Wee said: "We believe about six boys were involved in this unprovoked attack and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened.

"THis was a busy road at a busy time of day and we believe a number of people witnessed the assault."

Flood prevention is a big success

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COMMUNITY action has been the driving force behind a major flood diversion project for the hamlet of Almodington.

Birdham and Earnley Flood Prevention Group recently completed the scheme, with excess storm water diverted across Batchmere Road, linking up with farm ditches that drain to the sea at Medmerry Nature Reserve.

THe project was funded through £52,500 from the county council’s Operation Watershed scheme, £15,000 from the Environment Agency and was actively supported by Earnley Parish Council. Residents and local landowners also provided detailed knowledge of the local topography and water flows.

Flood prevention group chairman Robert Carey said: “A number of residents’ homes were flooded during the major floods in June, 2012, but, by taking flood water away from the village, this project will significantly reduce the risk of this happening again.

“THe local community are grateful for the funding and expert support from Operation Watershed and the Environment Agency. It’s been a lot of work for all concerned but in the end well worth it.”

Roger Elkins, county council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “THis is a real community success story, with multi-agency support. I’m

delighted we have been able to help through Operation Watershed funding and expert advice.”

Debbie Kennard, county council cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, said: “THis has been about the local community making this happen through sheer persistence and determination and everyone involved should feel rightly proud of their success.”

An unusual feature of the flood diversion project is that Earnley Parish Council has signed a wayleave agreement with a large local landowner - a legal agreement which, in return for permitting the diversion of flood water, has committed the parish council to maintain the new drainage works in perpetuity.

f Fishbourne residents will have their say

Survey for Fishbourne residents for new village home proposals PEOPLE living in Fishbourne are being asked for their views on proposals which could see hundreds more homes built in the village.

A survey, compiled by a community group set up by the parish council, is being distributed to every home in Fishbourne, so everyone has an opportunity to have their say.

Fishbourne Parish Council chairman Geoff Hand said: "Fishbourne is being asked to find land to deliver a significantly increased number of houses. THe new homes are in addition to the ones included in our existing Neighbourhood Plan, which have already been built.

"It feels as though we are being punished for our positive approach to house building up to now.

"THe parish council is particularly

concerned that all or part of Bethwines Farm, on the western edge of the village, could be included in a list of possible sites.

"THis could lead to up to 1,000 houses being built on prime agricultural land.

THe fight is on, and this survey is the first skirmish."

THe survey is an effort to find out the priorities of residents regarding local infrastructure requirements and their views on where additional housing in Fishbourne should be built in the future.

As well as being delivered to each home, copies will be available online and at the Fishbourne Centre, and other locations around the village including schools and pubs.

Completed surveys should be returned by October 31.

New ideas for city's big project

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP opposing the Southern Gateway plans has introduced ideas around a new masterplan.

THe Gateway+ team was formed around a year ago to bring a more radical vision to the masterplan put forward

by Chichester District Council for the Southern Gateway project.

Over £180 million is being spent on regenerating 30 acres of largely brownfield land and creating more than 1,000 jobs at the southern entrance to the city.

Areas include the bus station and depot, Basin Road car park, law courts, the former Chichester police station playing field, the old Chichester High School buildings and Royal Mail depot buildings.

Gateway+ has been absorbing feedback from the discussions and consultations which have taken place with many organisations and individuals in Chichester to create a focused plan for THe Forum.

It has been described by the Gateway+ team as a 'truly iconic building' set on the south side of a major new public square fronting onto South Street and the Avenue de Chatres.

THe group also believes both existing level crossings should be closed, with the existing Stockbridge Road crossing closing and the Basin Road one being replaced by a bridge underpass.

From discussions with Network Rail, the group says it is understood they are considering enlarging the station

to accommodate four platforms to significantly improve services.

THe Forum has been designed as a centrepiece and will be 34,000 square feet. It has been described by Gateway+ as 'highly flexible, sub-divisible space at street level with further smaller break out spaces and people servicing above' and 'an iconic building and environment of which the city can be justifiably proud'.

THe building would be accessed from a glass walled atrium providing an internal extension of the outside public square.

THe Forum would include a highquality hotel, a mix of residential and workspace accommodation and associated retail and leisure facilities.

THere could also be room for a multitude of large and small events, conferences, exhibitions and entertainment.

THe Southern Gateway project will turn the 30-acre site near the canal into a vibrant and attractive new quarter featuring an estimated 365 new homes and 20,600 square metres of new commercial space.

Earlier this month, councillors approved the next major steps for the project at a cabinet meeting. Members agreed to go out to tender to find a development partner and approved the development brief, a detailed document outlining all the objectives which developers will need to meet as part of the process.

THe process of finding a development partner will take six months and the council anticipates announcing its selection in June, 2019.

THe next stage will be for the development partner to develop their

ideas and show them to the public next summer.

Chichester District Council leader Cllr Tony Dignum said: "THe district council approved a Masterplan for the Southern Gateway in November, 2017, and at its meeting on October 2, 2018, approved the development brief prepared in conformity with the Masterplan. In due course the brief will be published and bids invited.

"On September 27, with CDC executive director, Paul Over, I met the Gateway+ promoters, including Geoff THorpe, to receive a presentation of their latest proposals. THey were invited to submit their own bid when the invitation to submit bids is published.

"You will understand that, given the proposed bid process, CDC cannot comment on the Gateway Plus proposals at this time."

` Police reports DURING the week of Monday, October 8, to Sunday, October 14, 24 reports of vehicle crime were reported in the Chichester area.

Locations included Downs Road, West Stoke, West Stoke car park, Main Road, Chidham, Eartham Wood car park, Plainwood Close, Chichester and Shopwyke Road, Chichester.

A number of other crimes were also committed.

On Monday, October 8, in Itchenor Green, Itchenor, an insecure property was entered and a handbag stolen. Serial 0044 08/10.

In Woodmancote Lane, Hambrook, on Wednesday, October 10, police received a report of a burglary. Items relating to the business were stolen. Serial 1363 10/10.

On THursday, October 11, in Kathleen Gardens, Chichester, a burglary was reported. Entry was via the conservatory door. No valuables were taken. Serial 1365 11/10.

In Pyers Croft, Compton, on Friday, October 12, a burglary took place at a property. A number of personal possessions were taken.

Serial 1088 12/10 On Sunday, October 14, in Prinsted Lane, Prinsted, a property was entered via a window but nothing was taken. Serial 0573 14/10.

In Woolbeding Lane, Midhurst, the same day, a vehicle was broken into. Nothing was stolen. Serial 0347 14/10.

THe team, who are currently placed fourth in the Sussex County Women's and Girls Football league, is formed of 15 girls from around the Chichester area with their home ground based within Chichester College.

Charity cards for Christmas

Cllr Bell was joined by charity representatives Asha Park, from Brent Lodge, Mark, from Multiple Sclerosis Trust, Di Levantine, from Sussex Snowdrop Trust and shop managers Helen and Anna and regional manager Judith O’Sullivan to start the 2018 season.

THe Cards for Good Causes Charity Christmas card shop is in THe Council House in North Street and now open from Monday to Saturday between 9.30am and 4.30pm until December 17.

THis year the pop-up shop is very pleased to be stocking cards from a few new charities including Brent Lodge bringing a selection of animal-themed Christmas cards plus Lepra and Military Wives Choirs.

Staffed by a team of local volunteers, the Chichester pop-up shop is part of a network of more than 300 temporary shops run by Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest charity Christmas card organisation. It represents 28 national charities, including Cancer Research UK, Barnardo’s, NSPCC, Alzheimer’s Society and RNLI. Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of different Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers.

Judith O’Sullivan, regional manager for Cards for Good Causes, said: “Buying charity Christmas cards is one of the simplest ways to support good causes this festive season and we stock one of the widest ranges of Christmas cards anywhere. THe proceeds from every card or product sold make a vital contribution to the work of the charities that we partner."

In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which the charities pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT.

City MP tries her hand at some bricklaying at Chichester college CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan tried her hand at bricklaying at Chichester College on Friday.

She was visiting the campus during Colleges Week, part of the ‘Love Our Colleges’ national campaign that celebrates the positive impact of colleges on their local communities.

Mrs Keegan took a look around the dedicated construction unit, meeting bricklaying students and even having a go herself, as she helped to build a pier training model after some guidance from lecturer Neil Redman and second year student Jake Hinkins.

Neil said: “Bricklaying is a real skill and is a vital part of the construction trade industry. We recommend trainee bricklayers would spend two years at college, studying at level 1 and 2 to learn the trade, before moving into an apprenticeship programme.

“It’s not every day that an MP comes into the workshop and asks to have a go, but Gillian did all right – she

placed the brick well but I think she found it trickier than she thought it would be, especially controlling the mortar. With a bit of training, she was also able to practice the technique of levelling.”

Mrs Keegan was impressed at what she saw. She said: “It has been wonderful to come and spend time at Chichester College. I went to a further education (FE) college myself, from 16-18, and it was a life-changing experience for me.

“It is great to see the work that is taking place here in Chichester, along with the high standards of facilities and teaching. It is a bit different to when I was at college!

“Colleges offer essential educational opportunities to many people, from all walks of life – giving an alternative route through education and into employment. I certainly couldn’t have done what I have without my college education.”

` Duke is new patron THE 11th Duke of Richmond and Gordon is to be the new patron of Sussex Community Foundation His late father founded the Sussex Community Foundation in 2006.

Since then, the Foundation has given over £13 million in grants to smaller charities and community groups across Sussex and is building an endowment, currently worth £17million, which will provide sustainable funding for Sussex for years to come.

Football fans head to city to see Portsmouth players

Fans of the beautiful game had the chance to chat to the EFL League One stars at Covers in Quarry Lane.

Covers Timber and Builders Merchant are the official sponsors on the back of the players' shirts and held the event for halfterm to allow fans to meet Ben THompson, Louis Dennis and Tom Naylor.

Assistant store manager Demetrios Langford said: "It's been a fantastic event and a brilliant day. As sponsors of the football team, it's great to organise this.

"It's been a great chance for people to see them and meet them and it's been really positive. All the kids have really loved it. THe players have been really good. We've had a mixture of kids, families and adults coming down and the players have chatted to them, had photos taken, autographed tops and signed goods."

Ben THomspon is currently on loan from Millwill and central midfielder and centre-back, Tom Naylor, joined Portsmouth on a three-year deal after he turned down interest from other League One clubs and a new contract at Burton.

Louis Dennis recently joined Portsmouth on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal.

Both Ben and Tom were part of the line-up for Portsmouth when they beat

Fleetwood at home on Saturday.

Tom said: "It's been lovely meeting fans and having time with them, especially those that come every week. It's really nice to be able to give something back.

Louis, who is originally from London and living near Chichester, is enjoying his time in the south. He said: "I really like it down here. THere's lots of nice people and

Full steam ahead with Lion's 24th anniversary model railway event

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TRAIN ENTHUSIASTS of all ages visited the Chichester Lions Club’s 24th annual model railway exhibition.

THe event was held at Chichester High School in Kingsham Road on Saturday and was officially opened by the deputy mayor of Chichester, Cllr Trevor Tupper.

Twenty-three railway layouts in scales from N-gauge (smallest) to 16mm (largest) formed the nucleus of the show.

On five of these the public were enjoying driving the trains.

THese were supported by a detailed rural landscape next to a railway and three stands of magnificent working Meccano models.

Chichester Model Engineers showed static models of “bigger trains” and there was even a chance to ride an outdoor train.

Colin Bull, one of the founders of the Solent Meccano Club, which started in 1976, had a stand.

He said: "Our club started when one of the chaps put an advert in a Meccano magazine asking about forming a club. A few of us got together one night in a pub

and started from there and we now have around 70 members.

"THere is not so many young people joining nowadays. It used to be more juniors than older people. It's a shame because young people coming to these sorts of events like looking at it and show interest.

"I started when I was about five years old and I have never looked back really."

Colin's proudest build was a nine foot model of the Laxey Wheel. THe Laxey Wheel (also known as Lady Isabella) is built into the hillside above the village of Laxey in the Isle of Man. It is the largest working waterwheel in the world.

He said: "I built it in 2016. I have basically won nearly every award going in the Meccano world for it!"

Five trade stands were on the site, selling a wide range of models, equipment, modelling tools and books to provide modellers with all the essentials they need.

Toovey’s Auctioneers’ specialist toy auctioneer/valuer, Mr Chris Gale, was also on hand and arranged to sell any toys that the owner agreed.

Children were entertained through the day with games including an 'I-Spy on the Layouts' competition, and 'Pick-a-

Winning-Station' from a familiar railway network.

Helen Wren, from Fishbourne, attended with her three sons, 13-yearold Sam, eight-year-old Joseph and THomas, aged six.

She said: "THis is our first time here. We have a 00 Gauge Hornby set at home and Sam is keen to get a layout set up.

"It is all ready at home so we are just here to get some ideas really. It's a lovely event, it's right on our doorstep and it's good value for money."

Sam said: "I really enjoy the train sets.

It's probably the fact that you can create stuff. I am really into Lego as well as I love building things and you can do whatever you want.

"At home, I have got a few buildings, a turntable and five engines."

Surgery is one route, but first and foremost, we always look to maintain the existing joint where possible. One of my patients has been coming to see me for 10 years as I’ve been able to preserve their joint without yet having to pursue surgery as an option.

For those that do require an operation, it’s important to understand that having a replacement joint is not the end of their mobility, but rather it’s the beginning of their restoration back to health.

Many of the patients I see have always enjoyed active lifestyles and are keen to get back to doing what they love as soon as possible. People are more physical that previous generations and it’s our job as consultants to keep facilitating this.

We use tried and tested implants to ensure our replacements stand the test of time. We’re confident that our patients can expect to see their new hip last for more than 20 years and material science is improving all the time.

Recognising that people come in all different shapes and sizes is also very important. One shape of hip implant will not fit all, so looking at a patient’s anatomy, bones and what they’re hoping to achieve from the operation are all factors we consider when selecting a new joint. In some cases, custom made prosthesis can be produced.

Hip replacements tend to be performed in older adults, but ages can vary greatly. The youngest patient we’ve seen was a 17 year old who required surgery due to childhood hip problems and the oldest to date was 101.

In terms of recovery, the positive news is that with desire, motivation and a tailored physiotherapy programme, most people will return to their normal activities within just a few months. I get great job satisfaction from seeing patients get their lives back, whether this be returning to top level sport or just walking their dog again.

` New head teacher MS YASMIN MASKATIYA is leaving Chichester High School in December to take on a national role.

Ms Maskatiya has decided to leave her role to become one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools, a role that will enable her to influence educational standards nationally.

A spokesperson for the school said: "We are immensely grateful for the transformational and inspirational contribution that Ms Maskatiya has made at the high school. She led the girls’ school to outstanding and ensured the smooth and successful merger of the two high schools."

Mrs Joanne McKeown has, following a selection process, been appointed as full-time, permanent headteacher of the school.

In her current role as head of school, Mrs McKeown, as well as having day-to-day responsibility for leading the school, has had substantial experience acting as headteacher.

Mike Jupp - A Life In Pieces will be the one and only exhibition devoted to the art and designs of the award-winning cartoonist, illustrator and writer from Bognor Regis.

He is mostly associated with his incredibly detailed jigsaw puzzles, especially the I Love... collection, pictured inset, which is an international best-selling series for Gibson Games.

His exhibition will open at the gallery in East Street next Tuesday and last until November 4.

Mike said: "I've never had an exhibition. I just wanted a chance to let folks know that I didn't spend all my life in a pub.

"My stuff is for real people. It doesn't need to be explained. You can tell which way up it's supposed to be, and it doesn't need analysing by 'experts'.

"With my serious head on, I'd like to think that I'd be eligible to join the ranks of the great British cartoon illustrators such as Giles, THelwell, Lawson Wood and Donald McGill."

A graduate of the West Sussex College of Art in Worthing, and its first student of animation, Mike's initial career was in advertising, publishing, film and TV. He lived and worked in California as an animation art director and scriptwriter on a variety of European and American cartoon series.

After his return to Bognor Regis, he was helped by legendary film director George Lucas, to have his children's story, THe Dreamstone, made into an ambitious TV cartoon series.

It was broadcast by ITV for 52 halfhour episodes over four series in the 1990s. It was followed on ITV by another of his creations, Bimble's Bucket, for 26 half-hour shows.

A chance to see THe Dreamstone, as well as art from his TV and publishing career and original paintings of his jigsaw puzzles, will all be on show in the exhibition. His work for a recent bid to recreate THe Wombles will be on show.

THe exhibition will be followed by an auction of the original puzzle artwork on November 8 at Henry Adams auction house in Chichester.

` Probus club PROVIDING fellowship was seen as the core aim of Chichester Probus Club at its latest meeting.

THis was agreed by its meetings after a wide-ranging and useful discussion chaired by president David Childs Hopkins.

Giving support to members with illness and those who had suffered bereavement were also viewed as important roles among the club's 60 members.

Press officer Des Evans said: "THe club went on to discuss practical matters, including the need to spread the administrative load among members, and to encourage new members to 'shadow' those with demanding duties.

"It was also felt important to undertake succession planning, say for the president's and secretary's roles, so as to ensure a smooth continuity."

THe club's next meeting will take place on November 8 at the Park Hotel in Chichester. Prospective members should contact Barry Brooks on 01243 262444.

A LANDMARK seafront hotel in Bognor Regis has been sold.

THe Royal Hotel, on THe Esplanade, was bought last week. It was up for sale for well over a year.

THe building has planning permission to be fully converted into 18 luxury flats.

THe Royal Hotel was built in 1888 and is a three-storey building with cast iron balconies and rails at the bottom of its window cills.

Tim Peake sends a message to reunion

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ASTRONAUT and former Chichester High School for Boys pupil, Tim Peake, sent a special message to former students on Saturday.

Major Tim Peake sent over the video for the CHSB 90 event - celebrating the foundation in 1928 of Chichester High School for Boys.

In his message, Tim said: "I'd like to welcome you to today's celebrations of 90 years since the foundation of Chichester High School for Boys in 1928.

"I have so many great memories of my time as a student. I loved studying science but perhaps the strongest influence on my future career was being a member of the school's combined cadet force.

"THe skills we learn outside the classroom are just as important as the knowledge we gain inside. I am extremely grateful to the school for giving me the opportunity to succeed in my chosen career. " Around 162 old Cicestrians (former students and staff ) and their partners had booked to attend the event, coming from all over the world - New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada, America and across Europe.

In the morning, after coffee and a chance to meet old friends and view

the extensive display of memorabilia going back to the very start of the school, guests enjoyed the video welcome from Tim Peake and then listened to a detailed presentation about the school's early years written by Bill Allen and presented by actor and author David Wood.

Visitors could hear amusing and interesting tales and look at photographs of some of their favourite and not-so favourite teachers from the past.

A lively presentation was led by former deputy head John Child, history teacher Dave Smith and colleagues of the period from the school becoming a comprehensive in 1971 up until its merger with the girls school in 2016.

THey covered not only academic achievements but also the huge range of extra curricular activities including highly successful sporting teams, field trips, drama, youth activities and the award-winning Combined Cadet Force - the latter sparking off interest in the army for astronaut Tim Peake and in the RAF for Red Arrows pilot Mike Child.

Sadly, the former CHSB Kingsham wing buildings have now been boarded up and are part of the district council’s Southern Gateway plans for redevelopment but many memories of the school site were shared.

Finally, Yasmin Maskatiya, executive head of the present Chichester High School, spoke about the school as it is now and their vision for the future.

After lunch, delegates enjoyed a visit to the Chichester Gymnastics Academy, based in the Tim Peake Building, then a visit to the Combined Cadet Force headquarters where members showed off equipment and weapons they use and train with before finally moving on to the West Sussex Planetarium where senior lecturer Dr John Mason, another former pupil, gave a fascinating presentation about Tim and the International Space Station.

Abseilers hit funding heights CHILDREN with life-shortening conditions have been helped by hundreds of abseilers at Arundel Castle.

THe exclusive event saw £120,000 raised by 400 people for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THat amount will pay for more than 17 days of care at the hospice and is a fitting way to help to celebrate its 15th birthday. THose who signed up for the 180ft abseil wanted to overcome a fear of heights, raise money for a worthwhile cause, overcome a fear of heights or enjoy the wonder of abseiling from one of West Sussex's most popular landmarks.

Jo Goddard, fundraising manager at the hospice, said: "THere were emotional moments over the two days as we watched people overcome fears, abseil in memory of a loved one, or simply enjoy the moment of doing

something special to raise money for us in our 15th year.

Each participant was asked to raise £285 the amount needed by the hospice every hour.

THe highest fundraiser brought in more than £5,000, Among those who took part was Sean Carter.

He overcame his fear of heights to thank Chestnut Tree House for caring for his son. He said: "THe hospice is an amazing place.

"My son spends time there and I wanted to do something for him and for them."

Others who took part included Sussex Police's Chief Constable, Giles York, and Caroline Nicholls, the High Sheriff of West Sussex.

THe abseil was last held by the hospice 11 years ago. Chestnut Tree Hospice opened on November 11, 2003, and provides care and support to about 300 children.

` Online safety help FREE courses are being held in Bognor Regis and Chichester to help keep children and vulnerable adults safe online.

West Sussex County Council and its partners are staging the Stay Safe sessons before Christmas to give different groups the tools they need to protect those who mean the most to them.

Separate sessions will be held for parents and carers; people over the age of 50; youth and community groups; and professionals working with children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Parents and carers in the Post area should head to Newtown Social Club, in Greencourt Drive, Bognor Regis, from 6pm-8pm on November 8.

THe area's session for people over 50 will be held from 10am-mid-day on November 23 at Chichester's Edes House in West Street.

Informal training sessions about the the risk of cybercrime, child sexual exploitation and radicalisation will take place from 2pm-4pm on November 23 at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton and from 10am-mid-day on December 11 at Chichester District Council's offices. Launch of club against bullying A TWO day drop-in centre was run by a Bognor Regis-based youth organisation this week.

Sussex Against Bullying (SAB) held the event at the Bersted Green Learning Centre in Hazel Road from Monday. THe half-term week session ended with a visit to a bowling alley on Wednesday.

Further sessions have also taken place during the rest of this week as part of the organisation's work to provide a youth club and holiday project for young people aged between 11-18 who have been affected by bullying.

THe event included activities sessions, a halloween party and selfdefence training.

Benjamin Checkley, founder and

chairman of Sussex Against Bullying, said he would like to thank its trustees for their work to bring the project to fruition.

SAB was started in summer 2017

by Mr Checkley, who has a number of years of experience working with young people who have been bullied.

He has been a peer mentor for BeatBullying and its sister group, MindFull. Before that, he volunteered for St John Ambulance as a cadet.

SAB received a grant last February from the Big Lottery Fund to enable a twice weekly youth project and holiday club to be started.

Young people are referred to SAB by their parents, teachers or another professional. THis can be done on its website: sussexab.org.uk

FIREFIGHTERS from the Bognor Regis area have been among those honoured for their hard work and commitment.

A ceremony at Arundel Castle saw them presented with the long service and good conduct medal by Vice Lord-Lieutenant Harry Goring.

Darren Greene, of Bognor Reigs, received the 20-year medal. He began at Bosham and split his cover with Bognor Regis after 18 months before he moved there exclusively.

He has also worked as an aviation firefighter and crew manager at

Shoreham Airport.

Pagham resident James Mackay also received the 20-year medal. He spent time at various fire stations before becaming a lead instructor in training development and assurance three years ago.

Medals are awarded nationally, on behalf of the Queen, to full-time and oncall firefighters completing two decades of outstanding service.

Chief fire officer Gavin Watts said: "Recognising colleagues for the work that they do is one of the best bits of my job.

THis is always a wonderful evening and getting the chance to celebrate success with families and loved ones is a healthy reminder of all that is good about West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service."

THe ceremony also included awards for teamwork, lifetime achievement and volunteer of the year.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said: "Our firefighters work extremely hard to provide an essential emergency service around the clock."

Keeping his promise, the Devil refuses to let Jack into hell and throws a live coal straight from the fires of hell at him. It was a cold night, so Jack places the coal in a hollowed out turnip to stop it from going out, since which time Jack and his lantern have been roaming looking for a place to rest.

Halloween Special

Ghoulish Halloween Cupcakes M ETHOD 1. Heat oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas 3. Line a 12hole cupcake tin with paper cases. Gently melt the butter, chocolate, sugar and 100ml hot water together in a large saucepan, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool a little.

2. Stir the egg and vanilla into the chocolate mixture. Put the flour in a large mixing bowl, then add the chocolate mixture and stir until smooth.

Divide the mixture evenly between the paper cases; they should be about three-quarters full. Bake on a low shelf in the oven for 20-22 mins. Press on the cupcakes to check if they’re cooked; the tops should spring back.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

3. Use the image above as a guide to decorating the cupcakes. Packet fondant can often be quite sticky; if yours is, pat walnutsized lumps of fondant over the surface of each cake, rather than trying to roll it all out. Knead yellow and red fondant together to make orange icing.

Make extra decorations, like hair and mouths, out of fondant and stick them on using a little water.

Use the icing pens to draw lines in the fondant.

Add icing eyes wherever you like.

M ETHOD

INGREDIENTS • 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry • 50g grated parmesan or vegetarian alternative • flour, for dusting • 1 egg, beaten • poppy seeds, nigella seeds, sesame seeds or celery seeds, to decorate • black or green peppercorns

1. Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/ gas 7.

Unroll the pastry and top with a couple of handfuls of parmesan, then fold in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out to a thickness of 2mm.

Cut into 1cm strips, then twist each strip several times to form a snake.

2. Lay out the snakes on a baking sheet, then brush each one with egg and sprinkle with more cheese. To decorate, scatter over the seeds.

Flatten one end of each snake and press in two peppercorns for eyes.

Bake for 12-14 mins, or until golden. Leave to cool.

Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Two grams of spirulina a day keeps the doctor away I HAVE written about spirulina many times, but honestly it’s a favourite super food that I think should be in every cupboard!

Spirulina is actually super serious as a health supplement, but what exactly is it?

It is a type of bacteria called cyanobacterium, which is often referred to as blue-green algae and it can benefit your body and health in an almost mind-boggling number of ways. If the idea of putting algae into your body grosses you out, well, I would say turn away now, but you really shouldn't.

Spirulina is a bonafide super food with a list of benefits and nutrients so long, it seems too good to be true. THis super powered kind of algae is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and has been used as a food supplement for over 20 years here in the UK. Spirulina is incredibly nutrient-dense and might actually be the most nutritious food on the planet. In 1974, spirulina was actually named the 'best food for the future' at the united world food conference.

It's touted as an incredible source of protein—it's between 55 and 75 per cent

protein and serves as a fantastic source of that basic dietary need for vegans and people without access to other forms of protein.

Spirulina can be a great addition to a vegan diet considering the iron and B12 that may be naturally low in these diets. THis dietfriendly algae contains high levels of many nutrients including calcium, potassium, B Vitamins and iron. Not only does it have high amounts of many micro nutrients, but it also contains amino acids, which are important components of proteins necessary for growth and repair in our bodies.

A single teaspoon of spirulina contains four grams of protein, as well as 11 per cent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin B1 (thiamin), 15 per cent of the RDA of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), four per cent of the RDA of vitamin B3 (niacin), 21 per cent of the RDA of copper, and 11 per cent of the RDA of iron.

In addition to all of that, spirulina also contains significant amounts of magnesium, potassium, and manganese. Magnesium plays a pivotal role in helping to regulate muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and

blood pressure in the body, as well as making protein, bone, and DNA. Potassium, which is a type of electrolyte, aids in nerve function and muscle contraction and it regulates your heartbeat. And, finally, manganese helps your body develop and function properly throughout your life.

In addition to being ridiculously nutrientrich, spirulina is also a powerful antiinflammatory and antioxidant. You've probably heard the term 'antioxidant' thrown around a lot, but you might not know why antioxidants are so important. Basically, they combat oxidative stress, which has the potential to harm our cells and even our DNA. Spirulina's antioxidant properties are thanks to a substance called phycocyanin, which is also responsible for giving spirulina its vibrant blue-green colour.

Spirulina has also been shown to lower "bad" cholesterol and, in some cases, even raise "good" cholesterol and may also be helpful for people with diabetes. One small study discovered patients with type 2 diabetes found that two grams of spirulina daily helped reduce blood sugar levels considerably.

THis impressive algae also appears to have

anti-cancer effects and has been shown to reduce cancer occurrence and the size of tumour cells, as well as being linked to reducing precancerous lesions in the mouth.

Spirulina's benefits can also extend to allergy sufferers. Two grams of spirulina a day can help reduce common rhinitis symptoms, like nasal congestion and sneezing. It has also been used as a treatment for elderly patients suffering from anemia and may help increase muscle strength, among younger people and athletes.

One of spirulina's most impressive and wide-reaching benefits, however, is as a nutrition supplement for malnourished people, particularly children and patients with HIV and AIDS. In a pilot study on the use of spirulina to treat malnourished children in central Africa, a dose of just ten grams per day seemed to significantly and quickly improve the nutritional status of undernourished children. Spirulina is officially recommended as a treatment for malnutrition by the world health organisation.

OVER a century and a half ago and, ake sure it'sto be more precise, in 1861, Giuseppe Garibaldi, in view of his celebrity and folk hero status in this country, had a d motivatedbiscuit named after him which you may r companywell have tried this century or even mpany andearlier in the previous one! fitness.

Eh bien, removing the first five letters of his surname reveals the name of the 730671436wine outlet I have chosen for this week’s nyltd.comcolumn.

Aldi never ceases to amaze me, notably kelly.co.ukin terms of its range and competitive pricing. Incredibly, my first wine requires just a minuscule outlay of just £3.19 for a wine that appears to be French in origin, given its name.

THe Baron Saint Jean red wine is , in fact, a Tempranillo of Spanish provenance and is a mellow, light and low alcohol wine (just 11.5 per cent) and one which should not offend anyone’s palate - a good party wine for when your guests are well oiled. Great value, however, and I next made the 90p jump in price to acquire a Chilean Merlot in the form of a

2017 Andara Merlot.

THese days, a Chilean Merlot is a fairly safe bet and this one is no exception being a dry Merlot with red fruits to the fore and a hint of chocolate to boot. Soft and fruity, there is not much not to like.

My first white wine, on sale for £4.19, was a wine to challenge my prejudice in the form of a 2017 Castellore Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie. THe only Pinot I normally touch is Pinot Noir, but, in all fairness, this low alcohol Pinot Grigio proved to be a soft, fresh, crisp light Summer wine with pear and white stone fruit on the palate and minerality on the finish and one I can commend to you. Another red wine, the Vignobles Roussellet Malbec Syrah blend from France, on sale for £4.69, had blackberry, blueberry and damson fruit flavours and is a wine which could well divide opinion - this blend does not float my boat, but is not poor in quality.

My next three wines all retail for £4.99, beginning wth a Marlborough Makaraka Sauvignon Blanc, which was decidedly refreshing, perking up the taste buds with an abundance of fruit, lemon zest and subtle flavours of mango and pineapple and a good buy at this price.

Another white, the 2017 Soave Superiore Classico, is grown on steeper slopes on volcanic soils and proved to be crisp with a pronounced, delightful floral character thus proving fragrant culminating in a creamy finish and one

I can wholeheartedly recommend.

THe final wine for just under five readies was the Californian Rockstone Ranches Malbec and this full-flavoured red turned out to be bold, jammy, fruity with plums and blackberries on the nose with hints of vanilla and tobacco and strong liquorice notes.

THis wine would benefit from aerating, if not decanting and is mucho bang for your buck and a good pair to a barbecue or a lasagne dish.

For an extra £1 expended, the 2017 Freeman’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc displayed complexity, copious layers of flavour and gooseberry, lime and passion fruit to the fore and a well - crafted wine meritorious of your consideration. A Mâcon - Villages for £6.99 is good value, although I prefer my Mâcons to be a tad creamier.

My penultimate selection was that of a 2015 Château Peymouton Saint Émilion Grand Cru. Priced at £10.99, this wine has undoubted finesse, is fruit forward with earthy notes and oozes smooth berry fruits and juicy blackcurrant with leather, tobacco and firm tannins.

THis wine is affordable Saint-Émilion which could be decanted and is one to lay down for at least two years for optimum enjoyment, but also drinkable now.

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 onions, finely chopped • 1kg pumpkin or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks • 700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock • 150ml double cream For the croutons • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread, crusts removed • handful pumpkin seeds

1. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured.

2. Add 1kg pumpkin or squash, cut into chunks, to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.

3. Pour 700ml vegetable or chicken stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft.

4. Pour 150ml double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can pour the soup

through a fine sieve. THe soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months.

To make the croutons: cut 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread into small squares.

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp.

Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted. THese can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container.

Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.

• 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash – after peeling and scraping out the seeds, you need about 400g/14oz • 1 tbsp olive oil, plus a drizzle for the pumpkin • 2 garlic cloves • 8 spring onions • 25g butter • 200g risotto rice • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1l hot vegetable stock, plus extra splash if needed • 50g grated parmesan (or vegetarian alternative) • small handful coriander, roughly chopped

1. Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/ gas 4. Chop up the pumpkin or squash into 1.5cm cubes (kids – ask for help if it’s slippery).

Put it on a baking tray, drizzle over some oil, then roast for 30 mins.

2. While the pumpkin is roasting, you can make the risotto. Put the garlic in a sandwich bag, then bash lightly with a rolling pin until it’s crushed.

3. Cut up the spring onions with your scissors.

4. Heat 1 tbsp oil with the butter in your pan over a medium heat – not too hot. Add the spring onions and garlic. Once the onions are soft but not getting brown, add the

rice and cumin. Stir well to coat in the buttery mix for about 1 min.

5. Now add half a cup of the stock, and stir every now and then until it has all disappeared into the rice. Carry on adding and stirring in a large splash of stock at a time, until you have used up all the stock – this will take about 20 mins.

If it isn’t, add a splash more stock, and carry on cooking for a bit. Once the rice is soft enough to eat, gently stir in the grated cheese, chopped coriander and roasted pumpkin.

Ailsa Artingstall, pictured below, decided to set herself annual challenges and this year she took on a triathlon.

She got a personal trainer through Core Results in Chichester and started on her triathlon journey.

"THis year, to be a bit different, I decided to pick something that seemed totally ridiculous. I decided to sign up for a triathlon.

Bear in mind that at this point, I was totally unfit. I didn’t do early mornings.

"I had a 20-year-old bike with a basket on the front. I didn’t walk anywhere, let alone run, and detested swimming. What could be more of a challenge?

"At my first meeting with Core Results co-owner Greg, I was soon put at ease by his friendly chatter and the team’s nonjudgmental approach. I left the meeting with a can-do attitude and confident that there was a team of people there that were going to help me. " THe first triathlon was the Winchester May Day Triathlon.

"While my time spent in the gym did give me confidence, I was also worried about turning up and being amongst super fit people, feeling like a fish out of water. But to my relief, it was a bit like going to Core Results - everyone I met on the day was friendly, and the event was full of people of every age, shape and size you can imagine.

"My knees held out and I completed it and, to my utter amazement, I really enjoyed it. I decided one triathlon wasn’t enough. Instead, I’ll complete ten – and entered nine more over the next four months.

"Recently, I completed my 10th triathlon, still doing breaststroke, but cycling a bit faster and plodding along happily for the 5k run. I would never in a million years have thought I could complete one triathlon, let alone ten."

SUSSEX could be in for a share of a £22m government fund aimed at steering young people away from serious crime.

Katy Bourne, the Sussex police and crime commissioner, has submitted a bid for funding from the early intervention youth fund for work to prevent young people getting involved in serious violence.

THe bid was outlined as the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, which scrutinises the work of Mrs Bourne, heard a report on the work the police are doing with schools and other educational establishments.

THe report outlined a seven per cent increase in recorded crimes relating to educational establishments. THis included a 45 per cent rise in sexual offences.

Mark Streater, chief executive of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, said the total represented an increase of 0.12 crimes a school.

THe increase in sexual offences was down to schools being more pro-active in reporting cases of sexting, in which young people sent explicit images of themselves on mobile phones.

THe panel heard Sussex Police had appointed 22 youth prevention officers to strengthen links between the schools and colleges in which they spend at least a quarter of their time.

"THe emphasis is very much on trying to avoid the criminalisation of children rather than schools just asking for police interventions that tip them into the criminal justice system," said Mr Streater.

"If our bid for government funding is successful, hopefully we will be able to do far more at an early stage to prevent young people being drawn into really problematic areas."

During the meeting, at County Hall in Lewes, Mrs Bourne also updated the panel about a new way of handling police complaints from next April. THis would see Mrs Bourne, rather than the Chief Constable, have the final say in appeals against the result of complaints about the police.

A PAIR of runners from a Chichester dental practice took on this year's Great South Run. Practice owner Dr Magdalena Butler and clinical co-ordinator Sarah Stone, from Family Dental Clinic in Chichester, braved a gruelling training regime again this year to raise much needed funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

THe pair completed the tenmile run in 2017 and raised more than £500 for the charity that is dear to their hearts.

Sarah said: “We both competed in the Great South Run last year and enjoyed the atmosphere and company of the other runners so much that we thought, why not do it all again this year?

“We ran in aid of Alzheimer's Society, as my mum who sadly died two years ago, had this condition.

A GROUP of women who went to school together in the 1950s have enjoyed their annual reunion.

THe ladies, pictured above, who attended Chichester High School, started a get-together in 1998 with 100 of them.

Since then, at the request of one of the women, Pat Alderton organises an annual reunion of the classes of 1951.

BREAST cancer patients in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas will be helped by a beautiful patchwork quilt.

THe quilt, pictured below, with staff and volunteers, is the prize in a draw being held by the Friends of Chichester Hospitals towards a £30,000 x-ray guided biopsy system.

THis will help staff in the breast clinic at St Richard's Hospital diagnose and treat very small cancer nodes to save patients a longer and inconvenient journey to Worthing.

THe quilt has been made by two Friends' volunteers, Penny Haddacks and Sue Barge, after almost a year of stitching in a pattern known as Path to School.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said: "Penny and Sue have produced a real work of art. THe quilt would look wonderful as a bedspread or hung on a wall.

"It's been much admired since it went on display in our shop. It will help to fund vital equipment which will make a real difference for patients. Clinic staff are thrilled - the biopsy system will help them so much."

Sir, I refer to your article in issue129, dated Friday, October 19, 2018.

THe article's author, Ms Jane Church, starts her letter 'Sorry to be thick here......'. Jane, for your information, you are not thick, and indeed, you should be a councillor.

With more people like yourself in post, I believe we could stem the tide of councillors, predominantly Conservative ones, who are obviously hell-bent on covering this land in bricks and mortar. THey don't care a jot what concerned residents have to say, and sadly there is huge apathy among the populace. When will residents get fire in their bellies, and start fighting these crackpot decisions?

THe area where I live, West Meads, is now gridlocked in the mornings and a racetrack by night. Motorcycles screaming along the roads and idiots in fast cars with racing exhausts causing so much noise through the night.

But no one is listening, they don't care. Why? Because they are predominantly NIMBY. It doesn't affect them.

I was running and fell, hitting my face, knee, elbow and hands when a kind couple came past in their white pickup with a dog.

THe husband is a fisherman, so the wife told me, and offered to help and run me back to Bunn Leisure, where I own a caravan.

THen their friends came along in a red 4x4 car and offered to help and they felt this ride would be more comfortable for me.

THe car was driven by Linda and she had her friend with her, whose name, unfortunately, I do not recall but she gave me some water.

All four were truly caring and willing to help and I hope they might read your paper as it is freely available in Selsey and know that I am very grateful to them.

Chichester women in the First World War

By Pat Saunders, volunteer, and Amanda Rogan, learning officer, at the Novium Museum THROUGHOUT the next few weeks, to commemorate the end of the First World War, we will examine the experiences and sacrifice made at this time by so many local people. THe first of these articles looks into the many different ways in which numerous local women contributed to the war effort.

Before the First World War, women had traditionally been employed in domestic service at boarding houses, hotels and in trades such as millinery and laundry work.

Following the outbreak of war, the need for this work was reduced. However, a shortage of labour caused by so many men joining the armed forces opened up new opportunities for women.

In August, 1914, the National Union of Women’s suffrage Societies announced that their ordinary political work, seeking the vote for women, had been suspended and they were prepared for the whole organisation to offer their services to local authorities.

THe Women’s Emergency Corps was formed in 1914 as a way of organising women’s effort on the home front. In the Chichester district, Mayoress Mrs Garland and Lady Mary Bertie, wife of Chichester MP Lord Edmund Talbot, were the main organisers. In April, 1915, a meeting of the Women’s Emergency Corps was hosted at Oaklands House, where a talk

was given about the work undertaken by the organisation and money was raised for the “Work for Women fund”. In Chichester, this fund had set up a toy-making workshop, filling a gap created by the banning of imported German toys.

THe Chichester Aid Society recruited voluntary women workers to provide medical supplies to the Red Cross. Volunteers also carried out duties such as cooking, cleaning and driving ambulances. THey could also work alongside members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), who provided nursing care for military personnel.

A local woman, Ada Haines, joined the VAD in August, 1914, and worked at both the Royal West Sussex Hospital and Graylingwell Hospital, which served as a military hospital from 1915.

By March, 1915, there were female patrols who were tasked with looking out for women and ensuring their conduct was acceptable given the increased presence of soldiers in and around Chichester.

THese patrollers undertook training and were authorised to speak to girls out on the streets about their behaviour, make note of anything that could affect their welfare and, if possible, persuading them to return home for their own safety.

The Chichester Aid Society recruited voluntary women workers to provide medical supplies to the Red Cross.

At the Fox public house in Singleton on November 9, 1915, the first ever meeting of the Women’s Institute in England took place in a back room at the invitation of the innkeeper, Mrs Lashly.

THe movement was based on strong organisation by women for women. THeir aims were to release men from the land, increase the food supply, prevent waste and start a war savings association to support the war effort.

As war progressed, food shortages increased, creating the need for female agricultural labourers. By the spring of 1915, the Board of Agriculture was in favour of women undertaking farm work. However, there was some resistance and concern that as women were ‘cheap labour’, this would depress men’s wages.

THe Board of Agriculture agreed to organise classes for women to improve work skills such as butter-making and dairy work.

In 1917, a national campaign to employ women on the land began, which led to the formation of the Women’s Land Army and Women’s Forestry Corps. Women working for these organisations were given uniforms that were designed to give women the same freedom of movement that men had while working.

One member of the Women’s Forestry Corps was Marie Nathan, who worked in the Petworth area. She recalled ‘In winter, the work was extremely hard, drenching rain, frost, mud and cold’.

Many other roles were taken on by

Chichester women during the war, such as working as a ticket collector on trains like Lottie Ousley. Dorothy Paget worked tirelessly to bring a group of Belgian refugees to Chichester and raised funds to help them settle into their new life. Maria Louise Buckell (nee Cornwall) organised the collection and despatch of large quantities of medical supplies to the western front, Dardenelles, and various clearing hospitals, as well as sending items of clothing for troops in the trenches.

Many of the men killed during the First World War left behind families. Women who lost their husbands were given a war pension, though this was often delayed or insufficient.

After the war, some widows relied on charitable donations and support from the community while others continued to work or retrained in new areas including midwifery, dress-making and upholstery.

THe contribution made by women to the war effort added greatly to their cause for voting rights. Women had shown they were capable of taking on a variety of roles and contributing more to society. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed, allowing women over the age of 30, with property qualifications, to vote. Although this did not include all women, it was a huge step and by 1928 women had equal suffrage with men.

Articles throughout November will explore the impact of war on men serving in the armed forces throughout the conflict.

Blues out to stop the rot in Essex PostSport after a crushing derby day defeat CHICHESTER RFC's rotten run of form rolls on as Blues look to register only their second win of the season on the road at THurrock.

Blues head to Essex tomorrow (3pm) with just one club below them in the London South One. A crushing 44-21 loss away at Brighton last weekend leaves Scott Ashley's injury-hit side second bottom and in desperate need of a victory to lift the gloom around Oaklands Park.

Tomorrow's trip to the bank of the THames pitches the Blues against a mid-table side who have won their last two in what is a very competitive division.

But Chi know that a victory would make everything look a little rosier and lift them away from the dropzone.

A key aim for Ashley is to try and find some consistency, with injuries meaning he has rarely had a settled XV in consecutive matches this season.

THe disruption continued against Sussex rivals Brighton last weekend. Blues made eight changes to the team that lost to Dartfordians at the start of the month.

Hungarian international Baz Magda was

among those to come into the pack.

Chi did make a fast start, however, and should have taken the lead as Ed Jenkinson was denied by a match-saving tackle.

It was the hosts, though, who scored first.

But Chi hit back to go 7-5 up when skipper Charlie Wallace ran on to a Chris Johnson offload.

THat was as good as it got for Blues as Brighton took charge, going in at the break 15-7 up. THe hosts then scored three tries in the second period to take total control.

Chi did get a consolation through Jenkinson before Sam Renwick wrapped up the scoring on the whistle. * Bognor warmed up for a top-of-the-table clash with high-flying Sandown & Shanklin tomorrow (3pm) with an eight-try romp against Gosport & Fareham IIs last weekend.

THe 53-3 victory in the Hampshire Avenue sunshine moved the Purple and Greens up to joint second in the table, alongside Sandown & Shanklin, who had an off-day against pacesetters Basingstoke.

Head coach Billy Toone knows the trip to the Isle of Wight will be a tougher test but he was delighted with his young side's performance.

DARTS: Micky Rowland was the star of the show in week three of the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League as the Legends A player helped his team to a 17-4 hammering of Newtown Raiders.

Rowland threw just 40 darts in his matches, which included one maximum as he chalked up a 25 point average.

Record turnout for Bognor Park Run

SCORES of runners put their best foot forward as the Tone Zone running club helped the Bognor Park Run mark a milestone in style.

On the 220th edition of the 5k timed fun run held every Saturday morning in Hotham Park, the club provided volunteers and pacers from 20 minutes up to 35 minutes, to help people better their times.

A record number of Tone Zone runners ran as well, with 58 turning out to help raise the profile of the club and eight of them grabbed themselves a personal best.

Following the event, there was lots of positive feedback about how the pacers had helped runners grab a personal best or beat a specific time barrier.

Among those taking part were husband and wife duo Jackie and Mark Williamson who were all smiles as they ran the full course practically hand in hand.

On Sunday, the Great South Run again saw a good turnout for the club for a 10 mile route which takes runners through the historic

dockyard and around Portsmouth, before finishing along the seafront.

THis year Tone Zone had 27 runners take part. Daryl Fairbrother was the first home for the club finishing in a very quick time of 1:10.

He was closely followed by Gary Pidgeon who soared through to get a big personal best time of 1:13. Adam Norgett and Helana Wilmers also beat their previous PBs. Having only starting running with the club in January, Lee Hayward, Sue Hayward and Lisa Broad all finished in 1:53. Julie Ede and Tina Ede continued their strong running form to finish in 2:11. Another beginner to the club this year, Nic Baglee, finished in three hours.

Along the coast was Peter Lee, who ran the Hove Prom 10k. After narrowly missing out on his 37 minute target by just 7 seconds at the Littlehampton 10k earlier this year, Lee smashed the barrier, running a time of 36:41.

Over in Jersey, running the Spartons West Park 5k, was Tony Hancock who clocked a respectable time of 21:35.

Clack is back for Chi City as league leaders add to ranks

'Ladies are going places' NEW Chichester City Ladies Nadine Bazan says 'exciting times' are ahead for the highflying Oaklands Park side.

THe experienced full back joins the ranks as Aaron Smith's side continue their march up the National League Southern Premier Division.

After making her debut in the 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers last weekend, the former Portsmouth Ladies skipper believes the club is going places Bazan, who has made more than 160 appearances and joins from Southampton Saints, said: “Joining Chichester has so far been an amazing experience. THe girls are all so welcoming and the work ethic of the whole club, players, managers, coaches and physios is inspiring.

“When Chi approached me, I was immediately excited at the opportunity to play their style of football and to be back in the National League.

“I am looking forward to being challenged and pushed to another level, and feel that Chichester is the team to do that.

“It is also a really exciting time for Chichester given their current form and I feel very

privileged to be a part of it.”

THe signing of Bazan, a proven winner at this level, is a real coup for manager Aaron Smith.

Just nine matches into his reign, his side have tasted defeat just once.

Last weekend's victory over QPR lifted Chi into second in the table, just four points behind Coventry United with a game in hand.

THe win was sealed thanks to a devastating first half performance.

Goals from Hollie Wride, Jade Widdows and Cherelle Khassal put the Green Army into a 3-0 lead before Jo Wilson got a goal back on the stroke of half-time for QPR. It was a different tale in the second-half as the hosts grew in confidence.

When Widdows was carried off with 25 minutes left to play, Chi had to battle on with 10.

But Smith watched on in pride as his side held on for three points despite Chantele Lawrence netting a late free kick.

Next for City is a first home game in six weeks when they host Cardiff City Ladies on Sunday (2pm). Admission is adults £4, concessions £1.

TABLE-TOPPING Chichester City have added to their ranks as they look to keep up their promotion push.

THe Oaklands Park side are a point clear at the top of the SCFL Premier after a nervy 1-0 victory over AFC Uckfield Town last weekend.

Ellis Martin scored the only goal of the game for Chi in first half injury time as City did just enough to return home with all three points.

With a number of sides breathing down their necks, Rutherford knows his side must keep on racking up the victories - with the focus now turning to a home match against Crawley Down Gatwick tomorrow (3pm).

City will have at least a couple of new additions in their ranks.

Among them will be tricky wideman Josh Clack, who has returned to training with the club after his release from jail following a GBH charge.

Rutherford has also secured the services of former Worthing FC midfielder Ross Edwards, who has been without a club after taking a break from the game last year.

Young Canadian footballer Emmett Dunn has also signed but is awaiting international clearance.

Sids seek second win in nine

SIDLESHAM'S slump shows no sign of stopping as Steve Bailey's side have gone nearly a month without tasting victory.

Despite a promising start to life back in step five football, those following the Recreation Ground side have witnessed only one win in eight matches in all competitions.

THeir poor form, though, has not stopped the Sids occupying mid-table in SCFL Division One. But lose at home to Storrington tomorrow (3pm) and they could drop all the way down into the drop zone.

Scoring goals has been a problem for Steve

Bailey's side as they have netted 15 in 10 league matches so far, putting them among the lowest scorers in the division.

THey did put in one of their brighter attacking displays of the year so far at home to Seaford Town on Saturday.

But the strikes from Ryan Chittock and Ben Mepham were cancelled out by four first half goals from the visitors.

Sids will be looking to keep it tighter at the back tomorrow against a side who are one place above them in the table.

THey will face an even tough test in midweek

when they head to SCFL Premier outfit Saltdean United in the third round of the RUR Cup on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey are three places but eight points ahead of their near neighbours, meaning they are very much looking upwards rather than over their shoulders.

A Ryan Morey strike early on was enough to give Daren Pearce's side the victory in what was a very poor game of football at Mile Oak last weekend.

Tomorrow, the Blues are at home, hosting bottom side Midhurst & Easebourne (3pm) knowing a win will make it three victories in a row for a side that seems to be finding their feet.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to build on a rare victory as they head to Rustington tomorrow (3pm).

THe opening three months of the season have been extremely difficult for everyone at Walton Lane.

THe early season departure of former manager Dennis Hughes has left the first team trying to play catch up.

But they are slowly making progress, winning their first game in six last weekend after beating league new boys Brighton Electricity. After falling behind in the first half, Bosham hit their stride in the second thanks to a Ryan Coombes brace and late strike from Patrick Bulbeck sealed the three points.

Fourth vs second as Lions host YM PAGHAM'S title credentials will be put to the test this weekend as the unbeaten Lions welcome in-form Horsham YMCA to Nyetimber Lane (3pm).

Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds' side are yet to taste defeat in the SCFL Premier this season. But a failure to turn chances into victories means that Pagham are losing ground on the pacesetters.

A 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Lingfield last weekend means the Lions are now five points behind leaders Chichester.

On reflection, it was two points dropped as Pagham gave away two second half goals that eventually cost them dear.

Callum Overton gave them the lead twice, the first being a well-taken penalty just before

the break. But missed chances came back to haunt Pagham as Lingfield capitalised on two mistakes to share the spoils.

With second place YM heading south tomorrow, the Lions will be keen to show that they do possess the killer instinct against a side who have won four of their past five in all competitions.

THe top-of-the-table clash will be followed on Tuesday with a trip to SCFL Division One side Billingshurst on Tuesday in the third round of the RUR Cup (7.45pm).

Following defeat in the Peter Bentley Cup to arch rivals Chichester City a fortnight ago, Pagham will have an extra incentive to progress in a trophy and bring yet more silverware to Nyetimber Lane.

Pearce: Character needed for Bognor to end depressing run Next Game

BRACKNELL TOWN (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is backing his young side to show real character in ending what he's called a 'depressing run'.

Rocks fans were on cloud nine a fortnight ago after seeing their team defeat Bostik Premier leaders Tonbridge Angels 2-1 away.

But, since then, an injury hit side has failed to win in three matches, with the club waving goodbye to their unbeaten league record and hopes of silverware in the process.

Two of those matches have come in the past week, with a 0-0 draw against Margate in the league followed by a 2-1 loss away to Hythe Town in the Velocity Trophy.

With a trip to Bostik South Central side Bracknell Town looming tomorrow (3pm) in the FA Trophy, Pearce will hope a match against lower league opposition will be the perfect opportunity to rediscover that winning feeling.

Pearce said: "We have gone from a wonderful position where we should have launched on to something good to a very depressing three games.

"We will find out a lot about the character of the team in how we respond to that."

Despite the poor run, Rocks remain well in contention at the top of the Bostik Premier.

THe point picked up against Margate puts them fourth in the league, four points off Tonbridge at the top.

Rocks really should have claimed the

victory, though, as they spurned a series of chances against a solid but unspectacular mid-table side.

THe same could be said for Tuesday's cup match in Kent against a lower league side.

Tommy Scutt had given Pearce's side the lead before two second half goals saw them dumped out of the league cup.

Pearce said: "In the three games that we have not won we have dominated possession in every one. We could have won every one by three clear goals and the opposition couldn't complain. I am very disappointed."

THe reason for the drastic change in fortunes is not obvious, although a growing injury list cannot help.

Defenders Corey Heath, Keaton Wood and Joe Dandy, along with attackers Dan Smith and Jimmy Wild, are all out with injuries although Brad Lethbridge will be back for the Bracknell trip.

Pearce said: "It's not a coincidence, if you lose good players in good positions you will suffer. We don't have the luxury of three of four players at every position so we have to take it on the chin.

And as for Bracknell?

He said: "We do not know not much about them. We've played four teams from the level below this season and have won one, drawn one and lost two. Our record is not great but we will prepare as well as we can."

Rocks young guns up for cup THE UNBEATEN record in the league may have gone, but at least Rocks still have a cup or two to look forward to.

THe next fortnight will see Bognor try and find safe passage in the FA Trophy and the Sussex Senior Cup. After the Rocks' 2-1 defeat against Hythe Town on Tuesday evening in the Velocity Trophy, the two competitions are the last chance the club has of cup glory this season.

Manager Jack Pearce, though, will be sure to use the cups as a chance to blood some of the promising youngsters at the club.

THere's good news for fans, too, as they can watch the Rocks take on Seaford Town in a Sussex Senior Cup second round clash at Nyewood Lane at discounted prices.

Pearce's men host the SCFL Division One side on Tuesday November 6 (7.45pm). Both clubs have agreed admission prices of ÂŁ5 for adults and under 18s for free.

Bognor last played Seaford in the same competition in November, 2010, winning 6-0.

Rocks secretary Simon Cook said none of the players who featured that day remained at the club, adding: "No surprise as some of our first team would have been nine years old at the time!"

QUITE a lot has changed in a fortnight since I last wrote this column.

We went from beating Bostik Premier leaders Tonbridge Angels to then losing two and drawing one of our next three matches.

When that drop off in form happens you often get asked what the reason is. THe simple answer is I don't really know!

I think we are probably a bit low on confidence at the moment as we are not taking chances and we are defending very poorly.

It's only natural but the longer in games that you do not score, if you are making silly mistakes and then giving away goals, your confidence only gets worse.

I don't think anyone needs to start worrying yet, though. We need to get one or two goals and then I think we will have a bit of belief back in the side.

After beating the league leaders away from home, we were supposed to be on a roll.

But since then we've not won.

I don't think complacency comes into it.

THe match at home to Folkestone when we lost 4-2 was a one off to be honest.

THe goals we conceded were horrendous and due to really bad defensive errors.

It doesn't matter how many chances that you can create, when you concede four at home then you will never win.

Having said that, we were good going forward and could have got a point out of it if we'd taken the chances that we had.

It was the same with Margate.

It was a disjointed match with the injury to their player - I hope he is making a good recovery now - but we should have won.

We are definitely getting into the right positions but whether it's due to final ball not being there, a lack of composure or simply luck, we're just not finding the back of the net.

We have to take extra care in the final third. THe effort is

there and we are still working hard to get the chances but we are just not putting them away.

Getting players back like Keaton and Dan Smith will also help as that will give us a little bit more belief.

THe draw on Saturday was followed by a trip to Hythe Town in midweek.

A long trip like that on a Tuesday evening is not ideal but it is what it is.

For me, I started work early and finished at 3pm and ate in the car on the way down.

How I get to those types of matches will always depend on how far it is and where I am working that day.

Against Hythe, I was working in Bognor so I got a lift down with Jack and Holly.

I know the Portsmouth players got a van with six of them in there and the Brighton lot travelled down in one car.

Despite the long trip, I think our focus was there. We didn't play that badly and in terms of creating chances we did more than them.

But, once again, our defending was terrible and we can't finish to save our lives at the moment. THat needs to change.

Next up is Bracknell, a side ranked one league below us.

THis does not mean anything, though, as we have already played Sudbury and Hythe from the same level and we have not won any of them.

THe may be from a lower league but they do not play a lower standard football.

Of course being the cup, we want to play well. THoughts about a cup run do not come into now, however, as we're taking it game by game.

Once you start getting three or four games in that's when you start to think 'we are doing well here' and start to look ahead.

When it's the first round, you just want to get your foot in the door and get into the next round. But it definitely will not be easy at all.
