Priory Park 100 hailed a success

City unites for a royal visit

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE AMERICAN Ambassador to the United Kingdom has described the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to Chichester on Wednesday as a sign of the special relationship between the two countries.

During their city tour, the couple were shown a rare Sussex copy of the American

Declaration of Independence - one of only two contemporary handwritten ceremonial manuscript copies.

U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson told The Chichester Post: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit to see this inspiring and historic copy of the Declaration in Chichester perfectly represents the special relationship between our two countries.

Trio convicted on city drug charges

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THREE men have been given extensive prison sentences for conspiring to supply class A drugs in Chichester.

Samuel Dean, Harry Dean and Samuel Blondell were convicted at Portsmouth Crown Court on Tuesday last week, after pleading guilty to charges and being involved with the conspiracy to supply drugs.

On July 8, 2016, officers spotted a car linked to drugs in Sherbourne Road, Chichester, and followed the vehicle into Hannah Square where the driver left the vehicle and attempted to flee.

Officers chased down Samuel Dean, arrested him and seized the vehicle. A search was conducted of the car and cocaine, with a purity of 94 per cent and a street value between £18,560 and £27,840, was discovered. Officers also found a quantity of ketamine with a street value of £140 within the vehicle.

Extensive research by Chichester police was conducted and officers were informed by Border Force that on August 26, 2016, they had intercepted a package, with 360g of ecstasy inside, going to Samuel Dean’s address but with his brother’s name, Harry Dean, on the parcel.

Officers were then able to link Samuel Dean to Blondell after text message conversations regarding the purchasing of the drugs package were discovered.

Samuel Dean, 20, of Grafton Road, Selsey, was charged with conspiracy to import class A drugs (ecstasy), conspiracy to supply class A drug (cocaine), possession with intent to

supply class B (ketamine) and money laundering.

Harry Dean, 28, of the same address as his brother, was charged with conspiracy to supply class A drugs (cocaine) and money laundering.

Acquaintance Samuel Blondell, 23, of Eastergate, Chichester, was charged with conspiracy to import class A drugs (ecstasy).

Ceri Spratt, of Chichester police said: “This case took months of analytical, computer and phone investigations to enable the trio to be charged. It has been a very long road with a lot of hard work, but the end result with their sentences has proved it to be worthwhile.

“This should send a strong message to those who deal in drugs that we will use the full extent of our powers, abilities and technology to secure evidence and achieve convictions.

"No one knows their neighbourhood like you and we ask that you report matters of drugs to us immediately.”

Samuel Dean received a six year and nine month prison sentence, brother Harry was given six years and four months and Samuel Blondell was handed a six year prison sentence.

Steve Jones, Border Force senior officer, said: “Border Force’s close liaison with Sussex Police officers following the interception of the drugs in the postal system proved to be a vital part of this criminal investigation.

"My officers work 24 hours a day at ports, airports and mail sorting centres to disrupt attempts to smuggle illegal substances into the UK. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement partners to bring offenders to justice.”

Cannabis plants seized in flat in city were worth thousands CHICHESTER police have seized 79 cannabis plants following a flat warrant.

Officers entered a flat in Longlands Road, Southbourne, near Chichester on Wednesday, September 26, after complaints from members of the public were received regarding an unusual smell coming from the property.

Inside the flat officers discovered 79 cannabis plants with a street value of tens of thousands of pounds.

PC Sam Fenner said: “We are dedicated in preventing the supply of drugs causing harm to the community and this discovery will disrupt the distribution of the drug to the area.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the members of the public for coming forward with the initial information. We listened to their concerns and were able to act quickly following the information they

provided.

"Our prevention teams are focusing on preventative policing and tackling local issues.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have noticed anyone going into this flat or any recent suspicious behaviour to report it to us without delay.”

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A Royal British Legion ‘Tommy’ has been unveiled at Great Ballard School in Eartham.

As part of their armistice commemorations, marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, former pupil, Captain Nick Cooke-Priest, along with Year 8 boys, unveiled the statue.

Captain Cooke-Priest also spoke to Great Ballard pupils, parents and staff in a special assembly at the school to mark

the occasion and to remind pupils of the importance of this commemoration.

He also told pupils about the Battle of the Boar’s Head, in which hundreds of young men from Sussex that formed the 11th, 12th and 13th Southdowns Battalions lost their lives.

This lesser-known battle saw more than 366 Sussex men killed and over 1,000 wounded or taken prisoner.

Captain Cooke-Priest said: “It was an honour to be able to revisit my former school to remind pupils of what was sacrificed in order for life to be lived as it is today.

"The Royal British Legion’s Silent

Silhouettes are a constant reminder for all of us that past sacrifices should never be forgotten and the fact that Great Ballard pupils are making this a part of their school life is admirable.”

Headmaster Richard Evans added: “We are incredibly lucky to have had such an inspiring talk from Captain CookePriest. Not only does it help pupils put ‘remembrance’ into context, it also helps them to see first-hand where hard work, ambition and determination can get you.”

Captain Cooke-Priest has just been commissioned as the Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of two new Royal Navy aircraft carriers.

THE FOOTBRIDGE at Stockbridge has opened to members of the public after months of delay on works.

The footbridge, which allows pedestrians to cross the A27 between Stockbridge and Donnington, was scheduled to open back in April after work on the replacement bridge began in January.

A spokesperson for Donnington Parish Council said: "Donnington Parish Council is very pleased the bridge has passed the final checks and been reopened. We look forward to the completion of the painting/ remedial works which will see the end of the project".

An ‘unacceptable movement’ during testing in May led to engineers being called back to try to solve the problem and further delays were experienced.

Highways England had previously come under fire when they responded to complaints over the temporary traffic lights located on the A27.

The safety lights, which were found around Stockbridge roundabout, had been set up back in January while the footbridge was being replaced.

These traffic lights were to allow pedestrians to cross the road while the current footbridge is closed. However,

safety was raised by residents, motorists and councillors and the traffic lights were taken away.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "This has been a complex and challenging project, but it has been important not to compromise on quality or engineering standards.

"It would have been wrong to reopen the bridge before it was properly tested and we were confident it was safe and reliable. We are grateful to local people for their patience and apologise again for the delay in restoring this important community asset."

In April, a Highways England spokesperson said they hoped to complete the work within a month, but were unable to confirm a completion time at that time.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, including the recent severe weather, this work at Stockbridge has unfortunately been slightly delayed,” a spokesman said at the time.

Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum said: "Everyone will be delighted that the A27 can now be crossed again in safety.

"It was too long a wait but hopefully it will be worth it. "

Well wishers left star struck as royal couple greet them

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE MAYOR of Chichester, Cllr Martyn Bell and Mrs Susan Pyper, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, greeted the royal couple in West Street.

Their Royal Highnesses, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, then walked along the road and greeted visitors who lined the streets with flags and banners.

The mayor said: "It was a great honour and so fitting that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should start their first official visit to Sussex in Chichester.

"They spent a lot of time in West Street where the crowds were thrilled and gave

them a marvellous reception. It made me feel so proud of our city and of our royal couple."

Chichester's MP, Gillian Keegan, said it was very special to be the first city to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on an official visit. She said: "I hope their Royal Highnesses enjoyed their time in Chichester visiting just one of the many historic gems of our city, before going onto open the University of Chichester’s fantastic new Technology Park, soon to be home to the next generation of engineers, scientists and mathematicians."

The chairman of Chichester District Council, Cllr Elizabeth Hamilton, greeted the royal couple as they entered Ede's House. Afterwards, she told the

The girls both shouted Meghan's name as she was talking to schoolchildren opposite. She turned around, walked over to the girls. accepting the bouquets, and then rushed back to Harry to call him over.

Clemmie said: "We gave them some flowers which we got today especially for them."

Coco said: "We wrote notes on the flowers which said, Dear Harry and Meghan, I watched you on TV at your wedding and I loved your dress Meghan and I liked what you were wearing Harry.

"It was amazing to meet them It was the best day of my life. Even better than my birthday."

Clemmie added: "Meghan came over and asked which school did we go to and when Harry came over he asked what class we were missing and we said sewing. He asked if we did Latin and we said no, we did French."

Coco's mother, Zoe Hazelden, said: "It's been an absolutely incredible experience. I don't even mind them missing a morning of school, even their headmistresses didn't mind. I think it's a once in a lifetime experience and you have to take it."

Keen royal fan and Chichester Post reader, Zoe McManus, told the Post: "Harry came over and said he liked my hat. I told him I loved him and I was very proud of him. They were both so lovely and very friendly. They've definitely had a bigger turnout than for the Queen but they are our generation and we can connect to them."

Royals declare a huge interest in document

The full significance of the document was uncovered by Harvard University in the West Sussex Record Office, a service

run by West Sussex County Council which holds and protects the county’s archives, in April 2017.

Testing and authentication work on the document was completed in time for American Independence Day, July 4, 2018.

along with two books published by West Sussex County Council; Roots of America edited by Kim C Leslie - an anthology of documents relating to American history in the West Sussex Records Office in Chichester and Military Voices: West Sussex Veterans in the 20th Century - a product of the county’s history project.

Ede's House was built at the end of the 17th century for local maltster John Edes and his wife Hannah, it is now used for private and corporate events, as well as being open to the public for historical tours.

County Archivist Wendy Walker said: “It was a real privilege to meet the couple and to be able to show them this fascinating and very rare document.

"I explained how it was discovered and the work we have been undertaking for the last two years with Harvard University, the Library of Congress and the British Library.

"They both showed great interest in the Declaration and the American connection with the Duchess made it extra special.”

County Council Chairman Lionel Barnard added: “It was an honour to meet the Duke and Duchess today and wonderful to see them interacting so well with the large crowds who came to Chichester to warmly welcome them.

"I hope the Duke and Duchess enjoyed their visit as much as we did and hope they will both be back to see more of our vibrant county soon.”

Armchair, window and front row seats A CHICHESTER family celebrated the arrival of Meghan and Harry from the comfort of their armchairs.

The Leaver family bought their home in West Street just 18 months ago and were thrilled to hear the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be visiting Ede's House, right opposite their own home.

Tess and Richard Leaver were joined by their two daughters, Madeline, aged 22, and 21-yearold Alice.

Richard said: "We couldn't believe our luck when we heard where they were visiting.

Our neighbour was talking to us about how incredible it was going to be and we had front

row seats. It was just magical."

Tess added: "When the Queen came to Chichester we weren't as aware. From the moment we woke up today, we really knew. We saw police and the barriers out early.

"Everyone has been on such a high and really happy and all on a beautiful day like this."

Alice came home early from a visit to the Cotswolds especially to see the royal couple. She said: "I missed out on going to a concert to see them. It's really surreal. It's the only word I can think of using. it was right outside our window!"

Sister Madeline also said: "They have made such an effort and really engaged with everyone and it's just been really nice to see them."

Loo's refurb after 30 years

The toilets, situated near the library and Novium Museum, are well used, with almost 20,000 users between June 13 and August 20, 2018, averaging around 289 uses per day across the ladies, gents and disabled facilities.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors agreed to spend reserves of £65,000 (subject to approval by full council) to supplement the existing £80,000 from the asset replacement programme.

The original £80,000 was found to be insufficient to cover the additional drainage issues and substructure work.

Although there is no statutory requirement for local authorities to provide and operate public conveniences, the Vision for Chichester city includes an attractive, clean and welcoming environment and meets the equality act.

Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum said: "The disabled toilet is completely unfit for purpose.

Littlegreen Special School is forced to turn into academy GOVERNORS of Littlegreen Special School have gone against parents and staff's views and are pressing ahead with plans to turn it into an academy.

The interim executive board of governors for the Chichester school has announced it is to continue with plans to convert the school into an academy on January 1, 2019, despite opposition from parents and staff.

The decision came only 48 hours after a well-attended public meeting last Wednesday, where parents, staff and community members united in their opposition to the plans and called instead for the school to be reinspected by Ofsted.

Patrick Cummings, chairman of the board of governors, heard the concerns, but said the decision of the four appointed governors was democratic and refused to give his backing to the parents' demands.

Melanie Reid, whose son attends the school, said “I am now extremely

fearful for my son’s future and the boys in the care of the local authority who do not have a voice to speak out for them.”

Campaigners want the governors to request a full Ofsted inspection before the end of the year after the positive Ofsted monitoring visit in July, 2018.

Headteacher Pam Ridgwell was in post for eight weeks before the Ofsted inspection in November, 2017, judged the school to have serious weaknesses and subsequently issued it with an order to convert to an academy under The Solent Academies Trust.

The monitoring visit found that school leaders were taking effective actions towards the removal of the serious weaknesses designation.

Hayley Rose, parent campaigner, said: “The bottom line is we don’t want the boys disrupted. The boys are doing well, we had our monitoring inspection on July 1 and it was very, very positive.”

` Police reports OVER THE week of Monday, September 17, to Sunday, September 23, there were eight incidents of vehicle break-ins at beauty spots in the Chichester area.

Locations included Selhurst Park, Kingley Vale, Tinwood Lane, Downs Road, West Stoke, Goodwood, Stansted Park and Eartham.

A number of other crimes were also committed.

On Monday, September 17, in Blenheim Gardens, Chichester, a garage was broken into and fishing equipment was taken. Serial 0802 17/9.

In Florence Road, Chichester, the following day, police received a report that a vehicle was broken into around 5.30pm on September 16.

A laptop from under the seat was stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0287 18/9.

At Hillside, West Dean, Chichester, overnight on the Wednesday, an outbuilding was entered but nothing was taken. Serial 0056 19/9.

Also on Wednesday, September 19, in Chatsworth Road, Chichester, a dark blue 50cc moped was stolen from the back garden of a property.

In Cleveland Road, Chichester, on Friday, September 21, a property was entered when a thief broke a downstairs toilet window.

Playstation equipment was taken from the property. Serial 1494 21/9.

On Sunday, September 23, at The Meadows, Chichester, police received a report of a garage break-in where two adult bikes, two children bikes, a kayak and fishing equipment was stolen.

Theatre group takes public back to city's torturous times

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE WORLD première of The Hawkhurst Gang kidnap, torture and murder to the Priory Park 100 celebrations.

Chichester Community Theatre performed the play which was written specially by local playwright, Greg Mosse and directed by Westbourne resident, Roger Redfarn.

The Hawkhurst Gang is the second Chichester Community Theatre production that Paula has been in, she played the lead in The Exchange. She has also worked with Roger previously at Chichester Festival Theatre and has worked closely with Greg Mosse on a number of projects.

The company cast some local actors for the play which set in and around Chichester in the late 1740's, when a group of smugglers were tired and condemned for kidnap, torture and murder.

The husband and wife cast members, Paula Tinker and Gareth William, both professional actors, live at Slindon Common and met back in the 1970's when they were in the same theatre company. They have known and worked with Roger for many years in various productions.

The play was performed at the Guildhall in Priory Park, which at the time of the play, was used as the Assizes and where the smugglers' trial actually took place.

The smugglers were found guilty and executed in and around the city.

The play is still to be performed at the Weald and Downland museum in Singleton tomorrow at 3pm and 7pm and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are £12 or £10 for members.

She said: "The acting was good, so you felt completely involved. Particularly mentionable was a scene when the two men were getting drunk and then the second half, the trial, which originally took place in the Guildhall where we were sitting, really held your attention.

Close the borders, close the doors I am dismayed at Theresa May’s announcement that she would be effectively closing the borders to EU workers.

In 2017 I participated in a TV programme titled British Workers Wanted for Channel 4, which concentrated on Brexit and its implications on employment for my recruitment agency, Opus Loco.

In the programme you see that it was a real struggle for us to find British workers for our positions.

We were not recruiting for skilled labour, we were looking for kitchen porters, hospitality staff, trainee landscapers and warehouse workers. The prerequisite being that you wanted to work, other than that, we would teach you all the skills. We struggled to get the numbers required and if you watched the programme you would have seen the excuses Brits gave us as to why they couldn't work these jobs. We did get one British candidate, James, who rather than being the norm was the exception.

I was one of the many that voted Leave. In hindsight, do I believe I made the right decision?

Probably not. Do I feel I was misinformed? Most definitely. Was I aware of the long term implications for my business? Most definitely not.

Since the programme aired, recruiting for these roles amongst Brits and EU nationals hasn't got any easier - in fact the situation has grown gravely worse. We've scoured the whole of the south from Bristol to Bognor Regis and I presently have over 30 full time vacancies that I need to fill, with little to no hope of doing so. I run job adverts, advertise in the press and even write an article every week for

the local rag to generate interest, but it has proved fruitless. I’m genuinely worried for the future and my business.

I can understand all the people who voted Brexit citing that they want our country back under our control. We all have our own reasons for voting to Remain or Leave and to go into every reason would take too long.

I hate to be the person to say this but, Mrs May you’ve never run a company and you are not running our country. This decision will be detrimental to businesses who pay taxes that pay for our hospitals, schools etc. Close the borders and be prepared for businesses to close too.

Raising a cuppa and tucking into cakes raises cash for Macmillan

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across the community enjoyed coffee and cake as part of the annual fundraiser in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

THe popular Macmillan Coffee Morning returned this year and people across the area took part.

John Barber-Bacon is the owner of Sussex Barista in Barnham. He organised a coffee morning for the first time.

He said: "My dad died of cancer two years ago. Macmillan were very supportive when my dad was ill.

"Having a coffee morning when I own a coffee shop makes sense.

"It's important to raise money for Macmillan. I have been swept off my feet - I've been busier than ever."

Darryl Wulff is operations manager at Chichester Gymnastics Olympics Club.

THe firm works with several different companies, so Darryl decided to spread the event over a whole week in a bid to boost the fundraising.

He said: "We've never done it before.

We've got 500 people that we see weekly and of course their parents, too. It's a nice thing to do. As an organisation, we like to get involved in stuff."

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Morey has organised a Macmillan coffee morning at her home in Selsey and in the community every year since 2013.

THis year, she opened her home up once again with a cake sale, a raffle, tombola and a stall selling handmade items. Prizes were donated from local people and businesses in the area. She raised £752.63.

She said: "My father died of cancer and I have lost other friends and relatives and people I know. My aunt was also a great believer in Macmillan so we took over from what she used to do.

"It has grown over the years. We get people coming in from outside Selsey as well. We have lots of fun on the day. It's become quite a community event."

About 12 Hotham Park Heritage Trust members each baked a cake for their event last THursday.

Business for the chocolate cake, walnut and coffee cake, meringues and scones was brisk at the park's lodge in Bognor Regis last THursday.

A total of £314.35 was raised compared to £306 last year. Trust chairman Rosemary Warren said: "We have lost several members to cancer and we feel that, because of our age range, this is a suitable fundraising event to stage."

In Middleton, Alex Johns raised £939.68 in her usual event - with stalls as well as cakes - at the sports club last Wednesday.

She said: "It's a very good response for an event which last two hours. I've been helping Macmillan for a long time and the cakes were made by people who live in the area."

Felpham bake off and bric-a-brac event on Saturday. Millie Stimpson, nine, won the novelty cake prize for her indulgent chocolate confection.

Daryl Bowen organised a coffee morning at the Assembly Rooms in North Street, Chichester.

As well as a cake sale, there was live music provided by student group Clarinet Roulette and violinist David Ide and a stall selling vintage goods.

He said: "We had people bringing in donations of cakes.

"Lots of people I speak to don't know that this is up here. We wanted to do something for the community. We've got these amazing assembly rooms which have been designed for this purpose."

Pallant House Gallery also held an event again this year with a cake sale taking place inside the gallery.

Organiser Alison Davies, a Pallant House Gallery volunteer, said: "Pallant House Gallery has hosted a Macmillan coffee morning for eight years, supported by the gallery’s sponsor, De’Longhi, which kindly supplies free coffee.

"THis year’s theme was the suffrage centenary, following the gallery’s summer exhibition on Virginia Woolf featuring 80 female artists.

"Run by volunteers, the event is always an important diary date, with staff and volunteers contributing delicious cakes and raffle prizes."

Duke unveils park's restored plaque

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE DUKE of Richmond unveiled the fully restored plaque at the gates of Priory Park on Sunday.

The occasion was marked to signify 100 years which have passed since the park was gifted by his great, great grandfather to the people of Chichester.

It also marked the end of a ten-day celebratory festival organised by the Friends of Priory Park in which many events were scheduled.

Over the course of the Priory Park 100 celebrations, entertainment included the opening ceremony, Sealed Knot exercises and re-enactments, astronomy in the park with the South Downs Planetarium, a teddy bears picnic, cricket match and a drumhead service.

On Saturday, the Sussex County cricket team brought both male and female first team players to take on The Duke’s XI. Around 1,500 people arrived to watch the free-to-attend match, and none were left disappointed with the action after the Duke of Richmond’s XI scored a narrow victory over Sussex.

The Duke of Richmond said: "It was a pleasure to watch the

match as part of the Priory Park Centenary celebrations and I am extremely grateful to Sussex County Cricket Club for taking part and to those who worked so hard to make this historic occasion happen. The match was hugely entertaining and we were treated to some great cricket, made especially exciting as the home side won with the very last ball."

On Sunday, the drumhead service was held in the park with hundreds of guests attending.

On September 30, 1918, the park was gifted to the city and last Sunday, the drumhead service, where the regimental drums became the altar, marked the precise anniversary.

There was a two-minute silence which was signalled by the firing of a field gun, after which 35 children from Parklands Primary School each read out ten names of the 350 local men who died on active service.

After each ten, a pigeon was released, carrying a message of peace – the first from the loft of Her Majesty the Queen, followed by a mass release of 200 more birds.

Chichester's mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, said: "The Priory Park 100 programme was marvellous. It involved so many people from our community including very many

children.

"The activities chosen were so appropriate - many very entertaining such as the cricket match and many very moving and memorable - particularly the drumhead service, 100-strong choir and the carrier pigeon release by schoolchildren. In all, a very fitting tribute marking the 7th Duke of Richmond’s wonderful gift 100 years ago."

Friends of Priory Park chairman Richard Plowman said: "I have been delighted by the many wonderful remarks made about Priory Park 100. I would like to thank all those involved but particularly the many hours of marshalling and help from Rotary and the Friends of Priory Park.

"I am still in state of disbelief that all went so well and how Chichester community came together in Priory Park which is very special to us all and I hope in another 100 years we shall still being enjoying Chichester’s own village green in the heart of our city."

Man charged with grooming A MAN from Bosham has gone to prison after admitting attempts to groom young girls to engage in sexual activity online.

Tony Small, 37, a smallholder, of Main Road, Bosham, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, having pleaded guilty on August 31 to ten offences - three were offences of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a girl aged 13 to 15, two were offences of attempting to cause a girl aged 13 to 15 to watch a sexual act, and five were offences of attempting to cause a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

THe charges relate to three separate people, none of whom come from Sussex.

He will be a registered sex offender for ten years and was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to last for ten years, severely restricting his access to children and computers.

Small was arrested on THursday, July 26, as a result of information passed to Sussex Police by members of the public.

Detective Constable Gaye Moore, of Sussex Police, said: "Small thought he was talking to teenage girls, to whom he sent indecent videos of himself, but in fact he was in touch with three adults who had set up false profiles online.

THey contacted officers who went to the address and arrested him.

"We rely upon the assistance of the public in preventing and detecting crime. Working with the community is a vital factor in our gaining information.

` Owner identified POLICE have identified the owner of a dog which attacked a child in Aldwick last summer.

THe woman, who does not live in Sussex, has been spoken to by Devon and Cornwall Police and made to sign a dog control order.

THis means she may face further action for failing to remove dog faeces, not keeping a dog on a lead and not putting and keeping a dog on a lead when told to by an authorised officer. She also faces further restrictions in owning a dog.

THe three-year-old boy was bitten on the chest on August 6 in Kings Parade, outside Marine Park Gardens. He has fully recovered.

SIX ARTISTS will be playing their original music in Bognor Regis this weekend.

THe performers will be performing their own material on Sunday to bring the spirit of Brighton's electic music scene to the town.

THe free event, called A Tribute to Ourselves, will start at 3.30pm at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road.

It will begin with an acoustic set from young local artist Scarlet Cooper and end with THe Speak, from Brighton.

THe concept has come from Bognor Regis musician Jeremy Hayward, who has long experience of live music around

the world through his involvement with THe Cure.

He said: "Bognor has always been very stagnant and difficult if you are trying to play original music.

"THe owner of the upcoming music venue, THe Hothampton Arms, Danny Barret, has been very positive and supportive of this idea."

Artists playing at the event will be Scarlet Cooper, David Farnan, Luke Elder, Ruby and THe Acoustic Stone with Mike Fry on guitar, THe Boy Wonders and THe Speak, with original member of THe Cure, Matthieu Hartley.

` Witness appeal SUSSEX POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in a Chichester collision.

Officers received a report of a collision between a Ford Fiesta and a Suzuki motorbike at 2.10pm on Friday, September 28, on the A259 at the junction with Hillier Garden Centre.

The motorcyclist, a man in his early 20s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

If anyone witnessed the collision, saw either of vehicles involved beforehand or captured the incident on dash cam footage please report IT online or call 101, quoting Operation Dolebury.

` Midhurst parking RESIDENTS and visitors in Midhurst will benefit from a £55,000 investment to improve the North Street car park.

Chichester District Council’s cabinet agreed to the investment at its meeting on Tuesday. The money will be spent on resurfacing and relining the car park.

The 177-space car park serves a large majority of the town’s visitors on a daily basis and is often the first area that visitors to the town see.

“The North Street car park is in need of improvement to ensure that it continues to look attractive and the council is maintaining it as an asset, whilst meeting health and safety requirements.” said Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of the district council.

Next steps for the city's major project

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS at Chichester District Council have approved the next major steps for the biggest project in the city of Chichester for a generation.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors agreed to go out to tender to find a development partner for the Southern Gateway project. They also approved the development brief, a detailed document outlining all the objectives which developers will need to meet as part of the process.

The development brief has been prepared with involvement from partners West Sussex County Council and Homes England and other city stakeholders including Chichester City Council and Chichester BID (Business Improvement District).

“This is a hugely exciting point in the project because we will shortly start the journey to find a development partner who will help us to make this major regeneration project a reality,” said Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council. “Since the Southern Gateway Masterplan was adopted last year, a lot of important background work has taken place ready for us to start the formal process of going out to the market and the project team is now looking forward to hearing from prospective developers.

“In summer a ‘soft market test’ took place – an informal exercise to see how developers might respond to the opportunity – and we were very pleased

with the positive reaction we received."

We used the feedback to further improve the brief so that it is absolutely clear what it is that we asking of a potential developer.

“Because of the interest expressed back in summer, I am confident that we will find a high quality partner as eager as we are to deliver this project for the benefit of the community.”

The project’s aim is to stimulate economic growth and create new, better paid jobs by transforming this largely brownfield area.

The 30-acre site near the canal, will be turned into a vibrant and attractive new quarter featuring an estimated: 365 new homes, 20,600 square metres of new commercial space including business and retail space and leisure and tourism facilities;, improved transport links and a focus on cycling, walking and public, transport, plus public space enhancements and landscaping.

The Southern Gateway is predicted to create more than 1,400 jobs and protect at least 200 existing jobs, as well as improve air quality in the centre of the city.

This year the project received £5 million of funding from the Local Enterprise Partnership, Coast to Capital and is also being promoted by the Department of International Trade as part of its overseas programme.

The process of finding a development partner will take six months and the council anticipates announcing its selection in June 2019.

The next stage will be for the development partner to develop their ideas and show them to the public next summer.

f The district council wants to reduce plastics

A plastic plan COUNCILLORS have agreed to continue their work to remove single-use plastics from council premises and encourage plastic-free initiatives across the district.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors approved a single use plastics action plan to phase out the items from its premises and create a campaign of awareness.

The plan will see identification and removal of any single-use plastics that can be easily removed or substituted from council buildings by December this year.

Cllr John Connor, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "This is an issue of increasing concern to our residents. From the litter in the street to micro-plastics in our seas, support is growing for making some simple changes.

"You may well have noticed a new drinking fountain in the entrance to this building which has a bottle refilling point as well. This will allow us to sign up to the

refill scheme, allowing users to see where they can fill their bottles for free, nearby, rather than buy a single-use one."

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for residents services, fully endorsed the campaign. "There is a very considerable and significant overlap of this campaign and the Against Litter campaign, which I'm leading," he said.

"I will undertake, to ensure, that our Against Litter Campaign works closely with you, Cllr Connor, on our joint campaign."

Following the meeting, Cllr Adrian Moss said: "It is imperative that our council is seen to be leading the way in our approach to the use of single-use plastics. We are the custodians of this district and country for future generations and if we allow high levels of plastic to contaminate our land and get into to the water we will permanently damage the environment."

Students reach out to Africa CHILDREN in Kenya are finding learning easier thanks to students and staff at Chichester College.

A team of 30 volunteers from the college spent two weeks of their summer holiday helping to improve a school in Nakuru they raised £80,000 to build with the African Adventures Foundation.

THey created a library filled with bright and inspiring pictures and messages, started work on building a new kitchen, renovated more classrooms - and spent time teaching and working with the pupils.

THe visit to the Walk Centre Primary School was the first since it opened in August last year. It was an emotional experience for Lisa Humphries, director of student services and pastoral support at the college.

She has led the fundraising and was on her

eighth visit to the area.

"It was amazing to return to the centre, a year after we attended the opening," she said.

"To see it in action, so many young children benefiting from the school and accessing the education they, like all children, should be able to have. It was very emotional. We've worked so hard and there's still so much to do."

As well as the time spent at the school, the team from Chichester were taught Swahili and learned more about life in Kenya. THis included a visit to the Hilton slum area, where many of the school's children live.

Lisa added: "THat was a particularly tough day for our volunteers. Many of the children live in and around the rubbish dump in the Hilton slums. To experience their reality is hard, but it drives home why we do what we do to support the Walk Centre."

` Community funds TIME is running out for community groups in the Post area to upload their ideas for crowdfunded projects in the latest round of county council funding.

THousands of pounds is being made available to worthwhile projects through THe West Sussex Crowd.

THe crowdfunding platform gives the public, businesses and West Sussex County Council the chance to pledge money to groups in need of funds.

Project creators have until next Monday to upload their ideas and begin fundraising to qualify for the next round of county council community initiative funding. Among those to have benefited from the initiative is the Regis School of Music in Bognor Regis.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "I would encourage more groups to take full advantages of this opportunity by uploading their ideas to THe Crowd and start fundraising by October 8 to make sure they are eligible for our funding."

FIRE crews in Chichester and Bognor Regis are urgently appealing for more car donations to help them train.

A number of stations in West Sussex are in need of extra vehicles and the fire and rescue service relies heavily on donations from the public. THe cars allow crews to practise their training to deal with road traffic collisions.

THey cut the vehicles open to carry out rescue operations. It is crucial they have the skill and knowledge they need.

Father sees script by son filmed for comedy f Bet Chapman, left, receives her award

Society members beat the weather JUDGE Suzanne Holroyd has praised flower lovers in Bognor Regis for their hard-working efforts.

Ms Holroyd was pleased with the good display by members of the town's horticultural society in their annual autumn show in spite of the difficult growing season caused by the season's weather.

She was especially amazed at the number of entries in the fuschia section.

THe show attracted 44 entries at Bersted Jubilee Hall in North Bersted last week.

PROUD father Colin Crouch watched some of his scriptwriter son's work being put into action in Aldwick this week.

Aldwick resident Mr Crouch joined the set of the BBC comedy, Don't Forget The Driver, on the parish's coast on Wednesday as the cast and crew continued their work around Bognor Regis for the next few days.

THe six-part series, destined for BBC2, was written jointly by Tim Crouch, one of four children of Mr Crouch, and who all attended Bognor Regis Community College.

THis was fewer than last year but still enough to give Ms Holroyd a difficult decision choosing the winners.

She selected the best in show winner as David Donovan, for his display of runner beans.

THe best pot plant award was won

by Pat Alderton and the best dahlia award was claimed by Bet Chapman.

THe society's next meeting takes place at 7.30pm on October 25 at the hall, off Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted. Melissa Hauffe will be giving a talk on sweet peas. New members are always welcome.

Mr Crouch said: "It's lovely to have Tim's work being filmed here. It really is about Bognor Regis.

"Tim feels very much for Bognor Regis and he sees it in some ways as a microcosm of the national identity situation. THe series is very much Bognor Regis-based and the town features quite a lot in it."

As reported, filming began in the town last Monday and has featured locations near the pier, around the bandstand and in Station Road.

THe series' star, Toby Jones, joined

in with an idea by Tim Crouch, an established playwright, to bring Don't Forget The Driver to television.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the series on TV," said Mr Crouch. "Toby Jones is a lovely actor.

"His character in it has a touch of the character he played in The Detectorists, which has very much built a cult following, and I think Don't Forget The Driver will be delightful."

Tim Crouch's plays have won awards and toured around the UK and internationally to acclaim.

New look Opus Loco is just the job, says Sarah When Sarah Duke saw her recruitment agency Opus Loco trending on social media giant Twitter she knew a hit TV show featuring the business had made a huge impact.

Now Sarah is confident that once again the company can be in the spotlight thanks to a classy office refurbishment along with a new, fresh approach boosted by a rebrand.

Sarah, along with colleagues Oksana Simconok and Gaynor Heath, were filmed for a fly-onthe-wall Channel 4 documentary called British Workers Wanted, which revealed young people were more interested in being YouTube stars than working.

And the show proved so popular that a review in the Daily Telegraph noted: "Sarah and Gaynor were immensely likable, terrifically funny characters – chain-smoking and hard-working but also not afraid to dish out a bloody good rollicking to anyone who crossed them. It was impossible not to enjoy their company. They would be an excellent addition to Gogglebox."

Fast forward to today and Sarah has overseen the finishing touches to the new-look Opus Loco, which has been helped hugely by joining forces with London agency CRS Group.

Sarah, who was stopped by viewers for selfies after the show was screened, explains: "We enjoyed making the programme and it helped put us and Bognor Regis on the map. Sleep easy with home remedies and habits I CANNOT stress enough how important sleep is for your health. I have many clients who come to my clinics with a variety of different ailments, and so many times when you dig deep and look into the root cause of what’s going on…the answer is not enough sleep!

Without the correct amount of sleep, your hormones cannot regulate, your immune system becomes weak, and your brain cannot think clearly. It increases your risk of certain types of cancers, and your chances of developing coronary heart disease and/or having a stroke are increased.

You libido can suffer, your fertility decreases, you can gain weight easier, your risk of diabetes increases; you can become more accident-prone and you age quicker. THere is nothing positive about not sleeping properly.

A good night’s sleep can improve your learning, memory, decision-making and even your creativity. It can even help you to live longer, fuller and happier. If you want to improve your performance levels in all areas, whether you are an athlete, a university student, own your own business, a charity worker or a stay at home parent, there is one simple way to improve this… by getting enough sleep.

If you sleep well, it can help you can stay clear of depression, lower your stress levels

with good sleep practices and habits.

However, for some, that’s not enough. You could try the following remedies to see if they help:

Heavens above! Pope's 'reviving wine' is on offer Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com LIDL did I know that Richard Bampfield’s renowned French wine tour had resurfaced as we all embrace the cooler climes of October.

Two white wines in particular seemed to typify French vinification and I thus selected a 2016 Lamarthe Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc priced at £5.99 and a Picpoul de Pinet priced at a pound extra.

THe Loire wine was decidedly light and refreshing and had citrus and elderflower flavours to the fore and would complement beautifully a fish and chip supper.

THe 2017 Mascavinae Picpoul de Pinet proved also to be a good buy with gooseberry and citrus fruit pervading this Picpoul added to nettle-like herbal hints and a wine that would be a great pair to salmon dishes.

THe red wines on offer really whetted my taste buds and I noted that for £6.49 I was able to procure a 2016 Domaine de Sareval Valréas Côtes Du Rhône Villages - allegedly Valréas wines restored the health of the newly-elected Pope John XXII in 1317!

THis particular example is a wellcrafted medium-bodied red with juicy red berry fruit and is silky smooth and eminently quaffable and would be great with a lamb hotpot!

For 50p further expended, the 2017 Clos Des Batuts Cahors based on the Malbec grape and, from one of France’s

oldest wine regions which is undergoing a renaissance of sorts, is full of black berries, dark fruit and spice with a long, dry finish.

My third selection was a 2016 George’s Badriou Moulin à Vent, a top 'Cru' Beaujolais, one of my favourites with red cherry characters more like a Pinot Noir

Vibrant red fruit along with bright acidity and a dry finish characterise this wine and it is one to pair with mushroom risotto.

Method

INGREDIENTS • 1.4L chicken or vegetable stock, divided • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 500g portobello mushrooms, thinly sliced • 500g button mushrooms, thinly sliced • 2 shallots, diced • 340g Arborio or risotto rice • 125ml dry white wine • 3 tablespoons finely chopped chives • 60g butter • 5 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

price of £11.99, but worth every penny with spicy dark plums and rich black berries on the nose and a creamy palate.

Such ripe fruit - go and grab one while stocks last and one that would ideally pair with a steak and kidney pie - how French, n est-ce pas? A un de ces jours!

1. In a saucepan, warm the stock over low heat.

2. Warm 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

Stir in the mushrooms, and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Remove mushrooms and their liquid, and set aside.

3. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to frying pan, and stir in the shallots.

Cook 1 minute. Add rice, stirring to coat with oil, about 2 minutes. When the rice has taken on a pale, golden colour, pour in wine, stirring constantly until the wine is fully absorbed. Add 125ml stock to the rice, and stir until the it is absorbed.

Continue adding

stock 125ml at a time, stirring continuously, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is al dente, about 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Remove from heat, and stir in mushrooms with their liquid, butter, chives and parmesan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

INGREDIENTS • 3 leaves gelatine • 250ml whole milk • 250ml double cream • 1 vanilla pod • 50g caster sugar • 300g fresh strawberries • Icing sugar • Mint leaves, optional

Panna Cotta with Strawberries

Method 1. To make panna cotta soak the gelatine leaves in cold water until soft. Pour the cream and double cream into a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod in half and scrape out the seeds and add to the pan. Add the sugar.

2. Heat the mixture slowly, stirring all the time until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring just to a simmer.

3. Remove the cream from the heat. Remove the gelatine from the water and squeeze well. Add to the saucepan and stir well until dissolved.

4. Pour the mixture into four ramekins, small cups or cleaned plastic yogurt pots. Chill for at least 4 hours.

5. To turn out dip each dish briefly in boiling water and invert onto plates. Scatter the fresh strawberries over and around and then sprinkle lightly with icing sugar.

Decorate with mint leaves if desired.

Community News & Views RURAL crime was discussed at a meeting between Sussex Police's Chief Constable, Giles York, and members of two major rural organisations.

Mr York talked to representatives of the National Farmers' Union and the CLA landowners' group about the continuing challenge of tackling rural crime.

He spoke about the resources available to his officres, the force's approach to crime which takes place in the countryside and the new rural policing strategy.

THose present at the annual liasion meeting also talked about solutions to specific types of rural crime.

NFU south east regional director William White said: "We hadn't seen the chief constable so upbeat about tackling rural crime for a number of years.

"He described the government's decision to allow increased precept funding as 'a game changer'. THis means net growth of 200 officers over the next four years.

"THe Sussex Police rural crime strategy is different from those of other forces in that it seeks to embed a knowledge of rural crime in every officer on the force. Sussex comprises two rural counties, so the new strategy appears to make good sense."

Farmer and landowner representatives of both organisations were present at the meeting at Chaites Farm, Bolney, thanks to sheep and arable farmer Rob Seward.

Robin Edwards, the CLA's south east regional director, said: "THe CLA welcomes the introduction of the rural policing strategy and the commitment by the chief constable to give specific rural and wildlife training to more than 800 officers over four years."

THe meeting included a discussion about livestock worrying and incursions by travellors. Updates about agricultural policy and the economic outlook were also given to the police.

PEOPLE are being invited to enjoy a meal and listen to a talk about one of the world's most famous warships to raise money for charity.

THe event will delve into the fascinating history of the Tudor warship, the Mary Rose, while enjoying a three-course dinner in aid of children’s charity, the NSPCC. Its Chichester and city district branch will be hosting the dinner at the Chichester Park Hotel on October 25 with special guest speaker Robert Lapraik, of the Mary Rose Trust.

Mr Lapraik, the trust’s deputy chief executive at the time, oversaw the design and construction of the Mary Rose Museum, which fully revealed the dry ship in the summer of 2016.

He will share a brief history of the iconic ship’s sinking, discovery and excavation, which gives a fascinating insight into life 500 years ago.

It is a fantastic opportunity to hear from a true expert about the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet, while raising valuable funds for the NSPCC. Kate Hershkowitz, the NSPCC’s community fundraising manager for Sussex, said: “THank you to everyone who has already booked tickets to this dinner, not only is it going to be great opportunity to come together for a fabulous cause but also to learn some fascinating history.

“Every penny raised will help the charity fight for every childhood, rebuild children's lives and help prevent child abuse from ruining anymore.”

Guests are invited to arrive at 7pm, for a 7.30pm start. Tickets are available at a cost of £45 and they will remain on sale until October 8.

A GROUP of fundraisers took part in a sponsored swim, raising almost £700 for charity.

THe event raised £676.61 for the Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Sue Wiltshire is vicechairman of the Medmerry Park Leaseholders Association (MPLA) in Earnley.

She said: " With most of our committee and a few holidaymakers we had a great day all for a good cause.

"We do quite a bit of fundraising for good causes.

"We feel that its good for our community, brings people together - both leaseholders and holidaymakers - which makes for a fun and enjoyable weekend for everyone and all for worthwhile causes.

"It was a brilliant day. THe weather was fantastic.

"Some of the children were being sponsored by parents at £1 a length and really enjoyed themselves.

"It's very important, and I feel that when people actually

take part in something it makes them also feel proud to have put something back into worthwhile causes. You never know when you might need them."

THe group has several events that take place each year to raise money for charities including the RNLI and the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

THe next event organised by the MPLA takes place on Saturday, October 27, and is called the Dash to Splash, in support of the RNLI. Sue said it was an easy decision when picking which charity to support when organising the swim.

"One of our committee members came up with the suggestion," she said.

"We understand that there are lots of charities around for cancer, diabeties, heart etc but some of the smaller ones provide just as important services but they miss out.

"I think the following day a lady was airlifted off West Wittering beach."

A VOLUNTEER for a charity supporting disabled people has stepped down after 30 years.

Andy Heath, pictured above, as spent time volunteering for THe Point, a Chichester-based charity that provides a muchneeded leisure activities centre for disabled adults.

THe Point's manager, Clare Goff, said: "Andy has been a hero. For 30 years he has worked behind the scenes to support the centre and its

members, selflessly giving up huge amounts of time to ensure that the young people who depend on the service get the best experience possible from attending the centre.

"He steps down as chairman of the charity and we will be forever grateful for his dedication, kindness and service."

Sir, So, we have one irresponsible woman that allows her vicious dog to attack a three-year-old child, and Cllr Hitchins' answer is to call for more notices to ban dogs going into Marine Park Gardens (Bognor Regis Post, September 21). Just what is the logic behind this ridiculous and costly suggestion?

Regardless of the size or prominence of signs, it will make no difference in preventing out of control dogs attacking children or anyone else, so why does Cllr Hitchins think that a blanket ban on all dog owners walking their well-controlled pets on a lead through the gardens will solve the problem?

Marine Park Gardens are a superb example of what Bognor Regis can achieve and it is unacceptable that some members of the community should be excluded from them, especially when these same people are contributing via their council tax for the upkeep and maintenance of them.

Equally, what sort of message does it send to visitors to the town when they find that they are banned from one of the nicest parts simply because they have decided to bring their family pet on holiday with them?

It is perhaps also worth noting that when I have walked through the gardens, seldom have I failed to see discarded beer cans, bottles or fast food packaging. Perhaps Cllr Hitchins should extend his campaign for more signs to also include a warning to people not to throw away their litter and empty beer cans.

Other councils, for example Bournemouth and Reading, have similar gardens (only larger) and do not have any problems with people walking their dogs in them. In fact, both councils actually encourage it, so why is it that Bognor Regis and, specifically, Arun District Council, always manage to find a problem? THe bylaw used by Arun to ban dogs was introduced around 2009, but the exclusion of dogs from these gardens probably dates back to the 1930s in the good old days of park keepers, manicured lawns and keep off the grass signs.

Times have now changed and this ridiculous ban is now hopelessly out of date and does not reflect modern 21st century standards or thinking. It is time that these councillors applied their time into motivating Arun District Council into dragging itself into the 21st century and replacing the dog ban signs with permanent dogs on lead signs and for a change taking a positive 'can do' attitude, but as the famously over-used saying goes "Don't hold your breath".

Sir, While I fully support traffic-calming measures on certain roads, (you mention London Road, September 28), why do councils always go for speed humps?

Just as effective, visually attractive and less uncomfortable to all vehicle passengers are the chicanes used on the continent.

A simple kerb, a large planter and an evergreen shrub are all that are required.

Surely any cost difference must be minimal.

Chichester Council House and Assembly Rooms

By Portia Tremlett, museum assistant at the Novium Museum THE COUNCIL House and Assembly Rooms are some of the most recognisable buildings in Chichester city centre.

The Council House refers to a series of connected buildings dating from at least 1731, the Assembly Rooms being just one of those buildings, but is still the name that is most commonly used for the complex. Currently housing the city council offices, as well as being used by many different community organisations, these buildings have a fascinating history.

James Spershott, a Chichester carpenter born in 1710, described the first council chamber as being the first floor of an old timber framed Market House, very similar to the Market Hall from Titchfield, which can be seen at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.

Although meeting minutes from 1685 onwards survive, little is known about this first council. The building was situated on North Street, near the building known as the Buttermarket, or Market House (now Bills).

However, this building was described as ‘low’

and was not seen as fit for purpose. In 1728, the decision was made to build a new Market House.

After multiple designs were drawn up and submitted, the council eventually built the current complex in North Street, which was completed in 1731 and designed by Roger Morris. The largest contributor to the funds was the 2nd Duke of Richmond.

In 1723, while digging a cellar during construction of the buildings, a large Purbeck marble stone was found with a Latin inscription. This was later confirmed to be a dedication stone, usually found in the walls of a Roman temple. It is thought that a temple dedicated to Neptune and Minerva may have been on this site in the Roman period. This can now be seen in the outside wall of the Assembly Rooms.

It is the offices above this arcaded façade that have been used by the city council since their construction; it is known as the Council Chamber. This room has, among its magnificent architectural pieces, a painting of William Cawley, famed in Chichester for

building the Cawley Almshouses in Broyle Road, as well as his involvement in the Civil War, leading to his signing of the death warrant of Charles I in 1649.

There are also two stones whose inscriptions describe how the land was bought and who was responsible for funding the erection of the building. These stones were expensed solely by the Duke of Richmond, ‘that the remembrance of the benefaction may stand recorded for all posterity’.

Due to the popularity at the time with ‘assemblies’, where people could organise public occasions such as dancing, it was decided by the Chichester Corporation in 1781 to erect what is now known as the Assembly

Room behind the Council Chamber, using designs by James Wyatt. The Ante Room was then added to connect the two buildings.

The Council House and buildings have had a number of very notable guests. In 1789, the then Prime Minister, William Pitt, came to the Assembly Room while visiting the Duke of Richmond; in 1810 Joseph Lancaster gave a lecture on his educational beliefs which is said to have inspired the foundation of the Lancastrian School; and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited in both 1956 and 1986.

Chi open season account in style PostSport with a ten-try thriller against rivals CHICHESTER secured their first league win of the season in the grandest style on Saturday as they edged out local rivals in a ten-try thriller.

THe club claimed maximum points with a bonus point victory over border rivals Havant to end a four-game losing streak that opened their season.

With a game at home to fellow strugglers and league newcomers Dartfordians this Saturday, Chi players and staff will be hopeful they’ve reached a turning point in the season.

Chichester made eight changes to the team that lost to Camberley 18-33 in monsoon conditions a week earlier and the refreshed line-up made good use of the much improved weather conditions.

With a strong home crowd willing them on, the home side stole the initiative straight out of the traps to take an early 7-0 lead through Callum Gibson after just two minutes.

THat lead was stretched to 10-0 in the first quarter before a Chi sin-binning saw Havant

edge back into the game with a penalty only for the home side to reassert their control with another converted try.

Havant got back into the game with a try of their own to make it 17-8.

But Chichester bagged decisive scores either side of half-time to open up a 27-13 lead only for Havant to roar back to level the scores at 27 with 25 minutes to play.

Nerves were now frayed on the pitch and on the sidelines as both sides saw a golden opportunity to clinch their first win of the season.

An Ed Bowden try put Chi seven ahead and, while Havant struck back, crucially they missed the conversion to leave the home side ahead and Harry Seaman snatched the win with a final try.

THe tries were also flowing freely at Bognor, who romped to a 52-17 win at home to New Milton and District to record their biggest win of the season so far to take them to fourth in the Hampshire Premier.

ONE HUNDRED years of Priory Park access for the public was celebrated in style as Sussex’s stars helped produce a final ball T20 thriller.

Fittingly, to mark the centenary of the 7th Duke of Richmond gifting Priory Park to the people of Chichester, it was THe Duke’s XI who eventually prevailed against the Sussex CCC with two runs from the final ball.

While Sussex called upon current stars, including the Lukes Wright and Wells, alongside coach and former Aussie test bowler Jason Gillespie, THe Duke’s XI comprised keen amateurs from various levels of the sport as well as some Sussex stars to bolster their ranks.

To level the playing field for THe Duke’s XI, they had 12 players take to the field in accordance to rules dating back to 1727 which state they did not apply to THe Duke’s team.

With star line-ups and beautiful sunshine, around 1,500 people were drawn in to watch the action free of charge and they were royally entertained from the start with Sussex getting off to a flier thanks to Luke Wells, 43 from 18

balls, and Harry Finch, 57 from 29 balls.

THe Duke’s XI, however ,were not daunted

by Sussex’s total of 239-6 with Southern Vipers’ Georgia Adams and Luke Wright, who bludgeoned 85 from just 27 balls, keeping the run rate within reach.

As wickets began to fall in the chase, the Duke XI’s amateur players chipped in with vital contributions with senior Andy Barnes, 26 runs from 24 balls, and team captain and the current Duke’s son, Charlie March, 16 from 15 balls.

Despite losing Sussex speed sensation Jofra Archer for a golden duck and Gillespie falling on the penultimate ball with victory in their sights, Goodwood CC captain James Mayne held his nerve to scramble a couple from the 120th ball of the innings to claim victory.

Richard Geffen, event co-organiser and Goodwood CC chairman, said: “THere was a real community feel. It is not often one gets the opportunity to see international and county players for free in such a historic setting.”

RUNNING: Tone Zone Runners members competed in five races in the past week.

THe Felpham-based club saw its name feature in the finishers across a wide area. Some fine personal performances were achieved among the various events.

First to take part was Byron Kearns, who recorded a personal best of 18:36 minutes to finish sixth overall in a 5k race at Worthing Rowing Club in midweek.

Luke Simmonds travelled to the Home Counties to take on the Pyjamathon near Walton-on-THames. THankfully, he didn't have to run in his pyjamas despite the name of the race. He was another Tone Zone member to set a personal best as he finished the marathon in 3 hours and 44 minutes.

Over at Windsor Castle, the Windsor Half Marathon took place for its 36th year.

THe 13.1 mile course takes runners through Windsor Great Park, passing the Royal Lodge, chapel and school before it approaches the Queen Elizabeth II statue and Windsor Castle for the finish line.

Four club members flew the blue and orange flag along the regal route.

Sam Miles was the first home for the club, recording a time of two hours and three minutes. Ellie Matthews, who only started running seven months ago, crossed the line with Lesley Ward as they both finished in under the 2:15 mark for a great time for the course.

Sarah Spurr finished in 2:27.

On the same day, the Barns Green Half Marathon also marked its 36th year of being held.

Jessica THomson completed the undulating course in 1:36 to record another personal best for the year.

Michael Manwell, who has already competed in numerous half marathons this year, finished shortly after THomson in 1:41.

Finishing off the THomson sandwich was Stuart THomson. THe ever-consistent runner crossed the line in 2:30.

Closer to home, at the Ageas Bowl 10k near Southampton, the club was represented by Mark Green.

THe race started and finished at the international cricket ground. Green ran a really consistent race to grab himself a personal best for the distance of 43:39.

Cup win puts gloss on great week for Chi after 7-0 romp

Lions keep up at top of table THE LIONS stayed in the hunt with the early Premier Division pacesetters after holding their nerve in a topsy-turvy fixture away at mid-table Uckfield.

Starting with all the confidence of a team who were undefeated in eight leagues games to start the season, Pagham bossed the early stages on Saturday with George Gaskin tapping home on 25 minutes from a dangerous centre by Jack Rowe-Hurst.

THe Lions refused to sit on their lead and pushed for more goals which duly arrived within sight of halftime when Rowe-Hurst turned from provider to scorer with a delicious piece of skill to pluck a deep ball out of the air before lobbing the Uckfield keeper from 18 yards.

But the visitors couldn’t hold on to their two goal advantage until half-time, conceding in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts hope.

Tempers flared on the halftime whistle and the Uckers would have to marshal the rest of their comeback without

manager Anthony Storey, who was banished to the stands.

Seven minutes into the second half and the home side were level when THe Lions could not relieve sustained pressure and Uckfield equalised despite claims for offside in the scramble.

Momentum was now well and truly with the home side and another untidy goal saw Uckfield take the lead for the first time on 64 minutes.

Not for the first time this season, Pagham showed they have plenty of resilience and levelled the game again five minutes later when Howard Neighbour nodded home a Johan van Driel corner to set up a barnstorming finish with both teams pushing for the three points.

And it was to be Pagham’s day when another corner was turned home by Callum Overton on 80 minutes despite Uckfield claims it had not crossed the line.

THe Lions can go ten undefeated when they play Langney Wanderers at home tomorrow.

CHICHESTER knocked out a battling Hassocks this week to claim their place in the second round of the Parafix Susex Senior Challenge Cup. Chi had already dispatched the visitors once this season with a 6-0 hammering just two months ago - but it was a much tighter affair under the lights at Oaklands Park on Tuesday.

Scott Jones continued his recent scoring streak to give Chi the lead before Hassocks equalised but the tie was decided before halftime with a stunning long-range drive.

On Saturday, Chi worked out the frustration of losing their unbeaten start in the top-ofthe-table clash seven days earlier by hitting Lingfield for seven.

Kaleem Haitham quickly showed there would be no hangover from Saltdean with the opener before Jones, Matt Axell and Rob Hutchings all got on the scoresheet before half-time.

THere was no let-up in the second half with Jones again, substitute Gicu Iordache and a Lingfield own goal sealing the emphatic win that leaves this weekend’s opponents Little Common with much to ponder.

Sids' long cup journey in vain

A 114-MILE round trip is about as arduous as they come in the Sussex Senior Cup and it proved a bridge too far for Sidlesham on Tuesday night.

THe Premier Division quality of hosts Eastbourne Town shone through in the closing stages of the first round.

For 78 minutes, the Division One side matched their hosts before three late goals, including two in stoppage time, gave Eastbourne a margin of victory that was harsh on the battling Sids.

Sidlesham were on the right end of late drama against East Sussex opponents last weekend

when three goals in nine second-half minutes ended Hailsham Town’s unbeaten start to the season. THe Sids got out in front early courtesy of a Ben Mepham goal only to be pegged back shortly after half-time.

Goals from Joe Grommett and Tommy LeeSmith within the last ten minutes looked to have sealed it for the home side but they needed the cushion of a fourth, and a second from Grommett, after Hailsham pulled one back.

Another tough test lies ahead for Sidlesham this weekend as they travel back across the county to take on free-scoring Bexhill.

Selsey will be in the hat for the next round after a battling come-from-behind win against Premier Division Arundel.

THe visitors looked like they would make their extra class count with a stunning opener ten minutes before the break. But the Seals regrouped and deservedly equalised just before the hour mark when Tom Jefkins confidently dispatched his penalty. THe home side continued to push for a winner and were rewarded in the last-minute by Dan Bassil.

Bassil was also on target at the weekend in a six-goal thriller at Bexhill United. His opener was quickly doubled within 60 seconds by Remi Coates as Selsey threatened to run away with the game only for Bexhill to pull one back – all within the first 15 minutes.

A calm finish from Callum Dowdell reasserted the two-goal cushion but the visitors could not hold out and a disputed last minute penalty meant the spoils were shared.

Selsey face a daunting weekend trip to Vardeanians who are yet to taste defeat in the league this season. More early goals and more spoils were shared at Walton Lane where Bosham were held by Upper Beeding in the Division Two clash on Saturday. THe Robins trailed after 11 minutes but were level again within two as Alex Barnes evened the scores.

THe club remain fourth from bottom after picking up only their fourth point of the season and travel to mid-table Littlehampton United tomorrow.

CHICHESTER City Ladies preserved their proud unbeaten run on the road with another victory built on solid defence.

THe visitors, with the second best defence in the Southern Premier Division having conceded less than a goal a game, kept another clean sheet away to Loughborough Foxes Women, requiring a solitary goal from Molly Clark to claim all three points.

THe win leaves Chi in the running at the top of the table ahead of a three-week break in the fixture list.

THey will hope to kick on from where they left off when they take their 100 per cent away record to Queens Park Rangers Ladies on Sunday, October 21.

Win number four on the road this season

was a hard-earned victory following a tight first-half with Gemma Simmonds, one of three changes to the line-up after the defeat at home to Coventry a fortnight earlier, going close for the visitors with a deft chip in an entertaining first half. Clark also fired a severe warning shot to the hosts of her threat when she hit the bar.

Chi burst out the blocks in the second half and edged their noses in front within two minutes of the restart when Clark tapped home a Jade Widdows’ cross for her fifth of the season.

THe hosts were unable to build much momentum towards a comeback with Clark on the break the most likely source of a second goal which never materialised but was not needed.

Rocks show heart to bounce back from FA Cup disaster Next Game

TONBRIDGE ANGELS (A) October 13

BOGNOR brushed off FA Cup heartache with two contrasting performances of resolution and ability to harden their promotion challenger credentials.

THe Rocks’ players helped to banish some of the crushing disappointment of losing to lower-league Sudbury in the FA Cup qualifying rounds with two encouraging performances to maintain their undefeated start to the league season.

Saturday saw Bognor battle back from two down at half-time to salvage a point and make it five away draws on the spin before they unleashed a second 8-0 hammering of visitors to Nyewood Lane already this season on Tuesday.

Manager Jack Pearce told the Post he had been delighted with the players’ response following a half-time rollocking at Sudbury.

He said: “I was delighted with the reaction after the disappointing first half at Sudbury.

We were totally dominant in the second half of that game.

“THat’s what makes football such a wonderful game. You know who’s going to be on top but it all depends who takes their chances.

“Unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of that against Sudbury and it’s a disaster for the club in terms of financial impact but we dust ourselves down and we go again."

Saturday saw a similarly sluggish start from

the Rocks in their first-ever meeting with Potters Bar Town and Bognor trailed to two first half set-pieces - conceding cheaply from a corner after 11 minutes and a direct freekick a minute before the break.

Dan Smith halved the deficit four minutes after the restart, drilling home after pouncing on a loose pass from the hosts, before captain Harvey Whyte completed the comeback in the 78th minute with a delicious curling strike after cutting in from the wing.

Despite failing to win on the road in the league so far this season, Pearce has no worries about the club’s form away from Nyewood Lane.

He said: “I’m delighted with the away form.

We’re unbeaten and we’ve been competitive every game and in most, if there was going to be a winner, it looked like it would come from us.”

THere’s certainly nothing wrong with the Rocks' home form as Tuesday night’s 8-0 victory against Burgess Hill means they’ve now lashed home 25 goals at home in just five games.

Tommy Scutt bagged a second-half hat-trick as part of a blitz which saw six goals in the final half hour.

THe defeat could be Burgess Hill manager Ian Chapman’s last game in charge after he offered his resignation after the game and has been placed on a short leave of absence.

Injuries cause squad concerns THE ROCKS will make use of their enforced ten-day break from league and cup action to try and bolster their injury-hit squad.

Manager Jack Pearce told the Post he would look to bring in a centre-half and possibly a forward after three key players picked up injuries in the past two league games.

Saturday’s scheduled game against Corinthian Casuals has been postponed because of the south-west London club’s continuing presence in the FA Cup. Keaton Wood limped out of Saturday’s draw at Potters Bar in the first half with an ankle injury. Further first-half knocks to Dan Smith and Corey Heath on Tuesday night mean the Rocks' squad is stretched to breaking point.

Pearce said: “Everyone knows our squad is very small but we have got ten days to try and add to it. THat is going to be very difficult.

"We know it’s not easy to attract quality players to our neck of the woods at this stage of the season. THe problems were there for all to see last year but we just need to work hard and see what happens.”

As well as losing three key players, Pearce is also worried their absence means his side has lost three good physical players who are likely to be hard to replace.

SO WE are out of the FA Cup against a side lower down the pyramid than us.

I, along with everyone else, was very disappointed we didn’t progress to take on Haringey Borough away in the next round. We didn’t really get off to a good start in the home game against AFC Sudbury as we could only muster a 1-1 draw with Harvey Whyte netting our goal.

THis meant a replay that following Tuesday. I couldn’t make it unfortunately because of work commitments but I was so thoroughly gripped to Lee Roberts and Peter Hood’s Rocks Radio commentary that it was almost like being there anyway.

Listening in from the office was great and, with the wonders of technology, all on my phone. I managed to catch the last 20 or so minutes of the second half and then the extra time proceedings following that. It sounded like we were cruising at 2-1 up and the likelier to score but then a silly free kick was given away and suddenly we were drawing 2-2.

Bognor then conceded in extra time to send AFC Sudbury through to the next round. Fair play to them. THey obviously turned up and we didn’t across the two matches and they took their chances - something we were criticised for not doing last season.

But we still have other cups (Sussex Senior, FA Trophy, Velocity Trophy) to contend with and our league matches as well so a lot of games still to get through this season.

We made the long trip up to the Pekex Stadium to take on Potters Bar Town next. A team founded in the 1960s that clearly had a long way to go off the pitch. THe ground was poor (I have seen better at county league level) and, apparently, they offered to play the game at Nyewood Lane.

But that would have meant we needed to play five away fixtures later on in the year,

so, obviously, we didn’t agree terms.

THis was one of the poorest first halves I have seen this season. We let in two goals from set pieces, a corner kick headed in and a free kick from outside the box.

But a re-energised team came out in the second half and you could see the difference when Mason Walsh came on. He’s gaining a good understanding with Joe Tomlinson on the left hand flank.

Dan Smith netted the first on 49 minutes following a mix up in defence and then Whyte’s goal later on was sublime. We deserved the point in the end but it was a shame we didn’t play like that in the first 45 minutes.

I am just worried slightly that we are drawing a lot away and can’t see games out - but I am sure this will change as the season progresses.

It’s a different story at Nyewood Lane as we continue to score goals for fun. Burgess Hill Town were our latest victims, succumbing to an 8-0 drubbing in front of 433 fans this past Tuesday night.

THis win moved us up to second in the table! Who would have thought we would be in this position during pre-season - I certainly didn’t.

Stand out performances for me were Tommy Scutt (scoring a hat-trick, pictured above), Tommy Block (I am a big fan), and Doug Tuck, who were all on form. But players like Bradley Lethbridge, Calvin Davies and Jimmy Muitt also shone.

Not to mention Dan Lincoln getting a clean sheet which was vital after the Potters Bar result.

It is rather worrying, though, we have another injury to contend with as Corey Heath turned his ankle on the turf and had to be carried off during this game.

With Heath and Keaton Wood on the sidelines, it looks like our favourite utility man Block will be needed in defence.
