More conflict for Vélo South

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE controversy is arising ahead of the Vélo South bike ride this Sunday with protests, bad weather, legal battles and support cuts.

On Wednesday, Vélo South confirmed on their Facebook page that a yellow weather warning which has been issued

meant they are monitoring the situation.

According to the Met Office website it says: "During Sunday there is the potential for a deep area of low pressure to develop and track over the UK bringing a spell of very strong winds and heavy rain.

"At this stage developments are very uncertain but there is a small chance of disruptive winds developing with parts of England and Wales currently looking

most at risk."

CSM Active, organisers of the event, have told participants: "As things stand, the event is still going ahead but we will continue to monitor the situation closely as the weather forecast becomes more certain."

Meanwhile, members of the Stop Vélo South group have confirmed they were arranging peaceful protests along the route.

Member, Chris Mathews, said: "We are planning two large protests along the route. We have been liaising with the police, so they know of our plans and will keep us safe and secure.

"Why are we doing it? Well, CSM Active (the profit-making company owned by PR company, Chime) have arranged with West Sussex County Council to close a 100 mile Lycra Loop for the race.

Planning permission was originally granted in 2016 for the homes but councillors debated outstanding issues such as cycle access, appearance, layout, scale and landscaping at the planning meeting on Wednesday.

THe application site lies to the east of the city and is bordered by Stane Street to the south and Madgwick Lane to the north.

THe proposal included pedestrian and cycle access, allotments and landscaping.

Westhampnett Parish Council said they were in favour of the allotments and would take overall control of these, owning the land and managing and maintaining them.

Officer Naomi Langford confirmed people could be moving in by spring next year.

She said: "Based on the build rates as far as I know, the first occupations are likely to be probably spring 2019 so we are looking at between 60 and 90

properties occupied within that first year."

Cllr Richard Plowman had reservations regarding the noise. He said: "My remarks are really relating to the noise aspects of it. I'd like to ask, in terms of construction, are we looking at some form of noise reduction? THe other thing that worries me slightly is although there is landscaping there, we know from experience that wood trees don't actually have a profound effect on the noise.

"From the report, environmental health, (from a noise point of view) have said there will be, on certain days, (we know them as Goodwood days) the acoustic noise will affect these people.

Noise is a strange thing, people react very differently to noise. It says here that prospective buyers should be made aware of the noise."

Ms Langford responded: "Noise has been very carefully considered throughout the outline application and the current application. THere was a detailed acoustic assessment provided. Environmental health raised no objections. THere is an informative already that advises the developers to make property owners aware that there are these unrestricted noise events at Goodwood."

SUSSEX POLICE are on the hunt for a high value missing statue and the suspects who stole it from a Chichester gallery.

THe foot-high statue, a bronze sculpture of an ancient Greek soldier, was taken from Cloud Gallery in North Street, Chichester, around 1.30pm on THursday, September 13, by three suspects, all believed to be women.

One suspect - described as in her mid-20s, of large build, wearing sunglasses and a blouse - distracted a staff member while two other women, believed to be aged between 18 and 20, stole the sculpture and left the premises.

PC Tessa Heath said: “We are keen to trace and speak to the three suspects involved with this theft and return the statue to the rightful owner.

“THe women seized the opportunity to steal the statue, worth over £3,000, at a time when the gallery staff were busy with a delivery.

“Have you seen a statue resembling the one in the picture for sale recently?

“We would be keen to speak to anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area at this time.”

Record visitors this summer at museum From page one

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A RECORD number of visitors have been recorded at THe Novium Museum in Chichester this summer. THe increase this summer coincides with the Lego exhibition - Bricks Britannia: A History of Britain in Lego Bricks.

More than 13,750 people visited the museum in August – more than doubling the previous highest monthly attendance of 6,570 visitors in August, 2017.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “THis summer’s

Lego Brick exhibition has been extremely well received and it has been wonderful to see the museum consistently busy and buzzing with excitement. We would like to thank each and every person who supported the museum by visiting this summer.”

Bricks Britannia is an interactive Lego Brick exhibition that takes visitors through a journey of iconic moments in British history, from the Stone Age through to the 21st century.

Stephanie THorndyke, museum and TIC (Tourist Information Centre) manager, said: “We strive to be at the heart of our community and are delighted that so many people have enjoyed Bricks

Britannia to date. It has been a pleasure to offer an exhibition that combines entertainment and education, providing a creative and accessible approach to British history.”

A series of events organised to run alongside Bricks Britannia included a Brick Pit, enjoyed by over 450 young visitors over the course of nine days, a sold-out adult ‘Late Night LEGO Bricks’ evening, relaxed early openings and popular Make and Take sessions.

THe exhibition will remain open at THe Novium Museum until October 31.

Cubs get ready for supreme race - See page seven

"THis traps 140 households in their homes for up to nine hours, damages businesses large and small all across the county, vulnerable people can’t get carers through to them. It will cause huge traffic disruption on the day, across West Sussex and spilling over into surrounding counties. And this was done with no consultation."

In an open letter to residents, Chief Superintendent of Sussex Police, Jerry Westerman, said: "We recognise that there are mixed feelings about this event, with some people in support and some who object to the event.

We understand the strength of feeling that exists within the community and know that as a result, some people may wish to protest against it. " As reported in the Chichester Post, the campaign group, Stop Vélo South, has formally started a legal challenge against West Sussex County Council regarding road closure proposals for Vélo South.

In a statement, West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “Given there is a current legal process in place I can’t say too much at the moment but what I will say is I do really understand the strength of feeling this event has created.

“For some people, it has really challenged them and I do not underestimate their concerns. What I have also heard though, as I have made my way around the county, is people in full support of an event like this.

“West Sussex is changing and we have to accept that, for a long time now we have not been the very traditional rural county we once were.

THis event is seen by some as very unWest Sussex but it reflects modern day life and interests.

“After the event, we are planning, as previously promised, a wash-up event, where we want to hear the voices of everyone involved and their experiences. I hope, for everyone involved on Sunday, that we pull together as a county and welcome visitors and locals alike to enjoy a fantastic event in a peaceful and positive way.

“THat’s what we want to be known for as a county, one that is open to new ideas, events and initiatives.

A crowdfunding page has been set up for Loxwood Sports Club near Billingshurst. It states: "Loxwood Sports Club was approached by Vélo South, who offered a £200 donation to the youth football club to become an official pit-stop for Vélo South.

THe event required them to have 15 volunteers at the club, for six hours, to look after the pit-stop. Valuing their volunteers at £2.22/hour, well below minimum wage.

"Loxwood Youth Football Club have withdrawn their association with the Vélo South event, and therefore will not receive any payment from CSM Active Ltd for providing volunteers.

"Let's show Vélo South how much more we value our local clubs, especially those that value developing youth teams and give them the support they require."

` Police reports DURING the week of Monday September 3, to September 9, police received ten reports of vehicle breakins in the Chichester area. Locations include Goodwood Racecourse, Kingley Vale, Colworth Down and Stansted Forest.

A number of homes were also targeted.

In Homestead Road, Chichester, on Monday, September 3, two men in red tops were seen to break into a bike shed. Serial 1596 03/09 THe following day, police received a report a property in Charles Avenue, Chichester, was broken into between June 9 and September 4. Nothing of value was taken. Serial 0586 4/9.

In Florence Road, Chichester, on THursday, September 6, police received a report that overnight a conservatory was entered. Nothing was taken from the property. Serial 0413 6/9.

A garage was broken into in Cambrai Close, Bosham, on THursday, September 6, and gardening tools were stolen. Serial 0949 6/9.

A number of vehicle windows were smashed and a car was seen driving at speed away from the scene in Priors Leaze Lane on THursday, September 6. Serial 0088 6/9 and 1303 6/9 In Halnaker, Chichester, on Friday, September 7, two men entered the back of a property. THe suspects were confronted and made off. Nothing was stolen from the property. Serial 0650 7/9.

In Northchapel, Petworth, on Saturday, September 8, a garden was entered and garden equipment stolen. Serial 0378 8/9.

Police boost the tower campaign

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE SAVE Tangmere Tower campaign has received a £500 boost from Sussex Police.

THe campaign was set up to restore the Second World War control tower on Tangmere airfield.

Heritage Crime Officer, PSCO Daryl Holter, was able to secure the funding for the ‘Save Tangmere Tower’ group through the Police Property Act Fund.

THis is made up of money received by the police from the sale of found property and from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold.

PCSO Holter said: “I am really happy to help director Matt Gover-Wren and his team.

“THe Save Tangmere Tower campaign group is an entirely voluntary organisation, and they are using the funds to purchase a new steel front door and perimeter fence, all to help secure the site.”

THe control tower was part of RAF Tangmere which was a Royal Air Force station famous for its role in the Battle of Britain. THe tower was constructed in 1943 and in use on D-Day when the airfield was an important Fighter Command station.

THe tower was registered as a grade 2 listed building in 2011 and Cllr Matt Gover-Wren managed to get the tower on the ‘heritage at risk’ register in 2015.

Cllr Gover-Wren, who is also the

director of Save Tangmere Tower, said: “Working with Daryl has been brilliant.

He visited us on site and ran through a number of recommendations and general advice going forward. He helped us better understand some aspects of preventative work and connected us with our local policing team.

“I have been so thankful to Daryl for his continued support and helping us with this funding. It will enable us to better understand the building and to assess what future work it will need, ultimately allowing us to protect our Second World War heritage.”

Prices rise for staff parking A CAMPAIGN is underway in protest over staff parking price rises at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

THe campaign's website says: "I think there isn’t a person in this country who feels the latest pay deal we received was in anyway adequate and this was following a pay freeze for several years.

"Now, to add insult to this, our trust has decided to massively increase the cost for staff to park onsite, using the cloak of “being green” as a reason. THe alternative to parking onsite is a park and ride based in Fontwell - for many of us if we used this system would actually be travelling further every day."

Increases in parking for an employee on a band one salary of approximately £15,404 would see the tariff rise by 29 per cent from £11.67 to £15, whereas a member of staff on a band nine salary of around £79,415 would have to pay

up to 93 per cent more, from £23.33 per month to £45.

Director of estates and facilities, David Jones, said: “THere are nearly 10,000 people working in our three hospitals and our staff car parks have been oversubscribed for many years, leaving the large majority of staff having to park off-site or travel to work by other means.

“THese improvements require investment, which is being partly sourced by a change to the cost of staff parking permits, which in October will go up for the first time in 10 years.

“Paying more will never prove popular, but we have done our best to ensure the new charges are fair and compare favourably to other trusts and local authority car parking. Colleagues can also apply for on-street parking permits close to the hospitals or park for free just ten minutes away by foot.”

Charities join to form a coalition

Summer reading is success

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VOLUNTEERS who gave up their time over the summer were celebrated at a special event in Chichester on Tuesday.

THe Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme that encourages children to visit libraries and read books during the summer. It’s a great way of ensuring that children don’t suffer from the ‘summer holiday dip’ with their reading and that they go back to school in September enthused to read more.

Volunteers across Chichester met at the library in Tower Street where Mayor Martyn Bell congratulated them and

presented them with certificates.

THere were 41 volunteers who gave over 724 hours of their time over the summer.

Among the recipients were Emma Richards, who gave 12 hours, Joan Williams, who volunteered 36 hours and Vanessa Veale, who gave 31 hours.

Vanessa, who works at Kingsham Primary School, was joined by her daughter, Ayesha, 15, who gave 23 hours.

She said: "It's a really lovely scheme.

Children are really happy to join in and get rewards like stickers, wristbands and medals. THey enjoy taking their medals in to school.

"It's really good for them to get the bug and to keep reading. THe schools

encourage them to read through the Summer and gain things like house points which is a great incentive.

"Ayesha has dyslexia but has been coming to Chichester Library since she was really small. Reading has helped her with her dyslexia."

Cllr Bell said: "I think the statistics are amazing and the number of children who have been involved and the number of volunteers giving up so much time.

"Avoiding the summer dip, I think, is so important because children have the reading habits it's great to keep them reading. I was just amazed at the amount of time they have spent and their patience. I think they are marvellous for what they have done."

AN UNPRECEDENTED coalition has been formed to ensure homeless people across Bognor Regis and Chichester are not abandoned.

THe housing-related support and homelessness sector members have joined together to lobby and campaign against proposed cuts by West Sussex County Council.

THeir members include Stonepillow, which has services in Chichester and Bognor Regis, and the Bognor Housing Trust. THey have been joined by the likes of Saxon Weald housing group and Worthing Churches Homeless Projects.

THe Coalition of Providers group is being chaired by Hilary Bartle, chief executive of Stonepillow.

She said she was pleased by initial support given to its members after the recent news of the intended cut by the county council. But members were aware a lot of work was still to be done.

"On behalf of the coalition, I wish to say how encouraged we have been by the support from across the wider public and all political spectrums in voicing concerns and lobbying against the county council's proposals to cut all funding these essential services.

"We are reassured by the county council's latest announcements to now hold a full consultation. We are resolved to fully engage and work with the council during this process to protect housing-related support services across the county of West Sussex."

As reported, the county council proposed at the end of last month to

end all existing housing-related support contracts from next April. THese are given to providers like Stonepillow and the housing trust.

It also proposed a 75 per cent reduction to the local assistance network, which helps those across the county who are financially vulnerable.

A coalition spokesman said: "At a time of increasing levels of poverty, homelessness and with existing services experiencing both higher referral levels and increased complexity of cases, it seems inappropriate and short-sighted to consider the removal of services which provide a safety net to the most vulnerable across communities."

THe coalition's formation has already had an impact on the council, which is set to agree to consult and engage with the sector on its plans.

THese will feature future funding options for housing-related support and the assistance network.

Any final decisions have also been pushed back to December, 2018, from the original deadline of this month, and only after the consultation has finished.

THe coalition has welcomed these moves but is seeking confirmation that existing contracts will be extended in line with the new consultation period.

Its members also want it to be represented on the group which oversees the consultation and able to take part in all the relevant groups which will form the consultation to represent the complexity of some of its clients' needs.

A total of 17 shotguns and rifles are reported to have been stolen sometime between 9.30pm on Wednesday, August 15, and 1.30am on THursday, August 16, while the homeowners were away.

Included are a Blaser .338 Mag rifle, a Perazzi 12B shotgun and a 13B shotgun, all with their own distinguishable features.

A quantity of jewellery and tools, and two vehicles were also taken – the BMW was later recovered but the Ford Transit van, which has a white cab and a black flatbed, remains outstanding.

Detectives believe at least four suspects were involved in the burglary, but others may have

knowledge of the current location of the stolen items.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Jamie Carruthers, said: “THese firearms are all fully licensed and legally held by the owner.

However, they could prove lethal in the wrong hands, and for that reason we are determined to find them.

“We’re also keen to locate those responsible for the burglary – anyone with any information about the incident or the stolen items is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 355 of 16/08.”

Box kart race is supreme

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE UK'S largest box kart race is heading to Goodwood at the end of the month.

THe Supreme run by the West Sussex Scouts will see cubs, aged eight to ten and a half, racing their homemade karts around a figure of eight track.

THe largest number of children are set to run this year with 255 entrants from 12 counties and three countries - England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

THis year, the event has 42 teams from the entry opening date of March, 1 to just a sell-out in four weeks.

Organiser, Stephen Bell, from West Sussex County Scout Council, said: "Box karts are old school. Children used to use them on the streets in the 1960s and 1970s, racing down hills with old pram wheels and a bit of rope.

"Obviously, with health and safety, the cubs can't do this, especially not downhill. THis is a way of them doing it safely. THere are straw bales around the track, and the kart has to be constructed in a certain way with steel axles and steered by rope only.

"THe cubs race side by side in lanes and lose marks if they cross lanes when they are next to each other.

"It is compulsory for the driver of the box kart to wear a helmet, that is a rule.

It can be a BMX or bicycle helmet, and many of them choose to wear gloves as well.

"THe track is very well governed as well. THere is a minimum of two safety marshals out at any one time.

"THey race the 120m figure of eight track at a real speed. Some complete it in just 20 seconds, they really fly round it!"

For the third year running, Hot Rod champion, Lee Pepper, and his car and trophies will be making an appearance at the event.

THere are 12 heats for each team to score points in and the winners go on to to the shoot-out. THe top 16 get reduced to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

THe whole event is sponsored by local businesses and Stephen said without them and Woods Travel, which had been a huge help, the event would struggle.

He added: "We are really excited about this years event and next year we hope to see Scotland join in, too, and make it even bigger."

f Visitors to 2017's Comic Con

City's comic festival cancelled after promises of bigger return MEANWHILE...CHICHESTER Comic Con was due back for its second year at Chichester College this month.

THe show promised to be bigger than last year, with more exhibitors tempting everyone to attend on September 29.

However, just 13 days before the event, the event advertised on Facebook was cancelled.

Pedal power to help raise funds for assistance dogs

` Midhurst land sold CHICHESTER District Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee agreed on Wednesday that the council’s cabinet members were right to approve the sale of land in Bepton Road, Midhurst to a care home developer.

THe decision had been called in for review, following concerns raised by people in Midhurst.

“THe Overview and Scrutiny Committee has looked into the matters raised by the public very carefully, and they upheld the cabinet’s decision ,” says a Chichester District Council spokesperson.

“THe council has extensively marketed the site over the past three years and has considered a range of offers for uses, including a food store, other retail options, residential property, sheltered housing, and care home facilities.

It also had originally intended to sell the land to a developer who was going develop food store, but this fell through due to the economic challenges faced by the food retail sector.

“Legally, the council has a duty to achieve best value for any disposal of land, and these decisions rest with the cabinet. THe consultation process with residents and businesses happens when a planning application is submitted for the site.”

Following a competitive bidding process, the council’s cabinet decided to sell the land to developers who want to build a care home for the town, which has the potential to create in the region of 60 new jobs in the area.

After two successful cycling events in 2016 and 2017, Pedal For Paws South is back and will take place on Sunday, September 30, from the charity’s Southern Training Centre in Heyshott, near Midhurst.

“I decided to take part in Canine Partners’ Pedal For Paws cycle because it's a fantastic charity to support, the dogs do amazing work and really do change the lives of the people they are partnered with,” says Julie Graham, who took part in Pedal For Paws 2016 in the south.

“Don’t worry if you’ve not done any training as there is a shorter route and a longer route, so take whichever one you fancy and just give it a go!”

Dozens of participants are expected to take part in the event, which aims to raise vital funds for the charity which trains assistance dogs to transform the lives of disabled people, boosting their confidence and independence.

Last year, over 100 pedallers took to the streets and this year Canine Partners are hoping for even more.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

Kerenza Holzman, from Bognor Regis is encouraging people to take part in the event to raise money for the charity that gave her independence back.

After routine surgery left her with post traumatic stress disorder leading to chronic fatigue, Kerenza eventually needed a wheelchair. She was matched with her canine partner Whisky in June, 2012.

“I’ve had Whisky for six years and he’s really changed my life as before him I was quite depressed, I didn’t go out a lot and I didn’t work so I spent a lot of time indoors and life was really hard,” said Kerenza.

“I’ve now made new friends, met loads of new people and I feel like I have a life again.”

“I don’t feel like a disabled person who is useless anymore, I feel like I have a purpose and Whisky has given me back my independence.”

THe fun cycle event includes a choice of two routes, which are adapted to suit all abilities from beginners to experienced riders.

Tickets cost £20 for adults, £10 for

under 16s and £15 per rider for a group of ten or more adults.

Registration opens from 8am, with races starting at 9am for the 52 mile

route and 9.30am for the 29 mile route.

Students have designs on future as they begin to use hi-tech building THESE are the first views of the new dream factory in Bognor Regis.

THe £35m engineering and digital technology park at the town’s campus of the University of Chichester is starting to be filled with students.

THe building is nationally significant – with creative equipment as good as any in southern England on which to create films, soundtracks and animation and an engineering course among just six in the country which meets a global standard.

THose creative students who are the first to benefit from the facilities are eager to start as soon as the installation is completed. Many were on a foundation course at the university last year.

THey will be able to write, film, produce and edit their own movie within the next year in facilities at the Upper Bognor Road site equal to the best industry standards.

Catherine Mander, 25, of Tamworth, said: “THe facilities here are incredible. I can’t believe them. I’m so excited to get on with the course. THe promise of this building was good enough for me to sign up for it.”

Fellow student William Dixon, 19, from THorpe-le-Soken, said: “Being here is a dream come true. THe best thing is going to be going into creative work having used state-of-the-art equipment, which is as good as it would be in London.”

THat equipment includes a sound studio capable of hosting an 80-piece orchestra and controlled by a 48-channel world class mixing desk, pictured middle right.

Mike Holley, the university’s head of creative and digital technologies, said:

“THe studio is one of just three of this size in the south of England. THe others are Air Studio and Abbey Road Studios.

“It is 270sq m and three storeys high and we’ve already had interest in using it from industry sources.”

THere is also the special effects technology, the 75sq m green space studio able to be used with backdrops from around the world, animation equipment good enough to tempt two experts from big screen blockbusters like Amazing Spiderman and Inception and Interstellar to join, nine editing suites and a computeraided design suite around its four floors.

“THis is not just about the regeneration of Bognor Regis. It’s about all of the south coast and bringing people to the worldclass facilities on their doorstep,” said Mr Holley.

About 45 students will be in place by next month as the department builds up to just over 200 on ten courses.

For Professor Seamus Higson, the university’s deputy vice-chancellor, the building is the result of three years of hard work.

“When I came here, this was just a muddy field full of brambles. Now, it’s reality and it’s been created to an amazing standard,” he said.

“We are launching 30-plus science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) courses here. I believe that’s the largest single launch of STEM subjects in this country for 50 years.

“We have brought in a conceive, design, implement and operate method of studying

which came out of two universities – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one in Sweden.

“We are one of only six universities in the UK with that accreditation. THe others include UCL in London and Queen’s University in Belfast. THat’s the league we are now in.”

Leading the work to build the department from scratch is the head of engineering, Professor Stuart Harmer.

He said: “THis is a university without a history of engineering courses and it will take time to build them up but we have gone for quality over quantity.

“THe courses are very significant. If you lived in this area and wanted to study engineering, you had to go to Brighton or Portsmouth.

“We have designed the courses so the students work in teams as they will when they start work.

“We are unique in that 25 per cent of their work each year will be on a project.

Most universities only do that in their final year.”

THe top-quality equipment includes tensile testing machine capable of subjecting materials to as much force as ten tons, 3D printers, CNC milling machines, grinders, polishers and microscopes in a range of labs and testing facilities.

THe initial 50 engineering students will include those on masters degree and PhD courses.

` Goodwood season AS THE season begins to draw to a close, Goodwood Racecourse is preparing for its final fixture of the year, the Harvest, Hops and Horseracing-themed Season Finale on Sunday, October 14.

MP's visit highlights UK aid

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER’S MP, Gillian Keegan, has returned from her visit to Tanzania, which highlighted the important role UK aid plays in lifting people out of poverty.

THe United Republic of Tanzania continues to host large numbers of refugees but through programme visits to Nduta Refugee Camp, meetings with relevant stakeholders and interactions with the children and young people themselves it will highlight positive aid stories and demonstrate the high impact and value for money that is delivered when aid is invested in human development.

THe MP, who is also a co-chairman of the All Party parliamentary group for United Nations global goals for sustainable development, was joined on

her visit by Amelia Whitworth, policy and advocacy manager at Plan International UK, Gwynneth Wong, country director at Plan International Tanzania, THeodora Clarke, chief executive at Coalition for Global Prosperity, Labour MP Jess Phillips and Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran.

Mrs Keegan visited the camp which was first established in December, 1996, in response to the crisis taking place at the time in Burundi.

However, new unrest in Burundi during 2015 caused a sudden influx of refugees into Tanzania. Nearby Nyarugusu camp initially received these refugees but became overwhelmed.

THe facilities – including the provision of shelter, medical care, education, water and food – were planned to cater for 55,000 people. THese services are now being stretched and as such, conditions are rapidly deteriorating.

Mrs Keegan said: "THere was a touch of normality with a highly contested football match with many of the young people supporting Manchester City and my home team, Liverpool. A poignant reminder of the power of sport.

"Clearly, a long-term solution is required as nobody would want to continue to live in a refugee camp.

"Aid can be a strategic driver to reduce corruption whilst creating economic opportunities for individuals and businesses.

"Misspent aid ultimately harms the world’s poorest the most, and continued scrutiny of aid is vital."

After her return, at Prime Minister's Question Time, Mrs Keegan asked Prime Minister THeresa May: "I have recently returned from Africa, where I visited a refugee camp in Tanzania, witnessing the transformative impact of UK aid in protecting women from sexual violence

and giving children access to education.

With the UN General Assembly fast approaching, will the Prime Minister outline what preparations she has made for the global compact on refugees?"

Mrs May said: "Yes, we are looking at this. We are not just looking at what has been proposed for the global compact for refugees. We have actually been part of the discussions about what should be in that global compact.

"THis partly reflects one of the speeches I gave when I was at UNGA in 2016, shortly after I became Prime Minister, about the need to look internationally at how we deal with migration and refugees.

"I want to see a better ability to differentiate between illegal economic migrants and refugees, because I think by doing that we will be able to ensure that we are providing the support necessary for refugees."

I had another column written, but sadly I had some very upsetting news. THis week, I wish to dedicate my column to my late great brother- in- law who sadly passed away this week. When you lose someone close, it brings a lot of things into perspective. It’s amazing how you worry over the small things and then you lose someone close and what you thought was important isn’t anymore. My sister and her husband were one of life’s success stories; they met on the internet and fell in love. THey had truly found their soul mates, and it was beautiful to witness such a loving partnership. THeir love was transatlantic, he was a Brooklyn New Yorker and she a London Lass, but nothing held them back, not distance that’s for sure. She emigrated to the USA to be with him and for 16 years they ran a very successful Realty company. I can only imagine her grief, as I’ve yet to meet my soul mate, (I’m ever hopeful). After all the condolences and visitors paying their respects, I would think it is the silence you dread. THe inability to have the person you love most in the world not be by your side, giving an opinion, advice or simply eating together. After the funeral everyone goes back to their lives and you are left picking up the pieces of the rest of yours. Life really is too short and

we all take it for granted till such a time as when it is brought back into focus and something suddenly happens that reminds you. So, I’m going to remind all those I’ve loved or love that they have been or are precious to me because you really have no idea what is around the corner and how much time you have left on this planet, and raise a glass to a man who made my sister incredibly happy, sadly gone too soon but never forgotten.

Folk festival is underway CENTRAL Bognor Regis has come alive with music this week.

THe sixth Southdowns Folk Festival is taking over the town centre. Scores of musicians and singers are performing to indoor and outdoor audiences.

THe festival began last night with a show by TRADarr and continues today, tomorrow and Sunday. Many of the performances take place in the Regis Centre but others are in a marquee on the Place St Maur, in the High Street and locations such as the Regis School of Music, the RAFA Club and Tao Bar. THe headliners are Merry Hell and O’Hooley & Tidow tonight, charttopping Steve Harley and his acoustic trio tomorrow and Dervish on Sunday.

Also taking place among the crammed

programme is the Southdowns Ukulele Festival, with a special concert at 2pm today, the Seaside ‘Big Sing’, free music workshops, the Sussex Young Folk Competition, dancing and giant festival markets. Workshops are being held as well. Events are ticketed or free.

THe Making THeatre Gaining Skills is performing Let’s Go Fishing as part of the event.

Roger Nash, the folk festival’s chairman and founder, said: “It’s like doing a large jigsaw puzzle. One or two issues have arisen but we’ve overcome those and the event’s come together very well.

“THere’s been a lot of reaction on social media and people are really excited by some of the headliners we have like Steve Harley and Dervish."

Pensions pressure SEVERAL pension campaigners from the Bognor Regis and Chichester area lobbied national politicians to press their case for fairer treatment. Members of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) joined other south coast groups at the Liberal Democrat party conference in Brighton at the weekend.

Some of them were briefed by Lib Dem MP Stephen Lloyd (Eastbourne) about the latest position in their fight against having their state pension age raised twice in the past decade to 66 without what they claim was sufficient notice.

Mr Lloyd told them: "My office in Westminster continues to liaise with the parliamentary ombudsman. THey confirmed last week their inquiry into the Department for Work and Pensions

"Sir Vince Cable has publicly committed the Lib Dems to supporting whatever recommendations the ombudsman finally comes up with.

"It's essential the Waspi members around the country put as much pressure as possible on all politicans, to do the same. It will be very, very hard for the government to refuse."

He said campaigners needed to carry on to and gain more support to ensure their momentum became unstoppable.

Other women born in the 1950s who want to join the campaign should go to its next meeting from 3-5pm next Tuesday at the Jubilee Hall off Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

` Roller rink plans A ROLLER rink is among the potential uses for an open space on Bognor Regis seafront.

Arun District Council has applied to itself to allow a change of use for the Place St Maur des Fosses to enable it to be used for a range of community events.

Sloane & Brown, the council's planning consultants, lists the rink as one of the potential further uses of the space between Belmont Street and THe Esplanade.

Also listed are low-key festivals and music events, marquees and big top events, craft markets, food, drink and alcohol outlets, a base for sports events and activities and charity fundraising events.

A statement by Sloane & Brown with the application says: "THe events would generally be seasonal and would be for limited periods of time.

"THe use of the space will be strictly controlled by the Arun District Council via the events procedure or street trading rules, and the configuration, timing and layout of events will be managed.

"Timing of events could be controlled by a suitably worded planning condition, and could be 8am-10pm."

A site noise management plan would be prepared for relevant events and residents and neighbouring business made aware of the forthcoming activities.

THe plans also include temporary structures and buildings needed to enable the events to be held.

At present, the Place is used for events like the Southdowns Folk Festival, the Christmas ice rink, some markets and children's activities.

Helpers keep beaches clean VOLUNTEERS gave Selsey a spruce-up as they combed its pebbles for rubbish.

More than 50 people took part in the town's latest beach clean as part of a national campaign.

THey collected about 30 bags of plastic, metal, rubber and glass. THe items ranged from sweet wrappers to bits of wire and bicycle parts.

THe event, in Saturday's late summer sun, was a combined effort by three organisations.

Selsey energy consultant Tom Broughton was among those who took part. "It is pleasing how little rubbish there is here, especially after a busy season," he said. "It shows people care."

Among those who joined in were Andrew Brown, a Selsey town councillor and his twin daughters, Layla and Amelie, aged seven, who had been learning about sea conservation at school and were aware of pollution problems.

Pagham Sea Scouts were joined by three of their leaders, helpers, parents and county and district councillor Dawn Hall the previous evening for their beach clean.

THey collected 50 litres of waste like drinks bottles, lots of bottle lids and pieces of foam.

String, rope and machined wood were also found, along with a large fishing hook, a lot of cotton bud sticks and a few wet wipes.

Graham Salter, one of the Scouts' leaders, said: "However, it was felt that a lot of these items had been washed up on the beach rather than being left there."

Felpham Village Conservation Society also held one of its well-supported beach cleans.

A total of 74 people, aged from under two to more than 80, took part to collect six full bags.

Another 45 volunteers cleaned the Summerley and Beach estates foreshores.

Celebrating 25 years of veterinary practice f Macular Society group members

Research news interests group SIGHT-SAVING research was outlined to a record meeting of a Bognor Regis support group.

Macular Society fundraising manager Julie Edwards told the ten members at the charity's latest meeting about the progress being made to tackle macular degeneration.

Her updates included news about work to replace injections in affected eyes to preserve sight with drops and implants with the medicines inside to last for up to a year.

Scientists are also working on stem cell transplants from human skin to replace the part of the retina damaged by the condition and which destroys central vision.

ALPHAPET Veterinary Clinics has celebrated 25 years in business at its Bognor Regis branch.

Vets, nurses, receptionists and clients all gathered at the clinic in West Meads for a cake-cutting and photos to help mark the milestone achievement.

Emma Pink, manager at Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital in Sidlesham, also visited to receive a cheque for ÂŁ3,036.49 which was raised at the vets' annual dog fun show last month.

THe show is organised by lead nurse, Charlie Sampson, and this year celebrated its ninth year.

Richard said: "It's gone way better than we ever expected. It all comes down to all the people that started it off, my parents - my mother did a huge amount, Katie's mum did a huge amount and we owe an awful lot of people, an awful lot.

"It really makes a difference if you can get that personal touch. If we were in it just

for the money, we wouldn't be here. We do a whole lot of wildlife work here and it doesn’t earn money.

"We do it because we are vets. One of the things that has kept me going is that I am vehemently against the corporates and there is a huge future for us as an independent practice. It is the next 25 years."

THe West Meads branch opened its doors in an old video shop on September 12, 1993, and just a week later the Birdham branch opened in a former chicken shed.

New look Opus Loco is just the job, says Sarah When Sarah Duke saw her recruitment agency Opus Loco trending on social media giant Twitter she knew a hit TV show featuring the business had made a huge impact.

Now Sarah is confident that once again the company can be in the spotlight thanks to a classy office refurbishment along with a new, fresh approach boosted by a rebrand.

Sarah, along with colleagues Oksana Simconok and Gaynor Heath, were filmed for a fly-onthe-wall Channel 4 documentary called British Workers Wanted, which revealed young people were more interested in being YouTube stars than working.

And the show proved so popular that a review in the Daily Telegraph noted: "Sarah and Gaynor were immensely likable, terrifically funny characters – chain-smoking and hard-working but also not afraid to dish out a bloody good rollicking to anyone who crossed them. It was impossible not to enjoy their company. They would be an excellent addition to Gogglebox."

Fast forward to today and Sarah has overseen the finishing touches to the new-look Opus Loco, which has been helped hugely by joining forces with London agency CRS Group.

Sarah, who was stopped by viewers for selfies after the show was screened, explains: "We enjoyed making the programme and it helped put us and Bognor Regis on the map. Next, we wanted to revamp the office and generally overhaul the business to create a new, fresh impression with even more professionalism. Tree-t your body to daily moringa dose FOR THOSE of you who know me, or those who have been treated by me, you will know my love for superfoods as opposed to supplements. It's not to say that some supplements are not amazing, but personally I like to use the most natural products available, and that includes herbs and superfoods wherever possible.

THe reason for this is your body can utilise the substance better and have full absorption without taking too much energy away from the body. In my experience, this gives better sustained health and greater energy levels, which, lets face it we could all do with!

I am a big fan of many superfoods, and have used them for years now, alongside healthy

clean living with my clients, such as chlorella, spirulina, maca, matcha and green tea powders for super charging your smoothies.

But move over… there is a new supergreen in town! Packed with vitamin C, calcium, potassium and amino acids, this fine, velvety powder comes from the fast-growing moringa tree, natives to India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Moringa has incredible health benefits that could benefit so many of us.

THe bark, sap, roots, leaves, seeds and flowers of the moringa tree (sometimes referred to as the drumstick tree, the miracle tree, the ben oil tree, or the horseradish tree) have all been used to traditionally treat a variety of ailments including, inflammation, swelling, stomach

THe leaves contain more vitamin A than carrots, more calcium then milk, more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than oranges and more potassium than bananas, and the protein in the morning gives milk and eggs a run for their money!

Some superfoods can have, lets say, a less than pleasant taste, making it hard to palate, but this nourishing superfood is surprisingly pleasant to taste, which is why food companies have been quick to include the beneficial tree in pressed juices, nutrition bars, and other healthy snacks. It's also starting to be used in beauty products as it's fantastic at protecting hair against free radicals and keeps it clean and healthy.

As it contains such a good amount of protein, it also makes moringa very helpful in protecting the skin cells from damage as it has a hydrating and detoxifying element to it, which also means it's highly effective in curing skin infections and sores.

Moringa is also a natural sleep aid that

not only produces calming effects, but also helps us achieve longer, more restful sleep as it contains all eight essential amino acids, which stimulate sleep-inducing hormones, and this has to make you feel better the next day than medication/chemically generated sleeping pills!

Recent research has also concluded that moringa is a natural herbal medicine that is successful in treating fertility issues in both male and females. In fact, the best herbal treatment meant to cure infertility is Moringa Oleifera.

So how much can you have per day?

Obviously if you have specific issues, you may need to consult a professional for dosage, but on average I would recommend about half a teaspoon of moringa leaf powder per day in your smoothies or some coconut water. It is best taken with or around food and will be an amazing addition to your day!!

Even more vivid now than before in the colour that provides its name, Once a temporary home for those waiting to fight a war that did not come, Now a haven for wildlife as the hooting owl waits for the setting sun.

In this oasis of an urban jungle, surrounded by bricks and mortar, THe source of life and nature's roadway, its unrelenting stream provides a constant flow of water.

Where loved ones hold hands, the sound of children's laughter sometimes found, Sycamore, oak and tall conifer tower tall above the open playground.

THe seasons illustrated by crocuses, daffodils and bluebells in the spring, Give promise to the warm days to follow that summer will bring.

Trees bared of their brown leaves in those cool autumn days, A squirrel gathers its winter larder for the cold relentless phase.

To walk from street to road, both with village name, many tread the dry convenient path, Whilst dog owners chat, their unobserved wards enjoy their rolling a thick mud bath.

THe nearby neighbour boasts a pond, the home of ducks so proud, Whilst the early morning chorus competes with the deafening traffic, now so loud.

For the pensioner who sits on a park bench, a pause to remember what has been, A place of peace, time to reflect and absorb all the joys of Aldwick Green. (pictured below)

SPACE was at a premium when Donnington Gardening Club held its autumn show.

Extensive building work at the parish hall led to the produce and preserve classes being cancelled.

But the club's press officer, Laurence Holloway, said: "However, our show was a great success despite all that the weather had thrown at us over the last few months.

"THe fruit and vegetable classes were well supported and the flower classes were outstanding with their autumnal colours.

"In addition, there was a very colourful display of knitting, embroidery and photographs."

THe club would like to thank all the show's contributors, supporters and the general public who helped to make the event such a success.

THE UK’s eating disorder charity Beat is partnering with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to provide training and peer support for parents and carers of people with eating disorders.

In the UK, 1.25 million people have an eating disorder and these illnesses cost families an average of £32,672 a year in travel expenses, lost income and other costs.

Families can provide vital support for eating disorder sufferers and guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommend familybased therapy is usually the most effective method for first treating anorexia and bulimia in young people.

Beat will run a series of twoday workshops specifically designed to help people better understand eating disorders and develop practical skills for talking to someone who is suffering. THe workshops will take place throughout the autumn in Eastbourne,

WEST SUSSEX is still the best place to retire, offering pensioners the highest quality of life, according to the Prudential’s 2018 Retirement Quality of Life Index.

For a second year running, the county has been awarded the top spot of any in England and Wales.

A COUNTY COUNCIL service providing fun activities to disabled children across West Sussex has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Fun and Breaks (FAB) volunteers spend a couple of hours a week with a child, taking them out to an activity such as swimming or the park or having fun together at home, while giving their families a rest.

Following an inspection in June, the CQC has rated FAB ‘outstanding’ for effectiveness and leadership, and ‘good’ for safety, caring and responsiveness with an overall rating of ‘outstanding’.

THe report, which has just been published, noted that ‘wonderful relationships are being fostered between volunteers and families’ and that ‘children and young people are actively and positively encouraged and supported to engage in everyday activities and hobbies with the volunteers’.

Families described how the support they receive benefits their whole family and enables their child to have new opportunities, be more independent, be more confident, and develop social skills.

Children and young people were very positive about the volunteers and the relationships they had developed with them, describing them as their friends. Social care professionals were also extremely complimentary and positive about the service provided by Fun and Breaks to families.

Registered manager for the service, Doreen Bradbury, pictured below left, said: “We are delighted to have received an outstanding rating. It is a wonderful acknowledgement of all our volunteers do so willingly to enrich the lives of children in West Sussex.

"We would love to hear from anyone who feels that they could make a difference to a family who have a disabled child. We ensure that checks are made, provide training, carefully match each volunteer with a family local to them and provide ongoing support.”

Paul Marshall, county council cabinet member for children and young people, added: “THis is fantastic recognition for everyone involved in our outstanding Fun and Breaks service.

I hope that this encourages others to volunteer.”

Sir, Did my fellow travellers feel like I did - a mixture of horror, sadness and yet cross?

It was quite a shock to read that Sammy Community Transport was no longer in business, not a particularly nice way to know of its closure.

A letter would have been more in keeping, costly maybe, but at least we would have been given the opportunity to say thank you to the staff and volunteer drivers who gave their time because they cared.

For myself, I just enjoyed the days out but, for so many, they relied upon the service for so many things and must feel dreadful to know the service is no longer there.

I met some lovely people and miss seeing them - names like Sylvia, May, Christine, Valerie, Trevor, Jane - and those are but just a few. If they are reading this, it was a pleasure to be in their company.

THe office staff were always polite and helpful. I have special reason to be grateful to Glyn and John and I feel privileged to have known them. I miss the friendly banter!

Kia unveils all-new highperformance Ceed GT THE all-new Kia Ceed GT will be more accomplished and fun-to-drive than ever, and make its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October, alongside the all-new ProCeed GT. THe Ceed GT offers an assured, engaging drive and a powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, as well as a comprehensive range of comfort, safety and convenience technologies.

For the first time in a performance hatchback from Kia, the Ceed GT will be available with an optional seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission, in addition to the standard six-speed manual gearbox.

THe all-new Ceed GT occupies a unique position in the mid-size family car segment, and doesn’t simply chase the highest top speed or fastest straight-line acceleration.

It offers greater agility and grip on winding roads, maximum confidence and comfort at a cruise, and fast-revving turbocharged power perfectly matched to European tastes.

Available exclusively to European drivers, sales will commence in the first quarter of 2019. THe Ceed GT will be covered by Kia’s industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

THe Ceed GT features a sporty exterior design to differentiate it visually from other models in the Ceed range. Where the design of the Ceed range is characterised by its blend of taut creases and curvaceous sheet metal, the GT variant presents a more athletic proposition than conventional versions of the car.

At the front, the Ceed GT has a new front bumper design, incorporating larger air intakes and gloss black trim along the base.

Like the standard Ceed, the GT features a modern interpretation of Kia’s four-lamp ‘icecube’ LED daytime running lights, integrated into the main headlamp unit. Kia’s tiger-nose grille is also adapted for the new model, with a dark chrome surround and a subtle ‘GT’ logo. THe honeycomb grille pattern is also embedded with subtle red highlights.

In profile, it is finished with a glossy chrome window surround and features more substantial side sills, finished in gloss black and red. THe standard 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels feature a new castellated centre cap finished in red, and house red brake calipers. At 135 mm, the ride height is reduced by 5 mm over other Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon variants, making it appear more

planted on the road and reducing the overall centre of gravity.

Unique GT bumpers at the rear complement those found at the front, housing a subtle gloss black rear diffuser, as well as ‘GT’ badging. A small roof spoiler helps channel air cleanly off the top of the car. THe Ceed GT will be available across Europe in a choice of eight paint finishes, with its own unique 18-inch alloy wheel design.

THe GT variant is built around the same ergonomic cabin architecture as other models in the Ceed line-up. Surfaces are finished in high-quality soft-touch materials and metallic trim, while the dashboard is angled towards the driver, making it easier to use on the move. At the centre of the dashboard is Kia’s ‘floating’ touchscreen infotainment system – 7.0- or 8.0-inches wide – with audio

and heating and ventilation controls situated below.

Front passengers in the Ceed GT are held in place by Kia’s new sports seats, created exclusively for the model. For many drivers, a performance hatchback has to be able to fit seamlessly into their daily lives. Practicality is therefore essential – and the Ceed GT model is more practical than most, featuring the same large 395-litre boot as non-GT variants of the Ceed. Its low boot lip is 87 mm lower compared to the previous-generation model, making it easier to load and unload heavy or bulky items. A split-level boot floor allows owners to lower or raise the height of the boot floor, to accommodate larger cargo or create a hidden compartment beneath.

The history of Eartham's Great Ballard School

By Amanda Rogan, learning officer at the Novium Museum GREAT Ballard School, located in Eartham near Chichester, has a long and varied past which this article will explore, from its founding in 1924 to the present day.

Great Ballard School was originally founded in New Milton, Hampshire, in 1924 and was set up as a boys' boarding school. After moving to the area from Bournemouth, Ivor Poole, the first headmaster, started Great Ballard School in a house on the site that had originally been built by an American family called Ubsell.

He had a vision of a school where ‘the values of fairness, politeness, academic success together with an appreciation of sports and music in a country setting, including support of charities, were to be encouraged’.

During the Second World War, the school building and grounds were commandeered by the Army and the school was relocated to Stowell Park in Gloucester, where it stayed for seven years (1940 – 1947). THe new location for the school was an area of 800 acres in the heart of the countryside and boasted its own cricket fields, swimming pool and tennis courts.

In 1947, the school moved once again, this time to Camberley in Surrey. THe site chosen was already a school and had recently been renovated. THe school at this time continued to be a boys only boarding school with

many pupils from both the UK and overseas attending. By 1961 the land around the school had been designated for housing and so a new location was sought. THe school relocated to its current location at Eartham House, near Chichester.

Eartham House and estate has a long history of famous owners and visitors. THe first records that mention the Estate date back to 1368 and show that the area belonged to King Henry VIII. THe first mention of a house on the site was in 1743 when THomas Hayley purchased a small estate in order to build a house for his summer retirement. THe house was later passed down to his son, William Hayley, known for his poetry. In 1800, Hayley sold the house to Chichester MP William Huskisson. THe house has also boasted an impressive list of visitors over the years, including the sculptor John Flaxman, artist George Romney who painted many works at Eartham, and William Blake who sketched the house in the early 1800s. THe current building which houses Great Ballard School was remodelled in 1905 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and still features many Regency decorations.

After the move to the new site, the school was opened to girls in the 1980s and new facilities such as classrooms and a gym were added. Sports such as football, rugby

and shooting were encouraged, as well as activities such as drama, debates and music.

Nursery facilities have expanded over recent years and this term sees a refurbished nursery and the launch of “Little Ballard” allowing younger children to attend. In the 1980s, further land was purchased to allow for a new sports field with views of the countryside, Chichester Harbour and the Isle of Wight.

During the Second World War, several expupils from Great Ballard were killed and the school have been committed in their efforts to remember their sacrifice. In 1953, the first service of remembrance took place and a roll of honour was unveiled at the school, which remains in New Milton to this day. When the school relocated to Eartham, a memorial was set up in the parish Church, St Margaret’s, along with a book of remembrance. Further research during the 1990s led to four

additional names being added to the roll, bringing the total to 18.

In 2011, staff and pupils, both past and present, celebrated 50 years of the school being at Eartham. Guests looked at old photographs and were given tours of the site to see what had changed over the years.

Today, Great Ballard School is a coeducational, independent school which welcomes students aged two-and-a-half to 13. THe school pride themselves on their small class sizes, quality teaching and the unique educational experience they provide.

THere are currently 130 pupils at the school and pupils come from all over the world to attend.

City Angel Volunteer (Chichester) – City Angels City Angels aim to bring a calming presence to the city streets and help anyone in need. They are 66 volunteers, mainly from local churches, who walk around the city centre streets in teams of 6-8 every Friday and the first and last Saturdays of each month, from around 10pm 2am or later. City Angels carry rucksacks with basic first aid kits; water bottles; a dustpan and brush to sweep up broken glass etc.; flip flops to give out to protect bare feet from glass on the streets; and wet wipes to help clean up anyone who may have been sick. City Angels carry radios enabling communication with each other and with police and door security staff. They offer free hot drinks from a mobile coffee van, and generally assist anyone in need, in whatever way they can. City Angels volunteers also attend St Richards Accident and Emergency department, to support those in the waiting area.

Free-scoring Camberley next up for PostSport Blues as winless streak continues CHICHESTER RFC players will be hoping to make it fourth game lucky as the Blues look to end the wait for their first win of the season.

Scott Ashley's side have just two points from their opening three matches after a narrow 25-20 defeat at promotion-chasing Medway last weekend.

THose results leave them third bottom in what looks to be a very competitive London One South.

Chi will hope to haul themselves up the table as the year progresses, starting tomorrow when they have a home crowd behind them to welcome Camberley to Oaklands Park (3pm).

THe visitors will pose a tough test after winning two of their first three matches and racking up an average of more than 50 points a game in the process.

Chi's young squad, though, is growing in confidence as they showed with a composed - albeit unsuccessful - trip to north Kent last time out.

In Division THree, Ian Kewin (Newtown Clubbers), who hit a 180 in the first round, made it through to the final to play Simon Edwards (Richmond 'B').

After hitting the bullseye to go first there was no stopping Kewin, who quickly took the first leg. In the second, he again forged ahead with 85, 85, 81, and 137 to leave double top which he hit to take the game and title.

THe Division One final was a hardfought affair between Friary Z players Richard Ragless and Micky Rowland.

Rowland took charge with a ton, 85, 60 and another ton to put him on the front foot. Ragless tried to catch up but Rowland was ruthless, throwing single 20 and double top for the first leg.

Ragless started the second leg with 5, giving Rowland a head start, as he started with 125, 100 & 100 on the trot.

After both struggled to hit the double Rowland took the honours and title.

DYNAMIC duo Lucy Hijmans and Libby Morton added gold to Dragonflyers' haul of national medals achieved this season.

THe trampolining pair took first place in the nine to 14-years open synchro event in Burgess Hill earlier this month.

THeir exceptional performance saw them beat efforts from male, female and mixed pairs to take the crown.

Coaches at the Bognor Regis-based Dragonflyers club believe there is more to come from the duo. THe girls are ranked at the top of the league after three events.

With only a competition in Newcastle to come, the pair are set for qualification to the league finals, having also taken bronze in Cardiff earlier in the season.

Hijmans and Morton are not the only Dragonflyers members to have secured silverware this season.

In total, club competitors have gained 10 national medals this year to add to their incredible collection of medals obtained

by taking on the UK's top clubs and tough European opposition.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Six trampolinists and two synchro pairs are currently ranked for finals in Sheffield later this year whilst two qualified for English championships in October.

"Couple this with a silver at performance pathway and you begin to realise how strong this Bognor-based club is."

Dragonflyers is a club mark trampoline club with an excellent safety record which holds sessions for people of all ages and abilities.

All sessions take place throughout the week with qualified coaches at THe Regis School in Bognor Regis.

THe club is now also offering recreational sessions for those who want to try out the sport.

O'Leary said: "THe club is going from strength to strength."

GIRLS FOOTBALL: After a 2-0 loss to Chichester City Green last week, Bognor Under 12s were looking to bounce back against Chi's Whites.

A great performance from all the Bognor girls saw them score 18 goals against a resilient City side who never gave up and did themselves proud.

Forward Tia Hart opened the scoring with Esmae Burgess and Chelsy Osborne following up with excellent long-range strikes.

Bognor continued on the front foot until half-time with Hart, Burgess (2) Osborne and Amelia Howard adding to the tally to make it 8-0 at the break.

Bognor coach Mark Osborne said: "Credit goes to Chi City for their never say die attitude and work ethic during the whole game. THey were a credit to their coach and parents."

Blues 'ticking along nicely' SELSEY boss Daren Pearce maintains he is happy with his first six weeks at the club - despite bowing out of the FA Vase and the RUR Cup in the last week.

THe former Sidlesham manager took charge at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium this summer with the task of developing the young players at the club.

After a slow start, Selsey have hit their stride in recent weeks, stringing a run of six matches without defeat to take them up to sixth in the SCFL Division One. THat was until a 2-0 defeat to Southern Counties East Premier side Bearsted in the qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

THen, the Blues were dumped out of the RUR charity cup by league rivals Billingshurst 1-0 in midweek.

On reflection, though, Pearce is happy with how things are coming together with the club.

He said: "I think as a whole we are ticking along quite nicely.

"Of course we are disappointed to go out of the Vase and a cup competition in the last week. We did have a few missing which meant we

have a few of the younger lads who featured.

"We have started reasonably well in the league and there's been no harm in the lads gaining experience. We are starting to create a good group.

"THere is style of play we are trying to implement as well.

"When you have people with different ideas from where they have played before it is not easy as they need to buy into it. We're getting there and hopefully people can see that."

Next up for the Blues is a visit from second-place Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm).

Four points and three places separate Selsey and the Stringers - but Pearce maintains the ambition for both clubs this season is perhaps a little different.

Pearce said: "We have a tough set of games coming up.

"We play second, first and third in the next few weeks.

THat will be a real challenge for the lads.

"But after that we get to play some teams who are perhaps in and around us.

"Hailsham have come down from the premier and kept most of their squad as well as adding a few others, so we will need to be at our best."

PAGHAM will have a couple of new faces in their ranks as they put their unbeaten league run to the test.

Joint managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds confirmed this week that the Lions had signed young striker Shane Brazil from Arundel and winger Jack Rowe-Hurst from Lancing.

THe new additions come as Pagham welcome Shoreham to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) before a trip to Newhaven on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With three wins and three draws from their first six matches, the Lions have made a solid start to the SCFL Premier season sitting fifth, seven points off leaders Chichester City.

Pagham were without a game at the weekend due to receiving a bye in the FA Vase.

THey enter the competition at the first round stage on October 12 when they head to Combined Counties side Hanworth Villa.

THe Lions also got their RUR Cup campaign underway on Tuesday when they defeated SCFL Division One side Worthing United 4-0.

Goals from Callum Overton, Howard Neighbour, George Gaskin and Rowe-Hurst on his debut secured the win.

Long road ahead for Bosham

SCFL Division Two side Bosham are heading out on the longest road trip of the season with plenty to mull on as the Robins' caretaker staff look to reverse an alarming start to the season.

Recent years have been among the most successful ever in the history of the Walton Lane side with silverware lifted in each of the past four campaigns.

But hopes of continuing that run appear extremely slim after the Robins lost five of their opening six matches in the league, leaving them fourth bottom with just three

points.

THe latest defeat came last weekend when Cowfold beat Bosham 4-1 with Will Lewis grabbing a late consolation goal.

With the departure of manager Dennis Hughes, too, it's been left to caretakers Tony Hancock and Danny Mullen to pick up the pieces. Tomorrow sees them make the 150mile round trip to the other side of Hastings to play fellow strugglers Westfield (3pm) with three crucial points at stake.

Steve Bailey's side have strung together an excellent run in recent weeks to push themselves up the table on their return to step six football.

THe good form continued at the weekend when they defeated step five side Colliers Wood United in the qualifying round of the FA Vase.

A second half goal from Ben Mepham sealed the victory against the Combined Counties Premier outfit and secured a home game against Southern Counties East Chatham Town on October 13.

Bailey's side followed that up with a 3-2 victory over league rivals Storrington in the RUR Cup second round.

Next up for the Sids is a trip to league leaders AFC Varndeanians tomorrow (3pm) before a game at fourth-place Steyning Town on Tuesday (8pm).

Smith: belief is key to bouncing back CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on his side to have more belief as they look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season.

THe Oaklands Park side were edged out 2-1 in what was a top-of-the-table clash with Coventry United last weekend.

THat result sees Chi drop from first place down to third in the Women's National South, one point behind last weekend’s victors.

Chi now have a week off before returning to action on September 30 with an away trip to Loughborough Foxes (2pm) And, despite losing their unbeaten record, Smith says he will be focusing on the positives as the season rolls on.

He said: "We are disappointed to lose given

the season we have had so far.

"Last year we lost 6-1 over two games to Coventry so there are positives. I think we dominated the first half but we weren't physical in certain areas."

He added: "I think they wanted it more in the second half. Coventry are a good side and the team to beat. Watford and Oxford United may have come down but Coventry are the team to beat."

Chi received an extra boost with the return of Cherelle Khassal, who grabbed City's goal in the defeat.

Smith said: "It's great to have her back and it was a great finish with a back heel. She brings an energy and intensity and, hopefully, she can push on from here."

Pearce: Shock for the Rocks?

Not if we stick to our strengths Next Game

AFC SUDBURY (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging his side to stick to what they know best in order to avoid an FA Cup upset this weekend.

THe Rocks take on Bostik North side AFC Sudbury at Nyewood Lane tomorrow (3pm) in the second qualifying round of the world's oldest knockout competition.

With £9,000 on offer to the winners of the tie, Pearce knows victory over the lower league opponents would boost not only the mood of the Rocks faithful but also the club's coffers.

And, despite going into the match off the back of an 8-0 victory over fellow Bostik Premier side Whitehawk in the Velocity Trophy, the veteran manager urged his side against complacency creeping in.

Pearce said: "THe big target is always the first round, which, aside from a few times in the 1980s, we have not managed all that often.

"Sudbury, though, will not be easy - they will be intent on stopping us playing and we need to be ready for that.

"What makes the FA Cup such a great competition is the upsets which normally come when a fancied side lose due to taking a few things for granted. All I am focused on is getting through to the third qualifying round."

Rocks fans saw both sides of the Bognor coin this past week when a frustrating 1-1 draw in the league at Carshalton Athletic was followed by a thumping win against Sussex rivals Whitehawk in the league cup.

After falling behind when Dan Lincoln failed to keep out a soft effort, Jimmy Muitt struck with a lobbed effort to ensure Bognor returned from the capital with their unbeaten record intact at the weekend.

THe point leaves them fourth in the league, six points off top spot.

Tuesday saw the team take a number of chances. Muitt stole the headlines, scoring four after coming on as a sub. But equally pleasing were two goals for Tommy Scutt and long range strikes from Harvey Whyte and Doug Tuck.

With no Dan Smith, Lincoln or Keaton Wood in the squad, Pearce was delighted to see his team put together a complete performance.

He said: "THe pleasing thing for me is that, while they did put out a weakened side, we also were missing a number of key players.

"THe first 28 minutes we played ever so well and I think we could have been two or three clear. But in the last third of that half we did exactly what we did on Saturday - when the pass and move didn’t deliver a goal we tried to do other things.

"THat’s the opposite to what we need to do; we need to believe in what we do and keep at it. I thought we hadn't learned our lesson on Saturday but then in the second half we had a magic quarter of an hour.

"Within the 16 man squad, the atmosphere is good and the players are in good fettle.

Draws could hold Bognor back IT'S BECOME a familiar tale for Rocks fans this season - win at home, draw away.

Compared to last season's relegation campaign, many may be wondering what Bognor supporters are complaining about.

After all, surely everyone wants to follow a side that are unbeaten after the first six weeks of fixtures?

But, of those four draws on the road - last Saturday's 1-1 stalemate at Carshalton being the latest - at least two of them have been two points dropped rather than one point earned.

In the Bostik Premier, where already there are six points between the Rocks in fourth and leaders Tonbridge Angels at the top, the failure to amass victories on the road could well cost Bognor a swift return to National South.

Manager Jack Pearce is well aware of the issue and is intent on tackling it.

Pearce said: "Of course, it's something we are aware of.

"Two of them we should have won, no question. But if we win at home and draw away then we will be there or thereabouts this season.

"If we want to win it, then we perhaps need to do better."

WELL what a few weeks it has been.

And what a game that was at Whitstable Town in the FA Cup! For me, the highlights of the day included Dan Smith and Bradley Lethbridge turning up and performing well and scoring goals, Jimmy Muitt’s goals (again) and Mason Walsh’s wonder strike from outside the box after crossing the defence with his run. A beautiful day for all involved in the club.

It’s a shame they didn’t film the goals because they would have certainly made the cut for Ian Guppy’s end of season video highlight reel during the players' presentation evening.

It’s always an adventure following the Rocks. Travelling to Carshalton Athletic last week was just that!

It’s happened before and it happened again - the coach broke down on Pebble Coomb near Betchworth!

THis time the clutch had burnt out and we were stuck on the fairly steep hill nine miles away from the ground.

THis happened at 1.30pm, but we knew there was another coach due to pick us up coming from Lindfield.

It’s amazing the amount of abuse drivers give you for the unexpected break down on the way up this hill but I must say Geoff and Ray handled the traffic well, directing, slowing down and allowing the traffic to pass the coach safely while the rest of us awaited the substitute coach.

Eventually, the second coach got there by 2.30pm and we were off to the War Memorial Ground on Colston Avenue and we got there with just two minutes to spare.

THe game itself was fairly cagey in parts. But I thought Bognor bounced back well from the early goal with Muitt spotting the goalkeeper off his line to loft it over and bounce the ball into an empty net. It reminded me of his finish at

Haringey Borough in the first game of the season.

In the end, Bognor’s defence held the Robins to a draw and it was a decent point really given the Green Army had to deal with some pressure from the hosts in the last ten minutes.

I think Carshalton should have a good season as they have a fairly strong defence and have players with pace and strength in midfield.

It was quite different in midweek when we played in the first game of the Velocity Trophy competition at Nyewood Lane against Whitehawk. And on Phil ‘Bobbie’ Westwood’s 50th birthday the Rocks reigned supreme.

I don’t think I have seen such a dominant second half display from a Bognor side in a long time. THere were some really fabulous goals included in that too.

You also have to give it to Joshua McCormick, Joe Tomlinson and Mason Walsh who also had great matches to help the team win handsomely here.

Ex-Rock James Fraser was missing for Whitehawk though in a team that must have been left demoralised after losing by that many.

League cup or not, it was a real bad day at the office for them. Hythe Town away next for us in the Velocity Trophy on a Tuesday night!

On the other hand, this game in midweek has surely given our players a great boost going into tomorrow’s FA Cup second qualifying round match at home to AFC Sudbury. £9,000 to the winners. I am confident we can get a result here but anything can happen in the FA Cup. I hope to see as many Rocks fans as possible at Nye Camp to cheer on the team to another home win. Let’s make the next round!
