Legal battle over Vélo South BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP of residents have formally started a legal challenge against West Sussex County Council regarding road closure proposals for Vélo South. THe campaign group, Stop Vélo South, has launched the challenge through Guildford Solicitors, Cheyney Gouldding

LLP, ahead of the 100 mile cycle race on September 23. Group members have explained that the group was not anti-cycling but against lack of consultation from the event. A spokesperson said: "Stop Vélo South deplores the appalling organisation and lack of consultation behind this specific event. "THere have been a catalogue of failings on the part of West Sussex County

Council to act in the best interest of residents and businesses and ensure public safety. "THe grounds of the challenge are that the council failed to follow the correct procedures and legal requirements in giving its blessing to the event and its attendant road closure programme. "We fervently hope that West Sussex County Council will redeem their reputation to some degree,

by acknowledging their errors and cancelling approval for the road closure programme. "If only the council had acted as they are required to do by consulting with the public at the earliest opportunity then an alternative event of which we all could be proud could have been designed. "We look forward to Louise Goldsmith’s response." See page three
