Legal battle over Vélo South

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP of residents have formally started a legal challenge against West Sussex County Council regarding road closure proposals for Vélo South.

THe campaign group, Stop Vélo South, has launched the challenge through Guildford Solicitors, Cheyney Gouldding

LLP, ahead of the 100 mile cycle race on September 23.

Group members have explained that the group was not anti-cycling but against lack of consultation from the event. A spokesperson said: "Stop Vélo South deplores the appalling organisation and lack of consultation behind this specific event.

"THere have been a catalogue of failings on the part of West Sussex County

Council to act in the best interest of residents and businesses and ensure public safety.

"THe grounds of the challenge are that the council failed to follow the correct procedures and legal requirements in giving its blessing to the event and its attendant road closure programme.

"We fervently hope that West Sussex County Council will redeem their reputation to some degree,

by acknowledging their errors and cancelling approval for the road closure programme.

"If only the council had acted as they are required to do by consulting with the public at the earliest opportunity then an alternative event of which we all could be proud could have been designed.

"We look forward to Louise Goldsmith’s response."

A POPULAR DIY store in the city is set to remain open despite the chain falling into administration.

Homebase has been given permission to shut 42 of its stores, putting around 1,500 jobs at risk, but Chichester's Westhampnett Road store is not on that list.

THe retailer is closing the stores the same way House of Fraser did, via a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), a controversial insolvency procedure used by struggling firms to shut underperforming shops.

95.92 per cent of the company's creditors voted in favour of a CVA to close the 42 DIY outlets and get rent reductions of up to 90 per cent on 70 others.

"We are pleased that an overwhelming majority of our creditors, including such a proportion of landlords, have supported the plans laid out in the CVA," said Homebase chief executive Damian McGloughlin.

"We now have the platform to turn the

business around and return to profitability.

THis has been a difficult time for many of our team members and I am very grateful for their continued support and hard work.

"We can look to the future with great confidence, and we will be working closely with our suppliers to capitalise on the opportunities we see in the home improvement market in the UK and Ireland." he added.

Owners Hilco have announced they will be spending £25m on the chain, which will reduce to about 200 stores by late 2018 to early 2019.

Residents in Chichester saw the store taken over and re-branded as Bunnings, owned by Westfarmers two years ago.

However, Hilco bought Homebase for £1 from them in May after the Australian owners lost £1bn running the DIY/garden centre group.

Chichester district councillor Richard Plowman said: "At last some good news.

Homebase is an important part of the retailing offer for Chichester.

"I am really pleased that the staff will retain their jobs. THey have always been helpful and friendly."

City man is arrested after drugs found at his Airbnb A CHICHESTER man is in prison in Spain after police found cannabis worth £5 million at the Airbnb he was staying in.

Robert Mansfield-Hewitt, 51, is an engineer with a doctorate in physics and was arrested in June but has yet to be charged.

He has said he knew nothing of drugs found in the garage of the property he booked for a business trip.

THe man is said to be suffering from liver disease ascites and is being held at Botafuegos Prison in Algeciras, notorious for housing ETA terrorists.

MP for Chichester, Gillian Keegan said: “Unfortunately, I am unable to provide details of constituent cases, however, I am happy to confirm that I am aware of this case, and I am liaising with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to further understand the situation."

If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to six years. THe property was booked through the Airbnb site, on which people let out their homes to holidaymakers and other travellers.

He is being kept on the medical wing in jail after he collapsed in shock and his “body started to shut down” after his incarceration.

Highly qualified Abi opens beauty salon From page one

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A BEAUTICIAN from Chichester has set up her own business after she achieved the world's most prestigious qualification for aesthetics and beauty.

Abi Sawkins, 25, studied at the Mary Reid Spa Academy in Edinburgh and achieved ITEC and CIDESCO diplomas.

When Abi was 12, she was sat on the end of her nan’s bed - she was losing her fight to cancer and Abi was giving her a foot rub.

She said: "I didn’t know what I was doing but it was just felt natural. She let out a huge sigh and I could see it was

something small but was just enough to help her at that moment.

"It was in my head that day forward that I wanted to help people relax, de-stress, just chill and take those pains away even for a couple of minutes."

After completing her schooling, she travelled overseas to work at THe RitzCarlton in the Cayman Islands. Here, she provided clients with massage and beauty treatments at a five-star hotel, where the standards and genuine care were of upmost importance.

Abi returned to Chichester last year and fulfilled her dream to open up THe Salt Barn in Crockerhill, which has been renovated from an old stable barn into a tranquil salon.

She said: "It was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made. I always wanted to have my own business, a spa to call my own. I wanted to start the big chapter in my life.

"Working at the THe Ritz-Carlton, I got to work with so many therapists from Canada, India, Jamaica, Romania and so on. We helped each other develop different skills and techniques that were different to what we were taught in our own countries. THat is so special to me and something I have applied to massage in particular."

THe group has asked West Sussex County Council to confirm it will not make the orders, stating the deadline was September 15 to respond or legal action may ensue.

Jon Ridgeon, executive chairman of Vélo South organisers CSM Active, said: "THe reality is all big events like this often face challenges and I totally accept there is a reasonably small but totally committed group that are against Vélo South and from everything I know, the process has been absolutely correct and I see absolutely no chance of this legal challenge being effective.

"We are 100 per cent committed and 100 per cent believe we will be delivering Vélo South on September 23 and it will be a huge success.

"THis is an unwelcome distraction this late in the day. I don’t believe it has any grounds at all and I have never seen a challenge like this be successful on any other similar events.

"We have been communicating this intensely for months and months to make sure everyone knows about it. We have an army of people who are working on making sure people who need to get access, be it carers or people getting to work, have the solutions in place."

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: “On Friday, August 31, the county council received a letter from lawyers instructed by five residents.

"THe letter makes a number of claims on behalf of those individuals about the procedure and arrangements for enabling road closures in connection with the proposed Vélo South cycle

event.

"THe county council will, in accordance with the formal process in which the letter has been sent, consider its content and provide a full response to the lawyers as required.

Given that such a formal legal process has now been commenced, it will not be appropriate for the council to comment further on the letter at this stage.”

Landlord of THe Royal Oak at Lavant, Szilárd Szucs, supported the event, despite the roads to his business being closed.

He said: "We are lucky, the hotel is full because of the cyclists but Sunday lunch won't happen because the roads are closed between 9am and 6pm here. THe blocked roads will mean it will be quite difficult to have Sunday lunch but dinner will be busy.

"In one way I am concerned as we will lose business but it is the first race.

THis has never been done before so I think we will just see how it goes.

"After this race, we can see if they need to block the roads for a whole day or if they need to organise things better. I am supportive of this event, it is not a bad thing. I have been kept up to date on things from the organisers of Vélo South but not heard much from the council. " Barns Green resident Julie Woodley said: "THe spin of 'oh it’s only one day' or 'bringing thousands to the local economy' could not be further from the truth. Maybe those who are so convinced of that need to have their bikes removed for one day, a days loss of earnings inflicted and be isolated by themselves for one day or possibly have their much needed food not turn up - how would they like it?"

` Firearms stolen POLICE are appealing for information after a number of firearms were stolen from a property in Hook Lane, Bosham.

THe break-in occurred sometime between 9.30pm on Wednesday, August 15, and 1.30am on THursday, August 16, while the homeowners were away.

A significant amount of property was stolen, including approximately 17 firearms, jewellery, tools and two vehicles – a BMW and a Ford Transit flatbed van. THe BMW has since been recovered but the Transit remains outstanding – the cab is white and the flatbed is black.

Detectives believe at least four suspects were involved in the burglary, but others may have knowledge of the current location of the firearms.

Anyone with any information about the burglary or the stolen items is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 355 of 16/08.

` Council hacked CHICHESTER City Council has announced that its servers have been hacked.

At the council meeting on Wednesday evening, Rodney Dugga, town clerk confirmed there was no evidence of data loss.

He said: "THe best way to contact us is by telephone. Technical advisers are on the case and we expect a resolution very shortly."

Photographs are saved by lottery

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NATIONAL Lottery grant of £9,000 has been awarded to Selsey Town Council for a heritage project to preserve and make accessible a significant collection of photographs.

THe pictures, which document Selsey’s history, will be protected thanks to money raised by National Lottery players. THe project will focus on creating a dedicated website as an invaluable photographic resource for everyone.

Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the project will bring together volunteers from the community with members of the Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group, former members of Selsey Society, Selsey Town Council and expert staff from the West Sussex Record Office to catalogue the images, scan the best and create a website. Full training for volunteers will be provided by the Records Office staff.

THe Selsey Society, which dissolved in 2015, collected a wide-ranging collection of 4000 photographs, postcards and other artefacts. THe collection has images dating from the 19th century to the present day and covers significant topics unique to Selsey and rare in Sussex, such as lifeboats, coastal erosion,

fishing industry, railway carriage homes, the Selsey Tram light railway, caravan and holiday parks.

All parts of the town are covered. THe collection, for its safe-keeping, is to be transferred to the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester. THis project aims to ensure it is easily available for local people to use while also ensuring the long-term preservation of the originals.

Commenting on the award, Cllr Mike Beal, chairman of Selsey Town Council, said: “We are delighted that this worthwhile project can go forward thanks to National Lottery players, meaning that all these important visual images of Selsey’s past will be available to the town’s current and future residents for years to come.”

New plans are underway to help deliver more homes to Tangmere CHICHESTER District Council has selected a development partner as part of plans to bring much-needed homes to Tangmere.

Countryside Properties will help deliver the site which was identified as one of the strategic development locations under the council’s Local Plan. THe site will include 1,000 homes plus a wealth of community facilities.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Countryside Properties to help bring these new homes to Tangmere,” said Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning at Chichester District Council.

“THe selection is based on who we believe can best deliver the comprehensive development of the site, in line with the Local Plan and Neighbourhood Plan policies."

A total of 13 companies contacted the council with expressions of interest about becoming a development

partner. THree of the submissions met the criteria and scored much higher than the others and were taken forward to the detailed assessment and interview stage. Countryside Properties scored the highest.

THey will now start talking to landowners to see how the site land can be assembled through negotiation.

At the same time work will take place on preparing a compulsory purchase order, in case this route does not work.

A consultation will take place with the parish council and local residents and it is expected that work on this will start in October, 2018.

Tangmere Parish Council chairman Andrew Irwin said: “Residents can be reassured that the objectives for the development that they supported in the referendum will be delivered, and at the conclusion of this project Tangmere will be a place in which people will be proud to live.”

The Range comes under fire

Between the camping, children's toys and Christmas aisles, visitors to the store were horrified to find the potentially dangerous products for sale.

A customer notice pinned to the back of the shelves reads: "Archery bows, arrows and crossbows may only be used for inanimate target shooting in the UK. It is an offence to shoot at any live animal and serious penalties apply.

"Archery bows and arrows and crossbows are not firearms but are covered primarily by the Crossbows Act 1987 and the Crossbows (Northern Ireland) Order 1998."

THere are also signs that explain ID must be shown where purchasing the equipment as it is an offence to sell these items to anybody under the age of 18.

Marcus Saunders, from Bognor Regis, said: "I find it incomprehensible that in a country where knife crime is at an all time high, someone thought it ethical and sensible to offer for sale lethal weapons, bows and arrows, alongside cleaning materials and Christmas decorations!

"THese should be removed from the shelves without delay."

THe Chichester Post contacted THe Range for a comment. A spokesperson said: "As a leading home, garden and leisure retailer, THe Range sells many leisure products that support diverse hobbies and pastimes including fishing, swimming, cycling and archery.

"Archery is a hugely popular activity in the UK and has many benefits, both physical and mental.

"Our archery range has an 18+ age restriction. Furthermore, we operate a challenge 25 policy for extra security measures and will not sell any products to any customer who cannot provide identification of age."

THe crossbows, bows and arrows vary in price, ranging between ÂŁ49 and ÂŁ20.99 for some on sale.

Brenda New, secretary of Bognor Regis Archery Club, said: "THey are selling two versions of compound bows and also Recurve bows. THese could probably reach some distance. Despite the purchasing conditions they could cause

problems in the wrong hands.

"In order to shoot at our club, everyone has to complete a beginners course which is held over a few weeks with ten hours training per course, where they are instructed how to safely shoot a bow and learn the strict safety rules within the club. THis has to be completed before they are allowed to join our archery club.

"THey are insured with ArcheryGB, otherwise they cannot shoot. Many people are not aware how powerful bows including crossbows can be and in inexperienced hands could lead to serious accidents to people and animals."

New shop opens offering support to all A ONE-STOP shop has opened in Selsey to enable visitors and residents to find a wealth of advice under one roof.

THe Selsey Care Shop is now fully operational in the High Street, Selsey and open from Monday to Saturday between 9.30am and 4pm.

It is hoped it will enable more vulnerable residents to continue to live independently within their own homes and prevent social isolation, and reassurance to families and friends who may not be living close by.

Within the shop is a Selsey information exchange and Carers Support Selsey who offer

support and information to all voluntary carers.

Coffee mornings will also be held on the second THursday of the month and support groups on the second Wednesday afternoon and fourth Wednesday afternoon of the month.

Selsey Dementia Action Alliance has also been developed to turn Selsey in to a Dementia Friendly Community and Selsey Community Watch will provide a range of activities which are co-ordinated within the shop.

` Police reports OVER the week of Monday, August 20, to Sunday, August 26, there have been 15 reports of break-ins. THese have occurred at locations including Goodwood Racecourse, Apuldram Lane and THe Fox Goes Free, Charlton.

In Whyke Lane, Chichester, on Tuesday, August 21, while the occupant was away on a holiday, their property was broken into by smashing the back patio doors. An untidy search was conducted and jewellery stolen.

Serial 712 21/08/18 On THursday, August 23, in Cambrai Avenue, Chichester, while the occupant was away on holiday, there was an attempt to break into the property. THe glass of the back door was broken but had not given way.

Serial 1359 23/08/18 On Saturday, August 25, in York Road, Chichester, while the occupant was away on a holiday, their property was broken into, there was no sign of forced entry. An untidy search of the property was conducted and chocolate, a shaving gift set and an MP3 player were stolen. Serial 919 25/08/18 On the evening of Tuesday, August 21, in Broad Road, Nutbourne there was a report of a suspicious man being seen.

He was seen to knock on the door of an elderly resident and stated his car had broken down. A neighbour shouted out of the window at the man and he got back in his car and drove away. Serial 112 21/08/18 At Itchenor Sailing Club on Saturday, August 25, there was an attempt theft of a boat. A panel had been pulled off and an attempt to hotwire it had been made. David's tales of animal magic

kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A RETIRED school teacher has written some extra resources to help teachers and pupils.

David Rawlings, 81, from Donnington, found when he was a teacher that it was difficult because children’s imaginations were lying dormant or underused.

He said: "I started writing these resources to provide helpful material for teachers and their pupils. I hope teachers will use the material suited to the age and ability of their children.

"THis may be verbally or by reading and writing. THe underlying aim is to stimulate each child's imagination.

Often, getting children to write creatively is very difficult.

"THe problem is TV and that nothing is left to the imagination. I believe our imagination is very precious and needs to be stimulated.

"THe stories, I hope, provide stepping stones to the child's growth in using the imagination. THe Bible also provides a valuable and rich source of stories where the writer has used his imagination."

David's teaching career began in 1960 when he taught at Haslewood Junior School in Hertfordshire. He went on to become deputy head of Hob Lane CE First School in Warwickshire from 1973

to 1983 Many of David's cat stories lack an ending. THe children are invited to finish the stories in the knowledge there is no right or wrong ending.

"THe imagination can be like a desert stream," continued David. "Drought conditions may make the stream dry up.

THen the rains return. Slowly the steam grows. Other little streams are fed into the stream. Soon the stream has turned into a river. A child's imagination can grow in the same way."

Eventually, David hopes each child will have the experience to write their own stories which could be based on their observation of life around them in school, home and elsewhere.

He said: "My stories grew through my observation of two beautiful Siamese cats who live near me. I sometimes imagine I have conversations with them about their recent adventures.

"Sometimes I see them doing something which sparks a story. THus some of my stories are a mixture of fact and fiction."

David has had two of his pieces published so far, Beating the Bogus Caller Safety Pack, and a box of his Off THe Peg Assemblies.

A history of the city from A-Z A WRITER and historian from the city has just seen publication of his later book, A-Z of Chichester.

Philip MacDougall has written the history of Chichester through people, places and events and combined it into a book.

One important theme followed is that of highlighting a number of individuals who have greatly contributed to Chichester but have largely gone unrecognised.

THese are people who Philip believes are deserving of blue plaques. Among them, Philip picks out Dr Nicholas Tyack, once described as Chichester’s greatest benefactor.

Another hero that Philip especially admires is Ernest Shippam, onetime head of the family run company which manufactured food products at the factory that once stood on East Walls.

"He so much cared for his workers as

during World War One, he constantly kept in touch with those who fought on the Western Front," explained Philip.

"It was his incredible generosity, giving a weekly pay bonus to those who enlisted, Christmas presents and extra money if they were wounded and help to their families in the event of their death."

As well as writing about Chichester, Philip has a recognised expertise in naval history, writing in-depth on the supporting infrastructure of various navies across the world, concentrating especially on the 18th century.

Philip has also contributed biographical material on selected naval officers for the widely-acclaimed Dictionary of National Biography.

` Dementia services CHICHESTER residents can learn more about dementia and the services available to them at a special Dementia Awareness Day at the city’s public library, thanks to Alzheimer’s Society and West Sussex Library Service.

A wealth of information will be on offer on the day on Monday, September 24, between 10am and 2pm. THere will be representatives from organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Carers Support West Sussex, Coastal West Sussex Mind, Crossroads, Dementia Support and Chichester Dementia Action Alliance attending.

Council funds city wardens

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk JUST OVER £126,000 has been allocated to fund an effective community warden service so it can continue supporting residents in communities across Chichester district.

At the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors agreed to fund half of the service, allocating just over £126,000 each year until 2021. THe cabinet also agreed to fully fund the senior community warden for the same period. THe funding is subject to match funding from partners.

THe community warden service has been operating since 2005 in several areas of the district; Chichester east, Chichester west, Chichester south, Selsey north and south Tangmere and Oving and East and West Wittering.

THe eight-strong team offers a visible presence in their communities, working with residents to reduce low-level crime and tackle social issues. THey work closely with key organisations in their specific areas such as schools, charities, voluntary organisations and businesses.

THey also act as a link between residents and police and have proved to be extremely effective in tackling problems such as antisocial behaviour and checking in on

vulnerable and isolated members of the community.

THey also support other council initiatives at a local level such as the current Against Litter campaign and youth engagement projects.

“Our community wardens do an excellent job of helping make the areas they serve safer for residents and we really value the work that they do,” said Cllrr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council. “In a recent survey, people said they find it an easy service to access and that it is effective in dealing with a variety of issues.

“While the wardens help deal with a large proportion of crime-related incidents, they also do a lot of support work behind the scenes working with community organisations and individuals, particularly supporting elderly people who are on their own, and this work is invaluable.

THey provide peace of mind and reassurance.

“Because they are based in a specific area, the wardens know their communities inside out and have excellent links across the neighbourhood, which means they can help direct residents to further support that the council and other organisations can provide.”

A WEEKEND of harvest helped continue the Weald and Downland's fourth instalment of Rural Life last Saturday and Sunday.

THe museum has been holding special rural life events including historic gardens, English scything, charcoal and woodyard and harvest.

Historic gardens weekend meant visitors could discover the herbs, vegetables and flowers rural households would have grown and used from Tudor times right up to the Victorian era.

THose who attended over the bank holiday weekend experienced a traditional charcoal burn and a whole host of demonstrations in the working woodyard.

THe harvest weekend allowed visitors to

enjoy seasonal demonstrations focusing on the harvest.

Over the course of the weekend visitors could see a variety of different produce harvested across the site. From the vegetables in the Victorian cottage garden, to the produce of Bayleaf farmhouse garden and orchard.

THere were also a range of talks and demonstrations to enjoy, including: THe Tudor harvest, threshing and winnowing, making straw rope and straw hats, skep making, woodworking and flax processing.

THe next Rural Life weekend is 'home' and takes place on Saturday, September 29 to 30.

Thousands raised as cyclists travel almost 800 miles for mayor's charities

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TWO CYCLISTS have returned home to Chichester after cycling over 800 miles in just ten days and raising over £8,000.

Justin Bulpett and Malcolm Meaby departed from John O'Groats on Tuesday, August 21, and arrived in Chichester on Friday last week.

THe event was an organised cycle ride by the city mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, to raise money for his two chosen charities, Stonepillow and the Oxmarket Centre of Arts.

THe usual ride is called LEJOG (Lands End to John O'Groats) so the Mayor has aptly named this event as JOGChi. THe return to Chichester saw both Malcolm and Justin greeted by the Mayor, bailiff of the city, Cllr Jane Kilby, Chichester MP Gillian Keegan and town crier, Cllr Richard Plowman.

Cllr Bell said: "THis is a superb achievement. THe ride north to south is even more challenging than the traditional south to north route because the prevailing winds are against you.

"THey have shown great physical and mental strength and have already raised over £7,000 for charities Stonepillow and THe Oxmarket. I am very proud of them."

Malcolm described the ride as a once in a lifetime opportunity. He said: "When Justin suggested the ride I didn't hesitate to say yes.

"People have been really warm and

friendly and the Scottish islands were by far my favourite part as they were simply beautiful.

"To raise £8,000 is just amazing. It really shot up in the last few days of our journey.

Whenever we saw anybody who was homeless on our ride we remembered, that's what we are doing it for."

THe bikes the twosome used were a pair of Carrera Virtuoso road bikes from Halfords. THey were kindly donated by the Chichester branch and the only adaptations made were more comfortable (but still slim profile) seats and self-sealing slime in the tyres.

Premier Inn also donated rooms for the nights in their hotels scattered across the country and one receptionist even kindly tumble-dried Malcolm and Justin's clothes so they were dry for the next day.

THroughout the journey, Justin kept a record of the event in an online blog.

In it he says: "Remember that what you are doing is not just arduous but amazing; you are seeing the country and sights at a pace no car will experience them.

"Some destinations will stick in the mind more than others – the beauty of Dornoch, Perth and Stratford-uponAvon, but this journey was never just about reaching destinations."

Malcolm added: "Cycling five days through Scotland and then a further five through England with only one day of poor weather was simply amazing.

"Our wet weather gear was incredibly basic so we were very lucky not to

experience more of the ‘wet stuff’ along the way. THe day that we did experience driving rain was further testament to the strong partnership that Justin and I had formed. " Describing the last leg of their journey, Justin wrote: "Heading out towards Bognor Regis on busy Chichester roads, we had an uneventful journey along the good cycle track that runs between Chichester and Bognor. Finally, we turned towards THe Waverley pub and were greeted to applause by a small number of family and friends. Hugs and handshakes and, later, several pints followed. THen I took off my SPD shoes, donned my trainers and Malcolm and I walked down to the sea. We had touched the waters of the sea to the north of the mainland of Britain and now we touched the waters to the south. Our personal journey was complete."

THe duo cycled a total of 795.71 miles in a time of 67 hours and two minutes, burning 30,469 calories each.

THe total raised so far is £8,937.42 with a target of £10,000 - which will be split between the two charities.

` Midhurst land sold DISTRICT councillors have agreed to sell land in Midhurst, previously occupied by the old Grange Centre.

At its cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors reluctantly agreed to sell the land to developers who plan to build a care home.

Following a competitive bidding process, the developers won the bid which has the potential to create more than 60 new jobs in the area.

THe land has been on the market for a number of years. THree years ago, Kimberley Developments was chosen as the council’s preferred purchaser to construct a food store, but due to economic problems faced by the food retail sector, the disposal of the land did not go ahead.

From the bids that the council received, it felt a care home was the best long-term solution and under section 123 of the Local Government Act 1972, it states: “a council shall not dispose of land for a consideration less than the best".

Chichester District Council leader, Cllr Tony Dignum, said: "Conscious of its need to generate best value for the community as a whole, the council officers have concluded that a care home is the most viable long-term solution.

"THere can be no doubt at present that the commercial value to the council of a modern care home is significantly greater than all the alternatives, meets a genuine community need, and offers good local employment opportunities with the potential for over 60 jobs being created."

Young and old gather for a special march at care home

Members of the Royal British Legion, cadets, brownies and rainbows marched into Wellington Grange for their “Gratitude of the Young” fundraiser

event.

Local residents and visitors looked on to see the parade march into the care home. At the head of the march, behind the standards, was one of their highest ranking servicemen, Major General Ian Lyall Grant.

At the age of 103, he enjoyed his moment by wearing his medals with pride along with the home's other servicemen and women, who met the march outside Wellington Grange.

Ian said: "It was a very moving and wonderful day, thank you to everyone involved."

After having photos taken, the party moved into the garden for an act of remembrance where Ian and the youngest rainbow member laid a poppy bouquet at the altar, and the standard flags where dipped.

Katie is a walking miracle

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN EASTERGATE woman who has cheated death three times has urged people to sign up to become an organ donor.

Katie Reed, 37, has been given a new life thanks to a pair of donated lungs to help her overcome her cystic fibrosis.

THis week is NHS organ donation week and Katie said: "It saves lives. It gives people that quality of life again. Any transplant is not a cure and it’s not a bed of roses. You have to be true to yourself and be mentally strong.”

Katie underwent a 14-hour operation at Harefield Hospital in Uxbridge last Easter for the transplant.

Her lungs were so badly damaged by the cystic fibrosis the surgeon found it difficult to remove them. She was given 12 pints of blood and her family were told she was not going to survive.

However, Katie fought back to defy the doctors again and has been told she will live to about 41.

She was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which fills her lungs with thick mucus, when she was three. Her mum, Mary and father, Andrew, were told she wouldn’t live past 16.

With the illness under control through medication and physio, Katie studied animal care at college with a dream of becoming a veterinary nurse. She had a horse, Millie, and lived a relatively carefree life. When she reached 18, Katie was given her first intravenous therapy to ease the pressure on her lungs.

After being given oxygen for walking, it wasn’t until she was 35 that Katie got a

bad virus and was sent to A&E with high levels of carbon dioxide in her lungs. She was transferred to the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea where doctors told Mary and Andrew she was so ill they didn’t think she would live.

Mary said: “As she had been so well up to this point, it was quite a shock to be told that. I had never even given that a thought to be honest.”

Katie was given treatment through a non-invasive ventilator to help her body push out the carbon dioxide in her lungs and was able to walk down the ward the next morning to meet her family.

But Katie had been told her outlook was still poor and she was put on the transplant list. Katie said: “THey asked me to think about going to intensive care where I would be put on a ventilator and probably wouldn’t come out.

"I thought, don’t you dare tell me that, how dare you say that. I’m only 35, there is no way you are telling me that life in me has had enough, what are you talking about? THis is not it yet.”

Katie came home and was doing well, despite being on oxygen 24 hours a day.

THen, one morning, she woke up and couldn’t breathe. She was rushed to St Richard’s Hospital and was found to have blood clots on her lungs. She was transferred to the Royal Brompton again and treated.

But, in the summer of 2017, Katie started to deteriorate and was in and out of hospital until last Easter.

She was put on the lung transplant list and waited 18 months to get her new pair of lungs. THe doctor told Katie her condition had deteriorated again and she wouldn’t make it to 2019 if a suitable pair failed to become available.

Katie said: “I told the doctor I didn’t want to die. I think it’s hard for the doctor to tell people they are going to die. I could see the doctor was helpless. I was more worried about her. She looked so stressed

because I was in tears.”

She and her family have thanked the NHS doctors, nurses, physios and cleaners who looked after her.

` Help for hospices A TIMBER and builders merchant in Chichester and Bognor Regis is to repeat its campaign for hospices.

THe Covers' Help for Hospices initiative will run from September 10 to 15 with the aim of raising £30,000. Among the hospices to benefit will be Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THe company will donate £5 for each registered customer who makes a purchase during the event.

It has also pledged to give at least £20,000 to get the campaign off to the best possible start.

Rupert Green, the chairman of Covers, said: "THe Covers' Help for Hospices campaign has become an annual fixture on our company's calendar.

"We are delighted to be running this hugely successful campaign for a fourth consecutive year."

Volunteers from St Wilfrid's Hospice will be at Covers in Chichester on September 10 for a builders' bake off competition.

Weekend of culture will celebrate Blake A UNIQUE cultural experience by the sea is promised with this year's Blakefest in Bognor Regis.

THe annual arts festival will feature international art, music, poetry, talks and guided walks in homage to the famous poet and visionary, William Blake.

Blakefest 2018 is bigger and better than the earlier versions and will shed light on Blake's influence on the Sixties spirit of rebellion and freedom.

Headlining in the Alexandra THeatre in the Regis Centre will be 1990s new wave rebels, THe Lene Lovich Band, as well as the All THings Must Pass Orchestra with a celebration of the music of the visionary member of THe Beatles, George Harrison.

THe event will take place from September 14-16. Its main focus will be the all-day live music festival on September 15.

Festival director Rachel Searle said "THe William Blake and the spirit of the 60s event - including live music performances, poetry, arts and talks - is the centrepiece of the three-day celebration of the life and work of William Blake (1757-1827), who is nowadays recognised as a visionary poet, artist, engraver and prophet despite dying unrecognised and close to poverty."

Blake lived in the village of Felpham from 1800-1803. During that time, he saw visions of angels, was inspired to compose the text that became Jerusalem and also ended up on trial for assault and

sedition after an argument with a soldier outside one of the area's pubs.

After the success of last year's Blakefest, Ms Searle has gathered together different forms of art to celebrate Blake.

"Blake's work has spread through the generations, persistently inspiring groups of artists, beginning with THe Ancients, including Samuel Palmer, George Richmond and Edward Calvert, who all studied directly under Blake until his death," said Ms Searle.

"Modernists, such as James Joyce, clearly show Blake's influence and his influence also inspired such 60s beat generation poets and performers as Allen Ginsberg, Michael Horovitz, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Patti Smith."

THe 2018 line-up on September 15 is headlined by acclaimed post-punk and new wave legend, Lene Lovich.

Ms Searle said: "A 'purveyor of love songs for the weird', this performance is a real coup of Bognor and not to be missed as this will not be just a gig.

"Lovich and her superb band, headed

by Jude Rawlins, are a cut above and together create memorable eccentric dynamic events."

Second on the bill are the ten-piece All THings Must Pass Orchestra, with a range of songs by Harrison. Many of them are ingrained in popular culture.

Also performing on the night are rising star jazz vocalist Emily Dankworth, Mikey B Georgeson performing as Mr

Solo to delight the audience as an orginal British songwriter of lasting quality.

THe evening is being opened at 7pm by a talk on Blake and the 60s by the internationally-recognised and respected Tobias Churton to shed light on Blake's enduring contribution to our culture.

From mid-day, the Regis Centre's stuido will host an accompanying set of live music sessions headlined by the fastrising, exciting jazz combo, the Jamie Leeming Trio.

Jamie will also be accompanying the the Southdown Festival Poets.

Further poetry will come from the Surreal Man and the Nutter in the Shrubbery: Ciaran O'Driscoll and Margaret Farrelly with John Davies (aka Shedman) for an hour of scintillating poetry mixed with lyrical Celtic sounds.

Other performers are the varied and talented collection of artistes, Lem and the White Fire, THe Boy Wonders and David Farnan.

Alongside the wonderful music lineup there will be a graffiti art exhibition, literary walk, a free silent disco, bitesize talks and performance poetry.

Among the contributors will be Mikey B Georgeson with an art installation, An Actual Occasion, and Vincent Gray unveiling and discussing his possible Bognor Regis sculpture, Albion Rose, after his Keats sculpture in Chichester.

Barking up the right tree

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch, Mount Noddy, has recently undergone some positive changes, to work even more effectively in the local area to help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats in need.

Clare Palmer, previously branch manager, has now moved into a more specialised role as business and income generations manager. She will now be purely responsible for generating income, PR, overseeing the charity shop network and opening new shops, fundraising and volunteers.

Clare said: "I am very excited to be able to use my personable skills to continue to promote the branch, build the shop empire and generate income."

New animal centre manager, Susan Botherway, has spent the last five years managing various RSPCA London branches and has an extensive welfare and behaviour background.

She said: "After spending five years working with branches in central London building foster networks and outreach programs, I am looking forward to joining the Mount Noddy team and helping this south coast branch."

THe centre is extending it's opening hours to include Wednesdays and is planning to stay open longer during the day to be able to welcome more visitors.

THe self-funded branch, which

incorporates the well-known Mount Noddy Animal Centre at Eartham, relies on donations and kindness to keep the animal centre operating.

THe shops rely on donations of clothing (in any condition), bric-abrac, books, toys, shoes and bags and they directly fund the animal centre.

THe four local shops at Bognor Regis, Horsham, Chichester and Worthing are in a boutique style and you will always get a friendly welcome and find a bargain too. THe animal centre is currently looking for foster carers for resident dogs and cats, and donations

of treats, toys and peanut butter!

` Degree in holidays A DEBT-FREE degree is in prospect from Butlin's to help run its Bognor Regis resort.

THe holiday firm's parent company, Bourne Leisure, has launched a fully funded three-year BA Hons degree course in management practice.

Successful applicants on its chartered management degree apprenticeship will be paid while they study and have a guaranteed career when they graduate.

Friends walk 100 miles for city hospice appeal Former pupils are urged to register TIME is running out for former pupils of Chichester High School for Boys to be included in a commemorative booklet for its 90th anniversary.

THe celebrations for the milestone are taking place on October 20. THe organisers at the Old Cicestrians Association would like to include the names of all those who will be going along in the booklet - but the printing deadline is September 17. THose who book later than that will be omitted.

Age is just a number, except when looking for a job AS YOU are all aware if you’ve been reading my column, I moved here from London many years ago, what you may or may not know is that I own a recruitment agency.

I have been in recruitment as long as I’ve lived in Bognor. Never one to think I know it all…yeah right! THis year, I decided to put myself through the trauma of finding a job, as an experiment.

It has been over 15 years since I applied for a position. Bearing in mind, I didn’t have a CV, I knew I’d have to go back to basics.

I began trawling through job websites. I applied for more than 100 positions, mostly sales director positions. What I found was that most agencies didn’t acknowledge receipt of my CV or even call me to discuss.

I also found that my email address, which has my age on it, was a big mistake. Very quickly I amended my CV to not have any dates included, as it was obvious companies were ageist. I also realised I had to do a lot of chasing, constant phone calls and

befriending various agencies. Initially, I couldn’t believe I wasn’t snapped up and inundated with offers of interviews.

I was a qualified HR manager with years of sales experience. I admit I wasn’t up to date with buzz words such as ‘on-boarding’, which to those less in the know is induction, but I quickly caught on.

I was asked questions such as: “You’re a mother, how do you work and look after your children?"

I couldn’t say whether a man would have been asked the same thing, I like to think it would’ve been the case, but in my scepticism I’m unsure.

I did get invited for a couple of interviews. Mostly, first interviews are telephone interviews, this was a shock for me. I don’t see how you can get to know someone on the telephone, but this is the new way apparently. I did get invited for second interviews, these were young start-up companies that were big on buzz words and low on experience, and I was way too experienced.

What did I learn? If you’re in corporate, stay in corporate and climb the ladder. If you’re an independent, be prepared, it is difficult to get back into the corporate world. If you’re over 40 it is even more difficult. Age and experience can work against you and be prepared to alter your CV for the position you are applying for.

I learned to be appreciative of people applying to me for a job and to give everyone an opportunity regardless of age and sex, and 40-plus is still young.

New look Opus Loco is just the job, says Sarah WHEN Sarah Duke saw her recruitment agency Opus Loco trending on social media giant Twitter she knew a hit TV show featuring the business had made a huge impact.

Sarah, along with colleagues Oksana Simconok and Gaynor Heath, were filmed for a fly-on-the-wall Channel 4 documentary called British Workers Wanted, which revealed young people were more interested in being YouTube stars than working.

Courgettes have the 'cor' factor for health I HAD a phone call from a lovely lady today who wanted me to talk more about products farmed here in the UK to show support for the British farmers. I get lots of calls and wonderful emails weekly from my loyal followers, and I love all the different subjects people call me about, and are passionate about.

I had already made up my mind to discuss courgettes (Zucchini) in my column this week as my daughter has been sprializing (a machine that turns vegetables into noodles) them all week, to make vegetable pasta. As we speak, Britain’s courgettes are quickly reaching their deliciously sweet, nutty peaks.

THey’re often used to bulk out sauces and dishes like spaghetti bolognaise and lasagne, but here’s why I think courgettes should be enjoyed in their own right…

Left too long in the soil, they can grow huge and bloated with water. While these green monsters might look magnificent, the best tasting courgettes are the short, slim ones – the best things come in little packages! (I have said that my whole adult life standing at only 5ft 1in!)

If you’re trying to lose weight, then you should make the courgette number one on your shopping list. THey’re super low in calories because of their high water content so you can pretty much chomp to your heart’s content (providing you don’t deep fry them!).

THey may not pack the nutritional punch of other green vegetables (broccoli, kale etc.) but they do contain significant levels of potassium to control blood pressure and

vitamin C to boost your immune system. THe courgette’s thin dark skin is high in soluble fibre, which slows digestion and stabilises blood sugar levels – potentially getting rid of those pesky mid-afternoon sweet cravings.

Soluble fibre can also prevent constipation and help with those horrible IBS symptoms so many people endure.

You can buy courgettes from most big supermarkets as well as small farmers markets (when in season). Try to buy locally sourced courgettes as supermarkets are known for shipping vegetables thousands of miles despite them being in season a few minutes down the road.

When cooking, try not to cook courgettes with too much water as they can go quite soggy. THe best way to cook them is to get a good crunch. Slice them in thin chip shapes, place them on foil and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of salt, spices and herbs, then place under the grill until

You can eat these as a snack, or with a salad.

Alternatively, you can roast courgettes up with a selection of other vegetables to enjoy with classic meat and potatoes, or you can make Greek-style fritters on the BBQ with lots of chopped herbs such as garlic. Or you can eat them raw, and as mentioned, use a spiralizing machine to make them into spaghetti, which makes them more interesting.

When eating natural, locally in season foods, it makes you feel strong and positive. I believe the reason we get foggy, tired or demotivated is because our bodies just cannot cope with the amount of toxins we are subjected to on a daily basis through processed foods and pollution.

SAINSBURY’S is my port of call this week, partly because of their launch of some house wines and also as most of their wines tend to exude quality.

My first white wine selection was that of a Grande Réserve 2017 Bergerac Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, a wine not often seen in these parts.

THis aromatic, slightly off-dry white has lemony flavours with a touch of honeysuckle, a hint of nuttiness and is mellow with a flowery aftertaste - a good complement to fish and salmon in particular and seven readies will complete purchase thereof.

Next, I turned my attention to two bargain Sauvignon Blancs, one from Chile and the other a house wine from

the Western Cape of South Africa.

A 2018 (yes, 2018) Chilean Phantom River Sauvignon Blanc proved to be fruity with citrus and tropical fruits to the fore, a hint of lime and an impressive minerality reminiscent of French terroirs - at just £5 my undoubted bargain of the week!

THe house Sauvignon Blanc from the Western Cape is even cheaper, at £4.80, sporting lemon, lime and grapefruit flavours, if a tad watery compared to the Chilean example, but still perfectly acceptable party wine! For £8.50 expended, the 2016 Taste the Difference Greco di Tufo had a summer meadow nose, fragrant aromas and mineral complexity that comes from the region’s volcanic soils along with an abundance of exotic fruit flavours - a wine that would pair well with grilled tuna.

Four red wines then caught my eye with a £4.80 House Cabernet Sauvignon of Spanish provenance exuding blackcurrant, blueberry and vanilla flavours and proving to be eminently quaffable at this price, though lacking somewhat in complexity (as you might have expected!).

Santa Julia Reserve Malbec full-bodied red from the Uco Valley in Argentina and planted at elevations between 954 and 1,402m above sea level, a terroir that lends itself to concentration of aromas and flavours.

Community News & Views FAMILIES in the Post area are being urged to talk during the current organ donation week.

New figures show 35 people in West Sussex have died waiting for a transplant in the past five years.

THe tragic statistic still shows an urgent need exists for more people to support donation even though more people are supporting donating their loved one's organs.

NHS Blood and Transplant is urging more people in the area to tell their families they want to save lives through organ donation.

Last year, 70 people in West Sussex were given a new lift by a transplant. If more people agreed to donate, more lives would be saved in the county.

THere are around 6,000 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant across the UK in spite of the number of donors increasing.

Organ Donation Week has seen the NHS urge families to talk about donation with the message - Words Save Lives.

Anthony Clarkson, the interim director of organ donation and transplantation for NHS Blood Transplant, said: "It's tragic that so many people from West Sussex have died waiting for a transplant. What is shocking is that many of those lives could have been saved had more families agreed to donate organs.

"People are dying every day because some families are not talking about donation. We need more families in West Sussex to say yes to organ donation so that more lives can be saved."

He added: "We all know that organ donation legislation will change to a deemed consent system in England and Scotland in future years.

"But the harsh fact is people are dying right now waiting for an organ and it will still be important for people to know your decision."

A POTENTIAL multi-million pound funding cut could hit charities for homeless people across Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Labour county councillor Michael Jones has warned the reduction of West Sussex County Council's supporting people funding could cause a surge in the number of rough sleepers.

His concern was triggered by a late change in the council's forward plan which says most of the ÂŁ6m fund is set to be cut.

If the fund is scrapped, the current housing support contracts with charities and housing associations will start to be ended from next April. Among those affected will be Bognor Housing Trust and Stonepillow, which works in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Cllr Jones said the proposal by the Conservative-led council was callous and despicable. "Anyone who has seen first-hand the dedication of the staff at these organisations trying to help people in this terrible situation turn their lives around, and go forward with a roof over their heads, would not doubt for a second the benefit to the community they provide," he said.

"THe price it costs is relatively small as opposed to the costs that will undoubtedly emerge if they aren't there, particularly to the health service and the police. In the meantime, I fear these cuts will trigger an epidemic of homelessness."

County council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured above, said consultation about the future funding of supported housing projects would begin this month.

"Supported housing projects help a number of vulnerable people including those who are homeless, rough sleepers and exoffenders," she said.

"We no longer have dedicated funding for housing support from central government and the services we provide are not statutory, unlike many others which are under pressure. We recognise that making savings in this area could lead to an increase in pressure on other services in the long run.

"We will work closely with our partners in the voluntary sector and other local authorities to find ways to keep the impact of any funding changes to a minimum."

Let us have completely free parking on a Saturday, except for controls on the roads around the railway station, with regard to the movement of buses. Maybe places can be found for a park and ride service.

When I was very young in the fifties, the town was full of people all day with families with their children. It was a social occasion. So, councillors put away your party hats and make every Saturday a party.

Councillors are not there to do what they think is best for Bognor. THey are there to do what the people want.

WORKING healthcare professionals will have a new centre in Chichester next month where they can develop their skills.

THe University of Chichester is to launch the centre for workforce development in October to act as a place for associated and applied research, knowledge transfer and continuing development activity.

Courses and learning sessions will be available to social work and healthcare professionals, pictured above, in and around West Sussex.

Chris Smethurst, the university's head of its department of childhood, social work and social care, said: "A knowledgeable and empowered workforce is key to the future success of the NHS, which is why we are launching our centre for workforce development.

"We have success, experience and scope for incentivising and researching key workforce development strategies.

"THis includes building resilience to bring about effective change via mentorship, coaching and action-learning within the context of the NHS and social care, mental health, child protection, early childhood, education and adult services."

THe centre will form part of the university's department of childhood, social work and social care. THis has a regional reputation for working in collaboration with nearby government authorities and partners in the further and higher education sectors.

It also hosts the university's postgraduate research facility for social policy and has links with Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The history of Priory Park from 1850 - Part one

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at the Novium Museum STARTING in September, the Novium Museum is holding an exhibition that celebrates the centenary of Priory Park, which became a public space for the citizens of Chichester in 1918. THis display will be highlighting the wonderful and varied uses of this popular park over the last 100 years.

Priory Park has existed as an open space for some years, having been laid out as a recreation ground and ornamental park by the Priory Park Society in 1850. THe society leased the land from the 5th Duke of Richmond. Admission to the park at this time was limited to subscribing members of the society. All subscribers to the society were entitled, for the payment of an extra shilling, to have their own gate key.

In May, 1918, the 7th Duke of Richmond sent a letter to the Mayor of Chichester, Cllr Sharp Archibald Garland, declaring his intention to gift Priory Park to the city of Chichester as a memorial to the Great War.

Although the Great War had not yet ended, the conveyance ratifying the gift of Priory Park was executed on September 30, 1918.

In July, 1919, the city council held a celebration of peace in the park. THe day began with a grand victory parade, marching through the city streets to the park. Here, a commemorative tree was planted, after which ex-servicemen were invited to partake in ‘light refreshments’ in the Guildhall. THe adults then enjoyed sports on the nearby recreation ground, while children’s events continued in Priory Park.

Even prior to the gifting of the park to the citizens of Chichester, the park had already been utilised as the location for numerous celebrations including Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee (1897), the coronation of King Edward VII (1902), the coronation of King George V (1911) and Empire Day celebrations (1912). THis tradition continued with celebrations for the silver jubilee of King

George V and Queen Mary in May, 1935, as well as the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May, 1937.

THey are currently utilised as the toilet and shower facilities for the clubhouse. A static water tank was also built to the south-west of the Guildhall.

THe threat of bombing raids was ever present in the city and an assessment saw that existing facilities would not be able to cope with the threat of fire spreading through the city. On March 11, 1941, the regional fire inspector recommended a 100,000 gallon

concrete tank be built in Priory Park. THe work proceeded straight away under the direction of the city engineers department.

It is believed to have been removed by the mid-1950s.

Many local people remember fondly the yearly Gala Day, which was the highlight of the city’s calendar for some 30 years. THe first Gala Day took place in 1955. It was organised

by Chichester Combined Charities with the aim of raising money for local charity organisations. THe main events took place in Priory Park, interspersed with a colourful parade and carnival procession through the city streets.

Country Centre Cafe Support Volunteer – Aldingbourne Trust The Aldingbourne Trust is dedicated to helping local businesses, communities and people with learning disabilities to reach their potential and enjoy life, together.

They are committed to the support and well-being of people with learning disabilities; developing their skills, helping them gain employment in the local community and encouraging them to lead more fulfilled, independent lives. At the Aldingbourne Country Centre, they run a very successful cafe/restaurant that clients and members of the public use; they provide hot meals, sandwiches, a lot of cakes and refreshments. They have a number of clients working in the kitchen who need support and guidance and they are looking for a volunteer who is patient and happy to guide and teach the clients to encourage them to increase their skills.

Business Adviser – Young Enterprise Arun and Chichester Young Enterprise need volunteers to act as Business Advisers to teams of students (aged 14 - 19) in local schools who will be running a real company for the next

The role is to provide support to the

students where necessary, and also to help the tutor with paperwork. They are looking for someone who is willing to learn to communicate with people who may have limited verbal skills; to encourage people to take part in the group activity and also to assist the tutor with paperwork throughout the year as necessary.

Club Leader – 4Sight Vision Support 4Sight Vision Support is a charity supporting people with sight loss and a membership organisation, based in West Sussex. The Club Leader role is to organise/run a social club for visually impaired people with support from 4Sight head office. Tasks will include: organising transport for members via a team of volunteer drivers by liaising with both parties; delegating tasks to volunteer helpers such as refreshments and setting up the venue; organising games such as quizzes, bingo etc. and arranging for outside entertainers to visit the club; organising occasional outings like pub lunches or afternoon teas; keeping accounts regarding club entry fees and petty cash; ensuring the venue is secure and locked after the club and left the same way as was found and having regular contact with club members outside of the club’s running hours.

Heather and Dawling put on 252 as PostSport Middleton openers seal Ifield win MIDDLETON CC saved their best to last, producing a convincing display to round off their Sussex Premier season on a high.

THe Sea Lane side put Ifield to the sword and cruised to a 166-run victory over the already relegated side.

Skipper Sean Heather led the way, smashing 127 in a 252-run stand with fellow opener Jack Dawling (102).

By the time they had finished, Middleton had amassed a total of 316-4 from their 50 overs. In reply, Craig Fowle was the star taking 4 for 22 as Ifield were dismissed for 150.

It wrapped up an impressive win for Middleton, who have struggled to find consistency this season.

After finishing the campaign third bottom, Middleton will have plenty to work on over the winter to ensure that next season they are looking up rather than down in 2019.

In Division Two,, Bognor Regis finished the year on an upward trend by defeating bottomside Bexhill by four wickets at the Regis Oval.

After putting the visitors in to bat, an excellent all-round bowling dismissed them for just 120. Sam Adams (3-31) led the way with Josh Sargeant (2-22) and Andrew Greig

(2-7 from seven overs) lending support.

In reply, Bognor struggled to get going in pursuit of a relatively small target. Every batter got a start but was unable to push on.

Skipper Ryan Maskell (22) was the highest score as the home side reached the total with four wickets and more than 20 overs to spare.

THe win ensured Bognor leapfrogged Chichester Priory Park to finish sixth in what has been an extremely competitive division this season.

Chi completed their fixtures with a defeat against promotion-chasing St James's Montefiore at Goodwood.

Set 220 to win, Priory never looked like reaching their target as only Matthew Bennison (61) stood up to the visitors' bowlers.

Even a late rally from captain Matthew Geffen (26*) at number 11 was unable to lift Chi as they were bowled out for 138.

In Division THree West, Pagham wrapped up a top half finish with a narrow 16-run win at Stirlands CC. Half centuries from Jack Stannard (76) and Ryan Barratt (69) put them on their way to a score of 210-4 before the hosts were restricted to 194-9, as Justin Scott took 5 for 21.

DARTS: As the season nears its end, the Divisional Pairs knockouts of the Bognor Summer Darts league took place at the Newtown Social Club.

More than 70 players took part in the event and delivered some extremely competitive action in the process.

First up was the Division 3 competition which saw 12 pairs take to the oche.

After overcoming their team mates in the semi final, Newtown Clubbers duo Simon Mitchell & Tony Miles made it through to take on another couple of familiar faces in Graeme Dutton & Ian Kewin, pictured below, (also Newtown Clubbers).

After splitting the first legs, the decider saw a 135 from Dutton followed by a ton from Kewin. THis gave them the lead they needed, and with 58 left Dutton hit the double, taking the Division 3 Pairs Champions title for 2018.

In Division Two, the final pitched Andy Chant & Dave Bourne (Aldwick Legion) versus Adam Hall & Adam Judd, pictured below (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

THe Legion pair went first, but Judd replied hitting the only 180 of the night with his first throw. Scores of 140, 60 and 91 followed leaving just 30 left which Judd hit with his second dart to seal a 13 dart leg and 1-0 lead.

THe second leg saw a slower start from both sides, but Hall hit another 140 to take the massive lead. With 32, left Judd hit the double with his second dart to take the 2018 title.

In Division 1, 13 pairs took to the oche.

Last year's champions Gary Blackwood & Gary Bryant (THe Legends) could only make it into round one where they lost to Dave Owens & Colin Mace (Friary Z).

THe pair made it through to the final where they took on Mark Sheppard and Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares).

Youthful Chi chase first league victory

CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping a return to home comforts will pay dividends as they look to secure their first win of the season.

THe Blues kicked off their London South One campaign last weekend with a narrow 22-15 loss to recently-relegated Westcombe Park.

A losing bonus point seemed scant reward for a youthful Chi team who are in rebuilding mode after the retirement of key personnel following last season.

Scott Ashley's side will have chance to go one better tomorrow when they welcome Southampton-based Tottonians to Oaklands Park (3pm).

With the visitors losing their opener by just two points, the match will be a good test of Chi's credentials for the coming year.

THere were plenty of positives to take from the opening day trip to south east London.

With the retirement of Jack Bentall and Jack Arden-Brown, the side was captained by Charlie Wallace with Dane Gingell coming in

at hooker. Ben Polhill started his 22nd season in the 1st XV as blindside flanker.

After falling behind to an early penalty, Chichester reacted positively Following a line out, the ball was passed swiftly along the line and a powerful run from Ben Robson breached the opposition defence for a try.

Converted. 3 - 7.

But Blues were unable to build on their momentum and, just before the break, the home side rounded off a maul to take a 10-7 lead at half time.

Coombe came out after the break full of purpose and scored two further tries in the second period.

Chi increased the tempo looking for a way through the well organised defence. Despite conceding a number of penalties, Coombe held firm until a well worked move across the pitch put Alex Taylor in at the corner, for Blues' second five-pointer.

Try as they might, though, Chi were unable to find another score to level things up.

THe Hares pair got off to a quick start with Sheppard starting with 121 and a ton, followed by 85 from Phillips. Owens and Mace just caught up, but the first leg double was hit by Sheppard.

THe second leg saw Sheppard start with a ton, followed again by 85 from Phillips.

A 121 and 95 from Owens pulled them in closer, but Mace could only leave 20.

Owens and Mace then both missed the doubles on their next throws, giving Sheppard another go at double 2 which he hit with his second dart.

THe throw secured the leg and the match ensuring the pair, pictured below, took the Bognor Summer Darts Division 1 Pairs title for 2018.

Hawks are in Lions sights as Pagham hunt FA cup shock

Softball event big hit in Chi ORGANISERS of Chichester's first ever international senior softball tournament have vowed to do it all again after the initial staging proved to be a big hit.

THe co-ed fast-pitch tournament brought five teams from across Europe to take part in competition in Oaklands Park.

Dridma Rivas from Spain, Paris Patriots from France and a Great British Under 19 squad were among those to play in the Chichester Falconsorganised contest.

Featuring a round robin, a home run derby and two playoff rounds, there was plenty to keep the international cohort busy in what was a fun-filled weekend.

David Morris, manager of the Falcons, who organised the event, said: "We definitely want to do this again next year “With a longer day there is capacity for eight teams, so now that we’ve proven the event can work in Chichester, we hope to have more teams from Europe enter next year.”

As well as the international visitors, Wes Knapp brought a Meteors team from London, calling on the services of some Danish friends to fill his roster,

while Ian Tomlin fielded a young team of GB players, including Oliver Howley and Bronte Harvey from Chichester.

THese two teams dominated the round robin, with the Meteors winning all four matches to take the crown.

MVP prizes were awarded to Josh Peat (GB) and Aida Caballero (Dridma Rivas) while Carina THorsland (Meteors) and Mason Brockway (GB) took the home run derby prize.

Even though bad weather brought a halt to proceedings before the play-off rounds, all in all the contest was deemed a big success.

It was a first for the Falcons who have put on a junior fastpitch tournament for the last two years.

But after playing in a handful of co-ed tournaments in Paris lately, manager David Morris decided to switch to a senior age group for 2018.

He said: "I am very pleased that Martha Moya (Spain) and Will Notue (France) were able to bring their teams to the UK – they are wonderful guests to have in our city and added perfectly to the flavour of the event”.

PAGHAM have history-making in their sights as they hope to spring a FA Cup shock against a side two divisions higher than them in the non-league football pyramid.

THe Lions welcome Bostik Premier side Whitehawk to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) in the first qualifying round of the knockout competition.

Pagham, who are third in the SCFL Premier and are still unbeaten this campaign, have nothing to fear from the match.

Win and they would equal the club's best ever performance in the knockout competition.

With a trip to Broadbridge Heath in the league on Tuesday (7.45pm), it will be a busy couple of days for Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side.

Pagham head into the double header in good form after a comfortable 6-3 victory over East Preston in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup. Callum Overton, Scott Murfin, Ryan Davidson and a George Gaskin hat-trick sealed the win for the Lions.

THe club also used the occasion to mark goalkeeper James Binfield playing his 250th match for the club.

Derby day awaits unbeaten Chi CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking to prove deja vu does exist by doing the double over local rivals Portsmouth.

Aaron Smith's side have made an impressive start to their new season, registering a 100 per cent record from their three matches so far.

THis included a rousing 4-2 league cup win over Pompey last weekend which saw Chi dominate from start to finish.

Goals from Helen Ogle, Jade Widdows and a second half double from player of the match Chloe Melton sealed the victory at Baffins Milton Rovers.

Chi do not have long to hold those local bragging rights - with the two teams meeting again, this time in the National South at Oaklands Park on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Before then, Smith's side make the trip to MK Dons Ladies on Sunday (2pm). With the hosts still without a win all year, Chi will be looking to seal all three points to ensure they go into the home derby with their confidence sky high.

Elsewhere, in men's football and SCFL Division One, Selsey will be looking to keep a five-match unbeaten record going as they

THe Blues came through a tough FA Vase preliminary tie with Mile Oak this past week, needing a replay to see off their league rivals in midweek.

Safe passage was eventually secured by goals from Dan Bassil, Ryan Morey and Tom Jefkins in the 3-0 win.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham are starting to find their feet under new boss Steve Bailey.

THe Sids beat Surrey side Bagshot 5-0 in the Vase last weekend, thanks to strikes from Morgan Forry (2), Robert Madden, Ben Mepham and Frazer Smith.

Next up is a home league match against Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

In SCFL Division Two Bosham are still seeking their first victory in spite of the new caretaker managers, Tony Hancock and Danny Mullen. THey have taken over from Dennis Hughes after the former Brighton & Hove Albion player told the club last week he wanted to leave just a couple of months after joining.

THe Robins are third bottom of the league without a point from their first four matches.

THe latest saw them defeated 3-2 at home to Worthing Town, Alex Barnes and Ben Bishop getting the goals. Bosham travel to bottom side Ferring tomorrow (3pm) with the hosts suffering a negative goal difference of 28.

Table-topping City look to extend run CHICHESTER City are well rested and still flying high as they return from a week off leading the way in the SCFL Premier.

Miles Rutherford's side have been in sparkling form at the start of the new campaign winning four of their opening five matches to leave them one point clear of nearest rivals Horsham YMCA. Key to their unbeaten league start has been a ruthless streak in front of goal with the side netting an average of three goals per game.

After a week off, because of receiving a bye in the FA Vase, Chi will be looking to pick up where they left off.

Next up for City are two home matches in the space of four days. First up is a visit from Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow (3pm)

before bottom side Loxwood make the trip to Oaklands Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

On paper, the two matches should deliver maximum points for Rutherford's side.

But, when finishing third last season, these were the types of matches where Chi came up short and dropped crucial points.

Peacehaven, in particular, have proved to be tough nuts for City to crack in recent years - with Rutherford's side taking three points from six from them last year.

But, with City in red hot form and ten of their players finding their way on to the scoresheet so far this campaign, the expectation from the Oaklands faithful is that their side will gain six points from six and preserve their place at the top of the table.

Free-scoring Rocks must cut out mistakes as FA cup looms Next Game

WHITSTABLE (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is calling on his players to cut out the defensive mistakes as they start out on the road to Wembley.

After a good start to life back in the Bostik Premier, the Rocks' attention switches to the FA Cup. THe first qualifying round of the competition has pitched Bognor against Bostik South East side Whitstable Town.

With £6,000 gifted to their winners, it could be a profitable trip to the Kentish coast tomorrow (3pm) for the Nyewood Lane side.

But Pearce has warned that his youthful side need to keep working on the defensive side of the game.

THe lack of concentration leading to silly errors was evident again as the Rocks defeated Kingstonian 3-1 in the league last time out.

THat win keeps the Rocks unbeaten with three wins and three draws from their opening half dozen matches.

Pearce said: "I was pleased with the result and pleased with all the efforts but we are still making defensive mistakes.

"It was from one of those that they scored and it is something we have to work on.

"THese things happen when you are putting a side together and when the players are young."

THe win against Kingstonian was sealed by two goals from the in-form Dan Smith and a Bradley Lethbridge strike.

It takes Bognor's goal tally for the season to 15, making them the joint top scorers in the league. But the veteran boss said there was still plenty to work on, especially in their own half. Pearce said: "THe reason the lads are playing at this level is they have weaknesses but also have strengths.

"THe name of the game is putting a squad together that can play to our strengths while covering our weaknesses.

"At the moment, we are not covering our weaknesses as well as we can."

THere will be plenty of scope for Bognor to improve when they head to the Kent coast.

After being promoted from the Southern Counties East division last term, THe Oysterboys have struggled at step four.

But they registered their first win of the season when they beat early pacesetters Ashford Town 1-0 at home last weekend.

THat result leaves them mid-table - 33 places below Bognor in the non-league pyramid.

Pearce said: "I don't know much about them but all cup games are difficult.

"While we play at a higher standard, they are at home and they beat a team that was top of the table 1-0 last time out.

"But, if we play to our full potential, then we will create lots of chances. It's just whether we can take them on the day."

Corey Heath is set to miss the trip but Keaton Wood could make a return.

Six grand reasons for cup run IT'S NOT been a competition that the Rocks have fared too well in recent years.

Aside from last season's run to the verge of the first round proper, it's been a few years since Jack Pearce's side have caused any major FA Cup shocks of their own.

But there will be a few thousand extra reasons for Bognor to try and progress in the world's oldest knockout competition this year.

With the doubling of the prize money by the FA, victory tomorrow away at Bostik South East side Whitstable Town in the first qualifying round could deliver a £6,000 windfall to the Nyewood Lane side.

Progression to the same stage as last season - when Bognor were defeated by fellow National South strugglers Oxford City - will inject £30,000 into the club's coffers.

For a club that does not have a major benefactor, such a sum would be a welcome boost, Pearce said: "We have not done brilliantly in it. It is always difficult and the games thrown up are never easy.

"It would be nice to have a run, especially given the doubling of the prize money.

"THat's always encouraging and all we can do is see where we can go with it."

OUR UNBEATEN run continues!

Six games into this Bostik Premier League season and we have three wins and three draws. Sitting nicely in the top five of the division, the goals are flying in for Bognor and this is fantastic to see.

My main worry at the moment, though, is injuries.

With Keaton Wood still not 100 per cent and Corey Heath having to play when not match fit, we are looking slightly vulnerable at the back.

But, luckily, with the likes of Chad Field and Tommy Block, falling back alongside them at the back, we have managed to hold teams to draws instead of losing games.

THe difference this year is that we have the fire power to set fear into other teams.

Dan Smith, who celebrated his birthday this past Wednesday, turning just 19, has been a revelation and Bradley Lethbridge has also made a great difference to the side.

Allowing Jimmy Muitt more freedom on the right hand side and other players to defend in numbers, we have been great in the counter attack as well.

Bringing in Archie Edwards has proved a good move with him playing at full back.

We can now release the likes of Harvey Whyte and Calvin Davies further forward up the field.

From an attacking point of view, I am happy and I just hope we can continue this momentum for as long as possible!

THe away trip to AFC Hornchurch was great and after coming home with a point (slowly, mind you, with that coach) I think everyone was happy with that.

We conceded a fairly poor goal straight from a corner which saw us share the points.

We almost couldn’t get the Rocks Radio to work as the club appeared to have no power supply around the

ground before kick off.

Eventually, Lee Roberts and I found the officials' stand at the Hornchurch Stadium - and with power!

THe Urchins are a decent football team but I am afraid the facilities are looking very tired and require some much needed TLC in my opinion.

But that’s non-league football grounds for you.

It was quite nice to visit the Dripping Pan again. Over the years, I have seen a fair share of wins, draws and losses against the Rooks.

It was end to end football and in front of nearly 900 fans, we experienced a great atmosphere.

It was awesome to see so many Rocks fans there to cheer on the lads. You can watch back Lethbridge’s wonder strike at Lewes on YouTube and I think he has cemented his place in that team following that performance.

I still think the likes of Mason Walsh and Harvey Sparks offer great competition in that same position though.

THe 3-3 score was a fair result in the end and a great game for the neutral - of course it would have been nice to win there but we can’t win them all.

Rocks bounced back to winning at home as we welcomed Kingstonian to Nyewood Lane.

We fully deserved the win and again looked deadly on the counter. THe K’s fans were clearly unhappy after the final whistle and a contingent made their feelings known directly to their manager as he exited the field.

Another three points at home!

Is Nyewood Lane becoming a fortress again? Or have I spoken too soon and jinxed it? (Sorry Rob).

THe FA Cup is back tomorrow as we travel to Whitstable Town. We can’t underestimate this side but it would be nice to get a bit of a run in this competition. I will see you all in Kent! Up THe Rocks!
