One week to go for footbridge

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WORK ON the Stockbridge footpath is due to be completed within a week or two, following months of delays.

Work on the replacement bridge began in January, with an original finish date of April but ‘unacceptable movement’ during testing in May led to engineers

being called back to try to solve the problem.

THe current works will not be carried out over this bank holiday weekend to ease traffic congestion in the area.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “We look forward to opening the new Stockbridge footbridge soon and we are sorry for the delay. During our routine testing we identified an issue that could cause the walkway to move unacceptably

in certain conditions.

"We have been looking at engineering solutions that reduce this movement to allow safe and comfortable use of the walkway over the bridge. We still expect to open the new footbridge as soon as this work is complete.”

A letter was sent to residents in the area at the beginning of last week to explain what was happening.

It said: "I am writing to advise that

A-one+, on behalf of Highways England will be carrying out works to mitigate the oscillation to the footway following the replacement and refurbishment of the Stockbridge Footbridge on the A27 Chichester, West Sussex earlier this year.

"THe works will consist of the installation of column stiffeners, footpath works and painting to allow the reopening of the footbridge."

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HOUSE of Fraser in Chichester may be saved after Mike Ashley's Sport Direct has agreed to purchase the chain for £90m.

THe deal was announced just hours after the department store chain went into administration.

THe future of House of Fraser was confirmed with the closure of over 30 stores back in June after it filed in the court, on Wednesday, June 6, proposals for company voluntary arrangements (CVAs).

Bosses of the department store said without the proposals, House of Fraser has no viable future and they are central to the significant restructuring of the business.

However, Mr Ashley said his plan was to turn the 59-store chain in to the "Harrods of the High Street".

Sports Direct said in a statement: "THe group has acquired all of the UK stores of House of Fraser, the House of Fraser brand and all of the stock in the business."

Sports Direct already held an 11 per cent stake in the department store chain, which had been intending to close 31 shops under a now-abandoned restructuring plan.

Previously, following a comprehensive review of the group’s entire property portfolio, the directors of the companies had identified 31 stores for closure, including Chichester, which was set to remain open until early in 2019.

City Councillor, Richard Plowman said: "If Sports Direct can keep House of Fraser in Chichester going, it would be good news but we must wait before celebrating as there are still problems with the distribution and, as is so often in takeovers of this type, more issues come to light.

"I still puzzle why the Chichester store was on the original list given all the recent surveys on how resilient and attractive Chichester is.

"Are we being complacent about the high cost of rents, rates and parking charges I wonder and the House of Fraser decision was a real wake up call?"

THe Chichester Post contacted Chichester BID for a statement who refused to comment.

FAMILIES and pet dogs are invited to gather for a fun pet dog show and BBQ at Canine Partners’ Southern Training Centre.

Dozens of people are expected to attend the event in Heyshott, near Midhurst on Saturday, September 15 with their pet dogs to raise vital funds for assistance dog charity Canine Partners.

THe charity trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening and closing doors and dressing a person.

THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

THe dog show includes categories such as handsomest chap, loveliest lady and best ears.

THere will also be demonstrations of what Canine Partners’ amazing dogs can do, a delicious BBQ, refreshments and the chance to win fantastic prizes in the tombola.

THe event will take place between 11am and 4pm.

Tickets can be purchased on the gate for £2 per adult and 50p per child. Dogs enter the event for free.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A MINISTRY of Defence Employers Recognition Silver Award has been awarded to Chichester College Group’s support for Armed Forces personnel – past, present and future.

To achieve the award, employers must demonstrate their commitment to the Armed Forces Community, which includes reservists, veterans and their families.

THe Silver award particularly recognises work in ensuring Armed Forces personnel are not unfairly disadvantaged in the workplace.

It follows last year’s signing of an Armed Forces Covenant, at which

Chichester College pledged its support and demonstrated that it recognises the value of serving personnel, veterans, reservists and military families and has vowed to be Armed Forces-friendly.

THat involves everything from helping veterans – of all ages – gain education and training as well as employment to supporting staff who are reservists.

Many of the staff at Chichester College have a background in the Armed Forces – including Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College group chief executive, who served in the Army.

Shelagh said: “We are proud to have achieved the Silver Award in recognition of our commitment to supporting veterans, reservists and the Armed Forces community.

“We recognise the value of supporting

employees from a military background.

THe experience, knowledge and skills veterans and reservists bring to our colleges is immense.

"It is our honour to champion our servicemen and women – past, present and future.”

Rob Giles, head of learning for sports and public services at Chichester College, previously spent 26 years serving in the Royal Navy, before joining the college.

Within his department, he currently employs five former servicemen and women. He said: “I think the college really recognises that armed forces veterans have skills that transfer brilliantly into the further education environment.

“THey bring a lot of benefits, not just in terms of professional skills but attitude as well."

"In order to carry out these works as efficiently and as safely as possible, work will be undertaken using a combination of lay-by, westbound left lane closure and two full overnight closures."

Work began last week and is due to finish on Monday, September 3.

For the safety of residents living on Queens Avenue, Queens Gardens and Withery Way, escorted access has been provided.

Residents who have had to gain access to their property have been required to approach Whyke roundabout where a gateman has allowed them access to be escorted in.

A Donnington Parish Council spokesperson said: "THe parish council will be pleased to see the reopening of the footbridge across the A27, but has not had the date of September 3 confirmed as yet.

"THe footbridge is the safest and most accessible route into town for Donnington residents. As many people are aware, the Parish Council has been liaising with AOne+, to bring about improvements to the temporary arrangements for crossing the A27, especially for those with mobility issues.

"For these individuals in particular, the reopening will be very welcome.

In addition, the school holidays are almost over and the A27 footbridge is a much safer route for schoolchildren crossing the road.

"All Donnington residents will look forward to getting back to normal after many months of temporary arrangements."

A 50mph speed reduction on the westbound carriageway between Whyke Roundabout and Stockbridge Roundabout has also been in place.

Cllr Jamie Fitzjohn of West Sussex County Council said: "My understanding is that work is starting on repairing the bridge and I am looking forward to the bridge opening shortly.

"Donnington Parish Council Cllr John Ridd and I met with Highways England and the contractor a few weeks ago for an open and frank meeting. We were advised that a solution was imminent.

"Concerns were raised about the lack of communication from Highways England and the contractor which was accepted by both and apologies made.

THe contractor is now sending over a weekly update to the parish clerk and me.

"With regards to the canal anti social behaviour issues, I am meeting with the Police Inspector for Chichester to discuss policing levels and presence within the area and ways forward."

` Man in court A MIDHURST man is to appear in court charged with causing the death of his baby son.

Christopher Barnes, 28, a heating engineer, of Barlavington Way, Midhurst, has been charged with manslaughter, and with causing grievous bodily harm, following the death in June 2017 of his son, Harry, who was aged ten weeks.

Barnes has been bailed to appear at Worthing Magistrates Court on September 11.

A 25-year-old woman, who had also been arrested and interviewed on suspicion of manslaughter, will not be prosecuted.

Harry died on June 25 last year at hospital in Southampton, following admission from his home address in Barlavington Way on the previous day.

THe charges, authorised by the CPS, follow an investigation by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, and detailed forensic examination which established that death had resulted from an internal head injury.

` Burglary in Whyke POLICE received a report of a burglary to a property in Whyke Lane, Chichester on Tuesday.

THe burglary took place while the owners were on holiday, sometime between August 11 and August 21. Entry to the property was via a broken back door and jewellery and bank cards are reported taken.

Operation sees 12 arrests made

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SUSSEX Police led operation has seen the arrest of 12 people in less than eight hours in connection to a Goodwood assault.

Officers assisted by Hampshire Constabulary conducted the warrants across Southampton and Gosport in the early hours of THursday, August 16.

THe suspects were arrested following the large altercation at the racecourse in Chichester on Saturday, May 5.

Sussex Police would still like to identify the three men pictured in connection with the assault.

THe suspects are all believed to be from the Gosport, Hampshire, area.

THe officer in charge of the operation Ceri Spratt of the Chichester Investigations team said: “We have worked hard alongside Goodwood and Hampshire Constabulary to identify and arrest the 12 suspects last week.

"THe video of the altercation was widely circulated on social media at the time and this level of violence is unacceptable.

“We worked robustly with Hampshire Constabulary officers to bring each of them into custody and welcome the charging decisions by the Crown Prosecution Services.

“We believe the three men in the pictures were also part of the altercation and we would like to speak to them about this incident.

“If you recognise these men, please report information to us immediately."

Of the 12 men, ten were charged with violent disorder, one was charged for actual bodily harm and another was released under investigation for violent disorder.

THe ten men charged with violent disorder were: James Whitlock, 25, of Outer Circle, Southampton; Michael Suffield, 29, of Avery Lane, Gosport, Hampshire; Jack Cooper, 22, of Hillyfields; Nursling, Southampton; Darius Wharton, 18, of Honister Close, Southampton; David Salway, 28, of Mill Pond, Gosport, Hampshire; Kyle Binns, 26, of Wessex Lane, Southampton, Hampshire, Jack McLoughlan, 23, of Outer Circle, Southampton, Hampshire; Mike Hand, 32, of Lees Lane, Gosport, Hampshire; Tyrone Sharp, 27, of Jervis Drive, Gosport, Hampshire; Peris Dore, 27, of Whitworth Road, Gosport.

THey were all bailed and will appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 25 September.

One defendant, Lesley Sharp, 39, of Jervis Drive, Gosport, was charged with actual bodily harm and will appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on September 25.

A further suspect, a 29-year-old man from Gosport, was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and released under investigation.

Petworth House's artwork is debated on new TV show

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PORTRAIT at the National Trust’s Petworth House in Sussex, purchased as a Titian, but downgraded in the 20th century, is under the spotlight in BBC Arts’ third episode of Britain’s Lost Masterpieces.

THe 16th century portrait of a young cardinal was first acquired as a Titian by the 3rd Earl of Egremont at Petworth, an illustrious collector of art and patron of JMW Turner, and was first recorded in the Petworth collection around the 1820s.

In later years however it was questioned whether the painting was really by Titian’s hand. THe styling of the setting and use of paint is similar to other Titian works but it had been felt that the portrait lacked his psychological insight and dynamic use of paint and so it had been reattributed as ‘in the manner’ of Titian.

In the Petworth House episode, art historian Dr Bendor Grosvenor and social historian Emma Dabiri explore whether the work was wrongly downgraded and if the portrait is by the hand of the Italian artist.

THe quality and detail of the face in the portrait gives Bendor Grosvenor hope but clumsy later additions make it more difficult to reach a clear-cut answer.

THe episode follows the specialist

cleaning and the x-ray and infrared techniques used, before the portrait is shown to leading Titian expert, Professor Peter Humfrey, to make the final decision.

Andrew Loukes, House and Collections Manager at Petworth House, said ‘It has been thrilling to follow the research and analysis that has been carried out for

the programme. We’re looking forward to the big reveal and redisplaying the portrait back in the Marble Hall for visitors to enjoy once more.’

Petworth House has one of the finest collections of art and sculpture in the care of the National Trust. If the portrait is verified as a Titian it will join two other works by the Italian artist in the

collection, alongside works by Van Dyck, Turner, Gainsborough and Reynolds.

THe Britain’s Lost Masterpieces series is produced by Tern Television, Belfast.

` Police reports POLICE have confirmed they are seeing an increase in reporting of vehicles being broken into at rural car parks on Chichester District.

Over the past week there have been 16 reported offences.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: "When away from home, if possible choose car parks with attendants or CCTV. Take particular care when parking at beauty spots and in the countryside – although the scenery make look idyllic you still need to be cautious."

In Hangar Drive, Tangmere on Wednesday, August 8, police received a report of a shed having been broken into and fishing equipment and tools stolen. Serial 1419 of 08/08.

In Terminus Road, Chichester, on Tuesday, July 31, CCTV showed an unknown person entering an office and stealing a charity pot from the counter before promptly leaving the premises. Serial 0068 of 09/08.

Race in memory of Goodwood legend THE LADBROKES March Stakes, a Group 3 race taking place at Goodwood’s August Bank Holiday fixture on Saturday 25, will be run in the memory of local trainer John Dunlop.

Mr Dunlop, who sent out more than 3,500 winners from his Arundel stables in West Sussex, sadly died at the beginning of July. A man who embodied the spirit of Goodwood, he was crowned champion trainer in 1995 and sent out a total of ten British Classic winners, including two Epsom Derby victories with Shirley Heights (1978) and Erhaab (1994).

A previous Director of Goodwood Racecourse, John enjoyed nearly 200 winners on the Downs, starting with Storm Bird taking the 1967 New Ham Stakes and including one of his career highlights, when the Pat Eddery-ridden Posse landed the 1980 Sussex Stakes. In addition to these successes, John trained Sheikh Mohammed’s first ever Group race winner at Goodwood, when Hatta won the Molecomb stakes in 1977.

THe patriarch of a training dynasty, John leaves his wife Sue and two youngest sons, Ed and Harry, who have been training since 1994 and 2006 respectively.

Ed Dunlop said: “On behalf of the family, we are extremely delighted to have a race run in my father’s honour. Goodwood was his favourite racecourse in the world and he was also a director, so to have a prestigious race for him there is fantastic.”

Ladbrokes sponsor all seven races on the Saturday, one race on Friday 24, three on Sunday 26 and are the official Betting Partner of the fixture.

Nicola McGeady, head of racing PR at Ladbrokes, said: “We are very excited to

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN AUTHOR from Chichester is holding a book launch and family fun day, bringing a touch of Asia to Chichester.

Five years after the launch of Laura Pauley's first book which documented the struggle of bringing a baby into the world alone, she decided to take her daughter backpacking around Asia.

Laura and daughter, Summer stayed with a THai family in their tree house who couldn’t speak English as well as in orphanages after they had spent a year before visiting, fundraising for them.

After discovering she was pregnant, Laura found herself single, homeless and jobless and in 2010 released a book about her struggle called My Summer Bump.

THis diagnosis resulted in temporary memory problems and numerous hospital admissions, making the release of the book within the same year (not to mention juggling a newborn, toddler and nine-year-old) a huge achievement.

Offering a ‘taste of Asia’ to Chichester and surrounding areas, Laura is bringing the book into the world by hosting an Asian party that will be open to the public.

THe book’s official launch is Saturday, September 15 at Lavant Memorial Hall between 1pm and 5pm.

` Lakeside brawl POLICE were called to attend Lakeside caravan park in Runcton near Chichester after a report of a fight at 12.45am on Tuesday.

Police attended and established a verbal argument between two men had escalated in one of the caravans.

THe men were known to each other.

THe victim, a 44-year-old man from Birmingham, suffered a minor injury to his face but did not need hospital treatment.

A 33-year-old man, also from Birmingham, was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and remains in custody.

` Missing John POLICE are trying to trace John King, 45,of no fixed address, after he was reported missing in the Chichester area at 11.30am on Wednesday, August 15.

John, who is considered vulnerable due to mental health issues, is described as white, 6', with brown collar length hair and a full beard.

He has an Irish accent. He was last seen wearing a black jumper, black trousers and black shoes.

District's fire heroes give up time to raise vital funds

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FIREFIGHTERS from across the district volunteered their time to help raise funds for charity by climbing 17,696 metres.

THe firemen and women from Chichester city, Witterings, Midhurst and Selsey all selflessly gave up their

time on Saturday to take part in the Mount Everest Ladder Climb at the Chichester Assembly Rooms.

THis is the third event of its kind and this year saw the brave heroes climbing the equivalent of the ascent and descent of Mount Everest.

Organised by Darren Kilmister and Ian Sinfield, two local firefighters, the event saw hundreds of people gather at

Ian said: "THe first year we climbed Everest, last year we climbed Everest and Kilimanjaro and

this year is going up and down Everest.

"We didn't really have a target or time scale in mind but it's been really good and we've gone a lot quicker than we thought we would.

"About 25 to 30 firefighters have taken part, many who have given up their own

time and others who are actually on call too. It's been a really popular event with the public with so many getting involved of all ages. We have a special harness for members of the public for safety.

"We have been really lucky with so many local businesses donating some fantastic prizes for our tombola and NJS donated the scaffolding free of charge."

A ladder was placed against the 10m high scaffolding on the Assembly Rooms and three poles were placed to help the firefighters get down.

Sally Jones from Bracklesham was passing by and stopped to see what was happening.

She said: "I think it's just fantastic to see these brave men and women giving up their time to do this. It's really something very special."

THe event was raising money for THe Firefighters Charity which helps provide rehabilitation and support to injured firemen and women.

THe charity deals with post-operative care as well as post traumatic stress disorder and physiotherapy.

THe charity has been going for over 50 years and relies on donations looking after those who have been injured physically but also those who have suffered with unseen injuries including disasters such as the Grenfell Tower. Full steam ahead with vintage fun at the Weald and Downland Museum

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to the Weald and Downland Museum did not run out of steam as they attended the annual Vintage and Steam show at the weekend.

A fantastic selection of demonstrations and exhibits were on offer for all the family including enthusiasts or those unfamiliar with miniature, full size and model steam engines.

An arena was set up which hosted a parade of vehicles in various categories including military cars, motorcycles, full size steam engines, classic and vintage cars and miniature steams.

THe James Horton's Vintage Fair gave visitors the chance to ride steampowered gallopers and there was an Austin car ride and a fairground.

Model displays could be found dotted around in the houses, including steam boats from the Portsmouth & District Model Power Boat Club which were also sailing on the mill pond and train sets from the Bognor Regis Model Railway Club.

Treasurer Dave Ives from the club said: "THe kids seem to really enjoying looking at the train sets and it gives them an opportunity to control them.

"We have been here for the last four of five years and it seems really popular. It is surprising with some of the children who play and then say they have one at home,

but this gives them a chance to see a big, decent layout."

Becky Tipper from Bognor Regis attended with her two daughters, nineyear-old Emma and Abby aged 11.

Emma was really enjoying the show.

She said: "It's really good here. THere are lots activities and it's not just for adults.

I went on the merry-go-round and we had a picnic while watching the steam engines. I think they are really fascinating and I like seeing how they all work."

Mum Becky said they hadn't been for about three years but they had visited the museum earlier in the week to see THe Railway Children. She added: "It was a fascinating show and we enjoyed an evening picnic."

Little ones could also meet and greet their favourite engine with a Victoria the traction engine as a special guest on display. THe star of the hit series of children's story books, Victoria's Torton Tales was in steam and on display for guests to have a photo with.

Steam fair enthusiast Linda Pollington from Yatpon visited with her husband Myrddin, daughter Tracey Petter and her husband Kevin from Felpham and their three daughters, Bryony aged 12, Anya aged ten and Tayla aged seven.

Tayla had her face painted for free as a unicorn and was really excited to see the steam engines on parade.

She said: "Me and my granddad are making a steam train at the moment. I really like it here and I like seeing all the

engines."

Tracey added: "We all love steam engines in our family. When I was younger, we used to go to steam fayres as a family and have really nice holidays.

"You worry that this sort of thing will die off and so we feel it's important to teach the kids about it and get them involved. We just have a huge passion for it. My dad, who has sadly passed away, really inspired us to love it.

"We really like the Weald and Downland. We are members so we come here often. It's good for the girls and it's just so beautiful so it's an added bonus that they have a steam fayre too."

Bryony said: "I really like it. It's fun and really interesting. I really like looking at all the art work on the vehicles and enjoy the music they play."

A spokesperson for the museum said: "THe weekend saw an impressive lineup of full-size and model steam engines on display and working. Vintage music and a themed tea tent, local crafts and traditional demonstrations, plus arena displays, entertained 6,000 visitors.

"Also on display were commercial vehicles, military vehicles, miniature steam engines, model boats, and classic cars. THe ever popular gallopers ride took centre stage in the small traditional vintage fairground and families enjoyed rides on the narrow gauge steam railway."

Debate continues over Vélo

` Stolen vehicle A CAR was stolen when a house was burgled in East Wittering.

Overnight between Wednesday, August 16 and THursday, August 16, a house in Church Road, East Wittering, was entered and the keys to a red Nissan Quashqai saloon were taken. THe car was then taken from outside the address.

Detective Constable Emma Fields of the West Sussex Community Investigation Team said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the area over that night.

"We have been told that it is possible other residents in the area may have had their vehicles broken into that night but haven't so far reported it. If that is so we would ask them to come forward too.

"Local residents are also asked to check their CCTV and dashcams for that period in case something relevant might have been recorded.

"If you can help in anyway please contact us online or by calling 101, quoting serial 253 of 16/08."

THe 100-mile cycling event, which starts and finishes at Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday, September 23, will take cyclists on an unforgettable journey on closed roads through the spectacular countryside of West Sussex.

With thousands of cyclists riding for charity, Vélo South is expected to raise a substantial amount for both local and national charities but has been met with controversy over road closures and campaign groups.

3,000 supporters have backed a campaign called Stop Vélo South which is unhappy about the lack of communication from West Sussex County Council and the organisers of the event.

However, community events have been organised by others to celebrate the event. In Lavant, the parish council is organising a ‘Cycling Sunday’ event for all age groups.

As well as a best-dressed bicycle competition supported by Lavant Primary School and THe Royal Oak, ‘Dr Bike’ will be offering free bike repair and maintenance advice while West Sussex County Council’s Bikeability Team will be overseeing fun cycling activities.

Picnics are welcome and refreshments will be available for local residents at the Memorial Hall.

Vélo South is set to provide a significant boost to West Sussex tourism and the local economy, with 15,000 entrants and their friends and families travelling to

and emergency service stakeholders to mitigate potential issues caused by road closures across the 100-mile route that are necessary to ensure the safety of cyclists.

Traffic enforcement notices which will be issued two weeks in advance and anyone affected is urged to find an alternative parking location for their vehicle. Several local access plans have been developed to assist local communities, which can be viewed within the road closure section of the event website.

Welcome to my new weekly column, which will entail everything, life, work, drama and my opinions THIS week I want to talk about spelling and grammar. Sat at my desk over the last few days, I’ve noticed posters advertising the Fun Fair on the Seafront, you cannot fail to notice the huge great spelling mistake.

Now, not a native to Bognor, I moved here 20 years ago from the Capital, the great smoke, London. When questioned on my move, I used to tell people I was moving to Bognor Regis, the sunniest place in the UK. Friends asking for my address would instinctively know how to spell Bognor, as I’d make sure that my

pronunciation of Bognor, emphasis on the Nor. Now, as I sit and stare at the poster, it is glaringly obvious to me that someone somewhere in their infinite wisdom had posters printed with a spelling mistake so enormous that no one has picked up on it. How can it go from being designed, to proof read and printing, without someone saying Bognor is misspelt. From holidaying here as a 2 year old to moving 20 years ago, I’ve always known that Bognor is spelt with a NOR not a NER. Which leads me to grammar in general, why

is it that the silliest of mistakes do not get picked up. For example, a lot of my business is booking staff through text or Whatsapp, it’s the modern world and I’ve moved with the times. However, what I have noticed is common mistakes ie: would’ve, should’ve, could’ve, instead of these abbreviations, I get Should OF, or Would OF or Could OF. Another example Your or You’re, I know it can be a bit confusing at times, but the easiest way to remember is YOU ARE You’re or Your, as in belonging to. I went to school with a very intelligent

girl who forever got confused with the spelling of Weather and whether.

I didn’t understand how she got confused but she did. Anyway, my point is we all need to be more observant with our grammar and spelling and certainly if you are going to display a poster around town. We need to get the fundamentals right.

Floral firsts for Bersted KEEN gardeners have been rewarded for brightening up Bersted.

The winners of this year's Bersted in Bloom competition have received their trophies and certificates.

Bersted Parish Council chairman, Cllr Brian Knight, handed them out at this month's meeting.

He thanked the winners for taking part and improving the area's appearance.

The competition's organiser, North Bersted resident Philippa Seagar, said: "The standard of the entries was really good. The weather was against everyone this year - everywhere we went the grass was brown - but the judges took that into account. Everyone was in the same situation with the lack of rain.

"We had some different entries to last year and it is always good to have new people taking part.

"It gives pleasure to people to see a nicely-kept front garden and people look forward to seeing them.

"We have got some good gardeners and we would like to encourage more people to enter.

"People think you have to be a professional gardener to take part. But there is no such thing. It's all about people enjoying seeing what you have done in your garden."

Three judges - Janet Hogben, Irene Wood and Pat Alderton - assessed the nine entries, the same number as last year, and chose the following winners: 1 Maurice McDougall, 2 Michelle Drablow, 3 Linda Bowen.

A THIEF believed to frequent various addresses in Bognor Regis is wanted on recall to prison.

James Hollingsworth, 35, pictured below, is described as fair haired, 5ft 7ins tall, and of medium build.

He had been sentenced to 22 months in prison following a conviction for theft in February this year.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "On June 28, he was released on licence from HM Prison, Lewes, but a month later the licence was revoked after he breached its conditions.

"He is now thought to be in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area."

Ishika is head girl with GCSE results

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW style of GCSE exams has not stopped pupils at a city school achieving fantastic results.

Students at Chichester High School were the first to sit the new type of qualifications which saw most sitting only exams with little coursework.

THis year, Ishika Dutta was crowned as the highest performing girl, receiving six 9 grades and four 8's.

Her maths score was the top in the year and her favourite subject. She now plans to stay at Chichester High School for sixth form and study maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at A-level.

Ishika said: "I am really happy with my maths result and really surprised I got a 9 in biology and 8 in chemistry.

"I did work hard to get these results and I think everyone is relieved now. It truly is an achievement we all did so well when these are the first exams."

Sumita, Ishika's mother said: "I'm feeling good. She worked extremely hard. I kept saying to her that it didn’t matter what she scored, she had put her best foot forward and that hard work has paid off."

Abi Tweed was another high achiever, receiving a grade 9 in geography, history, English language and citizenship - the last of which she sat on her 16th birthday.

She said: "I really enjoyed humanities

subjects and the citizenship class. We only had three lessons a fortnight in citizenship so I didn't know how I'd do but I really enjoyed it and was even voted the school's prime minister.

"I'm so happy with my results. I had put so much work in. I didn't want it to be a waste. I had to sit 27 exams for just ten subjects so it was worrying that I didn't have the option to do any coursework in any of my subjects."

Abi's mum, Ruth, said: "I am so relieved it's all over, it's been very stressful. Abi is my fourth child, she is my little baby.

It was a lot more stressful as a parent this year as these exams were all new and it was all down to them. I am really proud of her."

Twins Rhianna and THeo Batchelor were anxious about their results, but doubled up on the top results.

Rhianna scored a 9 in history and Latin and an 8 in French, geography and science, while twin brother THeo got a 7 in French, geography and history.

Mum Kirsty said: "I'm a twin too, so coming here to get the results brings back memories of myself and my sister.

"It was reasonably stressful but I am so happy, I just knew they would be OK. I had every faith in them even though they were the new GCSE's.

Julia Dylewska turns 17 next week and is already celebrating by achieving 8s in chemistry, geography and history.

Her mother, Evie, was crying with happiness and said: "Julia originally

comes from Poland so English is not her first language. I always knew she was clever but it has been hard as I have raised her as a single mum. I have never had to sit with her to practise school work or homework, though, it just comes naturally to her."

Executive principal Yasmin Maskatiya said: "We have had the privilege of teaching these young people over the past few years and are delighted that so many of them have done so well."

A boxing success for Holly

THat's what 16-year-old Holly Heffron did over the summer - and she still managed to get top grades.

Holly, who attended Bishop Luffa School in Chichester, got eight 9s and an 8, despite combining her revision with daily boxing training in Portsmouth.

She also travels around the country to train and, in October, she will travel to Russia for the European Championships. She hopes to one day compete professionally.

She said: "I did a boxing open day about four years ago and I fell in love with it and decided it was something that I wanted to take seriously.

"I was training every day and during my exams I took my flash cards (revision cards) with me in the car. I would come home from school, have an hour at home to revise and then be straight off to train.

"I'm over the moon. I wasn't expecting to do this well. I can't believe it."

THis year's results are the first of the new type of qualifications, with most subjects being graded 1-9 and focusing mainly on examinations instead of coursework.

Meanwhile, William Murphy, pictured far right, got 9s in all nine of his subjects. He is staying at Bishop Luffa to study his A-Levels.

He said: "I am ecstatic. It's a big shock. It was very difficult and very draining."

Jamie Hudson, pictured top left, got two 8s, six 9s and an A*. He will be staying at Bishop Luffa to attend the sixth form.

He said: "I don't know how to feel. I'm shocked. It's great - I feel on top of the world. I was getting ready for disappointment and was

preparing for the worst.

"I have got the teachers to credit for this.

THis is a great school. I am really looking forward to staying here for the sixth form."

Headteacher Nick Taunt, who retires at the end of the month, said: "THe results are very strong. It's been quite traumatic for this year group because they haven't been used to end of year terminal exams."

Meanwhile, at THe Academy Selsey, students also celebrated their results.

Sarah Knee got five 6s, three 5s and an A. She said: "I thought I was going to be sick this morning but I'm quite pleased as I did better than I expected to."

Tom Challen also did well. He said: "I am happy, especially because I got a 5 in English. I am going to study engineering in Portsmouth."

Headteacher Tom Garfield said: "We are very proud of how the students approached the new style GCSEs. THey were a very challenging set of examinations, especially the quality and depth that they had to go into.

THey have got what their efforts deserved."

` Legion pilgrimage REID Archibald, a porter at Nuffield Health Chichester, took part in the Royal British Legion Pilgrimage to commemorate 90 years since the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres and 100 years since the end of the war. THe Menin Gate bears the name of over 54,000 officers and men that have no known grave and were killed in Ypres Salient.

Mr Archibald said: “It was such a privilege for myself and my wife to be asked by the president of the Royal British Legion. It wasn’t until I was actually there that the rapture of the crowd brought it to life – feeling proud and emotional.

“Originally I am the standard bearer for our section, based in South Harting.

THey choose one from each branch throughout the country and because I said yes, they asked my wife to do the wreath laying.”

Mr Archibald has been a porter at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital for five and a half years.

Music and movement to help school pupils f Youth cabinet members with actress Evanna Lynch

Youth cabinet's political insight NEWLY-ELECTED members of the West Sussex youth cabinet have walked in the footsteps of the Queen.

They visited the monarch's robing room in Parliament, the throne and found out about her roles in the democratic process.

They found out about the roles played by each area within Parliament and the unique role the Commons and Lords play in hosting debates and passing new laws.

From there, they took a trip to 10 Downing Street to see where Prime Minister Theresa May lives - and happened to meet actress Evanna Lynch from the Harry Potter films.

A ÂŁ1,000 grant to Harmony Hive Community Interest Company will allow its founder, Inna Erskine, to provide three new reception classes at Edward Bryant School with one term's worth of music and movement classes. The Bumble Beats initiative will start next month and is intended to help the children adjust to life in their new surroundings.

Former Edward Bryant pupil Inna said: "I've voluntarily been offering a short session with one reception class

Inna has spent more than ÂŁ400 on a set of drums for the classes. She also uses hand bells, drums and 32nd size scale violin, which is specially designed for children aged between two and four. It is about the length of a size of A4 paper.

"All the children have the opportunity to play this tiny violin during each session," she added, "as I also believe children can't aspire to something that they don't believe is accessible."

Heidi is a class act in keeping you fit AS THE world has an increasing ageing population, more and more of us are wanting to keep healthier and fitter for as long as possible to allow us to live life to the full!

I always find September such a busy time for people wanting to make changes in their lives, try new things and generally get on a bit of a health kick. Its been a lovely long summer, and now it's time to get strong and fit for the autumn!

Unfortunately, sometimes, as the body and mind ages, we end up doing less and less because of injuries, aches and pains or other health complications and then we start to notice our strength, balance, coordination and movement isn't quite what it used to be.

My fabulous friend, Heidi Dunster, from Health Driven, was managing an exercise referral scheme for Chichester District Council for more than 10 years and wanted to reach more of the community with her knowledge and expertise so started up a business creating a whole timetable of safe and effective exercise classes for the over 60s called 'steady and strong', 'falls prevention' and 'paracise'. They include evidence-based exercises to help improve posture, strength and balance and make activities of daily living easier to achieve.

to strengthen those weaker muscles and it is recommended that over 65s should do muscle strengthening exercises at least twice weekly.

Balance: Balance is the one thing Heidi believes everyone can improve as we rely on our balance to stay upright when we over reach or trip up!

As we age, our balance reaction times get slower and so do our reflexes. With some simple exercises Heidi can teach you, such as heel raises, toe raises, sit to stand, heel to toe walking and one leg stand, you can start to improve your balance.

Muscle Strength: Between the ages of 50 and 70 ,we lose about 30 per cent of our muscle strength, which isn't good news if we are trying to regain our balance, get up off the floor or stop a fall.

Bones: Bones also naturally become more brittle as we age which makes a fracture more likely, so if we can prevent a fall by doing weight bearing activities and eating a balanced diet then we are well on the way to improving our health and wellbeing.

We lose about 30 per cent of our muscle strength between the ages of 50 and 70

Movement: 'Keep moving for a more balanced life' We've seen how ageing impairs strength and balance and this is made worse if we spend long periods of time sitting. The more active you can be, the more you can offset the effects of ageing!

With this in mind, Heidi has become one of the first paracise instructors in this area.

Paracise is a new innovative exercise class designed to enhance and enrich your life. It is a gentle but effective 45 minute standing workout that flows smoothly through movements created to improve mobility, flexibility, coordination and balance.

This is medication in motion to some great music everyone will recognise and love.

As for wine, my port of call this week is Aldi in Chichester and, in recognition of the temperatures cooling somewhat, I will concentrate on more red wines than white for the first time this hitherto heady summer.

I was initially intrigued by a Winking Owl Crisp White for a miserly outlay of just £3.49, a light wine of only 10.5 per cent alcohol volume which is pleasingly inoffensive and has a tropical fruit flavour and would be a good party wine.

My second white wine selection was that of a 2017 Gavi Del Commune Di

Gavi priced at £6.99 oozing ripe peach and fresh citrus flavours without the slightest hint of sharpness - a good price for a Gavi Di Gavi and one evoking Tuscan pastoral bliss!

In terms of red wines, I was delighted to procure a 2016 Wakefield 80 Acres Shiraz Viognier of South Australian provenance for just £5.69.

This wine, priding itself on being carbon neutral, takes its name from the fact that historically rural land in South Australia was sold to settlers in 80 acre blocks and the Wakefield 80 Acres was launched by the Taylor family in 2007.

Syrah and Viognier wines come from a most unlikely partnership of a red and white wine grape with this blend first appearing in the Northern Rhône region of France (Côte Rôtie par exemple) and subsequently spreading to the New World.

The wine has 92 per cent Syrah and just eight per cent Viognier lifting the perfume and enlivening the colour of the vin. This medium-bodied wine is juicy in texture with an intense aroma of lifted spice and dark blood plum flavours with hints of vanilla and cherries dipped in dark chocolate and would pair ideally

with pizza, a barbecued steak or even a curry - one definitely to snap up!

For just £5.79 expended, the 2016 South Australian Shiraz from Aldi’s Exquisite Collection (generally an indication of quality) is a blend of Shiraz with 12 per cent Cabernet and exudes super-ripe red and black fruits and has a rich, fullon style and is jammy in character with

a touch of sweet spice - well worth a try, à mon avis!

Another Exquisite Collection number, namely the 2016 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon priced at £5.99, from the valleys of Central Chile proved to be deep in colour and full of red fruit flavours with a hint of vanilla.

My final red selection was a 2017 Domaine Ferrandière Pays D’Oc Merlot also priced at £5.99 - a medium-bodied wine with abundant dark fruit flavours, good balance and relatively soft and supple and undoubtedly good value without being over complex.

Community News & Views FUTURE students at the Chichester College Group will be able to play their part in keeping the nation's trains running.

The group's Crawley College has been announced by the National Skills Academy Rail as an official member of its national network of colleges in a countrywide training partnership.

The recognition adds to the college's strong history of delivering apprenticeships.

The National Skills Academy Rail is a rail-industry membership body that represents the interests of the rail sector. It works with employers to ensure they have a skilled workforce to meet their needs. The national network enables employers to find high quality education providers.

Shelagh Legrave, the chief executive of the Chichester College Group, said: "We place employability at the heart of our learning and are proud to work closely with employers across our area, and beyond, to ensure that our curriculum supports our students and ensures they are gaining the skills and experience required in their chosen industry."

Membership of the national network means Crawley College will be able to work with other further education colleges who have experience of working collaboratively with employers, as well as a wide understanding of the UK rail industry and its needs.

Crawley College's principal, Vicki Illingworth, said: "This is the latest step for us as we work towards providing our local area with the skilled workforce of tomorrow.

"We are passionate about developing our curriculum, ensuring our learners are continuing to meet the skills and employment needs across the whole rail industry, from the technical engineering to business operations."

INNOVATIVE robots could soon be picking raspberries at farms around Chichester.

Soft fruit grower Hall Hunter Partnership - which has farms in Colworth, Runcton and in Vinnetrow Road - has agreed to field test high-tech harvesting robots.

The family-run business has signed an agreement with Fieldwork Robotics, which was founded by the University of Plymouth, and is led by robotics lecturer, Dr Martin Stoelen. It is currently creating machines capable of picking a range of fruit and vegetables.

The collaboration will enable the technology to be trialled in a range of settings, such as fields and polytunnels, under different climactic and light conditions. Field tests should start later this year. Once they are a success, the technology can be easily adapted for other fruit and vegetables.

Hall Hunter Partnership chief operating officer David Green said: "HHP has always led the soft fruit industry in pushing forward productivity and quality standards on our farms and nurseries.

"This partnership with Fieldwork Robotics is an exciting new development to pioneer the harvesting of raspberries robotically at a commercial scale. We are looking forward to our first human-free hectare to be picked together."

The partnership grows 14,000 tonnes of raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. Its major customers include Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Tesco.

CLA South East represents thousands of landowners, farmers and rural businesses in the region.

Its regional director, Robin Edwards, said: "Technology is more important than ever, especially as uncertainty remains over the European labour supply after Brexit.

"It is complex technology which needs to be able to spot a berry, assess if it's ripe, aim and pick it without damaging it."

VOLUNTEERS are needed to offer the best start in life for assistance dogs.

The Midhurst based charity, Canine Partners is looking for puppy parents in West Sussex to provide their puppies with the love, care and skills they need to get ready for the next stage of their training.

Rachel MacDonald, pictured above, a 45-year-old mum of two from Bognor Regis, is currently a puppy parent with her first puppy-in-training, black Labrador Morley.

“Being a volunteer for Canine Partners is something we talked about doing when life became less crazy and when our two sons were older but then three years ago life changed,” says Rachel.

“We sadly lost my lovely husband Paul and we all felt a bit lost. Before he passed away, Paul said to me he felt kids and dogs would work for me and he was so right, dogs are very healing.”

Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

Puppies-in-training live in the volunteer’s home from around eight-weeks-old until they are ready to start advanced training when they are between 12 and 14 months.

Canine Partners’ expert trainers are on hand to support puppy parents, as training involves home visits, one-to-ones, town visits and puppy classes in order to socialise the puppy and get them used to all situations they may need to be in as a fully trained canine partner.

To become a puppy parent in one of Canine Partners’ 13 puppy satellites across the country including West Sussex, you need to be aged 18 or over, not work full time and be willing to make a long term commitment.

“If you’re thinking about being a puppy parent I say go for it but keep in mind the great thing that is going to come out at the end of it,” says Rachel.

NEARLY 1,500 residents and businesses in rural areas of Sussex have said the fear of crime blights their lives.

The 1,451 responses to the 2018 national rural crime survey received from the Sussex Police area was well above the number from surrounding areas.

They painted a worrying picture of life in the countryside for the thousands of farmers, landowners and rural businesses who are members of the CLA South East region.

The survey found that rural communities were 'living on the edge - in fear of crime, unhappy with the police and feeling isolated and vulnerable'.

Half of the businesses surveyed said crime had a moderate or great impact on their lives. Six out of ten were fairly or very worried about becoming a victim of crime.

CLA South East regional director Robin Edwards said: "The results of the latest national crime survey are worrying but confirm the hard reality of how people who live and work in the countryside view rural crime. The findings chime with what we are regularly told by our members across the south east who speak of feeling isolated and that police responses to their calls and concerns are often not taken seriously enough.

"We meet regularly with police forces, and while understanding that police budgets are tight, we will continue to push for a level of investment and resource in rural policing that better reflects the seriousness of the criminal activity that takes place in the countryside."

Three years after the first survey, the 2018 results - from more than 20,000 people - show that the perception of policing in rural communities is poor and much worse than in urban areas.

Only 27 per cent of respondents say the police force in their area is doing a good job. That was 11 per cent lower than the answer to the same question in 2015.

The survey was commissioned by the National Rural Crime Network of 30 police and crime commissioners from across the country. The most common concern was flytipping, with 57 per cent of respondents seeing evidence of the crime, with speeding second at 32 per cent.

Ten recommendations have been produced by the network after the survey. These include the need for Chief Constables to change rural policing, putting more focus on farmers and making it easier to report crimes.

TWO NEW members of the West Sussex County Cabinet have been announced.

Cllr Roger Elkins, pictured above, takes on responsibility for highways and infrastructure.

He has many years of experience as a senior Conservative member of Arun District Council for Ferring and is a county councillor for East Preston and Ferring. He enjoyed a career in the construction industry before he retired.

"I'm delighted to be joining the cabinet and look forward to working with the highways team on issues that are important to people in West Sussex who use our roads," he said.

He replaces Cllr Bob Lanzer, who becomes the cabinet member for corporate relations. This role includes customer relations and data protection as well as many behind the scenes services which have an impact on the lives of residents.

Cllr Paul Marshall, who is the Conservative councillor for Storrington, will become the cabinet member for children and young people.

He has been a member of the county council's children and young people's services select committee and is a district councillor in Horsham.

He has had a career in retail where he has held a number of directorships.

The livestock markets of Chichester - part two

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at The Novium Museum IN last week’s article, we left Chichester’s livestock market in the interwar period.

Important auction sales continued to be held in Chichester until the Second World War. During the war, however, all fat stock (stock sold for slaughter) was purchased by the Ministry of Food.

THis system was introduced as part of food rationing. Chichester market continued to be an important centre for buying and selling store stock for fattening throughout the war period.

Chichester livestock market had always been held fortnightly but after 1950 it was held every Wednesday.

Improvements to the market were made during the 1950s when a new tiered auction ring for sales was constructed. THis enabled buyers to have a much better view of the animals.

On June 3 1960, a traders market opened

at the Cattle Market premises and ran in conjunction with the livestock market. 20 portable stalls were erected.

No more than three traders could sell goods of the same kind and the sale of fresh meat, fish and shellfish was not permitted.

Trading originally took place on Friday's and Saturday's, however later in the year it was agreed that Wednesday trading could also commence.

Unfortunately three days of trading did not prove as popular as was hoped and subsequently trading ceased on Fridays and Saturdays.

Farm animals remained a feature of the city streets on markets days into the early 1960s as animals were herded from the station or local farms to the Cattle Market.

As road transport replaced rail, however, this became a less frequent sight until eventually ceasing altogether by the late 1960s.

THroughout the 1950s and 1960s, Chichester had one of the biggest pig markets in the south of England with over 1,000 pigs per week being sold.

Virtually all pigs sent to Chichester market were from small producers on local mixed farms.

During the 1970s, however, the number of pigs kept in the district rapidly declined.

After the mid-1970s, the future of Chichester Livestock market became less certain.

Redevelopment of the site was discussed and relocation of the livestock market outside Chichester was considered but eventually ruled out.

In 1988, a Market Redevelopment SubCommittee was set up.

THey were tasked with preparing a brief for the redevelopment of the Cattle Market site.

In April of the following year the council decided that the size of the livestock market should be reduced, the remainder of the site should be cleared and resurfaced ready to be utilised for car parking.

Despite much campaigning by the

Chichester Society on March 6, 1990, the full council voted taking the decision to take the entire site back for the council's own use, namely car parking.

THe final livestock market in Chichester took place on October 24, 1990. THe site was turned into a car park with over 900 spaces, aptly named the Cattle Market.

In 1998 the first Farmers Market was held in the Cattle Market.

Since that time they have been held regularly every month, growing in size and frequency over time.

In June 2006, the Farmers' Market moved to North and East street, where it still takes place today every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month.

All stallholders are required to grow, rear, bake, and/or preserve all their produce and are based within 30 miles of Chichester.

Stallholders at Chichester's Farmers' Market this year were recognised for their high quality produce and hard work after the market won Sussex Farmers' Market of the Year at the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2018.

The Guide Dogs Assistant Poppy Appeal Organiser for Bognor Regis – Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal supports service personnel, veterans and their families. Volunteers are needed to assist with organising the Poppy Appeal in the Bognor Regis area by helping to plan the collection activity, preparation of the Poppy Appeal sales material, and placing and collecting the Poppy boxes from businesses and other sites in the Bognor Regis area.

Tasks will include: working as part of a team, meeting regularly to plan activities, and visiting local businesses/ shops/supermarkets to persuade them to hold a Poppy donation box. You will need to be physically able to lift and carry boxes of poppies and money boxes, able to drive and have access to a vehicle, and able to man collection points.

artists in the community to work with young people in schools and colleges. They support artists and schools to fund and manage arts and cultural enrichment programmes and also support artists to provide events for young people in the local community. for essential journeys to hospital, The Medical Centre, Dentists, Opticians and other medical needs. Where they have spare capacity, they will also take members to visit relatives in hospital. Volunteer drivers and escorts are always needed for this service.

Volunteer Befriender (Bognor Regis) – The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (CSRF) The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship aims to help retired civil servants through friendship and support to enjoy a better and more fulfilling retirement. They offer different services; befriending schemes, network of community groups, information and signposting. They are looking for volunteers to visit isolated older people for a social call - a chat over a cuppa. Visitors generously give up their time to help reduce loneliness in later life. CSRF offer training and reimburse travel costs. No qualifications are required, although they will ask for references and volunteers have to be over 18. They ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months visiting either weekly, fortnightly or monthly, by arrangement.

Middleton looking to bounce back PostSport after defeat to struggling Cuckfield MIDDLETON CC are out to end a four-game losing streak as their slide down the Sussex Premier Division continues.

Sean Heather's side now sit just one place above the relegation places after suffering an 82-run loss to fellow strugglers Cuckfield.

With a 65 point buffer between them and the bottom two and just a couple of games to play, Middleton are in no danger of going down. But Heather's side will want to prove to other sides in the division that they are no pushovers as the season draws to a close.

Next up is a trip to mid-table Horsham tomorrow (11.30am) with Middleton looking to perform much-better than their reverse to Cuckfield.

After losing the loss at Sea Lane, the home side struck quickly taking two wickets.

But they failed to capitalise and Cuckfield amassed a total of 208-8 off their 50 overs.

In reply, Josh Wood (20) and Matthew Reynolds (26) put on 43 for the opening wicket. But, once they fell, only Heather (42) showed some resistance as Middleton were dismissed for 126.

In Division Two, relegation is still a possibility for Bognor Regis after a narrow

defeat to third-placed St James's Montefiore.

Chasing 212 for victory, an inspired halfcentury from Jim Fallick (61 off 49) put Ryan Maskell's side within touching distance. But the tail were unable to get them across to line, and Bognor fell to a 19 run loss.

Next up is a trip to bottom side Lindfield tomorrow (12pm) while fellow Division Two side Chichester Priory Park head to Billingshurst.

Matthew Geffen's poor run continued last weekend when they slumped to a 41-run loss to leaders Three Bridges at Goodwood.

Charlie Futcher (25) top-scored for Chi as they fell short of the visitors' total of 171 and ensuring they have won just once in their past five matches.

In Division Three West, Pagham's rough patch continued as they were outplayed by bottom-side Three Bridges Seconds and condemned to a four-wicket loss.

Only four players reached double-figures for Stuart Hanks' side with Richard Bird (34*) and Nikki Tabberer (23) putting on 54 for the tenth wicket to take the total to 138.

Next up is a home match against fourthbottom Steyning (12pm).

DARTS: Friary Z's Richard Ragless was in inspired form as he averaged more than 25 points a throw to help his side to a comfortable 12-3 win over Lords Legends.

CHICHESTER Priory Park CC's Colts are having a season to remember with one age group already securing their place among the best in Sussex come the end of the year.

The club has a thriving youth set-up which is the envy of many teams across Sussex, boasting 14 teams for ages from under-8s through to under-18s, including three girls teams.

The buoyant nature is fully-evident on Friday evenings when more than 100 under 10 junior members attend coaching sessions run by the club's team of qualified coaches.

Those skills have been put on good display at all levels this season, especially during the dedicated Sussex Junior Cricket Festival weeks, which allow youngsters opportunities to play the longer form of the game.

In the league season, the under-10s and the under-12s have completed their campaign in excellent form and both have topped their sections.

The under-12s ‘Spitfires’ have lost just once

all season, notching five wins from six league games.

Meanwhile the under-10s have been excellent throughout, winning nine out of their 10 league games.

The successful season has been recognised at a county level.

After winning an area tournament at Arundel, the young side have been invited to play at Sussex CCC's County Ground headquarters in Hove in the County Finals in September.

Pagham will also be among the sides to play at the event.

Elsewhere the under-11s, 13s and 14s showed the strength in the Priory Park youth set-up by performing well in their respective leagues with no team finishing lower than third.

Sussex Junior Cricket Festival 2018 is now in full swing with the under-12s, under-13s and under-14s all performing well as they have already completed their matches.

ATHLETICS: Chichester's teen sprint sensation Fleur Hollyer performed admirably as she took part in national competition for the first time.

The 14-year-old was Chichester Runners & Athletic Club`s sole representative at the South of England Athletics Championships held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in North London earlier this month.

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the under-15 competitor in extremely difficult windy conditions which rendered finishing times meaningless.

In the 200m she ran what was technically her best-ever performance over the distance to qualify for the semifinal.

Although she was again technically sound in the semi-final, an indifferent start out of the blocks cost her a place in the final.

Similar conditions hampered her in the 100m, but overall Fleur demonstrated just how far her technical sprinting ability has progressed.

Fleur will look to round off the season on a high as part of the Chi track and field team which is competing in the Southern Athletics League

Smith warns squad depth will be vital as Ladies win opener

Nationals sail into Bognor CREWS from across the country sailed into Bognor Regis for a national competition.

The Shearwater Nationals brought together more than a dozen boats from around the UK for a weekend of hotlyanticipated racing at Bognor Sailing Club in Victoria Road.

The Weston-based Crowns boat under the helm of Nigel Stuart was a class apart for most of the weekend and were leading the pack from the start.

Away from the racing, a huge amount of help was required as officials, catering and clearing teams all played their part in the organisation of the prestigious event.

Speaking after the weekend, organiser Rachel Atfield said: "Wow, what a fantastically successful five days for the Shearwater Nationals.

"I think it's safe to say that our visitors and members thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely made the most of the event. I would like to thank everyone involved in making it happen."

It marks a successful year for the club which is a friendly venue for sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and other watersports.

Next up for it is to continue fundraising efforts to update the 'outdated' changing rooms and toilets.

The aim is to make the club more accessible to children and those with disabilities.

A Just Giving page set up last month has already received pledges of more than £1,400 of the £5,000 target.

The club said: "Although as a club we offer disabled access, this does not extend to our toilets. The corridor and toilets are not wide enough to allow a wheelchair in.

"As well as this, the changing room layout is not practical for children to get changed/ showered at the same time as adults. Another thing we need is a suitable baby change area.

"We are a non profit making organisation and our income covers our outgoings with very little left over.

"For us to raise the amount of money needed for the vital update would take us a very long time and we need them updated as soon as possible.

"We will be raising some money ourselves but are hoping that people will help us and add to our funds."

CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Aaron Smith believes there's more to come from his side despite making a winning start to the National South campaign.

Goals from debutants Sara Tubby and Molly Clark gave the Green and White Army three points against an Oxford United side that had been competing in the second tier last year.

It could have been more for City who, lining up in an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation, had a series of chances to increase their lead.

Next up for Chi is a long trip to the west country to play old foes Plymouth Argyle on Sunday (2pm).

Despite Smith playing five debutants in the opener, he has warned that he will not be afraid of wringing the changes as the season progress.

The manager said: "We looked at how we wanted to play today and picked the team we thought was best equipped to play Oxford. We will do the same against Plymouth.

"We could have picked any 11 and they would have done a job, that's how good our squad is. Not everyone will get on the pitch but we're a squad of 18 players and any of them could have a match at some point."

Unbeaten Chi continue to fly

CHICHESTER City continue to soar in the SCFL Premier after keeping their unbeaten start to the season rolling on.

Miles Rutherford's side picked up four points from six in the past week to ensure they remain joint-top of the table at this early stage of the campaign.

A 2-1 victory over likely challengers Horsham YMCA on Saturday was followed by a goalless draw against Broadbridge Heath under the lights on Tuesday.

Next up for Chi is a quick return match against the Bears tomorrow as they head

to the outskirts of Horsham for the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup (3pm).

Then it's a return to the league with an away match against East Preston on Tuesday(7.45pm).

Chi will be looking to build on their excellent early season form which was showcased in full against YM last weekend.

Two Scott Jones goals, the winner coming five minutes from time, were the difference for Rutherford's side as City laid down a marker against a side who is likely to be there or thereabouts this season.

The only disappointment was that Chi could not find a winner against Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday.

Writing after the match, the club posted on Twitter: "It wasn’t the result we were looking for last night, though we remain positive.

"Keeping a clean sheet was important to us. We now turn our attention to the Peter Bentley Cup." Chi are joined at the top of the SCFL Premier table by Pagham, who have also scooped ten points from 12 in their opening four matches.

The Lions were far from their best last weekend when their ten-men scored late to grab a 1-1 draw away at Crawley Down Gatwick, Lindon Miller scoring for them.

Pagham returned to their best on Tuesday, though, dispatching Loxwood 7-1 as Callum Overton (4), George Gaskin (2) and Miller cashed in.

The Lions head to fellow SCFL Premier outfit Newhaven tomorrow in the qualifying round of the FA Cup (3pm) before a home league match against struggling Arundel on Monday (11am).

In SCFL Division Two, new Bosham manager Dennis Hughes is hoping to record his first win in charge of the Robins as they head to Jarvis Brook tomorrow (3pm) before a trip to Angmering Seniors on Monday (11am).

Bosham lost their opening match of the campaign 2-1 away at Roffey last weekend, Luke Gregory grabbing the consolation.

Bailey nets first win as Sidlesham boss SIDLESHAM boss Steve Bailey will be looking to kick on after securing his first win at the helm of the SCFL Division One club.

The former Selsey boss took charge at the Recreation Ground this summer and has been tasked with keeping them in step six after returning to the level for the first time in three years.

Bailey has been busy rebuilding the squad, bringing a number of players from the Blues into the Sids set-up.

After suffering defeat in his first two competitive matches, the duck was broken last weekend when goals from Ryan Chittock and Morgan Forry secured a 2-1 victory over Billingshurst.

After winning through, Sids will now be

looking to capitalise on that victory and push on to secure more points.

But they will have a tough couple of days with two matches against sides who were in the SCFL Premier last term.

First is a home game against Littlehampton Town tomorrow (3pm) before bank holiday Monday throws up a trip to Worthing United (11am).

Meanwhile fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey will hope to capitalise on a first win of the season as they travel to Steyning Town tomorrow (3pm) before heading to Littlehampton on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Daren Pearce's side beat Wick 3-1 in midweek thanks to goals from Callum Dowdell and Ryan Morey (2).

Bognor eye up a bank holiday haul to keep good start going Next Game

AFC HORNCHURCH (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is aiming to pick up points on the road as the Rocks face an early season double header.

After picking up seven points from the first nine, the Nyewood Lane side sit second in the Bostik Premier Division.

Bognor's potential promotion credentials will be put to the test this Bank Holiday, though, as the Rocks head to AFC Hornchurch tomorrow (3pm) before the first Sussex derby of the season at Lewes on Monday (3pm).

Even at this early stage of the season, Pearce has set his side a target of picking up at least two points from the two matches which will keep them in touch at the top of the table.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "I have always said if you can come away from away games with a point then you have done well.

"This week we've two on the bounce which means if we win one then we'll be ahead of that with three points rather than two.

"I'd be disappointed if we don’t pick up two points minimum in the next few days.

"I always think that if you go anywhere and you can pick up some points then that's a good result."

Rocks head out on the road for their double header off the back of a 3-0 home win against Bishop's Stortford last weekend.

A crowd of nearly 500 watched the match at the Nye Camp. It was the visitors who started the stronger as their set piece prowess sparked

some confusion in the home side's area.

But, long throws and the occasional defensive slip aside, Bishop's threat was limited and Bognor always looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

They had to wait until 20 minutes to go to do it when Brad Lethbridge swept home after good work down the right by Jimmy Muitt.

Fellow Portsmouth loanee Dan Smith then bagged a brace in quick time to round off the comfortable win.

The three points extends the Rocks unbeaten start and lifts them up to second, two points behind local rivals Worthing in the table.

Pearce said: "It's been a steady start. We haven’t pulled any trees up but I think we have done OK. Most of the matches have been quite even but during the vital moments in games we have either taken our chances or got the run of the green.

"That is good to give them confidence, especially considering we have such a young side. We will keep on encouraging them and hopefully we can keep on performing well."

Last week Rocks added young winger Mason Walsh to their ranks - but new additions have not been ruled out.

Pearce said: "We have not finished. Perhaps we are not looking so hard as we once were but we are still looking for anyone out there who can improve us. If they have the quality to improve us, then we'll consider them."

Flexible approach paying off FLEXIBILITY appears the name of the game when it comes to the Rocks squad this season.

While the season is only a few games old, Jack Pearce and Robbie Blake look to have built a team which is adaptable to take on everything that is thrown at them.

Last weekend's match against Bishop's Stortford saw a number of players slot into unfamiliar positions as the match wore on.

Among them was Calvin Davies, who started at right back before slotting into central midfield as the game progressed.

Pearce said: "Tommy (Block) was ill so Calvin was the natural person to go in there.

He started his career there so it was an obvious fit. He has high energy, is good on the ball and he’s done a good job."

Last weekend also saw a debut off the bench for 22-year-old winger Mason Walsh.

The attacker, who is the son of former England, Liverpool and Portsmouth ace Paul Walsh, joined the club after a stint in the National Premier Soccer League in the USA for New Orleans Jesters.

Pearce said: "Mason could prove to be a valuable addition to our squad and we look forward to working with him as we set about our quest to bid for promotion."

SO FAR, so good!

Rocks have got off to a great start in this Bostik Premier League season.

Two home wins and a draw away means we sit in second place in the table with seven points.

Dan Smith and Bradley Lethbridge have already proven their quality with some great goals.

The rest of the team seem to be upping their game also in these opening matches – I just hope we can continue to get results at home and maybe pick up the odd point away from now on.

Obviously, over the course of the season we might get hit with injuries or suspensions, which will provide the real test to this young team.

The Haringey Borough away game was our first of the season and it would provide a tough return match in this league.

Chinedu McKenzie, who had a spell with the Rocks last season, proved a handful - as did Femi Akinwande, Joel Nouble on the left and David Olufemi on the right flank.

But you have to give it to their goalkeeper, Valery Pajetat, who up until the second half had kept Bognor’s corners out (and there were many).

Dan Lincoln also pulled out a great stop to deny Akinwande in the second half.

It was hard to keep up with Lee Roberts and I did our best to call the action on the Rocks Radio.

A great goal by Jimmy Muitt and an Olufemi own goal were enough to give us a share of the points.

Haringey looked a decent attacking side and with a solid goalkeeper in Pajetat they will look to do well this year having come up from the Isthmian North Division last year.

I was really looking forward to the Merstham game in our first home fixture of the season soon after.

We were up against it in the

first 20 or so minutes.

They were hitting us with pace and they finally got the goal they wanted on 12 minutes.

This came before Lethbridge netted his first goal of the league season, beating the goalkeeper with a neat low strike.

Chad Field bundled home the second to take us into the lead on 30 minutes followed by Smith’s sublime chipped goal on 36 minutes.

The second half couldn’t live up to the action provided in the first but we won and it meant we moved up to sixth position.

I wasn’t at the Bishops Stortford game but thanks to the wonder of video footage I was able to enjoy all of Bognor’s three goals on the YouTube Channel Rocks TV. A simple tap in by Lethbridge opened the scores after a rather drab first half and then Smith netted a fine strike following a Cruyff turn and hitting it with his left foot inside the top left corner.

He netted his second from the penalty spot to notch Bognor’s second win of the season and moving them up to second place, only behind our rivals, the Mackerels of Worthing.

I was at my Nan’s 80th birthday party that day which was held at the Arun View Pub in Littlehampton – a great night for her with all of her family in attendance.

But despite the family occasion, I still found time to listen to Lee Roberts and Simon from Radio Respect on the Rocks Radio commentary and was delighted to hear that we won going into that evening!

I will be on the coach to AFC Hornchurch tomorrow so I hope as many Rocks fans can make it as well.

Rocks are on a roll. Let’s hope we can keep rocking!
