One week to go for footbridge BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WORK ON the Stockbridge footpath is due to be completed within a week or two, following months of delays. Work on the replacement bridge began in January, with an original finish date of April but ‘unacceptable movement’ during testing in May led to engineers

being called back to try to solve the problem. THe current works will not be carried out over this bank holiday weekend to ease traffic congestion in the area. A Highways England spokesperson said: “We look forward to opening the new Stockbridge footbridge soon and we are sorry for the delay. During our routine testing we identified an issue that could cause the walkway to move unacceptably

in certain conditions. "We have been looking at engineering solutions that reduce this movement to allow safe and comfortable use of the walkway over the bridge. We still expect to open the new footbridge as soon as this work is complete.” A letter was sent to residents in the area at the beginning of last week to explain what was happening. It said: "I am writing to advise that

A-one+, on behalf of Highways England will be carrying out works to mitigate the oscillation to the footway following the replacement and refurbishment of the Stockbridge Footbridge on the A27 Chichester, West Sussex earlier this year. "THe works will consist of the installation of column stiffeners, footpath works and painting to allow the reopening of the footbridge." See page three
