Parking charges on the rise

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PARKING charges in the city centre are set to rise by around seven per cent next month.

THe increase will affect pay and display on-street charges throughout the city as well as resident and visitor permits.

West Sussex County Council have

confirmed the charges will come into effect from Monday, September 3.

Baffins Lane, Chapel Street, East Street, Guildhall Street, North Street, North Walls, Priory Road and Tower Street are just a few of the roads which will see charges change from £1.40 per hour to £1.50.

Shoppers will also be unable to pay for just 15 minutes, and instead will have to double the price from 35p to 75p for half

an hour instead.

Residents will also see a rise in permits of around five per cent with charges changing from £41 to £43 in zones F, G, H, J, K, L, M and O. A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “THe general objectives of a review of on-street parking charges are to: increase parking charges to cover inflation and increases in operational costs; manage parking

demand, thereby freeing-up on-street parking spaces for those who have the greatest need; encourage short stay, on-street parking, thereby maximising the available parking capacity, reducing the amount of circulating traffic and increasing accessibility; and to discourage unnecessary use of private cars in town centres and to encourage more sustainable transport choices."

Councillors refuse city gym relocation

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANNING permission has been refused for Grit Gym owners on a new site in Terminus Road after councillors were split.

Jason Mines, owner of the gym in Station Approach said he needed to find new premises or he would be forced to close.

THe lease on his current gym is up for renewal but he claims financially he is unable to renew this as the building is too small. Councillors debated the matter and were unable to reach a decision so the chairman, cllr Bob Hayes had the deciding vote to refuse permission.

After searching for almost four years, Mr Mines found the site in Willow Park and applied for planning permission for the change of use of the existing building from B1 to a gym (D2 use).

He said: "THis is my very last chance to save my very successful Chichester business.

"It will be heartbreaking for me and my family and devastating for my members."

Councillors were advised to refuse the planning because the proposed development would result in the unacceptable loss of employment land which has not been justified through a marketing and viability assessment.

THe district council owns the site and in May 2016 asked Flude Commercial to market the property but there wasn't a public marketing campaign until October 2017, which showed little interest.

THe application site is located to the north side of Terminus Road and currently used by West Sussex County Council for library services and archiving.

THe current gym employs nine people and the change of use would have generated approximately 23 jobs. Membership could be increased by an additional 450-500 people.

Chichester District Council's economic development officer supported the application, stating there has been little interest from any potential occupiers, other than the applicant. THe officer also said it is also important to consider that the desirability of this building for B use classes will be low.

Officers explained that according to policy, the statuory amount of time to market the building was two years.

Cllr Tricia Tull said: “Policies are not flexible, they are fixed. If we do not maintain these policies we will be in great difficulty with other applications which will be less desirable than this one.”

Cllr Gordon McAra said: “Not that long ago, we gave planning consent for a church in an industrial unit along the road, recommended by the officers.

"THe number of people employed in this building isn’t that great. I am going to support this, not because of the emotion behind it but purely in employment terms it actually fills its need.”

Speaking to the Chichester Post last week, Mr Mines said: “We are just not a normal gym. We help all sorts of people including troubled teenagers at school. We catch them early and help them. I get my enjoyment that way. We have classes for all including the handicapped and old.

“Since the day I opened Grit Gym, we have needed to expand. It is so difficult to get any building in Chichester. I have had to turn people away because we have space issues.”

BRENT Lodge Wildlife Hospital is opening its doors once again for another spectacular open weekend.

THe event in Sidlesham which runs from Saturday 25 to Sunday 26 August between 10am and 4pm promises to be a great day for all the family and a chance to help a worthy cause.

THere will be plenty of stalls such as furniture, bird feeders, gifts and local craft stalls. A tombola stall and a prize raffle with winners drawn on Sunday will also be avilable for those feeling lucky.

our new developments happening at the hospital with our new bird of prey enclosures. A CCTV and education viewing room has been installed especially so that visitors can view a video link into the hospital and the outside enclosures. You can see what's going on without disturbing the wildlife inside. Ppreviously the playful fox cubs proved to be very popular.

"THe hospital also has new outside enclosures that are currently housing young tawny owls. Also, with a busy season of seagulls, there will be plenty of wildlife activity going on."

FOLLOWING a hugely successful Qatar Goodwood Festival, Goodwood Racecourse is preparing for its most fun-packed fixture yet; the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

THe fixture on Friday, August 24 until Sunday, August 26 will feature top quality horse racing, Friday fireworks and a host of nostalgic activities for the whole family.

History could be created, as the everpopular Frankie Dettori is just one victory away from riding his 200th winner at Goodwood.

Should the Italian reach the milestone, he would become only the second jockey to have done so since Goodwood first staged racing in 1802.

Six enthralling races start the fixture, accompanied by live music from a saxophone quartet, a string quartet and a Rock ‘n’ Roll band, as well as plentiful activities for children such as a traditional fairground and coconut shy. As the racing concludes and the sun goes down, fire performers and stilt walkers will make their way around the grandstands, as a band of Batala drummers set a hypnotic beat.

Friday night finishes with a crescendo, as a dramatic firework display set to music – produced by the Starlight display team of

international renown – will take guests’ breath away once again.

THroughout Saturday and Sunday, donkey rides and various traditional attractions such as a helter skelter, carousel and big wheel, will keep the children entertained.

THe little ones will also no doubt be keen to visit the Lennox Activity Tent, with circus tutors teaching tricks and skills, regular Punch and Judy shows and face painting.

THe popular Goodwood Actors Guild will return, playing games of ‘invisible cricket’ and entertaining guests with a pantomime horse.

“As a result of our review of on-street parking charges across West Sussex, some are unchanged while others have been increased to reflect the equivalent off-street charge, as well as to manage town centre parking demand.

“THe increased charges will correct any imbalance between on and offstreet charges in some towns, take account of inflation and help fund future improvements in parking provision and improvements to the administration of the residents’ parking schemes.”

THe last time the majority of permits ad pay and displays were increased was in 2013.

Since that time, however, residents’ permits have been included within the fees and charges report and so have been increased by inflation.

Cllr Peter Evans from Chichester City Council said: "THe retail sector is struggling to survive in this modern age, Councils should be supporting local businesses by improving accessibility to their outlets.

"Constantly increasing parking charges will have a negative affect on accessibility to local city shops and businesses.THere is a danger that the combined efforts of our councils could end up driving visitors away from the city."

Cllr Richard Plowman for Chichester City Council agreed. He said: " Again it shows how just out of touch West

Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council are with the reality of what is happening to city centres and the need to ensure their vitality for the future.

"Let’s not kid ourselves, Chichester's economy is just as vulnerable.

Elsewhere in the UK many authorities are starting to reduce city car parking charges to attract people back into city centres from out of town shopping with free parking or online purchases usually with free delivery. Loss of the 15 min charge makes it now more expensive to just pop into the shops for that forgotten item."

A spokesperson for Chichester BID (Business Improvement District) said: “In general price rises have a negative effect on both consumer and retailer confidence whatever the cost, whatever the product. Parking in Chichester city centre is seen by some BID members to be prohibitive to custom, and in support of our membership the BID have been actively working with the local parking authorities to find creative ways of mitigating the impact of these kinds of increases.

"Currently we have a couple of schemes running with West Sussex County Council that offer reducedcost summer parking to customers in support of our members businesses. In addition there are plans in place for the middle of December to help Christmas shoppers find a cheaper alternative parking”.

` Man arrested POLICE in West Sussex arrested a Hampshire man following reports that he had been stalking a woman.

Dareen Harbut, 31, was arrested in Chichester on the early afternoon of Tuesday, August 14. He was also questioned about damage to the woman's Chichester flat.

` Missing Wayne POLICE are still concerned for missing man Wayne Mohrhardt from Chichester.

Wayne, 44, was last seen at his Chichester home on June 21, but was later spotted in London on June 27.

He is white, 5’ 11, with dark brown hair, facial hair and a dragon tattoo on his right arm. Wayne was last seen wearing black tracksuit bottoms, a dark coloured shirt and carrying a padded jacket.

Wayne requires regular medication and it is not believed he has taken any money with him.

Puppeteer to open Selsey man sheds

Tim Rose, who played Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars, has agreed to officially open the business.

Tim's fame also includes work on THe Labyrinth with David Bowie, THe Muppets, Dr. Who and the Teletubbies.

Mr Rose was born in Illinois and discovered puppetry while he was attending university in New York studying acting and directing.

When he first started work at Jim Henson's he had to take a pay cut. He had been earning more money from people throwing money into his hat, but he wanted to learn how you become a millionaire doing puppets.

Selsey Shedder, Paul Hobson said: "We are preparing our new shed where we intend to develop a group meeting place where men can feel at home and pursue practical interests and hobbies, or just come for a chat and mug of tea.

"THe Men's Shed will offer a space where men can use tools and resources they need, learn from each other and share experiences.

"THey can also work on community projects, and those of their own choosing, at their own pace at a safe, friendly and inclusive venue.

"We hope that men who may feel isolated and are often forgotten in

society, can just come along and join in.

"Initially we will be looking to cater for woodwork and some computing, possibly wood turning and wood carving. As the membership grows and other people put forward interest such as engineering, shabby chicing furniture or furniture restoration. We hope to become more diverse with our activities.

"THis has been in the pipeline for three years and has finally come to fruition only with the help of Selsey Town Council. THe council not only sorted out a premises for us but gave us an initial grant to get us going."

THe grand opening will be held on Tuesday, August 28 at the shed which is behind the cricket pavilion on the recreation ground in Selsey at 12pm.

Bulldog in search of new home AN AMERICAN Bulldog cross is desperately looking for a new home.

One year old pup Okie has been at Mount Noddy for a while after he was residing at the pound.

Although the staff don't know much about Okie's history they describe him as a very bouncy and cuddly young dog who requires a bit of training but he really isn't enjoying being in kennels.

Okie is quite nervous around other dogs and is not sure what to do so he will need lots of dog socialisation work to make him more confident and friendly around other dogs.

Top salon celebrate staff's hard work with awards day

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TEAM bonding has always been a priority at Q Hair and Beauty, Chichester’s leading salon, but at the end of July they celebrated in style with a spectacular daylong event designed to pay tribute to all the hard work and achievements of Team Q. Dawn Lawrence, managing director of the multi-award-winning salon on North Street, has always attributed the remarkable ongoing success of the business to the strength and talents of its team, both in the long-established salon on North Street and the new sister branch which opened in Midhurst earlier last year.

THe entire team from both salons were brought together at the Park Hotel, Chichester for QFest, an action-packed, fun event which began with breakfast and continued throughout the day and on into dancing at night.

After tucking into a hearty breakfast, there was an informal break-out session followed by razor cutting training for the stylists by Pep Pasqualino from Paul Mitchell, a reservations brain-storm, a talk on the best use of social media, and ‘Making Figures Work For You’, an insight on how to utilise salon performance tools.

“We all had such a fabulous day and it was a great way of pulling the team

together,” said Dawn.

“As well as rewarding everyone on Team Q, it reinforced our commitment to our brand, our love for Paul Mitchell and Moroccan oil and more importantly, each other and our vision for the future.”

THere was recognition for all and leading the way in the seven members selected for the Hall of Fame was Becki Botterill who joined Q in 1987 and has given the business 31 years of fantastic service.

Equally impressive were those named in the Roll of Recognition - Beth Middlecoate for her continued support in the development of the new Midhurst salon, Bella THwaites for the training and development of future professionals, and Chloe Hitchman for development of the beauty therapist team.

` Police reports REPORTS of vehicle break ins this week were up three on last week to 19. THese occurred in locations, including; Stansted Park car park, Cobnor Point, Chidham and Brandy Hole lane, Chichester.

On Tuesday, August 7, an engine and fuel tank were stolen from a boat at Birdham Pool in Birdham. THere were witnesses to the incident and no CCTV footage of the offenders.

In St James Road, Chichester on Monday, July 30 a property was broken into overnight. A handbag and other small items were taken.

In Laburnum Grove, Chichester on Tuesday, July 31, a property was entered while the occupants were away on holiday. Only jewellery was stolen. Serial 783 31/07.

On Friday, August 3, several garages were broken into overnight at Malcolm Road, Tangmere. Items were stolen including alloy wheels, fishing equipment and tools. Serial 422 03/08.

On Saturday, August 4, a property was broken into by smashing the window to the downstairs toilet in Kingsham Road, Chichester. An untidy search was conducted and items including a PlayStation were stolen. Serial 973 04/07.

On Wednesday, August 1 in Bishop Luffa Close, Chichester, a rock was thrown through a window of a property and broke the glass, there were no witnesses to this incident.

BBC stargazing show chooses city's harbour as the perfect site location CHICHESTER Harbour has once again provided the backdrop for an episode of the BBC's star gazing programme ‘THe Sky at Night'. Filming took place at Eames Farm on THorney Island, one of the Harbour's new Dark Sky Discovery Sites.

THe Sky at Night team was led by local expert astronomer Pete Lawrence who has been working with THe Sky at Night for the past 14 years. THe crew filmed for around three hours capturing footage both on the ground and by drone. THe main focus was on the sun and included advice on preparing different kinds of solar filters for use with telescopes.

Partnership of ten years

Europe’s largest berry producer, Colworth Farm is headed up by Harry Hall, of Hall Hunter Partnership. With the height of berry season upon us, Hall Hunter Partnership employs 2,000 people across its six farms in the UK and one in Portugal.

THis summer M&S is championing British berries, from cherries to strawberries, raspberries to blueberries.

With long standing relationships with many fruit growers, M&S has been working with Colworth Farm in Chichester for 10 years.

Colworth Farm is the largest of the grower’s farms, covering 392 acres of Chichester countryside. Four types of berries are produced; strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries.

Colworth Farm is one of very few farms to grow a unique variety of British

raspberry - Sapphire. Taking over 12 years to develop, the Sapphire raspberry is double the size of the traditional fruit with a sweeter flavour.

A typical day for Harry and his team begins at 5am.

He said: “We are up early to start picking berries at the coolest time of day, before the berries get too hot. Our fruit pickers rest from 11am until 4pm, and begin the evening harvest at 5pm.”

Over 7,000 tonnes of strawberries, 3,700 tonnes of raspberries, 2,000 tonnes of blueberries and almost 300 tonnes of blackberries are distributed by Hall Hunter Partnership each berry season.

THat’s the equivalent weight of 64 blue whales, the heaviest mammal in the world.

VILLAGERS being priced out of the housing market in North Mundham, West Sussex, have reason to now celebrate with the opening of Stoney Meadow, a development of 25 affordable Stonewater homes.

Social housing provider Stonewater has created the scheme which offers a mix of low-cost rental and shared ownership homes to meet a chronic shortage of affordable housing in the village for local people.

THe sensitively-designed rural housing development has been financed by Stonewater with an additional £595,770 grant and recycled grant funding from Homes England.

Currently, only eight per cent of rural housing across the country is affordable compared with 20 per cent in main urban centres.

Stonewater has worked closely with Chichester District Council and local developers Hamlet Homes to deliver the new housing community which offers a mix of four one-bedroom apartments, three one and two-bedroom bungalows and three two-bedroom houses – all for affordable rent. ` Tenpin bowling TENPIN, the entertainment complex based at Chichester Gate Leisure Park, has officially opened its doors to the public after a half a million-pound refurbishment and change of ownership.

THe site, previously known as Lakeside Superbowl, now sits in the portfolio of the Ten Entertainment Group - the second largest ten-pin bowling operator in the UK. THe vast cash injection saw the complex completely overhauled in only six weeks. THe renovations included new flooring, bar area, 16 state of the art lanes, kitchen and restaurant among others. THere are also new additions to the centre including amusement machines and American pool tables.

THe acquisition of the Chichester alley brings the Tenpin brand to a total of 44 sites trading across the UK, which collectively employ around 1,100 people.

On their opening night, Tenpin held a charity evening to celebrate the launch and help give back to the community.

Danny Bean, General Manager at Tenpin Chichester, said: “We are very proud to have been able to open a very fresh and modern site here in Chichester.

"Before Tenpin took over it was a very run down and long overdue a complete refit. Fortunately, we were in a very strong position to be able to give this multiplex the love it required with a major cash injection. “THe feedback we have received from local residents and the wider community has been outstanding."

Wonderland comes to city

Sussex based theatre company, THis Is My THeatre turned the Guildhall into Wonderland where visitors joined Alice on her journey last Wednesday.

Lewis Carroll's novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is as popular with children and adults alike now as it was in 1865 when it was first published.

Around 100 tickets were sold to the one-off show at Priory Park where just three actors brought the story to life.

Ethan Taylor, Hazel O'Neill and Matt Tweddle dominated the space with fabulous singing and creative acting for an hour with characters including Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, Mock Turtle, Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat. Hazel, who played Alice said: "Last year we did this performance in Brighton, so that was like a practice run.

We rehearsed for today for about a week and a half.

"It's a crazy show with a lot of adrenaline. We feed off the audience and interact with them. We are so lucky that we can share everything with them.

"Guildhall is such a lovely venue, we were all gobsmacked when we first walked in, it's beautiful. It's just perfect."

Props and costumes helped the three talented actors bring to life the elaborate tale, with clever narration and Alice's thinking aloud filling in costume change spaces.

Amy Garfield from Chichester took her

children, Faye aged five and six-year-old Olivia along.

She said: "It's a really good show. I was not sure what to expect but it was really impressive, especially with three people as the characters. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere too. It's Faye's birthday today and she really liked the rabbit as she thought he was funny."

Friends Gill Walsh, Louise Ansell and Pam Hall all came from Selsey to see the show after Gill saw it on Facebook.

She said: "It was absolutely brilliant.

THey must be exhausted. THey were all so talented. We felt that the adults could appreciate it a bit more too with some of the jokes."

Turning up the heat at West Dean on a wild, wet and windy weekend

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A WET and windy weekend didn't stop the heat rising at West Dean Gardens.

THe annual Chilli Fiesta kicked off on Friday with torrential downpours and wild winds but visitors still flocked to the event to try all things chilli related.

Stalls were set up with various traders from across the country selling homemade and fresh produce from oils, chutneys, sauces and spices.

Visitors were able to browse the stalls and sample products before buying, allowing everyone a chance to get some heat.

It wasn't just about the heat, with products including cheeses, sauces, cakes and snacks available for those who aren't as keen on spice.

For those not adverse to the change in weather, entertainment was on offer throughout the weekend with a stage area with live Latin music and an outdoor cinema.

THere were also tents with cookery demonstrations with top chefs including executive chef at Lavant's Earl of March, Giles THompson, Rick Stein's son, Jack, Masterchef 2018's Sweta Choudhury and Anthony O'Shaughnessy.

Gardening theatre talks and demonstrations were available to show

people various tips such as exploring herbs to make incredible cocktails, how to care for your chilli plant, understanding various chilli varieties, and ideas for growing unfamiliar edibles.

Street theatre performances, juggling and circus skills and belly dancing also provided entertainment for all ages.

Nicky Court from Portsmouth travelled to the event with her friend Sarah Nott.

She said: "We came last year when the weather was slightly better but still enjoyed it today. It's great because it's not just about chillies, there is so much variety here.

"We have bought some curry sauces, some chilli oils, cheese and pork scratchings. It hasn't been a complete wash-out."

Visitors could also explore the gardens of West Dean and see the chillies growing in the glasshouses. THere were opportunities for tours of the gardens and people could head to the shop to purchase chilli plants too.

In the walled gardens there was a display of more than 150 chilli varieties all ranging in colours, shapes and sizes.

Melissa Hartridge and her husband Danny from Chichester took their three children along on Friday. Danny said: "It's a real shame about the weather. We weren't sure what to expect because it's all outdoors but we took shelter in the beer tent area and the kids still had an

ice cream!

"It's great to see so many local businesses here, and some we've never heard of before.

"We've enjoyed the samples and it's so good that it's not all hot and spicy so the kids can get stuck in too. We are definitely going to book for next year, just hopefully the sun will be shining."

For keen chilli lovers, or those travelling further afield, the UK's biggest chilli festival also offers visitors the chance to camp and included a competition for the 'Best dressed tent'. THe winner received a family pass to next year’s festival and a hamper.

Pollyanna Hutchinson, owner of Pollyanna's Kitchen makes a condiment called Chillish in West Sussex using an award winning locally sourced Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil. She said: “Another fantastic year at the Chilli Fiesta, the vibe was as fantastic as ever. THere are always so many interesting people who come to this event, from all walks of lifeeven those who don’t like chilli.

"THere are so many wonderful attractions and different things to see and buy. THere is something for everyone, it’s just a wonderful three days of fun and amazing food. THank you West Dean.”

Janice recalls forgotten toy

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN INSPIRATION for Lego has been found by Chichester Post reader, Janice Parsons from Runcton.

Mrs Parsons discovered a set of modelmaking bricks at home, dating from the early 1950s, made by a company called Kiddicraft.

THe bricks looked so similar to the basic Lego bricks that Mrs Parsons did some research. Kiddicraft was a toy company founded in 1932 by Hilary ‘Harry' Fisher Page (1904-1957) at Purley, South London.

THe company is notable for being the predecessor of Lego bricks and Fisher Page was described as ‘a pioneer in the use of plastic to manufacture toy bricks'.

He perfected the first bricks and in 1939 he applied for a patent for ’Toy Building blocks’ made of plastic. An improved version, called ‘Self Locking bricks' was manufactured as a Hilary Page ‘Sensible Toy’ from 1946.

After seeing the latest exhibition at the Novium Museum in Chichester, Bricks Britannia: the History of Britain in Lego bricks, Mrs Parsons felt it was interesting to learn that the original type of these bricks was actually British.

Mrs Parsons said: "THere was only one shape of brick (similar to the basic ones still mostly used) but they came only in red, white or green. THe kit contained many small cards with pictures of various shops, a school, and a fire station that the builder slotted into the bricks, and cards for doors and roofs.

"THe pictures are very old-fashioned now and alone show social history. THere

were also thin wooden connecting strips which helped in building the models.

"THere is a Kiddicraft booklet with instructions on how to make at least 46 models. THis includes a small, simple steam locomotive with cardboard wheels. What a difference from the eight metre Flying Scotsman on display at the museum.

"Over several centuries, many British people have made brilliant inventions, discoveries and advances in many fields such as building, medicine, transport, not to mention modern technology.

"We were world leaders in many fields.

Why is this rarely celebrated? After all, the title of this exhibition is Bricks Britannia: a History of Britain in Lego bricks. Why do we Brits always hide our light under a bushel?"

Hilary Page came to a sad end. His marriage broke up and his business ventures became

stressful. He took his own life in 1957.

Only in 2007 was he recognised as an innovator in child education and toy design with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Toy and Hobby Association.

Mrs Parsons plans to keep the toy which she has treasured since she

was a little girl. She said: "My dad was commuting from Cambridgeshire to London where he sold fruit. I think he got it from Hamley's as he was always looking there at new things.

"I will keep hold of the bricks for now.

I did take them to be auctioned but they weren't worth very much."

Holiday time is fun time around town SUMMER days are fun days for children around Bognor Regis.

THe first sessions of a summer playscheme partly funded by two town councillors has attracted plenty of interest from youngsters.

THe sessions by Bognor Regis Town Council with Bognor Community Action Network have provided plenty of arts and crafts activities, plus sport on Fridays, for young people living around the youth and community centre.

Cllrs Jan Cosgrove and Damien Enticott donated their annual allowances to the scheme. It is taking place from 2pm-4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the centre in Westloats Lane for just £1 a family for each session.

Children under the age of eight must be with an adult.

THis week has also seen the town council's Funshine Days continue mainly at the seafront bandstand.

Tuesday's opening session saw Mujishans the Bubbleman provide the entertainment followed by a Carribean drumming workshop on Wednesday and indoor dancing workshop yesterday.

Kirsten Fitzpatrick, the town council's events officer, said: "THe events have been very popular, even though the weather has been against us to some

In Bersted, the parish council has been hosting summer activities at the Jubilee Playing Fields off Chalcraft Lane as well as two locations around the parish.

Among the enjoyment has been inflatable slides, bouncy castles and zorbing. Debbie Holcombe, the parish council's clerk, said: "THe sessions are going very well as they do every year.

"THey are one of the best events that we stage. THere are children on the field whenever the sessions take place.

OUTSET Youth Action have announced they will be closing operations at the end of the month.

THe group has been operating throughout West Sussex for more than 41 years and is based at Lodge Hill in Pulborough.

In a statement on their website, the group said: "THis has not been an easy decision, nor one that has been made lightly.

"THis is the outcome that the trustees have worked hard to try to avoid.

"Unfortunately, the climate for funding organisations like Outset Youth Action is extremely difficult at present, and does not show any signs of improvement.

"THis has been made worse by West Sussex County Council’s decision to no longer fund any work carried out by Outset Youth Action."

Outset Youth Action works with individuals and groups as well as West Sussex schools delivering group and individual programmes to build esteem, helping young people to engage with and better understand society.

THe Chairman, cllr Peter Evans, former Mayor of Chichester said: “Its a sad time for a long established charity with a proven track record of delivering services for the young people that it now finds itself in a position where it is no longer a viable concern.

Funding reductions by the officers of West Sussex County Council and the difficulties in raising additional necessary funds through other funding streams, have become more challenging year on year."

A birthday treat for A-level star Emily

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk IT WAS a double celebration for Emily Weaver who marked her 18th birthday with a place at university.

Emily was one of many students picking up their A-level results at Bishop Luffa School in Chichester yesterday.

Lots of youngsters had gained places at some of the country's top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, with 99 per cent getting A*-E and 58 per cent gaining an A*-B grade.

It comes as many students are now being graded on final exams with a move away from coursework.

Emily secured a place at the University of Kent to study American studies focusing on history. She got three Bs in physics, English literature and history.

She said: "It's what I was hoping for and I am happy with that. I was nervous because I wasn't sure if I had passed or failed. But it turned out fine in the end so it's all good.

"I'm really looking forward to university - it's a completely new experience.

"It's a good start to my birthday. We are having a party so it should be fun.

Hopefully, no one will be drowning their sorrows too much. I am happy."

Heather Jacobs is going to study mechanical engineering at Cardiff University after getting two Bs and a C. She said: "It's been two years of hell

but I am very pleased. I am relieved and chuffed. I just can't believe it. It hasn't sunk in yet."

Ben Hardcastle, pictured far right, got three A*s in maths, further maths and physics and an A in chemistry. He is going to Imperial College London to study maths.

He said: "I did better than I expected.

I am very happy. I was quite nervous but I had found out that I was going to uni already through UCAS. So I knew that I had done well enough. It was stressful but it worked out well in the end and I am excited for university."

Seth King achieved four A*s in physics, maths, further maths and Latin and has got a place at Oxford University studying classics.

He said: "It's better than I expected.

It's been good but quite hard work.

It's all paid off and it's been worth it."

Will Parker got three A*s in biology, chemistry and maths. He will study medicine at Cambridge. He said: "I knew it was achievable but that it was going to be hard and I had to put in lots of work, but it has paid off. I am a bit nervous about the new environment but it will be fun. It's the next stage in my life."

Nick Taunt, the headteacher at Bishop Luffa School, said: "THese are much tougher exams. THe exams are based on a terminal assessment.

"THat's been a particular challenge for the students and their teachers. I am

"I am also proud of the staff who have put so much into ensuring that our young people do the best that they can."

Mr Taunt is retiring at the end of this month after a 38 year career in education. He said: "I'm excited and very sad. I am sad to leave. It's a wonderful community. I feel very hopeful about the future seeing these young people."

Georgina's Cambridge success

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS at Chichester High School were described as outstanding by the head of the school yesterday as they went to pick up their A-level results.

Yasmin Maskatiya said: "It is amazing to see young people achieve what they have worked so hard for. THey come in as children and leave as adults ready to start their lives."

An emotional Georgina Burgoyne Morris, 18, collected her results and was shocked to see she received full marks in her maths exam with 600 out of 600, giving her an A*. She also received an A* in chemistry and A* in physics.

She said: "I can't believe it. I am completely shocked! I had hoped I'd do this well but I was not expecting to be accepted into Cambridge. I'm going to be studying natural sciences, specifically chemistry. I'm hoping after that to get a job in research, probably around pharmaceuticals."

Georgina's father, Stuart Morris said he was really pleased for her. He said: "I knew she had it in her but you don't like to say, we didn't want to put too much pressure on her. We would have been happy if she went to Cambridge or York university. THe teachers here have given her the love of chemistry and the confidence."

Kate Bolton, 18, achieved an A* in English literature, an A in drama and a B in history.

After taking part in drama for ten years ,including work at the Chichester Festival THeatre, her next step is to go to Bristol University to study drama and hopefully become a theatre director.

She said she was ecstatic, adding: "I got

so much better results than I thought, I am just overwhelmed. I genuinely thought I would get a C in history."

It was not just A-Level results which were successful. Ben Russell, also 18, is the first student from the school to go to university after he received his BTEC Level 3 by studying as part of the Chelsea Football Academy programme.

He said: "It's surreal. I can't believe it's happened, I am delighted. I feel like with the amount of work I have put in, I deserve it. It's been hard, though. I am going to St Mary's University in Twickenham to study primary teaching."

Around 20 per cent of students achieved an A*-A grade, students attaining A*-B accounted for half of the grades awarded and A*-C at 82 per cent is five per cent higher than the national average.

Vickie Smith, the head of sixth form, said: "Students and staff have worked really hard for these results and we are very pleased that their efforts have been rewarded.

We wish our students every success and happiness in their future."

` College hits 99 CHICHESTER College’s A-level pass rate has once again hit 99 per cent.

THe college has also seen an increase in the number of students achieving high grades, with more than 48 per cent celebrating A*-B grades – that’s up more than six percentage points compared to last year.

Helen Loftus, vice principal at Chichester College, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our results this year.

“We have recorded 94 A* and A grades this year, from a cohort of 171 students, which is a fantastic achievement.

“Our students have shown great commitment to achieve the grades they so richly deserve, despite ever increasing demands and assessments becoming harder each year.”

An impressive 25 out of 29 A-level subjects recorded 100 per cent pass rates, including several traditionally difficult subjects such as history and economics.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, chief executive of the Chichester College Group, said: “I am extremely proud of the students and staff at Chichester.

“THe past couple of years have seen major changes to A-levels across the country, with more subjects moving to a linear system – meaning they are heavily assessed by examination.

Choir members are on song for tuneful time f Edward Dawe

Expert surgeon joins hospital EXPERIENCED orthopaedic surgeon Edward Dawe has joined a Chichester hospital.

Mr Dawe will provide a service treating a wide range of foot and ankle problems at the Nuffield Health Hospital based on his experience of more than 12 years.

He will also offer a variety of foot and ankle surgeries which include minimally invasive surgery, keyhole techniques, ankle replacement and complex revision surgery.

As a keen sportsman, he became interested in the importance of feet to keeping active.

SINGING Saturdays are set to bring the joy of getting vocal to more people around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Booking for the events, run by MusicSmart operators Hilary Bishop and Paula McGovern, opens on September 1.

Paula said: "We love our Singing Saturdays. THere is such a friendly atmosphere and we have some great songs lined up.

THe MusicSmart sessions in the area were started by Hilary and Paula last year.

Hilary said: "Many people who join our choirs have not sung for a while, except perhaps in the car or the shower.

"It's always great when they get more confident and start enjoying themselves."

Remember to water those pots!

August is usually the month when most of us go on holiday and leave our gardens to fend for themselves. A little thought before you go and some tender loving care when you return will be enough to make sure that you can go away without worrying about all of your hard gardening work going to waste and you can really relax on your holiday.

Whilst you’re away and your garden is left unattended, many of your plants may suffer due to lack of water. Make sure, before you go, you either arrange to have your containers and baskets watered or set up a system that can supply water on a regular basis to your tubs and baskets. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid or alternatively make a few holes in the lid of a plastic water bottle, cut off the bottom of the bottle, turn upside down into the plant compost and then

fill with water (which slowly drips into the soil).

When the temperature rises it’s good to give plants a thorough soaking – water for at least 20-30 seconds at the base of the plant and watering in the early morning is best. That way the plants will have time to absorb the water and be well hydrated during the hottest hours of the day.

Weeds compete with garden and container plants for water, so it’s especially important to keep the weeds from taking over during dry periods.

Adding a layer of mulch to your pots helps to keep the weeds down. It also helps the soil stay moist and cool, as does the use of ground cover plants around the edges of containers Avoid using fertilisers on plants during a heat wave, especially when the soil is dried out. Plants that are dehydrated will soak up fertiliser faster, which could increase the chances of fertiliser burn.

Also, don’t transplant anything during

a hot spell – plants that are stressed by hot weather may not recover if they’re moved.

Finally – recycle as much water as possible, so use grey water from washing up or washing yourself, install a water butt and re-use paddling pool water.

If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) • Prune Wisteria • Deadhead flowering plants regularly • Water - particularly containers and new plants - preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater • Collect seeds from favourite plants • Harvest home grown vegetables as they become ready • Keep ponds and water features topped up • Look after the lawn • Plan for next year and what bulbs to plant this coming Autumn

Positive thinking is key to being happy MOST OF us are under the impression that opposites attract. And although this may be true for magnets and couples in bad romances, when it comes to the spirit, the opposite is true: like attracts like.

In its simplest form, this means that if you learn to harness the power of positive thoughts, you’ll attract more positive circumstances.

However, thought has it, that if you’re negative, you’ll attract more negativity and pain.

Misery loves company.

Humans have a predisposition to negativity.

We pay far more attention to dark emotions like anger, sadness, pain, and disappointment than we do to great feelings like joy, gratitude, and contentment.

It makes sense when you think about how bad news stays with us, but good news tends to expire.

A picture of a cute little kitten in the morning will be long forgotten by the afternoon, but a violent crime far away can haunt us for years.

Believe it or not, there is science behind this…

Neuroplasticity is an interesting occurrence in which our brains change, shape, and form, depending on our circumstances. What’s even more intriguing is that if thoughts are repetitive, our brain will connect synapses that weren’t previously stimulated to associate those thoughts with other behaviors and turn them into habits.

For example, if you hate your job and you work in a cafe, over time you may find that you despise the smell of coffee. In actuality, you

don’t — but your brain has decided that since you are constantly upset when surrounded by the smell of a fresh coffee, the brew itself must be the problem. In this case, your neurons that light up by the smell of coffee will connect with the neurons that light up when you are depressed. From then onward, the smell of coffee will dampen your spirits.

With this information comes the harsh question that when we are sad, suffering, or in emotional pain, is it because we choose to be?

Negativity is addictive, even though positivity is so much nicer to feel. We spend too little time appreciating our joy and being

happy. Pain is something we have trained ourselves to feel. Is it possible that our addiction to it, as with everything else, can be conquered, and it is truly as simple as making the choice to be happy instead?

1. Meditate THis might just be the best way to clear negativity from your life and bring about emotional and spiritual recovery.

Meditation rejuvenates the mind, makes us more resilient, and rids the body of harmful chemicals that cause stress and anxiety; it centers us.

THink of it this way: if your mind is wired to be miserable, meditation would be the reset button that allows you to unplug, switch off, and tune out. THen, you can easily learn, through meditation, to turn your brain back on and tune into positive thinking frequencies. Meditate often enough and a lot of damage will be undone, leaving you with a clean slate which you can then paint with your own colors — the colors of happiness, of course!

2. Be Thankful Innumerable studies have proven that gratitude makes us happier and floods our brains with dopamine, the one chemical that has the potential to drown out the negative thoughts and anxious feelings that we can carry throughout the day.

Gratitude invokes the law of attraction.

Remember, like attracts like. If you make an effort to be grateful, you will find that you will be blessed with more things to be grateful for.

A fantastic way to consciously practice gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal. Every night before you to go to sleep, list everything you were grateful for throughout the day.

Over time, you will see your lists become much longer!

3. Be Kind Just like with gratitude, kindness has also been proven to make us happier and less stressed.

Studies have also proven, time and time again, that kindness is contagious. If someone is kind to you, you will be inspired to pay it forward, and the person who receives your kindness will feel the same, so on and so forth.

Kindness also inspires gratitude and makes us more inclined to be grateful, so if you are truly struggling with positive thinking and finding something to be thankful for, do a good deed for someone else — you will notice immediately how great it makes you feel.

LORDS is rather a splendid place to be on a match-winning Sunday, a quintessentially English experience rivalled by no other as one surveys the hallowed turf and mixes with likeminded enthusiasts.

Another source of joy this weekend and, apparently lasting until the first of October, is a third off offer on selected wines at M&S. Five white wines caught my eye with a Saint Véran, at the affordable end of the

For ten pounds I was able to avail myself of a 2017 La Tuilerie PouillyFumé from the Loire region of France with its flint-rich soil and producing crisp lime and gooseberry flavours and I was then further intrigued by a Langhe Doc Arneis from Italy's Piedmont region on offer at £9!

THis wine, made from the Arneis grape, which means ‘rascal’ in Italian, is truly a pineapple delight and a very distinctive wine well worth a try!

Two additional white wines of French provenance complete my white selection with a 2017 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse proving to have a certain je ne sais quoi, oozing quality and richness with delectable creaminess and a lingering taste.

Crisp and dry with pineapple and acacia flavours permeating this gem of a wine , this is one which merits serious consideration! Breaking the bank to expend £16.67, the 2013 Domaine du Pimont Saint-Aubin 1er Cru takes creaminess to a new level and will please lovers of white Burgundy with its finesse

THree reds next came to mind beginning with a Produit De Genius 2016 Enfant Terrible Côtes Du Rhône whose characteristic red fruits and spice complement this soft and fruity delight

for the princely sum of £6.33.

For an extra pound I was able to procure a 2017 Morgon made from the Gamay grape and exuding black cherry and liquorice, but my favourite red - currently on offer at £8.67 - remains the 2015

Les Voiles De Paulilles Collioure from a small coastal picture-postcard town south of Perpignan and characterised by ripe red fruits and complex spice notes which regale the palate with a panoply of flavour - Quelle joie! A bientôt!

Olympic champion Alex Danson will be running a hockey masterclass in partnership with leisure operator Everyone Active to offer them an exclusive insight into the sport.

Alex, pictured above, will be visiting the University of Chichester on August 23, fresh from the hockey World Cup in London last month, to lead her masterclass.

She has designed the sessions herself to provide participants with the best opportunities to develop and perfect their skills and will be delivering them with support from a team of expert coaches.

THe masterclasses are aimed at all young people aged 11-16 who have a passion for hockey and will give the participants an insight into a day in the life of a professional player.

As well as a full day of coaching from 9.30am-4pm, all players will receive a goody bag, lunch, and the chance to trial brand new kit from Alex sponsors, STX. THey will also have the outstanding chance to gain one-to-one advice from the Olympic gold medallist and find out what it takes to get to the top of the game.

A NATIONAL campaign has been relaunched in Sussex to raise awareness of drug dealing.

THe initiative by Crimestoppers is intended to raise awareness about county lines and encourage the public to report their concerns about drugs being imported into their area.

County lines refers to gangs and organised criminal networks which export illegal drugs to suburban, rural and coastal areas by using dedicated mobile phone lines or 'deal lines'.

THe gangs exploit children and vulnerable adults to move drugs and money. THey move into the rural or suburban area for a short time by taking over the home of a vulnerable person to use as their base.

Many have taken advantage or have been forced to carry out criminal activity by threats, grooming and extortion to be described as modern day slaves.

Glenys Balchin, the Surrey and Sussex regional manager for Crimestoppers, said: "We know that the term county lines might not be widely recognised, which is why we are launching this campaign and asking for people's help to support us in tackling this issue. We need help to put a stop to this exploitation and the damage that these criminals are inflicting on our communities and those being taken advantage of.

"We are asking people to contact us anonymously through our 0800 555 11 number, or via our secure online form at Crimestoppers-uk.org - both methods are 100 per cent anonymous - always. Together, we can put a stop to this."

Telltale signs of a county line in operation can be a child or young person, sometimes aged only 12, during school hours or unusual hours in a shopping centre, high street or on public transport or a child or young person unfamiliar with an area.

More people calling at an address than usual and sometimes at unsociable hours could be another indication along with suspicious vehicles or people at an address or a neighbour who has not been seen for a while.

Crimestoppers is working closely with the Home Office, which is running a campaign to target staff who may encounter young people who are being exploited by the practice of county lines.

THey are employees in the transport, private security and accommodation sector. THey are being provided with materials such as posters, guidance booklets about how to identifty a young people possibly being exploited and how to safeguard that young person.

TINY tots in Chichester, pictured above, have been hailed as environmental experts.

THe Co-operative Childcare nursery at St Richard's Hospital is among those run by the organisation to have received a prestigious eco accreditation.

It is regarded as a bronze eco-school by Keep Britain Tidy to show it has nominated an eco-committee of children, completed a child-led evaluation of the nursery and created a hands on action plan to make the nursery a greener place.

Kim Orton, the nursery manager, said: "We work hard to create the best nursery environment possible for the children and the eco-school accreditation not only helps us make sure we do so in the most environmentally friendly way possible, it also provides brilliant opportunities for children to explore the world around them.

"One little boy went home from nursery and asked his mum at the supermarket tills why she was using plastic carrier bags, because they are bad for the whales and dolphins.

"Stories like this sum up how important and rewarding it is to teach the next generation as much as we can about the world they live in."

THis work has seen the budding environmentalists embark on learning adventures around the city. THey have been filing out on nature walks, building homes for hedgehogs and feeding stations for butterflies, as well as learning how to save electricity.

The livestock markets of Chichester - part one

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at The Novium Museum SINCE the Roman period Chichester has been a centre for trade, with the forum or administrative centre likely to have been located at the southerly end of North Street on the West Street side.

We know from records that markets belonging to the Earls of Cornwall were held in Chichester in the 12th century. Ownership later transferred to the citizens of the city in 1316. In 1685 this was made official in a charter granted to the city by King James II. Up until the 19th century, the markets took place within Chichester’s main streets.

In Georgian times the general market was held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, whilst the livestock market took place every other Wednesday.

By Victorian times Chichester had separate sites for selling goods dependent on the type of items being sold. THere was the corn market (for grain) located at the Corn Exchange on

East Street, the produce market (for goods like fish, vegetable and butter) located at the Butter Market on North Street, and the Cattle Market for livestock.

THe Corn Exchange and Butter Market have been discussed in prior articles and we therefore won’t go into any further detail here.

Instead we will focus on the Cattle Market, or ‘Beast Market’ as it was known.

THe ‘Beast market’ took place on Wednesday every fortnight. Tethered horses and cattle filled East Street. Pens of calves, sheep and pigs stretched from the Market Cross up North Street and sometimes spilled over into West Street. Every fortnight Chichester was unavoidably a market town, to the annoyance of some residents. In 1866 Charles Swainson writes: “Two streets that lead to the Cross are absolutely impassable…THe cattle and sheep and pigs stand in their own filth for so many

THese problems led many market towns to move the livestock to a new site away from the main streets. Chichester was part of this pattern. A spirited campaign by the citizens of Chichester forced the construction of a new purpose built site away from the city centre.

Building work on the new Cattle Market off Eastgate Square began in 1870.

As livestock markets were moved from city centres, many auctioneers set up on the new market sites. In Chichester, market day sales soon grew under three main companies: Wyatts, Hobgens and Strides.

Stride and Son started in 1890 and specialised in cattle and sheep. Wyatt’s (later becoming Henry Adams and Partners) sold pigs and poultry and were involved in the market from the 1870s.

Auction sales at Chichester were at their height between 1900 and 1920. Some two day sheep sales could include 7,000 or more sheep sent from all over southern England and East Anglia. Buyers came from an equally wide area.

THey included farmers buying store stock for fattening and local butchers buying direct for their own slaughter houses and shops.

Southdowns were the main breed of sheep at Chichester Market until the mid1920s when sheep farming in this area declined. Eventually. Southdowns became outnumbered by other breeds. Another feature of market was the Devon breed of cattle; many were brought from the West Country by train and sold at Chichester for fattening on local farms. Railways also brought sheep to market and sometimes special trains were arranged to bring sheep to the great sales at Chichester.

Caseworkers for the Royal Air Forces Association – Royal Air Forces Association

The RAF Association, the charity which supports the RAF family is looking for caring people to join its team of trained volunteers. The RAF family includes serving and former serving personnel and their dependants. A Caseworker is someone who carries out welfare work for the RAF Association.

Welfare work is about making a visit and listening to an individual to assess their needs to find out how the Association can provide help and support to them. Support can include anything from helping put a client with a recent disability in touch with social services in order for them to put in an application for a downstairs wet room to putting in an application to the RAF Association for funding for a new kettle for a client who cannot afford to replace their broken one. Caseworker volunteers need to be caring and empathetic, with the ability to build a rapport with others and put them at ease through a friendly and sensitive approach.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is an aviation museum showing how a leading RAF station functioned and worked from 1918 to 1970. Group sessions may last up to an hour and a half and include gentle exercises, some standing activities, some mental stimulation, and may include some relaxation. They are looking for volunteers to shadow and assist with seated exercise routine, possibly help with quizzes. They are looking for a reasonably confident outgoing person to run and help with friendly sociable group of older people.

The Guide Dogs charity provides guide dogs and rehabilitation services for blind and partially sighted people to enable them to make the best use of their mobility. My Guides are trained to guide partially sighted and blind people who are not able to have guide dogs. They are carefully matched to help their My Guide partner gain the confidence to go into the outside world again and to experience a fuller life. Volunteers must be 18 years and over, be prepared to have a DBS check and be empathetic to the needs of others. Volunteers need to be able to give two to three hours per week on a flexible basis once partnered, plus two half days for training.

Heather's Middleton target an end PostSport to losing streak as Cuckfield visit MID-TABLE Middleton are looking to snap a mini losing streak as relegation-threatened Cuckfield visit Sea Lane tomorrow (12pm).

Sean Heather's side sit fourth bottom knowing they have all but sealed their Sussex Premier Division status for another year with three games still to play.

But, after being well beaten in their last two, Middleton will want to restore some pride as they host third-bottom Cuckfield.

Even though only one place separates the two sides, the visitors are still looking over their shoulders and need to win at least once to preserve their status for next season.

Middleton will need to play better than they did last weekend when they were well and truly second-best to title-chasing Eastbourne.

After electing to field, the Sea Lane side were stalled by an unbeaten 99 from the home side's skipper Jacob Smith.

THe tally of 226 for 8 was too much for Middleton as Heather (36) saw his team lose their last six wickets for just 16 runs to be bowled out for 134.

In Division Two, both Chichester Priory Park and Bognor Regis are seeking one more win to pull themselves away from the threat

of relegation.

Chi welcome league leaders THree Bridges to Goodwood tomorrow (12.30pm) off the back of a narrow two-wicket win over Ansty.

Matthew Geffen's side were excellent with the ball as Daniel Joseph (3-36) and Mike Smith (3-24) restricted the home side to 168 all out.

In reply, solid contributions from Jay Hartard (35) and Matthew Bennison (32) saw Chi home to a crucial victory which edges them away from the drop-zone.

In winning, they leapfrogged over Bognor who were outclassed by Billingshurst.

Ryan Maskell's side were skittled out for just 83 at Jubilee Fields before the home side knocked off the runs with six wickets to spare.

Next up for Bognor is a home match against St James's Montefiore tomorrow (12.30pm).

In Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to bounce back from a heavy 83-run loss to league leaders Goring as they visit THree Bridges Seconds tomorrow (12.30pm).

Nikki Tabberer (4-43) was the stand out performer for Pagham with the ball but Goring still scored 267 all out, which proved too much for Stuart Hanks' side.

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club continue to soar, taking their season to 6 and 1 with a mercy win against Portsmouth Zombies.

THe Falcons took a while to get going as the prevailing wind made easy catches for the Zombies’ infield.

But, after two quiet innings, pitcher Jason Mercer started a furious ten-run rally which saw Chi bat round the order, including home runs from Peter Martin and Bronte Harvey.

Ally Warr was unlucky to find herself stranded after executing a perfect squeeze play to score David Morris, but got back in the game in the bottom half of the inning with a well taken catch in left field.

THe Zombies had no answer to the Falcons scoring. Shortstop Ben Sawkins and Lucy Morris stifled a few infield grounders before Chi slugged a further five runs on thanks to some smart baserunning by right fielder Hettie McNeil, and debutant catcher Katie Newnham powered a line drive down the third base line for an RBI double.

More windswept walks tortured the Falcons in the fifth. But, with runners on first and second, James Wheeler gratefully grabbed a comebacker on third base to keep the Falcons 15 runs ahead, invoking the mercy rule to win the game 17-2. * THe Falcons will be hosting their second Rookie Night on August 29 giving people the chance to try out the sport and join the club.

THis will be followed by a three-week programme of indoor practice, in time for the indoor league starting in October.

SHORT MAT BOWLS: Members of Boxgrove-based Infinity Short Mat Bowls Club will be going for county recognition as they take part in the West Sussex Open THrees.

A number of trios from the club are taking up the challenge and playing in the competition tomorrow at the county venue in Westergate. All support is welcome.

It comes after four member of Infinity headed to Waterlooville last weekend to the home of Portsdown Short Mat Bowls Club to play in the Portsdown Charity Fours.

THe team of Robin Armstrong, Chris Jeffery, Steve Jeffery and Richard Jeffery won their group but finished runners up to the home team of Portsdown.

Infinity are always looking to welcome new players to the club. Formed in 2010, the club practice every Tuesday from 7.30pm.

RUGBY: Youngsters looking to try out some new rugby are being urged to head along to the Bognor Harlequins Summer Camp.

Running next THursday and Friday, the sessions are open to boys and girls aged six to 14 of all levels of experience.

During the camp, participants will learn to play the Harlequins way, focusing on the values of sportsmanship, enjoyment and team spirit – the very values at the core of Harlequins’ professional team.

As well as fundamental skills like ball-handling tackling and defensive organisation, youngsters will also learn to work as a team, improve their selfconfidence, and make new friends!

THe unique programme has been developed in partnership with the Harlequins Academy, and is in line with the new age grade rugby rules of play.

As well as receiving expert coaching, all participants will receive a free Harlequins gift, discount on Big Game 10 tickets, a chance to win prizes and an exclusive invitation to a Harlequins training session to meet the players.

Smith believes Chi Ladies can improve on eighth-place finish

Ellie sets the pace on debut BOGNOR Tone Zone Runners have been braving the heat to rack up some scorching times as the summer competitions keep coming thick and fast.

Recent weeks have seen club members take to the countryside for a number of testing events.

Among them was the Harting Hill 10 mile race earlier this month.

THe multi-terrain race sees runners head over private tarmac lanes, hard gravel tracks and some paths, as competitors run up to the top of the Downs and then gently down into South Harting.

Despite the tough route, there was an excellent performance from debutant Ellie Pacey.

Running in her first race for the club, she completed the tough course to finish in an impressive time of 1 hour 37 minutes.

Debbie Patching was the next club runner to finish in just under the 1:50 mark. Lisa Robinson, Debs Pacey and Jo Hall all crossed the line in formation, finishing under 1:53.

THe following day, Monday last week, saw another local race, the Goodwood 5 mile

Hill climb run mean another strong turnout for the club.

First home for Tone Zone and second lady overall was the ever impressive Jess THomson in 35:02.

Jess was followed by Anna Enes, Mark Green and Alan Coombs who all ran under 40 minutes.

Sean O’Donnell and Martin Playford finished together just over the 40 minute mark.

Sam Miles and Stephen Goddard both ran strong races in the evening sun, both finishing one after another in 45 minutes.

Ian Buchan and Zoe Hemes both finished strongly to record a sub-50 for the hilly course.

It rounds off a successful few weeks for the club, which continues to go from strength to strength and now boasts more than 200 members.

It thrives itself on a reputation as a running club catering for all abilities of running across the Bognor and surrounding areas.

From the base at Arun Leisure Centre, Felpham, sessions run on Tuesday and THursday evenings at 6.30pm.

CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Aaron Smith says his side are buzzing ahead of getting their National League South season underway this weekend.

Chi will welcome Oxford United to Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm) targeting a top half finish in the third tier of the women's game.

Smith's side rounded off the pre-season preparations with a 4-2 loss to Championship side Tottenham Hotspur in front of nearly 300 people last weekend. Jess Lewry and Helen Ogle got the goals - and Smith believes the performance sets Chi up well for the season ahead, starting against Oxford.

He said: "THere are a few things we need to work on but we will give them a good game.

"We finished eighth last season and we want to improve on that. THe girls are buzzing and saying they want to be here and hopefully the crowd that we had for the Spurs game will be back to see us against Oxford."

THe Green and White Army have also received a boost with the news that midfielder Molly Clark has re-signed from West Ham. Chi have also been drawn against local rivals Portsmouth in the determining round of the League Cup on September 2.

SELSEY boss Daren Pearce is looking to capitalise on his first win in the Blues dugout with two matches in quick succession.

THe former Sidlesham manager has been in rebuilding mode at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium this summer, adding a number of young players to the squad.

After losing their opening match in the SCFL Division One campaign, Selsey showed their form in the Peter Bentley Cup, dispatching Billingshurst 4-0 last weekend.

Next for Pearce's side is a trip to league newcomers Alfold tomorrow (3pm) before a home match against Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Bailey's side will look to rectify that tomorrow when they host Billingshurst (3pm).

In the SCFL Premier, Chichester City will be looking to bounce back from being dumped out of the FA Cup. Miles Rutherford's side suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss away at Bearsted in the preliminary round of the world's oldest knockout competition, despite going ahead through Dan Hegarty.

Chi, who are the early pacesetters after netting eight in winning both their opening matches, have the perfect chance to get back on track with two home games in four days.

First up is a visit from another team with a 100 per cent record as Horsham YMCA come to town tomorrow (3pm).

THat is followed by a home game against Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham get their season underway on the road at Roffey tomorrow (3pm).

THe match will pitch two of the league's strongest sides against each other in what should be an excellent contest.

It will also be the first competitive match for new Bosham boss Denis Hughes, who has taken over from Gary Lines.

After winning the league two seasons ago, many at Walton Lane are hoping for a season that results in some form of silverware.

Cup run continues for impressive Lions PAGHAM'S unbeaten start to the season continues as the Lions march on in to the next round of the FA Cup. THe Nyetimber Lane side needed a replay to overcome Southern Counties East League side K Sports as the Kent side twice came from behind to force a return match.

Two Dan Simmonds goals secured a 2-0 win under the lights on Tuesday evening in the replay, taking Pagham into the first qualifying round of the FA Cup for the fifth year running.

Next up for the Lions in the cup competition is a trip to fellow SCFL Premier side Newhaven next Saturday (August 25).

But, before then, the unbeaten Lions face two tough league matches in four days heading to Crawley Down Gatwick tomorrow

(3pm) before a trip into the country to play Loxwood on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

As one of only four teams in the SCFL Premier with a 100 per cent record, the Lions will be keen to keep up their good form against two sides who are yet to win in the league so far this term.

But joint-managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen know that nothing can be taken for granted. If they are to improve on last season's third place finish, it is matches away at sides in the bottom half which will be the difference.

Central to coming away with positive results will be the strike partnership of Simmonds and George Gaskin who have notched seven of Pagham's ten goals this term.

Pearce vows there's more to come despite unbeaten start Next Game

BISHOP'S STORTFORD (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows there is still plenty more to come despite the Rocks kickstarting their season with four points from six.

THe Nyewood Lane side followed up a 2-2 draw at Haringey Borough on opening day with a 3-1 midweek victory over Merstham.

THe undefeated start to the season leaves the Rocks sixth at this early stage of the season.

With Bishop's Stortford, who are yet to win this season, visiting the Nye Camp tomorrow (3pm), Bognor have the chance to extend their positive early form.

But Pearce believes there is definite room for improvement for his young squad.

Speaking after the Merstham match on Rocks Radio, the veteran manager said: "I was delighted with the goals and pleased for the supporters who have stayed loyal to us despite seeing us beaten a lot over the last year at home.

"But I was not too pleased with the performance to be honest. THere's a long way to go yet."

After falling behind to an early strike from the Surrey side on Tuesday, Portsmouth loanee Brad Lethbridge evened things up with his first goal for the club moments later.

Central defender Chad Field poked home on the half hour mark to put Bognor in front.

Dan Smith, another Pompey player, then sealed the victory before the break.

THe result was far from certain, though, as

Bognor keeper Dan Lincoln, who committed his immediate future to the club on the eve of the season, showed his worth.

Pearce said: "If it wasn't for Dan it could have been 3-3.

"THe most important thing was that the three goals we scored all were well taken. I'm pleased for the boys as last year we would have lost as we would have not scored.

"THere's still a long long way to go and we need to improve a hell of a lot."

THe win on Tuesday evening came a few days after a Smith strike and an own goal secured a well-deserved point at White Hart Lane in North London on the opening day.

While making it clear that he believes the club can improve at the back, Pearce said he was delighted with how the Rocks are firing in front of goal.

He singled out the additions of the two young Portsmouth loanees for improving his side in attack - despite Lethbridge missing the Haringey match due to being on tour with the League One side's development squad in Holland.

Pearce said: "It's nice to see people who can score goals as we have not had that in a while.

"THey have both settled in well and I expect good things still to come from both of them."

Pearce also indicated that there may be at least one further addition to his squad in the coming days.

New Rocks recruits are likely IT'S BECOME a running theme in recent years at Bognor Regis Town Football Club.

THe season starts and the club still has big question marks over who will be turning out for the club and what position they will fill.

THis year is no different.

It was only two days before the first match against Haringey last weekend that manager Jack Pearce confirmed Dan Lincoln would remain the club's goalkeeper this season, despite interest from clubs elsewhere in the football pyramid.

At the same time, Bognor also announced that former Charlton defender Archie Edwards would be rejoining.

THe left back, who played youth football for England while at the Addicks, had a short stint at Nyewood Lane last season so is well aware what is expected at the club.

Speaking after the Merstham match, Pearce said: "Dan played very well and let's hope he continues. Archie is perhaps struggling for fitness. He played Saturday as well as Tuesday and two games at this level in such a short space of time may be too much for him."

Pearce continues to look for new additions with an experienced head in midfield the key target as the season rolls on.

WELL, the season is underway and we've kicked it off with four points from six.

Overall I'm quite happy.

A point away from home is always a good point, and you can't complain when you win at home.

But we still need to stop giving away silly goals. We've given away two in two now - so that needs to stop.

At Haringey we didn't really know what to expect. When you play a team who have come from another league it's always tough as they are used to winning.

Two or three of their players were excellent, including a winger who at times we couldn't get near and a striker who scored the goal of the season already. THey will cause teams trouble this season.

I was involved in the equaliser - I think it was Smithy who drove it back across the box and I put pressure on the defender. It's gone down as an own goal I think but I will be claiming it!

With Merstham on Tuesday, the first 20 minutes things didn't click for us - they were the better side and our press was not good enough.

THey are a good footballing side so we needed to win the ball back. THe first 20 minutes we didn't do that. THen we brought the wing backs a bit narrower, we started to win the ball and counter, which is how we got the goals.

Into the second half and we probably could have knocked in a few more but the focus was on keeping a clean sheet.

It's good to have Dan Lincoln confirmed in goal. Everyone knows he is quality.

He is one of the best keepers in the league and could be playing at a higher level.

As a defender and midfielder, it's good to have someone behind you who you know will be difficult to beat if an attacker gets through. He has got a horrendous dress sense mind!

It's also good to have Archie Edwards back at left back. He is a good footballer but also physical too. When he was here last year he made it clear then that he likes to get stuck in and he's not afraid of a fight.

We need a few more like that for when we come up against physical sides.

It's been good to get to know the Pompey lads better too.

Brad [Lethbridge] hasn't been at training as he's been on tour with Pompey.

But he came in on Tuesday, scored and worked hard before coming off after 80 minutes due to being shattered.

Smithy has the ability to be our top scorer this year. He is strong, quick, he works hard and is a good lad. He is the full package and has a really good opportunity to play at a high level as his career progresses.

Next up for us is Bishops Stortford. I can't remember playing them before but we will be expecting them to be similar to other teams in this division - they will be able to play football and will be physical at the same time.

If we are to do well, we will need to match fire with fire.

We will need to earn the right to play.

It's probably too early to tell yet how this level compares with the National South. But I think the two teams we have played so far would have held their own.

I think last year we showed we could match sides in keeping the ball.

But those really good sides were so organised, fit and strong they kept in their shape and scored on the counter.

Looking ahead, we can still play a lot better.

But winning is a great feeling and, hopefully, once we start to put a few results together we will start to relax.

It was tough losing every week last year so hopefully we will start to get a few points and then see where we are.
