Minibus charity's shock end

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PASSENGERS around Chichester have been left confused after a transport charity's shock closure.

It was announced on Wednesday that Sammy Community Transport had made its last journey.

A statement issued by its directors

said: "After 47 years serving the community, Sammy Community Transport (incorporating Arun Coordinated Community Transport) is to close its doors. Recent months have shown a decline in reserves as parts of Sammy showed lower income and indeed in certain areas losses were sustained.

"Rather than struggle on in this environment and eventually letting

people down, and also respecting concern that staff would have not known their future, the directors have decided, with much regret, to stop running the organisation as it is."

Sammy left its North Bersted premises last May and moved to Salisbury House, City Fields Way, Tangmere where local charity, Dementia Support is also based.

THe charity held 20 Chichester based

volunteer car drivers, 13 part time minibus drivers, five WAV Drivers (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles) and four part time and one full time office staff.

In addition to the Chichester team they also had 30 volunteer car drivers based at their other office, in Ford, with six part time minibus drivers and four part time office staff.

Council's report shows high service

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PROJECTS to improve the environment, boost the local economy and schemes to help support vulnerable residents are just some of the key projects which have been making a difference across Chichester district over the last year.

THe council’s annual report, which examines performance over the last 12 months, has found that overall performance is excellent, with staff delivering a large number of projects while maintaining a high level of service for residents.

One key theme has been the health and wellbeing of residents. THe council’s Wellbeing team, in partnership with local GPs and West Sussex County Council, has been preparing to launch its new social prescribing service. THis will place four new staff members in GP practices across the district to work with people who have non-medical issues and require more community-based solutions.

THe Homelessness Reduction Act was introduced by the Government last year, and the council’s housing team has been preparing for this. It means the council has new duties to help people at risk of becoming homeless and gives the council longer to work with people who are under threat of homelessness. As part of this work, the council purchased an empty property to help provide more temporary accommodation and there are also plans to extend it in order to provide even more units.

Another key theme is the economy.

THe £6 million district council funded

Enterprise Centre in Terminus Road, Chichester, opened in June. Operated

by Basepoint, it provides flexible rental space for small and starter businesses.

Work is also progressing on the new industrial units at Plot 21, Terminus Road. In addition, the council has also invested money in a bespoke training programme for independent retailers in the district’s key high street areas. Work on the Southern Gateway regeneration – the largest the city has seen for a generation – is also progressing.

THe regeneration is one of the longterm projects being delivered as part of the Chichester Vision. THe Chichester Vision is a 20-year plan to help enhance the city in order to create better jobs and boost business and prosperity for everyone who lives, works and visits the city.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: "I have been extremely impressed by what the council has achieved over the last year and I know that officers have been working very hard.

“Despite austerity, all the key indicators show that we are managing to maintain a high level of service and resident satisfaction, all while keeping council tax rises to the absolute minimum.

“We want to ensure that the district remains a beautiful place so I am pleased that our Against Litter campaign is having such a positive impact across the district.

“As ever, our aim is to be as efficient as possible and use resources wisely, providing core services in the most effective way possible.”

RESIDENTS in Selsey have helped launch the town’s first Community Speedwatch to reduce vehicle speeds in the area.

Chichester District Council’s community warden Neil Hill has been vital in getting the scheme set up.

Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where residents support the police to monitor vehicle speeds in their local area. THe scheme has been launched in Selsey in response to residents’ concerns about speeding vehicles in the town and rural areas, with the aim of educating

drivers to slow down.

Five residents in Selsey have registered and completed their training from police to take part in the scheme. THe volunteers will be monitoring vehicle speeds in different locations around Selsey using special cameras that detect vehicle speeds and record number plates. Drivers who are caught speeding will be referred to police.

Abbeyfield Supported Housing in Westgate offers residents the independence of having their own room in a home from home environment.

Mavis Sharp has been at Abbeyfield since 2016 and her son, Graham Simmonds, saw just how happy his mother was and he was impressed with the friendly care from the Abbeyfield

House team. He began to think he would like to give the charity a meaningful gift of some sort.

Mr Simmonds was installing solar panels at his home and realised what a boost the cost saving clean energy system really was, which prompted the thought of the gift.

THe trustees agreed and last week 40 energy saving solar panels were installed by father and son team from Energise UK and funded by Graham.

He said: "Mum and I both felt we want to contribute something and something that would be beneficial to have and for the environment.

"For me, it was an easy choice. It is a charity for one but also its a place for mum to be safe and warm and is well looked after.

"It takes the home off the grid and saves them around ÂŁ4,000 a year which isn't bad for a ÂŁ20,000 investment."

THe excess electricity which is produced but not used goes to the battery and can be used at night.

Abbeyfield Trustee Alwyn THompsonDyke said: "It has certainly been the weather for testing them out and already their energy output has, well almost literally, gone through the roof. THank you so much Graham."

THe news was greeted with dismay by members of the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street, Bognor Regis.

Centre manager Sarah Smith said between 15-20 members daily used Sammy. "I don't know how they are going to get in because it has been their lifeline." She said.

Statistics at Sammy's last annual meeting last July stated it had 7,235 members the previous month and they travelled 102,152 miles.

Sammy was formed in 1973 when a Bognor Regis businessman, Samuel Jay, left money to buy a minibus. In 2012 Sammy absorbed the management and day to day running of the services provided by the now dissolved Chichester Community Transport.

THis service had served its local community for 10 years and in its final year, transported 6,800 passengers using its Dial -A- Ride service.

Gary Hardley, head of community activities for Age UK West Sussex, said: "It's a really sad day and unfortunate for everyone at Sammy and those who use the services. We worked closely

with them for the last four years.

"I am currently in discussions with West Sussex County Council and district councils to see what can be done.

"We are also working with local charities, taxi companies and other county transport services and hope to sort something soon."

THe statement from Sammy said the need to pay staff for office work as well as driving in recent years had pushed some journeys into losses.

Tougher laws had also driven up expenses coupled with declining grants from councils. New laws which would mean chaperones for trips and a proposed licensing structure for drivers would have created an unacceptable burden.

"It is hoped that smaller localised parts of the roles undertaken will start up again once all is clear," the statement added.

"While this will undoubtedly be disappointing news to our many clients, and sponsors, please be assured that we will do everything possible to determine if we can once again rise to the challenge."

` Police reports SUSSEX Police had eight reported vehicle break-ins at beauty spot car parks in Chichester last week.

Offences have taken place at Stansted Park, Chidham Lane, West Stoke, Cobnor Point, Eartham Woods and Selhurst Park.

Police are urging people to ensure that if they are using the beauty spot car parks they should not leave any valuables in their vehicle, even if they are hidden from sight.

On Monday, July 16, in Chestnut Avenue, Chichester, a works van was broken into outside a building site and tools taken. Serial 1104 16/7.

In THe Avenue, Chichester, also on July 16, a vehicle on a driveway was damaged by a pellet. Serial 0516 16/7.

Two bikes were stolen from a bike shed in Broyle Road, Chichester, on Tuesday, July 17. Serial 0442 19/7.

On Wednesday, July 18, a property in Fishbourne Road East, Chichester, was broken into. Some jewellery and electronic items were taken. Serial 0984 18/7.

On Saturday, July 21, a property was broken into in THe Broadway, Chichester.

Jewellery, foreign currency and electrical equipment were stolen. Serial 0848 21/7.

A property in Westgate, Chichester, was broken into via a smashed French door on Saturday, July 21. A wallet was stolen from the property. Serial 0950 21/7.

In Marisfield Place, Selsey on Wednesday, July 18, a garage was broken into and a motorcross bike and sets of car wheels were stolen.

Hundreds back petition for gym

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PETITION has been launched asking Chichester District Council to rethink its decision of a gym in Selsey.

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, planning permission for construction of a private gym and health club in Selsey by Kevin Byrne, pictured below, previous owner of Checkatrade, was refused at its planning meeting.

Mr Byrne was looking to change the part-built building but councillors refused it, saying it had not been marketed enough to know if it would work.

Mr Byrne said the reaction to the refusal had been overwhelming with virtually everyone shocked and stunned at the council's decision.

He said: "Someone has to stand up and say the process is wrong. My application was revolving around a £1.7m investment in Selsey.

"THis received the same attention on the day as a change of signage for the restaurant Zizzi in Chichester. It was clear to me that the councillor that had the last say at the hearing, it was their opinion that carried the most weight.

"As the applicant and the person ploughing in the £1.7m I was given three minutes to offer my case at the start of the hearing, I then sat and listened to the councillors who some clearly hadn’t even read the brief notes.

"I had to sit through things being discussed that simply weren’t factual or relevant. I don’t believe an applicant should be able to butt in, but I do believe the applicant on significant applications should be asked if they would like to briefly address anything that may have been said at the end before the councillors vote."

He called on the council to rethink its decision. “With the weight of the petition and professional comments I’m compiling I’m hoping to get a better result."

Electric cars in city will help improve air quality by council basis.

“Introducing electric vehicles will not only help us to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions, but it will also reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”

THe vehicles are only available at Chichester at this stage, but may be rolled out to other council hubs if the trial is successful.

Deborah added: “As well as the environmental benefits, the new vehicles will also provide financial savings in the long-run as low emission vehicles are less costly to maintain and cheaper to run. THey’re also exempt from road fund licensing.”

A NEW fleet of electric vehicles has been introduced at County Hall in Chichester as West Sussex Council County takes steps to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions.

Four pool cars have been unveiled for staff to use when making essential business trips and the vehicles have already proved to be very popular.

Deborah Urquhart, cabinet member for environment, said: “THe government has announced plans to ban new petrol and diesel cars by 2040. We want to increase the uptake of electric vehicles in the county and as a first step we are introducing electric cars for staff to use on a six-month trial

Three centenary celebrations in one at the Sidlesham fete

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE PROSPECT of rain didn't deter visitors or the sun from shining brightly on Saturday in Sidlesham.

THe annual summer fete in Sidlesham, organised by the Chichester City Band, celebrated all things centenary with 100 years of the RAF, 100 year since the end of the First World War and 100 years of women's suffrage.

THe celebrations were reflected in the variety of costumes worn by stallholders and villagers and the plentiful bunting fluttering in the lively breeze and helped to raise £8,500 for St Mary's Church.

Air Commodore Michael Allisstone (retired), a long-time resident of Sidlesham, arriving in one of the many classic cars attending, was welcomed by the Rev Stephen Guise, and opened the fete in grand style.

In St Mary’s church, the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum set up a fascinating display of RAF history, beside the mini show of produce, cookery and flowers.

On the vicarage field, there was a variety of sideshows to be enjoyed, including the runaway train (staffed by Chichester Air Cadets) the coconut shy, hook a duck, and, not wanting to leave out the village animals, visitors could guess the ages and weights of Chris Spiby’s calves and lambs and watch the usual most enjoyable dog show with

classes for every variety of dog – puppies, rescue dogs and waggiest tails.

For refreshments, delicious homemade teas were on offer, served from the new parish rooms, and a Pimms tent, Ron’s beer stall and Caroline’s dairy ice creams, too.

Lucky chancers won bottles of whisky, teddies, valuable vouchers for jewellery and days out, and all this to the accompaniment of the Chichester City Band, which also fielded a team for the tug-of-war and beat the best village team!

Andrea Cifelli, secretary of Chichester City Band, said: "Sidlesham Fete is one of our favourite events of the summer — it has great stalls, lots of activities and particularly delicious cakes!

"THis year, refreshments were served

in the stunning new church hall, which provided shelter from a very energetic wind that was doing its best to blow the stalls and our tent away — we were very lucky not to lose our music.

"Fortunately, we never go anywhere without a plentiful supply of clothes pegs and magnets so the show was able to go on.

"Of course, the most important part of the afternoon at Sidlesham is always the tug of war! We were thrilled to repeat our 2017 success, winning not only the title but also (for the first time) a trophy!

"We’ll keep it nicely polished until 2019, when we look forward to our next title defence — we might just play a little music, too."

` Bosham sea wall ESSENTIAL repairs start soon on part of Bosham’s sea wall, which has been damaged by the tide.

THe works are due to start on Monday and last for about five weeks, during which the lower part of Shore Road will be closed to traffic. THis is for the safety of the public and the workforce, although pedestrian access past the works will be maintained at all times.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “Works are required to repair a length of the flint wall facing, which has been damaged by high tidal conditions.

“THe actual core ‘retaining’ element of the wall was not damaged and remains structurally sound.

“Measures had already been taken to strengthen the remaining wall facing and these further works will minimise the possibility of other problems occurring.”

THe new flintwork will match the appearance of the existing materials.

City MP joins in on 999 call

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan spent the afternoon at Chichester Fire Station last THursday.

Mrs Keegan spent the afternoon with B Watch fire crew to find out more about the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and join them in a training exercise.

On arrival, Mrs Keegan was shown around the fire station where she saw the different vehicles and vital equipment that allow the fire service to carry out their job as safely and quickly as possible.

Chichester station has three types of specialist vehicles they use to respond to a wide range of incidents such as fires, floods, road traffic collisions and incidents in our coastal waters.

Despite the hot weather, Mrs Keegan put on the uniform to take part in one of the training exercises B Watch practise regularly. THe exercise involved using the hydraulic cutting equipment to take the roof and doors off a car demonstrating the procedure followed when the fire service assist in road traffic collisions to free casualties from vehicles.

` Walking festival GOOD weather and a free prize draw capped off a wonderful week of activities for hundreds of participants of the Selsey Walking and Outdoor Festival (SWOF) which explored the wildlife, sea, history, landscape, heavens and flora of the Manhood Peninsula by foot, buggy, bike and sea.

Ann Humphrey, chairman of the festival said, “I am delighted that the event, now in its 5th year, again proved to be successful and made the hard work, organising and running the festival, worthwhile.”

Monies raised by the event are used to support local charities.

Dr John Mason from the South Downs Planetarium led a star gazing walk and another of his fascinating seminars at the Selsey Centre which proved to be highly popular.

Events during the week also included walks, cycling, natural history, and snorkelling. It also catered for toddlers and those with disabilities.

City Mayor plans a calendar full of exciting charity events

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE CITY'S Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, has confirmed a diary packed full of events coming up in aid of his two chosen charities.

Stonepillow and the Oxmarket Centre of Arts are the Chichester charities Cllr Bell has chosen for this year and with the help of Cllr Clare Apel, who is running the mayor's charities organisation, they have already arranged a number of plans to raise vital funds.

Cllr Bell said "THe Oxmarket Gallery receives no funding at all. It has to survive as a community arts centre on small commissions it charges.

"Stonepillow is a charity close to my heart and I have been a trustee there for about ten years now."

One of the events is a sponsored bike ride from John O'Groats to Chichester, which is approximately 731 miles. THe usual ride is called LEJOG (Lands End to John O'Groats) so the Mayor has aptly named this event as JOGChi. Keen cyclists, Justin Bulpett, Cllr Apel's son, and Malcolm Meaby, pictured right, will be departing from John O'Groats on Tuesday, August 21, and arriving in Chichester onTHursday, August 30.

THere will be an opportunity for members of the public to join in the final stage along Centurion Way from West

Dean to the Cross in the city centre.

Cllr Bell said: "St Richard's of Chichester Christian Chair is the previous name of Stonepillow. THey changed the name about ten years ago.

"THe story in the Bible says that the prophet Jacob was rough sleeping in the desert and he slept with his head on a stone. THat night he dreamt of a ladder leading from the stone to heaven.

"It fitted very well with what Stonepillow were doing. Its a journey to recovery and normal life.

"So our lads will be cycling to the Palace of Scone to pay tribute to the original Stonepillow on which the charity’s name is based. THe provost of Perth in

Scotland will also be greeting them there."

Laura Bulbeck, Stonepillow's PR and events manager, said: "We are really excited with all these upcoming events and are really pleased to be one of the mayor's charities."

On Saturday, September 22, there will be a garden party in Rymans at the back of Appledram Church, which is owned

by Suzanne Gayford who is a trustee of Oxmarket. THere will be an evening do with wine and nibbles and an auction.

THe two bicycles ridden for the JOGChi event will be up for auction, too.

Starting on Monday, October 15, there will be a mayors charities art exhibition at the Oxmarket Gallery and that will take over the whole gallery for two weeks.

A guitar concert with Amanda Cook will also be held at the gallery on Friday, November 2.

Gallery manager, Sofia Williams said: "It's great to be one of the mayor's chosen charities. It's really good exposure for the gallery as well as raising important funds." ` Hot property YOU may have noticed it’s been a little warm of late. But with thunder storms and rain forecast to hit us as I type, it looks like ten days of 30+ degree temperatures may be as close as we get to the record, which stands at 18 consecutive days, set in 1976.

Back then, a pint of milk cost 9p, a loaf of bread cost 18p and, more on topic for my weekly property article, the average home in the UK cost £11,739. Compared to the average salary at the time (£2,651) a house cost 4.4 times the average annual income.

In the intervening 42 years, the cost of a pint of milk has increased 389 per cent, a loaf of bread 483 per cent and, while average salaries have increased by a healthy 941 per cent, house prices have done so by a whopping 1,728 per cent.

With today’s average property price of £214,578 compared to the average UK salary of £27,600, it means the average home costs us Brits 7.8 times our annual income, which is close to twice as expensive comparatively as during the heatwave of 1976!

It also means those who bought a property back in the summer of ’76 will have on average made a little over £200,000 on their purchase; around 7.2 per cent per year on an annualised basis.

Of course, we all know that property in some areas is more expensive than others, so let’s take a look at which region saw the greatest increase in those 42 years. It won’t surprise many of you that accolade goes to London; where property prices rose from £14,862 in 1976 to £468,845 today - a rise of 3,055 per cent.

In 1976 Northern Irish property was more expensive than the UK average and only 14 per cent below that of London.

And just think, if we have to wait another 42 years to see such a heatwave again, the year will be 2060 and if house prices have risen the same as they have done in the past, the average property price in the UK will be £3.7m!

Dog grant to help veterans

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ARMED FORCES charity, the Veterans’ Foundation, has given vital funds to help train more assistance dogs to support former members of the British armed forces.

THe Edinburgh-based national charity has awarded the Veterans’ Lottery grant to Canine Partners, a charity in Midhurst which helps to transform the lives of people living with disabilities in the UK, boosting their confidence and independence by providing amazing assistance dogs.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks, including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and can fetch help in an emergency.

Dale Gormley, Canine Partners’ Scotland community manager, said: “We are delighted to have received a generous grant from the Veterans’ Foundation to help us train more

assistance dogs for former service personnel.

“Grants are vital to us as a charity as they allow us to train more amazing dogs, which in this case will transform the lives of former members of the armed services across the UK.” Each partnership created by Canine Partners costs £20,000 from selection as a puppy to the dog’s retirement at approximately 12 years old.

“We are delighted to support the excellent work of Canine Partners by awarding the Veterans’ Lottery grant,” said Major General David Shaw, Veterans’ Foundation chief executive.

“Highly trained assistance dogs can be life-changing for veterans with physical disabilities in that they provide independence and confidence to make the successful transition to civilian life.”

Canine Partners receives no government funding and solely relies on donations and legacies to keep creating life-transforming partnerships.

New classroom for Dell Quay STAFF, teachers, children and sponsors came together to celebrate the complete refurbishment of the classroom at the Chichester Harbour Education Centre at Dell Quay.

THe classroom, which provides a learning base for school field trips to the harbour, has been fitted with new toilets, cupboards, flooring and decoration to provide a modern, bright and practical base for the 11,000 field trips sessions delivered annually by the education service.

A reception was held to show the new facilities to everyone involved in the project. Representatives from the two main funders, the Friends of Chichester Harbour and THe Woodger Trust, were present, along with teachers and children who use the education centre regularly.

Jane Latawski, education officer, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, said:

“Our classroom was first converted from an old store room 20 years ago. Since then, the facilities have become rather tired and we didn’t have enough toilets to cope with the large school parties that visit, particularly when the children are very young.

"THis refurbishment has allowed us to extend the bathroom facilities, introduce better storage and a lovely hardwearing new floor - we are delighted with the results!”

Richard Austin, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty manager, commented “We are extremely grateful to the funders for their generosity. We collectively recognise the importance of education in introducing the next generation of conservationists to the unique location that is Chichester Harbour to inspire them to protect its special qualities for the future.”

Growing big things at Cass

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to Cass Sculpture Foundation were invited to a specialist workshop making terrariums.

London Terrariums held an afternoon session making a Tiny John terrarium where participants could learn how a terrarium works, how these selfcontained ecosystems survive so well on their own and how to look after them.

Session leader, Emma Sibley from London Terrariums, started with a short introduction explaining the history and science that goes into building a terrarium, from the different plants you can use to why activated charcoal has become an essential.

THen it was up to visitors to get their hands in there and build their own. By the end of the session, people had their own exciting miniature garden to take away and watch develop over the coming months and years.

A terrarium is usually a sealable glass container containing soil and plants, and can be opened for maintenance to access the plants inside, often kept as decorative or ornamental items.

Jennie Langdon, from Chichester, attended the workshop and said: "I love doing this sort of thing. I have done a few things up here before but not terrariums.

"It is great fun coming to Cass and there are always lots of nice people. It's a beautiful setting, too. What a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon!"

THose attending the workshop used various tools to help aid them in working through such a small gap which included corks on sticks to help push down

compost, extra long tweezers, bent paintbrushes and funnels.

Christine Smith and her husband, Kevin, travelled from Crawley for the workshop and to visit the sculpture park.

Christine said: "We're just starting to get into gardening. I was looking at how to decorate our new house and we wanted to try something different from an interiors plants point of view.

"Finding the workshop was a great thing for me. THe beginning was really informative with the background information, where they came from etc.

"It was of great interest learning how they came about and the tutorial with a little demo was great so we don't mess them up!"

Emma said: " We had 18 people in the Tinyjohn workshop which is such a great number. We had such a lovely group of people at Cass, some were amateur gardeners, some had never gardened in their lives, we had some children as well which was lovely!

"THis is what I love most about the workshops the mix of people that meet each other and bond over trying to get these plants in these tiny jars!"

Artists' signs of the times ARTISTS have used their creative skills to put Felpham on the map.

Four members of Felpham Art Group have painted illustrations of the area for roadside signs.

THey have been installed at the entrances to the village – on Upper Bognor Road opposite Butlin’s, the B2259 Felpham Way south of the Arun Leisure Centre, the Flansham Lane/Flansham Park junction and the Middleton Road boundary with Middleton.

One of the artists chosen by Felpham Parish Council for the signs was Helen Dungey. THe Rustington resident depicted Blake’s Cottage, St Mary’s Church, yachts sailing off the shore and yellow rays from the angel wings in the church’s Blake memorial window.

“It’s wonderful to have my sign being seen by so many people each day. I am very pleased with the finished result,” she said. “It looks fantastic. THe sign has been really well done. It certainly does justice to my design.”

A former library worker, she has been a member of the art group for some five years and has been concentrating on painting for 15 years.

She said: “I like the creative process and the challenges that are involved. THe signs were a different sort of challenge and that’s why I wanted to get involved.”

THe parish council has been seeking to provide the gateway signs for more than two years. THe project has cost a few thousand pounds.

Its vice-chairman, Cllr Gloria Moss,

said: “THe signs define the shape of Felpham for the first time so that people know where its boundaries are.

“We have had to get planning permission and then permission from highways officers for the signs but everyone has been very helpful. I was proud to lead this project. Felpham Art Group was the ideal image creators.”

Art group chairman Terry Collins said: “We are honoured to be involved in a project like this. THe group wants to be involved in the community and this seemed like a very opportune and memorable project to do. THe way the signs have been produced is terrific.”

Nine members of the group’s 125 entered their designs, he said. THe others who were chosen were Phil King (Felpham/Middleton boundary, pictured above right), Reginald Marlow (B2259) and Graham Goll (Flansham Lane).

Cllr Mrs Moss thanked West Sussex County Council highways officer Ben Whiffin, Tommy THompson, Bill Matthews, Anthony Ellis and John Taylor for their help with the project.

NEW CHANGING facilities have been installed by the Aldingbourne Trust to enable families to enjoy a day out together.

THe facilities at its country centre are suitable for anyone with a disability to use.

THey form part of its multi-million pound new building at the centre north of the A27.

Called Changing Places, it has a height adjustable changing bench, a tracking hoist system, enough space for a disabled person and two carers and a non-slip floor among other features.

Mum Sarah Gooderham said: "In the past, we have only been able to able a spend a morning in certain places because of a lack of changing facilities.

"THis has made us feel rather guilty when it comes to having to refuse my able-bodied son to stay and enjoy the rest of the day.

"THis is a huge thing many people just don't understand."

THe new building also boasts a cafe, shop and conference facilities.

NO OBJECTION has been raised by Arun District Council to Network Rail's plan to install a new building next to the Yapton level crossing.

THe relocatable equipment building is part of the rail network owner's plans for a £4m upgrade of the site between North End Road and Yapton Lane this winter.

Show takes audience back to the Nineties TIME-TRAVELLING student performers took their audiences back to the Nineties in a Bognor Regis school's show.

THe cast of Popstars The 90s Musical wowed their guests during a week of shows at THe Regis School as the summer term ended.

THey staged four all-action shows of singing and dancing over three days. THese included three evening performances and a matinee to primary schools in the town.

Ken Pritchard, one of the school's

governors, told them: "THanks to you and all of your colleagues and students who put on such a very, very enjoyable first night of this summer's production Popstars.

"I thought that it was first rate. I've seen a lot of the performances over the years and I don't think I've seen a better one. It really was very good indeed."

Four months of rehearsals went into the creating the slickly-directed show.

THe cast worked tirelessly on perfecting their groovy dance moves and wicked

vocals and brought the decade to life to ensure most of those in the audience had plenty to reminisce about with memories of dial-up internet connections, scrunchie hair accessories and fantastic pop songs.

COLLEGE leader Shelagh Legrave has told the House of Lords about the importance of international students to the UK. Shelagh was among the industry leaders invited to speak to politicans.

She is chief executive of the Chichester College Group, which has strong global links, with more than 1,000 students from 50-plus countries who study there every year.

She highlighted to the Lords the students could bring real advantages to the college's other students as well as exposing learners who lived in the area to different cultures and the world beyond their doorsteps.

She said afterwards: "THere are enormous benefits to local students as they study alongside their international classmates.

Her appearance came before the All Party Parliamentary Group for International Students. It was part of an inquiry into the situation faced by international students in the UK.

Surgeon's skills come in handy Chichester Hospital on a patient from Portsmouth in the second phase of an international trial.

THe procedure has been designed to treat those who suffer from arthritis in the thumb. A Cartiva implant is a synthetic cartilage implant which is firm buy slightly compressible and slips easily across the joint surface.

It is inserted into the base of the bone, similar to a rubber at the end of a pencil. THe implant reduces friction between bones caused by the breakdown of cartilage through prolonged arthritis.

Mr Sauve said the implant was an improvement on the previous treatment, called a trapeziectomy, when a small bone was removed from the base of the thumb.

THe implant had been proved to increase grip strength by 150 per cent compared to 15 per cent in the previous treatment.

"Pinch strength is fundamental to many aspects of life, including turning a key and opening a bottle of water. Arthritis Phil Sauve can be very debilitating and painful," he said.

Gold standard is met by young adventurers ADVENTUROUS young people from across West Sussex have struck gold.

THe 99 young people were presented with their gold Duke of Edinburgh awards at a special ceremony.

THe occasion at the Hilton Avisford Park hotel in Walberton was attended by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Caroline Nicholls, and Susan Pyper, the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex.

THe gold award is the highest of the three awards in the scheme.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for

children's services, said afterwards: "I took great pleasure in seeing some of the young people who completed their gold award this year and hearing about their challenges and also how much fun and satisfaction they got out of it.

"THe DofE is a fantastic opportunity of what young people can achieve with a bit of hard work and enthusiasm, and I am very grateful to our council's team who do such a great job delivering the scheme."

THose at the ceremony took between 18 months and two years to complete all five of the required sections of the gold award.

THey spent their free time volunteering, undertook a physical activity, went out on an expedition and learned a new skill.

For the Gold award, participants also had to spend at least five days away with a group to develop their communication and teamwork skills. Some of the award winners travelled to Tanzania to help to improve a school, others worked in South Africa and some joined a project to restore the Wey and Arun Canal.

At the ceremony, Cllr Hillier received the licence to continue to deliver the award for three more years.

How to avoid headaches ruining your way of life SO YOU have just discovered that boxed wine and cheap vodka don’t necessarily mix well, and you’ve got the vicious headache to prove it. Headaches aren’t always party-aftermath related, but they are always a bummer, and they’re also unfortunately very common. It’s estimated that about half of adults worldwide have had a headache in the last year, and 30 per cent of those believed they had suffered a migraine.

Not only is it annoying, but it can also be potentially dangerous. Studies suggest that headache disorders (including migraines) are the third highest cause of disability worldwide due to their significant impact on quality of life and the financial cost of being unable to work. While sometimes the cause is environmental or physiological, you should also consider that diet may play a vital role.

Here are the top foods to avoid or load up on, to ease the pain.

Ah yes, take away the morning coffee and get ready for a pounder. People with the highest intake of caffeine (more than 540 mg per day) were 10 per cent more likely to get headaches and migraines. To avoid the nasty effect, experts recommend limiting your intake to no more than 400-500 mg/ day (about four cups of coffee, which is still pretty generous!), and more importantly, being consistent in your intake. In other words, don’t go on a coffee binge on Saturday morning, only to go cold turkey in the days to follow.

Artificial sweeteners It might not be just the caffeine in your diet fizzy drink that’s giving you a headache.

Artificial sweeteners, particularly the superpopular aspartame, may increase the risk of migraine headaches and reduce the percentage of days subjects were headache free. Apparently, calorie-free doesn’t necessarily mean pain-free, so try cutting back on the bubbly stuff.

Aged cheese Feeling the pressure after a fancy cheese plate? You may not be alone. THe process of fermentation, which is key in the production of cheeses like blue, cheddar, Parmesan, and Camembert, increases the levels of tyramine and phenylethylamine amino acids in food.

Try ricotta, cream cheese, farmer cheese, cottage cheese, or American instead for a lower tyramine option.

Processed meat We hear the word “nitrates” all the time in the context of chronic disease, but it seems they might not be so kind to our heads, either. Common food preservatives found in processed foods like hot dogs, sausage, and cold cuts may be linked to migraines in some populations. It seems that the presence of nitrate, nitrite, and nitric oxide reductase genes related to the composition of gut bacteria is responsible for determining who

suffers and who doesn’t.

Best foods for headaches: Water So it’s not technically a food, but there’s a reason water tastes so good when you’re not feeling your best. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of headaches in general, so it makes sense that getting your eight glasses a day may help. You can also help meet your hydration needs by fitting plenty of fruits and veggies with a high water content into your diet. Cucumbers, spinach, watermelon, and berries can all help quench your thirst and supply a range of important vitamins and minerals to keep headaches at bay.

Low-sodium foods One easy way to cut back? Avoid those processed foods and meats, which are also rich in those potentially problematic nitrates.

Leafy greens Yep, another win for kale. Leafy greens, like kale, spinach, and chard, are loaded with the B vitamin folate, which may play a unique role in the risk of headaches. In addition to being high in folate, leafy greens are an excellent source of magnesium. A low level of this essential mineral may be to blame for headache symptoms, making it even more important to get in your daily dose of greens.

Almonds Migraine sufferers tend to have lower levels of serum magnesium, and almonds are one of the greatest (and tastiest) sources to meet your needs. Try supplementing with 600 mg of magnesium each day to see if it reduces the frequency of migraines. While you may need a supplement, I would suggest trying a foodfirst approach, and if you’re not into almonds, try leafy greens, seafood, pulses, and other nuts and seeds.

If you’re suffering from consistent headaches or migraines, I recommend making a journal and tracking what you eat before a migraine attack to determine which of these foods are hurting (or helping) your pain.

Preventing headaches can also extend beyond what you’re putting on your plate. In addition to switching up your diet, remember to get plenty of regular physical activity, set a consistent sleep schedule, and minimise your stress levels.

LIDL did I know that it could rain this month and actually did rain or that the end of July would herald Lidl's Wine Tour, so off I duly headed in search of good buys.

In terms of white wines, I steered away from the cheaper ones and sought quality at a reasonable price (circa £7 to £8).

For £6.99, I opted initially for a 2017 Les Figuerettes Picpoul de Pinet - an inspired selection - as it turned out to be characterful, pear-scented, sporting tangy lemon freshness with a touch of salinity and a wine that is a great accompaniment to any seafood concoction!

A white Burgundy next caught my eye

in the form of a Maréchal 2015 Côteaux Bourguignons priced at just £6.99 and also serving as a reminder that not all white Burgundy is Chardonnay THis unoaked wine is made from a hundred per cent Aligoté, a grape that has been planted in Burgundy since the eighteenth century.

Green-gold in the glass, herby notes en bouche and crisp acidity characterise this rather splendid white wine considering the pecuniary outlay!

My final white wine choice was that of a 2016 Hans Lang (not Fritz) Rheingau Riesling priced at a lofty £8.99, but undoubtedly my white wine of the week.

THis slick number is classic dryish German Riesling exuding delectable juicy lime fruit on the palate with great balance and a lingering finish - one I wholeheartedly commend to you!

It was now time for a rosé and the 2017 Domaine Saint Pierre Gris Pays D'Oc from the Languedoc region jumped out at me being priced at just £4.99.

Languedoc rosés are up and coming and this medium-dry rosé is salmon pink in colour and has aromas of forest strawberries and is eminently quaffable and one I recommend not to overchill.

In terms of red wines, two in particular stood out with the 2016 Corbières, again from the Languedoc area, being most competitively priced at a mere £4.99 and proving to be decidedly rustic, fruity, bramble-scented with a good dry aftertaste and, in my humble opinion, a veritable crowd pleaser and one to stock up on for parties.

My red wine of the week, however , and

my final selection was a 2014 Squinzano Riserva from Puglia of Italian provenance on sale extraordinarily for just £5.99.

THis enchanting wine has fleshy, dark red fruit, some spice and good grip and

comes from the Negroamaro grape in Southern Italy and tastes sun-baked and would be perfect for barbecues as it pairs well with steak and sausages - one for Italian red wine aficionados. Arrivederci!

Community News & Views WE ARE celebrating 40 years of the Aldingbourne Trust.

THe trust is an enterprising and award-winning charity based in West Sussex that really engages with the people we support, visitors and supporters, enabling people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else.

In 1978, Mavis Miles, Susan Evershed & Paddy Whiteside all had a similar issue - their sons were at Lufton Manor, near Yeovil - a Mencap rural training unit for boys in their last two years of schooling.

With no suitable funding or workplace opportunities available, they made the heroic decision to 'go it alone' despite having no experience of training or horticulture.

At the time, Surrey Health Authority was using Aldingbourne House as a 60-bed holiday home for patients with a learning disability and site had plenty of land. Mavis contacted the authority and it agreed to lease 15 acres of land to the parents for 12 years.

Paddy Whiteside became chairman of the new charity, Aldingbourne Country Centre, and Frank Harfield, who was a member of Chichester Lions, joined to oversee its finances and accounting. With support from Chichester Lions, Mencap, the round table, the Basil Shippam Trust and West Sussex County Council, the Charity was formed.

Planning approval for the centre was granted on October 4, 1978, and on December 4, 1978, manager David Booth and the first five trainees - Robert Miles, Barnaby Evershed, Paul Dunne, Graeme Bradford and Ian Bant took possession of the site under a blanket of snow!

In 1979, Len Dixey, a self-employed builder and then local Mencap treasurer, visited the site to advise on a trench being dug to access mains water from the A27.

During that visit, Len was persuaded to join the team and he stayed until his retirement in 2006.

Sir, My husband and I are very sad to hear that the Richmond Arms in Bognor Regis (Post, July 13) is about to be demolished for housing.

We were licensees of the Richmond Arms, pictured above, in 1984 and have many happy, fond and fun memories of our time there.

THe reason we are writing is about one memory which still makes us laugh today.

We had only been in the Richmond for two weeks when we had a visit from Mr Magee of Arun District Council's health and safety department.

He was holding his business card in his hand, he opened the doors of the bottle and jug bar - and promptly fell through the floor. THe only words he said from his reduced height were YOU'RE SHUT! Before the pub was refurbished, and with a

I can remember doing the washing-up at the sink which overlooks the railway line and all my plates in the rack would move forward and the pictures on the wall in the living room would move slightly as the trains went into Bognor Regis.

It's funny what you remember about the good old days. We are both 76 now, so have plenty of time to reflect.

Sir, I STRONGLY disagree with Cllr R Bower (East Preston) about the housing proposed in Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

THis housing is not even needed, it will not help anyone on the housing list as the cost will be ÂŁ400,000 plus. Of course, we know the developer will say some cheaper housing will be built - but not much as we all know from past projects and this will still be too expensive for local people.

THere is no employment for people if they move into the area.

Also, there is no infrastructure to cope with this influx.

With even more building in Pagham, the increase in vehicles will put 8,000 more vehicles on Chalcraft Lane and the surrounding area. Chalcraft Lane is gridlocked morning and evening now.

Ambulances will not be able to reach patients, fire crews will not get out as they should. It will be chaos.

Cllr G Brown (Aldwick E) says all decisions are made on evidence, not speculation. Well, the evidence is 8,000 more vehicles on the road, 5,000-plus people moving into an area with no real employment, tragic loss of farmland which is needed now more than ever, no infrastructure to cater for this increase in population, and huge amounts of concrete causing more flooding and sewage back up problems which are all well known in the area. THis is the evidence.

THe speculation is the Church Commissioners will make huge sums of money from land sales, that are currently farmland and helping the environment.

Arun District Council will make huge sums in rates - your money which will now pay for the crazy amount spent on getting the housing plans through. THe builders will make money but everyone is entitled to make a living, just not at the expense of the local people and the environment.

THese decisions are being taken by people who do not even live in Bognor and certainly should not be telling us what is needed in Bersted. I think it's time to bring democracy back and give Bognor its own council again with people elected who have a real interest in the area and local environment.

So, when the elections come next year, take care who you vote for. Make sure it's councillors who will put residents' wishes at the top of the list not what government and ADC want. It is also this government pushing the housing, so maybe we need some new MPs as well.

COLLEGES in Chichester and Worthing are to merge.

THe Corporation of Worthing College has selected the Chichester College Group as its preferred merger partner.

THis decision was reached after a robust selection and procurement process. THe merger should be completed by the end of March, 2019.

Paul Amoo, chairman of governors at Worthing College, said: "THis new partnership is excellent news for our college and will enable us to deliver our vision and mission to provide Worthing with an academic college that inspires, builds confidence and prepares students for the life they want to live."

Worthing College principal Paul Riley, pictured above, said: "I believe this merger is in the very best interests of staff, students and the wider community we serve. It will enable us to enhance our existing student support services to provide wrap around pastoral care for all of our students."

Chichester Colleges Group has pledged to maintain a strong academic ethos and integrity, retain a broad and flexible offer of qualifications for students to study A-level/vocational and GCSE retake provision and maintain specialist courses like academies and foundation degrees.

The history of West Dean and Binderton houses

By Pat Saunders, volunteer, and Portia Tremlett, museum assistant at the Novium Museum ON THE outskirts of Chichester are two small and unassuming villages by the name of Binderton and West Dean, notable for their rural beauty, but also two beautiful country houses that have been the subject of visits from both royalty and infamous artists and sculptors.

THe village of West Dean, sometimes spelt Dene, has existed since the Saxon period, and was originally part of the Hundred of Selsey.

THe Domesday Book shows it was held by King Edward but was later given to the Dukes of Norfolk after the Norman Conquest. It was later confiscated in 1572 by Elizabeth 1st when she had the Duke of Norfolk executed for treason. However, she returned the estate to his son, Philip, who then sold it. In 1622, owner John Lewkenor built a house on the estate.

THe estate passed through several owners until it was acquired by Sir James Peachey, the 1st Lord Selsey. He commissioned James Wyatt, leading architect, to rebuild the house creating the core flint mansion seen today.

In 1891, it became the home of William Dodge James, an American rail road magnate who had moved to England. Records from 1896 show that Edward VII, Prince of Wales, visited West Dean house to go shooting. In 1889 William Dodge James married Evelyn Elizabeth Forbes, and in 1907 their only son, Edward, was born. Both William (died 1912) and Evelyn (died 1929) are buried in

the churchyard. Edward was four when he inherited West Dean house and its 8,000 acre estate but didn’t start to manage it himself until he was 25. He was educated at Eton, before attending Christ Church Oxford, where he was a contemporary of the writer, Evelyn Waugh. Edward was always interested in the arts and was friends with many artists, in particular Salvador Dali.

In the 1930s alterations were carried out to Monkton House, which was within the estate, and had been built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1912. THe alterations were carried out by Kit Nicholson and Hugh Casson, with Salvador Dali’s help.

THe house in the post war years was leased out to private tenants and between 1956 and 1968 it was used as an independent boarding school. THe Edward James Foundation, the charity that runs the house gardens and West Dean College, was set up in 1964.

Edward James died in 1984 and is buried in St Roche’s Arboretum beneath a slab of Cumbrian slate inscribed by Sussex sculptor John Skelton with the simple epitaph “Edward James Poet 1907-1984”. West Dean house became a Grade II listed building in 1984.

Situated on the road from Chichester to Midhurst is Binderton, best described now as a small hamlet. It is most notable for Binderton House.

held by Earl Godwin and his wife, Countess Gytha. Following the Norman Conquest, Gytha travelled to the Isle of Flatholme (in the Bristol Channel) where she lived awhile before moving across the sea to St Omer in Flanders.

Binderton survived as a village community until 1641 but later became largely deserted.

THe Medieval church which stood in this area was demolished by THomas Smyth between 1660 and 1670, when he had Binderton House built. A small chapel was built at this time, but was never consecrated In the mid-20th century, a notable owner of Binderton house was Anthony Eden (18971977) who served as foreign secretary from 1935 to 1938, and again in 1940 to 1945 when he became deputy prime minister. As foreign secretary, his rural retreat from the stresses of his position had been Binderton House which he’d affectionately referred to as “Old Binders”.

In the war years, one notable visitor to the house was Rex John Whistler (1905-44), the artist celebrated for his murals. He was often invited to large houses such as Binderton to paint for the owners. THe last painting in England that he made is believed to be of Binderton House in July, 1944.

Binderton House has subsequently been divided up into a group of smaller residences.

The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship aims to help retired civil servants through friendship and support to enjoy a better and more fulfilling retirement. Fundraiser – The Phoenix Snak Shak Ltd

The Phoenix Snak Shak was set up for the benefit of the young people in the Manhood peninsula area; especially, but not exclusively, in contact with existing youth provisions so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved. It is not a youth club with organised activities, but somewhere more casual for young people to meet with their friends. Costprice food and drinks and free cakes are available and it is open Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 9:30pm. Someone is needed to help raise funds to keep the Snak Shak running. This will involve some computer skills to complete applications for grants. Only a few hours per week should be necessary in order to bring in the money required. Some training can be arranged.

Slumping Priory Park need a win PostSport as relegation fears start to grow CHICHESTER Priory Park are out to break the slump as they look to secure their Sussex Division Two status for another year.

Matthew Geffen's side started life back in the county's second tier promisingly, with the side looking up rather than down.

But a poor run of just one win in five has seen Chi drop down the table. And, with just five games to go, Priory now are just a couple of defeats away from slipping into the relegation zone.

Next for Chi is a trip to Haywards Heath tomorrow (12.30pm) to play a side who are third but who have been on just as poor a run as Geffen's XI. Priory will need to be better than last weekend when they could not match league leaders Mayfield.

After winning the toss at Goodwood and choosing to field, Chi's bowlers were unable to make inroads, held up by an excellent third wicket partnership by Robert Sharma (50) and Harry Lloyd (98*). THe visitors eventually reached 200 for eight before declaring.

In reply, only Will Futcher (60) stood up to the Mayfield bowlers as Priory were bowled out for 136 to chalk up a 64 run loss.

Fellow Division Two side Bognor Regis sit one place below Chichester in the tenteam division after a four-wicket win over relegation-threatened Ansty.

Two wickets each for Marquino Mindley, Josh Sargeant, Joel Baker and Scott Bingham restricted the home side to 195 for 8.

In reply, Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell led from the front, hitting an excellent unbeaten century (126*) to guide Regis home with plenty to spare.

Next up for Bognor is a home match against second-placed THree Bridges (12.30pm), who have not lost in five.

In Division THree West, Pagham will continue their outside shot at promotion on the road when they play to second-bottom Slinfold (12.30pm).

THe Nyetimber Lane side are now second and within touching distance of leaders Goring after a comfortable six wicket victory over Findon. An excellent bowling display from Gareth Davies (5-28) and Rico Webb (439) restricted the visitors to 138.

Pagham then passed the target with plenty to spare as Jack Stannard (30), Justin Scott (24*) and Ryan Barratt (39*) contributed.

DARTS: Micky Rowland was in inspired form throwing just 32 darts as he helped fire Friary Z to a comfortable victory over Friary D in Division One of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

Rowland's performance, which included a 180, earned him a 31 dart average and was the standout performance of week 11.

With two matches of the season to go, Friary Z have wrapped up the Division One title, sitting more than 30 legs clear at the top.

THe race for the Division Two title is a lot closer with BRSA Ravens and Aldwick Legion being separated by just one leg.

With Royal Oak a further six behind, the race is set to go down to the line.

In Division THree, it is QE2 Devils' crown to lose as they sit 13 points in front of their nearest challengers Newtown Clubbers.

MIDDLETON CC will look to capitalise on their best performance of the season as they continue to put breathing space between themselves and the Sussex Premier Division drop-zone.

Sean Heather's side welcome Preston Nomads to Sea Lane tomorrow (12pm) looking to extend their unbeaten run to four.

THat good stretch has come at exactly the right time for Middleton, with two wins and a draw in the past three weeks lifting them up to seventh in the ten team league.

With more than 50 points between Heather's side and the drop-zone, and just five games left of the season, one further win should be enough to seal Middleton's place in the top league in Sussex for another year.

THe Sea Lane spectators were treated to the best performance of the campaign last weekend when league leaders Brighton & Hove suffered just their third defeat of the season.

Middleton's 24-run victory was no mean feat considering the visitors' side featured two Sussex CC players in Luke Wells and Matt

Machan.

But, after winning the toss and electing to bat, Heather's side produced a composed performance to put a good score on the board.

Josh Wood (21) and Matthew Reynolds (60) set the platform at the top of the innings before Reynolds and overseas player Mahesh Rawat (53) put on 85 for the second wicket.

Patrick Colvin then injected some real momentum into the innings, smashing 60 off 54 balls to push Middleton over the 200 mark.

After losing a number of wickets as the looked to push on, Heather's side eventually declared on 230 for 8, giving themselves a good target to defend.

With the ball, the Middleton attack clearly had their tails up.

Wells was dismissed early for just six, as Heather took the first of five catches off the bowling of Craig Terry. Craig Fowle (4-69) and Josh Wood (4-20) then shared the remaining wickets as Middleton wrapped up a memorable win.

RUGBY: Chichester RFC are looking to build on the success of England star Jess Breach and start a ladies team.

THe 20-year-old from Chichester has been a real hit with the Twickenham setup, scoring six tries on her international debut.

With more and more women interested in playing the game competitively, the Oaklands Park side are now looking for coaches and players to come forward to form a team.

Lions boss warns fight for top two will be as tough as ever

Tennis finals day a big hit BOGNOR Lawn Tennis Club served up a day of fierce friendly competition for the annual finals day.

THe ladies singles started the matches with newcomer to the club Pippa Holliday playing against Stella Smith.

Pippa won the first five games, giving her a strong and early lead, winning the first set.

However, Stella fought back to win the second set and took an initial lead in the third.

Pippa came back strongly and won the match 6-1 2-6 6 -3 THe men's singles was a father/son match and a repeat of last year’s final with six time winner Oli Callingham taking on father Robert.

It was a fast moving match with hard-hitting strokes by both players but Oli’s superior striking of the ball won through, taking his seventh crown with a 6-1 6-2 win.

THe ladies doubles was a very competitive match between Jean Muglestone and Maree Loversidge against Stella Smith and Patti Francis-Kerr.

Jean and Maree raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set but Stella and Patti clawed it back to 3-3, despite Stella having played a three set singles match just 30 minutes previously.

THe set continued to and fro before Jean and Maree took it 7-5. THe second set was similarly competitive but once again Jean and Maree took it 6-4, giving them the match too.

Rick West and Cyril Penn took on Keith Savage and Neil O’Boyle in the men’s doubles.

THe former were quick to dominate and won the first set 6-2. THe game continued much the same into the second set with a repeated score of the first, making West and Penn the winners, 6-2 6-2.

THe draw for partners' final this year threw up an all mens’ match with Malcolm Ridley and Robin Tyler taking on Barney Ragless and Paul Woodwood, with the former winning the match 7-5 6-1.

In the veterans match, Jean Muglestone took to the court again with her partner Paul May and were too good for Carol Jones and Neil O’Boyle.

THe last match of the day was a closely contested mixed doubles between husband and wife Rick and Louise West and Patti Francis-Kerr and Gary Leadston. In a match that could have gone either way, both sets went to 5-5 before Patti and Gary pulled away to seal a 7-5 7-5 win.

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds believes competition will be as fierce as ever as the Lions kick off their SCFL Premier campaign tomorrow.

A trip to Peacehaven & Telscombe (3pm) is first up for the Nyetimber Lane side as they look to go one better than the third place finish last time out.

Pagham will then make their home bow just a few days later when they welcome Lancing to the Lane on Tuesday (7.30pm).

With the top two going up into the Bostik South, the Lions know competition for those spots will tough.

Simmonds, who will be in the dug out with Richie Hellen for the second year, said: "Chichester will be a good side and Saltdean are putting together a good team, plus there is normally a surprise package such as one of those who have come into the league, so I think it will be as tight as ever at the top."

Pagham finished their pre-season preparations with a feisty 2-1 loss to Wessex Premier side Hamble last weekend.

THat was followed by a spirited showing against Bostik Premier Whitehawk on Tuesday, which resulted in a 4-3 loss.

City host Dockers for opener

CHICHESTER City will face-off against old rivals Newhaven when they kick-off their SCFL Premier season tomorrow.

Miles Rutherford's side welcome the Dockers to Oaklands Park (3pm) knowing that the two sides have a plenty of shared history in recent years.

Cup finals and potential league deciders have been played out between Chi and Newhaven with goals a plenty normally a feature of previous fixtures.

And Rutherford knows that, if his side are to achieve their goal of promotion, they need to

get off to a strong start.

Chi will then follow up the Newhaven match with a trip to Hassocks on Tuesday (7.45pm), a team that flirted with relegation last year.

Rutherford’s side rounded off their preseason fixtures with a 4-1 victory at home to Wessex Division One side Christchurch last weekend to lift the Steve Barnard Memorial Trophy for the third year running.

THat was followed by a 3-1 win against Woking under-23s on Tuesday night.

Dolcetti has signed on for another year, combining playing with first team coaching.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey start their season with a home match against Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

It's been a summer of change at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium with Daren Pearce coming in as manager.

A number of new additions have been made to the first team squad as Selsey turn to youth in their bid to improve on last season's ninth place finish.

Southwick finished bottom of the league last year and had to receive a reprieve to stay in the division - but Pearce will warn his side against complacency and hope Selsey can match last season's fast start which saw them win their first five matches.

THe Blues finished their pre-season with a resounding 9-0 win against SCFL Division Two side Bosham. Hat-tricks from Harry Gregory, Callum Dowdell and Ryan Morey secured the victory.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham finished their pre-season with a 2-2 draw against Rustington.

THe Sids will play their first competitive match under Steve Bailey with a home match against Mile Oak (3pm).

It will be the first time in three seasons that Sids have played at Division One level and retaining their league position will be the obvious aim for the new manager.

Oxford first up for Smith's Chi Ladies CHICHESTER City Ladies will face some old foes and some new faces when they get their FA Women's National League South underway in a fortnight's time.

Five new faces enter the foray into the newly-renamed third tier of women's football - and Chi will meet four of them within the opening six matches.

Oxford United are first up at Oaklands Park when the season starts on Sunday, August 19 (2pm). Chi will then head to newly promoted Plymouth Argyle and Milton Keynes Dons for the first away tests for Aaron Smith's side.

Two midweek fixtures sit within the lineup against fellow south coasters Portsmouth FC Women on September 12 (home) and February 13 (away). Coventry United will

come to Oaklands in the first six league fixtures, before Chi head to recentlypromoted Loughborough Foxes.

THe season is expected to end on Sunday, May 5, with a trip to Gillingham Ladies and the final home game of the season in April will be against Watford FC Ladies.

Chi continue their pre-season preparations when they head to FA Women's Championship side Lewes Ladies tomorrow (2pm).

Smith's side head to THe Dripping Pan off the back of a good test last weekend when they beat Bournemouth Ladies 4-2 at Oaklands.

THe club has also teamed up Univeristy of Chichester for a classroom session this week which manager Smith said outlined "what it means to be part of this club".

Pearce still searching for final few pieces of the Rocks squad Next Game

GOSPORT BORO (A) Today, 7.45pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging for patience from the fans this year as he puts the final pieces together of one of the youngest Rocks squads in recent memory.

As the Nyewood Lane side play their last pre-season match tonight away at Gosport Borough (7.45pm), the experienced manager says he's still got a few places to fill.

After a disappointing relegation campaign last year where a lack of goals was the biggest problem, Rocks fans will be hoping a return to Bostik Premier can deliver more victories than losses over the next nine months.

But, a week before the season kicks off away at Haringey Borough (Aug 11, 3pm), Pearce is keen to cool down any talk that life in the third tier of non-league football will be a breeze.

Instead, he called for patience, adding it would be a few weeks yet until he had pieced together a settled squad.

THe Bognor boss said: "I think we're moving in the right direction, which is good.

"THe squad is getting stronger but, at Bognor, we have always had to understand that we are not the priority on everyone's list.

"We have to wait for people playing further away to start looking for alternatives. We have always been a club that has to wait for the last few places to fill."

Among the positions that Pearce is looking to fill are left back, central defence and an experienced central midfielder.

Pearce said the latter would help complement 'four or five excellent young players' that we have.

Included within this is Marley Ridge, who has joined from Havant & Waterlooville on loan and has looked composed when starting a number of pre-season fixtures.

Rocks fans who headed to Salisbury last Friday also got their first glimpse of Portsmouth loan duo Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge. THe pair played well in what turned out to be a 1-0 victory for the Rocks, sealed by a first half Calvin Davies strike.

On the new signings, Pearce said: "THey have all done well, all seem to be enjoying it.

"THe whole team did quite well at Salisbury especially in the first half, but it's early days.

"Like anything, when putting a squad together there will be highs and lows.

"It is one of the youngest teams that I put together at this level. But I will always believe that the type of club we are, the location we are in, we can only go for young hungry players who have something to prove."

And as for a target for the season ahead?

Pearce said: "THere are always going to be certain players who'll be more influential than others. If we can keep them fit and free from suspension then we can beat anyone in the league. But youth does deliver inconsistency."

On where they could finish, he added: "I don't want to be fighting a relegation battle."

Pressure on Pompey loan duo "YOU WON'T win anything with kids".

It's more than 20 years since former Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen made his infamous 'shocking' prediction about Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United team.

A few months later, the Reds side including the Neville brothers, Paul Scholes and David Beckham strolled to the Premier League title.

Rocks fans, of course, are not new to the idea that players who are good enough are old enough. Jack Pearce has long advocated bringing young players into the club for a couple of seasons before they move on.

THe latest cohort is headed by 17-year-old Brad Lethbridge and 18-year-old Dan Smith, both of whom have joined on season-long loans from League One Portsmouth.

Word from inside the Rocks camp is that both have settled in well, despite not meeting their new mates until just before Friday night's match against Salisbury.

Judging by that game, both will be integral to how Bognor attack this year, with goals being an key target.

Regardless of how well they are regarded in Pompey's academy, men's football is different.

But if they can deal with the pressure, then it will undoubtedly be to Bognor's benefit.

HELLO and welcome to my first fortnightly column for the Post, which I'll be writing for the season.

THis year will be my sixth with the Rocks. I came here on loan from Havant and really enjoyed it.

After I returned to Havant, I spoke to the manager Lee Bradbury, who spoke to Jack and managed to sort out a move. I've been happy with how it's all worked out.

THis year it looks like I will be captain too.

It's not something which is done officially. Unless there's been an outstanding candidate like Robbo then usually it just goes to the person who has been there the longest.

I think the reason why I have been at the club so long is down to the people here and the way they play football.

As long as Jack is involved in the club, then Bognor will never play the long ball game.

You just have to see that with the way we played under Dabba and Jamie - they all wanted to play football and now we're continuing.

It has been a summer of change with Robbie Blake coming in as first team coach.

I have always said that I will respect people in terms of where they have been and what they've achieved.

It's difficult not to listen to someone who has played at the top levels of English football, Given his track record, you have to listen to him.

He is very laid back and a very likeable character. When you like someone, then you tend to play well for them.

His training has, to be honest, been unreal - it has been some of the best sessions I've ever had. It's competitive and at a high tempo and everyone is enjoying it.

I think speaking generally things are coming together.

We have lost a few players which is always a bit worrying.

But as a club we always do lose a few as Bognor is not able to

match the money demands that other clubs have.

In terms of what we have brought in, they have been good. We need to get a few more in, though, and once we do that I think we will be there.

Everyone is fit, we have Chad coming back from injury and everyone is looking forward to it.

THe latest two additions were Brad Lethbridge and Dan Smith on loan from Portsmouth.

I only spoke to them for the first time on Friday at Salisbury but they are doing really well.

THey may only be young at 17 and 19 but they don't look like it. THey are ready for men's football which we will need at this level where many of the teams are quite physical.

I think the performance last week at Salisbury wasn't too bad. We did struggle in the second half, though, which shows that we have a lot of things we still need to work on.

With Doug and Harvey out, it also showed that we probably need a couple of extra faces, perhaps up front and out wide.

It's always a waiting game at this stage of the year, however, so it may not be until the start of the season before we can lure them from elsewhere.

Jack has made it clear he wants to get back up to where we were last year.

But looking around at what other teams in the league have done, it will not be that easy In the season we did go up we had a good group of people.

THe team spirit was the best we have had, so if we can get back to that then I do not think we will be that far off.

For myself, I will just try and play as well as I can each week and stay out of trouble.

I have my own personal standards which I like to meet and I know when I have a bad game. As long as each week I can give my best and try and stay fit then that will be a good season.
