Post, West Sussex councillor Jamie Fitzjohn told members of Chichester City Council that a legal battle was taking place between West Sussex Highways and the developers of Unicorn House.

It is argued the crossing, moved when planning permission was granted for a convenience store in Unicorn House, is no longer required after Sainsbury's pulled out of the site.

Despite West Sussex County Council

Highways agreeing to put the lights back after Thai restaurant, Giggling Squid, took over the premises, a spokesperson has now said: "The county council has carried out an internal review of planning conditions relating to safety at the pedestrian crossing on The Hornet, Chichester.

"To be sure public money is spent wisely, we concluded that we would not consider relocating this crossing until

the council has a better understanding of the likely, long-term use of Unicorn House. This is in line with the original planning consent that was granted.”

At last week's Chichester City Council meeting, Cllr Fitzjohn told councillors that Market Avenue was one of the busiest traffic lights pedestrian crossings in the whole of West Sussex.

Work on new car park is set to start kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ROLLS-ROYCE Motor Cars has announced that construction of its new car park is now underway.

As reported in the Chichester Post in March, planning permission was granted to the car manufacturer giant for 492 spaces at the site in Westhampnett as well as a self-contained 40-space car park for The March Church of England Primary School.

The district’s largest employer is building the new gated parking area on land next to the manufacturing plant and head office.

The development includes a dedicated car park for The March CE Primary School, located close to the entrance of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, including a ‘kiss and drop-off area’ and 40 parking spaces.

The school car park incorporates a new road crossing, also funded by RollsRoyce Motor Cars in the absence of local authority funding.

The development has received overwhelming support from local residents, Chichester District Council and Chichester MP, Gillian Keegan.

Parking outside the primary school – like most local schools – has been problematical for many years. The design of the new Rolls-Royce new car park has incorporated a dedicated area for the school from the outset, and the company has worked closely with the headteacher, parents and governors to incorporate specific requirements.

Highways England had shown concern over the impact on the A27, arguing that additional trips from Bognor Regis would

affect the A27 Bognor Road roundabout and A27 Portfield roundabout.

The additional trips are as a result of the withdrawal of the shuttle bus from the Bognor Regis site.

Speaking at Chichester District Council's planning committee meeting in March, Cllr Mike Hall supported the application, saying he was hopeful it would resolve parking issues in nearby roads.

He said: "Ever since Rolls-Royce have been there, they have been very good neighbours. One of the biggest problems is the fact that vehicles park in Stane Street on both sides of the road and also up Claypit Lane.

"The other point is the car park dedicated to the school itself. Formerly, we have had problems with parents pulling up on the pavement and the cycle path and children have opened their doors onto incoming traffic. This will address that problem."

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “We are delighted that development of our new car park is now formally underway.

"The success of the company, and the resulting increase in numbers of skilled men and women working at the home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, has resulted in the need for additional parking as an integral part of our extended travel plan.

"We have taken the opportunity to incorporate a dedicated car park for our local school, but this was not a planning condition – it was our own initiative – and demonstrates our desire to promote child safety and also to be a good neighbour and member of the local community.”

The development is due to be completed by the end of this year.

POLICE have released CCTV images of three men sought in connection with a burglary in Chichester.

A green Maxi Micro scooter was stolen from a garden shed in Priory Lane in the early hours of Saturday, May 26.

It had a green light and a bell on it, and is valued at £120.

Anyone who recognises either of the men pictured, or anyone with any information about the incident, is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 1326 of 26/05.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CUSTOMERS to a popular garden centre have helped to raise over £1,000 for St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Brick Kiln Garden Centre, in Bognor Road, regularly holds free music events for its visitors to enjoy.

The garden centre stages live stage events twice a month with folk and jazz every second Tuesday of the month and every last Tuesday of the month.

Hannah Presgrave, community fundraising officer at St Wilfrid's Hospice, who accepted the cheque, said: "The amazing money raised will help with

providing care for the 14 inpatients and the 265 outpatients. The £1043.91 is the equivalent of providing two weeks' worth of travel costs for the community nurses, as well as many more vital services."

The cheque was presented during Tuesday's free event featuring folk singer Jez Lowe, who brought in the crowds and filled out the garden centre's cafe.

Jez had performed at Monday evening's folk club at the Chichester Inn pub in West Street said: "It's my first time here at Brick Kiln and it's a really nice venue.

It's a fair size, too, with a lot more people than I was expecting.

"It's great to have a charity in the background of entertainment. It's good for both the performers and the

audiences."

Event organiser, Lorrayne Mendes, said: "Our folk events have had an absolutely exceptional response from our customers. Jez Lowe put up a great performance which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. It was lovely to see our regulars and some new faces here on Tuesday.

"We have top national and international musicians performing here in the café so we’re excited to be establishing ourselves as a regular folk and jazz venue. Having St Wilfrid's here with us on Tuesday was really special to us as our customers have been consistently generous with their donations. Keep an eye on our website for all of our event updates too, we will soon be launching our tea dances!"

He said: "What this means is, that every 30 seconds out of a minute, the lights going across Unicorn House are red, which means you can't turn into St Pancras Road.

"This is causing major problems with congestion and concern for all the companies down there. If it had been moved slightly to the east, then it would have had to synchronise.

"West Sussex County Council Highways have agreed to put it back.

However, the developer paid for it as part of the planning permission.

He has now threatened to take West Sussex County Council Highways to court for liability if they try and move it back."

David Thompson, from Birdham, said: "I drive around the area and I think the traffic lights moving has been very disruptive to traffic.

"You cannot turn right to St Pancras because the traffic lights go right across both roads now. It's absolutely extraordinary that the developer should say because they paid for it, it's OK!" Shops and businesses in the area have noticed the impact, including the pub, The Eastgate. Landlady, Emma Allen, said: "It is a lot harder for taxis to stop outside now, and our dray.

"I think the knock-on effect of the change in the lights has caused a lot of chaos. I'm not sure if there was much thought into it."

Lisa ware, sewing machinist at Cloth Kits, said: "The trouble is they don't go red at the same time, there is a delay between the sides and people are not sure when they can cross. It is an accident waiting to happen.

"The move has caused traffic to back up and it's causing a lot of confusion. I do think the road is a lot busier than a few years ago though."

CMW Motorcycles Ltd owner Richard Morgan said: "It's absolutely terrible. How can anyone have agreed to this idea? How it got through I don't know, it's ridiculous.

"Our council have done all they can to destroy Chichester. Anyone who wants to go around anti-clockwise to St Pancras have to wait.

"I'm not surprised that Sainsbury's backed out, and I'm not sure we needed a store there anyway, it wouldn't have done Chichester any good."

Cllr Fitzjohn told the Chichester Post on Wednesday: "I am holding a meeting with the WSCC executive of transport and the cabinet member for transport on July 10, to discuss this issue and requesting that the lights be relocated."

Sweeping across the landscape with sails

Work to restore the West Sussex landmark is nearing completion after its four 15ft sails were hoisted into position this week.

The sails – known locally as sweeps, were put back in their rightful place on Halnaker Windmill to return the Grade II listed building to its former glory.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “This historic monument is much loved by residents across West Sussex and we know people have been patiently waiting for the windmill to be returned to its original state.

“A lot of hard work and effort has gone into the restoration of the windmill and this could not have been achieved without the dedicated work of council staff and local contractors.

“With the whole building being brought back from the brink over the past five years, I cannot wait for new generations to enjoy Halnaker Windmill as so many have done before.”

Work has been ongoing at the site since 2013, when the windmill was fenced off for safety reasons and a number of other issues with the building were discovered.

In 2017, phase one of the restoration came to a close when the tile hung façade (consisting of approximately 14,000 hand-crafted tiles) was completed

by Fowler Building Contractors, from Cowfold, and supported by a consultant from Brodie Plant Goddard, based in Dorking.

The next stage of development, if planning approval is gained, is to install a door and metal fencing around the building.

The council has been working with local business RB Construction Group Ltd, in Burgess Hill, to restore and reinstate the sweeps.

Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “I am delighted that we have finally been able to re-fit the sails to the recently restored Halnaker Windmill. This iconic Sussex landmark can once again be seen for miles around in its full glory.

“This is a project I have championed for a number of years and I would like to thank our team at West Sussex County Council, as well as all the contractors involved in the restoration, who have worked so hard to bring this project to fruition.

“There are still some finishing touches, such as some railings to be completed, but the windmill can once again take pride of place, situated high on the South Downs.”

Brave Owen cuts the ribbon to officially open new opticians A NEW ‘Vision Express at Tesco’ store has officially opened its doors with a celebration led by a local child who battled a rare and aggressive eye cancer when he was just ten months old.

As an ambassador for the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) – a Vision Express charity partner – Owen Bishop, now aged eight, was on hand along with his mum, Katy, to perform an official ribbon cutting at the new Fishbourne Road East premises.

In 2009, Owen was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in both eyes. He had displayed the main symptoms of the rare cancer – a white glow in his eyes

and a squint – along with persistent nystagmus, a condition of repetitive and involuntary eye movement.

Doctors failed to recognise the signs and gave him glasses.

His mother, Katy, said: “If I could have swapped places with Owen, I would have in a heartbeat.

"Despite all that he has been through, and with reduced vision and hearing – a result of the chemo – Owen has managed to overcome his obstacles and has previously been given a CHECT Champion Award in honour of the courage and bravery he has shown."

A huge turnout for festival dedicated to all things Thai

Hundreds of people turned out at Oakland's Park on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy a weekend of Thai music, dancing and food.

Simon Haslett, from Chichester, attended on Saturday with his sister and her husband. He said: "I had a curry which was really good. I went to a Thai festival in Woking once which was great and had a bit more going on."

Edible treats included Thai ice cream, curries and noodle dishes. There was a large queue for the Thai stir-fry ice cream, which is a specially made desert made to order.

A few pieces of fruit, and any other flavours required, are placed in an ice cold pan. A portion of milk is then poured over and freezes on impact. The chef then chops and rolls the mixture to form the ice-cream.

Mandy Robson, from Chichester, had ordered a portion and said: "It's absolutely delicious! I went for choc chip and mint. When I first read the sign I assumed it was stir-fry noodles and a curry flavoured ice-cream so I was pleasantly surprised."

` Police report a high number of car break-ins in area POLICE have reported several car break-ins from the week commencing Monday, June 11.

On Monday, June 11, police received a report that two vehicles had been broken into and cash stolen from Osborne Crescent, in Chichester – Serial 0345 11/6.

The same day, between 10.30am and 11.25am, a vehicle was broken into via smashed windows at Goodwood Racecourse. No entry was gained. Serial 0576 11/6 At around 3pm, at Eartham Woods, a vehicle was broken into via a smashed rear window.

Nothing was stolen. Serial 0958 11/6 The following day, in Chidham Lane, Chichester, at around 8am, a vehicle was broken into via a smashed window. No entry was gained and nothing was stolen.

Serial 0285 12/6.

Overnight, between Wednesday, June 13, and Thursday, June 14, in Gifford Road, Bosham, a vehicle was broken into and money stolen.

Serial 0388 14/6.

In Arnold Way, Bosham, another vehicle was broken into at the same time but nothing was stolen. Serial 0760 17/6.

On Friday, June 15, a vehicle at The Trundle, Goodwood, was broken into via a smashed window.

Nothing was stolen. Serial 0940 15/6. In Cambria Close, Bosham, the following day, a vehicle was broken into and a rucksack stolen.

Maylene Davis, originally from the Philippines, had travelled to the festival from Emsworth and had a massage. She said: "It was really lovely. This is exactly what I need, a deep-tissue massage to relieve the tension in my back."

Friends, Tina Smith from Waterlooville, and Anita Wright, from Hayling Island, visited with their children.

Tina said: "We came here because we just love Thai food! We ordered the pad Thai, papaya salad, BBQ pork, satay chicken and Thai milk tea. It's all really delicious."

Anita added: "We are closer to Portsmouth so we have been to the Thai festival there for a few years but we saw this one advertised and thought we'd come along."

Derek gets his wish granted

Derek Pullen, 89, a resident at Colten Care’s Wellington Grange in Chichester, visited the home of Brighton & Hove Albion, nicknamed the Seagulls.

His wish was granted when he enjoyed a full, stadium tour of his favourite football club.

Derek first became a fan of the club at the age of 26 when he attended a game at their original Goldstone ground.

He went on to support the club through the good times and the bad and was among the record-breaking 36,747 supporters who saw Brighton lose to Fulham on Boxing Day in 1958.

The Seagulls enjoyed greatest prominence between 1979 and 1983 when they played in the First Division and reached the 1983 FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester United after a replay.

But the highlight for Derek and the

club’s other fans came when Brighton made their Premier League debut in the 2017–18 season after sealing promotion from the EFL Championship.

Derek visited the club’s most recent home, the impressive American Express Community Stadium, known as the Amex.

He enjoyed a tour of the West stand, including the Amex box, the directors lounge, trophy room, and changing rooms.

And he even got to walk out onto the pitch to the sound of ‘Sussex by the Sea’, just as the players do on match days.

Emily Hudson, companionship team leader at Wellington Grange, accompanied Derek.

She said: “We love to celebrate our residents’ passions and make their wishes come true.

"So when Derek said he would love to visit the ground, we jumped at the chance to make it happen.”

Derek said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. Simply amazing.

“I didn’t expect to see so much. It’s been a truly wonderful experience.”

A CELEBRATION OF FOLK MUSIC, FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT!

OVER 50 players took on the Macmillan ‘Longest Day Challenge’ at Goodwood, with an incredible £13,481 raised for the charity so far.

There were 14 teams who took on the challenge on Thursday, June 14, with each individual walking around 60,000 steps and covering approximately 22 miles around the park course.

Throughout the course of the event, which began with a shotgun start at 5.30am, some 4,032 holes were played on a day when the weather changed from wet and foggy in the morning to bright and breezy in the afternoon.

A global initiative, the Macmillan Longest Day Challenge invites golfers to play four full rounds in a single day and is so-called because it usually takes place on the longest day of the year. However, players at Goodwood had the disadvantage of playing ahead of the summer solstice and with less daylight available.

Despite this, play was still hugely competitive and the top two teams were separated by only six points at the end of the day. The win was awarded to the Decent Gallagher Golfers, who amassed 402 points.

` Recruitment event for jobs in care A SPECIAL recruitment event arranged by West Sussex County Council is taking place in Chichester to encourage more people to think about working in care and the potential career opportunities.

People will have the opportunity to meet care providers, find out about the roles available and even apply for jobs.

Part of a vital ongoing campaign to recruit more care workers across West Sussex, the event will take place on Tuesday, July 17, from 2pm to 4.30pm at Chichester Park Hotel, Madgwick Lane, Westhampnett Road, Chichester, PO19 7QL. Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Working in care can offer an incredibly rewarding career with so many opportunities to progress and make a real, positive difference to people’s lives.

"I would recommend anyone interested to come along to this event and find out about local opportunities and job vacancies.”

Terry Franks, who has spent nearly five years in the care sector following a 23 year career in the police force, said: “I know that what I do makes a difference to people’s everyday lives.

Motorbike shop owner sees a new parking improvement

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A MOTORBIKE shop owner in the Hornet, Chichester, has revealed how the council sent an email to a neighbouring shop confirming the removal of bikes from outside his shop.

Mr Richard Morgan, from CMW Motorcycles Ltd, received a printed copy of an email, pictured right, between Andy Ekinsmyth, head of transport at West Sussex County Council, to Nick Carpenter, owner of Male Concept mens hairdresser in the Hornet.

The email was passed to Richard from a neighbouring shop who claimed the email had been posted through letterboxes of businesses in the area.

The Hornet has a bay for 30 minutes' parking running the length of the street on one side.

Speaking at Chichester City Council's meeting on Wednesday, June 20, Cllr Jamie Fitzjohn, from West Sussex County Council, said: "At 5.29pm on Friday, June 15, an email went out from a highways officer. It should not have gone out. It was poorly written, it was poorly managed and he has sincerely apologised to me because on the Saturday morning while I was in London, I had a barrage of telephone calls asking me why the county council is banning motorcycles in the Hornet.

"We are not banning motorcycles in

the Hornet. Unfortunately, his email stopped with the words 'motorcycles will be removed' and he didn't finish the rest of the sentence as it went out.

"I have actually spoken to the owners of the motorcycle shop numerous times and gone back to Highways and negotiated the traffic regulation order that they are looking at doing.

"The current situation is that cars can park in the bays along The Hornet for 30 minutes and then they have to return and move the vehicle. Motorbikes are exempt. As part of council policy, we are actually extending that time from 30 minutes to an hour but including motorcycles.

"What I have done, is negotiate that outside the shop there will be a parking bay for motorcycles exempt from penalty charges because we do not want to cripple their business.

"As I presented this to the owners, their exact words were: 'Wow, thank you, that’s more than what we could have asked for' so they are extremely pleased. There are 50,000 Facebook comments at this moment in time and some motorcyclists may be protesting but a number of them are going back and saying: 'hold on a second, this has now been resolved'."

Mr Morgan said: "We have never had a problem with the parking. We didn't even know, until this all came about, that motorbikes are actually exempt from the 30 minutes anyway. Even though, we had been moving our bikes to comply

with the 30 minute limits."

"The warden's here have harassed us. It is absolutely incredible what the council have done about this. It was a completely underhanded method by them.

"We wouldn't have known about this, unless one of our neighbours had shown us this email."

Cllr Peter Evans said: "As a keen motorcyclist I’d like to thank Cllr Fitzjohn for the work he has done for getting legitimate parking there.

"It’s a good thing because you can go and visit that shop and there is no where else to park in the area at the

moment for bikes and so this will make it better for them as retailers and us as motorcyclists in the area."

SINCE February, 2016, all private landlords in England have had to check their prospective tenants' right to live in the UK. The pilot scheme prior to this was responsible for finding 109 individuals living in the UK illegally. A landlord’s failure to undertake these checks is now a criminal offence that can lead to five years' imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

The severity of the punishment for failing in these duties and the complexities around the issue has given rise to claims that the ‘Right to Rent’ checks have led to discrimination against those without a UK passport (which is the easiest way to prove a tenant's 'Right to Rent').

If there are two suitable tenants vying for the same property and one has a UK passport and the other doesn't (meaning you have to go all Sherlock Holmes regarding their immigration status and potentially re-check this upon the expiry of any visa) there's a good chance as to which tenant the landlord may choose to take on.

Simply put, you need to see original identification documents from all occupants over the age of 18. There’s a list of the acceptable documentation on the government’s website, and, yes, seeing a UK passport is probably the easiest to verify (as you know what one is supposed to look and feel like).

Retain a copy of the document and voila - the Right to Rent checks are done.

Those who have an expiry date on their right to stay in the country must be checked again and proof taken this has been extended when the time comes. It’s a landlord’s responsibility to report occupants without the Right to Rent to the government via an online form.

If you're worried about it (more than 400 landlords have been fined an average of £654 for failing to do the checks!) you could always hire a decent letting agent to do it for you....

Tributes for Tangmere teen

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A 17-YEAR-OLD teenager who died in a collision with a car on the A27 near Tangmere on Monday, June 18, has been named as local teenager Angus Jones.

His family has paid a moving tribute to Angus, who was on foot when the collision involving a westbound Kia car happened at 8pm.

They said: "Angus will be desperately missed by all of his family and friends.

His infectious character was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.

"He was a budding gentleman who would not have recognised himself as such. He just treated people with respect and had bad words for no one. He really

"Angus had many talents, one of which was his music. Everyone enjoyed listening to him playing songs on his guitar, whether it be Oasis, Motorhead, Busted or even the theme tune to Heartbeat.

"He was also becoming a very accomplished actor, being a member of Tangmere Players for many years.

He had a penchant for accents, with his Scottish rivalling the real thing.

"Angus worked for a short time at Chichester District Council as a loader, and during this time he became a dear friend to all.

"You will never meet anyone more proud of their job and he would happily spend time explaining what he did and how he loved being a part of the team there."

The funeral of Angus, who lived in the area, is due to take place at 3.30pm on July 12, at Chichester Crematorium.

For those not attending, the family has asked that they head to the community centre in Tangmere, if they wish, to cheer his final performance as he passes.

The family has asked for donations in Angus' name, via Reynolds Funeral Service in High Street, Bognor Regis, to the Tangmere Airfield Tower Fund – a place he was extremely fond of.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Angus' death and anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have other relevant information is asked to contact police online or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Tatton, if they have not already done so.

Appeal for driver at train station

AN ACCIDENT at Chichester railway station has left a woman with a fractured wrist.

Mrs Julie Coleman, from Pagham, had got off the train at Chichester after a fourhour journey from Cheltenham to visit her daughter.

She was making her way to the other side of the road, near The Foundry pub, while wheeling her suitcase.

She said: "I saw a row of traffic building up with cars trying to pull out from the car park on to the main road.

"I was careful not to get too near any of the vehicles as I once witnessed an accident where a woman had her legs crushed by a car.

"I left a gap behind a beige/grey-coloured car and went behind, when suddenly the car shot backwards and hit my suitcase which was next to my legs.

"This forced me to fall and land on my wrist and I rolled over on the ground. I saw the L plate positioned on the back of the car and a young girl got out the driver seat and asked if I was OK. I was so embarrassed, I just wanted to get up and go home.

"Her passenger also asked if I was OK, and I said yes. It wasn't until I had crossed

the road and my wrist felt really sore."

Mrs Coleman caught a bus to St Richard's Hospital and found out she had fractured her wrist in three places and had to leave with a cast on.

She said: "My other daughter came to the hospital and asked if I had reported the incident or got any details. I said no and she rang the police straight away to tell them.

"It's been awful since then as I work in the kitchen at the Nuffield Hospital and I haven't been able to work since it happened. I think I have just been unlucky but I'd like for the driver to come forward now."

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We received a report via Sussex Police on May 14 that a car had collided with a woman in the car park of Chichester station on May 11, leaving her with a fractured arm.

"The driver of the car, described as being in her late teens or early 20s, with blonde hair, stopped at the scene. CCTV enquiries have been conducted.

"Officers would like the driver of the vehicle to get in touch with them to establish exactly what happened. Anyone with information should call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 ref 525 14/05/18."

He said: "It's my first time here at Brick Kiln and it's a really nice venue. It's a fair size, too, with a lot more people than I was expecting.

"It's great to have a charity in the background of entertainment. It's good for both the performers and the audiences."

Jez's latest project is the publication of his first novel, THe Dillen Doll, with an accompanying CD featuring a “suite” of traditional songs inspired by the story within it.

Diana Staffordowens, from Portchester, travelled to Chichester with her friend, Trish Watkinson, from Wickham. Diana said: "We came here especially for the folk music today and for Jez Lowe in particular. We have not been here before but it's a good venue to do this in. It's very unique to have this music in a garden centre, it's great."

Trish agreed and added: "We last saw Jez at the Wickham Music Festival. My husband is in the Portsmouth Shanty Men, a group playing here next!"

Malcolm Senior, from Horsham, attended with his wife, Sheelagh, and friend, Mary Gilmore. Mary said: "We are huge fans of Jez Lowe and we have been following him for around 30 years. It's a great little venue here."

Lorrayne Mendes, event organiser said: "Our next Folk event will be July 31 with THe Porstmouth Shantymen. We are also just about to launch our new Tea Dance event, they will be held on every second and last THursday of each month from 2.30pm to 4.30pm commencing on THursday, July 26."

Draped in the Union flag, the casket of Mr Johnston, 35, was carried into the service last Thursday morning.

Soldiers from his first unit, the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment, stood guard and gave a gun salute as he passed. The Last Post was also played.

Mr Johnston, 35, who also served in the Special Reconnaisance Regiment, the sister unit of the SAS, died last month.

His body was found in Stoughton Down, near Chichester, after he vanished from his home in Bognor Regis. His death has sparked calls for more to be done to help traumatised veterans.

Screen on green is greatest show

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE than 1,000 people descended on the Whyke Oval in Hay Road, Chichester on Saturday for a screening of The Greatest Showman.

Prior to the film, there was live music and face painting for children. People were free to bring picnics if they wanted to, although snacks and refreshments were provided during the film by organisers.

The event page on Facebook has been flooded with notes of thanks from those who attended the event, highlighting how much they were appreciated.

One event page follower commented that the event showed Britain at its best, people coming together, having family time and making wonderful memories.

Elsie Miller, aged ten, from Bognor Regis, said she had a great time on Saturday with her friend, Daisy Peace, and family watching The Greatest Showman. She said:

"There were free drinks, snacks and face painting and a great atmosphere.

"The only downside was that the screen was quite small for the amount of people that were there. We were lucky as we got there early and got a great spot. I would go again."

This free community event was hosted

by Grace Church, which started public meetings in Chichester in June, 2006, with a small group of people and has now grown to about 400 who gather every Sunday at sites in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst.

Getting to the point of an abseil A BRAVE mother and daughter have abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, raising £600 for charity.

Vicki Palmer and her mum, Lou Raft, from Chichester, threw caution and themselves to the wind by taking part in the abseil to raise money for The Point, a day centre in Chichester for severely disabled people.

The Point’s manager, Claire Goff, said: “Each year during July Southern Co-op challenges colleagues to raise as much money and awareness as possible for their charity partner and Vicki and Lou were part of this wonderful effort.

"We are very grateful and money will go towards a defibrillator. All new

“I enjoyed every single second of the abseil and was the fastest of the day, coming down in three minutes and 30 seconds! I had been so worried – feeling sick and almost crying – but it was amazing. I wanted to go straight back up when I got down. I shall be straight on to my next challenge soon, which will hopefully be a skydive.”

Pupils enjoy college magic A VISIT to a college proved to be a magical experience for a record number of Bognor Regis pupils.

THe 470 children in Year 5 at seven schools around the town enjoyed an experience of potions and poisons at Felpham Community College.

THey conjured dragons in the science department, developed bloodcurdling spells in drama and created magical stories using animation.

THey were supported by Year 9 students at the college during the five days of visits spread over two weeks this month.

College headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Every year, everyone enjoys the days both the primary schools attending the event and our staff and students hosting.

"THe event has grown over the years with the numbers of students we invite."

THe visiting children came from Nyewood, Bersted Green, South Bersted, Edward Bryant, Downview, Rose Green and Bishop Tufnell.

Year 7 students at Felpham Community College have taken part in an anti-bullying workshop run through Chichester Festival THeatre. THey were shown a bullying awareness production which looked at the types and effects of bullying as well as cause and prevention.

One of the students, Jennifer Hackett, said: "THe play really showed us what bullying meant. It informed me about how far it can go, how extreme it can get and how it can be solved."

Year 7 and 8 students at the college found out the importance of maths at a roadshow held by BAE Systems, the RAF and Royal Navy Education Programme.

NEW WORKSHOPS are being held by Bognor Regis-based artist Antonia Rolls to help people to live well today.

Antonia, pictured below, says she is a soul midwife who offers holistic end of life companionship and support.

She said: "I am running powerful new self awareness, self care and lifestyle workshops in Bognor, Chichester and Hove.

"THey are called Coming Home, coming back to yourself and are for those of us who have lost our sense of direction, purpose and self.

"We have given away our power and find we are reactive, not proactive in our lives."

THe day-long workshops feature discussion, thinking and creative and fun ways to discover how people think about themselves.

Antonia is holding taster sessions from 7pm-9pm on July 4 and midday-2pm on July 8 at the Waltham House Studios, in Town Cross Avenue, Bognor Regis. Entry is £5 on the day.

Her next workshops will be held on September 16 in Chichester and November 18 in Hove.

Health service launch recalled on birthday FILES stacked floor to ceiling marked the start of the NHS in Chichester.

One of the health service’s original workers has recalled its launch at it celebrates its 70th anniversary on July 5.

Valerie Gostling, nee Storey, says an immense amount of effort laid behind the creation of a state-funded health service. But the tale of administrative staff toiling away over typewriters and filing cards is always lost in the understandable attention on doctors and nurses.

She said: “THe amount of work was unbelievable. THe service had been running for just eight months when I started in the ophthalmic department.

“Everyone wanted teeth checked and glasses. THe work came in each day and was stacked in an empty room, floor to ceiling. Each day, we took a bundle of work and sat and completed it. Cards were constructed and details of the glasses entered on them.

“At 9am every day, two of us pushed a large wicker basket to the general Post Office sorting office for our day’s post.

THe sorting office was in South Street then, just past the Iceland shop, which was the Odeon Cinema.

“We pulled it back to the office and its contents were sorted for each office."

Valerie, 85, of Tozer Way, left school aged 15 and two weeks, and began work in the NHS’s West Sussex Executive Council in South Street.

Its role was to pay all the doctors, dentists and opticians in the county.

Every one of the 500,000-plus residents

had to be registered for them and to have their own index card.

“We hear a lot of the anniversary for the hospitals and wonderful nurses. At our office, it was making the medical cards and records, dealing with the general public – all the admin side of things and, of course, paying the money,” she said.

On her first day, she had to learn to make 40 teas and coffees and deliver them to everyone in the right cup in the right room each morning.

THe office has become Cote Restaurant but then had Turnbull gents’ outfitters on the ground floor and the executive council on the first and second floors.

Mr Down was manager of the large office and later received the MBE for overseeing the huge job of coping with the change-over.

“We thought we had all earned the medal ourselves,” said Valerie. “We were 15 young people straight from school. We all got on so well and remained friends for many years.

THeir working week was 38 hours, with occasional Saturday mornings, and they were paid £8 a month after stoppages.

She left the office in 1959 to start a family and returned between 1969 and 1984 and went into the registration department.

THe offices had moved to Broyle Road for more space and, more than 30 years later, moved again to Worthing.

She went on to other roles around the city as well as being a city councillor for East ward and a school governor at

Portfield School.

Meanwhile, Aldwick resident and author Beryl Kingston has been interviewed by the BBC as one of the first patients to benefit from the NHS in a programme due to be shown on July 4.

She became ill with streptococcus two weeks after the health service was founded and was treated at her then home in Tooting.

In her blog, she says she had shown the TV interviewer, Hugh Pym, her copy of the Beveridge Report which laid out the principles of the welfare state.

It is a concept of government which she says is still well worth defending seven decades later.

"We should nail the lie that the NHS is 'free' and that people who use it are idle scroungers who are 'taking something for nothing', THe NHS has never been free.

"You pay in willingly so that the service is there for you and your family when you need it," said Beryl.

Residents should always be reminded, as well, about the difference between public services run for the general good and private services which exist to make a profit.

Any deals between the government for private companies to take over part of the service should be publicised.

She said: "We need to know the names of all the people to whom they have sold these choice bits and for how much."

THis was needed to ensure the NHS could continue to fully service the country for decades to come.

STEM students Compete at Goodwood Motor Circuit Students at Bourne took to the circuit to race our Greenpower kit car against 100 other cars at the F24 event at Goodwood Motor Circuit in June.The event is organised by Greenpower, a charity getting young people enthusiastic about science and engineering through designing, building and racing their own electric car.

Sponsored and supported by local businessman, Alan Stannah, the group managed to qualify for the finals at Rockingham Motor Speedway. This is part of Bourne’s STEM initiative linking the college with industry and working with Stannah engineers.

We are part of the Shuman project where students get the chance to work with professional engineers and Alan has been very proactive in supporting the project, for which we are very appreciative.

Driving force behind trainees A SPECIALISED company in motorsport, aerospace and marine industries has seen its first trainees graduate.

Global Technologies Racing Limited (GTR) is a leading carbon composites manufacturer, based at Fontwell, with developing local talent at the forefront of its ethos.

When a shortage of the relevant skills became apparent, GTR embarked on a programme to provide training in the necessary skill sets required. Actively recruiting between ten and 20 trainees annually has been proven to secure a resource stream that can be fed into production with instilled GTR processes and values.

Martin Meissel, general manager of

GTR, said:"Potential candidates must complete an interview and a skills evaluation test before being accepted onto the programme. THey are then paid for the duration of the programme, which is in the form of a two-year contract, with performance reviews every three months.

"On successful completion of the two years, a decision will be made to either keep the newly graduated trainee as part of the GTR workforce or assist in finding alternative employment for them if GTR have no need for further resource at that time.

"THis ensures GTR have flexibility over resourcing for projects and is a powerful marketing tool through supplying well-

trained individuals to the industry. THese candidates may then be considered for suitable roles at GTR in those fields.

THe programme has now been running for two years with the trainees from the initial intake graduating this summer and all being offered permanent positions within GTR." Kieran Stignant, 25, started working for GTR in August, 2016, on the shop

floor and is now one of the company's designers.

He said: "I came here with no work experience but I have learnt so much.

THe benefit of working on the shop floor has helped me with design. I have a wealth of knowledge now. I really enjoy it and I see myself staying long-term."

Special night at pub in memory of Daniel f Richard Garrard chats with one of the MG owners

Richard back in the driving seat A 99-YEAR-OLD Chichester care home resident has relived his passion for fast cars.

Six MG owners drove their pristine vehicles to enable Richard Garrard to go back to his past as an owner of three MGs - a VS 180, an MG GT and an MG PC7.

He once drove his MG GT across the Italian Alps and remains a member of the GT Owners' Club.

A delighted Richard was thrilled when the vehicles arrived at Wellington Grange where he lives.

"THis was one of the best days of my life - a really marvellous afternoon.

A FUNDRAISING party night is being held in Pagham tomorrow to raise money in memory of a teenager.

THe evening at THe Lamb Inn will include live music from high energy and fun party band THe Mighty Dung.

It is raising funds for the British Heart Foundation as part of the ongoing fundraising inspired by Daniel Hoare.

Daniel, 18, died without warning in November, 2011, from an undetected heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

His father, Donald Hoare, landlord of

Emily Hudson, companionship team leader at Wellington Grange, said: "When we asked Richard to name his dearest wish, he immediately said he wanted to touch and hear an MG again.

"So, when he saw all the cars lined up in the car park, he was absolutely ecstatic. We are hugely grateful to the local owners who brought their cars in and helped to make Richard's wish come true."

THe Lamb Inn in Pagham Road, said: "My son, Daniel, died suddenly while running for a train. THe proceeds of the evening will go to the British Heart Foundation. We will be holding a special raffle and other fundraising activities. It's going to be a great night."

THe night is free to attend but a special seventies three-course meal of prawn cocktail, steak and Black Forest gateaux will be available for £20 a person, with £10 donated to the charity.

THe British Heart Foundation is leading the fight against heart disease and it relies

upon its supporters to help it continue its vital and ground-breaking research.

THe condition from which Daniel suffered causes the heart wall to become thickened, making it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body.

Since Daniel's death, his friends and family have raised thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation.

Its chief executive, Simon Gillespie, said: "Heart disease can suddenly affect anyone at any time and has a huge emotional impact on those left behind.

Daren and his team have made a big effort to embrace the tournament being held in Russia this summer with special attention be paid to the fortunes of England. But, being a hair salon, the tournament has a new identity: Brushia 2018!

LOTUS Styling are fundraising to help Prostate Cancer UK lead the fight against prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer has overtaken breast cancer to become the third biggest killer in the UK. Salon owner Daren Terry said: “Over the past 20 years, the number of men dying from prostate cancer has been steadily increasing as the advances in better treatments haven’t kept pace with the growing older population.

Early diagnosis is the key to saving lives. Having lost my father in March this year it is very close to my heart.”

THe salon, who are internationally known for their window displays have

used the humorous slogan, “Gents how’s your water pressure this spring”, in their window to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer UK. THis window display was kindly donated by local company, Adapt Display.

THroughout the month of May the salon has run a series of fundraising events in the salon to raise awareness and support for the charity, they have exceeded the £1,000 target.

Salon owner Kate Terry said: “Last week was International Men’s Health Week and we held a fundraising day on Friday 16th June with lots of fun activities in the salon to help us reach our target of £1,000. We managed

to raise an amazing £1,050 with the support from our clients, staff and friends.”

One in eight men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer. Age, ethnicity and family history are also factors.

A little ray of sunshine can help to keep you healthy IN MY house we have a saying: “If the sun is out, drop everything and get to the beach!" While this is realistically not always possible, I have always been of the mindset that we get so few weeks of sunshine in this country, compared to the dark grey days of our long winters, we must make the most of it while it is here.

THis summer we seem to be having an amazing run of sunshine. But often, here in the UK, we cannot plan things a week ahead, because you simply don’t know if the weather will remain the same, and I guess that’s why it's such a top topic of conversation for us Brits!

However, as soon as temperatures start rising, we get bombarded with the health message: beware of the sun. I get that the dangers of skin cancer from unprotected sun exposure are now well known.

But that's only half the story.

THe health value of sunlight, lauded by the ancient Greeks and Romans, has been largely eclipsed in recent years by concerns about skin cancer. While this is a very real, and increasing, problem - more than 7,000 people are diagnosed with malignant melanoma in the UK each year evidence is also emerging that small to moderate amounts of exposure, may be positively healthy.

It can protect against cancer: Sunlight plays a vital role in the production of vitamin D in the body, and it's believed that the vitamin may have a role in stopping or slowing the growth of tumours by preventing the overproduction of cells, as well as in boosting bones. vitamin D is available in some foods, but it is estimated that up to 90 per cent comes from exposure to sunlight.

It’s a very basic rule, but simply put, vitamin D sufficiency is required for optimal health. THe conditions with strong evidence for a protective effect of vitamin D include several bone diseases, muscle weakness, more than a dozen types of internal cancers, multiple sclerosis and type-1 diabetes mellitus.

One of the first clues to a possible beneficial link between cancer and sunlight was the discovery of large geographic differences in the prevalence of colon cancer deaths in America. THe rates in the states in the north were treble those in the south.

Since then, researchers have found that incidences of other cancers also vary according to levels of sunlight. For example, good levels of

vitamin D have been shown to halve the risk of colon cancer.

Increased exposure to sunlight may also decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers found that prostate cancer risk for men with high sun exposure was half that of men with low sun exposure.

It can boost survival rates Research based on more than one million cancer patients in the UK shows that those diagnosed and treated in the summer and autumn are likely to survive longer compared with those diagnosed in the winter. For women diagnosed with breast cancer, survival chances increased by 14 per cent, and for men and women with lung cancer, there was a five per cent better survival rate.

It can protect against multiple sclerosis Sunlight may also protect against MS and explain why the disease is more prevalent in areas most distant from the equator. Studies show that the disease, whose cause is unknown, is also more common at low altitudes than at high altitudes, where the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is much

stronger. Apparently, higher sun exposure between the ages of six and 15 - an average or two to three hours or more a day in summer during weekends and holidays - more than halved the risk of getting the disease. One theory is that exposure to sunlight boosts the immune system to prevent the damage involved in the disease. Another is that vitamin D plays a key role in the growth of the developing brain.

It keeps us healthy THe risk of many diseases and disorders can be reduced by sunlight. Epidemiological data indicate a low vitamin D status in tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, hypertension, and specific types of cancer.

So, while you should be cautious, and not be exposed in direct sunshine for hours all day long, some daily exposure could just be what you need to boost your health. I see so many people in my clinics that are very deficient in minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin D, that is affecting their wellbeing.

Just taking time to go outside, breathing in the fresh air, spending some time walking at the beach or in the hills daily could potentially give your body what it needs to stay healthy.

So while we are lucky enough to be experiencing long sunny days right now, enjoy as much as you can!

Skip work, take the day off, buy a paddle-board, learn to windsurf, sail or surf! Being outside in the elements makes you feel alive… and life is for thriving, right?

THE ASSEMBLY Rooms in Chichester, with its early-Georgian splendour, provided the musical arena for the Wish we were Pink Floyd band, pictured far right, who proceeded to delight the crowd last Saturday both with their stunning laser show and keen interpretation of Pink Floyd classics.

Having seen the Rolling Stones the previous Tuesday at Twickers, home of the oval ball, I feel inspired to look forward to the next major event to rival the World Cup for our attention - namely the Wimbledon Championship which tends to grip the nation.

THus wines to sup during Wimbledon fortnight are my subject this week and my first selection has a strawberries

and cream flavour allied to hints of redcurrant and rosehip in the form of an M&S Rosé d'Anjou (circa £7).

Light, fruity and refreshing - a great way to start watching the tournament.

Champers next and, in the interests of economy, I recommend Aldi's gem, namely the Monsigny Brut Champagne which defies belief given its £10.99 price and yet a very good Champagne which shames some of its pricier rivals.

In terms of a white wine, let us not buck the trend and select a sexy little Picpoul de Pinet and I can commend the Aldi, Tesco and M&S examples as particularly noteworthy. Picpoul is going to rival the Sauvignon Blanc phenomenon and the combination of a maritime climate and fruity zing has proved to be a crowd pleaser.

As evening falls maybe a couple of bargain reds beckon, so I will look to Lidl's normal range and select a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo mindful of its flavour with morello cherry to the fore and its affordability with a price tag under four pounds.

My other bargain red has Lidl provenance and costs just £4.29 - a very competitive price for a 2016 Bordeaux

and one that is eminently quaffable!

Alternatively, if you are after a sparkler, then Lidl's Seaview Brut for circa £5 is very drinkable, but I would advocate either a Cloudy Bay Pelorus or a Chapel

Down (English!) Classic Non-Vintage Brut.

If you find the tennis too tense, then a good old G and T might be opportune and Majestic and M&S have fine examples

thereof and my current favourites are the M&S THames Distillery London Distilled Dry Gin No 1 or the Warner Edwards Victoria's Rhubarb Gin and you can pick your own tonic. Anyone for tennis?

Community News & Views FAMOUS children's author Julia Donaldson staged a unique storytelling experience at Chestnut Tree House children's hospice near Arundel.

Julia and her husband, Malcolm, are patrons of the hospice for 2018, and treated a group of 20 children and family members to the memorable moments in the hospice's woodland walk.

THe talented pair recreated three family favourites - The Gruffalo, A Squash and a Squeeze, and Superworm - using promenade theatre to involve the children and make the most of the natural woodland setting, pictured below.

Some children and members of the hospice team also enjoyed the chance to play different characters featured in the stories.

As well as storytelling, children were also encouraged to immerse themselves in Julia's stories with a themed activity organised by Chestnut Tree House's activities co-ordinator, Estee Radford.

Children were asked to use their imagination and create and name their own monster to show to Julia. Before leaving the hospice, Julia signed autographs and wrote messages to the children, giving each of them one of her books.

One of the children, Fia, presented Julia and Malcolm with a special Gruffalo card, which was made by those involved with the hospice to say thank you.

Juliette MacPherson, fundraising development manager at the hospice, said: "Julia and Malcolm's visit provided a truly magical afternoon for the children and families, and it was lovely to see so many smiles.

"Everyone loved the experience and really felt like they were involved in something special. Moments are precious to all of us, but even more so when you have a child with a lifeshortening condition."

THe hospice provides care and support to about 300 children.

ACTOR David Wood will narrate a guide to the history of Chichester High School at a special day.

Former pupil David, who is also a playwright and author, has lent his voice to the fascinating audio visual presentation which will launch the event to mark the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Chichester High School for Boys.

He will take guests through the nine decades of the school's history, tracing many events and developments that have made the school and its students so successful.

THe celebration and reunion is being held by the Old Cicestrians Association, with the support of the current Chichester High School. It is open to all former students and staff of the high school for boys and the Lancastrian School and their partners.

A spokesman for the Old Cicestrians said: "THis will be followed by the opportunity to view the extensive array of past photographs, memorabilia (and some video) celebrating the achievements of so many former students, school teams and the many extra curricular activities that made the school so popular and famous locally and nationally.

"Old Cicestrians Colin Snook will be displaying his recently created record of the 54 former CHSB students and staff who gave their lives in the Second World War." THe celebration is being held at the school in Kingsham Road all day on October 20. Afternoon guided tours by students will include facilities such as the Chichester Gymnastics building, named after probably the school's most famous old boy, astronaut Tim Peake, where youngsters will display their amazing talents. THe combined cadet force will be seen in action and there will be the chance to visit the South Downs Planetarium and hear about its importance.

MP Nick Herbert has backed a campaign for faster broadband links for rural areas.

Mr Herbert, Tory MP for Arundel and South Downs, gave his support to the CLA's #4GforAll campaign at its celebration of rural businesses held at Westminster.

He attended a reception at the House of Commons, organised by the CLA, where he spoke to members who included Sir Sebastian Anstruther, of the Barlavington Estate near Midhurst.

THe CLA and MPs have pressed the government's digital secretary, Matthew Hancock, for action to speed up and improve the rollout of 4G coverage in the countryside.

Mr Herbert, pictured above right with Sir Sebastian, said: "Today's rural businesses need fast mobile broadband.

"We need to speed up the rollout and deliver the widest possible coverage."

VOLUNTEERS with a Bognor Regis-based charity have been formally thanked for their contributions.

Helpers at 4Sight Vision Support received personalised certificates which reflected the time they had been involved with its services for blind and partially sighted people around West Sussex.

Some had achieved platinum status as a result of volunteering their time for more than 30 years.

THe awards for this year went to: Culture Vultures for the Volunteer Group Award, Phil Adams (Fundraiser of the Year), Dorothy Lazenby (Inspirational Volunteer Role Model) and Maureen Jenkins (Individual Outstanding Volunteer).

Maureen said: "Losing one's sight is terrifying and learning new skills to cope with everyday tasks is daunting.

"Helping 4Sight Vision Support members is rewarding and organising fundraising events to help provide essential services is also enjoyable.

"It's just good to help. THousands of people in our area are visually impaired and I believe that we should all do our bit to help those less fortunate than ourselves."

THe volunteers were joined by their friends, VIP guests and staff for the ceremony at the Shoreham Centre, one of 4Sight Vision Support's support centres.

4Sight Vision Support volunteer co-ordinator Karen Mclachlan said: "It was wonderful we were able to award and recognise the vital and valuable work our team of over 300 volunteers do.

"THis was an opportunity to pay tribute to our volunteers who go above and beyond and exemplify the true potential of volunteering and acknowledge the difference they make to 4Sight Vision Support and, more importantly, the difference they are making to the lives of our members."

4Sight Vision Support would also like to thank Sight Support Worthing, West Sussex County Council, Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester and Adur Talking News for attending the event and supporting the charity and its volunteers.

MORE than 100 bonsai trees will be on show in Chichester and District Bonsai Society's latest annual exhibition.

THe range of examples of the trees will make the event one of the largest displays of bonsai in the south of England.

THe exhibition will take open from 10am-5pm on July 7 and from 10am-3.30pm on July 8 at Manor Nursery in Pagham Road at Runcton. Admission will be free.

Frank Weaver, of Chichester Bonsai, said the exhibition would be the eighth to take place.

"We are sure that well in excess of 100 quality trees will be on display as eight bonsai clubs will be showing and the event is also open to members of the public.

"THe aim of the exhibition remains, as always, to increase awareness in the growing and caring for bonsai by like-minded people and to increase club memberships.

"All our welcome, from raw beginners through to experienced bonsai carers.

"We also invite the general public along to bring any trees to show or trees that they would like advice on."

Both days of the exhibition will feature a talk by Paul Eslinger on accent plants.

Accent plants, or companion planting, can be a (flowering) plant, bamboo, grass, ferns or a moss variety. THe choice depends on the season, style of bonsai tree and other factors.

A mirror image of the four streets at the Cross

By Pat Saunders, volunteer and Amanda Harwood, learning officer at the Novium Museum THE PALLANTS is an area in the heart of Chichester which was first recorded in 1193.

The area mirrors the street plan of the city, featuring four roads meeting at a crossroads.

Although largely residential, it contains a range of listed buildings that contribute to its historical character.

The origin of the name ‘Pallants’, is uncertain and there are two main trains of thought about how this area of the city got its name.

Before the Reformation (1517–1648) this area was separate to the rest of the city as it belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

This meant that the Mayor and Corporation had little jurisdiction in the area. It was known as the Palatine, meaning ‘of the palace' because it belonged to the 'palace' of the Archbishop.

Others believe the name comes from the words ‘Palenta’ - an area that is fenced or enclosed, usually to contain animals and livestock. Perhaps this area was used to contain the cattle needed at the weekly

market.

The now lost church of St Andrew in the Pallant (also known as St Andrew Twainchurch) was likely to have been on the corner of East Pallant and Baffin’s Lane. It became redundant in the late 13th century when the land was acquired and enclosed by the Black Friars who occupied this area between 1289 to 1549. Once the land was enclosed, trades associated with processing animals, such as tallow chandlers (candle makers), butchers and tanners started moving into the area. When this land was acquired by the Black Friars, it would have incorporated Pouke Lane, a medieval lane indicated on early maps which is now lost.

Following the dissolution of the monasteries (1536–1541) land and property owned by the Black Friars was quickly sold or rented out.

People moving into this area were of higher social status, like doctors and solicitors. This area became a popular and fashionable location within the city. Those in trades

causing nuisance, smell and noise were discouraged from frequenting this area.

It was around this time, 1712, that Henry Peckham, with his wife, Elizabeth, built Pallant House, on the corner of North and East Pallant. When the house was built, the wooden cross which would have been located at the crossroads, and was used by tanners to sell their goods, was dismantled and moved to St Martin’s Street. The development of this area also saw the closure of malthouses and pubs including the ‘Spread Eagle Inn’ and ‘Brewers Arms’.

Also built around this time was East Pallant House, currently the offices of Chichester District Council. It was probably built around 1750 by Robert Bull. Starting his early career as an apprentice attorney in London, he later inherited considerable wealth from the estate of Sir Richard Farrington.

In West Pallant lies the former Church of All Saints. It was built in the 13th century and restored in the 19th century. An entry in the Domesday Book suggests that a church may have existed on the site dating back as far as 1086, under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Around its south and east sides is a path, which in 1534 was described as ‘a procession way’. The church’s parsonage

house was a small hall house and in 1635 it was recorded that it backed onto the former “White Horse” in South Street. The church closed in 1968 and was later sold.

It has been suggested that the curve of West and East Pallant may represent the possible semi-circular foundations of a Roman theatre. Decorative stonework considered the possible remains of the theatre were discovered opposite the former All Saints Church in the 1930s. These stonework fragments are now in the Novium Museum’s collection.

In South Pallant, Cawley Priory, a mansion house, was recorded in 1726. It was home to the Sanden family. On the south side of the building, the mansion would have had pleasure gardens. The site of the gardens is still used today in the form of a public garden which continues to house several examples of trees, including holm oaks and horse chestnuts that were planted during the 19th century.

During the 18th century, much of the Pallants was rebuilt or modernised and many of the houses and buildings acquired Georgian facades, hiding the original features.

This programme of building works is what provided the look of the Pallants today.

Midsummer 5 hailed a 'cracker' as PostSport hundreds complete Goodwood lap HUNDREDS of runners took on a track with a difference in the 31st running of the Midsummer 5.

THe five-mile road race, which is organised

by Chichester Runners and AC Club, starts and ends at Lavant Memorial Hall while taking in a lap of the famous Goodwood motor circuit.

More than 300 adults and juniors took part in the event, which organisers hailed as a 'cracker' as the warm summer weather helped ensure a record number of finishers.

THe race was started by Jen Evans-Brewer, of the Goodwood Health Club, who, along with the Run Company, were the event sponsors.

After setting off from the village green, a group of six runners were slowly making their mark felt. THe leading group included James Turner (Brighton & Hove AC), James Baker, Mike Houston and William Boutwood (all Chichester Runners & AC), Simon Gill (Tone Zone) and Julian Manning (Denmead Striders).

At the midway mark, Turner put his foot on the gas and came home in first place in a time of 25 minutes 48.

Baker, a previous winner of this event,

was some 32 seconds behind with Houston (third), Boutwood (fourth) and Gill (fifth).

Vet 40 runners featured well in the top ten positions with Baker first in that category.

THe winner of the Vet 50 was Jim Garland, also from the home club, in a time of 30:49 with Phil Guest of Portsmouth Joggers first in the over 60s category.

THe women’s event was dominated by Chichester Runners with Alice Cox-Rusbridge (32:38), Jane Harrop (32:48) and Imogen Mathews (33:00) taking the podium spots.

Tone Zone's Jessica THompson was a further minute and a half behind in fourth.

In the Veteran Categories, the winners were Charlotte Laing, Cathy Ulliott and Jenny Hughes. As with the men’s event, the home club had the leading team of women runners.

All the above awards were made at the traditional prize giving event by David Worcester, president of the Chichester Runners, at the Memorial Hall.

Not only did he congratulate all the winners but all the athletes and volunteers who had contributed to an extremely successful evening. A provisional date for next year's race is Wednesday, June 19.

DARTS: Neil Conn starred in a losing effort as THe Lambs lost heavily to BRSA Ravens in the catch up round of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

THree fixtures were played in the traditional week which marks the halfway mark of the season.

In Division One, Friary Z have a healthy lead at the top as their consistent scoring takes its toil.

With 73 leg points they have more than a ten point gap to their nearest challengers Lords Legends (61) and THe Legends in third on 52.

At the other end of the table, things are tight with just three points separating Friary D, Claremont and Newtown Amity at the bottom.

In Division Two, things are a lot closer as four sides fight it out for top spot.

BRSA Ravens are sitting top of three on 53 points, but they are under pressure as the high-scoring Aldwick Legion are just three behind in second.

Chi Snooker Club (46), who have the league's best player so far in Keith Robinson, and Royal Oak (44) still remain in touch and could mount a charge in the second part of the season if they can put a winning run together.

In Division Three, the leaders at the midway mark are QE2 Devils who have won 72 of their 103 legs so far.

THey have a comfortable, but not remarkable, lead over Newtown Clubbers in second spot six points behind.

Closer still is the race for the most man of the matches as Simon Edwards (Richmond 'B'), Graham Crawley (QE2 Lions), Joe Osman (QE2 Devils) and Graeme Dutton (Newtown Clubbers) all having three awards so far.

SCORES of runners turned the tide on nature in the annual Felpham Five.

THe 5.3-mile race saw nearly 140 people take part in a run along the sand out to Elmer before heading back to finish at Felpham Yacht Club.

Over the years, the event has a reputation for being a fun and fast event as runners take in some spectacular scenery along the way.

THis year proved to be no different with some good times and some big smiles taken away from the event organised by Southern Multisport.

First person home was Callum Aldous of Chichester Westgate Triathlon Club, who completed the course in 36 minutes 16.

He was closely followed by Byron Kearns (unattached) and Gavin Bowden (Team Titans) in 36:34 and 36:41 respectively.

THe first female to cross the line was Juliet Stallard (Bognor Tone Zone Runners), whose time of 40:39 was good enough for eighth overall.

She was also the first one of a healthy contingent of Tone Zone runners to complete the race. Next home for the club was Stan Mack (21st overall) who, despite competing in the Southdowns Half Marathon the day before, carried on with his flying form to cross the line in a steady time of 43.45.

David Rowe was then close behind with a time of 44:14 to take 22nd place.

Other stand out performers for the Tone Zone were Carl Bryant and Josie Faggetter, who both finished in tandem under the 46 minute mark.

Jim Simmonds and his four-legged pal Oscar finished the race in 44 minutes and were the third dog to finish. Carolyn Stapley finished under the 48 minute mark. Despite the head wind on the return, Stapley ran faster in the second half of the race.

And a special mention must go to Jo Penfold who, on her first race for the club, ran with her dad on Father’s Day. THe pair just beat the 1:10 mark to finish in 1:09.

BOWLS: Bognor A have surged up to second spot in Division One of the West Sussex Bowls League after chalking up a win and six points against Norfolk A. In what was a tight game, the men's team had just enough to edge the match by a single combined point after some good scoring from their victorious fours.

THe results were: K Hellyer, P Lichfield, N Hatfield, J Whitfield won 21-13; B Daley, G Kendall, K Taylor, J Blacow lost 16-20; M Conolly, D Parker, G Stevens, A Richardson lost 13-24; N Waddock, S Soames, D Ford, L Hall won 24-16.

Next up for Bognor A is the return fixture against the Littlehampton-based Norfolk on Monday (2pm).

Before that, Chichester A have the chance to leapfrog over the Waterloo Square side when they welcome bottom side Worthing to Priory Park tomorrow (2pm).

In Division Two, third-placed Witterings face a double header welcoming East Preston A on Sunday before a home clash with Goring Manor on Tuesday (both 2pm).On Wednesday, fellow Division Two side Bognor B have the chance to put some space between them and bottom as they host Crablands.

Middleton seek vital win at Ifield to ease relegation fears

Falcons hunt down OAPs CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club ground out another win last week at Oaklands Park, taking their fourth scalp of the season from a higher division, against OAPs from Southampton.

Batting first, the OAPs delivered a wake-up call for the Falcons by knocking in seven runs, hitting the gaps consistently despite the best efforts of the Chichester defence.

However, the Falcons jumped straight back into it with four runs in response, including back-to-back home runs from James Mortimore and Ally Warr.

THrough the next few innings the OAPs stayed ahead, but began to swing away rather than stick to base hitting, allowing pitcher Jason Mercer to turn the screw and coax them into dishing up easy catches for David Morris in centre field.

Nibbling away and edging closer, Chichester added more and more runs as the OAPs watched the game start to slip through their fingers.

David Piesse held strong at third base while Bronte Harvey bossed in the infield, turning the first double play of the

game by gunning a pinpoint throw to Lucy Morris on first.

Not to be outdone, shortstop Ben Sawkins soon turned a double of his own, gathering up a ground ball, stepping across second base for the first out and lasering the ball to first for another.

By now Mercer was in complete control on the mound.

THe pitcher showed his class tying up the OAPs' designated hitter so badly he was called out for stepping out of the batter’s box on two occasions.

THe flyballs continued to rain down into the Falcons outfield.

However, still five runs behind in the last inning, Keaton Irvine smashed a single into left, Piesse earned a walk and Hettie McNeil brought both of them in with a well-placed single.

Panic ensued in the OAPs' infield as the next two batters scored, thanks to a second Warr home run to tie the game with just one out.

THe Falcons kept working hard with both Morrises and Sawkins loading the bases.

THen up stepped Bronte Harvey who slapped in the winning run to end the game 17-16 to Chichester.

MIDDLETON CC will look to put breathing space between them and the relegation zone when they head to second to bottom Ifield tomorrow (12pm).

Sean Heather's side have been much improved in recent weeks and know that a win could lift them clear of the bottom two of the Sussex Premier Division.

With Ifield not winning in their past five, third-bottom Middleton have the perfect chance to secure points to ensure they are looking forward rather than behind them for the rest of the season.

On a personal note, Heather will want to keep up his good form. He top-scored with a half century during last weekend's narrow five wicket loss against Horsham.

After batting first, Middleton made slow progress and reached 198 for eight off 57.5 overs despite the visiting side featuring an attack including Sussex CCC players Goerge Garton and Will Beer. Heather opened and top-scored with 56 with good support from Mahesh Rawat (40) and Jack Dawling (33).

In reply, Middleton's bowlers chipped away but an unbeaten 65 from Nick Oxley guided Horsham home as time ticked down.

Priory march on to play Saints

CHICHESTER Priory Park will look to make it back-to-back wins as they look to remain in contention at the top of Sussex Division Two. Matthew Geffen's side have made an encouraging start to life in the league after promotion last term.

Last weekend's nail-biting nine run victory over Billingshurst at Goodwood has lifted Chi to fifth and within touching distance of the top two places.

A further win tomorrow in Ditchling at struggling St James Montefiore (12.30pm) and early season worries about a quick return to

the third tier will be put to one side.

THe narrow win against a promotionchasing Billingshurst side was sealed after an excellent bowling performance.

Chi were put into bat and reached 164 all out in just over 50 overs in no small part because of an excellent counter-attacking half-century from Charlie Futcher. Coming in at number seven, he hit 56 from just 48 balls to drag Chi up to a defendable total.

After the interval, Priory Park wasted no time in tearing into the visitors' line-up as Daniel Joseph (4-50) and Joe De La Fuente (4-

Fellow Division Two side Bognor Regis are looking for their first win in five when they head to second-bottom Bexhill tomorrow (12.30pm).

With Mikey Harris back as skipper, the club have drawn their past two matches, including a tight one against Lindfield last time out.

Harris anchored the innings to top-score as Bognor elected to bat, reaching 61 in a tally of 181 all out.

But the visitors frustrated the Regis bowlers, reaching 160 for eight as time ticked down.

Marquino Mindley (3-44) and Scott Bingham (3-48) were the best performers with the ball.

In Division THree West, Pagham are hunting for their fourth win in a row as they host Stirlands tomorrow.

THe Nyetimber Lane side are excelling in all formats at the moment and showed their mettle with a convincing 61 run win over Steyning last weekend.

Jack Stannard led the way scoring 65 as he opened the Pagham innings, ably support by Ryan Barratt (54) as they reached 229 for nine in 53 overs.

It was then left to Rico Webb to do the damage with the ball as he took six for 87 as Steyning were dismissed for 168.

Pagham prepared for promotion push PAGHAM'S promotion push for next season has seen the club go back to the future as the Lions snapped up two familiar faces.

After a strong finish to the SCFL Premier season which saw them finish third, the Nyetimber Lane side are looking to act quickly in their preparations for the new season.

Joint managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds have wasted no time in building the squad.

In the past week, Pagham have confirmed the return of striker Scott Murfin to the Lane, after a brief stint with Chichester City.

Also re-signing is Liam Humphreys, who spent last year at Horsham YMCA and Littlehampton Town, and Harry Williams, who was impressive in Chichester City's

record-breaking run to the last 16 of the FA Vase. With the addition of serial league winner Mitchell Hand, the prolific George Gaskin and former East Preston forward Hayden Hunter, the squad is shaping up nicely for the year ahead.

Pagham held their first pre-season training session this week and get their preparations underway away at Wessex Premier side Bournemouth FC next Saturday (July 7).

THat will be followed by a trip to SCFL Division One team Steyning Town on July 14 before a home match against Wessex Premier's Fareham Town on Tuesday, July 17.

THe headline friendly comes on July 31 when Isthmian Premier outfit Whitehawk visit Nyetimber Lane.

Pearce and Charman depart as Rocks rebuilding rolls on BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows that signings are not too far away as the club waved goodbye to two stalwarts this week.

THe rebuilding work for the Rocks rolls on at great pace as the club prepare for life back at step three of the non-league pyramid.

With one month to go until the start of the Bostik Premier season, Bognor have the core of a squad signed on for the coming campaign.

THe hunt for further additions continues as Jack Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake continue to scour the region for additions to the first team squad.

Central to their ambitions is a couple of forwards who can provide competition to Jimmy Muitt and ensure there is no repeat of the Rocks' struggle in front of goal last season.

But two players who will not be in the white and green at Nyewood Lane next year are popular striker Ollie Pearce and experienced defender Gary Charman.

Pearce said: "Our challenge, of course, is to sign players who want to play for Bognor Regis Town, and there is a confident mood in our camp that we can do that.

"Negotiations with incoming players are ongoing, but can be very delicate. It's a process that sometimes takes longer than we'd like, but that is the nature of negotiating."

THe Rocks are now back in pre-season training and have a couple of sessions of high-

intensity fitness work before playing their first pre-season friendly on July 17 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s.

Fans, though, will not be able to see either Ollie Pearce or Gary Charman in those fixtures after they signed terms elsewhere.

Both have left to join Bostik Premier League rivals with Pearce joining former Rocks James Crane, Darren Budd and Alex Parsons at Worthing's Woodside Road.

Charman, pictured left, who is affectionately known as Zorro after playing some games in a mask after fracturing part of his face, meanwhile, will be at Burgess Hill Town.

Rocks chief Pearce praised both for their commitment to the club over the years.

He was particularly full of praise for his namesake Ollie, who became a firm favourite after coming through the youth ranks.

Jack said: "Ollie wanted to leave last season and take on what he described as a new challenge. But I convinced him to stay and he did so. THis time around he has made his mind up to leave after seven years with us, and we can only respect his wishes. “Ollie made his debut for us at 17, and played something like 270 appearances, scoring more than 80 goals. We wish Ollie all the best as he pursues his new challenge."

THe Rocks will receive some compensation for Pearce's departure as he is aged under 24.

THis will be reinvested in the club.

Rocks new sponsors revealed THE Rocks will have a new main sponsor to back them in the forthcoming Bostik Premier League campaign.

Following the annual draw, Bognor will have Woods Travel on their home shirts, while Sussex Cruise Club will be on away tops.

"It's great to have the association with such a prominent and well-established company which has its roots very firmly in the town.

"We know Woods' clients travel well. Let's hope we can do the same when we go away from home next season too.

AFTER seven years at Nyewood Lane, Ollie Pearce said goodbye to the club this week, leaving Bognor Regis to join Bostik Premier rivals Worthing. In an exclusive interview, the popular frontman spoke to the Post to explain why he's taken the decision.

After seven happy years at the Nye Camp, why are you moving on?

It wasn’t an easy decision to make at all but I need a fresh challenge. I was thinking about it 12 months ago when we got promoted. But after speaking to Jack and others I decided that was not the right time to do it. I wanted to have a go in the National South. But, if we'd not gone up, I think I would have left then.

I made my mind up at the back end of this season that I needed to leave. When you have been somewhere six or seven years you start to go stale as a footballer and I needed a change. It was becoming too comfortable and after the disappointment of relegation last year I needed a new challenge.

Why move to Worthing?

Being a non-league footballer it's not like you have lots of choice; it's not like I can move to the other end of the country for a club.

I know moving to a rival may be difficult for some fans but for me it was the right thing.

THey are a club that are on the up with a good chairman, a good manager and good players and in the next few years they want to be looking at the National League, which is where I want to be.

Last year was frustrating for you and the club. Did that have a part to play in your decision?

easy season for anyone. For me personally I was out injured for a while which was frustrating.

With Bognor perhaps looking to steady the ship this year it made me think about what I need at this time of my career. I need to think about pushing on, although that doesn't mean I have not loved the club and being part of it.

What are your favourite memories playing at Bognor?

THe header I scored on my debut at East THurrock will live with me for a long time.

But there are so many memories, such as the FA Trophy run, playing away at Grimsby in the semi-final of that competition and then getting promoted two seasons ago. It's been really special being part of teams that have been successful. I really couldn't have asked for more as a young player.

What's your favourite goal?

It has to be the one against Dulwich which sealed promotion. It wasn't the prettiest but it got us the win and into the National South.

It's importance makes it more special than any 30 yarder.

Will it feel strange to play against the Rocks?

It will be weird and different as I've been used to putting on a Bognor shirt for the past five years. Coming to Nyewood as an opponent is never easy but I have a new team to play for and hopefully I'll get a good reception.

What do you say to the fans?

I admit it is probably not easy for them to take but I would like to thank them, especially the younger ones, who've always supported me. THere's a real togetherness at the club with fans and players which has made it a really special place to play.
