Department store set to close

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RETAIL giant House of Fraser is set to close its Chichester department store in West Street in the next six months.

THe future of House of Fraser was confirmed with the closure of over 30 stores yesterday morning.

House of Fraser confirmed it filed in the

court, on Wednesday, June 6, proposals for company voluntary arrangements (CVAs).

Bosses of the department store said without the proposals, House of Fraser has no viable future and they are central to the significant restructuring of the business.

Colin Hicks, Chichester BID chairman said: "We are being proactive as Chair of the retail strategy working party

developing a forward looking one for the Chichester Vision.

"Chichester is currently performing no worse than anywhere else, indeed we are currently the fourth most robust high street in the country.

"Our high street already has the more successful retail businesses present and is evolving in line with current trends that will help our transition to the new reality.

Northern route is backed by county A MITIGATED northern route for the A27 has been chosen as West Sussex County Council's preferred option.

In a report created by consultants, Systra, there were two options, one southern and one northern.

THe county council has considered that the submission to Highways England should include the ‘mitigated northern route’ as the county council’s preferred option, subject to the inclusion of important mitigation measures that are needed to make the scheme acceptable in environmental terms and the ‘full southern route’ as a reasonable alternative to mitigate the community consensus and policy fit risks associated with the ‘mitigated northern route’.

In it's decision report, the council said: "In July 2016, Highways England published five options for improving the A27 at Chichester for public consultation. However, none of options secured support from a majority of the consultation respondents and on February, 28 2017, the Secretary of State wrote to Highways England cancelling the scheme because of the lack of local consensus about how the A27 at Chichester should be improved.

"In response to the Secretary of State’s announcement, the county Ccouncil convened a community meeting to try to build consensus and develop a way forward through the ‘Build A Better A27’ initiative.

"THe BABA27 community group established themes and key requirements to inform a set of ‘success criteria’ for the A27 Chichester scheme.

Transport and engineering consultants,

Systra, were appointed to provide independent technical advice and support to the community group to promote a scheme for inclusion in the Government’s second Roads Investment Strategy (RIS2 - 2020-25).

"Systra have worked with the BABA27 community group to understand key issues and constraints and identify a long list of possible options. THe long list has been sifted down to a short list of five conceptual options: three are assessed to be ‘undeliverable’ or ‘undesirable’ but there are two ‘desirable’ conceptual options that meet, or meet most of, the success criteria identified by the group; a ‘mitigated northern route’ and a ‘full southern route’.

"However, there continues to be a wide range of views among local stakeholders and, at present, no clear majority in favour of any conceptual option.

"THere are three potential approaches to promoting a scheme to the Government for inclusion in RIS2, each of which has different advantages and risks. It is considered that Approach C should be taken forward, that is, promoting one of the two desirable options as a preference but also promoting the other one as a ‘reasonable alternative’."

THe cabinet member will write to Highways England requesting that the A27 Chichester scheme is included in the second Roads Investment Strategy (RIS2) stating that the ‘mitigated northern route’ is the county council’s preferred option but that the ‘full southern route’ should also be developed as a reasonable alternative.

Members of the county council's environment, communities and fire select committee also backed the mitigated northern route as their preferred option.

LEADING councillors at Chichester District Council are to be recommended that two routes are promoted equally to Highways England as part of the community’s aims to find a solution to improve the A27 at Chichester.

At a special meeting held today, the council’s cabinet will decide on whether to recommend that councillors support Approach A. THis would promote a mitigated northern route and the full southern route without indicating a preference for either option when asking the Government to include a scheme in its second Roads Investment Strategy

(RIS2).

If the recommendation is agreed, then all Chichester District councillors will have the opportunity to debate this important issue at a special full council meeting.

THe recommendation, if agreed, does not mean that the scheme would definitely go ahead. Highways England would need to carry out further technical assessment on both concepts, which would be shared in the autumn. It would then publish a draft business plan next April which would contain potential schemes to be included in the second Roads Investment Strategy.

From animal magic at the mini farm, to the terrific tricks of children’s entertainer Nick Clark, as well as a bouncy castle, treasure hunt, tombola and face painting, there was plenty for all the family to enjoy.

Popular characters Mr and Mrs Incredible were on hand to meet and greet visitors and pose for photographs.

Executive chef at THe Goodwood

Hotel, Mark Foreman, cooked up some mouth-watering masterpieces during a demo for budding barbecue enthusiasts and showcased his expert tips for the perfect outdoor dining experience.

Free refreshments were on offer throughout the event, including a delicious hog roast, candy floss and ice cream.

Richard Murrell, depot manager at Covers Home Ideas, said: “We were really lucky that the sun was shining throughout the Covers summer fayre on Saturday.

"It was wonderful to see so many families coming out to join us and enjoying all the activities on offer.”

THe news comes after House of Fraser warned of 'underperforming' stores last month and announced plans to sell a significant stake to Hamleys boss C.banner.

THe 31 outlets would close by early next year under the CVA, a form of insolvency that enables a business to rearrange deals with landlords.

Following a comprehensive review of the group’s entire property portfolio, the directors of the companies have identified 31 stores for closure, including Chichester, which will reduce the total store estate to 28 stores.

Pending approval of the CVAs, it is anticipated that those stores scheduled for closure will remain open until early in 2019.

If this process is approved it will affect up to 2,000 House of Fraser colleagues and a further 4,000 brand and concession partners.

Commenting on the CVA proposals, Frank Slevin, chairman of House of Fraser said: “THe retail industry is undergoing fundamental change and House of Fraser urgently needs to adapt to this fast-changing landscape in order to give it a future and allow it to thrive.

"Our legacy store estate has created an unsustainable cost base, which without restructuring, presents an existential threat to the business. So whilst closing stores is a very difficult decision, especially given the length of relationship House of Fraser has with all its locations, there should be no doubt that it is absolutely necessary if we are to continue to trade and be competitive.

"Our immediate focus is on our colleagues with whom we are communicating openly and supporting at this time.”

On May 2, 2018 international retailer C.banner announced it had entered into a conditional agreement to acquire a 51 per cent stake in House of Fraser Group Ltd, which is currently owned

by Nanjing Cenbest, a listed company in China, following the House of Fraser acquisition on September, 2 2014.

Alex Williamson, executive of House of Fraser, said: “Today’s announcement is one of the most important in this company’s 169-year history.

"We, as a management team, have a responsibility to take necessary steps to ensure House of Fraser’s survival, which is why we are making these proposals.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all my colleagues at House of Fraser for working tirelessly throughout this difficult period. We are fully committed to supporting those personally affected by the proposals.”

Yesterday, landlords called for an urgent government review of the rise in use of CVAs, which they say risks undermining the UK’s reputation and deters investment in town centres.

` City MP is new patron GILLIAN Keegan, the Chichester MP, has recently agreed to become the patron of the Chichester Lunch Club.

THe charity’s formal name is the Chichester Area Mental Health Support Foundation, however, its user name is the Chichester Lunch Club.

Mrs Keegan said: "Dementia and mental health issues impact most people at some point in their lives.

"Chichester Lunch Club is a wonderful way to keep people in touch with the enjoyable things in life whilst providing an important support network to those people and their families who suffer with mental health issues and dementia.

"It is a small charity which is doing good work to support the community in Chichester and I am delighted to support the charity in any way I can.”

` Thefts from cars ON SUNDAY, May 20, a vehicle in Mill Close, Chichester, was broken into and a fuel card and sunglasses stolen. Serial 1115 of 21/05.

On THursday, May 24, at about 5am, a man was spotted trying to break into a vehicle in Robinson Close, Selsey. No entry was gained but damage was caused to the handle.

THe man is described as being 5ft 8in tall, wearing a grey hoody, dark trousers and trainers. Serial 0137 of 24/05.

Also in Petts Close, Selsey, overnight on Wednesday, May 23, a vehicle was entered and an electronic notepad stolen. Serial 0199 of 24/05.

Cafe plans put on hold

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A POPULAR cafe in the city's Priory Park has been saved from demolition after members of Chichester District Council's cabinet agreed it was too soon to make the decision.

At the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors looked at the enhancement project on Chichester's Priory Park in which officers had recommended demolishing the current depot, public toilets and cafe buildings, constructing new public toilets and a roller store and turning the brick pavilion into permanent use for a cafe and also providing space for community uses including existing clubs currently using the park.

THe cabinet decided that it was too soon to make a decision on the wider enhancement scheme. THey have agreed to put it on hold until the planning position regarding the temporary cafe facility in its present location is resolved.

THe planning permission for Fenwick's Cafe is due to expire in 2020. Meanwhile, work to remove the old depot buildings and repairs to the statue will go ahead.

THe approved work was part of a bigger scheme to enhance the north west corner of Priory Park, with the aim of improving

its facilities from 2020 onwards.

THis area of the park contains several outdated buildings, including an old storage and maintenance area. THe aim was to remove or refurbish them and then open out the refurbished space to a variety of community uses including a cafe in the brick pavilion.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of the council, said: “Over the last year we have been liaising closely with groups who use the park, including the current cafe owners, about ways in which we can improve the facilities in this area of the park for everyone who uses it.

“After the cricket club vacated the brick pavilion in 2016, the council, as landowners thought this would be an opportunity to look at this area as a whole. THe aim was to see how we can make better use of the buildings and space, and open it up more.

“At the moment, with the planning issues unresolved, we have given the go-ahead for only part of the project. We will continue to liaise with all the groups involved and keep people informed.”

Last year, the council agreed to an options appraisal to be made and commissioned an architect to examine this area of the park and come up with a series of proposals. Eight original options were drawn up with three shortlisted.

Dawn said: "We have had so much support with tweets, letters, emails and Facebook messages. We have even had new customers visiting the cafe in support.

"THe decision at the cabinet meeting was a huge relief that common sense has prevailed and perhaps the council are listening to the public.

"THey will be knocking down the depot buildings and repairing the statue with the broken arm but everything else is to be put on hold until we now have a discussion with the planning department.

"THe only reason we are told we cannot stay here is because the planners don't like it, but they cannot give us any valid reasons."

Dawn and Rob have a meeting today

with an officer from the planning department after the outcome of the cabinet meeting.

She continued: "THe first May bank holiday, on the Monday, we served over 1,300 customers. If this cafe was to relocate, can you imagine all of those people flowing in and out of the building in the corner? Behind there is the quiet, reflective sensory gardens which will be disturbed. THey just haven't thought this through."

Chairman of the Friends of Priory Park, Richard Plowman, said: "We welcome this decision, its a really good result and shows the efforts made by the Friends of Priory Park.

"THe next step is to go forward with the planning application to establish the cafe as the place that it is - the heart of Priory Park."

“Aspiration, Innovation and Motivation”

Students battle it out at STEM Inter-Schools Challenge Bourne Community College students were invited to take part in the The STEM Inter-Schools Challenge at Churcher's College in Petersfield.

Schools were invited from the local area to enjoy a day of hands-on team challenges with a robotics theme. Mr. Ellis and Mr. Carter took 16 STEM engaged students from Years 7 to 9.

The day involved different challenges from creating robotic arms to developing a VEX robot challenge. The Bourne students won an award for their involvement in the Geodesic Challenge. All of the students enhanced the skills they have developed at STEM club and enjoyed the day.

The 5 Primary Schools from the local area were asked to bring 10 STEM curious students from Years 5-6. They took part in a Microbit BattleBot challenge that was designed and developed

by Mr. Carter and students, Rose and Jamie from Bourne Community College.

The primary schools, including Southbourne Juniors, designed their own football playing robot and then created a BattleBot to compete in the Grand Finale of the BattleBot Robot Wars.

A scarily good time at Oving

RESIDENTS in Oving showed off their scarecrow creations on Saturday with the annual Scarecrow Day. Over 1,000 visitors travelled around the village to look at the bird scarers and enjoy a range of entertainment.

THe scarecrow awards awarded by judge, actress Sue Jameson, went to Boxgrove School and to the Skipper -Wallis family for Henry VIII. THe visitors choice award went to Charlie for his Stephen Hawking scarecrow.

Emma Cosstick and Kevin Lochner, from Hawking About, brought along a Harris Hawk, Kestrel, Barn Owl, Tawny e planningOwl and an African Spotted Owl to the ome of theevent.

Kevin said: "THis is our third time May bankcoming to this event. It is definitely we servedlooking busier today then last time, which cafe was towas two years ago, so it has grown in all of thosepopularity. Enya said: "I've enjoyed looking at the scarecrows and really liked making the slime. It's great because you can choose your own colours and decorations.

Isabelle added: "I really liked the birds and doing this slime. My favourite scarecrow was the Brexit one."

Sue Catlett, co-organiser of the day, said: "Well, what an amazing day we had!

THe sun shone, the steel band played, actors acted, ferrets raced, hawks looked magnificent, pigs slept, choir sang, archers bent their bows, judges judged, ice creams licked, trailers ridden, cream teas enjoyed and we all had a lovely day!

"THanks to all who made scarecrows, to our amazing and wonderful volunteers, to the cadets from the 461 Squadron ATC, Dawn and Gareth, our community wardens, and to the people who bought their cars to be admired, to Tim for his tuck shop, who kept his cool when the Haribos melted, to the Huttons for the use of their garden, the youth club, Ralph on the Pimms, and Tony for his inimitable microphone pizzazz.

` College festival MORE than 50 live bands are set to perform tomorrow at the annual Chi-Fest event.

Showcasing the musical talents of college students (past and present) as well as local groups, musicians and performers, there will be plenty of family activities, with lots to keep the kids entertained including dance workshops and sing-a-longs – as well as the Greatest Showman Experience!

Tower target flies up high

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Tangmere Control Tower are delighted to have reached the funding target in the first stage.

THe £10,000 amount needed was to start the initial stages of rescuing and restoring the iconic and historic war-time building from obscurity and dereliction.

THe control tower was part of RAF Tangmere which was a Royal Air Force station famous for its role in the Battle of Britain. THe tower was constructed in 1943 and in use on D-Day when the airfield was an important Fighter Command station.

THe flying control tower remained in use right up until the point when the airfield closed as an RAF station in 1970.

With just over £1,000 raised, on Sunday a further donation of £8,553 was made by Neil Cotty, who wrote on the Justgiving page: "An important part of local history.

While all this was taking place Memorial Hall raffle tickets were being sold with a first prize of a pair of return tickets to New York sponsored by Fat Face and the Flight Centre in Chichester, this prize was eventually won by a young local Navel Marine, home on leave with his girlfriend.

Tony Roach & the Jazz Quartet provided entertainment and ice creams were enjoyed from Caroline’s Dairy Hand Made Luxury Ice Cream.

Stalls included; plants, a boat jumble with a beautiful sailing boat given to the fete, books, bottles and then an array of fun stalls including a coconut shy, duck pond, ring the bull and splat the rat.

THe fete made a fabulous £8,500, all thanks to the enormous efforts of Itchenor residents who worked so tirelessly to make the event a success.

RESIDENTS in Itchenor gathered on Saturday, May 26, for their first Village Fete in nine years.

THe fete was organised by the Itchenor Memorial Hall and St Nicholas church with most of the monies collected going towards refurbishment of the Village Memorial Hall which was built shortly after the Second World War. THe fete was fortunate with the weather, as predicted thunder and rain seemed to overshoot the event altogether.

Children and adults were immediately confronted by the East Wittering Fire Brigade and a fire Eengine upon arrival.

THere were abundant activities and things to see and do, there was a dog show which was enormously popular and run by its organisers, all of whom had been experienced exhibitors at Crufts in the past, with their own dogs.

Making and creating at art festival

INSPIRATION was everywhere to be seen for visitors to West Dean over the weekend.

THe annual Art and Craft Festival was held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and saw over 4,500 visitors through the gardens.

Creative juices were flowing as visitors could watch expert demonstrations by artists and craftsmen, have a go at activities or purchase luxury craft items.

Alison Sandeman, senior pottery and ceramics tutor at West Dean, showed her skills to visitors in a tent outside.

She said: "I have been teaching here since 1974. Pottery is still really popular and is going from strength to strength

over the years.

"It was ramping up in popularity even before the TV show, The Great Pottery Throw Down, on BBC2 last year, but even more so now.

"I started pottery at the age of about 15.

I went on a visit to watch a potter at work and that was it, I decided that is what I wanted to do. I went to Bournemouth Art College and loved it."

Visitor Annie Peters and her daughter Lisa, aged nine, visited on Sunday. Annie said: "It's such a beautiful place to come to here, it's full of inspiring things to do and see and the setting is just fantastic.

"I love the house, it's great to go and have a look inside and there are so many crafty things to do. I haven't decided what to do yet! I have got a couple of bits of jewellery from a stand and a nice print."

Talks, workshops and tours included pottery, woodcutting, drawing, willow weaving, printmaking, sewing, painting, leather-work and many more.

Hester Cox, a print maker from the Yorkshire Dales, had a stand to sell her prints to the public. She said the event had been really successful, as she managed to cover her costs after Friday's show.

She said: "It has been really good. I have enjoyed being here and the weather has been incredible.

"THis is a new audience for me, I don't have any galleries in this area so it gives me a presence. I have met a few people who have come back from two years ago, when I was last here.

"I had one man who came all the way up to Yorkshire after seeing me here last time, to do a workshop with me!"

Visitors are out in bloom for an earthly paradise of flowers in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OVER 50,000 flowers in rich colours and sweet perfumes were arranged in Chichester Cathedral over the weekend for the bi-annual Festival of Flowers.

More than 15,000 visitors from across the country travelled to Chichester to witness 80 flower arrangements created by over 240 flower arrangers expressing the theme of this year's festival - "THis Earthly Paradise".

THe theme incorporates plant hunting, botany, horticulture and conservation, and will celebrate plants from across the globe, looking at how they have shaped continents and continue to inspire today’s gardeners and explorers.

THe patron for the 2018 Festival is Emma Bridgewater, British designer and businesswoman, whose distinctive ceramics have a world-wide following.

Emma was delighted to be supporting the Festival of Flowers. She said: "I feel a keen sense of anticipation already for that moment when you step into Chichester Cathedral to find it mystically transformed with the scent, colour and beauty of 50,000 flowers."

To celebrate Emma’s support, a souvenir special edition Emma Bridgewater Chichester Cathedral mug was on sale at the festival fair.

THe Festival of Flowers also showcased several ‘firsts’. THis year brought a new - never seen before - tea rose, ‘Nostalgia’, which was specially designed and grown for this year’s event. THe rose is highly perfumed with creamy blooms that are uniquely edged with cherry red. ‘Nostalgia’ is the creation of accomplished local growers Jonathan and Elizabeth Sawday, from Apuldram Roses.

THe festival also launched nine brand new gerberas - gerberas are considered to be classics among ornamental flowers and these new gerberas have been grown by the internationally known Dutch firm, Holstein Flowers.

THe cathedral’s Ruth Poyner, head of communications, marketing and visitors services, said: "Over the years, the Festival of Flowers has raised much needed funds towards the essential restoration of the cathedral.

"All funds raised this year will support the re-covering of the cathedral’s unique medieval roof, a major project estimated at £5.8 million. So we are incredibly grateful to the thousands of people that have come to experience this wonderful festival.

"Without doubt, they are helping to conserve this building for future generations."

Charles and Sandra Clarke, from Bedfordshire, came just for the festival

after a leisure group they go to had told them about it.

Mrs Clarke said: "We have never been to Sussex before. It's beautiful here. THe flowers are spectacular. All the different colours and flowers - It's so lovely."

Mr Clarke added: "THere are places you go to which you tell your friends about.

THis festival and Chichester is one of those places. We would love to come back to the cathedral after the Festival of Flowers has finished.

"It is a lovely building and it is good they have kept it this way. Our garden at home is maintenance-free, we like flowers but this is like art. Seeing the amount of work which has gone in is amazing."

Patricia Booth and Ailsa Clarke, from Hellingly, came with two other friends for the event for the third time.

Ailsa said: "Every year this festival gets better. It just takes my breath away at how they do it all, they must plan years ahead to get it like this."

Patricia added: "I do flower arranging in my local church so while I am here I will try and get some ideas. I would definitely recommend other people to come here, too. It is so colourful and the money raised is going towards the roof which is really worthwhile."

A cut above the rest with Q

Let’s get together is the new message from Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester as it launched its new community initiative, aimed at combating loneliness and giving people who sometimes feel isolated a weekly event they can really look forward to.

Good Company is a weekly coffee club which started at the end of last month and is being held every Wednesday morning in the welcoming surroundings of a spacious dedicated area in the multiaward-winning salon on North Street.

Q Hair and Beauty has always been a keen supporter of local charities, good causes of all kinds and many community initiatives. THe coffee club is the brainchild of business administrator Natalia Baker, and managing director Dawn Lawrence-Grant was delighted to embrace the idea and give it the salon’s full backing.

“Come and join our club!” She said.

“Many of our guests call our salon the House of Q and we have always liked to be at the heart of the community. Now we’re reaching out to people who feel a bit isolated or lonely and inviting them into our ‘home’ to enjoy a chat with others who are in a similar situation.

“Our lovely townhouse was a family home in the past and still has a real family atmosphere. We have a large and comfortable area on the ground floor which is ideal for an informal club, so we thought we would invite people into our

home to spend a morning they would look forward to every week.

“We really want to reach out and make a difference and our coffee club seems like the ideal way to do something good for the community. It’s very close to my heart, having experienced the loss of my mum and I am so fortunate that my dad lives within a very supportive

community. But imagine if he didn’t and became lonely and cut off from things – it doesn’t bear thinking about."

At the weekly informal get-together there will be plenty of coffee and other refreshments, together with cards, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and other board games. THere will also be some mini demonstrations of treatments, such as

manicures from the beauty therapists.

THere is no charge for going along to the club meetings, but small donations would be welcome for the salon’s charity of the year, currently Canine Partners, based in Midhurst.

A new boost for economy

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CONSTRUCTION work is well underway on six new industrial units in Terminus Road, Chichester, to help boost the local economy.

THis is the second building project on the Terminus Road Industrial Estate that has been commissioned by Chichester District Council to support local businesses.

THe £2 million industrial units are based on Plot 21, which was previously home to Goodwood Metalcraft and should be completed by October, 2018.

Each unit will provide between 230

and 300 square metres of floor space. It is predicted that each unit will employ around five people.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: "I’m very pleased to see this excellent new facility taking shape so quickly. One of the key aims of this scheme is to improve the area's economy by attracting new employers.

"Because the site is owned by the council, the rental income will go towards helping the council provide key services for our residents."

Garden makeover for NHS birthday AS PART of plans to celebrate its 70th birthday, the NHS and the RHS are joining forces to raise awareness of how gardening, gardens and green spaces are good for health.

Mrs Rennie Wells, from Bosham, collected money to fund the redesign of some very neglected spaces at the outpatients area in St Richard's Hospital.

THe area had become dangerously derelict and was closed to the public.

However, the Friends of the hospital group arranged funding for the repairs and heavier construction.

THe gardens have been designed on the whole to look after themselves but

provide interest and colour for most of the year and are now accessible to all.

Part-time gardener Mrs Joan Barrowcliffe said: "THe improvement to this unloved space is a joy to behold and provides a place where both staff and patients can relax and be close to nature.

"THe gardens are now maturing nicely.

We do require more volunteers to help keep these gardens maintained with gentle pruning, weeding and mulching."

GET WISE to the lies, Chichester shoppers will be told next week.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice service and West Sussex Trading Standards have joined together to help people know they have been conned. THe session is at Tesco Extra in Chichester on June 14. from 10am-1pm.

Luca Badioli, the chief executive of the Citizens Advice in the area, said: "'Don't miss a trick, be scams aware' is our message to people. While there might be new scams cropping up all the time, the tactics of scammers remain the same. From getting contacted out of the blue to being pressured to sign up to a deal on the spot, our events will reveal the telltale signs of a scam that people need to keep an eye out for.

"While all of us can have the bad luck of being targeted with a scam, we hope this event will stop more scammers from running off with people's money."

THe staffed displays are part of this year's scams awareness month - a national campaign which encourages people to report and talk about the risks and experiences of being conned.

People will learn about the common signs of a scam, such as receiving an offer that sounds too good to be true or being told to pay an advance fee for an item or service.

Attendees will also be encouraged to report scams so that the police can take action. Advice will also be given on how to try and get back any money that has been stolen.

Raising hair miles to fund princess wigs TWO friends from Southampton and London have travelled to Chichester and Bognor Regis and raised over £700 in a combined effort of a haircut and a triathlon.

Rosie Bettles, 26, and a friend, Janine Berwick, 30, have donated 24 inches of hair between them to the Little Princess Trust.

THe charity turns a 12-inch donation into a free wig for a child who has lost their hair to cancer.

It can take between seven and ten donations of hair to make just one wig, so the charity buys more hair that is the same to bulk it out, which can cost around £350.

THis inspired the women to do some fundraising to accompany their hair donation and decided to take part in the Chichester triathlon last Sunday to raise £350 each ensuring a wig can be made from their hair.

Rosie said: "We have always loved having long blonde hair but recently decided it's time to go shorter, and what better to do with the excess than donate it to the Little Princess Trust.

"I had been thinking of cutting my hair to have a change for some time and I have wanted to take part in a triathlon for some years.

"My boyfriend’s parents live in Chichester and supported us before and after the race, plus from all the south coast triathlons this was the one with the best routes and distances.

"When I realised I have enough hair to donate I decided to use the triathlon to fundraise. I mentioned what I was doing to Janine and she got inspired and decided to do it with me. I also did a bake sale at college which raised £120.

"We do like our new haircuts, although it's taking some getting used to as we've both had long hair for many years.

Having less hair certainly made it easier to do the triathlon.

"THe triathlon was very enjoyable, the sun was shining so we had spectacular

Charity's thanks to helpers VOLUNTEERS at a leading charity in the Post area have been thanked for their efforts.

A special event was held by Stonepillow's staff to formally show how much they appreciate the unsung work the helpers carry out towards its aim of helping homeless people.

THe unpaid contributions are made by a team of dozens of volunteers.

Stonepillow chief executive Hilary Bartle said: "Stonepillow would be unable to operate without the help, hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

"We are incredibly lucky to work with so many people who have our clients' best interests at heart.

"Our work would be impossible without the generosity of our dedicated and skilled volunteers, in terms of both the time they give and their commitment to helping others.

THank you so much to all our volunteers."

THe charity's thanks took place during

national volunteers' week, which ran until yesterday.

Stonepillow supports people to make positive changes in their lives and find independent accommodation they can call home. THat help is available all year round and 89 clients will be in its accommodation at any time.

Some of the volunteers have been in their various roles for more than 20 years. THis can include fundraising, bucket collections and staging events.

Stonepillow has 22 properties across Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Its volunteers carry out essential work on them such as gardening and DIY. Stonepillow also has two shops in Chichester and Bognor are social enterprises that receive donations from the public to be recycled. A variety of roles are carried out there by the helpers, from van deliveries and collections to furniture restoration and sorting donations.

` Ultrafast broadband PUBLIC buildings in Bognor Regis are to benefit from the fastest and most relative broadband lanks.

West Sussex and Arun councils are among those in the county to have joined together to install gigabit-capable broadband services.

THe pure fibre network is the next generation of digital infrastructure, capable of delivering unlimited upload and download speeds of more one gigabit a second.

THe network will be built, owned and operated by CityFibre and supported by funding from the government.

Welcoming the contract, Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "By investing in full fibre infrastructure now, we are getting our buildings ready for the future, to benefit our public services, their users and our residents."

THe modern technology will ensure the services and daily business of the county's councils will be more resilient, reliable and at less risk of delay or disruption caused by poor or limited connectivity.

As well as Bognor Regis, the buildings are located in areas such as Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham and Worthing.

Adur and Worthing council's director for digital and resources, Paul Brewer, said: "I'm delighted to see the consortium of West Sussex councils reach this stage.

"Once it is up and running, it will have a big impact on the delivery of our public services and, as a direct result, our communities as a whole."

A gigabit a second speed is fast enough to enable a TV programme episode to be downloaded in three seconds and a BluRay movie in two minutes.

Film makers win trophy for skills FILM-MAKERS in a Chichester club turned the tables on their rivals in an annual competition.

THe Chichester Film and Video Makers clinched the latest challenge against their near neighbours in South Downs Film Makers. THis year's contest saw the Chichester club win by a point to reverse the result in 2017.

Clive Hand, club vice-chairman, received the trophy from the chairman of the South Downs club, Roy Powell.

A spokesman for the Chichester film-makers said nine members made the short journey along the A259 for the competition.

Its first round consisted of two oneminute films, three from each club.

Donna said: "Last year, the challenge proved to be a great day out and everyone involved had a really lovely time.

"THis time we are increasing the

distance from 31 miles to 40 miles in the hope of reaching our target of £200.

"Fundraising events like these are a great chance for us to come together as a community and make a difference to Aldwick House. Dementia UK is a fantastic charity that makes a huge difference to the lives of individuals and families such as our residents."

THe 2017 bike ride was among several fundraising events to maintain the home's popular sensory garden.

Home's pride in its personal care SUBSTANTIAL investments have been made to improve the care for residents of Chalcraft Hall Care Home in North Bersted.

THe centrepiece of the improvements is a new driveway to the impressive property off Chalcraft Lane.

Sara Whitworth, its manager, said the difference was eye-catching. “It’s all about creating the best first impression we can.

“THe old drive was deteriorating and required upgrading, which we are always committed to doing at Chalcraft Hall.

Replacing it has opened up the entrance to the home and made it safer and easier for visitors,” she said.

“We listened to feedback from our residents’ relatives about the need to improve the old entrance and that’s why the owner made it our big project for this year. It took three months from its planning to its completion, but it was well worth the effort.”

But, as important as initial impressions are, Sara is equally aware standards inside the home - with its 20 patients with dementia – must be maintained to a high standard as well.

Magnificent Masala City!

Indian restaurant is a Chichester gem INDIAN cuisine is a staple of the British way of life. And as such, curry houses are in every town and city throughout the country. Of course, with the multitude of restaurants come the good, the not so good and the excellent.

THe latter category isn't as heavily populated as it could be. But in the Masala City restaurant in Chichester, we have ourselves a gem; a topnotch eatery boasting wonderful dishes and outstanding service.

We were lucky enough to visit Masala City this week in St Pancras. You may remember the venue as the hugely popular Masala Gate.

THat was its former name and it has been rebranded but, thankfully, retains all that was peerless in its previous guise.

THe menu is bursting with taste-tingling temptations. THe restaurant, says its website has "revised its famously inventive curry menu, and gathered together an expert team who are constantly striving to create Indian dishes of the highest standards". THis we certainly found to be the case.

We settled on sharing a mixed starter (chicken tikka, shami kebab and onion bhaji served with a mixed leaf salad) and chicken chat puree (cooked with coriander, fresh tomatoes in a tangy chat masala sauce and served on a crispy fried puree) -- all of it simply divine.

To the main dishes and our selection, after much discussion it has to be said, led us to plump for the murghi torkari and a naga sabwal. Both choices came from a desire to try something different from our regular choices (a chicken madras and a jalfrezi, since you ask) -- and we were delighted we did so.

THe torkari is a home-style chicken dish cooked in special masala sauce made with garlic, ginger and mixed spices; and is spicy and madras hot. Superb, in a word.

Meanwhile, the sabwal, again, was a homestyle hot dish, this time with marinated chicken with mixed spices and naga chilli, delivering an exotic, madras-hot, flavoursome triumph!

`Masala City is a topnotch eatery boasting wonderful dishes and outstanding service...

THe sabwal, we were advised, tastes so much better with boiled rice (correct), while the torkari lends itself to a pilau rice to bring out its flavour (correct again!).

THe choices combined both traditional and fusion cuisine dishes and we would definitely recommend similar selections when you visit. Alternatively, take full advantage of the takeaway service, or have marvellous meals delivered to your home.

Our hosts for the evening told us that "the inventive menu overflows with fantastic regional recipes, as well as some old favourites, collected from all over the Indian sub-continent and beyond then given our unique spin that makes them both unique and unforgettable". You will find no opposition from this correspondent to that succinct overview of an exceptional restaurant with first-rate food.

BREAKING NEWS - FILM STAR JOINS FESTIVAL IT HAS just been announced that Michael Jayston, the star of the Oscar winning film Nicholas and Alexandra, will be joining the Festival of Chichester for Poetry and Music in Chichester Cathedral on Tuesday, July 10, at 6.30pm.

Michael is well known for his many film, TV and stage appearances, including playing Mr Rochester in the BBC TV classic Jane Eyre and Dr Who's nemesis

musical genres.

Originally from Wales, Deborah Rose has sung in the company of Ralph McTell, Judy Collins, Fairport Convention and Jimmy Webb. She has performed on Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 for the 50th anniversary of late singer Eva Cassidy. Her first album, “Song be My Soul” is a collection of words set to music from Tennyson to Blake and features a Welsh Male Voice Choir. Deborah has a rare and timeless voice with a purity often likened to Sandy Denny or Joni Mitchell. She performs a wide range of Celtic music, classics, and her own selfpenned songs that chronicle her travels, love of nature, and journeys of the soul.

Mari Randle is lead singer and writer in Valeyard in the popular SF TV series. He has portrayed James Bond on radio and appeared in soaps such as Eastenders and Emmerdale as well as the longrunning Foyle's War. There is no need to pine after a super food anymore FOR those of you who know me, or have been a client of mine, you will know my love for super foods! I am always on the look out for something new and amazingly beneficial for the body.

I agree that some supplements are great, but the reason, in my belief that super foods excel in the nutrition category is because the body recognises super foods as a food. So it will absorb what it needs. Plus it’s a natural product that will drench each and every cell with goodness!

I have talked a lot about bee pollen in the past, which is an amazing super food that I love for all kinds of ailments. It’s especially good this time of year when hay fever is rife. However, there is

another little gem in the wings that is actually nothing new in the world of Chinese medicine, but is fast becoming one of the best super foods in our western world for its unbelievable health benefits.

THis little gem is called pine pollen.

I have so many clients coming to me with hormonal imbalances around the age of 35 and upward. We are all subject to toxins in the environment that produce estrogen, resulting in potential fertility issues, benign fibroid growths and breast cancer, and both men, as well as women, usually by the age of 50, produce significantly less testosterone. THis is especially true after male andropause and female menopause. However, consuming androgenic foods, like pine pollen, helps to balance these higher amounts of xenoestrogens, balancing both testosterone and estrogen equally, which is highly beneficial.

Generally, pollen extract is not recommended for children and should be avoided by male adolescents, who on average naturally produce healthy amounts of testosterone. In mid-life, when you perhaps need a bit of a boost, it's important to remember that testosterone is not only good for increasing sex drive but also helps to promote

feelings of wellbeing, uplifts the mood and stimulates a sense of willpower and enthusiasm for life.

Containing a substance called phenylalanine, an L-dopa precursor, which helps to stimulate dopamine levels in the brain, it is additionally believed to act as a natural antidepressant.

In the world that we live in today, with one in six people being prescribed anti-depressants, is it not worth trying this wonderful super food first to see how you feel?

THere are so many other health benefits to add to the list. Pine pollen is considered a highly nutritious food providing a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, all essential amino acids and immune system boosting antioxidants. Containing folic acid and other B vitamins, beta-carotene, Vit. E, selenium, calcium, iron, magnesium, nucleic acids, living enzymes, MSM, polysaccharides, essential fatty acids and a great source of vitamin D3.

And if you are all about slowing the ageing process down, you may be interested to know that Pine Pollen helps to build keratin and collagen, two compounds essential for healthy nails, hair and skin tissue. THe powder can be also be used externally by adding it to an oil or cream and used for eczema, rashes or even acne. THe pollen is known among Asian women for its beautifying effects, contributing to smooth and youthful looking skin, when used both topically or consumed as a powder.

Community News & Views MORE than 30 events are taking place across West Sussex to celebrate the work of carers.

THe activities will mark the national initiative of carers' week from tomorrow until next Friday. West Sussex County Council, the NHS in the county and charity providers are joining forces to recognise the vital role that carers play.

THis year's event will highlight how carers can be supported to stay healthy and connected. Among the events are relaxing walks, picnics and coffee mornings in relaxing surroundings to recognise carers have health needs of their own. Some of them will support specific groups of carers. Others will be open to everyone and free to attend for any family or friend carer.

Cllr Amanda Jupp, the county council's cabinet member for adults and health, said: "With the pressures of caring for a loved one, people can sometimes ignore their own health as they focus on caring for family or friends.

"Carers' week aims to encourage carers to look after their own health needs as well as those of their loved ones.

"THe events taking place will offer rest and relaxation and a chance to talk to other carers. But it doesn't stop there support is available all year round through a myriad of excellent organisations such as Carers Support West Sussex."

Information stands at many of the county's hospitals will provide help and guidance for carers. GARDEN lovers are being urged by St Wilfrid’s to give a big green thumbs up this summer to raise money for the hospice.

On Sunday, July 8, between 2pm-4pm, the hospice will open their gardens and hold the annual Rainbow Day for the last time, before they move to the new hospice in Bosham in 2019.

Staff at St Wilfrid's welcome all bereaved families and friends to come along on the day to celebrate memories of their loved ones.

THere will be activities, stalls, music, refreshments and entertainment for all the families and the traditional rainbow cards will be available should you wish to dedicate a special message to a loved one. Not forgetting the beautiful dove release, in memory of those no longer with us.

St Wilfrid’s Open Gardens 2018 season will close with the award winning gardens at Elmleigh on Saturday and Sunday, August 18-19, between 10am-5pm, at 54 Elmleigh, Midhurst, GU29 9HA. Majestic pines and two ponds teeming with tadpoles will be the star attraction at this child friendly and dog-on-leads welcoming garden.

“We have some brilliant gardeners locally and this will provide the perfect day out this summer,” said head of fundraising at St Wilfrid's, Jerry Doyle. “THere will be plenty of tea and cake on offer too!”

Every week, a class of children from St Philip's Primary School work on the school grounds in Growing Club. THey are supported by local residents from Arundel Allotments. THe children help weed, plant and maintain the flower beds and in the summer flowers are planted and fruit and vegetables grown.

THey keep strictly to their colour palette of red, white and blue even with their hanging baskets.

A SERIES of amazing vidoes about the RAF delighted aviation enthusiasts in a Chichester-based group.

THe films were shown to Air Aces, the Arun and Chichester Air Enthusiasts Society, by the RAF Presentation Team.

Among the audience were members of several Sussex RAF air cadet squadrons as well as Air Scouts from the 1st South Bersted troop, some of whom are pictured above.

During this year, Air Aces will work closely with the Southdown Gliding Club to sponsor two days for their young cadets to gain experience in low level flying, particularly take-offs and landings.

THe other charity which Air Aces will support in 2018 is

the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

THe next Air Aces talk is THe History of Modern Air Ballooning, with speaker Don Cameron.

His company, Cameron Balloons, is a leader in the industry. His talk will give members a fascinating insight into the specialist balloons the firm has built for high-altitude and space flights.

FUNDRAISERS for a children's hospice hope to make an anniversary run a record breaker.

THis September sees the 15th staging of the Littlehampton 10k as the Chestnut Tree House hospice also marks 15 years of caring for children from across east and west Sussex and southeast Hampshire.

Last year's run, pictured below, saw a best-ever 1,450 people take part and raise about £50,000 for the hospice.

Lauren Gowing, the hospice's events fundraising, is hoping the 2018 staging on September 9 will be even more successful.

She said:" THe Littlehampton 10k is very special as it was our original fundraising event, which has been running as long as we have.

"Even longer in fact, as the first Littlehampton 10k took place in September 2003 - before two months before Chestnut Tree House officially opened its doors on November 11.

"In our 15th birthday year, we'd like to encourage everyone to make every moment count. Now is the time to take on a challenge and help us so that we can continue to help local children with life-shortening conditions and their families."

One that will be taking part along Littlehampton promenade with a hoped-for 200 runners and £20,000-plus fundraising target is Team Essie.

It will be led by Lorna and Steve Cobbett, and inspired by their triplet daughter, Essie, who passed away last August.

THe team members, dressed in bespoke red T-shirts, played a prominent part in last year's Littlehampton 10k with 119 runners to help the hospice which Lorna described as a 'place that is very close to our hearts'.

Chestnut Tree House patron Tim Breden has also set himself a target of raising £12,500 with a group of friends. THey are calling themselves Team TAF and are training together to get fit and to fundraise.

Lauren added: "We need to raise £6,850 every day to pay for all the specialist care services provided by Chestnut Tree House, both at the hospice and in families' own homes."

THe run attracts a range of participants from individuals and groups of friends to corporate groups and running clubs.

THey include keen runners pushing for a personal best to people taking part in fancy dress as both experienced and firsttime runners come together.

UKULELES await those who would like to perform at this year's Southdowns Folk Festival in Bognor Regis.

Free taster sessions in the four-stringed instrument are available for anyone who fancies strumming away at the festival in September.

THe sessions, with free ukuleles from Mike's Music Workshop, take place from 10.30am-midday on June 20 and July 18 at Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

A WILDLIFE haven was brought to members of Donnington Gardening Club through its speaker, Lawrence Holloway.

Club member and well-known local naturalist Lawrence stood in at the last moment to replace the advertised and absent speaker for the June meeting.

He entertained his fellow members with excellent photographs and stories of his nature-filled garden. Many butterflies visit during the spring and summer. THey include speckled wood, orange-tip, brimstone, and large and small whites, as well as red admiral and peacock. THe mosaic of habitats in the garden include two ponds, which attract various dragonflies such as large red and blue-tailed damselflies.

Visiting hoverflies include Merodon equestris, the females of which lay their eggs into daffodil bulbs. Better mannered are the colourful marmalade hoverflies, which prey on aphids.

One evening recently, Lawrence returned home to find a rather scare moth on the kitchen window. After taking several photographs, he moved away for a moment. When he returned, he found the moth had flown up to a nearby security light where it had been swiftly despatched by a false widow spider.

Despite a difficult spring, Lawrence's garden is just about under control with its planting of many insect-friendly plants.

THe club's next event will its summer show at 2pm tomorrow in the parish hall. Its next regular meeting will be there at 7.30pm on July 6, with Richard Moorey talking about policing.

Chichester's economics in the First World War

By Ross Wilson, University of Nottingham ONE OF the more interesting and sometimes overlooked aspects of the history of the First World War is the way in which economies were mobilised for the conflict.

Every nation state harnessed the power of their industries and agriculture for the war effort. However, this large-scale activity was also mirrored in villages, towns and cities in countries across Europe.

Just as stock markets, financial institutions and manufacturers were controlled on a national level, shops and businesses at a local level also became part of the war effort.

THerefore, as the British economy was made ready for the war, so too was the economy of Chichester.

In the early 20th century, Chichester was a small, busy, picturesque market town on the edge of the South Downs with a population of around 12,000 people.

Despite the provincial appearance, within the city walls there was a thriving business scene, with a variety of shops and services catering for residents and visitors alike.

Indeed, the striking nature of Chichester’s businesses in 1914 is the variety. For example, in North Street and Northgate, there were six boot makers, four confectioners, four pubs, three bicycle dealers, three grocers, two bakers and two tailors.

THese operated alongside tobacconists, watch makers, furniture makers, dress makers and wine merchants. THe diversity and the liveliness of the city’s economy was also visible in East Street and Eastgate where another eight grocers and six boot makers were present. Indeed, at 1 Eastgate Square, the famous Garland’s grocery proudly proclaimed how it had been operating for centuries.

With the current owner, Archibald Sharp Garland (1867-1937), Mayor of Chichester, business and economics were a central part of the city’s organisation. However, this vital part of city life would be brought into the war effort as businesses and shops had their products, their prices and their customers all changed with the advent of the conflict on August 4, 1914.

THe first businesses affected by the war were the major banks in the city. In common with banks across the country, the banks in Chichester closed for an extra day on the announcement of war to prevent panicked investors withdrawing from their accounts.

THis was not an overly-cautious action as in the first few days after the outbreak of war the city’s shops reported shortages and price rises as worried customers began to stock up. Such was the fear of empty shelves and

extortionate prices, bakers from across the city met in early August to fix the price of bread.

In total, nine bakers are recorded as operating within and around the city walls and the decision to keep a 2lb loaf at 3d as it had been in July demonstrated a commitment to work together, rather than act in competition.

To address consumer fears, shops in Chichester hung up notices that deterred people from buying more than their usual amounts. Indeed, Cicestrians were encouraged to act patriotically in their buying habits in the city’s shops to ensure jobs were maintained and that businesses could make profits which supported the government through taxes.

THe maintenance of normal buying habits was a way in which all citizens, men, women and children, could contribute to the war effort. THe spirit of participation was pervasive across the city as many shops and businesses looked to what they could do to help the war effort. THe city council followed suit and suspended any rises in rates within the city as well as curtailing all construction

projects in an effort to save money.

THe consumer habits of Cicestrians as in other parts of Britain were brought under greater control through the passing of the Defence of the Realm Act in early August, 1914. THis provided local authorities to take control of resources to ensure victory. One of the most significant aspects of this order was the power it gave councils to restrict alcohol consumption and the opening hours of public houses. THese powers were put into effect by Chichester’s magistrates on September 30 when it was ordered that all pubs within the district should be closed by 10pm.

In Chichester, with a profusion of inns and hostelries which had formed an important part of civic culture, such a demand caused consternation among landlords and customers. In total, nine public houses were registered within the city and restrictions in consumption and opening hours restricted life considerably. Indeed, such was the concern that members of the Licensed Victuallers Association in Chichester met at the Fleece Inn on East Street during early October to discuss whether the early closing order was legal.

Bognor Tone Zone's Simon Gill takes PostSport the race honours in the Cowdray 10k BOGNOR Tone Zone's Simon Gill took the spoils as he led the pack home in the Cowdray 10k.

THe race last weekend was one of three to take part on the Cowdray Estate near Midhurst - a 5k, 10k and 10k Canincross.

Gill was among a cohort of 17 Tone Zone runners to tackle the off-road 10k course, thriving in the muddy conditions to finish in 1st place with a time of 37 minutes 39 seconds. It could have been even better for Gill who also had a little fall during the race.

Another to run well was Duncan Stephenson-Gill, who had shaken off his marathon legs to finish the tough course in under 45 minutes. THe ever improving Jessica THomson was the first lady home for the club, finishing just ahead of fellow runner Tony Holcombe, both running under 50 minutes.

Sean O’Donnell sneaked under the 1 hour mark with an impressive 56:39.

Running in the Canicross 10k were Debs Pacey, Lisa Robinson and three of their fourlegged friends. Pacey and Robinson finished the Canicross in 1:06, a very impressive performance from all.

THe other race for Tone Zone last week was

the Worthing 10k.

A total of 29 runners took the short trip along the south coast for the race which was in warm conditions.

THe first three home for the club were Gill, who recovered well from his mid-week triumph, to record a time of 34:32.

Second home was Peter Lee, carrying on from his fine form so far this year, crossing the line in 37:10. Sean Power was the third club runner home, the youngster who never stops improving finished in 40:55.

Despite a lot of runners struggling in the heat, Adam Norgett thrived and set a new personal best with a time of 45:15. Coming back from a couple of months off was Carolyn Stapley who crossed the line with club mates Kate O’Connor and Karl Hayes in 52 minutes.

Catriona Power, who’s still trying to get under the hour mark, just missed out this time, crossing the line with Lucy Brand and Michelle Lloyd in 1:01 and 1:02, just ahead of Lea Hodgkins and Rachel George After the race, the club said they were delighted to see so many runners from this year’s beginners group carrying on from their impressive performances at the Bognor 10k.

College academy is a 'roaring success'

PRODUCING the rugby stars of the future that's the aim for those behind Chichester College's rugby programme as the academy completed its first season.

More than 60 players have turned out in the blue and yellow in the past year which has been the first since it was unveiled as one of 21 RFU Focus Colleges.

With the aim of supporting player development, Steve Woolcombe, Chichester College’s director of rugby, said he has been delighted with the first 12 months.

Mr Woolcombe said: "It has been an exhilarating first season and the academy has gone from strength to strength.

"Back in September, we set upon the task of building a robust infrastructure to enable students across the college to benefit from the experience of being part of a rugby academy - from excellent coaching and equipment to a well-structured season, I am delighted to report it has been a roaring success.

“We were over the moon to see more than 60

students - male and female - across a variety of courses sign up to join the squad, reflecting the diversity of students we have here at Chichester College.

"We have several players that continue to play for Hampshire or Sussex and many of our girls are playing in national finals, with Aliya Seehawong representing the South East Regional Squad.

"Our success without doubt is down to the support from the RFU. As a focus college, we receive annual funding and coaching support for the next three years, which has guaranteed our status."

THoughts are already turning to next season, when kit will be provided, including international standard rugby posts.

An overseas training camp to Spain and Portugal is also being planned along with camps for junior players looking to progress.

An open trial for the college will take place on August 29 with more than 120 people expected to turn out.

BOWLS: It's been a mixed week for Bognor Bowls Club with the Waterloo Square team still finding their stride.

THere was success for Bognor Ladies, who played their second game in the Game, Set & Match League against Middleton, who were promoted to the first division last year. Bognor won on both rinks scoring 6 league points.

THat winning form was matched by the men who defeated Middleton in the PC Cup. Bognor won on two rinks and lost on two but overall won by six shots, progressing to the next round.

But there was disappointment in two other competitions as the men played Tarring Priory twice over the weekend.

In the division one match on Saturday, they only won on one rink, scoring two league points. On Sunday, they played Priory in the National Top Club competition. Bognor’s Bob Daley won the four-wood singles, but Bognor lost in the two-wood singles, pairs and fours. THe triples did not continue as Tarring Priory had won three of the five disciplines.

In the second division, Bognor B played Witterings. THey won on two rinks and lost on two but won overall by four shots, scoring six league points.

Smith is new Ladies' boss NEW Chichester City Ladies manager Aaron Smith says he cannot wait to get started as he looks to help the FA Women's Premier League South club progress on and off the pitch.

THe 38-year-old joined the Oaklands Park side in September, 2017, as Matt Wright’s assistant manager.

With the former manager stepping away from the dayto-day management to help the club stabilise in the third tier, Smith has been offered the chance to step up to the top job.

Despite the season ending just a few weeks ago, the new gaffer has his sights set on the new campaign - with pre-season schedules and assembling a new backroom staff top of his in-tray.

Smith said: "My first job will be to build and strengthen the squad, not just the first team, but also the development squad.

“We have worked hard to improve our training facilities for the new season and the contact time with coaches has also increased drastically."

Smith joined Chi after previous spells working at Southampton Women and Portsmouth Ladies.

After joining as Chi assistant just nine months ago, he played a vital role in their maiden season in the third tier.

He helped the club to an eighth-placed finish in the league as well as a run to the fifth round of the FA Cup. Smith said: “Since joining Chichester, the first thing I realised was how amazing the volunteers are.

"We don’t have the finances of other clubs, but this doesn’t matter to our volunteers.

“THey give hours of their own time, unpaid, in order to help this club reach our target of playing in the Women’s Super League.

“I have fallen in love with this club and its values.

"I hope that I can take Chi up to the next level while maintaining the community feel and the togetherness that is evident to see on matchdays."

He added: "It’s still sinking in really. For me to be asked to take over the reins is a huge compliment and I want to thank everyone at the club for giving me this opportunity.

"To now have this opportunity means the world to me."

After being put into bat, Priory struggled to get going and were quickly reduced to 154. But a patient 53-run partnership between Matthew Bennison (56) and Simon Hasted steadied the ship and helped the home side to a total of 131 for 9 off their 45 overs.

It did not look enough - but then Heath did not count on Chi's bowlers pulling out an impressive performance.

Led by Daniel Joseph (5-14 off seven overs) the Priory attack never let the visitors settle.

THe opening salvo from Joseph saw Heath reduced to 21-5, something they never recovered from as Geffen (1-6 off nine) and Joe De La Fuente (1-16) never let them settle.

THey ended 74 all out giving Chi an easy win.

Middleton out to bounce back

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to banish their batting woes as they look to drag themselves off the foot of the Sussex Premier Division.

Sean Heather's side have been far from their best when out in the middle so far this campaign, failing to register a score above 200 in their five league matches.

THose woes continued last weekend when Middleton were defeated by nine wickets on the road at Preston Nomads.

Heather's XI will be hoping they can find their form tomorrow when they welcome

mid-table Eastbourne to Sea Lane (12pm).

With things tight in the Premier Division, Middleton know that a 30 point victory could see them leapfrog over the visitors - but only if they can get their batting sorted.

Last weekend's match at Nomads summed up their campaign so far.

After being put into bat on one of the best squares in the county everyone but overseas player Mahesh Rawat struggled to get going.

THe Indian's 69 off 63 balls was Middleton's only score of note as they were eventually dismissed for 149.

In reply, the Nomads' opening pairing of Nathan Poole and Daniel Phillips made light work of the target, putting on 144 for the first wicket.

In Division Two, it's fourth versus third as Bognor welcome Billingshurst to the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side will be looking to bounce back after losing out narrowly to THree Bridges last weekend.

After electing to field, Bognor's bowlers led

by Josh Sargeant (3-39) did well to restrict the home side to 160 all out.

But Regis struggled with the bat with only opener Charlie Laforet (40) really standing up to the Bridges bowlers. Bognor were eventually skittled out for 99, losing by 61 runs.

Elsewhere, in Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to end a three-match losing run when they head to second-placed Goring.

Stuart Hanks' side have struggled in recent weeks and were soundly beaten by seven wickets at home to Slinfold last time out.

After being put in to bat at Nyetimber Lane, opener Jack Stannard (27), Ryan Barratt (34) and Hanks (28) all got starts but were unable to push on as Pagham were dismissed for 158 in the 45th over.

In reply, an excellent opening spell from Pagham's Barbados-born Rico Webb could not halt Slinfold's march to the total. THe West Indian took 3 for 45 in his nine overs but it was not enough to prevent a seven wicket loss.

Pagham snap up the prolific Gaskin PAGHAM'S pre-season preparations have got off to a flying start after prolific frontman George Gaskin signed for the club.

THe Lions are taking some time out after an excellent season which saw them finish third in the SCFL Premier and reach the last four of the Sussex Senior Cup. Keen to better that, chairman Tony Shea is moving fast - securing joint-managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds for another year before confirming that Gaskin will be in the white and black at Nyetimber Lane next season.

THe former Littlehampton Town striker has a formidable track record at county league level. In recent seasons he has won the SCFL crown with the Golds and Shoreham.

Last season he re-joined Littlehampton part way through the season although his 14 goals were not enough to save them from the drop.

He then signed for THree Bridges, helping them to second-place and promotion to the Isthmian South.

Gaskin is set to form an imposing frontline for Pagham along with Dan Simmons, who scored 50 goals in all competitions last year.

Elsewhere in SCFL Division One, Daren Pearce's rebuilding work at Selsey continues.

THe former Sidlesham manager has raided his former club to add Dan Bassill, Joe Leggatt and Harry Agostinelli to the Blues ranks.

With club man Jack Cavell and 17-year-old midfielder Jamie Williams also signing on, things are progressing fast at Selsey.

Pearce on to forward thinking after the Rocks re-sign Block BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says the club is in good shape ahead of the new season - despite no strikers yet signing on at Nyewood Lane for next year.

THe Rocks are very much in rebuilding mode after their relegation from National South back into the Isthmian Premier.

THeir ranks were boosted in the past week with the news that teenage midfielder Tommy Block had committed his immediate future to the club.

THat took the summer signing spree to ten - with defenders Doug Tuck, Corey Heath, Keaton Wood, Chad Field and Calvin Davies joining midfielders Harvey Whyte, Tommy Scutt, Harvey Sparks and Dan Beck in the Bognor ranks.

More new signings are expected soon - with the emphasis expected to be at the business end of the pitch.

Pearce said: "THings are generally going well, we are in a good place. We have signed very well defensively although we're still perhaps looking for a left back to upgrade there.

"We are quite happy with the midfield balance but we need to now focus on the forward area which always takes time."

It was up front where Bognor struggled last season, scoring just 41 goals in 42 league matches in the past campaign.

But, despite having no strikers on the books, Pearce was relaxed about finding the players

needed to fire the Rocks to success.

THe veteran manager admitted that much depended on whether Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce committed their futures to the club.

He said: "You have to bear in mind that we're trying to find a balance. THere is no point in signing the players we have if we don’t get the players to turn those chances into goals.

"I think Ollie and Jimmy will score at this level but we also need to think about a physical presence. Once we know where we are with them, we can think about other options.

"We are talking to both this weekend so we will be in a better position then."

Another player from last year still to commit is goalkeeper Dan Lincoln, pictured left, who is thought to be waiting for offers from clubs closer to his home in Reading.

Pearce said he hopes for some clarity on the keeper's position in the next couple of weeks.

One player who was persuaded to stay was Block, 18, who rejected offers from elsewhere to re-sign for his hometown club.

Pearce said: "Tommy has a bright future ahead of him in the game and we hope that he will continue to develop under our tutelage.

"He deserves lots of credit for his performances last season. We should remember his age and that he played most of the season for us in a tough league in a side that was relegated.”

Team is spirit shining through TEAM spirit - it is a much-vaunted quality that sports teams often claim to have but few actually do.

But when it comes to Bognor Regis Town Football Club, you do not have to look far to see that turning out in the white and green means an awful lot.

At this time of year, when players are deciding on their immediate futures there are many factors on the table. One thing that is common for all those who have signed for Bognor, is that playing for the team and the fans is a real selling point, particularly for those who have history with the club.

Even for teenager Tommy Block, who had offers from elsewhere, the midfielder was clear on his reasons to stay at Nyewood Lane.

Speaking to the club website, Block said: “One offer was for more money and at a higher level so it was tough to turn down but also easy to commit to Bognor.

“At my age I need to play as much as possible and I think I will get the opportunity to do that at Bognor. Despite being relegated last season, there are lots of positives at the club and I hope to continue to learn from Jack and Robbie Blake, who is coming in as coach.

Plus, I just love playing for the Rocks fans."

CAN you believe that it's now more than a month since the football season ended?

Sure, there was little to celebrate this year for Rocks fans. But the relegation back to the Isthmian Premier has failed to diminish a positive feeling around Nyewood Lane.

A host of summer signings, plus the addition of former Portsmouth coach Robbie Blake in the dugout, have helped build a real sense of optimism around the club.

But what goes on between now and the start of the season? In part two of our guide to the preparations for the new season we tick off some of the work that's going on behind the scenes at the Nye Camp.

What really goes on at the club when the season ends?

THe truth is that, for the small team of volunteers who keep Bognor Football Club running, the hard work starts now.

Signing of players, financial accounts, securing of sponsors, arranging of preseason friendlies and a general spring-clean all takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

THen there is the small matter of making sure the ground is in top shape for the year ahead.

Will there be any improvements to the ground in the next few months?

In short, yes. You only get one of the best pitches at this level in the country by investing a lot of TLC and the occasional bit of money in the turf at Nyewood Lane.

As is usual this time of year, the club has invested between £2,000 and £3,000 in getting the turf seeded. Doing it now gives the grass a chance to get growing in time for the year ahead.

As for other work, the club are looking to install a new toilet block on the far side of the ground next to the Wednesday

Stand. THe rest of the terraces will given a good tidy up along with a lick of paint to make sure they look good for the first week of August.

Looking beyond opening day and plans are being discussed to create a new cover for 250 people at the club house end of the ground.

It is likely that this work would take place during the season rather than in the next couple of weeks.

How can we get involved?

THe club is always on the lookout for volunteers to help them keep on running.

THe most important need is for someone who has a background in accounts to take over some of the financial management at the club.

But manager Jack Pearce says there is always work for those that have a few hours to give to get involved in the club.

What about the players?

When do they return to preseason training?

While the squad is still far from complete, Jack and new first team coach Robbie Blake will be putting the players through their paces from the first week of July.

Sessions largely led by fitness coach Neil Cockroft will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the run up to the new season.

And when can we see them in action?

THe Rocks' first pre-season friendly is on Tuesday, July 17, at home to Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s (7.45pm).

Further matches against Horndean (away 20/7), Portsmouth (home 24/7), Salisbury (A 27/7) and Gosport (A 3/8) are also planned.
