City MP says best job ever

She said: "I've had some really cool jobs.

I've worked for 30 years in international business, I've lived in Madrid, worked all over the world and done some quite glamorous things. But this job, is the best job I have ever had.

"I absolutely love it. It's a real pleasure to be able to respresent an area like Chichester. We have got difficult things,

like the opinions over the A27 but on the whole people are reasonable, fair, tolerant and caring.

"I am really proud of this place to represent. I hear some of my colleagues, they get masses of abuse online and things shouted at them in the streets.

"If I had that, I would give it up. I haven't done this because I want to be a target for abuse, that's not a way to live your life."

Mrs Keegan had turned up to an 'Ask Your MP' meeting held at Bracklesham Barn last Thursday night.

Constituents were able to ask their MP any questions they liked over the two hour period.

Questions included hot topics such as the A27, schools, doctors, roads, traffic, air pollution and Brexit.

From page one The biggest topic of the evening was the A27, with residents in debate over the options.

Mrs Keegan said: "I had a meeting this week with Highways England and Cllr Louise Goldsmith and Cllr Tony Dignum (the council leaders), the official statement is that there is no A27 scheme.

It is cancelled until it is not cancelled.

"The Build A Better A27 group was to get a fairer process with both a northern and southern option because the last process, where the northern options disappeared from view created a lot of concern and a lot more questions than answers. Nobody really understood why some options were being considered and others weren't.

"Consultants, SYSTRA's, report has two options, one southern and one northern, both of which are different to the ones before. If you live in the south, you will think the best option is the northern route and if you live in the north, it's the online route. We still have that. We have had it for 60 years which is why we have never had that road done, and I wish it had been done, decades ago!

"Highways England have agreed to take both options and evaluate them to see if they are feasible and affordable. That will take between now and the end of the year for them to do that.

"If one or two of these, or both, are feasible it will go out to public consultation. My part of the job is to fight for the money. That is going to be tough, they regulate the way they do road investments now which is a better system.

We won't get any more information until somewhere between September and December."

The public were concerned that the whole process felt really chaotic and rushed.

Mrs Keegan said: "We have to fight for the money. If we don’t fight for the money, it will go to another scheme. The option then is to go for Road Investment Scheme 3 which is around 2030 and RIS4 will be five years after that.

"The reason we are rushing, although I would argue this is very much not a rushed process, is because we want the money for RIS2. We are competing with other roads all around the country.

"One thing I do know is there is not a road in this country almost that is not congested. We are not the only congested road. We are not even the most congested road. It seems a nightmare for us because we live it every day."

Speaking after the meeting, exclusively to The Chichester Post, Mrs Keegan said: "I loved it. First of all there were a lot of people who turned up, a large range of questions. Everything from national issues to local issues, covering everything from housing, roads, schools, sewage, air quality and the national side, GPs and their services, Brexit.

"We had a wide range of issues. It is great for me to hear what people are concerned about, it's great to try and answer their concerns. It was great to have the councils here because, with some of the more local issues, the councillors are the ones who are dealing with them day-to-day.

"I am very happy to do 'Ask Your MP' meetings if people want me to on a regular basis in various parts of the district because it's a great way to get a lot of people together to discuss issues and hear from them and for them to ask me questions."

POLICE in West Sussex are reminding local residents to be alert for bogus callers, after a 'Water Board' man entered the home of an elderly lady in Chichester and stole jewellery.

The man called at the address in Tower Close shortly before 6pm on Friday, May 11, saying he needed access to the taps, to turn off and check the water supply. After a while, he left without explanation.

On the following day, the 96-yearold lady realised that some cash and two rings of great sentimental value had been stolen from the address.

The suspect is described as white, of very slim build and clean shaven, wearing a light grey flat cap, dark bomber-style jacket open at the front and a lanyard round his neck with an apparent ID badge.

Detective Constable Elaine Keating, of the Chichester Investigations Team said; "We think this man had an accomplice who entered the flat and searched it while the resident's attention was diverted.

"Don't let cold callers of any kind into your home unless you are really satisfied about their identities.

If they have what appears to be identification, check it carefully. If in doubt, keep them out and tell us if you think they may be planning to steal. Ring 101, or 999, if they are still there."

Casting a spell on fun for all at book event Dementia week is a success at hub

Waterstone's in West Street held a special Harry Potter party with guests dressing up as characters from the extremely popular books and films. Guests to the event could take part in potions classes, slime making, Harry Potter bingo and many more interactive activities with magical themes.

Senior book seller, Abi Crabb, at the bookstore said: "We wanted to do

something to mark the start of half-term for the children. It was a well-attended day with around 40 children on the day.

It was a really fun day, everyone really enjoyed themselves.

"It is a great way to encourage children to enjoy literature. Harry Potter is such a huge thing which everyone knows about, either through the books or the films."

Waterstone's next event is a storytime session with new author, Candy Gourlay, tomorrow from 11am to midday.

Candy's debut novel Tall Story won the National Children's Book Award of the Philippines in 2012 and the Crystal Kite Award for Europe in 2011.

A SPECIAL week was held to support those living with dementia in the area.

Tangmere-based charity, Dementia Support, held a variety of dementia friendly and dementia awareness raising events at its new facility of Sage House.

Dementia Action Week is a national event overseen by the national Alzheimer’s Society, with everyone encouraged to support the fight against dementia – sharing an experience, raising awareness, holding an event or fundraising.

Sage House ran a full programme during Dementia Action Week for people living with dementia.

Raising awareness and linking with the local community was key, and organisations were invited to hold sessions. West Bognor Flower Club created some beautiful flower arrangements with a group of people living with dementia; West Sussex County Council, O2 and Chichester Library attended Tea & Tech, which gave people an insight into using the internet, social media and modern gadgets.

Seacombe & Co Salon & Barber Shop kindly gave an afternoon of men’s and ladies' hair styling; this proved to be very popular and we had some dapper chaps and elegant ladies emerge from the Salon. Sage House has a salon which will be open on a regular basis soon.

The Weald & Downland Museum held sensory and informative sessions with equipment brought over from the museum; people were invited to make

lavender scent bags and corn dollies.

Therapeutic activities such as singing, art and socialising are held regularly at Sage House, and this week was no exception. The day care attendees had great fun boogying to classics from the 1940s onwards sung

by Harry Vinsome, together with their inflatable guitars.

A highlight was the visit from Tangmere Primary Academy; twelve children came over to practice their reading with people living with dementia and staff. It was a wonderful linking of the generations, and the Café was a buzz of reading and activity.

Sue Craig, community relationships co-ordinator, spoke about the success of Dementia Action Week: “It has been wonderful to see new customers and carers as well as our ‘regulars’ at Sage House this week. We hope that the events have provided enjoyment plus support and information for people living with dementia, and their carers and families.

Tangmere Primary School who read to our customers and staff gave the event a double thumbs up! So we hope to see them again.”

` Future of the A27 PLANS for the future of the A27 at Chichester will be discussed by members of the West Sussex County Council on Monday.

The county council’s environment, communities and fire select committee will preview the decision over a preferred approach to improvements to the road before a final response is submitted to Highways England.

The report details two routes, one improving the current route to the south of the city and the other, a new bypass route to the north.

A decision will be taken by the council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure Bob Lanzer taking into account the discussion at select committee.

A recommendation will then be submitted to Highways England and a final decision will be made by the Secretary of State for Transport as to whether a route will be taken forward as part of the next phase of their road investment scheme.

Pedestrians given red light for A27 PEDESTRIANS crossing the A27 at Stockbridge have now been diverted on a new route.

Highways England, who started working on a new footbridge across the busy dual carriageway earlier this year, have made the decision to turn off the temporary traffic lights for pedestrains between 6am and 10pm.

Complaints were made when the traffic lights were implemented, causing accidents and delays to motorists in the area misunderstanding the signs.

At a meeting last Thursday, Chichester's MP, Gillian Keegan also admitted that when the lights were first installed she was mistaken into thinking the green light as a signal for cars to move on the roundabout.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "We are sorry for the ongoing delay in reopening the Stockbridge footbridge.

During final testing in April we identified an issue with the footway over the bridge moving unacceptably. The bridge is structurally sound, but the movement would prevent people being able to use it safely and comfortably. This is not acceptable to us, so we have been working hard to find a fix.

"Our preferred solution - strengthening the shock absorbers under the bridge deck - has not been successful in addressing the problem. We are continuing work on alternative solutions, but they may take some months to design, test and implement.

"In the meantime, we recognise that

the temporary pedestrian crossing that has been in place through construction is slowing down traffic, especially at peak times, and we are taking steps to address this.

"From Saturday, May 26 an alternative pedestrian route has come into effect, directing people wishing to cross the A27 via a nearby underpass by the Chichester canal. We have installed a new footpath, signs and lighting along the route, which will take about five minutes to walk.

There is extra help available for disabled people needing to cross too.

"The temporary lights will be switched back on overnight when traffic volumes are lowest. We hope these measures will improve journeys for drivers while still providing a safe and convenient crossing for pedestrians. We are confident that we will be able to find a solution and will reopen the Stockbridge footbridge as soon as we possibly can."

Romans reign again as past comes to life in historic city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OVER 2,000 visitors attended a day of Roman re-enactment at Priory Park on Wednesday.

The event was held as part of Chichester Roman Week led by the Novium Musuem ad supported by Chichester BID. Chichester Roman Week returned for its third year this May half term with support from the Roman Society and the Roman Research Trust.

The Roman period was brought to life on Wednesday, May 30, with talks and demonstrations and also a range of static displays such as a military camp complete with Roman artillery and a field medicine tent.

Other demonstrations covered aspects of civilian life such as midwifery, religion, slavery, cooking and a mosaicist. The interactive re-enactment encouraged audience participation and included a slave auction, military show and gladiator show.

Colyn and Deborah Robinson attended with grandchildren, Miley aged eight and her sister, six-year-old Ella.

Miley said: "I learnt that it would have taken ten years for a soldier to buy me on legionnaire pay because I can sing, read and write.

"I am also more valuable because I have red hair. I go to Central School and

have just learnt about the Romans in class."

Councillor Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council said: “Roman week has established itself as a highlight of the Chichester calendar, but this year was set to be the biggest and best yet.

“Chichester Roman Week offers something for everyone, and it’s wonderful for The Novium Museum to be working with so many local businesses and attractions in celebration of our rich Roman heritage. We would particularly like to thank Chichester BID, the Roman Research Trust and the Roman Society for their support.”

Archaeoligosit and historian, Stephen Cockings was dressed as a Roman for the re-enactment. He said: "Chichester is a really amazing city. It's so good to see the investment being made, aprticualry with the Novium Museum which was not open when I last was here."

Amanda Rogan, learning and engagement community officer at The Novium said: "The event was attended by thousands of people, both locals and visitors to the area, all who were keen to find out more about Roman Chichester and what life was like in Roman times.

This kind of interactive event is a perfect way to capture people’s imaginations and bring the past to life. The event was a huge success and we hope to bring it back next year."

` Celebrating women TO CELEBRATE International Women’s Golf Day on Tuesday, Golf At Goodwood is hosting a free event to cater for all levels of female golfer, as well as supporting Breast Cancer Awareness.

The International Women’s Golf Day initiative seeks to engage, empower and support female participation in the sport. Golf At Goodwood has always shared this ethos and with over 300 of its members being women, the club has one of the biggest female representations in the UK and is at the forefront of driving the women’s game.

Golf At Goodwood will open its Academy and Park course to around 100 female golfers for the event, which will feature complimentary coaching sessions, two fantastic competitions and afternoon tea.

For those who have never played before, Academy Manager and PGA Professional Chris McDonnell will be hosting Get Into Golf sessions on the day, teaching the basics of swing technique and showcasing this brilliant and sociable pathway into the game. kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PARENTS from the Witterings area with children using the Chichester Free School have turned to the city's MP for help with transport.

With the temporary site in Vinnetrow Road, there is no public transport so the Educating Funding Agency (EFA) has provided coaches and minibuses to transport the children to and from school at a cost of £1 a day.

When the school moves to the new site in Hunston Road later this year, the funding for the buses will cease as it is expected that children will use public transport.

However, for children who live in the Witterings/Birdham/Bracklesham area, parents have asked for the support of Chichester's MP, Gillian Keegan, as there is no direct bus route to take them to the new school and Stagecoach is not offering to provide one.

There are 60 children who will travel from the Witterings in September with options parents facing, including children catching the 52/53 service from Witterings to Chichester Bus Station and changing to get the 600 service to Hunston.

This journey will take one hour 10 minutes, but only 10-15 minutes by car, and see pupils catching the first bus of the day at 7.05am from Birdham to make the connection.

Parent Claire Mills, from Bracklesham, said: "As parents, we don’t feel this is a

suitable or safe solution.

"Another option is for all 45 families to get together and sort out a car share system.

This will potentially add 30 cars to the already congested road between Hunston and the A27. It is also not practical long term and some parents cannot participate as they work shifts, or do not drive.

"Woods Coaches have offered to provide us with a coach service at a cost of around £234 per child per term.

"According to the West Sussex County Council criteria, to qualify for assistance with transport we need to live at least three miles from our nearest suitable school, with no safe walking route. This is why children from Witterings who attend Selsey Academy have a free bus service as there is no direct bus route.

"WSCC have confirmed that they are considering all transport options, including the Chichester Free School but that a decision will not be made until July.

"But they have indicated that the most likely offer will be a bus pass to use the existing routes (which do not go direct to school).

"This will give us any time to sort out alternative options or to request a school move. A number of parents will have to move their children, or home school them, if no suitable transport options are provided.

"We are not asking for a free bus service but we are asking for a direct bus route, at an affordable cost, that does not require our children to have to change buses in the middle of Chichester."

Roadworks will help to make new school safer for pupils ESSENTIAL roadworks start soon so that the new Chichester Free School in Hunston can open its doors to about 1,000 pupils in September.

The works, on behalf of the Department for Education, will provide a right-turn lane access to the school, which is just south of the A27 Whyke roundabout.

Two bus laybys, cycle facilities and a toucan crossing will also be built and there will be a ‘school safe zone’, with a speed limit reduction in Hunston Road, from 50mph to 40mph. This will be further cut to 30mph during school drop-off and pick-up times.

A new shared-use cycleway will be built to connect the new school to the existing A27 shared-use cycle facilities.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “Unfortunately, the Department for Education has only just been able to appoint a contractor to carry out the works as the planning, designing and necessary consents have taken until now to put in place.

“We are aware that this is a very busy stretch of road but have been assured everything will be done to try to limit disruption as much as possible.

“The work will be mostly ‘off-line’ (off the carriageway itself ), and there will be some evening and night-time working to try to complete the works at the earliest opportunity and avoid disruption to peak traffic as much as possible. However, there will be times when temporary traffic lights are essential for the safety of road users and the workforce.”

The project will be completed by Landbuild, on behalf of Farrans Construction, and is due to start on June 11. It will take about 14 weeks, subject to extreme weather, and the usual hours of work will be 7.30am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

A temporary, 30mph speed restriction will be in place from June 4, for the duration of the project. This will allow the contractor to carry out preliminary works, including setting up a compound.

Deliciously fun for all at racecourse festival

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FOOD lovers and racegoers headed to three days of fun at Goodwood Racecourse last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Festival of Food and Racing was attended by over 22,000 people enjoying the races, Michelin star award-winning chefs, some of the finest regional and national produce and table-top talks.

Security at the raacecourse had been stepped up following an extensive review of the incident that took place on Saturday, May, 5.

The racecourse implemented additional measures to help prevent future incidents from occurring including the presence of Sussex Police, security teams wearing highvisibility clothing and drugs sniffer dogs at the entrance.

Christine and Michael Howard from Havant are regular attendees to Goodwood events. Christine said: "Today has been a fun day. We went to the farmer's market and picked up some marshmallows, flapjacks and honey. The cheese looked amazing too.

"We went to the Gin Garden and tried some delicious flavours. I specifically like the option to miniatures because we are not big drinkers but like the taste, and could have a variety.

"We came up here this morning and had breakfast at The Kennels. We both had eggs Benedict which was delicious.

Then we got the shuttle bus here.

"It is a shame abut the fighting from the Opening Saturday event but it didn't put us off. We were on our way back to the Kennels when the fight broke out and the security told us what was happening.

"We were reassured and felt very safe. What we liked was that we were given all the information, there was no Chinese whispers.

"They told us what was going on and that they had everything under control."

A House of Fraser area allowed visitors to see some of the stores season's highlights in fashion, beauty and homeware and a printable photo opportunity was available with a specially crafter wall of flowers.

A Home-Grown Cooking Demonstration featured top chefs showing off their cculimary skills over the three days.

Chef John Williams, MBE at The Ritz was giving a cooking demonstration on the East Parade Lawn on Friday.

In addition to earning a Michelin Star for The Ritz in 2017, Mr Williams has also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef and was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2008 for his services to hospitality.

Speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post, he said: "I work with

Goodwood farm, we use them as a supply service. We have a mutual goal of looking for a very good, prime supply of ingredients and Goodwood do that.

"I have been at The Ritz for 14 years, I really enjoy it there. I enjoy doing these demonstrations for the interaction with the audiences."

Guests could enjoy races in between shopping for delicious food and watching cooking demonstrations.

Perhaps the most exciting finish of the afternoon on Friday came in the thamesmaterials.com Handicap, when Frankie Dettori won by the narrowest of margins aboard Uber Cool with a photo finish.

Alex Eade, general manager of Goodwood Racecourse said; “We had a really lovely atmosphere across the course for this meeting.

"It was great to see so many people enjoying the food demonstrations, Table-top Talks, Famers’ Market and House of Fraser space, as well as the racing.

“We now look forward to a busy June, with four fixtures coming up in quick succession. Our Three Friday Nights series kicks off on Friday 1 and we have a brilliant Family Raceday to enjoy on Sunday 10.”

` Check before you let THERE are a number of things required before letting a property and here's my top ten list to check: 1) Mortgage terms - if you have a residential mortgage on the property, you’ll need to get the lenders permission before you can let it out, or switch to a buy-to-let mortgage.

2) Insurance - you should get proper landlord's insurance, a normal policy for homeowners won’t cut it.

3) Freeholder’s permission - if your property is leasehold (generally a flat) you’ll need to check the lease to see if it is permitted to let your property and if there are special conditions that need to be followed.

4) EPC - you’ll need an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) for the property and it must be rated E or better (some exemptions apply).

5) Smoke alarms - you need a smoke alarm on each level of the property.

6) Carbon monoxide alarms necessary in every room that has a solid-fuel burning device, although I choose to install one free of charge in all my managed properties regardless.

7) Electrical safety - while there isn’t (currently) a legal requirement for landlords to have them certified, you are responsible for providing them in a good condition - so it may be sensible to get them checked by a professional. Any loose electrical items (microwaves/kettles etc) will need PAT testing.

8) Gas safety - any gas appliance needs to be certified by a registered gas engineer.

9) Furnishing - most rental properties are let unfurnished, but if you plan to supply any furniture it needs to comply with fire safety regulations (look out for the manufacturer's label).

10) Legionnaires disease - a simple risk assessment should suffice for most residential properties along with a few preventative actions (such as checking for ‘dead-legs’, de-scaling shower-heads and flushing through water systems).

Developer for Tangmere site CHICHESTER District Council is looking for a development partner, as part of plans to introduce around 1,000 new homes in Tangmere.

The site in Tangmere was identified as one of the strategic development locations under Chichester District Council’s Local Plan to deliver housing to the area.

The district council is working closely with Tangmere Parish Council on this project and is using the parish council’s Neighbourhood Plan to help shape the new development. Plans include introducing a new school; a small retail hub; open spaces; and a cycle path connecting to Chichester. The aim is to unite the existing village with the new development by placing the school and the shopping hub in the centre of the two areas.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning at Chichester District Council said: “This development will provide vital housing, helping to keep people local. It is important that we plan and identify where housing will go, because if we don’t do this there is the risk that developers will directly

submit planning applications and local people will have no control over it.

"By the time this development is completed, around £2 million will go to Tangmere Parish Council to help support and enhance the local community. This is why the Local Plan and Tangmere’s Neighbourhood Plan are so important.

“Housing is so desperately needed in our area and so this is an important site. Thirty per cent of the development will be made up of affordable housing."

Tangmere Parish Council Chairman, Andrew Irwin, says “We have taken difficult decisions when discussing the plans for the strategic site to the West of Tangmere, and recognise the conflicting needs for housing in the district and the desire to protect green fields.

“The Parish Council supports the decision of Chichester District Council to press ahead with the Developer selection, and looks forward to being closely involved in the process of delivering the vision that the community expressed in the Neighbourhood Plan.”

Trusted volunteers at canal VOLUNTEERS at the Chichester Ship Canal Trust are being thanked for all their hard work during Volunteers Week.

The canal is a much loved and valued asset of Chichester, offering a wide range of opportunities for recreation and relaxation on and off the water.

Last year, the trust carried more than 16,000 passengers on its popular boat trips and served 30,000-plus hot drinks at the café.

However, many visitors and residents may not realise that the canal is almost entirely volunteer-run, relying on 165 helpers throughout the year.

The volunteers take on an extraordinary range of activities at the canal, including canal weeding, towpath maintenance, serving refreshments on boat trips, being a skipper, archiving historic photos and hosting school parties.

Over the past year, the volunteers have

taken over 2,300 passengers on their ever-popular Father Christmas boat trip, hosted five different Father Christmas’s, sold over 2,300 row boat hires and canoe permits, and run over 1,000 boat trips.

Trust chairman Ian Milton said: "We are enormously grateful to our volunteers who give their time to help make the canal the very special place it is, enjoyed by so many residents and visitors every year.

"We know from the feedback we receive how much their contribution is appreciated, and we simply couldn’t operate without them. Volunteers Week is a perfect opportunity to recognise their commitment and for us to say a huge thank you."

` Reducing plastic A CITY councillor is asking residents if they can change the way they shop and reduce the amount of plastic they use?

The challenge is being taken up at this week's Eco Drop-In taking place tomorrow from 3pm to 5pm in Muchos Nachos at the Crown, Whyke Road.

Sarah Sharp, Chichester's Green councillor, will be encouraging residents to re-use containers for washing up liquid, fabric conditioner, laundry liquid and shampoo and conditioner. The Eco Drop-In will also see volunteers coming together to mend broken items and clothing as well as the firm favourite of a clothes swap in the pub.

Cllr Sharp said "Horsham, Portsmouth and many other cities have Repair and Re-fill Cafés, we thought it was time Chichester joined in. The pub is becoming a real community hub with lots of new activities taking place in its function room. We can't promise to mend every item, as that will depend on the skills of our volunteers, but it is a first step to challenging our throw-away society".

A spring in step at open day

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THOUSANDS of pounds were raised when visitors attended the Spring Fever Open day at Brent Lodge Animal Hospital over the weekend.

Guests were able to enjoy the sight of the rescued animals at the Sidlesham hospital, including the baby animals, as featured in last week's Chichester Post.

There were special cameras set up in an education hut showing the work of the hospital as well as a camera tracking the fox cubs currently residing in the hospital.

Visitors also managed to see some of the work which is currently underway for the new extension, including several new bird enclosures where existing residents at the hospital will be moved to.

There were plenty of stalls set up over the weekend selling all sorts from plants, bric-a-brac and cakes, all raising money for the wildlife hospital.

Brent Lodge manager, Emma Pink said: "Thank you to all of the visitors who came to see us last weekend at our Spring Fever Open Weekend.

"The atmosphere was great and it was so nice to see so many people of all ages gathered together who share a passion for wildlife welfare.

"The sun was shinning all weekend which did wonders for our ice cream sales. The other stalls were busy and buzzing throughout the day too.

"With thanks especially to our devoted volunteers, who all helped make the event such a success. We really couldn't do it without them, also to the team from a local Santander branch who came

down to lend a hand, who will also boost our total an extra £2,500 as part of their community match funding scheme, raising our weekend total to an amazing £8,500.

"All of these funds will contribute towards care and treatment to the hundreds of wildlife patients we have lodging with us. With baby season in full swing, we are grateful of the support of donations and food.

"It was especially nice to be able to show off our new outside bird of prey enclosures, which were partly funded by supporter donations.

"With future plans to redevelop the hospital site over the next couple of years, we are looking forward to sharing more enclosures areas that will benefit the wildlife in our temporary care."

Park becomes a wonderland ALICE in Wonderland has moved into a Bognor Regis park.

THe famous character by Lewis Carroll has taken up residence in Hotham Park in the form of a giant wooden sculpture.

She has been joined by her companions, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts to complete a trail of the skilfully-created oak features in the popular open space.

THe trio were brought to life by chainsaw sculptor Simon Groves thanks to the success of the Hotham Park Heritage Trust's country fairs.

THe sculptures were unveiled on Sunday - and Alice fan Mollie Lane, six, gave them her approval.

Dressed as the Queen of Hearts, she said: "I like stories. I have read them quite a lot of times and I like the sculptures. I like everything about them."

She and her family travelled from their Bosham home for the unveiling on one of their regular visits to the park.

Alice was revealed by Arun District Council chairman, Cllr Alan Gammon. He told the some 100 people at the ceremony: "I am very pleased to be carrying out this unveiling.

"Many years ago when my children were knee-high we got an awful lot of enjoyment out of this park - and there is much more here now than there was then.

"It's nice to know you are enjoying the park even more than we did."

THe trust was founded in 1998 to protect the park's heritage for future generations in partnership with Arun.

To date, the trust's volunteers have

contributed £100,000 towards improving the amenities in the park.

THe three new sculptures are the latest of these projects and join the Mad Hatter's Table unveiled at Easter 2017.

Deborah Northcott, the chairman of the trust, said: "THis is the final stage of our Alice in Wonderland trail, which was the product of the past two country fairs, having been identified three fairs ago by children as their preferred choice.

"THey add a bit of interest to the park.

THey are something that draws the eye to bring people to the park."

THe new sculptures cost £9,500 in all to add to the £9,000 for the Mad Hatter's Table from the profits of the 2016 and 2017 country fairs.

Sculptor Simon Groves said : "I am really pleased with the sculptures. It's not everyday I get to do work like this.

"It was one of most unusual projects. It's good they are fictional characters because that gives me some leeway rather than being tied down to real life."

He spent ten days creating Alice, five days on the White Rabbit and seven on the Queen of Hearts. Alice stands 8ft tall and weighs 1.3 tons, while her companions are about 5ft 6ins and weigh just under a ton.

THey are all created from drawings on the raw wood on which Simon uses chainsaws, from 4ft diameter downwards, to create front and side profiles. He puts them together and adds the details.

THe Suzanne Hill School of Dancing and THe Bard and the Troubadour THeatre Company also entertained those present.

ORGANISERS of a special school reunion in Chichester have been encouraged by the initial response.

THe event is being held on October 20 to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of Chichester High School for Boys. It will take place at the current school.

Clive Sayer said there had been a great response to the announcement of the occasion.

"However, the Old Cicestrians are still keen to contact more former students and staff whether they left last year or 60-plus years ago.

"Even if someone can't make it on October 20, their memories - and any photos, videos or memorabilia they can lend - would be really appreciated," he said.

AN EXTRA £540,000 is to be spent

by West Sussex County Council tackling potholes.

THe funding is on top of the extra staffing announced last month, which has helped to repair 11,000 potholes so far this year.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "THe extra £540,000 is great news and further proof of just how seriously we take the pothole problem in West Sussex and that we have listened to residents and how important they feel this issue is."

GENEROUS Bognor Regis women’s darts players have donated thousands of pounds to charity.

THe members of the town’s winter darts league marked its 50th anniversary with the bumper help for two good causes.

THe £1,000 donations to both Tyler’s Trust and Ashley Place were presented at the league’s annual meeting last week.

Tyler’s Trust was set up in 2010 by Barnham resident Tyler Murphy, then aged 12, to provide treats for young hospital patients and was inspired by his experience having treatment for a brain tumour.

His mother, Janice Ellis, told the darts players: “Tyler would like to say a huge thank you to everyone of you.

“His main message about his charity is that it will keep going. It will not get bigger geographically but we are going to do more and more for local families who have terminally ill children.

“THey really need people rooting for them and that’s what Tyler’s Trust does.”

Ashley Place in Bognor Regis is run by the Livability charity for 16 residents with physical and intellectual disabilities. It will put the money towards a new minibus for them.

One of the residents, Claire Needs, said: “THe money that everybody has raised for us will make a massive difference.

“It will give us reliable transport for everyday things like doctors’ appointments and hospital appointments.

"It also makes it a lot easier for things like family visits and holidays and things like that.”

Darts league celebrations GOLDEN touches celebrated a special occasion for women’s darts players in Bognor Regis.

THe trophies presented at the 50th anniversary presentation night of the Bognor Regis Ladies Darts League were covered in gold dust and the glasses awarded to many of the individual winners were engraved with gold writing.

THe league’s chairman, Lyndsay Steege, said: “THe girls have kept the league going for 50 years and the fact the league is very much a family. It’s all about going out with the girls and having a laugh.

“We have lost a few pubs over the years but we have amalgamated the teams and kept them going.

“We could do with more younger players. Some teams are down to the bare minimum of six players.

“THe men’s leagues don’t seem to have a problem with that but men’s darts gets a lot more publicity than we do. We don’t get a mention at all.”

THe presentation night took place in the Riverside Caravan Centre’s ballroom last week. A host of awards were lined up for the winners from the 180 guests present. THe tables had decorations which marked the 50 years the league has been playing on Monday nights.

THere are 24 teams, down from 32, as the number of pubs has shrunk. THey are split into three divisions rather than the original two.

Cheers and applause greeted the winners as they received the rewards for their skills in the league season from last September. Among them was 98-yearold Rene Arnold who has a certificate

She turns out weekly with the Newtown Sports and Social Club’s ‘D’ team. She said: “I’ve been playing for about 31 years in the league and it’s some 40 years since I started playing darts.

“It’s a night out with the girls and I enjoy them every week.”

One of her team-mates, Linda Burley, who won the Division Two indidivual’s cup, said: “We worked in a factory, Tam Transformers in Durban Road, and that’s how we got Rene started in the league.

“My mum and dad had a dartboard when I was about ten and I used to play on it.

"I started playing properly when I was

18 and I’m now 52. I enjoy going out each week and having a bit of fun.

“We get on well. I want to be playing darts when I’m 98 like Rene.”

THe trophies were presented by popular top darts player Scott Mitchell.

THe British Darts Organisation number three ranked player made his second appearance at the event after being the special guest in 2016.

“I’ve really enjoyed coming back. You are the best presentation night I have done,” he said. “It’s down to you girls.

THis league is going to keep going for another 50 years in my opinion.

"A league is only as good as the people who run it and you ladies are absolutely amazing.”

HISTORICAL fiction writer Rosemary Noble is hosting a talk on crime writing by authors around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Bognor Regis-based Rosemary will be joined by three other authors at the event next Wednesday.

Michael Parker and Helen Christmas - both from Bognor Regis - and Sidlesham-based Isabella Muir will be appearing at Writing Crime for Fun and Profit.

THis is taking place at 7.30pm at THe Steam Packet in River Road, Littlehampton.

Rosemary said: "Come and listen to these popular authors talk about how they got into crime writing and listen to passages from their books."

Also hosting the evening will be humorous author Patricia Feinberg Stoner, who is based in Rustington.

All five authors are members of the CHINDI association of independent authors.

THe event is a forerunner to four events being held for the July Littlehampton Arts Festival

by CHINDI. THese are a crime writer's panel, a panel about selfpublishing, a ghost walk and a quiz.

` Cycle stolen A SCOTT Park aluminium mountain bike has been stolen from a shed in Crimsham Road in North Bersted.

THe Scott Parker aluminium bike was taken overnight on May 23. It had a black bottle cage with 'SWE' written on it, two 'Hope' stickers close to its seat and a 'Hope' light bracket fixed to the handlebars.

THe frame was grey with highlights in bright green.

Interest rates get pupils interested BUSINESS students could bank on the economic facts they were given at a new workshop at Felpham Community College.

Florence Hubert, the deputy agent for the Bank of England in central southern England, covered interest rates, inflation and other matters of national importance.

She explained to the Year 10 GCSE business and Year 12 A-level business students about the central role played by the Bank in economic matters.

She said: "Students had prepared the session with their teachers. THis made for a great session, with lots of interaction and team work, discussing how a change in interest rates affects us in our daily lives."

Her visit was part of a new education programme launched by the Bank.

College curriculum leader for business and vocational studies Paul Darbyshire said: "THe event was a big success and added to student's knowledge of real life economic and banking situations."

Jade Leeson, a Year 10 business student who attended the workshop, said: "THe workshop was really interesting as the lady running it gave us lots of examples of what the Bank of England is involved in.

"Looking at interest rates and profit and loss was all relevant to what we are learning in class and it was good to be given more examples and practise how things work out."

RAIL passengers have welcomed the changes to their train times for Chichester and Bognor Regis.

THe wholesale changes brought in by Southern Railway have brought benefits, particularly for those commuting to London.

THe previous one return service from Bognor Regis to London Bridge each weekday and the single one-way only from Chichester have been replaced by two return services from both stations an hour apart on Mondays to Fridays.

Chichester city councillor and secretary and treasurer for West Sussex Rail Users' Association, Trevor Tupper,

said: "Our members are pleased to see these improvements. As for performance, the new timetable is working well.

"I have been out on Southern on most days this week and every train has been on time.

"Looking at the overall picture, every train timetabled for Chichester ran as planned and very few were more than five minutes late.

"THis is a much improved performance to that experienced before and we hope it will continue."

For the past 20 years, West Sussex Rail Users Association had been pressing

for improvements in the connection with London Bridge as an alternative to London Victoria.

THere have been a few other changes to the services that affect some students at the high school and the college in Chichester.

THese have added a few minutes to some journey times, but have reduced others.

THe Sunday service to London has changed from Chichester. It will now be routed via Horsham and the Bognor Regis service rather than Worthing.

THis should mean the trains were less crowded, Mr Tupper added.

No need to feel anxious about being depressed I HAVE had such a good response to the talk about anxiety, stress, fatigue and depression that I am delivering next Monday at ‘Everyone active’ (Westgate leisure centre, in Chichester), 6pm9pm, with two other experts in their field.

Steve Neale is a psychologist and hypnotherapist and has had years of experience on this subject.

I talk with him at many corporate events all over the world, and as I mentioned before it is very rare that he is in Chichester. It’s a massive treat that he is giving up his time to be here, and talking about such important information that can really save and change lives.

Jemima Eames is our EFT expert (emotional freedom technique) who is going to be sharing some amazing tools and techniques on how to

combat such feelings of anxiety and depression, and teaching us how to break down old habits and barriers that are controlling lives.

I, of course, will be talking about how to support the physical body through times of stress, depression and fatigue and, hopefully, with the three of us combined, it will be a powerful event that will give everyone attending some life changing information to go home with.

Anxiety and depression can happen for many different reasons, but the word 'burnout’ is often something I use in my clinics almost daily. I would class this as extreme exhaustion because somebody lives long-term in a way, which is fundamentally against his or her nature. THe real ‘treatment’ of burnout in the medical sense of the word is therefore often combined with a fundamental insight and changes in behaviour helping the person live life as they really wish to live it. THey learn to align their treatment with their deeper fundamental ‘existential’ life project.

THe person answers the question 'What do I

want?' for themselves and then lives accordingly. To some extent one could see burnout as an extremely strong ‘alarm signal’ which the body and mind give us to say: 'Stop and change your life, because if you continue this way, you may die'!

So if you see it from that angle, burnout is a ‘friend’, warning us it is high time to make a change in life.

Stress is, in itself, something positive in nature.

Stress helps us respond quickly and adequately in life-threatening situations so that we can survive. If a tiger plans to eat you, stress will help you to flee more quickly or to fight for your life.

Acute stress at certain points during a week or month is a good thing. When the ‘triggers’, which cause stress, happen too frequently (e.g. every text message, phone call, e-mail, communication which can focus our attention on something negative) our stress system becomes exhausted and inefficient.

If stress is chronic, we end up in a vicious cycle of negativity and exhaustion, and can lead to

depression, anxiety or fatigue.

Depression helps us to do less, to take a break.

Anxiety is the typical feeling which helps us create a distance from something, which instils fear in us. Fatigue, too, makes us slow down. At least it does, when we listen to our body and do not force ourselves through it.

Our Western work ethic does however make it so that we force ourselves through this and no longer listen to these useful (but sometimes unclear) signals. We use willpower, caffeine, nicotine or pills to force ourselves to go on, and if we continue with this for a long enough period of time, we are punished by the real, medical burnout.

THe same mechanism, which caused a chronic overproduction of cortisol and adrenalin, unfortunately also is responsible for our immune system, our response to infections and our general immunity. After long-term overloading of this system, it becomes deregulated and we are more vulnerable to outside attacks by, for example, bacteria, viruses or cancer cells. Even worse: this deregulation even makes it so that we start attacking ourselves. Internal infection mechanisms could for example start attacking our vascular walls, causing arteriosclerosis. THis can lead to heart attacks, brain damage, and many other health problems.

So, this is in fact a serious problem that we need to address in our society. It’s extremely important to keep your physical and mental health on track in order to live the life you really want.

Life is for thriving… not just surviving.

I'VE BEEN up at Lords this week for my ritual dose of humiliation as the English fellows seemed to capitulate and appeared to be brandishing a form of willow that does not always connect with the ball!

So let us concentrate on wine instead and off I duly headed to my local Aldi Chichester store in search of some competitively-priced tipple.

In terms of white wines, for an outlay of just £4.79, I was able to procure a Chardonnay Pays D'Oc which turned out to be crispy and fresh with juicy white fruit, had a slightly creamy texture and overall was light and refreshing - a good buy at this price.

My next selection, for an extra twenty

pence expended, was that of a Hardy's Chapter and Verse Chardonnay and you may be surprised to know that a certain THomas Hardy (I thought he was busy being rather literary, but that is undoubtedly another story) set sail from Devon in 1850 for a new life in Australia buying his first vineyard three years later.

THis wine is a nice soft Chardonnay with pineapple and citrus flavours with a creamy finish and is eminently quaffable! My final white wine selection, for a lofty price of £6.29, was that of a 2017 Exquisite Collection Picpoul De Pinet, a wine which has rightly become flavour of the month, and this one proved to be crispy and dry, herby and lemony and did not lack texture - an ideal accompaniment to shellfish or just enjoyed on its own!

For just £10.99, the Monsigny Brut Champagne continues to exceed all expectations - give it a go at this enticing price!

In terms of red wines , I opted for three under five pounds and one scaling the heights at £5 69. Amazingly, the 2016 Cuvée Réserve Côtes Du Rhône Villages, for a meagre outlay of £4.29, is a veritable gem being soft with crunchy fruit and

ripe tannins and one it is worth aerating for a while! For £4.99, the organic 2016 Toro Loco Superior failed to disappoint being of eastern Spanish provenance and the crazy bull title gives a hint as to the earthiness and juicy nature of this

most quaffable of wines.

For the same price, the 2016 Animus Douro made from port grapes in downtown Portugal is pleasingly smooth and fruity and totally belies its pecuniary value. It is soft and rond en bouche with rich black fruit to the fore and a hint of

spice and one to savour, in my humble opinion.

My final selection of a 2013 Antiguo Barrel Aged Red oozed red fruit flavours along with tobacco and cigar box aromas and oak spices and would pair well with lamb. Te veo pronto!

WITH the two tone cedar shingles complete, and the gabion stone walling freshly washed, the new Aldingbourne Trust building in the Aldingbourne Community Centre looked stunning in the early summer sun.

Inside, the march towards completion is very evident with painters, decorators and plumbers hard at work and electricians installing the last of the lighting units.

THere is a reassuring hum from the plant room as the mechanical systems have all been commissioned and final commissioning of the electrical systems are well underway.

THe building passed its pressure test last month with flying colours.

With the block paving complete at the front of the building, the road brush arrives next week in preparation for Tarmacking of the entrance road.

To make sure the floors are completely even a latex selflevelling compound (sometimes called latex screed or mortar) helps smooth over areas that are not level.

THis is usually done before painting, tiling, or carpeting a subfloor. A self-levelling floor screeding compound contains latex because it has the flexibility to move evenly without cracking.

Once it is prepared, mixed and poured it will flatten out across the uneven floor and naturally self-level because of gravity‌with a little help!

Despite its name the compound is not entirely self-levelling as the surface tension can restrict spread.

To overcome this, the mixture is pushed around the floor with a trowel and spikey roller and the compound will gradually run down any slopes to form its own level in the hollows. Work can continue with the project with little disruption as latex only takes a day to dry.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development.

A NEW chief executive has been appointed to a charity which helps homeless people in the Chichester and Arun districts.

Hilary Bartle will lead Stonepillow just as work on its new hostel in Bognor Regis nears its completion.

Hilary, pictured above, said: "I feel very privileged to be part of Stonepillow.

"It reflects the core values and principles I hold by delivering high-quality services which empower and enable those who are homeless or vulnerably housed to achieve independence and wellbeing.

"I am excited about taking on the role of chief executive with Stonepillow at a time of such positive change and strengthening the strategic working with our statutory, voluntary and corporate partners in order to deliver a broader range of effective and proactive services for our clients."

Hilary brings a huge range of knowledge and experience

LEADING Bognor Regis Rotarian David Cousins has received recognition for his community work.

Mr Cousins is the president of the Rotary Club of Bognor Regis and has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. THe award is made to a person for outstanding service to their community over many years.

Club spokesman David Stemp said: "THe presentation was made at a dinner at Bognor Regis Golf Club made

She has spent 35 years delivering, commissioning and strategically planning housing, homelessness and housing-related support services.

One of her previous roles was in Whitehall as the deputy director of the government's Supporting People programme where she was responsible for its implementation.

She has also run a consultancy business which worked across the country with a range of statutory and voluntary sector agencies.

Stonepillow provides the chance for its clients to recover from their lives on the streets. It focuses on the key areas of health, housing and work.

THe support is available all year to the charity's 95 clients in its accommodation on any given evening.

THe aim is to enable them to find independent accommodation they can call home.

VOLUNTEERS around Bognor Regis and Chichester have been thanked for the contributions they make to their communities.

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester (VAAC) says today's start of national Volunteers' Week is the ideal chance to celebrate the helpers for the skills and effort they make to their chosen good causes.

VAAC member June Caffyn, Littlehampton Shopmobility's manager, said: "At present we have five volunteers. THey are all wonderful. THey are all amazing and hard workers and I am grateful for all they do to help our charity."

Dr Phil Hewitt, the chairman of the Festival of Chichester, said: "We are celebrating our sixth festival this year...but there is a huge amount of work behind it and we are completely and utterly reliant on the goodwill, skills, time and enthusiasm of volunteers."

THis year's theme of Volunteers' Week is 'volunteering for all' and VAAC wants to highlight the wide variety of roles that are available in its area to prove there is something for everyone.

Among them is that of dormouse hunter. THe dedicated helpers who carry out this work for the Sussex Wildlife Trust compile the necessary data which is vital to ensuring the species continues to thrive in West Dean Woods.

Two of the hunters are Maria and Rodney Wildman, pictured below. THey monitor the animals monthly from March to November.

Maria said: "During checks, the dormice are carefully taken from the boxes, given a quick health and sex check and weighed before being returned to their boxes.

"Other than birds and dormice, we may also find shrews, bats, hornets and the far more aggressive tree bumblebees in our boxes. But they all deserve their place in their natural environments, so we do not unnecessarily disturb them.

"Finding a dormouse in a box is still a delight and being able to hold one in your hand a privilege especially if still in torpor and audibly snoring."

Other organisations which have paid tribute to volunteers include Chichester Ship Canal Trust, Petworth Vision Community Interest Company and the Snak Shak.

A COLOURFUL coach trip was enjoyed by Donnington Gardening Club's members to Exbury Gardens in Hampshire.

THe explosion of colours of the azaleas and rhododendrons were an assault on the senses and almost too much for the visitors to take in.

Club press officer Lawrence Holloway said: "Indeed, the bright orange azaleas threatened to burst into flames at any moment. Glades of giant trees, including mighty oaks with their new, clean and fresh leaves, look magical with their carpets of colourful azaleas, all helped by the brilliant blue sky above and bluebells below.

"Several not so agile members enjoyed buggy rides along the forest tracks and others rode in the narrow-gauge steam train, all accompanied by spring songs of woodland birds - song thrush, blackcap and blackbird."

THe visitors were delighted by the many butterflies on the wing in the woodland glades, together with large red damselflies and other dragonflies over the ponds and along the clear-flowing streams. THe day was rounded off nicely when the members were delighted by the many new foals on their return journey through the New Forest.

THe club's next meeting is at 7.30pm tonight in Donnington Parish Hall. Mary Holliday-Bishop will be the guest speaker on the subject of The Plant Hunters: Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook.

Unearthing history in Roman cemeteries By staff at the Novium Museum THE burial practices of the people of Roman Chichester have been discovered by excavating some of their cemeteries. There were various customs and practices at burial, and ceremonies were also held at various times after the death.

By Roman law, burials had to be outside the town’s limits, as burial within the religious boundary of a Roman city was forbidden. In Chichester, cemeteries have been found near the major roads outside the north, east and west gates. The only exception to this was very young infants under 40 days old. These infants were often buried in or near the house although it is unclear whether this was to save on burial expenses for a small child, or in order to keep a child close to the heart of the family.

There were two ways of burying the dead and the preferred method changed over the Roman period. Cremating the body and then burying the ashes in a pot was the usual way of burial at the beginning of the Roman period in Britain. Later, after AD 200, the usual practice was to place the body in a grave - this is known as inhumation.

The largest and earliest cemetery to have been discovered from Roman Chichester was on the north side of St Pancras. Out of 326 burials there all were cremations, except

for nine inhumations. The cremated bone was usually placed in a pot and buried. The cremation urn may sometimes have been placed inside a wooden box, or buried in a hole lined with roof tiles.

Many of the burials at this cemetery had objects put in the ground with the cremation urn. The most usual type of objects were brooches, hair pins, needles and pots, including oil lamps. Some of these items seem to have been broken before burial, but it is not clear if this had been done deliberately as part of the ritual. Some of the pots were obviously 'seconds' and others were broken, suggesting that perhaps perfect items were too useful to the living to be buried.

Some burials included plates, bowls or cups with bones from mutton, chicken or shellfish. This has been interpreted as the remains of a graveside meal. Flagons – a kind of container for wine - were found in some burials and were often broken at the neck. t has been suggested that the flagon neck was left sticking out of the ground so that offerings of wine could be given to the deceased at the graveside ceremonies. These offerings are known as ‘libations’ and were often made as part of significant anniversaries or ceremonies, such as the birthday of the dead or during major festivals. Libations could be

The area of Westgate was left outside the defended area when the town walls were built. At some later time, after about 275AD, the area was used as a cemetery. The inhumations discovered by archaeologists had almost no objects or ‘grave goods’.

Two of the burials were in lead-lined coffins, which would have been much more expensive than wooden coffins, one of which is on display in the Novium Museum’s first floor gallery. When the coffins were discovered in the 1980s, the wood surround had rotted away over the years, and the lead lining had been crushed by the earth above it. The coffin was only 6 inches tall when found, and had to be prised open, leaving an impression of the bones inside on the lid.

The custom of burial without grave goods - and graves on an east-west orientation used to be used as evidence for Christianity.

However, archaeological evidence has shown that these customs were employed

throughout the Empire by non-Christians from the AD 260s, and that Christians were using the same customs.

A cemetery discovered at Eastgate had only inhumations. A clue to the date of this cemetery was that there were almost no objects placed in the graves, which suggested they were late Roman. There were 14 inhumations with two of the bodies apparently having been buried in quicklime, perhaps to try to preserve the body or as a sign of some form of belief that it might provide protection against disease. The cemetery outside the north gate is less well known, but seems to have contained both cremations and inhumations.

There are only three known tombstones from Roman Chichester, and all were found reused in the foundations of bastion towers, an outward projecting structure found on the Roman city walls. It is likely that most of the monuments from the cemeteries suffered the same fate.

Volunteers must be 18 years and over, be prepared to have a DBS check and be empathetic to the needs of others.

Tone Zone's sweet 16 push Chi's Baker all the way in the Trundle HUNDREDS of runners conquered Trundle Hill as the annual 10k run up and down the landmark outside Chichester delivered a thrilling evening of off-road running.

In total 481 people took part in the scenic run which is organised by Chichester Runners and forms part of the West Sussex Fun Run League.

THere was joy on home turf for Chi's own James Baker who crossed the finish line in 36 minutes 29 seconds to take first place.

It was the start of a good evening for Chichester Runners, who took 128 points from the race to seal victory for the club.

Special mention must go to Graham Timson (40:27 - third overall), Tom Le Lievre (41:07 - fourth overall) and Emma Hughes (47:38 - third, women’s) who helped amass an excellent team tally.

THere was also a good display from the cohort from Bognor Tone Zone Runners Club. Just three days after the record-breaking Bognor 10k, 16 members crossed the finish line.

Simon Gill finished in third place overall with a very quick time of 37:38, followed by Jack Penfold with 43:49 (32nd overall). Crossing the line shortly after was Sean Power in 45:48

while Simon Hunt, Duncan Stephenson-Gill and Michael Manwill all ran sub 50 minutes.

Jess THomson and Louisa Proctor had a battle towards the end of the race, resulting in an exciting sprint finish for the spectators.

Sarah Santer crossed the line just after an hour for the club while Nicky King and Debi Haddleton also performed admirably.

At the other end of the county were Grace and Derek Natoli, competing in Edinburgh.

Derek took to the half marathon course and finished in just under two hours while Grace did the full 26 miles, falling in love with city as she went, eventually finishing in 4:31.

Elsewhere, marathon man Paul Coe, who’s aiming to run 100 marathons before the end of October, took on the near double marathon known as the North Downs Way 50.

Paul said “After 79 marathons, this was certainly the toughest event I have ever ran.

Nearly 6,000ft of climbing over 50 miles takes its toll in the latter stages, but overall I was very pleased to complete it, 10 hours 55 minutes was a lot better than I was expecting”.

THe following week Coe ran his 80th marathon along the THames, having recovered well and finishing in 4:14.

Goodwood set for Three Friday Nights

GOODWOOD is all set for the first of their THree Friday Nights - when top-class horseracing meets DJ sets from some of the most famous acts in the world.

THe racecourse just outside Chichester will welcome thousands of people to the eighth version of its popular evening meets.

Tonight, the racing will be followed by a sell-out set from UK act Rudimental. THat will be followed by Example + DJ Wire, who will take to the decks next week (June 8) while Steve Aoki will bring the party to an almighty crescendo on Friday June 15.

All eyes will be on the Sussex course, though, as the sport still reels from the scenes which were captured on camera last month. Footage showed up to 50 people taking part in a brawl during the meeting, which included one man being kicked in the head.

Following a review, officials have stepped up security, introduced restrictions on the drinking of alcohol and agreed to an increased police presence.

THese steps seemed to have paid off as Goodwood experienced an excellent three days of racing last weekend at the Festival of Food meeting.

Some of the best racing came on the Saturday when Society Power produced one of the performances of the season to win the Netbet Sport Handicap Stakes (2.30pm).

With more rivals ahead of him than behind him at the half-way point of the seven-furlong prize, the William Haggas-trained 5/2 shot managed to weave a path through his rivals under Andrea Atzeni, before getting up on the line to deny Emaraaty by a short head.

In the feature race of the day, the Sir Michael Stoute trained Mirage Dancer took the mileand-a-half Netbet Android to win for the first time since 2016.

Other winners on the Saturday include First Sitting (6-1), the Mark Johnston trained Natalie's Joy (4-1), a 20-1 shot for Amanda Perett called Platitude, Englishman under Liam Keniry (5-1) and Bella Ragazza (10-1).

PostSport TRAMPOLINING: Bognor-based Dragonflyers keep on bouncing to new heights after they won their eighth national medal in less than a month.

THe club, which is based at THe Regis School, have collected a range of awards on a regional and UK level this season.

THe success continued in Cardiff as six Flyers brought home a further three medals after taking on trampolinists from all over the UK at the league event.

THe pairing of Libby Morton and Lucy Hijmans gained an amazing third place in the 9/14 years open synchro against male, female and mixed competitors.

Judges were impressed with their incredible timing and fabulous form in awarding them with a podium position.

It also meant they gained essential points towards a place at finals in Sheffield in November.

Sofija Kalnicenko yet again medalled at another national event making this her fourth competition in a row where she has returned with silverware.

THis time round Sofia took silver in the very top level league 1 13/14 years contest. Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Sofia has been successful across every national event performance pathway, English qualifiers and league, proving a force to reckon with."

Izzy Hauxwell also finalled on the day taking a fantastic seventh position at league 1 15/16 years. Hauxwell recently medalled at English qualifiers Coach O'Leary was also full of praise for Rosie Budge, who completed her double full for the first time. Judges deemed her 6.3 difficulty worthy of 12th place at league 2 13/14 years with an incredible score of 81.650.

Julie Morton took off her judging blazer, put down her team manager clip board and made her first steps on the national scene as a coach with William Foden who finished an excellent 16th in the male 13/14 years.

O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are extremely proud of all six performers who just keep on excelling. Eight national medals in under one month is an excellent return."

THe club practises at THe Regis School most evenings with a variety of classes running through the week.

All ages and abilities are welcome to come along. Recreational spaces are available on Mondays between 4.30pm and 5.30pm and 5.30pm and 6.30pm from June 5.

Trials for the squad are also available for those age seven and upwards.

BOWLS: Bognor Ladies suffered a disappointing start in the newly sponsored Game, Set and Match league after losing to newly promoted Worthing Pavilion.

Bognor got off to a good start but their opponents soon found the green. Bognor won on one rink but lost on overall shot difference scoring two league points to Worthing Pavilion’s four. In the friendly rink, it was a close game with Worthing Pavilion coming out the winners by one shot.

Bognor men faced a strong County Vice Patrons team and, unfortunately, lost on all rinks.

In the West Sussex Bowls League Division One, Bognor men’s A team played Worthing A in the league and came away with six points having won on two rinks and a better overall shot advantage. THe best performances came from M Conolly, D Parker, G Stevens, A. Richardson who won 24-8; and K. Hellyer, P. Lichfield, N. Hatfield, J Whitfield who won 30-13.

Next up for Bognor A is a trip to Tarring Priory tomorrow while in Division Two Pagham host East Preston A. Both matches start at 2pm.

Bognor's unbeaten streak is on the line at Three Bridges

Pearce up for Selsey project NEW Selsey manager Daren Pearce says he is excited by the challenge ahead as he looks to steer the Blues back into the SCFL Premier.

With a talented young squad, an excellent pitch and good facilities, there is a real sense of optimism around the Bunn Leisure Stadium.

Now, Pearce, who has been drafted in after stepping down from nearby Sidlesham, is being tasked with bringing the good days back to Selsey.

He will succeed Steve Bailey who resigned from the club after four and half years earlier this month, claiming that he and chairman David Lee were no longer in agreement on the future of the club.

Pearce, who used to play for the Blues, said the aim was for the club to progress in the coming year.

He said: "I played at Selsey a few years ago under Danny Hinshelwood.

"Dave Lee the chairman was there at the time too and everyone around the club was friendly and welcoming.

"THose things stay with you so, when Dave heard I was stepping down at Sidlesham, he stepped in quite quickly.

"THe club is organised,

well-run, it has got youth development through the ages and they have been around the county league a while.

When you get the chance to move, sometimes you know it's right to make that move."

Pearce has wasted no time in building a team for next season.

Last year's player of the season Ryan Morey has already signed for next year.

A raft of new faces have joined as well - with goalkeeper Connor Kelly, defender Dale Hayes, Tom Kelly, Ryan Hillier, Callum Dowdell and Bradley HigginsPearce all following the new manager from Sidlesham.

THe cohort who have made the short trip down B2145 will not have to wait long to face their former side - with it being confirmed the Sids will take their place in SCFL Division One next season after finishing second in the league below last year.

Pearce said: "Myself and Andy Bell said we would like to get them back to where they should be. We did what we said we would but was through a lot of hard work from a lot of people behind the scenes."

BOGNOR Regis CC will be looking to make it four games unbeaten when they head to inform THree Bridges tomorrow.

Ryan Maskell's side have performed well in the opening month of the Sussex Division Two campaign, losing just one of their opening four fixtures.

THat good form continued last weekend when they chalked up a convincing 135-run over Ansty at THe Regis Oval.

Second-placed Bognor are sure to be in for a tougher task tomorrow when they travel to fourth-placed THree Bridges tomorrow (12.30pm) when they face a side who are yet to lose this campaign.

Maskell will be looking to lead from the front once again. After being put into bat by Ansty, the skipper entered the field with his side at 27-2.

But Maskell (42) put on 83 for the third wicket with opener Josh Seward (37) to take Bognor over the 100 mark. Combined with a late salvo from Tom Woolnough (43) the home team reached 207-7 from their 45 overs.

Batting woes haunt Middleton

MIDDLETON CC will be hoping to improve on their batting woes as the club's difficult start to the Sussex Premier season continues.

Sean Heather's side slumped to bottom of the table after being crushed by 147 runs at Brighton & Hove last weekend.

Next up for Middleton is a trip to Preston Nomads tomorrow (12pm), where the Sea Lane side hope that a match on one of the finest batting tracks in the county will trigger a revival in fortunes.

THe struggle for runs is really hampering Middleton's campaign so far. After four

matches, they have collected just six batting points, the second lowest in the division after Nomads.

THis poor form with the bat continued last weekend when, after restricting Brighton & Hove to 235 for 9 (Craig Fowle 3-26), Middleton could only amass 88 in reply.

Only four players reached double figures in the total with number nine Brandon Hanley top-scoring with 19.

THe result puts Heather's side bottom.

But with just 13 points separating them and Eastbourne in fourth, Middleton know that a

In Division Two, Chichester Priory Park will be looking to win their first match in four when they welcome third-place Haywards Heath to Goodwood tomorrow (12.30pm).

Chi have fallen off the pace in recent weeks, with a 110-run loss to leaders Mayfield last weekend seeing them lose valuable ground on the leading pack.

After winning the toss and electing to field, skipper Matthew Geffen led from the front taking 3 for 26 in his nine overs. But a 92-run stand for the sixth wicket took the game away for Chi and saw Mayfield register 220-7 in their 45 overs.

In reply, Geffen's team struggled to get to grips with the home side's opening bowler Robert Sharma (6-40).

Only wicketkeeper Morgan Hopkins (33*) showed any real fight as Chi could only manage to reach 110 before being dismissed.

In Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to bounce back as they host bottomof-the-table Slinfold.

Stuart Hanks' side came up 51 runs short last weekend as they were trying to chase down Findon's 264 for 9.

Rico Webb put in a fine all-round performance for Pagham, clubbing 79 off just 36 balls after taking 4-54 with the ball.

But his effort was in vain as the Nyetimber Lane side could only reach 213 all out.

Andrade snapped up as City rebuild CHICHESTER City are only looking one way next season as the club look to seal promotion from the SCFL Premier for the first time.

Miles Rutherford's side promised so much in what was a record-breaking season for the Oaklands Park side.

A run to the last 16 of the FA Vase and winning the Sussex RUR Cup were highlights for Chi. But a late season slump in the SCFL Premier meant that City finished a disappointing sixth.

Rebuilding work is now underway at Oaklands Park. THis week, extensive renovation of the pitch began. But away from the ground, the club made the first summer signing of the season with Tiago Andrade being snapped up from Broadbridge Heath.

A goal-scoring attacker, the number 10 has

also played for Horsham, Shoreham and Haywards Heath in recent years. Andrade cited linking up with the first team coach Daniel Potter as a major reason for joining.

A statement from the club said: "We are very pleased with the amount of players from last year who have already committed to play this coming season. We're also working hard to secure a few more big signings ahead of preseason." * Fellow SCFL Premier club Pagham celebrated a successful season with their end of year awards evening this week. Top goalscorer Daniel Simmonds picked up the manager's player of the year. THe supporters award went to James Binfield while player's player was won by Ryan Davidson.

Dan's Beck in green and white as Rocks add Tuck and Sparks BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says there's still more work to be done despite the club snapping up two old faces and a new one in the last week.

THe Rocks manager has been hitting the phone hard in recent days as he looks to assemble a strong squad ahead of the club's return to the Isthmian Premier.

Midfield playmaker Doug Tuck was the first to commit to another year at Nyewood Lane this week. THat was followed by an announcement which confirmed the return of former club captain Dan Beck, pictured left, and Harvey Sparks, who has joined from fellow Isthmian Premier side Worthing.

Pearce was extremely pleased with the additions - but vows that more work needs to be done ahead of the side returning to preseason training in the first week of July.

He said: "THe club continues to have conversations with players and we remain very hopeful of bringing together a squad capable of doing the club and the supporters proud."

THe addition of Tuck in the past week is perhaps crucial to the club moving forward.

THe midfielder, who reportedly rejected offers from clubs elsewhere to stay at Nyewood Lane, has become integral to the Rocks in recent years. His cool calm nature in the middle of the park means he is often the start of many of Bognor's attacking moves.

His importance to the team was reflected in him winning the player's player of the year award at the club's recent awards evening.

Pearce said: "Doug embodies a lot of what we are about as a club and having him sign for next season is a tremendous bit of news for us.

"It shows we are working hard to continuing to assemble the squad we want in place.

Signing players of Tuck's ability should help ensure we are in a good position for when the season starts."

THe other additions will ensure there is competition for places in the Rocks midfield next term. Sparks, 23, is a left-sided midfielder who scored eight goals in 41 appearances at Woodside Road last term.

Pearce said: "We're very much looking forward to working with Harvey. He has had six years at Worthing and it'll do him no harm whatsoever coming to us to try to develop his game further.

"I think we will both benefit from that.

Dan is, of course, much respected by me and the supporters, having proved to be such a valuable player for the club over the years. It's encouraging to have a player of his experience, desire and attitude agree to join us for the new season.

Sparks, Tuck and Beck join Corey Heath, Keaton Wood, Harvey Whyte, Calvin Davies, Tommy Scutt and Chad Field in the Bognor ranks for next season.

Prices drop for season tickets THE COST of Bognor tickets for the coming campaign have been confirmed.

THe Rocks' return to the Isthmian Premier will see the club play 23 home matches compare to 21 last time out.

But Nye Camp faithful will be pleased to see that the drop in level means a drop in the price of a season ticket to Nyewood Lane.

Adult season tickets for terracing for the 2018/19 season have been priced at £177 down from £201 on the current campaign.

THe prices for senior citizens (over 65) have also dropped - from £168 to £147 - along with the season ticket cost for under-18s - which are £73, down from £84.

Season tickets in seating are priced at £192, while senior citizens pay £162.

On the day tickets for the terrace remain at £12 for adults. THe price for senior citizens (aged over 65) and under-18s (and students with ID)are also frozen at £10 and £5 respectively. Under-16s as of 11/8/18 can apply to the club for free season tickets.

Season tickets will be on sale from the club office or from Mia in Seasons from Monday, July 2, and at the pre-season friendly matches.

THe club office is normally open between 10am and midday (midweek only).

THE ROCKS rebuilding project is well and truly underway.

A new coach has been added in the guise of former Football League striker Robbie Blake while, on the pitch, seven players have agreed terms for next season.

Among the first to sign on the dotted line was utility player Harvey Whyte, pictured above left. THe former Havant man's lung-busting performances from a range of defensive and midfield positions have meant he is a real fan's favourite at Nyewood Lane.

Given that his dad Dallas played for the club back in the 80s, Harvey has Bognor in this blood.

In a chat with the club website, the 26-year-old reveals why he is chomping at the bit to help the club return to step two next season.

"THen you have Keaton, who is still only 23 but he has shown such maturity and again, I think he has a bright future ahead of him.”

First things first, let's talk departures. THe club has lost a number of influential players from last season. How will that affect the club moving forward?

"Obviously, there is going to be lots of talk about whether Jack is going to be the manager, and that will be sorted one way or another.

"But all I want to do is play and repay the fans for their loyalty by having a decent season.

“Jack has taken a lot of stick and he is the manager and we have gone down so he can’t escape that.

"But some of the personal abuse he has been given is totally out of order.

"He is a football man through and through and to my mind deserves respect.”

“Players will come and go, and that is up to them. You can’t blame players who want a change, perhaps earn more money somewhere else.

"We saw it with Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, when they went to Havant.

And fair play to them.

“But I just love Bognor. I love the football we try to play – and above all I want to move on from last season.

How much will the club miss the influence of former first team coach Dabba, who has now stepped down?

“I’ve learned so much from Dabba in the years since I left Havant, especially technically.

So, yes, it is undoubtable he’ll be missed.

"But we have to move on and try to regroup and get on with it."

A lot of fans are still talking about the situation with the manager - do you think Jack will stay on for another year?

What do you make of the signings so far?

How are you going to enjoy the break before pre-season starts?

“If you look at the players we’ve signed so far, it is very encouraging.

"I think Calvin Davies could one day be a professional and he’s a big signing. He’s technically gifted – all that might hold him back is his height!

“THough I would never tell him to his face, Chad Field has

“I’m going to kick back a bit and relax and I am looking forward to the break.

"But I can assure our supporters my mind will be fully focused on the job in hand come pre-season and the start of the season.

"And I hope our fantastic supporters are behind us once more and we do them proud.”
