BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MOTORISTS will continue to experience long delays along the A27 as work on the Stockbridge footbridge is set to continue for more weeks.

Traffic lights were set up while the footbridge is replaced, allowing pedestrians to cross the road while the

current footbridge is closed.

THe former footbridge across the A27 was due to remain closed until the replacement was built and opened.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “We look forward to opening the new Stockbridge footbridge soon and we are sorry for the delay.

"During our routine testing we identified an issue that could cause the walkway to move unacceptably in certain

conditions.

“All bridges need to allow a certain amount of controlled movement to protect the integrity of the structure. We are looking at engineering solutions that reduce this movement to allow safe and comfortable use of the walkway over the bridge.

“THere is absolutely not an issue with the structural integrity of the bridge - this is about completing final adjustments

When the temporary traffic lights were installed originally, Highways England were called to the area to assess them after a number of complaints were made regarding safety.

A special place to be proud of in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CABINET members have agreed to changes to planning guidelines at Fishbourne. At Chichester District Council cabinet's meeting on Tuesday, members discussed the review of the character appraisal and management proposals for the conservation area.

A report was produced which seeks approval of the revised conservation area character appraisal and management proposals for Fishbourne Conservation Area and changes to the conservation area boundary.

Cllr Peter Wilding said: "I just want to say how well produced the report was. I thought it made a very good document which could be used to promote tourism in Fishbourne as it's very positive.I certainly support what is proposed."

THe original Conservation Area Character Appraisal for Fishbourne was published in March, 2007.

Historic England's guidance reccomends that conservation area appraisals should be subject to review to ensure they are up to date and relevant as planning policy documents.

THe more up-to-date an appraisal is, the greater weight that can be attached to it, for example, at planning appeals.

THe up-to-date appraisal document will provide a sound basis for protecting the conservation area's character and give greater confidence in decision-making.

Fishbourne district councillor Adrian Moss said: "Fishbourne is a special place and I think we are all very proud of it.

"I do commend the report, I think it's

a fantastic document, I echo the words which have been said. I think people will realise, having read the report, there are some hidden gems in Fishbourne that don't get seen by many people.

"Fishbourne has a long, long history and so I think it's really important. THe actual report takes into account the church, the area around the mill and along the A27. THat includes some very old houses which are there.

"Since I was elected, I have talked to the parish council about the report just to make sure that they are happy. THey confirmed they are satisfied and very happy with the report.

"THe area has been extended to take into account one or two of the older houses in the village, including THe Old Forge, which is one of the oldest, if not the oldest house in the village. It was very important that we took that into account.

"THe report highlights the restrictions we put on people and what they can't do to their houses without our permission.

"My slight concern is that the property, THe Old THatched House, which is the second or third oldest house in the village. THe house has fallen into some disrepair and my concern is that this does highlight that the report doesn't address the fact some houses can go down without being looked after."

Principal conservation and design officer, Anna-Marie Pagano, responded: "THe council has received a complaint about the condition of the Old THatched House, Mill Lane, Fishbourne and our enforcement team is currently investigating the situation. We are working with the owner of the building to try to resolve the situation."

WOMEN interested in fly fishing are being encouraged to attend a gender parity on the water.

Orvis Chichester are holding their first 50/50 event on Friday, May 11, at Moorhen Trout Fishery.

THere will be free tuition by Orvis guide, Brian Smart, and free use of equipment to encourage complete novices to try fly fishing – it is all about getting more women fly fishing as well as creating an event for experienced anglers to come together and share their experiences.

Fly fishing is a game of stalking, accuracy, and precision. Women are just as competent as men in the sport, yet it is still male-dominated in most parts of the world.

With declining numbers comes less eyes on the water and a natural decline in those who are truly interested in the health of UK waterways and conservation.

Post Newspapers – publisher of the Bognor Regis Post and Chichester Post - is celebrating the success of its links with Lidl in Chichester.

THe growing retailer has become the first outlet we supply directly to have 1,000 copies snapped up every week.

THat number has grown and grown in recent months to reach the four-figure milestone to reflect the popularity of the Portfield Way store.

Editor-in-chief Adam Cunard said there could be no better way to celebrate the newspapers’ second anniversary.

“We are delighted to have reached such a significant milestone just as we reach our second anniversary.

“THe recent increases in the number

of copies we supply to Lidl in Chichester reflects the growing popularity of our papers,” he said.

Lidl store manager Gareth Busby said: “I was quite shocked to realise how well it was doing. People grab copies of the paper on their way out as they are placed near the door.”

Mr Cunard said he was determined to continue to produce a quality independent newspaper which provided an alternative to the established media.

“We set out to become the best free weekly newspapers in the area and our distribution figure for Lidl in Chichester shows that we have achieved that.

“We always try to achieve a good balance between the editorial content of our newspapers, which we know our readers enjoy, and the advertising revenue we need to pay for our costs.

“All sections of the printed media face increased competition for advertising nowadays but we are determined to keep on getting better – and to continue to provide many more must-read moments on Fridays.”

But he added none of the successes would be possible without the newspapers’ thousands of readers or the continued backing of our advertisers who know that spending money with us pays off in promoting their goods and services.

Some 30,000 copies of the Post are distributed each week to a variety of pick-up points in large and small outlets.

A proportion of that print run is distributed from our printers by our specialist contractors to several of the large supermarkets. Each of these outlets can exceed 1,000 copies a week.

"Safety is Highways England’s top priority, and we want to ensure our roads are safe for our road users and workers.”

Residents, workers and visitors to the city have continued to see long delays and holds-up at the roundabout.

Michael Rooke, from Chichester, said the roadworks have added an extra 20 minutes on to his daily commute.

He said: "I live on the A27 near the Portfield roundabout. My wife works in Havant and I work in Hilsea. We have to allow at least an extra ten minutes in the morning and evening for both journeys to go around the city and come out at the Fishbourne roundabout.

"I can only envisage further misery in the summer months as they try to rectify the situation as it is the main roundabout on the route to the Wittering beaches."

Chichester Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans said: "It is a real shame that once again Highways England will be extending their works in the area, causing major

disruption for both local residents and through traffic, this time due to engineering issues on the footbridge.

"We are now suffering Wobbly Bridge syndrome similar to the Millennium Bridge over the river THames in London.

"So now we have a bridge that frankly could have been engineered to look better and is wobbly to boot!

"We require major improvements to the road around Chichester and on the Chichester/ Emsworth section of the A27. Motorists are having to contend with a deteriorating road surface, which is now becoming dangerous, due to vehicles taking avoiding action when confronted with major surface defects."

Drivers could face further delays with plans for two further bridges at the Shopwyke Lake development.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there are no changes proposed at this time to the plans submitted for approval in 2011. Proposals for two footbridges include one to the north east of the development, to the south of Portfield Roundabout. THe existing signalised pedestrian crossing point at Oving Crossroads has already been upgraded.

“Any further improvements, and timescales on the A27 are dependent on the construction, sale and subsequent occupation of dwellings on the site, and Highways England is working with the applicants consultants to reach an agreed design for both footbridges and timetable for the project.”

` Witness appeal POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Chichester, following which a teenager sadly died.

Emergency services were called to the incident between a van and a pedestrian on the A27 westbound, close to the junction with the B2144 Shopwhyke Road, at 1.07am on Tuesday May 1.

THe pedestrian – an 18-yearold man who was living locally – sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Southampton Hospital, where he later died.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed events leading up to the collision, the collision itself, or anyone who stopped to offer assistance, to report it online or phone 101, quoting Operation Perimeter.

Four arrested after cannabis is seized On entry, officers conducted a search of the property and found four growing tents with 11 cannabis plants and a drying rack.

A 56-year-old-man and a 24-year-old woman from Chichester, and a 31-yearold man from Hounslow, London, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production of a controlled class B drug (cannabis).

THe Chichester Prevention Team attended a property in Hunston Road, Chichester, on Wednesday, April 25, in the morning, as support for Southern Electric, who needed to gain entry to the house.

A MEETING will be held today (Friday) for the local launch of the South Coast Alliance for Transport and the Environment (SCATE) report.

Cllr Sarah Sharp will be joined at the Bassil Shippam Centre by Chris Todd, from Campaign for Better Transport, Tony Whitbread, from Sussex Wildlife Trust, Kia Trainor, from Campaign to Protect Rural England, and Brenda Pollock, from Friends of the Earth, who will be chairing the launch.

Cllr Sharp said: "I have attended all the road-orientated meetings about the A27 and I am sure this event will be like a breath of fresh air - different, innovative and inspiring."

Trail run to raise thousands for new Boxgrove school hall ATHLETES can lace up their running shoes and join a new trail run in Boxgrove next month.

THe Boxgrove 5K Run is organised to raise funds for important local causes, guiding you around the village's beautiful Priory and ruins, the quarry woods, the picturesque Tinwood vineyards and local pub.

Organisers have chosen to support the children and parents of Boxgrove CEP School, who need to raise £170,000 to build a much needed school hall.

Currently, the school does not have a space where all the children can

get together for assembly, lunch, presentation, plays or PE when raining.

THe run will be held on Saturday, June 16, between 12.30pm and 2pm, which is the same day as their school fayre with entertainment and games for young ones.

A best fancy dressed runner award will be judged by the school head on the day.

With just over 200 places in total, including juniors, organisers are encouraging participants to book soon to avoid disappointment.

Petition to save gymnastics

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HUNDREDS of supporters have thrown their weight behind a campaign asking the council to approve a dedicated gymnastics facility in Chichester.

THe Academy of Gym (TAG) which is based in West Sussex, is hoping Chichester District Council will approve its planning application for a new facility in Sidlesham.

THe popular, not-for-profit, gymnastics club is currently based at Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester but this limits what training can take place as there are no specialist gymnastics facilities, such as safety pits and sprung

flooring.

All squad level competitive gymnasts, who win regularly at regional competitions and many of whom are part of the Sussex squad, currently have to travel many miles each weekly to use alternative facilities in Bognor, Chidham and Portsmouth.

Earlier this year, the club put in a change of use application for a warehouse at Keynor Farm, Chalk Lane, Sidlesham. If approved, the warehouse would be kitted out internally with all the equipment the gymnasts need to train safely and to their maximum potential.

THe move would also create job opportunities and increase the number and type of gymnastics classes the club can offer to young people in the area.

Many supporters have signed a petition and commented online to support the application.

Kris Dorney, head coach at TAG, said: "Gymnastics is a fantastic sport which is growing massively in popularity due to the success of the British squad on the world stage in major competitions such as the Olympics and recently at the Commonwealth Games.

"We have been searching for years to find our own premises and think we have found the perfect venue at Sidlesham.

"It would be a fantastic outcome for both current and aspiring gymnasts in the region if the plans were approved and encourage more young people to get healthy and active.

"All our gymnasts have done

fantastically well at recent competitions, despite the fact that compared to other clubs we cannot currently offer them same number of training hours and access to training facilities.

"Having new premises really could lead to a future champion coming from this area and we hope the council will be keen to support us."

Gymnasts at TAG have been taking over the podium at recent competitions with all squad gymnasts successfully passing their annual grades and two gymnasts, Jessie and Daisy, qualifying to compete for the South East Region team in the national grade two finals next month.

A walk to remember for St Wilfrid's Hospice

AN ORIGINAL set of name plates from a Battle of Britain steam train have been donated to the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

‘Tangmere’ was a West Country and Battle of Britain class steam locomotive built for Southern Region in 1947.

THe class was designed by its chief mechanical engineer Oliver Bullied and 110 were built, the third batch being named after squadrons, airfields, commanders and aircraft that had participated in the Battle of Britain over Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

THe name on each BoB locomotive was incorporated in a name plate design resembling a wing of an aircraft and was painted in Air Force blue. Beneath the nameplate, the locomotives named after airfields carried a large oval enamelled RAF badge.

In 1965 the original set of plates from ‘Tangmere’ (numbered 34067) were presented to the RAF officers' mess at RAF Tangmere, where they remained

until the station closed in 1970.

THey were then stored by the RAF Museum at Cardington until purchased by Barry Eden, chairman of the Mid-Hants Railway Preservation Society Ltd, in October, 1991.

Mr Eden recently contacted David Coxon, curator of the museum, and offered to donate the plates with the number plate ‘34067’ to the museum’s collection.

He said he considered himself to have only been the custodian of the plates and that they were now back where they belonged.

THe plates - original name plate, oval enamelled badge, a replica of the RAF Tangmere Station badge and plaque, all donated by Mr Eden, are now on display in the museum’s Merston Hall.

David Coxon said: “THe museum is very grateful for Barry’s generous gift of these original locomotive plates as they are artefacts that recognise the important part RAF Tangmere played in the Battle of Britain.”

City cinema patron is not just a typecast in new book

Dame Maggie Smith is an English actress with an extensive, varied career on stage, film and television spanning over 66 years.

Smith has appeared in more than 50 films and is one of Britain's most recognisable actresses.

Maggie Smith: A View from the Stalls, focuses on the last 25 years, examining, through the many parts she has played since the early 1990s, her ability to go beyond typecasting and give, thanks to her chameleon skills, nuanced and convincing portrays of infinitely diverse characters.

Writer Caroline Fevrier said: "For a long time, I have been interested in types and typecasting, and I was intrigued by the fact that Maggie Smith, one of the great actresses of our time – if not the greatest, had often been typecast since the early 1990s.

"I started to research and write this book, ten years ago. Gradually, with the worldwide success Harry Potter and the Downton Abbey TV show, it appeared that the general public considered her the actress of two roles, Minerva McGonagall and the Dowager Countess, as if she had not played anything else before."

Caroline Fevrier holds a PhD in Literature and Humanities and a MA in Literature and Drama. She was also trained professionally in performance and has been involved in several stage productions and short films. Caroline gives lectures on theatre to academic audiences and has previously published several books on literature and history.

"Chichester is certainly among the dearest places to Dame Maggie Smith's heart, both personally and professionally," said Caroline.

"She is a patron of the Chichester Cinema at New Park, and, of course, the Chichester Festival THeatre has hosted some of her most acclaimed performances at different times in her career.

"In 1965, in a National THeatre summer season, she played the title role in Strindberg's Miss Julie, with Albert Finney, and also appeared in Black Comedy, by P. Shaffer, with Derek Jacobi.

` Changes in Chichester THE ‘Flashback - Chichester’ group on Facebook continues to provide fascinating information. THis week, there was a link to a ‘brief history of Chichester’ by Tim Lambert, which highlighted to me how the population of Chichester has changed.

Little is known about the density of the city during the Roman and Saxon eras, so we’ll fast forward to the Norman conquest (1066) when it is thought Chichester had a population of around 1,500.

While small by our standards, most villages at the time had just 100-150 people. By 1250, the population of Chichester was thought to be around 2,500.

During the 16th century, Chichester declined in importance, as a variety of its trades deteriorated.

By the time of the 1642-51 Civil War, Chichester had a population of around 3,000 people and it was seen as a “quiet little town”. Large re-building schemes throughout Chichester in the 17th and 18th centuries saw the population rise to 4,000 by 1720 and to 5,000 by 1801.

Like the rest of Britain in the 19th century (which quadrupled in population), Chichester began to grow rapidly; Somerstown was built in the early 1800s, followed by the south-east corner of the city.

Within a century the population had almost doubled, with 9,000 residents by 1900.

THe 20th century saw the most growth though, with a population of 12,000 by the First World War (with Summersdale being built), 16,000 by the Second World War (as council houses were built), 21,000 by 1971 and over 23,000 by the end of the century.

THe most recent census in 2011 shows a population of 26,795 in Chichester. With a plethora of new developments on the horizon (including Whitehouse Farm, with 1,600 homes planned) it seems Chichester’s growing population shows no signs of slowing down any time soon!

No more cups for tea party

Boston Tea Party (BTP), the independently owned coffee chain, stands to lose over £1 million in takeaway coffee sales when it bans all single use coffee cups on June 1.

Takeaway hot drinks are 5.2 per cent of Boston Tea Party's total turnover of £19.8m.

THe cafe, which is due to open in Baffins Lane, in Chichester, in mid-June, will already have the ban in place.

Sam Roberts, owner and managing director of BTP, said: "Lots of coffee chains are making pledges about how they plan to tackle cup waste in the future. But theirs is a future which is too far away.

"We need to stop right now. I'd stop tomorrow but I think it's only fair to give our loyal customers and fantastic team a month to get used to the idea."

Despite Chichester District Council confirming coffee takeaway cups were recyable in the area, millions of cups were still sent to landfill.

Only 1 in 400 of the estimated 2.5 billion plastic-coated coffee cups used in the UK each year are recycled.

THe team at BTP believes the only sustainable option is to reduce and reuse, rather than recycle.

THis ground-breaking initiative is a significant risk to the business. In July, 2016, BTP was one of the first coffee chains to offer a 25p discount for customers bringing their own cups. But this has seen just a 2.8 per cent take-up – not enough to make an environmental difference.

In asking all customers to use a reusable cup every time, Mr Roberts and his team are taking a bold stance.

He explained: "We want to demonstrate to other operators that to make a difference, big change is needed.

"We will make this work and we’ll share details of how we’ve done it with anyone who wants our help to do the same."

Grants for small businesses SMALL businesses in the Chichester District are being offered help with apprenticeship training or to fund capital projects.

A total of £71,428 is being made available through the Enabling Grants scheme which offers a simple way for businesses to apply for match funding of up to £2,500 for capital projects, or up to £1,500 for apprenticeship training.

Examples of capital projects could include; equipment to help fit out a health and beauty salon, an extractor fan system for a pub kitchen, developing a new website, or providing an IT workstation for a new member of staff. THese projects can be very costly for small businesses but can provide a huge benefit.

Managed by the council’s Economic Development Team, the availability of these new small grants should give

small businesses the confidence to try something new and thereby enhance the entrepreneurial culture across the district.

THe scheme is always very popular and in the past year alone has benefited 39 small businesses.

Councillor Tony Dignum, Leader of Chichester District Council said: "One of our priorities as a council is to improve and support the local economy. THat’s why we have a grants programme to help small businesses. We know these grants can have a huge effect and be a real catalyst for growth. We hope this new round of grants will provide another welcome boost."

Brewing up a new business

Lets Get Coffee is a web agency which has been established for six months with under five employees.

THe £6 million Enterprise Centre was built to provide affordable accommodation for new or small to medium-sized businesses and opened on March 1, with 19 out of a possible 82 units currently occupied.

THe building, located in Terminus Road, was built by Chichester District Council in order to create jobs and encourage the growth of start-up businesses in the district.

Let's Get Coffee was the first company to move in to the building, renting unit one, which is 269 sq ft.

Katie Lacy, senior developer at Let's Get Coffee, said: "We work with large clients to produce websites, which can be informative, brochure or e-commerce builds. We also work with marketing agencies who will pass clients to us after they have completed their marketing strategies."

Katie set up the business with Oli Witcomb, combining their experiences.

Katie said: "We both have eight years' experience in development and design with other companies where we felt the client was paying for more than what was needed and

also getting low pay for ourselves. We wanted to make a company who helps out small businesses without feeling like they are being ripped off as the world of the web can be quite scary and without the know how can find it difficult to set there online presence."

Let's Get Coffee were originally based in Havant before the move to Chichester in March. Katie said: "We first started working in Havant Basepoint centre while we waiting for the new offices to be built in Chichester. We are local so it means less travel and more work!

"Chichester is also an area which has other web agencies but we feel we offer better quality work at a much lower cost for small local businesses.

"We decided on moving to the Enterprise Centre because it gives a

professional feel and the company itself always have lovely members of staff.

"THere’s no set long-term contact here as well, so as a small start-up, we like the idea of that we are not tied into a longterm contract it's just a monthly rolling one, so if things were to go wrong we are not stuck. We can also up-size or downsize as needed.

"THe price in rent is very good. We pay around £800 after tax per month and this office space can have a capacity of up to six people. THe regional manager here

helped us when we moved in to apply for small business rates, saving us around £3,000 per year."

Since moving, the duo at Let's Get Coffee are very pleased with the centre.

"Since we moved in, it's been great, they have allowed us to make our office our own which is great when we have clients coming in and employees who want to chill out.," said Katie. "Any changes we want to make we just need to fill out a form and get going as long as we are not removing a wall!"

Siblings are among best for charity SIBLING Bognor Regis marathon runners Nigel and Nicola Fitzsimmons are still totting up their sponsorship.

THe pair know they have raised some least £5,000 for the National Autistic Society by sweating their way around London.

A week still remains for supporters to donate to the brother and sister. But the charity has told them they are likely to be in the top ten fundraisers among its 180 runners. THeir total amount raised is set to top £260,000.

North Bersted resident Nigel, 43, said: "We think we're on track to raise £5,000, which will be amazing."

THey gritted their teeth, strengthened their resolve and reminded themselves why they were running.

"As much as we trained, researched and so on, I don't think anything could have prepared us for the feelings and happenings on race day.

"THe heat for one was intense, the hottest London Marathon on record we understand, and so having trained

in mostly sub-zero temperatures, it proved to be a challenge from the off.

"As nervous as we were, we also had a great sense of calm between us, knowing that everything we'd put into fundraising - all the events, hard work, arguments, and training in the morning - was all coming together and it was like a moment of glory, just to embrace."

THe pair completed the run together in 5hr 45min and were inspired by a person very close to them who is on the autistic spectrum.

Nicola, 45, of Aldwick, said: "Everything people tell you about the crowds at the London Marathon is true.

"THey are absolutely fantastic and, as we had our names on our running vests, absolute strangers were shouting our names out for what felt like the entire 26 miles. It's incredible.

"We found it a real challenge and we hear people saying it's both the best and the worst thing they've ever done, which we now understand.

"We're now on the hunt for another - possibly Paris, Rome, Norway or Barcelona, so we can feel the buzz again and better our time.

"If anyone is having the slightest thought about doing a marathon, all we can say is...do it."

ARMED forces veterans will be better supported thanks to a near £150,000 funding boost.

THe money - from the Ministry of Defence's armed forces covenant fund - will go towards expanding local support for former military personnel who often find it hard to access public services.

THe grant of £147,888 over two years will be used to enhance existing veteran drop-in centres and set up new ones in areas where they are found to be needed.

As well as offering practical advice on matters like jobs and housing, the centres foster friendships and help ensure veterans with mental health difficulties or social care needs get the right support.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "It is so important that veterans are given the support they need and deserve. So I am incredibly pleased to hear about this funding."

Dancers show skills DANCERS with disabilities performed at a Bognor Regis event with their first public show.

THe Chichester Down Syndrome Support Group's members joined together with the Suzanne Hill School of Dance from the Bognor Regis area and wheelchair dancers to put on a special performance at the Our Generation day.

THey topped off their set at last Saturday's event with a unique rendition of THe Beatles' Love Me Do in British Sign Language. About 50 dancers took part, from age four upwards.

Suzanne Hill said: "THis is the first time we have been to this event and the first time we have put on a performance like this. It's taken a lot of co-ordination but this is something that has never been done before.

"THis is a great day which has been put on by Kez Bridger. It's a day for young people which has been set up so young people can perform."

THe Down syndrome dancers have appeared on YouTube. THe association's events officer, Kath Lake, said it had opened up opportunities such as the appearance in Hotham Park.

"THis is a fantastic opportunity for the dancers. THey are really excited by this and they are loving it," she said.

One of the dancers, Isabelle Lack, 23, said: "Dancing is amazing. I enjoy everything about it. It's really exciting showing people what I can do."

Bognor Regis resident Claire Needs, 33, said she was keen to show someone in a wheelchair could dance.

"It's brilliant to do something that everyone else can do. I'm always being asked how I can dance in a wheelchair and today is a chance to show people that I can.

"THis is proof to people that, just because you are in a wheelchair, it does not stop you doing what you want," said Claire, who has cerebral palsy.

All the dancers were taught British Sign Language by tutor Eve Anderson. She said: "THis is getting the message out that it is a proper language. It is the first time I have done this in 20 years of teaching it.

I started with the alphabet, the numbers and then built it up each week."

THe bandstand performance was part of the showcase of young people's performing talents. It was the first of two days held by Bognorphenia.

THe opening act was the Rustingtonbased Outlaw Allstar Cheerleaders. THeir joint founder, Karen Finneman, said: "We have dancers from four to 21. THey like to show people what they can do. I've got 12 dancers here today out of 60 in total.

Events like this are really important.

"In today's society, a lot of children stay at home watching TV or on their PlayStations. THey don't get fresh air and don't get any exercise."

One of the dancers was Alisha Elliott, 11. Her mum, Katie Chesterman, said: "She was really shy when she joined two years ago.

She has grown in confidence since then and the dancers just love being together."

Others to take part in front of the hundreds of people who went along on the day included Savannah, A27, Work in Progress and DJ Charlee Hatcher.

Clown Tricky Nicky, pictured right, also added some fun, along with RepTylers and a host of other stalls.

It was the opening day of a weekend of music. Organiser Kez Bridger said she had been happy with the latest staging in

spite of poor weather for the third year running.

Cloudy skies and low temperatures persisted during both days.

“THe weather has been bad again but I’m still pleased with the event otherwise,” she said.

“THe comments I’ve had have been really positive. We had a nice stream of people throughout Saturday and very good feedback about the young people.

“People were really pleased we were supporting the kids and said it was good to see them. When I spoke to the young people after their performances, they were just chuffed to get the chance to perform.

“I think the Our Generation day is still quite new in only its second year and it needs to be built upon.

“I’m hoping we will be back on both days next year. I always think positively about that.”

Band rocks Bognor again MADNESS support act THe Aim again delighted the crowds in Bognor Regis.

THe South London band played in a concert with the House of Fun chart-toppers in front of 40,000 fans in Kent last summer.

And they topped the bill at the latest staging of Bognorphenia in Hotham Park on Sunday.

To mark the occasion, singer Grant Judges had the title of their third album, Feel Like Getting High, painted on to his left hand.

He said: “We are hoping the album will be out

by Christmas. It features all our own work, with songs and family, friendships, peace and love.

“We had a good time at Bognorphenia last year and we told the organiser, Kez Bridges, we would be happy to come back.

“She always puts on a very good show and we are pleased to support the good work of Bognorphenia in the community."

Guitarist Jamie Tongue said: “We can’t wait to play here again. We always get great support when we play on the south coast."

Grant’s hand was painted by Worthing resident Debbie Mott. She took along her restored child’s electric Vespa built in 1985 for their first visit to Bognorphenia. Her husband, Andy, said: “THis is only the second show we have taken this to. Everyone loves it and several people have wanted to buy it off my wife.

“One person offered her over £2,000 but she likes it so much she wants to keep it. My wife was a Mod in the eighties and always wanted a scooter like this."

She put her Vespa among the 50 scooters for adults on display on Sunday morning. Eight acts performed at the bandstand for Bognorphenia.

THey included Nic Dunnaway, Chichester Rock Choir, THe Regents and Holly Gregory.

` Wartime memories MEMORIES of the First and Second World Wars are being sought by radio volunteers in Chichester.

Chichester Hospital Radio's helpers would like to hear from people who can remember the 1939-45 conflict or handed down stories of the Great War. A spokesman said: "THese stories are to be recorded and broadcast during Remembrance Day week and the anniversary of the end of the First World War special programmes.

"We have not forgotten many served during the Korean, Suez and Middle East wars, so your stories are just as important."

THe memories can be happy or sad.

THey can be recorded at the radio service's studios at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester or the recording can be done in individuals' homes.

"We are a group of volunteers that produce programmes for the patients in St Richard's Hospital. None of our members is paid and all the money we collect goes to keeping our service going," the spokesman added.

Natasha's honour for her work with disabled f Peter Wells presents the cheque

Rotary helps to improve access A £4,000 cheque from Bognor Regis Rotary Club will help improve access for disabled people.

THe money was presented by the club's vice-president, Peter Wells, to Livability Ashley Place last week.

Club press officer Peter Stemp said: "THe money was from a legacy given to the club to help with disability access in Bognor Regis.

"It will go towards a new vehicle with wheelchair access.

"Staff at Ashley Place have built a good rapport with the local community and the provision of a vehicle with wheelchair access will enhance the lives of residents considerably."

CHARITY worker Natasha Coles has won a national award for her role in Bognor Regis.

Natasha was commended with a prestigious Princess Royal Livability Award for her work with the disability charity, Livability.

She has worked at Ashley Place and the previous premises of Ashley House for ten years and has made 2018 special with a fundraising drive for a mobility vehicle.

She said: "It's really important to me that disabled people get to do the same things as everybody else.

"Public transport can create barriers which lead to social isolation, but this vehicle will make a big difference to what we can do and where we can go.

"It's one way of connecting Ashley people with the community."

THe appeal has so far raised £7,000 of its £10,000 target.

As a charity, Livability grew from a merger of the charities, John Grooms and THe Shaftesbury Society. THe awards were presented last week by Nick AshleyCooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury.

He said: "Working for radically caring

and inclusive communities was central to the faith and work of my ancestor - the 7th Earl of Salisbury.

"As vice-patron of Livability, I am proud to know first-hand how that founding vision continues to inspire the charity's staff, volunteers and supporters today."

Livability Ashley Place in King's Parade has 18 residents who have lived in the modern premises since a move from nearby Aldwick Road a few years ago.

Livability's Louise Bastable said Natasha fufilled its values of being enabling, open, courageous and inclusive.

Ashley Place is a residential home for working aged adults from 18-65 years. It provides accommodation for up to 16 permanent residents, with five respite rooms available throughout the year.

THe home provides specialist care for people with physical impairments and care needs associated with disability, within a modern environment, specifically designed for the autonomy of people who use wheelchairs, fitted with the latest assisted technology and adaptions.

SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW? In line with national requirement, we have to go through a

procurement process for the new contract for this local service.

DR VICKY BEATTIE, Clinical Lead for Urgent Care at the CCG, said: People have told us over the past three years that they find the current way services work confusing and don’t know where to go when they need urgent care for minor illnesses and injuries.

“Some people find it hard to get an urgent GP appointment when they need one. We don’t think this is good enough and want to make it easier for people to get the care they need.

“These plans will mean that anyone who needs an urgent appointment will be able to be seen within 24 hours - and mostly the same day.

“We will also be introducing two new Urgent Treatment Centres in area and extending the minor injury service in Bognor Regis to give people living around there better access to this type of NHS help when they need it most.

“This will all be supported by an improved NHS 111 service where people will be able to get clinically assessed over the phone and either helped there and then, booked an appointment or signposted to the right place for the care they need.

“This will mean you will only need to tell your story once and we will cut down on the number of people bouncing around before they get the help they need.

“We are confident this will be a less confusing way for services to work so that people can get the care they need quickly, and for most of the time, closer to their home.”

TRANSATLANTIC negotiations notwithstanding, Sainsbury's Chichester store was my port of call this week with a focus on flavoursome white wines for a summer afternoon and red wines for indoor evening supping.

Two white wines from Australia and two others of French provenance initially caught my eye, with the reliable McGuigan Estate from South Australia offering a 2017 Sauvignon Blanc for just £5. Crisp and dry (but not a vegetable oil) with citrus and passion fruit flavours to the fore, this wine is well balanced, has good acidity and is decidedly fresh and a snip at this price!

McGuigan wines are synonymous with quality and thus, for £1 extra, the 2017 McGuigan Reserve Chardonnay utterly failed to disappoint, being of a good vintage with crisp ripe apple and white peach on the palate and having a delightfully creamy texture culminating in a good subtle oak finish.

THis well-crafted wine is reminiscent of Southern Burgundy in style, but

at almost half the price and is one I wholeheartedly recommend as a summer evening post-work tipple!

My third wine selection is the rising star that is Picpoul De Pinet (move aside ohso-bland Pinot Grigio ) and for an outlay of seven readies I was able to procure a 2016 Baron De Guers Picpoul De Pinet from Pomérols in the Languedoc and from vineyards overlooking the sea.

Lovers of soft Chardonnays should like this example being fresh, exuding green apples with lemon and lime notes.

A good summer drinking wine and an eminently food-friendly one (excellent

THe other French white came in the form of a 2016 Château de La Pierre Côtes de Grandlieu Muscadet Sur Lie currently on offer for £7.50. THe old vine character of this wine is most evident with intense minerality affording an alluring texture allied to refreshing fruit flavours of green apple and pear.

Sporting a slight spritz, this Nantes Muscadet is an ideal summer's drink or apéritif given its delicacy and balanced acidity and pairs well with any shellfish.

Quant aux vins rouges, I opted to compare three Malbecs and one French

Médoc. THe Barefoot Californian Malbec was competitively priced at £5.75, but inspired me little with the jammy taste I associate with cheaper Argentinian Malbecs.

However, each to his own, I accept some people might have a more favourable reaction to this number.

Argentinian Malbecs these days are more comparable to Old World wines and command general respect and thus, for an expenditure of £7.50, I was able to avail myself of a 2017 Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Argentinian Fairtrade Malbec which proved to be smooth, dry and full-bodied with blackberry overtones and a hint of spice in the finish.

INGREDIENTS • large piece of ginger, finely chopped • large pack coriander, stalks and leaves separated • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 beefshort ribs • 1 tsp golden caster sugar • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 50ml oyster sauce • 500ml chicken stock • 3 star anise • 2 tbsp Chinese black rice wine vinegar • cooked basmati rice, to serve FOR THE HERB SALAD • 1 THai red chilli, chopped • coriander leaves (from the pack above) • small pack mintleaves • 1 shallot, finely sliced • juice 1 lime • 1 tsp THai fish sauce

THe third Malbec was one of my alltime favourites, namely an Argentinian D.V.Catena Malbec of the 2015 vintage and on offer for £10. Just one sip can send you into transports of delight as this beautifully smooth and subtle Malbec hits your taste buds with its black fruits, black pepper spice, hints of vanilla and a decidedly long finish - a Bordeaux -style Malbec and one to savour!

Finally, the 2016 Pavillon La Tourelle Médoc , currently on offer at £8.50, was eminently quaffable and, with black fruit and berry flavours, would complement a roast beef lunch.

Allow the wine to breathe a while to appreciate the full fruit flavour and a wine well worth a try, à mon avis - À bientôt!

1. In a mini chopper, make a paste with the ginger, coriander stalks, onion and garlic, then set aside. Heat the oil in the pressure cooker pan and brown the meat well on all sides, then remove.

Fry the paste for 2-3 mins with 1 tsp golden caster sugar. Return the ribs to the pan and add the soy sauce, star anise, oyster sauce and enough chicken stock to just cover the ribs.

2. Bring to a simmer, cover and bring up to high pressure. Cook for 45 mins, then release the pressure slowly. Take off the lid, add a splash of vinegar and remove the ribs from the pan. Simmer the sauce down until reduced and intensely flavoured. While the sauce is simmering, mix the salad ingredients together. Serve each rib in a puddle of sauce, topped with a pile of salad and rice on the side.

INGREDIENTS • 2 limes • 140g golden caster sugar • 125g punnet blueberry • 200ml carton coconut cream • 284ml carton double cream • extra blueberries, to serve

Blueberry, coconut & lime ice cream

Method 1. Finely grate the zest from one of the limes and squeeze the juice from both. Put in a small pan with the sugar and heat gently, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the blueberries and simmer for 2 minutes, just until the skins start to split.

2. Pour the blueberry mixture into a bowl and stir in the coconut cream.

Leave to cool. Whip the cream in a large bowl until it just holds its shape, then gradually stir in the blueberry mixture.

Put the bowl in the freezer

for about 1 hour, until the mixture is set about 3cm in from the edges.

3. Remove from the freezer and mix it all together using a whisk. When it’s fairly smooth, return to the freezer for a further hour, then repeat the whisking one more time.

Transfer the ice cream to a rigid container, cover and freeze until firm, or for up to a month. Before serving,move to the fridge for 30 minutes to soften it. Serve with extra blueberries scattered over.

A healthier and longer life is only a heartbeat away IF WE have always maintained a very unhealthy lifestyle, such as excessive drinking, smoking, consuming processed foods etc, is it possible that we can turn the clock back on our health? Some studies have proven over time that by making certain lifestyle choices, we may be able to effectively turn back the clock 14 years in terms of mortality.

But whether the benefits observed in those studies are the result of good, life-long health habits or can be achieved by those who make changes later in life, needed to be confirmed. However, what was found was that a switch in mid-life, that is, in our late 40s to early 60s, to a healthy lifestyle that includes at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise, and not smoking results in a substantial reduction in mortality over just the next four years. THis is surprising, not only because the benefit appeared so quickly, but also because the lifestyle changes were so modest. THe findings emphasise that making the necessary lifestyle changes is extremely worthwhile, and it’s never too late to get with the programme!

If we can get such dramatic benefits so late in life and in such a short amount of time, why can’t we just live lives of gluttony and sloth-like behaviour,

and then just clean up our acts around 50 or so? I know so many people that don’t wish to change at all. And that is perfectly OK. We all have free will and choices. But what if it is too late? What if your very first symptoms are your last?

Sudden cardiac death accounts for more than half of all heart disease deaths. Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide just drop dead every year. Sudden cardiac death is the first manifestation of heart disease for the majority of individuals, particularly among women, meaning they had no idea they even had heart disease until they were literally dying from it. For many, their first indication of the presence of coronary heart disease is their demise. THat’s why prevention is the key.

So, does prevention work? Women who don’t smoke, walk a half-hour a day, aren’t overweight, and eat a prudent diet, defined in the study as greater than average fruit, vegetable, nut, whole grain, and bean consumption, had a 92 per cent lower risk of sudden cardiac death. When it comes to sudden death, an ounce of prevention is truly worth more than a pound of cure, because there is no cure once you are dead. THat’s a fact of life! So why not try making some changes, starting today.

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which cover the start of a new era for its work.

BEAVER BRIDGES was on site recently to install the three special bridges connecting the rear deck structure of our new building to the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

THe largest of these bridges spanned 14m and weighed a whopping 4.4 tonnes. Beaver used a massive 300 tonne crane to lift the three bridges over the building. A very spectacular sight to see!

THe 4.2m tall stainless steel slide has now been installed between the first and ground floors and is currently wrapped Sir, I read with interest – and hope! – the article in the Chichester Post about litter, pictured above.

What a good idea it sounds to get community groups involved in the fight against fly-tipping, litter and dogfouling. If only everyone would 'take their litter home' what a more attractive county/country we would have.

I have a food for thought to suggest, based on the idea of the catchy phrase '20 is plenty' around school areas. It is this – when driving around the bypass or the A27, a few catchy notices about

With the main facade scaffold now struck, or removed, and the shingles glinting in the spring sunshine the true beauty of the building has been revealed for the first time.

THe external steel decking structure has now been installed, and we are progressing with the timber joists and composite decking. THis has allowed us to start the curved handrail system to the decking area.

Internally, the atrium scaffold has been struck and the huge bi-folding glazed doors to the decking area have been fitted.

Progress has also been made to the internal boarding, tape and jointing and the joinery and the carpentry works have moved on with the doors being hung and the kitchen fitted.

Externally, the groundworks are progressing as are the paving finishing works.

Our May half-term events will be starting on May 26 for an action-packed week at the country centre.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask visitors to bear with us during the development. THe trust thanks you all in advance for your patience and understanding while this exciting new development build is underway.

FOUR works have been revealed as the winners of an arts competition for this year's arts and crafts festival at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

THe pieces were created by fine arts students after they were inspired by West Dean's collection and archive. THis preserves the legacy of the college's founder, Edward James, as a great patron of 20th century. THe works will be displayed during the June 1-3 festival in West Dean House, home to the college, alongside work from the collection, and in the grounds.

Francine Norris, the college's director of education, said: "THe quality, breadth and inventiveness of proposals from our graduate diploma and Master of Fine Arts students brings West Dean's surreal heritage alive for today's visitors in what is one of the UK's most unique arts destinations."

THe four installations to appear in and around West Dean House are: Painted Paces by Emma Rimmer, pictured above - inspired by Edward James' Footprint Carpet created in the 1930s and on view in the house; Faust Stoff by Maud Boothby - an adapted version of the motif of the clenched fist used by Edward James as an image for his publishing venture in 1931; Vestiges by Cherie Lubbock - bound together using ties and sealed in cellophane, Lubbock's sculpture is a physical manifestation of support and protection; and A Conversation in Steel by Askild Winkelmann - a new piece of choreography by student and fencer Winkelmann is inspired by archive photographs.

ON A Friday afternoon, I was coming out of Iceland in South Street, Chichester, and walking towards the cross.

By the West Pallant entrance, suddenly a Labrador-type dog was barking loudly and pulling its owner towards the wall.

THere were several people walking towards Southgate and we all smiled at each other and then we saw what was happening.

Chichester's incredible sculptures - Part two

by Lorna Still, Volunteer at the Novium Museum CHICHESTER is a growing town and all the following sculptures are outside the walls.

Beyond the Westgate, by Bishop Luffa School, there stood, until it collapsed a few months ago, the ‘Roman Archway’ designed and made by Richard Farrington in collaboration with the school. THis marked the start of Centurion Way which was constructed 22 years ago.

THe route was once the Chichester to Midhurst Railway line and the path crosses the course of a Roman road. THe arch will be re-erected when it has been repaired. It is made from an ex-Royal Navy minesweeper and the figures have been inspired by designs at Fishbourne Palace.

Further along Centurion Way is the ‘Roman Amphitheatre’ created by Justin Marshall on the site of a former quarry and ‘THe Chichester Road Gang’ made from empty oxygen gas

cylinders by Cornish sculptor David Kemp.

THe group includes a ganger with a bowler hat, workers with spades and a surveyor with a theodolite. It has been erected on the site of old wagon loading bays.

Beyond this is the bridge before Lavant station (now flats) decorated with animal cutouts drawn by children from Lavant Primary School and reproduced in steel sheet by Richard Farrington.

THere are three bronze statues outside the Chichester Festival THeatre. By the restaurant stands the figure of Oedipus, a character from Greek tragedy, who has just blinded himself upon discovering that he has murdered his father and married his mother. THe sculptor is Trude Bunzl, who died in 1982.

On the grass by the picnic tables is Tom Merrifield’s balletic ‘Spartacus’, erected in 1988. THe sculptor had trained as a classical

dancer and the figure was inspired by the Bolshoi Ballet’s performance of the ballet of the same name.

THe goddess Minerva sits outside the Minerva THeatre, her helmet by her side. THis statue, by Philip Jackson, was erected in 1997 and commemorates Leslie Evershed-Martin, who founded the Chichester Festival THeatre.

Minerva was goddess of wisdom and the arts as well as war and the Minerva theatre was given its name because there had been a Roman temple dedicated to Neptune and Minerva in Chichester.

Chichester University has two interesting sculptures in its grounds. One is a cast aluminium abstract crucifixion over the entrance to the chapel, created by Geoffrey Clarke and unveiled in 1962 at the chapel’s dedication ceremony. John Skelton’s French limestone ‘Axis Mundi’ was unveiled in 1990 and is in the form of a Tau cross. THe vertical block represents life and the horizontal the afterlife.

St Richard’s Hospital has placed many sculptures in its courtyards to cheer patients, including a life size resin figure of Leonard Bernstein conducting vigorously

by Vincent Gray (1996). Dean Walter Hussey commissioned Bernstein’s ‘Chichester Psalms’, which were performed at the cathedral in Bernstein’s presence during the Southern Cathedrals Festival on July 31, 1965.

Bernstein’s centenary is being celebrated this year.

On the wall outside Sainsbury’s is another work by John Skelton. It is a granite mural with a map of the district including the location of various Sainsbury stores, some

light-hearted history and a visual pun on the name ‘Birdham’. THis was placed on the North Street store in 1961, then moved to the new Westhampnett store in 1986. It was the only item to survive the 1993 fire there, and was restored and re-sited at the present store in 1994.

THe stone obelisk in Westhampnett Road was given by the second Duke of Richmond and erected in 1745 to mark the north-east boundary of the city. Vandals overturned it almost immediately because of a rumour that a gold sovereign had been buried underneath it.

A realistic bronze crucifix (1963) was placed over the main door of the Catholic Church of St Richard in Market Avenue. THis was produced by father and son Philip and Michael Lindsey Clark. THe window behind contains Loire glass made in Chartres. Father Langton-Fox, who commissioned the works, had close links with Chartres, which is twinned with Chichester.

Near the canal basin are two giant butterflies with a third opposite Poyntz Bridge. THese were created by Steve Tomlinson (2013) under direction from the local community.

Inside their wings are aspects of canal life past and present, such as wildlife, canal boats and bicycle wheels.

More than 50 other sculptures can be seen at the twenty-six acre Cass Sculpture Foundation in Goodwood. THis is a notfor-profit organisation, founded in 1992

by Wilfred and Jeannette Cass, which commissions and sells large-scale works by contemporary sculptors so the works on display are constantly changing.

PostSport Falcons come out swinging and swoop for first silverware of season THE softball season may only be a few weeks old but Chichester Falcons have already swooped for their first silverware.

After a busy winter of indoor games, the Oaklands Park-based team headed to Portsmouth last weekend for their first outdoor tournament of the new season SSL Firstball.

True to form, the Falcons came out swinging.

In the group stages, Ally Warr and James Mortimore led the Falcons’ offensive charge, consistently slugging the ball deep into the outfield. As usual, the Falcons defence was tight on the opposition, marked by a series of catches in deep left field by Warr.

Ben Sawkins flashed some quick moves at shortstop and Veronika Green gunning the ball to Lucy Morris who made some dazzling stretches to beat out the runners at first base.

In the quarter-final, clever base coaching and a pep-talk from player/manager David Morris turned the tide in a low scoring game against the multiple league trophy-holding OAPs. Returning to their 'small-ball' strategy of manufacturing runs one hit at a time, the Falcons loaded the bases at the bottom of the last innings for Seita Sawasaki to blast a grand

slam 'sayonara home run' to take Chichester into the semis.

THe semi-final with Southsea Sharks turned into a great display of softball and sportsmanship.

Player/coach James Wheeler smoked the Sharks right fielder with a laser hit, bringing two runners home.

But a great relay from the Sharks had their pitcher, Andy Burgess, and Wheeler colliding with a big tag out at home plate.

After the two former Arun Panthers dusted themselves down and hugged it out, the bottom of the innings saw the defensive play of the tournament with Sawasaki and catcher Bronte Harvey showing some incredible game smarts in completing a remarkable trick double play.

Falcons made it to the cup final where they were finally bested by the Itchen Knicks but not without a fight. With bases loaded, pitcher Jason Mercer, crushed a home run way out into left, bringing in four runs to keep the game close but Knicks took the cup 16-10.

It is a good start to the campaign for the Falcons and promises plenty as the relatively rookie side continue to develop their all round game.

CRICKET: Middleton CC kick off their new Sussex Division One season tomorrow when they welcome Roffey to the Sports Ground (12pm).

Sean Heather's side performed well in the county's top tier last season finishing seventh in the ten-team league.

THeir opponents in the opener will be wanting to start well as they seek to better last season's second-place finish.

Elsewhere, in Division Two Chichester Priory Park host Lindfield at Goodwood (12.30pm), while Bognor travel to Haywards Heath (12.30pm).

Dragonflyers duo seal top five finish

THE future looks bright for Dragonflyers pair Lucy Hijmans and Libby Morton who put in a top performance in their first pairs performance.

Competing against teams from all over the UK at the competition in Southampton, the duo finished an incredible fifth position in the league's under-14 synchro event.

With the pair beating a number of UKranked female, male and mixed pairings, their immaculate timing gained them important points towards national finals.

In another strong showing for the Bognorbased Dragonflyers, team mates Izzy Hauxwell, aged 15, and 13-year-old Sofija Kalnicenko finished eighth in the under-18 synchro event. It was the pair's first attempt at this level and saw them take much-needed national ranking points.

Kalnicenko went on to take second position in the individual 13/14 League 1 contest over two routines. She later took the bronze medal in the final jump-off with her 8.3 difficulty

routine.

Hauxwell, participating for the first time at L1, finished 13th in the 15/16 yrs category.

Rosie Budge, who made the jump to L2 this season, and jumping a six tariff along with team mate Libby Morton, were also among the Dragonflyers trampolinists gaining individual points towards the Sheffield finals in November.

Coach Linda O'Leary described the team performance as 'a fantastic achievement'.

She added: "Dragonflyers are a tiny gym and club mark trampoline club with an excellent safety record who enjoy tremendous success at not only regional but national and international level.

"THe club is going from strength to strength.

We are now offering recreational sessions and anyone interested in trampoline lessons can see the full details on our website."

Dragonflyers hold sessions at THe Regis School for varying abilities throughout the week.

ATHLETICS: Chichester were edged out in their opening Southern Athletics League fixture of the season at Andover.

Coming just a week after the final event of the winter programme, the Sussex Road Relays, clubs have had very little time to prepare for the track and field outdoor season.

Nevertheless, all four clubs in the match - Chi, Worthing, Winchester and Andover - produced performances of high quality for this mid-April fixture.

Chichester made a great start to the 36-event programme over nearly five hours of competition and were leading the others in the early stages.

However, weaker events during the latter stages meant they were overhauled and had to settle for fourth place, more than 30 points behind Worthing in third and nearly 50 fewer than the hosts who won the meet.

It would be no surprise, however, if this proved to be Chichester’s toughest match of the whole season and the club is already looking forward to the next league match on May 20 at Poole.

It came as no surprise that Chichester’s in-form middle distance runners should be the most successful of the afternoon, with a clean sweep in both 800 and 1500 metres.

Ben Collins used his natural speed and a return to fitness to win the 'A' string 800m in fine style in a time of 2.01.2 and getting the better of his Winchester rival down the home straight with a convincing burst of speed to win by over a second.

Liam Dunne, in his first match for the senior team, won the 'B' race while Will Broom took the honours in the 1500m.

Other standout performances saw Max Lambkin win the gruelling 400m hurdles the club's second place in the javelin.

THe women's team were led by university pair Jenny Jakeman and Rebecca Brown, who scored an unexpected double win in the opening track race, the 400m hurdles.

Together with the double men’s win, this represented the first occasion that Chichester have gained maximum points from the two events.

Jenny was not finished on the track as she teamed up with another new under-17, Maggie King, in the 400m, with Maggie doubling up after running the 800m earlier in the day.

Sophie Wright used her recent good cross-country form to post a good time in the 3000m while Florence Smith and Maggie King added useful points to the club total in the field.

Overall, the match provided a springboard for the rest of the season with a greatly strengthened squad in prospect for the next fixture.

RUGBY: Chichester Rugby Club will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, May 23, in the Oakland Pavilion, from 7.30pm.

All members are invited to attend and select the new committee for the 2018/19 season.

THe annual general meeting for the mini and junior section of the club has been arranged for Monday, May 14, beginning at 7:30pm.

Top six still a target for Chi City Ladies despite double defeats

Pagham seek final revenge PAGHAM will be looking for derby day revenge as they lock horns with Chichester City just four days after a cup final drubbing.

THe Lions were shocked on Wednesday when their near neighbours defeated them 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup Final at Lancing's Culver Road.

Two goals apiece from Jimmy Wild and Dave Herbert sealed the victory for the Oaklands Park side.

Pagham's woes were completed in injury time when Ryan Cox was dismissed.

With Chi visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) for the final SCFL Premier match of the season, Pagham chairman Tony Shea believes his side will be able to bounce back and finish the campaign on a high.

He said: "We are obviously disappointed with the result.

Chi played well and we didn't turn up.

"We can play better than that, we're really disappointed but we have had a really great season and I'm happy with the way things are.

"THere will be an extra incentive to get a result tomorrow. It's been a long, hard season for both sides so

I'm hoping it's competitive and played in the right way.

"We will wait and see what happens. While we cannot make any movement in the league, I will want some revenge from the cup defeat."

Despite the heavy loss in the cup final, it has been an excellent season for the Lions under their new managers.

THe joint management team of Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen have steered the young side to a top three finish in the very competitive county league.

Despite a run of just one defeat in 21 league games, it was not enough to seal a promotion spot.

But the 3-0 win against Hassocks last weekend thanks to Ryan Davidson (2) and Cox meant Pagham will finish above their rivals.

Central to the Lions' strong form has been a lethal streak in front of goal which made them the league's top scorers with 99 and the team with the best goal difference (+58).

If they collect the victory tomorrow, then they will finish five points behind secondplace THree Bridges and six behind champions Haywards Heath.

CHICHESTER City Ladies are still aiming for a top-half finish despite suffering two setbacks in the last week.

Matt Wright's side have put in a strong showing in their first season at the FA Premier League South level.

With three games left to play, City are eighth in the 12-team division and can potentially seal a top six finish.

But those hopes suffered a blow in the past week when they endured two defeats in four days.

THe first was a disappointing 3-0 home loss to Coventry United on Sunday, their second defeat to the Midlands outfit in a fortnight.

THat was followed by a 6-0 loss to titlechasing Charlton Athletic on Wednesday at Oaklands.

THe week was made worse when captain Emma Alexandre was stretchered off in the first-half of the Coventry match because of a knee injury and looks set to miss the remaining games this term.

THe Green and White Army hope to get back on track on Sunday when they welcome second-bottom Queens Park Rangers to Oaklands Park (2pm).

CHICHESTER City ended the season with title celebrations at Oaklands Park - although it was not the party they were planning.

Miles Rutherford's side spent much of the SCFL Premier campaign with the belief that they would lift the league title.

But a poor run around Easter saw Chi slip off the pace, leaving it to Haywards Heath to seal the crown with a convincing 6-1 victory at City's expense on Saturday.

It was a day to forget for Rutherford's depleted side, with Kieran Hartley and Rob Hutchings both seeing red.

Only Lorenzo Dolcetti brought some cheer to the Chi fans with a consolation in the second half.

City, who are now seventh, went a long way to amending the loss with the 4-0 cup victory over Pagham in midweek. THey face the Lions again tomorrow at Nyetimber Lane (3pm) knowing that a win will seal a final league position of fifth.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham remain well in the hunt for a return to senior football after inflicting only the third league defeat of the season on leaders Rustington.

A second-half strike from Dan Bassil sealed all three points for Daren Pearce's side in the rearranged match on Wednesday and lifted Sids up to second in the league.

With a top-two finish required for promotion, Sidlesham will be hoping to hold off the chasing pack as they complete their fixtures.

THey travel to Upper Beeding tomorrow (3pm) before a Bank Holiday Monday clash with Bosham (11am).

With three points separating Sids in second and the Robins in sixth, Pearce's side know they will need to rack up six points or risk leaving things to fate.

Bosham's clash with their near neighbours on Monday will be their third match in five days. Last night they played Rustington in the final of the Division Two cup final at Nyetimber Lane hoping to win the trophy for the second time in three years.

THat will be followed by a trip to Cowfold tomorrow (3pm) before that rearranged grudge match with their local rivals.

Having won the league title last season it has been a season of transition for the Robins under new manager Gary Lines.

An excellent run since Christmas has seen them surge up the standings and they could still seal second spot.

Saturday's 1-0 victory over Worthing Town, thanks to Alex Barnes' second half strike, was their tenth victory in a row in all competitions.

Pearce explains FA's Wembley decision THE MOST influential man in Sussex football says the FA's planned sale of Wembley is not as clear cut as it has been presented.

Media reports suggest the Football Association is considering a bid from Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham owner Shahid Khan to sell the national stadium in a deal worth ÂŁ800m.

THe move could revolutionise English grassroots football and see widespread investment at youth, women’s and men's clubs across the area.

It has been reported that a deal could be completed in the next three months.

But Jack Pearce, who is manager at Bognor Regis Town and is one of just three national game representatives on the FA Board, said

that much remains up for discussion.

Pearce said: "At the moment, lots of what's in the national press is not necessarily as accurate as it sounds.

"All we have done at the FA is instruct our executive to continue negotiations, ask some fundamental questions and come back with some concrete guarantees that secure anything that we may decide on for next 40 to 50 years. THat will take a good period of time.

"THere will be benefits and negatives but until we have answers to those important questions no one could honestly give a yes or no at this moment in time.

"THere are far too many incomparables at this time."

Pearce focuses on positives as Bognor finish rock bottom BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes there's plenty of positives to take into next season despite finishing rock bottom this term.

A 2-1 home defeat to second-placed Dartford rounded off a disappointing National South campaign for the Nyewood Lane side.

Hopes were high at the start of the season that Bognor could put up a strong showing on their return to step two.

But after 42 games they found themselves bottom of the league and condemned to a swift return to the third tier.

But, providing a core of players remain at the club, the veteran manager believes the Rocks will be in a good position to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Pearce said: "We were the worst team at scoring goals and worst team at conceding them and those two things say you will finish bottom.

"But we were most probably in the top three in terms of controlling games through possession football.

"No one understands more than me that's a waste of time unless you create something.

It's a good base to start from as without that the only thing left are goals.

"Having said that, I have taken a lot of pleasure how hard the players have worked and the way they have tried to play.

"THe aim at the start of the season was not

got relegated. We did - but that was down to injuries to five or six players and the lack of a goalscorer than the quality of the players.

We're aware of where we need to improve."

THe Rocks rounded off the season in front of a bumper crowd of just over 1,000 at Nyewood Lane. Visitors Dartford had hopes of sealing three points so they would overtake Havant & Waterlooville to win the league crown.

At one stage, it looked like they might do it as the Darts went into a 2-0 lead.

With Havant being held along the A27, the visiting fans from the banks of the THames had hopes of lifting the league title.

But a late Ollie Pearce penalty for the Rocks combined with a winner for the Hampshire side meant Dartford were left with a consolation place in the playoffs.

For the Rocks, the match summed up much of the campaign - a performance that belied their position as the league's worst side but with too few goals and points.

Pearce said: "It was a tight game but in this match [and the game against third-placed Chelmsford on Tuesday] we had more possession and we actually created more chances than the opposition.

"On Saturday if we had been two up after 15 minutes they could not have complained and from the behaviour of their managers you could tell they were concerned with their team.

"Unfortunately, we were left with one goal from the spot which is a major problem for us."

THe lack of goals was very obvious across the whole season.

After 42 matches, the side netted just 41 times, less than one a game. And when they did score, more often that not the opposition managed to equal or better their tally.

A return of five wins from 42 games was never going to be enough to secure safety - and true enough the Rocks were 16 points behind fourth bottom when the final tallies were totted up.

Pearce added: "It's a difficult league and there's not a lot of difference between any of the teams when you think our opponents were second and third. THey were not going through the motions, they were desperate to win the games. I'm delighted with the players' attitudes but one goal from 180 minutes of football - that's what needs improving."

Work on rebuilding the Rocks begins now.

Letters to a number of players that Bognor want to retain have been issued and Pearce says he hopes the core of the squad - between 10 and 12 - will re-sign for the next campaign.

Whether that will be in the Isthmian Premier or the Southern League is still to be decided.

THe FA will wait for the play-offs to be settled before they complete the reorganisation of the step three level.

'Dabba very difficult to replace' FOR 13 years he has been a constant presence on the sidelines at Nyewood Lane.

But from next season the Rocks will be missing one of their most influential figures.

First team coach Darin 'Dabba' Killpartrick has taken the decision to step away from the game for a short time in order to recharge his batteries and spend more time with his family.

As he was completing his lap of honour after Saturday's match, the sentiment from the Rocks' faithful was very obvious.

From the changing room to the terraces, all were agreed that Dabba will be missed.

Paying tribute to him after Saturday's match, manager Jack Pearce said: "He has been a fantastic servant to the club and will be very difficult to replace. We wish him well and, hopefully, he will miss football and wish to return to coaching in the near future.

"If he does, then we will always try and find a place for him in our club."

Pearce said the news did not come as a shock to him, indicating that Dabba had informed him of his decision back in the autumn.

His focus turns to the task of reshaping the Rocks' backroom staff. A new first team coach will be essential, a new manager, too, could also be on the cards.

I'M WRITING this just a couple of days after the end of the season and the 2-1 defeat to Dartford.

On the whole, I think the lads did very well and showed determination that we didn’t want a team celebrating on our patch.

We knew what we needed to do. We were the better side for the first half and I thought we defended well as a team until the first goal.

But to get back into it as we did was credit to the lads. We defended well and showed that we were up to the challenge.

At times like that, you cannot help but think about this time last year.

Obviously, Dartford had a lot of fans with them. But when you look around and you see teams preparing for the playoffs it is inevitable to think about the promotion last year.

Our fans were very quiet on Saturday, which is understandable given the results this year.

THey were great, though, when it came to giving Dabba a proper send-off.

Personally, it means a lot as he has been great for me.

He was the one that got me into Bognor all those years ago. He was my coach when I was 16 at college and he has played a big part in my career over the time I have been at the club.

He has put a lot of time and effort into it but sometimes there are other things that are important.

He's got a young family so he understandably wants to spend more time with them.

We found out about it on Tuesday just before the Chelmsford match and shortly after the message went up on Twitter. All the lads are gutted to see him go but we all know why he has done it.

You only need to look at what he has done and what he’s given up. It was a fantastic send-off and we all wish him the very best.

Dartford's match was the final one of three tough games to end the season.

Against Oxford City, I thought we were very poor. But in Chelmsford and Dartford we played two teams in the play-offs. THey have put other teams to the sword but they beat us by a solitary goal.

THat’s our season - not winning and not scoring.

THoughts now turn to next season and speaking to some of the other lads the general view is that most are keen to stay on for another season.

Obviously, a big thing will be the manager.

It will be crucial as we are a club with a number of young ambitious players and the lads do not want to be left with uncertainty about who's in charge.

As for me, I’ve been offered another year's contract. I've not signed yet as I need to look at what league the club is in.

I’ve taken on a lot more responsibility at work recently and with all the travelling from my school in Worthing to Bognor it has been difficult.

If Bognor are in the Southern League, then that could be a step too far for me.

I don’t want to leave the club but my main employer is my main focus and I need to think about that aspect of my career.

As soon as I know what league we are in then I will make a decision.

THe first step will be to speak to Jack and let the fans know and the reason behind it.

Regardless, personally, I just want to get fit again and playing football again.

I've really missed it this year - it's not too hard watching the team when they are playing well but it is incredibly hard when a team you care about is not doing well and there's nothing you can do about it.

I've started my own pre-preseason so I am fit and ready for the new campaign. I've had six months off with the shoulder so I can't wait to get back at it.
