Dealing with drugs at canal

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE action is being taken to tackle drug users at the canal in Chichester.

Drug users aged as young as 12 had been spotted at the canal basin which West Sussex county councillor Jamie Fitzjohn, for Chichester South, described as popular to users due to the

poor lighting and accessibility.

As reported in the Chichester Post in February, Cllr Fitzjohn set up a task force including Chichester District Council, West Sussex officers, residents' associations, parish councillors, police and the Canal Trust.

Benches in the area were removed to help deter culprits.

At Chichester City Council's meeting on Wednesday evening, Cllr Fitzjohn

said the problems were being dealt with thanks to the combined efforts of groups in the task force.

He said: “We know who the individuals are. The police are still investigating a number of individuals. They have been identified. They are aware of who they are.

"A warrant was issued and a full search was done on an individual.

have any drugs on them. However, the intelligence that they have been working on led them to the hall in Terminus Road.”

In January, police were successful in confiscating cannabis plants worth an estimated £377,000 from the property where 750 cannabis plants were discovered inside.

New homes in city worth £41 million

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk NEW HOMES on the Lower Graylingwell site will be worth over £40 million.

Lower Graylingwell is part of Homes England’s Direct Commissioning Initiative Partnership and the scheme will provide 160 new homes, all built using modern methods of construction.

Hill has partnered with Homes England to deliver the homes in Chichester, in a development with a gross development value of £41 million.

The scheme will be built through Home England’s direct commissioning initiative, which is designed to enable the Government to fast-track the building of homes on publicly owned land and diversify housing delivery.

The new development will see the construction of 112 properties for private sale and 48 for affordable rent and shared ownership homes, and is located in the grounds of the former Graylingwell Hospital.

It will comprise one and two bedroom apartments located in four three-storey apartment buildings, and two, three and four bedroom houses.

Designed by HTA Architects, the scheme will connect seamlessly with its immediate neighbours and the wider Chichester area, with many homes constructed in traditional red brick style and featuring large windows and high ceilings.

Construction, which is expected to begin in the next few months, will be focused on the utilisation of modern methods of construction, including

off-site manufacture of the pre-precast insulated floor units and a timber frame system.

Total build time is estimated at around 100 weeks, with the underlying structure and the frame of each building completed in a matter of weeks.

Greg Hill, deputy chief executive at Hill, comments: “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Homes England on their direct commissioning initiative at Lower Graylingwell.

"The programme is a significant milestone for both Hill and the wider industry and is the culmination of both housebuilders and government working together to unlock land and deliver more homes, more quickly.

"We hope to see the innovative approaches taken at this development serving as a blueprint to the wider industry.”

Martins Farmhouse, a 19th century ancient scheduled monument, currently lies derelict on the site. This building will be refurbished sensitively to form one of the four bedroom homes and will be extended to provide four reception rooms.

The development’s residents and the existing local community will also benefit from a variety of new communal facilities, including a community pavilion and cricket pitch, a shared community garden, dedicated play areas for children and a series of cycle and pedestrian paths.

Once complete, the communal facilities will be managed by Chichester Community Development Trust. Sales are expected to launch in late summer 2018, with the first homes expected to be complete in late 2018.

LEADING female jockey Hollie Doyle has been announced as the new ambassador for the 2018 season at Goodwood Racecourse.

Special events mark hospice's tenth walk Canal benches will be restored From page one

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SPECIAL events are being planned to mark the Moonlight Walk’s 10th anniversary on May 5, which raises vital funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice, in Chichester.

This year, organisers have unveiled plans for 2018’s famous nocturnal walk and aim to encourage 1,000 walkers to register for this key event in the city’s social calendar. An ambitious target of £100,000 has been announced to pay for specialist end of life care to help local people who are terminally ill.

Anniversary specials will include a party-style send off for walkers from the Westgate Leisure Centre from 9pm to 10.30pm with a light show and music.

Walkers can expect spectacles and

surprises around the five mile and ten mile Moonlight Walk routes, including three celebration stations.

A Moonlight Serenade Station will feature singer, Amy Fuller, of BBC fame who will be singing moonlight and love and romance songs.

A Starlight Walk Station along Broyle Road will create a starry spectacle close to the Chichester Festival Theatre. Trees will be decorated with lights and magical performers will entertain, performing circus skills dressed in luminous costumes.

The star attraction will be the stunning Show Globe, featuring special guest star, Nikki Kennett.

A Man on the Moon Station will honour the endeavours of space travellers, and in particular, the US astronauts who landed on the moon back in 1969.

Spacemen will be welcoming

the ten milers at the Friary Lane / Chichester District Council car park to a Moonlanding film show. The exploits of the town’s very own space travellers, Major Tim Peake and Sky at Night presenter, Patrick Moore, will also be celebrated.

There will be some surprise guests as well. Watch this space!

City council present grant cheques - see page four

A 29-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of producing controlled B drug cannabis and acquiring, using or possession of criminal property.

He was not charged for the offences, but later released into the custody of Immigration enforcement officers.

Cllr Fitzjohn continued: "It was a big production farm, so by stopping that, hopefully we will also be stopping some of the supply, too.

"What we have done, as part of the action group, is more communication between the group and working together.

"Chichester District Council and City Council have employed a community warden, at my request, who is now in situ, walking along the canal, talking to the young people.

"They have now also got a youth worker specialist and community's officer at Chichester District Council.

"I'm working with them to get into the schools because we already have relationships with the schools so we can start working with the parents as well.

"Everyone has to be involved with

this, to finally, once and for all, solve this problem and to help our young people so they don't end up going down this path.

"Once we see some improvement, we will monitor it. One of the reasons we didn’t feel it was right to put back the benches was due to the poor weather, because drug dealers don't go out in the rain either.

"Also, the work that has been going on at the Donnington footbridge means that part of the canal has been cut off anyway, so we felt that we haven't had a period of time of normality to assess it properly.

"We are now monitoring it. We have residents there who are monitoring it all the time to see how things are going and if improvements have been made.

"We will now put the back the bench at the bottom of South Bank by request of the residents there, which we totally understand.

"The other three benches will be reviewed in the hope that they will be put back in our July meeting.

"It shows that we are all working together to do something about it.

"Let's stop it before it becomes a problem. At the moment it is a situation, not a problem."

` Chichester rape A MAN has identified himself following a CCTV image being released in connection with a Chichester rape.

Officers released CCTV from the Nags Head pub in St Pancras, Chichester, in a bid to trace a man they thought might have vital information.

The man from the image made contact with officers and a voluntary interview has been arranged.

Police received a report that a 47-year-old woman had been the victim of a sexual assault in Priory Park, Chichester, on the evening of Saturday, April 7.

The investigation continues.

` Tangmere burglary POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a house in Nelson Close, Tangmere, which occurred sometime between 8am and 8pm on Tuesday, April 17.

An Ipad, a small quantity of cash and some personal items were taken.

Any witness or anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting serial 1453 of 17/04.

City council give out grant cheques

Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans, presented the cheques to representatives from the groups including Chichester City Band and Chichester City Tours.

Collecting the award on behalf of Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice was Luca Badioli. He said: "Without the contribution of the council, we would be unable to provide the service which we currently provide, so thank you very

Cllr Evans said: "You have your new offices now at Chichester District Council so you are in a really prominent place."

David Wright, from the Chichester City Band, collected the cheque for his organisation.

He said: "This money is destined to purchase additional instruments for our junior band which, I am proud to say, is going from strength to strength. We don't charge for children for tuition in rehearsals or to lend them instruments."

Cllr Evans added: "I have been to a number of your concerts and I have to say that the quality of music is brilliant."

Recent flooding and closures in city's multi-storey car park USERS of the Avenue de Chartres car park in Chichester have noticed flooding and closure of some sections of the parking areas recently.

The bottom section of the car park saw a period of extreme flooding with heavy rainfall.

This section was then closed forcing motorists to make a sharp turn right to exit the car park.

A spokesperson for Chichester District Council said: “We continue to work to resolve the flooding in Avenue de Chartres car park where

a power fault in South Street, caused the underground water pump (which drains the water from the car park) to stop working.

"While contractors have been on site working to reduce the flooding, the heavy rainfall had persisted and the water levels below the car park remained high, preventing access to the pump."

The lower section of the ground floor has now been cleared of water and re-opened and the issue with the pump resolved.

Hairdresser swaps scissors for sleeping bags on travels

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A HAIRDRESSER from a Chichester salon went on a different sort of holiday to raise money for charity.

Rachel Waller, a senior designer at Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester, took a long-planned ‘holiday’ in late February and March but it certainly wasn’t a leisurely break.

It began with two-and-a-half weeks of hard labour in the sweltering heat of a poverty-stricken part of Uganda as a volunteer at a school for 500 children, many of them orphans.

Then it was off to the chilly heights of the Himalayas where Rachel tackled a daunting trek to Everest base camp, raising well over £3,000 in sponsorship for Alzheimer's Research.

Rachel is now back on the salon floor but her time in Africa and Nepal has inspired her to plan future volunteering.

Later this year, or early in 2019, she hopes to spend another spell working at the school in Africa and has already started fundraising towards a school she hopes to help build for Nepalese children in Kathmandu.

During this year’s spell in Uganda, she and her partner Danny devoted most of their time to looking after children at the development school which has 500 pupils aged all the way from two years to

16, including about 200 boarders.

Rachel and Danny then spent their days creating a swing site and a football field and in the evening they taught sport, introducing the children to rounders.

She said: “It was all about being there for the children, putting a smile on their faces. They literally have absolutely nothing and the school is so short of equipment that the boarders sleep two or three in a bed, but they are the happiest young people I have ever met.

“It was heartbreaking when the time came to leave, we both felt we hadn’t had enough time there. The boarders have a choir and they sang to welcome us and then again when we were departing – I stood there with tears rolling down my cheeks."

Rachel arrived in Nepal where she spent a few days exploring Kathmandu and realised the poverty there was just as severe since the country was slow to recover from the devastating earthquake in 2015.

This was in the back of her mind as she set off for the start of the long and daunting trek to Everest base camp, flying on a tiny plan to Lukla, one of the most dangerous airfields in the world.

She said: “It was difficult going but gradual, six days to base camp and three days back down, a lot of it steep uphill stretches even when we were coming back down.

"We started at 2,800 metres and base

camp is 5,364 so we had a couple of days along the way to acclimatise to the altitude. I’m fairly fit and it wasn’t quite as challenging physically as I had expected, but mentally it was much harder."

“The views were amazing and constantly changing – it seemed almost

unreal. One minute you would be surrounded by cloud cover, then the cloud would suddenly clear and you would see a huge mountain in front of you.

"It was an incredible experience and wonderful to have raised over £3,000 for Alzheimer’s Research."

` Watch stolen POLICE would like to identify the woman in the picture after a £6,000 watch was stolen from a jewellers in Chichester.

The Rolex watch is believed to have been stolen around 1.10pm on Monday, April 9, at Ebony Jewellers, South Street, Chichester.

PC Jimmy Upton said: “The shop assistant was busy with another customer at the time of this woman entering the shop but when asked if she needed any assistance, she declined.

“It is believed she has reached over the counter top and taken the watch from underneath.

“We are appealing to anyone who recognises this woman or saw any suspicious behaviour in this area at the time to get in contact with us.”

Steve's on the right job track

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW chief executive officer has been appointed to the Heritage Railway Association to help the company handle its increasingly busy role, supporting railways and members across the UK. Steve Oates, from Chichester, was named as the new officer and speaking about the new position and opportunities ahead, he said: "Heritage railways are important. They are important to the nation’s visitor economy, attracting some 10 million visitors each year.

"They retain and nurture important skills, and employ some 4,000 people; they are important to local communities, providing interest and participation for around 18,500 volunteers.

"They are also important to the wider economy, together contributing over £250million of economic impact and, most importantly, heritage railways preserve and present a once essential part of this country’s rich transport landscape.

"I’m excited and extremely privileged to be appointed to head up and lead the heritage railway industry’s national

trade and membership organisation. I look forward to supporting our member railways, promoting and increasing the profile of all that they do, and helping to ensure we keep this important part of our nations' history alive and flourishing for current and future generations to experience and enjoy."

Stephen is an experienced and enthusiastic heritage railway man and for more than 30 years he’s worked with the award-winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway, most recently as chairman.

Heritage Railway Association (HRA) chairman Brian Simpson said: "We’re delighted to appoint Stephen to this exciting, challenging and new role within our organisation.

"His experience inside and outside the heritage railway sector gives him the kind of knowledge and experience that we felt the HRA needed at this time.

"I’m sure he’ll help us to develop the HRA for the future and, along with the rest of us, will provide guidance and help to our members when they require it.

"I’m looking forward to working with Stephen, for the benefit of all our members."

Stephen will have a hands-on involvement in all of the HRA’s work.

Sailing away at Itchenor club's open day with launch of dinghy VISITORS can attend an open day at Itchenor Sailing Club on Sunday, May 6, to officially launch its new 2000 Dinghy Sailing Experience.

The Chichester-based club will open its doors and welcome people of all ages and abilities to discover more about Itchenor and their new fleet of 2000 dinghies.

The highlight of the day will take place at 12 noon when the club’s new 2000 dinghies will be officially launched and the boats’ names will be announced.

The names were selected following a competition with the general public to send in their suggestions; winners will receive one month’s free membership to the sailing club as well as a neck gaiter from Rooster Sailing.

As part of the launch, complimentary bubbly and nibbles will be available and there will be live music on the bandstand.

free entry event will provide visitors with the opportunity to get advice from the club’s fully qualified RYA instructor about the training courses available at Itchenor for beginners, improvers and experienced sailors.

Members and class captains will also be available to answer questions and help those looking to take their first steps in trying this exciting and sociable sport.

Itchenor Sailing Club Commodore Neil Hart commented: “This is the first time we have offered an accessible sailing experience at Itchenor where boats can be hired for use.

by Chichester Lions THE 12 Easter eggs raffled off in Chichester by the Lions group have hatched ÂŁ1,052.08 for the Friends of St Richard's Prostate Cancer appeal.

Lion president Richard Cowell said the public had once again supported the Lions club and the activities committee should take a bow for their hard work running this event.

He said: "Once again, we have to thank the generous residents and visitors to Chichester for their support, especially The Four Chesnuts in Oving Road who took and raffled two eggs, raising ÂŁ200 alone."

The next event run by The Lions is the Swimathon which takes place at the Westgate Leisure Centre on Saturday, May 12.

Local clubs, schools and charities have signed up to swim as many lengths of the pool in just under an hour.

The Lions Club of Chichester organise the event by hiring the venue, sorting out the timetable and staffing the whole evening.

Importantly, participants keep all the sponsorship they raise and the club will raise a cheque for 100 per cent of the sponsorship money received in favour of the nominated charity or group.

The Lions will also present trophies to the teams that complete the most lengths (junior and senior) and get the highest sponsorship total (junior and senior).

Support moves up a gear as city MP joins in on bike ride

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FRIENDS of Centurion Way were joined by the city's MP on Friday for a cycle ride along the much-loved walking and cycling path.

Gillian Keegan, dressed in Conservative blue, joined over 20 other cycling enthusiasts for a summery cycle ride to Lavant and see the opportunity for a premium, safe, segregated walking and cycle route in and out of the city, from the cathedral to South Downs.

The group met at the Chichester Cross in the city centre at 2pm and travelled down West Street and met others at the start of the southern end of Centurion Way, at the railway footbridge by Bishop Luffa school.

Gillian Keegan said: "We are currently looking at transport and making sure that cycling is a key priority.

"There are lots of different projects going on and the crucial thing is to develop these.

"We don't get many opportunities to do something different and we need to coordinate everything to make something happen."

The Friends of Centurion Way's campaign to keep Centurion Way as an asset for Chichester communities continues to gain public supporters as it looks to work up its own suitable plans that can challenge the current draft plans

that have been shared to date by Miller & Linden Homes, developers of White House Farm.

The group believes these are lowquality and low-cost, with a diversion and serious downgrading of the Centurion Way old railway route.

Friends of Centurion Way group member, Philip Maber, said: "We have an opportunity to enhance the walking and cycling routes that connect into Centurion Way, especially the links into Chichester city centre.

"We are working hard to influence the planners and developers ahead of the upheaval associated with the forthcoming housing development. We know that Centurion Way will undergo changes when the new southern access road to White House Farm is built.

"Importantly, safe routes, free from road traffic, can be incorporated into the designs - for the benefit of everybody, and future residents of the new housing.

A safe, segregated cycle and pedestrian route that could allow future residents of White House Farm quick, safe and easy access to the city centre, stations, shops and other cycle routes, without needing to use their cars.

"We wanted to show Gillian how important Centurion Way is to our community and why we are campaigning to preserve and enhance the southern end of Centurion Way amidst the upheaval envisaged as part of the Whitehouse Farm development."

PropertyNews ` £758m spent on property in Chichester £758,052,834 to be precise. That was the huge amount of money spent on property in Chichester in 2017, according to recently released Land Registry data, which is 17 per cent more than was spent in 2016.

That has made 2017 a recordbreaking year in Chichester, surpassing the previous high (in 2014) of £755.6m-worth of property transactions.

This was largely bought about due to Chichester’s record-high average sale price of £374,347, which was 5.3 per cent higher than in 2016 (£355,445).

It also coincided with an 11 per cent increase in the number of transactions in 2017, too, with 2,025 properties being sold last year, compared to just 1,825 in 2016. While you may think this increase is impressive, it comes after a few years of declining numbers here in Chichester, with the volume in 2016 being nearly 20 per cent down on 2015, which was, in turn, eight per cent lower than in 2014.

It’s good, therefore, to see more sales within Chichester’s property market, even though we’re some way off matching the sales figures seen in the early ‘noughties’, with 20002007 all seeing a higher volume than there was in Chichester last year.

Considering the number of new homes built in Chichester since then, it is clear we are far below the number of properties you would expect a healthy Chichester property market to see sold.

Even so, I believe the upward trend should now continue as I am consistently seeing more properties for sale in Chichester compared with the 12 months before.

This increase also seems to be tempering the ever-rising house prices in Chichester, with average sale prices now back to where they were around a year ago. I’d predict, therefore, that in 12 months’ time I’ll be reporting that 2018 saw more properties changing hands, but not for much (if any) more than the average price seen in 2017.

Who is Next to leave city?

The premises provide sales areas on the ground floor and first floor, which is accessed via a staircase situated at the front of the ground floor sales area and a passenger lift at the rear. The second

A Next spokesperson said: "We can confirm the lease for Next is up for renewal in 2020. No firm decision has been made at this point."

The news comes after several other high street names have moved out of the city, including Laura Ashley, Swarovski, Thornton's and Mothercare.

Chichester Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans, said: "It will be a shame to see a main high street retailer moving out of the city if they do not renew their lease.

"I just hope, if this happens, it remains as a retail outlet and is not converted to another eatery or coffee bar. The building has seen many uses since first constructed as a cinema, from a fast food outlet and latterly Next Clothing.

"Chichester is a great place to shop and relax and this requires an eclectic and broad spread of businesses that will help produce a competitive and vibrant retail economy which in turn will attract more shoppers into our city."

` Disability project needs funding votes A PROJECT to learn about the everyday difficulties for those with a hidden disability or illness and then develop public understanding, needs funding votes.

'Hidden Stories' has the chance to get £45,000 from The Big Lottery Fund to take the project into a further nine locations across the south, including Chichester, and publish a free book.

The Big Lottery Fund's People's Projects have listed ‘Hidden Stories’ by Brighton-based organisation Root Experience in their regional final five, to get a share of £3 million in funding.

Hidden Stories needs at least 3,000 public votes to secure money to enable them to bring their workshops to towns including Chichester and gather real stories.

The stories will then become part of an illustrated book, a manual for change, freely distributed to help people understand what it’s like for a person living with an invisible illnesses, such as depression or ME. There will also be details on where help and information for the various conditions can be found.

Hidden Stories is about understanding how it feels to navigate the world with an invisible disability. The project began with creative workshops, where a group of individuals were invited to explore how life is for one another.

Voting is open and closes on April 30.

High flying marriage proposal

Dave Ratcliffe, who flies for Boutlbee Flight Academy, at Goodwood Aerodrome, saw a huge marriage proposal while in his Spitfire over a field near South Harting.

Former Royal Air Force pilot Dave ‘Rats’ Ratcliffe and one of his passengers got the extra surprise when they spotted the most romantic of messages adorning the hillside last week.

The Academy and their pilots were asking everyone they knew and reaching out via social media to try and uncover a little more about the proposal.

The suspect turned out to be Benjamin Wolfe, who popped the question in the unique way back in February and now says suddenly everyone is talking about it. He said: "About two weeks ago, a police helicopter saw the writing and circled the field and got some pictures and shared them on Facebook and now the Spitfire has too."

Benjamin, 29, from Alton, is a farmer and the field in South Harting belongs to one of four of his family's farms.

He commented the proposal wasn't planned and he hadn't ever thought about getting married until he met 24-year-old Lacey Jordan. He said: "I am surprised I don't know anybody else who has done this as I know a few farmers.

"I cultivated the field with my tractor to produce the 300ft letters across the ten acre field. I did it in the dark so she wouldn't see or know about it, I just had to plan it out so I knew it would fit. It took

me about two hours to do it.

"The trouble was that it was really foggy, you couldn't see more than 20 feet away without this thick fog so I was worried that it wouldn't clear and Lacey wouldn't see it.

"The next day I pretended to Lacey that I had to go to a tractor dealership and persuaded her to come with me. I pretended that we were a bit early so I suggested we went for a walk first.

"When she looked out at the words she didn't really say much at first, I think she was in shock but then she did say yes!"

Benjamin said it seems to be clearer from the air now as the weeks have moved on, but they won't be visible for much longer.

"I was going to plough

the field but haven't been able to because of the wet weather," he said. "I will be ploughing it soon but it will probably grow over before long."

Lacey added: "His proposal was amazing, we really believe we are soul mates and I'm so madly in love with him, of course I said yes straight away.

"I was totally shocked when I looked up across the valley to see the giant words 'Marry Me'. I have never felt such happiness before. I am so lucky to be marrying him and spending the rest of my life with Ben." The couple have already booked their wedding for May next year.

Chance given for say about fire service CONSULTATIONS are taking place about the future of the fire and rescue service in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

A six-week period has started in which residents are being asked for their views about the service's integrated risk management plan.

This outlines how the service intends to use its resources to help to protect the public in the future.

Drop-in meetings to explain the plan and to find out the public's opinions are taking place from 5pm-7pm on May 3 at Ede's House in Chichester and at the same time on May 8 at The Regis School in Bognor Regis.

The consultation lasts until May 28. Details of other meetings can be found on the county council's website: westsussexgov.uk/IRMP2018 Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "If you were to ask people to describe the work of firefighters, most people would probably talk about fighting fires and possibly dealing with road accidents.

"In fact, the service does a lot more than that, including dealing with many other types of rescues. It carries out safe and well visits, has a business fire safety team, works with teams across the

county council and with others in the community to make sure people are safe.

"We know the service will have to continually evolve to provide a first class emergency service.

"Some of the things we will have to consider include how to make the best use of resources."

The plan explains the fire and rescue service's activities in detail around prevention, protection, response, people, value for money and partnership and collaboration.

But campaigner Tony Morris has called on residents to tell the county council they want a significant improvement in the cover provided by the service.

Retired firefighter Mr Morris claimed: "Drastic cuts to our fire and rescue service have put residents and firefighters at greater risk, and this consultation hides even more cuts.

"This is a life and death consultation.

When people are in trouble, they need properly crewed fire engines to arrive quickly."

He has called on the public to list its priorities as ending cuts to fire engines and firefighters, fire engines to be normally crewed by firefighters, at least 30 fire engines available round the clock and no reduction in response standards.

TEN new animal welfare complaints across Sussex are being looked at by inspectors daily.

New figures have revealed the RSPCA investigated 3,811 alleged incidents of cruelty across the counties each day last year.

The figures have placed West Sussex - with 1,821 cases - as the eighth cruellest county in the south east in 2017. It was the 29th of the 47 counties across the country.

Patrick Hamby, the RSPCA's chief inspector who covers Sussex, said: "Our officers are stretched to the limit as we try to help all the suffering, sick and dying animals in our county.

"Even though I have been with the RSPCA for a very long time now, I am still shocked and saddened by the awful incidents of cruelty which our officers are dealing with, day in and day out."

The most calls in West Sussex related to dogs (935), followed by cats (412) and equines (265). This year sees the RSPCA focus on the plight of horses as animal rescuers and welfare charities struggle with a crisis of abandoned horses. Many of them are very sick, dead or dying.

Scouts turn out in force for St George HUNDREDS of Scouts filled Bognor Regis town centre for their biggest event of the year.

The parade of the town's Scouting members stretched beyond the length of the London Road precinct as they took part in their St George's Day celebration.

Some 500-600 Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Explorers aged from six to 25 turned out for the occasion on Sunday afternoon.

Bognor Regis Scouts' training manager Wendy Morris led the parade for the first time and praised all those who had taken part.

She told them: "This has probably been the most exciting thing I have done in my life.

"Well done everybody. You have done yourselves and your uniforms, your pack, your troop and your unit very proud."

She later added: "I love St George's Day. It's lovely to see all the Scouting family within the community.

"It shows the strength of Scouting. I told people taking part today they need to look back as we parade along the precinct and see how many of us there are - and we are still growing.

"Today was the first time for our 2nd Felpham pack. But we always need adult leaders. We have a waiting list for Scouts but we need the adults to lead them.

"Within Scouting, we encourage one another and give people the opportunity to do new things.

"Scouting doesn't ask us to be perfect.

It just asks us to do our best."

The parade left the London Road coach park and proceeded along London Road, into the precinct and the High Street to Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Clarence Road. It was standing room only in the church.

South Bersted was the duty guard for the day and staged a drama which retold the story of St George for modern times.

The parade followed the reverse route back to the coach park about 90 minutes later. Dignitaries inspected the parade from outside the former post office in the High Street.

They included Tim Taylor, Scouting's county training manager, Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall and Cllr Brian Knight, chairman of Bersted Parish Council.

Among the standards proudly on show was that for 1st Felpham Sea Scouts, carried for the first time by 12-year-old Daniel Boon on his third parade.

He said: "It was exciting to be the standard bearer. It was heavy but I managed to carry it all right.

"It was nice to see the

smiles on all the young children's faces who were taking part for the first time.

"Today is a proud moment to celebrate the tale of St George, because he was strong and courageous."

1st Felpham Sea Scouts Leader Chris Broeham was taking part in about his tenth parade.

He said about 16 of its Scouts, 30 Cubs and 12 Beavers were involved in the parade.

"This enables people to see how big Scouting is in the Bognor Regis district and how well supported it is - to see all these children taking part," he said.

Centre's celebration of day PATRIOTISM turned a Bognor Regis centre red and white this week.

St George's Day on Monday was celebrated in the Laburnum Centre with an afternoon of music, words and drama.

The centre's hall and dining area were decked in the flag of St George and audience members also had flags to wave.

Ann Ashley, 78, a member of the Laburnum Singers, was chosen to sing a solo version of Rule Britannia to enhance the English atmosphere of the occasion.

She said: "It's the first time I've performed with the singers and I only found out I was singing solo three days ago.

"I am a bit nervous but singing here is great because it give your lungs a workout and you make a lot of friends."

The singers' performance also included Land of Hope and Glory, Jersualem and a selection of songs from the 20s and another from the 30s.

Comedy was provided by the six-strong troop of the Laburnum Drama Group with their Daylight Robbery and The Mobile Library sketches as well as the mime story of The Park Bench.

One of their actors, Margaret Holland, 70, said: "We had some sketches and we played around with them. We've been going for a year-and-a-half and this is our

third show at the centre.

"We are always searching for new members."

` Rural crime survey VILLAGERS around Chichester and Bognor Regis have been urged to take part in national rural crime survey.

The latest survey went live for comments last week. Sussex Police wants those who live and work in or visit the area's rural communities to make their voices heard.

In late 2017, the force appointed Superintendent Emma Brice and Sergeant Tom Carter as dedicated lead officers for crime and crime concerns in the countryside.

Supt Brice said: "A large proportion of Sussex residents live, work in or visit rural areas regularly and we really want to hear your views on issues related to rural policing and crime. We know that there are certain types of crime and areas of vulnerability which impact rural communities and businesses differently from those in urban areas."

It has been three years since the first national rural crime survey took place.

Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne said: "It's vital that the voice of rural communities is heard by those who can make a difference - from the police to government."

One of the focuses of this year's survey is whether rural crime continues to be under-reported.

"Three years ago, one in four people who responded to the survey nationally said they didn't report the last crime they'd been a victim of because they didn't see the point.

"This is an uncomfortable thing to hear, and for all those involved in protecting rural areas, so it's important we ask these questions again and find out whether people are more willing to report crime and feel safer," she said.

Chance for more facts on funding WORKSHOPS are being held to enable Post area residents to find out more about a new way of funding.

West Sussex Crowd has been started as a crowdfunding platform to enable individuals to share community ideas and neighbours, local businesses and other interested parties have the chance to pledge their support to make the idea a reality.

Two of the workshops will take place in Chichester and Bognor Regis. The first will be at Swanfield Community Centre in Chichester from 9.30am11.30am on May 15. This will be followed in Bognor Regis from 10ammidday on May 18 at the Regis Centre.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, cabinet member for safer, stronger

communities, said: "This is a really exciting time for groups and projects in the West Sussex.

"If you have an idea which will benefit your community, whether it's a renovation project, a festival or even equipment for a club, then upload it to West Sussex Crowd.

"Groups have already started using the site (westsussexcrowd.org.uk) and I hope we will see many more crowdfunding campaigns launch on there soon."

The county council is making £330,000 of its community initiative fund available to pledge to projects on the site.

This will replace its previous funding initiatives like the small grants fund.

A MINI Rolls-Royce has received its first year's service at the company's Goodwood factory where it was built.

The special scaled-down replica was given a clean bill of health by engineers after 12 months of being driven by young patients at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, to their operations.

An average of one child a day has motored to the operating theatre in the Rolls-Royce SRH model. It has performed faultlessly through the paediatric unit corridors, which are lined with 'traffic signs'.

Sue Nicholls, the hospital's paediatric matron, said: "We've received fantastic feedback from families who've expressed how excited their children have been at the prospect of coming on to the day surgery unit to drive our Rolls-Royce motor car.

"Rather than being anxious about their upcoming procedure, our young patients are positively distracted by the fun experience of negotiating the corridors to the theatre in a car they can drive all by themselves.

"We've also noticed that dads,

especially, love to admire the engineering and design specification and often ask for a turn. The whole experience of being in hospital for those children, and their loved ones, is enhanced by having the opportunity to drive such a special car."

Rolls Royce Motor Cars' head of corporate relations, heritage and philanthropy, Andrew Ball, said: "We are delighted that the Rolls-Royce SRH has delivered successfully on its promise making a positive impact on children and their patients during their time in hospital."

If appropriate, encourage positive reminisces about history relevant to the Patient: e.g. where they were born, stories, jobs, news and friends. The volunteer will need to have a genuine interest in people and wanting the person with Dementia to have the best possible hospital experience; and confidence in

A taste of honey will soothe sore throats in natural way THE SUN may be shining, but there are plenty of bugs around that can potentially make you feel pretty unwell.

Spring viruses can take you by surprise, and I have seen a lot of people at the moment suffering from colds and sore throats, but especially tonsillitis seems rife. If you find yourself suffering, the most important thing you can do is to keep your immune system fighting fit.

Get plenty of sleep, and while you are feeling unwell, try to remove any excess stress from your life, and even lay off your exercise regime for a few days until you start to feel better.

Tonsillitis is a situation in which the throat of a person is inflamed. Two oval-like tissue pads in the back of the throat can cause this pain and discomfort. These soft tissue pads are located in your lymphatic system, which is the human body’s first line of defence against all kinds of alien bodies and infections. The tonsils are responsible for the production of blood cells, which can prevent bacteria and virus from entering your body through your mouth.

Most people think that making a trip to the doctor would make the throat inflammation go away with a prescription of antibiotics, but this is not the case, necessarily.

If the infection is viral, the antibiotics will be ineffective, so you may need to look for alternative, more natural solutions. When it comes to tonsillitis, it's important to cure those tonsils permanently, because re-occurring infections can be common.

Here are my top two natural home remedies for you to try: 1 - Honey and garlic together are probably a tailormade gift for your throat straight from nature. Garlic is naturally antiseptic with immense levels of curing powers, while honey can provide soothing effects to your tonsils.

They are both antimicrobial as well as antibacterials. They fight against the infections and viruses that are known to cause the problem. They will effectively tackle the issue of tonsils by healing your throat inflammation. If you are in search of the best tonsil treatments, this should always be on the top of your list.

Simply take two to three cloves of garlic. Peel the garlic, wash and then crush it to make a paste. Add about two teaspoons of honey to this paste of garlic.

My final white, part of the Irresistible range, was a 2016 Chardonnay from Western Australia courtesy of esteemed winemakers Larry Cherubino and Rob Merrick.

This well-crafted wine exudes orchard fruit along with creamy nuttiness, has fresh acidity and great minerality and would be an ideal accompaniment to

smoked salmon or roasted white meats and is one I thoroughly commend to you!

For £18.99, the Les Pionniers Champagne Brut is a veritable gem, being creamy and complex with citrus and white apple flavours and also has biscuity notes, a hint of brioche and toast and culminates in a long dry finish - a no-brainer at this price!

Three reds then caught my attention, with a Hereford Tempranillo Malbec, on offer for just £4.99, a bargain buy from Argentina which is pleasingly unpretentious with a nice, soft texture.

I recommend opening for an hour before imbibing to fully appreciate a smooth wine bursting with lashings of youthful sweet red fruit - a decent tipple at such a low offer price!

1. Combine spring onions, orange juice, ginger, chilli, lime juice, soy sauce, garlic, allspice, cinnamon and cloves. Add chicken, and marinate for 8 hours.

Method 1. Make sure the egg whites are room temperate before starting. Beat egg whites at low speed in a mixer with the whisk.

2. Add the granulated sugar and whip the egg whites and sugar completely stiff. To see if they are stiff enough, try to turn the bowl upside down, they will not run out (or check with a whisk that the merengue form stiff peaks). Turn in the white wine vinegar with a spatula, carefully at last.

Community News & Views PEOPLE living in West Sussex are being urged to say what they really think in a new survey.

The latest version of What Matters to You? is being run by the county council to find out the views of residents and businesses on all its services. These range from highways to libraries to social care and the fire and rescue service.

The council spends more than ÂŁ500m a year of taxpayers' money on its services for 821,000-plus residents.

It stages the survey every two years and the current questions will be available until July 16. They give people the chance to influence how the council shapes its services, what its main priorities should be and how its budget is set.

Participants are asked to select their top three areas from the West Sussex Plan 2017-2022, which sets out the county council's focus. They will also be asked their views about the future level of council tax.

West Sussex County Council leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, said: "As an elected member, I am here to put into practice what people in the county need and want.

"I am here to represent our residents and businesses and make their life a little bit easier with the decisions we make.

"Getting people's views into the way we work and what we focus on is vital if we are to continue to offer our residents the very best services and the best value for money."

The last survey results urged the council to focus on giving children and young people the best start in life, ensuring West Sussex is a prosperous place, creating strong, safe and sustainable communities, support in later life and making a council which works for its communities.

COELIACS from around the county will be celebrating in Bognor Regis next month.

Dozens of members of Coeliac UK will enjoy a family day out on May 5 at Butlin's to celebrate the charity's 50th anniversary.

Families from across the south of England will enjoy a range of activities. They will include a gluten-free lunch prepared by Butlin's chefs as well as the attractions on the site.

Anna Henderson, pictured above, organiser of the Coeliac UK West Sussex Group, said: "We are organising this event so that, for one day, both children and parents can relax and have fun together just like any other family - free from worry about their special dietary requirements as they tuck into a wholly glutenfree lunch and enjoy a gluten-free cupcake tea later.

"All 150 tickets have already sold out and we have a long waiting list. So, this shows how important it is for families to have the opportunity to get together, enjoy safe, gluten-free food and meet other families - and also help celebrate the 50th anniversary."

Coeliac UK is the national charity for people who need to live without gluten, whether because of coeliac disease or another medical condition requiring a gluten-free diet.

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition caused by a reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

People diagnosed with the disease must maintain a strict gluten-free diet for the rest of the life to avoid complications such as osteoporosis, infertility and, although rare, small bowel cancer.

Coeliac UK chief executive Sarah Sleet said: "Fifty years ago, little was known about coeliac disease and the gluten-free diet.

Bread used to come in a tin and people wrongly thought children would grow out of the autoimmune disease.

"Fast forward to today and both the disease and the diet are firmly on the worldwide map and 150,000 diagnosed people in the UK now live a better way of life thanks to improved recognition and diagnosis."

A SUCCESSFUL year of fundraising has seen Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Chichester raise more than ÂŁ26,000 for a charity.

The luxury car maker has presented the result of its support for Coastal West Sussex Mind by handing over a cheque for that amount to some of its representatives.

The money will help to fund the charity's support network for young people, adults and families in the area.

Coastal West Sussex Mind provides a support service for those experiencing mental health issues. It also works to challenge stigma and discrimination about mental health and offers training support for businesses wishing to increase mental health awareness in the workplace.

Katie Glover, Coastal West Sussex Mind's chief executive, said the funds would make a real difference to its work.

"We are overjoyed to receive such a generous amount from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and we are very grateful indeed.

"At Coastal West Sussex Mind, our belief is that no-one should have to face a mental health issue alone and these funds will help us continue to support local people who are facing mental health difficulties," she said.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' director of manufacturing, Frank Ludwig, said: "We are delighted to celebrate a successful year of fundraising for Coastal West Sussex Mind.

"We are humbled that our efforts will ensure the operation of the charity's local support network."

Employees at the car maker created some igenious fundraising activities. These included abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, a chilli plant growing competition, sponsored runs and creating hundreds of personalised hand-crafted leather items.

They have chosen The Ickle Pickles Partnership and its work supplying lifesaving equipment to neonatal units as their latest charity.

RESIDENTS of Chichester are again being offered the chance to improve their health in a few minutes.

The city's Rotary Club is joining forces with the Stroke Association to help to raise awareness of one of the biggest risk factors for stroke - high blood pressure.

They are staging free blood pressure tests from 11am-3pm tomorrow at the Old Court House (Assembly Room) in North Street, Chichester.

More than half of all strokes can be caused by high blood pressure and it is estimated more than five million people of all ages across the UK do not realise they have the condition.

Vivienne McGavin, president of Chichester Rotary Club, pictured below, said: "For the sixth year running, the club is running the 'know your blood pressure' day.

"It's all about raising awareness of the link between high blood pressure and the serious disabling effect of stroke.

"Stroke strikes every five minutes in the UK but, with events like ours, we hope to change this.

"In the previous five years, we have been able to advise 264 people (out of 809) to take medical advice and to identify some serious conditions.

"A blood pressure test is quick and painless and it could save your life. We invite everyone, young and old, to come to our event. We will even look after your children while you're tested."

The Stroke Association's Alexis Wieronley said: "High blood pressure often has no symptoms and it's much common than people think.

"That's why we're urging as many Chichester residents as possible to take a moment and have theirs checked at Chichester Rotary Club's event tomorrow.

"A blood pressure test only takes about 10 to 15 minutes and it's such as simple way to reduce your risk of a stroke."

A stroke is a brain attack which happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain.

There are more than 152,000 strokes in the UK each year that works out at around one every five minutes. More than 1.2 million people in the UK are living with the effects of stroke.

Stroke Association is working to conquer stroke by working with health and social care professionals, scientists and researchers. It funds research to develop new treatments and ways of preventing stroke.

Chichester's incredible sculptures - Part one

by Lorna Still, Volunteer at the Novium Museum THERE are some interesting older sculptures in Chichester, but in recent years the city streets and courtyards have been decorated with many newer ones which reflect the city’s rich history. The sculptures described below are all within, or very close to, the city walls.

Starting at the cathedral, there is local sculptor Philip Jackson’s larger–than-life bronze St Richard, unveiled in June, 2000.

He stands near the West Door, hand raised in blessing and is illuminated to throw an impressive shadow on dark evenings. St Richard was the first Bishop of Chichester.

The early 16th century Market Cross has empty niches which once contained statues, probably of bishops, as there are mitres carved beneath them. These were destroyed

by Parliamentarian soldiers following the Siege of Chichester during the Civil War. A bronze bust of Charles I by Le Sueur was placed on the side facing East Street after the Restoration of Charles II. The original is now in the Council House and a fibreglass copy has been placed on the Cross.

On the Crane Street wall of Sussex House is a ceramic panel with sculptural elements depicting Minerva and various birds. This is by Yvonne Hudson Rusbridge, who lived in Earnley, and it was erected in the 1970s.

The dedication stone of a Roman temple to Neptune and Minerva had been discovered nearby in 1723 and the stone placed in the wall of the Council House.

At each end of Crane Street is a steel crane, one standing and one in flight. This was a Chichester BID environmental project, unveiled in April, 2016. A Coade Stone Druid sits in Priory Park, now sadly minus an arm, but there are plans to restore him.

He originally stood on the conduit in South Street and the informative inscription tells us he was ‘afterwards for many years in the cathedral vault of Mr William Guy, surgeon…

It was presented to the Priory Park Society by his grandson, Dr William Augustus Guy, of King’s College London, and erected on this spot May 31, 1873’.

At the Priory Park end of Little London is the ’Symbol of Discovery’ by John Skelton, unveiled in 1963. It was commissioned by Stanley Roth, the architect who designed the museum there, and depicts two giant hands of Kirkstone Westmoreland green slate holding a ’jewel’ of gold leaf set in Perspex. There was a plaque set in the cobbles saying ‘Museums present to the world the precious offerings of the earth’, but this was removed when the museum moved to Tower Street in 2012.

The flats in Shippam Street look down on ‘Olive and Oyster’ by Michael Johnson (bronze, stainless steel and mosaic, 2013).

The food theme was chosen because the flats are built on the site of the Shippam food factory which closed in 2002. The olives represent the Roman history of Chichester, while the oyster shell refers to the Chichester oyster beds. There are bronze inlays designed by local schoolchildren and the base includes castings of objects to do with Chichester industries such as needlemaking.

The house where he started writing ‘The Eve of St Agnes’ stands across the road behind him. He was staying with the parents of his friend Charles Dilke and there is a discreet plaque on the building. The bronze statue, by local sculptor Vincent Gray, was unveiled by Patricia Routledge in August 2017.

Close by, tucked away by the Richmond House arch in Church Square, stands

‘Nurture’ by self-taught sculptor Neil Lawson Baker. It was erected in January 2014 and depicts an adult holding a child.

St Mary’s Hospital (entrance in St Martin’s Square) was founded in the 13th century, but major reforms were made by Dean Fleshmonger in the 16th century, at which time there were five residents, two men and three women. Additional almshouses, named St Mary’s Courtyard, were opened in 2003 and Helen Sinclair created a bronze group of two men and three women holding hands in a circle.

The stone birds on the gate of the Queen Anne building Pallant House are meant to be ostriches as these were featured on the family crest of the owner, wine merchant Charles Peckham. However, the sculptor had never seen an ostrich and the house was nicknamed ‘Dodo House’.

Mixed campaign ends with defeat PostSport as Chi's poor away form continues CHICHESTER RFC’s first season back in London 1 South ended in a disappointing high-scoring defeat against bottom-half side Sevenoaks.

While Chi failed to end their season on a high, they will fancy their chances of a more sustained push to return to a higher level in the new season.

They bounced back well from conceding the game’s first try last Saturday after just three minutes and turned the game on its head in a blistering opening eight minutes to lead 14-7 and were still very much in the game at half-time when trailing 17-14.

Chichester remained in the game despite an early second-half sin binning, during which they conceded just two penalties, but a second yellow card midway through the second half was to prove their undoing and left them with a mountain of 37-21 to climb when they returned to full complement to trade closing scores.

Victory was sealed for the Kent side with Chichester pushing to get within one score

when an intercept was returned two thirds of the pitch.

For Chichester, it has been a season of solid rebuilding after relegation.

But the standard set by runaway leaders CS Rugby, who lost just twice all season, shows the level of relentless intensity and consistency they will need to climb back up the league system.

The defeat was their sixth on the road and it has been their away form which has been Chichester’s Achilles’ heel this season.

It was also the sixth time that Chi had dropped points to teams below them in the season and followed similar disappointments against fellow strugglers Thurrock in February and London Cornish in November.

In the end, the club will look back on a three-game losing streak to start 2018 which really put paid to any hopes of a series promotion push this time around.

Chris Johnson ended the season as top tryscorer after bagging 15 in 20 appearances.

f Chi can reflect on a season of consolidation

DARTS: A blind trebles knockout ended the 60th year of the Benevolent Darts League, formerly the Bognor Regis & Chicheser Old Folks Darts League.

An excellent turnout of 81 players, only three short of last year, took part in the knockout. Among them were 14 former champions.

But the first round saw one of last year's winning team, Lewis Kalli (QE2 Galleon), leave the competition held at the Newtown Social Club.

The first semi-final saw Conner O'Hara (The Legends), Rob Collins(Friary Z) and Terry Smith (Aldwick Legion) take on Esme Davis (Richmond B), Rob Rice (Chi Snooker Club) and the other member of last year's winners, Andy Cooper (Claremont).

The scoring power of O'Hara, Collins and Smith was too much for Davis, Rice and Cooper.

The second semi-final saw Andy Chant (Aldwick Legion), Wayne Wadsworth (Friary Z) and Jamie Middleton (Newtown C) against Stuart Gray (QE2 Galleon), Colin Mace (Friary Z) and Debbie Ling (BRSA Jokers).

Four years ago, Ling was a winner of the Blind Trebles, but it wasn't to be this time as Chant, Wadsworth and Middleton took the doubles and the place in the final.

The final saw Collins beat Chant at the bullseye to start the match. O'Hara hit the first ton of the night and Chant followed with 121, but that still left them behind.

On only his third throw, Collins hit double 10 to take the first leg.

The second leg saw Collins start with 83 and then a 140 and, although O'Hara and Smith were not on form, neither were their opponents, who couldn't score more than 60.

Collins missed the bullseye for a 118 out-shot, and Smith was so close to finishing the game. But it was O'Hara who hit double 5 with his second dart, winning the game 2-0, and making himself, Collins and Smith, pictured below, this year's Blind Trebles champions and taking home £210 between them.

BOGNOR under 16s enjoyed a fine end to the season when they took their fine form on to the continent.

The second day of their Belgium tour again took place in tropical temperatures that topped 27 degrees.

After a not so early night for the Bognor boys, the pink kit was again donned ready for action. Injuries from the day before meant no action for Corbould and his huge swollen face but despite the energy-sapping tour up to then, the boys seemed ready for action against the previously undefeated Coq Mosan.

A disciplined and at time ferocious start saw Bognor attacking with passion and tempo that had not been seen the day before. in the 36-19 defeat by FC Shilde.

A huge scrum saw skipper Joyce, Stan Wright and Atanasov driving ther opponents back. Big Brad Smith picked up and got over the gainline.

The ball was moved wide to Cellan Robinson, who made good ground. From the ruck,

Spurle sniped and Orchard finished superbly in the corner. Trodd used his enormous boot to good effect and Bognor had the lead.

Back came the Coqs. However, great defence from Decarteret and Turner on the wings prevented a score and the ball was cleared.

Defences were winning the battle in the heat but Bognor were in determined mood, the forwards hitting rucks ferociously throughout as the backs looked for opportunities.

With time running out, a great kick from Clark was gathered by Orchard. A fantastic tackle from the Belgium fullback looked like preventing the score but Trodd was on hand to take the off load and canter over.

Clark converted for a 14-0 win to the raptures of the pink-clad Bognor faithful and seal what was the performance of the season from Bognor. * The first team are in unexpected play-off action tomorrow with a chance to get into London SW three against Old Georgians from Surrey one. Kick-off is 3pm.

Chi have been riding high in the league and were comfortably above visitors Newhaven before Tuesday's defeat.

But the men from East Sussex, and star striker Lee Robinson in particular, appear to have the measure of Chichester this season and with a 2-0 victory became the first side to do a home and away double over City in the league this season.

Robinson has bagged all five of the goals for Newhaven in those two fixtures, following up his hat-trick in October’s first meeting between the sides with a brace on Tuesday night to take his tally to a league high 44.

There will be no gentle amble towards the summer break now for Chichester who welcome league leaders Haywards Heath to Oaklands Park tomorrow.

That game is followed by two fixtures with Pagham in four days including one which will define both clubs' season - the final of the Sussex RUR Cup at Lancing on Wednesday.

Three Bridges ran out 3-0 winners on Tuesday night to move seven points clear of third-placed Pagham with just two games to go.

Pagham could have taken the battle down to the penultimate week but threw away the advantage of a blistering start on Saturday against Eastbourne Town to drop two points.

The prolific Dan Simmonds had Pagham fans cheering twice in the opening ten minutes, adding to his large goal tally for the season, as The Lions threatened to blow away their visitors in the summer sun.

But their East Sussex opponents had their own double-quick two goal marksmen in Christopher Cumming-Bart who bagged a brace in just three second-half minutes to give Eastbourne a share of the spoils.

The draw, coupled with Three Bridges’ weekend win at home to Peacehaven and Telscombe, had left Pagham with a four-point gap before Three Bridges kicked off their promotion party in style with a handsome win over relegation threatened Arundel.

They will join Haywards Heath Town in the Isthmian League Division One South next season.

The Lions will play out their final two games of the season, away to Hassocks tomorrow Saturday before finishing their league campaign at Nyetimber Lane against Chichester City.

Both fixtures give them the chance to hold on to third spot from the challenge of Horsham YMCA and their final day visitors.

Pagham and Chichester City will also lock horns next Wednesday in the final of the Sussex RUR Cup – a final that comes one day short of 100 days since both teams qualified for the final way back in January.

SELSEY ended their season with a battling display against Wick to jump a place in the final standings.

Mo Seye grabbed a final point of the season for the Seals in the 82nd minute on Tuesday night after rising highest to meet Ryan Morey’s free-kick.

The goal was enough to lift Selsey above St Francis Rangers, who had already completed their fixtures, into eighth on goal difference.

The club had been trailing to a 66th minute opener from Wick, who finished the season in fifth and 14 points better off than their

On Saturday, it had been a role reversal for Selsey after they dropped points from a winning position in the dying minutes of their last away game of the season at Billingshurst.

Ryan Morey had put Selsey ahead in the 15th minute but their hosts levelled in a scramble from a corner and following sustained second-half pressure.

While Selsey can now look forward to their summer holidays, Division Two rivals Sidlesham still have three more games to

The Sids are three points off second-placed Alfold with a game in hand and a marginally superior goal difference.

They kept the pressure up on Saturday with an excellent 1-0 win away to fellow promotion hopefuls Roffey but know they will have to better that performance on Tuesday when they travel to leaders Rustington.

Sidlesham manager Daren Pearce said: “The players have looked a bit rusty but that's understandable given the lack of match practice caused by postponements.

“I'm pleased with them, we had a blip after Christmas but we've got back on track in recent weeks.

“I feel sorry for them at the number of games called off. As an ex-player, I know that the lads always look forward to the games.”

Chichester Ladies clinched a come-frombehind victory against Swindon Town on Saturday in the first of four home games on the spin.

Jess Lewry was the hero of the hour with a 94th minute winner following on from Jade Widdows’ second-half equaliser.

Chichester now play Coventry on Sunday, followed by Charlton Athletic on Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers four days later in a triple header sure to test late season fitness and squad depth.

The Sussex Premier League Premier Division side will be disappointed after a 15-run defeat against Division Two Chichester Priory Park in the first round of the ECB National Club Championship on Saturday.

Winning the toss, captain Sean Heather’s decision to put Chichester PP into bat initially seemed vindicated as Craig Fowle had opener Matthew Bennison leg before.

However, Chichester PP rebuilt well around a second wicket stand of 111 with Simon Hasted (50) and Mike Smith (62) making impressive half centuries with Smith as the aggressor, hitting three sixes in his 68-ball knock.

Middleton managed to put the brakes on just before the 30-over mark with a double blow with the economical Fowle (2-19) getting his second lbw decision while opener Hasted fell with no more runs added to the scoreboard when stumped by Matthew Robinson off the bowling of Glenn Houchen.

Two further wickets in the final ten overs from Brandon Hanley kept Chichester PP in check and Middleton feeling they had found a way back into the contest.

The home side lost both openers with only 32 on the board in reply but pushed on as Patrick Colvin joined his captain in a stand of 91 before Colvin departed for 35. Heather continued to take the fight to the visitors’ attack but his dismissal for 38 led to a middle-order collapse.

The only way is up for Rocks after defeats put them bottom Next Game

DARTFORD (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR’S miserable season back in the National League South was sealed on Tuesday night when another home loss confirmed the Rocks would finish rock bottom of the table.

With relegation already a certainty, the club now have only pride to play for on the last day of the season after defeat to Chelmsford Town opened up an insurmountable seven point gap to fellow Sussex strugglers Whitehawk.

The club’s 12th home league defeat was sealed by a goal in the fourth minute by their promotion-chasing visitors.

It compounded another tough week for Bognor after they were thumped 4-0 away to fellow strugglers Oxford City on Saturday.

The Rocks were on the ropes from the start at the Marsh Lane Stadium and Matt Patterson put the hosts on course for victory with a first half brace.

His first was a 39th minute penalty bizarrely awarded for a late challenge after Oxford had the ball in the net following a neat onetwo. Four minutes later, he had found the opposite corner of the net, smashing home from eight yards after the Rocks failed to deal with a corner.

from time, following up after Patterson had been denied his hat-trick by a Dan Lincoln save.

After the weekend thrashing, the Rocks restored some pride with a battling display in midweek - albeit with the same outcome of no goals and no points.

As well as another moral sapping defeat, the weekend fixture had created a central defensive crisis with Sami El-Abd’s suspension and Gary Charman’s injury forcing manager Jack Pearce to partner midfielder Tommy Block with Keaton Wood for the home game.

The pair were still getting to know each other when the deadlock was broken as a through ball freed Chelmsford’s Christopher Dickson to slot home the opener unchallenged.

The Rocks battled hard for the remainder of the match but again the lowest scorers in the league could not carve out enough clearcut chances and failed to put away the halfchances that fell their way.

The hope of better days to come back at a level at which the Rocks can hold their own beckons.

But, before that, they face a tough finish to the season with a visit from high-flying Dartford who need a win, and potentially a big win, if they are to overhaul Havant and Waterlooville at the top of the table.

Rocks' hero Dabba departs THE SUMMER overhaul at the Rocks has begun before the season has had its final kicks.

Club legend Darin Killpartrick has confirmed his departure from Nyewood Lane after 18 years' service as a player, manager and coach.

Known affectionately as Dabba, the man who has personified the club as much as anyone in the past two decades, is set for an emotional send-off tomorrow when the Rocks endure their National League swansong against promotion hungry Dartford.

Rocks manager Jack Pearce has paid tribute to his fellow Rocks' stalwart, describing Killpartrick as a club hero who would be greatly missed and very difficult to replace.

Killpartrick, side by side with Jamie Howell for eight years, was instrumental in the Rocks’ run of success and heartbreak which finally saw them promoted last year after so many near misses. He will remain in his roles as head of the football academy at Chichester College and also coach for the England Colleges FA u-18 team.

Pearce’s position has also come under question from some fans throughout the season of struggle with more calls for the long-standing servant to stand down after Saturday’s defeat while the playing squad is set to also undergo a significant overhaul.

SO WE are now relegated and everyone is deeply disappointed as we head back to Bostik League football next season.

News came out this week revealing head coach Darin Kilpartrick’s departure at the end of the season.

For me, this is very sad news indeed. ‘Dabba’ has been the lynchpin of this team for almost 20 years and has brought on a lot of the players we are seeing today.

He has also gone a long way in improving the fitness level of the squad to enable us to play the ‘Bognor Way’ wherever we go because you need a strong team to be able to pass the ball as much as we do.

Thanks to Dabba for all he has done for the club – and, yes, he is a Rocks Legend.

I hope we haven’t seen the last of him at the club because he’s one of the most qualified coaches around and he loves BRTFC. Those are big shoes to fill for whoever takes over next season – I sent him a text to say as much.

On the pitch, unfortunately ,things haven’t improved but I love the coach trips to the away games. Our last away game of the season saw us travel to Oxford City who I thought played really well against us on their rubber crumb 3G pitch.

We actually did all right up until just before half time when it looked as though the linesman had his flag up for offside and the referee pointed to the spot for a foul

in the area and they scored from that.

For me, when we went 2-0 down our heads dropped and we struggled to get back into that game.

I loved the banter on the coach trip home, though, and the fans were superb at that game.

Unfortunately, I missed the Concord Rangers away game in midweek before this. It sounded like a similar story to the one we have had this season, conceding early.

I enjoyed Lee Roberts and Len Kilpatrick’s commentary of the game. Fair play to Rocks' fan Rob who has been at every game this season, and spent A LOT of money getting home from Concord in a taxi after our 2-1 defeat!

I thought we improved and had a lot of the ball against Chelmsford this past Tuesday night but, unfortunately, didn’t turn these into chances.

The Clarets, therefore, secured their play-off place.

So it's Dartford at home tomorrow in our last game of the season in the Vanarama National League South.

Would be nice to cause an upset wouldn’t it? I hope to see many of you there to cheer on the Green Army and let’s make this a great send off for Dabba who has given so much time and effort to the club over the years.

I know the players will try their best. See you tomorrow.
