Dealing with drugs at canal BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE action is being taken to tackle drug users at the canal in Chichester. Drug users aged as young as 12 had been spotted at the canal basin which West Sussex county councillor Jamie Fitzjohn, for Chichester South, described as popular to users due to the

poor lighting and accessibility. As reported in the Chichester Post in February, Cllr Fitzjohn set up a task force including Chichester District Council, West Sussex officers, residents' associations, parish councillors, police and the Canal Trust. Benches in the area were removed to help deter culprits. At Chichester City Council's meeting on Wednesday evening, Cllr Fitzjohn

said the problems were being dealt with thanks to the combined efforts of groups in the task force. He said: “We know who the individuals are. The police are still investigating a number of individuals. They have been identified. They are aware of who they are. "A warrant was issued and a full search was done on an individual. Unfortunately, at that time, they did not

have any drugs on them. However, the intelligence that they have been working on led them to the hall in Terminus Road.” In January, police were successful in confiscating cannabis plants worth an estimated £377,000 from the property where 750 cannabis plants were discovered inside.
