THe group, Build a Better A27 (BABA27) met on Wednesday evening to continue discussions over the next steps on the dual-carriageway.

THe group were still indecisive over southern and northern route options with members from parish councils and groups arguing their points over the best way forward.

Almost 3,500 electronic copies and 400 hard copies of the A27 survey were completed by members of the public expressing their views.

Although the results have not been analysed at this stage due to the vast

volume, the BABA27 group gave an update on community engagement and feedback received.

James Pickford, representing Lavant Parish Council, said: "We had a meeting at a week's notice and we got 170 people to come and listen primarily to what I had to say and then had questions and answers.

"I tried to make a fair presentation and we had a lot of questions. One of

the things that came back was, after five years, the public that came to the meeting couldn't understand why we were having to start again from scratch with so much work that had been done before.

"THey found that a presentation with no drawings and no costings was less than helpful. One has got a consensus that there is a degree of mistrust with the whole process that is going on."

New homes to be built next to A27 COUNCILLORS have approved planning permission for 25 new homes in Chichester on vacant land to the east of the boundary of the A27.

THe approval was made at Wednesday's Chichester District Council planning meeting after councillors were divided over the impact of noise and pollution on the proposed dwellings, which will be located in an area of land off Claypit Lane.

THe recommendation was to defer for section 106 and then permit having previously been objected by the parish council.

THe housing mix includes four onebed flats, 11 two-bed flats, one threebed flat, six three-bed houses and three four- bed houses. Of these, at least seven would be affordable homes.

Councillors agreed the need for affordable homes outweighed the issues debated in the meeting, which included noise and pollution from the A27 and drainage issues after the area flooded in 2012.

Cllr Richard Plowman raised concerns over the future of the A27 and what that would mean for the development.

He said: "THis is very close to the A27, we don't know what is going to happen to the A27 and I think we need to be careful when considering this.

If there are any modifications to the A27, they have already said that there should be nothing interfering with the A27. Perhaps in the future some of this site might be required for A27 improvements."

Officer Tony Whitty confirmed: "THere is no policy for the A27 improvements.

THere is no land take up proposed.

THerefore, it would be inappropriate to hamper development from this committee's speculations to what might be or might not be required.

"I would strongly urge against relying upon that as a concern or reason for refusal at this stage.

"THe housing numbers are not a maximum and if there is a requirement in other regards, then the presumption should be in favour of this site.

"If there are fears that this will lead to further development, I don't think that will be the case, mainly because the A27 is there."

Cllr Plowman continued: "THere are a number of issues we need to think about. It is important that this is outside of the settlement area, it is classified as the countryside and good reason as it is part of the wildlife corridor.

"THere are substantial bat colonies here which will be disturbed as a result of this development.

"THe other thing in terms of the site the environmental conditions in terms of noise pollution. You have a railway line and a motorway either side.

"I'd also like to ask where the social housing is going, is it going as we have seen in other situations, in the most undesirable part of the site.

THe affordable homes are due to be in the blocks of flats closest to the south of the area with some in the centre.

Mr Whitty confirmed: "THere is always going to be tension between trying to pepper pot affordable housing and what the affordable housing developer wants.

Blocks of flats are very difficult to split up in market housing and affordable housing. We think this is a good mix and good positioning. Yes it doesn't stray up into any of the housing at the front of Claypit Lane partly because of their format."

EVIE Gwen Monks, aged six, has been announced as the award winner of the Chichester BID Easter Egg Trail 2018.

THe trail started on Saturday, March 31, and in total 47 businesses, independents and multiples joined in the fun by hosting an egg.

Even though the weather forecast for Easter looked decidedly gloomy, it didn’t deter people from participating in the hunt, not to mention the hysterical antics of “Eggs on Legs”, who got everyone dancing in the streets.

THe idea of the Easter Egg Trail was to give city visitors a reason to stay longer and to support local business and it was about letting the public

know where these businesses are.

THe BID team received over 145 competition entries and the winner of all 14 wonderful prizes was Evie.

Jeanette Hockley, members service manager at Chichester BID, said: "Events such as this show the huge sense of community that exists among the city centre businesses and doesn’t that help to make Chichester a nicer place to shop? It was great to see so many members of the general public taking part and supporting their local shops. THe feedback the BID team has received was overwhelmingly positive, with lots of lovely comments from business owners."

Centre for Dentistry staff in Sainsbury’s on Westhampnett Road, are taking part in “Marathon in a Day” walk on Sunday, May 6.

THe company has been focusing on raising awareness of dental phobias and anxieties and partnered with Anxiety UK in August, 2017, to help support patients further with their dental care. All staff

at Centre for Dentistry are experts at putting nervous patients at ease and aim to help patients conquer their dental fear and look after their oral health.

Mild fear and anxiety before a visit to a dentist or doctor is very common, with the most frequent cause being a bad experience in the past.

THe team at Centre for Dentistry Chichester have pledged to walk a marathon in a day, approximately 42km, on a round-trip from Sainsbury’s up to the South Downs way and back again.

From page one Arguments over trust didn't end there, with group member Jeremy Dry, from Chichester Deserves Better, asking for more transparency according to the agreed guiding principles set by the group and he questioned meetings held by West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith.

He said: "Principle ten says 'open, honest and transparent' - where is the transparency in people from West Sussex County Council holding private, behind closed door meetings, that involve the leader of the county council, head of highways and the chief executive of the county council and those conversations also resulted in northern routes coming up on the agenda and on the list?"

Cllr Louise Goldsmith responded: "I have had a meeting with the chief executive of Highways England, our chief executive, Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of the Chichester District Council, the chief executive of Chichester and the chief executive and leader of Arun about the generalities of getting a scheme in for Road Investment Strategy 2 for Chichester and talking about what was happening with the proposals for the Arundel and Chichester bypass."

SYSTRA confirmed the themes arising from 21 written responses from the last meeting included:

Package of junction improvements in conjunction with ‘smart A road’ concept could have some merit, any on-line improvements should avoid flyovers and turning restrictions but separation of local / through traffic is important, southern offline routes challenging because of land availability and environmental impacts, particularly on Chichester Harbour, split views on Northern offline routes, local route seen as being particularly challenging given conflict with proposed housing developments and impact on Portfield junction and local villages.

Strategic northern route would provide capacity and separation of through/local traffic but would require significant mitigation of environmental and business impacts, modal measures generally supported as a vital part of the wider strategic solution, but will not address the issues of A27 on their own.

BABA27 group facilitator, Ash Patel, confirmed they would circulate the consolidated feedback on the long list of suggestions for consideration to the group and there will be a BABA27 meeting scheduled to follow where they will consider the short list.

He said: "THe timescales are tight.

You need to get ready to collect and report feedback from your stakeholder group to support the formal governance process."

He is suspected of shoplifting hundreds of pounds worth of hair loss products from Boots in Chichester.

He went into the store in North Street at about 2.20pm on Wednesday, April 11, and stole £639 worth of goods.

He is white, has brown wavy hair and was wearing glasses, a blue and white checked shirt and dark trousers. He also had a black bag with him.

Burglar sentenced for four offences A PROLIFIC burglar has been given a six and a half year prison sentence for a series of offences.

A joint investigation by Sussex Police and Hampshire Constabulary saw Jason Martin, 36, convicted of four offences in both Sussex and Hampshire.

On Tuesday, January 9, Martin, of no fixed address, broke into two properties in Pecketts Gate, Chichester, a property in Highleigh, and a property in Earnley.

He stole a large quantity of items from each of the properties, including a BMW car which he drove across the border and into Hampshire.

Officers in Portsmouth spotted the car and after running it through the system discovered the vehicle, along with the item found inside, was stolen.

He was arrested and forensically linked to two burglaries in Hampshire which occurred on November 13, 2017, in Hill Pound, Swanmore, and one on London Road, Petersfield, on November 23, 2017.

As the investigation into Martin continued, officers searched a property he had links to and discovered the property stolen from the burglary in London Road alongside property that had been reported stolen from a different property on the same road.

Finally, Hampshire officers identified Martin on CCTV footage using a stolen bank card from a property in Ryecroft, Havant.

Martin was charged with eight counts of burglary and was remanded in custody until he appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on March 5.

Ten other Hampshire offences and three other Sussex offences were taken into consideration and will lie on file.

He pleaded guilty to all offences and was sentenced on March, 27. He was given a four-and-a-half year sentence for the burglary in Swanmore and a two year sentence to run consecutively for the seven other burglaries.

Jon Berisford of the Community Investigation Team, said: “THis was a successful joint force investigation and the evidence against Martin was extensive. THe substantial prison sentence given to Martin underlines the gravity of his offending, which had a considerable impact on the residents of Sussex and Hampshire at the end of last year and beginning of this year "I would like to thank everyone who came forward with information and allowed justice to be served.”

Grant awarded to help support annual Chichester Roman Week THE NOVIUM Museum has been awarded a grant of £1,100 from the Roman Research Trust and THe Roman Society to support this year’s Chichester Roman Week.

Roman Week 2018, which is organised by THe Novium Museum and supported by Chichester BID, will take place throughout Chichester city centre during May half-term, from Monday, May 28, to Saturday, June 2.

THe week will feature a vibrant programme of talks, trails, guided tours and family activities.

THe grant will fund a Roman reenactment by Legio Secunda Augusta, which will be the highlight of Roman Week, to take place in Priory Park on

Wednesday, May 30.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “Chichester Roman Week is now in its third year, and this generous grant will allow us to make it bigger and better than ever.

"Priory Park, with its rich Roman history, is the perfect setting for this re-enactment and we hope to encourage as many people as possible to come in to Chichester city centre to immerse themselves in this free interactive experience of Roman heritage.”

Guests bet on a licence to thrill at RSPCA charity ball

THe Casino Royale Charity Ball was held to help raise funds for Mount Noddy in Eartham.

THe Bond-themed evening started at 6.30pm when arriving guests were treated to a glass of bubbles before the were seated at James Bond film named tables with goody bags.

Clare Palmer, manager of the RSPCA branch for the Sussex Chichester and district area, read a moving speech before playing a specially-made video showing animals from the past and present rescued and re-homed by Mount Noddy.

Visitors then enjoyed a three-course meal and were entertained by singer Elisha Pemberton, who performed classics including James Bond theme songs. Among the guests were employees from Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital from Sidlesham.

Manager of the animal hospital, Emma Pink, said: " THe staff were delighted to be invited along to the charity ball to support our local RSPCA centre, to help raise funds.

"THe evening was a great success and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, it

was lovely to mix with so many people who care about the welfare of animals.

"We would like to thank Clare Palmer and the rest of the team for letting us be a part of their special event."

After the meal, guests enjoyed a disco, dress-up photo booth and casino games including Black Jack and roulette.

THere was also a raffle with fabulous prizes donated by local businesses and people including a Flip Out voucher,

Amberley Museum voucher, Sen Restaurant voucher, jewellery, alcohol hampers and a homemade cake by Cake Magic.

A live auction was also held where a signed Brighton and Hove Albion football shirt was sold for £200.

Clare Palmer said:" THe evening was a huge success with many friends, family, local businesses and clubs invited to share the evening with us.

` Improvement scheme

"THe raffle and casino were particularly popular and the evening was started by showing a short film of the challenges and triumphs faced at the Animal Centre.

"Estimated funds raised through ticket sales and on the night in total is £5,000.

THe money will be used to help rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats in the local area.".

THe charity's next event is a summer fête and dog show on Saturday, July 28.

A QUARTER of a million pounds is now on offer to help community improvement projects.

Communities in Chichester district that have taken new homes over the past two years are being invited to apply for money to spend on improvement projects which will make a difference to residents.

THe £250,000 funding pot is part of the New Homes (Parish Allocations) Scheme for 2018 - 2019.

THe amount of money available per parish depends on the number of new homes that have been occupied during the period December 28, 2014, to January 2 , 2018.

A total of 27 parishes in Chichester district have each had more than five new properties created in that period.

Applications can only be made by parish, town or city councils, but residents are encouraged to submit ideas for projects and improvements to their local parish for consideration.

Parish councils are invited to apply for a share of the money before Monday, July 30.

Money will be awarded to projects that can demonstrate the impacts of development, aim to enhance the local area and benefit the whole community.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at the district council, said: "We have been keen to ensure that this money is protected for the benefit of those communities that have taken new development.

“THis funding is an opportunity to invest in important facilities and activities that will support our local communities for years to come."

Red light on at Stockbridge

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MOTORISTS are continuing to experience delays around the A27 at the Stockbridge roundabout.

Traffic lights have been set up while the footbridge is replaced, allowing pedestrians to cross the road while the current footbridge is closed.

Despite Highways England originally saying the stretch of A27 between the Bognor roundabout and Fishbourne roundabout would be closed from 8pm to 6am during weekday nights for two months while the footbridge was replaced, the lights are still present.

A Highways England spokesperson said they hoped to complete the work within a month, but were unable to confirm a completion time at this point.

After the initial issues were raised, a Highways England spokesperson said the temporary pedestrian crossing had been installed to allow pedestrians to cross safely while the new footbridge was installed.

Chichester district councillors meeting in January had also previously expressed their views about the lights.

` National Action Day MEMBERS of pro-European groups were out in force in Chichester on Saturday for the largest ever joint grassroots National Action Day, with over 100 events taking place all across the country.

Activists and supporters from Open Britain, the European Movement and Britain for Europe set up stall at the Cross in Chichester to campaign for a people’s vote on the final Brexit deal.

David Rowen, chairman of the Portsmouth and Chichester branch of the European Movement, said: “It is great to be out campaigning in Chichester talking to local people about making sure they get a say on the Brexit deal.

"With Brexit turning out to be much more complicated and costly than people were told during the referendum, we are demanding a people’s vote on the final Brexit deal.”

James McGrory, executive director of Open Britain, said: “Our largest ever National Day of Action is all about bringing together the various pro-European groups so that we can speak with one, unified voice, because we know that together we are stronger.”

Passing the baton to mark the RAF centenary in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ON Monday, the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF was celebrated at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum with the museum hosting the ‘RAF100 baton relay’ team.

THe team set off from the Royal Courts of Justice in London on founder’s day, April 1 when the Chief of Air Staff handed over the baton to the team.

THe relay will visit 100 RAF related sites including nine overseas locations in 100 days and will involve over 20 RAF sports organisations which will showcase their sport and opportunities available in an RAF career.

THe relay will close on July 10 at Horse Guards Parade, London.

Kurt Lee, an air traffic controller based in Oxfordshire, arrived at Tangmere from the Princess Marina House, 13 miles away.

He said: "It was an amazing run here. It's a lovely sunny day. "It's been particularly great for me as I am a Malyasian national serving in the RAF so I feel I am representing the Commonwealth and wider air force."

THe baton was made by apprentices from No.4 School of Technical Training and incorporates the three elements; brass, oak and aircraft aluminium. THese in turn represent the Spitfire, Sopwith Camel and F35B Lightning 2 planes.

Co-relay runner, Flight Sergeant Jay Ferguson, from Swanick, has been in the RAF for 29 years and said it was an amazing experience to carry the baton.

"I love doing orienteering and I love to run so when the opportunity came up to combine those with the RAF, I couldn't say no," he said.

"We started along the seafront, across a river, on road and then across fields so we have covered all terrain.

"It has been an hour to carry the baton,. Not many people can say they will have been running and carrying it.

THe Olympic Torch can be seen and held every two years with the summer and winter Olympics but this is a once in a lifetime event."

PropertyNews ` How big are Chichester's homes?

A COUPLE of weeks ago I asked whether Chichester’s homes were overcrowded. My research showed there were fewer people living in the average property in Chichester than there is nationally. Bear in mind, though, that the number of people living in a property is just one part of the equation - another factor is the amount of space we have in our homes.

Research from the University of Cambridge showed that the UK actually has the smallest new-build homes in Europe. With the average new-build home having just 76 square metres of floorspace (818 square feet), we are well behind the kings and queens of comfort; Denmark, with 137 square metres (1,475 square feet) of floorspace that’s 80 per cent more than us.

Using data from Zoopla, I can calculate the average size of all the existing homes, by property type, here in Chichester: Detached 1,574 square feet, Semi-detached - 1,018 square feet, Terraced - 936 square feet, Flat - 668 square feet Now compare this to the UK average: Detached - 1,253 square feet, Semi-detached - 639 square feet, Terraced - 441 square feet, Flat - 384 square feet.

We can clearly see we are fortunate to live in an area with properties that are far larger than the UK average (between 26 per cent and 112 per cent larger depending on property type). In fact, when we couple this with the analysis I did two weeks ago, we can see that we are actually very fortunate to live in an area with properties that are both larger than the UK average and house fewer people on average.

THe data also shows me how much people are paying for each square foot of space, and it seems that semi-detached houses are the best value for money here. With an average of three bedrooms and costing £362,510, the average semidetached home in Chichester costs £356 per square foot.

Safety fears after accident

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WEST SUSSEX Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to be water aware when out at sea ahead of NFCC’s Water Safety Week, which runs from Monday to April 29.

Last Saturday night, crews from Chichester, Bognor and the technical rescue unit were mobilised to assist the coastguard with a complex water rescue in Fishbourne.

On arrival, firefighters were able to locate the kayaker who became stranded after getting stuck in marshland when returning home, due changes in tide conditions.

Fire crews and the coastguard worked together to rescue the man and handed him over to the care of paramedics who were able to treat him and take him to hospital.

Station manager and water safety officer Marvin Smith said: “Many people are unaware of the risks that the water can have and are not prepared for the utmost worst situation.

“Fortunately, two people passing by were alerted to the incident when

they heard a distress whistle - upon investigation they raised the alarm, prompting the deployment of emergency services.

"THeir quick thinking prevented a serious incident from occurring as the outcome could have been much worse.”

Tips to stay safe when out at sea: • Know the area you are in – take a map with you just in case you become lost or disorientated.

• Ensure someone at home knows your passage plan (including points of arrival, time scale, departure and number in group).

• Wear a buoyancy aid and check that equipment is functioning properly.

• Have good provisions for your trip.

• Take working communications with you to alert emergency services if an issue were to arise.

• Don’t take any risks. If you do encounter a problem, ring 999 immediately.

BUS operator Stagecoach is improving the 55 route , which links Tangmere and Boxgrove with Chichester city centre.

From this Monday the new improved timetable has seen buses running every 20 minutes during the week daytimes.

Edward Hodgson, managing director for Stagecoach South, said: “Route 55 provides valuable transport for residents of Tangmere and Boxgrove to Chichester city centre, ideal for commuters, students and shoppers.

"It also provides the essential link to St Richard's Hospital for the whole area.

We hope that the improved 20 minute frequency will be welcomed by existing passengers as well as attracting new customers."

As part of a package of improvements to the service, Stagecoach have also upgraded the bus fleet, which now has free WiFi on board and introduced a

striking new livery for the buses running on the route which celebrates the history of British aviation in the area, particularly appropriate as Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is at the end of the route.

Stagecoach teamed up with the museum which hosted the launch of the new buses and timetable.

` ChiCycle reporting CHICHESTER'S Cycle Campaign Group, ChiCyle has commissioned a report into the proposed Sunday Cycling Ban by Transport Initiatives, a consultancy specialising in sustainable transport.

Key findings from the report are that numbers on the streets on Sundays never rise to the level that necessitates the weekday restrictions.

THe report is highly critical that the proposal seems not to have paid any regard to disability issues, pointing out that cycles are used as mobility aids both by registered and non registered people with disabilities.

Sarah Sharp, the founder and coordinator of ChiCycle, said: "By proposing Sunday times to mirror weekday restrictions, the council would criminalise people for cycling at times when the shops are closed, people are few and the streets are more than suitable for cycling.

"If there is to be any restriction on Sunday cycling we hope for a more balanced approach than this."

No rubbish ideas in new plan

Chichester District Council has launched its Adopt An Area campaign to fight against litter, fly tipping and dog fouling.

THe new scheme was marked with the unveiling of community groups featuring on advertising panels on the side of the council's recycling trucks.

THe Midhurst South Pond Group and the Selsey East Beach Pond Group are two community groups already making a difference in their local community by carrying out regular clean-up events.

Gerry Williams and Barbara Bond are from the Selsey East Beach Pond group, which was started in 2004 and currently has around nine members.

Gerry said: "We meet every Tuesday afternoon and go litter picking.

"We average one sackful of rubbish a week which contains lots of rubbish including dog foul.

"We have noticed a rise in the number of vodka bottles we find, even collecting around 15 in one week. " Barbara added: "When we started this group we didn't realise it would go so far but it's good. THe trucks look lovely and I hope people will take notice. If people didn't drop litter in the first place we wouldn't need to clean it up."

THe Against Litter campaign has already had a significant impact since it was launched last November. THe first stage involved trialling a litter enforcement scheme. In the first quarter

of the trial over 500 penalty notices were issued to those who have been caught littering.

Cabinet member for resident services at Chichester District Council, Cllr Roger Barrow, said: "Since the campaign started, we've seen a reduction in the amount of litter we are collecting and the number of tickets issued - which is great news.

"All of the money collected from the fines has been paying for the service. We don't want to issue fines, but it does seem to be making a difference. We intend to continue monitoring its effectiveness as the trial continues.

Workers will jump for joy FINANCE workers in Bognor Regis will swap pounds for parachutes this weekend.

THe trio of employees at Nationwide Building Society are taking to the sky to help homeless people.

Claire Jordan, Sacha Stewart and Chloe Perry, 28, will be taking part in a freefall tandem parachute jump for Stonepillow.

THe customer representatives have raised at least £1,200 from their generous customers and relatives.

Sacha, 47, said: "THis is the first skydive we have done. We have held a lot of events for Stonepillow and when the chance came up for the skydive we agreed to take part. We're really pleased with how much we've raised. THe customers here are amazing. THey are really generous and really get behind us."

Claire, 28, said: "THe nerves are starting to kick in the closer the day gets. But it's an experience of a lifetime. I've always been a bit of a daredevil and I immediately said I wanted to do this."

THe skydive is set to take place at midday tomorrow, at 10,000ft above Salisbury.

One of Stonepillow's residents is also set to skydive for the charity tomorrow.

Saul Nightingale has been helped by its recovery service for the past four months and wanted to repay the charity.

He said: "I am sober now, thanks to Stonepillow. I hate heights. I get giddy looking over the edge of a multi-storey car park. But I am willing to go to any lengths to help with my recovery, even it if means chucking myself out of a plane.

"I feel privileged to be in a good place now and I want to raise money for Stonepillow to help others."

Saul is facing an emotional journey to the skydive. His father, who he has not seen for a long time, is driving him there.

He had raised £330 by Wednesday towards his target of £395.

Stonepillow is seeking to raise £98,000 towards the cost of its hostel in Ellasdale Road to help to cope with a 30 per cent rise in homelessness along the south coast in the past year.

A statement from the charity said: "THe project strives to be the most innovative service in the area by its commitment to staff training, development and client involvement.

"THe new Bognor hostel will provide short-term accommodation with support in a safe and stable environment for 16 residents.It will act as the primary accommodation response to rough sleeping and homeless individuals within the local community, assessing housing needs, as well as working with an individual's, often complex, issues."

AN EXTRA 200 police officers are to be recruited for Sussex.

Chief Constable Giles York pledged on Monday he was able to stregthen his force's numbers thanks to the rise in the precept it collects from council taxpayers.

THe new positions will be in addition to the 500 police officer and staff posts due to be lost in further cutbacks to save money.

CC York said: "Over the last few years, we have dealt with significant challenges created by the financial constraints in which the force has found itself.

"THis has meant difficult decisions have had to be made, resulting in fewer people than we had before.

"THis change in our financial position has created an exciting opportunity to strengthen areas where it is needed most."

He revealed the new funding would be used to strengthen local policing over the next four years, improve ways for the public to make contact and further modernise the service to meet new and increasingly complex demands.

CC York intends that additional officers should join local prevention teams to increase visibility and accessibility, encouraging people to talk and share their knowledge of their area and solve community issues such as anti-social behaviour.

Community investigations teams will also be beefed up to increase their successes in dealing with crime series such as burglary and organised crime.

More technology like automatic number plate recognition will also be installed in all frontline vehicles.

THe 38 children staged an energetic 25 minute showcase of their skills at the town's opening artisan market of the year last Saturday.

Aged from six to 15, they were selected from St Mary's Catholic Primary School and Bersted Green Primary School by their performing arts and dance teacher, Jennifer Jarmyn.

She said: "It's the first time the schools have merged under my direction. I hope to do more of it.

"THe children don't get the opportunity to do this, perform in public. Performing in their school halls is not the same as performing in front of people like this.

"THere is a completely different format to performing here and a completely different stage with people passing by all the time. Coming here gives them a lot of confidence."

THe performance took place on the pavement outside the church. It included a mixture of contemporary dance and a medley called Let Me Entertain You with its variety of styles like hoops and catching.

"Everyone has got something they can do," said Ms Jarmyn.

THe market was held in its traditional location in and around Bognor Regis Methodist Church on the corner of West Street and Waterloo Square.

It got off to a brisk start with 62 visitors counted into the church hall in

the opening hour in spite of the foggy conditions.

Joint organiser Chris Warden said she expected some 300 shoppers to visit during the day in keeping with the previous markets.

"We've got more stalls inside the hall than before," she said. "We've made room for 20 stalls by moving the tea and coffee into the church itself.

"By taking that seating out of the hall, it means we can get more stalls in it."

THe indoor stalls were a mixture of newcomers, such as a cheese merchant, and familiar favourites.

It was the same situation among the five stalls outside. THe new sellers included olives and plants after requests at past markets.

"We have listened to what people have wanted," said Ms Warden, who holds the markets with Michele Redford.

"We have also listened to the businesses around here and left the Little High Street open rather than closing it.

"We will review that for each market but it will be closed for the Christmas

market."

Afternoon entertainment came from Karen Etherington with singer Hattie.

THe markets started in 2016 as part of the efforts to boost the town centre.

THeir popularity saw four of them staged last year. Four will also be held this year.

THe next three will take place on July 21, September 15 and November 24.

Daredevil Myrtle's skydive BRAVE Myrtle Green has taken a leap of love to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester.

THe 83-year-old from Bognor Regis signed up for the skydive after her late husband, Bill, was looked after by staff when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home with all of his family around him.

"Marvellous Myrtle" as she has been affectionately nicknamed by listeners to Angel Radio, where she volunteers, completed the 10,000-foot freefall parachute jump on April 7 after a delay caused by bad weather.

She said: "I was a bit disappointed when it was first cancelled but it actually worked really well as my daughter had pre-arranged a visit from Canada so it meant she was able

to watch.

"I felt really elated when I came down. I wanted to do it again straight away. As I was waiting I thought I would get nervous but it all happened so quickly.

"Shane, the instructor, told me to get on the floor and the next minute we were out of the plane."

Mrs Green has now raised over £1,000 for the hospice and is already making plans for her next daring adventure with an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth to raise money for Havant-based community radio station Angel Radio.

"I know it will be more physical, but if I am fit and well I will do it next year!" she said.

` Bus strategy survey BUS passengers have been asked for their views to ensure a good network of the vehicles around West Sussex.

THe county council is developing a new bus strategy to explore ways in which it can work with bus companies and other partners to help sustain and improve services.

THe council would like to hear opinions on proposals for the new strategy and any other suggestions people think should be included.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “Your feedback will inform our approach to and investment in bus services and community transport between 2018 and 2026, so this is a great opportunity to have your say.”

Hendy Group has joined the national Water Refill Scheme to allow anyone to use their refillable water bottles at its car dealerships such as the one in Terminus Road.

Daylight PDT: a treatment available for sun damaged skin that’s just like going for a walk in the park.

Photodynamic Therapy has been used for over 15 years to treat actinic keratosis and some types of early skin cancers. Actinic keratoses are pre-cancerous areas of the skin or ‘lesions’ which have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight. This causes the skin cells to grow at an abnormally fast rate. ‘AK’s’ generally appear on sun exposed areas such as the face and scalp, and become rough and scaly, large areas of AK are called ‘field areas’. It is very important that these areas are treated to avoid the possibility of them progressing into skin cancer in the future.

Daylight PDT is different to the conventional PDT treatment which uses topical creams and gels followed by a session using an intense pulsed light, which many patients find irritating and painful. Now, the Daylight PDT takes advantage of the reaction which occurs between the daylight and the cream. The chemical reaction results in the destruction of the abnormal skin cells and leaves the surrounding healthy skin completely unharmed.

The treatment involves simply attending an appointment where the skin is prepared and the cream applied, you can then go away for a period of 2 hours and let the areas be exposed to daylight, go shopping or have a walk in the park. After the 2 hours the cream is removed and the skin must then be protected by either high factor sun cream or a hat. There may be mild redness and tingling and a little scaling, but this indicates that the treatment has worked, a totally different sensation compared to the intense pulsed light.

Dr Sandra Minor, Consultant Dermatologist at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, has been using the PDT treatment as an option for sun damaged skin since 2002, now believes this is a far superior alternative to the current standard AK treatment. She says “this is a new exciting way of delivering PDT, which will benefit patients by a one off treatment with minimal discomfort and downtime. Large field areas can be treated in one visit and it is very effective just like a walk in the park.”

Top accolade for Sean's uni work WORKING on major projects for the University of Chichester has earned a former student a top award.

Alumni and now employee Sean MacEnri was presented with the emerging talent accolade from the Association of University Directors of Estates by entertainer Gyles Brandeth.

THe award celebrates members of staff who make an exceptional contribution to the facilities sector and show great potential.

Among the projects Sean has been working on is the £35m engineering and digital technology park on the Bognor Regis campus.

Between 30 and 40 volunteers of all ages took part in a litter pick along the foreshore. THe community event was held by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and was combined with Bognor Regis In Bloom's delayed annual spring clean.

Last THursday's session between the bandstand and the pier saw nine bags each filled with some 60 litres of rubbish in just over an hour.

"If visitors see an unclean beach, they won't come back."

The Sweet Taste of Summer Spring is finally here and it’s time to start thinking about planting for the summer – and perhaps even giving fruit growing a go!

Of all the popular summer fruits, strawberries are one of the easiest to grow in containers and you can grow them on a patio, balcony, windowsill or even in a hanging basket.

Strawberries are compact plants, so even gardeners with limited space can have a few pots on the go positioned close to the kitchen or outdoor seating area for convenience. By growing them in pots you can provide strawberries with the perfect conditions – rich, fertile, well

draining soil in a sunny position and as they are growing off the ground they are less likely to suffer from disease or damage by pests.

There are two types of strawberries you can go for – Summer-fruiting varieties or perpetual strawberries. Summerfruiting are the largest and most popular.

They have a short by heavy cropping period over two to three weeks any time from early to mid-summer. Perpetual strawberries produce smaller crops of fruits from early summer to early autumn. The crops are not as heavy as the summer-fruiting ones and the fruits are smaller in size.

You can grow strawberries in a variety of different containers, but the advantage of growing them in a strawberry planter – an urn shaped pot with pocket holes down the side – is that they look attractive, a good sized pot holds a fair number of plants and they produce the highest yield. You will need one plant per side opening and three or four for the top (if you are growing strawberries in an ordinary container then just three or four plants will do). Fill the bottom of the pot with compost that contains a slow release fertiliser and continue to fill the container as you plug each hole with a strawberry plant, lightly patting the plant into the soil as you fill. Finish off your strawberry planter with the three to four plants on top.

Make sure your containers get at least six to eight hours of sun so that you will get plenty of flowers and fruits and if the sunlight is coming from only one direction, rotate the container every three to four days if possible. Water your strawberries whenever the soil feels dry about an inch below the surface, and when there are long periods of hot, dry weather you may need to water daily.

If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) • Tie back climbing and rambling roses • Keep an eye out for pests and keep weeds under control • Start feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer • Sow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer • Sow vegetable seeds directly into prepared beds • Plant summer flowering bulbs • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches • Prune shrubs and trees • Apply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots • Prepare hanging baskets

Grapefruit is great fruit for tackling unsightly cellulite AS SOON as the sun's out, and we start wearing less clothing, we are exposing parts of our bodies that perhaps haven’t been seen for a while. THen there is the worry of being beach ready? Bikinis? Shorts?

Does the very thought fill you with dread? Are you worried about how much cellulite you have?

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the appearance of lumpy or dimpled 'cottage cheese skin', which predominantly develops with age on the legs, bottom, stomach and back of the arms. Basically, when you have globules of fat under the skin pushing up against the connective tissue, you have this uneven, 'mottled' skin appearance. THe reason adults develop areas of loose skin and cellulite is because of uneven texture of fatty deposits beneath the skin.

THis condition is more common in women than men, with about 80 per cent of women having some measure of cellulite, particularly as they age and the skin loses its elasticity. However, anyone can develop cellulite, even teenagers dealing with

weight and hormonal changes.

As a skin condition, cellulite is not serious or harmful, and therefore many choose to just simply leave their cellulite alone. Meanwhile, others are very bothered by the appearance of cellulite, especially following life circumstances such as weight gain/loss or pregnancy.

Several primary factors contribute to the development of cellulite, including: • Poor diet • Fluid retention, which also causes bloating • Dehydration • Lack of circulation or blood flow • Weak collagen structure of the skin • Being overweight or having increased body fat • Hormonal changes • Lack of physical activity Some other factors that can cause skin changes such as cellulite, sagginess, wrinkles and formation of dark spots include: hormonal imbalances, high amounts of stress, existing medical conditions like autoimmune disease or diabetes, genetics, poor diet, too much alcohol, allergies, smoking, too much sun exposure and other causes of toxicity.

THings like stress and a poor diet also cause your body to slow down production of collagen, which is crucial to keep skin looking young.

I have been looking into simple and inexpensive ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite and grapefruit aromatherapy oil is a great one to try.

Did you know that the scent of the oil of grapefruit alone can stimulate the burning of fat?

Also, because it contains citral and citronellal, the oil has astringent qualities as well. Vitamin C is a great astringent agent. THis means that it can shrink the pores and tighten the skin, making it look firmer.

It also helps the lymphatic system to work properly.

THis lymphatic system is a big part of the circulatory system and pink grapefruit essential oil can stimulate and activate both.

THis effect will result in a better blood circulation that will deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the epidermis. It will help it regenerate and replenish.

THe lymph’s role (a fluid full of white blood cells) is to travel by blood and fight off infections.

THe body is assailed by toxins every day. A strong immune system will be able to protect the body against their harmful effects. Grapefruit oil can strengthen the immune system and can drain the toxins out.

It can stimulate the sweat glands and force harmful chemicals out of the body, which is a major part of getting rid of cellulite.

THe oil can also control any excessive water retention, which in time will add to the circumference of the thighs and waist.

THis means that the oil is effective in decreasing subcutaneous fat (cellulite). It also improves the aspect/appearance of the skin. THe most effective method is by far via daily massages. THe oil must be

steam distilled to avoid photo-toxicity and it must be diluted in a proper carrier oil. One such carrier, recommended in treating cellulite and stretch marks, is avocado. Simply massage into the affected areas daily as vigorously as you can.

For body blends, you could make a concentrated serum. THat would imply the use of about 20–30 drops of grapefruit essential oil per 30 ml carrier oil.

It’s simple and effective, so why not give it a try!

RETURNING to one of my favourite haunts where three counties virtually meet and it was indeed during my sojourn in Lyme Regis that I made a serendipitous discovery as I descended Broad Street - namely that of a bookworm's paradise nestling in centre of the town Lyme in the form of the Sanctuary Bookshop run by avid book enthusiast Bob Speer.

THis seemingly endless curiosity shop hosts a cornucopia of the written word in all formats with ten separate book areas and one splendid reading room equipped with fine settees and musical instruments dotted all over the place.

Dorset and Devon are also growing in reputation in terms of sparkling wines, so

I availed myself of a 2015 Dalwood Brut - produced in the picturesque Devon village on just three acres of hillside as a hobby business by David Dower and a group of friends and was able to note the good bubbles, interesting combination of the Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes and the delicate hints of the orchard and undoubtedly one of the best in the area!

Venturing home , it seemed opportune to stop at Aldi, Chichester, in search of good-value wines. A good starting point is its Exquisite Collection which is generally synonymous with quality.

I opted for a 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie and observed a slight spritz with a good lemon and green apple flavoured tang and, for an outlay of £5.69, a pleasant wine and one to accompany shellfish.

In the same range, was a 2017 Clare Valley Australian Riesling for £6.99 sporting a lemon and lime nose and exuding peach and tangerine flavours culminating in a good dry mineral finish - a wine worthy of your consideration!

At the same price, the 2017 Gavi Del Commune Di Gavi proved to be a great spring tipple and whose fresh acidity held together honeydew melon, apple

and subtle hazelnut flavours to form a well rounded wine.

Two reds stood out côté good bang for your buck beginning with a 2016 Animus Douro priced at a miserly £4.99 being of Portuguese provenance and made from port grapes.

THis gem is pleasingly smooth and

fruity and totally belies its pecuniary worth. Soft and rond en bouche, it has rich black fruit to the fore and a hint of spice and is one to grab at this low price!

My final selection was that of a 2015 80 Acres Cabernet Shiraz Merlot priced at £5.69 from carbon neutral producers, namely the Taylor family from South

Australia.

THis wine is medium-bodied with a fragrant nose, is both smooth and well balanced with a touch of vanilla spice, has soft tannins and luscious red berries and blackcurrant to regale your palate an Australian delight!

Community News & Views A MENTAL health charity is appealing for volunteers in Bognor Regis and Chichester to help at its Saturday club.

Coastal West Sussex Mind needs support at its respite services for older people with mild to moderate dementia, confusion or memory loss, which enables their carer to have a break.

Bognor Regis area manager Jo Bulis said: "We desperately need a couple of volunteers to join us at the Chestnuts Day Centre in Bognor Regis and at the Judith Adams Centre in Chichester.

"Partners of those with dementia really need a break from caring to look after their own health and well-being.

"When they know their loved ones are enjoying being at our clubs, they can relax and have some desperately-needed respite. Our volunteers are a vital part of making this possible.

"THese roles could be a good opportunity for those looking to use or develop skills around working with people with dementia but could equally suit retired people who have some time to spare on this rewarding work."

Rayner Waszkiewicz, area manager for Chichester, said: "Tasks will include setting up activities and clearing away, welcoming and chatting with people attending the club, helping them to take part in activities and preparing and serving meals and refreshments.

"A calm, patient manner would be beneficial and, as the days are great fun, a sense of humour is important.

"Volunteers are needed for most of the day on a Saturday but, if you only have a few hours, or can only do alternate weekends, for example, we would still like to hear from you."

FILM-MAKERS from around the county will be gathering in Chichester this Sunday.

THey will be watching entries from amateur film clubs in the latest Albany Film Competition.

THe event is being hosted by Chichester Film and Video Makers in recognition of its winning entry last year.

Alan Hepburn, the club's competition secretary, said: "THis year, there are six films entered in the competition from four clubs. THese films - based on the theme Elephant in the Room will be shown and judged on the day."

THe competition is being held at THe Newell Centre in Tozer Way. Doors will open at 2pm, with a welcome and introduction at 2.30pm. Entries will begin to be screened ten minutes later.

"THe total running time of the films, including time for the judges' deliberations, will be under two hours so, at approximately 4.30pm, there will be an interval during which refreshments will be available and the judges reach their verdicts," said Mr Hepburn.

It is expected the judges will announce their comments about 5pm. THese will be followed by the results and the presentation of the awards.

THe cost of entry will be £7 to include a cream tea. A raffle will also be drawn during the refreshment interval.

"Anyone interested in amateur films film-making is welcome to attend and experience the skill, imagination and expertise shown in the making of these films," Mr Hepburn added.

Chichester Film and Video Makers meets every other Wednesday, from September to May, in St Pancras church hall, St Pancras, in Chichester.

Its next meeting is at 7.30pm next Wednesday. Entry and a cup of tea is free.

A TEAM of 33 employees from a Chichester company will be stepping out in memory of a loyal colleague.

Kev Starling, pictured above, passed away in January after he had worked at Covers Timber and Builders Merchants in Chichester for more than 40 years.

He lost his battle with cancer while he was being cared for at St Wilfrid's Hospice after he had been diagnosed with the condition last November.

THe team at Covers will be taking part in next month's Moonlight Walk in aid of the hospice.

THey will tackle the five mile overnight walk through Chichester in a bid to raise at least £1,000 for the hospice.

Henry Green, Covers' managing director, said: "Kev was incredibly popular with his colleagues and a great friend to all those that met him.

"He is sorely missed by

everyone at Covers, so we are pleased to be honouring his memory with this walk on behalf of the hospice that took such great care of him.

"It will be a physical and emotional challenge for all those taking part and I would like to wish the whole team the very best of luck."

THis year marks the tenth anniversary of the Moonlight Walk on May 5.

To celebrate, the hospice hopes 1,000 walkers register and raise £100,000 for its work.

St Wilfrid's Hospice cares for terminally ill patients, while providing support to their families.

Only 15 per cent of the charity's funding is provided through the NHS so it relies heavily on the generosity of donations and fundraising events.

Sir, As the stretch of the A27 westbound from Chichester to Havant is now in such an appalling condition would it be advisable to replace the single uneven road surface warning sign with several signs warning of short sections of flat road?

I do pity any unwary motorcyclists having to cope with the reluctance of the highways people to make any remedial work possible.

I can only imagine the intention is to wait until all of the Tarmac is worn away to return to the original concrete road surface. What a pity that the many billions of pounds siphoned off of road users cannot be used, in part to make things safer.

A brief history of sea island Selsey - Part two

By Amy Roberts, collections officer and Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum EVEN BEFORE the war broke out in August, 1914, Selsey had begun making preparations for war and for defence. In September, 1914, THe Chichester Observer published the names of local men on active service.

For Selsey, 52 names were given for naval services, 35 for military service and 11 for the territorial. In October, 1914, there was an evening of variety entertainment to promote recruiting.

THis was held in the cinema hall. It consisted of a programme of war films and patriotic films. By Christmas, 1914, it was announced that there were only 25 able-bodied young men in the village who had not joined the services.

In March, 1915, the first death in action of

a Selsey parishioner was reported. THis was William Henty Woolven of upper Norton. He was one of the casualties of the Dardanelles operation. He was remembered in a memorial service in May, 1915. THese services were repeated many times throughout the course of the war.

Like much of the rest of the UK, war affected the lives of everyone living in Selsey at the time. Red Cross and Stretcher Bearer classes were organised in the village.

Many Selsey men were killed during World War One. It is no surprise then that the peace celebration in July, 1919, was such a crowded and welcome event. All the houses in the village were decorated with flags and materials.

As the war was declared in September 1939, holidaymakers packed their bags and left Selsey in droves.

THere was a short thanksgiving service in St Peter’s Church, followed by sports, tea and then an evening concert. THe evening ended with a bonfire on the beach.

A Peace Dinner was given in the cinema hall in September, 1919. It has been reported that 300 men had served in the forces during the war, and that over 50 of these had been killed.

In January, 1920, there was a public meeting to discuss a memorial cross to be erected in the churchyard. It was agreed the design should be similar to the Saxon cross erected

by St Wilfred.

THe £500 needed was raised by voluntary contributions. It was 18ft high and the names of the 55 men killed were inscribed on panels at the base. THe ceremony took place in May, 1921, on Whit Sunday.

During the interwar period, Selsey, together with other coastal villages at this time, became popular seaside holiday destinations. It was a well-known retreat from the hustle and bustle of London and a number of people even had second homes in the village.

Sand competitions were held with prizes being given out, including £2 in 1927. As the resort was becoming increasingly popular, with the rise of motorised forms of transport, car parks were required. In June, 1928, the first public car park was opened about a mile from Marine Drive. One shilling was the daily rate.

During the 1930s, Selsey saw the arrival of a holiday camp. Broadreeds, which later became Pontins, gets its first mention in the Kelly’s Directory. In addition, Mill Farm camping and caravan site was also available for holidaymakers.

THere was an increasing demand during the summer on facilities at the camping sites. Old buses were also used for accommodation, as

well as carriages from the Selsey tramway.

Selsey’s relative isolation after World War One meant that many famous people were attracted to the village. Such people included actors and singers as it gave them peace from their busy lives in London and other great cities. Eric Coates chose to make Selsey his home. He was a great composer, and produced a number of popular waltzes and marches.

He conducted his own works in many countries. In the early 1930s, he bought a house on the corner of Hillfield Road and Latham Road. THeir last home was at Sidlesham. Coates died in Chichester in 1957.

During the summer of 1938, all the villages were issued with gas masks and as soon as the war was declared in September, 1939, holidaymakers packed their bags and left Selsey in droves. A searchlight battery was stationed near Bill House, as well as an antiaircraft battery on the farmland to the west of the Mill.

In July, 1940, a German reconnaissance plane, a Heinkel III, made a forced landing at the north end of Park Copse, her engines having been disabled by a Spitfire’s guns.

Selsey gained town status in 1995. THe town boasts one of the largest temporary villages in the whole of Western Europe, known as West Sands Bunn Leisure Holiday Village.

It is believed that during the summer months the number of people in Selsey swells to exceed 29,000 people.

Today, Selsey’s strong seafaring traditions are kept alive by a small fishing fleet supplying the infamous Selsey crab to restaurants far and wide.

Visitors to the town can take fishing trips, or pleasure boat trips to see the beautiful Sussex coastline.

Day in the life of Support Worker

by Karen from The Apuldram Centre I’M Karen and I am a support worker for the Most of our tenants attend day services on Apuldram Centre. I work with people who have weekdays. They will also have regular one to one a learning disability and I help them to live the support sessions of between 3 to 4 hours per week, lives that they choose. I work with people in their in which they will undertake food shopping, do own homes in different types of accommodation, household chores, and where possible attend any ranging from shared housing, with or without appointments, such as GP or dentist. If I am their sleep-in cover, to self-contained accommodation. keyworker, I will provide their one to one support.

Evening support commences around 4pm. When At Apuldram we encourage people to be as independent as possible, but we understand that tenants return from their day service activities, I they might need some help to achieve this. My job will support them to participate in any household involves many different things that together help tasks whether it be their turn to cook, set the table, or do the washing up. people towards achieving their goals.

They are looking for Tea/coffee volunteers to cover a 1 hour time slot in the morning or in the afternoon.

Any help to cover even one of these slots would be most appreciated, even if it is just 1 morning or afternoon a week. Duties would include making a big pot of Tea, some instant coffee in flask dispensers, some glasses of orange squash and helping to serve them to clients. Also

putting returned cups in the dish washer afterwards. No experience necessary as friendly staff will be on hand to show you what to do.

Bus Driver or Escort – Midhurst Community Bus Association The Midhurst Community Bus operates scheduled services in and around Midhurst that anyone can use. The Community Bus continues to provide cheap accessible transport to the Midhurst community, plus the communities of Easebroune, Lodsworth and Trotton, to enable passengers of all ages to shop, visit the surgery, library, post office etc. Drivers and escorts are needed on a voluntary basis to help maintain this established and valuable service. The service operates to a timetable on 4 days/mornings per week. Everyone is very friendly and co-operative, committed and loyal. The bus is also available for private hire as long as the 4-day service is carried out. The private hire drivers are remunerated.

Blues looking to finish season of PostSport contrasts on a high with away win CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping to finish their campaign on a high by chalking up their third win on the bounce.

It's been a season of ups and downs for Scott Ashley's side.

It started with hopes of a promotion push with the Oaklands Park faithful full of hope they could seal a swift return to National League rugby.

But a poor run around the New Year when the side were hit badly by injuries saw Chi lose ground on their top-of-the-table rivals and condemned them to another year in London One South.

On the plus side of things, the first XV have shown they have real depth, with a number of promising youngsters making their debuts this term.

And, when it came down to it, Chi have put in the performances - such as losing just once in their past six matches - which has sealed fourth spot in a very competitive division.

Ashley's side registered their second win in a row last weekend when they beat relegationthreatened Old Colfeians 37-34 in the last home game of the year.

THey end the season tomorrow with a trip to

Sevenoaks (2pm).

Travelling Chi fans will want to see more of the belief that the team showed last weekend in that bonus point win.

After falling 13-10 behind in a frenetic opening period, Jack Hamilton-Fox made the most of an overlap to dot down in Vultures Corner and put Blues in front.

THe visitors hit back almost immediately.

But a clever offload from Jack Arden-Brown created space for Aaron Davies to run through and score under the posts, giving Chi a 20-17 lead at the turnaround.

Playing down the slope, Chichester took the attack to the opposition.

Seven minutes after the restart, Old Colfeians were reduced to 14 men. Chris Johnson took advantage, surging over for the Blues' third try of the afternoon. But the visitors, who are fighting for the lives at the bottom of London One South, kept on battling and tied things up after two quick-fire scores.

Chi hit back. After some sustained pressure, Josh Goodwin fed Charlie Wallace to dive over for Chichester’s fourth try. THe visitors did manage one more try but it was not enough to prevent Blues from winning the match.

DARTS: THe Legends showed their true credentials by sweeping all categories in the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out darts league.

THe team were crowned singles, doubles and division one winners at the trophy presentation evening at the Newtown Social Club while QE2 took the runners up spots in all three competitions.

In division two, Hunston Club did a clean sweep with Chichester Snooker Club the overall runners up.

THe presentation evening also saw 44 players take part in the blind pairs knockout competition.

Pitching players from different clubs together, it is a friendly competition in name only.

After some strong play, the first semifinal saw Cliff Prior (QE2) & Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers) win 2-0 over Jack Danahar (QE2) & Dave Owens (Hoffmeisters). Cooper also managed a 120 in-shot during this game.

BOGNOR youngster Izzy Hauxwell showed she can compete with the country's best after stealing a bronze medal in the English Championship trampolining qualifiers.

THe Regis School pupil headed to Gillingham as part of the ever-improving cohort from the Dragonflyers Club.

Under the pressure of competing against some of the best young jumpers in the south east, Izzy produced two incredible ten bounce routines of immense power under extreme control to final in the 15/16 yrs event.

THe display included a voluntary routine of 7.4 difficulty which contained 13 somersaults in a ten bounce routine which the judges deemed to be executed superbly.

THis third place and fantastic score ranks Izzy fourth in England in her category.

With only one qualifier in Telford left, club coaches say that Hauxwell is well on her way to securing a place at the prestigious English championships later this year.

Coach Linda O'Leary said it would be "a sensational achievement".

Following the event, team mates Sofija Kalnicenko are ranked ninth and Libby Morton 19th in their own respective divisions.

O'Leary said: "THese performances are a tremendous achievement against England's elite trampoline clubs with this, their first year at this relatively new event.

"Flyers have now proven themselves across all national competition against every elite trampoline club having reached finals for many years on the UK national scene at national development, league and schools."

Dragonflyers hold sessions at THe Regis School for varying abilities throughout the week.

THe club, which is open to people of all ages, is now offering recreational sessions for those that want to give the sport a try.

Pennells hit a 180 in their winning first leg, but Ragless & Palmer took the next two legs with Palmer hitting the bullseye to finish a leg.

THe final saw Prior hit the bull to start, following it up with a 130 in-shot.

Despite reaching the double first, Prior and Cooper missed a chance to win the leg repeatedly. Ragless & Palmer caught up but could not take advantage - leaving Prior to hit double 4 to take the first leg.

THe second leg saw Palmer hit double 1 to start, and Ragless hit a 140. With their opponents struggling. Palmer hit double top for a 54 out-shot and the second leg.

THe third leg saw Cooper get the first in-shot and, after some strong scoring from both pairs, Cooper hit the shot to take the leg.

Leg four saw Palmer get the in-shot, while Ragless hit a ton and 123. Cooper & Prior caught up, though, with scores of 70, 95, 80, 100 & 100, but it wasn't in time, as Ragless hit double 10 to take it all the way.

THe decider saw Prior & Cooper start well. THey kept up the pressure, with Prior hitting a ton and a 140.

On his next throw he hit double top for the win, making himself and Cooper the Blind Pairs Champions, and taking home ÂŁ90 between them.

THe Purple and Greens defeated Overton 33-12 on the road to seal a bonus point win and clinch second spot in Hampshire One. It caps an excellent season for Bognor, who finished just five points behind United Services Portsmouth, who lost just once all season in winning the crown.

Last weekend's performance encapsulated the Purple and Greens' season. THey started strongly, when Paddy Burnett scored straight from the kick off.

Two further scores from centre Sam Newcombe put Bognor into a 19-0 half time lead. Newcombe completed his hat-trick in the second period with Josh Riggall also crossing to round off the win.

Pagham's promotion push put on hold after defeat at leaders

Title beyond Chi after loss CHICHESTER City's title hopes are now a distant dream despite springing a surprise win over a top-of-the-table rival.

With just three games of the SCFL Premier season to go, Miles Rutherford's side sit fourth, 13 points off league leaders Haywards Heath with two games in hand.

THings could have been so much better for Chi, but they suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Hassocks at Oaklands Park last weekend.

City made amends on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory against second-place THree Bridges.

But even with those three points, Chi's form has failed them when it matters most and they are mathematically unable to overhaul the leaders.

All is not lost for Rutherford's side as they still remain in the hunt for a promotion place to the Isthmian South for next season With a trip to strugglers Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm), followed by a home clash against Newhaven on Tuesday (7.45pm), Chi know they could still sneak into second spot if results go their way.

But, after the Hassocks defeat made it two losses in a row, they can afford no slipups as the season ends.

Chi never got going in the match last weekend against a Robins side who are battling against the drop.

After a quiet first half, it was the visitors who took the lead through Michael Death on the hour mark.

Hassocks doubled their lead ten minutes later when George Galbraith-Gibbons bundled home a second.

Chi did hit back through Scott Jones shortly after, making it 23 in the league for him this term. But, even with five attackers on the pitch in the final ten minutes, they were unable to find a way past the Hassocks defence.

THings improved on Tuesday when early strikes from Dan Hutchings (2) and Jones fired them into a lead which they never looked like relinquishing.

John Lansdale pulled one back for the visitors with ten minutes to play but Chi held on to seal the win.

Regardless, Bridges are eight points clear of City so it would take something remarkable for the tables to turn.

PAGHAM are being urged to keep on fighting until the end of the season - despite a 3-0 loss to the league leaders leaving them adrift in the hunt for the SCFL crown.

A run of 15 league games unbeaten had seen the Lions go into the final month of the season within touching distance of the top of the table.

But Pagham lost out on the chance to leapfrog over leaders Haywards Heath when the top team inflicted a 3-0 defeat on them last weekend.

With THree Bridges flying in second, even a place in the promotion places looks to be out of the Nyetimber Lane side's grasp.

But there is still a chance of silverware with a local derby against Chichester City lined up for May 2 at Lancing's Culver Road in the final of the RUR Charity Cup. Before then, Pagham welcome Eastbourne Town to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) looking for a win to keep on the pressure on the sides above them.

Sids want return to senior level Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce says the club still has its sights on promotion back to senior football - in spite of a lack of FA clear guidelines on how the system will work this season.

With just three weeks of the season to go, the Sids sit fourth in the SCFL Division Two. Even with six games to squeeze in between now and the first week of May, a gap of eight points to leaders Rustington means a tilt at the title now appears beyond them.

But Pearce's charges can still seal second and with a trip to third-placed Roffey coming

up tomorrow (3pm), a Sids win would put them level on points with Alfold in second.

THe task will not be an easy one. Just four points separate second and sixth in the 14 team division. Even if Sids do seal the runners up spot, Pearce says 'nothing is set in concrete that second would seal a return to step six of the non-league pyramid.

He said: "It all depends on the FA restructuring. THe ground has been passed for step six so everything is in place so it's over to the FA and powers that be.

"To be sure we are aiming for the top two.

"THere are not many other clubs in the division that are ready to go up.

"As a club you always want to progress and we don't want players that don't want to move forward. We all want to progress, that's why everyone is involved.

"THere is a cost always involved but if it's available it's important that we take it and then see where it gets us."

Sids took a big step towards possible promotion with a 4-0 victory over sixth-placed Westfield last weekend. Callum Dowdell, Tom Bayley and a brace from Dan Bassil sealed the win for the Recreation Ground side.

Pearce's team were also in action last night when they played Rustington in the semifinal of the league two cup at Nyetimber Lane.

THe winners will face Bosham, who beat Cowfold on Tuesday in the other semi-final 2-1 thanks to goals from Graeme Dowden and Grant Radmore. THe Robins are level on points with Sids after making it eight wins on the bounce in all competitions away at Roffey.

A goal in each half from Callum Coker sealed the 2-0 win for the defending champions.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey will look to end their season on a high with consecutive away days at Billingshurst tomorrow (3pm) and at Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

THe Blues recorded their first win in eight when they beat St Francis Rangers 3-1 last weekend. THat was followed up with a 2-2 draw against Midhurst on Tuesday.

No place like home for Chi Ladies run-in CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking to bounce back to winning ways as they round off the season with five home games on the spin.

Matt Wright's side have shown they are more than up to the challenge of life in the third tier of the women's game, currently sitting eighth in the 12-team FA Premier League South.

Chi still have games in hand on those around them. And they start their run-in with a home match against bottom side Swindon Town Ladies at Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm).

After suffering a 3-1 reverse at Coventry United Ladies last time out, City will be out to put in a strong performance in front of their home crowd.

Ali Hall was the star for United, hitting a hat-trick while Chi had only Jade Widdow’s volleyed effort to celebrate.

Speaking after the defeat, Wright said: "Coventry just gave a bit of quality in areas that we didn’t, and they deserved the win.

"However, we don’t look at this as unsurpassable. When they come down to us, we’ll give them a good game.

“Personally, I’ll reflect on the fact that I set the team up wrong as the first two goals I’ll take responsibility for not organising the players correctly.

“We all make mistakes, players and managers and I made a big one. If it hadn’t had been for that I think we would have been defensively stronger."

Relegated Rocks set to change coaching team for next season Next Game

OXFORD CITY (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has vowed there will be changes in the Rocks' dugout next season - although he failed to confirm if that would mean him stepping down as manager.

After weeks of fighting the inevitable, Bognor's relegation from National South was confirmed after a 3-2 defeat to Hemel Hempstead last week.

With just three games to go, the Nyewood Lane side are 13 points adrift and sit rock bottom at the foot of the table.

THe immediate focus turns to picking up points in the next week against Oxford City away tomorrow (3pm) and at home versus inform Chelmsford City on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But all the talk on the terrace will be on what will happen at the club next season when Bognor make an immediate return to the Isthmian Premier. With relegation confirmed, the Post asked Pearce if he would be stepping down from the manager's role.

He said: "I don't know. I will be talking to the players but you could say that if the vast majority re-sign then they have not got a problem with me or the club.

"One thing is certain - we will be looking to increase the management team in the summer."

THe Rocks' relegation was confirmed after that home loss to Hemel. Two early goals for the visitors made things difficult for Pearce's side. A third followed with 20 minutes to

go. Late strikes from Ollie Pearce and Justin Amaluzor gave Bognor hope. But they were unable to find the equaliser.

THe odd goal was the difference on Tuesday evening too when Rocks lost 2-1 at Concord Rangers, Ibra Sekajja bagging a consolation.

Pearce said: "As a club we are very disappointed that we have not been able to stay at step two of the game.

"But I cannot complain about the efforts of the main group of players who, from a managing and coaching point of view, have been excellent.

"On Tuesday some of the football was exceptional. Some of the intricate passing was far above this level of the game, but unfortunately once again we lost.

"I feel for them as there's nothing worse than being part of a relegation team but they can hold their own heads high."

So what chance then of the Rocks picking up points to round off the season and avoid finishing bottom?

Pearce said: "I would like to do that but there are three in-form teams in the league and we're playing two of them at home in the last week of the season. One of them [Dartford] is going for the title and the other is going for the playoffs [Chelmsford].

"If the lads put in the effort they put in last night they have a good chance of giving those sides a little bit of a fright."

Rocks to start rebuilding work IT'S BEEN coming for weeks. But the inevitable was finally confirmed on Saturday when the 3-2 defeat at home to Hemel Hempstead confirmed the Rocks' relegation back to the Isthmian Premier.

It was always going to be a tough task for Jack Pearce's side.

With one of the smallest budgets in National South, Bognor were up against it from day one in their bid to stay in the second tier of nonleague football.

Saturday's loss in some ways summed up the season. Not much difference on the whole, but when it came down to it, Bognor were lacking at both ends of the pitch.

Now with relegation confirmed, the time is to start thinking about next year.

A number of players, particularly those on loan, will not be with the club next season.

Instead, the Rocks will look to rebuild and recruit locally, creating a nucleus of a side which will puts the team before the individual.

THere's also another big question and that's around the manager. Pearce made clear his return to the dugout would never be a longterm fix. He will now be thinking hard on who comes in to the management team, with a young and hungry face the likely addition.

AFTER weeks of anticipation, the loss last Saturday against Hemel confirmed the relegation.

We all sort of knew it was around the corner And while there was some false hope when we beat St Albans, all the lads knew it was coming, which means our approach has been to let the shackles come off and give the fans something to cheer.

THe key thing about the St Albans match is that we got our noses in front meaning we had something to defend and fight for.

Whenever you go 2-0 up though, the natural instinct is to sit back and defend.

We did OK up until the last 20 minutes when they got on top.

THen we conceded a goal and the penalty which very nearly ended up costing us.

In other games we have conceded very early on and when that happens it feels like it resonates that we will lose.

We saw that lack of resilience on Saturday. It was a very disappointing match but you simply cannot atone for individual mistakes.

It seems like something that has happened every week for us but, after two or three errors before you know it, the game is over.

Tuesday's trip to Concord to play a team who are just above the relegation zone showed that there is not much between us and them.

THe big difference is that we have been in a rut for most of the year but there is no gulf at all between the two sides.

Given that we have beaten sides who are in the play-offs this season, it's proof that anyone can beat anyone in this league.

Before the Hemel match there was a nice moment on the pitch when I posed for a picture with one of the mascots for the day.

I've not played for a little while because of the shoulder injury so it's nice that people are still aware I am involved in

the club.

As for the injury, my recovery is going well after surgery.

I've had six sessions of physio and now on to weight- bearing stuff. It's good to be out of the sling and I'm allowed to run again, albeit at 3/4 speed. It's been quite nice to have the movement of my arm back and get the ball at my feet again.

Naturally, as I've not been playing you do think what would have happened if we have had everyone fit and Jack had got in someone to score goals.

But that is immaterial really and, while I do think that things may have been different and we could have picked up a few extra points here and there, looking ahead to next year I think carrying that feeling over is a bad place to be.

As for next season, we've started talking about it as players and I'd say 90 per cent of the lads are keen to stay and ply their trade in the league below.

I think one of the biggest issues is what happens around the manager role.

THe general view is that we want someone at the helm who is in place early so that

by June time they are here and the team has someone to kick us on a bit.

Before that, we have three games left. Out of those matches, we could get nine points or we could get none.

THe fact is that we're down and we're playing sides who have things to play for.

I do fancy us to get something against Chelmsford and away at Oxford. I think we could nick a point. As for Dartford, they will come to us on the last day of the season knowing they will probably have to win the match to win the league.

But if we get our noses in front then who knows what could happen.

Personally speaking, I think it would be good for local football if Havant & Waterlooville can win the title.
