Increase on housing register

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THERE is an increase in numbers of four per week on Chichester District Council's housing register.

THe news that there is almost an extra 200 households on the register now than January last year came at Tuesday's cabinet meeting.

RANGES FOR 2018

Members of the cabinet recommended the approval to explore the proposal for a compulsory purchase order (CPO) of an area of land in Birdham to build more affordable homes.

An officer at Chichester District Council said: “We currently have 14 local households from Birdham on the register. At the moment within the local plan there is only likely to be 39

affordable homes.

"We are seeing an increase in the numbers on our housing register.

"THere is almost an extra 200 households on our register now than January last year.”

THe field, North West of the Saltings at Crooked Lane has already received the green light for planning permission in 2013 with housing association, THe Hyde Group seeking to bring forward

an affordable housing development.

A report was carried out to help facilitate the delivery of an affordable housing scheme through compulsory purchase of the access to the site.

Leader of the Council, Tony Dignum said: “I think it’s a most important application and we are very short of affordable houses and you will see that it’s a useful mix of housing."

Funding for the extension of hall

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DONNINGTON could receive over £150,000 from the district council to help fund the proposed extension to its parish hall.

THe cabinet of Chichester District Council have recommended to council the release of £183,938.44 Section 106 community facilities monies plus interest accrued to the date of release to Donnington Parochial Church Council for an extension to the hall.

THe money was received by the District Council in November 2013 which was secured from the development of land at Southfields Close.

Donnington Parish Hall is the closest community building to the development location, and the only facility within the parish. Donnington Parochial Church Council has identified the range of wider community activity that takes place at that location and historically developed a proposal to extend the building to provide additional space.

Leader of the council, Cllr Tony Dignum, said: “THis project presses all the buttons. It’s the closest community hall to the new development. It’s the only community hall in the parish and it is well used.

"It’s got planning permission and as Cllr Lintill pointed out there has been substantial contribution from the parochial church council itself.

"It’s not just leaning on us for support. I think it’s to be totally commended.”

THe proposed extension would provide a small hall with a small kitchen and toilets, accessible by its own entrance north of the building. THis would enable independent use of this space either when the rest of the building is in use or as a sole hire.

Since November 2013, officers from the council have been working closely with representatives of Donnington Parochial Church Council to encourage and understand how the capacity of the building could be increased and to best effect.

Cllr Roger Barrow said: “I agree, I think it’s very important. THey have had to wait a very long time for this, since November 2013.

"I think we should support it. I just wonder what more they want to do and how they are hoping to raise the funds.”

David Hyland, the community engagement manager at Chichester District Council, responded: “THe additional phases of the proposed redevelopment include further storage areas and the raising of the roof in the main hall to create more light.

"While those are desired, they can happen at any point in the future so the Donnington Parochial Church Council will look at funding opportunities to progress those in the future. Critically, the proposals before us are those which create greater floor space and greater use.”

THE ARCHDEACON of Chichester, THe Venerable Douglas McKittrick, has announced his retirement from the post with effect from July, 1 2018.

Forty-one years since his ordination as deacon and having served principally in two dioceses - Liverpool and Chichester - Archdeacon Douglas is looking forward to retirement to Kirkbymoorside in the North Yorkshire Moors, where he will continue to enjoy his love of walking in the great outdoors with his two dogs.

It was in 1997 that Douglas made the long trip to the Sussex coast where he was first Vicar of St Peter's with THe Chapel Royal and Rural Dean of Brighton before taking up the post of

Archdeacon of Chichester in 2002.

For 16 years, Douglas has provided support and encouragement to clergy and laity in his patch alongside two bishops of Chichester.

Archdeacon Douglas said: “I thank God for calling me to ministerial priesthood and for the grace given to fulfil what is undoubtedly a joyous, though demanding vocation. I have made so many friends over my 40 years as a priest, people from all walks of life who have enriched me both as a person and a priest."

THere will be a Eucharist in Chichester Cathedral on St Richard’s Day, June 16, at 3 pm, to give thanks for Douglas’ 40 years of priestly life.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TRUSTEES of a historic theatre and cinema in Selsey have unveiled plans to restore it to its former glory.

THe Pavilion THeatre on Selsey High Street was built in 1913, but fell into disrepair since closing in the 1960s.

After public consultation, revised plans by local architects Douglas Briggs Partnership, and in collaboration with the Selsey Pavilion Trust, have been submitted to Chichester District Council.

THe iconic building is on the THeatres

Trust ‘at risk’ register and a planning application has been submitted for the theatre and coffee shop to be restored as a social and cultural venue for local residents and visitors to Selsey.

THe mission is to restore it to modern standards and conserve its much loved historic atmosphere.

It is envisaged that the theatre will become a multifunctional community and performance space.

THe Art Deco High Street frontage will be restored, and plans include a 150 seat auditorium, disabled access, and improvements to facilities for the public and for performers.

Trustee and Selsey resident Christian Skelton believes it is an exciting time for the project. He said: "We believe the restoration will make a positive contribution to the local community and character of the conservation area.

"THe plans are impressive and Selsey Town Council have already reserved £35,000 to assist with the regeneration of the theatre.

"We’ve had so much interest and support from local people who see the theatre as part of Selsey’s heritage.

Bringing it back to life will make the High Street a more vibrant place."

From page one Members of the cabinet agreed that officers were authorised to spend up to £27,000 on the basis that this would be reimbursed by Hyde.

THe planning permission, which was granted in November 2013, allows for the development of 15 new affordable dwellings and associated external works for households with a local connection to the area.

THe development will include: two one-bedroom bungalows, one two-bedroom bungalow, eight two-bedroom houses, three threebedroom houses and one fourbedroom house.

THis scheme was brought forward through the Chichester Rural Partnership and £305,840 of the partnership money has been allocated to help deliver the scheme.

THe Hyde Group is the owner of the development site but only has rights of entry and right of way over the access for agricultural purposes.

THe access to the site is unregistered as to ownership which has delayed further development on the site.

Hyde has made a formal request to the council to assess whether the access site meets the statutory

requirement for compulsory purchase order.

THe council have confirmed that they would require Hyde Group to underwrite the costs of any compulsory purchase order and to cover the costs of the initial land referencing work.

In January, Chichester District Council planning officers gave preapplication advice to Hyde on the viability of an alternative access route into the site.

It was concluded that there are fundamental concerns with the proposed alternative access and it would be unlikely to receive support.

THe negative publicity of a CPO being delivered have been assessed by the council but these have been weighted against the reputation risks to the council of being perceived as not supporting an affordable housing scheme for local people.

Cllr Eileen Lintill said: “THis report and what we are asking cabinet to approve will enable us to give an informed decision by council. THe key word there is informed.

"Without this piece of work we don’t know where we are going to be so I think we should go ahead with this.”

Take off for funds to restore tower

In line with the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, a dedicated project team has registered a community interest company in order to launch the first phase of crowdfunding, in an attempt to restore the tower.

BUDDING authors curious about writing a best-seller or how a book makes its way into print are being urged to attend the University of Chichester’s publishing panel next week.

THe annual event returns on Wednesday, April 18, to lift the veil on the often-misunderstood world of publishing.

Editors and agents from leading agencies will gather to answer questions from 6.30pm at the University’s Bishop Otter campus.

It will be hosted by English and creative writing senior lecturer Karen Stevens and is free to enter for all students, staff, and members of the public.

RAF Tangmere left in the village, since the closure of the base in 1970.

It was awarded Grade II-listed status in 2011 and was placed on the heritageat-risk register in 2015 by Chichester District Council.

Cllr Matt Gover-Wren, of Tangmere Parish Council, said: “We’re making wonderful progress. It’s humbling to see so much enthusiasm and passion for this project.

"It is almost 50 years since RAF Tangmere closed.

“THe centenary seemed the right time to start this fundraising process, given the tower’s prominence in RAF Tangmere’s history. After all, it was the beacon that guided our men and women home."

THis first phase of fundraising is limited to £10,000, which is needed to secure the site and build funds to help facilitate a conservation architect and building survey. THis will determine the current state of the building as well as floor plans.

Further rounds of fundraising for the more advanced stages of the project will follow, ultimately leading to a bid of heritage lottery funding through a partnership consortium which includes Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, the University of Chichester and the Tangmere Local History Group.

THe tower’s restoration campaign has gained the support of Chichester MP Gillian Keegan, renowned historian Paul Reed and

Mr Dudley said: "We in the museum have expressed our interest and support for the project. In particular, by way of providing expertise to restore and renovate the former Visual Control

Room on the top floor of the building."

THe tower was re-built in 1944 in time for D-Day, controlling a number of local airfields. THe original control tower was destroyed in the German attack of 16 August 1940, where 13 people were killed.

Local Hero from Landrover BAR Inspires Students Students at Bourne Community College had their Students learnt about the journey that the sailing team spirits lifted on a grey, rainy Wednesday, when they met have taken to reach the America’s Cup and the value local hero, Freddie Carr. of teamwork.

Freddie, a professional sailor and member of Ben Ainslie’s Racing team, Land Rover BAR, delivered an inspirational talk to 300 students from Years 9 and10 about the importance of having goals and aspirations for the future. He instilled the need for hard work and determination, even in the face of setbacks.

Students commented on what an inspiring talk they thought it was, and how pleased they were that Freddie gave up his time to visit our school.

Remembering three airmen killed in a flying accident

GUESTS attended a special memorial service on Saturday at Oving, near Chichester.

A centennial memorial service was held to honour the three airmen from 92 Squadron RAF killed in a flying accident.

On April 7, 1918, just a week after the formation of the Royal Air Force, two aircraft, a single seat Sopwith Pup fighter and a two-seat Avro 504K trainer from 92 Squadron, collided in mid-air over the flying station at Tangmere.

One winner from the Goodwood flying school donated his winning egg to the children's ward at St Richards.

At the monthly business meeting, members voted to donate over £2,500 to various requests for help.

THe club was asked if it could help the Marie Curie cancer charity with its collection and raised over £900 for its work.

Caroline Nicholls, the High Sheriff of West Sussex, said: "I think it's critically important to be here. Not only to remember those who gave so much 100 years ago but also for younger people to see the sacrifices that were made."

As part of the RAF 100 programme this year, the Bognor Regis RAF Association Branch held the memorial service at St Andrew's Church together with 92 Squadron, its Association and the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

A flypast of representative First World War aircraft flown by 92 Squadron followed the service.

Chichester MP, Gillian Keegan said: "It's the year of celebrating the RAF's 100 years so there's a big focus on the RAF and I think this story is really quite poignant, to be so young and to be training. People hadn't been flying that long and planes were all very new.

"To die so tragically in a training accident just before the war is very poignant. I think it's great that we remember these occasions and we do it so well. Organising all this, here in the churchyard in Oving to remember three pilots who died 100 years ago is a special thing to do."

City egg hunt is cracking fun

THe egg-citing competition, which started on March 31, was held by Chichester Business Improvement District.

THere were 47 shops around the city taking part in the Easter egg hunt, each playing host to a numbered egg for visitors to note down on their competition entry forms.

THe egg hunt, which runs until tomorrow (April 14) will see one lucky person or family scoop all the prizes which have been kindly donated by city centre businesses Treats have been supplied from businesses including THe Novium, THe Body Shop, Wallis, Whirligig, Solutions Inc, Real Burger Kitchen, Hotter, Pandora, Jigsaw, Chichester Tailor, Crew Clothing Hennings, Phone Boss and Bearded Bob's.

Wallis’ manager Mandy Medhurst, who helped with the idea of the trail said: "What a fantastic time we have all had with the Easter Egg Trail. It has been

great fun welcoming all the families and new faces into our shop. We can’t wait to get involved again."

Whitby’s Managers Mark and Dianne said: "It was so nice to see so many families enjoying the Easter Egg Trail activity. It brought lots of new faces to our business and the atmosphere was lovely. We are so glad we took part and got involved."

Jeanette Hockley, members service manager at Chichester BID said: "THe idea of the Easter Egg Trail was to give our city visitors a reason to stay longer.

"We have seen a number of families staying for as long as 4 hours to complete the trail. We have also had great reports from businesses saying that there was a number of families spending while they were here.

"We know that families want something to do - one family counted that they did 15,000 steps! We also want people to explore the whole city and visit the shops which are not on our main streets.

"We want people to support local, it is about letting the public know where these businesses are."

Keeping an eye on the city's streets with new CCTV contract A NEW contractor has been appointed for the CCTV service provided in the city.

THe approval was given at Chichester District Council's cabinet meeting on Tuesday but the name of the supplier has not been named due to confidentiality.

THe CCTV service has cameras located in council-owned car parks and on-street in Chichester, Selsey, Midhurst, Petworth, East Wittering and Bosham.

Sussex Police and ChiBAC (Chichester Business Against Crime) both highly value the CCTV service with a close working relationship having developed between these agencies and the council.

THe provision of CCTV across the district has been considered and supported given the national security issues along with the low levels of crime across the district which are believed to be partly as a result of

CCTV monitoring being in place.

As the existing contract for staffing the CCTV office is due to expire, a procurement exercise was undertaken to seek a contractor moving forward.

Budget provision has been made for this service and various options have been explored which confirmed that CCTV should remain in place.

Leader of the council, Cllr Tony Dignum, said: "I think all of us realise in these troubling times to have a good CCTV is essential for the security of our people.

"I am pleased to see that other options, including reviewing the number and location of cameras, is currently underway.

"I also think that the hours of operation could do with a looking at perhaps in a later report.

"We shouldn't stint on providing a secure and very reliable cameras and the right hours of operation to secure our streets and our car parks."

` Midhurst arrest POLICE have arrested and charged a man with drug offences after he was searched in Midhurst.

Marcus Semedo, 18, was spotted acting suspiciously in his vehicle which was parked in Elsted Road, Elsted, near Chichester, around 5.55pm on Saturday, April 7.

Officers inspected the vehicle and Semedo from Rogate, Petersfield, was arrested and later charged with possession of a class B drug (cannabis) and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Semedo was released on bail and will appear at Wothing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 24.

A life of miracles beautifully told as opera returns to city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to St Paul's Church in Chichester were treated to a very moving performance on Wednesday evening.

THe opera, called PUSH was performed for the second time this year after a sellout show in the Chichester Cathedral in January.

THe opera tells the story of Simon Gronowski, a tragic tale which illustrates the horrors of the Holocaust.

Simon lived in Brussels, where he was taken at the age of 11, along with his mother and sister. Simon and his family were deported on the 20th transport to leave Mechelen. THree Belgian resistance members stopped the train and fought the German train guards. Simon's mother helped him down to the footstep and pushed him off the train.

Cllr Clare Apel, chair of Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day Committee said after the performance: "All the performers standing here have made this performance of PUSH so special. I'd just like to add that when some of these people and young children started rehearsals, many of them had never sung or acted before, and they have learnt the whole score off by heart, which to me is a complete miracle and they are amazing."

Simon wasn't originally sure about the plans to turn his story in to a show. He said: "An English journalist, Sarah Ehrlich based

in Brussels interviewed me for the BBC and told my story to composer, Howard Moody and introduced me to him.

"Howard said to me: "Your story is extraordinary and for my next opera, I will compose it on your story." I said thank you but I was a little sceptical - an opera about my story, is it possible, but it is a reality.

"I have seen it at Chichester and for me it is very moving, and it is especially useful for young people, for a better world. THe Holocaust must be remembered so that it

never happens again.

"THe first performance in Chichester was great with the staging, movements, soloists, children's choirs and lights. Everything was fantastic! It is wonderful that there was a second performance in Chichester.

"When I found my father after my escape on April 19, 1943 and after the liberation of Brussels September 3, 1944, the relationship between us changed because he was sick and unhappy."

"For 60 years I have not spoken much of

the drama of my childhood and remained alone. I turned my back on the past but I have never forgotten. When I published my first book in 2002, Jean Aerts, the man who took me in, was dead (he died in 1987), but I am now in touch with his family.

"What is unique in my case, of the whole war, is firstly that an 11-year-old child was able to escape quite alone convoy of death and secondly that my Nazi jailer came to repent and ask my forgiveness, and I forgave him."

` How much are landlords spending on maintenance?

AS THE tax year came to a close last week, annual account statements were sent out to all of my landlords who employ me on a full management basis.

THe statement breaks down the total rent they have received in the tax year for each property, along with any deductions that were made. THis should make doing their self-assessments easier and help them claim the maximum tax relief they can.

THe average rent my landlords are achieving is £1,155pcm, which is 22 per cent higher than the current average rent in Chichester of £949pcm. Plus, they have received all of the rent due to them, i.e. there were no nonpaying tenants all year.

What’s more is that my unique fixed-fee structure is proving to be excellent value for my landlords; demonstrated by my average landlord being charged just 8.1 per cent in total for a full tenant find and ongoing management service.

One landlord is paying just 4.7 per cent as their property achieves a particularly high rent, meaning my fixed fee proves to be even cheaper for them.

What was also interesting to see is that my landlords are spending just £357 a year on average on property maintenance, which is just 3 per cent of the total rent they receive.

Common lettings advice is to set aside 10 per cent of your annual rent to account for property maintenance, but my landlords are doing far better than this.

I suspect this is partly because I focus on more modern properties, which should inherently have fewer issues, and because I tend to endorse the attitude of ‘prevention rather than cure’ - spending a little in the short-term to save a lot in the long-term.

Uni helps feed those in need THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester has raised hundred of pounds for the city’s food bank to help feed children and families facing crisis.

More than £350 was given to the Chichester charity from donations collected at the annual Christmas carol service.

THe foodbank, based in Orchard Street, feeds around 2,000 people each year in the city centre and across rural locations in Selsey, Midhurst, and Petworth.

THe charity was established by Joanne Kondabeka as a part-time project in 2012 but has grown in recent years because of high demand.

She said: “On average we feed about 30 people a week but rely totally on the public for funding and food donations.

“We are extremely grateful to the university and will put the money towards providing children with lunch packs to eat during the school holidays.

“If children don’t have proper meals during the holiday they often don’t have the energy to focus on school when they return, which can impact on their education.”

THe Christmas carol service included choirs and orchestras from the university and was hosted at Chichester Cathedral in December.

On handing over the cheque, university Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Longmore said: “We are delighted to make this contribution to support the foodbank’s important work in our community.

“It’s fitting that the carol service, which brings the university together with the community, should be the event which raises crucial funds for an indispensable charity.”

Rocking up funds for charity

Chichester Post's very own property columnist, Clive Janes of CRJ Lettings, made the donation after his Facebook post was shared well over 200 times.

Clive was at Cineworld in Chichester filling up his newsletter stand when he found the rock hidden among the papers.

He took a picture and posted it on his company's Facebook page saying: "Look what I found while refilling the Chichester Property News display at Cineworld Chichester!

"I've learnt it's for Cancerwise as part of their #cancerwiserocks promotion; this one was sponsored by Spirit FM Sussex.

"Happy to donate £2 for every share this gets. Up to £500 maybe. #makemepoor #foragoodcause."

THe post was then shared and seen by hundreds of users, helping Clive to quickly reach his £500 limit. #CancerWiseRocks invites members of the public to decorate a pebble or a stone, add the scheme's hashtag on the back and hide it for someone to find.

Whoever discovers the pebble is encouraged to share a photo of the find on the centre's Facebook page and either keep it or leave it for someone else to find.

Emma Neno, a CancerWise fundraiser and founder of #CancerWiseRocks, said: "It's all about raising awareness and funds for us in the West Sussex and south east Hampshire area.

"It is about getting creative, being outside with your friends, young family and children and having fun - spread a little happiness and make people smile."

Chef cooks up success in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ONE of Britain's most respected chefs, Raymond Blanc, has said that Brexit won't affect his restaurants.

THe French chef who owns Brasserie Blanc visited his Chichester restaurant on THursday and, speaking to the Chichester Post, Mr Blanc said that although Brexit was uncertain, he was confident it would not have an impact on his restaurants.

He said: "We already have about 80 per cent less Europeans coming to England.

It is a nightmare for the service industry.

It is the biggest employer in Great Britain. We are going to have a crisis but Brasserie Blanc is probably one of the few businesses which will suffer the least because of our ability to retain staff."

Mr Blanc says they train their team well, thanks to his right-hand man, chef Clive Fretwell.

He added: "He passes on his knowledge. THat dedication and craft means everyone is so proud to work."

Mr Blanc is a big fan of the city of Chichester. He said: "Chichester is a very cultured place. I am completely amazed at how many people dine out for such a small city. It is a very pleasant and very lovely city.

"THis restaurant is one of our best performers and consistent. We are very happy to be here. About 85 per cent of our guests at this restaurant come from three miles. THat is huge."

Training as a waiter, Mr Blanc worked at the Michelin-starred Le Palais de la Bière in Besançon but was sacked after he upset the head chef.

He said: "I became a nurse, but I saw too much misery. THen I worked in a factory. You were dehumanised. THen I was lucky. I saw a restaurant in the city, I saw these waiters and at that moment I made my decision to become a chef.

First I became a cleaner. THen I did the washing up. THen I became a waiter.

"THen everything went wrong when I was so close to the kitchen. I started to tell the chef that his sauces were a bit too thick and too heavy and lacked spice. He didn't like it. He smashed a copper pan in my face. I had a broken jaw.

"On that day I lost my job. I was then exiled to England. I did come here pretending I was Napoleon, all conquering, I was very humbling! But that chef never broke my dream. We all have something special in us.

"At the age of about ten my father gave me a birthday present. It was a map of the wood and the garden. THe map showed what grew in the wood, such as wild asparagus, berries, mushrooms and where it was. It was the loveliest present I ever got from my father."

THe current Spring menu at Brasserie Blanc boasts a range of dishes. Mr Blanc is proud that his restaurant offers a change of menus through the year.

He said: "You will never see a brasserie offering four season menus. We are quite unique in that. I only act on what my mother told me about

seasonality. If the food is in season it is better taste, better texture and better quality.

"You help the farmer keep his farm, you help the village to keep its post office. You don't have to have important ingredients from miles away. It is local food and you pay half the price."

In 2008, Raymond was awarded an honorary OBE by Her Majesty the Queen, in recognition of his services in promoting culinary excellence and for raising awareness about the importance

of healthy food as a central element of family life.

Despite a section of the menu devoted to Raymond Blanc's travels and adventures around the world, he said his favourite dish on the menu would still always be a French one.

He said: "I was a partner with Virgin with Richard Branson. I was with him and two other friends and we were driving this huge Range Rover on to very hard terrain.

"We saw something which was

unbelievable. We saw these berries.

"Later we started to cook. THere were tagines, there was all sorts. I tasted one tagine in Morocco and it was absolutely divine.

"You may ask me, Raymond, you do not cook with the French anymore. I say yes, I am 150 per cent French at least. THe other 50 per cent is my travels. My best French dish is the escargot. I cannot not have that one, it's my Frenchness!"

` Flower club show DONNINGTON Flower Club's members held its spring bulb show and annual meeting last Friday.

In spite of a difficult season yet again, there was a good display of spring bulbs and early flowers delighting members with their bright colours and fragrant scents heralding the arrival of spring.

The bulb competition was won

by April Janman and the monthly table-top competitions for flowers, and fruit/vegetables were won by April Janman and Brian Turbefield respectively.

A full complement of officers and committee was re-elected at the annual meeting when it was emphasised by the club's chairman that the most important thing was to find and stimulate ideas and efforts to generate satisfactory and extra club funds.

The club's next meeting at Donnington Parish Hall will be at 7.30pm on May 4 when Roger Butler will speak about pelargoniums. On May 12, the club will be holding its annual plant sale at 2pm.

` Railways on show THIS Sunday sees Chichester Model Engineers put two of their steam locomotives on display.

The engineers will be opening their Blackberry Lane HQ from 1pm-5pm. Admission is free and train rides are free.

One of the model steam locos on show dates from around 1933 and is a model of a British locomotive captured by the Germans in the First World War, used by them and brought back after the war. The other, homemade, loco is nearing completion by club members.

Siblings step out for their first marathon BROTHER and sister Nigel and Nicola Fitzsimmons are set to run their first marathon this month.

The siblings will be taking part in the world-famous London Marathon. They will stand on the starting line buoyed by the £4,000 they have raised so far for The National Autistic Society.

Nigel, 43, from North Bersted, said: "We have been overwhelmed so far. We can't believe it. If we can make it to the £4,500 mark, that will be amazing and help the charity to continue with all the work they're doing in the world of autism.

"We are both excited and nervous but we really want to try and enjoy the marathon, be spurred on by the crowds, have some fun, put our training into practice and just really try and make it a memorable experience we can look back on and be proud of."

The brother and sister team have been inspired in their fundraising by a person very close to them who is on the autistic spectrum. They took on their mission last summer. It has included school Christmas fairs, tombolas, games and raffles on top of the full-time businesses they run.

Time was also spent - often on some particularly wet, wild, windy and bitterly cold days - on street collections. Totals of £154.39 and £79.42 were raised in Bognor Regis and Chichester centres respectively.

The fundraising will reach its peak at the marathon on April 22. Nigel said: "We feel like we've done all we can training-wise.

We're almost there.

"You can never really prepare for the illnesses and injuries along the way, of which we've encountered our fair share.

"Nicola has, unfortunately, developed a knee injury along the way so has more recently been on a more low-impact programme, which cuts out the running itself, but sees hours of training on the cross-trainer in the gym.

"The last few weeks before the marathon is about 'tapering' where you train for shorter distances now to ensure you're going out fresher on race day.

"We ran the Bournemouth half-marathon back in October 2017. But we've really been training as such from November when we found out we were awarded our places by The National Autistic Society."

Their fundraising has been backed by a range of businesses and traders. These have been led by the Southern Co-op's funeralcare and food sections.

Unique radio station set to launch appeal A MAJOR fundraising campaign is set to be launched by a unique radio station based in Bognor Regis.

Radio Respect’s volunteers are gearing up to seek £30,000 of backing for new equipment to enable it to keep broadcasting on the internet.

The radio station is the only one known to be dedicated to mental health and mental wellbeing.

But its joint founder, Chris Collins, said the equipment it had been using since its start was starting to show signs of wear and tear in its fifth year.

“The equipment is still all right but it will not last forever. We are looking for fundraising ideas so we can buy stateof-the-art equipment, which would serve us better," he said.

“We want to get rid of the ‘gremlins’ in our tech so we can provide a reliable service and reach out to anyone that loves good music, debate, interviews or has any interest in the ever-expanding mental health problems that many face.

“When we started, I either bought the equipment or it was donated to us.

We broadcast from 7pm weekdays and stream our music 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But it would be good if we could broadcast live during the daytime.

"We have 60,000 listeners and the number of listeners suffering with mental health problems is phenomenal.”

The radio station is now broadcast around the world from the Radio Respect shop in West Street.

The outlet opened six weeks ago and the broadcasts started three weeks later after a short break to enable the move from its former base in Station Road to be completed.

The story of the radio station began when daycare service worker Chris and his wife, Caroline Collins, started it with a PC and a passion to bring the mental health community closer together, helping people to understand their condition and providing a friendly voice.

Discussions are also held with professionals and listeners from the mental health world.

Chris has funded the station’s activities in its early days but its growth has led to the need for additional support.

Some of this has been provided by the prominence of the new premises.

Much of the floorspace is given over to thousands of secondhand LPs, 45s and cassettes. All genres of music are covered and eagerly bought. That is creating an income and plenty of publicity.

Chris said: “We have been doing really well since we opened. I would say we are getting 20-30 customers a day. People absolutely love the shop. " We had people coming in as soon as we opened, wanting to know what we

were doing.

“So many have said they are very pleased to see a shop selling vinyl back in the town. Having the shop has also made us better known as a radio station. Far more people know what we are doing now.

All genres are covered and popular.

"We have a lot of younger people coming in to buy the records. There’s a warmth to music on a vinyl you just don’t get on a CD or download.

“It’s about holding that physical product and the fact the files have not been compressed like they have for other formats," Chris said.

“And, nine times out of ten, if you buy a double album, you have a work of art when you open the gatefold.

Downloading stuff is so sterile in comparision.”

The shop also sells retro equipment on which to play the records. CDs and DVDs are on sale as well. Chris helps in the shop on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A rota of Radio Respect’s 15 volunteers take charge at other times and help out.

Since starting, Radio Respect has become a community interest company to formalise its status and has linked closely with another CIC, Granddad’s Front Room.

It was the move of Granddad’s Front Room to the High Street which enabled Radio Respect to set up shop in its former premises.

Leading citizens recognised TWO NOTABLE residents of Bognor Regis have received awards from the town's mayor.

Cllr Phil Woodall presented the first Civic Award for Young People - created to recognise a young person he had met in his year of office and who had made a significant impact on the town. He presented this to Lauren Ford, who chairs the South Bersted School Council.

A spokesman for Cllr Woodall said: "Lauren was chosen for her exceptional commitment to the cause, leadership and chairing skills, while the school council visited the town hall for its meeting in December.

"Lauren was present at the civic reception to receive her award, along with her parents and deputy headteacher, Mr Goodwin."

Cllr Woodall also presented the Good Citizen Award to Sarah Boote-Cook for her work in organising many community events in the

town. This has included helping organisations such as Bognor Regis Carnival Association, International Bognor Birdman, the town's kite festival and its swimming club.

Cllr Woodall held the reception at Butlin's in Bognor Regis with thanks to the resort director, Jeremy Pardey.

Dozens of guests attended the event.

Live music was provided by the thoroughly entertaining and energetic RAFA Club Skiffle Band, with help from the mayor on tambourine.

The evening's highlight was the presentation of just over £35,000 in grant aid from Bognor Regis Town Council to more than 20 organisations to help them to deliver their vital services.

` Musicians' concert UNDER and postgraduate students will be showing their musical skills at a concert in Bognor Regis.

The head of vocal studies at the University of Chichester, Susan Legg, is presenting the group of students at the event. It is being hosted by Bognor Regis Music Club at 7pm tomorrow at its concert room at 2 Sudley Road.

The programme will consist of an excited and varied solo and ensemble repertoire. The composers will range from Mozart to Bernstein.

The performers will be Ellie Farmer, Kiera Smitheram and Grace Crumplin (sopranos), Jamie Formoy (tenor), Beth Gallimore (piano), and Lauryn Lewis and Emma Francis (clarinets).

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "Each year we look forward to this concert which gives students an opportunity to play in front of a sympathetic audience.

"We know the performers will be of a high standard, reflecting the quality of the music department, which is the largest in the country with over 1,000 students."

Entry at the door is £6 for members, £8 visitors and students will be admitted free of charge.

Experts help to bring church's history alive f Evie at the service on Easter Sunday

Evie is top dog at Sunday service A PETS as Therapy (PAT) dog, from Bracklesham was the special guest at Bognor Regis Salvation Army Easter Sunday service.

Evie, a fox red labrador, was nominated for a national HiLife PAT Dog of the Year award by the people she helped.

The ten-year-old dog then received the runner-up position in the competition which was announced at Crufts earlier this year.

Owner Alexandra Hughes said: "The people made such a fuss of her and congratulated her winning runner-up in the national competition and were very interested in seeing her trophy, rosette and certificate.

"The children were also excited to meet Evie and played with her after the service."

A retired Salvation Army officer with a rank of major, Alexandra, and Evie visit care homes and a stroke ward.

Evie also regularly visits a centre for adults with learning difficulties. Evie was the nation's runner up out of nearly 6,000 PAT dogs.

Pets As Therapy is an independently funded charity with more than 5,000 volunteers.

Its registered PAT dogs and other pets all provide animal-assisted therapy and bring comfort, smiles and friendship to thousands of people every week.

HISTORY experts enlightened dozens of enthusiasts about the past of Slindon's parish church.

The panel brought alive the details about how the Grade-I listed St Mary's Church was given its current appearance.

Moira Richards was one of those who helped to arrange the afternoon. She said: "It was very successful and we had over 60 people present in the church for the afternoon."

The afternoon was led by ecclesiastical historian Dr Andrew Foster. He has

written extensively about the clergy, churches and cathedrals of the early modern period and most recently about Slindon.

He is the literary director of the Sussex Record Office and an honorary research fellow at the University of Kent.

He was joined by Martin Jones, who has written an architectural article about Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, with more in preparation.

In 1865/66, Jackson was commissioned to restore and modernise a neglected medieval parish church in Slindon.

That work transformed the church and its result is still important today.

Jackson went on to become a lauded Victorian architect and polymath.

Mr Jones has also had his research on Maurice Smelt, the rector of Binsted and Slindon between 1815 and 1865, published in the Sussex Archaeological Society's 2017 volume.

The third speaker on the day was one of Slindon History Society's founding members, Phil Berry.

There has been a church on the site of St Mary's for more than 900 years.

BOSTON Tea Party, the purposeful café chain are opening their latest café in Chichester this May. The Bristol-based company will unveil its 22nd cafe on Baffins Lane. Renovations are underway to complete the new café and is due to open in May creating 30 new jobs for the town, and offering a spacious, 110-seated restaurant.

Boston Tea Party’s family-friendly cafés serve up a range of ethically sourced food and drink, including its award-winning brunch and breakfasts, homemade cakes, lunches and main meals alongside specialty coffees and loose-leaf teas.

Around the world tour on offer on store's shelves Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com MORRISONS in Bognor Regis beckoned as I examined some of this weekend's deals which end on next Tuesday, I am reliably informed.

I began the oenological examination by comparing two Chardonnays both retailing for £5.50. Why Chardonnay? you may ask - well, cheap over-oaked New World Chardonnays late last century have led to a wariness of Chardonnay for some people, but the modern style, as was the traditional French style thereof, is more refined, well-balanced and an excellent food pairing!

The 2015 Le Téméraire Chardonnay from the Languedoc region of southern France is aromatic with citrus and apple flavours and a vestige of hazelnut and has a pleasing finish and does not remotely disappoint!

South America, Chile to be precise, is the provenance of the 2016 Head Honcho Chardonnay designed to appeal to a younger consumer base with its quirky and striking label depicting flora and fauna native to Chile.

This wine sports a good nose, is fresh on the palate and is a veritable melon and pineapple taste-feast with a lingering aftertaste - a visual and sensory experience to savour!

Now re-booting to Italy, so to speak, I was able to procure a 2016 Morrison's Soave Classico - another wine which has enhanced its reputation of late. This example from the oldest part of Verona (rings a bell, Will?) is fragrant with floral aromas and exudes citrus and apple flavours and fully justifies its £6.75 price tag!

For just £8 expended, the Morrison's White Burgundy punched well above its weight and turned out to be fragrant and complex, slightly creamy in texture with green apple and grass complementing white peach flavours - one fully meriting your attention!

Scaling the lofty heights of an outlay of £12, my last white wine selection was that of a 2016 Domaine des Côtes Blanches which proved to be crisp , fruity and dry and a classic Sancerre. Contrary to earlier speculation regarding a poor harvest, the fine end to the summer salvaged the crop and thus the predicted shortage did not materialise.

Averting my attention to red wines available, I was delighted to espy a 2013 Sorso Primitivo for just five and a half smackers and, being mindful that sorso means a sip, indulged in a few and noted tobacco and leather coupled with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruits and a spicy bouquet to boot!

It's tantalisingly good, this Italian number and cracking good value! For an extra pound expended , the 2014 Caliente Rojo Tempranillo Campo De Borja, as the name suggests, is both hot and red with a dank , musty aroma , soft and thick in texture with dark fruits in abundance.

Old leather boots, tannin notes and peppery spice are also present with a hint of mocha and the wine improves in the glass and is a possible crowd pleaser!

My final selection was a 2015 Patagonia Argentina Malbec currently reduced to £7.50, a wine made by Bordeaux-born pioneer Hervé J Fabre, the first to make single varietal Argentinian Malbec.

Method

INGREDIENTS • 3⁄4cupwater • 2green tea bags (brew tea the night before to save time in the morning) • 2cupsblueberries, fresh or frozen • 3ice cubes • 12ouncesnon-fat vanilla yogurt • 2tablespoons almonds, whole dry-roasted, unsalted (about 20) • 2tablespoonsflax seeds, ground

elegant, almost Old World style type of Malbec and Argentina's purity of fruit and clear varietal expression shine through in this wine with aromas of black cherry, chocolate and spice leading to dark fruit flavours along with smooth tannins - a true delight - te veo pronto!

1. Bring water to a boil and pour over tea bags.

2. Steep 4 minutes.

3. Squeeze and remove tea bags and discard.

4. Chill tea overnight.

5. If using fresh blueberries, place in freezer overnight.

6. Place tea, blueberries, ice, yogurt, almonds, and flaxseed in blender.

7. Process until smooth.

INGREDIENTS • 60ml olive oil, plus 2 tbsp • 2 large handfuls basil leaves • 2 sea bass fillets (about 140g) • juice ½ lemon • extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

FOR THE RATATOUILLE • • • • •

1 small red pepper 1 small aubergine 2 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp ground cumin 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 8 baby plum tomatoes, halved • pinch of sugar(optional)

Pan-fried sea bass with ratatouille & basil

Method 1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and briefly fry 8 basil leaves just for a moment until they crisp up, then lift out of the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

2. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and get a bowl of iced water ready. Blanch the remaining basil leaves for 5 secs. Using a pair of tongs, lift out the leaves and plunge them into iced water so that they cool quickly and keep their colour.

3. Once cool, lift the leaves out and squeeze to remove any excess water.

4. Add the blanched basil leaves to a food blender and pour in 60ml of olive oil. to a pourable sauce, adding more oil if needed, then put in a bowl and set aside.

5. For the ratatouille, halve the pepper, then deseed and slice into thin strips. Cut the courgette into quarters lengthways and slice. Slice the aubergine into thick rounds, then cut each one

into strips.

6. Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the cumin and garlic, and cook for 30 secs. Tip all the veg into the pan, season and sweat for 1 min. Add 100ml water and cook on a high heat for 4 mins. Adjust the seasoning, adding the sugar if needed.

7. With a sharp knife, score each fish fillet with small slits through the skin at regular intervals.

8. To cook the fish, heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan until hot. Season the fillets and place, skin-side down, in the pan. Cook until the skin is golden and crisp, and the flesh is changing colour.

9. Turn the fillets over and cook for 1 min, remove from the heat, then sprinkle over the lemon juice.

Divide the ratatouille between the plates and top with the sea bass. Drizzle with basil oil, a little extra virgin olive oil and serve with crisp basil leaves.

Balance your diet and your body to boost pregnancy FINDING out you are pregnant can be one of the most exciting times of your life, but it’s not always so easy to fall pregnant, and for some people the harder they try, the more stressful the process becomes.

I have worked with a lot of couples that have successfully increased their fertility simply by changing their diets. The body needs to be in balance to fall pregnant.

It's nature's way of making sure you have the best chance possible of a healthy happy baby, and if the body needs a bit of a ‘clean out’ before it allows you to conceive, then it's worth the effort. Sometimes it just takes as little as one or two months to make this happen and alter the body enough to create that harmony within.

Basically, what the body needs is nutrient dense foods that are packed with lots of nutrition per serving. Including these in your daily regime, and cutting out the rubbish, could potentially make all the difference.

Eggs - contain Vitamin D, B12, protein. Make sure to find eggs which are farm fresh and have deep orange/yellow yolks. They are worth the extra cost as they provide much more nutrients and are cleaner than the general factory farmed egg. Find at farmer’s markets, neighbours or the health food shop.

Nuts and seeds – contain omega 3, zinc, Vitamin E, protein. Eat nuts and seeds in their raw form as essential fatty acids and zinc are sensitive to heat and can be destroyed if cooked. The best seeds and nuts for omega 3 are: walnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Grass-fed meats – contain Omega 3, iron, B12, protein. Grass-fed meats come from animals, which have grazed in grass fields and eaten fresh grass for most of their life. This meat has less fat, and it provides a lot more nutrients because the animals have eaten their natural diet. Grass-fed meats are high in omega 3, have been raised without antibiotics and hormones.

In some people, grains will be a non-issue, but if you have made many changes yet have not seen results, this may be an area for you to look into. Grains and pseudo-grains that are gluten-free (amaranth, rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet) are a great option and tend to be more nutrient dense than the general grains we are used to eating.

Foods to avoid are sugar, soda and pasteurised juices such as bottled apple juice, orange juice, and other bottled fruit juices. They contain concentrated sugar, which can throw off your blood sugar levels and negatively effect your immune system and

hormonal balance. Also avoid any processed/refined and artificial sugars. Some great alternatives are stevia, honey, and maple syrup.

If you are trying to conceive, you may want to cut down or stop your caffeine for a bit as caffeine can affect your hormonal balance, increase your chances of a miscarriage and prevent you from ovulating.

You may want to avoid Soy foods too, as they have been shown to contain oestrogen-mimicking properties. It is best to avoid processed soy foods such as soy-milk, soy burgers, soy protein powder, soy chips, soy meats, and soy cheeses to avoid a negative impact on your hormonal balance. Both men and women are affected by soy.

Community News & Views CYCLE courier Jason Sanger is looking forward to filling in his first tax return in a sign of his new job in Chichester.

Jason was diagnosed with high-functioning autism last August and had struggled to find a position within an organisation that worked for him and the employer.

He began to work with Workaid, a part of the Aldingbourne Trust, which supports adults with learning disabilities to find either paid or voluntary work.

A trust spokeswoman said: "After exploring a number of options, Jason himself came up with the idea of being a Deliveroo cycle courier in Chichester.

"Workaid supported Jason in taking out the relevant personal insurance and registering him as self-employed with HMRC. "They also supported Jason with his initial contact with his Deliveroo rep in Chichester.

"The rest, Jason has done himself, and it would appear that just knowing Workaid's support was there, in the background if he needed it, was enough to give him the confidence to go it alone.

"Since starting delivering with Deliveroo, Jason has reported back that he is loving every minute of being able to work again".

Jason, pictured below, had worked hard at school and college and had gained GCSEs in maths, music, German and humanities. He had also achieved diplomas in performing arts and jazz as well as a GNVQ in leisure and tourism.

He has had a number of paid jobs and currently volunteers at the Mind charity shop in Bognor Regis.

"He was very keen to get some form of paid work, and presented a very refreshing attitude, being willing to try virtually anything," said the spokeswoman.

"When Workaid's employment consultant visited him at the Mind shop, it was apparent that only was he financially better off, but his self-esteem had rocketed too."

MORE than 14,000 votes were cast to elect 30 new members of the West Sussex youth cabinet.

The youth cabinet is a group of young people that covers every constituency seat across the county and represent the young people who live there.

Its members participate in county-wide consultations by presenting the views of young people as well as running their own campaigns. Previous campaigns from the cabinet have been on anti-radicalisation, education and mental health.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm delighted to welcome the new members to the youth cabinet and youth parliament.

"This is a great opportunity for the voices of young people to be heard in politics and I look forward to hearing their views on our services and working with them over the coming months."

The 14,396 votes also led to seven new members of the West Sussex Youth Parliament being chosen.

The young parliamentarians and their deputies will be carrying out the same tasks as the youth cabinet as well as being included in the national programme run by the British Youth Cabinet.

They will also be taking part in their national campaigns. This year's are the call for votes for 16-year-olds and education.

Members of the youth parliament will attend its annual sitting. This is an opportunity for issues in West Sussex to be discussed at a national level. It also decides the future campaigns for its members to take part in.

KEEN cyclists Matthew Graf, 28, and Kirsty Gordon, 26, are aiming to cycle around the world inspired by their nephew.

The partners are around halfway through their globeconquering efforts to raise money for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation.

They have about 12,000 miles of their goal of some 25,000 miles to go as they get into the second half of their year-long deadline.

Matthew, 28, who is a civil engineering apprentice with West Sussex County Council, said: "The reason for the fundraising is simple.

"Our nephew had to undergo a life-changing operation of a liver transplant due to a unique and rare condition.

"Without the specialist help, and warrior spirit of my sister and her boyfriend, the outcome could have been

AN NHS trust which provides mental health care and treatment for people living in the Post Newspapers area is pioneering research into conditions which affect the population.

Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's research activity covers a range of areas. They include obsessive compulsive disorder, distressing voices, dementia, preventing long-term social problems in young people and health interventions for people who gain weight from taking medication.

The MindSHINE study (Mindfulness Self-Help Intervention for NHS Employees) is a good example of the trust's performance in generating research and putting its results into action.

The study has had a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of health service staff.

This work led to the trust winning the 2018 best contribution to non-commercial research award from the National Institute for Health Research clinical research network for Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Dr Kate Jones, the network's chief operating officer, said: "Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has successfully raised the profile of mental health research and consistently leads high quality research, helping CRN Kent, Surrey and Sussex to be one of the highest recruiters in mental health research."

Dr Rick Fraser, the trust's chief medical officer, pictured below third left, collected the award on its behalf. He said: "I am very proud of the fantastic work our research and development team do.

"We need more people to take part in a range of mental health research in areas such as dementia, autism, depression and psychosis."

In addition, Dr Clara Strauss, the research lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre, was also highly commended in the national institute's rising star category.

Network clinical director Professor Geena Menon said: "Clara has shown leadership and invested her time in developing and leading on a personal portfolio of three studies, and mentoring and supporting five other less experienced chief investigators to develop and lead their lead studies for the network.

"She has also developed links with adjacent networks for successful partnership working."

MindSHINE is aimed at tackling the stress and other mental health difficulties that are among the most common reasons for staff sickness absence in the NHS.

A POSSIBLE solution has been suggested to help to attract more GPs to the Arun district.

Littlehampton resident Terry Ellis has called on Arun District Council to use its recently formed Property Investment Fund to buy homes for doctors. The influx of new homes in the council's local plan land use blueprint, which is due to be finalised soon, was the ideal time to make the investment, he said.

"The PIF could ask for some houses and flats to be provided to them, for the specific use of housing doctors new to the area, at a reduced price. The fund would, in turn, rent these properties to new doctors at an advantageous rental.

"The developers would benefit from showing their community spirit and not just building houses and taking the profits. They would still be profiting from the sale of the houses offered. It would PR for them," said Mr Ellis.

The fund's controllers would offer the housing to the surgeries which had applied for them. New doctors who moved into the properties would be asked to commit themselves to stay with the surgery for a specific period in return for a reduced rent.

He said buying the properties would give the council a greater return than leaving the money in its general reserves.

"This money would be a lifesaver for many of the residents of the area, who are suffering from overcrowded surgeries and lack of doctors, causing in some cases waiting times to see the doctors of anything up to 14 days," Mr Ellis added.

A brief history of sea island Selsey - Part one

By Amy Roberts, collections officer and Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum THE NAME Selsey originates from the AngloSaxon Seolesige meaning ‘seal island’.

Archaeological evidence in the area has highlighted activity around the Selsey Peninsula dating to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic eras, with the discovery of a number of different flint implements as well as Neolithic pottery. THis suggests the area was a prime location for early hunter gatherers.

In 1909 the discovery of the remains of a mammoth shocked Selsey residents.

Reports in the Sussex Daily News recorded ‘A discovery of considerable interest and importance was made at Selsey on Tuesday

by James Lawrence, a fisherman, of North Road. At low tide he found opposite to Mr H A Smith’s bungalow, embedded in a mass of red clay, the remains of what was undoubtedly a mammoth, measuring about 30 feet in length’.

THe remains were of a late steppe mammoth,

Mammuthus trogontherii, probably roaming the earth between 243,000 and 191,000 years ago.

THe excavations at Medmerry before the Environment Agency’s managed realignment project uncovered numerous features dating from the Bronze Age. THese suggested an important Bronze Age settlement was located in the area. At the time, the area was a protected lagoon.

Features discovered include three large and two small circular structures, enclosures and field systems, water management features and funerary remains.

A medieval fish weir was also discovered during the fieldwork. THe impressive wooden structure was around 150m long and was designed to funnel and trap fish.

by St Wilfrid. Wilfrid, Bishop of York, having been exiled from his northern see (the bishop’s seat), was welcomed to Sussex by the local king of the South Saxons, and according to Bede was gifted 87 hides of land at ‘Seal Island’ for a monastery.

Following the Norman Conquest, the English church underwent a radical reorganisation and in 1075 the see moved from Selsey to Chichester. Selsey remained in the ownership of the Bishop of Chichester.

However, it never regained its importance as a religious centre and, instead, activity centred on agriculture and fishing.

A survey of the Bishop’s manor completed in 1327 shows that the three field system of cultivation was in use at this time. Under this system, land was divided into three large fields.

One was planted in the autumn with winter wheat or rye; the second field was planted with other crops such as peas, lentils, or beans; and the third was left fallow. THis allowed the soil of that field to regain its lost nutrients.

Selsey Manor, to the north of St Peter’s Church, remained under the ownership of the bishops until, in 1561, Queen Elizabeth forced the bishop at the time, William Barlow, to surrender a number of manors in exchange for various rectories and tithes.

St Wilfrid’s chapel was built at Church Norton in the 13th century. It remained the parish church until the late 19th century. It is believed to be the site of Wilfrid’s original monastery in Selsey, however there is no definitive evidence for this and the location is often deliberated.

In 1864, the nave of the church was demolished and the masonry was reused in the building of a new church, St Peter’s.

As well as this masonry the new church also incorporated the early Norman Purbeck marble font.

For centuries the main occupations in the village were farming, fishing and smuggling.

THe area remained relatively isolated up until the end of the 18th century. THe present day peninsula was in fact an island for a long time, with its own ferry, ferry house and ferryman.

In 1661, it is recorded that the ferryman was paid ‘four bushels of barley’ and was allowed to collect a halfpenny from every traveller.

It wasn’t until 1809 that the causeway was completed, linking Selsey with the mainland.

In 1819, the passing of the Enclosure Act transformed the area surrounding Selsey, permitting the enclosure of the land into large, rectangular fields. Further transformation of the village occurred during the 19th century, when Selsey expanded and developed as a seaside resort.

THis expansion was helped by the opening of the Hundred of Manhood and Selsey Tramway in 1897 which connected Selsey with Chichester. Delays to the service were common, caused by broken down engines, crashes, animals on the line, floods and other weather related issues. THe engines were often second-hand and many were past their best. THe line finally closed in 1935, in part because bus services like Southdown were more reliable.

putting returned cups in the dish washer afterwards. No experience necessary as friendly staff will be on hand to show you what to do.

Local lads Moore and Batchelor ride PostSport to victory at Fontwell's Easter meet SUSSEX favourites Jamie Moore and Mattie Batchelor showed that local knowledge counts as they rode winners at Fontwell's popular Easter Eggstravaganza Raceday, writes Nic O'Leary.

Nearly 50 horses went to post during a seven-race meeting as a dry and bright Fontwell Park Racecourse hosted the National Hunt meet.

The feature race was the Geoff Smith 65th Birthday Handicap Steeple Chase, contested by five class 4 horses, over a distance of three miles, about two furlongs.

Thanks to a couple of dry days leading up to the meeting, the going on the day was officially soft, heavy in places.

Besides racing, there was plenty to do for all the family, including 300 Easter eggs hidden around the racecourse, for children to find.

A large crowd gathered in the stands ahead of the first race of the day, The Kids Love Days Out @Butlins Bognor Regis Handicap Hurdle Race, which saw 11 Class 5 horses go to post.

Michael Legg, on board Hollywood Ken, let his horse kick on for home with two to go.

Despite pulling right on the run in, the 20/1 shot went on to win by 12 lengths.

Next up was the feature race of the day, which proved to be a cracker. After making much of the early running, Colin Tizzard’s 3/1 favourite, Wizards Bridge, held on to beat Leo Luna, under Moore, into second.

The Sussex jockey made amends in the third race over two miles three furlongs, defying a weight penalty to guide his mount Larry round beautifully to beat favourite Duke Of Kilcorral by two lengths.

Just three horses took part in the fourth, and 10/11 favourite Clondaw Westie pulled well clear on the bit, to cruise to a 26-length victory for Oxfordshire trainer, Lawney Hill.

In the fifth, the Visit Star Sports In Mayfair, London Handicap Hurdle Race, eleven Class four horses went to post. Norman The Red finished strongest, landing the spoils for Brighton trainer John E Long and jockey Mattie Batchelor.

The even-money favourite, Burgess Dream, took the sixth before Neil Mulholland and Noel Fehily extended their leads at the top of the jockeys’ and trainers’ standings this season as Dandolo Du Gite won.

The next family meeting at Fontwell Park takes place on May 27.

DARTS: Trish Kidd showed that she is unbeatable when it comes to the Double In Double Out Ladies Knockouts after winning the title for the third year running.

The Cabin Cruisers player whitewashed Rhonda West (Newtown Raiders) to ensure she remains the only person ever to win the crown.

Kidd, pictured below left, started as she meant to go on, hitting an 108 in-shot and did not let up before taking the first leg. The second leg saw a better game from West with scores of 85 & 80, but Kidd started with 88 and also scored a ton. With 107 left, Kidd hit the treble 19, then the single 18, and double 16 for the ton plus out-shot.

Bognor darts ace is set to face the best

BOGNOR darts ace Joe Osman has his eyes on the prize of a career in the sport after being invited to play against some of the world's best budding players.

The 23-year-old has been honing his skills on oches around the town since the age of seven.

After winning a series of youth matches at county and national level, he has achieved a ranking in the top 256 of the world.

This has led to an invitation to play on the Professional Darts Cooperation (PDC) Development Tour this year against the world's best 16 to 23-year-olds.

It is a massive achievement for a young man from Bognor Regis who still continues to develop his game twice a week at Legends Sports Bar on the town's pier.

Speaking ahead of the first of four PDC tour events, which is in Wigan this weekend, Joe said: "To be invited to play

on the Professional Darts Cooperation Development Tour is a massive honour and is something I'm looking forward to.

"To be classed in the top 256 of the world is a fantastic achievement and something which I am proud of."

Joe started playing darts aged seven when his mum and dad got him his first dartboard.

He hit his first 180 soon after.

Joe said: "My Auntie Carole and Uncle Garry would often come round and play against me. They noticed my talents and I joined their dart team when I was 11.

"Once I proved my ability locally I got asked to join the Sussex County Youth team where I finished highest out of the age group of Sussex Players in my first year.

"As the years went on I was invited to represent England at a soft tip tournament in Holland in April 2014 as well as in France in 2015."

On the same night at Newtown Social Club was the Captains & Secretaries knockout. Played in a world cup format, the captains played each other, then the secretaries. If equal, a sudden death one leg pairs game decided the winner.

Wadsworth started the captain's game strongly, hitting two tons on his way to taking the first leg. Both players split the next two legs, but the QE2 man pushed on in the fourth to take the match 3-1.

His partner Danahar proved even more ruthless in the secretaries' match, winning it 3-0 to seal the title for the QE2 pair.

CROSS COUNTRY: In the final national cross-country event of the season, local students played a major part in giving Sussex sealing a seventh place finish overall to cap an excellent all-round team performances.

There were two team medals for Sussex, one of which was in the senior boys' race. Will Broom (Bishop Luffa) ran the race of his life to lead the county home in a superb 20th place, the second best placing of any Sussex athlete on the day.

He was followed by another four team members in the top 80, one of whom was fellow schoolmate Leo Stallard, which sealed a team bronze medal.

There was another Chichester athlete leading Sussex home in the seniors’ girls race, with Imogen Matthews storming through the field to finish 68th.

In the intermediate girls' race, Olivia Macdonald (Seaford College - 28th) and Olivia Wiseman (Bishop Luffa - 31st) spearheaded a great team performance to finish in third to take another bronze.

In the intermediate boys' race, Ned Potter continued his fine form with a 59th place, while Liam Dunne, another Chichester based athlete, finished 127th to be the third home for the county.

Leaders next for Pagham PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds says the pressure is off his young side as the Lions remain in the hunt for the SCFL Premier title.

Two wins in the past week have kept the Nyetimber Lane side in second place, just one point off top spot.

Next up for Pagham is a mouthwatering clash away at leaders Haywards Heath tomorrow (3pm).

Win that - and the Lions will be in the driving seat with just four matches of the league season to go.

But Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said he believed his side were only focused on the next game.

He said: "Not many people were picking us to be one of the sides in the hunt at the start of the season so to be in the promotion places going into the last month of the season is testament to how hard everyone's worked.

"We'll just keep going about our business in the same way as we have done all season and see where it takes us.

"We've not lost in the league since December and, if we continue to do the things that have given us success in that

time, we'll certainly be there or thereabouts."

Pagham go into the tabletopping clash after seeing off one of their rivals in the past week.

In front of a crowd of more than 100, the Lions produced an inspired display to beat fifth-placed Saltdean United 3-0.

Daniel Simmonds was the match winner hitting two with James Thurgar hitting home the third with half-hour still to play.

The brace from Simmonds meant he crossed the 50 goal mark for the season.

He then followed that up with a hat-trick on Tuesday as the Lions beat Broadbridge Heath 4-0 on Tuesday.

Thurgar scored the other goal making it three in three for him.

The match was marred by three red cards after a first-half fracas, including a dismissal for Pagham's defender Ryan Davidson, who will now miss some of the run in.

Pagham go into the Heath match on a roll and are now undefeated in 17 in the league.

The Lions won the return fixture in December 3-0, with Simmonds scoring a hat-trick.

CHICHESTER City will be looking to revive their fading promotion hopes with two home matches in four days giving them the chance to bag a crucial six points.

After being in contention for much of the season at the top of the SCFL Premier, Miles Rutherford's side are in danger of being pipped at the post.

But, with two home matches in the next week, Chi have the perfect opportunity to get back in the hunt.

First up tomorrow is a visit from relegationthreatened Hassocks (3pm), a side who City have already beaten 4-0 away this term.

Then on Tuesday all eyes will be on Oaklands Park as Chi host third-placed Three Bridges (7.45pm). The Crawley-based side have won their past six on the trot and, with games in hand, are the favourites for a swift return to Isthmian South.

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce is hoping his side can switch their sights on to winning some silverware after a crucial loss hit their promotion hopes.

Officials at the Recreation Ground have been working hard all season to ready The Sids for a return to senior football.

But a 3-0 home defeat against Alfold last weekend means Pearce's side are sixth in SCFL Division Two. A 3-0 win against Clymping on Tuesday restored some confidence, with Jake Goulding (2) and Dan Bassil scoring the goals.

But, even with games in hand, the eight point

gap to league leaders Rustington looks too big to close with just six matches to play.

Three points against fourth-place Westfield at home tomorrow (3pm) will help their cause. But Sids hopes now are firmly focused on retaining the league cup - with Thursday's semi-final at Pagham's Nyetimber Lane pitching them against leaders Rustington (7.30pm).

Pearce said: "Obviously we want to retain the Division Two cup but the semi will not be easy. The nice thing will be playing on a decent surface at Pagham which will be good for the lads. They do the hard work the rest of the

As for promotion, Pearce said everything is in place - providing they can get the results.

He said: "It depends on the FA restructuring.

The ground is passed for step six, everything is in place so it is over to the FA and the powers that be. We are aiming for the top two and there are not many other clubs ready to go up. As a club, we always want to progress and that's why everyone is involved."

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham are up to fifth after a 6-0 victory over Clymping made it sevens wins on the bounce.

Next up for the Robins is a trip to secondplaced Roffey tomorrow (3pm) before a league cup semi-final against Cowfold on Tuesday (7.30pm) at Steyning's Shooting Field ground.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's poor form continues after two defeats in the past week.

Steve Bailey's side are now without a win in seven matches after drawing 1-1 at St Francis Rangers - Frazer Smith scoring - before losing 2-0 at Storrington in midweek.

Next for the ninth-place Blues is a home match against St Francis tomorrow (2pm) before a trip to Midhurst on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, after three weeks off, Chichester Ladies will return to action in the FA Women's Premier League South on Sunday, making the trip to play Coventry City (2pm).

Matt Wright's side are seventh in the 12-team division and have all but secured their status in the third tier for another season.

Final home match hopes for Blues CHICHESTER RFC are aiming to finish their season on a high by putting on a show in front of their home fans.

Scott Ashley's side welcome Old Colfeians to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) with fourth spot in London One South all but sealed.

With the visitors sitting third bottom, Chi's faithful will be hopeful of a convincing display which will send them off into the summer full of hope for the next campaign.

Blues certainly go into the match with momentum after a 58-5 win on the road at Maidstone last weekend.

A fine attacking display against a side already relegated saw Chi rack up their second ten-try display of the campaign, with

scrum half Harry Seaman scoring a hat-trick.

In further good news for all at Oaklands, youngsters Josh Goodwin and George Cook both made appearances as England U18 beat Ireland U18 15-13 in a tight match. *Bognor RFC round off their season tomorrow with a trip to Overton (3pm) and an outside shot of becoming champions.

The Purple and Greens sealed second spot in Hampshire One with a convincing 1130 victory over Isle of Wight at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Bognor are just five points behind league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

But the league leaders play struggling Ellingham and should have plenty of chances to seal the one point needed to win the title.

Relegation-bound Bognor want to avoid a rock bottom finish Next Game

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says the aim is for the Rocks to avoid finishing rock bottom in the National South.

With five games still to go and 13 points separating them from safety, the Nyewood Lane outfit are all but set for a swift return to step three.

A 3-2 defeat away at Goucester City on Saturday near enough confirmed relegation for the Rocks.

But there was some cheer when home fans were treated to just the second win at home in the league since August when goals from Ibra Sekajja and Tommy Scutt sealed a 2-1 win against play off-chasing St Albans City.

Those three points also lifted Bognor off the bottom. With a home match against Hemel Hempstead tomorrow (3pm) followed by a trip to fellow strugglers Concord Rangers on Tuesday (7.45pm), Pearce has now tasked his players with making sure the Rocks do not fill 24th spot come the end of April.

He said: "We have a very loyal bunch of supporters and we have a duty to give them the best we can every week.

"We will continue to gain as many points as we can and the challenge is not to come bottom of the league. If we come any higher than that, we will be very pleased."

As with much of the rest of the season, it could very easily have been different week for the Rocks if things had gone their way.

A poor first 85 minutes at Gloucester saw Bognor slip to 3-0 down. Late goals from Sekajja and Keaton Wood reduced the deficit and Rocks almost escaped with a draw through Sami El-Abd. On Tuesday, an excellent first half display put Bognor two up through Sekajja and Scutt.

In the second period, Saints were much better and in injury time Harvey Bradbury, son of Havant & Waterlooville boss Lee, got one back for the visitors.

Then the Hertfordshire side were awarded a contested penalty for an apparent off-the-ball foul by Rocks' keeper Dan Lincoln.

Skipper El-Abd was sent off in the aftermath.

But Lincoln made amends, saving the penalty and sealing the first win in seven for Pearce's side.

The drama did not stop then as players and officials from both teams clashed on the final whistle.

Pearce said: "Like most games this year, the match against Gloucester could have gone either way if our final pass into the box or final touch was better.

"Against St Albans we got them right. It could have been four by half time with a bit more care.

"The win gives the players confidence but they are hard games. Hemel will be a tough match. The dividing line between success and defeat in this league is very slim."

'Rebuilding work is underway' THERE may be a month of the season still to play. But rebuilding for Rocks starts here and now.

With 15 points still up for grabs and 13 points between them and safety, Bognor boss Jack Pearce admits that even with five game still to go, thoughts now must turn to succeeding in the Isthmian Premier.

Two players have already left Nyewood Lane, with Kristian Campbell and Manny Adebowale returning to their parent clubs Bromley and Dover respectively.

Pearce says neither are likely to play in a Rocks shirt next season when Bognor return to the third tier. But he will start sounding out other squad members in the coming days about signing on for the new campaign.

With many clubs struggling after relegation, the veteran boss knows his side need to hit the ground running.

Pearce said: "We will be talking to them [the players] in the next week and asking them their plans. A few will say yes, a few will say not sure, and a few will say no - that's the way it always will be.

"We will try and do it now to get things sorted but most of the players will take until the end of the season before making a decision."

It’s always nice to get back to winning ways like we did against St Albans City.

I don’t think I have seen a much better first half performance from the team all season.

We scored first for once on eight minutes with a neat finish by Ibra Sekajja and then Tommy Scutt netted his first goal of his career for Bognor (apart from THAT headed own goal against Wealdstone) to give us a two-goal lead.

I looked over to Richard Essen on the tannoy and we couldn’t believe we were seeing the same team.

As we've come to expect from the Rocks though this eason, things are never easy and it did get a little squeaky bum time towards the end of the match.

St Albans got a goal, then were awarded a penalty, leading to another red card for Sami El-Abd. At 2-1 at this point it looked like the Saints would steal a draw but Dan Lincoln came to the rescue again with a fine save from the spot.

The referee blew the whistle straight after to give Bognor the double over the Saints.

What followed was not acceptable. It was horrific after the final whistle with stewards getting harmed by visiting players and management on the bench.

This was a crucial win for Bognor. Who would have thought that St Albans were that high in the league?

I am afraid their management team failed to set a good example all game.

However, with Concord Rangers, Poole Town and Whitehawk all losing recently it helped us to reduce the gap at the bottom.

The gap of 13 points is exactly the same as it was a fortnight ago before Easter.

Our home game against Chelmsford City on Good Friday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

As soon as I had arrived at

around 1.20pm, I could see the pitch wasn’t going to see any play. The referee took good time before finally calling the game off shortly after 2pm. It didn’t stop raining that day!

The Eastbourne Borough game away on Easter Monday wasn’t much better as we lost that 3-0.

Tensions again flared at the handshake between first team coach Dabba and former boss Jamie Howell. They worked closely together over a number of years, so it was a surprise to see them being pulled apart after the final whistle.

I sat next to a nice Sports fan at the match and he had been following them for eight years.

He told me all about the set up at Eastbourne and I agreed they had everything in place to progress.

I advised they needed to give Jamie a proper chance as he will need time to develop a team. He did really well for us over the years but we shall see if Borough give him an extended run as boss.

That defeat against our Sussex rivals did set us back in the bid to escape the drop so it was no surprise that just a few dozen of us made the trip out west for the Gloucester City match.

We deserved a draw in the match at Evesham this past week as well. But for me we didn’t start performing until the final 5 minutes and by then it was too late!

Lee Roberts and I on the Rocks Radio commentary didn’t see that late drama coming.

by Sami that was denied by a reaction save right at the death had us all on the edge of our seats. It's never dull following this team is it?
