Cycling ban proposed in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PERMISSION has been granted by West Sussex County Council to advertise a proposed traffic order, to extend the prohibition of cycling within the pedestrian precinct in Chichester city centre.

ChiCycle are proposing a more sensitive approach involving the use of a sign "Share with Care".

Sarah Sharp, co-ordinator of ChiCycle, Chichester's cycle campaign said: "THe use of a sign would be a more sensible approach to enable people still to use

the streets as long as they slow down and share the space with due consideration of pedestrians.

"It makes sense to dismount when the streets are full of people but banning cycling at times when there is really no need causes ill feeling.

"In my view, this cycling ban is not properly thought through and comes at a time when we need to invest properly in our cycling infrastructure, not make

it harder for people to get about by bike.

"It shows how out of touch the council is with the needs of real people who want to get about safely on their bikes.

"A more innovative approach should be taken instead of applying weekday rules to Sundays. Money should be invested where the risk to life is greatest - how many of our dangerous junctions have had real safety measures introduced?

Stepping along to Munich for charity

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk EMPLOYEES at a sports marketing agency in the Witterings have travelled millions of steps to raise money for charity.

Staff at Brandwave in the Witterings supported Sport Relief 2018 with their #Chi2Munich challenge, travelling the equivalent distance from their head office in Chichester to their offices in Munich, Germany, and back again.

THe distance equated to 1,880 km, which works out at 2,467,190 steps. THe team attempted to reach this distance within the seven days of Sport Relief.

THe 22-strong team taking part managed to reach this target and surpass it, covering a total of 2,071km, which equated to 2,717,847 steps.

THrough this, Brandwave managed to raise a grand total of £2,573 for Sports Relief.

Natasha Clarke, account director at Brandwave, said: “At the beginning of the week, it really was touch and go. We were concerned at points, especially with all the snow. We were asking ourselves is this realistic? Will we make it to our target distance in seven days? But, the whole team really got behind the cause.”

In line with Sport Relief’s Whatever Moves You campaign, Brandwave's team have been taking part in activities to reach the 1,880 km distance including running, cycling, swimming, skiing, paddle boarding, playing football, tennis, and netball before and after work and during lunch hours.

On the opening weekend of Sport Relief, despite the challenging weather conditions brought by the ‘Beast from the East’, different members of the team cycled through the South Downs and took part in Chichester’s parkrun.

STAFF at a dentist in Chichester are celebrating the win of an award for the second year running.

Centre for Dentistry at Sainsbury’s on Westhampnett Road, has been recognised with the award based on patient service excellence ratings from a healthcare search engine.

WhatClinic looked at 12 months of data from users of its site, in relation to Centre for Dentistry, including patient review scores, feedback data and clinic contact rates.

Centre for Dentistry was one of only a small number of clinics on the site that met the exacting standards needed to qualify for the award. Not only must the clinic have a consistently

high ServiceScore rating to qualify, the rating measures the clinic’s commitment to customer service over a whole year, and so represents long-term commitment dealing with patients.

Fewer than two per cent of clinics on the site qualified for the award this year.

Lisa Riley, Centre for Dentistry chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be recognised for our continued commitment to customer service by receiving this award again this year.

Packed house hears speakers in fine voice Changes in times for city cyclists f John McHugo was a guest at the Speaker Festival

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE ASSEMBLY Rooms in Chichester were full on Friday and Saturday with people gathering for the city's Speaker Festival 2018.

Among the guests on Saturday, John McHugo made an appearance revealing in this talk how the great divide in Islam occurred.

Charting the story of Islam from the death of the Prophet Muhammad to the present day, he described the conflicts that raged over the succession to the Prophet, how Sunnism and Shi'ism evolved as different sects during the

Abbasid caliphate, and how the rivalry between the empires of the Sunni Ottomans and Shi'i Safavids contrived to ensure that the split would continue into modern times.

John McHugo is an international lawyer and Arabic linguist, with over 40 years’ experience of the region.

He has worked as a lawyer in several Arab countries, notably Egypt, Bahrain and Oman, and is a board member of the Council for Arab British Understanding and of the British Egyptian Society.

Following on from John McHugo, guests were fortunate to hear from Damien Lewis.

His book, SAS Ghost Patrol, is the explosive true story of the day in 1942

when the SAS donned Nazi uniforms to perpetrate the most audacious and daring mission of the war which became a foundation stone of Special Forces legend.

Damien Lewis is a former war reporter and one of the nation's "20 favourite authors" according to World Book Day. Organiser Marc Rattray said: "THe events went really well with perhaps the highlights being Andrew Monaghan’s talk about the power structures in the Kremlin and Simon Heffer’s history of Britain from 1880 until 1914.

"THe Chichester Speakers Festival is a growing event in the calendar of Chichester and we much look forward to welcoming customers back to our doors in the autumn of 2018."

"Cycling needs proper investment to enable new routes to be established.

For example, safe, segregated routes from the Witterings, Emsworth, Tangmere and Selsey into the city with protected cycle lanes on the busy roads.

"Unless we invest properly in cycling and walking infrastructure, people have no choice but to drive the relatively short distances (e.g. seven miles from the Witterings).

"With electric bikes, such short distances could be real opportunities to get fit and reduce congestion, pollution and save money."

Cyclists from ChiCyle gathered on Sunday at 4.30pm for a fun cycle ride around East Street and North Street to draw attention to the consultation to ban cycling on the city streets on Sundays to fit in with the same shop opening hours in the week.

Keen cyclist, Carley Sitwell from Chichester said: "I have arthritis in my ankle and I can't walk distances.

Cycling is my lifeline.

"I have lived here for over 30 years and I always cycle. I never bring my car into town. We all have to live together and be sensible. THe previous times cyclists could use the town on a Sunday is reasonable."

Jonathan Fulford, from Bosham, was also at Sunday's cycle ride.

He said: "I commute to Chichester every day by bike. I don't know why they are trying to change the times on Sunday. It is a nice tradition of Chichester on a more relaxed day of shopping.

"Sunday should be a different day, there are more people cycling socially on a Sunday. It should be more relaxed."

` Recognition for city school for 2017 excellent results A SECONDARY school in Chichester has been recognised nationally for its excellent results in 2017.

Bishop Luffa was found to be among the best performing secondary schools in the country, receiving an award for being in the top 10 per cent of non-selective schools nationally for attainment.

THe results are based on data from the Department of Education and Ofsted, analysed by the Schools, Students and Teachers network (SSAT).

THe SSAT educational outcomes database compares all state-funded schools in England, with the highest performing for a range of key measures presented with SSAT educational outcomes awards, sponsored by Lexonik.

Bishop Luffa will be presented with their award in the summer term at a ceremony attended by winners from across the region.

Sue Williamson, chief executive of SSAT, said: “I am delighted that Bishop Luffa has won an educational outcomes award.

"THis recognises an important aspect of the schools’ work, but, as we know, there is much more to recognise in a good school like Bishop Luffa.

New vehicle to aid Manhood services

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW purpose-built wheelchair access vehicle has been purchased by Manhood Mobility Service.

THe F.G.Woodger Trust has recently sponsored the Manhood Mobility Service (MMS), based in the Witterings Medical Centre, in order for them to purchase the new vehicle.

Rosamund Champ, from the F.G. Woodger Trust, handed over the keys for the new wheelchair access vehicle to Michael Groves, a driver with MMS. THe new car provides a much improved loading and journey experience for Manhood Mobility’s wheelchair-bound members as well as being easier for the drivers to operate.

MMS is a group of local volunteers who

give their time and use of their cars to help those in the community who have transport needs which cannot be met by public transport. THe group offers a door to door service for essential journeys to hospital, the medical centre, dentists, opticians and other medical needs.

MMS manager Justin Birt said: "You must become a member of Manhood Mobility to use our services and we offer life membership for £20.

"We are continually in need of extra volunteer drivers and office staff. Our office staff are unpaid volunteers. Our drivers are paid a mileage allowance to cover fuel and running costs.

"All the members and volunteers at MMS are extremely grateful to the F.G. Woodger Trust for their continued support."

It's best in snow at Goodwood's 76th annual members' meeting SNOWFLAKES fell across the Goodwood Motor Circuit on March 17 and 18 as more than 30,000 Goodwood Road Racing Club members, fellowship subscribers and their friends and families braved the icy temperatures to watch classic racing at its very best.

THe vast majority of competitors adorned their racing cars and crash helmets with #Fever stickers and, across the paddocks, wherever you looked, there were appreciations of inimitable commentary maestro Henry Hope-Frost, who recently passed away.

A wide range of delights in the form of the Taste of Goodwood pop-up from the team at Goodwood’s own Farmer,

Butcher, Chef restaurant, offering cookery demonstrations, gin tasting and a selection of the best produce direct from the Home Farm.

Members were hard at work, earning points for their respective houses. From axe throwing to flower arranging and ferret racing to 4x4 ‘football’, Anthony Reid’s Methuen house reclaimed the House Shield, winning for the fourth time in five years.

While conditions were unfortunately too risky for the Hailwood Trophy riders to take to the track, the weather didn’t deter the four-wheel competitors, who gave the members’ meeting spectators some excellent on-track action.

City chocolatiers celebrate anniversary with new range

Montezuma's has created the Festival range - a limited edition collection of chocolate bars and spiced caramels inspired by the spring festival of Holi.

THe launch of the range is the first of a number of exciting events the company is planning to mark its milestone birthday.

Montezuma's was established in August, 2000, by Helen and Simon Pattinson and has grown from one small shop to a hugely successful and well regarded British business.

Helen Pattinson, Montezuma's cofounder, said: "I can't believe it's been 18 years since Simon and I set up the business following our life-changing trip to South America.

"We've loved developing our chocolate ranges over the years, and taking inspiration from different flavour combinations, ingredients and cultures.

"In fact, the festival concept for our new product range was inspired by Holi, the Hindu festival which signifies the arrival of spring and has become known as the happiest festival on earth.

` Missing teenager POLICE are concerned for the welfare of missing teenager Demi Marsh, from Tangmere, near Chichester.

Demi, 13, was last seen on Monday,. March 26, in the morning, getting on a train at Chichester railway station, destined for Portsmouth.

It is believed Demi may have travelled to the Isle of Wight.

She is white, 5ft 4in and with long, straight brown hair. Demi was last seen wearing black Nike trainers, black jeans, a red cropped top and a navy blue jacket.

PC Kala Notton, of the missing persons team, said: “We are urging train passengers on the trains yesterday to cast their minds back to see if they remember seeing Demi. Anyone with information or who sees Demi should call us immediately.”

Hello Everyone my name is Nickie Pettitt and Gaston’s Home Help is a local business I have created since the sad loss of my father in September 2017 when my world changed dramatically. I received a call from my dad in August 2016 telling me he had the awful news that he had terminal cancer, he lived 40 miles away in Southampton and was a fit man who went to the gym weekly and travelled to and from Yorkshire to visit family so the diagnosis came as a complete shock to us all. He was 76 years old, lived alone and was very self- sufficient, he slowly declined over the months with chemotherapy and medication and became more dependent on me for help, he eventually could not drive, be able to go up or down stairs or cook for himself, he was not eligible for a care home & could neither afford one so as his daughter I wanted to do all I could for him. Together we would do his food shopping with both of us arm in arm walking to the shops just to try and build some muscle to help him. I was very fortunate to be able to reduce my work hours to be able to be there for my dad and travel the 40 miles each way daily as well as having to juggle between my own young family and although you hear heartbreaking stories about other people in the same situation it does not really hit home until you find yourself in exactly the same situation with a parent you love with all your heart and would do anything for. He had carer’s that would visit daily to administer medication but their time was limited to 10 minute’s which resulted in no time to make him a meal or even to sit with him while he ate.

When dad became extremely unwell I managed to transfer him from out of area to St Wilfrids Hospice and then found him a great nursing home where he spent his last days. It was not until afterwards that I realised as a daughter that not everyone has the level of support that I lovingly and willingly gave to my dad. I would like to use my own personal experience and knowledge I have gained to help others in similar situations, whether it is giving a helping hand around the home to do some light cleaning, laundry,shopping or some companionship- perhaps a gentle walk, a trip to the beach or a lunch our somewhere. I can also help with arranging and assisting to doctors appointments. You may know someone who is vulnerable and does not realise that this sort of help is available to them but they may feel to proud or just don’t have anyone they can confide in.

Hospice gets cracking gift AN AUXILIARY nurse at Chichester’s hospice has made a special delivery to the fundraising department.

Caroline Martin, who has worked at St Wilfrid’s Hospice for six years, was surprised when her mother, Ruth Jordan, told her about her donation.

Mrs Jordan, a resident of Bognor for around 40 years, now lives in Kent had heard about the fundraising team's call for help for Creme Eggs.

She said: "I donated a box of 48 eggs because there was an appeal on the hospice Facebook page for them.

"I know that they have a lot of knitted chicks donated leading up to Easter each year and they like to have the Creme Eggs to put under the chicks.

"I’m not a very good knitter, so it made sense to me to do my bit by donating a box of eggs for them to use.

Flying a flag high for city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A UNION flag is being raised by the Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) team alongside the flag of St George.

THe start of a national flag programme next month is designed to welcome shoppers, tourists and visitors to the historic city.

On April 23, the flag of St George will fly in Chichester city centre, celebrating England’s national day. THis will signify the start of the BID’s flag programme to inspire unity and pride.

Roman flags will then be raised midMay in celebration of Roman Week, which this year will take place from May 28 to June 2, in celebration of Chichester’s vast Roman heritage.

THe Roman legacy can be found across

the city, including magnificent features such as the Roman walls surrounding the city and the Roman bath house located in THe Novium Museum. THe Roman flags represent the Second Augustan Roman Legion that was based in Chichester in AD43.

From mid-September, the city will mark the milestone of 100 years since the end of the First World War. Commemorative flags will fly up until mid-November in memory of the brave soldiers who fought in this historic war.

Jeanette Hockley, Chichester BID team services manager, said: “Launching the flags in support of St George’s Day gives us an opportunity to represent the sense of pride and unity we have as a nation over the coming weeks.

“Not only do our businesses like the visual impact of these flags but they help add a celebratory element to the wonderful city we live, shop and work in."

Film facts from expert Neil

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS, teachers and members of the public were treated to a special talk on Monday evening.

English film director, editor and screenwriter, Neil Marshall, was at the University of Chichester in conversation with Dr Adam Locks, programme coordinator for film and television studies.

Neil was born in 1970 in Newcastle upon Tyne and is best known for Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday.

He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series for episode, The Watchers on the Wall, from the popular TV series, Game of Thrones.

Neil talked about his love of film from an early age, which influenced him to refrain from following in his father's footsteps in a military career.

He said: "My granddad was in the army and fought in the Battle of the Somme and my dad was also in the army. THis was a time with all the troubles in Ireland and my dad said he didn't want me to join the army and break my legs!

"Both my parents are big movie fans and as long as I can remember I was watching movies on TV. "One of my earliest memories is my dad waking me up at what felt like the middle of the night, and telling me to come and watch something on TV. It was the Bride of Frankenstein. I must have been about six and I was hooked."

Talking about how he came to work on the hit television show, Game of Thrones, Neil claims it was pure chance.

He said: "THe stunt co-ordinator and horse master from Centurion both went on to work on Game of Thrones. At some point I contacted HBO and said I would like to work on the show but at that point they had their own directors and I had no chance.

"During season two, the episode, The Battle of Blackwater, was going to be their biggest episode yet. A week before

they started filming, the director had to drop out and I got a phone call from the producer saying the horse master and stunt co-ordinator told him to give me a call."

After the talk, Neil spoke exclusively to The Chichester Post about the writing process he has.

He said: "When I'm writing the script for a film, I am constantly figuring out

how I am going to shoot it. I shoot it in my head as I am writing it, so by the time you come to make it, you've already shot it about 50 times.

"I think it's very important to do these sorts of talks like this one today and it's an honour to be asked to be here. Two of my very close friends work here at the University of Chichester so I was invited along. It's a pleasure to be here."

Swiss artist brings his work to the city's sculpture park

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk LEADING Swiss artist, Olaf Breuning has brought his work to the Cass Sculpture Foundation at Goodwood.

Olaf Breuning will turn the main gallery of CASS Sculpture Foundation into a temporary carpenter’s studio.

Working with a mountain of discarded, salvaged and recycled wood from the local area in West Sussex, Breuning will create a series of large Scrap Faces.

With typical spontaneous rigour Breuning will work on site over the Easter weekend to construct his free-standing Scrap Faces, encouraging surreal characters to appear in the makeshift wooden patchwork compositions.

Visitors will gain unique insight into the artist’s practice – observing how ideas are created, refined or abandoned in the pursuit of bringing physicality to otherwise intangible ideas.

Olaf has been sculptutor for around 20 years. Hesaid: "I don't think it's ever about getting better, it's about continuing

to do it. I look at my monograph for the last 15 years in my books and I feel happy.

I don't hope to get better, I hope I am already good!

"I have shows all over the world and I think it's always exciting. Here, especially, I'm really happy because I moved my studio two years ago into the forest from New York City and I happy to be back in the forest here. I feel at home here.

"It's important for me, as an artist, to think. I think about life and the big questions in life. It helped me a lot to move to the countryside and to have more time to think.

"THe Scrap Faces are a little bit like my Instagram account. For maybe about five years I have only done faces on my account using food.

"I'm not the first person to see faces in things, that's not original, but I had some boards in my studio which were like a canvas for painting. I stared at the boards and put some scrap wood on them and they made faces."

Olaf said this is the first place in the world that will see his creations. "It might be the first and the last place! It might be

the first of many. It's spontaneous but it is also a bit risky."

Olaf Breuning was born in 1970 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and currently lives and works in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Chisenhale Gallery,London; Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany; Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway; and the Paul Klee Museum, Bern.

Also soon to be on show and standing at over ten metres tall, Olaf Breuning’s Clouds will compete with the towering treescape of CASS Sculpture Foundation.

Held in place by rudimentary steel supports, the six cartoonish clouds are cut from polished aluminium and powder-coated in different hues of bright blue.

Clouds is a permanent realisation of an earlier work in which Breuning used lifting cranes and boom lifts to elevate large blue cut-out drawings of clouds into the air for a momentary staged

photograph.

THeir whimsical bulbous shapes and blue finishes are reminiscent of a child’s rendering of the sky or the set of a primary school play.

Helen Turner, curator from CASS Sculpture Foundation, said: "We are thrilled to have artist Olaf Breuning on site over Easter weekend to create his new installation ‘Scrap Faces’.

"Created specifically for the main gallery at CASS visitors will gain unique access to the working process of this witty and ambitious artist.

"We are also delighted to present Breuning's monumental outdoor work Clouds at CASS. Previously on display in Central Park, NYC, this work will make a colourful and uplifting contribution to our wonderful outdoor collection of sculptures."

I WAS shocked to read a report that only 4% of landlords and tenants are aware of the new Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards being introduced to the rental market. Put simply, while every rental property needed an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as of October 2008, from April 1, 2018, any property with a rating lower than an ‘E’ cannot be let out! Existing tenancies will need to abide by this from April, 2020, too, although some exemptions do apply.

Considering last year there was believed to be 64,092 new tenancies created at properties with an energy rating below an E, there are a large number of landlords who will soon be open to a fine of £4,000.

You can look up Energy Performance Certificates on the EPC register - epcregister.com free of charge. THe property will be given an energy efficiency rating from A (highest) to G (lowest). EPCs are valid for ten years, so I’d advise landlords to check each rental property has one that’s in-date, has at least an E rating and that the document is given to tenants before they move-in (not doing so prevents you from regaining automatic possession of your property).

For those with properties that fall just short of the necessary rating, it may help to know that the parameters of the rating system have changed recently. I recently advised a new landlord of mine whose property had an EPC with an F rating from 2014 to get it reassessed, which resulted in a newly updated D rating; making it legal and ready to rent with the minimum fuss, effort and cost to the landlord.

I believe it’s likely that the energy efficiency rules will get more stringent in the future though.

While an E rating may be okay now, I suspect calls for further environmental improvements will see the minimum rating increase in years to come.

` School success PUPILS at Oakwood School are celebrating after they have been awarded places at their chosen senior school.

THe Year 6 pupils gained the places following their outstanding exam results.

Award for acts of kindness

As reported in the Chichester Post, Phoebe Ockenden received the Young Citizen's Award at the Chichester City Council Awards for her work with homeless people.

Phoebe was introduced by Cllr Trevor Tupper on THursday, March 8, at the award ceremony. He said: "Phoebe has done an amazing job with her age and disability.

She is a great asset and an outstanding person to receive the nomination and well deserved winner of the award."

Mayor Cllr Peter Evans said: "It was a pleasure to present Phoebe with her award.

Phoebe has overcome many obstacles with the aid of her mother to help other people who are less fortunate than herself in being homeless in our city.

"Phoebe has shown that young people do care about their city and all people that live within it, it is especially poignant that Phoebe has overcome her own disabilities to help others."

Phoebe, aged 13, was born with a benign hydrocephalus which left behind learning disabilities. Her mum, Donna started the homeless project informally in 2016, when they moved into the centre of Chichester and realised for the first time there was a homeless problem.

She said: "I used to walk past people in sleeping bags on my way home from the station and felt that as they were my neighbours, (living close to me) I should do something to help."

THroughout 2016 Phoebe, her sister, Caiti, and Donna would take out extra

food from their family meal on plates and share it. By late 2016, it was clear more was needed and so in January, 2017, the Four Streets Project was born.

Now, with 26 volunteers, they distribute food, water, hot soup and any other necessities homeless people might need such as dry socks, sleeping bags and toiletries.

Donna said: "Our volunteers come from all walks of life, many from either health, education and social care. Our food comes from either Pret or Eat. "THey donate fresh but unsold food every evening and our water comes from Fenwicks, the café in Priory Park.

"Phoebe has been involved since day one helping to deliver food and supplies, always with adult supervision.

"Due to her illness, she is a bit slower getting around but that’s OK. She has a trike with a large basket and frequently cycles around the pedestrianised area.

"I feel very proud of Phoebe as despite being born with significant difficulties she has always worked really hard to overcome them. I am very proud of her for being nominated and having won the award.

"Being homeless could happen to any of us, many people are in temporary short term employment, there is less job security, housing is expensive and in short supply.

"Phoebe continues to work hard to be the best she possibly can and that she will be happy, while being the best she can. THe kindness and compassion for others that she has been blessed with will continue to grow and develop as she grows up."

Hotel's royal past on view RUSSIAN royalty's links with Bognor Regis have gone on show in the town museum for the first time.

THe signatures of the Romanov family members are contained in a visitors' book of the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

THe imperial dynasty visited Bognor when Princess Helena Vladimirovna stayed there from June 4-6, 1910, followed

by Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich on October 1, 1911.

Also stopping off at the popular hotel were Christopher Prince of Greece in 1910 and Victoria of Britain and Ireland, the daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, in 1910.

THe visitors' book from 1901-14 was donated to the museum from Barbara Macrae. She and her partner, Andreas Violaris, owned the hotel in the late 1970s. Mr Violaris passed away last year and Ms Macrae wanted the book to be seen by many people as possible.

Museum curator Chris Burstow told guests at last Friday's preview night: "One of our most exciting new acquisitions is a visitors' book from the Royal Norfolk Hotel and this forms the centrepiece of a new display about not only the changing face of the hotel but about some of its most famous guests."

Another new display for this year at the museum in West Street, run by Bognor Regis Local History Society, shows a small selection of the Noddy memorabilia owned by town resident Cliff Mewett.

THE CHAIRMAN of the Board of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and its council of governors has announced his retirement at the end of May. Mike Viggers has been chairman of Western Sussex since 2011, a period in which the trust became only the third in England to be named as ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission and has been rated by staff as one of the best NHS organisations in the country at which to work or be treated.

Mike said: “THe decision to retire has been the most difficult of my working life. I have spent seven wonderful years with such outstanding people at Western Sussex.

"Witnessing the dedication staff in our hospitals show to their patients day in and day out has been a truly humbling experience and I thank them all for that incredible commitment.

“However, at the age of 65, I feel the time is right to spend more time with my family and grandchildren, and allow another the privilege of chairing these two great organisations and helping them continue improving care for patients.”

Trust chief executive Marianne Griffiths paid tribute to Mike and his own contribution to the organisation, saying: “We often talk about our staff going the extra mile for patients, but that absolutely applies to Mike’s own commitment to them, too.

“We all wish Mike a very happy retirement. We hope to appoint his successor very soon.”

Helping others earns Darci a global award A BOGNOR REGIS student was one of just two in the country this year to be presented with a worldwide award.

Darci Scott, a pupil of THe Regis School pictured right, received the We Generation Award for her commitment to social action.

She took to the stage in the SSE Arena in Wembley in front of 20,000 people and was presented with the award by Lord Rumi Verjee and Sir Richard Branson's daughter and We book author, Holly Branson.

She met We founder, Craig Kielburger, and enjoyed the rest of We Day 2018 where she heard inspirational performances from artists such as singer Alexandra Burke and speeches from Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

THe We UK team was impressed by the work of Darci, 12, when she helped to organise a special mini We Day for 100 primary school children around Bognor Regis, during which she led a dance.

She was also one of the key students who led a food drive last November that saw the school collect more than 1,600kg of food for the town's foodbank.

She said: "We can make a change, we can be the change. We are the change.

"THe inspirational speeches at We Day show us how to do it."

THe We Movement is an organisation that brings people together and shares resources and ideas to help young people see how their small actions can help change the world for the better.

THe Regis School has been involved with the organisation for five years. Darci's

connection began when she was ten and attended a mini We Day at THe Regis School with her primary school.

Inspired by the work of the Rights Respecting Ambassadors at the secondary school, she asked to join them when she arrived there.

She is helping to plan a water walk for We and a playground challenge to support Sport Aid and Unicef.

Caroline Saunders, the school's assistant principal, said: "We are so proud of Darci. She embodies our work as a Rights Respecting School and the values of the We Movement.

"She proves that anyone can change the world for the better and that small actions can make a really big difference.

"THis is a global award, with only a handful of young people internationally as recipients so it is fantastic one of our students has been recognised for such important work."

She was among 14 of the school's students who experienced We Day. THey stayed in London overnight and had the chance to meet Youtuber and author Connor Franta and musicians like Burke before they went into the event.

Year 10 student Jade Coles said: "Children were taught this year about the importance of standing up against discrimination and inequality.

"Feminist views were expressed and the whole room applauded when girls were spoken of.

"It was very moving to see such equality

and acceptability within the arena."

THe work of THe Regis School's staff and students to tackle food poverty has led We to film them for a short documentary.

THe footage will be shown on the Canadianbased charity's website and could feature in future We days in Britain, Canada and the USA. Alexia Posirca, 13, pictured top right, was involved with the filming.

She said: "I was really pleased to take part in meeting We, as they are a worldwide charity.

Mrs Saunders said: "Being asked to make this film is a reminder of just how special our students are.

THey go the extra mile and their efforts have been recognised and will, hopefully, inspire other schools to take part in the We programme."

Vape debate led by pupils OPINIONS of Felpham Community College students could help to shape public health policies in the area.

THe five pupils took part in this year's Arun Youth Council debate.

THis included a number of subjects based on the current news such as allowing students aged over 18 and teachers to vape on school premises, the routine arming of British police forces to deal with threats to national security and life bans for drug cheats in sport.

Year 9 student Joe Reavey was among the speakers. He said: "My favourite debate was about vaping. Everyone wanted to talk and voice their opinion, even the teachers who were accompanying the students at the event.

"THere were representatives from public health listening to this debate. So, we really felt our views were being heard and will be taken into

consideration with future plans and policies."

THe event was held in the council chamber of the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton. Four other schools took part.

Felpham's sixth formers opened this year's Big Sing. THis is held annually by the Felpham and Bognor Heads, or FAB. One of those who took part, Year 10 student Courtney Rogers said: "I am part of the FCC vocal group. THere is a good sense of friendship between us. I feel happy and alive when I sing."

Felpham's Years 7 and 8 students, pictured top right, took part in an interactive workshop about the dangers of under-age drinking.

Isobel Dove, a Year 8 student, said: "THe workshop was really good as the presentation was very 'real'.

"You could relate to it and see how something similar could happen to any of us."

` Charity uses cash PEOPLE in the Post area with Parkinson's are enjoying the benefits of a donation.

THe £900 from the Pagham Pram Race committee for the Chichester, Midhurst and Bognor Regis branch of Parkinson's UK has been used for tai chi and Trillers.

Both are beneficial to Parkinson's sufferers. Tai chi helps with strength and balance and can reduce the risk of falls and Trillers is a choir to give a sense of wellbeing and helps to retain speech.

Any Parkinson's sufferers and their carers in the area are welcome to go to the branch from 2pm-4.30pm on the third Wednesday monthly at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

THe Bognor Regis monthly meetings take place at the same venue on the first Tuesday monthly, except for January and August.

Chichester meetings take place on the third Monday each month at the Newell Centre and those in Midhurst on the second Wednesday at Bepton Road Church Hall, apart from January or August.

MEMBERS of a pensions campaign in Bognor Regis and Chichester will be holding a first anniversary meeting next week.

THe Bognor Chichester and South Coast branch of WASPI will stage the session at 6.30pm next Wednesday. It will take place at My Sisters' House, opposite the library in London Road.

THe next day will see some of the branch's members talk to the Labour Party women's group at a meeting in Littlehampton. April 12 will see the WASPI women at a women's inequality event at the United Church in the town.

Holiday company joins with sea safety charity f Shane Morton with governors' chairman Jo Naylor

Head's new role will help diocese HEADTEACHER Shane Morton left his Felpham schools yesterday to take on a new role.

Mr Morton has served the Bishop Tufnell CE schools in his roles as headteacher of the junior school and then executive headteacher of the infant and junior schools in a period dating back more than 12 years.

He has said goodbye to their classrooms in Pennyfields to take up an exciting post within the Church of England and the Diocese of Chichester in its schools department.

He will be leading a team of church schools' support advisors.

A spokesman for the schools said: "Shane will move from serving hundreds of children in the Felpham

A PAGHAM holiday site owner has partnered with a lifesaving charity.

Haven runs Church Farm Holiday Village on the edge of the Pagham Harbour local nature reserve and has joined with the RNLI to help to save lives.

THe partnership was launched on Monday and will see the lifeboat rescuers become Haven's exclusive national charity partner for at least three years.

THe link aims to fully integrate the RNLI with Haven across the company's 36 family holiday parks in support of Haven's Safe & Secure attitude towards

schools to thousands of children right across West and East Sussex.

"Shane commented in his farewell party that it was the spirit of the actual man, Bishop Tufnell, who inspired his leadership.

"Shane has embodied the Christian values of the school, from service to humility, faithfulness, to courage.

"He has led from the front and many staff, past and present, said farewell to him."

THe neighbouring Bishop Tufnell schools federated last September to create a single governing body.

THe Diocese of Chichester's education department offers a range of services to governors, headteachers and clergy.

St Ives comes to Chichester Max Wildman is a artist whose popular success revolves around an uncanny ability to create works in the style of Alfred Wallis - that most enigmatic of naive painters who lived and worked in St Ives in the first half of the 1900s. He will be exhibiting over 50 of his most recent works at the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester, from 27th March to the 8th April.

Alfred Wallis is a legendary figure in St Ives artistic life - a fisherman and scrap dealer who took up painting in his seventies. Wallis is said to have amazed sophisticated modernists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood one day during a visit to St Ives. THey were walking near Porthmeor Beach when the pair happened upon Wallis working in his cottage, and were both immediately impressed by his untrained, uninhibited approach.

Wallis worked with whatever materials he could lay his hands on - mostly ordinary household or ships paint, as well as pencil and crayon. He used scraps of cardboard salvaged from the local grocer, which he cut into irregular shapes. Perspective was unimportant to this intuitive painter, who

made objects bigger or smaller depending on the importance he place upon them! His paintings were mainly seascapes or boats which he painted from memory - recalling the years he spend at sea.

Wallis's work eventually became much sought after, making tens of thousands per piece, but he himself died in the poorhouse before being able to reap any reward. Many of his paintings can now be see at Kettles Yard in Cambridge, which is where Max Wildman first encountered them. Having being fascinated by primitive and naive art for some time, he began experimenting using the same materials and techniques that Wallis would have used, and drawing on the same subjects - produces convincing, authentic looking works which are presented in a variety of vintage frames.

For more than a decade now, Wildman has been immersed in perfecting that elusive "Wallis look", and sells his work in many galleries across the country. His aim is to produce Wallis style paintings that look as realistic as possible - but at a tiny fraction of the price of an original. As fellow artist and sculptor John Maltby puts it - "Max Wildman is an artist who certainly knows his Wallis. His paintings are deceptively simple, and at their best they are often aphorisms of this unique St Ives artrist. Once again, Wallis is affordable!"

Easter exhibition at Tangmere Museum THE United States entered the First World War in April, 1917, and an agreement was signed between the British and American governments for the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force (ASAEF) to contribute 30 night bombardment squadrons to the Allied effort.

THese 30 squadrons were to be equipped with an initial order of 310 Handley Page 0/400 twin-engined bombers to be built under licence in the United States and then shipped to Britain for assembly and fitting out.

aerodromes in Sussex commenced during 1917 at Tangmere, Ford Junction, Rustington, Southbourne and Goring-onSea. By the spring of 1918, the work at Tangmere on constructing the ‘Training Depot’ was almost complete; three ‘aeroplane sheds’ and a Handley Page shed to house four of the large bombers had been constructed and the landing ground was ready for use.

However, it was not the Americans who were first to use to use the new aerodrome.

In March, 1918, three newly formed Royal Flying Corps squadrons (Nos 91, 92 and 93) arrived to work-up prior to moving to France and on April 1 these squadrons became part of the newly-formed Royal Air Force.

THe first fatalities at Tangmere occurred six days later on April 7 when three members of 92 Squadron, one of whom was American, were killed in a mid-air collision over the aerodrome when a Sopwith Pup and an Avro 504 collided.

In July, the three RAF squadrons left, the SE 5a scout equipped No 92 for France and the other two squadrons to be disbanded. THe aerodrome then prepared itself for new arrivals.

Between August and November, American aviators arrived at Tangmere and commenced their flying training on a variety of aircraft including British-built HP 0/400 bombers. To provide recreation for the new visitors, an American club was set up in one of the large houses in North Pallant, Chichester.

However, by the Armistice on November 11, none of the American built bombers had arrived and by the end of the year all the Americans had left for home.

THe story of the newly-opened Tangmere aerodrome in 1918 and the formation of the RAF is told in a temporary exhibition to be held at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum from March 30 until April 15.

In addition to explanation boards, models and a film showing the RAF aircraft types based at this famous airfield between 1918 and 1970, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to sit in an accurate replica of an SE 5a First World War cockpit and to ‘fly’ this aircraft on one of the simulators.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the normal museum entrance fee.

Link between stomach and brain is food for thought I AM back out working in Dubai this week, which of course I love. I have been fortunate enough to have a three-hour lunch break at the beach, with a large coconut for my cocktail of choice and half a watermelon the size of the moon for lunch! For me, it doesn’t get much better than that… Heat, sun and beautiful food! Paradise!

THe one thing that becomes more and more

apparent to me as I trot round the globe giving health lectures and seeing clients from all nationalities, is that it doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, or what position you hold within your company, no-one in this modern society is free from stress and anxiety. It’s out of control. And what are we all striving for?

Apparently, the latest statistics for the UK show that one in four people is suffering from serious mental health issues, and one in six people report experiencing a more common mental health problem such as anxiety and mild depression or feelings of low mood.

THis is a hugh percentage of people. THere is something very wrong with society, as we know it.

I see lots of teenagers in my clinics now suffering from anxiety, and is it that our expectations of them are too high? Or, their expectations of themselves are too much?

Five years ago, I wasn’t seeing even half the amount of people with these issues as I see now, so even in that relatively short space of time period things are changing rapidly.

Stay Steady and Strong by Improving your Strength and Balance ONE in three people over 65 (plenty of them in decent health) will have a fall this year. Our risk of falling increases as we age and half of people over 80 will fall at least once this year! We can't stop the ageing process but we can counteract some of the effects with a few gentle tweaks to our lifestyle.

I think a lot of people know now that diet and gut health can seriously affect mental health symptoms such as stress-related disorders, depression and anxiety.

Signalling between the gut and the brain includes communication via the immune system, central nervous system and the endocrine (hormonal) system, which in turn impacts mood and behaviour.

THis communication is under the influence of the gut microbiota. THe gut is home to hundreds of trillions of micro-organisms, which form part of the gut-microbiome-brain axis.

THe complex interactions involved are thought to be influential in conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, autism-spectrum disorders and ADHD. After running several tests on a patient in my clinic, I would be able to detect if there is a problem in the gut and then determined how to treat it.

Sometimes, it can be a really simple matter to correct and can make all the difference to a person's wellbeing, thought pattern, feelings of anxiety and feelings of happiness.

Can you imagine? A lifetime of healthy eating, or a lifetime of medication, which can often cause other side effects and symptoms.

Sometimes, if you look at life really simply and clean up your diet, so you take the toxins and stress away from your physical body, it’s amazing what can happen to the mind.

Even just the realisation that the two are connected can help address health issues.

Knowledge is always power, so if you suffer, get to know as much about your subject as you can, because it often removes the fear.

Spring, apparently, is almost here and, at the moment, if you locate a Sainsbury's store, six bottles purchased will yield a 25 per cent reduction in the final purchase price what is there not to like about this?

Armed with this information, I duly headed towards a Sainsbury store and, with Easter Day in mind, perused the Champagne and sparkling wine section and stumbled across a La Cuvée Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne on offer at £25 and, if one of six, at a most enticing price of just £18.75!

La Cuvée is their signature Champagne, the new rebranded Brut NV using the purest grape juice. It is characterised by a Chardonnay content of 55 per cent of the blend and an extra year of ageing in the cellar on the lees which adds to the complexity.

A pale golden hue, needle-fine mousse and very fine bubbles, this Champagne is delicate, fresh and elegant with a hint of honeysuckle and the tiniest hint of marzipan and one that undoubtedly

should regale your palate!

As for sparklers, the Cloudy Bay Pelorus, assuredly the Rolls-Royce of Champagne alternatives, is retailing for just £15, if one of six, and is an apéritif style of sparkling wine with lemon, hazelnut and brioche flavours to the fore - a veritable delight!

1. Bring an 8-quart stock pot of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente.

2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat oil. Add mushrooms and spread in an even layer; cook for 3 minutes before stirring to let the mushrooms brown. Add garlic, season with salt and pepper, and cook 2 minutes more. Add stock and asparagus, then

using a wooden spoon, scrape bottom of pan to remove the browned garlic and mushrooms.

Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.

Add butter, pasta, and both cheeses, then gently mix with tongs. (If the pasta seems dry, slowly add reserved pasta water until desired consistency is reached.)

3. Serve in skillet or transfer pasta to a platter and top with grated Parmesan, a drizzle of olive oil and parsley.

Serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS • 225ml semi-skimmed milk • 50g butter, chopped, plus extra for greasing • 5 tbsp orange shred marmalade • 450g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 100g raisins • 50g candied mixed peel • 100g dark chocolate, chopped • 1 large egg, beaten • 100g plain flour

Method Heat the milk in a pan until steaming. Remove from the heat, add the butter and 3 tbsp marmalade, and stir until dissolved.

Mix the bread flour, yeast, cinnamon, raisins, candied peel, chocolate and 1 tsp salt in a large bowl. Add the egg to the milk mixture, tip into the flour and stir to make a soft dough. Flour the work surface and your hands, then knead the dough for 10 mins until smooth and elastic. If any fruit or chocolate pieces escape, keep kneading them back in.

Grease, then line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces. Shape them into buns by kneading each and then rolling under one hand on the work surface until smooth. Put the buns on the baking sheet, leaving room for rising, then slightly

press them down to flatten a little. Cover loosely with cling film and prove in a warm place for 2 hrs or until the buns are well risen and doubled in size. Be patient, as it will make all the difference to the texture.

Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. Gradualy stir 90-105ml water into the plain flour to make a smooth, thick paste.

Pour the mixture into a food bag and snip off a corner to make a hole about 5mm wide, then use it to pipe the crosses onto the buns. Bake for 20-25 mins until the buns are risen and golden brown, and sound hollow when tapped underneath.

For the glaze, melt the remaining marmalade in the microwave or a small pan and brush over the buns while they're hot, then leave to cool. Eat on the day of baking, or toast the next day.

Community News & Views STUDENTS enjoy one of the best learning experiences in the country at the University of Chichester, according to a national league table.

Results of the 2018 Times Higher Education Student Experience survey ranked it in the top ten of all UK universities.

THe study, published last week, questioned more than 20,000 students across the country on 22 aspects of university life.

THese included teaching quality, facilities, accommodation and social life.

THe University of Chichester - which moved up to tenth from 27th position in 2016 - also ranked in the top three for security as well as student welfare, and fifth for academic experience.

Vice-chancellor Professor Jane Longmore said: "It is very pleasing to see our outstanding performance in student experience so clearly reflected in the Times Higher Education.

"Ensuring our students get the best experience possible while studying here is crucial to us and we must also acknowledge the key role that our high-quality staff have played in achieving this result."

Students also helped the university achieve a top-two finish in the categories of good personal relationships with teaching staff, fourth for good environment on campus and fifth for tuition in small groups.

Times Higher Education editor John Gill said: "Understanding the student experience has never been more important to universities, which are competing with one another to a far greater extent than they once did.

"THat competition plays out in the academic experience, of course, but also the facilities and lifestyles on offer for those who choose to study at a particular institution."

POPULAR networking events are returning to Chichester next month.

THe sessions by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester enable charities in the area and voluntary organisations to get together to share ideas and best practice, discuss problem solving and share any news, activities or upcoming events.

THe free event will take place from 10am-11.30am on April 17 at THe Newell Centre in Tozer Way. It will begin with a chance for people to introduce themselves and their organisation as well as promote any current projects or activities of which they would like to raise awareness.

Each person is limited to a one minute slot to allow plenty of time for networking. THe session will be informal and relaxed with plenty of tea and cake.

Jenny Holmes, from VAAC, said: "We know from experience and what our members tell us that opportunities to get together with other organisations working locally is invaluable.

"THe chance to talk to other people who might be having the same experiences and issues and to find out what else is going on nearby is really helpful for our member organisations.

"THese events aren't about VAAC. We simply facilitate the sessions and give our organisations a chance to get together and chat. We are, of course, on hand if they want to talk to use about the support we can provide."

VAAC held a similar event recently in Petworth, pictured above, with 30 attendees, who represented 26 organisations in the area. Feedback from the session was very positive and the buzz during the session was a great testament to the partnerships and connections that were made.

A CHARITY is calling on Chichester and Bognor Regis residents to say 'THank You' to those who served in the First World War. THe Royal British Legion has launched a movement to reflect on the conflict as the 100th anniversary of its final 100 days nears.

During that period, from August 8 to November 11, the Legion is inviting the public to remember the 1.2m British and Commonwealth armed forces who lost their lives in the war and those who played their part on the home front.

Charles Byrne, the Legion's director general, said the end of the First World War centenary was a chance for everybody to say thank you in their own way to all those involved in the war.

THey could have sacrificed their lives, returned from the fighting, worked in factories and on the land or pioneered advances in medicine, technology and the arts.

While the 100th anniversary

CHILDREN from Puddle Ducks Hampshire and West Sussex have taken part in a national water safety week.

THe event saw them learning all about water safety while wearing their pyjamas.

THe Swimming Teachers' Association organises the annual water safety campaign with the aim of encouraging people to learn to swim safely.

Innovative swim school Puddle Ducks holds its weeklong pyjama event because

of the armistice that ended the fighting 100 years ago marks a poignant time of reflection, it is also a time to look forward to the future with the promise to make it a better place.

"Everyone living in the nation today has a reason to say 'thank you' to this special generation."

THose who take part could come from all cultures and faiths, community groups, schools, companies and sports club to express their gratitude to those who gave themselves to the war and its aftermath and rebuilt a better nation from its darkest hour.

THe Legion is asking the nation to plan a 'thank you' activity to take place from August 8.

THe day the clocks go back a measure introduced during the First World War to save daylight hours - will be a focus for 'THank You' activity on October 28.

Alison Merrett, owner of Puddle Ducks Hampshire and West Sussex, said: "During our PJ Week, all parents, children and even our teachers were encouraged to wear their pyjamas. We are so proud of all the children, pictured above, who took part in our water safety week. THey were all dressed head to toe in their pyjamas and eager to learn.".

MILITARY officials have honoured the University of Chichester for its continued support of the armed forces.

THey presented the university with an employer recognition scheme bronze award for its commitment to reservists, cadets and instructors, veterans and the families of service personnel.

Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Catherine Harper said receiving the award was a significant moment for the unversity.

"We are a value-driven instituion with a sense of pride in our community, which encompasses personnel from across the armed forces.

"Reservists and veterans bring a variety of transferable skills to the university, such as leadership, team working, communication and organisational ability, developed during military careers.

"THe award proves our dedication to supporting the armed forces," she said.

THe employer recognition scheme was launched in 2014 to reward employers with bronze, silver and gold accolades for advocating support to the military.

Professor Jane Longmore, the university's vice-chancellor, was joined by Major Tim Osman, of 12 Regiment Royal Artillery, at a ceremony to sign the armed forces covenant.

THe agreement guarantees the commitment of the university to the men and women, and their families, who have and continue to serve their country.

Among the guests at the signing ceremony was Joe Ayres, the accommodation manager at the university, who has been a Royal Navy reservist for three years.

"He said: "Being a reservist gives me the opportunity to get involved in activities that I would only otherwise dream of doing.

"It also gives me the best of both worlds as I can continue developing my career at the university but also learn new skills, knowledge and personal qualities with the navy, which in turn supports my civilian work."

CHURCHES around the Post Newspapers area are being asked to remember the world's seafarers in a special service.

Sea Sunday services will be taking place in congregrations around the world on July 8 in aid of the Sailors' Society.

And those in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas could join in the events.

Each year, the Christian charity - which celebrated its 200th birthday on March 18 - asks churchgoers to pray and give thanks for the world's 1.6m seafarers.

Stuart Rivers, chief executive of the Sailors' Society, said: "Whether they know it or not, the people of Bognor Regis rely upon seafarers.

"More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea - our clothes, phones, cars - even the bricks that make up our homes.

"All these goods are brought into the country by seafarers who risk extreme loneliness, dangerous storms and even piracy.

"Holding a Sea Sunday service for Sailors' Society is a fantastic way of recognising the amazing work seafarers do."

THe charity works internationally to support the world's 1.6m seafarers with practical, emotional and spiritual welfare support. It has created a variety of resources for churches, which it has made available free to download at seasundayhero.org THe resource pack includes a sermon outline, PowerPoint, videos, posters and Sunday School lesson plan and activities.

The outstanding beauty of Chichester Harbour

By Pat Saunders, Volunteer at the Novium Museum IN 1964, Chichester Harbour was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). THe area has been managed by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy since 1971.

Prior to this, the harbour was managed on one side by Havant and Warblington UDC Emsworth and on the other by the City of Chichester.

When the AONB was created, the boundary was defined as taking in the eastern edge side of Hayling Island and has around 50 miles of shoreline. As well as being an AONB, it has a strong historic character. Artefacts uncovered around the coast throw light on the people and their activities from the past such as the remains of a Medieval fish trap at Medway (the beach there is believed to date back to the 5th century), and the Roman Palace discovered at Fishbourne in 1961.

THe Conservancy are responsible for managing the harbour as a port authority, nature conservation and the harbour’s natural beauty. THere are a number of important habitats, in particular, the mud which provides feeding for birds, especially visitors

over winter (from end of October to end of February), of which there are up to 50,000. Of these, about 10,000 are Brent Geese.

THese vegetarian birds first feed on eel-grass, then move to on to local fields. Farmers don’t sow seed until they leave so the Brent Geese often feed on the grass next to Fishbourne Roman Palace car park. THe harbour is a designated Ramsar site, which means it is on a list of globally important wetland sites.

THere is woodland and saltmarsh, wet land, sand dunes at East Head and a sand spit. THe sand spit has been managed by the National Trust since 1974 in an effort to stabilise the sand dunes, the oldest of which are grey with lichen. Marram grass, a species that colonises new sand dunes and stabilises them, helping them to grow bigger, has also been planted from time to time.

In 2002, the Harbour Trust was set up to buy and lease land to protect the harbours’ natural beauty and wildlife habitats. THe Conservancy are assisted by Friends of Chichester Harbour, a charity linked with the Conservancy, whose volunteers undertake tasks such as litter-

picking and tree planting, currently planting up to 10,000 trees a year. Conserving these habitats assists with the sea defences.

THe Harbour Conservancy office is based at Itchenor, where you will also find a solar-powered catamaran “Solar Heritage” which runs trips round the harbour. Based at Emsworth is the Victorian Oyster boat “Terror” which was bought for £1 and later restored with £100,000 of Heritage Lottery funding which also sails with passengers around the harbour from Emsworth Yacht Harbour.

On the eastern side of Chichester Harbour is Chichester Marina and associated yacht club. THe marina was created in 1964/65 on former salterns works north of Birdham Pool which claims to be the first ever marina in the country. THis is the last working tidal pool in Sussex and lies south of the western end of Chichester Ship Canal.

By the lock is an old mill building, dating back to 1768, which ceased working as a mill in 1935. When it was functioning, it operated for three-and-a-half hours before and after high tide. It was owned by the Farne family who sold it to Captain and Mrs H. Rowland S. Coldicott in 1935.

THey founded Birdham Estates Ltd to develop and manage the site sympathetically.

THe outer 11-acre mill pool was enclosed as a harbour for small boats which at that time could accommodate 200 sea-going vessels.

THey permitted houses to be built in the surrounding community in an attempt to attract yachting people, with houseboats actively discouraged.

THe nearby mill was leased out as Birdham Yacht Yard which undertook all necessary boat repairs. When the site opened in 1937 it was one of Britain’s first marinas.

During the Second World War, the Admiralty worked on Land Craft Infantry (LCIs), boats that were specifically designed to load large numbers of infantry straight onto the beaches.

At the associated yards of Bosham, Emsworth and Itchenor, other motor launches, landing craft and smaller war-time vessels were built.

THe area was referred to as HMS Sea Serpent.

A number of the war-time vessels, along with some of the ‘little ships’ that took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk, were moored at the end of the canal.

THe war-time vessels were largely removed in the early 1960s when the present marina was created. A locked marina with over 1,000 berths, it is currently run by Premier Marinas, which also runs the boatyard and marine services where boats of up to 50 feet can be accommodated.

families and carers in Chichester city. They are looking for volunteers to be trained and equipped to be a spiritual befriender of older people, and visit them at Residential Homes and in their own homes. They are also looking for someone to help with ad hoc administrative help. They require all of their volunteers to be practising Christians, which is usually, but not always, illustrated by active church membership.

Volunteer Trustee – Home Start - Arun Home-Start is a voluntary organisation in which volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown. The board of trustees is responsible for leading the strategic direction, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and maintaining the performance and quality of the scheme.

The board is also responsible for the scheme’s property, financial management, security, good governance, the promotion of home-start and for employing staff. Their job is to ensure that the resources of the scheme are used effectively. If you have the ability to work as part of a team, as well as an understanding of the pressures

facing parents today and an interest in supporting them, they’d love to hear from you. Skills such as business or personnel management, finance, fundraising and IT would be welcomed.

Membership Development – Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group (MWHG) is a volunteer led charity dedicated to the preservation and restoration of habitats and heritage, and caring for the shared green spaces of the Manhood Peninsula.

They require an imaginative person to help recruit new members and volunteers for the group. This will involve promoting the group at events and through the local media, as well as making the most of social networking.

This will be a great opportunity to think creatively about the process and develop new ideas. You will work closely with the management team and other key volunteers. This is a chance to develop a whole range of skills, especially IT and communication skills. Crucially an increased membership will enable us to extend our work and be a louder voice for wildlife heritage.

Blues' top four ambitions remain PostSport despite away defeat to high-flyers CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping to finish the season on a high and nail down a top four finish. With the Blues having Easter weekend off, Scott Ashley's side have time to regroup and focus on the final three matches of the London One South campaign.

Even with two matches away from Oaklands Park, Chi's run in looks favourable on paper, with all their remaining games against sides in the bottom six.

However, after a 29-15 defeat away at second-place Medway last weekend, Blues know they need one more win to seal that top four spot.

THat defeat also means that Chi know they can no longer catch local rivals Havant who are now 16 points clear in third.

Chi made five changes to the squad that drew at London Cornish last time out, with Ben Deavall, Joe Woods, Declan Johnson, Nick Blount and Chris Johnson starting in the pack. But it was the home side that made the better start, heading into a 8-0 lead.

Chi found their stride soon with Chris Johnson touching down after a powerful driving maul and then Harry Seaman crossing to put them into 10-8 lead.

Medway hit back with another penalty to go in at the break in the lead.

Into the second period and the Kent side came out on the front foot, scoring 13 points in 15 minutes to take control of the match.

Chi would not give up, though, and a sparkling counter resulted in Ben Robson beating two defenders to touch down for their third try. Try as they might further scores did not follow. Instead, Medway crossed in the closing moments to seal the win.

Blues return to action on April 7 when they head to second-bottom Maidstone (3pm). * Bognor RFC go in to the Easter weekend on a high after crushing Alresford 52-18 on the road.

Centre Sam Newcombe took the plaudits, scoring a hat-trick in the bonus-point victory.

THose five points have sealed second spot for the Purple and Greens in Hampshire One. While they still have two matches left, Bognor are now ten points behind unbeaten league leaders United Services Portsmouth, which means they have to all but settle for the runners up spot.

THey return to action on April 7 with a home match against Isle of Wight (3pm).

DARTS: Jack Danahar and Richard Ragless left friendships well away from the oche as they sank QE2 teammates Wayne Wadsworth and Cliff Prior to take the Double In Double Out Darts League division one pairs title.

A dozen teams took part in the competition at the Newtown Social Club.

Both Wadsworth and Prior and Danahar and Ragless sealed their spots in the final with comfortable semi final victories to make it an all QE2 affair.

THe best-of-five legs showdown saw Prior win the bullseye over Ragless to get the first throw.

A 180 followed from Prior on his second throw put them in the lead.

But a 140 from Ragless, sandwiched by 99 & 97 from Danahar, gave them a chance.

Despite multiple doubles misses from both sides, Ragless eventually hit the double for the first leg.

140s from both Prior and Danahar saw a close second leg. Wadsworth missed double 8 for the leg, as did Prior, allowing Danahar to leave double top for Ragless, which he hit to go 2-0 up.

Falcons sign off season on a high

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club rounded off the indoor season with some silverware after a great team tournament performance.

Sides from across the south travelled to Portsmouth for the annual Tom Prince Indoor Softball Tournament.

After a slow start and a defeat to Maidenhead, the Falcons picked up the pace in their second game against the Solent Sluggers.

Hettie McNeil on first base and pitcher Jason Mercer were an unbreakable defence in the first innings and, in the second, the alert infield pairing of James Wheeler and Mike Moore continued to frustrate the opposition.

A superb tag at second base and a breathtaking triple play from shortstop Cary Chen helped see the Falcons take the match 23-6.

With further wins, they eventually progressed into the silver final, facing league rivals Southsea Sharks.

THe Chichester defence remained strong, with junior Jenny Horton taking a number of flyball catches at left field, leaving the Sharks frustrated.

THe Falcons batted well and edged slightly ahead. But in the second innings Chichester really let the bats swing and a flurry of home runs put the Falcons out of sight and to an eventual 24-14 win and silverware to end the indoor season.

Attention now turns to the outdoor season with practice sessions for all ages underway at their home in Oaklands Park.

Chi have a teeball team for ages seven to ten, a fastpitch juniors team for ages 11-16 and an adults slowpitch team for 16 and up.

Both teams are mixed, so boys and girls play in the same team.

With an informal and competitive playing style, the Falcons continue to go from strength to strength each year.

THe third leg saw poor scoring from Prior and Wadsworth, while a 140 from Ragless was equalled by Danahar with a ton and 139 to leave 32.

All Ragless needed was one dart to hit double 16, for a 16 dart leg, the match win, making himself and Danahar the Division One Pairs Champions.

Division Two saw 19 pairs turn up and the final was contested between Trish Kidd and Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers) and Andy Chant and Rob Rice (Chi Snooker Club).

THe first two legs were shared. But in the third Kidd and Cooper began to take charge.

Cooper hit double ten to take the third leg and strong scores of 81 from Cooper, and 125 from Kidd put them in the driving seat.

THey didn't miss out, with Cooper taking one dart to hit double 16 to take the win and the trophy.

SHORT MAT BOWLS: After winning the league last weekend, Boxgrove-based Infinity completed the double by lifting the Knockout Cup. In the semi-final, the team overcame THe Martlets. On mat one, John Simms, Steve Jeffery, Jack Rollings and Charlotte Rollings had a good match, finally winning 21-12. On mat two, Chris Jeffery, Denise Kirby, Chris Page and Richard Jeffery won 38-8.

Infinity then followed that up with a convincing victory over Lavant. On mat one, the team won 37-9 while mat two resulted in a 26-8 scoreline.

Infinity have won the Cup for the last four years but it was the first time since forming eight years ago they have won the League.

Second-placed Lions are still in the hunt for promotion

'We're ahead of our target' CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Matt Wright says his side have already surpassed his points tally for the season after a 1-0 victory over Gillingham all but secured their FA Premier League South status for next season.

Competing at step three of the women's game for the first time, Chi have looked at ease against sides with far more experience.

Even an injury crisis, frustration at cancelled games and a late switch of venue to Bognor's Nyewood Lane did not throw them from their stride, with Jess Lewry's goal giving them the win against the Gills.

THe Kent side had a host of opportunities to score but were continuously denied by Chi's keeper Sadie WilsonBlakely as the home side recorded their fourth clean sheet of the season.

THose three points put Chi into seventh in the 12 team division with seven matches still to play.

Speaking after the match, Wright said: “THat was by far our worst performance of the season and we needed to show we were better than that.

“Every time we gain points in the league we further surpass the predicted total I was targeting."

Chi have struggled with injuries in recent weeks with five players on the treatment table.

THere is also the frustration of the fixture list with Sunday’s game only the fifth competitive game since the New Year and the second since the 4-0 win over Gillingham on November 26.

Postponements because of the weather and cup ties have ripped apart the schedule.

Even with seven matches still to come, it's three weeks until Chi return to action.

THe manager was full of praise for his players nonetheless, saying: “THe fragmented nature of the season is hard to deal with, that’s our first league home game since November 19.

“Regardless of this, the players have continued to train hard and have really shown a high level of dedication to the club.

“We will now spend the next three weeks getting ourselves ready for the away game to Coventry United.”

PAGHAM'S promotion credentials will be put to the test as they face two crucial matches in four days.

With just seven games of the league campaign to go, the Lions sit second in the SCFL Premier - just three points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA. THeir hopes were boosted in the past week after taking four points from six as others around them dropped points.

But Easter will provide a stern test for Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds' side - with a tough away match at AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm) followed by a derby day showdown with Chichester City at Nyetimber Lane on Monday (11am).

Even though their local rivals have slipped to sixth, they remain in the hunt for the two promotion places - which puts more pressure on the Easter Monday showdown.

Lions' fans will be hoping for a repeat of last Saturday's performance when Pagham came from 2-0 down to Newhaven to score three times in the last 13 minutes to seal the win.

THe hero was top-scorer Dan Simmonds, who bagged a hat-trick in the comeback.

But Simmonds and his fellow freescorers were unable to repeat the trick in midweek when the Lions drew a blank for the first time in the league since January 6.

Derby day looms for Chichester

CHICHESTER City will be out for revenge as they prepare for a derby day showdown with Pagham which could decide their promotion fate. Miles Rutherford's title chasers are still bruised after the Lions smashed five past them on Boxing Day. With both sides in contention for promotion to Isthmian South, Easter Monday's showdown at Nyetimber Lane means there will be even more at stake than local pride.

A bumper crowd is expected to see if Chi, who are sixth in the SCFL Premier, can exact revenge on their near neighbours. But their

preparations have been far from smooth in a run that has seen them win just once in four matches.

THe latest was a 1-1 draw at AFC Uckfield Town, when a Kaleem Haitham strike was wiped out by a late equaliser which saw City drop two vital points in the race for the title.

THat sequence of results has seen them slip down the table. But, with other sides also slipping up, they are only six points off league leaders Horsham YMCA with a game in hand.

Daren Pearce's side are still in the hunt for promotion back to senior football, even if bad weather has been against them in recent weeks. With three games in hand, Sids know that a couple of wins can put them right back in the promotion race. THen, Easter Monday will see them head to near neighbours Bosham (11am).

THe Robins have been on an excellent run of late, winning six on the bounce which has put them in the race for the top two spots.

Before welcoming their near neighbours, Bosham have a match with Worthing Town tomorrow (3pm).

Broom sweeps away rivals to win city race WILL BROOM was the first across the line as the 2018 Chichester Corporate Challenge came to a close.

More than 800 runners of all ages took part in the series of street races which took place on three Wednesday evenings in the city centre. THe third and final leg on March 21 turned out to be the most popular of the 2018 series, with Broom leading the field of nearly 400 adult racers home around the 4,500m track. His time of 13 minutes 24 seconds was ten seconds faster than his nearest competitor, Edward Dodd (Russell Giles Partnership - 13:34) and Havant's Chirs Spinks (13:36) in third.

women's race in 15:19 (32nd overall). THis was more than 30 seconds quicker than Charlotte Bowsher and Lucy THraves who came second and third in an identical time of 16:03.

Broom's sparkling run also inspired his team called Conrad's Lads to first place in the sports club competition with the quartet of Leo Stallard, Ben Collins and Ned Potter clocking a combined 55:33.

THe corporate crown was taken by Russell Giles Partnership (58:28) while the women's team title was won by DSTL Portsdown (1:03:21).

Before the adult race, more than 400 youngsters took part in a series of youth races.

THe results from the final leg will be added to the previous two legs for the overall winner.

Time running out for Bognor as relegation looms for club Next Game

CHELMSFORD CITY (H) Today, 3pm

THE ROCKS' revolution must start now if Bognor are to avoid the drop.

For much of the season, Jack Pearce's side have been sat in the relegation zone of National South.

With just nine games to go, time is running out for Bognor to start winning games and close the 13 point gap to safety.

Last weekend saw another potential chance to pick up a positive result fall by the wayside as a battling Weston-Super-Mare side defeated Bognor 1-0 away from home.

THat loss meant that the Rocks side had to make the long journey back from the west country with plenty to think on.

One thing that they will realise is that the Easter period is perhaps their last chance to pull themselves to start the recovery.

Today (Friday) at 3pm, play-off chasing Chelmsford City visit Nyewood Lane.

THen, on Easter Monday (3pm) Bognor head along the Sussex coast to near neighbours Eastbourne Borough to face their Sussex rivals under the direction of former manager Jamie Howell.

Both opponents are experiencing their own form problems.

THe Essex side have won just once in the past five matches in a run which has seen them drop out of the top seven.

Borough, meanwhile, may be in relative safety of 15th in the 22-team division but until

two recent wins they were in danger of being sucked into a relegation battle.

THese facts do give Bognor hope going into the double header.

But they mask truths which will hurt even the most positive of Rocks fans.

THey have been rooted in the relegation zone for seven of the past eight months.

THey have won just four matches in the league all season.

And with only nine matches of the season to go, they will need to more than double that tally to make up the 13 point gap.

A month ago there was hope.

But a run of what on paper looked like winnable games have not been kind to the Rocks, meaning that instead of points, Bognor have just been left with disappointment and ruing missed chances.

It was the same story on Saturday when Pearce's side had the better of the opening exchanges until Weston took the lead on 20 minutes.

After a quick break with a ball across the box, it was Kenan Dunnwald that poked in on his second attempt after being blocked with his first chance.

THen, after that, Bognor dominated possession and had the better chances. But even, with the addition of on-loan striker Justin Amaluzor, they could not find the breakthrough.

New boy has goals in his sights GOALS win matches. It's a cliche said and heard a million times over by football fans across the globe.

And Rocks fans know the score all too well this season as their side have struggled to find the back of the net. Bad fortune has some part to play in it with suspensions and injuries stopping key personnel from getting a run in the side.

But some would argue that even Lady Luck would struggle to get goals in a side which have lacked the killer edge for too long.

At the last count, Bognor had scored just four goals in nine matches, a run which has seen just four points collected.

THe latest player to pick up the goalscoring mantle is Justin Amaluzor, a 20 year old forward who has joined on loan from Barnet FC. With some 20 first team matches in the Football League behind him, the frontman has experience at a high level.

Loan spells at Hayes and Yeading, Hemel Hempstead Town and Hampton & Richmond will also stand in him good stead.

Amaluzor showed some good glimpses in his Bognor debut away at Weston last weekend. But matches are running out for the Rocks and the burden of firing a club to safety is a lot to place on young shoulders.

WATCHING the Rocks is never boring.

Despite current form, and the way the team are performing on the pitch, the coach trip to Weston super Mare with the Bognor fans was a real treat.

It was such a laugh to be around like-minded people who are all passionate about BRTFC. You wouldn’t have thought that we were second from bottom and staring relegation in the face.

Bumping into the team coach is always a pleasure and we did just that at the services en route to the game.

After getting quick photos with the latest offer at the stop off - garden gnomes - as Rocks fans chuckled jokingly at Doug Tuck meeting his long-lost brother, it was off to see Bognor fall to a 1-0 defeat. But I enjoyed the trip regardless.

THis was my third time of having travelled to Weston and I think this was the first occasion I have seen the Rocks lose.

As for garden gnomes Richard Essen (Rocks fan and volunteer) only went and bought one at the services station. Top man!

All of the puns never stopped all the way there and back. Oh, and Italian Rocks fan Sergio made the decision to jump on the players' coach at the services. Watch out for those roundabouts!

'Sat Nav Serg’, as he is affectionately known on the coach trips, is one of the many regular travellers on the coach trips. On the way up, I thought it was a nice gesture that Jack gave us some money (£80) for a drink for all the fans in the bar before kick off.

A deflected strike was the main difference at Weston, again a mistake costing us - the story of our season so

far really. THe game lacked quality at times and I felt we lacked in goal-scoring opportunities.

THe Welling United home game before this was particularly disappointing and, unfortunately, at least two of their goals I felt were very soft.

We had chances to get back into that game, but we didn’t take them and that was the only difference I felt.

I was impressed by both Welling and Weston and how well they kept the ball and moved it forward quickly.

THis is where we have fallen short recently.

When we win the ball back we appear to lose it in a dangerous area, with a loose pass or putting the ball out of play needlessly.

In my opinion, as long as the players have a real go at goal but fail then at least that is something. We can’t be afraid to fail from now until the end of the season as we have nothing to lose.

THere was noticeable upset from a section of fans behind the goal at the Weston game.

I can fully understand the frustration - but we all are feeling it at the moment.

We have been spoilt with success in the past few seasons and I think this season everyone thought we could stay up.

I read the comments on the message board but tend not to comment much, instead leaving my comments to this column.

It’s important that we all stay on the same page and fight to the end. Because this team will give it their all until the end of the season - that’s a fact.
