We deserve better for A27

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP fighting for improvements to the A27 has mounted pressure on the government to release the results of its long awaited public consultation.

As reported in The Chichester Post, MP Andrew Tyrie wrote to Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport last

week, urging him to release the results immediately.

But that is yet to happen. Now, Chichester Deserves Better has backed Mr Tyrie's letter but insisted that a further consultation takes place on Highways England's preferred route, as it is likely they will announce that once the results of the consultation are released.

In the letter, Chichester's MP said that the results must be published to

help win back the public's trust and to provide transparency, as so many people have lost faith in the entire consultation process.

Ben Kirk, from Chichester Deserves Better, said: "The recent letter from Andrew Tyrie is welcome, in that it acknowledges the problems with the current options and more so the process.

"It also recognises the importance that Chichester doesn’t risk the funding

and acknowledges that Chichester desperately needs improvements to the A27, something it has needed for years as the congestion progressively gets worse.

"Our position now, is that we genuinely want the best that can be achieved for upgrading the existing online route, within the constraints of budget and investment scope."

COUNCILLORS have agreed to raise the price of council tax by almost four per cent to fund adult social care.

West Sussex County Council has agreed its budget for 2017/18 at a meeting at County Hall, Chichester.

Measures to close a budget gap of £41.6m were agreed including £16.8m in efficiencies and savings across a number of services, and the use of £9.4m of reserves.

The council also agreed a council tax increase of 1.95 per cent plus an additional 2 per cent to fund adult social care.

It totals 3.95 per cent - the equivalent of an extra 92 pence per week for the average Band D household.

Cabinet member for finance, Jeremy Hunt, said: “The demand on our services is increasingly going up, but unfortunately the money we are receiving from central government is going down.

“Increases in council tax are now built into the government’s expectation of how services are funded so as well as our continuing drive for efficiencies, savings, and new ways of working, we had little choice but to increase council tax in order to protect frontline services.

“But we have kept the increase as low as possible for our residents and I believe this budget provides excellent value for money.”

The budget has been drawn up in line

with the priorities of ‘keeping you safe’, ‘providing education and schools’ and ‘roads, buses and countryside’, which were highlighted by residents last year in the county council’s What Matters to You survey.

Council leader Louise Goldsmith added: “We have listened carefully to our residents, both in terms of the services which matter most to them and also in terms of how much council tax they are prepared to pay.

“I’m pleased to say that because of our sound financial management we have not only been able to balance our budget and protect our services but we have also put forward plans for significant investment across West Sussex.

"Areas include adult social care, highways and transport, education, our fire and rescue service, and numerous schemes which will boost our local economy.”

Meanwhile, councillors also discussed the possibility of putting money aside to support schools across the county that are struggling due to the introduction of the government's National Funding Formula.

Headteachers and governers from the WorthLess West Sussex campaign had hoped for a cash injection of £20m. But the government has not yet indicated any extra cash will be coming their way.

Now, West Sussex County Council say it will consider emergency funding at its next meeting in March.

Labour councillors suggested a “financial lifeline” for schools, asking for £1.3m to be set aside for emergency education funding.

Hero's welcome for Ryan Lock FORMER chef Ryan Lock received a hero's welcome when his body was flown back to the UK. The Chichester man died after travelling to Syria to fight Islamic State militants alongside Kurdish forces.

He arrived back at Heathrow Airport and dozens of people, including members of the Kurdish community, held roses and framed pictures of 20-year-old Ryan, as his body was repatriated to the UK. Ryan was killed 10 days before he was due to return home.

Ryan, who had no previous military experience, joined Kurdish militia after telling his family he was going on holiday to Turkey in August last year.

He was killed on December 21.

Reports later emerged that Ryan

turned the gun on himself to avoid falling captive to IS and being held as a propaganda tool.

Big praise for city museum THE Novium museum has been voted one of the UK’s best-loved free attractions.

The Chichester museum has been voted third on a list of the south east’s favourite free attractions, placing at number 42 on the national list.

The survey of 1,000 people was undertaken by National Express to help inspire people to have fun for free in the half-term holidays.

It is part of the UK’s largest coach operator’s ‘Get out of London’ campaign to help open the eyes of people living in the capital to all the amazing attractions they can visit outside across the country. Every attraction on the list is free to enter though some welcome donations.

National Express managing director Chris Hardy said: “It can be expensive keeping kids entertained over half-term so we’ve pulled together a list showing people how they can make the most of the holidays for free.

"There’s no end of incredible sights to soak up in West Sussex for free but little captures the imagination like a great museum so it’s no surprise to see this attraction rank so highly.

"We hope our list helps encourage people to visit somewhere new."

The museum has a range of exhibitions including the popular Tim Peake exhibition which looks at the life and adventures of the Chichester astronaut.

Going back to Roman times

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk WHETHER it was experiencing life in a Roman school or learning how to make bread, youngsters have enjoyed getting a taste of life in Roman times.

Fishbourne Roman Palace held a week of different activities for children during half term.

It included Roman cooking, making clay pots and wearing costumes, with a fun-packed, hands-on day for the whole family.

Children had the opportunity to discover objects from 2,000 years ago and see how the palace would have looked in its heyday.

Katrina Burton is the property manager at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

She said: "It's been five days of activities around Roman daily life.

"Families have been doing bread making and food tasting.

"They have been trying their hand

at Roman writing and spinning and weaving.

"They have been dressing in Roman costumes and making clay lamps as well as playing Roman games and making mosaics.

"They have really enjoyed it. They have responded fantastically.

"Quite often it relates to what they are doing at school if they are learning about the Romans.

"It's been good for all ages. It's good to have that firsthand experience at doing something.

"It really makes them appreciate it and understand it.

"With things like the breadmaking they are grinding wheat and kneading the bread by hand.

"Today, you just go down to the shops and buy a loaf of bread.

"Children often don't appreciate the effort that goes into it."

Students to shine at show ART and design students at Chichester College are embarking on the opportunity of a lifetime.

The students, who are aged between 16 and 18, will be taking centre stage at this year’s Ideal Home Show in March, by designing the interiors of the show homes.

These are the focal point of the show, which runs from Friday, March 24, to Sunday, April 9, at Olympia in London, and will be visited by an estimated 250,000 people.

This year there will be two fully built houses – a thatched cottage and a three-storey apartment building - for visitors to explore, with Chichester College students designing the rooms.

The apartment building, sponsored by Barclays, will have three separate flats, designed to reflect the stories of their residents – from a young family to an older couple who are downsizing in retirement.

Julie Kapsalis, vice-principal at Chichester College, said: “Part of what makes Chichester College special are the experiences that we are able to open up to our students and we are delighted to have been given the chance to be involved with the Ideal Home Show in such a big way.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their tremendous talents on a huge stage, where hundreds of thousands of people will see what they can do."

University to give tourism a boost

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS by the University of Chichester to strengthen rural tourism in the Manhood Peninsula have taken a step forward after proposals were granted £71,000.

The project, led by academics of the institution’s Business School, intends to improve the visitor economy in the Selsey area by working with nearby businesses to increase visitor numbers.

The 12 month plan, which runs until December, is being funded by a grant from government body, the Rural Development Programme for England, to invigorate the Peninsula’s coastal and inland landscape and support economic expansion.

Its co-ordinator, Dr Jorge Gutic, a senior lecturer in tourism management at the university, said: “The plans will identify existing and new opportunities to develop sustainable tourism as well as the infrastructure and support needs that local businesses require in order to achieve their full economic potential.”

Proposals for the Manhood Peninsula project are being guided by the university’s Business School, which has a particular focus on regional regeneration and developing sustainable tourism in coastal communities across the UK and Europe.

Dr Andy Clegg, chairman of Visit Chichester which is also supporting the implementation of the project,

added: “Visitor spending on the Selsey Peninsula exceeds £100m and the project provides an exciting opportunity to further enhance the value of the visitor economy.”

The programme plans to work with existing tourism businesses to identify opportunities for new customers to boost business competitiveness and visitor experience.

The Peninsula project will initially develop a new destination management plan and support the formation of a new tourism partnership for the area.

It has already received support from community and government organisations including Visit Chichester, Selsey Town Council, the Manhood Peninsula Partnership, Arun and Chichester district councils, and Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

Caroyln Cobbold, project leader for the Manhood Peninsula Partnership, said protecting the character of the area is paramount as it is one of the last remaining areas of rural coastal plain in the south of England.

She added: “Bordered by the sea, Chichester, Medmerry and Pagham Harbours, and Chichester Canal, it is home to a rare and diverse range of wildlife habitats and stunning environments.

“This project aims to increase tourism whilst respecting the area's fragile environment.”

St Wilfrid's staff celebrate the re-opening of its charity shop CUSTOMERS at a charity shop were greeted with a glass of fizz and some canapes to mark their re-launch.

The St Wilfrid's Hospice shop in East Wittering has re-opened with a range of quality donations.

Store manager Michelle Dagwell proudly opened the doors.

She said: "Having had an extremely busy couple of days with lots of quality donations and getting everything ready, I was pleased that the time had finally arrived to open.

"The shop is bright and airy with a real beach feel. I am particularly happy with the changing room which

is the style of a beach hut – very fitting for the location of the shop."

St Wilfrid’s Hospice provides tailored end of life care both in the community and at the hospice, supporting patients living with a terminal illness, and their family and friends.

Their services are all provided free of charge, thanks to the generous support of fundraisers and donors.

Priory Park Festival set to make its return this summer

Taking place on July 7, 8 and 9, guests include frontman of The Stranglers Hugh Cornwell, Tony Christie, S Club, Dodgy, Georgie Fame, Deborah Bonham, The Christians and Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band.

Billed as ‘an eclectic weekend,’ the live music and arts event is held annually as part of the Festival of Chichester.

The inaugural Priory Park Festival last year attracted thousands of people to the historic park, with a line-up that included Sophie Ellis Bextor, The Feeling, Seth Lakeman and Courtney Pine.

This year, the festival will feature two stages. Each day of the three-date festival has a different theme, with jazz and blues on the Friday, rock and pop with a sprinkling of classical on the Saturday and a mixture on the Sunday.

Robin Bextor, organiser and festival director, said: "I hope there is something for all tastes here. We are delighted with the list of artists we have managed to put together and there is a wealth of local talent, too.

"I wanted the festival to reflect what local people wanted and we have worked hard to do that; not just with what is happening on stage, but also in terms of

ambience, food and drink providers and, of course, in our support of two local charities, Children on the Edge and The Apuldram Centre, who both do amazing work right here in Chichester.

Nearly 500 responses have been gathered so far, but Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals, wants as many people as possible to help inform its Quality Priorities 201718.

Dr George Findlay, medical director, said: “If you live, work or spend time in West Sussex, the quality of services provided by the hospitals in the area could affect you. Whether it’s emergency care, maternity care or ongoing treatment for a long-term health problem, you want your hospital to offer the best and safest care possible.

“Our trust already offers high quality care. Last year, we were rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and we are among the best performing NHS Trusts in the country.

“However, we are committed to further improving what we do for our patients and would like the community’s feedback to help shape our newly proposed Quality Priorities 2017-18.”

STAR of the Walking Dead series, David Morrissey, is to speak at the University of Chichester about a career across the world’s most popular film and television programmes.

The award-winning actor and director will take centre stage on Tuesday, March 7, at 5.30pm as part of the launch of the institution’s new creative and digital technologies courses.

Mr Morrissey, who has appeared in Doctor Who, will be speaking about the role of the Governor on the apocalyptic US show and taking the lead in recent BBC drama The Missing.

He will also talk about his on-stage career

with the Royal Shakespeare Company and as a director.

The talk has been organised as part of the launch of the university’s creative and digital technologies degrees which are intending to bring stars of the big and small screens to Chichester to speak with its students.

"We believe that it is vitally important that the potential negative impact on locals is acknowledged and acted on, and that the scheme should ensure minimal destruction of the environment and visual impact.

"It should also ensure optimisation of through and local traffic flows, but not to the detriment of local traffic, and should seek to ensure improvements in air pollution and road safety."

Mr Kirk told The Chichester Post that Highways England needed to be challenged in the future in order to improve. "We have previously suggested that serious consideration should be given to underpasses rather than flyovers and that the Stockbridge link road should not be tantamount to a southern bypass," he added.

"There is much that can be improved on the options presented and Highways England need to be challenged to “do better”. Mr Tyrie has called on the Secretary of State to publish the results of the consultation.

"We understand that standard practice

is that a consultation report is published at the same time as the preferred option, and that this is not a case of the powers that be withholding information.

"We do, however, acknowledge that when it was widely anticipated this would be published in November or December, that this substantial delay has led many to question why it is being withheld.

"One can only hope that this delay is because Highways England have realised the strength of feeling locally and concern with the options in their original form, and that they need the time to ensure they come back with a vastly improved online option that genuinely addresses the concerns raised by locals.

"We believe that calls by Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith to re -run the consultation will only yield the same conclusions, that the northern routes are undeliverable.

"The next step in the process is a further consultation on the preferred route, so the public can have confidence that there is a further opportunity to have their say again and influence the final scheme.

"Let's hope Highways England handle that better than they have the process to date."

The consultation, which ran from July until September last year, included five different options for improvement of the congested road. The options included building new slip roads and making improvements to junctions.

Chichester District Council joined West Sussex County Council's leader Louise Goldsmith in asking for the consultation to be completely re-run.

Groups urged to get applying for share of community cash COMMUNITY groups in South Chichester are being encouraged to apply for a share of £24,000.

The funding is being made available via the County Local Committee.

South Chichester County Local Committee has already donated more than £22,500 over the last during the current financial year to a variety of good causes.

The next round of applications will be considered at the last meeting of this financial year which take place on

Tuesday, March 14. Any unallocated funding will be rolled over to the next financial year.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, March 1 and they require the support of your local County Councillor.

Have your say PEOPLE are being encouraged to have their say on the West Sussex Minerals Plan.

The plan, which is jointly proposed

by West Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority, is currently up for public consultation.

City councillor Sarah Sharp, from Chichester Green Party, has raised some concerns about it.

She said: “The main environmental concerns relate to the sections of the plan which deal with the extraction of oil and gas in West Sussex.

"There is a clear conflict of interest as the plan accepts the national policy that oil and gas reserves must be developed ‘in the national interest’. However, the United Nations has stated that at least 80 per cent of the world’s reserves of fossil fuels should be left in the ground if we are to meet our climate change targets.”

Olympian joins in the fun as trampoline centre opens

Sally was guest of honour at the launch of the new £1.5m trampoline centre, which is located at Glenmore Business Park.

Children from hospice Chestnut Tree House were invited in for a private visit to be the first ones to try out the new centre along with their siblings.

Director of Flip Out Chichester, Richard Wootton, said: “It's been a bit of a journey but we are really pleased with the way it's ended up.

"There is something here for everybody.

From a teenager's point of view, which is our target audience, there is nothing like this in Chichester.

"It's a place for them to come out and keep fit, instead of sitting in front of the tv."

Sally Gunnell said: "This is just a great place, not just for the little kids but for big kids and their parents.

"It's a really good set-up and it's a lovely day out for the family."

Sally added that it was important for youngsters to get lots of exercise.

"We've got such an obesity problem.

This is about trying to get our kids physically active. It's about finding ways

of doing that.

"This is brilliant. It's not just about going for a run or playing football - you can come here.

"Physically, this is a good challenge for them."

Caitriona McDermott, 47, brought along her 16-year-old daughter, Charlotte, who has cerebral palsy. They live in Selsey.

She said: "It's nice to have something

like this around here. Normally we wouldn't be able to come in because there are lots of people jumping around you.

"This way we aren't stopping everybody from having fun. She absolutely loves it."

Bringing history to life at the Weald and Downland HALF-TERM at the Weald and Downland Living Museum in Singleton this week has allowed visitors to get involved with life and folklore of the past with a variety of fun, springthemed activities.

Inspired by the ancient legend of the Green Man who symbolised the coming of spring and regeneration, children and their families have been invited to take part in a range of arts and crafts, story-times and walking trails.

The Weald and Downland Museum is a unique setting for such events. Its assortment of rescued and restored historic buildings ranging from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Victorian age set in a 40-acre site within the beautiful South Downs make it a oneof-a-kind venue.

Their aim at the museum is to make history come alive as an effective way of sparking the interest of all its visitors.

Jenny Rudd who works at the museum explained why this is so important. She said: "We encourage visiting children to get to grips with the museum though making memories which gives history more meaning.

"Children can learn through touching the buildings and exhibits, trying historic food in the Tudor kitchen and working the hand-turned quern stones at the watermill."

The activities taking place this week are an example of how the team at the Weald and Downland are dedicated to providing the most hands-on and interesting experiences as possible.

Alongside the more conventional crafts taking place this week are other activities such as planting seeds as well

as skills of a bygone time like learning to weave a hazel hurdle fence and making corn dollies.

A popular activity so far has been the rag rugging. This involves pulling strips of material through a hessian backcloth to create a rug without the need for sewing or knotting. The children especially enjoyed being able to create something with their bare hands and without the need of assistance.

Out in the open families have been encouraged to enjoy the fresh air which at times this week has proved rather bracing - with the chance to take a ride in the museum's wagon pulled by trusty shire horse Mac. The various walking trails around the museum have proved to be an excellent way for families to enjoy the outside environment of the museum - as long as they have remembered to bring their welly boots!

Despite some of the less-than welcoming weather this week plenty of enthusiastic members of the public have paid the museum a visit.

Lucy Hockley, Cultural Engagement Manager at the museum, has been thrilled to see so many families taking part in their activities. She said: “We’re always delighted to see family groups of different generations enjoying themselves here by taking part in a range of hands-on activities and exploring the museum.

"It is great to see the enthusiasm and energy of our younger visitors across the site at the beginning of this season”.

A major influence on the hands-on element at the museum is due to the team's passion for the outdoors.

To further encourage involvement in outdoor activities the museum is currently linked to the South Downs Dark Skies Festival. This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the night sky while getting in touch with the great outdoors.

As the weather improves the team at the Weald and Downland hope that people will continue to visit them for several other events taking place throughout the year.

Mothering Sunday is set to be a busy time at the museum with the public invited to bring their mothers along for free and visit the new-born lambs at the on-site farm as well as to enjoy the surroundings in the improving spring weather.

The team at the museum are also hoping to improve the experience for future generations with renovations to their facilities this year. Two new play areas, a children’s garden, and a new café and visitor centre will be opening this spring. They are also creating two family hub buildings within the museum site and installing a gypsy wagon for children to play in.

` Work starts on fish and chip shop DEMOLITION work has begun to clear the site of a former fish and chip shop on Bognor Regis seafront.

Contractors started on Monday to begin removing the rubble left after a fierce blaze swept through the Beach Restaurant.

The popular site opposite the pier was wrecked by the fire which began at 3.47am on November 20.

Some 60 firefighters tackled the flames when they were at their fiercest. Fire crews stayed at the scene for just over 12 hours to make sure the blaze was fully extinguished.

Most of the damaged building was bulldozed to the ground in the following days.

The site between Waterloo Square and Norfolk Street has since remained fenced off for safety reasons while the wait continued for demolition work to start.

Graham's set for a full-time career as successful author

` Special day of prayer for women MEMBERS of churches across Bognor Regis will come together next week to join those around the world.

They will be taking part in the latest International Women's Day of Prayer.

The annual service is being held at 10am next Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Clarence Road.

It has been written by women in the Philippines and will be celebrated in 170 countries. A collection at the service will go to help charities in the Far East nation.

A DARK thriller is about to set Pagham author Graham Minett on course for a fulltime writing career - at the age of 65.

Graham's second paperback, Lie In Wait, is due to be published on March 9 under the name of GJ Minett after the success of his debut book.

The ebook version of his latest tale about a dead man and a missing woman has already sold 24,000 copies, to leave Graham hopeful of similar print success.

He said: "When my first book, The Hidden Legacy, was published in paperback, the sales of the ebook picked up again as well. I think people saw the publicity and thought they would rather spend £2.99 on the ebook than £7.99 on the paperback."

Lie In Wait features Owen Hall, who drives into a petrol station to let his passenger use its facilities. She never comes back - and it's possible she never even made it inside.

Nothing is what it seems and there are plenty of twists to keep readers turning the pages until the final chapter.

The success of his initial two books has seen Graham prepare to leave his job at Easter as the curriculum planner at The Angmering School.

"I always expected to retire about now," said. "But I never expected to be doing that to become a full-time author. I always wanted to be one but I never wanted to put myself out there and find out if I could be published."

Graham, of Sea Lane, had a literary agent for a year when he was in his 20s but could

not find a publisher.

Completing a part-time MA in creative writing at the University of Chichester in 2008 was the turning point in his literary ambitions. Graham also won a writing competition the same year to show the potential for his skills.

Success in a 2010 competition for unpublished novels confirmed his talents and earned him contracts with an agent and the Bonnier publishing group.

His entry in the contest became the opening chapter of The Hidden Legacy. It was an immediate success as an ebook.

Since it was released in November, 2015, it has sold 20,000 electronic copies and around 20,000 of the paperback version.

Major retailers like Asda and WH Smith and WH Smith Travel pre-ordered 13,000 print copies.

"There's a whole community of bloggers and reviewers out there and they picked up on the ebook and this prompted the companies to stock the paperbook," said Graham. His growing army of fans will be pleased to know his third book is well underway. "I'm 40,000 words into it," Graham said. "I'm expecting it to be slightly shorter than the previous two, which were 120,000 words.

"I've got to complete the first draft by April 12 and I'm having to be very disciplined and write 1,000-1,200 words a day.

"I'm contracted to write a fourth book by April, 2018, but I will be home all the time to concentrate on writing for the first time."

Humble beginnings of ‘Sunny Selsey’ holiday park It all started in 1958 when the late Douglas Bunn bought 30 acres of land from his father.

Rationing was over and there was a rush to the coast as people sought a seaside holiday.

Douglas did something that was quite revolutionary in its day – he applied for, and won, planning permission to use the land for Holiday Caravans.

During this time, caravan sites were generally little more than a field with a toilet block in one corner and a shower block in another and many local authorities were anti-caravans.

Nevertheless Douglas had an entrepreneurial streak that saw great potential in this unspoilt stretch of coastline – so unspoilt, in fact, that Hitler himself had planned to land his troops at Selsey because it was so undeveloped.

Douglas came to the caravan trade in a roundabout way. He grew up in Selsey and won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied History and Law, to later become a barrister.

At the age of 30, whilst practising as a barrister, he put his money into both the caravan business, and an Equestrian business.

And so, 58 years ago, The White Horse Caravan Company was born.

With the completion of a shop, office and club house in 1959, The White Horse Caravan Park was ready to capture the post-war boom in holidays.

Around the same time, Douglas approached the owners of a local farm – Mill Farm – and in 1960 added the land,

the iconic Medmerry Windmill and a mile of beachfront to his holdings.

This was to become West Sands.

Green Lawns, an already established Park, was added in 1968 and the purpose-built touring and camping facility known as Warner Farm Touring Park was developed in 1990.

Together, these parks formed the basis of the 300 acres of holiday village which exist today – one of the biggest holiday parks in Europe, in fact.

In the past half century, generations of families, many of them from the Portsmouth area, have made the trip to this sunny peninsular on the south coast to enjoy a memorable seaside break.

A flick through Bunn Leisure’s brochures from yesteryear shows how caravanning holidays have changed – and how some things never go out of fashion!

The brochure for 1964 includes a picture of a family enjoying a cup of tea from PG Tips and an advert for LyonsMaid Ice Cream.

The general park information includes a note about the toilets and showers: “These are, without doubt, the finest you will find anywhere”.

Pony and donkey rides are advertised close to the amusement fair at West Sands and the brochure reads: “The animals are well cared for by a benevolent gentleman named Mr John Lockwood who devotes the proceeds to the Animals Home of Rest”.

The ‘Teenage Jivery’ is open daily from 10am to 11.30pm and there’s an afternoon sing-song with Uncle Mick

and Uncle Keith in the ballroom every Sunday afternoon.

On a Sunday morning, holidaymakers are invited to ‘Howzat!’ – a grand cricket match for all ages.

Fast forward to 1970 and the guide features a blonde-haired mermaid on the front cover.

The opening pages feature a letter from the late John Bunn – Douglas’ older brother and the then managing director, welcoming holidaymakers to ‘Sunny Selsey’.

His letter states: “Visitors are always surprised at the astonishingly low cost of a holiday with us, compared with regimented holiday camps.

“A holiday with us is basically selfcatering which gives you the tremendous advantage of being absolutely free to do what you wish during your precious days of leisure.”

The brochure advertises the ‘Harness Room Discotheque’ – which has been “re-equipped to keep pace with growing demand and modern popularity”.

Bicycles, radios, deck chairs and push chairs can all be hired from the hire shop. You can even hire a complete set of bed linen for the family – but “21 days’ notice is required for this”.

John Bunn, the current managing director and the second generation of the family-run business, reflected: “ It is wonderful to look back on what was offered all those years ago, the core of which remains unchanged! A Luxury Caravan Holiday Park offers far more freedom to its visitors and guests than its competitors. ”

Heritage put on show at parish church

HISTORY is going on display at Pagham's church this weekend to give the building a future.

An open afternoon is taking place from 3pm to 6pm on Sunday at St Thomas a'Becket Church to explore its heritage and the past of the surrounding area.

Entry to the event will be by donation to the church's ÂŁ250,000 Raise The Roof appeal to fund major repair works to the Grade I listed structure.

Several dozen exhibits and items about the history of the church and its community will be on show.

The church's vicar, the Rev Mark Eminson, said: "Do come along to learn more about things such as Pagham in the First World War or personal stories from those whose family connections here go back several generations, or again to see our 17th century Bible or the picture of Queen Mary after worship - while King George V was convalescing in Pagham, not Bognor.

"We hope this will be the first in a series of events over the coming years as, with a new roof, we can responsibly and safely house both the human and material

treasure of this church and parish."

St Thomas a'Becket Church, in Church Lane, dates from some 800 years ago and is one of the oldest in the Bognor Regis area. It stands on a site used for worship since Saxon times.

A Norman font and a bell cast in 1066 are testament to its lengthy past.

But the church's age means Mr Eminson and his worshippers face probably its biggest project to replace tiles which have begun to fall off the roof.

The gables at each end of the nave have disintegrated and water has seeped in and penetrated the walls below.

Raise The Roof has raised some ÂŁ35,000 from residents and worshippers since Mr Eminson launched it last September. A bid for Heritage Lottery Fund backing of about ÂŁ200,000 has also been made.

"Heritage is an interesting concept," he said. "Although each generation understandably can think it is the brightest and the best, there is usually also a sense of building on the good foundations of our forebears.

"In a more domestic sense, many of us have compiled our family histories and genealogies and programmes and other material related to our sense of identity and connections to the past are very popular."

FINAL customers will be served at a popular hospital shop this weekend.

The Friends of Chichester Hospitals will be closing its outlet in the main entrance of St Richard's Hospital at 4pm tomorrow.

The closure has been brought about by the hospital's operating trust to allow the site to be redeveloped by Compass Group for a new retail shop.

A replacement outlet for the Friends is being created in the outpatient entrance area but it is unlikely to be ready for several weeks.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said the delay was disappointing but the charity planned to maintain its vital ward trolley service even if it was on a smaller scale than usual.

Because of reduced storage space, the interim service will be run with newspapers, some magazines, toiletries, tissues, drinks and bottles of squash, biscuits, mints, gums and a selection of snacks.

A newspaper round will run at weekends at the request of wards.

"Our dedicated volunteers will continue to bring newspapers and goodies to the wards and look forward to continuing their strong relationship with patients and staff," said Mrs Ramage.

She praised the volunteers for their work to ensure the trolley could continue.

"The Friends are very grateful for the support the shop has received over the last 20 years from patients and staff as well as visitors," she added. "We have striven to provide a service second to none."

The Year 12 students on the health and social care team carried out a collegewide health campaign about illegal drugs aimed at students across all the year groups.

Different forms were encouraged to visit the colourful and prominent display in the main college walkway throughout a week. It featured facts about MDMA, cocaine, cannabis and heroin among its information. Leaflefts were distributed to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils.

All those involved also took part in an interactive quiz held within form sessions.

The health and social care students who fronted the campaign were on hand to support and answer any questions.

Three of those who organised the initiative were Lauren Jones, Rebecca McCivor and Hayley Moses, pictured above left to right.

Lauren said: "We were really pleased with the response we received. We engaged with students in all year groups throughout the week and definitely feel they, and us, learnt lots."

Rebecca said: "Researching the effects some drugs can have - both short and long term - was really interesting."

effective information to put on the leaflets.

"It was great to see so many taking part in the campaign and we hope it has educated students on the dangers of recreational drugs."

A LACK of facts has seen housing plans for Yapton refused planning permission.

Arun District Council has rejected the latest outline proposal for up to 100 homes on land south of Ford Lane and east of North End Road for four reasons.

Its planning consultant, David Innes, said in a report: "While the principle for residential development would be acceptable, it is essential that the council does not approve development that has not fully considered other policy matters.

"In this case, there are objections from Highways England and WSCC on the lack of an update to the traffic assessment, a need for consideration of noise from the adjacent Orchard Business Park and the council's arboriculturist has requested revisions to the tree survey as the calculations are flawed.

"Despite requests to the agent to

provide updated information, this was not provided. Therefore, the application must be recommended for refusal on lack of crucial information."

An undertaking from the developer, Keith Langmead Ltd, was also unacceptable, said Mr Innes. It failed to fully take into account the need to pay for public services used by those who will live in the proposed housing.

Keith Langmead Ltd wants to use 3.4 hectares of a 6.7ha field for the dwellings.

The rest of the land will be public open space and landscaping. Objections to the scheme were received by Arun from 141 households and Yapton Parish Council.

This was the third plan for the site.

The first was rejected by Arun in March, 2014, and the next that October. This was allowed on appeal but the government's secretary of state dismissed the appeal.

Half-term fun all round NEW ACTIVITIES and friendships were abundant at half-term workshops held at the Regis Centre on Wednesday.

Organised by charity group Family Support Work, the aim of this fun-packed day was to get families involved in activities together, as well as introducing children to new skills and games while making friends.

During the morning, children were delighted to find a whole range of different activities to choose from. These included making loom bands and creating jewellery using beads, colouring, making peppermint creams and creating adorable cress heads.

After lunch, further arts and crafts were available, such as making fridge magnets, using play dough and making cards.

FSW volunteers Jacqui Herrington and John Child estimated that around 70 children attended the event, accompanied by their parents, who were encouraged to join in with the activities. Jacqui said: "We want to promote the idea that parents should enjoy playtime with their children, something the kids really love."

As well as the inclusion of parents, the children were able to spend time with their siblings and children of other ages.

John explained that this benefits the children.

He said: "The children make lots of good friends while here from different age groups who they would not meet elsewhere."

FSW holds events like this throughout the year. Every first Monday of the month they host an after-school club at St Wilfrid's Church in Bognor Regis. Many of the children attend these regularly and the volunteers get to see how this helps their growth as individuals.

John added "It's great to see how these kids develop in confidence due to these events."

It is not just the volunteers who can see the benefits of their work. Parent Louise explained why she brought her children to the workshops.

She said: "The FSW is amazing. The support they

offer is incredible, I'd be lost without them."

Her son, Jackson, aged seven, enjoyed the arts and crafts. He said: "I liked making the cress head the best because I can go home and eat it."

All of the children were enthusiastic about the activites on offer. Nine-year-old Isaac said: "I loved the board games and decorating. I also liked making new friends."

One of his new friends, Heather, aged 12, said: "I liked the cooking activities, and I hope I will know the friends I've made here for a long time."

FSW asked for a ÂŁ1 donation for each child attending in order to cover the costs of the day.

However, the priorites of the volunteers was to allow parents and their children to enjoy the activities together as well as raising awareness for the work they do.

` Sun supplies power for homes in area SOLAR power proposed around the Bognor Regis area can create enough energy for more than one in five homes.

A report by Arun District Council reveals the number of solar parks which have received planning permission to take advantage of the town's famed sunshine record.

The document states: "According to this report, using stated figures, Arun produces 54.6MW of power.

"This powers a minimum of 5,460 homes but, using the official Ofgem calculation, it powers 16,380 homes.

Using the housing data provided by the district council, this means that Arun has the capacity to provide 22.25 per cent of its homes using solar generated power."

A megawatt is stated as powering 100300 homes, says the report, to provide the variation in the numbers. Ofgem's figures are also used for the amount of energy used by an average household.

The solar farms around Bognor Regis given planning permission are at: Park Farm, Pagham; Barnham Court, Barnham; Lower Farm, Walberton; north of the A259, Yapton; Manor Farm, North Bersted; Bowley Farm, Pagham; and Drove Lane Farm in Yapton.

The details are included in the Arun local planning authority's monitoring report for the year to last April presented to councillors last week.

Weather fails to dampen trade SIXMONTHS of serving in all weathers has been marked by a Bognor Regis seafront business.

Coffee Cup's four staff members at its kiosk on the promenade have experienced the full range of British weather since it opened last August opposite Albert Road.

Area manager Tommy Parsons said opening every day, except Christmas Day, matched the practice at the firm's three other locations.

"Sales have been steady and we have been delighted with the customers' positive feedback, even turning a couple of the protesters into regular friends of the kiosk.

"People come along to us because

they know we will be open regardless of the weather, rain or shine," he said.

"They say they would rather do that than go somewhere else and find it is closed.

"We are proud to be the only kiosk sustaining regular opening hours on the seafront and are, slowly but surely, building a regular customer base with some fantastic Bognor Regis locals. On a typical Saturday in February, we would expect to serve 30-40 people here."

The kiosk was given planning approval

by Arun District Council last June after the initial proposal was refused amid objections from some nearby residents.

The kiosk is managed by Bryony Hurdle and the team leader is Ainhoa Ansa-McIntyre.

CRICKETERS have been given permission to replace their arson-hit pavilion in Bognor Regis.

The Aldwick Cricket Club members received the good news from Arun District Council.

They had applied for the replacement building before their previous one was wrecked by an arsonist a month ago.

Their online appeal for £10,000 to help the club continue had raised more than £7,829 by Wednesday from 136 supporters with five days to go.

Arun planning officer Simon Davis said the pavilion in the south west corner of playing fields at Brooks Lane would have two changing rooms, a kitchen and a raised veranda.

"The previous facilities supported the use of the adjacent playing field and it is considered that their replacement will be beneficial to the use of the playing fields by local people," he says in his report.

"The building would appear as a pavilion and is not of an unexpected design for a sportsfield location. It is of an improved design to the previous version."

The pavilion will measure 12.5m X 4.6m with a height of 3.2m.

As part of the permission, Mr Davis has said the pavilion's floor levels need to be built at least 1.95m above mean sea level because of the risk of flooding.

The council also wants to approve all materials and finishes for external walls and roof before building work starts above ground.

To help with this, recently, the home saw major refurbishments taking place with three rooms built to provide accommodation for more residents. Two of these rooms are currently available and have yet to be lived in.

The well-being and happiness of the patients is really the priority at Summerley, though. With a packed activity programme including gardening, films and creative workshops, there’s something for everyone at the home.

They hold two activities every day to ensure everyone is having as much fun as possible. Their most popular activities are Craig’s Hour of Fun, which includes music, exercising, singing and poetry and Sharon’s Reminiscences in which residents and day care patients travel back to a specific time in history with the use of storytelling and music.

Sharon, who provides the reminiscing experience, is extremely fond of working at Summerley. She said: “It is a very warm and friendly atmosphere at Summerley.

What I really love is seeing the residents’ well-being. They are always happy and keen to join in with my work which says

a lot.”

Summerley's location also provides opportunities for more activities for the residents. Every week they take a trip to the beach, weather permitting, and they are involved with trips out and about whether to the shops or to church. At Christmas, they make sure everyone has the chance to go to the local pantomime.

Cost-cutting wines at the Co-operative Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

I VENTURED to some of the local smaller Co-operative stores this week in order to avail myself of their offer of fifteen per cent off any four bottles or more.

At the lower price end I espied an old favourite, namely the 2016 Signal Post Chardonnay at an offer price of £4.99 reducing to a mere £4.24 if one of four. This wine has subtle melon and apple flavours balanced with peach sweetness and a refreshing finish and the four per cent of Viognier makes all the difference by giving it added creaminess - at this price a wine not to overlook!

These smaller franchises also occasionally clear certain lines, so I elected to try the 2016 Arcoiris Chilean Chardonnay, 'arcoiris' being Spanish for rainbow, and noted how clean it was on the palate , being fresh and zesty with citrus, apple and mango flavours to the fore. The two pound reduction to £5.99 recedes to just £5.10 if one of four and is worthy of your attention!

My tertiary selection was a McGuigan wine, an Australian brand synonymous with quality, and The Borders Chardonnay

at a reduced £6 price tag, if one of four, is part of a newish range produced using specially selected grapes from where the regional borders of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria meet. This particular wine is refreshingly clean on the palate with citrus, peach and apricot flavours to the fore . A good apéritif or summer wine, à mon avis!

My final white choice was a Peter Zealands 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from a producer renowned for his leading-edge green technologies and carbon-neutral winery priced at a reduced £6 99 which, if part of four, plummets to a mere £5.90 - a snip for this well-crafted wine! Ripe notes of passion fruit and guava pervade this wine which culminates in a crisp, mineral finish. At this price a veritable no-brainer!

However, if mild extravagance be your wont, look no further than the Lanson Black Label currently on offer, if indeed part of four bottles or more, at a mouthwatering £21.25 with its fine stream of persistent bubbles, hint of toast and straw tones of Pinot Noir and bouquet of ripe fruits and citrus - a proper Champagne to savour!

In terms of red wines, a Casillero del Diablo 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, inspired a sense of devilment in me to effect purchase thereof at a discounted price, if one of four bottles, of a mere £5.10.

The devil on the label belies the fact that this wine oozes cassis and black cherry flavours with hints of coffee and dark chocolate and complements red meat admirably.

my attention, namely the 2015 McGuigan Black Label Shiraz, a wine bursting with flavour and reduced to a mere £5.80, if part of four bottles or more. Ripe plum , blackberry jam and spice with hints of vanilla and pepper are exuded in this smooth, full-bodied classic Australian Shiraz which I wholeheartedly recommend to you !

My final selection came from the bargain basement rack at Co-op in the form of a 2011 Baron De Ley Rioja Reserva reduced to a mere seven pounds, further reducing to £6, if part of four, and ruby red in colour, also aged for twenty months in new oak casks and matured in bottle.

This wine is one to seek out with its seductive nuances of spices and after taste of red fruits. Baron de Ley is a winery founded in 1985 by a small group of prestigious Rioja professionals who modelled themselves on the Médoc châteaux thus refining the art of wine making! My vin de la semaine!

Method

INGREDIENTS • 250g (8oz) baby new potatoes, halved • 2-3 sprigs mint (optional) • 8 rashers streaky bacon (rinds removed), cut into 2cm squares • 220g (7½oz) cherry tomatoes on the vine • 3tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 Romaine lettuce heart, leaves washed and separated • 2 ripe avocados, peeled and sliced • 2 cooked chicken breasts • handful fresh basil leaves

Preheat the over to gas 6, 200˚C, fan 180˚C. Drizzle the chicken breasts with olive oil. Bake for 20-25 mintues, until completely cooked and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted.

Half fill a large saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add the potatoes and mint sprigs, if using.

Cook for 15 minutes until potatoes are tender.

While the potatoes are cooking, heat a little of the oil in large frying pan and cook the bacon for 3-4 minutes until crisp. Drain on kitchen paper.

Return the pan to the heat.

Snip each vine of tomatoes in half and cook for 6 minutes over a low heat, turning once, until just soft.

Remove and set aside. Put the remaining olive oil and balsamic vinegar into the

warm frying pan, and stir until warmed through.

Drain the potatoes and put half in a bowl to let cool.

Arrange the lettuce leaves over four plates and divide the potatoes between each.

Place the sliced avocado and chicken on top, along with the bacon.

Pop a short vine of warm tomatoes on top of each, scatter over the basil leaves and drizzle with a little warm dressing from the pan. Season with pepper and serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS For the base • 500g/1lb 2oz frozen summer fruit (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants work well) • 50g/2oz caster sugar, or more to taste • 2 tbsp blackcurrant or raspberry liqueur (cassis or Chambord) • 500ml/18fl oz cloudy apple juice • 5 sheets leaf gelatine • 250g/9oz madiera cake

For the custard • 250g/9oz mascarpone • 500ml/18floz ready-made vanilla custard

For the topping • 300ml/½ pint whipping cream • handful toasted almonds or hazelnuts, to serve

Berry Trifle Method Put the fruit into a saucepan, add the sugar, then cook gently until the sugar has dissolved and the liquid is slightly syrupy.

Remove half of the berries and juice to a bowl, stir in a tablespoon of cassis, then set aside to cool.

Add the apple juice to the fruit in the pan, and bring to a simmer. Taste the fruit, and add a little more sugar if necessary. Remove from the heat, and add the remaining cassis.

Soak the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water for five minutes, until soft and floppy. Lift the gelatin from the water and squeeze out the excess liquid.

Add the gelatine to the fruit in the pan and stir until it has completely dissolved.

Remove from the heat, and transfer the jelly mix to a bowl. Allow to cool, then chill

Cut the madeira cake into 1cm/½in slices. Give the fruity jelly a stir - it should be softly set. Layer the cake, jelly, fruit and juice in the bottom of a trifle dish (roughly 20cm/8in diameter).

For the custard layer, put the mascarpone into a large bowl then add the custard.

Whisk together until creamy and smooth. Spoon the custard over the fruit and sponge.

Whip the cream until soft peaks form when you remove the whisk from the mixture.

Spoon the cream over the top of the trifle, starting from the outside and working in.

This will avoid the cream sinking into the custard.

Chill the trifle for an hour before serving.

Finish with a scattering of toasted almonds.

Cumin is the spice of life for good skin I DON'T wish to gloat, but I find myself writing my column this week sitting by a pool in Dubai.

Yes!! Some winter sun has hit the spot! I love it here, so glamorous and gorgeous, and almost guaranteed sun! Our first few days were a little cloudy, but it allowed us to explore the city more.

Among many other things, we managed to go up the tallest structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa, standing at 829.8 metres high. If you don’t like heights, it’s maybe not for you. I found myself slightly holding on to the internal wall like it was my best friend for a while!

We also met up with some old friends who showed us the more traditional ‘out of town areas’, which was lovely and allowed us to get a real sense of the ‘local life’.

We visited so many incredible restaurants, but one of my favourites was a little spit and sawdust restaurant for the locals, and the flavours and foods were exquisite.

I was trying to pick my favourite flavours, which I found so hard as it was all so tasty. One of the spices they are very heavy with in their traditional cooking is cumin.

Cumin seeds play an important part in Mexican, Indian, Middle Eastern, North Africa and western Chinese cuisines. Cumin seeds

will help to remove the toxins from your body, therefore giving your skin a healthier appearance.

In order to treat acne or pimples, you just need to mix cumin seed powder with sufficient amount of apple cider vinegar to create a consistent paste and then apply this paste on your face for ten minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

It also helps prevent premature ageing signs such as wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots.

Secondly, if you have poor digestion, you should add cumin powder in your meal or drink cumin seed solution. Cumin seeds aid in the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, which play the important role in both proper digestion, and nutrient absorption.

Plus they can stimulate salivary glands and ensure the proper digestion of food. Cumin can act as the natural carminative, which makes cumin become the ideal treatment for gas formation! (No more embarrassing breaking wind!)

Thirdly, it helps prevent the common cold. It is advisable to drink cumin seed tea in order to protect your body from various viral infections.

The possible reason may be that cumin contains anti-microbial and antiseptic effects.

These helpful properties also boost the immunity of your body. The warm nature of cumin is beneficial for your respiratory organs, and as a result, it will prevent the mucus formation.

Because cumin is rich in iron and vitamin C, it will keep the common cold, as well as various infections, at bay. The symptoms associated with

common cold and flu-like cough and sore throat are also improved when you take cumin seeds with hot water, basil leaves, and honey.

Fourthly, it helps increase your memory because it releases acetylcholine in the brain, which plays the important role in retaining memory.

Cumin can act as an antioxidant, which boosts your memory. If people with amnesia include cumin powder in their daily meal, they have a far speedier recovery.

Fifthly, cumin can help you to relax and feel happy! Cumin is loaded with B vitamins, which can help reduce stress and improve sleep.

Scientists have found out that essential oils in cumin will make people reach a deeper, more beneficial sleep.

If you are experiencing sleep deprivation or you feel it’s hard to fall asleep, you just need to consume cumin along with a ripe banana before bedtime. Cumin is effective in keeping various stresses at bay and can give you a significant feeling of calmness and anxiety relief.

Lastly, but by no means least, cumin is loaded with essential oils and antioxidants, which stimulate the secretion of anti-carcinogenic enzymes and inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Limonene and eugenol in cumin contain strong anti-tumour effects. As a result, it is suggested in the health world that it could possibly help keep breast, colon, stomach and liver cancer at bay.

A COUNTY councillor has taken on the role of championing armed forces around West Sussex.

Debbie Kennard, who represents Shoreham, has become the county council's new military champion. She has taken over the position from Cllr Nigel Peters, the member for Arundel and Wick, who became the first in the role in 2015.

Cllr Kennard said: "We all owe a debt of gratitude to serving and former members of the armed forces. Nigel has done a fantastic job championing the military and I will work hard to raise the profile locally."

The county council is proud of its work to champion the armed forces and is signed up to the Armed Forces Community Covenant to ensure service personnel are fully integrated into their communities and promote understanding of issues which affect the military.

County council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith said: "Nigel has been a fantastic military champion and, on behalf of the council, I would like to thank him for his sterling work in really embedding the military covenant here in West Sussex.

"I would also like to thank Debbie for taking up the baton to ensure that commitment continues. I am incredibly proud of the military covenant we have in West Sussex which is regarded as one of the best in the country."

Cllr Peters said: "I have been encouraged and delighted by the tremendous support I have had from the council itself and all those people outside of the council with whom I have come into contact and who wish to fulfil the aim of the covenant."

He added he was proud to have helped to form the West Sussex Civilian Military Partnership Board to bring together representatives from a wide range of organisations.

ARUN WELLBEING will be running a free cookery course to help give confidence to nervous residents around Bognor Regis.

The Cook and Eat course will take place from 4pm to 6pm from next Thursday at Bersted Park Community Centre in Lakeland Avenue, North Bersted. It will run for six sessions and participants will learn how to cook healthy, affordable meals from scratch.

Dear Sir, I am sure that most people, like me, were appalled at the information you highlighted in last week’s edition (February 17) that Southern Water has discharged untreated or mashed sewage into Pagham Harbour 55 times since 2011. Each of these cases was logged with the Environment Agency.

Many questions arise immediately : how could no action have been taken over the past six years (as a minimum)? Have the Environment Agency and Southern Water no responsibility for the health and wellbeing of the resident communities and holiday-makers they are intended to serve, as well as the preservation and maintenance of Pagham Harbour as an RSPB Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an internationally designated Ramsar wetlands site?

Finally, a question of most pressing urgency at present: development plans envisage 1,300 new homes being forced on Pagham. In support of the planning applications, Southern Water have indicated that there is sufficient sewerage capacity at Pagham Waste Water Treatment Works, which is obviously a complete misrepresentation of the facts. Is it therefore the intention of the Environment Agency/Southern Water to continue to discharge into Pagham Harbour the additional volume of human waste which would be produced by no fewer than 2,600 new residents?

This must surely be as unthinkable as the traffic chaos the developments would engender.

A FURTHER half a million pounds has been made available to help communities protect themselves from flooding.

West Sussex County Council has put the extra cash into the continuation of its award-winning Operation Watershed initiative.

Any community or voluntary group can apply during 2017/18.

Bids are assessed on how they directly benefit a community, their level of community support and value for money.

The additional funding was given as the county council landed a prestigious national award at The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport. (ADEPT) The ceremony brought local authorities across the country together to celebrate work in communities.

Operation Watershed was crowned the winner in the category for meaningful devolution for all communities around the UK. Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "I am delighted the hard work of our Operation Watershed team was recognised with this award.

"There was a good number of nominations up for this particular award, so for Operation Watershed to win is a credit to the fantastic work the county council has done to engage and empower our communities to become more resilient against flooding."

The initiative has provided £3m in grants to community projects around West Sussex in the past four years.

It helped set up 23 flood action groups, grew closer relationships between communities and flood authorities and gave towns and parishes a greater say in how flood resilience is managed in their areas.

Old hospital played a central part in the war you letter to the hospital and on the first Sunday afterwards attend church and give thanks for the hospital.

Patients could be discharged when not fully recovered for bad behaviour. For example, one man disguised himself as a woman to gain access to the women’s ward.

Dr Forbes was interested in medical research and promoted Renee Laennec’s listening device, the stethoscope.

By 1838, more space was required and so a wing was added with another 20 beds, a gift from Charles Dixon - a local landowner.

In 1840, Forbes had left the Infirmary on an appointment as physician to the Queen’s household.

A Brewhouse was built in 1851, as beer was given to patients as it was considered safer than water to drink.

This was discontinued in 1872. From the 1860s, the Infirmary began to experience a revolution in surgical techniques.

In 1967, to enable further developments, the interior of the building was altered, giving more space between beds.

An ‘operations room’ was provided in 1869 allowing Mr Skaife to perform what were then innovative surgeries.

In 1879 a children’s ward was opened. The following year, ward kitchens were provided.

In the early 1900s, the hospital was entirely remodelled and officially re-opened in 1913

by King George V who conferred the title

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum IN 1784, the Rev William Walker, rector of St Pancras and Rumboldswyke parishes, joined forces with Dr Thomas Sanden to found the Chichester Dispensary, mainly for outpatients in some cottages off the Broyle Road.

By 1822, it had become apparent that with the city’s increasing population a larger purpose-built medical institute was required.

In 1826 the West Sussex, East Hampshire and Chichester General Infirmary and Dispensary, as it was known, opened with 40 beds.

Dr Forbes, a doctor with a local practice, was appointed as its first superintendent.

The first matron was a Mrs Rogers. She retired in 1857 after 30 years’ service.

It is believed the Wisteria, which grew on the façade of the hospital, was received by Mrs Rogers as a gift from China.

It is believed to be the oldest in Britain and was given official protection in 1995.

Mrs Rogers’ two successors were in post for less than a year being dismissed for serious misconduct.

Dr Forbes had three Spartan rules (i) Patients in beds in the ward were not permitted to drink alcohol, especially not gin, (ii) Patients in bed in the ward were not permitted to smoke and (iii) Patients weren’t allowed visitors - not even on Christmas Day. Patients who were admitted had to agree that when discharged, whether fully recovered or not, they were to write a thank-

‘Royal’ on the hospital.

During the First World War, due to the hospital's proximity to Portsmouth, it was expected that the war wounded from the battlefields in France would be received at the hospital.

However, the first contingency of 30 men arrived with very little prior notice. On October 27, 1914, the hospital secretary arranged a fleet of 21 cars to transport the soldiers from Chichester railway station to the hospital.

By 1915, 50 of the available 110 beds were occupied by wounded soldiers.

In the inter-war period, fundraising for the hospital continued, which allowed small-scale expansion of the hospital's facilities.

In 1940, 200 additional beds were added to the Royal West Sussex Hospital in the form of five hutted wards built as part of the regional Emergency Bed Service.

The huts were still in use as wards in the 1970s.

The Battle of Britain caused an influx of wounded servicemen.

At this time, the hospital's nurses were reinforced by the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment.

During the Second World War, nurses and convalescent servicemen were employed in haymaking in Oaklands Park across the road.

The hospital continued to be used into the early 1990's.

However, after experiencing financial crisis, the hospital closed in 1995 and the building was sold to property developer Croudace Homes for conversion in to flats, located in what is now called Forbes Place within the grounds of King George Gardens.

Blues earn rest week after they give PostSport table-topping Tonbridge a real scare CHICHESTER head off into a week off with a lot to think about - with the Blues targeting a big push to preserve their league status this year.

Rob Lawrence's side have been muchimproved since Christmas, stringing together three wins in a row to drag themselves clear of the drop zone in National League 3 London and South East.

But after winning three in a row, the Blues' charge has been halted in the last fortnight, first with a 21-12 loss away at Southend.

Then Chi were taught a rugby lesson, losing 47-17 to a very impressive Tonbridge Juddians, who are still top of the table.

That result keeps the Blues 11th and, with no game this weekend, Lawrence's side will want to rest up ahead of a trip to the suburbs of Southend to take on ninth-place Westcliff Speaking after the match, Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "In the first half of this game Chichester made the league leaders seem vulnerable and rather ordinary.

"But after a very stern lecture by their coaches, TJs showed their professional strength and skill to win comfortably.

"The Kent squad will almost certainly win

automatic promotion and should hold their own in National 2."

Chi were quick out of the blocks - slotting over four penalties to take a 12-0 lead.

But that only stirred Tonbridge into action and the Kent side notched two penalties and an unconverted try to close the gap to just one point at the break.

After receiving a rollicking from their coaches, TJs emerged with a clear game plan Their tactics were clear: win the battle up front, drive regularly with front foot ball and spin quickly to the wings as close to the try line as possible.

It paid off as a wave of attacks brought the visitors three further tries to secure a bonus point and take them into a 33-12 lead.

Chichester at last managed to get to the other end and Jack Bentall started a lineout drive which was touched down by Henry Anscombe. This consolation was short-lived as a fifth try was scored following fine inter passing by TJs. The last nail in the coffin was a 5 metre scrum which the visitors forced forward to win a penalty try.

The final result of 47-17 was no disgrace for Chi. All focus now shifts to the trip to Westcliff.

KEEN darts players are being urged to sign up to a summer of sport in Bognor.

Tonight, the Bognor Friday Summer Darts League will hold their AGM and team registration for the forthcoming league. It will start at 7pm at the Newtown Social Club in Greencourt Drive. All are welcome.

f Itchenor's RS200 Open Day is set to take place in July

IT'S SAILS away for one of the area's busiest sailing clubs with the busy season packing in renowned regattas, top tournaments and family fixtures.

Itchenor Sailing Club was founded in 1927 and its boats have bobbed up and down on the waters of Chichester Harbour ever since.

Entering into its 90th season, highlights include the Mirror Open (May 13-14), Points Week (June 12-16) and the RS200 Open Day (July 8-9).

Other highlights include the annual Oxford v Cambridge Varsity Match which will visit the area for its centenary race - just the sixth time Itchenor has played host since the trophy's inception in 1912.

The club will also schedule its Junior Fortnight for July 31 to August 13 to coincide with the start of the summer holidays.

Packed with sailing and social events, the event supported by jbA Architecture offers two weeks of fun, learning and competitive sailing for young sailors aged eight to 18.

The Schools Week Championships is another regular junior event at the club that sees students come from across the UK to compete. The RS Feva XL event on June 25-29 is aimed at competitors in school years 7 to 10. The second part of the week is occupied by older students, culminating in two days of racing.

The season will conclude with a bang as the club hosts its annual celebrations for Bart’s Bash on September 17. This will see Itchenor play its part in raising money for Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, the charity set up in 2013 to honour the life and legacy of the Great British Olympic medalist.

For those interested in getting involved in sailing, the club will once again be holding an Open Day on May 7 to enable potential new members to go along and experience class racing as well as go out on the water in a range of vessels.

Pagham turn to plastic in bid to end painful three-game run

PAGHAM are turning to plastic as the Lions look to get their season back on track.

Officials at Nyetimber Lane had high hopes for a promotion push and cup success this term. But Mark Bennett's side have had a terrible fortnight, losing three times, which included an injury-time defeat in the semifinal of the RUR Cup. That curse of late-goals struck again on Saturday, when Pagham were condemned to a 2-1 defeat at home to Arundel.

Joe Shelley's penalty had brought Bennett's side level - but the visitors' Harry Russell popped up in the last minute to ensure the relegation contenders took all three points.

With the Nyetimber Lane side now sitting fifth in the league, all hopes of a late push for promotion look like a long shot.

That means Tuesday night's match against Langney Wanderers in the semi-final of the Peter Bentley cup on the 3G pitch at Steyning (7.30pm) has extra importance now.

First, though, is a run-out on the plastic pitch at Lancing in the league tomorrow (3pm), which will give the Lions a chance to get to grips with the unfamiliar surface.

IT WAS supposed to be a season of consolidation and building towards a promotion push next season.

But Chichester City find themselves in the middle of a title challenge - and with just ten games to go, the Lillywhites could go top of the SCFL Premier tomorrow.

Miles Rutherford's have been ruthlessly efficient all season, last being unbeaten in the league at the start of September.

That run has lifted them to third, level with Haywards Heath and two points behind Shoreham, who visit Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

The visiting Musselmen were the last side to beat Chi in the league, winning 3-1 in the reverse fixture. That was nearly six months ago.

At the time Shoreham had a double digit points lead on the rest of the division.

But since then Chi have put together an unbeaten streak of 22 games in the league.

The latest in that run was a 3-0 win away at Wick on Saturday.

With the hosts fighting for

their lives at the bottom end of the table, Chi knew they would be in for a hard contest.

But an early goal for leading scorer Scott Jones, his 17th goal of the season.

Jack Lee then added a second on the half hour mark.

Wick had a good chance to peg one back before the break but Andrew Chick blasted over.

Into the second period and Chi dominated - getting their just desserts when on-loan Bognor midfielder Lorenzo Dolcetti rounded off the scoring.

It means Rutherford's side go into their next match in high spirits, having netted 15 times in the last four games.

Shoreham, on the other hand, come to Oaklands short on confidence, having suffered a surprise 4-1 hammering away at relegation-threatened Hassocks on Tuesday night.

A Chi win, combined with Haywards Heath failing to win, will see the Lillywhites go top.

Those at the club may well be rueing why they did not apply for promotion to the Ryman South this season.

SELSEY look to have banished the winter blues, stringing together four wins in a row to kick off February.

Steve Bailey's side were sliding down the SCFL Division One after a poor Christmas period.

But all that seems like a long time ago now, after the Blues notched up their fourth win in a row with a 3-1 victory over Midhurst at the Bunn Leisure Stadium.

An early Joe Clarke strike gave them the lead.

After Selsey were pegged back, second half goals from Tom Groom and Clarke again secured the three points for Bailey's charges.

That lifts them to seventh in the league with the Blues still having up to five games in hand over the sides around them.

Next up is a trip to Brighton's Withdean Stadium to take on third-bottom AFC Varndeanians (3pm).

Selsey will be hoping for a repeat of the side's first meeting back in August when they

defeated the league new-boys 5-1, Lindon Miller scoring a hat-trick.

In the West Sussex Premier, Nyetimber Pirates continued their sensational form, with two 7-0 wins in the space of a week.

The first was in midweek against Wisborough Green, with Michael Frangou and Phil Turner both scoring twice.

Then the scoreline was repeated against Henfield on Saturday with Frangou again bagging a brace.

The Pirates return to league action tomorrow, welcoming TD Shipley to Bognor Sports Club (2pm) looking to make it 15 wins from 15 in the league.

Elsewhere, Predators travel to West Chiltington and Newtown Villa are on the road to Rogate 08.

Down the road, Hunston CC are due to host Lavant. But all thoughts will be focused on paying tribute to manager Stuart Hazelgrove.

The 31-year-old was playing five-a-side football with friends at Chichester College when he collapsed and died.

Mr Hazelgrove, who grew up in Yapton, became the first team manager for Hunston Community Football Club two seasons ago alongside his father, Michael.

Clubs across the area held a minute's silence in memory of the popular caravan engineer, who was a big Manchester United fan.

All thoughts are with his family at this time.

Sids' thoughts turn to Bosham title race SIDLESHAM face a true test of their title credentials tomorrow as the Sids travel to take on fourth placed Lancing United (2pm).

Daren Pearce's side have been playing catch-up all season as the Green and Golds chase down local rivals Bosham at the top of SCFL Division Two. They are currently in second, six points behind the Robins of Walton Lane but with a game in hand.

After both sides suffered surprise semi-final cup exits a fortnight ago, the Sids bounced back with an emphatic 12-0 win over bottom side Ferring last week.

Hat-tricks for both Dan Bassil and Tom Bayley, who is now the league's top scorer, mean they will go into the match against Lancing full of confidence.

Pearce will be hoping his side will take the goalscoring form into the match at Croshaw Ground against a side who have won four in a row and are five points behind.

Bosham, meanwhile, lost their second in a row, being edged out 4-3 at home to Jarvis Brook in the second round of the division two cup.

The Robins will have the chance to get back on track as they host Worthing Town Leisure tomorrow (2pm).

The visitors have only won one of their past five so Andy Probee's side will go into the match as firm favourites.

But they will need to rediscover the winning feeling, knowing any slip-up from now until the end of the season and their local rivals will be ready to pounce.

Rocks look to take three more points from long trip to Suffolk Next Game

IT'S FIRST versus third tomorrow as Bognor travel north to Suffolk to take on surprise promotion package Needham Market.

The Rocks are currently four points clear at the top of the Ryman Premier, with their hosts six points behind.

Bognor know a win over the Marketmen tomorrow (3pm) will maintain their stranglehold on the automatic promotion place as the end of the season nears.

The Rocks will be boosted after an excellent 2-0 win against Wingate & Finchley last weekend coincided with defeats to Needham and fellow promotion contenders Leiston.

And, despite a semi-final cup exit to Crawley in midweek, Bognor boss Jamie Howell says everyone in the Rocks camp is confident his side can check out of Suffolk with all three points.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "The mood in the camp is good.

"There was disappointment after the cup loss but we have got a good team spirit and I have been pleased with that.

"Needham have lost a couple in recent weeks but then you look at who they are playing in Dulwich and Billericay and I think anyone could lose to them at the moment.

"The danger is that we start thinking they are not a threat and may be that pressure lifts off them and they start playing.

"We need to make sure that we are ready

and prepared."

Unlike in previous seasons, Howell has plenty of options to call on for the season runin. This means he has had the luxury to tinker with his starting XI in recent weeks as he looks to keep the Rocks' fine form going.

Against Wingate, James Crane and Dan Beck started, with Jimmy Muitt and Calvin Davies moved to the subs bench.

After a quiet first half, Chad Field broke the deadlock, slotting home after the Wingate goalkeeper failed to gather a Dylan Barnett cross.

The victory was sealed when Crane glanced a wonderful left-sided corner into the bottom right corner of the net.

Three points on the road against a top six side - Howell will settle for that again tomorrow.

He said: "I've got a few ideas which may be different from week to week. It's good to have them up my sleeve and make a decision based on the side that we will be lining up against.

"We need to do that this stage of the season.

We need to make sure we manage the injuries and we adapt our tactics for the next game."

Howell has plenty of options for the trip to Needham tomorrow with Alex Parsons (foot) the only injury concern.

Everyone at Nyewood will be hoping for a repeat of the two sides' last meeting, when the Rocks came out 2-1 winners last month.

'Promotion, not cup, is our aim' BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell has hailed his Rocks side for pushing League Two side Crawley Town all the way in the Sussex Senior Cup semi-final - but pledged that promotion is the ultimate aim for the Nyewood Lane side this year.

A close range finish from Sami El-Abd and Ollie Pearce scoring direct from a corner took the match with the Red Devils into extra time.

With penalties looming, Crawley sub Enzio Boldewijn curled home the winner as time ticked down to send the Rocks to defeat.

Speaking to the Post, Howell, pictured right, said: "I'm delighted with the effort the lads put in and it is always frustrating to get so close. But promotion is the most important thing, there's no question about that.

"As much as would like to win the Sussex Senior Cup, the priority has to be the league - that's the bread and butter and that's where our attention must be now."

For the Rocks, this was an impressive fifth Sussex Senior Cup semi-final in eight years.

However, Tuesday night's defeat means that, for all of the Rocks' success, there has been no tournament victory since 1987.

Crawley will play either Eastbourne Borough or Brighton and Hove Albion in the final.

IT’S BEEN another exciting couple of weeks for the Rocks.

The Dulwich Hamlet home game, as is always the case, was a different game to any of the other fixtures we have in our league.

My colleague, who also contributes every fortnight for Nyecamp News, scored the equaliser late on with a fine header. Well done Craney! A point we deserved in the end I thought.

I was on the coach to Wingate & Finchley. All the fans were expecting another tough outing. And so it proved.

I thought Dylan Barnett was a constant threat down the left and Chad Field finished well to put us in the lead in the second half.

And it was a wonderful cross by Barnett late on converted by Crane again with his head – fantastic stuff.

A crucial win if we are to stay top.

The win meant we were still four points clear but I am very much conscious of the fact we still have a lot of games to go!

On Tuesday night we were in Sussex Senior Cup SemiFinal action against Crawley Town. For me Crawley didn’t really look up for it.

They got the goals, skied a penalty and did what they needed to do but you only had to look at how

many Rocks fans there were compared to Crawley's support to show who wanted it more.

I can’t say highly enough about the effort the lads put in. Well done to the team – yet another county cup semi final. I don’t think there will be many watching the game at the Amex final this year!

But one positive was Ollie Pearce’s goal straight from the corner. So we are out of the cup – but now focus resumes for the league!

A big well done goes to our volunteers who work tirelessly every week at Nyewood Lane and behind the scenes.

A lot of work goes into the pitch at Nyewood Lane. A big well done to Phil (Blobbie), Adie, Tony, Brian and any others I haven’t mentioned.

The hours they spend on the pitch and getting it ready – even the lines on the pitch that Doug does.

I don’t think people appreciate how much time outside of the match days that goes in – so well done to our ground staff!

I am on the coach to Needham Market tomorrow – leaving at 9.30am. I hope Rocks will keep me awake with another fine away performance. Here’s hoping!
