Keeping up fight for city pub

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk SUPPORTERS of a popular pub and restaurant in a heritage building in the heart of a residential area have vowed to keep fighting.

Muchos Nachos in Whyke Road, Chichester, is being threatened with closure as developers bid to turn it into

housing.

THe Mexican eatery and pub has become a very popular meeting point for people in the local community.

Plans were submitted to the council for conversion and extension of the existing building to form three dwellings and construction of two semi-detached houses within the existing car park.

But people in the community argue this is a popular site and getting rid of

it would be detrimental to the area.

THe plans were rejected by Chichester District Council in the summer.

Members of the community want to take over the venue.

City councillor Sarah Sharp has been campaigning to save the popular site, which has faced another setback now as the landlord's lawyers are challenging Chichester District Council's decision to support the community.

Cllr Sharp said: "It is very sad that the community is being forced to fight back to defend this pub.

"But the community aren't taking this lying down. THe landowners have made it very clear that they are never going to sell it to us.

"We don't care who runs it as long as it's there and we can use it."

Another meeting is taking place at the venue tonight where people will discuss the next step in the campaign.

In a letter to the council, lawyers representing the landowners argued that the venue was not used as a pub and simply as a restaurant and therefore its closure would not be detrimental to the community.

THey said: "THe property is and has been for some considerable time a Mexican restaurant.

"THe property's actual use is not as a public house at all.

"Rather, it's primary, main use is as a restaurant although it does also have a small ancillary bar...THe bar serves as a space where diners may have a drink while they wait to be seated for a meal or, occasionally, as a space where customers may relax briefly after a meal and enjoy a nightcap.

"It is used in an ancillary way to the restaurant.

"Since operation of the Mexican restaurant from the property commenced approximately nine years ago, the bar's role within the business run from the property has been to support the restaurant by acting as a waiting area for people to congregate while they wait to be seated in the restaurant, or as an area to enjoy a drink after dinner.

"THe bar is not, however, used by patrons as a destination in its own right, except perhaps in an entirely de minimis way.

"Nor is it at all clear how dining or drinking at the property furthers the

social wellbeing or social interests of the community as a whole rather than small, isolated pockets of the community."

THe letter went on to say that there are nearby pubs that people could use, such as THe Wickham Arms, and that elderly people could also walk the nine minutes to the pub instead.

But Cllr Sharp is arguing, alongside many residents, that the establishment does work well as pub and that there aren't many other pubs in the local area for people to visit.

"It does function as a pub in my view.

THere is the lovely fireplace and that oldy-worldy feeling to the other side of the building," she said.

"You just walk in there in the evening and it feels like a relaxing place where you can meet up with your friends.

"THere is live music, there is a community feel.

"We are clearly going to have to do a lot of work to rally round and give the council more information to support our claim.

"People need to be informed about the serious nature of the threat to the pub.

"I think it comes down to a battle between money and commercial interests of developers who want to make a quick buck, and the community, who could be robbed of a unique heritage building that has served the citizens of this city for 400 years.

"We need housing but not at any cost."

Warning about bird flu as south east urged to take precautions WITH high-risk Avian flu season approaching, Trading Standards are urging poultry keepers to take precautions now, if they haven’t done so already.

As the autumn migration of birds to the UK starts, South East England in particular is at greater risk of bird flu spreading from the continent.

West Sussex Trading Standards team manager Peter Aston said: “It is important that poultry keepers take sensible steps now to stop domestic birds mixing with wild ones.

"THis includes, where practical to do so, not leaving food accessible to wild birds and netting runs.

“THere are no particular restrictions

in place at present and, for the sake of the commercial poultry and egg producers in the county, we would really like to keep it that way. Sensible steps taken now can help achieve this.”

Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “Taking relatively small precautions could have a major impact on stopping the virus entering the domesticated poultry population.”

f Annie enjoys her last shift

Annie says her goodbyes to school for the very last time

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk SHE'S served the children of Selsey for more than 30 years but now lollipop lady Annie Winsor has hung up her coat and stick for the very last time.

Annie has been standing outside Medmerry Primary School helping children cross the road safely every morning and afternoon for the past 32 years.

But now the 78-year-old has decided it's time to retire.

A special assembly was held in her honour and she was presented with gifts from the children.

"THe children kept me here," she said.

"You get a lot back from the children.

Most of them appreciate what you are

doing.

"Having three children of my own and eight grandchildren, I am used to having children around. I just like helping people."

She decided to leave so she could care for her husband, who is unwell.

"My husband is 81 so that's the main reason. He's ill so I am leaving due to family circumstances," she said.

"It's taken me two years to actually do it.

"I do think about my free time too.

I've got a little dog that I like to walk on the beach, too. I like visiting places and doing the gardening.

"But I am very sad to leave. It's hard, but I think I have done the right thing.

"I don't want to stay here and become ill myself and be forced to leave.

"I want the children to remember me as I am."

Get some tips at city market LOCAL producers will be giving a series of mini talks and demonstrations at a special Christmas-themed farmers market.

Taking place on Friday, December 1, it is being held on the same day as the Festive Farmers Market.

Shoppers who visit will be encouraged to meet the people behind the products at a special showcase area at the Market Cross.

A range of regular stallholders will present talks and demonstrations about their produce as well as the stories behind their stalls.

Businesses taking part include Crafted Coffee, O'Hagans Sausages, Selsey Willows and Langford Lobsters, Noble and Stace, Traditional Cheese and Tom Cat Gin. Visitors will also be able to enter a prize draw to win a hamper.

Entry cards will be available at all the stalls and the winner will be announced at the next farmers’ market on Friday, December 15.

Cllr John Connor, cabinet member for the environment at Chichester District Council, said: “Chichester Farmers’ Market gives people the opportunity to support their local producers and this special Christmas-themed event will be a chance to meet the people behind all the wonderful produce, hear their stories and pick up a few cooking tips."

Chichester Farmers’ Market runs every first and third Friday of the month in East Street and North Street, from 9am until 2pm.

THe first farmers’ market of 2018 will be on Friday, January 19.

Get creative at Christmas A GARDEN centre will be organising a variety of workshops to celebrate Christmas.

THe Hillier Garden Centre in Chichester will be celebrating THe Magic of Christmas, with locals being given the opportunity to take part in workshops to brush up on their festive skills.

On THursday, November 30, Hillier’s development chef, Chris Search, will be hosting a cookery demonstration.

During a three-hour class, people can learn how to make a whole array of savoury and sweet party canapes and festive drinks. THe class costs £45 per person.

From Monday, December 4, to Friday December 8, the centre will be running two wreath workshops per day (at 10am and 4pm), lasting 90 minutes.

Shane Richards, centre manager at Hillier Garden Centre Chichester, said: “Our wreath workshops were incredibly popular last year so we’ve brought them back. Uni helps improve quality of water THE Interreg France (Channel) England programme has announced that the University of Chichester will lead a new €4m European project to improve water quality in rivers and lakes in the south of England and north of France.

Currently, only 30 to 40 per cent of waters entering the English Channel are classified as ‘Good Ecological Status’, which is largely due to the high level of nitrates and phosphates in the water as a result of intensive farming.

THe cross-border project, known as CPES (Channel Payment for Ecosystem Services), will aim to reduce nutrient levels by implementing six pilot PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) schemes across the Channel area.

THe schemes work by offering financial incentives to farmers and land managers to encourage them to implement more environmentally friendly methods of farming. THis includes ploughing orientation, targeted use of fertilisers and planting trees, which help significantly reduce the levels of run-off and nutrients in the water system.

THe incentives are funded through the establishment of a market with downstream users who benefit from cleaner water supplies, for example water companies and tourism businesses.

Professor Dave Cooper, head of the University of Chichester's Business School, said: “We are delighted to have secured this European funding.

"THe CPES project offers an exciting opportunity to work with partners from both the UK and France to find a sustainable and effective way of

improving the quality of the water entering the English Channel and reducing the costs of treating drinking water.”

THe schemes will promote a number of improvements in land management practices by reducing the costs and risks associated with earlier PES schemes.

THe six pilot areas will include the Rother River in the South Downs and the Lac au Duc in Brittany, and will target 90 farms and land managers, as well as 18 water quality companies.

THe project will encourage the wider implementation of these type of schemes by using the six pilot sites to develop a resources toolkit which will then be made available to other water companies and land managers in new locations.

THis toolkit will act as a template that can then be used to replicate other commercially sustainable PES schemes across the country.

THe schemes designed by the project will offer a more cost effective method of improving water quality which currently involves water companies managing nutrient levels in drinking water by blending high and low nitrate water sources.

THe cross-border project between France and the UK will total €4m with 69 per cent funded by the Interreg France (Channel) England programme, representing a European Regional Development Fund budget of €2.8m.

A total of 11 organisations from France and the UK will be involved in the project which will last three and a half years.

Council is ready for potential cold weather over the winter A FLEET of gritters are on standby ready for any potential snow and ice this winter.

West Sussex Highways has a fleet of 22 gritters to call upon to help keep roads safe.

Contractor Balfour Beatty has stockpiled 10,500 tonnes of salt at county council depots, in preparation for bad weather.

It has also held gritting “dry run” rehearsals, known as Operation Snowflake, to check staff and resources are ready for when winter bites.

During severe weather, priority is given to keeping major routes treated

and passable and about 40 per cent, or 1,600 kilometres, of the West Sussex road network is treated in icy conditions.

THe county council does not salt the A27, A23 or M23, which are Highways England’s responsibility, but it does treat all other ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads and key routes for emergency vehicles, approaches to major hospitals, large schools, colleges and busy bus routes.

Whenever it snows, one-fifth of the roads on the network are given top priority.

Key rural routes are treated by local farmers through agreements in place with parish councils.

Auschwitz trip invokes passionate emotions for Humanities students Visiting Auschwitz was an eye-opening experience. We had the privilege to visit Auschwitz 1 and 2 camps – both had sombre atmospheres due to the events that took place during WW2.

I was very tearful when I saw a display of so many tiny shoes. They made me think of my own family and how lucky I am to have a beautiful, baby brother in my life.

I was surprised at how our attitudes changed as we went round the camps. Everyone was silent and respectful.

Many were on the verge of crying at what they heard and saw.

We also had the opportunity to listen to the story of a Holocaust survivor. She had gone through so many losses and gains in her life. Anita Peck told us how she had to leave Poland quickly and eventually found her way to Brazil through Portugal. Even although she had been through so much, she managed to lead an incredibly successful life as a scientist. Now she is back in her home city of Krakow with her grandson who attends Krakow University.

Campaign to help restore the RAF Tangmere 'beacon' control tower

THe control tower was part of RAF Tangmere which was a Royal Air Force station famous for its role in the Battle of Britain. THe tower was constructed in 1943 and in use on D-Day when the airfield was an important Fighter Command station.

THe flying control tower remained in use right up until the point when the airfield closed as an RAF station in 1970.

Tangmere parish councillor Matt GoverWren is working with various people to put together a consortium to restore the building which is in the ownership of the Church Commission.

HOUSEHOLDS on low incomes will continue to receive support to pay their council tax after councillors agreed a new scheme for 2018 – 2019.

Four years ago, new rules were introduced by the government which abolished the council tax benefit scheme that had helped people on low incomes.

Councils were then allowed to develop their own schemes to help working age people pay their council tax, while pensioners were fully protected from reductions.

THe scheme introduced by Chichester District Council was based largely on the old government scheme.

In the summer, a review of the district’s council tax reduction scheme took place and a public consultation was held.

As a result, for the first time, the council is introducing a banded scheme for working age customers who receive universal credit.

THe council is also adapting its discretionary policy. THis will allow an additional amount of council tax reduction to be made where a claimant suffers financial hardship as a result of the banded scheme.

Cllr Philippa Hardwick, cabinet member for finance and governance at the council, said: “As a council we want to continue to support people on low incomes and we are very proud of the fact that this has always been a priority for us."

Helping to put an end to sexual harassment

FOLLOWING the recent high profile sexual harassment cases, local HR and employment law specialist Sue Beeby of the HR Dept explains the steps local business owners should take to avoid damaging employment tribunal cases With more and more lurid allegations of sexual harassment coming to light every day, such as the Harvey Weinstein case, stories from ordinary people through the hashtag #MeToo and accusations against other stars, like House of Card’s Kevin Spacey, it’s time for business owners to review their policies and procedures for preventing and dealing with such allegations.

Sexual harassment complaints can often end up at an employment tribunal.

In a recent case, a factory worker won £10,000 compensation for sexual harassment after her boss wrote in her 40th birthday card that he wanted to grope her. One person’s ‘bit of banter’ is another person’s humiliation and

subsequent court case.

Another tribunal saw an HR manager with the NHS win over £800k after having been harassed after rejecting the advances of the chairman, claiming constructive dismissal, sex discrimination and sexual harassment.

Even more than the financial hit, the reputational damage to a company can be more devastating, especially if the perpetrator has a history and is in a position of power, and even more so when victims have been told to keep quiet. It is good to remember that no one is above the law and the dignity of all staff is paramount to a productive team.

Sexual harassment can include sexual comments or jokes, wrongly often explained as a bit of banter, physical behaviour, including unwelcome sexual advances, displaying pictures, photos or drawings of a sexual nature, like girly calendars (or the male equivalent) and sending emails with a sexual content.

Business owners can protect their staff from sexual harassment and their company’s reputation by having clear and unequivocal bullying and harassment policies and processes. They should make it extremely and undeniably clear that sexual harassment will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and firmly, be it an allegation about the cleaner or the managing director.

These policies and procedures should be supported by staff training and regular reviews and updates on the standards of behaviour expected.

Rethink needed over plans for new homes in Boxgrove

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS for up to 22 new homes in Boxgrove have been deferred after councillors raised concerns about the proximity to the A27.

THe scheme, for land west of Abbots Close, in Priors Acre, would provide eight affordable homes.

However, councillors at Chichester District Council were worried as they were positioned close to the main road and segregated from the rest of the community.

Many felt this was unfair and that the plans should be looked at again to allow the housing to all be positioned in the same place to avoid social exclusion.

Michael Bish is the chairman of Boxgrove Parish Council's planning committee.

He said: "It's very close to the A27.

Our main concern is the position of the affordable units.

"Why are all the affordable units for our new, local families positioned closed to the A27 in one lump?

"All the noise and pollution is just not good for young families.

"I would request that a redesign of the layout is considered."

Mr Bish added that the parish council was also concerned about the design of some of the buildings which were described as 'uninspiring and disappointing'.

Cllr Jane Kilby also raised concerns about the affordable housing.

She said: "I would prefer to see it much more integrated with the whole scheme rather than everything down the bottom close to the A27.

"Surely the layout could be integrated so that it's within the development and not tucked in at the end?"

Meanwhile, Cllr Richard Plowman added: "One of the reasons why it's preferred to have the units there is so that it stops them feeling that they are second grade citizens but this seems to do that.

"THey are so close to the A27 that they are tucked away. I think a better layout could be done."

Councillors at the committee unanimously voted to defer the item with the aim of coming back with an improved site layout.

More new homes in the north get the go-ahead by councillors PLANS for 200 new homes in the north of the city have been given the green light.

Councillors at Chichester District Council's planning committee gave the go-ahead for the homes north east of Graylingwell Park.

THe application is the second phase of the Westhampnett and north east Chichester strategic housing allocation, which makes up a total of 500 homes.

Outline planning permission was given in June last year for the first phase of up to 300 homes.

THe application includes 30 per cent affordable homes as well as associated landscaping and open space.

A cycle and footpath is also included as part of the plans.

Concerns were raised about its proximity to the river Lavant with potential flooding but officers reassured the committee that this was not something they were overly concerned about.

Some councillors also expressed concern about the nearby racing circuit at Goodwood and the noise that this could cause for residents living in the area.

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "With the river Lavant we know that part of this is a flood zone.

"We just want reassurance that we aren't going to get into any problems with this site.

"Many of us remember the whole area flooding in recent years."

Meanwhile, the Chichester and District Cycle Forum supported the application as long as there was a good cycle route through the area.

Cllr Dunn added: "THe cycle access is vital but I don't know in the long term about the idea of sharing cycle ways with pedestrians.

"As we become more aware of the impact of global warming, cyclists are going to be moving quickly.

"We need to segregate cyclists and pedestrians in the future."

Celebrations for students and staff at Chichester College

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER COLLEGE marked a host of exceptional achievements at their annual Star Awards ceremony, with a glittering night of celebrations.

Around 50 students and members of staff scooped awards at the ‘Stars of 2017’, where the college paid tribute to their hard work, determination and accomplishments over the past year.

THe ceremony, sponsored by the University of Chichester, celebrated dreams and aspirations with a number of themed performances, including opening with a fashion parade showcasing the designs of the college’s fashion students.

It was brought to life with a number of spectacular performances from dance and musical theatre students.

But the night belonged to former student Meredith Buckley, who was named the college’s Brightest Star of 2017.

Meredith, 20, completed her Level 3 Art and Design Diploma at the college earlier this year – and was praised by her tutor, Maria Smith, for her unwavering dedication to her studies, which she undertook while also caring for her disabled mum and siblings.

She said: “I’m ecstatic. I can’t believe it.

I have no words. I’m just overwhelmed and surprised."

Meredith, who cycled a 14-mile round-trip to college every day from Southbourne, was joined by her mum, Julie, and her family.

Julie said: “I’m proud of everybody who was here at the ceremony receiving an award as they have all done exceptionally well, but to hear Meredith called out as the star of the year – that made me cry.

She worked so hard, and she does so much.”

Park and ride back for 2017 THE free park and ride service is returning to Chichester again this Christmas.

THe service provides a quick and easy transport for residents and visitors in the city centre.

THe service is supported by Chichester College.

It means that residents and visitors can spend more time looking for presents rather than parking spaces in the run-up to Christmas.

THe park and ride service starts this THursday to coincide with the lights switch-on event in the city. Last year's event saw 12,500 people pack into the city.

THe service runs through until Christmas Eve. THe route starts from Chichester College car park and then continues into the city centre with convenient pick-up and drop off points at various locations.

THe pick-ups will be at Eastgate (opposite the Cattle Market car park), Northgate (the lay-by in Oaklands) and at Chichester Cathedral.

THE average rent in Chichester right now is £1,150pcm.

THat falls in line with the average price of a three-bedroom house, so that is what the ‘average’ tenant can likely afford to rent in Chichester.

Unfortunately, not everyone is ‘average’ and even those who are will be spending a large chunk of their income on rent.

Most landlords and agents who undertake tenant referencing will do so within set parameters of the industry. Prospective tenants need to show provable income of 30 times the monthly rent per year.

So, at an average rent of £1,150pcm, the average tenants of a property in Chichester will need to earn £34,500 per annum.

While this is in excess of the average salary within both the UK (£27,600) and Chichester (£28,800), don’t forget that most properties of this size will be occupied by more than one tenant, and it is their combined income that needs to pass the affordability check.

Unfortunately, when I contacted a young chap who had enquired about renting a two-bedroom house at £925pcm and asked whether he earns in excess of £27,750 (925 x 30) I was met by a four-worded tirade as to how I could expect anyone his age to earn that.

While I can’t say I sympathised much due to this particular individual’s language, the (in) affordability of housing is certainly a problem for Chichester’s youngsters. Many starting out in their careers will flat-share with friends or rent an individual room in a shared house, before moving into a home with a partner.

While this individual wanted his own space, I can’t say that situation has changed much throughout time. I’m afraid that unless earnings suddenly rise, things aren’t likely to get much better for tenants in the near future either.

Poaching rise GAME dealers, restaurateurs, hotels and public houses are being advised to check they are not buying illegally-killed game.

THe warning is being made by Sussex Police as autumn heralds a potential seasonal rise in poaching across the county, especially for deer, both shot and coursed, and also hares, again coursed illegally by poachers with dogs.

THe force's wildlife crime officer, PCSO Daryl Holter, said: "THe cosy, traditional image of a local countryman taking 'one for the pot' is far removed from the gruesome reality of modern-day poaching which can be carried out on an all but commercial basis, often by gangs travelling into the countryside from towns and cities, sometimes from quite a distance.

"We have worked closely with rural communities and partner agencies to tackle the problem in the county for a number of years.

We are preparing for an increase in reports due to the time of year and would like to raise awareness around poaching and associated activities early on."

To prevent purchasing illegal meat, people are advised not to buy from people who they do not know, report suspicious gatherings in car parks around vans or 4x4s and dealers in game should show legal documentation for the sale of meat.

Daryl added: "I would urge anyone to contact police with any information that would help in catching poachers, especially if they have been offered meat from sources other than bona fide dealers."

Untold story of smugglers A NEW exhibition has officially launched at the city's museum as the brutal history of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang is brought to life.

THe Novium Museum's new smugglers exhibition showcases the untold stories of local smugglers and their victims in the Chichester district.

Visitors can find out how the Hawkhurst Gang smuggled contraband along the coast and committed some shocking murders.

THe gruesome ends of many local victims will be featured in the exhibition including William Galley, a customs

officer; Daniel Chater, a witness to one of the Hawkhurst Gang's murders; and a local man from Yapton who was violently assaulted for allegedly stealing tea.

THe Hawkhurst Gang finally met their match at the Chichester Guildhall in 1749 where the ringleaders were tried, convicted and sentenced to execution.

THeir bodies were displayed in gallows across the district as a warning to others.

THe exhibition also looks at the crime and punishments smugglers faced at the time.

Jill's plea for PoW relatives A NORTH BERSTED woman wants remembrance weekend to draw attention to former wartime prisoners of the Japanese.

Jill Robertson is a member of the Children of Far Eastern Prisoners of War. Her father, Stanley Moore, was held in the infamous Changi jail for three-anda-half years in the Second World War. She said: "My dad mentioned a few things about being a prisoner but he did

keep a diary, which was tiny.

"I am area co-ordinator for the charity for West Sussex. Membership is open to all surviving FEPOWs, their children, their grandchildren and all immediate family members.

"The charity was set up by a woman called Carol Cooper, who did not know her father.

"She had been born prior to his going to the Far East but he never came back.

She was destined to never know him."

By chance, his diary was found in the jungle. Carol finally got ownership of it and found the inspiration to form the charity as the old-guard of prisoners of war in the Far East were dwindling away.

"As a tribute to her father, she was successful in establishing the charity and a museum at the national arboretum in Lichfield, Staffordshire. This is now home to CoFEPOW," said Jill, 62.

Her father was captured in the fall of Singapore on February 15, 1942.

"Since August, 1940, he had been posted to the 291 Company of the Royal Army Service Corps, within the 18th Division. The division sailed from Liverpool in October, 1941, taking the long, top secret route via south America and Cape Town.

"Their intended destination was

unknown to the regular soldier. They thought they were going to the desert and in through the back door via the Middle East.

"On December 7, when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese, this destination was changed.

"They sailed towards India and, on January 29, 1942, they sailed into Kepple Harbour, Singapore. They were there to protect and fight for the final jewel in the crown of the British Empire, against the Imperial Japanese Army."

Jill, of Violet Close, said she would be glad to hear of anyone else's stories of their relatives' time in the Far East during the war from the end of 1941 to the end of 1945.

TEMPORARY housing for homeless people is to be bought by Arun District Council.

Councillors agreed unanimously last week to spend up to ÂŁ1.1m on suitable homes for those who are desperate for roofs over their heads.

Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick W), the council's leader, told them: "Not only is this a good financial deal for the council, but will also provide good quality temporary accommodation for people who need their own homes."

The homes will be self-contained and help to cut the council's spending on rooms with private landlords.

The money is in addition to the ÂŁ1m the council agreed to buy suitable properties for homeless people.

` McDonald's open TABLE service is being started at the new look McDonald's branch in Bognor Regis.

Franchisee Grant Cooper will launch the service when the branch in Oldlands Way opens next Tuesday. His move follows the success of the service in other restaurants because it takes the stress out of finding somewhere to sit while carrying food.

It also means children do not have to be left on their own when their parents order meals.

Self-order kiosks will enable other customers to customise their food.

Mr Cooper said: "These changes are designed to make our customers' experience as positive as possible."

Crowds pause to pay tribute to the fallen

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk HUNDREDS of people gathered in the city on Sunday to remember those who died in conflict.

People lined the streets as members of the forces past and present joined with the local Royal British Legion,

emergency services and local clubs to parade through the city centre, led by the City Band.

THe parade began in East Street and finished at the War Memorial in Litten Gardens.

THe Rev Canon Simon Holland led the short service.

THe crowd then fell silent as THe Last Post rang out at 11am.

Members of the community including the Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans, and the city's new MP, Gillian Keegan, then laid wreaths at the memorial.

THe service ended with the hymn Sussex by the Sea before the parade left Litten Gardens and continued back to East Street and along to North Street where it finished.

Meanwhile, residents, staff and visitors at Marriott House and Lodge Care Home in Chichester remembered those lost in conflict with their annual balloon release.

THey wrote messages which were attached to red balloons. THe balloons were released during the two minute silence.

Resident Kevin Card said: ‘I served in the Royal Navy and I was so proud to put my medals on and stand with everyone remembering those lost or injured in conflict."

Other residents had served in the forces or had husbands who had served in the forces.

Sarah Harding, head of activities at the home, said: "Today has been all about remembering those that have been lost or injured in conflicts.

"THis has become a yearly event with the balloon release and the residents are always keen to continue this.

"It is lovely to see all the generations coming together and never forgetting those that have paid the ultimate price for their country.”

Lost horses are honoured

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk GOODWOOD racecourse released a special video tribute to the horses used by military forces during the First World War. Horses formed a key part in the transportation of soldiers, weaponry and resources for all sides during the war and, in the British forces, more than 27,000 men served in the Army Veterinary Corps to support them.

Heavy horses were used to pull large guns and mules often carried food supplies. Lighter riding horses and thoroughbreds were ridden by Army Officers and the Cavalry in battle.

Alongside the enormous human loss, more than eight million horses lost their lives between July 28, 1914, and November 11, 1918, with the majority perishing from exposure to the elements, hunger and illness and around 15 per cent as a direct result of enemy fire.

Goodwood itself suffered tragedy in the First World War, as career soldier Bernard Gordon Lennox, son of the 7th Duke of Richmond, died in November, 1914, in the early months of trench warfare in Flanders. His brother, Lord Esme, was badly wounded at Ypres.

THe 7th Duke converted his Scottish residence, Gordon Castle, into a hospital to treat those affected by the war.

THe video features some endearing images taken during the conflict, such as a horse being unloaded from a ship and the moving moment that 650 US servicemen grouped together to form a horse’s head, in tribute to the role these equine heroes played.

Hospital marks death of men WARTIME graves of some of the RAF's first casualties are to be tended by a Bognor Regis service personnel group.

THe resting places of Lt Norman England and Lt Victor Craigie are to be adopted by the town's branch of the Royal Air Forces Association.

Details of the deaths of the men, two of the three involved in a fatal midair collision in the First World War, were read to a record turnout at the Remembrance Sunday service at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

Cliff Mewett, the branch's chairman, and its secretary, David Hewings, outlined details of the aerial deaths.

Mr Hewings said the adoption of the graves would take place for the centenary of the deaths next April 6.

THe men were buried at St Andrew's Church in Oving.

THe collision occurred when the men were training in the newly-formed 92 Squadron in the first week of the RAF. "It does not mean to say we should think any less of them because they were not killed in battle, " Mr Hewings said.

"THey were probably people who had served in the trenches before they came to training. THey knew what the risks were, they took the risks and they paid the price for us."

All three officers in the collision were stationed at Tangmere. Lt England, 31, a flying instructor and Clifford Hackman, 20, were in a two-seater Avro bomber/ trainer, and Lt Craigie, 26, was on his first flight in a single-seater Scout.

THe two aircraft collided about 300ft above the edge of the airfield. Lt England lived in Oving and Lt Craigie came from Canada, having grown up in Binsted.

College to turn purple to help to fight polio f First aid training in action

Pupils' lessons in providing first aid TRAINING to save lives has been completed by hundreds of Felpham Community College pupils.

Its Year 7 students have been the first in to attend mini workshops in the autumn in the essential subject.

They focused on the primary survey of the casualty and the recovery position, danger response, burns and bleeding and cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. The British Heart Foundation donated 20 resuscitation dolls to the college on condition one in five of its pupils are trained each year in essential first aid.

One of the students who took part, Fearne Dewar, said: "Everything we were shown was useful and you learned when you would have to do it.

STUDENTS and staff have ensured Felpham Community College will be turning purple next spring.

The volunteers planted a purple crocus bulb for each of the college's 1,400 pupils as part of the campaign to wipe out polio.

This is the second year the college has joined with Bognor Regis Rotary Club as part of the movement's worldwide efforts to eradicate the disabling disease.

College senior assistant headteacher Michelle Kelly said: "Last year, we planted 1,400 bulbs in November and we held a community tea party in the spring term to celebrate the bulbs flowering

and decorating the school campus with the colour.

"Felpham have recently obtained our Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 award which shows our commitment to campaigning for change.

"This was an ideal opportunity to get involved again and to help raise awareness of an awful disease that needlessly still affects so many people.

"We are looking to the sea of purple again in the spring."

The Rotary campaign wants to make sure the vaccination can be made available to people all over the world.

"It was good having the training split up into three little workshops as it kept us focused and learning different skills."

The workshops were organised by some of the college's St John Ambulance cadets - Poppy Shallis, Issy Saunders and Charlie Cogger with college staff.

They followed the college's initial first aid training for students last summer. These pupils, now in Year 8, said the sessions would be useful earlier in the year.

Nicole Matthews, Year 7 leader and organiser of the event, said: "As a school, we now organise first aid training every year for our Year 7 students."

It has lasted for 30 years and has seen the condition restricted to just three countries. Purple is the campaign's colour because that is the dye which vaccinated children receive on their fingers to show they have been included.

Jackson Voight, a Year 8 student, said: "It is good that we are taking part for a second year and that we can keep students aware of the dangers of polio.

"I took part in the planting last year at college and at Hotham Park with the planting that was done there as part of the local campaign."

Lemon flavour provides wine with plenty of zest Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

AS AUTUMN turns more hibernal with the return of old Jack Frost, off I trekked to Majestic in Chichester to do a little bit of wine–tasting, ably accompanied by wine guru eloquent Ellie.

We began by tasting the 2016 Quinta De Azevedo Vinho Verde priced at a November offer price of just £5.99, if one of six bottles purchased and all subsequent bottles are subject to this

caveat.

Wow! This was not your cheap and cheerful Vinho Verde, but in fact a superior wine with this blend of 95 per cent Loureiro and five per cent Arinto sporting white floral aromas complementing lemony intensity with a hint of spritz, good acidity and a clean finish - the ideal apéritif à mon avis!

For an outlay of £7.49, the 2016 Villemarin Picpoul de Pinet Ormarine was the next tasting and sporting a nose of lemon and lime, it proved to be a particularly lemony Picpoul, a grape variety which ripens late and thus benefits from end-of-season humidity to finally mature. This wine would complement fresh oysters or any type of shellfish.

For the exact same price, I next sampled a 2016 López de Haro Rioja Bianco and I was intrigued to discover my reaction to a wine I had not tasted for a few years. Well, most remiss of me, as this wine exudes ripe fruit flavours including hints of banana and comes from vines aged between 50 and 80 years old on the foothills of the Tolono mountains - one well worth a try. A perfect accompaniment to a roast chicken dish also.

My final white tasting involved an erstwhile favourite of mine, namely a 2016 Passimento Bianco in the heart of Valpolicella in the province of Verona and featuring the Garganega grape. For an offer price of £8.99, this wine has a creamy, rich mouth-feel balanced by bright acidity, and notes of citrus

afford it a crisp feeling with a touch of sweetness from the strong peach flavours - a beautifully -balanced wine with a lingering finish which could pair easily with all sorts of cuisine - a lovely summer tipple.

In terms of red wines, a 2016 Carmanere Errazuriz caught my eye for a November offer price of just £7.99 and is another Chilean masterpiece with a nose of fruit, wood and earth and dark fruit flavours on the palate culminating in a long spicy finish. This young wine has a taste of maturity and merits your attention.

My second red selection came when I spied, with my little eye, a Wakefield Estate 2015 Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon mindful of the fact that it is the leading family-owned winery in Australia and that chief winemaker Adam Eggins recently surpassed all

rivals to procure the prestigious prize of Australian winemaker of the year.

This medium-bodied wine, for an offer price of just £8.99, has firm structure with great intensity and distinctive blackcurrant and cassis flavours and French oak maturation leads to delicate aromas of cedar and dark chocolate with subtle spice - a complex wine with fine tannins and a lingering finish and one to drink now or keep until about 2023. A veritable delight of a wine and one I commend to you sans aucune réservation.

Honey Garlic Salmon

Method

INGREDIENTS SAUCE • 4 tbsp honey • 2 tbsp soy sauce (all purpose or light soy sauce) • 1 tbsp white vinegar (or sub with any other vinegar except balsamic) • 1 large garlic clove (or 2 small) , minced

SALMON • 2 salmon or trout fillets, skinless (6oz / 200g each) • Olive oil • Salt and pepper

OPTIONAL GARNISHES • Sesame seeds • Finely sliced chives or shallots/scallions

of spice and vanilla oak leading on to ripe, dark berry fruits, soft tannins and a long finish.

The strangely shaped bottle might deter you, but be bold and savour this flavoursome example.

My final red wine selection was that of a 2012 Conde de San Cristobel Ribera del Duero priced at £14.99 and the very wine that Michelle Obama and her mother enjoyed during Barack Obama's state visit to Cuba in March, 2016. Blackberry, liquorice, tar and smoke abound in this complex wine which singularly fails to disappoint with summer fruits to the fore and a silkiness to admire. A un de ces jours!

1. Take salmon out of the fridge 20 minutes before cooking. Pat salmon skin dry with a paper towel and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

2. Whisk together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.

3. Drizzle oil in a non stick fry pan and heat over medium high heat (or just under, if your stove runs hot). Place salmon in the pan, and cook the first side for 3 minutes. Turn, then cook the other side for 2 minutes, or to taste.

4. Pour sauce over salmon.

Cook for 1 minute or until it starts to thicken slightly. Check the side of the salmon to tell how cooked through the middle is - I like mine rare inside. (Note 1). If sauce thickens too much before your salmon is cooked to your taste, just add water 1 tbsp at a time.

5. Remove onto serving plates.

6. Serve salmon drizzled with sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds and chives/shallots, if desired.

INGREDIENTS • 125 g / 1 stick unsalted butter, melted • 1½ cups/ 225 g plain flour (all purpose flour) • 1½ cups / 135 g rolled oats (traditional oats, not quick, instant or steel cut) • ½ cup / 110 g brown sugar • ½ tsp baking powder • Pinch of salt • 1 egg • 2/3 cup strawberry jam

STRAWBERRIES • 2 cups chopped strawberries (about 375g) • 2 tbsp white sugar • 2 tsp cornflour / cornstarch

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180C/350 (fan forced). (Note 1) 2. Spray a 20cm/9" square tin with oil and line with baking/parchment paper with overhang (so it can be lifted out once cooked).

3. Mix together flour, oats, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add butter and egg then mix.

4. Measure out 1 cup of the mixture (for topping) and set aside. Place remaining mixture in the

tin and press into base.

5. Mix together Strawberries, sugar and cornflour in a bowl (don't do this in advance because sugar will make strawberries sweat = runny filling).

6. Spread base with jam (Note 2), then scatter over strawberries. Use your hands to crumble the remaining mixture over the top (Note 3).

7. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is deep golden. Remove and allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin before lifting out of the tin using the baking paper. It will sag - don't worry, it will set.

8. Cut into squares. Serve at room temperature. Store in airtight container (in fridge if it's very hot where you are).

A little ray of sunshine to help boost your vitamin D WITH THE risk of annoying each and every one of you, I wondered if I should tell you where I am at the moment, or just pretend I am in the UK? I thought I might chance it, in the hope that you may have some sympathy for me knowing I am working really hard!

Its about six in the evening, the last rays of sunlight are disappearing, but fortunately it's still 30 degrees, and fortunately I am sitting by a pool on a rooftop terrace in Dubai!

But it’s not what you think. I am just embarking on the first of many work trips to Dubai. I am making it out to be very glamorous, but actually I am working extremely hard, very long hours, and this is the first time I have seen daylight in four days!

I am delivering health seminars to corporate companies around stress management and nutrition. So far, so good! I was very nervous on day one, as my first audience consisted of 65 people and I had 18 different nationalities to present to, so it was a little out of my comfort zone to say the least.

It's so interesting, as I am finding out, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, or what your position is within a company, most people who live in a westernised society and work within a high performing successful business are suffering from anxiety, exhaustion and deficiencies.

What’s even more tragic is that most of the people I have seen here have severe vitamin D deficiencies.

How can this be?

They live in one of the hottest climates in the world, have pretty much wall-to-wall sunshine 365 days a years, and yet they are deficient. Why? Because they live their lives in air-conditioned buildings, and rarely go outside during the week as they are working all through daylight hours.

Did you know that even if it's cloudy outside you will still get a good fix of vitamin D? How about improving your creativity?

Being outside not only gives you your vitamin D fix, but boosts your creativity. If you’re trying to solve a problem or come up with a brilliant idea, take a walk in some good old-fashioned fresh air. Apparently, walking increases 81 per cent of creativity!

Better concentration?

Among children with ADHD, spending time in nature leads to improvements in focus and higher scores on concentration tests.

There are some opinions suggesting that this condition is made much worse due to the amount of time children spend indoors.

Exercising in nature.

'Green exercise', which is exercise in the presence of nature, has unique benefits above and beyond many expectations.

Physical activity outdoors, even for as little as five minutes, leads to measurable improvements in mood and self-esteem.

Apparently, one in ten people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D. Researchers have noted that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in adults of all ages who have increased skin pigmentation, such as those whose ancestors are from Africa, the Middle East, or India, or who always wear sun protection or limit their outdoor activities.

So the message is, increasing your vitamin D levels is vitally important, whereever you live in the world, as increasing levels of vitamin D3 among the general population could prevent chronic diseases that claim nearly one million lives throughout the world each year and incidence of several types of cancer could also be slashed in half. It also fights infections, including colds and the flu, as it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses.

I firmly believe that appropriate sun exposure is the best way to optimise your vitamin D levels, and the more time you spend outdoors, the easier it will be for you to naturally absorb this important vitamin.

Community News & Views SOME of the biggest employers throughout West Sussex are taking steps to keep flu at bay by offering free flu vaccinations to all staff.

Hundreds of employees at West Sussex County Council and the NHS in the area have taken advantage of the opportunity.

Both organisations are encouraging as many people as possible to protect themselves from flu as well. This winter staff in the council and the health service will come into contact with thousands of members of the public. They believed it was vital they took steps to help people to stay well.

Marianne Griffiths, chief executive of St Richard's Hospital operator Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "It's widely believed the coming flu season will be severe.

"Working in hospitals, we have a higher risk of catching flu and many of us could experience no symptoms, yet still pass it on to our loved ones, colleagues and, of course, the people we care for."

Since October, the council and NHS in West Sussex have been encouraging residents to go and get the flu jab.

But they are now putting out the call to employers who can encourage their staff to go and get the jab too.

The hope is that, the more people are vaccinated in the community, the less opportunity there is for flu to spread.

County council senior advisor for adults and health, Ashvin Patel, said: "Offering a free flu jab to staff has been a really key step in trying to keep our council teams well.

"We hope this step will reduce sickness and allow us to keep much-needed services running for our residents.

"It will also prevent our frontline staff passing on flu to some of the more 'at risk' residents that we work with."

MEMBERS of Donnington Gardening Club were given an interesting and illustrated insight at their latest meeting into a nature reserve.

Helen Beal, voluntary warden at Kingley Vale Nature Reserve, spoke about the natural life of the 500 acres of chalk grassland and yew forest which made it one of the most important sites of its kind in southern England.

Club press officer Lawrence Holloway said: "It contains 11 species of orchids, many 2,000-year-old yew trees, several species of bats, 39 recorded species of butterflies and moths and 14 scheduled ancient monuments.

"The most important butterfly on the reserve is the Chalkhill Blue, whose caterpillars feed on Horseshoe Vetch and have an international relationship with ants. Recently, there were 200300 Chalkhill Blues in the studied colony."

The 20th century ecologist, Sir Arthur Tansley, who was an English botanist, lobbied for decades to get Kingley Vale protected in some way.He was instrumental in getting it chosen as a national nature reserve in the late 1940s.

At the top of the reserve, a few hundred metres from the Devil's Hump, there is a monument to him called the Tansley Stone. It looks out from Brow Hill over one of the most breathtaking views over Sussex.

After being cremated on November 29, 1955, his ashes were scattered in Kingsley Vale.

"Much of the vegetation in Kingley Vale is controlled on a rotation basis by Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cattle, which carry out the very important job of grazing down the grasses to enable the many wildflowers to grow and prosper," added Mr Holloway.

"The chalk grasslands are very fragile and must be carefully conserved. Roe, Fellow and Mountjac deer are able to feed on the vegetation of the yew trees as they not toxic to deer."

FOUR guitarists of exceptional artistry will be delighting members of West Sussex Guitar Club this month.

The Vida Guitar Quartet, pictured above, have been described as possessing 'unerring musical instinct' by Gramophone magazine.

And the club's members will find out why at the next recital at 7.30pm on November 25 at the Recital Hall of the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

Classic fm has also been lavish in its praise for the quartet, describing their ability to 'conjure up an orchestral palette of colour and effect'.

BOGNOR library-users are being asked for their feedback over plans for the garden.

Staff at the town library in London Road are working on increasing the usage on the garden and want community feedback.

Library manager Christine Broggi said: "We are working with the Aldingbourne Trust to explore how we can make the most of the Bognor Regis Library Garden as a community resource, secure funding and engage the interest of the local residents.

"As part of the initial stages

WATER quality in rivers and lakes in southern England and northern France will be improved in a multi-million euro project led by the University of Chichester.

The European funding will aim to reduce nutrient levels in the waterways to counter the current situation where only 30-40 per cent of waters entering the English Channel are classed as 'good ecological status'.

This is largely because of the high level of nitrates and phosphates in the water as a result of intensive farming.

The €4m project being organised by the university will implement six pilot PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) schemes across the Channel area.

The schemes will offer financial incentives to farmers and land managers to encourage them to implement more environmentally friendly methods of farming, such as ploughing orientation, targeted use of fertilisers and planting trees.

These should help to greatly reduce the level of run-off from fields and nutrients in the water system.

The six pilot areas will include the River Rother in West Sussex and the Lac au Duc in Brittany. They will target 90 farms and land managers as well as 18 water quality companies.

Professor Dave Cooper, from the University of Chichester, said: "We are delighted to have secured this European funding.

"The CPES project offers an exciting opportunity to work with partners from both the UK and France to find a sustainable and effective way of improving the quality of the water entering the English Channel and reducing the costs of treating drinking water."

The initial six sites will allow a toolkit to be made available to other water companies and land managers in other locations.

This toolkit will act as a template that can be used to create other commercially sustainable PES schemes across the country.

They will be intended to offer a more cost effective method of improving water quality which currently involves water companies managing nutrient levels in drinking water by blending high and low nitrate water sources.

The cross-border project between the UK and France will total €4m funded by the Interreg France (Channel) England programme. A total of 11 organisations from both countries will be involved in the three-and-a-half year project.

MORE than 100 competitors took part in the annual It's A Knockout contest held by Bognor Regis Lions Club, pictured above.

The club joined with its sister clubs from Chichester, Midhurst, Worthing and Southbourne to hold the event for adults with learning difficulties.

The event was held at Arena Sports Centre in Bognor Regis and consisted of a number of fun games which were enthusiastically contested during the day.

The overall winner was L'Arche in Bognor Regis, with Ferring receiving the Spirit of Knockout trophy.

Tammy Fells, the Bognor club's membership secretary, said: "If the noise levels throughout the day were anything to go by, the competitors had a very enjoyable time.

"The invited guests included the town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many competitors with learning difficulties attending the event.

Nine centres had competitors involved in the fun - L'Arche, Wrenford Centre, Apuldram, Fitzalan Howard, Aldingbourne, The Pines, Ferring, The Centre and Oak Community."

Walls form a vital part of Chichester's deep history, stretching back for many centuries

By Lorna Still, volunteer at The Novium Museum Continued from last week AS time went on, the walls became less important for defence, as methods of warfare changed, such as the development of the navy.

Subsequently, the walls were not properly maintained and in 1533, two children were playing under the north wall on a windy day and ‘four cartloads of stones fell on them and buried them’.

THe walls were used for defence for the last time during the English Civil War. Chichester was important because of its position in relation to Portsmouth and London.

THe church and nobles in Chichester supported the King, while the merchants supported Parliament.

In 1642, the Royalists took control of the city and reinforced the walls with banks of earth.

On December 22, Sir William Waller, with

his Parliamentary army, arrived just north of the city and began what is known as ‘the eight-day siege of Chichester’.

THe city was attacked from all directions and great damage was done, especially to the medieval Deanery on the south wall, the gates and the eastern and western suburbs.

THe Royalists surrendered on December 29. In 1659, there were rumours of a Royalist attack on Chichester from France and plans were made to destroy the walls so they could not be captured by the enemy.

Luckily, no attack occurred, so the walls were saved.

When the plague came to Chichester in 1665, the gates were shut to limit the spread of disease.

Many changes were made to the walls in the 18th century.

In 1772, part of the wall by Bishop’s Palace garden was rebuilt with red brick, possibly

because it would retain heat and so help to ripen fruit.

THree of the city gates were removed in 1773 to relieve traffic congestion.

THe East Gate, which housed the city’s prison above it, was demolished 10 years later, as a new one was to be built nearby at the end of East Street.

THis was the first time the circuit had been broken since the walls had been built.

Many of the bastions were removed at the request of residents and a powder magazine was added in around 1778.

No longer needed for defence, the walls started to be used as a public amenity.

Promenades were becoming popular elsewhere in England, and there was already a wall walk for visitors by the Bishop’s Palace Gardens.

THe council invested in tree-lined promenades along the walls in the north-east and north-west quadrants, which could be used by the public without charge.

THe wall walks would give good views of the city and the fields outside.

Steps were built to improve access between the streets and the walls.

As the city grew in size, the importance of the city walls was not forgotten as the walls remained in place while urban development, such as the construction of the Somerstown

estate in 1809, continued outside the city walls.

THey were also later used as a picturesque backdrop for the Jubilee Gardens, situated in New Park Road, created in 1887.

Priory Park, flanked by the walls which once partly enclosed the castle, was open to subscribers in the 19th century and was given by the Duke of Richmond as a public park and war memorial in 1918.

Decorative arches were erected where the old gates used to be for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, Edward VII’s coronation in 1902 and George VI’s coronation in 1937.

Impressive imaginative reconstructions of the gates were created for the coronation of King George V in 1911.

THe Ancient Monuments Act gave legal protection to historic monuments of national importance and the city walls were scheduled in 1934.

Archaeological investigation had been taking place since 1885, and in 2004 the City Walls Project was set up, with money from Chichester District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve the walls and improve access to them.

Much new information about the walls was discovered and the project culminated in the City Walls Illuminations in 2012.

Be an early riser. Your shift will start at around 4.00am, so it’s an early start, but on the flip side, your afternoons will be your own.

Your route for the day will then be loaded into your on-board computer – and you’re off!

Work set contracted hours and have stable shift patterns. That’s 43 hours a week, working a rotating 5 days including weekends, although a typical week can be less than that. All of which will hopefully help you to plan your life around work more easily.

Be supported with a 6-week induction, support from in-house driver training teams and fully funded Driver CPC. Your Driver CPC training is in work hours too, not outside of them.

As a Warehouse/Despatch Operative you’ll:   

You will be responsible for assembling all orders on time and in full for your colleagues who will be making the deliveries You will need to make sure you are working in line with the Health and Safety guidelines Be punctual and able to work alone and be self motivated. Working hours are 18.00 - 3.30am,working a rotating 5 days including weekends.

Essential Ingredients: To join the Warburtons family as a Driver, you’ll need an LGV Cat C driving license with no more than 6 points. You’ll also have a good knowledge of transport legislation and tachographs, be reliable, responsible and used to working in a fast paced environment, ideally with multi drop experience.

Injury-hit Blues limp into rest week PostSport as Brighton defeat Ashley's team CHICHESTER RFC will swap for the turf for the treatment table as the injury-hit Blues have a rest week to lick their wounds.

Scott Ashley's side lost further ground on the leaders at the top of London Division One South after falling to a 38-26 reverse to Sussex rivals Brighton.

Despite the Blue and Blues sitting third, four spots above their hosts it could - and perhaps should - have been more, with Chi missing 12 regulars. It meant back-to-back defeats for Ashley's team, meaning they are now 12 points behind top spot.

With no game this week, all energies will go into nursing some of those players back to full health ahead of the visit of undefeated league leaders Medway on November 25.

Club spokesman Roger Gould said: "Chi earned a bonus point for their four tries and were in sight of a possible draw before the home team scored in the last minutes.

"However, Brighton were faster in the backs and with excellent support play were able to create several overlaps on the wings."

Chi made a rare bad start, conceding a try after two minutes, with Brighton scoring a second moments later. But Ashley's side

slowly grew into the half, with scrum half diving over to reduce the arrears after a quick tap.

Seaman tied things up on the next attack, throwing a big dummy and then snaking past a tackle to score ten metres left of the upright.

Brighton bagged another try before the half-hour - but Chi tied it up again, Seaman scoring his hat-trick after a forwards drive to make it 17-17 at the break.

The next score was to prove important and it was the white shirts of Brighton that got it, rounding off an overlap despite the pass looking forward.

Any hope of Chi getting something out of the game evaporated shortly after when Seaman was sin-binned for stopping a Brighton attack.

Chi did get a consolation score via a penalty try but Brighton scored again as time ticked down. * Bognor RFC welcome Farnborough to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2pm) as they kick start their Vase campaign.

The Purple and Greens have been performing well in Hampshire One this season and should be firm favourites against a side from a division below them.

RUGBY: Chichester College’s Rugby Academy chalked up their seventh straight league victory with an easy victory over Itchen College.

Having beaten Itchen at the Central Venue event the previous week, the Chi squad was confident going into the match. The Academy was boosted by the return from injury of county loosehead Lewis Woolcombe, who has scored hat tricks in his past two games, and tighthead Alfred Montague. With their forwards dominating from the start, Chi dominated the match - turning a 12-10 half-time lead into an eventual 31-20 victory thanks to three second half tries.

420 sailing class drops in to Itchenor

THE BEST of British flocked to Chichester Harbour as future Olympians faced off in open water.

Fresh from training in Weymouth and Rutland, the International 420 class travelled to Itchenor Sailing Club for a coached open meeting.

The sailors were greeted with unseasonably warm weather, an empty Chichester Harbour and perfect 420 winds of between ten and 20 knots.

Although there was extremely close racing throughout the weekend, results on day one were dominated by Vita Heathcoate and Milly Boyle with four bullets out of five races, showing exceptional speed and boathandling on multiple, tight race courses.

Others threatened, but Eleanor Keers and Aaron Chadwick were the only team to break the perfect streak. Slightly more breeze on Sunday morning saw them open with two wins to briefly challenge for the overall event, before Vita and Milly got back on top form to

win the last three races and, ultimately, the Open meeting.

Eleanor and Aaron finished in second place, followed by Adele Young and Dan Burns in third.

It was a positive weekend of racing for all of those associated with Itchenor, which was celebrating its 90th anniversary after being founded in 1927.

Just a few days earlier, the club's prestigious Mends Cup for the most notable sailing performance of the 2017 season was awarded to Ben Saxton and John Tremlett.

Ben, with his crew Katie Dabson, claimed gold at the first ever foiling Nacra 17 World Championship at La Grande Motte, France, in September.

Meanwhile, John with his crew on Lass won the XOD Captain's Cup in Cowes Week for the fifth consecutive time.

This is an unprecedented feat in the 87-year history of the trophy.

Rutherford 'delighted' as Chi ease into third round of Vase

Pagham find form at last PAGHAM are eyeing up a magnificent seven unbeaten as the Lions look to have finally hit their stride.

Consistency dogged the team from Nyetimber Lane early on this campaign as the new management duo of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds struggled to string results together.

But after being knocked out of the Peter Bentley Cup and FA Vase, the Lions have found their form, putting together a run of six games unbeaten.

The latest was a 6-1 hammering of Eastbourne United in front of a home crowd last weekend.

Those three points lifted Pagham to seventh in the SCFL Premier, within touch of the leading pack.

Tomorrow gives them another opportunity to put pressure on those teams above them as the Lions travel to Newhaven in the league.

The Dockers are a dangerous side, whose midtable position belies the fact they can beat any team in the division on their day.

Much of that is down to the form of their striker Lee Robinson, who is the league's top scorer with 18 goals so far.

Pagham have their own sharpshooter, though, in the form of Dan Simmonds, who has netted ten goals in just six games since his return to the club last month.

He continued his remarkable scoring form last weekend, bagging a hat-trick in the comfortable victory over Eastbourne United.

Simmonds took 12 minutes to open the scoring on Saturday, chipping home after being put free by Andy Chick.

After the visitors equalised, Callum Overton restored the Lions' lead before the break.

Simmonds added his second and Pagham's third just after the restart, taking advantage of a mistake by the opposition goalkeeper.

He then rounded off his hat-trick on the hour mark, seizing on a through ball from Lloyd Rowlatt before stroking home.

There was still time for Overton to add a second and substitute Scott Murfin to take the overall tally to six.

Had it not been for the saves of Eastbourne goalkeeper Phil Hawkins, this could have been Pagham's biggest win in many a year.

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford said he was 'delighted' with his team after his side secured their place in the third round of the FA Vase.

Goals from Scott Jones, Dan Hegarty and Josh Clack helped the Lillywhites to a 3-0 win over Southern Counties East Premier side Deal Town in the midweek match, which was re-arranged because of a waterlogged pitch.

The visitors from Kent, who lifted the Vase at Wembley in 2000, were no match for Chi. Rutherford's attentions now turn back to the SCFL Premier and the visit of AFC Uckfield to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

After the Deal match, Rutherford said, “We're delighted with the result and the performance of every player - not just the 11 that started but from number one to 14 they've all done what was asked of them.

"It's rare that you get all your players doing that. And we're happy, of course, to be through to the next round of the competition."

The win has earned Rutherford's side a trip to Whitstable Town, who they beat in the Vase last season on their way to the last 32, on December 2.

Future looking bright for Sids Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce said he will keep on turning to youth as his side continue to creep up the SCFL Division Two table.

The Sids returned to winning ways last weekend beating Lancing United 2-0 away from home.

Those three points lifted Pearce's side up to fourth in the league, just six points behind leaders Roffey.

With a home match against strugglers Worthing Town to come tomorrow (2pm), that gap may narrow even more.

But it is the spirit and results achieved away

from the Recreation Ground which is pleasing Pearce the most.

He said: "Our pitch is one of the best in the league so we do have to adapt when we go away. Also, we still have got a very young side.

I think at times the average age, apart from the two full backs, has been 19 or 20 years old, which is really encouraging for us moving forward.

"The other week I had three 16-year-olds on the bench. It's all about getting that happy mix and helping the youngsters learn as that's where the future is."

Despite suffering just one defeat in the league this term, it is the Sids' failure to win games which is keeping them out of the promotion places.

But, despite drawing four from 11 matches, Pearce is confident his team remain on track to the ultimate goal of securing promotion at the end of the term.

The former Eastbourne Borough skipper said: "The youngsters, that's the future of the club so there's a real focus on bringing them through into the first team.

"I've had at least half a dozen or eight who have done that this season so we're going the right way."

Things are not looking so rosy along the harbour at Bosham where last season's division two champions are struggling to adapt to life under new manager Gary Lines.

The Robins were imperious last term, strolling to the finish line to be crowned champions.

But this time round, things have not been so easy - with Bosham sitting seventh with more than a third of the season gone.

Lines did have some joy last weekend when his team outclassed Alfold to beat them 4-2 in the first round of the division two cup.

Callum Coker, Callum Fewell, Grant Radmore and Jake Lafferty all scored in the win, which lifts spirits ahead of this weekend's clash with second-placed Jarvis Brook at Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

Chi's Wright upbeat despite Eagles loss CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Matt Wright believes his side remain 'very positive' despite not winning in three matches.

The Green and White Army have performed well in their first season at the FA Women's Premier League South level.

But the past few weeks have seen the injuryhit Chi squad come up short, first by losing out in the league cup then picking up only one point from six on two visits to the capital.

The latter of those two matches was last weekend, which saw Wright's team defeated 4-1 against a strong Crystal Palace team.

The manager admitted his side were hopeful of getting back on track at home to Cardiff City on Sunday (2pm).

Wright said: "Cardiff are a good side and

we will not underestimate them but we are confident going into every game.

"It's nice to be back at home and we will try and play our style of football. We need to be more clinical and hopefully we will take something out of it."

Chi could be boosted with a number of key players returning from injury.

Goalkeeper Sadie Wilson-Blakely and Lauren Cheshire were back in the squad for the Palace trip while Lucie Challen is nearing full fitness.

But it was not enough to halt the Eagles who had striker Gemma Bryan (3) and Nikita Whinnett to thank for the points.

Cherelle Khassal did find a goal for the visitors.

Rocks boss believes side can do no more to end winless run Next Game

ST ALBANS CITY (A) Tomorrow (3pm)

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has warned his team it will not be easy to snap a 13-game winless streak in the league.

The Rocks slipped into the bottom two last weekend after suffering a 2-1 reverse to inform Hampton & Richmond.

With Bognor's last victory in all competitions coming back in September in the FA Cup, the Nyewood faithful have almost forgotten what it is like to celebrate a win.

Hopes are that will change in the coming days, as the Rocks travel to seventh-placed St Albans City tomorrow (3pm) to play a side who have not won in five.

Then, on Tuesday, it's back to the south coast to host FA Cup giantkillers Oxford City (7.45pm).

Speaking to the Post, Pearce warned that the search for three points would not be easy.

He said: "All I know is every day in this league is no easy game. It's a challenge of our ability.

You only have to look at the inconsistency of the results to see that is the case.

"Oxford City may be down the bottom with us but the last two away games they have beaten Chelmsford, who are up the top, and Colchester, who are in the Football League. If anyone thinks it will be an easy game, it won't.

All we can do as a management staff is to make sure the players are in as good as physical and mental condition as they can be."

Bognor's long search for a league win looked

set to end on Saturday against Hampton when Ibra Sekajja scored a well-taken goal.

But a mistake from young midfielder Tommy Block allowed the visitors to equalise before a Doug Tuck conceded a penalty late on to see the Rocks cruelly defeated.

Speaking after the match, Pearce described the match as a 'pleasing performance but a disappointing result', adding: "If it had been a draw neither side could complain, if we won they couldn't complain."

He added: "I've been doing this a long time and I've never known getting beat to do anyone good mentally. We have been very used to winning which becomes a good habit and now we are not winning.

"In some cases that will make individuals stronger and others will look for excuses.

Hopefully, we will all come out of this stronger."

The Rocks have been boosted in recent weeks with the return of skipper Sami El-Abd and Doug Tuck from injury. But Pearce says the search for two more additions continues.

He said: "I think at the moment, given everything that's going on, we're getting maximum out of the players that we have available. But I think in order to be winning regularly at this level I believe we need to sign one or two. I do know there's no-one living within 20 miles of Bognor who is available who would improve us at this time."

FA chief impressed by Bognor HE MAY be one of the most powerful men in English football. But it seems that Bognor Regis has made a real impression on FA chairman Greg Clarke.

The chairman of the English Football Association took advantage of the international break to take in last weekend's match at Nyewood Lane between the Rocks and Hampton & Richmond.

Despite sitting on the FA executive with Clarke, Pearce said it was as much a surprise to him as it was everyone else at the club that the embattled FA chief - who is under-pressure for the way he handled the Eni Aluko case -opted to take in a game on the south coast.

Pearce said: "I didn't arrange it, I think he just picked out a match he wanted to watch.

"He goes around the country a lot watching matches at all levels. I know Greg lives in south London so he probably thought it would be a decent game to watch.

"The first I knew was that his secretary called asking for a ticket to be put on the door.

"Speaking to him afterwards, he thoroughly enjoyed his day. He told me he thought it was a good advert for that level of the game, and he said the pitch, the crowd, the match were all excellent."

IT'S BEEN another frustrating few weeks for me as well as the club.

I'm still out with a shoulder injury. I had an MRI scan on it earlier this week and I'm just waiting to hear from the doc if I need surgery.

It actually feels much better than it has felt for a while, which I suppose is good news.

A few people have asked me what is wrong. Basically, the issue is with a joint that holds the shoulder in place. They think that, when I dislocated the shoulder, the labrum, which holds everything together, was damaged.

They want to put something in there to allow the joint to stay in place and give it more strength.

That's why I went for an MRI scan, although it's not something I relished.

I don't like being in an enclosed space but needs must I suppose if it will help sort out my injury.

Back to the pitch, and the fortnight kicked off with defeat at Braintree.

It's never pleasant to go down within a few seconds.

We had a heated discussion between us as to whether we controlled the game or not after that point.

Some of the lads said that we did, as we had a lot of possession, but the final product wasn't good enough.

The other argument, which is where I stand, was that you can control the ball as much as you want but, if you don't have a shot, then you can't say you're in control.

Defensively, they were very sound, and yes, they sat back, but we didn't create anything.

If it had been 0-0 longer then I think we would have had a shot as the game would have opened up and that would have suited us.

For Hampton, we were much better. I think we needed a home game as it has been a while since we played in front of our home fans.

The big difference, though,

was having Sami back as he is a leader and a bit of a mouth.

We've been lacking that sort of character. He will be the first to admit that he didn't play well on the ball but he marshalled the back four.

It was a shame though that Doug had that lazy leg in the box to give away a penalty, he knows that you can't do at this level. But having said, that we had three chances we should have put away.

Despite a better performance, and looking hard to beat, the result will stay 2-1.

I'm getting fed up with us saying that we played well and didn't win.

It feels like after every match we have the same conversations but there's only so long that you can keep on thinking the results will come.

I feel like we are talking a lot about performance but need to start grinding out results.

We're second bottom and need to start picking up points.

Soon, the pitches are going to cut up and start getting boggier which doesn’t suit us. That makes the next few matches important.

St Albans away tomorrow is another game where no-one expects us to get anything.

But then we have three games in quick succession against sides who are in the bottom half.

I think those games will go a long way to defining our season. If we get six or seven points out of nine then I think we will be fine. If we get nine, then we can move forward.

But one or two - then we will be in a relegation battle.

I'm looking at them and thinking by hook or by crook we will not lose.

Yes, performance is important; but we need points and I don't care how we play in order to get them.

The fans are getting agitated and nervous, but they keep turning up and supporting us. It's us players who need to start performing better.
