Community to fight for A27 BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CAMPAIGN groups and leaders of the community are coming together in unity to propose a new start for the A27. Last week's announcement that the government is scrapping the planned £250m redevelopment of the heavily congested road has shocked and angered
the community. Transport secretary Chris Grayling claimed he made the decision because the consultation and the five options proposed by Highways England were not supported by the local councils. On Monday night, a meeting was called by West Sussex County Council leader, Louise Goldsmith. Louise said: “Following the events of the last week, I thought it imperative that
the community unites to demonstrate our willingness to work together to find a way forward. I am so grateful to everyone who came and for all the views which were expressed. "My wish is that we all now work together to explore the ‘Art of the Possible for Chichester’ and the current challenges we face on the A27. “I was heartened by the response from the community and I think we have a
unique opportunity to now work towards a solution which is right for Chichester.” Chichester MP Andrew Tyrie and Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum were among those who attended the meeting, along with the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, and Chichester College principal Shelagh Legrave OBE. Annual budget of £12m is agreed BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS have agreed a budget of £12.3m for the next year which will see council tax rise by an average of £5 a month. At the full council meeting at Chichester District Council this week, councillors voted unanimously for the budget for 2017/18. THe council tax requirement for the next year totals £7.8m. Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of the council, said: "I am very happy to second this budget - the sixth since I joined the cabinet in 2012. "Over that period we have worked hard to make the best use of council taxpayers’ money." Cllr Dignum referred to several moneysaving schemes the council has made, including outsourcing their leisure centres to save £1.5m per year, updating the car parks with new payment systems and other enhancements and making steady improvements in the waste collection, street cleaning and parks services over the years. He added: "All this has been achieved while avoiding cuts to frontline services and while maintaining support for the most needy in the community, for example, with provision for the homeless and with a generous council tax support scheme." It means that council tax is increased by £5 from £145.81 to £150.81 for a band D equivalent property.
Although the council collects the council tax, this is then distributed to a number of public services. THe council’s share amounts to around nine per cent of the amount paid each year. THat's around £2.90 a week for services provided by the council. THe rest goes to West Sussex County Council (79 per cent), Sussex Police (nine per cent), and parish councils (three per cent on average). Last month, councillors at West Susssex County Council agreed to raise the price of council tax by almost four per cent to fund adult social care. It totals 3.95 per cent - the equivalent of an extra 92 pence per week for the average Band D household. Cllr Richard Plowman added: "THere is no doubt that great challenges are ahead and there is a need to keep expenditure to a minimum and ensure opportunities for income generation but this shouldn't be at the expense of facilities required by the general public." Cllr Bob Hayes said: "THis budget is, I feel, very positive. "We have had to take some very harsh decisions in a climate that's not a good one without losing any staff and maintaining frontline services." Meanwhile, councillors at Chichester District Council's cabinet agreed to provide a grant of £25,000 to St Wilfrid's Hospice. THe money will go towards the hospice's Dreambuilding project to build a brand new centre in Bosham. THe project is costing a total of £15m. THe grant is on top of an additional £25,000 the council has already provided.

Hospital staff show pride in job ST RICHARD'S Hospital has been rated as one of the best places to work or be treated in the NHS by their staff. THe 2016 national NHS Staff Survey results put Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHFT), which runs St Richard's, Worthing and Southlands hospitals, in the top 20 per cent on the key measure of “staff recommendation of the organisation as a place to work or receive treatment”. Some 80 per cent of staff surveyed at WSHFT said they would recommend the standard of care provided by the organisation if a friend or relative needed treatment, compared to 70 per cent across all acute hospital trusts nationally. And 72 per cent of WSHFT
respondents said they would recommend Western Sussex as a place to work. THat's against an average of 62 per cent for all hospitals nationwide. WSHFT chief executive Marianne Griffiths said: “Nobody knows our hospitals better than the people who work in them, so it’s fantastic news for patients that they have such confidence in the care we provide, particularly during a period in which pressure on services has never been higher. “It’s great that our staff are so willing to recommend us as a place to work because it’s only through being able to recruit and retain the very best people that we can provide the very best care."

Deliveroo set to arrive in Chichester
Kids drive to their surgery! BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk SICK children are being given the opportunity to drive the world’s smallest Rolls-Royce on their way to having an operation. THe Rolls-Royce SRH has been handbuilt especially for St Richard's Hospital’s paediatric day surgery unit after the NHS trust’s dedicated charity Love Your Hospital approached the luxury car manufacturer for support. THe hospital had a jeep but it had grown tired so when a very special mini Rolls-Royce arrived it was an instant hit with children, families and staff alike. Paediatric matron Sue Nicholls said: “It’s wonderful seeing a smiley face on the way to theatre, rather than an apprehensive one, and everyone caring for children at St Richard’s is so grateful to Rolls-Royce for this unique donation." Molly Matthews, eight, and Hari Rajyaguru, seven, welcomed the car to
its new home, one week after its official unveiling at the home of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, near Chichester. Molly, who attends Southbourne Junior School, said: “I felt like a princess driving the car - it’s really amazing and I think it will make other children who are having treatment feel much better.” Hari’s mum, Asmita, said: “Without the team at St Richard’s, Hari wouldn’t have survived leukaemia and just as the nurses at St Richard’s do all they can to help children have a positive experience, this car will also be a wonderful distraction for the children. "THey will forget their pain and this will make their hospital visit memorable for the right reasons.” Marianne Griffiths, chief executive, of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Just like the joy it will bring to our young patients, the Rolls-Royce SRH is simply priceless. It is a very special gift and one of the most wonderful donations ever received by Love Your Hospital."

Council bids to help raise awareness EMPLOYEES at Chichester District Council are being trained to recognise the signs of mental health issues. THe council has signed an employer pledge with Time to Change, the growing social movement run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, which support people to open up to mental health problems. THe council has submitted an action plan outlining all the activities it will undertake to promote wider awareness of mental health issues. It includes recruiting and training volunteer workplace wellbeing champions; delivering and promoting activities that support positive mental health and emotional wellbeing and encouraging staff to make pledges. Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at the council, said: "We are delighted to sign the pledge and help raise awareness of mental health. “Nine in ten people who have experienced a mental health problem have faced negative treatment from others as a result. "We are committed to tackling mental health stigma and changing how we all act and think about mental health. We will continue to support our staff through training, wellbeing activities and much more.”

New project helps support children BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk FAMILIES and infants are being promised more help under a new manifesto. THe 1001 Critical Days Manifesto for West Sussex highlights the importance of a child’s wellbeing during the vital days from when a baby is conceived until they reach their 2nd birthday. THe manifesto states that “radical change is needed to focus our services on the first 1,001 critical days”. THe ambition is for every baby to receive sensitive, appropriate and responsive care. It also works to ensure that all parents feel confident that they are raising their child in a loving and supportive environment. At the launch event, Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “West Sussex services and professionals already recognise the significance of help early on and as a county we have been praised for our work. “THis manifesto puts in place a secure foundation to build upon. "It’s a really positive start to ensuring our residents are receiving the support they and their loved ones need for the best start in life.” Parliamentary early years adviser Clair Rees said: “Infant and early mental health development is an opportunity in which to lay the foundations of the mind
for good mental health. “It matters because prevention is cure. We can grow and evolve our knowledgebase as a society, in order to take collective responsibility for our youngest citizens - strengthening together the village around the infantfamily”. Stephen Hillier, county council cabinet member for children - start of life, added: “In West Sussex, there are approximately 9,000 births every year, that’s a potential 18,000 residents who are seeking help and guidance. "Our parents should feel confident, happy and supported during this important and emotional time. “THe manifesto covers different aspects of what might be needed in those critical first days from online information and support classes to integrated service data and joint assessments. "We know that these points are integral to doing the right thing for our residents.” West Sussex-based services and professionals who work with families and children within this age group are being asked to support the manifesto by visiting westsussex.gov.uk/1001Days. Organisations already signed up include the maternity teams from St Richard’s NHS Hospital Foundation Trust, Surrey and East Surrey NHS Hospital Trust as well as Sussex Community NHS Trust. West Sussex County Council is the second council in the country to commit to a 1001 Critical Days manifesto following in the footsteps of Northampton County Council in 2016.

Next step in development of new houses in the city BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A TURF cutting ceremony has marked the start of construction of a brand new development of affordable homes in North Mundham, near Chichester. Leading social housing provider Stonewater is working with local developers Hamlet Homes and Chichester District Council on the scheme, which will provide 25 muchneeded affordable homes for rent and shared ownership in Stoney Meadow. Located just off School Lane, opposite the village hall and North Mundham Primary School, the development will include one, two and three bedroom houses, bungalows and apartments for a mixture of affordable rent and low-cost shared ownership. Carol Purnell, cabinet member for housing and environment services at Chichester District Council, said: “I am very pleased that work is starting on this site. "THere is a huge demand for genuinely affordable housing across our district and so this development will be vital in helping people to stay in their community.” It comes at a time when the average cost of a home in Chichester, at £410,771, is 15 times the average local salary, while private sector rents are almost half of local workers’ take home pay.
Adopt to give children a happy home PEOPLE who are considering adoption are being urged to get in contact with West Sussex County Council. More than 30 children, including very young children, are expected to need new families in the coming months. THe call comes during LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week which aims to spread the message that sexuality is not a barrier to fostering and adoption. Stephen Hillier, county council cabinet member for children - start of life, said: “In the past year, we have given around 40 children new families through adoption. “THese children may have had traumatic experiences so people who are considering adoption need to be prepared for a thorough assessment process as we make sure they are ready for a new member of their family. "But it will all be worth it as the second chance which these children get through adoption cannot be underestimated.” Adoptive parents, through a legal process, take on full parental responsibility for a child. People have to be over the age of 21 but do not have to be married or in a relationship to adopt a child. Marie Riordan, regional development manager for Stonewater said: “High private rents and unaffordable house prices in the Chichester area are forcing young people and their families out of the local community and further away from where they live and work. “THese new homes at Stoney Meadow address a real need in the village for genuinely affordable homes which are vital to sustaining local shops, businesses and services.” Stonewater has financed the scheme which has received a contribution of £595,000 funding from the Homes and Communities Agency. THe development is due for completion in March next year. Denia Turnbull, chairman of North Mundham Parish Council, said: “THis is a significant development in our village. "However, we look forward to welcoming the new residents who we hope will integrate and participate fully in our vibrant community."

Community workshops to help find a solution to A27 BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk Continued from page one THe council has now confirmed that the intention is to arrange community workshops to draw on the expertise and knowledge of people locally and to bring in outside experience and impartiality where needed to bring a solution to the A27 crisis. Louise added: “Last year’s consultation should have been conducted in a more open and transparent manner and now we have been able to see and study the results we can see that the outcome fully demonstrates that this was a flawed consultation process, and one rightly not acceptable to our community. “THe process so far and the options which were put forward were not good enough. "Now it’s up to us to find the best solution for this wonderful city and convince the Secretary of State to reconsider his decision. “We don’t have all the answers and we don’t know when this will reach a conclusion, but we do know that the community of Chichester will do all it can to secure the improvements we all desperately need.” Chris Page from campaign group Best4Chichester was among those at the meeting. He was disappointed that the northern bypass options were removed from the public consultation. Speaking of last week's announcement, he said: "I find it incredible. It's incredible that the secretary of state who is responsible for the strategic road network should suddenly withdraw all
the funding for it because people don't like the options that have been put on the table. "What I have always said is that every town and city the size of Chichester needs a bypass. "It's a road that separates local traffic from through traffic. "We need a bypass. How we do that, I'm not sure. "THere were two very good if expensive options which involved taking the road round to the north. "Whatever happens, none of the options proposed by Highways England would work. "THe money for this particular project has now been withdrawn. Chichester is facing even more catastrophic congestion than it faces normally." Councillor Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: "THe A27 is of vital importance generally to the economy of West Sussex and of south east England and of course to the people of Chichester and we have to do something about it. "We can't live with the current congestion. What we've got to find is a solution which is broadly accepted by the whole community."
THE Green Party has expressed relief that the planned scheme has been withdrawn by the government. City councillor Sarah Sharp said it was the best option: "We are certainly relieved that this scheme has been taken off the drawing board. "It has proved to be a huge waste of resources and has only caused division and heartache. "A much better way forward would have been to have worked out a solution beforehand by consulting
with all different neighbourhoods. "Now we are being left with a feeling that we have been left to sort out our own transport solutions. "We need to heal divisions. I am confident that this can be done, this will happen and with the consultation fiasco now over we can get down to the real work of planning our whole transport system, not just one road. Road building is a 1970s solution and doesn't solve our problems going into the next decade."

Charity shop still trading PEOPLE are being encouraged not to be put off visiting a charity shop which is having work carried out. THe St Wilfrid's Hospice Furniture and Donation Centre in the Summersdale Outlet at Lavant Road, Chichester, is being refurbished in preparation for THe Co-op taking over the vacant convenience store later this year. THe work is due to continue until around mid summer. THe shop will continue to trade although there will be some noise and disturbance as the work will encroach on their floor space. Siobhan Robinson, head of retail, said: “We can assure the public that we are not closing and that we will continue to trade as usual. Excitement builds ahead of festival's biggest event yet BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE ORGANISER of this year's Priory Park festival has said it will be bigger and better than last year as excitement builds ahead of its return this summer. Taking place on Friday, July 7, Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9, guests include frontman of THe Stranglers Hugh Cornwell, Tony Christie, S Club, Dodgy, Georgie Fame, Deborah Bonham, THe Christians and Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band. Billed as ‘an eclectic weekend,’ the live music and arts event is held annually as part of the Festival of Chichester. THe inaugural Priory Park Festival last year attracted thousands of people to the historic park. THe line-up included Sophie Ellis Bextor, THe Feeling, Seth Lakeman and Courtney Pine. In an exclusive chat with THe Chichester Post, organiser Robin Bextor said: "It is great news to be back, bigger and better. "We have had a lot of feedback from people about last year, so we have more local artists, better food and drink, and non-stop music. "We have also managed to reduce the day ticket prices, which is great. "THere will still be some surprise star guests and even the occasional comedian popping up."
THe popularity of last year's festival means that this year, the team has introduced a second stage. Robin added: "I am really proud of the Sussex music scene, so we can reflect that. "Also, as the festival reputation grows, we can attract bigger and better stars. Support and inspiration for women as town joins in worldwide event 'COMBINED solutions' was the theme of the International Women's Day event held at the Regis Centre on Wednesday. In full the theme was focused on the combined burden of violence, abuse and poverty in the lives of women, an issue many people were keen to address on the day. Enthusaistic organisations, companies and individuals gathered to share their ideas and support and were joined by members of the public interested in making a change. Alongside stalls providing information on support groups and charities, there were fundraising stalls set up to raise money for important causes, trial sessions for different types of therapies such as massage and raiki, and a series of talks taking place on the stage of the Alexandra THeatre. THis year, the all-day event was sponsored by My Sisters' House, a local Women's Centre dedicated to helping vulnerable women of all ages and backgrounds. THe centre's founder, Julie Budge, spoke of how pleased she was to see so many people involved with the day. She said: "It has been really amazing today. "I've had some great conversations with people who are recognising important issues faced by women." THat was a key part of the day: communication. Members of different organisations found they were able to easily discuss their work with other groups, something they don't always have the chance to do.
Workers from social care and health charity CGL (Change, Grow, Live) expressed how the the event would benefit their future endeavours. Vivian Hawes, of CGL, said: "It has been wonderful. "We've gathered information about other services and help available for the people we look after. "It's important to know what other groups are out there in order to create a network of support." THe day was opened by West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith, who emphasised the event's priorites of comradery and change. She said: "It is such a great time to come together to celebrate where we've come from and where we're going." THese sentiments were echoed in her speech in the theatre auditorium that officially opened the day. She compared the status of women now to what it was when the first (unofficial) International Women's Day took place in 1914. She said: "THat period of time was the start of the real liberation for women. "Since then, we've moved forward. In 1914, I would not have been stood here as leader of a county council. "THe doors have been opened by those women. However, I'm saddened that although these doors have been opened, not all women will make it through." She urged the audience to act upon this and said: "THe first step for these women is to make it through the door to My Sisters' House." THe impact of women who fought for their rights 100 years ago was never far
from the thoughts of those attending the day. Kevin Page, from THe Votes For Women Centenary Group, was there to provide the public with an in-depth history of the suffragette movement in our local area. He explained why he was involved. He said: "It is important people are aware about what they did. It is a shame now that there is still massive inequality. THere's a long way to go." Looking to the future, however, was also considered essential. Stacey Addison from the University of Chichester was there as to provide social media coverage. She was especially enthusiastic about the collection of selfie-cards available to the public on which inspirational messages were written such as: "I will be bold and challenge gender inequality." Stacey was pleased to see how many members of the public were involved. She said: "It's been really great. THere was a queue out of the door this morning." Interactive art stations were also set-up to highlight the importance of working together. In particular the hand-weaving piece represented connectivity. People were asked to add their own piece of string to the hand, eventually creating a web-like effect. Furthering this idea Louise Goldsmith emphasised how all people must stand together for change, regardless of gender, age or background. She said: "You are all invited to fight against gender inequality... We all have a worth: men and women."

` Scouts benefit from last meeting SCOUTS in Barnham were among the groups to benefit from the final funds to be donated by a committee. THe 1st Barnham Scout Group was given £1,050 towards new tents by the joint downlands area committee among the more than £4,000 donated by its parish, district and county councillors at their last meeting. Cllr Nigel Peters, the committee's chairman, said: “Over the years, the joint downlands area committee has had the privilege of supporting many inspirational groups here in the Arun district. “We were so pleased to receive applications from such a variety of worthwhile projects at this most recent round of funding. “While this, sadly, was the last time we will be meeting as a committee, I am pleased to announce groups will still have the opportunity to apply for funding in the future.” THe region previously covered by the committee - Arundel, the Six Villages, Findon and the surrounding villages - is being divided between the joint eastern and joint western area committees in cutbacks led by West Sussex County Council. THe final meeting took place in Arundel and also saw money donated to Home-Start Arun (£417.15), Walberton Pavilion (£509) and Walberton Village Hall (£1,679.99). THe Community Initiative Funding for groups in the area will still be available from the new committees.

Residents step into past to learn about church's history

HISTORY from four centuries was on show to give Pagham's parish church a future. THe artefacts formed part of a heritage day at St THomas a'Becket Church to add to its Raise the Roof appeal for essential works. Well over a hundred people went along to the occasion to be delighted and intrigued by the range of reminders of the past on display. THey included the church's Bible from 1639 to 20th century documents. Valerie Roberts, 75, of Nyetimber, and her husband, Brian, 77, were pleased to see details of their sons' confirmations in the church's official register. Adrian was confirmed in February, 1979, and Martin in February, 1981. Mrs Roberts said: "It's lovely to see their confirmations. It's the first time we have seen them in the register. I can't believe how long ago they were." Pagham resident Michael King, 81, also found the details of the confirmations of his sons - Andrew in November, 1975, and David in February, 1979. "David has gone on to be a vicar in Eastbourne," he said. "It's great to see this information and I remember the service. I was also involved in the 78 Club. I was asked with two others by the then vicar, the Rev John Maynard, if we would run it and so we did. "It started off in the church vestry and then moved into the church hall in
Nyetimber Lane. THere were about 20 members. "I had to give up after a while and the vicar's wife, Beryl, took over the club." THe club was among the historical information in a whistlestop tour of 800 years of the history of the church by one of its churchwardens, Stephen CoxRusbridge. His illustrated presentation also touched upon a suicide in the church, archaeological work and the controversial words of one press-loving vicar, the Rev Grosvenor Goode Knox, in his 51 years in charge. "He loved being in the papers," said Mr Cox-Rusbridge. "At one time he was quoted as referring to Bognor Regis as the daughter of Pagham's church and Aldwick as the grand-daughter. Once again, Pagham's historic importance is put out there. " St THomas a'Becket stands on the site of a place of Saxon worship and can trace its history through Norman, Elizabethan and the following eras as it has evolved to provide a mix of continuity and change. But £250,000 is required to carry out extensive works on the church's roof to prevent stop rain getting into the church. A bid for some £200,000 has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the work. THe success of the history open day will add to the £70,000 the church members have raised since last year.

Tyler's cause is set to hit milestone A THOUSAND gifts of kindness is the next goal of a Barnham teenager's charity. Tyler's Trust is closing in on the target of boxes packed with toys and practical items since it was set up by Tyler Murphy just over three years ago. Tyler, 19, began to put together the presents after his experience being treated for a brain tumour made him aware of a lack of help for young patients. THe trust's aim is to provide each child with a unique and personalised gift box of presents such as balloons, bandanas, head scarf, teddy bear, mug, beaker, journal, pens, sweets and a voucher. THe good cause has grown into a registered charity backed by DJ and television star Fearne Cotton, former Southampton and Wales keeper Paul Jones and Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs. Janice Ellis, Tyler's mum, said: "We have given out 250 gift boxes to young patients like Tyler as well as double that number to their parents and siblings, to take the total up to as many as 750. "When we first had to go in an ambulance to Southampton with Tyler, we couldn't even clean our teeth. It's so hard for the families who find themselves in the position we did. We want parents in that situation now to at least be able to wash
and do their teeth. "We've expanded the area we cover to the Chichester, Worthing, Portsmouth and Southampton hospital regions. We will not get any bigger but we want to increase the service we offer to local families by putting items in parents' rooms at the hospitals. "It's very expensive for the families when children are seriously ill. It means they are treated at Southampton from here and that's a lot of money for petrol and parking with all the frequent visits needed." Trust treasurer Michelle Dodd said: "I don't think people can believe what goes into a box. THey are quite large and there's a lot of things we can get into them." Toys, baby clothes and cot sheets are among the goods starting to be supplied to the hospitals by the trust. It was in 2010 that Tyler started suffering severe headaches and sickness at night. A scan revealed he had a brain tumour and he was instantly referred to hospital in Southampton. A large amount of the tumour was removed. He continues to undergo treatment but his devotion to the trust has never wavered. Jackie said: "Tyler has been really ill but the trust is so important to him. He had to have very risky surgery last year but he delayed it until after our first family fun day so he could be there."

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a burglary in Church Road, Yapton. Between 5.45am and 5.50am on February 22, the home owner, a 37-year-old man, was woken by the sounds of someone trying to break into his garage where his car is kept. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "It appears as though the suspects have attempted to push the car, a classic Beetle, out of the garage before they were disturbed by the victim. "THey made off with some tools. Town could follow Sheffield's example MICHAEL PALIN is a fan of winter gardens. THe famous broadcaster, author, traveller and former Monty Python star is the patron of Sheffield's version of the botanical focal point. THe South Yorkshire's city's site is the inspiration for the ambitious £50m-plus scheme put forward for Bognor Regis. Arun District Council members on Wednesday backed the 11 decisions by the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee last week to begin the initial work to turn the design into reality for the Regis Centre site. If the proposals do end decades of searching for a successful regeneration scheme, the town will be following the multi-award-winning example of Sheffield's version. Michael Palin, a native of Sheffield, is
quoted saying about the stunning green world with more than 2,500 plants from around the globe: "THe Winter Garden is absolutely beautiful. THe scale of it is very powerful. I love the use of timber. You tend to see an awful lot of concrete in city centres around this country and it's nice to see that this is made of wood and seems a very organic building. "I love the fact that it's close to the Millennium Galleries, which is another very striking building. It's great that people will be able to move between the two. In the past, there have been buildings in Sheffield that have not been that great and it's fantastic that there are two examples of top class architecture so close together in the city centre. It's wonderful." A spokesman for Sheffield City Council said: "We have approximately 1.8m
visitors a year as recorded on our people counters. THis does not always reflect people travelling to Winter Garden as a final destination, as many are using the building as a walk-through, in line with its design concept. "But the building continues to attract high visitor numbers and is still a muchloved attraction and meeting point in the heart of the city centre." Work began on Sheffield's Winter Garden after the extension to the town hall was demolished. It opened in 2002, having been conceived as a covered galleria and an integral part of the network of pedestrian streets which forms a pedestrian hub with the Millennium Galleries linking the civic, arts and university quarters of Sheffield to create a cultural route through to the city centre. THe building is 70m long and 22m high and large enough to house 5,000 domestic greenhouses. Pevsner's Architectural Guide to Sheffield states: "THe soaring arches and curved glass roof of the exotically planted Winter Garden is a skilful blend of the traditions of glass-roofed public spaces established in the 19th century by glasshouses, shopping arcades and railway stations. "...its frame is formed from 21parabolic arches of laminated strips of untreated larch, which are gradually weathering to a silvery grey. Slender timber purlins and glazing bars create a fine framework between the arches to hold over 2,000sq

Eagle-eyed volunteers collected a bag of discarded items every six minutes during last weekend's event in Bluebell Wood. THeir community-minded efforts with the gardening gloves and litter-pickers saw a total of 1,760 litres - or 22 bags - of debris picked up from a few hundred metres of the site between the High Street and Butlin's. THe litter-pick was part of the Great British Spring Clean weekend last Saturday and organised by the Bognor Regis in Bloom working party. Rebecca Vervecken, the working party's organiser, said: "THere have been 12 of us in all picking up the litter. THey included the town's mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon. "It feels like we have done something positive. I think we have done a great job between us. Every little helps to keep the town clean. "I've lost count of the number of tins of alcohol I've picked up from the bushes. Most of them have still had drink inside them." THis was the second year in which the area, which has a cyclepath and footpath running alongside it, had been the focus of a community spruce up. THe event in 2016 took place as part of the nationwide Clean for the Queen celebrations to mark the monarch's 90th birthday. But Rebecca, who works for Bognor Regis Town Council, said tackling litter was a neverending battle. "It's a constant job to keep areas like this clear of litter. Even as we've been doing this, people have thrown items into the areas of

Olympic great Sally backs rescue charity f Supporters at Back to the 60s
Sixties fun is big boost for trust LOOKING back half a decade has helped the Aldingbourne Trust look forward. THe charity benefited from the latest Back to the 60s revival at the Riverside Caravan Centre in Bognor Regis. A staggering 500 people attended and enjoyed great music from a series of original artists. THeir generosity and enjoyment of a great night out ensured £5,178.21 was raised for the trust's work with adults with learning disabilities. Trust managing director Sue Livett, pictured far right with revellers, said: "It was an amazing event with great music organised by a fabulous team who generously gave all the profits to the Aldingbourne Trust."
THe 1960s occasion was the latest of the annual nostalgic trips back in time staged at the venue in Shripney Road. Musicians who took part included Johnny Devlin & THe Detours and friends, THe Diamonds with Pete Manville, THe Fenmen with Roy Haines, THe Southbeats, Cosy and Colin Madeley. THey came from across the UK and as far away as Italy and gave their time for free. THe caravan centre provided the venue free of charge and Yamaha Music provided prizes such as a guitar and keyboard. THe keyboard's winner immediately donated it to the trust's Access Music project.

FORMER Olympic champion Sally Gunnell has joined volunteers who help to rescue vulnerable people around Sussex. THe 400m hurdler has become the patron of Sussex Search and Rescue. THe group is the primary volunteer resource used by Sussex Police to search for missing people. THe charity is on call 24 hours every day throughout the year and receives no government funding. And the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles gold medal winner, Sally Gunnell, OBE, has decided to back its efforts. THe 50-year-old, from Steyning, said: “I am delighted to be able to support such a wonderful charity. THe service that Sussex Search and Rescue offers is vital for our community and these volunteers give so much time and effort to help those who need them the most across Sussex." Sally retired as a competing athlete in September, 1997, after a running career which saw her claim two Olympic, three World, two European and six Commonwealth medals. She is the only female 400m hurdler to have won the Olympic and world titles and broken the world record. Danny Wood, chairman at Sussex Search and Rescue, said: “Sally Gunnell is one of Britain’s greatest ever athletes and we are proud to be able to call her our patron. We are excited to have Sally on board."

I also love their flavoursome soups: both tomato and basil, and leek and potato which are equally nourishing and warming, perfect for the cold weather. Priced at only £3.50 for the soup and a crusty bread roll, it is such good value. THeir menu also includes such tasty delights as fillet steaks, beef and chicken burgers, and a range of sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and salads. Clock House Cafe prides itself on its homemade delights. THe cottage pie, macaroni cheese, chilli con carne and chicken jalfrezi boast a real freshness that only comes with homemade meals. Can sleep affect weight gain? HAVE you ever considered that your weight gain may be something to do with how many hours of sleep you are getting? Being short on sleep has been proven to directly affect your weight. THink of it this way... while you weren't sleeping, your body cooked up a perfect recipe for weight gain. Here’s how: When you’re short on sleep, it’s easy to lean on a large milky coffee and a butter croissant to get moving in the morning. You might be tempted to skip exercise because you are simply too tired. THen the downward spiral begins! You nibble on biscuits and cake all day, get a takeaway or ready meal for dinner, and find yourself going to bed late because you’re uncomfortably full. More than a third of us aren't getting enough sleep on a regular basis, and experts agree that getting enough zzz’s is as important to your health, wellbeing, and your weight, as diet and exercise. You see, sleep is like nutrition for the brain. Most people need between seven and nine hours each night. Get less than that, and your body will react in ways that lead even the most determined dieter straight to the ice cream pot! Why? Because insufficient sleep impacts your hunger and fullness hormones, including two called ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin signals to your brain that it’s time to eat. When you’re sleep-deprived, your body makes more ghrelin. Leptin, on the other hand, cues your brain to put the fork down.

Magnesium is a great mineral to help encourage sleep, as is passionflower, valerian and St Johns Wart. Put a spring in your step with Majestic wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys
AS WE enter the merry month of March, with spring lurking around the corner with almost mercurial haste, twas indeed Majestic advertising the most enticing offers - so I duly headed off in that direction in search of quality wines! In terms of white wines, one of my favourite wines there is the Montagny Premier Cru Les Millières 2015, a wine that exudes freshness, balanced acidity and citrussy lightly buttered flavours. THis 2015 vintage, like its predecessor, is a delectable example of an oak-free white burgundy and presents as pleasingly soft on the palate with peach , pear and acacia aromas . If one of six bottles, it is competitively priced between ten and eleven pounds and would grace any dinner party! An Antipodean alternative then caught my eye in the form of a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc regally entitled THe King's Favour from the much-vaunted Marlborough region of New Zealand. Somewhat less explosive in the mouth than the 2015 version, the product of winemaker Brent Marris, a descendent of the noble De Marisco family, whose members fell in and out of favour with
the English monarchy in the 12th and 13th centuries. Feeling mildly effervescent, I next ventured to the sparkling section and preferred a New Zealand NV sparkling wine to the Champagne on offer at £15.99, if one of six. INGREDIENTS • 1kg/2lb 2oz feather blade steak, trimmed and cut into 250g/10oz pieces • 3 tbsp oil • 3 banana shallots or 1 medium onion, sliced • 2 celery sticks, trimmed, sliced • 2 carrots, thickly sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 250ml/10fl oz red wine • 500ml/17fl oz beef stock • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 bay leaf • 1 tsp English mustard • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Braised feather blade beef Method Preheat the oven to 160C/320F/ Gas 3. Season the beef on both sides with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Heat one tablespoon of the oil in a large heavy-based frying pan. Fry the steak pieces over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until browned. Transfer the beef pieces to a casserole dish. (You may need to do this in batches.) Return the frying pan to the hob and reduce the heat. Add the remaining oil and gently fry the shallots, celery and carrots for 6-8 minutes or until golden-brown and softened. Stir in the garlic, cook for a further minute and add the mixture to the casserole. Deglaze the pan with wine and allow to bubble for a few seconds, stirring constantly and pour over the meat and vegetables. Stir the stock and the tomato purée. Strip the thyme leaves from the stalks and scatter into the pan, add the bay leaf and mustard and stir until
well combined. Bring to the boil and remove the dish from the heat. Cover the surface of meat and liquid carefully with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place a lid on top and cook in the oven for 3-3½ hours or until the beef is very tender. Skim any fat away from the surface that appears during cooking. Transfer the meat to a plate. Strain the cooking liquor and vegetables through a sieve into a large non-stick frying pan. Press the vegetables with the bottom of a ladle to extract a rich purée and stir into the cooking liquor. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is well reduced, thick and glossy. Add the beef to the liquid and heat through for 3-4 minutes, spooning over the sauce to glaze. Serve with some green vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Community News & Views PUTTING spare time to good use will be the subject of a special evening this month. Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester is staging the occasion to provide information about becoming a charity trustee. Its Introduction to Trusteeship evening will take place from 5.30pm-7.30pm on March 20 at THe Loft at THe Body Shop in Watersmead in Littlehampton. THose who go along will be able to find out how they can use their skills and experience to help the community around Bognor Regis and Chichester to thrive. In return, they will gain new skills and training, increase their knowledge of the voluntary sector and build rewarding and successful partnerships with their fellow trustees. Mark Spofforth, the West Sussex High Sheriff, said he agreed with recent research that showed volunteering - either by helping directly or acting as a charity trustee - was good for an individual's health. "THe speed we all live our lives these days, and coping with the pace of change, can be daunting. Taking a little time out to help others seems to enable people to achieve greater balance in their lives - and most say they get far more back from volunteering than they put in. "Employers recognise this and support and encourage staff to give their time, making promotion and recognition more likely," he said. Mark will be hosting the evening and Voluntary Action for Arun and Chichester is working with the Deputy Lieutenants of the county, the Royal Society of Arts, the Small Charities Coalition and THe Body Shop to encourage as many people as possible to find out more about the role of trustees. THe relaxed and informal evening will be the ideal chance for individuals to find out about the role and see if becoming a trustee is suitable for them. Trustees are the individuals who take decisions at the governing body of a charity. THe decisions they make impact on people's lives and make a difference to the area in which the charity operates. WEST SUSSEX Partners in Care (WSPiC), the local notfor-profit care association representing care provider services across West Sussex, is holding a one-day symposium on March 20 in Billingshurst which will address end of life care in the county. THe aim of the event is to inform, debate and share issues concerning how we best support individuals in the terminal stages of life so that they achieve a ‘good death’. THe symposium, which brings together social care and health professions, is entitled ‘YODO’ – You Only Die Once: Getting it right every time, and will offer delegates choices from a programme of 17 sessions which include personal testimony from relatives whose loved one’s wishes on how they wanted to die were supported and achieved, in contrast to cases where such planning and support was lacking. Attendees will hear about important work being undertaken around West Sussex to support those approaching end of life;
how that support can differ markedly across the county and what professionals and caring organisations can do to share the best practice which is occurring. Lou Bruce, WSPiC director and care home owner, highlights the ECHO Project (End of Life Care Hub) as an example. "THis has been the most productive working group I have been involved in, a real drive and commitment supporting end of life care," he said. Speakers at the event include Dr Sarah Russell (Hospice UK) discussing real world advance care planning. Fellow contributors will address legalities in end of life care, the importance of education and training, and the part played by supporting excellence in care within residential settings or the individual’s home to reduce the need for admission to hospital at end of life. Places at the symposium can be booked via the WSPiC website with a fee for delegates from non-WSPiC member organisations.
Dear Sir, Both Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council must take much of the blame for all the options for upgrading the A27 being dropped. THe cancellation of the upgrade was confirmed by Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport, in a letter to both leaders and our MP, Andrew Tyrie, on February 28. I quote: ‘I have considered all representations and understand that this is a controversial scheme. THe support and funding contribution by the local authorities are both vital to its successful delivery. After the withdrawal of support by the local councils for the shortlisted options and significant local campaigns, I am cancelling this scheme.' I fully support the comments made to all district councillors by Mark Dunn and also those stated by the MP for Arundel and South Downs, Nick Herbert, who said: ‘those who campaigned against improvements to the A27 southern bypass have inflicted a massive own goal on West Sussex, by lobbying for an unfeasible northern bypass and undermining the process. THey have effectively lost £200 million of infrastructure investment in the area.’ As the district councillor who represents Westhampnett and Lavant, I have continuously spoken against any northern option as this would have dissected these communities. A northern bypass would also have caused the closure of the international motor sports events at Goodwood, resulting in many thousands of pounds loss to the local economy. It would also have completely destroyed the southern boundary of the national park with increased noise and light pollution. THe South Downs National Park also made the following statement: ‘THere is a strong presumption against any significant road widening or the building of new roads through a [national park] unless it can be shown there are compelling reasons for the new or enhanced capacity and with any benefits outweighing the costs significantly. Any investment in trunk roads should be directed to developing routes for long distance traffic which avoids the Parks.’ THere is a considerable sum of money available from the Community Infrastructure Levy for junction improvements on the A27 from the developments in the Local Plan at Westhampnett and White House Farm. Surely, with county council elections looming in May, it’s now time for positive leadership and community cohesion from the prospective candidates to state their commitment to upgrading the existing A27 and to work closely with residents during the works. TROLLEY rounds are continuing as a charity at a Chichester charity gets ready to move into new premises. THe Friends of Chichester Hospitals is maintaining its daily service to the bedsides of patients before it is able to occupy a site in the outpatients' entrance area at St Richard's Hospital. THe daily visits to the wards enable the patients to buy items such as newspapers and magazines, toiletries, drinks and bottles of squash. Jane Ramage, the chairman of the Friends, said: "We are carrying on normally as far as possible. We will welcome all our customers back when we open in our new premises." She added it the Friends were still unsure how long it would take before they were able to open their new shop. THe Friends were based in a shop at the main entrance to the hospital for more than 20 years. But bosses of the hospital's operating trust have allowed the site to be redeveloped by Compass Group for a shop.

Dear Sir THank you for Sylvia Endacott's Changing Times article 'Clowns from around the world invaded town', about the origins of the International Clowns Convention. I am, however, astonished she could write the entire onepage article without a single mention of Hal Brooks! Hal, whose clown persona of 'Kerby Drill' many will remember, not least because of his many activities in teaching schoolchildren about road safety, was if my memory serves, the prime mover and chief champion for the first Clown Convention in Bognor, and it simply wouldn't have happened without him. I'm sure there are others who can provide much more about Hal's efforts towards the establishment of the clowns convention, so perhaps this dreadful omission can be addressed in a later article. History of city grocery shop goes back a long way as generations played their part By staff at The Novium Museum SHARP Garland’s grocery shop once stood on the north-east corner of Eastgate Square, Chichester. THe original building was demolished in 1964 and replaced in the late 1970s/early 1980s by a more modern building named Sharp Garland House, after the grocery store which once stood in its place. THe building is currently mostly occupied by flats and shops. Sharp Garland Grocer’s was once reputed to have been the oldest continuously running grocery business in the country, and is believed to have been founded by John Smith in 1665. THe museum holds a traders token believed to relate to the business. Ownership of the business changed hands multiple times to different dignitaries and local people important to Chichester, including various members of the Hardham family. In 1860, the grocers was purchased from the Hardhams by Sharp Garland who had been born in Petworth in 1832. THe business remained under the Garland family name for 104 years. THe Garland family played a major role in the civic life of the city. Garland became Mayor of Chichester in 1878, and continued in that role for a further four occasions. His son, Sharp Archibald Garland, was Mayor seven times, most importantly during the First World War. In 1914, Mayor Sharp Archibald Garland was appointed City Recruiting Officer.

During the war, the Mayor was involved in raising funds for the war effort, as well as making a number of personal contributions. He obtained subscriptions for a relief fund to be sent to soldiers at war. In January, 1918, he was knighted and in 1920 he received the Freedom of the City. He presided over initial meetings to decide on a suitable War Memorial, which was eventually built, in 1921, in Eastgate Square, near the Sharp Garland shop. In 1910, when cars were first seen in Chichester, it is believed Alderman Sharpe Garland had the first local registration, PO1. Both father and son were involved in the corporation of St Pancras. THe fourth and final generation of the Garland family was Miss Cora Garland, who died in 1958. THe building was ultimately owned by Alfred Peat and, in 1964, it was declared unsafe and was beyond repair, the interior remaining largely unchanged since the 18th century. Peat had started at the shop as an errand boy during the 1890s, being paid five shillings a week, before gradually working his way up until he became the owner. While working at the shop in 1901, he was living at 7 Orchard Place with his parents Frederick and Frances and two older brothers, Henry and Frederick. His father and brother Frederick were both cabinet makers. In later life, Alfred lived in Tower Street. He was a volunteer at the Red Cross Centre in Chichester until he died on the April 3, 1982, at Donnington House.

It's crunch time for Chi as loss leaves the Blues facing the drop IT'S CRUNCH time for Chichester. After an up-and-down season, the Blues are teetering on the brink. THree losses in a row have left Rob Lawrence's side in danger of the drop. And with bottom side Amersham and Chiltern visiting Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm), the Blues know that anything other than a bonus point win could make their position even more perilous. THe trouble has been brewing for a little while now. An upturn in form around Christmas time saw Chi pull themselves away from the bottom of National League THree London and South East division. But a series of defeats, the latest a 33-5 reverse on the road at Westcliff last weekend, means the Blues need to rediscover that winning feeling - and fast. Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "For the second time in three weeks Chichester took the long road to Essex and were defeated. "THis time it was by the most improved team in the league, Westcliff, having won their previous six home games and riding high in mid-table.
"THey had extra muscle in their scrum and played with the control and cohesion which Blues lacked. "Although two late converted tries made the scoreline a bit flattering, they were certainly the better side. "Chichester played some decent rugby in fits and starts but following their triumphs against Dorking, Hertford and Sutton, they seem to have lost their self-confidence. "THey have to be fully motivated and determined as they are hovering over the relegation trap door with Southend two points behind them and in form." After going behind early at Westcliff, Chi hit back straight away - winger Ben Robson crashing over to level the scores at 5-5. A tight 20 minutes followed but then after that the home side took charge. Two forward tries made it 19-5 at the break. Chi tried hard to make inroads in the lead in the second half but it was Westcliff who made their pressure count - scoring two more converted tries to ensure a bonus point win. THe loss leaves the Blues fourth bottom and in need of a victory tomorrow against a side that has already beaten them this season.

FIVE weeks ago the future for Aldwick Cricket Club looked bleak after an arsonist torched their clubhouse. Fridges, tables, chairs, benches, a fully working kitchen and thousands of pounds of cricketing equipment all went up in smoke as volunteers looked on in shock. But thanks to the generosity of locals, the club in Brooks Lane is rising like a phoenix from the flames. A crowdfunder has raised £8,000 in four weeks to buy equipment for the club's colts programme. And just last week manufacturers Dunamis Cricket visited a training session to donate another cricket bat to be used in the upcoming season by the youngsters. A spokesman for the club said: "From the outside, the rundown building was probably an eyesore. But inside it gave so many people so many memories. "Hundreds of local youngsters would have walked out of this pavilion over the years
donning the whites of Aldwick Cricket Club. "We will strive to be back, we have been inundated with support and offers of help and we are truly grateful to all of the local and more far reaching community for every message we have received. "We will be back, it may take time but we will be back and we need your help." THe fire broke out in the early hours of January 30 - the same week that the club was about to start winter training. A kids easter cricket camp was also planned. After dealing with the initial shock, those who play at the Felpham Oval began rebuilding their club. Bucket collections at football matches, cake sales and a widespread appeal online has seen people from all over the world pledge their support the community club. While the total raised is still below the £10,000 club target, it will give them enough to get things ready behind the scenes for the new season ahead.

PostSport WITH only three weeks of the season left, the Friday Night Benevolent Darts League divisional singles knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club - and a joint record of 75 players took part across the three divisions. Division 1 saw 30 players step up to the oche. THe early rounds saw a few tough matches, leaving Andy Stubbs (Hunston CC) facing former champion Rob Collins (POW 'Z') in the final. Collins won the bullseye to start the final, but both players hit good scores to keep it even. Stubbs left a finish after 21 darts, but Collins was already on his double and finished the leg with one dart. Both players began the second leg scoring well. Collins missed double 12 for an 84 finish, Stubbs left double 1, Collins missed again, and Stubbs took the leg to level it up. THe last leg saw a ton from Stubbs, but 125 and 140 from Collins. Stubbs eventually left himself a 170 out shot. But Collins was on double top, and hit it with the first dart, taking the leg in 19 darts for his second Division 1 Singles champion title. Division 2 saw 25 players take part and the final came down to Alex Norgett (Newtown Amity) and Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker 'A'). Robinson won the bullseye, but Norgett started with the better scores of 100 and 121, and then hit treble 20, single 20 and double 20 to take the first leg. THe second leg saw Robinson forge ahead with a 140 and two tons. With 36 left he took 3 darts to hit the double and take the leg in 18 darts. THe last leg saw Norgett start with 120 but slip with a few low scores. THis let Robinson once again take the lead but miss double top for the win. Robinson slipped again for a few throws, missing the doubles and leaving himself with double one. While this was happening Norgett was closing in, and eventually managed to hit single 1 and double 2 for the win, taking the Division 2 Singles champion title. Division 3 saw 20 players take part with former division 1 champion Richard Pennells (POW Galleon) facing Stuart Gray (POW Galleon). THe pair shared the opening legs taking it to a shoot out. Pennells started the last leg with 125 and then 100, but Gray wasn't far behind. Pennells missed the double with the last dart, giving Gray a chance. Gray had 76 left, he hit single 16, but missed the single 20 and hit double 5. THis left him with the bullseye, but he just missed and hit the 25. Pennells then stepped up and hit double five with the first dart, taking the win and the Division 3 Singles title. Surprise package Chi have a top three finish well in sights

CHI CITY are being urged to keep up their winning ways and secure a top three finish. THe Oaklands Park side have defied the odds this season and find themselves with an outside shot of winning the title. With just nine games to go, Chi are third in the SCFL Premier, five points off the top. Even though the club has not applied for promotion, Miles Rutherford is urging his side to kick on and finish as high as they can. Rutherford said: "We have said all along that we have over-achieved. "We are in a situation where we thought we would be a top ten side and have ended up a top three side. "From now to the end of the season we have to win every game we can." Chi continued their good form with a 3-1 away win at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday. Goals from Jamie Horncastle, Lorenzo Dolcetti and Omar Barry secured the victory and ensure the Lillywhites keep the pressure on league leaders Shoreham. Next up is a home match against AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm) with a trip to second-placed Haywards Heath Town the following week.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea maintains the future is bright for the Lions - and urged his side to keep up the fighting spirit to end the season on a high. THe Nyetimber Lane side have been inconsistent all year and suffered a blow last month when five players parted ways with the club in one week But, despite the departures, Pagham have rallied and blooded a number of promising youngsters from their youth set-up. With the club sitting fourth in the SCFL Premier and a cup final against Haywards Heath in May to look forward to, Shea has urged the revamped side to do the club proud over the coming months. Speaking to the Post, Shea said: "THe story from now to the end of the season is to pick up as many point as possible and keep up the performaces. "We want to finish as high as possible so we need to push on and finish the season off as well as we can. "THe cup final will not affect us. We will try to win as may points as we can but the main
thing is the spirit is there." Pagham showed their inconsistency in the past week, beating Loxwood at home 2-0 before losing out to relegation threatened Littlehampton on Tuesday evening. THe 3-2 defeat came despite the Lions being down to nine men for the last 20 minutes of the match. Next up is a trip to bottom side Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm). Shea said: "THe fighting spirit was there against Littlehampton but the performance wasn't. THe message from the manager [Mark Bennett] was that we didn't work hard enough. In fact, we worked harder when were down to nine men than with 11. "We will bounce back though." In terms of the move to youth, Shea said: "THe 21s are top of the league and and the 18s reached the county cup semi-final before losing to Whitehawk in the last minute. "THe last two or three years have been very good and we're moving that way."

SELSEY will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after being hit for four by league leaders Saltdean United. THe Blues were the form team in SCFL Division One after winning four games on the trot. But a quadruple for Tigers striker Andy McDowell condemned Steve Bailey's side to their first defeat in a month. Seventh-placed Selsey will be looking to get back on track tomorrow as they face another tricky away day at Bexhill United (3pm).

Predators will be hoping to follow up last weekend's 2-1 win over TD Shipley with a Centenary Cup game at Harting. All games kick off at 3pm. In the FA Women's Premier League Division One (South East), table-topping Chichester City will return to action on Sunday welcoming fifth-placed Larkhall Atheltic to Oaklands Park (2pm). THe Green and White Army are currently ten points clear although Plymouth in second have three games in hand.
Buoyant Bosham win as Sids sit third BOSHAM will have the SCFL Division Two trophy almost in their grasp if they can beat title rivals Jarvis Brook tomorrow. Andy Probee's side have been leading the way all season and currently sit eight points clear with six games left. A little bobble a month ago, which led to two cup exits in back-to-back weeks, had some at Walton Lane fearing the worst. But the Robins have returned to form, last week beating Alfold 4-1 at home, thanks to goals from Louis Bell, Bradley Miles, James Colinese and Marco Giambelardini Tomorrow the Robins face a trip to secondplace Jarvis Brook (3pm), a side that a month ago beat them 4-3 in the Division Two Challenge Cup. Probee's side know that if they can return
from Crowborough with all three points, then they will be one step closer to lifting the coveted title. One side that could still upset the party is local rivals Sidlesham. Daren Pearce's side are third, nine points behind the league leading Robins. But with a game in hand and a trip to Walton Lane to come, the Sids know that one slip up could let them sneak in as the season draws to a close. Pearce's side kept up the pressure last weekend with a 3-1 win away at Westfield, John Phillips (2) and THomas Kelly getting the goals. Tomorrow the Sids travel to the University of Sussex to play mid-table Montpelier Villa. Kick off is at 2pm.

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell has admitted he is over the moon that his super striker has opened his Rocks' account. Charlie Moone had gone three games without scoring since he joined the Nyewood Lane side from Southern League outfit Slough Town. THat was until he poked home the winner last week in the Rocks 1-0 win over Leatherhead. Howell is now hoping the prolific frontman can repeat history and fire Bognor to promotion from the Ryman Premier, just like Moone did for Hampton and Richmond. THe number nine will not have long to wait with the table-topping Rocks facing two tough trips in the next week, starting tomorrow at promotion challenging Leiston (3pm). Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "I'm delighted that Charlie got his first goal for us. Strikers want to score goals and it will give him a great confidence lift moving forward. "I thought he took the goal very well and I'm just pleased as he has played well since he came in and that will do him some good. "It's the way things go for strikers. Maybe the service has been lacking, perhaps it's because we have had a few difficult games and chances have been at a premium - I think there are a number of reasons for that but all I can ask is for us to get the service right and then the goals will come." Last week's 1-0 win means Bognor are
undefeated in six in the league. However, the performances in that time have been far from convincing. With bigspending Havant now only one point behind with one game in hand, Howell is looking for a response in Suffolk tomorrow and then at Burgess Hill Town on Tuesday (7.30pm). Sixth-placed Leiston will no doubt offer the sterner challenge of the two. THe home side will be buoyed after beating fellow playoff challengers Tonbridge Angels 2-0 in midweek. Howell said: "We have two tough away games to come in the week but we have a good squad and I'm confident we have enough to do well." He added: "I think the performance does matter. I would like to win three or four nil every week, I think every manager in the country would like that. "Sometimes there are specific reasons for us not performing as well as we can but I can't fault the players' attitude and work rate. "We just have to keep working hard, keep getting the crosses in and keep having shots. "THe most important thing is winning the games we have." And as for the threat of Havant? Howell said: "Havant are there but they are expected to win the league. If they win every game they have left then they will do that. "My job is to keep sure that we win as many games as we can."

IF IT ain't broke, don't fix it. THere's a lot of truth in the old adage, not least when it comes to Bognor Regis Town Football Club. In recent years manager Jami Howell and his assistant Darin Killpatrick have developed a winning formula at Nyewood Lane. With the club now close to securing another promotion, this time from the Ryman Premier, it would take a big betting man to place odds on the pair changing things on the playing front. But, a string of unconvincing performances combined with the absence of Sami El-Abd (suspension, two games) and Dylan Barnett (leg injury), means that Howell and Co may shake things up. THe pair had a perfect opportunity to try things out this week, when a British Army XI was beaten 2-1 at Nyewood on Tuesday night. Howell said: "It was a good worthwhile run out. I looked at a few things I wanted to work on and it also possibly gave me a few ideas. "We had a few people playing in certain roles. THere may be a change if I think it is necessary. "But since I have been at the club things haven't changed too much in those years so we shall see."
WELL WHAT a fortnight it has been - and after a couple of tough matches the Rocks are still top of the table but with Havant in close pursuit. A lot of Rocks supporters made the trip to Needham Market for our last game in February. It was first versus third in a game all the fans were looking forward to. We don’t mind spending nearly four hours in the coach and travelling all the way to East Anglia to see a performance. And the Rocks didn’t disappoint in an open, endto-end first half display against the Marketmen. As we got there at 1.20pm sharp (thanks to Chris the coach driver), we noticed how poor the state of the pitch was. Cows wouldn’t look out of place on that surface and the weather deteriorated as the game went on. Oh the joys! But, surprisingly, the game was free-flowing and players like Doug Tuck and Gary Charman enjoyed much of the play. It was Charman’s header from James Crane’s cross that got us going on 22 minutes. But the home side cancelled us out on 35 minutes in a similar move down the other end. Two minutes later, though, Sami El-Abd was in the box to grab a scrappy goal and put us back in the lead. We thought we might have been OK to see out the half until the break but we were wrong. Kem Izzet’s fine strike on 44 minutes had Dan Lincoln well beaten. As has been the case for most of the season, the second half worked out to be the complete opposite in comparison. Hardly much happened, though Needham were rather wasteful in front of goal right at the end. Still, a point kept us top but our advantage was sadly reduced. Our next game saw Jimmy Bullard’s Leatherhead visit
Nyewood Lane. What made me laugh was how the Tanners gaffer was trying to shoot into an empty net before the warm ups even started. He missed on every single attempt. As I watched, a colleague of his was videoing him and I even heard Jimmy say “Don’t put that on Twitter!” after scuffing a shot well wide. It’s a shame really for a guy who was one of the best English players around in his prime but due to injuries his playing career was cut short. His team were hit with a fine Charlie Moone goal 42 minutes into the match. I am so pleased that he has got off the mark. I think part of the reason he hasn’t scored already is that he must be under pressure, plus the fact we have played only away on what were very difficult pitches (Wingate & Finchley’s excluded). Again, like Needham, Leatherhead proved rather wasteful in front of goal whereas it was another dull second half really from Bognor. But as the final whistle went it was a relief that we gained the three points. Fair play to Jimmy who ignored all of the banter behind him in the dugout. Either that or he wasn’t listening! THis week sees us travel back out to Suffolk to take on sixth-placed Leiston. I know they have had troubles with their pitch, too. Hence why they are so behind on matches. Bognor know this all too well of course from last season, for different reasons. We went far in the FA Trophy, whereas their pitch lets them down. Let’s hope that the game is on and the players perform in what will be yet another difficult fixture. I hope to see you on the coach tomorrow that leaves at 9.30am. THe Green Army are due a strong performance. UP THE ROCKS!
