Flaming disaster New space mission for Major Tim School destroyed by raging inferno

THe fire, said to be started accidentally by a roofer, destroyed the school despite the efforts of more than 100 firefighters from Chichester, Selsey and Bognor Regis on Sunday morning.

CHICHESTER astronaut Tim Peake has gone from space to getting his own space in the shape of an exhibition in his honour.

THe Novium Museum has announced will stage the exhibition in the city following the spaceman’s out-of-this-world adventures.

Major Peake is said to have backed the exhibition which is expected to open in December.

Nigel Peake, Tim’s dad, pictured, is acting as an advisor to the project and said: "I'm delighted that this project will help to continue Tim's mission message about the importance of science and space, especially to young people."

Chichester District councillor Gillian Keegan said: "We are so proud of what Tim Peake has achieved. We want this exhibition to not only recognise his journey into space, but also inspire young people to follow their dreams."

THe project will also feature career opportunities in space to inspire youngsters.

Post Office WILL move to North Street

CHICHESTER councillor Nigel Galloway has spoken of his disappointment after the Post Office announced that it is to go ahead and move its branch in Chichester after all.

Despite protestations and anger from the campaigners, the Post Office will be relocated to British Bookshops Sussex Stationers, which is owned by WHSmith, in North Street from its current spot in West Street.

Mr Galloway, District and City Councillor for Chichester South said: “I’m really disappointed that the Post Office has ignored local representations particularly those made by the Chichester City Council, which was strongly opposed to moving the Post Office. “We unanimously objected and

had concerns about whether the shop was suitable for a Post Office, and we wanted to see the main Post Office in West Street maintained.”

A Post Office spokesman said: “Our customers’ needs continue to change and we are responding to that, taking the right action to sustain our services for years to come.

“We are committed to remaining on high streets and at the heart of communities and we are making changes right across our network to enable us to do so.

“We believe the WHSmith premises will provide an excellent host location for the new Post Office.

Birds and the bees BIRDS, butterflies and bees are welcome in gardens with new research revealing that people in Chichester are big fans of wildlife visitors.

THe survey by housebuilder Barratt Homes, which has a number of developments in West Sussex, reveals that more than 80 per cent of people like to be able to see birds in their gardens.

Butterflies are almost as popular with 71 per cent of those questioned ticking this box and bees third with 60 per cent saying they are welcome in their gardens.

And those in the region don’t just expect wildlife to visit – they actively encourage visitors with more than 59 per cent saying they put food out

for birds and more than 55 per cent planting bee-friendly flowers and trees in their gardens.

“It’s great to see how many people really embrace wildlife visitors to their gardens and actively encourage wildlife which is something we support,’’ said Barratt Homes sales director Michelle Storer.

Barratt Homes has a partnership with the RSPB to create wildlifefriendly housing developments and give nature a new home.

“We’re working with the RSPB to raise employee awareness of wildlife-friendly best practice across our developments in the south and throughout our supply chain nationally,’’ added Michelle.

Blaze's 'accidently started' by worker

by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk GUSTS of up to 25mph fanned the flames that gutted Selsey Academy in the blaze which fire chiefs say was accidentally caused by a workman.

Investigators probing the skeleton of the school after the huge fire reckon it was most likely caused by an unsuspecting worker carrying out maintenance on the school roof.

It is claimed that it was a roofer who first called the emergency services when the fire broke out.

But the strong winds meant that by the time the first 999 crews arrived it was apparent that saving the building was going to be impossible and that containment was the only course of

action. A West Sussex Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "At this stage we believe the most likely cause of the fire was accidental ignition caused by a workman carrying out maintenance on the roof. THere is no evidence to support online speculation that this was arson.”

And fire chiefs were quick to dismiss suggestions on a national newspaper’s website that the blaze was the work of arsonists, possibly children who attended the school. THe claims were labelled "complete tosh".

Despite the sterling efforts of firefighters large parts of the school suffered extensive structural damage and much of its contents were destroyed. *Selsey Library reopened on Monday after the fire at the nearby school after an inspection.

..said: "THere was little that could be done to stop it spreading so quickly and it is a sad sight to see such a local asset so badly damaged.

"We were able to prevent it spreading to all parts of the school, however, and I'm particularly pleased there were no injuries reported.

"I'm also glad we were able to protect the neighbouring properties including the thatched houses that are part of Selsey's appeal.

“It has been a great shock to the local community and all those people directly involved with the school, but they were tremendous in their support.

"What we hope for now is for the school to recover and the disruption to be kept to a minimum as it is being rebuilt.”

THe first of more than 60 999 calls made to the Sussex Control Centre was from a roofer said to be carrying out maintenance work to say a partition on the roof was alight at 7.54am.

THe academy, which educates 453 pupils, is a mixed school for those aged 11 to 16. It was opened by the Duke of Norfolk in 1963 as Manhood Secondary Modern School. It then re-opened in 2011 as part of the Kemnal Academies Trust.

Last year, 47 per cent of GCSE students gained five or more A* to C passes including English and Maths.

It comes after the school was rated inadequate in an Ofsted inspection in 2013 and just over a year layer an inspection upgraded it to "requires improvement" Current head teacher, Tom Garfield took up, his post in 2016.

by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk SELSEY Academy headteacher Tom Garfield has paid tribute to firefighters and the community spirit in the wake of the ferocious blaze that destroyed the school.

Mr Garfield, who took up his post in January, said: “We’d like to thank the local community, emergency services and parents, students and staff of Selsey Academy for their ongoing support following the devastating fire at the academy “We understand that this is a very unsettling time for all of those involved and are grateful for the help we’ve received.

“Our primary focus is to minimise the disruption for students starting the autumn term.

"We are working closely with local authorities to put contingency plans into place as quickly as possible. We will update all parents and pupils as soon as we can.”

Following the fire, students were able collect GCSE results from the Seal Primary yesterday.

THe community spirit of which Mr Garfield speaks was evident very quickly once the flames had taken hold.

Selsey scouts hastily put in place plans

to assist 999 crews battling the blaze first thing Sunday morning.

A spokesman said: "After speaking to emergency services around 8.30am and learning about the extent of the fire at the school we offered them the use of our facilities and headquarters.

"As soon as we had permission to open the headquarters up, a team of leaders, committee members, parents and volunteers provided the emergency services with refreshments.

"THese included teas, coffees, biscuits cakes, and refreshments as well as cooking them some burgers and hot dogs as well.

"We set up the hall which became their incident room and meeting place.

We would like to thank on behalf of the emergency services everyone that came down with sandwiches and refreshments for them it showed them what Selsey truly is all about, so thank you."

THe Scout HQ was open over night for the crews and the building has also offered the school the use of the facilities as class rooms.

"Our thoughts are with everyone involved with the school at this horrible time.

"Well done to all our hard-working emergency services yesterday, you are incredible and did all you could well done everyone," added a spokesman.

RESIDENTS in the area surrounding the school were advised to keep all windows and doors shut due to the presence of acrid black smoke and ash coming from the building.

THe smoke could be seen from as far away as Bognor Regis and Worthing beaches.

Many streets in the area were closed as officers fought the fire and remained so for most of the afternoon.

Eyewitness Dan Barratt, 54, a fitness trainer from Bognor Regis, saw the plumes of smoke during a vist to the beach.

He said: "THe smoke was thick, black and billowing and it was cxlear from the off that something was desperately amiss.

"You have to say a big 'well done' for all those who helped fight the blaze because this could have been much, much worse."

'We're proud and really grateful to an amazing community' SELSEY Fire Station chief Paul Smith took to Facebook to praise what he described as the "amazing" people who rallied around following the fire that destroyed the school.

He posted: "My name is Paul Smith and I am the officer in charge of Selsey Fire Station.

"After the devastating fire which took place today at The Academy, I would just like to say on behalf of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service how extremely proud and grateful we are to the amazing Selsey

THE Diocese of Chichester has offered thoughts and prayers in the aftermath of the blaze that gutted the Selsey Academy.

Church of England's Horsham Bishop Mark Sowerby says he hopes there will be further support going forward.

He said: “The fire comes as a devastating shock shortly before examination results were released this week.

"Our thoughts and prayers must

be with the new headteacher, his colleagues and indeed the whole school community as they come to terms with exactly what has happened.

"I know that the Selsey community rallied in support of the many firefighters who brought the blaze under control.

"And I trust that the same support shown will be there for the academy in the challenging times that lay ahead.”

SELSEY resident Katrina Hamer has set up a JustGiving account to raise money to help following the fire at the school. THe fundraising efforts aim to raise at least £1,000 to aid the academy.

She said: “At the moment we don't know what will happen but the library, art and food tech is completely lost. Any donations towards helping to improve the facilities are much needed.

“THe total is heading upwards and I'm pretty sure that we can smash it.

Hopefully the fact that people are trying to do something by donating money will show the kids and the staff just how much we all care.”

Sandra Taylor’s son went to the school and she donated and said: “THis is my son's school and he has loved being part of this great school.

"THe teachers really care about the pupils rather than just their grades."

THIS is a futuristic vision of what Selsey’s new academy could look like when it rises from the ashes of the blaze that destroyed it.

School chiefs must decide what course of action to take in the long term to replace the destroyed building, which was gutted in the fire on Sunday.

And one option could be to replicate this modern facility built a few years ago in Monkseaton, in Tyneside, at a cost of £20million.

THe idea was put forward by a contributor in a Selsey discussion group on Facebook. THe poster wrote: "THere’s only one other school in the UK that looks like this at Monkseaton at a cost of 20.3 million which takes 480 students "I say emergency government funds of £35million should be made available to cover the cost of the new school and temporary education and transport for

the students then to be paid back by the insurance cover on the old school and national tax payers.

"Around 450 students don't have a school to go to so let's not sit around.

Selsey needs a new high school.

"THe good thing about Selsey Academy it has the big playing field at the back perfect to build a new school on.

'Once built the old school's ground could be turned over to the new playing field. THe only other place to build a school in Selsey would be where the new ASDA is due to be built."

Meanwhile, headteacher Tom Garfield said plans to look after the short-term needs of pupils are advancing. He said: "By working closely with TKAT, the Department of Education and local authorities we have made significant progress in the contingency plans for education at the academy students in September We would like to reassure parents, pupils and all involved that we are working to provide you all with the most comprehensive update possible."

Cake cash for school SELSEY resident Lyn Edwards and her family staged a cake sale to raise funds for the Selsey Academy following the fire that razed it to the ground.

Lyn held the sale in the garden of her home in Lingfield Way, and said: “The girls have been baking to raise money for their school if you would like to buy a cake please feel free — he shortbread is amazing too.

“Thank you too all those that have donated for the school by buying

cakes, what is left the girls will be taking up to the emergency services still at the school.”

Meanwhile, Jane McQueen, who donated to a JustGiving fundraiser, said: “This wasn't just a school.

There was a dedication by staff, and closeness between everyone that went there, or goes there, that is second to none.

"My donation is just a small 'thank you' for all of your hard work that has been put in.”

M&S store set to open HIGH Street giant Marks & Spencer will unveil a new foodhall in Chichester next month.

THe company says they will supply 4,000 food and drink products and also have a cafe for customers.

New store manager Paul Gregory, who has been with M&S for 28 years, said: "THe countdown until we open our doors is really on and we can't wait to share our new foodhall with shoppers.

“To welcome the new season the store will be stocked with autumnal treats including favourites from our gastropub meals and speciality taste ranges."

THe store is at Unit 3A, Portfield Retail Park, Portfield Way and will be open from 8am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday.

THIEVES have struck again at a car park used by visitors to Kingley Vale national Nature Reserve, near Chichester. Poilce report that there were four separate reports of theft from vehicles on August 22 at West Stoke Car Park between 7:30am9:30pm. STARS from musical Half A Sixpence took time out from the critically acclaimed show at Chichester Festival THeatre to perform at the city’s newest care home.

Charlie Stemp, central character Arthur Kipps, was joined by fellow actors Emma Williams and Devon-Elise Johnson to entertain residents at Wellington Grange.

“We were thrilled to have them here,” said Halcyon McLaren, 95. “It was like they were on stage. As many of us are wobbly on our feet we'll settle for giving them a standing ovation with our hearts.”

THe exclusive performance was arranged under a partnership between CFT and family-owned Colten Care who

run Wellington Grange less than a mile from the theatre.

THe aim of the partnership is to bring interactive theatre experiences directly into the home while offering residents, families and friends priority access to events and tickets at CFT. Wellington Grange’s Emily Hudson said: “THeatre has been a big part of many residents’ lives.

"THe visit meant residents unable to physically go the theatre could enjoy a version with the cast.”

KIND-HEARTED Maisie Skinner had her first hair cut to help her disabled friend a day after she came out of hospital.

Maise, five, shrugged off a five-day stay in St Richard's Hospital to have 30cms cut from her light brown locks.

She hopes the resulting bob will raise £500 for the Dream to Dance appeal for Erin Aldridge, five. Erin's parents are fundraising for £40,000 to enable their daughter to walk for the first time.

Maisie's mum, Becky Skinner, of West Wittering, said: "She came out of St Richards's but still wanted to go ahead with this." Maisie has TRAPS, or periodic fever syndrome, with really high temperatures, stomach aches and pains.

"It is to do with her genes and very rare.

Only one in a million are diagnosed.

Maisie went to hospital for the first time with it as her temperature was 40degC.

and aftercare. Ash said: "We are grateful for Maisie's help. We've had a couple of big donations recently. Southway School raised £2,500 for Erin and three dance groups also raised £400-500.

"THis all brings us closer to the £26,000 we need to pay for the operation. We expect to reach that at the end of this year. THen we can give the surgeons the go ahead. It's a case of first come, first served and there will be no waiting list."

THe surgeons will need three months to carry out all the pre-operation tests to determine the operation Erin will need to release her muscles. Once spasticity has relaxed Erin will be able to walk. But she will require another operation to complement the improvements.

THe procedures will need to be followed by extensive physiotherapy to build up Erin's leg muscies because she has been confined to a wheelchair.

RMT rail strikes to hit train travellers CHICHESTER commuters and rail passengers face more disruption to their journeys.

Workers on Southern trains are to stage a 48-hour strike on 7 and 8 September in the continuing dispute over the role of guards, the RMT union has said.

THe union is fighting plans by Southern owner Govia THameslink (GTR) to turn conductors into onboard supervisors. Drivers would take over responsibility for opening and closing carriage doors.

Services have been disrupted for months due to industrial action and Southern says the action is "unnecessary, unjustified and futile”.

THe RMT has held a series of one-day strikes since April after balloting 393 members.

Earlier this month, thousands of Southern passengers faced disruption during a five-day strike, which was then suspended after three days to allow fresh talks.

Nearly 1,000 services across the network, which operates from Sussex and Surrey to London, Kent, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire, were cancelled on each of the strike days.

Maisie and Erin are both pupils at Southway Primary School in Bognor Regis. Maisie's time in the salon chair will take the Erin's Dream to Dance appeal just under £20,000.

Her mum and dad, Ash and Victoria Aldridge, launched the appeal about six months ago after a promised NHS operation to correct Erin's quadriplegic cerebral palsy was withdrawn because of a lack of funding. THis left them having to find £40,000 to pay for the selective dorsal rhizotomy procedure

Paws for a walk will raise cash for charity HEARING Dogs for Deaf People has organised the second “Paws for a Walk” at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum.

THe walk takes place on September 18 and follows the success of a similar event in 2014.

THe walk trail, over 2.5k or 5k, follows the museum’s own accessible pathways for the most part, giving each walker the opportunity to discover traditional rural buildings and the stories of the families who lived and worked in them over a 950-year period.

THe entry ticket, which costs £10 for adults and £5 for under 16 with children under five free, gives the walker access to the museum for the whole day, giving them the chance to fully explore the 40-acre parkland setting within the South Downs National Park.

THe 2.5km route, especially designed for the event is accessible to off-road style wheel chairs and buggies. Please ask for advice and an alternative route is planned.

A spokesman said: “For the more energetic, we recommend the 5km walk, which is two laps. Dogs must be on leads for the event.”

Romans' city parade's full of pageantry and fanfare!

THe colourful pageantry unfolded along North Street as part of the keenly anticipated Romans in Residence project leading to a carnival heading to the Market Cross and along to the Novium Museum.

It was all part of the museum teaming up with artists in

residence from Splodge Designs to design fun outfitsf or the parade, which was funded by a £10,000 grant from Arts Council England.

THe costumes and textile pieces with accompanying soundscapes were created in workshops ahead of the carnival, which aimed to explore the connection between Chichester residents and their Roman heritage in conjunction with the opening of a new Roman gallery this month.

Chichester District Council's Gillian Keegansaid at the time: "THis is another success for THe Novium Museum. THe project aims to give residents ownership of their Roman heritage by involving them in a legacy within their local museum."

On Sunday, THe Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Portsmouth Region held its annual club event at the show.

And another popular attraction at the event was the gallopers ride, powered by a Fowler Showman’s steam engine, which was at the centre of a small traditional vintage fairground.

PATRICIA Kemp, who was wife of former Bishop of Chichester Eric Kemp has died.

A Diocese of Chichester website statement said: “Bishop Martin has asked that parishes remember Pat and her family in their prayers.

“Bishop Eric and Pat were married in 1953. She was the daughter of Kenneth Kirk, renowned moral theologian and bishop of Oxford.

THe couple had five children.

“During Bishop Eric’s time as Bishop, Pat supported him in many ways and was often to be seen in the background quietly listening and talking to people in communities right across the Diocese.”

Post POPULAR husband and wife team Julie and Colin Lankester have left Chichester secondary school Bishop Luffa School after 72 years’ combined service. They are now starting new careers following their departures, with Colin heading off to work as an Ofsted inspector and Julie set to start running an events design start-up business.

Hospice Chief Executive, Alison Moorey, said, “THis report is a testament to all the hard work and dedication that all of the staff and volunteers put in. THese results highlight the high levels we pride ourselves on and will continue to set”.

A celebration lunch was held for the staff at the hospice to thank them for all their help towards the CQC rating.

STUDENTS at Chichester College are getting ready for their next steps after celebrating their A-level results.

Nearly half the students achieved A*-B grades and many are celebrating getting into the universities of their choice.

Becca Jones achieved two A grades in psychology and English language and a B grade in human biology and is going to Cardiff University study physiotherapy.

She said: “I’m relieved! THe exams were tough and so I didn’t think I was going to get these results. I’m really happy.”

Juliet Taylor was just as excited, after receiving an A* in creative writing and two B grades in English literature and Biology. She is going to University of Sussex to study international relations.

She added: “I’m surprised and excited!

When I opened my results, I thought it was A at first so it’s better than I thought.

I’m looking forward to starting university – it’s exciting and a little scary!” Briony

Laker has decided to continue her education at Chichester College, after receiving A* and A grades in creative writing and drama and theatre studies.

She said: “I’m thrilled with my results and I’m looking forward to another year.”

Alongside the A-level students, the college’s AS Level students also collected their results after their first year.

Oliver Martello got A grades in maths and further maths and a B in physics.

He said: “It’s amazing, I can’t believe it! I want to study maths at university and I'm looking at Imperial, Warwick and Bath.”

Melissa Taylor and Shannon McCarthy were also delighted by their set of results, which included three B grades for Melissa in film, media and geography and an A, B and D grade for Shannon in photography, film and drama.

Melissa said: “I’m relieved. I quite was nervous but I’m happy with my results and looking forward to my second year.”

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an attempted burglary at a flat in Longley Road, Chichester.

THe attempted raid happened overnight between 10.30pm on August 9 and 8.30am the next morning.

THe suspects entered the block containing flats 20 to 32, and tried to force the front door of one of the flats, but a security chain prevented them getting in.

Chichester College students all smiles after exam results

St Wilfrid's is highly praised HEALTH regulators have praised St Wilfrids Hospice for treating their patients with “dignity, compassion and respect”.

And the hospice has been given an overall rating of “good”, meaning they are performing well and meeting CQC expectations.

THe Hospice, which was founded in 1987, cares for around 240 patients at any one time, a large majority of whom are cared for in the community.

THe Care Quality Commission (CQC) ask five questions about care services; Are they safe? Are they effective? Are they caring?

Girls saved from mud TWO young girls were rescued after becoming stuck in the mud on West Wittering beach.

Selsey Coastguard's Mud Rescue Team made their way to the stranded youngsters last THursday evening and were able to extract thm from the mud and they were winched to safety.

After making sure they were warm and unharmed, both girls were reunited with their families. Both lifeboats from RNLI Hayling Island Lifeboat Station and Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team were paged and on route. *If you get stuck in mud stay calm and try not to move, sit down if possible and spread your weight and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

HEARTBROKEN mum Kelly Rose has issued an emotional plea for the safe return of her family’s beloved pup Tobias.

THe 10-month old Chihuahua “vanished off the face of the earth” earlier this month says Kelly, who is desperate for his return.

And she has revealed her children, Hollie, 9, and Bruno, 7, who has special needs, are also agonising over the micro-chipped dog’s disappearance from the family home in Adelaide Road, Chichester.

Police won’t investigate the mystery as they don’t consider Tobias, who joined the family aged 11 weeks, stolen — there were no signs of a break-in at the home, says Kelly.

Now she has offered a £1,000 reward for the “no questions asked” return of the pup, for whom she has set up appeals on social media, including a Facebook page, Finding Tobias.

Kelly said: “He must have somehow got out the house if he wasn't taken. We've been in touch with the authorities and have heard nothing. But people have been very kind and the search goes on.

"As a parent you want to protect your children from heartache as best you can and when you can't you feel powerless.

"Hollie wanted a puppy and she couldn't have asked for a more loving, playful pickle as she got with Tobias, he

had us hooked the moment we met him.

We were talking about getting a playmate for him only a few weeks ago, again Hollie was very excited.

“We were worried about Bru and how unintentionally rough he can be, we always thought that with his lack of understanding that a more robust dog would be better for him, however over the weeks Tobias let him know when he had pushed the boundaries and a beautiful friendship blossomed .

"I would see Bruno and Tobias sharing a kiss and then play fight and then play with toys — a wonderful understanding between a boy with special needs and a tiny dog and I knew they had a friendship for life and now there's nothing.

“How have my children deserved to experience so much heartache at such a young age and how can I help to heal their hearts when mine is in pieces?

"I feel at an utter loss, I have moved Tobias's bed from the living room as I can not bear to see it empty. His lead hangs on the hook in the kitchen and his toys are where he left them. I'll continue to search for him and hope wherever he is he is being loved and cared for.

"My stomach is in knots wondering what has happened to him and I have nothing but hatred for the spiteful people who have him because I don't believe for a second that Tobias has passed away." *If you spot Tobias or have any information to help find him, call Kelly on 07584928062.

Head back to school in Arundel with the classic British play History Boys Arundel Festival August 27 — Priory Playhouse.

HEADING back to school comes early with this British classic. THe History Boys was acclaimed both on stage and in film and is sure to be a successful and memorable festival production.

Set in the early 1980s, the play follows a group of history pupils preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge entrance examinations under the guidance of three teachers with hugely contrasting styles.

And Arundel Players' production of this genuine British classic is set to change the history books, directed by Dawn Smithers and playing at THe Priory Playhouse THeatre.

In addition to the eight sixth formers who set our story, the cast includes Hector, the eccentric, veteran teacher

played by Stuart Smithers who believes that exam preparation is the enemy of education.

He wants the boys to learn information and skills that will benefit their development as men. Roger Booth plays the headmaster, Felix Armstrong, who is thrilled that the boys have achieved such excellent A-level scores.

He brings in Irwin to give them some polish as he believes education alone is not enough to gain entrance into Oxford or Cambridge.

Irwin, played by Tony Bright, is a young, savvy “supply teacher” who wants the boys to focus on making themselves as appealing as possible to the Oxbridge examiners.

Mrs. Lintott, played by Rosey Purchase, is the history teacher who has quietly and steadily been teaching the boys everything they need to know to excel

“Alan Bennett is always very popular and this is one of Alan Bennett’s most celebrated plays and much of the narrative was inspired by his own experiences in school and gaining a place at Oxford.” said Dawn.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, THe History Boys first opened in London in 2004 and went on to win a host of awards. Its Broadway debut came back in April 2006.

THe film version, which was also directed by Nicholas Hytner, was one of the Top Ten Films of 2006. It is truly a triumph of British performance.

Gaunt is so steely as Strife mines a conflict of classes

THE venerable William Gaunt doesn’t have that much to say in Strife, John Galsworthy’s gritty play revived at Chichester’s Minerva THeatre.

THat said, he speaks volumes in the lines he does have as ageing, hard-nosed tin mining company chairman John Anthony, faced with rebellious Welsh strikers trying to force his hand over pay and a disgruntled board of directors taking care of business for shareholders at the turn of the century.

Whisky-swilling, cigar-smoking Anthony is up against, amongst others, Valleys fireball David Roberts (Ian Hughes), who is so immersed in impassioned vitriol on behalf of the strikers, he fails to see quite how sick his own wife, championsof the families’ plight, has become from the strains of grim life on the breadline.

It’s not an easy watch, but I don’t suppose it is meant to be. THat doesn’t mean it should be missed, however.

at home along with their staff who proved equally as pleasant and welcoming. We headed out to the terrace seating overlooking the gorgeous sea view with our attentive and welcoming waiter by our side.

We ordered up some soft drinks (a little early for a wine tasting) and sat eyeing through the menu.

THe range of foods was vast and my mouth watered just at the sights of the lunch set up.

Baguettes and sandwiches flowed through the menu with a variety of fillings from fish, such as prawn and tuna to gorgeous range of meats and cheeses all served with a garnished salad and options to add fries.

Other foods on the menu included strong British favourites, fish and chips, rump steaks, burgers with fresh local meats and a fabulous range of Italian dishes and a separate pizza menu ready to temp your taste buds.

After browsing the menu, we chose our

courses and accompanied by our waiter we set off to order. We decided on something simple for starters, prawn cocktail for me and my companion enjoyed some garlic bread.

It was simply the best prawn cocktail I have tasted, with juicy and fresh salad accompanying a succulent fish dish that really took me by surprise.

THe garlic bread was light but packed with a gorgeous Italian flavour and provided us with a subtle yet scrumptious starter option.

THe choices were hard to make for our main given the extent of the menu but we chose to go with the specials of the day. I was served a spectacular teriyaki salmon, served on a bed of seasoned noodles and vegetables.

THe noodles were cooked perfectly al dente and the peppers, onions and baby sweetcorns that mixed within were seasoned gorgeously and added a light and fresh zing to the dish.

THe salmon was beautifully cooked and fell away with ease when we tucked in and melted morishly into the mouth. My companion was dished up a Cajun chicken pasta.

THe chicken was tender and seasoned with a punchy Cajun spice accompanied with a thick tagliatelle pasta and shells of red onion that succulently complimented the dish amazingly all engorged in the most delectable creamy sauce.

Myself and my dining partner were amazed by the portion sizes, each dish seemed like a sharer and the chefs were not shy to pile up the plates with their exquisite food, proving you really do get more than you pay for at this delightful venue. Our lovely waiter attended to

us again to clear away our polished-off plates and took our final order of the afternoon, desert.

After our huge main courses we went ahead and ordered a desert to share with the choice of a rich chocolate pudding, a sticky toffee sponge and more all served with either a light vanilla ice cream or a rich custard acquaintance.

We set our sights on the sticky toffee option and when it arrived in front of us, first impressions couldn’t have been better.

THe presentation was something of a SoHo eatery and the dish was finished with a light cinnamon crunch dusted over the ice cream.

As we tucked in I was blown away with the flamboyant flavour.

THe sponged proved light and airy, nothing that would stick in your stomach all day and the sauce and ice cream proved to be perfect accomplices.

After a fantastic meal and afternoon I left the restaurant full and caressed with food love. A distinctive and sociable atmosphere with some of the best staff I have seen in a restaurant you can be sure to come away from THe Aviator with an eating experience like no other.

With such an amazing menu, food with impeccable presentation on offer, and also specials night including curry and steak evening with a range of offers, it is a night out not to be missed.

Sparkling options when it comes to lovely bubbly Martin Lury

Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys TO champ or to sparkle? THat is the main consideration this week as I recommend suitable Bank Holiday beverages. Let us celebrate the end of August in style having due regard to value for money and note the improving quality of sparkling wine some of which is home grown.

To that end I tasted two English sparkling wines and one from New Zealand. Limited production tends to keep prices high for English wines, so I was pleased to avail myself of 25 per cent off six bottles of wine at Sainsbury's in order to purchase a Chapel Down Vintage Reserve Brut at the reduced price of £12 75.

Grapes are sourced from Kent, Essex and good old Sussex for this crisp sparkling wine with lively acidity and fine persistent bubbles. At this price it is a no-brainer and should not disappoint with its fresh citrus flavours, hints of strawberry and brioche on the finish.

In my quest to evaluate English sparkling wines I headed due north to leafy Boxhill to Denbies wine estate. I selected their original sparkling wine, namely Denbies Greenfields, an elegant fizz made from

whole bunch hand-picked grapes. Its baked apple aromas are enhanced by a toasted character and it is rounded in the mouth with generous fruit and purity of flavour. THe only downside with this good wine is the price of £25 which is not over competitive compared to budget champagnes.

My last sparkling wine from NZ proved to be another bargain basement buy from Morrison's reduced from £20 to £10! THe Cloudy Bay Pelorus not only looks good, tastes even better and is, in my view, the

Rolls-Royce of champagne alternatives.

THis is an aperitif style of sparkling wine with lemon, hazelnut and brioche flavours to the fore and a delight to sample.

Turning now to Champagne, it is worth bearing in mind that over 70 countries, including Australia and China, have signed up to an agreement that Champagne can only be used on labels for products of the Champagne region of France and hence its exclusivity.

cent reduction in price on any six bottles purchased. Supermarkets' own labels can put some people off, but I have to say that Sainsbury's Champagne Blanc de Noirs at a post reduction £12 was a pleasant surprise with its balanced acidity, hint of toasted biscuit and richness and is my wine of the week and one you can present without fear of offending any guest!

Popping into M&S I spotted an Oudinot brut down to £12, whose creamy texture made it a good buy at that price. I then scaled the heights and purchased an Abdel

BEEF STEW WITH DUMPLINGS INGREDIENTS For the beef stew • 2 tbsp olive oil • 750g/1lb 10oz beef stewing steak, chopped into bite-sized pieces • 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 175g/6oz baby onions, peeled • 150g/5oz carrots, cut into large chunks • 2 leeks, roughly chopped • 200g/7oz swede, cut into large chunks • 150ml/5fl oz red wine • 500ml/18fl oz beef stock • 2 fresh bay leaves • 3 tbsp fresh thyme leaves • 3 tbsp chopped fresh flatleaf parsley • Worcestershire sauce, to taste • salt and freshly ground black pepper For the dumplings • 125g/4½oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 1 tsp baking powder • pinch salt • 60g/2½oz suet • water, to make a dough

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

2. For the beef stew, heat the oil in an ovenproof casserole and fry the beef until browned on all sides.

3. Sprinkle over the flour and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.

4. Add the garlic and all the vegetables and fry for 1-2 minutes.

5. Stir in the wine, stock and herbs, then add the Worcestershire sauce, to taste. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

6. Cover with a lid, transfer to the oven and cook for about two hours, or until the meat is tender.

7. For the dumplings, sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.

8. Add the suet and enough water to form a thick dough.

9. With floured hands, roll spoonfuls of the dough into small balls.

10. After two hours, remove the lid from the stew and place the balls on top of the stew. Cover, return to the oven and cook for a further 20 minutes, or until the dumplings have swollen and are tender. (If you prefer your dumplings with a golden top, leave the lid off when returning to the oven.)

The charity's reputation for promoting and presenting freely accessible quality events on a not-for-profit basis has ensured its survival through enforced changes of venue before it settled in the grounds of the Royal Norfolk Hotel and the promenade opposite.

A mixture of determination and expertise has ensured every festival has combined experienced and newer musicians in a wide range of genres who relish taking to a fully equipped stage in front of thousands of spectators.

Awards, plaudits and congratulations have given formal recognition to the hard work of the volunteer trustee directors and their team of helpers.

They have also forged successful links to expand the range of Rox events.

A Hallowe'en festival provides plenty of spooky fun in Hotham Park where a spring event held by students from the University of Chichester with the help of Rox also takes place.

All this maintains the Rox goals - to advance the education, awareness and appreciation of the arts and to provide chances for artists to

perform.

2016 sees Rox maintain its focus on staging professional quality music in Bognor Regis in several venues rather than one outdoor site.

The organisers have adopted the name Bognor Rox for July 30 and 31 for the performances on the Concept Stage at Legends on Bognor Regis Pier, The William Hardwicke in the town's High Street and The Claremont on Scott Street, off West Street.

Hotham Park will also play host to the festival’s Secret Garden. Around 30 acts have been secured for this popular ‘chill-out’ part of the main event.

Local musician and Rox trustee Matt Douglas says on the Rox website: "We’re looking to encompass as much of the town as possible that wanted to join in and support the weekend which will still give Bognor Regis a great vibe with music to please many tastes."

WE can not miss the fact that the Olympics have been in the press with mass coverage this past week and with much conversation happening. I’m not a sport fan but I have to admit I’ve sat and cheered at the TV on the odd occasion carried away with the excitement and pride for our country men and women.

How are they (sportsmen and women) so motivated as to achieve such ? Is this a nature versus nurture thing or much deeper? What fires those people to follow that direction and get up at dawn and run over misty hills, or cycle for hours pushing themselves hard?

ABOUT 50 members of Bognor Regis' twins in Germany have enjoyed a six day visit to the town.

THe guests came from the towns of Weil-am-Rhein and Trebbin and were hosted by members of Bognor Regis Twinning Association.

THey left on Sunday after a joint committee meeting with next year's 30th anniversary of the link with Weil-am-Rhein among the topics discussed.

One of the highlights of their stay was a reception held by the association at St Mary Magdelene Church Hall, pictured above when the chairmen of the three twinning associations gave speeches which included tributes to long-time Bognor member Hilary Nicklin.

A former committee member for many years, she has moved to Southsea.

THe speeches were followed by a buffet and some hilarious entertainment provided

by members of the Bognor association.

THe visitors enjoyed a formal reception in Butlin's by the town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Pat Dillon, soon after they arrived, pictured below.

Bognor Regis Twinning Association press officer James Clevett said: "During their stay, they were first taken on an excursion to Winchester, Alton and a ride on the Watercress Steam Railway to Alresford on which they were accompanied by Bognor twinning members Heather Perrot and David Roche.

"THe next day saw Bognor members Bob Bonner and Terry Armistead accompany the guests to Wareham, Lulworth Cove heritage site and Swanage."

THe only disappointment was rain last Friday which washed out the chance of a boat trip around Chichester Harbour. But the visitors could still look around Chichester.

It seems obvious that people do things, such as go to work, in order to get stuff they want and to avoid stuff they don't want.

Clearly for our UK Olympians they do not get money when they receive a gold medal but they do get sponsorship and propelled into public arena.

Overall, the basic perspective on motivation looks something like this: you have certain needs or wants (these terms will be used interchangeably), and this causes you to do certain things (behaviour), which satisfy those needs (satisfaction), and this can then change which needs/wants are primary (either intensifying certain ones, or allowing you to move on to other ones).

People clearly have different wants. THis is fortunate, because in markets this creates the very desirable situation where, because you value stuff that I have but you don't, and I value stuff that you have that I don't, we can trade in such a way that we are both happier as a result.

Another idea is that motivation is based on need in this order: growth needs (development of competence and realization of potential), relatedness needs (satisfactory relations with others) and then existence needs (physical well-being).

Interestingly , this theory states that as you start satisfying higher needs, they become more intense (e.g., the more power you get the more you want power), like an addiction. Could this be such for those Olympians – the more they win the more they want?

Or is it all about your background and life – typically the need for achievement, to accomplish something difficult to prove your value; need for affiliation, by doing so you form a closer personal relationships with someone you are trying to gain their attention and so on?

Perhaps we should put a big blackboard up in town and ask everyone what motivates them – it would certainly get people thinking.

TWINNING links in Bognor Regis date back to 1980 when Neville Nisi, a reporter on the former Bognor Regis Post newspaper set up the town's twinning association.

He was mainly responsible for establishing the link with the French town of St Maur des Fosses, just south of Paris.

St Maur has a promenade named after Bognor Regis as well as a park.

Weil-am-Rhein was the next town to be twinned with Bognor. THat occurred in 1987 and the town is notable for having a chair factory and giant chair sculptures acknowledge its presence.

THe twinning with Trebbin arose in 1995 as a result of its twinning with Weil. In the early years, the two German towns were on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall.

Last year, the amazing fundraisers who took on the 75-mile cycle challenge helped to raise around £300,000 for the BHF’s vital research into heart disease. THis year we want to raise even more.

RESIDENTS of the Bognor Regis area have been invited to a special dementia awareness day.

THe Alzheimer's Society has organised the occasion to give them the chance to learn about dementia and the support available around the town for patients with the condition.

THe charity has teamed up with West Sussex library service to stage the event from 10.30am-3pm at Bognor Regis Library in London Road.

Representatives from Alzheimer's Society, Coastal West Sussex Mind, Crossroads, Age UK and many others will be present to answer questions.

Sue Rennie, the Alzheimer's Society's services manager for West Sussex, said: "THis is a great opportunity for anyone to come along and find out more about dementia and the kind of help and support that is available in the area.

"THere are 3,343 people with dementia in the Arun area, and with the right support and information, they can live well with dementia."

THere will also be the chance to explore items from West Sussex libraries' reminiscence collection of objects, books and music as well as being able to talk to librarians about their housebound reader service.

THey also run a reading well books on prescription service for dementia with the books endorsed by health professionals and available from libraries in the county.

construction of the gaol was complete, it had five cells; one of the cells was allocated for women while the others occupied by men.

Officials were unhappy with the position of the new gaol, labelling it an ‘unfit and insecure place’.

Due to the lack of space, it was intended for inmates awaiting trial or those sentenced to simple imprisonment without hard labour, a common punishment of the time. Prisoners were used for quarrying, building roads or underwent labour within the prisons; most had tread wheels installed.

THe gaol inspectors constantly spoke of Chichester gaol in a negative manner especially since it had no way of enforcing hard labour.

In 1834, G. Long, Esquire, one of the commissioners of the Municipal Corporation Inquiry, inspected the Gaol, and declared the gaol at Chichester was the worst for health and security of any he had visited.

by AMY HANSON, work experience student, The Novium Museum SINCE 1107-9, the Sussex county gaol was situated in Chichester Castle until it was demolished in 1217. Following this, a new gaol was built upon the site of the castle in what is now known as Priory Park.

Here the county gaol remained until 1269 when Richard, Earl of Cornwall, gave the site to the Greyfriars. It was some time after this that the gaol was relocated to the East gate of the city, and demoted to a city gaol.

THe North, West, and South gates were demolished around the year 1772 but the East gate remained due to the fact that it supported the city gaol.

It utilised the gatehouse over the arch and a small area next to the gate allocated as a yard for prisoners to exercise. THe gaol had only two or three cells, it is perhaps for this

Aldwick 2s lock horns with Ram in T20 final ALDWICK 2s have qualified for the West Sussex Invitation Cricket League Lords T20 Plate final and will face Ram after they beat Aldwick 1s in the other semi-final, writes IAN GUPPY. Aldwick 1s were victorious against Worthing in the first quarter final with Ryan Purvis and Adam Robinson topping the scores to give Aldwick a healthy 170 after 20 overs.

Worthing were always behind the run rate and Harry Rossor was the pick of the bowlers getting six for14 off his four overs The 2s faced Belgrave Adelaide in their quarter final and were all out for 103.

Some very tight bowling and excellent fielding set up a momentous win pitting them against Portslade and the 1s vs Ram. Ram seemed to be labouring after 12 overs but IPL star and the whole of the league top scorer Hersh Tank came into play.

He bludgeoned 87 off the last 8 overs to set the 1s 183 to win.

Ryan Purvis and Alex Cooper opened

and both kept the scorecard ticking but try as they might Aldwick were always behind and finished up on a score of 124 for 6.

The 2s bowled first against Portslade and bowled them out for 97.

Steady batting led them home and it was Alex Rowland who hit the winning runs to set up a final on September 4 at Preston Nomads in a Division 6 vs Division 1 encounter facing the 1s victors Ram. Meanwhile, Eastergate 1st XI lost by eight wickets at their Arundel counterparts in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1.

A rain delayed start meant overs were reduced to 37-33.

Arundel won the toss and elected to field and the visitors scored 164 for 7 (37 overs) with Justin Poyser 66 the pick of the batsmen.

In the Arundel innings Joe Bain hit 91 and Jacob Temple made 40,in a first wicket, 132-run partnership as they triumphed with 168 for 2 (32.5 overs).

Matthew Geffen was in fine form, too, and took three for 54 from 14 overs in this Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 3 fixture at Priory Park.

THe home side won the toss and elected to field and the bowlers set about the visitors, who scored 204 for 8 (53 overs).

In reply, Chichester eclipsed that score in 45 overs when they reached 205 for 6, with Sam Harvey top scoring with 61no.

George Stephens hit 41, Peter Lamb scored 39 and Ben Caldera struck 26 to hand the home side victory.

Chichester Priory Park 3rd XI secured promotion at Wisborough Green 2nd XI with a seven-wicket victory.

THe visitors lost the toss in and chose to field in this West Sussex Invitation League Division 6 encounter and the

MIDDLETON suffered defeat against Horsham in the final of Sussex Premier League Gray-Nicolls T20 Cup at Hove.

Horsham won the toss and batted and scored 161 for 5. Middleton’s Jamie THompson took three wickets in four balls to help the cause but in reply his side fell short in reaching 108 for 9 they lost by 53 runs.

THe previous day, Middleton 1st XI had gone to THree Bridges for a clash in the Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 2 only to see the action reduced to a T20.

Middleton elected to field and the home side scored 114 for 8 (20 overs).

And they came up against Sean Heather in fine form as he took 3-13 and then scored 88no as the visitors 118 for 2 (13.3 overs) Middleton 2nd XI beat Goring By Sea by nine wickets in Sussex Premier

Robins run riot with 15-1 win at Ferring!

BOSHAM recorded their biggest-ever league win with a 15-1 massacre of Ferring in Southern Combined League Two on Tuesday night.

A goal fest ensued at the Glebelands as the Robins ran riot.

Jake Lafferty fired in five, Marco Giambelardini hit four, and Oliver Gilbert, Neil Redman and Graeme Dowden grabbed a brace each to leave the home side stunned.

Meanwhile, Chichester City Ladies got their new FA Premier Southwest One campaign off top the perfect start with a 4-0 win over Cheltenham at Oaklands Park, writes ALAN PRICE. Chloe Dowdell opened the scoring and Jade Widdows, fresh off the bench, was the beneficiary with a perfectly timed leap to bullet a header home from a Becky Baron corner.

Boxing at grassroots level is just as bad with certain clubs having their officials scoring the contests on their club shows — subsequently receiving most of the fortunate results.

THere are few more deflating feelings as a boxer then knowing you've won a bout, only to be robbed of victory by poor judging. Something really needs to be done when this sort of thing happens, especially to youngsters, as it can make young lads walk away from the sport.

City boss demands more

City dispatched Lancing 3-1 in the Peter Bentley Cup on Saturday with goals from Jake Gale just before the break and Dan Watts shortly after the interval.

Omar Barry made it 3-1 after 76 minutes after Lewis Finney had

pulled one back for the visitors on 55 minutes.

THe victory came just days after City narrowly defeated rivals Littlehampton 3-2 in the Southern Combination League Premier Division.

THey also have an opening day league win over Eastbourne under their belts.

Now Rutherford has asked that his charges up their game again for the visit of Newhaven to Oaklands Park tomorrow (Saturday), KO 3pm.

He said: “We still haven't played very well to be honest, not to the level

that I’m expecting us to but we've ended up getting results.

“I'm happy with that, there’s nothing wrong with not playing as well as you want to if you end up winning games but we’ll see a little more against Newhaven.

“I did see something but we have more to come yet. I've seen 20-minute spells in games against Littlehampton and Eastbourne that we can play ever so well but it will be nice to get 90 minutes out of everyone.
