New plans to save Pagham FRESH plans to keep Pagham safe are set to be submitted.

Residents of the flood-threatened area have joined with experts to devise new coast protection proposals.

THeir latest scheme – set to initially cost more than £200,000 – involves installing three groynes along the most vulnerable stretch of coastline.

Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said: “We need to look

seriously at this matter again.

“During Storm Eleanor last month, the sea came within five metres of some of the bungalows along East Front Road.

THe limit for emergency action is 10m, so it was well within that.

“Some of the water ran between the bungalows and into the road behind. We can’t let incidents like that happen again.

“THere is real consternation in the area about this threat. We are getting a

significant quantity of letters, phone calls and emails at the parish council asking us to install groynes along the beach to provide a long-term solution to this problem.

“If we get this scheme approved, we would want to start work this summer.

We don’t want to be going through another winter like this one again.”

THe planning application to carry out the work is on the verge of being

submitted by Pagham Beach Holdings, which owns the Pagham Beach estate, to Arun District Council.

THe decision to go ahead was agreed at a meeting of the revived Pagham flood defence steering group, which is a subcommittee of the parish council.

Homes protestors urged to continue CAMPAIGNERS have been urged to stage fresh protests against planned housing in North Bersted.

Formal consultation into major modifications of Arun District Council’s land use blueprint ends in two weeks.

THose opposed to the council’s local plan’s suggestion of 2,500 homes on fields north of Chalcraft Lane were given guidelines on which to base their latest objections. Campaign group BAD DEAL treasurer Gill Yeates set out the ideas at its public meeting last week.

She said: “THere is strength in numbers.

We need to get together now, share information to make a strong case and come up with some initiatives about what we can do.

“THere is some hope in some places.

If the council fails to hit 75 per cent of its target, the plan has to be reviewed and that would mean the objectively assessed need for housing being reviewed. THat number is the key.”

Among those present at the meeting last THursday was Chalcraft Lane resident John Hibbert. He agreed to put up one of BAD DEAL’s placards.

He said he had lived in his house since 1980 and the area for 64 years.

“THe housing plans are disgusting because of the traffic they will cause. THere will be extra noise and waste but there’s no infrastructure and there’s no jobs around here,” she said.

THe housing proposal is one of the strategic sites – given the name West Bersted - put forward by Arun to meet its

government target of 1,000 homes a year for the 20 years from 2011.

THe local plan is being considered by planning inspector Mark Dakeyne after he led a public inquiry last autumn.

THe main modifications were made by Arun based on his initial reaction to the draft plan. He is expected to issue his final report in April.

Martin Lury, the chairman of Bersted & Aldwick Developments Destroying Environment & Agricultural Land, warned the final number of houses off Chalcraft Lane was likely to rise to 3,000.

“THese houses are all about local greed of the landowners, not local need. We are in favour of houses for local need. We all want our kids to have somewhere to live.

But this is not what is being provided.

“THese houses are going to be for people coming in, with a few exceptions, and they are going to out-commute for jobs.”

THe group would be hiring an environment consultant to conduct a detailed survey of the area to be able to provide expert advice about the planned housing’s impact on wildlife.

Another of the 50 or so people at the meeting at the Aldwick parish offices, North Bersted resident Tony Lancaster, said: “THis site should be called West Busted, not West Bersted, because no-one is going to be able to afford to live in the homes.”

One of the founders of the CPRE's Arun branch, Michael Warden, warned it could take decades to build the houses. "You will have 30-40 years of chaos," he said.

A YEAR'S extra funding has been agreed for a community advice service in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

THe £117,020 backing will go Citizen's Advice to enable it to carry on with its centres in the two towns as well as Chichester.

THe money was agreed by Arun District Council's cabinet, subject to the new budget of the council being backed by members next Wednesday.

Cllr Trevor Bence, Arun's cabinet member for residential services, said it was important Citizen's Advice was able to continue its work.

"THis seems to me to be a no brainer.

"Universal credit starts in July and will be completed in October. It's vital this advice service is provided, especially in 2018 to tackle the rollout of universal credit in Arun and the need of people to get some advice."

Robin Wickham, Arun's group head of community wellbeing, said the council's contribution to the service had been unchanged for four years.

A new competitive tender will be launched for the service this year to start from April, 2019. It will be led by the county council and involve all district and borough councils in West Sussex.

f Adelicia Lavender with two of her trophies TALENTED young sailor Adelicia Lavender has received coaching from the best to put her on course for world glory.

THe Bognor Regis pupil spent Tuesday being tutored by double Oympic gold medal winner Sarah Ayton.

THe one-to-one session on Hayling Island helped Adelicia prepare for this year’s national and world championships in the RS Tera yachts.

Speaking before her special day, Adelicia said: “My mother requested Sarah to coach me and she said yes.

“I’ve met Sarah a couple of times but I’ve never been coached by her before. I would like to follow her to an Olympic gold medal.

“It would be challenging but I like a challenge. I sail single-handedly because the decisions are all mine. I can’t blame anyone else if something goes wrong.”

THe entry of Adelicia, 13, into this year’s

RS Terra British championships will see her travel to Cardiff. She was among the 50 selected in her age group after she was in a national training squad of 125.

THe championships will take place in the summer holiday. Adelicia will also be a competitor in the RS Tera world event at Weymouth during those weeks.

She said: “I’m delighted to be selected. I just have to be confident enough to do my best. I’m looking forward to the event. It’s quite nerve-wracking but exciting at the same time. It will be good to have GB on my sail.”

Adelicia, who attends THe Regis School, took up sailing in her home town of Littlehampton. She saw the boats at the Arun Yacht Club on the River Arun when she was about ten and wanted to have a go. “I found it exciting,” she said. “It was exciting sailing through the waves and

having the wind on my face.

Her talents at the helm saw her win a few prizes and she decided to switch to Felpham Sailing Club in Blakes Road last April because of its successes in the events in which she competed.

Her first season sailing off Felpham beach saw her collect seven titles in her age group, including the Princes Pot, and at least three others – such as best newcomer - against competitors aged up to 18. Even some adults are no match for her abilities with the sail.

Adelicia hones her skills four or five times a week in the summer and at least once a fortnight in the winter and can speed through the waves at speeds of up to 12 knots.

Her initial success led to her being selected for last year’s RS Tera nationals but the conditions were against good sailing.

A NEW Lidl store for Bognor Regis will help to create 100 jobs.

THe company has been given approval to expand its presence in the town. Its plan for a new bigger outlet on the opposite side of the A29 from its current store has been backed unanimously by councillors. THe scheme is also expected to enable THe Range to move into the town.

Ben Read, the planning agent for the developer, said: “THis will create about 100 full-time equivalent jobs in total, of which 70 will be new jobs for the area.”

THe plans would enable two new businesses to open on the site of Oldlands Farm in Steyning Way. “One of those will be relocating to the area and one a new business to the area,” he told Arun District Council’s development control committee on Wednesday.

“Approving this scheme will provide an attractive gateway to the wider site and a clear signal of investor confidence in the district.”

THe scheme had been overwhelmingly backed at a recent exhibition, he said. It would not add to the retail element of the site’s development plan but alter the goods which could be sold within it and would also allow one of the approved units to be sub-divided into two.

Hanbury (PM) Ltd, the site’s developers, had asked Arun to vary the original consent for the land’s development. THe council had restricted the retail use to bulky goods, like fridges and freezers, to limit the

impact of a new store on established retail areas.

But Hanbury sought to change this to enable discount convenience, or everyday, goods to be sold from 1,325sq m of the previously agreed 4,366sq m of retail space.

Its retail consultants had estimated the new Lidl’s turnover would be £8.21m a year helped by its extra 316.7sq m. Some 70 per cent of this will come from the existing store. Most of the rest will come from Tesco, M&S Foodhall and Sainsbury’s.

Arun planning officer David Easton told the committee its retail consultants had shown a slightly higher impact.

But the Lidl should still be allowed.

“THerefore, the level of trade diversion and impact are not expected to cause trading difficulties for food stores located within Bognor Regis town centre,” he said.

THe impact of retail uses had been considered on the surrounding roads.

But Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: “I have an issue to do with the highways. We all know the pressure that particular network is under at the moment.

“It just seems to me we keep piling the pressure on. It would not be so bad if it was for an industrial unit but increasing the retail use means there is going to be a constant flow of traffic to the site all day long.”

THe Bognor Regis Regeneration Board had called for the new Lidl to be part of Arun’s plans for the Hothamton car park in Queensway.

` Arun's budget FURTHER backing has been given to Arun District Council's latest budget.

Cabinet members recommended the increase of 2.99 per cent in its share of the total council tax bills from April 1.

THis is equal to £5.13 a year for band D properties and will take Arun's council tax share to £176.40.

Cllr Gillian Brown, the council's leader, said: "THis budget is good news. THe increase is less than the rate of inflation."

THe budget goes to all members of the council for final approval next Wednesday.

` Byelections day VOTERS in two areas of Bognor Regis will be going to the polls next week.

THe electors of Marine and Hatherleigh wards will choose new councillors next THursday in a series of byelections.

In Marine, the voting will be for a district and a town councillor and in Hatherleigh for a town councillor.

A total of seven candidates are standing for election.

` Decking plan A PROPOSAL has been submitted to install decking in front of a seafront kiosk in Bognor Regis. Coffee Cup Portsmouth has applied to Arun District Council to put in the decking with a wooden windbreak to form a seating area on the shingle beach opposite its premises.

Tesco told to solve parking RETAIL giant Tesco has been given a year to sort out parking at its Felpham store.

Councillors imposed a 12-month limit on changes they approved for the deliveries to the busy Tesco Express outlet in Felpham Way. Arun District Council’s development control committee agreed to relax restrictions on the times during which the deliveries can take place.

But their concerns about the safety of the site led them to agree to review the changes in a year.

Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham) said: “THis place has the worst parking area I have seen in this town. It’s absolutely disgraceful.

“THe lorries are supposed to go to parking bays at the back of the premises to make deliveries but they can’t because vehicles are parked there and they can’t get round.

“THere is no control over parking. People do what they like where they like.

“THere’s not much we can do with the layout. It’s the way people park that causes the problems.”

Cllr Barbara Oakley (C, Middleton) said: “THe situation is appalling. I nearly had a prang there yesterday because of the extraordinary behaviour of another driver.”

Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham W) said: “It’s a nightmare. It’s so dangerous when these lorries park outside this shop. THey have great big trollies they deliver this stuff in.

"THey should really be going round the back. It would be much better and much

safer.”

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: “I can see why the conditions were put on in the first place because of the schools in close promixity in Pennyfields and people travelling there early in the morning and people travelling to work.

“I know there were a lot of doubts about that location when it was approved. I am not particularly happy about this new arrangement.”

THe store, close to the roundabout with Flansham Lane/Felpham Way was approved by Arun in 2008 in a former car showroom. Councillors said then deliveries should only take place from 9am-4pm daily. Tesco asked Arun to allow it to extend that period to 6am-11pm daily.

But highway officers at West Sussex County Council objected. THis led Tesco to amend its delivery times to 7am-11pm daily with a ban between 3pm-6pm. Only newspapers are allowed to be delivered in the early morning.

Arun’s members agreed to the timings at last Wednesday’s meeting. THey also want Tesco to devise a delivery management plan within two months.

District council planning officer Dan Vick said: “It is expected this will set out measures for how the delivery parking area will remain open and unobstructed.

“For example, ‘no parking’ markings adjacent to the store – enforced by staff – the coning off of the area when deliveries are due and a system to ensure the store is notified of both Tesco and non-Tesco deliveries.”

Cafe owner congratulated by MP for investing in Pagham business A PAGHAM cafe is opening all year round after a refurbishment.

Pagham Beach Cafe used to serve its meals and hot and cold drinks in the summer only.

But its owner, Maria Griggs, has expanded the Beach Road operation close to the seafront to enable her to attract customers throughout the year.

She was congratulated by Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP, Nick Gibb, on her enterprise in undergoing the significant upgrade and refurbishment.

He visited her business last Friday to

see the results of her investment.

He said: "Pagham Beach Cafe is a well-known and well-loved local cafe that serves visitors as well as local residents.

"With all the difficulties we have had with the beach in recent years, it is good that a local business that depends on tourism and visitors is doing well."

THe cafe has been in the Griggs family for 42 years.

It was established by Maria's father, Joe, and the business's signature burger, the 'Joe Burger', is named after him.

Golf course promises an adventure in town's park

ANIMALS await golfers who venture on to the new course in Bognor Regis.

THe first visitors to the Wildforest Falls attraction in Hotham Park have enjoyed pitting their skills around its 18 holes populated with models of a bear, a fox and a squirrel among others. THe clock tower of Hotham Park House also provides a putt-through on one of the holes.

THe adventure golf course - which cost six figures - was opened on Tuesday through the partnership between Arun District Council and its outdoor facility management contractor, ISS Facility Services.

Arun has worked with ISS for more than 20 years. THe course has been created on the site of the park's pitch and putt next to its northern wall. Extra parking spaces have been made for the course and a kiosk built to sell some refreshments.

Arun director of services Philippa Dart said: "It is really exciting to see the golf course open. It is a quality facility.

"I am delighted we are in a position to deliver it for the people of the district.

"I think it will take the park to another level and make more people want to come in. It is on the doorstep of the University of Chichester and Butlin's and provides an outdoor activity away from the beach One of Arun's councillors for the park, Cllr Paul Wells, said: "THis is a fantastic facility and will add to the work that has been done in the park.

"Hopefully, this will match some of the facilities we have along the seafront."

Hotham Park Heritage Trust chairman Rosemary Warren said: "THe golf course is a splendid addition to the park and is a new idea for the town.

"It has been ten years since we received Heritage Lottery Fund backing and the improvements that have since taken place in the park are absolutely marvellous. THe park is looking extremely good."

From page one Offshore Church Norton Spit, which had been forcing tides in and out of the Pagham Harbour mouth on to the beach to scour away the shingle for several years.

But Cllr Radmall said the spit was constantly evolving to make it harder than originally thought to cut the channel and protect it with pebble walls.

THis left groynes along the East Front Road coastline as the best solution, he claimed.

THese would be hard wooden stub groynes about 15-20m long and bolstered on their southwestern side by small rock buttresses to protect them from the prevailing tides.

THe fantail design of the buttresses would enable the waves to be deflected harmlessly along the side of the groynes, said Cllr Radmall.

“We have got the designs already.

It’s just a case of getting the final details for the application and the supporting information,” he said.

Cllr Radmall hoped in time to increase the number of groynes to five and then to eight when further funding became available.

THis would enable all the East Front Road frontage to be protected and some of West Front Road.

THe money to pay for the first groynes was likely to come from the parish council’s flood protection fund, which it has built up from council tax from residents.

But it would be seeking further help from the area’s businesses and the government, he added, towards the cost of the additional groynes.

Help for hearts arrives CARDIAC arrest victims in Aldwick could be saved by new equipment.

THe congregation at St Richard's Church is celebrating the arrival of a defibrillator to be installed at its Mosse Hall. THe item could be crucial in quickly restoring the heart beat of a person who has suffered a cardiac arrest.

Father Lawson Nagel, the church's vicar, Dr Simon Hawkes, pictured below holding the defibrillator, received help from one of the area's GPs and congregation member, Dr Helen Parkinson, next to the defibrillator, to apply to Sussex Heart Charity for a grant of about £1,600 towards a defibrillator and two training courses in its use alongside basic life support.

Dr Parkinson said: "St Richard's Church and its adjoining Mosse Hall are in constant use by the local community. Church services, choirs, bell ringers, a daily nursery school, slimming and exercise clubs, and community events such as fairs, coffee mornings and quiz nights take place there.

"By housing the defibrillator externally, on the

outside wall of Mosse Hall - it's readily accessible and well situated, just off the main road running through Aldwick and Rose Green and close to the local shops, too."

THe installation of the defibrillator follows the full backing of the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, in 2016 to the save a life campaign. THis aims to ensure communities have access to an external defibrillator within easy distance.

Dr Warner said he hoped every church community would consider installing an automated external defibrillator on its premises.

THe Sussex Heart Charity has been providing support to heart services in Sussex for more than 30 years. THis has seen it place more than 150 automated external defibrillators across the area as well as supporting other projects.

Sudden cardiac arrests happen to about 30,000 pople in the UK every year and can strike without any warning. It can be fatal if a heart does not return to a regular rhythym within 5-7 minutes of a cardiac arrest.

Grant given to town's theatre A £30,000 grant has been awarded to help to keep live entertainment thriving in Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council agreed to provide the funding to the Arun Arts charity for its work at the town's Regis Centre.

THe council's cabinet approved the funding - to be provided in two annual grants of £15,000 - on Monday.

Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: "THe venue needs to have that long-term financial stability to go ahead."

THe backing was a tribute to the hard work of Hazel Latus, who chairs the Arun Arts charity, which runs the centre and its Alexandra THeatre, she said.

"She has turned it around," said Cllr Brown. "She has got a huge number of community groups going there, 15 a week, with a programme of family events, the panto, youth theatre and some fantastic classical music concerts, which are really, really good.

"Over the past two years, everything (at the centre) has vastly improved. THe number of performances has increased and the audiences have also increased."

THe Arun Arts charity shop has moved from the centre to premises on the opposite side of the Place St Maur to create a new studio, she said.

THe visitor information point was also being moved in the opposite direction into the centre to generate extra footfall.

Arun Arts has managed and operated the centre for some 20 years.

It has built on its role as a community theatre to develop strong links with the University of Chichester to develop high quality entertainment with amateur and

professional performers, such as Griff Rhys Jones, this Sunday.

A marketing post was established in October, 2015, with a previous grant from Arun, and a box office system was put in the following year.

Arun group head of economy Denise Vine told the cabinet the impact of the changes was shown in the growth of audiences and shows.

THe 2011 figures of 35 shows and 22,924 tickets sold had soared to 95 productions and 45,139 tickets last year.

"THese are impressive and improving figures that have doubled the 2011 audience numbers," she said. "THe theatre has an average capacity of 72 per cent and many shows are sold out.

"In 2017, 31 events were at 90 per cent capacity or above. Ticket sales on the new system are recorded at £547,310 sold for 2017 events. THe theatre is now successfully using social media to promote its shows and 40 per cent of tickets are booked online."

Looking forward, Arun Arts was developing links with Chichester Festival THeatre to see if they could work together to provide events for low income families, said Mrs Vine.

Talks had also been held with Arts Council England about developing touring drama shows. But the seafront building needed constant maintenance such as £70,000 for recent roof repairs and £40,000-plus spent on theatre equipment.

THe district council's longer term vision for the seafront site is to incorporate it in a winter gardens attraction as a major regeneration project in the town.

A statement by the company's planning agent, Stephen Jupp, with the application to Arun District Council, says Bruce Dixon began in February, 1967, but was unable to stay in its present Shripney Road premises.

"We can't change everything overnight to whichever way we wanted to go," she said. "Each one will be looked at on its own merits. THat is contained in our constitution."

Cllr Mrs Brown said: "I'm pleased we have managed to resolve many of the problems we thought we had with the toilets and that the parish councils decided to work in partnership with us."

Cabinet member for residential services Cllr Trevor Bence contrasted their backing with the refusal of Bognor Regis Town Council to pay towards the toilets. "In this day and age, it's really sad the town council has not got involved with this," he said.

SENIOR councillors have refused to rule out turning more public toilets around Bognor Regis into unisex facilities.

Arun District Council's cabinet members said they would not consider setting a policy for or against the change.

THis clears the way for additional loos to follow the new conveniences approved for Bognor Regis seafront to be capable of being used by men and women.

As reported, some councillors have called for single sex facilities to be kept.

THe cabinet was asked to confirm if a policy of unisex loos was in place.

But Arun's chief executive, Nigel Lynn, said at Monday's meeting: "We do not have a policy on unisex toilets. I do not believe we need one either."

THe council's constitution set out that officers should manage the daily delivery of services councillors wanted to be provided. THe type of toilet facilities came within the scope of that set of rules, he said.

Two men who claimed to be from the water board knocked on the front door of the resident in St John's Close and asked to go in. While they ran the taps, one of the men stole money from a handbag.

Detective Constable Ellie Hughes said: "Both victims describe one of the men as white, in his 30s, slim-build, wearing a woolly hat, dark jacket, dark trousers and a fluorescent jacket.

"One of the men has briefly shown a ID card but there was obviously no photo or branding."

She urged residents to speak to their older relatives, friends and neighbours to warn them about letting strangers into their homes.

Helpers thanked for float support VOLUNTEERS have been thanked for their help with a favourite fundraiser for Bognor Regis.

THe 60 or so people who gave their time to Bognor Hotham Rotary Club were invited to a special evening in recognition of their unpaid efforts.

THey enjoyed an excellent meal at the town's golf club followed by a fastmoving juggling act by international stage and street performer Dan Hall.

Rotary club press officer Brian Clarke said: "Dan managed to keep his audience spellbound for 45 minutes with his continuous quick wit while juggling everything from balls, hats, a yo-yo, and even a melon and a pineapple.

"THe evening was rounded off with a raffle and wide range of excellent prizes."

THe volunteers had helped the club bring the spirit of Christmas to streets

around the Bognor Regis area with its annual Santa illuminated float.

THe well-established Christmas tradition raised what Mr Clarke described as an amazing £11,584 last December. All the money will be used to help those in need and worthy causes around the town.

"THe 'thank you' evening is paid for by club members and out of club funds," said Mr Clarke.

"It is Bognor Hotham Rotary Club's way of saying 'thank you' to all those who helped with the float collections during December."

He added the club would always consider requests from worthy causes and those who needed help.

Royal party plan for park ROYAL family fans in Bognor Regis will be able to celebrate their latest wedding.

Bognor Regis town councillors have agreed to stage a party in Hotham Park to mark the nuptials.

Details of the occasion for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19 will now be worked out by the council's officers. THe ceremony from Windsor will be broadcast on a big screen in keeping with the two previous celebrations in the park.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick told the events, promotion and leisure committee on Monday: "THe last royal wedding that was broadcast from the park was a hugely successful

event with the park packed to capacity."

THat was in 2011 for the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the council would need to spend £1,500 on the event.

Backing for half of the cost of the big screen had been obtained.

THe party was one of a series of events which the town council decided to stage this year. THey will begin with a book day on April 30 in Hotham Park based on the works of The Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson.

Proms in the Park has been booked for June 23 in Hotham Park and the popular Drive THrough Time is set to take place in West Park in July 8.

Performers set to appear in West End theatre with own dance show A LONDON theatre awaits a group of Bognor Regis drama students.

THe Regis School sixth formers will head to one of the capital venues to showcase a piece they are devising.

Inspired by the theme of ‘home’, they will share it alongside other United Learning schools in April.

THey created the dance during a drama workshop with the Frantic Assembly globally renowned theatre company.

A school spokesman said: “Frantic Assembly devise theatre with a principle of never beginning with a set storyline or intention in mind but, instead, performing a series of physical tasks and then adding layers of detail before interpretation and refinement of the material. THe work is highly physical, often involving movement, contact work and lifts.”

THis work has provided the skills to go with the inspiration for ‘home’.

Year 12 student Jade Brighten, 17, said: “THe workshop was really good because we got to work in a way that was very out of our comfort zone and we learnt lots of different and new skills.

“We are really looking forward to going up to London to perform the work we make now, following the workshop.

“THe workshop has given us a lot of ideas for further exploration in lessons, following the activities that we did.”

Another of the students involved, Kieran Wake, also aged 17 in Year 12, said: “Doing the workshop opened my eyes to a new way of working and how acting can come in different forms and styles.

“I have enjoyed learning how to perform in this style. It’s very physical and almost like choreography within dance.”

Dancers from the school, in Westloats Lane, have also recently performed at the Alexandra THeatre in Bognor Regis.

THe TRS dance company took part in the annual Dance House event to showcase its work. THe school spokesman said: “THis is a fantastic opportunity to experience dance in a working theatre.

“THe standard of dance was fantastic and both our pieces were emotional, thought provoking and technically stunning.”

Jill Hoskins, for Dance House, said: “Lovely to see THe Regis (School) back again this year. THe standard of dance is raised a little higher each year and I hope that is partly down to students sharing their work with others at Dance House and gaining inspiration and the courage to create new and innovative dance pieces.”

Dance House followed the chance to watch 3 Fall Dance Company of elite dancers at the University of Chichester, including former pupil Jean Luc Coleman, perform the work of new artists and professional choreographers.

Dancers from the school also formed its latest annual entry to the county heat of Rock Challenge.

Held at the Hawth THeatre in Crawley, it resulted in seven awards for excellence.

THese included lights, stage crew, concept, use of stage and camera operator. Ruby Stead was one of those who prepared the piece, including its set, choreography, costumes, sound score and dramatic skills.

THe 15-year-old, of Year 11, said: “It was an incredible experience to be part of, because it enabled me to make new friends and also boosted my self-confidence. I was able to really enjoy performing on a professional stage.”

Holly Porter, 16, also in Year 11, was one of her fellow dancers. “Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and loved being able to work with people from Year 7 to sixth form.

“I got to dance the role of Cleopatra, which was challenging but great to play a strong female role model. Later in the dance, there was a section inspired by Princess Diana, in which I learned about her importance in history.”

At the school, its main hall was transformed into a night club-style venue for the annual sixth form music show. THis year’s theme was Route 66 – A journey across America.

by American artists like Stevie Wonder and THe Eagles. Music teacher Tobi Stathers said: “I love to watch the Year 11s and sixth form but there was something really special about seeing some younger students performing too."

At the other end of the scale, the school’s Year 10 music group of 13 students performed a recital to a small audience. For some, it was their first time performing for an audience. Head of music Tracey Munford congratulated them for doing so well.

` Bigger schools HUNDREDS of extra places for pupils around Bognor Regis are set to be created this year.

West Sussex County Council has published its latest proposals for the additional room at Felpham Community College and St Mary's Catholic Primary School.

THe latest consultations about the plans will end on March 8. If they are agreed, the enlargements should be in place by this September to cope with the extra pupils from the new housing in the area.

It is intended that 300-plus additional places will be provided at Felpham Community College to take its capacity to 1,700.

Last September saw 1,374 children at the college compared to its capacity of 1,358. THis will allow the college's yearly admission number to grow from 240 pupils to 300.

At St Mary's Catholic Primary School, the capacity will increase from 300 to 420 places. An annual rise from 60 to 45 will occur in the admissions.

Cllr Richard Burrett, county council cabinet member for education and skills, said about 50 per cent of respondents to the first set of proposals backed them and some 30 per cent were against.

"Concerns were largely raised around the increase in traffic, parking and safer routes to schools.

"If these proposals are agreed, we will continue working closely with our parents and local residents by inviting them to view the plans for the building works prior to the submission of a planning application."

Cllr Burrett is likely to delegate the final decision to his senior officers.

New concerns over cottage

A WILLIAM BLAKE enthusiast has called for one final effort to save the famous poet's Felpham cottage.

Author Beryl Kingston said she feared for the long-term future of the building if its condition was left untouched.

She was among the visitors who went along to the cottage where Blake wrote the words for what became Jerusalem at one of the open days being held to coincide with a major exhibition about him at Petworth House.

Beryl said she feared the Blake Cottage Trust, which has owned the cottage for almost 18 months ago, was unable to save it.

"I will say as loud and as clear as I can that the cottage is no longer saleable.

No potential buyer would touch it with a barge pole. It will cost several million pounds to repair it.

"THose of us who care about the place have been asking them repeatedly to start repairing it," she said. "Nothing has been done.

"Over 500 of us signed a petition urging that money should not be wasted on architects' plans and drawings but spent to start work on repairing the cottage.

"THe architects have been hired and paid. Nothing has been done to the cottage."

Since then, she said her visit showed more rafters had been broken and broken rafters and thatch had fallen into the upstairs bedrooms.

THe damp walls were covered in mould and she believed there was evidence of an insect infectation.

"THis is a very serious state of affairs," she said. "If it is left to go on much longer, the cottage will be condemned as dangerous and pulled down.

"And that is something that none of us who is concerned about it would want to see."

Beryl said she believed only the National Trust could restore the cottage with its funds and historical know-how.

She has suggested another petition to the National Trust to ask it to take the cottage over and repair it.

THe cottage, where Blake lived from 1800-1803, is a Grade II-listed building which was privately owned until the trust bought it in September, 2016.

THe trust has plans to renovate and restore it and put these on show last summer. THese consist of ridding the building of its modern extensions and building a multi-functional centre in the grounds.

Peter Johns, one of the trustees of the Blake Cottage Trust, said the building was safe. "THe cottage is stable," he said.

"It has not deteriorated at all during the winter, which was exactly to be expected.

"THe architects finalised their plans at the beginning of this month just in time for the model of them to go on show at the William Blake exhibition by the National Trust at Petworth House.

"Now the plans have been finalised, we can go to potential funders to show them that this is a real project and that is what we intend to do."

He said the work was estimated to cost £3.3m. Of that, £750,000 needed to be spent on replacing the entire thatched roof and making the building safe for visitors. THe rest would go on the planned visitor centre, the garden and improving access.

THe open days held to tie-in with the exhibition had been a success and fully booked with 30 visitors a time, he added.

Drama Tutor Support – Workers Educational Association (WEA) The Apuldram Centre is a work training facility for people with a learning disability. The drama class takes place on a Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon. The class has been functioning for some years and now needs a new volunteer to support the tutor to maximise the benefit to the students. The classes run in blocks of terms - Autumn, Spring and Summer - 30 weeks in total. The students do take part in drama performances which are open to parents/carers and other interested people. No learning disability experience is needed, but the volunteer must feel they are able to relate to people with differing abilities and has the patience to learn to communicate with each person.

Donation Centre Volunteer – St Wilfrid’s Hospice The Hospice needs to raise around £20,000 per day to run - over £7m per year. Their retail outlets help to raise a large percentage of these vital funds through the sale

Candles recall horrors of war at Auschwitz CANDLES were created by Bognor Regis students to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust.

Real candles were decorated by sixth formers at THe Regis School and paper versions were used by younger pupils ready for a whole school assembly earlier this month. Representatives from each tutor group were photographed with the artwork.

Year 12 student Chloe Hughes said: "From this, we hope every student developed a greater understanding of the Holocaust itself and also broke down the wall of the Holocaust being a large statistic of 11 million dying within such events to seeing an insight into individual stories and lives. We hope students will realise how the people within the Holocaust are just like us."

THe remembrance followed a one-day trip to Poland on which Chloe was joined by her fellow 17-year-old student, Caitlin Smith, to visit two concentration camps.

THey spent time in Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz Birkenau as well as the town of Oswiecim on a visit arranged by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

"We were selected from other candidates to attend this programme, which included two seminars in London, as well as the trip to Poland.

"In these seminars, we heard from a Holocaust survivor, Rudi Oppenheimer, as well as doing lots of activities within groups in order to extend our knowledge of the Holocaust prior to the trip, allowing us to gain a greater insight upon the day.

"Our second seminar allowed us to discuss in our group how the trip made us feel and then what we were going to take from the experience and do next back at our schools, as this trip bought people together from all over the south of the UK." THroughout January, Chloe and Caitlin presented assemblies to all of the pupils at THe Regis School, together with Diane Willson, who chairs its governors.

THese sessions saw them talk about Rudi's story, about the German persecutor Rudolf Hess and the 'humanisation' of him to try and break down the walls and stigma between monsters and victims.

Mrs Willson also spoke about her feelings of the experience.

"Following up from the assemblies, we ran a whole school tutor activity to reflect what we previously talked about," added Chloe.

"Each house was given a presentation which reflected a survivor of the Holocaust."

From this, the tutor groups decorated their candles.

AN OPEN meeting is being held next week to discuss plans to build lowcost housing.

Aldingbourne Parish Council is staging the meeting on Tuesday to find out how much support exists among the area's residents and businesses for a community land trust to be set up.

Cllr Martin Beaton, the council's chairman, says in a letter to residents: "THe parish council believes that affordable housing, i.e. for rent, or shared equity housing, should be available in the first instance for local families, or those working for local businesses, and managed locally.

"To achieve this local control, the parish council is promoting the idea of creating a community land trust which would hold the housing stock on behalf of the local community and prioritise access for local people."

THe meeting will take place at 7pm in the Methodist Hall in Westergate.

"Community land trusts are charitable trusts with local membership. THe parish council cannot manage such a trust, so it would need to be established as a separate legal entity," said Cllr Beaton.

"THe meeting is open to all residents, including those in Eastergate and Barnham, as it is equally applicable to the three parishes and it is important we work together for local benefit."

He added that the parish council still opposed the thousands of homes in the area proposed by Arun District Council.

But it was important the community benefited regardless of the final amount of housing built.

Caring students raise thousands of pounds CHILDREN with cancer were among the good causes backed by kind-hearted Felpham students.

Chestnut Tree House children's hospice is one of the causes they chose to benefit from the latest charity week at Felpham Community College.

THe two other charities to receive the results of their fundraising efforts are Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. Activities took place last week across all age groups to ensure as much money as possible was raised.

College headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Every charity week we run a full and varied programme of activities and it is great to see the students'

enthusiasm.

"We run events for charity throughout the academic year but this is the week we have a timetable of daily activities and encourage everyone to take part.

"Well done and thank you to the students and staff for their efforts and for the support from parents."

THe special week has been running for more than 35 years and is much anticipated. THe 2017 week raised £3,300 for various charities.

THe latest action-packed week was again overseen by the college's sixth form charity committee. THe fun included the Felpham's Got Talent

run by each year's students, a sponsored dog walk with a record number of participants, sponge throws at staff, pictured below left, and sporting events like dodgeball, football and swimming.

Break and lunch times were also busy with buzzing entrepreneurs selling various edible and homemade goods and running competitions. Sixth formers took on teachers in a quiz. THe week ended with a non-school uniform/fancy dress day for everyone.

Club's birthday A QUARTER of a century of friendships has been celebrated at a Pagham club.

More than 30 members of Pagham Friendship Club joined in its 25th birthday party last week.

THey enjoyed a celebration cake, some Bucks' Fizz, a tea party and a trip down memory lane.

Outgoing president Joy Stillwell, 76, also used the occasion to formally hand over the role to bring to an end her 25 years in helping to run the club. She said: "I felt it was the right time to retire. I will still be attending our meetings but I'll be sitting in the back row.

"I can't believe it's been 25 years since we began the club. I've got to meet a lot of nice people, made a lot of friendships over the years and that's what the club is all about."

` Vehicles raided TWO VEHICLES were raided on the same day in nearby villages.

THe first crime saw a handbag stolen between 12.45pm and 1.20pm last Saturday from a vehicle parked in Dukes Road, Fontwell.

A few hours later, between 3pm and 4pm, a vehicle parked in Park Lane, Slindon, was entered and a purse was stolen.

Two days earlier, last THursday, a black briefcase was stolen from a vehicle in Nyewood Lane in Bognor Regis.

A PAIR of semi-detached houses in Eastergate have been given the go-ahead by councillors.

Arun district members agreed on Wednesday to back the scheme for the properties on land west of Fontwell Avenue. But they insisted a service road to the site should be built before building work began to stop delivery vehicles stopping on Fontwell Avenue.

Aldingbourne Parish Council and two residents had objected to the proposal.

Donation helps sight loss charity to expand f Charlie Fielding with some of the musicians

Bands perform to help Charlie MUSICIANS will be turning back the clock tomorrow in Bognor Regis.

A line-up of original artistes from the sixties will be taking to the stage for the latest 60s Revival night.

A total of 35 musicians will be taking part for free in the ever-popular annual concert from 7pm-midnight at the Riverside Caravan Centre in Shripney Road.

Previous events have attracted hundreds of music lovers keen to enjoy the popular sounds of the decade.

4Sight Vision Support, in Victoria Drive, has been given £1,000 towards funding a support officer for two to three hours a week for a year. THis will enable it to let more people know about its work.

SUMMER IN A POT Growing summer flowering bulbs in containers is so simple and so rewarding, and makes any size of outside space a floral haven.

Often planted in spring, you can get ahead by planting summer flowering bulbs in February towards the end of the month or in March when overnight temperatures begin to get warmer.

Bulbs tend to prefer a light, well-draining soil, so if your garden has a leaning towards wet, heavy soil then planting bulbs in pots and containers is the ideal solution. Planting in February or March, once the soil has started to warm up, helps bulbs get established quickly.

Top of the list are Lilies. Hardly surprising as they have the most amazing and

flamboyant flowers and are packed full of scent, size and colour. From the vibrant deep pink of Lily Stargazer to the sublime pure white of Lily Regale there is a variety to suit any garden or outside space you can think of. Plant them anytime from autumn to spring, in a sunny spot, but make sure they are planted fairly deeply, 15-20cm deep.

Agapanthus are really easy to get started and growing them in pots or containers is perfect as it makes it easier to move them in the winter to protect them from frost.

Often called African lilies, their strappy leaves and statuesque stems, topped with balls of beautiful coloured flowers in deep blue, purple, lavender or white, fit easily into a modern garden setting or a traditional patio space. Plant Agapanthus

bulbs 8-10cm deep and 10-15cm apart in good quality, well drained compost in a sunny position.

Prairie wildflowers, Liatris, are robust, herbaceous perennials much loved by bees and butterflies. They can grow up to about 1.5m tall, have mounds of grass like leaves and flower spikes of furry, thistle-like blossoms – usually purple but also in pink or white - that flower from the top down. They need to be planted around 5cm deep.

As a rule, if you are planting bulbs in any sort of container, it’s a good idea to mix multi-purpose compost – or John Innes No 2 compost for bulbs lasting more than one season – with some grit (three parts compost, one part grit). You should also plant bulbs three times their depth and one bulb apart. Water regularly and to promote good flowering for the following year, feed with a high-potassium fertiliser such as a liquid tomato feed from the start of the growing season to when the leaves start dying back.

If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) …

• Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow some vegetables under cover • Clear beds of weeds before mulching • Mulch flower beds with a deep layer of organic matter to help condition soil • Prune summer flowering deciduous shrubs between February and March • Prune winter flower shrubs that have finished flowering • Divide bulbs such as snowdrops • Prune Wisteria • Prune hardy evergreen hedges and revitalise overgrown deciduous hedges • Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over winter and remove dead grass from evergreen grasses • Lay turf provided soil not too wet or frosty

THE 3 THIEVES OF SIGHT

AS WE AGE, diminishing vision is one of the greatest threats to our quality of life. The three most common conditions that cause sight loss, do so and are treated in different way.

Cataracts Cataract, which is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, is the biggest cause of reversible blindness worldwide, affecting 133 million people. Early signs of cataracts include blurry vision, glare from car headlights and difficulty reading.

In fact, people who wear glasses may notice their prescription changing in a short space of time. For some, their prescription is affected so much that they can often read without spectacles, something they've not been able to do for years. This is the phenomenon of 'second sight', but it's not everlasting.

Untreated, cataracts will cloud your vision until there's little left.

Treating cataracts Of all the conditions that will make you go blind, we know the most about cataract. We now combine micro-incision surgery with foldable lenses and phacoemulsification so you don't have to wait to go effectively blind before we can treat you, and we can achieve fantastic results.

Glaucoma Sometimes referred to as 'the silent thief of sight', glaucoma often develops with no pain and no symptoms until it is very advanced.

Once glaucoma has affected vision, there's no going back. Glaucoma often runs in families so it's particularly important to have regular eye health checks if you have a family history.

All types of glaucoma affect the optic nerve which conveys signals from the eye to the brain. The nerve is made up of over 1.2 million nerve fibres. With glaucoma, bundles of these nerves start to die and gradually cause loss of your peripheral, navigating vision.

Treating glaucoma We're not sure exactly what causes glaucoma, but we do know that we can slow down the disease by lowering the eye pressure. This can be achieved using eye drops, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of these methods.

When caught early, glaucoma can be treated and controlled. The best we can hope for is to preserve the sight you have left but sometimes the disease is aggressive and all we can do is slow it down.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common reason behind blind registration in the UK. In AMD there is death of light-sensitive receptors in the retina. Signs of AMD include distortion, blurred vision, being unable to focus on the centre of your vision.

The chance of you having AMD is greatly increased by age, smoking and family history

(30x more likely to have AMD if it has affected one of your parents).

Test yourself for the early signs Ophthalmologists often use the Amsler Grid to test for the early signs of AMD. You can also use the grid provided below or apply the same idea while you complete crossword puzzles in a newspaper. Here’s how to do it: • If you wear reading glasses, put them on and position your face at a normal reading distance • Cover one eye and focus on the dot at the centre

• Do any of the lines look wavy, blurred or distorted?

• Can you see all corners and sides of the grid?

• Are there any missing or dark areas?

• Repeat with your other eye

All the lines should look straight and the boxes should appear to be the same size and each intersection should form a 90 degree angle. If this is not what you see and you have answered yes to any of the above questions have a professional eye examination done as soon as possible.

Treating wet and dry AMD Dry AMD is caused by a build-up of breakdown products from dying cells in the retina. There’s nothing that can be done to treat it, but it progresses very slowly. Wet AMD, where bleeding occurs on the retina, progresses rapidly. Its development can be slowed, but not stopped, by injecting drugs into the eye every 4-6 weeks. If caught early, this may preserve your sight enough to continue activities like driving.

Put your heart into looking good and feeling good I LOVE Valentine's Day simply because it’s a great excuse to get romantic! Not that you need an excuse, but the love hearts, the chocolates or the aroma of a beautiful bunch of flowers can all help to increase our desires and feelings of love, which may just put us in the mood for a bit of sexy time!

However, it might be good to know that having sex and sharing those intimate moments could actually be beneficial to your health on so many levels, including helping you to stay looking younger! Sex boosts our levels of a human's antiageing hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) - a key factor in keeping us young. After orgasm, levels of DHEA in the blood rise to five times the normal level. Apparently, couples in their 60s still having regular sex looked between five and seven

years younger than those no longer having sex.

According to ‘experts’, the faster blood flow during sex increases the level of oxygen in the body, promoting skin renewal. Sweating while having sex cleanses the skin pores, making the skin look brighter, giving an overall healthier glow.

Also during sex the body significantly increases the production of oestrogen, a hormone that tightens the skin and smooths fine lines on the face, but it also increases the heart rate and stimulates the brain to release more serotonin. Serotonin is a happiness hormone, a key anti-depressant and the main reason to smile after sex.

Sex also gives you far greater body confidence, because sex is a workout and people who are having sex regularly have better tone and shape.

Just a minimum of 20 minutes of sex means burning at least 200 calories. THis is like running 15 minutes on a treadmill (but way more fun).

THe fitter we are, the better we feel, but not only do we feel good, men and women who often have sex cope better with stress and have lower blood pressure than those who abstain. Regular sex (twice a week) has been linked to an increase of three to eight years in a person's lifespan.

THis could also be connected to the fact that more sex helps us to sleep better, which of course is beneficial to health. Oxytocin, which both the male and female body produces at orgasm, helps with insomnia. It's the reason why so many people (especially men) fall asleep as soon as they have climaxed.

Another major health benefit for men is that a high ejaculation frequency and sexual activity are linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer later in life.

A study found out that men who ejaculated 13 to 20 times monthly presented a 14 per cent lower risk

of prostate cancer than men who ejaculated between four and seven times monthly for most of their adult life. THose ejaculating over 21 times a month presented a 33 per cent decreased risk of developing prostate cancer. Sex cleanses the prostate of toxins that could trigger cancerous changes.

Can sex really protect you from colds and flu too?

Yes. It raises the level of immunoglobulins (IgA) in the body, increasing protection against colds and flu. Not only this, if you are looking at increasing the quality of sperm then you need to have more sex! Tests show that sperm quality lowers through abstinence, particularly after ten days.

Perhaps one of the most significant benefits of all is this - the more active your sex life, the more attractive you become to others. High sexual activity makes the body release more pheromones, chemicals that attract other people to you and make you more desirable. THe more desirable you feel, the more you

will be in the mood for sex and the healthier and happier you may be!

SAMEDI dernier Hollie (pictured right with yours truly), the new lead singer of the local band Miles High entertained an enthusiastic throng at the Chichester Inn with a medley of crowd pleasers old and new.

Quant au vin, M&S's range of wines in the £7-£13 price bracket is the subject of my column this week And I begin with a South African 2017 Journey's End Honeycomb Chardonnay from the cool coastal climate of Stellenbosch, an area I associate with quality vinification!

For an outlay of just £8 you can avail yourself of this lightly-oaked (in French barrels for six months) Chardonnay with aromas of toasted almonds and

a honeyed texture leading to apple flavours with a modicum of lemon culminating in a subtle oak taste on the finish.

THis dry and refreshing wine would suitably embellish any chicken dishes!

My next selection was that of a 2016 Saint-Véran from the Burgundy region of France and, at the price of £11.50, is at the affordable end of the Burgundy range.

Soft, nicely balanced with hints of vanilla and raisins, this wine is decidedly creamy and delicate with white peach and melon flavours and would be an ideal accompaniment to fish dishes.

My final white wine was a £12 2016 Californian Hames Creek Monterey County Chardonnay and proved to be a traditional, flavoursome example of the variety being bold and buttery with toasty oak, vanilla to the fore and complemented by sweet spices and green apple - a blockbuster of a Chardonnay!

Incidentally, the Crémant De Bourgogne Brut is currently on offer at £9.60 and guarantees to add a touch of classy sparkle to your day !

In terms of reds and, at an offer price of a mere £7, I spotted the 2016 Campo Aldea Rioja which was eminently quaffable, but not particularly noteworthy.

Taste-wise black cherry, plum and vanilla added to leathery notes make this a good accompaniment to lamb dishes and is a wine which is better when aired.

For £13 expended, the 2015 Les Voiles De Paulilles Collioure from a

small coastal picture postcard town south of Perpignan, is a Rousillon wine characterised by ripe red fruits and complex spice notes and regales the palate with its panoply of flavour - one to try for sure!

Finally, for a reduced price of £13, the 2016 Sussex Vale Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon caught my attention in terms of the ostensible Sussex connection. Eh bien, this is

Western Australian and a truly fine expression of Cabernet from this region and one that can compete with left bank Bordeaux.

Beautifully rounded, smooth and oozing black berry fruit and cherries, this wine floats my boat, so to speak, and would pair readily with steak pie, lasagne or a seasonal Sunday roast and is one I wholeheartedly commend to you! Imbibe and enjoy!

Community News & Views KNITTERS in the Bognor Regis area have been urged to pick up their needles again.

Denise Kinrade is calling on them to continue to back her campaign to supply twiddle muffs to people with dementia.

She delivered 103 of the woollen items last week to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester. But she has called for help to be able to keep the supplies going.

Denise, of South Bersted, pictured below, said: "THere are a huge number of people living with dementia and around 700 muffs were completed and passed to local hospitals, hospices and nursing homes in 2017. We desperately need more help from local folk able to knit to keep the supply going.

"Anyone who can knit can help. Nothing fancy is needed - just plan and simple knitting is the basis of the twiddle muff."

A twiddle muff is a double thickness hand muff with bits and bobs attached inside and out. It provides a stimulation activity for restless hands mainly for people living with dementia. It is formed from a simple knitted wool scarf some 30cm x 60cm.

Denise became involved in supplying muffs last spring.

Bognor Regis South Girl Guides, Leaders and senior section set themselves a challenge to produce 100 dementia muffs for people in the area.

THey were quickly joined by the area's Trefoil Guild members.

THe public also joined in. Town centre shop Unique Workwear agreed to be a collection point.

Denise said she hoped Bognor Regis area residents would rise to the challenge again in 2018. "Bognor knitters you did so well last year and we would like to be able to continue to give these muffs to those needing them this year," she added.

Completed knitting can again be taken to Unique Workwear, 48 London Road, Bognor Regis. It will be collected and turned into muffs by Denise and her helpers.

Sir, THE BUNGALOW in which we live backs on to Chalcraft Lane, and often at night our property is bathed in an eerie glow of orange light caused by the orange lights of the vast complex of glasshouses to our west shining on low cloud. THis is a regular occurrence which happens throughout the year in bad weather.

While this does not disturb us too much, I am reminded of a similar situation in Burgess Hill (from where we moved eight years ago) where the local football club had new houses built right up to the perimeter of their sports complex. In the football season, they used their floodlights both for weekday evening matches and player training. It was not long before residents started to complain that their young children were 'frightened' by the glow given off by the lights and parents had great trouble in getting some of them to sleep at nights when the floodlights were on.

An environmental injunction was issued to the club, limiting the number of nights they were allowed to switch on their floodlights, and for how long. Unfortunately, on one evening cup match they had to play an extra 30 minutes followed by a series of penalties until the match was resolved. Residents complained that the lights were on well past the allocated time, with the result that the club received a hefty fine.

In the current house selling market, we are required by law to advise in writing what we are to leave behind in the property, and to advise of ANY matter which may adversely affect the sale – including any environmental issues!

THose selling their properties near Burgess Hill FC have seen an effect on house prices, as well as lengthening the sale process – something the new house buyers in the proposed 2,500 homes project being proposed for the west of Chalcraft Lane should be made aware of – as it may affect their children, or selling on their properties at a later stage.

A MEMBER of the unique West Sussex carers health team has won an award.

Mike Dixon, pictured above left, scooped the carers award at the Sussex Armed Forces Network Military Awards.

THe carers health team is a community service provided

by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust which supports informal carers to maintain their own health and wellbeing while they care for others.

Mike received his award from Peter Field, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex.

He said: "I was surprised and delighted to receive an award for the work I do within the carers health team.

"THis service is the first of its kind in the country, providing NHS support for carers, enabling the cared-for to remain at home.

RESIDENTS in the Post area could save hundreds of pounds a year with a councilbacked energy service.

THey are able to buy their gas and electricity through the Your Energy Sussex notfor-profit partnership led by West Sussex County Council.

THe aim is to encourage more people to switch and reduce their energy bills by up to £300 annually on average.

THe awards were held at the Amex Stadium in Brighton as part of a Sussex Armed Forces Network event.

"He has ensured that his colleagues in the carers health team are fully understanding of the support available from the network as well as promoting this support through his everyday role."

Mike carries out home visits and supports carers in libraries and GP surgeries.

A CHICHESTER cancer patient is walking to thank a hospital for looking after him and his mother.

Cameron McLagan is taking part in THe Royal Marsden Cancer Charity's Marsden March this year.

THe 20-year-old was diagnosed with testicular cancer just days after he started his second year at the University of Chichester last September.

He is being treated at THe Royal Marsden's Oak Centre for Children and Young People.

Epsom resident Cameron, pictured below with his dad, said: "I was finding really difficult to walk and could not stay awake.

On reflection, I was possibly experiencing symptoms for a while over the summer before my diagnosis but did not think it was anything serious.

"I went to my local hospital and was diagnosed with testicular cancer and it had spread to my lungs. My right lung had collapsed, which would explain why I was struggling to walk. I was referred to THe Royal Marsden and started chemotherapy treatment."

His mum was treated for breast cancer at the London hospital and passed away when Cameron was 12.

"She was diagnosed when I was one and I think I was sheltered a lot from her treatment. For my dad, it was obviously very tough as he came to the hospital a lot with mum and then had to face coming back with me."

Cameron and his dad, Martin McLagan, have 15 family and friends joining them for the walk on March 4.

"It's about giving something back," said Cameron. "Even though I was already affected by cancer, I never though I'd get it.

It just goes to show how it can affect anyone."

He praised the facilities at the Oak Centre for being homely and a boost when he is receiving his treatment.

Martin said: "It was surreal when Cameron got his diagnosis.

Coming back to THe Royal Marsden was difficult for me as I had spent so much time there with my wife during her treatment. It had been 19 years since her original diagnosis.

"I am a firm believer in playing life with the cards you are dealt so we have both been very positive. I am so proud of Cameron.

"It will be really emotional for us on the day of THe Marsden March but something we both want to do."

Sir, I'M NOT surprised that some recycling bins contain inappropriate items.

Many of us are confused as to which items can be recycled and whether an item is acceptable.

Keen to be green, I sometimes have to ring up and ask questions like: Q: Can I put toothpaste tubes in the recycling?

A: Yes, so long as you clean all the paste out of the tube.

Which kinds of bottle tops are allowed? What about plastic wine corks? Lids of plastic pots? All of them or just some? THose horrible plastic 'string' bags they put citrus in? etc Has Chichester District Council done anything to persuade retailers to reduce plastic packaging? If not, it should.

THere are so many plastic or plastic-coated items, e.g. tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, garden twine, which soon fragment all over the place, ensuring every inch of soil will be peppered with plastic. Horrible.

What about all the toxic waste caused by builders and painters/decorators; contaminated water chucked down the sink, roller trays, brushes and rollers used once and casually thrown into the skip?

And as for the amount of trash scattered along rural roads...

Wilmott family had drive to succeed in town Company was involved in the growth of motoring around the area AS WE look around our town today we see a distinct lack of family businesses, which were prevalent during the last century, therefore I thought I would take a look at just one. How many people can remember Wilmott’s Garages that were around the town in a variety of locations?

Norman James Wilmott was interested in the new motor cars that were being produced in Coventry where he had been an engineering apprentice. Norman’s interest in cars was established when he was involved in the production of the first Rover cars.

He eventually left and searched along the south coast for a suitable site to set up a business. He arrived in Bognor in 1902 where he was to ultimately start two garages in the town.

His first premises were in Waterloo Square, where he launched THe Pier Motor Cycle Works.

At this time, he was to derive his income principally from the hire and repair of cycles, trailers and bath chairs. THe trailers were a type of wicker chair on wheels, which were attached to a cycle by a long iron bar.

Norman was also involved with the developing and marketing of the 'mechanically propelled vehicles' to which they were sometimes referred and was to possibly have the earliest Rover car dealership on the south coast of England in 1904. Norman claimed that he taught one of the

first women to drive a car, but unfortunately her name is unknown.

Motoring at this time was very different to the way it is today. Memories from one of the Wilmott family recalls how people at that time drove without driving lessons, or maybe just a couple to set them on their way.

Driving tests had not been introduced so most people did not have a licence, as we know it today. Cars were frequently breaking down or running out of petrol and I suspect out in the countryside.

Telephones would have been few and far between so if this occurred it would entail a walk or a knock on the door of a house to ask if you could use their phone.

THe driver would then have to wait by the car until assistance arrived sometimes, we suspect having to wait for several hours. Petrol was very often kept in the car in a small can.

We have to remember that people did not usually have garages with their house in the 1920s but equally they would not dream of leaving their cars out at night. THerefore, many cars would be taken to garages similar to Wilmott's to be garaged overnight.

All the cars would be gently pushed into lines, very close together, to make maximum use of the space available.

in a variety of tasks associated with royalty, the first being in 1910 when a letter was sent on June 28 from Buckingham Palace to Norman requesting, 'Kindly let me have by return the bill for the 910 x 90 cover tube supplied to THompson'. THompson was a royal driver.

Business continued to increase and before 1914 Norman was to negotiate and eventually buy an area of fields that bordered on to the Aldwick Road at a cost of £2,730. THe local builders named FW Hill were to become involved when the new premises were constructed on this site. One of the costs to be incurred was for the roof, which amounted to £167.10s. (£167.50) and was constructed with girders and materials from an aircraft hanger.

When the family eventually moved to Stocker Road, they had their sons pile their furniture on top of a bath chair and push it to their new home.

Unfortunately, the First World War was to create a delay in the building of the new garage. People still continued to believe he was mad as their new site was completely in the countryside!

Eventually, the garage premises were built in 1921 and named THe West End Garage. For a time, Norman continued with both garages but eventually in 1924 he sold the Pier Garage, as it had become known, to Sait and Gale who continued to run the business.

A receipt issued in August, 1930, to a woman in Victoria Drive, advises that her 10 h.p. Swift Foursome coupe was to cost £276.15s. (£276.75) and this was to include aluminium numbers plates at 12s 6d (65.5p) and a licence for the remainder of the year costing £4 7s 6d (£4.375) at this time the receipt also mentioned that

‘customers' cars stored and driven entirely at owners risk'. At this time, Wilmott’s were able to garage 120 cars.

Norman died in 1929 and his son, Bernard, took over the business. Seven years later saw Bernard pursue one of his interests - the Monte Carlo International Car Rally, when he competed in the event in the light car section with a Rover 12, open four-seater vehicle. THe rally started from Stavanger in Norway. He was accompanied by Mr K. Croxford of Bognor Regis and Mr H.B. Browning of London.

THey finished fifth and were awarded the Riviera plaque in addition to the cash prize of 1,000 francs. For a number of years, the Wilmott family held the registrations of BP01 and BP02 denoting their vehicles were registered from Sussex.

Although Bernard was away from the town between 1939 and 1944 while in the Army, the garage remained opened and continued to flourish. On his return from the war, Bernard again took control of the garage. After the Second World War, the business changed from principally maintaining cars to selling more new vehicles. He was a supporter and a founder member of Bognor Regis Motor Club where he helped to establish the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Bernard died in 1973 but his widow, Betty, carried on the business. However, in February, 1976, Mrs Wilmott advised her customers the company had amalgamated with the Dove Group of Companies. THe group took advantage in 1977 of the vacation of the Pennicotts premises next door to become one of the most modern garages in the area. THese premises today are the home of the Kia showroom.

Purple and Greens face Fareham as PostSport they keep up race for second place BOGNOR RFC remain in the hunt for a top two spot as they march into the business end of the season.

THe Purple and Greens have been extremely competitive all season and head into the last two months of the season sitting second in Hampshire One. THeir hold on that position was cemented last weekend with a convincing 76-0 over Ellingham & Ringwood. But, with third-place Millbrook just three points behind them with a game in hand, Bognor can afford no slip-ups when they travel along the coast to Fareham Heathens tomorrow (2pm).

After being called off the previous week, the Bognor boys were hungry to return to action against Ellingham.

With a home crowd egging them on at Hampshire Avenue, they started off extremely well with three quick-fire tries.

Chris Webb and Joshua Burgess dominated in the loose after a quick ball allowing veteran George Castleton to cross.

THat was followed by prop Chris Webb pouncing on a scrappy ball and centre Sam Newcombe scything through the E&R defence.

Despite the visitors working hard at the break down, Bognor were in no mood to let up. Winger Danny Greenslade stepped two defenders to score his first senior try.

Further tries from Paddy Burnett, Jonny Lang, Chris Webb and George Castleton made it 50-0 at the break. In the second period, Bognor's scoring slowed off a little.

Good lineout play followed by a solid drive fed Burnett to cross for his second.

Full-back Pat Gibbs then got in on the action before fly-half Dave Sweeney rounded off the scoring after selling a dummy and strolling through a big gap in the centre of the pitch. * Chichester RFC return to action tomorrow eager to keep hold of fourth place in the London Division One South. THe Blues have had a tough start to 2018, losing four of the five matches since the turn of the year.

With that slump in part because of a raft of injuries, coach Scott Ashley is hoping the time off will have allowed his side to regroup and get his experienced players back to full fitness.

Tomorrow they welcome fifth-place Chobham to Oaklands Park (2pm) looking to return to winning ways and seal their hold on fourth place.

CHICHESTER'S cross-country runners showed they can compete with the best as the club put in an excellent performance in the Southern Championships.

A record-breaking 58 athletes donned the green and white vest in the regional event at Brighton's Stanmer Park. Nearly 2,500 runners took part - but Chi emerged with a host of great individual and team performances.

THe senior men's race saw more than 800 people charge around the nine-mile course.

Chi were able to field their best-ever team in numbers, with 18 lining up for the start.

University student Harry Leleu attacked from the off and was rewarded with a fine 61st place, one of the first times Chi have achieved a top 100 finish. James Baker (101st), Will Boutwood (209th), Charles Rodmell (285th) and Tom Pritchard (295th) helped the club to 24th overall.

Missing several of their top runners, Chichester’s senior women stuck to their task

and were rewarded with a 35th place in the team rankings. Ex-university student Emma Hughes led the seven Chichester runners home in a good 150th place.

In the under-17 men's race, Will Broom led the Chichester charge, coming home in 29th.

With Leo Stallard (37th), Ned Potter and Ben Collins (72nd), Chi finished in 5th to equal the highest team finish previously set by the club's U17 women a few years ago.

THe U17 women’s quartet saw Imogen Matthews leading the team home in 27th followed by Alice Cox-Rusbridge in 49th, Florence Smith 88th and Beth Brown 99th to register an eighth team place.

In the U13s, Eva Buckler was Chi’s first runner home (58th) while in the boys, Joe McLarnon and Fionn O’Murchu, registered the same time of 11:08 in 52nd and 53rd respectively.

For the U15s, Sussex county champion Liam Dunne continued his fine form of the winter with a magnificent fifth place.

Chi's promotion push is under pressure as rivals come to town

Chi Ladies are up for the cup CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Matt Wright believes his side can use home advantage to spring a FA Cup shock over Super League giants Liverpool.

THe Reds, who are one of the strongest teams in the English women's game, will make the trip to Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm) in the fifth round of the knockout competition.

Hundreds of people are expected to flock to the ground to cheer on Chi as they try to spring a giant-killing against a team who are two divisions above them.

Manager Wright believes the intimate surroundings could be key as his part-timers against the professional outfit from Merseyside.

Wright said: "THey won’t be used to coming to play at Oaklands Park, so we’re hoping that will give us a little edge over them. It will be a great day for the girls.

"Liverpool are going to be clear favourites, but we’re not going into the game to roll over. THe players will certainly be keen. THey will be up for it.”

Chi, who are currently sixth in the FA Women's Premier League South side, have never reached this stage of the

competition before.

THey sealed their spot in the last 16 after win on penalties over THe New Saints a fortnight ago. THe Reds, meanwhile, are fourth in the top tier and feature former England captain Casey Stoney in their ranks.

Striker Cherelle Khassal, who scored the equaliser in the last round, said: "It's a huge, huge game and we're all looking forward to it, but it's also for the community and getting everyone together for a good family day out."

THe occasion has inspired many around the city to get involved in following the FA Women's Premier League South side.

Good luck messages have been spotted in offices while squad members ventured into the city with the FA Cup to drum up interest in the game Tickets, which went on sale a week ago online and from Chichester College, are still available priced £5 adults, £4 concessions and £2 children.

Chi were given a boost on the pitch too with the dual signings of Chloe Melton and Natasha Stephens from Southampton Saints and Portsmouth respectively.

CHICHESTER City's promotion push will be given a stern test as they welcome fellow title challengers Saltdean United to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

After their FA Vase heroics which saw Miles Rutherford's side cruelly defeated in the last 16 of the national knockout competition at 1874 Northwich, Chi's focus is now firmly on the SCFL Premier race.

With ten weeks of the season to go, seven teams remain in the running for the title - and two of them will meet at Oaklands tomorrow.

Chi, who sit fourth in the division, have won their past four in the league, including their match last weekend at home to East Preston.

Jimmy Wild and Scott Jones both scored a brace apiece to put Chi into a convincing 4-1 lead. But EP pulled themselves back into the match in the last quarter, scoring twice and pushing hard to the final whistle.

Chi also finished the game with ten men when Luke Killner was deemed to have handled on the line blocking a fierce George Laughlin header from a corner with a minute of normal time to go.

Lions hungry for more goals Ne

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes the Lions' scoring form will continue as the Nyetimber Lane side hunt for silverware.

Under the guidance of joint managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds, their young side remain fighting on three fronts.

THe past two months have been a real purple patch as Pagham have won seven out of eight in all competitions, scoring 32 goals in the process.

THat form continued last weekend when the Lions smashed seven past a sorry Worthing United with Dan Simmonds (4), Callum

Overton, Lloyd Rowlatt and Jack Parkinson getting the goals.

THe rout lifted the Lions to sixth in the congested SCFL Premier, still well in contention for a top two spot.

With a trip to fifth-place THree Bridges to come on Tuesday (7.45pm), Pagham know a victory will not only keep them in touch at the top, but damage the promotion credentials of one of their rivals.

Key to the scoring form of recent weeks has been striker Simmonds. Despite only rejoining the club from Shoreham in October,

the number nine has bagged 23 in the league.

THis includes 16 goals in his past eight matches in all competitions - which includes three hat-tricks.

Pagham chairman Tony Shea said: "THere's no doubt that Dan has made a big difference since he came but I do not worry that we are relying on him.

"We have also got Callum, who will score 20 goals. We have plenty of goals from midfield too as Lloyd and Terrell Lewis has proved."

As well as remaining in the title hunt, Pagham also have a final in the RUR Cup against Chichester to look forward to in the spring.

Before then, the Lions have a Sussex Senior Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s on March 13 at Culver Road.

Win that and THe Lions will have a day out at THe Amex to look forward to.

Shea said much of the praise must go to his coaching team for bringing on such a young squad.

He said: "Richie was assistant last year and when Mark Bennett said he was going to step down for personal reasons, Richie said he fancied it. But we also had the success of the youth teams to think about.

"THey took a while to get going but, between them and coach Will Searle, they have found something which is working. I can't praise all the backroom team enough. Everyone at the club is pulling together, I couldn't be happier."

Victories for Blues, Sids and Robins SELSEY struck late to bounce back to winning ways as two injury-time goals sealed a surprise win over high-flying Mile Oak. THe Blues, who have won just once since the turn of the year, looked doomed when the visitors took a 2-0 lead with just ten minutes to go.

But Steve Bailey's young guns hit back - first through Jake Goulding before James Kilhams and Jamie Williams both scored in injury time to seal a famous win.

THe three points keeps Selsey eighth in SCFL Division One. But with games in hand on those around them, there is still a chance of a late push up the table to seal a top-six spot.

Next up for Bailey's Blues is a trip to

Southwick tomorrow (3pm) before a midweek trek to Haywards Heath to face St Francis Rangers on Tuesday (7.30pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham and Bosham both cruised into the third round of the League Cup with convincing wins.

THe Sids completed a routine win over Upper Beeding thanks to goals in each half from Callum Dowdell and Harry Gregory.

Next up for Daren Pearce's side is a home match against Rottingdean Village in a week's time (3pm) as the third place side look to keep up the pressure on those above them.

Bosham's Callum Coker scored twice in the Robins' 5-1 win at Montpelier Villa.

THey face Westfield tomorrow at Walton Lane (2pm).

Bognor nine points adrift but boss vows to keep on fighting Next Game

BRAINTREE TOWN (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says his side will keep on fighting despite losing ground in the battle for survival.

It was a big week for everyone at Nyewood Lane as the Rocks were pitched with two winnable matches in four days.

But a 1-0 defeat on the road at fourthbottom Chippenham Town followed by a postponement on Tuesday night against Welling means that Bognor have lost ground in the fight for survival.

THe gap between the second bottom Rocks and safety is now nine points, the most it has been all season.

With only one win in 12 in all competitions, tomorrow's match with Braintree Town at Nyewood Lane (3pm) is crucial - and Rocks boss Pearce says his side will keep up the optimism as they seek their first league win at home since August.

He said: "I would find it easier to take if we were being dominated, but we are five to ten per cent short. We just have to keep trying and working hard and the results will come.

"Everyone will have an opinion at what's wrong, they are all entitled to do that. But I cannot ask the players for any more.

"Some people will think it is the manager's fault and that may be so; but I will tell anyone that, whoever we have in charge, they will not be able to attract the players that we need.

Two seasons ago there was a team just up the

road from us (Havant & Waterlooville) with two and a half times our wage budget. THey got relegated, that's how difficult the league is."

Bognor's poor run was extended last weekend when they were beaten 1-0 at relegation rivals Chippenham. THe Rocks thought they had taken an early lead but Doug Tuck's strike was ruled out for an earlier foul.

Ben Swallow and Ibra Sekajja also had chances. But Bognor's task was made all the harder when Calvin Davies was dismissed just five minutes before half time.

THe Bluebirds took the lead after the break and, try as they might, Bognor were unable to find the equaliser.

Davies' dismissal means he misses the next four matches. Corey Heath is also still out, as is James Crane, who went in to have his operation on his shoulder this week, which was part-funded by the Rocks Supporters Club. But Sami El-Abd and Ollie Pearce are in contention to start after both were on the bench last time out.

Braintree come to the Nye Camp with their own troubles. THe ninth-placed Irons have not won in five matches in the league, a run that has seen them slip out of the play-off places.

But looking at all competitions, they have won just once in 11 matches - something that is close to matching even the Rocks at the top of the poor form table.

Suspensions hitting Rocks hard LIFE at the bottom is hard enough with a full team of 11. It gets harder still when you're one man down.

But that's exactly the position Bognor have found themselves in for nearly half the playing minutes of 2018 so far.

Since the turn of the year, the Rocks have had four people sent off in just seven matches: Ben Swallow against Havant, Richard Gilot at home to Leyton Orient, Stefan Ljubicic versus Truro and now Calvin Davies at Chippenham.

THe Rocks lost all four of those games.

But the impact of suspensions goes beyond that, as each red card usually brings a suspension of three games.

For a team like Bognor with a small squad, this means that resources get stretched putting more pressure on those with injuries, which can ultimately lead to more injuries.

THe latest red for right-back Calvin Davies leaves manager Jack Pearce in a slight selection pickle.

As it is the former Pompey player's second dismissal of the year, he misses the next four matches - meaning Pearce must work out how to fill the full-back role which is essential in the way the Rocks have attacked, especially since Davies joined the club last year.

NO DOUBT it has been a very difficult month for fans and players of the Rocks.

THe games are coming thick and fast and, despite a postponement this Tuesday in the home game at Welling United, the pressure is well and truly placed on those players and staff at the club to try and avoid the drop this season.

Without a win at home since August 15 in the league is a worrying fact. THe fans can clearly see the players are trying their best, but at times, we are getting punished at crucial moments.

I have to note that the performances of officials haven't helped Bognor's matches in recent times. THat isn't an excuse, of course, but at times they really do make a difference.

After the draw away to Hungerford Town, Rocks welcomed Truro City to Nyewood Lane.

I have to say that Truro were very lucky to be awarded that first goal after the clear foul on Dan Lincoln in the buildup.

THe game was held up for over 30 minutes as the medical staff and eventually an ambulance appeared to attend to a possible spinal problem.

THe evidence was true enough - two massive stud marks on Dan's back proved that the goal should never have been given.

And then Truro went and

scored again later on with Gary Charman, pictured below, in goal, but before then I thought he did really well and pulled out some fabulous saves.

For me, the Chippenham Town home game was another example of how poor we have been playing lately.

Not having a real go at goal in the second half was a disappointment.

But we were up against a game Chippenham Town side and, unfortunately, the sending off of Calvin Davies didn't help us.

It was a shame, as I thought Calvin was the best player on the pitch up until then.

It was a very sombre mood, predictably, after that performance on the way back on the coach.

In my view, we have really been spoilt with success these past few seasons and this year the standard of the league has just been so high that we are finding it hard to get results.

THere is certainly room for improvement, but Ollie Pearce returning is a real bonus and I hope he can get back into form at the Braintree Town game at Nyewood Lane tomorrow we are overdue a Rocks win at home.

With 13 games to go, there are still plenty of points on the table.
